Pics from a recent used bookstore expedition + my lil buddy who i miss dearly (he is now comfy at home with his owner who is back from their trip).

Started my pediatric Infectious Disease rotation this week and I am enjoying myself immensely so far. I'm already learning a lot and seeing very interesting pathology. Plus, it's a treat to wake up after 5 am, and I don't have to work weekends, either.

Music in Us, Episode 2

I told myself I could watch a GL show without blurting out facts about the music. I was wrong. I can stay silent no longer. My dear friends, how utterly delighting is Dokrak? What an absolute cutie pie!

I have to start this off by singing the praises of Bonnie here. This sweet little song she sings for the bar, for Pam, for our heart's delight - that's some next level shit. Not only is this a live recording, not only can we watch and listen to her every note, her every move, she's also using jazz chords that are not for the faint of heart. And in her quiet, charming, determined way, she is absolutely killing it.

I love everything about the performance. I love the area sound, I love that the production team didn't gloss over little slips in the performance, I love the song and Bonnie's voice. And as I am writing this, I realise the beauty of the fact that, in this Asian show, the character uses chords from American music, which is based on African music and is observed by my gay European ears. (Australia, we love you. Also, my statement is oversimplifying things A LOT. But the sentiment is real.)

If anyone is at all interested, I will record a little tutorial on what Rak is playing here.

Secondly, I would like to congratulate the music editors on the sinister music that is playing whenever we have scenes with Nene. There's this thing that nerds call 'drone' which simply means that we have a note in one of the deep octaves that keeps going on and on. This particular feature of the music works very well for me - I think this character is scary as hell. For me, the efficiency of the music became especially obvious when I watched the scenes without it. It was almost a relief. Which is no way criticism on Mim's performance, she's doing a wonderful job.

I am excited to see what the show has in store for us. If we get to hear other songs from Rak, if Rak finds other ways to call me old, how everyone will get out of schmozzle that is already so complicated two episodes in. Thank you for reading!
