i don't want to further clutter up the notes on this post while responding to the tags below but the persistence of the "finale is short/scenes are missing/extra ad break” conspiracies drives me absolutely bananas when i've watched the finale ten times and have posted about this A LOT trying to clear things up. (disclaimer that yes, i'm a goddamn destiel shipper but i care about Facts above all.)

ok but this is weird because i'd swear the episode was shorter (11 missing scenes!) but okay. maybe we all mandela effected ourselves into #beleving that. because it felt shorter. but i will die on the hill that it had another ad break. i understand this person has the thing #recorded with ads so i am thinking maybe different ad breaks in different idk time zones??? #because the finale did air an hour earlier in canada so maybe idk i am reaching here but maybe different states or whatever had different #ad breaks??? as for the last minute changes - wasn't the cover band asked for permission to use their version of carry on like a week before #the thing aired??? so even if the episode was 42 minutes and had no additional ad break - which i am side eying but lets say all was normal #i will always say they were changing thing until the absolute last minute (carry on my wayward son X 2 #the crew on the bridge which is not only giant 4th wall breaking but also wow they really got all those people in one place in times of #covid???) #anyway. tinfoil hat stays on sorry guys :/ (via @officialmisha)

short and snarky: there are plenty of real and sourced examples of network homophobia and scripted/directed destiel scenes being cut to point to. we don’t need to make this stuff up just bc the finale wasn’t what we wanted. so it’s not the mandela effect — it’s ppl repeating a conspiracy/rumor bc it supports their narrative and it’s easier and more fun to repeat something that supports a narrative they already believe (misha or something destiel was cut) vs the boring act of fact checking.

like i said. i've watched the finale ten times. i’ve gone over the episode with a fine toothed comb and posted a detailed breakdown of timing marks on my blog. it’s actually extremely obvious where the ad breaks are once you know roughly where to look for them (they have a longer fade to black instead of a quick cut scene change). there’s no room for extra ad breaks and i think this conspiracy/rumor persists in part bc the episode feels so sparse in terms of cast and the fact that the episode’s momentum hits a barn post (and rebar) less than 20min into an hour-long programming block.

also i’m begging ppl to actually look at that timing mark post. it’s very straightforward and i spent a lot of time on it. i don’t care if ppl plagiarize it at this point if it means this conspiracy stops. i've got almost every second accounted for.

the "eleven missing scenes" that you're thinking of are probably from the finale script of questionable authenticity that @spnscripthunt acquired back in 2021 which can be found here. it's dated as the “final draft” from 11 sep 2020 and filming on 15x20 wrapped on 10 sep 2020. as noted at the bottom of this superwiki page "[the] script came from someone claiming to have been the person who did the closed captions for the show in Russia. There are some indications that it possibly may not be authentic, but this has not been confirmed."

if we go with the possibility that this was a transcript meant for subtitles, the "omitted" scenes were probably written but never filmed since it's the "final draft" and not a color revision (blue, green, yellow, etc). unfortunately, i’ve lost track of where i read it and a preliminary duckduckgo search isn’t bringing it up bc there's a program for script writing called final draft, but iirc the “final draft” version of a script is a transcript of what was filmed (e.g. there are parts of that 15x20 script that ended up being deleted scenes on the DVD). spnscripthunt also has an example of a confirmed final draft for 09x02 (funnily enough, also a dabb-penned ep). if anyone can confirm with a source that i have the purpose of the “final draft” version designation wrong, please let me know! i love being proven wrong with Facts.

i do want to acknowledge that the two “final drafts” do look different from each other and the 15x20 one doesn't look like a “real” final draft script since it lacks the revision/versioning dates that a script would normally have on the cover page. it could be that it was intended for subtitles; there's the chance it's been re-typed to anonymize it if there was anything indicating who the "owner" was, tho that seems a wee bit cloak and dagger to me. and again: it's considered of questionable authenticity. there are some things that don't quite line up but oh dear god i don't want to get even further out into the weeds than i already am.

i won't disagree that it's weird as hell that neoni only got asked about using their cover seven days prior to the episode airing (tiktok here). my personal theory is that they were hoping to get a more expensive song (maybe a zepp song, idk) and didn't manage to secure the rights in the end. again: this is pure conjecture on my part! but i could absolutely see someone working on the show hearing neoni’s cover and liking it and then maybe they were using it as a placeholder until it got down to the wire and they had to make a call/send the ep to networks. because yes, it is baffling they played a song and then a cover of it with only a 40 second break between. (i do actually really like the neoni cover! the placement is just weird and i think it could have worked if they had the kansas version at the beginning and closed with neoni's full cover.)

as to the 4th wall break COVID stuff: robert singer talked with variety magazine about filming the last two episodes and the logistics of filming during a pandemic. whether they should have been filming during a pandemic is a separate discussion but their use of office vs set pods, strict quarantining and daily testing meant that they had zero positive tests in the month they were filming (18 aug to 10 sep). so given all that, i personally don’t think it’s totally out of pocket to have everyone standing outdoors on a bridge for maybe an hour to get a drone shot of them together. (i won’t get into incubation periods and viral load, but if everyone tested negative that day and every day for a month prior, it was a fairly low risk scene to film outdoors and for all we know everyone was masked until the last possible second. there were plenty of outdoor masked protests in 2020 that weren't superspreader events.)

and before anyone brings up “but misha was in vancouver!” i know someone who looked into it and they said no dice, nothing matched up between the backgrounds in those pics and places in vancouver. his statements about “us” going back to set over the summer were pretty generic in hindsight and “we”/"us" could be him or the spn crew generally. unfortunately i’m not able to find those tweets but the use of “we” was likely so as not to give away he wouldn’t be returning to set. (bc we were absolutely casbaited!) and bc it comes up a lot: the "onion field pic" was from when they were filming 15x17 and was not taken while filming 15x19 and 15x20.

besides, it would be ridiculous to go through the financial and logistical headaches of bringing someone into the country to film during a pandemic, only to cut their scenes in the end! honestly, the script is pretty tight when the scenes are given so much breathing room! the only thing i could see being further cut down is The Monologue and even then, i don’t think there was any intent to cut it down given it was filmed in fairly long takes.

i’ve said it many times before, but i believe the finale was fucked long before they returned to set. walker got the green light in sep 2019 and it was being marketed heavily as a “follow on” show to spn given jared’s involvement. the demo they were courting for walker has little to no overlap with the demo for destiel fans — why would they want a finale that catered to a demo they weren't interested in courting? we just went through a historic double strike that exposed so much of the rot of business interests overriding creative vision. this isn't completely unfounded conjecture.

i will not apologize for the length of this bc i wanted to be thorough, but i do want to give context that i think the reason these conspiracies and rumors grind my gears so much is because anyone can fact check all of this. the truth is out there and absolutely none of it is that hard to find. the most time consuming/difficult part of this was finding someone who had a DVR’d copy of the finale from when it aired live and they actually found me themselves after i’d been low key asking around for a year!

and like. i get it. conspiracies are fun. but there are so many sourced instances of network homophobia and destiel being cut that it's like. why is this something folks are hanging onto? the cw is notorious for having upper level meddling with finales bc there's a follow-on show they want to shuffle fans along to and spn is no exception.

I finally finished watching episode 10 of Monster Next Door and I have thoughts! I went into this episode fearful that it would be another badly written "oh no miscommunication!!" story, but I think I ended the episode more in love with the writers and the show as a whole then I was before.

Ok, lets get it out of the way: Diew's sudden refusal to communicate at the start of the episode felt like a misstep at first. Especially following on the heels of (a) how good Diew was at addressing God's behavoiur during the trip and (b) their first time having sex where the lead up and the way it's shot very much indicates that Diew feels safe and trusts God. The show even doubled down on giving us soft, understanding, earnestly caring God:

It doesn't help that they then had this whole montage of God and Diew having happy 'honeymoon phase' moments after Diew starts lying to God. Like... the order in which these scenes were edited makes no sense to me. It feels like it comes out of left field in a way that belittles the intelligence of the viewers

However, I felt that the writing, the directing choices and the acting (good god the acting!!) more than make up for this.

Firstly, I fucking LOVED God and Pee's showdown.

The completely unhinged escalation from polite friendliness to 'you wanna fight!?' that God goes to is so real and understandable given that he's been stewing in his jealous uncertainty since seeing the diary, especially compounded by Diew's withdrawal and then pretending that nothing was wrong. Pee's comments are exactly the words to push all of God's insecurity and anger buttons and I love that the show let him go there, especially with the physicality of God's massive frame adding weight to the threat.

UGH I love Big's performance here. It's so easy for actors to overact in these kind of scenes but the transition from suspicion to indignation to anger to fear (because God basically has confirmation now that Diew hasn't been honest with him), was so well handled. He embodied the scene so well in his entire demeanour: look at the difference between the first row and the second row - how Big gains all this tension in his neck and shoulders, how he holds his chin up and nostrils are flared, like the feelings are making him animalistic; hackles raised. This scene was just SO good.

Yuck, yuck, yuck, mad props to Pee's actor for being able to convey slimy so well. *shudders* I hate him and he really hasn't even done that much. I feel bad for the actor because he just has a face for it. I hope he finds a way to make lots of money off it. ^_^;;

Secondly, God and Diew's fight was perfection.

The dialogue was so, so well written?? Here it is, here is their amazing communication and the almost magical way they are able to find the right words to say being wielded with utmost precision and its working against them. This is the fruition of all the groundwork the writers have been laying down for 9 episodes.

Look at how succinct and effective this dialogue is. They're both communicating incredibly well, expressing exactly their thoughts and feelings in the moment, and yet things aren't working because both parties are missing just enough of the facts to make things worse.

I think Diew thinks he is being honest here - at this point, Pee really isn't anyone to him other than a senior. He's over Pee (I mean, he's not over what Pee did, but he doesn't have feelings for him). It's a perfectly legitimate response without the context of God reading Diew's diary.

But the problem is that they're both communicating on completely different wavelengths. Diew thinks this is about God feeling jealous of an ex, but God's frustrated because he's starting to think Diew's never fully opened up to him. And Diew is baffled because as far as he's concerned, he's opened up to God probably more than anyone else (maybe except for Game).

The bracelet becomes the symbol of their misaligned perceptions of the same thing. Because ultimately, what this is really about is that they're both coming with fundamentally different ideas and expectations for what a committed relationship looks like.

To God, knowing these things about your boyfriend is a matter of course; it's a reasonable expectation. But Diew still feels that certain precious things should be held back, even from a boyfriend. It's incredibly subtle, but look at the difference in Diew's expression before and after God reveals he read his diary:

There's a hardness in Diew's eyes, a sense he feels betrayed because this was never territory that God had the right to. When Diew walks away, it's because Diew isn't able (or willing) to tell God anything about his past relationship. It's a chapter closed, a hurt buried, that has nothing to do with God.

Fucking hell, Big, what a delivery. The way his voice breaks and the way you can hear the tears in his throat. But also, this is so valid? God has been the one most consistently reaching out throughout the relationship; partly because it's just easier for him as the extrovert, but also partly because he was willing to put in the work because Diew was worth it. But at this point it feels like he's gained zero ground whilst being gaslit into thinking their connection as real, and that hurts.

The whole premise of this show is "can two very different people with diametrically opposite personalities be together," and this show is telling us that the answer is No. Not without compromise on both sides; not without making fundamental shifts in your own thinking to accomodate your partner. God and Diew fundamentally different understandings of how relationships work, and this isn't going to go away without them talking about it.

The reason I feel so blown away is that the writers took the well-established communication both characters have and weaponised it to drive a wedge between them. This is miscommunication and misunderstanding done well; where the audience is the only one that has enough information to sympathise with both characters and therefore makes our heart break all the more because of it.

Don't touch me, the parallel shots were just so well set up and so well done.

At no point did anything in this entire fight feel unnecessary or gratuitous. The showmakers did an amazing job with this episode and I really, really want to take a moment to appreciate that.

Honorable mention to:

The simple and yet incredibly effective sound design during God and Diew's fight. The way its just their voices and the sinister, haunting piano ringing at pivotal moments.

Park and Big's amazing portrayals; like... I'm so incredibly blown away by the emotional maturity in their depiction of Diew and God and their feelings during this fight. The precision which both of them brought -- it wasn't too much or too little and I'm so grateful for what we got.

Diew's handling of being stuck in the elevator with Pee. I expected it to be more dramatic, but in the context of Diew's personality (he's actually incredibly straightforward and not prone to emotional outbursts at all) it made a lot of sense. I loved how clear Diew is about not wanting anything to do with Pee (who continues to be a slimy slug of a human, yuck). I love that he doesn't let Pee give the excuse of "my friends made me," because hell yes, you choose the friends you keep around you. Also, the flashback shows that Pee was an asshole even when his friends aren't around, so.

Anyway, yes, this episode has left me bereft.

I'm reframing how I'm looking at the 24 episodes of Perfect 10 Liners.

This Sunday, the 27th October - the day the first episode of Perfect 10 Liners airs - here in Ol' Blighty (and possibly across Europe) the clocks will go back. The end of Daylight Savings for this year.

The clocks will then go forward again, the start of Daylight Savings for 2025, on 30th March BEFORE Perfect 10 Liners ends.

This show and its constant presence will get me through the cold dark months and I will know that BEFORE the series ends the light will return to the skies and my life.

I feel I need to explain my shocked reaction to the length of the series...because it is not about the number of episodes. I can watch 24 episodes of something - and I have done, and more - but they have usually been either binge-watched in a few weeks or double episodes over 12 weeks.

My discombobulation is more to do with how time is portioned out for me throughout the year. The obvious ones being weekly and monthly, but also more personally, the lengths of certain projects I do at work or at home.

Even three months for one series can feel unimaginable. Take Peaceful Property as an example, I feel like I've maybe had the series for 5/6 weeks...but no, it began in AUGUST... August, when it was still 'summer' and I was deep in the preparations of this current project I'm doing at work, which now feels like has been going on forever...

Half a year, 6 months, 24 weeks is a HUGE portion of time that I just don't usually work with. Like I said on my tags for the post linked above, the activity/project I'm doing at work in Feb/Mar hasn't even been finalised yet, so to contemplate still watching the same programme through many different portions of time - some which I don't even know about yet - is so WILD to me.

BUT as I have said in this post, I am redefining that because the six months of winter always feel so much longer than the six months of 'summer', so I'm using this period of time that the show will be airing as a way to endure and move through it - with light at the end of the tunnel (quite literally).

srsly I watched this ep at the airport (maybe I should've allowed some slight spoilers on this one) and I almost cried in public bc WAAAAA feels

loved seeing Hunters heightened senses in action and also the others trusting them without question

yanno I always assumed Wrecker carries the heavy stuff bc the others physically can't, but Tech just went "fine." and swung that thing over his shoulder like a bag pack wtf

Yanno the guys might not mention it, but the way they're all super tense and keep bickering? yeah, they miss Echo too. And Cross. Confirmed. I'm not taking criticism at this time, thank you.

I'm surprised Tech was initially sounding so apathetic, but.... the "What's your issue?" comment felt..... okay wait, lemme backtrack

my dad has autism and he would often speak to me like that, not realising how hurtful it sounds. He'd also defend himself the same way Tech did in the ep ("I was only telling the truth", "that's just what the situation is, we have to deal with it regardless of how we feel abt it"). So when Tech talked to her like that? dang man, that hit home hard

but I love that they went there, yanno? they addressed the communication issue between Tech and Omega.

since there's still tomorrow's episode – and then next week's – i'm not entirely willing to form opinions yet. but on the other hand, some of these thoughts have been lingering in the back of my head for the past week or so and i need to put them into words.

thing is, i don't mind angst. it would be foolish of me not to expect it considering the way the story has unfolded and the themes of this drama and the fact that we're getting close to the end. so yeah, i don't mind angst – as long as it's done well. but you see, this is where my fear comes in.

bc i don't just want a happy ending, i want a good one. i want an ending that makes sense. i want an ending that does right by its story and its characters. i've seen how other dramas i've enjoyed (even loved) start to crash and burn within the last 2-4 episodes and it fucking hurts to spend all that time getting invested in a story only for it to fall apart right at the end. while i don't think castaway diva has been perfect so far by any means, i have considered it one of the best dramas of 2023 (that i've seen) and i would hate for that to change just bc of the ending. week after week i've sat on my couch, almost giddy with excitement, knowing there's a new episode waiting for me. and although i'd say i'm pretty easy to please, that doesn't actually happen all that often.

it's not just the happy ending that's important to me; it's how we get there as well. if it's only angst for angst's sake and everything that that entails – characters making choices that go against their previous actions and words or the story going around in the same old tired circles – then i don't want it.
