Outlander Executive Producer Maril Davis Breaks Down Season 7 Mid-Season Finale & Teases a Big Controversial Moment Next Year
Seven years in, audiences can’t get enough of the love, pain, war, heartbreak, drama, trauma, time-travel that Outlander delivers. The mid-season finale of Outlander surprisingly left Jamie and Claire smiling and arriving in Scotland! Jamie and Claire, happy? What? Is this Outlander? Yes, it is. And in its seventh season, it’s stronger than ever. Executive Producer Maril Davis exclusively sat down with SheKnows to break down that exciting mid-season finale, talk about the second half of season 7 which will air sometime in 2024, and even gave a few hints about season 8, the final season of this epic show, which went from the thousands of pages of Diana Gabaldon’s book series to television screens across the world. Davis also reveals her favorite moments in season 7 for both Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe. She discusses her favorite Jamie and Claire scenes, explains why one of their signature love scenes from the book couldn’t make it in this season, but teases that there’s plenty of intimacy next year, but also “tragedy.” In Austin at the ATX Festival in June, Davis and Balfe revealed Balfe would be directing a full episode for the first time in season 8. And when will that be exactly? Davis lets us in on that tidbit, along with a few other bits about Jamie and Claire’s love scenes, and why she’s excited for next year. And finally, she hints that there is a controversial scene that fans will see in the second half of season 7, involving Claire and not Jamie. Uh oh. Brace yourselves. Watch the video for the full chat.
Davis sat down with us on the 9-year anniversary of when Outlander first aired on Starz. “It is kind of hard to believe it’s been 9 years, it feels like yesterday we just (kind of started),” she admits. There was no better day to break down the mid-season finale and talk about the future of Outlander, but also the end, than the anniversary of the long-running hit show.
Starz / Robert Wilson
First up, Davis broke down the memorable Claire Fraser sword scene and pretty much confirmed Balfe is actually a bonnie wee swordsman. “She wields that pretty well, huh? I’m like, ‘Have you done this before?’” Davis recalls, “somehow that sword disappeared, I wonder where it is now?” She shed a little light on what it was like shooting the legendary sword scene, revealing that in the book it’s “quite a long scene!” “Certainly, there were discussions early on, could we cut that scene down a little bit, but we all decided, you know what, it was so iconic, and it’s such a powerful Jamie-Claire scene. You know I love that dynamic between them, that she basically wants to kill him, because he was almost killed. That is the Jamie and Claire.” Simply put, “That is quintessential Jamie and Claire, quintessential Sam and Caitríona. And I think they always have fun doing those scenes too. You know the back and forth… I love it.”
Starz / Robert Wilson
Season 7 compiles parts of books 6, 7, and 8, so it’s a lot to take on. Does Davis feel sad as a book reader about any story they couldn’t fit in. “Honestly, there’s a Marsali-Fergus storyline that we didn’t use, because Lauren (Lyle) had her other other show (Karen Pirie), and César (Domboy) was busy, and we just kind of decided in previous seasons we weren’t using them as much as we could. Also, there’s a Denzell storyline with a character named Dottie that we didn’t fit in, that I wish we would have, but it was such a big season, and there was so much material to fit in… As a whole, I loved this season.”
Starz / Robert Wilson
Although Davis loved the first half of season 7, she says she’s most excited for the audience to see the second half, “because it gets even crazier.” With the SAG-AFTRA strike happening, none of the actors have been able to chat about the show and all their amazing work this season, so we asked Davis what her favorite scenes for Heughan and Balfe were. She confesses she loved when Heughan was sitting in the dark waiting to confront (ahem, murder) Richard Brown (who deserved it). In the mid-season finale, “Turning Points,” Davis says, “I loved when he sees William across the enemy lines and he almost shoots him… And that kind of look of realization on Jamie/Sam’s face, I think it’s so powerful. It’s such a great season for him. He’s done an amazing job.” Davis can’t help but list all the scenes she loved Heughan in thus far, but teases he’s got great things coming in part 2 of season 7.
Starz / Robert Wilson
As for Balfe, like Heughan, Davis can’t just name one scene she loved. So, she names many. “I really do love the scene with Claire and Jamie, third or fourth episode, I mean I love her stuff with Tom Christie, both on the ship but also at the tavern was so amazing. But also, I love their (Jamie and Claire’s) love scene after that. Oh god, she’s had so many great ones too! I do love the sword scene, too. I love how she rips into Jamie… and is kind of so angry, because she was so scared. Caitríona always does that so well.”
Starz / Robert Wilson
As for Jamie and Claire love scenes, Davis chats about one of the love scenes that didn’t make it in the show. For those wondering if it was a question of timing or if it was difficult to translate that book scene to the screen, Davis says, “It was a combo. We just didn’t have, kind of, the set up that was described in the book is not the one that we had found. Wasn’t anywhere to really do that. Story-wise, it just didn’t fit this time. It’s always hard – listen, we’re not going to ignore the fact that we know obviously fans would want that scene, and we would want to do it too, it’s just hard to fit it in.” Davis continues to explain how the story might work well in the book, but then having to compress scenes in the show, “Sometimes in the book, it works out better those times in the book during war, like when Jamie’s like, ‘I have to have you,’ and Claire’s like, ‘I have to have you,” and you’re in the middle of some battle sequence… quite honestly, the transition on the screen is not as easy. In terms of the writing of something like that, and for the actors also, their justification of it too as well.” Fair point, it would be a little strange for Jamie and Claire stop the war to have sex. Or would it be the most brilliant way of stopping a war. You decide. Make love not war as they say. Is that where that saying came from? From Jamie and Claire ending wars with sex in the past?
But fear not, Davis assures everyone that there are “a few iconic scenes coming up in the second half, that if you’re a book fan that you’ll know and love, there’s some tragedy, but there’s also some lights at the end of the tunnel, and perhaps iconic scenes that are coming for Jamie and Claire, that I think book fans are waiting for. They know what they are. Wink, wink.” And Davis actually winks. So, she means it. She continues, “So, they’re coming. And also, some things I think fans aren’t looking forward to but still were essential to the book to do. And we did them!” Book readers will know what Davis is hinting about. And if we can play detective… Balfe also hinted at something coming down the pike with Claire and two men. The first already happened with Tom Christie. And separately, David Berry hinted that things get complicated for Jamie, Claire and Lord John. So, we asked Davis how they might have handled it, and she confesses, “I think it’s hopefully satisfying for the people who love that, and for the people who don’t love that!” Her answer only leads us to more questions! “Lots of wink winks going on,” she evilly laughs.
With the actors’ and WGA strikes happening, preparations for Outlander season 8 understandably have had to pause, but Davis let us in on what had been planned already. Balfe and Davis had announced at the beginning of the season that Balfe would have her directorial debut. Davis says they know which episode she’s doing, “We do know, she’s going to be first up, she’s not doing the first episode, but she’s going to be first up. Because the only we can pull off her directing is if she preps the first block, and that’s not to say she’s doing on in the first block, because sometimes we mix blocks around, but it’s the only way she can prep.” Davis goes on to explain for Balfe, who’s in the show so much, as director she’ll need about 5 weeks to prep. Doing it first will give Balfe plenty of time to prep.
youtube
As for scripts being broken down, and if everyone had read book 9, Davis says that season 8 will primarily be book 9 with some other stuff throw in. “Season 7 combines a dash of 6 and 7 and 8.” So how far did they get before the strike? She says, “We were in the room, so certainly some of the season is broken, we don’t have the end yet though.” Terrific, maybe that means Outlander will never end. Wink, wink?
Since the Droughtlander has begun and is going to be another long one, what can Davis leave us with? At the beginning of the season, she gave us one of her signature “heard on set” lines. She says she will look for one later to tease the next block of season 7! But leaves us with this, “I honestly think the second half is crazier than the first… William, Jamie, Claire, John – John Bell! Young Ian, everyone is going to have a real rollercoaster in the second half, and face kind of their worse fears. And… some come out of it okay, and some do not.” What?! She laughs, “Take from that what you want.” What we’ll take from that is months of stress. Thank you, Maril Davis. Wink, wink, wink. All the winks to you.
As for the exclusive Maril #HeardonSet line, you’ll just have to wait until she comes across it on her phone. As Claire Fraser would say, we’ve got time. Okay, fine, she’d probably say it more British, “We’ve got bloody time.” It’s true, there’s plenty of time to re-watch the first 8 episodes of season 7. And to be honest, you can probably re-watch all of Outlander, read all of Diana Gabaldon’s books, and all of our recaps. Before you know it, the drought will be over, and hopefully the strikes will be too (with writers and artists being fairly compensated for their amazing work), and all of a sudden, you’ll turn on your TV, and there Jamie and Claire will be having all the fun in Scotland with no stress or bad things happening at all. Wink, wink.
She Knows
Remember… Caitríona’s prep for directing a Season 8 episode will begin five weeks before the season’s filming starts. As an actor, she’s required on set during filming, so regardless of which episode she directs, she’ll do her prep before any episode is filmed.

The Pregnant Woman from Taubaté
It’s Mother’s Day here in Brazil, and this year I decided to do something different, exposing to the world the tale of a false mother who became an iconic meme and almost folk character in Brazilian culture. This is the story of a woman that claimed to be expecting quadruplets, her sudden fame, and her eventual downfall.
Maria Verônica Aparecida César Santos was a woman that lived in Taubaté (it’s pronounced as Tall - bah - Teh), a small town in the interior of the state of São Paulo. She lived a regular life with her husband, and their four-year old son.
Her husband had already undergone a vasectomy, but that didn’t stop her from announcing that she was expecting. First she thought she was pregnant with twins, but then she found out she was expecting quadruplets.
Soon she became a celebrity around the town. She told the news she was expecting four girls, and that their names would be Maria Klara, Maria Eduarda, Maria Fernanda and Maria Vitória. Each girl would be dressed in a different color to help to differentiate her from the other sisters. The ultrasound showing the four girls spread through the internet.
The news quickly spread through the whole country, and Brazil’s biggest channels wanted to interview her and to know her story.
On January 11th 2012, Maria Verônica appeared on Hoje em Dia, one of RecordTV’s (a national-wide channel she chose to appear) highest rated programs. She said on the show that she had put on thirty kilograms, 66 pounds, with her pregnancy, and her belly measured 1.82 meters, 5’11 inches.
The show’s hosts cried hearing her story.
Verônica received huge donations of children’s clothing, diapers, toys, and furniture, all to better receive the soon to be arriving quadruplets.
But one of the show’s hosts was suspicious. Maria Verônica strongly refused to show or allow people to touch her belly, and seemed to be super nervous and angry. There was also something strange about her belly. It was huge, but looked to be super light, and Verônica moved way too easily for a woman that was expecting four. And there’s the fact her husband had undergone a FREAKING VASECTOMY.
The channel went after the story and found the truth, and exposed it to the whole country.
Her belly. It wasn’t a beach ball like many people were thinking, but it was made of latex foam, fabric and silicone.
Her ultrasound was stolen from the internet and copied four times.
Maria Verônica was forced to return all the donations she had received, and her name lived in infamy. She and her family had to hide from the press that brought her story into the headlines. To this day she refuses to talk with the press. We still don’t know what motivated her to start this whole thing.
But the story of the Pregnant Woman from Taubaté became an internet legend. She became a huge presence in Brazilian memes and internet jokes.
These are the people from Taubaté, dressing like Maria Verônica for Mardi Gras/Carnival. She put the town on the map and people to this day still associate the town with falsity, fraud and fake people.
She essentially became the most long-lasting meme of Brazilian internet, and on this Mothers’ Day I want for all of you to stare at the moment when Maria Verônica appeared on national television, and it suddenly dawned on her that maybe she took things a little too far.
Happy Mothers’ Day my friends.😂😂😂

The stunning Virna Lisi-modern, timeless, with a hint of Renaissance flair-captured by Marisa Rastellini in 1964, embodying pure icon status💐💐💐
Virna's journey to stardom in Italy kicked off in the late '50s with small roles in film and theater. But it was her radiant smile in a toothpaste commercial that stole the show, giving rise to the saying, "With a mouth like that, she can say whatever she wants." And indeed, she made good on that promise🌹
By the '60s, Hollywood came calling. America was on the lookout for its next blonde sensation, and with her golden hair and that unmistakable mole just below her lip, she seemed like the perfect candidate. Fate, however, had different plans. After charming Jack Lemmon in How to Murder Your Wife and gracefully deflecting Frank Sinatra's advances off-screen, she returned to Italy to fully embrace her craft, her family, and her life beyond the Hollywood lens🌵
She also turned down roles that would later be considered iconic-Bond girl Tatiana Romanova in From Russia with Love and the lead in Vadim's Barbarella. Virna was determined to avoid typecasting and resist pressures to bare it all on screen🌸
Her talent flourished as she moved seamlessly between comedic brilliance and deep drama, sharing the screen with legendary actors and winning audiences along the way. Her crowning achievement came in 1994 with her unforgettable role in La Reine Margot, directed by Patrice Chéreau. The performance won her both a César-making her the first non-French actress to do so-and the Jury Prize Festival award🎍
Virna Lisi holds a top spot in my personal Olympus of all-time coolest queens—a timeless beauty with genuine grace and sharp wit🌷
Today would have marked her 88th birthday🍂

otis &. olivia &. olena dreyman, nina's triplets. three of them are six now &. each children are different; otis loves football, olivia aspires to become a ballerina just like nina when she was young &. olena wants to become a painter. he often video-calling them &. helping their homeworks through chat as their father isn't in relationship with nina anymore. they have filled johann's parental idealism to become a father.
tobias lund, his best friend who lives in his berlin house. tobias is one of artists who lives in johann's berlin house upon his leaving to america. tobias has turned his house into an artist community living-home which consists about six people living in johann's house. when johann returns home, some of the people would leave but most of them stay because tobias insists that johann doesn't mind, &. johann does not mind. they had a fling together, but it didn't mean anything to either of them because he knows johann doesn't see him romantically.
two things your character regrets.
letting anaïs to drive during her six months of pregnancy. she was going to strasbourg during the weekend to visit her sister who was currently vacationing there. their driver was sick &. he had to go back to berlin for monday's schedule. anaïs had an accident &. lost the baby. until now, he regretted that he could have stayed &. drive her to her sister, but he didn't.
he didn't pull his mother on time from the rubbles. the autopsy had concluded that she was already dead from the gas but sometimes, he thought, he could have saved her. but now, the case is still open to determine whether it was an accident or murder with the possible suspects are his father ( who had gone missing ever since ) &. him. if he could have had pulled her on time, perhaps his name wouldn't be smeared &. he wouldn't have to deal with the threats from his blackmailer that claims to know about his father's past &. the link to the ' accident '
one phobia your character has.
perhaps it could be being ridiculed / catagelophobia. he is so self-reserved &. attentive about his image upon others that if gets ridiculed or lampooned or losing an argument in public space, he would sometimes having a panic attack in the bathroom. thus if he tries to absorb every knowledge there is &. attentively creating narrative without any loophole therefore he wouldn't get exposed or publicly shamed upon.

— 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎 𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐄𝐓.
name: patricia carosella.
name meaning: patricia is a name of latin origin that means noble or patrician.
alias/es: pat. in the runaway verse, she goes by the fake name sofia borbón, but not in other verses.
ethnicity: mexican / mestiza.
one picture / icon you like best of your character:
i love this picture because it's just The essence of pat. the outfit, the jewelry, the surroundings, the way she's looking at you like you're dirt under her shoe, everything. this is how she looks like 99% of the time.
three h/cs you never told anyone:
pat has maids coming to her home daily, and as a result she does literally zero chores. she hates cleaning with a passion. over time she's gotten used to have at least one maid around all the time, so she doesn't care about things such as having an incredibly personal conversation on the phone with a friend while they might be listening. it's like they're not even there.
due to her history, pat cares a lot about sexual assault victims as well as the femicide victims in mexico. she donates a lot of money to charities that try to find the missing women, or ones that fight against human trafficking. she's aware that a lot of the men she works with in the cartel participate in it, and it's one of the things she'd like to change if she was in charge of things.
pat and her family attended church weekly when she was a child, but she was never too much of a believer. she just liked singing at choir and hanging out with the other kids, but even when she was really young she remembers thinking :/ idk if this god guy actually exists. despite her skepticism, there was also a part of pat who feared god WAS real and he'd punish her for doubting him. she was convinced he would make her choke to death on the sacramental bread. she avoided eating it for months.
three things your character likes doing in their free time:
music. she can play piano and guitar, and she also has a very nice singing voice and a hell of a lot of stage presence, if she would ever get on a stage again. her parents used to say she was gonna be a bigger star than selena quintanilla, but well, life got in the way.
going out to dance. or to just have drinks with friends.
shopping. like any toxic rich person, pat thinks she's entitled to spend her money on whatever the fuck she wants, and she often splurges on useless luxury items.
people your character likes / loves:
ángel salazar is a npc i probably won't bring over to the rpc so he won't be part of her storyline, but i had to mention him because in my original writing for pat, he's very important to her. for those who remember the román days, that's not him, but his story is slightly inspired on him.
luisa ríos, her mom. they don't get along most of the time and pat has more than enough reasons to hate her, but she can't stop caring.
martina carosella; pat's aunt, javier's younger sister. they're besties.
santiago guzmán, pat's bodyguard and chauffeur. wherever she is, he's usually around. she's not sure if she'd consider him a friend, but she trusts him. in very vulnerable, drunken nights, she might've vented about one personal thing or two to him.
two things your character regrets:
getting involved with césar. she tries to forgive herself for it, because she was just a child who didn't know any better, but she often thinks about how different her life would've turned out if she'd never met him.
not reclaiming pristine airlines earlier. she was reasonably scared of the cartel doing another attempt on her life. but to think that she was broke for all those years when it was her right to inherit the company? those are years of her life that she wasted being poor.
one phobia your character has:
dogs. she was attacked by one as a child. the bigger they are, the worse her fear is, but tbh she's a little scared of the small cutesy ones too. they can smell her fear.

Louis Joseph César Ducornet: A Portrait of Talent, Resilience, and Artistic Mastery
Louis Joseph César Ducornet, a gifted French artist, overcame physical challenges that would daunt most, leaving an enduring legacy in the art world. Born with phocomelia—a rare condition that left him without arms and only one leg—Ducornet didn’t just overcome adversity; he redefined it, proving that physical limitations could not contain artistic expression. Painting with his right foot, Ducornet’s work in biblical and historical scenes garnered widespread admiration, affirming his place as a remarkable artist of the 19th century.
Early Life and Background
Louis Joseph César Ducornet was born on January 10, 1806, in Lille, France, to a humble shoemaker's family. From an early age, Ducornet faced significant physical limitations due to his condition. Yet, he displayed an uncanny determination to channel his creativity, using his right foot to draw with charcoal on the walls of his home. The Lille community quickly recognized his talent, offering support and encouragement. With their assistance, Ducornet pursued formal art training in Paris—a rare and prestigious opportunity that became the foundation of his artistic career.
Discovering a Passion for Art
Ducornet’s introduction to art was unconventional yet deeply inspiring. Holding a piece of charcoal between his toes, he discovered his innate talent for drawing. This realization sparked a passion that would define his life. As his community and family observed his dedication, they rallied to support his dreams, ultimately enabling him to study in Paris under renowned artists of the period. This support was not only financial but also emotional, providing Ducornet with the confidence to embrace his calling.
Artistic Training in Paris
In 1824, Ducornet arrived in Paris with high hopes. He studied under notable artists like Guillaume Guillon-Lethière and François Gérard, who recognized his immense potential. Despite the limitations of his disability, Ducornet was granted a government pension by King Louis XVIII to fund his education—a testament to his exceptional skill and dedication. Although he was ineligible for the prestigious Prix de Rome due to his physical condition, Ducornet’s talent earned him recognition and awards at the Salon exhibitions, where his work in biblical and historical themes left a lasting impression.
Ducornet's Style and Signature Works
Ducornet’s work is characterized by a unique fusion of vivid colors, emotional intensity, and precise detail, all achieved through his unconventional painting technique. His subjects often included religious and historical narratives, revealing his fascination with grand themes and moral questions.
Notable Paintings
"Repentance" (1828)This early work is a testament to Ducornet’s storytelling ability. Featuring powerful contrasts in lighting and emotionally charged characters, "Repentance" captivated audiences and critics alike, showcasing the artist’s prowess despite his disability.
"Mary Magdalene at the Feet of Jesus"One of Ducornet's most celebrated works, this eleven-foot-tall masterpiece captured attention for its vivid colors and intricate details. Purchased by the French government in 1840, the painting solidified his reputation and became an iconic representation of 19th-century biblical art.
"St. Louis Administering Justice"Displayed at the Lille Museum, this painting is a historical scene that highlights Ducornet's meticulous attention to detail. It exemplifies his ability to bring historical events to life with emotional depth and complexity.
Overcoming Challenges in the Art World
Ducornet’s disability posed significant challenges, especially in an era when physical limitations were often seen as insurmountable barriers. His exclusion from the Prix de Rome reflected the biases of his time, yet he refused to be discouraged. Instead, Ducornet used his art to redefine perceptions of disability, demonstrating that talent and determination could surpass conventional limitations.
Recognition and Awards
Ducornet’s accomplishments were not overlooked by his contemporaries. Critics, including Maxime Du Camp, lauded his ability to paint with a foot, equating the quality of his work to that of artists using their hands. Ducornet’s success at the Brussels Salon in 1836 further affirmed his skill and status as a respected artist. Through his accolades, Ducornet’s life and career became an emblem of resilience, illustrating the triumph of talent over adversity.
Lasting Impact and Legacy
Ducornet’s legacy is more than a collection of impressive works; it is a powerful narrative of perseverance that continues to inspire. His ability to paint with his foot, capturing intricate biblical and historical scenes, has left a profound impact on the art community. Ducornet challenged the art world’s understanding of ability and creativity, inspiring future generations of artists to overcome their own challenges.
Inspiring Future Artists with Disabilities
Ducornet’s story is a beacon for disabled artists around the world. His success proved that physical limitations are not impediments to greatness. By achieving widespread acclaim, Ducornet opened doors for others with disabilities, encouraging them to pursue their passion without reservation. His journey remains a testament to the power of determination, showing that art is not bound by conventional physical requirements.
Personal Life and Final Years
Despite facing physical and societal challenges, Ducornet’s personal life was marked by resilience and dedication to his craft. Establishing a studio in Rue Visconti, Paris, in 1845, Ducornet continued to paint and share his expertise with students until his death in 1856 at the age of 50. His commitment to art, regardless of personal hardships, stands as an enduring reminder of his strength and perseverance.
Ducornet’s Enduring Influence on Society
Louis Joseph César Ducornet’s contributions to art did more than bring him personal acclaim; they reshaped societal perceptions of disability. His work inspired a shift, encouraging people to focus on an artist’s talent rather than their physical limitations. Ducornet’s success has had a lasting effect, motivating both artists and audiences to recognize the value of diversity in the art world.
Conclusion
Louis Joseph César Ducornet’s life is an inspiring chapter in art history. His journey, from overcoming a rare congenital disability to achieving renown as an artist, demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit. Ducornet’s masterpieces continue to be celebrated, while his legacy as a pioneer for disabled artists endures. Through his work and his story, Ducornet leaves us with a profound lesson: creativity transcends physical boundaries, and true talent will always find a way to shine.
