How do you make your little paper turtles? I like the idea and I think my brother's fiance would love them i may also want to make them for myself cuz they're amazing

They're not too difficult! I use a cardstock-type of paper and draw a thing first, and then outline it. My usual go-to has been an 02 Micron, and I use an 01 for line shading here and there. I go over some of the lines again for some weight variation, and then we get rid of my mess of sketch lines!

Then it's time to color~ I use alcohol markers since they blend pretty nicely so you don't get those streaky marks that show where you've colored.

I could've probably done it earlier but I went over the outside lines with a thicker Micron (05) just to give me something of a space for when I trim. Don't know if you can see the difference...

ANYWAY then we cut! Usually I use scissors but a craft knife does make it a lot easier for cleaner cuts, especially around the corners and the blank space in between colored sections when you have them. Whichever method you opt for, I've found it easier to cut in sections, trimming away bit by bit rather than trying to cut all the way around.

Laaaastly is maybe the most important part to really sell the illusion of integrating them into the background of wherever you decide to hang or stick them. It's kind of like when you do digital and 'stroke' the external lines of an image with a transparent background (do people still do that anymore...) so there aren't any white artifacts that show up when they come up over dark backgrounds. Same idea here.

I go over the edges with black. This helps blend your cutout in with wherever it is. You can also touch-up your outer lines if there's any bit of white from when you cut things out. But that's all there is to it!

And now....we stick this boy somewhere.

You could do this digitally too if drawing and coloring it directly on paper isn't your thing. The main step to follow would be the last one with the black edging.

ramble of my scattered thoughts on the piece under cut as usual cuz i love talking 😋

This has been an idea I've been cookin for a while, and it was so cluttered and unlike any other ensemble piece I've made... and I decided I oughta do it anyway. I love Miku, I love Vocaloid, and I wanted to do something really ambitious and crazy for her anniversary. Crazy that she's turning her "canon" age this year TwT

I had the idea floating around since like, May...? And then finally started acting on it around June 18. I'm terrible with deadlines, obvious with how I can never make a silly birthday post in time, so I started wayyyy ahead to make sure I have some room to be lazy lol, especially with an idea as ambitious as this.

This was finished on July 12! So I had to sit on this for an annoying amount of time. Very difficult for someone like me who just wants to talk about everything I'm working on to the masses. But at the very least, that gave me the time to work on the draft for this post.

Here's some ~behind the scenes~ scribbles leading up to the finished piece!

Left is the chicken scratch plan i made in my handy dandy notebook (whenever things are getting real and ambitious, i always made a rough ROUGH plan in there. Usually I'd do a rough pass of the full thing, but this was too complicated for me to do traditionally. I majorly benefited from digital tools to make this possible). CyberDiva and CyberSongman were considered, but I ended up cutting them cuz I just didn't feel like drawing them sorry-- (just pretend they're off to the side. They gave Ruby and Clara the pizza lol). Right is the "final" completed sketch (before I decided to include Chika mid-way through coloring and VY1 and VY2 near the finish line). I started by drawing the main "groups" separated on a different canvas so I can plop them into the main canvas for easy rearranging and transforming. However I got lazy and ended up drawing everyone in the bottom right corner directly on the canvas since I liked seeing the big picture of everyone's positions. Y'know.

Almost excluded Chika! But I like her design so much that I just felt like including her last-minute. You win this time, Chika fans. VY1 and VY2 were very close to being cut! I added them when I began doing the banner and thought "eh why not". I figured their non-human designs would be pretty easy to include pushed back in the bg. Ik VY1 is more commonly associated with the fan design, but I referenced the hairpin cuz it was simpler and the fan looked very annoying to draw 😭

Sorry to the fans of many Vocaloids I had to cut because this composition was insane enough as is. I promise I wanted to include fellas like CUL, LUMi and Sachiko 😭 I will admit I was a little biased on who I wanted to include over others. Like, I don't normally care for Bruno and Clara, but I wanted to get some more international 'loids in the mix. Also wanted to stick in the realm of official designs and not fan-designs since, as much as I can appreciate those, are just a whole "wait who is that guy supposed to be" situation I didn't wanna deal with. I also did wanna include even more character references through the balloons, but they ended up being kind of ugly and overcomplicated the BG :,) (Oh, and while this was originally planned to be a Vocaloid-only piece, I did end up including Teto, Neru, and Haku 'cuz those are Miku's besties dude!!! They may not be Officially in the club but they're her girls and it would be criminal to not invite them to her birthday).

Anyway, this project marks the first time I've drawn a lot of Vocaloids. Lily, Piko, Rana, Yuki, Yukari, Miki, Maika, and many more lol. All of 'em I've heard or seen in passing, but now I actually drew them, and some have really cool and fun designs!! I got into a habit of drawing Merli after this since I just love her design for example. And I'll probably be drawing more lol!!

Oh and the last thing I'll add for now!! The cake is indeed made up of various song references!! I wanted to reference the "big four" producers, just absolute icons in Vocaloid history. The pink/black checkerboard is "World is Mine" (Ryo), the crescents on the side is "Rolling Girl" (Wowaka), the smiley faces is "Matryoshka" (Hachi), and the three hearts on the side is "The Vampire" (DECO*27, which is sort of a symbol of his whole Mannequin album tbh). I know "The Vampire" is a bit modern but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head. I'm a fake DECO fan I know 😔 "Matryoshka" was originally going to be referenced in the colors of the candles but believe me it looked like shit so I just went for something else last minute 😭

Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader

Summary: Some things are not self explanatory, and Steve has decided he's going to fill in the gaps by coming to you to ask his questions about sex and some of those questions have more involved answers than you'd expect

The knock on your bedroom door barely pulls your attention away from the sketch you're working on in your bed, however, after a couple of minutes the persistence of it interrupts your focus enough that you finish up the line you're doing and put the drawing pad down with a sigh. You pause the show that was really just filling the silence while you worked and force yourself up to answer the door. Steve is standing on the other side of it, as stiff as ever.

"Hey Steve what's up?"

"You're a smart woman." He says.

"Thank you?" You frown unsure where he's going with this.

"I have some questions I'd like answers to and you're the only person here I trust to answer them truthfully without making me feel embarrassed about it." He explained.

"Usually when people have questions that they're embarrassed to ask, they just take them to Google. The search engine I've taught you to use several times."

"Oh I've tried Google but the answers I get from there are-" Steve trails off and clears his throat, avoiding your questioning gaze.

"Are these questions you need answered now or in the near future? Are there a lot of them? Did you make a list? What are we talking about here exactly?" You quirk an eyebrow up at him.

"I wrote a few down, but I'm sure some of the answers will lead to more questions."

"Alright, come on in. My knowledge is at your disposal." You step out of the doorway so Steve can walk into your room. He takes a seat in the armchair off to the side and flips open his notepad. You had been joking about him making a list but you shouldn't be surprised he did, this is Steve after all.

"Okay I'm not sure where to begin." He frowns at his list.

"Just start at the top babes, whatever you wrote down first." You shrug.

"Right, yes. What is- cockwarming?" He blinks at you. Your eyes widen in surprise. If you'd been drinking something you'd have spit it out.

"Jesus Christ Steve." You chuckle. He blushes when you call him handsome you'd never have guessed those words would come out of his mouth.

"Sorry, I should've warned you it was rather... vulgar." Steve frowns.

"I'm far from chaste Steve, I'm just- I can't believe you even know that word." You say.

"I read it somewhere and I didn't want to Google it because the couple of times I have Googled something like this the results were, undigestible. But you know a lot about sex so I figure-"

"Well hang I know a decent amount about sex, but that applies to a lot of things, it's not limited to sex I'm not the Kama Sutra." You cut him off.

"The what?" He asks.

"Kama Sutra- it's a book about sex and sensuality and what not."

"Oh okay." Steve takes a moment to scribble it down on a different page in his notepad. "Sorry okay so can you answer my question about the other thing or do you not know."

"Cockwarming? Yeah I know what it is." You shrug.

"Well?"

"It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Warming a dick. You stick it in a hole, but you're not supposed to move, you just- chill out."

"Stick it in a hole?" Steve blinks at you. Perhaps you could've done better than that but you've had to never explain sex things in a non-sexual relationship.

"Yeah. It could be your dick in a vagina, I'm sure queer couples do it also so it could be your dick in an asshole. Or a strap-on if it's about the... control of it all. Somebody's probably also tried it as an oral fixation thing but I can't imagine that would be nearly as pleasant." Your brows pull together as you consider the option.

"Oral fixation?" Steve asks.

"What thing?"

"Anything. Varies from person to person really. Sometimes a dick, sometimes fingers, sometimes gags, the list goes on." You shrug. Steve jots down things as you talk, there's something a little endearing about his notetaking.

"Why not?"

"I want to establish safe words. They're used like- referee cards during a sports game, kind of. I usually use a stoplight system. Green means keep going, yellow means slow down or proceed with caution, red means stop and whatever is happening would come to a complete halt. Of course we don't have to use the stoplight you can simply pick a word that works for you. Something easy to remember that won't get easily confused."

"Why wouldn't you just say stop?"

"Well- we can!  It's just that for some sexual activities saying stop may not be ideal." You say.

"What?"

"Sometimes saying stop is part of the sexual situation so you say it but you don't mean it so it's not really an effective way to indicate that you actually want something to stop. Like impact stuff, spankings and what not, sometimes you'll shout no or stop instinctively but you're not actually trying to ask them to stop, you're enjoying it. So you pick another word to mean stop. Plus there's consensual non-consent-"

"That's an oxymoron." He cuts you off.

"Yes I know but they call it that because all the risk is manufactured, predetermined, discussed and agreed upon in advance. It's all the thrill without any of the actual danger. That's a lesson for a different day. You can write it down if you want to come back to it."

"I like the stoplight. It's simple and self explanatory."

"Great, you can use it at any time to indicate how you're doing. If something is uncomfortable, say so. This isn't some sort of interrogation training, you are not obligated to endure anything and since this is about you learning don't hesitate to communicate with me if you realize something's not working or you have a question. Did all of that make sense?"

"Perfectly." He nods.

"Great. Any questions?" You ask.

"Just a general one- will we need a schedule for this?"

"For when you're allowed to come to me with sexual questions?"

"Well- since sometimes it'll involve more than a verbal explanation, should we have a plan for when it's a good time for you?"

"Nah it's fine. Our schedules aren't consistent enough for that really. Just ask whenever you have one and if it becomes a bigger thing that needs a more in depth explanation we can figure it out." You shrug.

"Well if that works for you, I'm okay with it."

"Very well, we'll start with your first question as today's lesson. Cockwarming. I've already told you what it is but you don't seem to understand why anyone would do it. It's mostly an intimacy thing. For those that do it there's something about the closeness that appeals to them."

"Well... I guess, but you offered to-"

"I know, you're more on the reserved side and I want you to know your comfort is a priority, but I'm just saying some of your questions might be hard to answer kinesthetically if I can't look at you."

"Yeah, I suppose that makes sense. We'll get there. It might take me a while though." He says.

"That's fine Stevie, I'm just the tutor. We move at your pace." You shrug.

"Do I- this may be a silly question, but do I need to fully undress for this?"

"You can keep your top on if you'd like, but your pants and underwear have to come off."

"Okay then- I'm ready." He says. You turn around and Steve stands awkwardly and pantless in your room.

"Have a seat at the desk please." You nod your head towards your desk chair as you shimmy off your own shorts and panties. You can feel Steve's eyes on you as he moves to the seat you directed him to and you have to fight to suppress the smile pulling at your mouth. "Alright, it's pretty straightforward, I'm just going to sit in your lap."

"Wait do- we need to prepare at all for this? Are you sure you're ready?" He asks.

"Normally you'd be right but honestly I'm pretty good already. Trust me, we can skip that step this time around." You chuckle. That's as much as you're willing to tell him, whether he figures out what you mean or not is his business.

"Okay." His brow furrows a bit.

"Do you want to hold your dick for this or is it okay for me to do it?" You ask as you walk over to him.

"Oh- uh you can do it." Steve says his cheeks tinging the slightest shade of pink.

"Okay." You wrap your fingers around his dick and shuffle over his lap, hovering above him as you line him up with your entrance. He's hot and heavy in your hand as you gently rock your hips to help your body take him in. You're incredibly wet which helps but with how thick he is it takes a moment to settle fully onto his lap. "I'm a pretty strong swimmer." He says and you laugh.

"You say that now." You hum.

"I feel like you have no faith in me."

"That's not it. I'm assessing. Thirty minutes ago I wouldn't have believed you'd be having an open conversation about sex with anyone��in this tower, let alone me."

"You've got a lot to learn."

"So do you." You smirk, stroking his cheek. Honestly you think you could sit here talking to Steve like this for the rest of the day, as distracting as it is to have him inside you this way and not move, you're far more experienced in this than Steve, and the dull ache is easy to deal with when you're having silly conversations.

I've been making window clingies of the elemental gems from Minish Cap and Four Swords (plus rainbows because pride month) and I thought I'd put together a tutorial :)

Materials needed:

Permanent markers

Clear cellophane wrap

Scisors

Paper to sketch or print your design on

Not strictly necessary but useful:

Tape (for holding your pattern in place)

Something with a straight edge, like a ruler or bone folder (for smoothing out the plastic)

Step one:

Decide on a design. I drew mine digitally and printed it out. The printer had an issue, but eh, I can still see the lines, it's good enough ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Step two:

Fold a sheet of cellophane wrap in half to make a double-layered sheet that is a little bigger than your intended design. Try your best not to get it too crumply and wrinkled, but in my experience a little bit of crinkling is unavoidable. Best not to get too perfectionist about it, and just embrace it as part of the stained-glass look!

Unfortunately, cellophane being clear, this step is hard to photograph ^^;;

Step three:

Lay the double-sided cellophane sheet over the top of your design. The best way I found to keep everything in place was to tape the pattern to a smooth surface and stick the plastic down around it.

Starting with the lightest colors first to avoid color bleed, start coloring your design, leaving the lineart for last.

Step four:

At this point, the colors might look nice and vibrant against the white paper, but when you pick the plastic up and hold it up to the light, it will likely look washed-out and/or streaky.

To build up the colors more, fold another layer of cellophane and place it on top of the inked side of your current sheet. Then go over the colors and lines again, once again in order from lightest to darkest.

Keep adding layers until you're satisfied with the darkness of the colors. You can even get some interesting effects and shading by combining layers of different colors!

Step five:

When you're done, add one final layer of cellophane to the top to protect the inks. If you have a ruler or bone folder, I recommend using it now to smooth out the plastic and press the layers together as much as possible.

Then just trim around the edges and slap it on your window! :D

stage/fright spoilers for 3rd april matinee

first of all this is what my dad decided to send me on the train

what a choice.

anyway, absolutely delightful show as ever

still mourning the loss of len’s little leg movement at the start of his mime. bring it back, steve!

at the start of the kidnappers sketch reece decided the best way to check the scene/set the stage was to leap from side to side like a crab on a pogo stick. so at that point i thought: oh he's going to lose his mind later.

today's hostage was MY EDGE JUMP - miles jupp! (now i've finally got the right last word) you know, the guy from the thick of shit / the thick old git / whatever the other one was

he played it in the standard but very funny way the scene always goes. his "I love you, you love me" song went on to something like "if we invite the neighbour, that makes three" and very much continued on that theme, which took the lads by surprise in the best way. I don't know if the trumpet deliberately doesn't work anymore (because it defintiely used to, but i'm sure i've seen someone else say it didn't) but he tried his best and no noise came out of it. i'm guessing it is supposed to work because reece had to hold his moustache in place as he laughed.

speaking of reece, i'm sure he did something funny when he made his exit but i cannot remember now because it's been pushed out of my mind by my absolute favourite thing ever:

the celery line. (I already made a separate post but it's going here too.) steve, clearly seeing reece was going to break whatever he did, chose to go completely over the top with this. he slid towards the front of the stage on his knees, threw his arms in the air and screamed "IT'S ONLY A STICK OF CELERY!!!!!" and reece was gone. just had to clap his hand over his mouth and turn to the back of the stage for ages. when he looked back, steve still had his arms in the air and he shook them in anguish which made reece laugh even more. god it was joyous. i wish i could watch that bit again. he was still half laughing when he had to deliver the lines about len being a liability.

when miles jumped out of the wardrobe after len got the name wrong again (this is the one i've forgotten) he did the classic rant and said the thick of it was a seminal piece of television that never did a stage show because it was too dignified (both steve and reece laughed at this). and miles's exceptional parting line: "you two couldn’t organise a blow job in a cock factory." they were both a bit like "I can't believe that's where you went..."

does len always say "I just want you back by my side"? i always remember it without the back but he really stessed it here, poor guy. he just wants tommy back

bit of a malfunction of the brown bottles wall. tommy dropped down, we got the sound effect for the legs and the spotlights but no legs. until tommy got up again and out they came for the rest of the sketch!

oh tommy. his voice when he opened len's letter cracked so much and the "thank you old pal" was barely audible he was so emotional.

weird moment when tommy turned off the lights and some of the audience started applauding because they thought that was the interval. got a big fright to come yet!

we had a technical issue during the interval so that gave us an extra few minutes. the safety curtain eventually raised and we were sat in the silence so long everyone started nervously giggling but we all knew they were going to make us jump again. the people around me were very jumpy/screamy.

i love anna as mrs cragg (and maggie). she's so good. as is miranda as suzette/sherrie. love them.

i'm sure there was something particularly weird reece did as hugo (of course...) but i cannot for the life of me remember what it was. if i ever do, i'll slot it in here. just generally completely off the wall, hilarious and clearly enjoying himself. always great fun to watch.

I don't know if this was always in the line and i just missed it in the laughter, but i noticed after steve says "you can't walk down shaftesbury avenue without meeting some cunt with a camera" there's also a bit about constantly being filmed at stage doors. it's nice to see people enjoy their time at the stage door but i do hope people don't feel the need film every little interaction. or if you do, it doesn't have to go online for it to have happened.

bonus of rewatches: when steve freezes because he's seen reece you really can tell that he's obviously missed his cue. they give him a quick look and then anna covers for him, bless her. and i noticed when he hugs reece, miranda looks over at bhav with a sad/worried expression aw. quite a few confused giggles over that hug and steve trying to keep close to him. he did a lot of sniffling here too. poor steve, as ever.

i always love the bit with the cameras because there's such a great atmosphere in the audience. genuine fear all around you, always people whimpering like "nononono. what's going to happen?" i love it.

everything else is the same from what i could see. fantastic show. during the fake curtain my friend just turned to me like "I hate them." :) also a detail i've always loved about this part is that my friend and i once sat through four hours of a show before we realised we'd been watching an understudy for the whole thing. so, you know, finding out at the end that reece was never in it is not as far fetched as it sounds! in our defence, we were very high up.

lots of awws for steve when he was talking about reece, calling him his best friend and saying how much he misses him. they also got a lot of awws in the afterlife scene, again when they said they missed each other and when steve said he couldn’t do the song without reece ❤️ surprisingly not at the "maybe every ghost story is really (long pause) just a love story." they were very sweet in that bit anyway, I enjoyed it. little coffee raise, little look. lovely.

Life updates:

I'm still unemployed, on the road to mental health recovery, housed by generous friends, and every dollar helps towards me being able to get back to my previous capacity to draw purely for fun like I used to and share it for free here on tumblr. I'm sorry that I am put in this position where I have to put my art behind a paywall like this, but so far it's been my only way to survive.

Still, whenever possible, I will keep posting as much free content on here as I can. Thanks to Patreon supporters and a generous loan from the convention organizer, I was able to table again this year. There is nothing I draw or write that I am not sharing either on tumblr or Patreon.

I've tried and failed to keep a day job to sustain me and save up for the marriage visa to move in with my husband. But on a lighter note, thanks to your patronage, I was able to seek mental healthcare, which made me realize the extent of my own abilities. So I've decided to give up on the day job project, as the process of leading a normal life will be a life long challenge for me. and instead put all my energy into Patreon, comic pitches, and conventions to move in with my husband as soon as possible. I have faith that once I live in a place I can call my own, with a partner that is keeping me strong by my side, it will be easier to create again.

! Pride Month Challenge 2024 !

Well hi there, everyone! With May winding down to a close and June just around the corner, it's about that time again...the time where @jadedsunshine, @unicornaffair, and I host our yearly create-a-thon! 🥳

What's the Pride Month Challenge, you might find yourself asking? Well, this year it's a little bingo game we've put together, featuring some classic tropes. The aim of this particular game? I don't write fic - can I still participate?

Ab. So. Lutely!!! We've done this challenge for a few years now (we've missed a year or two for weddings and other life stuff, whoops!), but in the past we've had people doodle, sketch, draw, make edits, create props or other physical art, and even curate playlists! The three of us are writers, so you're very likely to see fic or ficlets from us...but you? Oh. Oh, you can do whatever your heart desires!!!

Are there word limits/expectations for a finished product?

NO!!! :D Zero. Literally zero expectations. We aren't putting together an exchange, we aren't holding a competition, we're just trying to get the spirit of creation in the air. That's it! So whether you're writing 50 words or 5,000, whether you've made a rough sketch on a notebook page or fully lined/colored a scene, you're good! You're so good. As long as you've made something, you've earned a stamp on that bingo card, baby!!!

What if I don't want to do something fandom-y? Can it be OCs/original work?

OF COURSE!!! 100%. You don't even have to ask!!! Show the world your OCs! Tell the world about your story's worldbuilding! It's all fair game :)

What if I don't want to post what I made?

Don't sweat it! Again, this is...the farthest thing from official. This is for fun, and this is for the sake of making something. Sharing your work can be nerve-wracking - don't feel like you have to! We'd love to see you playing along with us, of course, but as long as you've made something that you're proud of, you've earned that stamp! No ifs, ands, or buts!

Is it cool if my creations aren't necessarily pride-themed?

Totally! We host this challenge during pride month because (1) it traditionally works better for the three of us than NaNoWriMo because of our schedules, and (2) we're queer creators ourselves! But if you're feeling a prompt and can't find a way to make it relevant to pride, PLEASE don't sweat it! As I've been known to say (and then get laughed at for saying), this challenge is no rules, just right, Outback Steakhouse :P

Some art-advice asks I've been meaning to reply to!

I use Clip Studio Paint Pro, though I'm not sure what tips I could give just in general. Just experiment with new things often, draw as much as your lifestyle allows, watch how other people do their work but try to avoid "Dont do THIS thing ever" type lessons and tutorials. Use as much reference as you'd like and take your time! To this day a simple sketch can still take me several hours to do depending on what it is.

Thank you so much!!! I didn't do any kind of formal art schooling but I've always been inclined towards arts and crafts, and started taking drawing semi seriously when I was about 17 (I'm 27 now). I draw a lot of inspiration from western comics and my favorite artists are jason shawn alexander and sean murphy.

Oh I'm so flattered to hear my stuff's inspired you to take up drawing again, I have a bunch of little crafty hobbies but art is by far the most fulfilling one to me - largely because you're constantly learning and improving.

You're definitely onto something already, I am constantly looking at other people's art (even If it isn't a style I would want to emulate) and analyzing how the pieces come together to create the final product. In my opinion this is pretty much the best way you can go about learning besides real-life reference drawing. You can even take something into your software of choice/print it out and trace it (just to yourself, of course) to get a sense of hand-motion and line use.

As a beginner I think there's no shame at all in taking heavy inspiration from your favorite artists, as long as you aren't straight up copying things and calling them your own. Your personal style Is likely to come out naturally, with time. That's very much how I started myself!

Also, just be patient with yourself, try to have realistic goals for your skill level while simultaneously being proud of everything you do. Even if you absolutely despise a drawing, you still drew something! And even if it doesn't feel that way you most definitely learned from it. Use learning tools and tutorials to whatever point you feel comfortable with but don't get stuck on people's arbitrary rules - unless we're talking about something tangible like real-life application of traditional art tools, things like anatomy, perspective and light are to be referenced from - but It's not the goal to emulate them 100% unless you ARE going for hyperrealism. As someone who uses a ton of reference these days, I can tell you first-hand that I often find myself straying from it on purpose to make a piece look more interesting.

Lastly, draw things you enjoy! Don't let anyone else dictate what you SHOULD be doing and don't fall into the trappings of wanting to stick to one specific style, process, or subject matter.

LOL thank you so much for your very evocative compliments! I haven't ever done a timelapse, not that I remember at least. I'm not sure how they work but I do so much of "I'm gonna try this thing 5 different ways and then decide what I like" that I'm not sure how comprehensive that would be LOL

I could put together a process showcase or something though, I feel like that might be better even, since I get to explain a little of what I'm doing through text and display how I use reference. Something to consider!

Hi there! Your art is amazing and I'm in love your style! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your inspirations/resources you used when you were learning art? Even if you can't your stuff is great nonetheless, keep it up!

Thank you!! I'm always getting my biggest art inspirations from video games. Like in elementary I'd always trace official Pokemon art, that was one of the first artstyles I remember wanting to emulate.

Pokemon is Still one of my biggest inspirations, but also games like Ghost Trick and The World Ends With You, with their strong shapes and bold lineart; Psychonauts' artstyle is always in the back of my mind, very iconic; The Mario & Luigi RPG games were another very early influence.......

Other than video games, there's also painters/illustrators like Joe Demers and Mac Connor that I really enjoy, and Robert E. McGinnis, and Jean-Pierre Gibrat, and Kurt Ard......

Not even counting the thousands of artists on Twitter and Tumblr that've influenced my art in so many different ways. Like, I kept finding artists who use very thick lineart in their art, so one day I decided "let's try that. I hate lineart, but let's try that thick lineart." And then it just stuck, now it's alllll I've been doing

My biggest piece of art advice is to Literally Always Be Experimenting, analyzing/cherrypicking parts of art you enjoy, and trying to replicate those parts in your own art with your own flair, even if they don't end up sticking. Not only because it gets you to constantly try new methods and techniques, but because it's the most fun way to go about art, at least for me. Consistency be damned.

As for additional tips/resources I used when starting out (other than just Looking At As Much Art As Possible, and Constantly Drawing All My Favorite Video Game Characters), sites for timed gesture studies are always good.

Adorkastock.com has a bunch of pose references, plus a "sketch" tab up top with timed gestures. Quickposes.com, Line-Of-Action.com, and sketchdaily.net also let you do timed gestures, some with sections for animal/environment/still-life studies too.

Also, stockpile your favorite pieces of art, your biggest inspirations, put them all in a folder on your desktop. Organize them if you wanna. This will be your inspiration folder, gotta have an inspiration folder.

Naoki Urasawa

I read Naoki Urasawa's "Monster" and haven't been the same artistically since. I'm so thoroughly obsessed with the way he draws faces, especially noses. The way he draws wrinkles and bodyfat too, every single character looks so unique from one another, it's outstanding.

I used to be very self-conscious about the way I draw eyes; AKA, I hated how "simple" they were. The way Naoki draws them though, how he manages to make them so expressive, I love it, I gotta channel that, I GOTTA learn to emulate these faces

Tatsuyuki Tanaka

Fantastic expressive faces yet again, but also the way he draws bodies, arms, legs, clothing folds, poses, it's so insanely masterful.

With Naoki's art, I focus on the faces as a point of interest, but with Tatsuyuki's, everything about his art is so good I can't pinpoint just one thing about it that I love. OH and the backgrounds he draws, all the robots and machinery, shit's Gorgeous

Heather Campbell / Literally All The Artists Involved With The Team Fortress 2 Comics

I <3 TF2 COMICS these comics are the reason why I shifted away from drawing the same anime boys over and over in middle school, and instead started to learn how to draw muscles, and fat, and old people, semi-realism, cartoonism; VERY crucial part in my art journey.

Getting to see the art develop over the course of the mainline comics is awesome. The sketchier art from the older issues, compared to the cleaner art in the newest, I love both eras so much.

I'm running out of time, pretend I put Ryoko Kui down here too. OH honorable mention to Pop'n Music's art too. Aaaand also Guilty Gear.

I saw your reblog about asks and then you gave me an ask and I realised I've never asked you anything before so I sprinted over here to reciprocate the favour (and now I'm a little out of breath because my cardio is shocking!).

So... my main problem as an artist is having a thousand ideas popping into my head but not being able to put even a fraction of them on paper - if you have the same problem, would you like to share any of those ideas??

this is a really interesting question!

I struggle with the exact same problem tbh, it's always really hard wrangling so many ideas! I wish I had some like groundbreaking tips to help manage this but my methods are pretty basic:

-as ideas come, i try to write them down (i usually fail at this) but if it's a good idea it will stick in my mind for days or even weeks, so when i get the chance i will sketch something out. it usually turns out really bad but that's ok bc it's just to get the barest essence of the idea, and i'll write down the actual idea down on the paper or canvas of whatever i'm working on so i can decipher that later. (i like to have a good bunch of these drafts ready at any given time so i can pick and choose what to work on next once i complete something)

-this one might not apply to everyone, but: i cycle between a few different art styles. sometimes it depends on what brushes i use, or if i know i want something to be a casual sketch, a whole sketchpage, or an illustration. it also depends on knowing how much time i want to spend on it. faster drawings done with my favorite chunky pen in a more cartoonish style usually rank higher in order of what to work on, because i know i can finish it in a few days (or even hours). stuff that's more detailed/rendered is lower on the list of execution because i know it'll take longer to finish because of details and the linework, and that i'll definitely want to take breaks from that one to work on the faster ones. (i have two pieces for Bad Blood i've been working on for MONTHS now bc they have so much detail and i still don't know when they'll be done lol, just chipping away at them bit by bit)

-sometimes, depending on what art projects i'm currently working on, i won't get a chance to actually develop that new idea until much later on. or maybe i try and just don't feel into it anymore. in that case i try to just focus on something else. i usually have about four or more other art ideas in various stages of completion to work on in rotation which has really helped. and then some days i really don't feel like working on one particular thing and want to work on another, but i compromise with myself that if i get decent progress done on one then i'll switch to the other after a point. just as a little treat :3

i also think a large part of managing all these ideas is accepting that some of them will just never be made. every now and then i go through my procreate files and delete drafts that i know i'll never actually draw. either because i don't love the idea anymore, have no time, i don't think i can execute it well, or just pure laziness.

it kind of sucks but it's just the way things go, and the ideas keep coming anyway so it's not like that's the end of the line if you decide to toss a few out the window! (ESPECIALLY considering we draw a lot of wwe based art and since it's a weekly show there's just so much more potential for new art every few days.) it's great to be able to get anything out at all tbh! i do feel a lot of pressure sometimes that i have to get things out as fast as possible but it does work as a great motivator and i'm just always so excited to see what everyone else is working on and posting! it's a very inspiring environment.

Doodle Dump: Misc. Edition

Time for misc. doodles~

1: "Ikigusare Idols". Like many people, "Injection Girl" randomly appeared in my Youtube feed, and I was admittedly charmed by them. It's like they're from a bygone era, but they just put out another music video last month. Currently, my favorite song is "スーパーZ指定ガール". (Content warning for mass violence in the lyrics.)

2-4: "Clown Doll Redesign". So, since I've started doll customizing as a hobby, I tend to lurk on the Dolls and CustomDolls subreddits on the lookout for inspo and info. Not too long ago, someone posted asking for advice/critique on their doll ideas. So I sketched these (and some notes on the original design, which are not included here) as a response. In the end, I never did reply because I don't actually have a reddit account, and I thought it would be weird to make one solely to criticize someone, so I'm just posting them here.

My main critiques were that there wasn't a lot of contrast in their color choices and that the blue and red hair seemed random when the rest of the design was pink/green. So, my main goal was to increase the contrast between the pink and green, so the different patterns would stick out more and to unify the pallet a bit more. The skintones differ from the reference because the doll they said they were going to use was a G3 Frankie Stein, who has bluish skin and a prosthetic left leg, so I'm not really sure why their sketch uses the original green skin or why the silver leg is on the wrong side, but it is what it is.

The first 2 are straight pallet swaps, but the 3rd is based on a second design that the OP made. They originally asked for users to pick between the two. Most people said they preferred the blue and yellow design because it was more cohesive, but the OP replied that they really wanted to make the pink and green one work somehow, so that's why I focused on using that one as the base, but I still included a version with the alternate pallet and patterns.

5-8: "Music Junkie Soundwave". In a similar vein, there was another user on the subreddit that wanted opinions on a potential Transformers fashion doll line, citing a video that one of their friends made on the idea.

Now despite having a limited knowledge of Transformers, and I'm still pretty green to the fashion doll world, I wrote a whole-ass dissertation on the idea because magical girl/boy robot dolls are totally something I'd be into.

But, for a similar reason to the clown doll, I didn't want to make a reddit account just to critique someone (though I still have the original response in my drafts).

When I finished writing that response, I decided to sketch how I would go about the idea as it'd been proposed, and created this Soundwave doll idea. Admittedly, he's very inspired by Giacomo from Pokemon Scarlet/Violet (never played it, but I do like some of the character designs in it). I dunno if the overalls are a little dorky, but I couldn't think of another way to represent his chest-deck in a meaningful way.

9-10: "Kingsley and Mamuta". I tried to make some human? designs for them, but it's not going great. I really wanted Mamuta to still be monstrous, but designs like that aren't my strong-suit... Kingsley I'm just not satisfied with yet.

11: "OC Line-Up". Just a few OCs of mine. From left to right: Carol, The Prince Formerly Known As Frog, Shapeshifter, and Fizz.

12: "Rival". An idea for a rival to Kun3h0, ala Shadow the Hedgehog and Wario. I made another sketch recently that goes in a very different direction, but I kinda want to finish that so I haven't included it in this dump.

So... over the last week or three, I've been tagged *checks notes* NINE (9) times in various wip posts, and I responded to *checks notes unnecessarily* NONE (0) of them. 🤦🏻‍♀️I am so sorry to everyone who tagged me for not responding sooner, I very much appreciate the tags and the interest/support. My brain has been down the drain for a while, so I've not really had anything worth sharing. BUT! I'm fixing that right here, right now, because better one to three weeks late than never, right?

1- @something-tofightfor tagged me after sharing an upcoming part of Fool's Gold (which I have been LUCKY enough to read a few parts ahead on, and let me tell you guys, we're all in for a TREAT with this story), specifically looking for Jack or Marcus snippets. So let's go with the cowboy, shall we?

“I read you, Jack.” You waited a beat, heart slamming at your ribcage as you stared at the back of his seat in front of you. “Everything alright?” Well that’s a dumb question that I already know the answer to.  He let out a small humorless laugh that sounded far too flat to come from the man you knew. “Oh, just peachy.” You winced, closing your eyes and focusing on his voice. “Listen, I know Champ and Ginger want you to stick with me on this one. But I…” He swore under his breath. “I need you to stay with the Pony when we land. Can you promise me that?”  What? Your eyes flew open, brow creased with confusion. “That’s not…” You shook your head even though you knew he couldn’t see you. “Jack, that would be a violation of a direct order. I can’t-”  

2- @djarins-cyare tagged me in a sneak peek of a Din story she's working on, so I figured I'd reciprocate with some tin can man of my own.

You gasped as you stepped out from the cavern, mouth dropping open and eyes going wide as you took in the sight of the open sky, illuminated by Concordia’s silvery green glow, for the first time in your life. It’s real. You took another step, chin tilted upwards as you spun in a slow circle. A tear rolled down your cheek and slipped over your lip, your tongue flicking out to lick it away. It’s… “Beautiful,” you whispered. 

3- @oonajaeadira tagged me when she shared a snippet of Leave Off Your Wandering, which I cannot wait to catch up with because I adore that story so so much. The next thing I have cooking in my own Joel story is actually an Ellie interlude, so let's see what that girl is up to.

The faces that graced the pages of her notebook were all familiar ones, all people that mattered, all people that she loved. Working cameras were scarce in Jackson, and finding film for them wasn’t exactly easy either. But even if she could indiscriminately snap photos of everyone she cared about, she’d still opt to sketch them instead. To her it was a labor of love, capturing their features as she saw them through her eyes, using her own hand to create each likeness.  Joel on the porch steps with his guitar. Dina smirking with her arms crossed. Jesse with his teasing grin. There was a sketch of her and Kat from when they were together that still made Ellie smile even though they’d decided to go back to being friends. She’d even drawn scenes and images of things she’d seen around town or out on patrols. There was a whole page in one of her earlier books dedicated to her birthday trip to the Wyoming Museum of Science and History, including a side by side comparison of Tommy and the thick-skulled dinosaur that Joel swore was the spitting image of his brother. 

4- @burntheedges spoiled us by sharing TWO snippets - one of Girl Dad Frankie and one of Ballet AU Din (which I am very interested in, btw) and since I already shared some Din, let's see what I have for Francisco. (this is from a very nebulous wip for a Dog Rescue AU)

Standing from his desk and crossing his arms loosely over his chest, Frankie shifted his weight to one leg and called over his shoulder. “Hey, Ben?”  “Yeah?” The other man’s footsteps grew closer until he was standing in the doorway, one hand leaning on the frame. “You need somethin’? What’s- oh.” Frankie moved aside so Benny could see what - and who - he was looking at. “Well I’ll be goddamned.” The grin he wore was audible, causing Frankie to roll his eyes. Cocky little shit. “Guess I was right. She came back.”  “Yeah,” he said, letting out a small huff that was just as much astonishment as it was amusement. She sure did. He watched as you finished parking in the same spot you’d pulled into two days earlier, directly next to his truck, and then pulled a box out of the back seat. 

5- @stealyourblorbos tagged me in some wip drawings of Miguel O'Hara - a character who I only know through and because of her stunning artwork of him - and what I know I like very much. Gonna be *vague* here and post a couple bullet points from notes of something foolish I'm working on:

You’re co-starring in an action movie with Dieter. It’s your first time working together, but you get along really well and have instant chemistry. 

You’ve already filmed ⅓ of the movie - including a pretty hot sex scene - and now you’re working on scenes involving stunts and SFX.

Spring doodles!! She's so cute and silly? She's been on the MIND, let me tell you. Have some close ups!

I've decided she has a pet baby lamb named Tuffet bc A) they're (bb lambs that is) cute and B) I thought it'd be fun lmao. He just appeared at her cottage one day and did not leave, and also did not grow, and so she named him Tuffet and now they are besties. Every year she tries to sick him on Winter, and he proceeds to do not that because. He is a baby. Spring thinks he's doing amazing anyway.

I already put the Tuffet info above, lol. I just got really excited about it. Baby lambs are so fucking cute? What the fuck 😍😍😍😍😍

Spring loves flowers. She'll put that shit on anything—her baby lamb friend, her sisters, her nibblets, her great-nibblets, her fellow legates, her brother-in-law, the legends if she can sneak close enough

And she is NOT very good at sneaky. That's Autumn's forté!

(She would also put flowers on her BIL's twin. She would succeed because Winter would be glaring at him the entire time and he does not fuck with Winter).

Was a walking shrub before gaining form (will see in May in The Call part 2) and that's why her hair just stays like that

She CAN elementally charge it! And make it watery! And changes the flowers growing to reflect that—hence why it's down and long in #3. It's water, and probably runs reddish!

(Like iron enriched water, though I'm sure she can do blues—it's just more fun to have it be red >:)

I did a better doodle of the watery hair in my course notes this week:

She's fairly round in terms of hair and head! Her hair itself seems to have evolved from like, short haired sims 2 cc elevator cut with some wispy curls sticking out to Pink Diamond adjacent, or perhaps, cloud shaped, or maybe, flower shaped!

She's really fond of campy stuff, I've learnt. Apparently her favourite ordibeing restaurant is Rainforest Cafe (more on that later this week, I hope!)

As much as she hates shoulder season with Winter, she is very fond of the way things look after they freeze.

Winter uses this to her advantage when she pulls THIS KINDA SHIT in spring!

(As of drafting this post Sunday night. It was raining still. And ice is falling. And things still look decently frozen. It's supposed to be 12 whole ass degrees tomorrow though!)

She is so small and short and cute, I want to squish her guys. She's been so fun to draw the past week/weekend!

I guess? I've SORT OF started the to-draw tag adventure? I actually have stuff from the very first to draw pages all sketched out! I haven't had time to colour them/line them, and accidentally did them back to back so NOW I can't use my MARKERS or it'll bleed through and I'm kinda proud of those particular doodles, lol! Don't wanna ruin EITHER SET. The twins look much better than the Cold Front, admittedly. Their pose was more dynamic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've got one more set for those I wanted to add as well, I just haven't gotten around to it. Thursday night used to be doodle time but alas, Critical Role finished and now I find myself having to more actively make time for doodles. (Which, I'm doing! Progress is slow, but husbando is a sweetie who reminds me that me time is necessary and he's fine).

GOD it's SO FUN being able to draw your SILLY LITTLE GUYS FROM YOUR HEAD 🥰🥰🥰🥰 100/10, WOULD recommend!

I love the way you draw Sticks so much! I've been wondering actually, any tips for drawing her hair and giving it like. A nice shape? I feel like I either make her boomerang locks too small or WAY too big.

I really suck at giving advice but imma try

I struggled with this too so I decided to just sort of deviate from being extremely on model and just be lenient with it a bit

So it all depends on what kind of artstyle you want to articulate bc in my case step by step I draw her like this

(I rushed the sketches bc I'm pretty tired rn !! Sorry)

But for ppl w different artstyles the process is different especially when you don't want her hair to be as messy or random

At first k try to just draw uhm the lines so I can sorta get the basic shape of her hair thingy before I do anything else

I Personally try to add these triangles (parts of her hair sticking out) at the top and bottom of her hair.. thingy (??) Bc otherwise I.. don't actually know how to draw her well lmao

At the end I add the ends of her hair which almost always look horrible especially now bc i rushed everything
