Description: You and Higuchi are trying to praise an ugly decorative lantern, and Natsume is a cat.

A/N: A short fic for a Spooktober.

You were eyeing a decorative lantern on your table. It was a present from one of your distant uncles. He worked in a decor stores and, for some reason, took half of his paycheck in decorations.

Probably for presents.

You weren't against a new decor item. But, you were against this one lantern.

It was ugly. Not in a "cute ugly, "Halloween ugly" or a "funny ugly" way. In an "ugly and cheap" way. The mansion might not have a luxurious decor, but you still have standards.

And you can't get rid of it. Because your uncle used a courier to deliver the lantern to you, and you were currently on the video call with the uncle, and he knew and saw, that lantern were in good shape. And, if you threw it away, he will be disappointed.

"So, what do you think?" your uncle sounded proud of himself. You were thinking for the best way to answer his question. Higuchi decided to fill the awkward silence.

"It looks... unique." she tried not to look at the lantern or at the monitor. You slowly nodded.

"Yes... Unique..."

Your uncle frowned.

"You didn't like it?"

You quickly grabbed the phone and start circling around the living room, shoving it to your uncle.

"No, I like it. It will be the great audition for the room, see? Everyone will pay attention to it the moment they come in."

Higuchi lips moved, but she didn't make a sound. Thanks to Gide and Rimbaud, you started to learn, how to read lips.

"Not in a good way. It's ugly and have no place in this house." Higuchi noticed your look. "What? [Y/N], honey, don't tell me, that you disagree?"

You didn't show your disappointment in Higuchi. Because you weren't disappointed, and secretly agree with her.

Still, you continue your honeyed words to ensure uncle's happiness.

None of you noticed a calico cat jumping on the table.

"Hm, [Y/N], I must say, your living room needs more lanterns. I will send more similar... Get away from here, your beast! Get away from the lantern!"

You and Higuchi jumped, not expecting the yelling. And then, something crashed behind your backs.

Here, on the table, Mii-chan was sitting. One of his paw was stretched out. And on the floor were the remains of the lantern.

Your uncle screamed again.

"No! You won't get another lantern from me! Not until you taught your cat, how to behave!"

Your uncle ended the call. In a second, Natsume Soseki stand up from the table, dusting himself. He gave you a sly smile.

"I am sorry, Dear Muse, for taking away your lantern supply."

You and Higuchi huffed with laughter.

"Just help me clean this mess, and you are forgiven, Mr. Cat."

Natsume gave you another smile.

"Well, I could, but I have paws..."

Okay, who taught him him about that meme? Higuchi, who was standing near you, caughed and rubbed the back of her neck. She looked embarrassed and guilty.

Huh. Either Higuchi can read minds, or you are a seer.

You raise an eyebrow.

"You having paws doesn't stand in a way of your little war with salesman from the fish market. Or did Higuchi do most of the job?"

Now both Higuchi and Natsume looked embarrassed. Yes, you knew, that the duo, for some reason, didn't like that one guy from the fish market and have a mini war against him.

You rubbed your temples.

"Let's just clean up the mess and do something more interesting or productive."

Higuchi and Natsume nodded, agreeing with you.

Let's be honest: he is in trouble with you. The perpetrator, the accomplice or the one who just put more gasoline to the fire. He can be all of this.

"Oho? So that's the idea" Dazai said with a grin as you explained your idea, seemingly quite pleased "But... Needs some polish. Mind if I put some of my input in this?"

And just like in a double suicide he dreams, he will be by your side while Kunikida yells at the two of you, or whoever is in a position higher than yours.

Not that Dazai really cares about being in trouble: since did that even bother him? He will just be himself in such situations- joking, not even listening perhaps.

But if you feel somewhat bothered, well...

"Pfff- hahaha!" you heard Dazai start laughing, looking over at him "Did you see their face? It looked like a tomato, it was just too funny!"

He will not dramatize it, but as always making a joke out of it, trying to cheer you up in the process.

After all, Dazai doesn't wish for you to think of this as a negative trait or experience, wishing for you to have fun!

Because Dazai knows how to make up- he always does.

"C'mon, just a tiny little joke, why exaggerating so much jeez" said Dazai while his hands slowly snaked around your neck and then whispered in your ear, almost seductively sending a slight shiver on your spine "Want me to make it up for you?"

She will never agree to do anything with you if you are one prone to mischief. Would also try to stop you if she catches you.

But if you get in trouble for simply a bad timing,

She is somehow always the first to know what happened and that you are in trouble.

"He did what now?" Yosano asked as she looked over Ranpo, who was simply enjoying his lollipop. He didn't even reply, a muffled hum espaped his lips. Yosano simply sighed defeated and tired at the same time as she got up from her seat "Well then, if you'll excuse me"

She will reach where you are as soon as she can, walking down with calmness and grace as she puts herself between and the person who is lecturing you. She will apologize, and assure (emptily) that it won't happen again!

But when the other person leaves the two of you alone...

"Alright, darling" she said, her teeth gritted as she turned to look at you. Her arms crossed over her chest, Yosano's smile stiff as the anger "How about we chat a little?"

Now will be her turn to lecture you-

But don't worry! The only consequence you'll receive is to help her shopping and bring her bags around.

Higuchi is always Higuchi: passionate and protective, to an almost coddling degree. And of course this reflects on how she protects you.

She doesn't agree on what you do, and often lectures you.

"You can't just let this always happen!" she would as always say, pointing a finger towards you "You have to be careful, you understand?"

Yet, Higuchi is the one to help you. She would cover up, help you to get rid of the mess you did- hell, she would take the blame in your stead!

But one thing she cannot absolutely tolerate is when someone yells at you- she simply cannot stand it.

"He didn't do that on purpose!" Higuchi tried to explain, a bit too abrasively though, as she stood in front of you protectively while glaring at the other person.

"Ichiyo, please-!" you pleaded, not wanting this to go any further.

Ichiyo will fight tooth and nails for you- that can be of course a noble thing, since she wants to protect you. But is also one her of her weakest points in such situations.

Well, Atsushi isn't exactly the most forceful person on this list. In fact we might even say he is pretty weak.

He will try to be the voice of reason, tries to stop you, keeps an eye on you as well! But all for naught.

Most likely he got involved in one of your shenanigans while trying to stop you.

He often apologizes for you, is all he can do sometimes- he gets so nervous and apologizes so profusely, making sure you apologize as well.

"Just- just how?!" Atsushi asked, feeling exasperated, his voice cracking a bit as he asked that, after another one of your little messes.

You looked at him flustered for a second while playing with your fingers "Ehm... You see..." then you playfully hitted your head, sticking your tongue out "Bleh!"

"That's not an explanation !"

you have to be really mean to her to get her to snap. it's unlikely she will, given how nice she always is to you. sometimes, she doesn't even know that what you're saying is supposed to be rude, she's just glad you're talking to her.

eventually, you'll grow used to higuchi's personality around you; she won't change anyway. she loves you so much, but sometimes she gets frustrated with you.

"Dearrr~!!" Higuchi's voice called out, while she happily sprinted towards you with a bag in her hand. "Look! I got you snacks!!" Earlier in the day, you continuously asked her to leave you alone, and she got upset, but she left. And now she was back with gifts. "Uh-huh." Higuchi's smile turned to a small frown while she shoved it next to your face. "What's wrong..? Aren't you gonna thank me? I got your favorites!" But you just didn't respond. Why, though? Higuchi was frowning now, taking the bag back instead. "Did I do something wrong? Why aren't you taking it? Are you okay? I got these 'cause I love you, you know..!" Her voice trailed off, with an annoyed look in her eyes. "But I don't love you." Higuchi didn't accept this. Of course you loved her, you had to, after everything she did for you! "Yes you do, dear! -Probably thought you were trying to attack him at first

-Literally almost used rashomon on you when you got closer

-And then you hugged him, and he freaked out x2

-Quietly hugs you back in some confusion

-"Why me?" he doesn't understand why you hugged him

-He's a little thankful you did though, it just means you aren't really afraid of him, or afraid of being near him

-Lets go after a while, quietly thanking you for the hug

-Freaking out, blushing, and probably even fangirling all at once

-Hugging you back immediately, thinking about how this is one of the greatest moments ever

-Doesn't want to let go, but does after a few minutes

-Thanking you for the hug, trying to act normally without freaking out

-The most confused person on earth

-You just randomly walked up to him and hugged him? Now he's wondering what's going on

-Is this a type of prank? What're you trying to do?

-Confused yelling at you to ask what you're doing

-Slowly starts to hug you back

-Stays silent for a while and just stands there hugging you

-If you're shorter, he'll put his head on your head or shoulder, and if you're taller, his head is against or on your shoulder (by against I mean his forehead is close to your shoulder but not directly on it)

-Starts calming down a lot

-When you feel safe near someone you love, it can lead you to get tired and sleepy because of that safe state of mind

-Needless to say, he is very tired right now

-He doesn't exactly hug you back, he just let's you hug him and slightly rubs your back

-Doesn't really enjoy or not enjoy it, he's pretty conflicted with what he's feeling

-After a minute or so, he finally hugs you back

-He has one arm around your waist and the other closer to your shoulder, where your shoulder blade is

-He's hugging you pretty tightly, almost afraid to let you go

-If you're taller than him, his head is against your chest (closer to where your collarbone is) and if you're shorter than him, his chin is on your head

-The hug lasts for longer than expected because he doesn't want to let go, he doesn't want to lose you

-I can see him barely speaking during this hug, but also he might just start venting slightly while joking about his problems

-Might start asking for more hugs, probably even daily

-Enjoys the feeling of you hugging him, even if he didn't at first

Yukichi Fukuzawa:

Fukuzawa had just gotten back from a long do in the office to see you happily humming and softly singing to yourself.

Fukuzawa stood in the door frame for a second before going up to you and giving you a kiss on your forehead as a greeting.

He really liked hearing you sing and only wished you could do it more often.

Akiko Yosano:

Yosano woke up with a headache from the late night you two spent drinking and having fun.

Some how you weren't in bed but were making breakfast while humming to yourself occasionally breaking the hum to sing to yourself.

Seeing your girlfriend walk over to you made you stop singing but she told you to continue as she gave you a hug placing her head on your back while you kept making French toasts.

Atsushi Nakajima:

You were typing away on your laptop with your earphones/headphones on softly singing the song you were listening to when Atsushi walked in.

He didn't want to disturb you but he enjoyed your singing so much that he stayed a while but when you looked up to see if Atsushi was standing there he ran away.

Doppo Kunikida:

Kunikida hates distractions especially when he's working away but oddly enough he doesn't mind it when you hum a song to yourself, singing a few words here and there.

He will continue working and acting as if he cannot hear you but secretly he enjoys listening to your humming.

Kenji Miyazawa(platonic):

When Kenji hears you singing he will listen to you happily and ask you what you were singing afterwards.

He might mention a song some of the villagers used to sing when he was in the village.

Kyōka Izumi(platonic):

She'll compliment your singing abilities and ask you to sing to her her favourite song or something.

She'll be very happy if you sing to her.

Osamu Dazai:

You were cleaning while singing to yourself and moving your body as if in a dance, not noticing Dazai staring at you while sitting in a chair.

You turn around and almost let out a yelp before turning your head in embarrassment, you could feel your face getting warm and you heard a light chuckle come from Dazai.

He was amused by your quick and cute reaction when you saw him, he didn't help you clean though.

Ranpo Edogawa:

Ranpo was in a sweets shop looking at all sorts of candy while you stood outside petting a cat who lay in the spring sun.

You were humming a sweet melody to the cat as it slept the day away, enjoying your soft touch and the warm sun.

You heard someone clear their throat loudly behind you, while you turned your head to see who it was the cat had run away. The person who scared the cat away was Ranpo.

'Can we leave now?' He asked although it sounded more like a whiny demand than anything.

While at home he asked you if you could do what you did with the cat: pet his head while singing to him.

Ichiyō Higuchi:

The moment she heard your voice sing she knew she was in love.

She would try to be as close to you while you sang as possible but not too close so you wouldn't see her.

When you stop singing (weather you know she's there or not) she'll tell you how cute you were and how you should sing to her every night.

Sakunosuke Oda:

Oda has opened the door to your shared apartment to the smell of curry and the sound of your voice softly singing and humming.

He stood in the hallway taking off his coat slowly from feeling exhausted and from wanting to stay there and listen to your voice.

Once he took off his coat and shoes he walked up to you and gave you a tired hug from behind and asked when the meal was going to be finished before giving you a kiss.

Edgar Allan Poe:

Poe was in his study writing away with Karl chilling near by. He was feeling a bit lonely since you left somewhere for a while and Karl wasn't too interested in spending his time with Poe.

Karl's head perked up and ran away towards the front leaving Poe all alone. He lay his forehead on his desk in defeat. He soon heard a soft melody being sang, enjoying your singing he sat with his head still down, being lost in your melody.

When he heard the door open his head quickly jerked up to see you standing with a smile, he smiled his awkward smile back at you.

Fyodor Dostoevsky:

You over heard Fyodor playing and the song got stuck in your head.

Fyodor told you he'd be gone for a while so you decided to read a book for a while when the song made its way to you and was stuck in your head again, you started humming the song hoping it

Sōseki Natsume:

He sneaks into the room in his cute little kitty form and continues to listen while taking a light nap somewhere in the corner.

When you find and stop singing he'll notice even if he in asleep.

His cute little kitty head will look up to see why you stopped until he realises it's 'cause of him.

He won't think much of it and go along with his day.

And that man was no match for you. Akutagawa couldn't even believe his own eyes. You were the embodiment of power and grace.

You fought and destroyed without an ounce of anger.

Just purely going along. And he found himself just falling the moment you came down.

He's staring, with a certain look in his eyes no one has seen on him before. Was it...admiration? Softness?

You two had an actual convo. And his overflowing joy as you praised him so much, with words he always wished to hear from Dazai himself. But now, did he care?

Akutagawa loves you.

And he won't take shit from others who say otherwise. Let's just say Mori had no choice but to approve.

Today was the day Higuchi finally decided to tell Akutagawa what she felt for him. It wouldn't be easy, she knew that much; but she simply couldn't stand hiding her feelings anymore. Every time she saw him the unrelenting voice in her head urged her to confess: Tell him tell him tell him tell him...

And now she was ready to do it. Higuchi marched towards his office, going over the plan in her mind: she was going to knock on the door, ask if she can come in, drop off the reports for the day then ask for a few minutes of his time. And after that she'll finally confess her unyielding love for him.

By the time she reached the mahogany doors of Akutagawa's office she had managed to calm her rapid heartbeat. With a quivering hand, she got ready to knock on the door when she heard a mirthful giggle.

"Ryu, stop we're at work"

"You think I care about that?" someone replied in a low voice. The recognition of the man's voice was like a punch to the stomach; it was Akutagawa.

Carefully, she pried the door open and peaked inside the room. The setting sun cast long streaks of light through the windows, bathing the office in a sea of gold. Higuchi's gaze wandered across the room, landing on your figure.

You were perched on Akutagawa's wooden desk with your skirt pulled a little above your knees. Silky black tresses fell just above your shoulders, framing your face in the most beautiful way. With an elegant movement you sweeped your curtain bangs to the side, exposing your visage.

Saying that you were pretty or cute would be an understatement. No, you were straight up gorgeous; with delicate yet fierce features and vivid eyes which bore a shadow of longing. Your lips curled in a soft smile as you batted your lashes at the man in front of you.

"You should care, darling" you stated in a voice that reminded Higuchi of windchimes.

Akutagawa's hands traced the expanse of your thighs, sliding around your waist as he positioned himself between your legs.

"Too bad I don't" he said in a voice laced with urgency. He had his back turned so Higuchi couldn't see his face, but she was certain that it mirorred yours: a languid smile and half lidded eyes

Usually, when Higuchi suspected that someone had a crush on Akutagawa she would throw fists, but now she felt too defeated. She felt a pang of jealousy when the man leaned in and traced freathery kisses along your neck, earning a chuckle from you. Your arm hooked around his neck, pulling him closer to your body; his hands squeezed the plush of your hips. You let out a small moan when he kissed your sweet spot and his legs slightly shook; your lithe fingers entangled in his raven locks, causing him to hiss lightly. Action-reaction. Higuchi could never get anything except a frown of a curse out of him.

And then again, how could she ever dream of comparing herself to you? You looked like a goddess and were probably smarter and more powerful then her. Even from afar she coould tell that every pore of your body exuded confidence and something ethereal, like you were bathed in moonlight.

Suddenly, your head tilted to the side and your eyelids fluttered open. Your gaze met hers.

Higuchi could see your eyes shot open, but you tried your best to conceal your surprise. Even so Akutagawa sensed the light jolt of your body and quickly pulled away, his eyes following yours and...

"Higuchi" he hissed "What the fuck are you doing here. Come inside right now."

His frame immediately covered yours as you haphazardly fumbled with your skirt and shirt.

Higuchi's legs moved without her knowing; she opened the heavy door and stepped inside with her head bowed down.

"Senpai I can explain-" she began in hushed voice but she was quickly interrupted by her superior.

"What were you thinking? Do you know how sick it is, spying on other people? Not to mention that I only get one break and now I have to spend it scolding you. You -"

"Hey Ryu. Let her be, ok? Don't yell at her" you said in a gentle tone, placing a hand on his shoulder.

The second he heard your words any trace of anger in Akutagawa's eyes dissipated; as if he were under a spell. He slowly turned your head to face you with an apologetic look on his face.

"I'm sorry she just... always does that."

That. Higuchi felt the weight of the words like a blow. That... She always interrupted, annoyed, displeased, made a mess of things. Tears started blurring her vision and when she finally raised her head, she saw the two of you like static on a tv.

"Higuchi" you said in the same gentle voice. "Are you here to turn in those reports?"

Without waiting for her answer you took the envelope from her shaking hands and placed it on Akutagawa's desk.

"Can we help you with anything else?" you then asked, a hint of urgency in your voice; it was a kind invitation for her to leave. Her lips quivered as she tried to apologize for the intrusion but Akutagawa once again cut her off.

"Just get out of here, please. You have duties you need to tend to."

The golden haired woman turned on her heels and walked out of the room, further down the dark hallway. She could still hear your muffled voice as you scolded your boyfriend for being so rude to her.

"You can't treat her like that, Ryu. She always works so hard for you, at least be nicer ok love?"

Higichi's stomach twisted upon hearing your words. Even through she intruded your privacy today and witnessed an intimate moment, something only the two of you should share you still took her side.

Of course, you were the better person and she was never going to compete with you. She straightened her back and, with tear stained cheeks, walked back inside her office and shut the door; sheltering herself from the world she left behind.

you knew not to panic in such situations. waking up to disheveled sheets that had turned frigid, indicating that ichiyo had been gone too long. you allowed yourself to sleep in, given that you had the day off and decided you'd just lounge around, take a break and plan something nice for your lover in the meantime.

a stress-free period, but all you felt was anxiety when you dialed her number and got sent straight to voicemail repeatedly. this time, you decided you might as well actually leave a message when the line rang for too long.

"'chiyo, honey, call me back when you get this. just wanna make sure everything's okay, alright? I miss you already, love y-"

"who the hell is this?"

you'd been anticipating the automated voice so much that it barely registered that you didn't actually hear it this time, and a quick glance at the screen confirmed that you really were on call with someone on the other end of the line. the voice was raspy, definitely not hers, so you echoed back the question.

"um, who are you?" you challenged with a hand on your hip that they couldn't see.

except, instead of a response, you heard some distant voices on the other line, one rather hyper as it babbled something you interpreted as 'akutagawa-senpai!'. a few noises ensued along a brief chaos you couldn't see, and suddenly the phone was put back to someone's ear as they panted. you could recognize that heavy breathing anywhere.

"hey, hey, 'chiyo, what's going on?" you spoke softly, hoping she was alright and not trying to scare her.

she stuttered nervously. "sorry, I'm so sorry, I must've dropped my phone somewhere and akutagawa-senpai picked it up and-"

"woah, was that the akutagawa you're always talking about?" you couldn't believe it; after being with her for so long, you'd only ever heard stories about the people with whom she worked. you agreed that the kind of place where she operated was dangerous and it was better not to get yourself involved, so she kept you separated from everything she did. you appreciated the thought, but sometimes you felt a little frustrated that you couldn't meet the people in her life— you didn't even think they were aware ichiyo was married.

a tired sigh confirmed your theory. "look, [_____], I'll call you back when-"

"higuchi, who is that?"

akutagawa seemed to be speaking again, and quite frankly you didn't like his tone. if you were on speaker, you'd set him straight but for now you just listened to ichiyo ramble a response while not actually answering the question. he sounded tired of the bullshit and eventually the line was cut off harshly. something told you that you won't be able to call this number anymore.

music played on the speaker as you hummed, tray of baked goods getting pulled out of the oven by your gloved mitten. the smell filled out the rather small place you shared with both your wife and sister-in-law, but the latter was out for the week on some kind of trip and left you all alone. you'd gotten used to ichiyo's erratic lifestyle, sometimes disappearing during the day and barely making it home at night. she sounded exhausted when she did arrive, so you didn't mind taking care of the little things.

proud of yourself, you put the assorted goods in various plates and left them on the table, waiting for her to come home. you couldn't call her, obviously, since it appears her boss had pulverized the device out of rage. you'd be worried if not for the fact that, based on her stories, it seemed this was a regular occurrence and she didn't mind it. you'd feel jealous of the man if it weren't for the fact that she fawned over you much harder in all the days you'd known her. she knows what she wants and does everything to get it, you'll give her that. by nature, ichiyo was incredibly caring and it was difficult to hold that against her

something was in your hands as you lounged on the couch, passing the time: a book, your phone, anything to keep your mind occupied. the sun had set and you were getting impatient, as nighttime meant she was going to be out until the early hours and might even come home with a particular scent on her clothing that resembled blood and death. how a person so sweet, so feeling could get into this kind of business was beyond you, much less how she could last thing long. she once told you that the only reason she could keep her mind this long was coming home to your soft kisses and pampering.

a clicking of the front lock and the creaking that ensued signaled that you were about to do that once more, and you strolled over to the entrance with an excited smile.

"welcome home, 'chiyo, how wa-" you caught yourself off when you saw a splatter of crimson along her cheek. your lips tugged downwards into a frown as a reflex, and you sighed gently once you saw her expression. she seemed so conflicted, not about whatever crime she'd done but about making you worry so quickly. "hey, hey, it's okay, c'mere."

with that, you pulled her into your embrace and set a kiss on her hair. it still smelled like that shampoo you'd bought her, a subtle vanilla and chamomile that reminded you of her. her entire body slumped into your strong arms, and she let you drag her across the house, shedding her shoes, meticulously pulling the elastic out of her hair to let her messy bun fall into a bob, then helping her out of her unbuttoned jacket. you pulled her body into yours as you laid down on the couch again, but this time with her head shoved into your chest, which was one of her favourite things to do.

"wanna talk about it?" you asked, dumbly, one of your regular antics. of course she wanted to talk about it; she did an awful job keeping things to herself anyways.

so, you listened carefully while she recounted stories with fake names to keep you protected and vague details in certain places, specific in others. she didn't seem hungry, so you just skipped the food for now and dragged her to your bedroom. you were about to throw her pajamas and get her to change so you could just lay down in bed for the evening, but the burgundy was darkening on patches on her arm and you couldn't help but stare at it.

"—so akutawaga-senpai showed up and I felt a little stupid but he-" you interrupted her by grabbing her shoulders and giving her a little shake.

"honey, can we clean off... that..." you danced around the topic, but she knew exactly what you meant when your eyes kept darting to certain areas of her skin. she nodded and you gave her a quick kiss on her forehead. "I'll run the bath and we can scrub it off. keep going, I'm listening."

she continued speaking as you did exactly that and eventually both of you were stripped and laying down in the tub. she was sitting in between your legs, with her back resting on your chest and head leaning back to rest on your shoulder. you traced her body, rubbing into certain patches until her skin was back to its beautiful glow. the warmth of both her and the water was too comforting, and you stayed longer than needed, your fingertips turning raisin-like in protest. despite this, you leaned down to kiss her up and down her neck while you gently massaged her flesh from her thighs to her hips, her stomach to her breasts. if she wasn't so tired that she eventually ran out of steam and stopped talking just to revel in your embrace, you might've handled her a little differently. yet, at this moment the only desire you had was to pamper her.

"ichiyo..." you breathed out slowly, lips grazing her ear while you kissed her again and spread out your fingers over her stomach. "mmmmn... 'missed you... i love you s'much..."

"you were the one who suggested getting something from the café," you retorted with a chuckle, opposite hand brought up to tuck her hair behind her ear that was starting to turn pink from the cold. you rubbed your thumb along her cheek which was going through something similar, then sighed with a cloud of hot breath. "alright, honey we'll head in. i think there's another one on this street, we can just stay there and warm up before we go back, mkay?"

she would feel a bit ashamed about being so demanding if you hadn't pulled her in tighter and looked at her so lovingly. she had such an impossible time never believing she was capable enough at the mafia, and that discomfort disappeared as soon as you whispered sweet nothings into her ear and made her feel like everything was alright.

you turned your bodies together, door jingling as you stepped inside and the air blowing down from the heater hitting you. you realized that she was right, it was too damn cold outside, as soon as you felt the contrast of the inside. you turned towards your lover with a quick look to see if her body was as relieved as yours, but she was staring at something intensely on the horizon, like she'd seen a ghost.

"do you know them?" you whispered, and she jumped a little. part of her wanted to drag you outside, but she couldn't lie to you or keep things no matter how much her common sense told her to.

"that's... they're..." she was struggling to say something, anything, but you noticed she was letting herself get flustered. in these kinds of situations, you liked to interrupt her with a kiss to bring her back to earth from her constantly overreacting mind.

she pulled away before your lips could touch.

she'd never done that before.

you knew better, that this was probably a question of her not wanting the pda right now or maybe it had something to do with the duo standing over there waiting for their drinks, but it hurt nonetheless when you saw her squint her eyes shut and shake her head.

"that's akutagawa," she whispered as an explanation, and you felt simultaneously irritated and relieved, the former due to the fact that it confirmed that she hadn't told her boss that she was in a relationship, much less married. you understood why but it didn't sting any less.

"who's the girl?" you followed up, trying not to think about it too deeply. "is that.. uh... gin?"

she nodded meekly, and it was impossible to stay mad for long when she was so cute. you slid your hand around her waist, turning her around so that her back was to the pair and they wouldn't recognize her while she spoke to you. your voice dropped so low she could barely hear it. "should we get out of here so they don't see us? I'm not that cold, I can wait outside if it makes you more comfortable, honey."

how could she ask you to do something like that when your words were so caring, so honest? she took a deep breath and shook her head once more. in one impossibly fast motion you found yourself on the other end of the shop, standing in front of the man.

"akutagawa-senpai!" ichiyo exclaimed just a bit too loudly for this time of the day and the serenity of the empty café. she bowed her head down, speaking incredibly quickly. "I don't mean to interrupt your evening but it's come to my attention that you don't know that I'm married and this is my wife her name is [_____] and she's wonderful and-"

"'chiyo, he won't be able to understand what you're saying," you laughed softly, cutting her off as you placed your hand on her back reassuringly before addressing her boss with a respectful nod. "it's nice to finally meet you, akutagawa-san. I've heard a lot about you."

he barely bothered to acknowledge you, but the slight twitch in the spot that should've housed his eyebrows signaled that he was shocked. your smile grew wider when you looked to his sister who was sporting the same look. you pulled ichiyo against you from her hip as if to prove that she was indeed yours, and spoke slowly to explain snippets of the current situation. gin listened carefully without a word while the man tried his very best to seem completely uninterested.

as much as you wanted to learn everything there was to know about ichiyo's other side, eventually his drink was ready and he barely excused himself as he walked out. you watched him do so, and gin nodded to you and said something about how nice it was to make your acquaintance in a meek voice before quickly following him out. you waved, and noticed akutagawa watching you do so warmly before burying his face in his coat and scampering off.

"well," you giggled, turning back towards ichiyo, "that wasn't so bad. she's cute and he's an ass, but I trust your judgement in people."

you could practically see stars in her eyes; she rambled to you the entire walk home - during which she didn't complain about the cold a single time and was nearly bouncing off the sidewalk - about how much he clearly loved you based on his expression (apparently the fact that he didn't try to kill you on the spot was a sure sign of his support). she was so excited she even suggested bringing you with her to the port mafia tomorrow, but you stopped her and told her to slow down for just one second. you loved that she was so passionate about her emotions, but you wanted to talk and think this through before you did anything.

for tonight, though, you let her radiate with happiness as she jumped on top of you, making the mattress creak while she climbed up to sit on your lap and curl her fingers around the fabric of your shirt. your hands on her hips, she sat down with her knees bent on either side of you like a frog and leaned so you were chest-to-chest. she tickled your skin to draw out soft giggles while she peppered you with kisses, littering you with her best efforts to repay just a fraction of what you did for her. you rubbed her thighs in long, loving motions and brought her up so she was sitting on your hips instead. you wanted her closer, and she was happy to oblige as she kissed your lips.

"[_____]," she said, smiling into you, "I'm so lucky..."

you cut her off with a press upwards and a firm grip. "shhh, don't say anything. I love you, you love me and that's all we need."

she murmured your name that night in her sleep instead of akutagawa's.

Becoming self-aware

🔫 Grief, sadness, anger... That emotions became quite familiar for Higuchi, after she became self-aware. But, a mix of two emotions were dominant. Anger and envy.

🔫 Higuchi was envious of boss, of Akutagawa-senpai, of Gin, of Chuuya-san... Because, they have past. Even Q and Kajii can remember something from their past. Higuchi didn't have anything. Not a past. Not a reason for joining Port Mafia. Nothing.

🔫 Don't get her wrong, she was loyal to Port Mafia. She wanted to be in Port Mafia. But Higuchi wanted to know WHY she wanted to be in Port Mafia. WHY she wanted to be loyal to Port Mafia?

🔫 Was she just a joke for Readers? Was she just a tool for an author for a comedy means? A crazy fan of Akutagawa-senpai?

🔫 She didn't have answers. Higuchi continue to follow Mori's orders, patrolling the city with Akutagawa. But her mind was far from focusing on patrol.

🔫 Should she leave? Go to ADA, to The Guild, Government, Rats, Hunting Dogs? Should she start hugging everyone, or paint Port Mafia building with pink paint? She wanted to do anything, she decided to do by herself! Something, that was unexpected from her! Something, that not dictated by an author. Higuchi just wanted to be sure. Be sure, that she also can have a free will. Despite not having a past. Despite not having a reason. To knew her reasons.

🔫And then, one day, she felt an entity's gaze on her.

Between patrols, Higuchi wondered why Reader were reading about their lives.

Out of boredom? For their amusement?

Who they were for the Reader? Who Higuchi was for Reader?

A joke... Or they see something in her? Or, they hated her?

Higuchi didn't know.

And she was afraid of knowing.

Higuchi shared her fears with Gin. Gin... spoke in riddles, and, tried to reassure her about Reader. Gin said, that "Higuchi, you might like the truth."

Higuchi still feel scared.

But one day, time reset.

And Higuchi was sitting in the Armed Detective Agency again.

When they start feeling your presence

🔫 Meeting with ADA felt strange... Most of the Detectives looked strangely calm and happy. Especially Former Executive. Higuchi didn't meet him after they realized the truth, and before time reset, but she heard, how. Chuuya-san, Hirotsu-san and Akutagawa-sempai discussed him. His hate towards the Reader. So why...

Dazai grabbed Higuchi's hand, flirting with her.

And Higuchi heard the voice.

"She [||||||||||||] beautiful"

Suddenly, Dazai squeezed her hands.

"You have heard them, right? Precious Guiding Light?"

Higuchi didn't knew, what to say. She was extremely grateful, when Kunikida drag Dazai away.

🔫 Detective followed her. They knew, what is going to happen. But they followed after her. And Higuchi knew, that she herself can't change the outcome.

🔫Next few days were even crazier. Her fellow Mafioso were happy. They start to like Reader. Even Akutagawa-senpai stopped cursing Reader.

🔫And then, ADA and Port Mafia joined forces. To get to the real world. To a person, they called Guiding Light.

🔫 Their current world also changed. Force, that made them repeat their actions, despite knowing, at what it will lead.

🔫 Akutagawa-senpai wasn't injured during the fight with Kyouka and Weretiger.

🔫 Yet, Higuchi, after few "days" passed, went to the warehouse, where kidnappers were keeping him in a “previous” timeline.

In previous timeline, Higuchi said that words in a different place. Right now, she supposed to be on Port Mafia base, saying that words. She choosed to go to the warehouse and said that words. Decided by her own free will.

And then she heard a voice again. This time, it was clear.

Something warm and nice hugged her. Higuchi felt, like she just had the best rest in her entire life.

"Higuchi, I admire you. Your loyalty, your strength. It's okay to be hesitant. It makes you human. All humans are afraid of something. But, only brave ones will do, what is right."

A/n: Hiii thank you so much I'm glad you like my writing! I've actually had a draft for this for a while so I added a few other characters.

Chuuya:

He was extremely loyal and trustworthy in your relationship, the people he interacted with were either just friends or part of a mission

You had been ordered to accompany him to get information from another organization and use it to infiltrate an enemy base of operations

Everything was fine until one of the leaders subordinates came up to him, being super touchy and telling him how he had nothing to worry about since he's so strong

He shrugged her off and just left with the new information

The mission was successful but he could tell something was off, you were much less talkative making it boring

"Cut the crap, what's wrong with you?" He wastes no time getting straight to the point as soon as you get home

You know he won't let up about it so you tell him

He was honestly kind of flattered that you got angry about the situation earlier. It made him feel like you care about him more

He's quick to dismiss your worries though, saying the woman was getting on his nerves too

He apologizes for worrying you by taking you out to dinner❤️

Akutagawa:

In your relationship it was very rare that you felt jealous since he paid few people other than his superiors attention

It wasn’t until you saw Higuchi clinging onto his side, going on about how much she wanted to accompany him on his next mission

Despite his cold manner, he let her hold onto him so you went the other way, trying to get the whole thing off your mind

At home that night you kept your distance and eventually he realized how little you were talking. You had the “person who talks and person who listens” kind of relationship so it was abnormally quiet

He simply asks you if something is wrong however you just smile and claim you're tired

You excuse yourself to your room, leaving him to worry. He couldn't recall anything he did wrong so he starts to worry. Had he been away from home too long? Had he not paid enough attention to you?

He goes up to you again and repeats his question. You can see the stress in his features so you sigh and explain yourself

He's instantly relieved at your response but also somewhat shocked as he didn't see Higuchi's behavior as flirting since she was almost always like that

He says he can tell her to quit acting like that if you want

He also makes sure to try to be even better for you ❤️

Fukuzawa:

He normally worked behind the scenes, doing a bunch of paperwork so it wasn't too often that he interacted with people other than the agency members

He was asked to meet the head of a another organization and the location just so happened to be your café

The place had a special place in your heart since it was where you both spent a lot of time and even where he asked you out

You were responsible for getting lunch for the agency the day of his meeting

As you were bringing the bags back you passed the café and saw him sitting with another woman

From what you could see, they were simply chatting so you just carried on with your day

You didn't say anything but Fukuzawa soon picked up on the fact that something was wrong

When it was just the two of you left in building, he asked you what was bothering you

Something you both prided your relationship on was your communication so you calmly answered his question

He immediately pulls you into an embrace, sincerely apologizing to you and explaining the situation. He tells you he didn't even realize the location he was sent was the café until he went and by then it was too late to do anything

Since he was normally swamped with work your alone time was limited so he takes the next day off so the two of you can spend the whole day together❤️

Ranpo:

You didn't often have to worry about anything with him, there were few people he paid mind to outside of his work

Everything was fine until you two were at his favorite snack store, replenishing his stash

One of the workers came over while he had a bunch of stuff in his hands "I'm surprised you eat all these sweets and are still so fit, do you workout?" she asked while shamelessly checking him out

You were close enough that you could hear and see their conversation and it made your blood boil

You tried to keep your cool however Ranpo saw through you

The woman showed him some snack and he said he didn't like them but his partner might "Y/n, don't these look good? Ah right, you're allergic to peanuts well sorry lady"

He walks to the register and you follow, your face flushed at him openly saying you were dating

You leave after paying and he looks over at you confused "What are you so embarrassed about? You were getting mad, I saw that, and fixed it"

He might not be the most discrete about it but at least he's showing you he's loyal?

If you're still bothered about the situation he might share some of his snacks with you❤️ (key word: some)

Nikolai:

Normally he was very energetic and clingy when it came to you but you didn't mind, in fact you found the behavior cute

Everything in your relationship was going great until he suddenly stopped paying much attention to you

Out of the blue he started coming home much later and also spending an odd amount of time around Fyodor

You were pretty sure there was nothing going on but it was still weird and honestly you were getting kind of jealous that he was getting Nikolai's attention instead of you

As this behavior continued, you grew more worried and were thinking the worst

You were tiredly coming back to your shared apartment with a few bags of groceries in hand

The lights were off so you groaned, trying to hit the light switch without dropping your stuff

Just before you found it, you were greeted by the sound of a party horn

The familiar white-haired man turned on the lights and shouted a "Happy Birthday!"

He nearly scared the life out of you but he was right, it was your birthday. You had been so miserable lately that you didn't realize it

"Quiz time! Have you been worried about my recent absences? Well you shouldn't! I wanted to surprise you but I figured you'd find out so I asked Dos-kun how I should go about it and he said distancing myself from you would throw you off!"

You were honestly too shocked to say anything but he responded by putting a party hat on your head

"Don't just stand there! Go get dressed, I didn't spend all this time planning for nothing!"

While he did worry you in the process, he makes it up by taking you to the restaurant you said you were dying to try, taking you out dancing, and surprising you with a bunch of gifts and the huge cake he made for you❤️

Fyodor:

Most of the people he associates himself with are just parts of his plan so his loyalty to you wasn't often questioned

However, he was spending more and more time working meaning he had less time for you

The majority of the time you were together was at night and when you spoke, the conversation would often return to Dazai

Even though he wasn't around, your boyfriend wouldn't stop talking about him and he was practically ignoring your existence

You knew he talked about him so much because he was likely the largest threat to his plans but you couldn't help but feel jealous eventually

He soon noticed the way your mood shifted when he talked about Dazai and was amused by your reaction

He began talking about him in a much more positive way to see how you'd react, saying how his intellect truly was impressive and he was the hardest force to reckon with so far

His words not only made you jealous but also a bit insecure. "Were you not smart enough for him?"

He noticed that you grew sad over time and actually felt bad, despite his cold nature he wasn't heartless.

Doesn't do anything crazy but apologizes and stops talking about the other man

He also tries to work at home when he can to make up for the lost time❤️

Higuchi:

She was extremely devoted to your relationship, always doing her best to make you feel like the most important person in the world

The only person who made you feel less confident in the strength of your relationship was Akutagawa

He didn't do anything however the way she was always begging to be by his side made you jealous, her efforts were way past a normal work ethic

Eventually she noticed that you had been acting differently lately and asked you what's wrong, however not before panicking about it first

You knew how she tended to overthink things so not wanting to worry her further, you tell her

She takes a deep breath before explaining her relationship with him and how he never recognized her strength

You immediately feel terrible for questioning her loyalty and pull her into a hug

You don't ask her to act any different with him and apologize by spending the rest of the night taking care of and pampering her since she always did that for you❤️
