I don't know that you'll have a different perspective on this, but tmikpop posted about some of the goals of the possible kakao and sm "collaboration" and one of them was removing a restriction on artist performances(I didn't even know that was a thing) and having them do 20 performances a year.

Maybe I'm out of touch, but I would think that's a good thing? That's literally a tour? Artists(in general) like performing and touring. But you have everyone in the quotes crying about sm overworking the artists(including army, which is funny cause a couple days ago they were laughing about hybe disbanding all these sm flops and now they're concerned about them)

But like, am I the crazy one? I didn't see anyone celebrating the fact that these artists(their favs in a lot of cases) are gonna get to perform. Maybe its coming from the shawol side with Key just saying that he'd like to have a concert but he hasn't been able too, and seeing how much Taemin desperately wanted to perform for fans but couldn't cause of covid before his enlistment, the idea of being upset that they get to do that as much as possible would be insane to me?

If Kpop fans were predisposed to infantilization, fetishization, and victimization/othering of Asian artists, COVID exacerbated this. The "big bad" became real, affirming all their worries that Oppa needs to stay at home.

First, COVID really changed the playing field for those of us in jobs that involve extensive international travel. Some of us went from traveling every month to zero. This is true for traveling musicians, which is most SM artists. COVID put us all at home together but separately. I do think that some have gotten used to this "new normal" where no one goes abroad. I notice it in the outsized receptions at airports and with fans seeming to have soured on touring altogether unless it is directly benefitting them. The line seems to be "it's too much unless XYZ artist is playing my city."

The overwork stuff, in my opinion—and I'm focusing on English-speaking, western fans here—is tied into Orientalist views about Asia and the perceived cultural differences at play. I say perceived because there is interesting work I've read tiny chunks of about how colonizers in the past centuries created the myth of Orientalism and the East/West split. Essentially, we are more the same than we are different (duh, I mean, not rocket science) but I'm sure if you're a westerner, you could name lots of media, and even recent media, that plays on this facile idea of the strange and differentness of the East. It's tied to xenophobia, too, which was very pioneered by Xenophon who went around reporting on what he thought were backward, crazy cultures he countered in his travels during ancient times.

All this is to say that I think fans don't have a realistic idea of what a demanding career in any country looks like (because lol, omg ... ), and they cannot put their selves in the shoes of a person like a Korean popstar who has worked for countless years to enjoy an abundant career. If they could, they'd understand that while safety and health are important, they're not just about "too many tour dates". It's actually about what do those days look like, how much well-being is built in, and how much rest time is afforded?

I'm hesitant to use Haechan as an example, but I think I'll bite the bullet to say he got sick, he got COVID, and he now has a heart condition of some sort. We're not privy to the details of what that is or what its limitations are, and rightfully so because how is that our business unless he shares it? If, against medical advice, SM order Haechan to do X amount of work, he does it and then gets sick, that's grounds for a lawsuit. SM has made terrible mistakes in the past, but I do not judge them as a company operating against medical advice. If Haechan makes his own decisions against medical advice and SM fails to make an intervention, that could also be a lawsuit around duty of care, but I'm not a Korean law expert.

You might remember the Michael Jackson lawsuit against his record company regarding duty of care re his death. If the record label knew they were paying for a doctor who was doing XYZ, are they culpable for not providing safe care? Are they culpable for arranging a tour when they likely knew the state of his health? His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against AEG but ultimately AEG was not found liable. That case is really good reading if you have an interest in the duty of care that record labels have for artists.

All the above in mind, no I don't think extra tour dates are an issue because touring is the norm, and it's what artists and fans want. I also operate on the belief that SM operates legally (lol, what a thing to say right now), and does have artist well-being enmeshed in their work. Does that mean artists won't get sick? Of course not. People will always get sick or have personal problems, but whether the label is liable/culpable is a legal issue and for many a moral issue that isn't well represented in legal opinions.

the child who was with taemin, her mon made an insta post saying that taemin was really attentive and nice during the production of the video. she also mentioned a part of the video that was cut out was when her daughter asked taemin why they changed to just 4 now, and the mom said taemin calmly explained it. there are probably some other parts like this cut out from the video.....it makes me wonder who made the decision for the cuts? perhaps the pd felt it was best to leave certain things out for a kids focused show? the video hit me harder than i thought it would at some parts, but overall, shinee was so nice interacting with the kids. perhaps all these kids (and yoogeun) could do a show with shinee......one can imagine!

I think you’re right that they might’ve not wanted the video to focus too much on that aspect especially with the target audience, but I do wonder how Taem or the others approached that topic (although, there is not really a need to know). I thought Minho’s answer was... interesting. 

What I was left wondering was if they were really ready to dive back into their past

in front of cameras... Like that video felt so heavy on Onho’s part. Even though Minho handled it well, you could just sense that distress, but that girl making him laugh at the end was so sweet. 

It really did hit me harder than I thought as well, but like you said they were so sweet and lovely to the kids and it was nice to see these interactions!! 

And I’m totally voting for a show like that!!! SHINee with kids is always a win!!!

Basically, towards the end of the show, they showed a clip of their past concerts in Japan and I think the guys weren't ready to see all those OT5 clips and Jjong smiling or crying with them. They just shut down, Ontae in particular and Tae left the stage not long after.

My thing with people loving Taemin first before SHINee or people who only know Taemin is that they really are missing out on the growth and experience he got from being in SHINee and being around 4 other boys that pushed him to want to be the best on all fronts. The journey of Taemin is only satisfying through the lens of his whole career aka from his pre-debut training to now. No one becomes that successful and outstanding without other people of the equivalent caliber (or close to) surrounding them.

Omg I'm getting flashbacks from my childhood, my siblings and I held no loyalties. Survival of the fittest! Get in where you fit in was a way of life. Label your food, clothes belong to no one if you didn't buy it yourself, the driver is always right, if you passed the class then give your old work, to snitch or not to snitch lol. Man, it was a mad house sometimes.

The Brother Chronicles AU is 100% a mad house. Four boys all within four years of each other age wise? Including a set of twins? Absolute madness. The fact that they have enough room for each kid to have his own room is a miracle, because lord knows they’d all rip each other to shreds regardless of who roomed with who. And they did; until Taemin was five, they lived in a three bedroom house where the twins shared one room and Jinki and Taemin shared another. Their parents saved every extra penny they could to buy a bigger house because they couldn’t handle the constant fighting and yelling and name calling and toy stealing and crying.

And after Taemin, the “happy accident” baby, they made absolute sure they wouldn’t have any more kids. No way they could handle another one.

Even though Minho and Kibum are twins, they don’t always have loyalty to each other. “We aren’t identical after all,” Kibum always says. Minho and Kibum fight more than any of them. When they were all younger, it would usually lead to Taemin finding Jinki and hiding in his room because he was afraid the twins would turn on him afterwards and take it out on him, and Jinki usually protected him from their ire if it wasn’t truly deserved.

Jinki does always joke though that Taemin is his favorite brother. “It’s because you’re cute and you listen to me and you hang off of every word I say.” Taemin always just grins at him. Jinki is not so secretly his favorite brother, but the twins don’t really care. They often call Taemin the annoying baby brother anyway, and they push him around and pester him more often than Jinki ever has, so it makes sense. Plus, they assume it’s because Taemin shared a room with Jinki the first few years of his life; Jinki must have brainwashed him when he was a baby, they say.

“Jinki stuck worms in your ears to eat your brain,” Kibum would whisper to him.

“He’s actually an alien pretending to be your brother, and he’s going to abduct you,” Minho would say.

“He’s a serial killer and he’s gonna hack your head off when you’re asleep.”

“He’s gonna sell you to a stranger for a puppy, we heard him.”

“He eats your Halloween candy.”

“And tells Santa you’re on the naughty list.”

“Did you know you’re adopted?”

“MOMMY!” Taemin would scream and run to their mother and cry about the crazy, mean things they say to him. Kibum and Minho can always be heard laughing hysterically in the background until their mom or dad goes in to scold them and tell them off for being mean to their baby brother. Jinki would usually go comfort Taemin too, even though some of the things they said would make him scared of Jinki for a day or two.

i'm not trying to clown you or anything, but i'm just genuinely curious as to why you bias sunwoo now? like what do you love about him and all? if i'm not mistaken, you used to be hyunjoon-biased correct?

and yes! you are correct :’) i used to be very hyunjoon biased! but if i were to make a comparison,,, hyunjoon was really just a crush but sunoo is the one i really fell for. anyways gush under cut cuz i doubt anyone cares

so if i have to be honest, i “fall in love at first sight” w groups. usually the person i notice first becomes my bias. theres always one defining feature i usually fall in love with. so usually i tend to bias dancers (ex. ten, taemin, chaeyeon, wooyoung, san, etc etc) but with tbz i had exposure to them since boy and had been following their music since debut, but not the group. 

Not until no air dropped did i really begin to fall in love w them. I had a lot of trouble picking a bias w tbz, which is very rare for me but i also think its because i had a ton of exposure to them before. in the boy mv i think the ones that stood out to me were sunwoo hyunjoon and jacob. In giddy up i considered joining the fandom (bc legendary song omg) and the ones that stood out in that mv were sunwoo chanhee and changmin. unluckily for me, i didnt end up getting into the fandom until no air dropped and i spent over a week picking a bias between hyunjoon, sunwoo, changmin, and kevin (as u can see its not that surprising i fell for sunwoo lol,,, it was just a matter of time) anyways, it was a long week but hyunjoons smile really just,,,,,, sold me

like cmon are you kidding me look at that he has the prettiest smile on earth and i still stand by that opinion. and after really investing myself in tbz, i found myself loving his unique dance style. the way he presents himself is so genuine and different from what i usually prefer in dancers. My favorite dancer is by far Ten and my brain auto compares dancers to him but with hyunjoon,,, the style was just so different that it was impossible to compare the two. So yeah I still love hyunjoon a lot! its just,,,, i love sunoo more

tbh i have no idea when i started falling so hard for kim sunwoo. it really just came gradually,,, and thats super strange for my “love at first sight” aries venus :’) though i dont remember exactly what moment made me start swerving, i know his lyrics and rap style played a big part in me becoming the biggest sunoonator on this earth. His first verse in 4EVER is by far the best thing i have ever heard (and in an interview he also said those lines were some of his favorite lyrics hes written!!!

another thing that really swayed me was the bday prank. that clip made me pay so much more attention to him when before i was one track minded on hyunjoon. but seeing him just break down when he realized those he loved weren’t actually fighting showed me how genuine he was. by paying more attention to him, i really just,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, swooned for that dorky smile of his (example below bc i want to c’:)

and his overall quirkiness.

something ive also been loving and noticing recently is his absolute hatred for skinny jeans LOL and same. I literally wear joggers every single day bc i cant be bothered. Sunwoos fashion looks so comfortable and he pulls it off so well! its something i can appreciate and love

and the final thing. this is probably the biggest reason i absolutely love love love him! its the way he interacts and treats his fans. idk if you follow the fancafe but sunwoo updates the most out of all of the members. He basically writes in the fancafe every single day, even if its as simple as “deobis what are you doing?” and no matter what, hes always talking about deobis in his updates and almost always reminds us that he loves us! theres one fancafe letter he wrote that i have bookmarked and saved and its the one where he literally starts off by saying that hes awake at 5:20 am (iirc this was after TFMAs where they won the next leader award) bc he cant sleep and he just pours out his late night (or in this case early morning lol) thoughts and its just him talking about his career and how he is so honored to be able to perform on the same stage as his seniors. he also talks about how he is so grateful to deobis and begins explaining his thoughts about the relationship between artists and their fans and how beautiful he finds this relationship. and he continues to describe what kind of singer he wants to be: a loveable singer who can cheer others up. he said that deobis are the ones who helped him become the person he is today and how he always will be sincere to deobis that cheer for him :’(( this is a super dumbed down ver of his letter bc my korean isnt extremely good but he basically ends by saying he’ll continue to improve for deobis and that he really loves us :( this letter was then posted around an hour later at around 6 am :( so he basically spent an hour writing a letter to deobis at the crack of dawn just bc he wanted to tell us his thoughts,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, i rly,,,,,,,, im so sad hes the sweetest :(

[neglects my final papers to do this]

1. It’s hard for me to pick a FAVORITE MV but honestly “1 of 1″ is so cute and fun and I love how happy the girls look and how everyone is just having a good time. Also the aesthetics in “View” are perfect even if the music video itself is wild. Other than that I also think that “Why So Lonely?” is really pretty. 

2. HOSEOKSUS okay so the first BTS MV I ever watched was “Dope” and I did not like them at first because I wasn’t into their music and their fans got on my nerves BUT I thought V was really really cute and he was like my unofficial bias when I wasn’t into the group. I was also vaguely aware of Jungkook and thought he was okay. BUT THEN I actually got into BTS and figured out who JHope was and was like

4.  Being negative about groups always turns out bad so I’m not going to throw any particular one under the bus.

5. Okay I’m weak because I legit cannot pick. I feel like every girl group I have listened to has at least one song that I like. f(x) and EXID are probably my top faves, though. Also I’m working on getting into Bestie because they are beautiful and have great vocals.

8. I DON’T WATCH K-DRAMAS but tbqh I am kind of interested in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo solely because I think the main actor is cute and I heard he’s dating his co-star in real life. Wikipedia says it’s awful but people on here really like it? So idk.

18 + 19: oh lord okay. Kim “Kazoo” Jonghyun has been my ultimate bias and husband for three years now. Shinee and EXO were kind of my introduction to Kpop and I ended up seeing Jonghyun in gifs on my dash and was like “wow he seems cute!” in fact if you go back on my blog my earliest reblogs of him are very tame. BUT THEN I got more into Shinee’s discography and really started liking them and started to learn about them as a group and holy h*ck Jonghyun was my immediate favorite for so many reasons. First of all he was very sensitive and said multiple times that he didn’t think there was anything wrong with guys crying and being open about their feelings. Secondly he would always talk about how much he loved and appreciated his sister and his mom which I related to because I love my mom too. Thirdly HIS VOCALS like need I say more? High note king?? Fourthly how he grew up pretty broke and had to move a bunch of times and immediately began helping out his family once he made it big. Fifthly how aware he seemed of certain social issues. Like he has talked about welfare and how it’s nothing to be ashamed of and he supported a bi trans fan and calls guys cute all of the time and responds really quickly if he does something wrong. Sixthly (not a word) he’s ADORABLE but also super pretty and always has those #looks. Seventhly the support and love he shows for the rest of the members ESPECIALLY HIS SON LEE “FRANCISCO” “TAEMINO” TAEMIN. I could go on but you already know how much I’m love him.

24. BTS HONESTLY BECAUSE I HATED THEM AT FIRST OMG like I just thought they were really overhyped but then I was like “you know they do work really hard” and I ended up liking a lot of their songs. Also my h*ckening bf is there so you know

30. [An unpopular opinion about BTS] INU was better than Run and the government knows it. Yoongi is a better rapper in terms of technique than Namjoon. BigHit should have given more attention to Jin’s graduation instead of focusing it all on Jungkook. Every era is actually Hoseok’s era.
