I was at a Palestinian solidarity gig last night & the one Palestinian artist who was going to perform had COVID so the organisers asked around to see if there were any Palestinians who'd like to say a few words instead.

A local guy who was born & raised in Gaza offered to speak. He started with "I'm an engineer. i'm not a poet or a politician. I don't... do public speaking… I had no idea what to say when I came up here. So i'm just going to tell you about the street I grew up on."

And then he did! He went down the street building by building. He told us about the ice cream shop on the corner, the grocery shop, the charity that supports people with intellectual disabilities. He told us about the people who he knew growing up, the families who still live in the different houses. He told us about the university buildings and about his friends who quit being accountants to start a band together. All on that street.

All of which is gone now, by the way. Bombed to dust.

Have you read, or would you be interested in reading, the book on which the movie Bright Young Things was based? It’s called Vile Bodies and is by Evelyn Waugh, the same guy who wrote Brideshead Revisited. It was his second novel, after Decline and Fall, and is mostly standalone but there are a couple of references back to Decline and Fall - including Miles, who appeared in one scene in Decline and Fall before becoming a more prominent supporting character in Vile Bodies. It’s been alleged that a few elements of Vile Bodies are pseudo autobiographical, which makes sense, as much like Adam, Evelyn was a less wealthy writer friend of a lot of partying aristocrats. Socialite Stephen Tennant, who traveled in the same broad social circles, alleged at the time that the character of Miles was based on him, which is plausible but not proven.

There’s a few references throughout Vile Bodies to the misadventures of Miles, so as a Miles fan you might find it interesting.

Given that the book was published in 1930, it plays a little coy with his sexuality in a way the movie is a bit more direct about it, but it’s still pretty clear if you’re familiar with the slang of the era.

Actually, yes! I am very interested in reading Vile Bodies! I downloaded a pdf version to read, the only problem is that I prefer physical copies over online, so it's a bit difficult to get through. I downloaded it a few days ago and I only read a tiny bit and haven't gotten back to it. Maybe when I have enough money to buy a physical copy, I will. The book itself seems very interesting and I'm really hoping it'll give me more context to the movie. And, yeah, I figured it'd be more subtle with Miles' sexuality because, like you said, it's the 30s, but I am very familiar with the slang, mostly because in middle school I had a big hyperfixation on the 1920s-40s era, and if there's anything unfamiliar, I plan on just looking it up. But, thank you for recommending the book to me! I do plan on reading it eventually :)
