These investigations and articles are all work from investigative journalism group, Bellingcat. We are excited to see that our friends at Bellingcat, and their Executive Director Christo Grozev, picked up the ICFJ award for Innovation in International Reporting in Washington D.C. earlier this month! Bellingcat’s groundbreaking approach to open-source journalism has uncovered facts around the Syrian Civil War, the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Yemeni Civil War and other major global events. Their unique approach embraces citizen journalism and cutting-edge digital technology, using techniques such as processing large amounts of information and utilizing publicly available data.
“Our real innovation was in inviting our audience to be part of our investigation,” Christo said when picking up the award in DC.
Bellingcat was also recognised by the Society of Editors UK as International Media Organisation of the Year.

“A Thousand Cuts”, a documentary by Filipina-American director Ramona S. Diaz , begins with Rodrigo Duterte’s ascent to power in 2015 and concludes with a June 2020 coda. Under his policy of extra-judicial killing of addicts and low-level dealers, an estimated 20,000 Filipinos have been murdered, with an average of 8 new corpses turning up nightly on the streets of Manila alone. Maria Ressa states, and Diaz depicts, that this has panned out as a war on the poor, as drug lords skate through unpunished.
Most of “A Thousand Cuts” focuses on the erosion of the free press and the concurrent run-up to the 2019 elections.
The moves against Rappler have drawn international concern and made Ressa globally renowned as one of the people standing up against authoritarian governments. Time magazine named Ressa a Person of the Year in 2018, and she was named a laureate in the 2020 Four Freedoms Awards. (READ: Maria Ressa among TIME’s most influential women of the century)

Journalism and the Pandemic Survey
“The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University launched the Journalism and the Pandemic Project in April 2020 to study the impacts on the field worldwide. [T]he first report from the project surfaces alarming obstacles and threats confronting journalism during the first stage of the pandemic.”
“[R]ed flag-raising findings for journalists covering the ongoing crisis:
70% of our respondents rated the psychological and emotional impacts of dealing with the COVID-19 crisis as the most difficult aspect of their work during the period.
30% said that their news organizations had not supplied field reporters with a single piece of protective equipment during the first wave of the pandemic.
17% with knowledge of their organizations' financial losses reported that revenue was down over 75% since the pandemic began; 43% indicated that revenues were down by over half.
81% said they encounter disinformation at least weekly, with more than one-quarter (28%) identifying false information many times a day.
20% said their experience of online harassment was ‘much worse’ during the pandemic.
48% said their sources had expressed fear of retaliation for speaking to journalists during the pandemic.”
“Despite the challenges, journalists indicated that they have some reasons for optimism:
43% said they felt audience trust in their journalism, or that of their news organization, had increased during the first wave of the pandemic.
61% reported that they felt an increased commitment to journalism as a result of the pandemic.”

A equipe do Jornalista Inclusivo agradece a todos pela parceria e participação.
