✦ Lost in Limbo Devlog #5 | 08.31.23
August is OVER and that means a brand-new Lost in Devlog!!! 💜 We are very excited for September to begin because that will definitely mark a new era of Lost in Limbo's production as the whole team will be finally free of the shackles of the spanish education system!
This devlog contains mainly progress in the programming and writing department (yours truly in charge), but we have also made some progress in the art department.
In addition, we will use this devlog to discuss a few changes and decisions we have taken in regards to the course of the demo—so feel free to grab a drink and join us for the ride!
First and foremost...A glimpse of our main menu! 🎉💜 I have been working hard this month to implement the UI as we finally got the files, and I've also animated and programmed the main menu screen, the configuration screen, save/load, etc. The dialogue box and everything else is also implemented and working perfectly, and of course we have a custom cursor thanks to miss Raquel! 🎉
Needless to say, LiL is my first coding adventure, so I'm sure our code isn't perfect or in optimal condition, but hopefully our Kickstarter will allow us to hire a programmer to fix that. I think I've done a pretty good job considering my lack of experience!
Also, special thanks (again) to our dearly beloved @crescencestudio for bearing with me and graciously lending a hand when I struggled the most. They are officially my ren'py mentor and I'd like to take a moment to illustrate our my struggle to y'all with a simple screenshot:
(Also it's kind of funny we both have animal crossing pics in our discord accounts, that was ✨ a coincidence ✨)
<<Inside the holy judgement chamber of the Silver Spire, may your words carry only truth, lest punishment is what you seek.>>
This month our dear Raquel has been working on backgrounds when she's had a moment, and this is one of the pieces she has been rendering and polishing! We'll also take a look at another background (a really important one) to bring it up to our new standards. As I said in another devlog, the master degree we were (and still are, until the 15th) attending has changed our way of seeing and approaching art pieces, so we are looking into improving pieces that are still in the making!
First of all; we are super proud and happy to welcome a new member to the team of Ravenstar Games: Allie! They'll be our editor and proofreader, and I'm sure you know and love some projects she's been on, like Blooming Panic! or our recent and beloved Intertwine. They are a fantastic fantastic writer, an incredible person and a passionate dev that I've had the pleasure to know and work with for a while now, and I would trust no one else with the script of our baby! (and if you are a writer, you know how hard it is to let others read your stuff sometimes. It's like baring your soul to them; it could only be Allie for me!) So please give them a big warm welcome!!
For the writing department, some devlogs ago we talked about the script suffering some changes—well, they have officially solidified now!
We have cut some content that was not exactly relevant for the first experience we want y'all to have with the game. A lot of context and exposition that helps, but is not absolutely necessary to enjoy what is perhaps the most important thing for an indie team and their game; the first demo and the impression it leaves behind. That content has not been scraped and we have decided to save it for an extended demo; the first demo will still be as long as it was in the beginning, as a lot of new content has also been added to prioritize the LIs, which is what you are here for.
We also made this decision because we were once more faced with the reality of: there's only four of us and it's not realistic to do seven LIs + six supporting characters + their expression charts + 13 backgrounds + everything else for a first demo. We are learning as we go, for better or worse, and sometimes you have to sit back and say "right. this is not going to work" so we had to do that. Sadly, we were not realistic with what we wanted to do, but hey, we all get too excited and dream too big sometimes!
This changes will ensure you get the best first experience with LiL without losing important, meaningful content, and hopefully be excited for what will come later. In my humble opinion, the demo script is now in much better shape than it was a month ago. Trust. And just wait for Allie to edit it—that's going to bring it to perfection.
Oh! We'll also be modifying the Masterpost soon as some things are a bit outdated and can be improved, so expect to see some new stuff in there!
It's 1 am here right now as I write this. I'm in bed. Today has been a day. Tomorrow I'll take a look at this and correct a million typos. See? Another reason we need Allie with us. There's screenshots to take, videos to make, and everything is slowly coming together. We are in really good spirits, motivated and hopeful for the near future. This has been long enough as it is, so as always, thank you for being part of Lost in Limbo's journey, and for the love and kindness you give us again and again. We hope you all are doing great, staying hydrated, and taking care of yourself 💜 See you very very soon!!

A quick sketch i made to go with a few notes i took last night to finally give answer to a question that i got asked ages ago but never replied, this is meant to be a scene that's not relevant to the plot and if i were to draw the comic that would be left off screen so see this as a lil extra but i'll leave you the notes under the cut with a couple useful links for context
Context 1 /2 / 3 / 4
Before you read know that i'm not a good writer, this is not meant to be a fanfiction or anything, it's just a dialogue transcript with some descriptive aid for future me in case i decide to draw it one day, that being said i apologize for the typos gyhjuk enjoy
Scene: serene atmosphere the two are still in bed, Uri resting his head on the back of his hand looks at Pravaal in a tender yet confused way
U: pravaal can I ask you something?
P:mhm~
U: I admitted to you and to myself that I could not move on…but you, you seemed pretty convinced when you said you were over me… Then why this?
P: this what? ( Attention piqued, raises an eye row)
U: y- you know, 'sleeping' with me, I…I know I started it but- did you just take advantage of the moment or do you actually care?
P: my wow, you think so lowly of me? Sighs I do care, I did move on better than you sure, and I was plenty mad at you ad well but….
U: but?
P: I've had several girlfriends and boyfriend after the "alley accident "but none lit the spark quite as you, I liked to tease you but to me it was over especially after how it ended, but I would be a fool if I said I didn't feel anything anymore….so the idea of a second chance at us…(moves Uri's hair from his face with a soft but serious look) we hurt each other in the past, it's a risk, but I want to believe in this
U: (blushing when the fish moves his hair away) I see-
P: (cringe but accurate word, glomps him in a playful way like idk puppies playing with each other future me will understand) not to mention I like this new dynamic going on, prince charming was good sure but the blushy panicked faces you make when you are not in control are sooooo much better
U: gfhfdh STOP IT (blushy panicked face trying to fight off the tickles)
P: ( forehead kith) cute~ (serious again) I want this to work Uri, I'm serious….but I don't want to just be your "mistress"…you have to make a choice there's no going back now
U:( serious too atmosphere change from warm and soft to cold, future me will understand like when a cloud passes by the sun) * deep breath, sits straight* I don't know how Kenah is going to take this…I love you both I…I need to think…
P: (ruffles the pensive Uri's head) take your time (leaves)
U:*sighs and looks outside the window thoughtful*
Uri will later decide to confront Kenah, his girlfriend, about it, he was ready to tell her everything but..well.she was concerned about other matters

so I'm reading the Lockwood and Co books because one season isn't enough and I need these funky lil dudes injected into my veins. and I've very quickly noticed some stuff about how it's written.
I'm about half through the first book, so i am fully aware i don't have the context for a full review, but here are the observations i have.
1) Lucy is an unreliable narrator and i can't tell how much of that is purposeful and how much is just shoddy writing. some is definitely meant to be there, but some feels totally accidental
2) George is a foil to Lockwood and the author does not like him. part of it is definitely that Lucy doesn't like George yet. part of me wonders if she even will in this version because the author takes so much joy in going on multi paragraph roasts of George at every opportunity and consistently distinguishes him with insults
3) similarly, the autistic reading of George is both stronger and weaker in the books. it is definitely not something the author was thinking about or aware of the way the shows writers seem to have been. he feels almost more autistic in the books, but he feels that way largely because his descriptions make me feel like I'm seeing an autistic person through the eyes of an abelist person who is annoyed by their autistic traits and not because of anything he is actually saying or doing. it's a very weird reading experience as an autistic person. the shallowness of it is a little frustrating
4) Lockwood is interesting. he feels more his age in the book and he has more to say while still being very reserved. there was clearly more thought put into him than into any other character, including Lucy, in this book. he feels the closest to his series version, probably because the show went into a depth with all of the characters that the book feels disinterested in. i know that I'm at the beginning, but everyone is very shallow and Lockwood seems to be the only exception. and he doesn't have the depth of his show version, but he is closer than the others. he does also have the added trait in the books of being more of a little weirdo and that is endearing
overall, if i wasn't already neck deep hyperfixated on these characters from watching the show, i would likely struggle to read these and stay engaged. and i would probably not like the characters as much. as is, i am largely enjoying them because as i read i am taking details from the adaptation and spoilers and my own head cannons and forming my own franken canon for the books in my head that is somewhere between the actual book canon and the show.
part of me is tempted to see if my hyperfixation lasts long enough for me to do a fix it fic alternate version of the books when I'm done because i like the version in my head so much better than the actual books. would anyone read that if i did? because these funky little ghostbusters are running laps around every single neuron in my brain

laurie!!! 📚 + 🕯️!!!
dil!! kissing ur brain (and ur face) before i take a lil bite out of it <3
also !! happy bday again !!
📚 ⇢ what's the last thing you wrote down in your notes app?
so i'm gonna cheat a bit in this one bc the last thing i wrote is this idea for a scene in making ghosts that is . a super big spoiler . so i'm just gonna leave another thing i have in this note (bc my making ghosts note is Massive) that doesn't say a lot taken out of context i don't think:
"don't you want me to?" "we can't" "that's not what i asked"
the second most recent note i have is the menu me and my mum came up with for the week we spent on the beach during my holiday
🕯️ ⇢ on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? why is that?
like a 3. i fucking hate editing. the only reason why it's not a 1 is because there's been times i've sort of enjoyed it ig. but they're Very rare
and i think that it's mostly because editing for me usually means a lot of extra work. many ppl simply read it over and fix the grammar or some mistakes, but i always end up adding entire scenes or rewriting dialogues and suddenly a fic that's supposed to be done already takes another . 2 months . to get finished & posted
so yeah it's not a nice process . to me . being a slow writer doesn't help either
writer truth & dare

do you think it's open to interpretation whether dean and cas are in love with each other? Like is it just as valid an interpretation to say they're not? Whenever anyone calls destiel "one interpretation" or whatever, my hackles rise. And I know I'm overly sensitive about this stuff, being a gay and whatnot, but I mean, is it? Am I just insecure because my otp isn't canon, or is destiel really more valid than other readings or what? What do you think?
Hi there. :)
I’m gonna give you the diplomatic, academic answer, and then I’m gonna give you the grumpy-ass queer lady answer. Hold on to your horses. :)
Polite answer:
All media is open to interpretation. Of course, this doesn’t mean that all interpretations are equally valid, or equally supported by canon, especially when taken in context of the entire body of the work in question.
For example, I replied to a post the other day about 13.17, and that scene where Dean and Sam are-- on first glance-- rather disrespectful of the extremely rare and valuable books in the bunker... but in context of the rest of the episode and the rest of the season, that montage wasn’t about disrespecting those books at all. It had less than nothing to do with the books themselves as objects or as sources of knowledge that should be properly cared for and respected. But out of context it kinda looks that way. So, based on that one short gif set, it might seem like a perfectly legitimate interpretation to suggest that Sam and Dean were careless with the immense knowledge and invaluable books they’ve found themselves in possession of. But in the larger context of their entire history, of all their interactions with the bunker and the untold store of knowledge it holds, and with the context of the specific reasons for their frustration in that particular scene, it seems obvious that there’s a lot more to the story, you know?
You could technically argue just about any weird headcanon can be supported by canon. I wrote this weird little post right after 12.11 aired, and it sat in my drafts for a good long time before I finally posted it. But there’s nothing in canon that legit quashes the possibility that endgame fish!Cas is where the story’s been headed all along. He’s positively swimming in fish metaphors. (sorry, I couldn’t resist) Does that abundance of fish, fishing imagery, and water imagery that have surrounded Cas for years lend itself to a literal interpretation? I mean, it’s definitely AN interpretation that is there if you want to see it, and if in your heart of hearts you believe it’s legitimately what the storytelling is attempting to convey here. But does that make it a valid interpretation that deserves serious consideration? Does it truly make sense when taking the larger story around Cas as a whole? Or is it obviously a literary theme that we’re supposed to consider through the themes traditionally associated with fish and fishing as used in countless other fictional works of the past? I suppose that sort of interpretation has been left open for us to take or leave as we see fit. It invites us to examine those references more closely, to help us understand Cas as a character and the journey his personal character arc is taking him through. It gives his experiences and growth a depth of context that is there to explore if we so choose.
(for more on Cas vs Fish, please see my tags regarding “The Fisher King.” I like to think there’s a more well-reasoned and logical line of thinking for pinning so much fish to Cas than my cracky example of fish!Cas would suggest.)
Now, looking at destiel specifically, if you take any single moment out of context, it’s absolutely possible to make an interpretation that their relationship is clearly more “brotherly,” or clearly more “familial,” or clearly one of “very close friends.” But it requires the same removal from the larger context to explain away what taken with the entirety of their history begins to look entirely undeniable.
I suppose, since Supernatural is an open canon and the story hasn’t been fully told yet, that it’s possible the writers could change course with the storytelling. It’s possible that something might prevent them from taking Dean and Cas and their story to the conclusion they’ve been building to for the last ten years. They could decide to leave this particular “interpretation” open-ended and unresolved.
Since that is always a possibility, and because I’m not psychic, nor do I have any top secret inside information from the writers and showrunners, I can’t say that my particular interpretation is more valid or correct or likely than anyone else’s. But I have yet to come up against a credible, coherent explanation for the entire body of extant canon that invalidates my particular interpretation, either.
The vast majority of arguments against boil down to logical fallacies-- cherry-picking scenes out of context as “proof,” straw man arguments, and ad hominem attacks. Because of this, I’m content to wait for canon to play out. I’ll happily watch the rest of the story unfold, and happily continue to interpret what I’m witnessing as a whole instead of attempting to dissect it out and explain away what I see as an entirely logical progression of storytelling.
As an aside here, I find it entirely fascinating that one of the most common complaints I read from people who deny Dean and Cas are in love is that the writing has become progressively more terrible, that the story of Supernatural as a whole makes less and less sense, and that the characters are behaving in increasingly “out of character” ways. And as someone in possession of rational capabilities, I wonder if their disconnect from the storytelling is simply their refusal to see and accept that perhaps their “interpretation” of the story is just... not correct.
When we attempt to deny or rationalize away certain interpretations of characterization, or certain progressions of events and how they relate to one another, the larger narrative just falls apart, you know? Of course it doesn’t make sense if you exclude large portions of it because you don’t want to see it or believe it’s happening, or important to the story.
Meanwhile, I’m over here loving every minute of it (okay... most minutes of it). So even if my interpretation isn’t absolutely 100% “correct” (and really, with any media, there’s always different ways to interpret everything, from what the color of the curtains might imply to who’s gonna get to fire Chekhov’s Gun in the third act), I’m content to continue to interpret it in a way that not only makes me personally happiest, but in a way that makes the story itself seem both logical and entertaining, as well.
Okay, that’s the end of the rational portion of this essay. Now on to the angry queer lady portion:
There’s more canon evidence for Dean and Cas being in love, or at the very least caring for one another to ridiculous, rather mind-numbing degrees, than there is for practically every canon heterosexual couple on television in the last fifty years. Think of any slow burn, will they-won’t they hetero couple, and do the point-by-point checklist of all the tropes they burned through before they got to the love declarations and the kissing and the happily ever afters (or worse, the dramatic breaking up and getting back together, or even worse, the tragically breaking up forever). I challenge anyone to name one hetero-presenting couple who required as many love tropes for audiences to recognize and acknowledge they were in love. Yeah, I’m thinking of that whole “they shared a pencil” post.
So yeah, there is likely a measure of heteronormativity to it, and a lot of the arguments against also devolve into rather gross denouncements that there’s no way Dean’s not straight, because he said so that one time... Mr. “I lie professionally” who also never actually said he was straight... gah... I’m not gonna dig up every ancient meta post on the subject. If anyone is legitimately interested in understanding why making those same tired arguments just doesn’t have any legitimacy in a reasoned discussion, they can damn well do their own digging. It’s not like any of the evidence is difficult to uncover, and it’s not my job to spoon feed it to every naysayer myself.
I feel like I’m standing on a Mt. Everest size pile of rational, reasonable, well-argued analysis supporting the claim that Dean and Cas are in love. *stands back and points at my whole entire blog again* If anyone would like to come back at me with something even remotely worth my time and attention to persuade me to alter my interpretation, I suggest they get busy. I’ll just be up here on top of my mountain enjoying the clean, destiel-scented air up here.
And finally, who says it’s not canon? Ah, right. Moving goalposts. At this point, I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that Dean and Cas don’t love one another. And profoundly, at that. I mean, you don’t give up an army for one guy if you don’t at least like him a lil bit. You don’t shout down God begging him to bring back that dude you’re kinda buddies with, or sink into a suicidal funk that reverses completely within minutes of finding out said buddy’s alive again. You don’t offer to march to your death with your chum because he’s such a nice guy and all. I mean... honestly. How far in denial does someone have to be to suggest they don’t love each other? At this point, when comparing Sam and Dean’s reactions far into s13 to Cas’s death in 12.23, either you accept that Dean has much stronger and far different feelings about the loss of someone that Sam does love and considers a brother, or else you kinda have to assume that Sam’s just kind of a dick for not being as broken up about Cas’s death as Dean is. So... which interpretation do you think is the one they’re trying to convey?
Bleh, whatever. I await the inevitable inbox full of nastiness that I will cheerfully delete while judging every anon who sends it as someone who really should find a better hobby than antagonizing strangers on the internet over a work of fiction.
Anon, basically, don’t let the bastards grind you down, okay?
Now for some reason I feel like listening to Achtung Baby. Imma go do that and feel the love.
#destiel#the scheherazade of supernatural#btw for anyone who still feels the need to antagonize destiel shippers#that tag would be the one for you to find a lot of that content you'll need to actually address in order for anyone to take you seriously#Anonymous
