my #1 toxic trait is that I actually really like Titans version of Jason Todd.
Like sure, he's not the best depiction of the character but god fucking dammit is it hard for me to not like him. Plus he feels a little more realistic??? Like just some fucked up kid from the streets who's broken time and time again and then manipulated and groomed by some fucking loser to be a villain????
plus he's my kind of guy
#i know damn well some dc purists are gonna come up in my ass (pause)#and be like#“IT'S A TERRIBLE DEPICTION OF JASON TODD!”#boo-fuckin'-hoo#i hope y'all realize that there will NEVER be any actually “good” live action DC things#because WB and everybody else creating this shit doesn't care enough#at least marvel has that disney money#WB just wants to make as much bank off of this shit as possible#and honestly?#i'm not complaining#jason todd has always been my fav batfam character#and so any content i get with him in it is good fuckin' food for me#i will settle for subpar shit#dc#dc comics#dcu#dc robin#dc universe#batman#jason todd#red hood#batfam#batfamily#titans#dc titans

If you guys could please participate in this poll and reblog it so I can get as large a sample size as possible, that would be amazing!
I'm really interested in the results, and feel free to put any of your thoughts/comments/reasons/notes in the tags or in your reblog!

watching Arcane without fandom interaction is really interesting actually. I remember watching Jayce's Progress Day speech in s1e04 and being so relieved he did the right thing and listened to Heimerdinger (one of the only times I ever agreed with Heimerdinger lmao). I mean, did he see the inventions he presented? A giant fuck-off punch gauntlet and a death laser? And he didn't think that would harm people? I thought it was the peak of Tech Bro Bullshit.
(as an engineer, I've heard a lot of Tech Bro Bullshit and I'm a bit more sympathetic to it/the motivations behind it. The hextech inventions shown in that episode was a prime example of Tech Bro Bullshit: something created with the genuine intent of helping people, but in a way that addresses the symptoms of a deeper, societal problem. It never gets to the root of the problem and it addresses the problem in a way that helps the capitalists (now our miners can do their work safer and faster! oh, so their boss can make them work longer hours?) The inventors never seem to recognize that their invention can do significant harm and isn't ready to go out without more testing.)
The fandom reaction seemed to be... more negative, though? Or maybe that's because I'm in the jayvik sphere more and there's more Viktor stans? I think that was one of the fandom reactions that surprised me.
I just re-watched the episode knowing the prevailing(?) fandom opinion, and I ... hm. I understand Viktor's POV and the sense of betrayal much better. I'm impressed by how quickly Jayce salvaged that speech. I think the main issue isn't the choice that he made, it's that he should've made it before he got on stage. Impulsiveness has always been a Jayce character flaw, though. I still don't think he chose wrong.
Also, for the record? Every time I insult hextech and call the inventions tech bro bullshit I am also insulting Viktor. He is one of the two founders of hextech, he's an equal partner, and he deserves to be insulted just as much as Jayce. A lot of times I see people acting like the bad hextech decisions that were made was pure Jayce, but nuh-uh. This is an equal partnership, folks
#me.txt#arcane meta#other fandom reactions that surprised me: fandom perception of silco (he's literally a drug lord guys. please stop calling him marxist lmao#fandom perception of mel and jayce (if you hate mel and/or jayce you're wrong and you have terrible taste and that applies to all seasons)#reaction to jayce killing viktor in the commune (if you heal someone and they die when you die it's OBVIOUSLY evil non-healing. cmon)#how much people like jinx (that's on me i didn't know she was big in league)#wait i just realized that the pattern here is i'm surprised that ppl consistently sided with the white ppl and against the black/brown ppl#hm. much to think about#well. maybe not that much#i guess there's also the class argument but. i mean. silco is a drug lord. he's richer than everyone in zaun#he's getting that money by exploiting her people. jinx is his kid. he literally created and headed a council just like piltover#how much of a class argument is there?#i guess if you look at it on a ... overall societal level? eh. i'm gonna be honest i dont have the lived experience to critique that#silco's one of those characters i liked and then i realized how fandom thinks of him and now i'm just annoyed when he's brought up#shame

I hope we see Lucifer training Charlie in Season 2. Plus it'd be cute if Vaggie was watching and Charlie decided to see if she also wanted to join in. Because Cmom, you know if she asks him to train her too he's gonna fold like Adam.
Are you me??? I literally left a reply on someone's post about wanting to see Lucifer more in season 2 and being scared it's not gonna happen cuz he's so OP and the main character is charlie and she has to solve her own problems
and I just went in with a reply like "OKAY BUT WHAT IF HE GETS TO TRAIN HER???" That solves both problems???? We get to see more of him AND Charlie gets to problem solve without him needing to just OP his way through the story
I didn't imagine Vaggie tho! :o
seriously tho the exact thought that's been on loop in my head is Charlie accidentally activates some sort of mega-angel beam or whatever, hits Lucifer in full, and she just panics CUZ OMG DAD, DID I JUST KILL YOU??? and then from the pile of rubble, Lucifer sticks out a thumbs up and you hear a muffled "THAT WAS AMAZING SWEETIE DO IT AGAIN"
#hazbin hotel#lucifer morningstar#lucifer#charlie morningstar#okay but can I be real with you guys#I am lowkey TERRIFIED that something's going to happen to Lucifer#not for narrative reasons#which like okay I can imagine them too cuz i'm a very cruel writer to my own characters#BUT#for meta reasons#it's terrible that Lucifer is my favorite cuz we're just not going to get to see him that much#he's way too OP#he can create whatever he wants#power sweeps everyone#literal king of hell nobody is going to mess with him#so unless they really nerf him with the depression (which doesn't seem likely given the finale)#they're (the writers) are going to need to come up with a reason#why lucifer can't just sweep in and solve all of his baby's problems with a snap of his fingers#which leaves only a few options for him#1) most of the problems onward are social/relationship based which Lucifer can't control#2) most of the problems are with heaven which he has no influence over#3) he's dissociating too much of the time to realize there's even a problem happening#or... my greatest fear#4) he's going to get killed off/have something incredibly bad happen to him that immobilizes him to raise stakes#or I guess 5) alastor manipulates charlie and Lucifer to transfer his deal over to lucifer instead of charlie Little Mermaid style#but still#ngl as a writer#I don't see very many GOOD options for his character in the future#which is very conflicting for me cuz I love angst and whump#but I also want good things for my faves so

JJK/Gege Akutami appreciation post
Yeah, you read that title right. I get it that the entire fandom is upset with the latest leaks but I've seen so many angry/hateful comments toward Gege and it's making me sad. So here's a post to highlight some things I like about JJK. :)
This is in no way a complete list, so feel free to add on with your own takes too! Also, it's a long post, so I'm putting the meat of it under the cut.
The characters & their dynamics
Jjk has a huge cast, and yet every character is so unique and compelling. The reason I got into this anime (and later the manga) despite not really being into anime in general was how charming the main four characters were. Yuuji, Nobara, Megumi and Gojo immediately hooked me; I could probably watch 10 seasons of a slice of life show that's just them getting into shenanigans.
Fun interactions aside, my favourite thing about the characterisation is how everyone in this manga is allowed to have their own view on the world, especially on what it means to live a good life and die a good death. The narrative allows those views to clash without preaching about who is "correct". Characters disagree and learn from each other and their views develop organically (not necessarily in a positive direction, but always dynamically in a response to the situations they find themselves in - Yuuji's arc on how he views himself and his goals comes to mind). That stuff is really hard to write.
And it's not just the main cast either. The supporting characters are very memorable too; even minor ones have distinct personalities and clear motivations and often a backstory to explain why they are the way they are. My personal favourite background characters are Mai, Noritoshi and Tsumiki.
The worldbuilding
Can we talk about how creative the concept of curses and cursed energy is? Negative emotions accumulating into physical manifestations of things that people fear, hate, etc. is a hell of a cool idea. This is why the curse villains are my favourites in the series: from Mahito as a representation of the worst of humanity in his childish glee and sadism and cowardice to Jogo's philosophy of curses as "true beings" because they don't hide their nature and Hanami's almost sympathetic care for nature are all interesting explorations of how we view the world around us that would not be possible in a different kind of magic system. Add to that the array of creative techniques that sorcerers possess, the cursed objects, and the grade system that conveniently allows us to keep track of the danger levels of all this - you get an impressively complex magic system that still remains understandable (and fun to watch even if you don't want to keep track of the nitty-gritty and are just here for the spectacle).
Not to mention that jujutsu society is, well, a society. We get a sense of who the powerful and the oppressed are in this community, how their powers factor into that, how different characters feel about this, what they are doing to change it or on the contrary, to keep the traditions going... Every character exists in the web of a clear power structure which they interact with, influencing it and being influenced in turn. This results in a super interesting dynamic where certain characters can be enemies one moment (for example when the Kyoto students try to kill Yuuji during the exchange event on Gakuganji's, and by extension the higher-ups' orders) and allies the next (when it's time to pull together against a curse).
I'm reserving my judgement on the plot, themes and overall character arcs for now, because those things can only be really analysed once the story is complete. But even if I'll be unhappy with the ending, I'll still be very grateful for this unique world and its loveable inhabitants.
Of course, you might disagree with me on all this, and that's fine. Dropping the manga because you don't like the direction the story took is fine. Choosing to live in fanfiction delulu land is also fine. Gritting your teeth and sticking it out till the end despite disliking the plot because you're too invested to quit is also fine. Criticism and jokes are fine. The one thing that isn't fine is hating on the creator for the way they are choosing to tell their story.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Tl;dr: If you're upset about the direction JJK is taking, please try to remember why you cared so much about it in the first place. And remember that Gege is just a person sharing a story with us, and disliking someone's story is not an acceptable reason to hate on them.
#i'm aware that probably no one will read all this but i had to get this off my chest#the fandom is getting so toxic it's such a shame#gege is out there writing a manga where dehumanisation and the pressure to be perfect and how damaging that is is a MAJOR theme#and people are getting mad because the story isn't perfect/up to their standards#am i the only one seeing the irony here#how can people be mad at someone for just... creating something?#even if jjk has the absolute worst terribly written dumpster fire ending imaginable i'll still be defending gege#they came up with an incredibly creative world and a huge cast of memorable loveable characters and i'll always be grateful for that#i was trying to keep this post positive but the ranting kind of slipped into the tags sorry#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#jjk manga#jjk fandom#fandom culture#can we stop hating on creators for creating please#gege akutami#gege when i catch you gege#i'll say thank you for creating a story that impacted me even if it wasn't perfect

Introduction: Cain Flametongue
Cain Flametongue, formerly known as Brutus Quietflame, is the cub of Gaius Horncleaver and an unremarkable dam who did little for her cub aside from provide him with a younger brother named Jullus nine months after he joined an Iron Legion fahrar.
The cub grew up in a difficult time for Iron cubs with shamanist tendencies, and unlike Augustus, he wouldn't have Gaius' proximity to the fahrar to protect him physically nor through reputation.
He didn't so much take the name 'Quiet' so much as have it foisted upon him by his bandmates to emphasize his nature. He spoke little and stayed to himself. Being a larger sort, and steadily reliable even with his pyromancy, he was a strong lieutenant. This wouldn't last, though, as he was eventually scouted by Flame looking to sow seeds of discord--rumors of Baelfire's aspirations for godhood were known years before the actual ritual, after all, and the Legions needed to be distracted while the shamans worked and studied and prepared.
Brutus took the first opportunity to accept recruitment, leaking details of raids and plans, small things to help Flame with infiltration or avoiding patrols. When he was asked to assist in a strike against Blood and Iron, wiping out several warbands at once, he again eagerly accepted, and personally wiped out his own warband, including his own brother who had been assigned as his guard.
Though Flame appreciated him, and seemed to offer opportunities for his growth and development, once again, this wouldn't last, as eventually, the Citadel of Flame would take place and Gaheron would be slain by the commander and his comrades. Knowing Brutus' ties to Horncleaver--and having conveniently not been present at the slaughter of shamans--it was assumed that he had been playing the long con. Brutus was tortured: his tongue was burned out when it became evident that he wouldn't talk, and eventually it became clear he would be killed.
So he killed them all first, flaming arrows finding their marks and white-hot illusions luring his captors to their deaths. Finally free, Brutus cast off his name and ties, and swore vengeance on the name that's plagued him all his life, Gaius Horncleaver.

I need to stop taking book suggestions from random Top 10 lists. the more bad sex scenes I'm subjected to, the better The Sympathizer's is.
#who created this genre of ''great premise terrible execution written at a YA level but with the most boring/sterile/sexless sex''#because I have a whole lot of questions#I'm not anti sex scene bc you can learn a lot about the characters. not like these tho.#the author getting dangerously close to a metaphor or symbolism and then just tells us instead#like if you're going to tell not show then does it need to be in this horribly sexless scene

one reviewer gives a one star review, saying, "i can't believe the writer would let the torment nexus exist in this world. doesn't he realize how awful the torment nexus would be in real life?"
another reviewer, with a two star review, says "yeah, the book was okay, the characters were all great, but i just can't get over the torment nexus. why is there such a terrible thing? don't they realize they'd be better off without the torment nexus?"
a third reviewer gave five stars, saying "i'm glad this book was written. they really need to create the torment nexus, that would really improve civilization by a lot." in the comment replies to this review, the reviewer indicated that this review was not sarcasm.

You know what, enough time has passed and I've given media reviews/reccs in the past, so I'm gonna recommend Pixar's Win or Lose as seriously worth a watch.

I came into the show with zero expectations a few months ago and was pleasantly blown away by the writing, art direction, and character dramas.
Win or Lose is an original drama mini-series created by Pixar that follows a co-ed middle school softball team and the week leading up to a big championship game. Each episode picks one character, either a kid or an adult, and focuses on their perspective/storyline during that week. So in the first episode, we notice a lot of weird mysteries or threads in the background (Why is this character crying uncontrollably? Why are these two fighting?). As the show progresses, we get to see each character's sides of the story and how they interconnect with and affect each other. It's very, very well written and well crafted.
Each episode also tackles a pretty mature and at times distressing theme about growing up and parenting, similar to Inside Out. Here's a one sentence synopsis of each episode's general conflict and theme to give you an idea. Spoilers ahead:
Laurie, who's terrible at softball, desperately wants to impress her father, the team coach, but is dragged down by anxiety, visualized by a growing blob that whispers intrusive thoughts.
A geeky, middle-aged middle school teacher tries to get over a break-up with online dating.
Rochelle, who's the eldest "forced-to-grow-up-too-fast" daughter of a struggling, social media-obsessed single mother, must raise money on her own to pay for her team fee, falling into dangerous situations with older teens.
Following the perspective of the single mother during the events of episode three, we see her side of the story and the complicated ways she works to fend off judgmental parents and support her daughter.
An imaginative but lonely little brother of a softball player becomes friends with a group of teenage outcasts, for better and for worse.
A boy and a girl on the softball team begin dating, but undergo relationship troubles when the boy's insecurities about coolness, honesty, and masculinity cause him to lash out.
Kai, a Black, trans-coded girl on the team, must balance her self-confidence and love for softball while appeasing her sports-loving father, who pressures her to always be her best.
The culmination and climaxes of each episode's arcs and conflicts collide in the big championship game, with a main focus on the team coach/father from the first episode, who's ready to burst from the stress and tension of an impending divorce, his anxious daughter, the game, and mid-life feelings of worthlessness.
Each episode also features a creative way of externalizing and visualizing emotions, concepts, or mindsets like anxiety, e-dating, and pride. Rochelle transforms into a tall business woman with shoulder pads when she goes into money-making-mode. Gravity flips and disappears when she feels like she's losing control of her life. Some episodes even feature completely different animation styles. As a result, each storyline is presented through an unreliable and exaggerated perspective that prioritizes the protagonist and skews reality, often shown through the eyes of a child.
These screenshots really don't do the animation justice, you need to see it in motion to get the appeal. The dialogue is snappy and fun too, and the characters are immediately charismatic and likable. Here's a clip from the first episode.
The two biggest controversies this show had were 1. its art style and 2. the censorship.
The art style was ridiculed and criticized online for looking "grub-hub commercial-ish," which has been said about previous Pixar movies as well (Luca and Turning Red). The characters are extremely cartoony, with sometimes weirdly exaggerated proportions. And admittedly, some of the designs are not it (the noseless barista...). But I think a lot of people and artists will agree that even if the art direction looks strange to you, it grows on you quickly. Pixar knows how to animate and they know how to work with their own models. Plus, given the limitations and labor of a 7-episode show, it makes sense that things had to be simplified. With the gorgeous lighting, textures, and colors, the show's style really reminded me of stop-motion or Nintendo games. It's just fun.
Secondly is the report that Disney made Pixar censor and re-write Kai's episode, which was originally supposed to be an explicit exploration of her trans identity as a young girl and an athlete. The animatic of the original version of the episode was leaked online. The news and decision is extremely disappointing, worsens the final show, and really reveals how careless and conservative Disney is about representation. But if you watch the actual episode, you'll notice all the ways the crew tried to circumvent Disney and maintain Kai's trans identity through coding and nods to gender dysphoria/guilt/expression/affirmation/euphoria. (Her storyline made me cry too.)
I don't want to come across like I'm defending the censorship. An episode dedicated to a POC father-daughter relationship as they navigate Kai coming out as trans while playing sports on Disney+ would have been so powerful and important for family audiences. And they try to supplant the trans storyline with a clumsy softball vs. baseball edit. But I've seen talk about how this storyline was completely erased or how this show is straight up transphobic, and that's just not true. The crew did their best with a truly shitty situation.
If you like shows like Craig of the Creek or Bluey or Steven Universe, you'll probably like this one too.
#personal#ramblings#not art#long post#i don't normally yap about a show but idk. i feel like this one got a unfair and bad rap in the animation community but i really liked it

I will not fall into the trap of rewriting everything because my writing skills have improved since starting the work
#like it's now partially frustration at my previous lack of direction and lack of complex narrative purpose#which yes technically with this bit I don't actually need to have that but I would like to and can see what I can do#it doesn't help that the time I have spent writing this seems to have all smashed together into a big knot of sameness#I can do better. I want to do better.#I also don't know if keith's the right character for this. but it's his story he evolved with this story#and I also fear that if I change the character I will not use keith for anything and I don't want to because he's just a guy!!#he's just a guy.#and also I do think the character who would replace him would yet again be. very similar to the characters of kester#aka Whipping Boy (the shit he goes through man.) as well as snowy/teddy/jimmy/arthur (bitch syndrome)#it's mostly about the similarities to kester. and a couple of other characters you haven't seen yet because those stories are new#I'll tell you their names! one's raven he's a terrible dad (no really) one's just known as The Kid for now#because they're a kid. and they're edgy in terms of costume.#actually those stories and their specific reasons for being the way they are would make them distinct. it's just mostly. kester#and if you know why this would be you know.#sigh. it's boiling down to three things.#1. the fact I keep restarting projects because in the process of creating them my skill level increases to the point where I'm not satisfie#and keep starting over which is a death loop. it's something ik you should never do with comics n so on so why I'm even considering#it with writing I don't even know#2. I fear I will abandon keith as a character if I do what I'm beginning to think I need to#and 3. I fear the character who needs to appear in the story in its evolving direction is too similar to another character

Alright,
A base lore info about my setting.
Most of it was yapped away through the asks already, but I decided that it's still worth to organise this stuff in a coherent manner. This text also doesn't really touch on the character's arcs and their relationships with each other. This is more about the wider setting.
SHORT VERSION:
Tginf is a horror roadtrip game I'm planning to make. Embark on a terribly convoluted forest car ride with different local creatures hitchhiking your car.
EXTENDED VERSION:
The main character: You (are going to) play as the Nameless, a 20+ year old without a name, a concrete gender or any understanding of who to become to avoid getting crushed by a closing in adult life.
The forest:
The forest they got unlucky to travel through is a strict eco system. Everything not useful to it gets digested by it. Literally slowly disintegrated to at least feed the soil. At least this process takes some time.

The feudals:

Luckily, the forest road is ruled by three higher beings that can save unlucky travelers by giving each of them a useful (in their opinion) role to play.
The names of the feudals are:
the Oxygen, the King of the road, the Mine.
You can easily envision their domains if you split the forest space in three layers. Everything above it, everything that is on the ground, and everything below it. Every forest entity that the Nameless encounter serves one of them.
Because their territories are literally stacked on top of each other, the three don't get along particularly well and have been in a territorial conflict for centuries. For feudals, acquiring new followers through picking up the lost and stranded is another way of getting new resources in it.
The specifics of each feudal and their individual followers:
The Oxygen:
The Oxygen is physically invincible and, because of that, she never had to rely on anyone in her existence. This had a big effect on her personality. Unlike the King of the Road and the Mine, she doesn't really NEED to pick up lost and stranded to make new followers. She can create servants out of thin air, like she did with the Dummy*. She picks up travelers for her own amusement, since entertainment plays a big factor in a lot of her actions, and because the King and the Mine are invested in collecting them.
Her followers are:
The Dummy,

the Diver,

the Time Seller.

* The Dummy was created as a jab at the King of the Road's second hand - the Knight.
* The Diver is there as a statement of ineffectiveness on the King's ruling manner. He does the same type of job his followers do, but unlike them, his mind was in no way altered or modified*
* The Time seller, despite previously being human, was made into a tiger, because the Oxygen wanted to see what would happen if she fully dehumanises somebody. She likes experimenting like that.
The King of the Road:
The King of the road is very physically fragile. He needs protection, and, despite his rather gentle demeanor, time made him paranoid and fixated on the idea of control. He collects the followers to avoid any new and unpredictable variables appearing in the forest.
Through trial and error, he came to a conclusion that love is the greatest source of loyalty and motivation, so he tampers with his followers' brains to make sure they love both him and the work he gives them.
His followers are :
the Tenant,
the Radio host,
(Sorry, don't have a proper picture of her yet, since her main way of communication is...well...radio, and because I ran into Tumblr's picture per post limit, I decided to cut what I had of her imagery away)
the Knight.

*The Forest is full of eldritch, sentient and, most importantly, hungry places, such as the House, the Radio Tower and the Grand Lake. The King aims to station his followers in them, so they also stay in his area of control. The Tenant and the Radio host view their designated places as if they are their marriage partners. They love them, they provide for them.
*The King also prefers to take his time before taking a new follower in. After all, the more he waits, the more the traveler gets digested by the forest, allowing the King to rebuild his new follower to his liking. Sadly, the opportunity to wait long enough rarely presents itself because of the Oxygen and the Mine interfering all the time, thus, the only follower he got to fully reconstruct from the state of blank meat was the Knight. This made him the most predictable and by extension the most trustworthy being in the forest to him.
The Mine:
About a year ago I watched a documentary about mine workers. A part of it was dedicated to the fact, that, in case of that particular mine, people should have been working inside of it 24/7, otherwise the tunnels were guaranteed to slowly become toxic. What caught my attention was the way they spoke about it. They said something along the lines of "otherwise she would start to suffocate". And that unexpected personification never left my mind ever since.
SO, the Mine in tginf sufferers from a constant lack of oxygen, and starts to gradually suffocate if there's is no one performing the maintenance work inside of her. The problem is - she is toxic, thus none of her followers live particularly long inside of her. Which places her in a constant struggle to get herself the new ones. She lets some of her followers out on the road only for one purpose - to promote the service to her to the new travelers. Followers like that are all called Pr agents. Out of the three feudals, the Mine is the most reliant on others to survive.
Her followers are, you won't believe it:
Pr Agent 117

Pr agent 121,
Pr agent 124/178 (the number changes depending on the story route)

*None of them lived long enough to meet the other.
I also made a voice claim post some time ago, you can check it out to feel the characters too
And Incomplete Character relationship chart :]
