interstitial cystitis is also sometimes known as bladder pain syndrome or painful bladder syndrome. when someone has interstitial cystitis, their bladder walls are inflamed. the cause is unknown. symptoms include pain in the bladder and pelvis, frequent urination of small amounts, and constant urge to urinate. symptoms tend to resemble a UTI. for some people, symptoms are constant, and for some, they come and go.
