Hey so i'm $1 drink anon
I'm actually from england and made an assumption based on what it's like here
What the FUCK do you mean you don't have drinks under a dollar in Canada/the US??? What do you even have cents for?
That’s a damn good fucking question honestly
For context, in BC Canada one dollar is what you pay for like. A children’s juice box, in the carton, at a food truck. And a Canadian dollar is only worth like seventy-two cents USAmerican, so that’s still not a bad deal.
We got rid of pennies years ago ‘cause even with zinc cores, the copper was worth more than the coin’s face value. Next up is the nickel (5 cent) dime (10 cent) quarter (25 cent) loonie (1 dollar, called that cause there’s a loon bird on the tails side) and the toonie (2 dollar, portmanteau of two and loonie, has polar bears). And you can pry the toonie from my cold dead hands ‘cause it’s perfect.
Here- and I don’t drink, but from what I’ve seen- an average pint of beer in a restaurant is like. 7 to 8 dollars? Around there. I usually order milk or juice and get nailed for 4.50-6 bucks a pop, but water’s pretty much always free. Usually cheaper to get a coffee. I’ve seen a good cocktail run a buddy 18 bucks if it’s a funky colour.
Also… a quid in the UK is about $1.84 here, so like. You’d still be about a buck 16 short for a litre of Arizona iced tea on special. A dinky bag of crisps at a vending machine here would run you the equivalent of £1.36. The shittiest uninsulated crapbox one-bedroom apartment in town is £1086.68, and they don’t even have AC. And minimum wage JUST hit £9.45. Shit’s fucked

Tumblr media
Each week (or so), we'll highlight the relevant (and sometimes rage-inducing) news adjacent to writing and freedom of expression. This week:
Inkitt’s AI-powered fiction factory
Inkitt started in the mid-2010s as a cozy platform where anyone could share their writing. Fast forward twenty twenty-fuckkkkk, and like most startups, it’s pivoted hard into AI-fueled content production with the soul of an algorithm.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Inkitt preparing human-generated work for an AI-powered flume ride to The Unknown.
Here’s how it works: Inkitt monitors reader engagement with tracking software, then picks popular stories to publish on its premium app, Galatea. From there, stories can get spun into sequels, spinoffs, or adapted for GalateaTV… often with minimal author involvement. Authors get an undisclosed cut of revenue, but for most, it’s a fraction of what they’d earn with a traditional publisher (let alone self-publishing).
“'They prey on new writers who have no idea what they’re doing,' said the writer of one popular Galatea series."
Many, many authors have side-eyed or outright decried the platform as inherently predatory for years, due to nebulous payout promises. And much of the concern centers on contracts that don’t require authors’ consent for editorial changes or AI-generated “additions” to the original text.
Now, Inkitt has gone full DiSrUpTiOn, leaning heavily on generative AI to ghostwrite, edit, generate audiobook narration, and design covers, under the banner of “democratizing storytelling.” (AI? In my democratized storytelling platform? It’s more likely than you think.)
Tumblr media
Pictured: Inkitt’s CEO looking at the most-read stories.
But Inkitt’s CEO doesn’t seem too concerned about what authors think: “His business model doesn’t need them.”
Tumblr media
The company recently raised $37 million, with backers including former CEOs of Sony, Penguin, and HarperCollins, proving once again that publishing loves a disruptor… as long as it disrupts creatives, not capital. And more AI companies are mushrooming up to chase the same vision: “a vision of human-created art becoming the raw material for AI-powered, corporate-owned content-production machines—a scenario in which humans would play an ever-shrinking role.”
(Not to say we predicted this, but…)
Welcome to the creator-industrial complex.
Tumblr media
Publishers to AI: Stop stealing our stuff (please?)
Major publishers—including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Vox Media—have launched a "Support Responsible AI" campaign, urging the U.S. government to regulate AI's use of copyrighted content.
Like last month's campaigns by the Authors Guild and the UK's Society of Authors, there's a website where where you can (and should!) contact your representatives to say, “Hey, maybe stop letting billion-dollar tech giants strip-mine journalism.”
The campaign’s ads carry slogans like “Stop AI Theft” and “AI Steals From You Too” and call for legislation that would force AI companies to pay for the content they train on and clearly label AI-generated content with attribution. This follows lobbying by OpenAI and Google to make it legal to scrape and train on copyrighted material without consent.
The publishers assert they are not explicitly anti-AI, but advocate for a “fair” system that respects intellectual property and supports journalism.
But… awkward, The Washington Post—now owned by Jeff Bezos—has reportedly already struck a deal with OpenAI to license and summarize its content. So, mixed signals.
Still, as the campaign reminds us: “Stealing is un-American.”
(Unless it’s profitable.)

#WarForever
We at Ellipsus love a good meme-turned-megaproject. Back in January, the-app-formerly-known-as-Twitter user @lolt64 tweeted a cryptic line about "the frozen wastes of europa,” the earliest reference to the never-ending war on Jupiter’s icy moon.
A slew of bleak dispatches from weary, doomed soldiers entrenched on Europa’s ice fields snowballed (iceberged?) into a sprawling saga, yes-and-ing with fan art, vignettes, and memes under the hashtag #WarForever.
It’s not quite X’s answer to Goncharov: It turns out WarForever is some flavor of viral marketing for a tabletop RPG zine. But the internet ran with it anyway, with NASA playing the Scorcese of the stars.
Tumblr media
In a digital hellworld increasingly dominated by AI slopification, data harvesting, and “content at scale,” projects like WarForever are a blessed reminder that creativity—actual, human creativity—perseveres.
Even on a frozen moon. Even here.

—Digimon Fields—
Digimon are sorted into "Fields" based on their physiology, habitat or powers. Many Digimon have been associated with more than one Field accross time and different media.
Tumblr media
Fields were first introduced to the franchise through the orignal Pendulum v-pet series starting 1998 and the original Card Game (AKA Hyper Colosseum) in starting 1999. The Pendulums versions 1-5 were Nature Spirits, Deep Savers, Nightmare Soldiers, and Metal Empire, with the addition of Pendulum ZERO, Virus Busters. In Hyper Colosseum, up to Booster 6, the field was initially only indicated by the background, but starting Booster 7 a symbol was added. Later releases eventually opted to use plain text.
Tumblr media
This line of Fields are Nature Spirits [NSp], Deep Savers [DS], Nightmare Soldiers [NSo], Wind Guardians [WG], Metal Empire [ME], Virus Busters [VB], Unknown [UK] and Dark Area [DA]. In 2006, the new Digimon Card Game alpha released, and dropped the Unknown and Dark Area Fields, and added Dragon's Roar [DR] and Jungle Troopers [JT].
Tumblr media
—Nature Spirits [NSp] This field covers many Digimon living in greenery, around lakes or desert areas. They're often considered simple and gentle. Starting the 2006-Savers-era this mostly only contains beast-like Digimon. —Deep Savers [DS] These Digimon live in the Net Ocean of the World. With the 06-era all water based Digimon started being included in this. —Nightmare Soldiers [NSo] Ghost and Demon type Digimon are in this field, as well as Digimon releated to Halloween. Many of them have a relation to darkness, but some are related to super natural themes. —Wind Guardians [WG] This field contains Bird Digimon, and generally Digimon associated with air or sky. Sometimes Vegetation-type Digimon are also included. —Metal Empire [ME] Machine, Cyborg, or Mutant type Digimon belong to this field. Later many "material" based Digimon or Filth Digimon get sorted into this field too. —Virus Busters [VB] Angelic and Holy Beast Digimon are in this Field. —Unknown [UK] This Field would include Mutants or Filth type Digimon. While a lot of modern media spreads these across other Fields, the Digimon Web still acknowledges it. —Dark Area [DA] Evil Digimon, namely Villains from the series, are in this field. —Dragon's Roar [DR] As mentioned above, this Field got introduced in 2006 and includes Dragon and Dinosaur type Digimon previously included in various other Fields. —Jungle Troopers [JT] Just like Dragon's Roar, Jungle Troopers had several Digimon from Nature Spirits and Wind Guardians added to it. It covers Insectoid and Vegetation Digimon.
While most Games don't include Fields, but rather some form of elemental classes based on primary attacks, Digimon World Data Squad does include the Fields as such, and the the DS games have "Species" categories that line up with the Fields: NSp > Beast, DS > Aquan, NSo > Dark, WG > Bird, ME > Machine, VB > Holy, DR > Dragon, JT > Plant/Insect. While the early DS games had one catergory for Insects and Plants, starting with Lost Evolution a Plant species was added.
Tumblr media
What kind of elemental types are included and how they relate to each other varies strongly from game to game, the only constant being Fire. There's also multiple ones that overlap. Water and Ice are often grouped up, Electricity often includes Wind or vice versa. Nature, Earth and Combat often cover the same or similar ground too.
Tumblr media
These elements also don't always refer to the Digimon themselves, but often only attack moves. And in Digimon World 3 and 4, and Survive, the Digimon don't have elemental types associated with them, but instead their resistance to each one.

UK7: Dark Clouds Gather (1985) is the last of the series and, the final product designed by TSR UK (or close to it). It is firmly in the genre of D&D modules that I enjoy reading and would never in a million years decide to run. It’s an in-the-air adventure, which initially might seem unusual, but in execution shares many of the same problems that, for me, make underwater scenarios a pain in the ass.
Still, it’s a fun read. The aarakocra (who have a pretty dope temple) are in conflict with the ba’atun, also known as snow demons, but, come on, look at the cover art: that’s a flying monkey. They’re pretty cool antagonists that use ice-based attacks and swarm tactics to be a pretty effective problem for the players. Kind of surprising that this is maybe the only time they have appeared in an official publication? They kind of remind me a bit of the flying sabreclaws from CM3: Sabre River.
The problem is actually an evil sorceress flying monkey who leads them and who is able to possess other creatures — in this case, a cloud giant. The stakes are epically high (oof, sorry for that pun) and require the retrieval of the sky fish, a magical flying machine shaped like a manta ray which seems like a clear precursor to Spelljammer designs. The bits in the air seem tedious to run, but the stuff with ground in it is pretty good — I like the initial episode in which a local zealot is plucking an imprisoned aarakocra to get it to confess to being a demon, at which point he’ll burn it to death. The intent is for the players to intervene, which man, I hope your players do because that shit is effed.
Brian Williams art throughout. I love his color covers but the interiors seem a bit rushed here. In all, the look of this module lacks a bit of the pizazz I expect from a UK production.

So I need to exchange my driver's license from a UK one to a French one (I'm legally fine to drive on it atm but since it apparently expires in a couple years I figured I should get on that now). I can do that online but I need to send them those little passport photos, either through the post or print ones with a digital code on it I can put on the online form.
Ok, no problem, I think to myself, there's one of those photo booths at the train station 5 mins down the road.
So dragging my partner along for what I thought was going to be a short walk, we go to the station, and I enter the machine, select all my options yadda yadda, 8 fucking euros grumble grumble, I go to pay with my card... nothing. I click around some more, exiting and re-entering the payment screen, trying again---he's dead, Jim.
I don't have cash on me. Neither does he. Great.
Oh well, I know there's one at a supermarket less than 10 mins walk away, let's go there.
We stop by a cash machine on the way since I could probably do with some on me (and in case I have payment problems at that other machine too).
We get there, the curtains are closed and I thought someone was in there at first, but further inspection under the curtains shows a lack of feet, so I enter the booth. The screen is telling me to press the big green button to start, and... no response at all. The hell? It's only after that we both notice the crudely written "Out of Order" sign on the side.
Wonderful.
After buying some iced coffees for the road and a jar of mustard I'll never eat just because it has a picture of a Sprigatito on it, husband suggests we go back to that other machine at the station now that I have cash.
Back at the station, I get my order ready, I go to pay with cash "No Change Given" I don't care just gimme my photos, but oopsie Only €5 notes and coins are accepted, and I'm sitting there like a wally with my €10 bank note. Sigh.
Husband goes to get it exchanged at the service desk. I get given two €5 notes (one of them in the worst state I've ever seen and stuck back together with tape lol, but at least the other one is usable). The service girl comes over and makes conversation, thinking it's weird that the card reader doesn't work, it's brand new.
But whatever. She leaves, and finally, surely now I can get my damn bogos binted.
It doesn't take my note.

idk if i should make this a weekly instalment cause every time, i feel like this is too funny not to share. so, here are the things i googled while writing castles this weekend 😅:
"ragged skin"
Kylian Mbappé
can you have sex while pregnant [i feel the need to state for the record that i know the answer to this, i was just looking for some of those dumb reddit posts where men are like "but surely, my massive penis is too big!" to see how they were phrased 🤣]
[the above didn't yield anything i could use, so:] can my penis reach the cervix?
green desk lamps
london (google maps)
north sea beach england
cozy up to meaning
can you have ice cream when pregnant [i thought so but wanted to be sure cause it occurred to me there's milk in it]
classic ice cream flavours uk
video of newborn baby
peaky blinders quote babies make ["everything okay. babies stop everything." - 4x01, lizzie says it.]
warnings feux voiture en anglais ("hazard lights," you're welcome)
watergate scandal
symptom internal bleeding
british word for stroller [i actually was looking for the word "pram" but "buggy" wasn't yielding anything in my thesaurus so i thought maybe if i asked for this, it would come up (it did)]
average weight baby uk
lbs meaning
gas & air machine labour (google images)
i think i am done with chapter 20. i have shared the draft with some #trustedindividuals to confirm. as i said in my last update, i would like to write (maybe not fully but at least have a good headstart) chapter 21 before posting this one, because i'm not 100% of where i want to split both chapters, so i need to see how long 21 is. but yay, progress!

Bette Bright with Glen Matlock on bass at the Music Machine in London, as captured by Mick Mercer in 1979.
Bette Bright released a series of new wavey-pop/reggae singles, mostly covers of 60’s girl group songs, between '78-'79 with The Illuminations, a backing band that at the time included Henry Priestman, formerly of the Yachts, Rusty Egan, a former member of the Rich Kids and the DJ at the new romantic temple Blitz, along with Glen Matlock, already an ex-Pistol and a former Rich Kid as well.
"This was around the time that Blondie broke big in the UK, so suddenly lots of singles were being released by women who sounded like Debbie Harry for a quick cash-in, but I don’t think that this was the intent with this one. Also around this time... Bette appeared on the cover of Record Mirror. She also toured around this time and was certainly starting to grab an increasing amount of people’s attention, it now only seemed to be a matter of time before she would finally have some chart success. This was followed in November 1981 by the album “Rhythm Breaks The Ice”, also featuring a few original songs, but it wasn’t a hit. By this point, Bette had started to date Graham “Suggs” McPherson, the frontman of Madness, and in 1981 they got married. They have had two children, and almost 40 years later they are still together..." adamnostalgia.wordpress.com/

TEW x CoD au
Implied child abuse/torture
It was part of the way to make sure the captives in Zaragoza remained loyal—to hook them up to an odd machine and slowly strip away their personality until they were a blank slate. Scare them to death until they have to comply. Or let their weakness take them, leave their bodies out back when they cleaned up. It's smart, it works.
But of course every system has flaws.
Simon Riley fought as he was put under. Falling and falling into pitch black until rain dripped on his ice cold skin.
He's never been in a place like this. Not his home in the UK, not any base he stayed at in the US, and certainly not where he got captured in Mexico. It's somewhere scarier. Somewhere that makes him shudder with each creak of the trees around him. Though, he lived in—thrived in—a place with wobbly floorboards and squeaky doors.
Except this place didn't have a pure monster to hold him against the wall as the belt came down on his hip.
Just unwilling participants, their weaknesses determining how they'd interact with this world.
His hands only tremble as the wind forces a shiver down his spine. It's unfamiliar, but not deadly for a trained eye. Riley knows what to look for, can hear before anything approaches.
With no one to protect but himself, he can figure his way through the maze that seemed to be this world tearing itself apart. He's alone here. No Sparks, or Washington, or Tommy. His stomach still flips when something growls in the shadows, but it doesn't matter when his silent steps are undetectable for a beast simply using echolocation.
He doesn't want to kill. Not these men, these people. Forced to become mangled and broken. He can feel something pulling him in the same direction with every hour. Splitting headache, moments of coming to after everything seemed to fade to black, ears ringing so loud he was sure there'd be blood.
Their purpose is to be frightful. Somewhere in him, Simon thinks he understands.

6 Things to Know About NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer
Feb. 26, 2025
The small satellite mission will map the Moon to help scientists better understand where its water is, what form it’s in, how much is there, and how it changes over time.
Launching no earlier than Wednesday, Feb. 26, NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer will help resolve an enduring mystery: Where is the Moon’s water? After sharing a ride on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with Intuitive Machines’ IM-2 launch — part of NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative — the small satellite will take several months to arrive in lunar orbit.
Here are six things to know about the mission.
1. Lunar Trailblazer will produce high-resolution maps of water on the lunar surface.
One of the biggest lunar discoveries in recent decades is that the Moon’s surface has quantities of water, but little about its nature is known. To investigate, Lunar Trailblazer will decipher where the water is, what form it is in, how much is there, and how it changes over time. The small satellite will produce the best-yet maps of water on the lunar surface. Observations gathered during the two-year prime mission will also contribute to the understanding of water cycles on airless bodies throughout the solar system.
2. The small satellite will use two state-of-the-art science instruments.
Key to achieving these goals are the spacecraft’s two science instruments: the High-resolution Volatiles and Minerals Moon Mapper (HVM3) infrared spectrometer and the Lunar Thermal Mapper (LTM) infrared multispectral imager. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California provided the HVM3 instrument, while LTM was built by the University of Oxford and funded by the UK Space Agency.
HVM3 will detect and map the spectral fingerprints, or wavelengths of reflected sunlight, of minerals and the different forms of water on the lunar surface. The LTM instrument will map the minerals and thermal properties of the same landscape. Together they will create a picture of the abundance, location, and form of water while also tracking how its distribution changes over time and temperature.
3. Lunar Trailblazer will take a long and winding road to the Moon.
Weighing only 440 pounds (200 kilograms) and measuring 11.5 feet (3.5 meters) wide with its solar panels fully deployed, Lunar Trailblazer is about the size of a dishwasher and relies on a relatively small propulsion system. To make the spacecraft’s four-to-seven-month trip to the Moon (depending on the launch date) as efficient as possible, the mission’s design and navigation team has planned a looping trajectory that will use the gravity of the Sun, Earth, and Moon to guide Lunar Trailblazer to its final science orbit — a technique called low-energy transfer.
4. The spacecraft will peer into the darkest parts of the Moon’s South Pole.
Lunar Trailblazer’s science orbit positions it to peer into the craters at the Moon’s South Pole using the HVM3 instrument. What makes these craters so intriguing is that they harbor cold traps that may not have seen direct sunlight for billions of years, which means they’re a potential hideout for frozen water. The HVM3 spectrometer is designed to use faint reflected light from the walls of craters to see the floor of even permanently shadowed regions. If Lunar Trailblazer finds significant quantities of ice at the base of the craters, those locations could be pinpointed as a resource for future lunar explorers.
5. Lunar Trailblazer is a high-risk, low-cost mission.
Lunar Trailblazer was a 2019 selection of NASA’s SIMPLEx (Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration), which provides opportunities for low-cost science spacecraft to ride-share with selected primary missions. To maintain a lower overall cost, SIMPLEx missions have a higher risk posture and lighter requirements for oversight and management. This higher risk acceptance allows NASA to enable science missions that could not otherwise be done.
6. Future missions will benefit from Lunar Trailblazer’s data.
Mapping the Moon’s water supports future human and robotic lunar missions. With knowledge from Lunar Trailblazer of where water is located, astronauts could process lunar ice to create water for human use, breathable oxygen, or fuel. And they could conduct science by sampling the ice for later study to determine the water’s origins.
