7 from the Women: Kate McDonnell
Kate McDonnell’s sixth album, TRAPEZE, is a captivating exploration of contemporary American life, weaving together themes of hope, self-discovery, love, and loss with an unmistakable sense of humor and resilience. Following the success of her 2021 album Ballad of a Bad Girl, TRAPEZE marks a bold evolution in her songwriting, offering 14 original tracks written over a prolific three years. The album’s songs strike with raw, cathartic truth, and their melodies become instant earworms, balancing sophisticated production with deeply personal reflections.
In TRAPEZE, Kate delves into universal topics—from confronting life’s purpose and overcoming self-sabotage, to surrendering to love and desire amidst chaotic times. Tracks like "Nowhere to Go" and "You Won’t Blow Away" capture the introspective journey of navigating anger and sadness, while songs like "All On My Own" and "Pretty Good Day" offer poignant moments of resilience, humor, and simple joys. Kate’s commentary on societal issues is felt in songs like "Step Right Up," where she powerfully addresses the impact of gun violence on children’s lives.
Recorded in the winter of 2024 by Jimi Woodul, TRAPEZE features a tight-knit band with Sam Zucchini (drums) and James Gascoyne (bass) rounding out Kate’s musical vision. The album's vibrant production, mixed by Andrew Oedel and mastered by Chris Muth, provides the perfect backdrop for Kate’s dynamic storytelling. Notably, Kate continues her unique approach to guitar playing—using upside-down-and-backwards techniques, adding another layer of individuality to her artistry.
With a career spanning decades, Kate’s journey has seen her open for musical legends, play at iconic venues like the Newport Folk Festival and Kennedy Center, and tour extensively across the U.S. and Europe. Now, as TRAPEZE takes flight, Kate is gearing up for another round of performances, bringing her new music to audiences both at home and abroad.
Join us as we chat with Kate, below.
1. What Have You Been Working To Promote Lately?(here you can showcase a track, an EP or a video – give us at least 150 words about it and a link)
I’ve just released my sixth album TRAPEZE. The fourteen original songs are rooted in contemporary American life, where hope, love and desire are never very far from the shadow of violence and loss. As a singer-songwriter, my goal is to combine music and lyrics in a way that makes you catch your breath, see yourself in a new way, understand something new. Of all my albums, this one’s production feels accessible to a wider audience—from Folk to Americana to Adult Contemporary and even Pop. For these new songs I wanted a fresh and sophisticated production, and I think we nailed it, me and my producer Jimi Woodul. Jimi can play almost any instrument, too. He’s the garam masala of the album.
Some of the songs bring up the rough feelings people can’t always express. I want listeners to understand they absolutely are not alone in having these thoughts. Our current isolation on social media and the obsession with a positive “brand” are not what we need as humans. This is no ordinary time.
2. Please tell us about your favorite song written, recorded or produced by another woman and why it’s meaningful to you
It’s nearly impossible to choose one song, but Bonnie Raitt’s Grammy-winning song “Just Like That” had me on the first few chords. Her story is simple and direct, and the twist in the narrative just pushed me off the cliff. You get the sense that she’s sitting on your couch playing it right to you, delivered with ache and experience. Just spectacular writing and spare music so well matched to the lyrics, it’s a perfect song.
3. What does it mean to you to be a woman making music/in the music business today and do you feel a responsibility to other women to create messages and themes in your music?
I’m excited to see the spotlight is shining more on women these days in the music business. Growing up in the 70s, I saw women like Joni Mitchell, Nancy Wilson, Christine McVie, women who were taken seriously as songwriters and instrumentalists, rightfully so. Nowadays, the level of musicianship among women is much higher than it was when I was starting to play.
When you talk about themes and messages, I feel like when I write about my own experience the message naturally rings true with the listener. My album’s title song TRAPEZE explores the voices inside of us that dominate our true voice, that voice deep inside that’s buried alive under layers of ‘shoulds.’ I take the responsibility seriously of telling the truth about my inner life, and that’s what connects these songs to the listener.
4 Additional Questions – Choose any 4
What female artists have inspired you and influenced you?
Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Amalia Rodriguez, Cesária Évora, Jo Stafford, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday…..I could go on!
Who was the first female artist that made you want to create music / be in the business?
Joan Baez. I saw a record in my mother’s record collection with her on the cover, and I thought, “oh she’s so pretty, she must sound pretty”—assumptions heavily engraved by society—so I put the needle down, and that was that. I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. It was a profound and magical time when I discovered her at the age of 4.
What was the most challenging thing you have had to face as a female artist?
Sticking up for myself, feeling like I have to be nice all the time and submitting to others’ wishes have reared their ugly heads. I avoid conflict, and that just can’t be a missing skill for anybody in any business, but especially the music business. A good friend, a man, once told me that I was too nice, and that’s why I wasn’t further ahead in my career. That was a gut punch. And it was true.
If you could collaborate with any other female artists, who would you choose?
If I could reach back in time, I would want to collaborate with Jo Stafford. I love the texture of her voice and razer accuracy of her pitch and vibrato, not to mention her emotional control in her delivery. She’s right up there with many of the other greats, but there is something about her as a person who would make the whole experience easy, fun, inspiring, but also very humbling. She has a terrific sense of humor and confidence—she recorded an album “Cocktails for Two” with her piano-playing husband Paul Weston and sang all of the songs off key, on purpose! I mean, who would do that?! That would be the pitch-perfect Jo Stafford.

Hi! :D I wanted to if you were taking any requests? (or if you have the time, for that matter. Honestly if you’re busy just ignore this!) I wanted to know if you could do a type of: being friends with Tommyinnit would include... thing. Y’know? I just think he’s really cool and I wanted to know what being friends with him would be like. (P.s. have an absolutely amazing day! You’re one of my favorite writers right now! Keep up the great work! <3)
big T is pog ig🙄 jk jk, I love tommy🥺 this is such an old request oml, but thank you! hope you enjoy this<3
Being friends with tommyinnit would include:
if you’re more of a shy person
him being loud and you being quiet would actually work so well
he’d bring out the loud in you
and you’d bring out the quiet in him
he’d get you talking
and would say random shit to make you laugh
and since he’s such an open person
it makes it easier for you to open up as well
you’d get very close to each other faster than you’d thought
and you became an iconic duo - chaotic yet having those peacefully quiet moments
if you were loud like him though
radiating chaotic energy and everything
you’d be the most chaotic friends ever
yelling over each other to prove your points
or just when talking about something you're both very passionate about
in this case you’d also be an iconic duo
but could you imagine him bringing you on stream?
jesus christ, the talking would never end
istg everyone else would be like… there’s two of them…
and would be surprised about how well you two fit
kinda scary…
anyways-
generally speaking, you’d go out to a bunch of places together
and practically just do everything together
you’d be good friends with his family
since they see you all the time
he’d bring you onto his streams
which would basically just consist of the two of you bickering back and forth
or building a bunch of towers💀
bc I swear him and his fucking towers could almost be a duo in itself
he’d be calling you woman, of course
or big man
the chat would love the friendship between you
as well as everyone else on the smp
speaking of them, they’d think the two of you are really cute
but also really fucking annoying
you’re just about the only person he'd go soft for🥺
and he can get pretty clingy if he hasn't seen you for a while
but then call you the clingy one
just like with tubbo lol
you’d also be very good friends with wilbur and tubbo
he thinks you’re pretty pog😎

The best restaurants in Santorini, Greece
This, of course, isn't a definite list. We didn't even try a fraction of what the culinary world of Santorini has to offer and I am sure there are plenty of equally fantastic or better places. But by these 5 restaurants stood out for us and came recommended by other travelers and locals.
Hope you're not hungry!
---
1. Μεταξύ Μας / Metaxi Mas 9FQ5+H2 Exo Gonia, Greece www.santorini-metaximas.gr
Metaxi Mas is a must whether you take a taxi, rent a four-wheeler, or simply walk from the charming village of Pyrgos. (We were advised very strongly against doing the latter by a very nice lady at a souvenir store: "It's not possible to walk, it's in the next village! But it is a wonderful restaurant, you must make it there regardless," she said. We did it anyway and it took about half an hour of walking downhill.) And just like pretty much everyone we spoke to about Metaxi Mas promised, it is absolutely amazing. You won't find your regular horiatiki and moussaka here, but by the time you make it here, you've most likely had enough of those and will be excited to take a quick break. You'll also have a change of view, because the cozy terrace is overlooking the airport and the less photographed side of the island, which may be slightly less iconic but gorgeous nonetheless. We started with Smoked Fish in a Chickpea Stew and the moment we tasted the dish, we knew that it would be the best meal on the island. We continued with Shrimp saganaki finished with ouzo, tomato sauce, fennel and feta cheese, which I will remember for a long time. And then, for a finale, a Spicy fried pork with Assyrtiko Santorini wine (which we were about to learn all about at a nearby winery, Santo Wines) with peppers, onion, garlic, Santorini cherry tomatoes, feta cheese and boukovo—red pepper flakes. Were we full? Of course. Did we want more? Absolutely! It was our last day on Santorini, so we knew we wouldn't have time to return to Metaxi Mas, so we asked our lovely waitress if she could suggest just one more, small dish, simply because everything was so delicious that we'd love another bite. She said that her favorite thing on the menu was Oven-baked asparagus with Cretan graviera cheese and estragon, and we thought that a little asparagus appetizer would be a perfect finishing touch to this feast. Little did we know that the "small dish" is in fact a huge plate filled with lots and lots of hot, melty, delicious cheese (with a little bit of asparagus buried deep under). It was way more than we wanted but way too delicious to leave behind and a taxi to take us to the wine tour at Santo Wines was already waiting. We might have burnt our mouths a little but we finished the asparagus and our wonderful waitress brought us a dessert packed to go because she knew we had to go. If you're in Santorini right now and looking for some delicious food, I couldn't be more jealous of you!
---
2. To Psaraki Vlichada Marina, Vlichada 847 00, Greece www.topsaraki.gr
Near the southernmost tip of Santorini, at the end of Perivolos beach you'll find the charming Vlychada port. Arguably the best place to view it from (and definitely the most delicious one) is To Psaraki taverna. You'll have to drive or take a taxi there but the place is worth the trip. The actual restaurant is very nice but you really want to sit at the bright blue terrace across the street, which overlooks the port and the sea. Eating at To Psaraki feels like finding a hidden gem andt also like being on a Greek postcard at the same time. The food is delicious and it starts from the very beginning—each table receives a bread basket and a portion of Santorini tomato paste with olive oil and oregano. (There is a tomato paste museum down the road, but it was still closed due to Covid when we visited.) We continued the feast with Fresh Greek mussels steamed with wine and spring onions (it's hard to imagine a more perfect dish to go with the view of sea and a distant smell of a seaport) after which a gorgeous Grilled Octopus arrived. Can't say that we were hungry anymore, but our main dish — fresh and homely amberjack was only about to be served. Accompanied by vegetables, tomatoes and a lemon, it was wonderful.
The restaurant overlooks the port and a short walkaway is Vlychada Beach with black sand, a beach bar and some amazing view of the cliffs, which makes it easy to spend a whole day in this small area.
---
3. Kokkalo 25is Martiou 25, Thira 847 00, Greece kokkalosantorini.com
We arrived in Santorini midday and after the initial shock caused by the overwhelming beauty of the view from the plane, then the taxi and finally from our suite, we were ready to eat. We picked Kokkalo purely because it was the closest recommended restaurant from our suite. It did take some climbing (everything in Santorini involves countless stairs and hills) and then a short walk along a busy, narrow street, but the place was 100% worth it.
We were greeted by a very friendly and quirky lady with a very particular sense of humor and a tray with 2 glasses of strong, local liquor. Day drinking it is! After hearing that we just arrived on the island, she was quick to recommend a local specialty—Santorini tomato fritters. "If you're going to have them, you need to have them here," she said, "we have cooking classes and we teach how to make them here." Tomato fritters are very tasty, but to be completely honest, it is one of those dishes that you try once and don't necessarily need to order again anytime soon.
We also got the Santorini Greek Salad and Chicken Souvlaki, which were both absolutely delicious and anyone could eat them every day for a long time. The presentation of the chicken deserves a special shoutout—it is definitely an attention-grabber when it arrives at the table.
Kokkalo is totally a great spot—it may not overlook the volcano, but staring into the flat side of Santorini with Anafi island in the distance is a pure pleasure! Mix that with great food, chilled wine and lovely service and you have a fantastic experience!
---
4. Roka Mpotsari 6, Oía 847 02, Greece www.roka.gr
I'm not gonna lie, Roka was a bit of an accident (a great one though!) We hiked from Fira to Oia and we completely underestimated the time it would take us to complete the hike considering all the stops for wine, snacks, photos and views. They say that the hike takes from 3 to 6 hours and it did take us 6 hours (we're fast hikers but we stopped A LOT along the way to enjoy the views and wine) so when we finally got to Oia, we needed to eat before the sunset and most places were either booked or still closed because of Covid. We basically ran to check out Roka and it is semi-hidden in a maze of small, charming alleyways so we got a little lost trying to find it. We were greeted by a man who looked like he could be in a movie about a mafia-ran restaurant: white shirt and a tie, a sceptical gaze, a cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth, and a brutal silence. He turned out to be our waiter and luckily he turned out to be very friendly, much contrary to our first impression of him.
We were seated at the small back patio lit by the setting sun and overlooking the sea and some less touristy parts of town and the island. The food was absolutely delicious yet presented in a slightly pretentious but cheesy way. It is not taverna food and obviously the chef is aspiring to a higher level of a dining experience. To start we were served rusk with olives and delicious tomato paste, which we learned was typical of Santorini, famous for its cherry tomatoes. Then we continued with Imam Bayaldi’ with eggplant, shrimps, ’Oyzo’ glaze and chilli garlic mayo and Mushrooms Ragout on a sourdough bruschetta with caramelized onions, cream and gruyere sauce. Those two appetizers were quite Huge And Totally Satisfied Our Post-Hike Hunger, But We Had Two More Dishes Coming - Main Courses This Time.
Skioufikta - Traditional Greek Handmade Pasta with Caramelized Onion, Eggplant, Zucchini, Tomato and ’Xinoturi’ From Ios, which was light, delicate and delicious. The shape of pasta is a bit like cavatelli and is a perfect vessel for the summer flavors of this dish. Fresh Dorado Fillet came with fantastic Parsnip Puree, Braised Leek that melts in your mouth with Hazelnuts and was topped with long, thin crisps that gave it an additional texture. Satisfied and excited, we ran to the nearby Castle of Agios Nikolaos for a spectacular and unforgettable sunset.
---
5. Naoussa Fira Santorini Next to the Central Orthodox Cathedral of Fira Town Mitropoleos Fira Town, Thira 847 00, Greece naoussasantorini.restaurant
When we arrived at this gigantic taverna, it was empty, with the only two guests eating at a table near the windows. We decided to sit at the other table with a view—right next to the couple finishing their dinner. It turned out to be a quite an unfortunate choice because those guests were an extreme example of a married couple who goes out to talk to other people in bars and restaurants. We spent the entire dinner listening about the wealth, success and amazing life of our co-diners, all the houses, apartments, businesses and countless trips all over the world were described in detail whether we wanted it or not. We also learned the history of their relationship including tidbits like: "Would you believe that after not seeing me for 2 weeks my husband chose to take me out to eat sushi instead of taking me to the bedroom straight from the airport?"
But back to the restaurant, the food was delicious and the sunset view (when we managed to look away from our interlocutors) quite terrific. We started with Dolmades, which are vine leaves stuffed with lemony rice and happen to be one of my favorite small dishes. The leaves are the best when they're delicate and not veiny, the rice needs to be moist and the entire thing is best served room temperature or slightly warm. So good! We also had a tuna salad with hard boiled eggs, which looked a bit like mess but was packed with unexpected flavor. We finished with a whole fish, which was absolutely perfect.
We did drink a lot of wine and we took our time eating, listening to the forced stories and admiring the sunset. At some point the initially empty dining room filled up completely and then it emptied again. It felt like we experienced the whole circle of sunset dining crowd.

Fic recs:
Ok so during these past few years I’ve read sooooo many good fics, and I’m going to recommend my favorites !! Most of these are Member/Reader but there are some exceptions!!
Keys:
❦-Fluffyyyyy like marshmellows
☽-Angst, you WILL cry
☠-Smut, for when you’re alone at night
BTS
Jin
Folia by httpjeon ❦ ☠
Synopsis: stressed from work, you’re sent on vacation to the beautiful, tropical planet of Liana where you meet a beautiful Folian man named Seokjin, who makes your vacation 10x better.
This is probably the wridest fic on this list, but I’m not complaining. If you like this one then I also recommend the rest of the made of stardust series.
* * * * * *
Yoongi
5:40 PM by minnpd: ☠
one of my favorite smut pieces.
* * * * * *
Hoseok
Gyve by jiminwereckedme: ☽ ☠
Synopsis: On the occasion of your best friends wedding and high school reunion, you happened to meet once again, one of the richest heirs of the country, famous fuckboy Jung Hoseok. While the world saw him as a cocky arrogant person and you, as a confident, strong woman, only the two of you knew the scars that were hidden, and things you both were unable to fix. Only the two of you could see right through each others facade. But could you and Hoseok finally break the gyves holding you back? Or were you the ones who shackled each other in the first place?
While the world saw him as a cocky arrogant person and you, as a confident, strong woman, only the two of you knew the scars that were hidden, and things you both were unable to fix. Only the two of you could see right through each others facade. But could you and Hoseok finally break the gyves holding you back? Or were you the ones who shackled each other in the first place?
I have never wanted to be rich as much as when I read this fic, it also brought me into a “wedding planning period” lol, if you’re up for that then I recommend this a loooooot.
Tip 143 by minflix ❦ ☠
Synopsis: Even though he is everything you find attractive in a man, your friend and co-worker Jung Hoseok is just exactly that - a friend and co-worker. For some reason, you have never found yourself attracted to him even though all the girls and guys around you go absolutely crazy for him.But that all changes for you one night while scrolling through Heart2Heart, a sex live cam website…
Honestly all of minflix’s fanfictions deserve to be on this list, bu out of them Tip 143 is my personal favorite. I love the portrail of Hoseok (he’s such a cutieeeee). Totally recommend it !
Transference by dark-muse-iris: ☽ ☠
Synopsis: Prolonged periods of work-related stress brings you to a cross-road in life that leaves you prone to make impulsive decisions. During a routine visit to your local bakery, you stumble upon an intriguing business card belonging to a “tantric therapist” and take a risk. When you discover your therapist is an attractive young man with penchant for shibari, you throw a caution to the wind as he helps guide you self-recovery.
Wowowowowowowwwww, this fic is so addicting and the sexual tension has never been higher and I literally can’t recommend this enough.
Starfire by readyplayerhobi ❦ ☽
Synopsis: The schism that broke the galaxy began, as it usually does, over a disagreement. The resultant civil war has raged for hundreds of years. When a ragtag group of travellers discovers something that could turn the tide of war, for good or for worse, the bonds of friendship and love will be tested.
Okay so hear me out; even though this fiction isn’t even near complete the setup is done amazingly and I just KNOW that this series is going to turn out fantastic.
War lords by avveh (Namjoon/reader/Hoseok): ☠
Synopsis: Sometimes, we all need to let a little loose on the control we have in our lives. This fic actually reminds me a little of house of cards. It’s another mafia au with loads of dark smut, just not quite as gross as house of cards. Either way it’s really good and the portrails of Namjoon & Hoseok makes my knees weak.
* * * * * *
Namjoon
Phototbooth by seraphjoon: ☠
Synopsis: You never knew fucking in a photobooth, while all your friends are on the other side, could be this sweet.
Just a lil something for your late night rendevouz

Jimin
The secrets triology by avveh: ☠
Synopsis: Park Jimin is the office’s oddball. Meek and quiet as a mouse, you never assume to omuch of him. Your mistake.
I present to you all; Park Jimin’s duology. This fiction really really really describes what it´s like when he goes from the worlds sweetest mochi to a sex icon in mere seconds. BOOM, is all I want to say.
Slight changes by chiminiemoans: ☽ ☠
THIS FIC WRECKED ME, from the day I read it and onwards I’ve only been a shell. No but seriously though, this fic is a masterpiece, probably one of my all time favorite fictions. It’s so well written and it just gives me all the feels, even thinking about it makes me want to cry. Also, I’ve never wanted to just scream FUCK YOU TAEHYUNG as much as when reading this.
I’ll never be her by anon-luv: ☽
Synopsis: You loved him with all your heart, but he could only give you half of his. Jimin was the love of your life, your night in shining armor when she wasn’t around. She was his ex girlfriend, his first love, actually she was his many firsts and she kept coming back. He had warned you she was his weakness, but you didn’t listen, because to you having him even if it was only partially was better than not having him at all. At least for now.
If you haven’t noticed it already, I’m currently in a love hate relationship with angst. Speaking of love hate relationships, this fic. It’s sooo sad, yet I can’t hate it.
A lack of color by minflix ❦ ☽☠
Synopsos: Slowly but surely, you were starting to warm up to the idea of forever seeing in black and white as long as Jimin was by your side.
This is another minflix fic that I love, can’t recommend it enough if you’re a fan of angst (like me).
Baby, baby by hobiwonder ❦ ☽☠
Synopsis: When you’ve run out of savings to continue on to the last semester of your Bachelors - you take an unorthodox route. Helping a desperate couple have a child and getting paid for it? Heck yeah. But what do you know - it wasn’t as easy as it sounds.
Another hobiwonder fic, but is anybody even slightly surprised. This one is my personal favorite of hers/his though, the writing style is 10/10 and the plot is AMAZING. Also, the sexual tension, I’VE NEVER FELT ANYTHING QUITE LIKE IT
Covet by bang-tan-bitches: ☠
Synopsis: Agreeing to meet Lee Ji-Hye’s boyfriend Park Jimin was your first mistake
This is INTENSE
* * * * * *
Taehyung
You were happy by evangelene: ☽
Synopsis: You were in love with your best friend, and he only cared about his girlfriend. On the upside, you have two boys willing to do anything for you–including searching to the end of the earth when you go missing.
If there’s one author out there that never fails to make me cry it’s evangelene. This fiction is a whole rollercoaster ride, and I honestly doubt I’ve ever cried as much as when reading this. THIS WILL MAKE YOU CRY
Hush by sugakookiemonster (Taehyung/Reader/Jungkook): ☠
Synopsis: Four seats, five bodies. “Careful, sweetheart,” he breathed into the shell of your ear, hand tightening over your waist in warning. You lick your lips, pausing just long enough to ponder; what if you don’t want to be careful?
This duo, this duo was made to kill us all I promise. And in this fic, woahhhh like I’ve never been this attracted to book characters before.
D!ck on the go by jeonggukingdom: ☠
Synopsis: It was all shits and giggles when you and Taehyung were desperate seniors in High School, having no idea what to do with your lives, wondering if you’d ever find a decent job or even graduate in the first place. It is not so funny anymore when you come home from the big city to enjoy your vacation time and you find his sex-shop right in front of the house you grew up in when you were a kid. “If nothing works out I’m just gonna open a sex shop and call it something obnoxious like ‘Dick on the Go’ or something with a stupid zucchini logo flashing on top of the building.” He had said one time. Shit, you had no idea he actually meant it.
This is plain crack, like I have NO clue what’s happening, but I can’t deny enjoying it...A lot...
Slight changes by chiminiemoans: ☽ ☠
THIS FIC WRECKED ME, from the day I read it and onwards I’ve only been a shell. No but seriously though, this fic is a masterpiece, probably one of my all time favorite fictions. Insomnia by hobiwonder ❦ ☠
Synopsis: You can’t sleep.
I seriously love all of hobiwonder’s fictions, and this one is no exception.
Baby, baby by hobiwonder ❦ ☽ ☠

1-21 minus the once u already got, BITCH!
OH MY GOD KJDFBDHFDF ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. LOVE YOU AND PUTTING THIS UNDER A READ MORE!
1. What’s the most depressing movie you’ve ever watched?Definitely My Life As A Zucchini. It’s a really sweet claymation movie about children and found family that, while it still has a happy ending, made me cry so hard and still makes me cry whenever I rewatch it. It lost the Best Animated Feature Oscar to Zootopia in 2016, and it’s a robbery that has me reeling to this day. (It’s on Netflix right now, go watch it everyone!)
2. What’s the most disturbing movie you’ve ever watched?Ahh I haven’t seen a lot of horror movies so I guess Hereditary? It’s the most visually disturbing I’ve seen, at least. Rosemary’s Baby would probably take most psychologically disturbing.
3. An actor/actress you’ve seen in more than 8 movies? Name the movies. If I’m cheating; Emma Watson - Harry Potter films + Beauty and the BeastIf I’m not cheating; Jim Carrey - the Truman Show, the Mask, Dumb and Dumber, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Batman Forever, Liar Liar, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Man On The Moon, Ace Venture: When Nature Calls, The Cable Guy, etc. etc. I know this comes off like I’m a really big Jim Carrey stan, but I’m not, it’s my Dad…so I’ve seen a lot of his stuff lol.
4. A film you could watch on repeat for the rest of your life?Moulin Rouge! I liked this movie so much when I saw it that I watched it again the next day and again a week later. It’s a lot of fun, has a lot of hidden meaning, and is overall just a very good movie with a bangin’ sound track, and I will defend it until I die.
5. What’s the very first film you remember watching? The Rescuers. From Disney’s Animation Bronze Age, it certainly fits right in with Disney’s trend of darker and more implicitly grounded stories, and it holds a lot of nostalgia for me. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I used to watch it all the time as a kid. It was probably my second favorite movie, behind Robin Hood.
8. Which book would you like to see adapted into a film? This is a hard one because most of the books I want adapted have already been adapted! I suppose, and this is cheating, The Handmaid’s Tale. I want a movie with a female director and a female writer and Margaret Atwood as a consultant!
9. The most aesthetically pleasing movie you’ve ever watched? The Grand Budapest Hotel, easily.
10. What’s your favourite movie director?François Truffaut! I know that sounds pretentious but he’s genuinely one of my biggest inspirations, it’s really clear from his interviews that he understands film very deeply and I admire how he lived through the transition from black and white to color films. He was a great writer and a great director and it is truly a loss that he has passed.
11. Your favourite movie genre?I’m more partial to film movements than genres, but I do love a good drama.
12. A movie that holds a special place in your heart?Just, any Winnie the Pooh movie. I had a very personal connection to the books as a kid - I had a whole ass collection of ALL of A. A. Milne’s works for children that I must have read dozens of times, and I would always cry when I finished it, and the movies were no different. True story, when I went to go see the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows in theaters, I almost debated skipping it to see the new Winnie the Pooh movie instead. I didn’t end up skipping Harry Potter, but I rented the Winnie the Pooh movie when it got released on Redbox, and I did still cry a ridiculous amount at the finish. Alllll through the credits.
13. Your favourite comedy film?Burn After Reading! I have no idea why people don’t like this movie, it is absolutely hilarious! Fun fact, the Coen brothers wrote this while they were writing No Country For Old Men to destress, which is about the most iconic thing I’ve ever heard.
14. A music video you would love to see developed into a film?Cheating but, hey, Gorillaz film! Please! Please oh my god I would go and see a Gorillaz movie SO hard!
15. A film everyone loves but you hate?Pacific Rim. I’m…still writing my Letterboxd review for this movie because I wanna make sure I don’t get anything wrong but I still want to express the level at which I didn’t really enjoy it. I think the plot got hyped up for me wayyy too much, because I felt that it was a competent mech/monster battle movie, but not so much a compelling action/adventure drama movie. Ehh. It looked very good, at least.
16. A film you love but everyone else hates?EVERYONE KNOWS THIS…..Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was a good movie and even if I won’t defend the DCEU on other stuff anymore I will always defend BvS on the grounds of it being a good fucking movie that got absolutely crucified for no damn reason.
17. Which cinematic universe would you like to live in?Harry Potter Cinematic Universe, baby! They made it into movies so it counts, I’m a wizard ‘Arry!
18. What’s your favourite biopic?Amadeus. I know it’s more fictionalized than some other biopics, but it’s really a stunning movie in every possible way. It’s honestly an incredible watch, especially for me, someone who is bad at and thus has an aversion towards History and heavily historically based movies lmao.
19. Mainstream movies or indie movies?Indie movies any day of the week. Mainstream movies always let me down and usually have a scandal involved. Indie movies let me down a lot less and usually look nicer and have better writing. The trade-off of less big names for higher quality is worth it.
20. Old movies or contemporary movies? This is really hard! I’m gonna say contemporary movies because more of my favorite films are more recent, UNLESS it’s something from the French New Wave in which case old movies win out.
21. A film with an amazing soundtrack?Juno or Lady Bird are both amazing movies in their own right, and they both have a fabulous sound track. Lady Bird’s sountrack is a little more varied than Juno’s, but it’s all good stuff.

Sail Away
One week on a 50 ft yacht, eight friends, one beer loving skipper, the salty Aegean Sea, the sweet tunes of Enya and endless sunshine. It was hard not too relax!
We spent our first night in Oia, Santorini watching the iconic sunset and enjoying our first Greek salad of the week. What a life we live! The following day we started with breakfast served on the rooftop of our cute little villa overlooking the sea. With our tummies happily fed we set off to explore the blue and white streets of Oia before the crowds hit. We took the hundreds of steps down to Ammoudi Bay, passing a procession of donkeys flicking flies away and looking thirsty in the hot sun. To cool off we found a rocky swim spot with a big jump rock for the more adventurous. For lunch we stopped at one of the taverns on the waterfront and enjoyed grilled vegetables and calamari. We lingered a little londer to shelter in the shade before the hot walk back up to the top of the cliffs.
Late in the afternoon we set off on a local ferry to nearby Thirasa to find our home for the next week. Here we met our friendly Captain, Mirko. A Serbian sea man who’d been living in Greece for 30 years and lived to sail and drink beer.
We stayed overnight in the small harbour before setting off the next morning. First stop a swim spot with crystal clear water. We cooled off before enjoying muesli and copious amounts of rich Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit. For lunch we made Greek salad and found another swim spot even more beautiful than the first.
We pulled up for the night in Koufonisi, where we dwarfed between a couple of superyachts. Our neighbours were wealthy looking middle aged couples. They were tended too by crews in all-white uniforms to complete the stereotype.
We had a quiet night with dinner at an outdoor taverna and enjoyed lamb souvlaki, zucchini balls, local beers and wine. We watched kittens playing in the garden nearby as the sun set behind the silhouette of a windmill.
Our next day was filled with more swim spots, Greek yoghurt and salad. We pulled into Skhinoussa for the evening and as night hit and it cooled off we took the winding path up the hill and into the town to a local restaurant for a banquet meal.
Every morning we piled on the sunscreen and spent some time relaxing, chatting and napping on the deck in the sunshine. We dived into the salty water off the boat and swam to beaches. As the day got too warm we listened to music and dozed off again under shade canopy at the back of the boat.
Our next stop was Naxos where we took drinks and Gyros to go and wandered to the headland to check out the sunset from the temple of Apollo. We tried local gelato - for me, a scoop of aegean Sea salt, pistachio, dark chocolate in a fresh waffle cone and a sneaky second scoop mango Greek yoghurt.
My favourite Island was Paros, where the beautiful Hellenic streets offered shade from the afternoon sun and boxy white architecture was complimented by bright pink bougainvilleas hanging above our heads. In the center of the old town a cute little port filled with tiny old wooden boats was surrounded by restaurants with limitless outdoor seating. When the sun went down it was buzzing with people enjoying drinks and dinner with family and friends.
Our last island for the trip was Ios. Where we hiked to the top of the hill to a church to watch the sunset. A party town full of rowdy tourists. We ate gyros amongst the party goers. Drinks were cheaper here and the crowd as well!
On our final night on the boat we returned back to the harbour in Thirasa where we spent the afternoon swimming and enjoying some drinks. As the night rolled in we sat on deck and watched shooting stars before being rocked to sleep by the waves for the last time.
We left Greece with plenty of memories, bigger bellies and a little more colour. The question is, where do we sail next year?
Yamas!

Typically molded onto the iconic round shape using plastic wrap, they can be garnished as elaborately or as simply as you'd like. Temarizushi is usually cooked on happy occasions like becoming an elementary school student in Japan. Let's learn how to make colorful Temari sushi. Temari is a traditional Japanese embroidered ball, which people used to play within Japan.
Instructions to make Temari sushi (sushi balls):
Add sushinoko powder to cooked rice while still warm. Mix well and let it cool. (Sushinoko powder - powdered sushi flavoring bought at Mitsuwa supermarket, Japanese store in San Jose).
Prepare toppings. <Grilled zucchini> Slice zucchini and grill them as desired. Olive oil is a nice touch when grilling. Gently salted and peppered. Completely cooled before making sushi balls. <Avocado + smoked salmon> Peel avocado skin and take pit out, and mash them. Add drops of lemon juice to avoid avocado getting brown and salt mashed avocado (just a hint). Cut smoked salmon in small pieces..
Spread Saran Wrap (or a similar product) over palm (about twice as big as your palm). Place a topping right in the middle. Place 2 tbsp of flavored rice on top, and wrap it to a size of golf ball..
FYI - Sweet sour sushi rice is usually made with cooked white rice mixed with vinegar, sugar, salt (+ konbu, a type of sea weed). I personally like using Sushinoko powder to avoid rice getting too wet. Specially, it’s easy!.
FYI - Temari means Japanese traditional handballs..
FYI - Toppings are usually (traditionally) sashimi fish. But you could try anything you like - cooked meat, pickled veggies, corned beef, ham, SPAM, cooked egg etc. Try your ideas and let me what you liked!!.

Today was a good day because today I got a package in the mail which I have been waiting on for a long time and that is the one that my lovely wonderful zucchini ordered from Thomas sanders store. Which contained a signed Virgil poster, signed ultimate story time CD, and a Virgil pin. Which is fantastic because I have been waiting to add it to my hoodie I made back in October. It’s no secret that Virgil is my fav side (I mean look at my blog) but I have been hiding my Virgil inspired hoodie, aside from those who have seen me in real life who have seen me wear my hoodie of cause !! I made this hoodie back before Halloween as in nz we have a con on the 25th of October and I basically wanted a Virgil hoodie for then but I didn’t possess the purple tartan to make one. So instead I made my own inspired version of his hoodie with what I had on hand. I even lined the inside of the plain black hoodie I owned. I even made my own symbol which is the icon I have been using for my blog. I also wanted something “cool” for the back and found an old wolf shirt and added that. It took me something like 2 days to make as I both hand and machine sewed every patch to the hoodie and then lined the inside. I am super proud with what I made and I love it so much not to mention it’s the warmest hoodie I own. TLDR : hi I’m Zach here is my face, my failed selfie with my cat and my Virgil inspired hoodie in which now has a Virgil pin added to it which arrived today.

Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore: A Eulogy
As I type this, it is sixteen degrees Fahrenheit outside (an improvement over the past few days, but a long way from the warm weather I left behind in Florida). Piles of slush line the sidewalks. I'm still exhausted from my first week back at work. Nevertheless, I braved the elements to catch a screening of Hostiles at Sunshine Cinema, because I recently discovered that the beloved theater could be shutting its doors later this month. And while the exact details surrounding its alleged closure remain sketchy (even the employees seem uncertain about what the future might bring), I feel compelled to make the most of whatever time remains.
True to its moniker, Sunshine significantly brightened up my 2017 moviegoing experience. The courteous staff and enthusiastic patrons made every visit an absolute treat (unlike some other chains that shall remain nameless). And what cinematic delicacies they offered: My Life as a Zucchini, Your Name, Belladonna of Sadness, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, Suspiria, Loving Vincent... it was a wild, wonderful ride, and like a kid at the Magic Kingdom, I'm devastated to learn that it may soon be coming to an end.
I'll probably share some thoughts about Scott Cooper's dark western later on, but today isn't just about enjoying a film; it's about celebrating a marvelous venue while I still have the chance. Cheers, Sunshine. I hope reports of your impending demise have been exaggerated, because it would be sad to see the sun set on such an iconic landmark of arthouse cinema.

Prompt: “Your choice of samsteve, sambucky or all caps and adopting! A kitty cat!” by @spooky-redwing ! I know this prompt is literally months old, but I’m going through every single prompt (except “green zucchini” because FUCK THAT.) The upside of me taking ages to do prompts? People forget all about them and they’re like fun surprise gifts!! Or something!
Their apartment made magazine spreads look like a joke. True, everything was second-hand, because Steve was cheap against being wasteful; and there were several huge bookshelves groaning under the strain of Sam and Bucky’s books; and the kitchen had a truly baffling number of wooden cutting boards, wooden spoons, wooden cups-- because Bucky had a thing for hand-made wooden utensils; and they’d had to change from light to dark decor after Steve’s paint spatters and charcoal smudges made Bucky pitch a fit; and Sam had a whole two shelves just for his records and god help you if you touched them without asking... But if you “pulled up the Googles” (Steve’s words) to look up “eclectic hipster apartment on a budget,” their home would have popped up first. It was a Pinterest addict’s wet dream. It would get dozens of “OMG GOALS” comments on Instagram. It was cozy, it was nicely furnished, and it perfectly reflected the three occupants. And then someone (Bucky. It was Bucky.) left the goddamn window open when all three of them were out on separate missions for a few weeks.
Sam got back first; his missions had been Stateside; something about the changing of the seasons really brought out the weirdo costumed villains. Sam had just fought an embarrassingly short battle against “Leaf-al Weapon,” and aside from general bruising, he’d have to contend with the inevitable YouTube videos of him getting dozens of pinecones fired at him. He’d already gotten messages from Steve and Bucky; Steve would be back that night, Bucky, tomorrow. He’d at least have a good few hours to shower, nap, maybe even finally break open the nice whiskey Director Fury had given him for his last birthday... The first thing that Sam noticed was that the rain had blown in through the open living room window. The second, was that the place smelled really weird, kinda... fishy? Sam eased his heavy wing pack off his shoulder and heaved a huge sigh before moving over to the window and sliding it partially shut. So much for relaxing -- he spent 20 minutes mopping up the water and praying it wouldn’t fuck up the hardwood too much. He snapped a picture of the mop leaning forlornly against the wall next to the window, sending it in a text to Bucky with the message “Thanks, man.” Okay, maybe skip the shower and go right to the nap part of his plan. When Sam pushed approached his open room door, he reeled back a little. It smelled like... tuna? What the hell? He barely had time to wonder if something had happened to his emergency rations before he got his answer. A pair of eyes glinted in the darkness near the floor, and Sam steeled himself for fighting an angry raccoon (because that was what his life was like nowadays) when a mew pulled him up short. A cat? A cat wasn’t necessarily less dangerous than a raccoon if it was feral and scared, but... Sam liked cats. Sure, he was the Falcon, but he appreciated the way that cats liked you on their terms. He could dig it. He cautiously flicked on the light and blinked at the intruder. It was small, just a kitten, really. Its coat was grey as the sky outside, the iconic ‘M’ of a tabby on its little forehead. “Hey, little dude,” Sam said softly. The cat looked away and lifted a leg to clean itself with gusto. “Ah. Not a dude,” Sam amended. He moved slowly, but all the same the cat hunched defensively, its ears flattened. Sam stopped by the closet, not moving any closer to the small animal, and checked the cardboard box in the corner-- ah. Sam had an emergency food stash (they all did; old habits died hard,) and one of the things he always had was vacuum-sealed packages of tuna. It seemed the clever little thing had found it and chewed through the packaging to get to the food inside. That explained what it’d been eating, anyway... but... “You been poopin’ in here, cat?” Sam asked, turning to look at his companion. She’d edged away from him, but was no longer scared-looking, merely blinking at him now. Sam was pretty sure from his experience with his sister’s pets that if the cat had been relieving herself in his room, he’d’ve known immediately. That stuff stank. Just in case, he checked his room, telegraphing his movements so as to not frighten the cat-- but she seemed to have forgotten about her nerves pretty quickly, because she hopped nimbly onto the bed and just watched him. “Ooookay, well... you’re weird. Dunno what else I expected,” Sam muttered. After a moment’s thought, he pulled out his phone. Human foods for cats Sam grimaced as he scanned the results; seemed like most things in the house wasn’t great for cats, especially kittens. Not even cow’s milk was great for them! Sam felt lied to by all those Saturday morning cartoons. He was halfway to Googling “nearby pet stores” when he paused. He should be looking for animal shelters, not a place to buy cat food and cat toys. The object of his deliberations was now sitting loaf-style on his duvet, watching with half-closed eyes. Her tail flicked now and then to show her interest, but otherwise she seemed relaxed. Dammit, she was cute, big golden-green eyes and a pink little nose. Dammit dammit. “Stormy,” he murmured, slowly extending his hand for her to smell. He was rewarded with a tentative sniff, which he took to mean she approved of the name. There was one little problem: their apartment building had a strict no-pets rule. Sam muttered under his breath as he found a soft old sweatshirt, carefully arranging it into a little bed for Stormy. “Okay, girl... you can sleep here for tonight and tomorrow we gotta find somewhere for you to--” He was interrupted by her looking away from where he was gesturing, putting her chin on her front paws, and closing her eyes. The cat had gone to sleep in the middle of his sentence. In the middle of his bed. “No,” Sam said firmly, crossing his arms. The cat didn’t even stir. “No, you can’t sleep on the bed. No. I’m not getting cat hair on my sheets.” Stormy’s response was to put a paw over her face. Sam felt his shoulders sag; he was tired, he wanted a nap before the whirlwind of energy that was Steve Rogers got home, and this cat had the audacity to be in his bed being adorable. Not okay. “Okay. You can sleep in here, but you. Are. Not. Sleeping. On. My. Bed.” --- “Sam? Sam, I-- oh.” Steve poked his head into the room through the half-open door and stilled, a fond smile softening his features. Sam was curled up on his side with his back to the doorway, snoring softly. He must have been really tired to have slept through the jingling keys and heavy footsteps that had announced Steve’s arrival. Steve carefully backed out of the room, closing the door most of the way so that the hallway light wouldn’t bother Sam. Sam didn’t stir, but unnoticed by Steve, a small form slipped from the protective cocoon that Sam had inadvertently formed around her, crept to the edge of the bed and nimbly leapt to the floor. When Sam woke with a start in the early hours of the morning, the little cat was nowhere to be found. He felt surprisingly disappointed; he’d been half-dreaming of jingly cat toys, purring and soft little paws. After a quick but thorough check, Sam had to admit to himself that she’d probably slipped back out through the open living room window, off to wherever her real home was. He’d planned to get her a little collar and everything. Dammit. The expression on his face as he settled back into bed was pretty close to a sulk.
“Mornin’,” Sam yawned hours later, shuffling into the kitchen. Steve, who was frowning at a food package of some kind, looked up with a smile. “Sam! You’re up. I thought you might miss the whole day, you were sleeping so late.” “It’s 8:30, Steve.” “I know; I’ve been up for 3 hours already.” “I’m so sorry to hear that,” Sam said dryly, leaning in to kiss the side of Steve’s head. “Way back in the 1960s, they invented this thing called ‘sleeping in,’ it’s a real damn shame you never got to try it.” “Wiseguy.” “One of us has to be, Cap. What you got there?” the last question was regarding the large canvas tote at Steve’s feet. Steve glanced down, a strange look of alarm passing over his features before he could school them. “I got these... uh... hhhhealth snacks. They’re healthy... and you can eat them and-- they’re good!” Steve tore open the package in his hand and popped a few dark green biscuits into his mouth. Sam watched as Steve flinched, grimaced, and chewed like a man eating sawdust. “Looks... tasty,” Sam deadpanned. Steve nodded, entirely unconvincingly. “They’re good! And really healthy.” “Tell me one thing, though--” Steve looked strangely alarmed again. “Yeah?” “Are they healthy, though? You’ve only mentioned it 5 times, I think.” “Oh, ha ha, Wilson.” “And anyway, I was asking about all of that stuff,” Sam continued, gesturing again at the shopping bag. Steve bit his lip and shrugged his shoulders in a would-be casual way. “Oh. I uh--” “Is that... rice?” Sam asked, moving towards the bag. Steve gratefully seized on the assumption, touching Sam’s arm to get his attention. “Yeah, yes! Yes. Rice! I’m... bringing rice... to the potluck this weekend.” “Rice.” “Yep!” “A bag of rice?” “Ye-- no. No, of course not. I’m... going to watch the YouTune to find recipes?” “Are you asking or telling me, man?” Sam teased gently. He knew Steve was a little bit embarrassed about his horrible cooking skills-- especially since Sam and Bucky could throw down in the kitchen. “I’m gonna cook a rice dish. For the potluck.” “Okay, baby. I mean... we got plenty of rice here--” “This is special rice.” “O...kay. And that?” Sam asked, gesturing to the large boxy shape straining the seams of the bag. “Is that a--” “Shelving unit!” Steve almost shouted. “It’s. A little bookcase. Got it on sale!”
“Yeah, you’re always saying you need more space for your books,” Sam agreed, smiling fondly. “Sure am. I’m gonna... watch YouTune--” “YouTube.” “YouTube, yes. I’m gonna watch some... in my room. With the door closed. I need to focus. For the recipe.” “Steve, you don’t have to make up some story if you just want some alone time to jerk off, man. We’re all adults here.” “Wh-- I’m not! Not right now! I’m really gonna--” “Mhm. Okay, whatever weirdo stuff you’re doing, have fun.” Sam leaned up to kiss Steve on the mouth, and then made a face. “Those health snacks taste rank, man.” Sam could have sworn he heard a weird jingling noise as Steve walked away with the bag. --- “Sammy,” Bucky groaned, slumping his considerable body weight on Sam’s shoulder. Sam absent-mindedly pat the top of Bucky’s head, hmmm?ing in response. “I missed you.” “You also missed like 10 showers, Barnes. Jesus.” “I was travelling for a week! No time for luxury.” “Basic hygiene? Not a luxury.” “Yeah, yeah. I’ll shower after you hug me.” “Ohhh, no. Ohhhh no no no no no.” “Take one for the team, Sammy. I been starved for affection and all.” “You were only gone for a month,” Sam grumbled even as he got to his feet and held his arms out to Bucky. “I was gone for a whole month,” Bucky sighed, sinking into Sam’s embrace and breathing him in (Sam was subtly trying not to breathe Bucky in.) “Okay, I feel better. Thanks, Sammy. I... I really did miss you.” “I-missed-you-too-now-shut-up-and-go-shower.” Instead, Bucky made a big show of kissing Sam’s neck and jawline, being as noisy as possible while Sam pretended to hate every second. “Now that I’ve marked you with my scent--” “Aw, nasty.” “--gonna go see how Blondie’s doing.” “Mmm, I wouldn’t,” Sam said thoughtfully. Bucky’s eyebrows crept up. “Why?” “Steve’s acting weird.” “... gonna have to narrow that one down a little.” “Weirder than usual. I think he wants a little alone time or somethin’.” “Oh. Well-- yeah, okay. I’ll go shower and... you can make me a late breakfast?” “Try again.” “I’ll go shower and we’ll make breakfast together?” “Ding ding ding.”
Steve heaved a huge sigh and then made a face as he smelled his own breath. He’d gotten so caught up in reading the ingredients on the bag of cat treats that he’d had to eat the damn things to hide them from Sam. They were disgusting, and even though Steve had frantically rinsed out his mouth in the washroom, the taste lingered. “The things I do for you,” he smiled gently down at the small grey cat curled up on his desk. The kitten, which he’d named ‘Slate’ because of her grey coat, raised her head and watched inquisitively as Steve set out the litter box he’d just bought. She sat all the way up when he hefted the small bag of litter (that he’d claimed was rice to throw Sam off) and filled the box, and before Steve had even finished taping the bag shut, she had trotted over to the litter box -- “Oh, wow,” Steve winced, covering his nose. Such a small animal shouldn’t be able to make such a stink, he thought wryly as he slid his window open a little to air out the room. Slate finished her business, kicked litter over it (Steve was relieved) and then became intensely interested in attacking Steve’s shoelaces as he tried to untie his sneakers. He found himself immensely charmed (even though her tiny claws were really sharp.) He’d never thought himself to be a cat person, but she was rambunctious and clearly unafraid despite her small size. He could relate to that. Listening to her ridiculous mmnyam nyam nyam nyam sounds as she wolfed down kitten food from a bowl Steve had pilfered from their kitchen just made him even more sure. He’d have to find a way to convince the other two to let him keep her. --- Bucky rapped loudly on the door, still towelling his hair from his shower. “Steve? Hey, Sam says you’re jerkin’ it to some cooking videos or something--” “What?! I’m not!” “--but I’m lettin’ you know I’m back. You coming out soon?” Bucky heard a lot of shuffling and a very quiet “Shhh sh sh sh, be good” and ... decided he didn’t want to know. He was tired and wanted to play grabass have a nice breakfast with his guys. Whatever weird shit Steve was getting up to could wait. “C’mon, Steve... Sam said he’d make his blueberry pancakes.” Sam didn’t have super hearing, but he still made a sound of protest from the living room, and Bucky corrected himself again. “Sam said I could help him make blueberry pancakes.” Bucky shrugged and was about to turn away from the door when it finally opened a crack, letting out the overwhelming smell of Steve’s scented candle. Steve was wearing a hoodie, which wouldn’t have been unusual except for the fact that it was the middle of summer and the man almost melted into the floorboards if the temperature crept above 30 degrees. He had his hands stuffed into the pouch pocket, looking shifty. Bucky only took another moment to decide not to ask, yet again. He just wanted pancakes. Sam, on the other hand, paused in the act of washing blueberries. “Why the hell are you wearing a hoodie, Steve?” he asked. Steve was already sweating a little and his whole posture screamed I’m hiding something oh god please don’t notice. “You feeling okay?” he continued, a thread of concern in his voice now. Bucky raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything, knowing the signs when he saw it. Steve had probably gotten a bad tattoo or something, and was waiting for it to fade before the other two saw it. (It wouldn’t have been the first time, sadly.) “Yeah, just a little chilly,” Steve said, entirely unconvincingly. Bucky turned a flat look upon him then, crossing his arms. “You’re chilly, Steve.” “A little.” “It’s August.” “Sure is! Autumn’s around the corner.” “You’re sweating.” “Because I’m warm now. In the hoodie.” “You think I was defrosted yesterday, Rogers?” “Jesus, Buck.” “What’re you hiding, Steve?” “Yeah, man. You’re fooling exactly no one here,” Sam interjected. His Single Unimpressed Eyebrow Raise couldn’t be beat, and Steve felt the sudden urge to blurt the truth-- partially spurred on by the fact that Slate, hidden in his hoodie, had just nipped hard at his fingers. She wasn’t happy being bundled up like that, but Steve didn’t trust her alone in his room. There were too many electrical cords to chew, too much paint to get into, too many irreplaceable objects to knock off of tables and break. “What’s with the third degree, guys?” Steve asked, scowling a little. “Okay, fair. If you wanna act like a weirdo, that’s your right,” Sam said reasonably. Steve was in the middle of agreeing when Sam continued: “But you’re on pancake duty now.” Steve slowly took his hands out of his oddly bulgy pocket and began shuffling over to Sam. Slate, no longer being gently held in place, immediately started squirming; but luckily Bucky was too busy getting the rest of the ingredients to notice, and Sam was measuring out buttermilk with intense concentration. “You okay, Steve? Really?” he murmured. Steve opened his mouth to say ‘Of course--’ Unseen to the other two men, Slate leapt out of Steve’s pocket and darted down the hallway-- Steve whirled and tried to catch her-- -- and the bag of flour he’d been sifting into the bowl flew into the air, coating almost everything in a fine white powder. Sam, looking oddly artistic with his long eyelashes now dusted a stark white, slowly lowered his measuring cup and just. Looked at Steve. “I’m going back to bed,” he said calmly. “Because this has to be a nightmare.” “Steve, what the hell was that?” Bucky asked rather less calmly. He’d just washed his freakin’ hair! “Shit-- I’m sorry, guys. I’ll clean it all up, I promise.” “That much is obvious,” Sam said, using his hands to fluff flour from his hair. Bucky grinned at him. “You finally look your age, Wilson.” As Sam puffed up like an angry cat, Steve quickly scanned the floor for Slate. He saw a clear set of little pawprints in the flour and he hastily used his foot to scuff them, not wanting her presence to be detected. In the end, the three of them cleaned up the kitchen together, and Steve finally stopped being weird, peeling off his hoodie. Sam declared that shirtless sweaty Steve Rogers was grounds for partial forgiveness for the flour incident. Bucky kept getting distracted; he could have sworn he kept hearing the faintest patter of small footsteps on the wooden floors down the hall. Steve spent the rest of the evening peering under the couch and in corners, giving entirely unconvincing answers as to what he was searching for.
Bucky’s eyes shot open and he took a second to remember where he was-- not draped heavily over Sam and Steve in one of their rooms, but alone in his bed. He usually slept alone for the first few nights after returning from mission; as much as he wanted nothing more than to be with the others, post-mission nights also meant nightmares, which meant staying away from the last people he’d want to hurt in a dream-induced panic. It fucking sucked. But he’d woken up for a reason. He’d had some of Sam’s mama’s special tea to knock himself into a semi-peaceful sleep, so... Someone’s here. He felt his heart rate kick into high gear, his muscles already tensing for a fight. His gleaming metal fingers inched under his pillow, where he kept a large hunting knife, and-- Something small leapt onto the bed and immediately bit his toe. He just barely kept himself from kicking out in terror, realizing quickly that... it was a cat. A kitten, really, small and dark in the dim light from the outside street lamps. What the fuck? Bucky let go of his knife and willed himself to calm down; unless Hydra had really changed their tactics recently, he doubted the cat was here to kill him. He cautiously moved his foot away from the playful (and sharp) kitten, sitting up in bed to get a better look by flicking on the bedside lamp. It wasn’t very large, but it didn’t seem to know that; it was already crouched for another ‘attack,’ its little tail swishing back and forth restlessly. It seemed to be grey, with dark swirling marks all over its body. It was... kind of cute, actually. “How the hell’d you get in here?” Bucky muttered, feeling the smallest smile tugging at his lips. He’d always liked cats, had wanted to adopt one-- but he assumed the other two weren’t keen on them; plus, their building had a strict no-pets rule. Bucky was watching Little Grey (he wasn’t the most poetic guy, sue him) prepare to attack his metal hand and hid it under his blanket, thinking that it probably wasn’t great for little kitten teeth. Or any teeth, for that matter. He offered his flesh hand instead, cautiously extending it to her for her to smell. She didn’t hesitate before pouncing on it, all energy and an excess of bravery. She kinda reminded Bucky of Steve and Sam, although Sam would vehemently deny being reckless. Yeah, right. Soon enough, Little Grey fell asleep with her tiny head cradled in Bucky’s hand, and the idea that something so small and helpless trusted him ... it was almost too much. He watched her little paws twitch as she dreamed, and even when he fell asleep he didn’t move an inch. He didn’t want to wake her. --- Bucky was spared wondering how he was going to feed the cat in the morning without alerting the others to her presence; the moment Bucky woke, he saw that she was sitting on the edge of the bed watching him. Waiting silently. Kind of creepy, actually. Maybe the cat was more like him, after all. Little Grey jumped nimbly to the floor, trotted over to the door, and let out an impatient mew. “Shhh sh sh sh,” Bucky shushed her. He paused. He’d heard Steve make a similar plea yesterday when he was locked in his room, hadn’t he? The moment Bucky opened the door a crack, the kitten darted into the hallway. He... didn’t know what he’d expected, actually. He almost slipped on the wooden floor; his socked feet didn’t offer much traction as he tried to shuffle after Little Grey. But it was too late. She’d disappeared into Sam’s room, having taken advantage of the partially open door. Bucky bit his lip and tried to make a hasty plan to scoop her out of there without waking Sam up. It shouldn’t be difficult; Wilson was a fairly heavy sleeper most of the time. If Little Grey could just keep quiet... Of course, she chose that moment to really let loose with a loud myaaaah that Bucky could hear clearly even from the hallway. And then two more loud, high-pitched mews followed. He sighed and inched forward, already steeling himself to explain her presence. “Stormy! Hey, you little thing, where’d you get off to, huh? Had me worried.” Sam’s voice rasped from the room, still hoarse with sleep. Well, that was unexpected. Bucky pushed open the door to discover Steve and Sam still tangled in the sheets, yawning and barely awake. “--her name’s Slate,” Steve was correcting Sam. Sam scoffed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes with one hand while scooping up the noisy kitten with the other. “This is what you were hiding yesterday, Steve? Stormy?” “If by ‘Stormy’ you mean ‘Slate,’ then... yes.” Bucky entered the room fully, making the other two look up in varying levels of alarm. “I can explain,” Steve started. “You left the window open, and I couldn’t kick her out--!” Sam protested. Bucky just shook his head and shuffled over to join them in Sam’s bed. “Her name’s Little Grey,” he said without further explanation. Steve made a face. “What happens when she gets bigger? ‘Little’ isn’t going to make sense...” “And what, ‘Slate’ is better?” Sam snorted. “What is she, nail polish?” The kitten was already playing, chewing on the string of Sam’s hoodie. He wasn’t even pretending to be mad about it, just watching her with a dopey smile. Steve gestured subtly to his phone on the nightstand, and Bucky picked it up and slipped it into Steve’s waiting hand. Sam didn’t even notice them taking pictures of him cuddling and cooing at Stormy Slate Little Grey the kitten. “Okay, so. She played us,” Sam murmured. “Smart girl.” He looked up at the other two, and, seeing the pleading expression on Steve’s face, handed her over to the blond. She immediately started climbing his shirt, using her sharp little claws, but Steve barely flinched. “So... what now? Bucky asked. “Landlord won’t let us keep her,” Sam muttered. “We just moved here; we’ve got, what, 8 months left on the lease?” Steve sighed, hitching one shoulder higher so that the kitten wouldn’t tumble off. “She can be adopted out real easy, she’s cute...” Bucky offered without any real enthusiasm. There was a long pause. “I mean... we can Internet search pet-friendly apartments, right?” Steve said moments later. “Would be easy,” Bucky agreed. They both turned to look at Sam, who was chewing his lower lip and frowning. “Okay, but one thing. If we’re breaking our lease, and packing up our whole life again for this little cat...” “Yeah?” “I get to name her Stormy.”

I watched Raw last week and liked that a lot! It’s pretty gross tho so if you don’t like body horror then.. pass.
Anything by Céline Sciamma is great - Girlhood, Tomboy, and Water Lilies are all amazing. She also wrote My Life As A Zucchini which I haven’t actually seen yet but it looks very cute (and very sad but like… that’s me)
I’m working through Agnes Varda’s filmography right now and she’s like… fucking iconic pioneer of cinema & if you’re interested in French film you absolutely need to check her out!! My favorite films by her are Cléo from 5 to 7, Le Bonheur and Kung Fu Master.
This is unintentionally becoming all female filmmakers but I’m gonna roll with it lol. You should check out the works of Claire Denis and Catherine Breillat as well.
Some other random films:
Persepolis - I’ve rec’d this before & it’s one of my favorite movies ever.
The Innocents
17 Girls
Breathe
Student Services
2 Days in Paris
EDIT: Here’s a list of films directed by French women! :) And here’s one of essential French films. Mubi is such a beautiful website I should really subscribe :*
