Little fun ask to make you possibly smile. When you publish your book, would you be excited to see fanfiction of said book?
Thank you for this cause it did make me smile to think about it.
I would be SO fucking excited to see fanfic of a book I wrote. The idea already blows me away with fanart, the idea that what I write could inspire someone else to make yet another thing, thus continuing the chain of the Daredevil creators inspiring me to make a thing. So needless to say fanfic would have me squealing and running around shouting, 100%.
IIRC as long as I was still writing anything in that series I couldn’t actually read any of the fic, but the second I was done I’d probably want to bulldoze through and read Literally Everything (tm) because it would just make me happy. To me a successful story is one that inspires an emotional reaction; fanfic doesn’t really come from meh. GIVE IT. GIVE ALL THE FANFIC.

i know you've been talking about jason lately so i'll ask about smth different... robin jason (sorry)
idk idk lately i've been wanting to take a peek at his robin comics for the sake of writing fic (ofc...) but i'd like to hear what u think before that, a summary of sorts if u may (i also wanna contrast what u say with what i get out of it so yeah)
i feel like his robin days are so muddled by his identity as red hood later on, and even before that it was his death. u had people constantly blaming jason for dying in text (or else they'd have to admit bruce can make mistakes and everyone in dc is allergic to doing that) and painting him like someone reckless and violent (classist editorial u need to DIE), and then people in fanon painting him like a sweet fella who would do nothing wrong and as well as being bruce's Only Actual Son etc etc for the sake of making the situation around him all the more sadder (yeah yeah pathetic meow meow we've all seen it)
and i'm just curious bc i rlly wonder what the actual comics say about him, most likely something in the middle of this? exams are killing me but my god i'll come back to life after im done just to read jason robin's days... have a good day !!!
the difficulty with reading about jason as robin is that there are three primary periods that all differ fairly dramatically from each other — pre-crisis jason todd is a strawberry blond acrobat who’s almost adopted by dick grayson before becoming robin; post-crisis jason todd is a kid from crime alley who steals the wheels off the batmobile before becoming robin; and post-crisis, post-utrh jason todd is a very angry, very violent kid who becomes a cautionary tale after he gets himself killed (something he is often blamed for).
we can walk the line here. pre-crisis jason isn’t particularly relevant because so much of robin!jason’s stories depend on his reinvention after the reboot. all the crucial factors leading up to death in the family — growing up in the alley, both his mothers, his relationship with the robin mantle, his developing relationship with dick grayson, his slow schism from bruce, his relative isolation from other superheroes — are all crucial to who he is, especially after his death.
fanon about jason is annoying because there are valid criticisms that can be made about how he’s written with regressive, classist stereotypes, but as always it pivots way too far in one direction. jason wasn’t the “happy” or “angry” robin in the same way that dick wasn’t the happy or angry robin — they’re both characters that possess more than a single emotion. it’s true that jason was later written to be more explicitly violent (to contrast him with dick) but also like… they’re both pretty similar characters that differ in interesting ways. dick created robin to be a symbol of hope and joy. jason carried that on when he took up the mantle. they can both be angry at stuff without the world falling apart. it’s not that serious.
the dialogue about dick being a child soldier but jason being the true son makes me want to tear my hair out. jason became robin because bruce missed dick and was afraid of being alone. they’re both his gd kids. acting as though bruce wayne doesn’t love dick grayson so much that extra-dimensional beings can clock it is so fucking stupid. it once again ties into fanon’s obsession with each character only getting to be “one” thing. tim is smart, which means he’s the smartest. jason said robin made him magic, which means he’s happy all the time. dick chased after zucco in a grief spiral, which means he’s the violently angry one, with no other character traits. dick can’t have been nice to jason because he’s nice to tim, etc. seems a little silly, no?
i think i’ve only read jason’s brief run as robin once, though ive gone through a death in the family + a lonely place of dying a bunch of times, so ig my advice for reading him is to keep in mind the context in which he was created. dc comics was reeling from losing dick grayson as robin, and were really throwing anything at the wall to get something to stick. many, many negative tropes are baked into his introduction, and thanks to writers like jeph loeb and scott lobdell they have compounded over time. jason’s updated backstory is, with actual critical intent by the writer, a really good examination of how poverty and class will affect how someone views the world. his death was not his fault — and removing sheila haywood from that warehouse purposely makes his story less tragic. he was a good kid! and he was angry for a good reason. if jason had lived, i believe he would’ve carried on the robin tradition and left bruce behind once their differences became insurmountable.

I'D LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE HORNY TIMES PLEASE:
for each member, what is a/the non sexual act their partner may do that just gets them going? gets their gears turning? gets their gasses burning (???)?
bonne, this spoke directly to my soul. i feel my rotted brain melting.
Tumblr media
please journey with me under the cut…
namjoon becomes so incomprehensibly horny whenever you make some quick, offhand socioeconomic/political commentary. for example, you’re watching the news together and hear something deserving of criticism. you talk back to the tv, as if that does much of anything. well, it kinda does because namjoon is pulling you into his lap. talk to anti-capitalism to him 😩💦
seokjin is down so bad that hearing god-awful dad jokes out of your mouth is world-ending. you groan whenever he gets corny, so the fact that this habit of his is clearly rubbing off on you? because you spend so much time together that you’re swapping idiosyncrasies?? something that cringeworthy shouldn’t make him so hot n bothered, but it sure does. “i’m horny”? more like “hi, horny. i’m dad”.
yoongi has a thing for that raspy voice of yours when you’re just waking up. you’re mostly talking nonsense at this hour and suddenly, he doesn’t care if you’ve brushed your teeth yet, or if your hair is sticking up in 800 directions. nope, not a fuck given.
hoseok starts thinking wild thoughts whenever he sees you be even slightly assertive, since he’s so go-with-the-flow. for example, you’re out for dinner. you order abc and are given xyz. in your shoes, hoseok would just accept it; he’d eat it even if he doesn’t like it (he will pull faces and whine, don’t get him wrong). but the second you flag down the waiter to point out the error, he’s white-knuckling the table. the power you have 🤌🏻🤌🏻
jimin feels his dick twitch whenever he’s proud of you, which is… most of the time. this comes up in a lot of different ways: if you achieve something at work; if you speak kindly about yourself (acknowledging that you do look delicious in that outfit); or you enforce a boundary with someone, etc…. UGH. that’s his mother 👏🏻 fuckin’ 👏🏻 baby 👏🏻 and you deserve to be rewarded.
taehyung, king of oral fixations, goes slack-jawed and stupid whenever you apply lip balm. it’s not intended to be a show, really, you don’t even realize he’s watching you — but now he’s gotta taste it, taste you, wind up with that shit smeared all over. if your lips weren’t chapped before, they will be soon 😵‍💫
jungkook loses his gd mind whenever you take something of his out of the laundry and wear it yourself. you don’t do it to be cheeky; his gigantic (even for him) shirts — the same one in every color because duh — are just comfortable. they always end up in a heap on the floor, anyways, but the laundry fairy will deal with that when he’s done with you 🧚🏻‍♀️

^^ Well said. I delayed reading it because I didn't want to engage with it for a while - and, once I did, even though Collins had earned so much trust from me with her handling of Katniss and Peeta's disabilities, I was still wary. So I actually highlighted every instance where she wasn't writing him according to ableist tropes.
Yes, at 18 he's been shaped by Capitol indoctrination at school and in his family and in the media. He sees with those lenses. They come easily and automatically to him. But he also connects with people as people and realizes - oh, the District kids are just kids?? And they're being starved and hurt? I know what it's like to go hungry... This is wrong. Why should Lucy Gray have to sing just to get food? I'll get her some, even though I don't have enough.
Over and over - but if you stand up for the wrong people, you will be punished. He tries it; he protects Lucy Gray. And then he pays the price and -- somewhere along the way, he doesn't want to pay anymore. He wants to protect his family and be a winner. And you can't be a winner--comfortable and safe and in control--and stand with someone your society has designated to lose. So he chooses.
It's heartbreaking - and it is, sadly, terrifyingly, the kind of choices the majority of people make - his 18-year-old choices, that is. That moment in his life is the perfect one to write about, because it turns the eye of the story on how young people are shaped - but also, at that young stage, he's closer to the common ordinary people in any corrupt society. He's just trying to survive. It's later that his urge to win motivates him to get worse and worse and worse - no longer wanting to protect his family, in fact tossing Tigris aside, *only* wanting to win. Taking pleasure in driving people into the ground.
It takes decades of choices for him to become that person, though. And it is a creation he makes of himself. The younger person is closer to most people though.
For example, I live in a democracy, thankfully. And yet it is so much driven by what Langston Hughes called "the same old stupid plan / Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak." When I walk into work and I see the cops clearing unhoused people from the only homes and safety they have--a process that we know from studies shortens peoples' lives, hurts them emotionally and physically for no gd reason, just cruelty, just greed--living in an encampment near my work - I don't do anything. I'm afraid to. Sure, I try to donate to people who help and write letters and vote... but I don't resist directly. I'd be punished. So there's a little bit of that 18-year-old kid early in the book who knows right and wrong and yet just wants to be safe in me. And I have to wrestle with it. Because I don't want to ever forget that it's a wrestling match. That's when the perverse incentive structure starts to consume you IMO. And most of us live in societies with perverse incentive structures of some kind. Some lure that is offered to us, of feeling better than, of exploiting others, and some threats of punishment too.
To my mind, it's a good story that can make me think of feeling a pang of shame and sadness and then looking away as the cops clear people and remembering that it's a struggle, that I am not simply on the side of angels, that my society is structured around cruelty and greed and it doesn't have to be. It shouldn't be.
re: the use of trauma. I'm interested to see what Viola Davis does with the role and how Dr Gaul is adjusted in the film script - honestly, her apparent flatness was one of the things in the book I thought could be better? And in film reviews I'm reading it seems like they strengthened her. We'll see. I think she's so good at leaning into why all of this is justified because she truly believes it. And she's looking for future leaders who can truly believe it too. And, as much as she and Highbottom apply pressures to shape this youth--including that hilarious imo scene where Coriolanus naively says "people love children"--by the end Coriolanus is writing her letters and offering himself as someone who will fit that shape in order to get the rewards it offers. There's a subtle shift as that happens that is quite nuanced. And, again, focusing on his youth is so powerful because he's a being in formation, a person being created and creating himself as an adult.
There's a *reason* why Collins opens the book with this quote:
“I thought of the promise of virtues which he had displayed on the opening of his existence, and the subsequent blight of all kindly feeling by the loathing and scorn which his protectors had manifested towards him.” — Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, 1818
Though, again, the major shift of Part 3 for me is that he begins to take an active part in forming himself and he is fashioning himself to be a winner, to fit what he believes Dr Gaul and the authorities at the military school want, hoping and fearing that he won't be able to do it so well and desperately happy when the chance at rewards for doing so is still open to him. IMO Part 3 and the Epilogue aren't the end of his journey, they're the death of other possibilities and the birth of who he's choosing to become. And even he can't fully imagine where that will go as the decades pass and the choices mount up.
That is not the kind of quote you use to begin a story about someone who was born evil to begin with. The book takes 528 pages even though it's only about a few months in one 18-year-old's life precisely because it's a carefully drawn and teased out character journey, a corruption arc. As reviewer David Ehrlich put it in his review of the movie:
is Coriolanus embracing his nature or defiling it?
It's supposed to be a question, not a foregone conclusion. And I think the weight of the text itself leans in favor of "defiling" as the answer. Though it can be interpreted multiple ways (as it should be). I think the movie only lines we have from Lucy Gray in the trailer hold true: "there’s a natural goodness born into us all.” But, in one way or another, it doesn’t just stay that way, it’s a struggle. “It’s our life’s work to stay on the right side of that line [between good and evil].”
It’s a little on the nose with the themes, but I’m cool with them having her be so clear about it since apparently it’s not clear in the book I guess????

Hey, I'm an antitheist and anarchist. I haven't seen many antitheists in good faith (it's the internet, so ppl will just lie for fun), be antisemitic. From what I've seen and heard, we don't respect religious orgs and, as a whole, think they have done more harm than good for humanity. I haven't seen antithesist hate Judaism but then praise Christianity, Islam, or any other faith. (To note, like Jewish ppl not being a monolith, and Israel not representing Jews as a whole, ppl like Dawkins don't represent antitheists either - most of us kinda hate the guy cuz he's sexist, transphobic, and uses right-wing arguments about biology among other things [Dawkins is an ass])
Personally, I would like to see the dismantling of all organized religions, I don't mind if ppl have altars at home but I wouldn't respect it another book club for praising the God Emperor in Warhammer and then hurting others thru violence of thru politics.
Thank you for coming into my inbox in good faith. It's possible that many of the antitheists who have singled out Judaism aren't acting in good faith; in fact, I'd agree that most of them aren't. With that being said, you go on to say that you'd like to see the dismantling of organized religion. Let me try to explain why so many Jews read that as a threat.
Judaism is an ethnoreligion. That is, it is the religion of the Jewish people, and our culture wouldn't exist without it. People who are culturally, not religiously, Jewish will do things like eat Jewish foods (which generally are different from our cultural neighbors because they needed to follow the laws of kashrut), speak Jewish languages (which always include Hebrew words and idioms that come from our religion), and celebrate Jewish holidays (which are fundamentally religious in origin). Some cultural, not religious, Jews will even pray every day because it helps them feel connected to our culture and ancestors- that's what my grandmother did.
There are also plenty of religious Jews who follow halakha really strictly who don't count as religious in the minds of people who view the way Christianity works as the default for religion. Belief in Gd is not required in Judaism. At my shul, it's not even really something that comes up. We talk about how to interpret the Torah, but Gd is often only relevant as a character in the stories. There are a LOT of Jews who go to daily minyan, synagogue every week, pray every day, etc, who would tell you they don't believe in Gd.
Without Judaism the organized religion, Jewish people don't exist. Our culture vanishes. Our community vanishes. Can you see why a community with a recent history of genocide, losing both lives and culture, would be a little bit touchy about watching our culture vanish?

Just caught up woth the latest episode and I have SO many feelings.
1) Sam’s meltdown??? I was fully sobbing. So glad Toheeb Jimoh got his chance to shine this season, and I LOVED meeting his dad and learning the restaurant was named after him. (Do have some…feelings…about the way racism was tackled and how this extremely traumatic things is almost certainly never going to be addressed again but. Anyway)
2) NATE! Nate’s niece and his sister and him making a box and most importantly his growth!! Feeling more self confident and hating himself less and just!! I LOVED this episode for nate!!
3) Jamie?? The camera panning to Jamie as Sam hugged his dad, Jamie not arguing back when everyones blaming him for the disaster first half of the arsenal match and being SO concerned about being a prick that he just shoulders it in silence until given explicit permission, ALL THE JAMIE AND DANI BESTIES SCENES?????
Bonus: Beard’s A+ Powerpoint presentation
YEAH YEAH YEAH ANON IM NODDING FRANTICALLY
toheeb jimoh is a powerhouse of an actor and it was GREAT to see him get to stretch his legs in that episode. i loved seeing his dad and the restaurant just.... man i keep losing my mf'ing mind about the restaurant being named after him specifically bc of the scene of sam and ola cooking together. like. the restaurant was already cool and special, sam deciding to make this piece of his home in london, for himself and for other people, but seeing that just.... you get the sense this is something they'd done a million times together. and suddenly sam making a restaurant is a million times more meaningful, more personal. says a lot about what home means to him, what he remembers when he thinks about home, what he wanted to bring with him. and that it was named after his dad just........ [weeps into my hands, runs away into the woods]
(and you're right, too, re: racism. i also have some reservations about how that whole thing went down and was resolved, though i guess it's possible it could come up again. it felt very.... fast? it all felt very fast and glancing and not really. aware. of what it was engaging with and getting into, is the thing i keep coming back to. this show has a bit of a blindspot when it comes to race i think, and it doesn't feel like it's Aware Of What It's Doing which is...... an issue, imo.)
getting to see nate with his sister and niece was SPECTACULAR. oh my gd i want 100 more scenes with them. i loved seeing that so much. i'm still not....... wholly sure how i feel about the plotline he's got going w/ jade at the moment (i still feel like they didn't give us enough information about jade for this to really feel..... good, i guess. given how she's behaved in the past) but seeing him making good decisions for himself and being.... kinder? to himself? was fantastic. the scene of him looking in the mirror just. augh. man. i about cried at that, the hesitation, being at peace with himself rather than angry or disgusted. ugh. man. weeps.
(i have some questions as well about how that arc's progressing, nate's arc with himself, and how it seems to have happened like....... in isolation? i want to know what's going on with him. what prompted that shift. why is he seeing himself differently? is it entirely internal or did something happen that prompted it? idk it feels like there's a lot we don't know and i'd like to see more of that, yknow.)
the jamie stuff in there was GREAT. man. the parallels to the 2x08 scene. not wanting to be a prick. putting himself at a disadvantage vis a vis actually scoring/putting focus on his own name because that's what the team needs, That's Total FootballTM. the advancement of my eternal jamie-dani besties agenda. DELIGHT. simple delight. the powerpoint made me laugh and the bit about jamie made me laugh and also my heart feel all warm and full. his smile and laugh at the joke about his reality tv career was so real and honest i about died.

🙅‍♀️🔪🏅🤔
🙅‍♀️ What is one trope you refuse to ever write? idk if it's really a trope or a genre at this point, but i def refuse to go anywhere near omgeaverse. won't be me lmao 🔪 Fuck marry kill 3 tropes (asker’s choice of tropes). fuck enemies to lovers. marry found family. kill uhhhh idk 🏅 What is the fic you’re most proud of? the one i'm currently writing i'd have to say! it's been a ten year labor of love but i think it's truly gonna be my best work once all is said and done. 🤔 What’s one genre you’ve never written that you’d like to try? more or less a detective story. like it doesnt matter if you know who the killer is right away as a reader, i want the thrill of watching the protagonist lose their gd mind trying to solve the case. i do have one in the works that also doubles as a futuristic sci-fi, and once my current project is done, hopefully i can start working on it
thanks for the ask sev, ilu <3

I wanna hear your thoughts on Kaiba, because he seems to fit your type of dramatic asshole.
doing it in the format of the ask meme for a couple days ago :)
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang
hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff
(i once had to mediate a heated argument over if Kaiba is a slytherin or a ravenclaw. everyone involved was like 25-26. it was like watching tumblr irl.)
((anyway i only put people in ravenclaw if they're driven by the internal need to create/discover, and kaiba is wicked smart but driven by his need to spread the love of card games so he can beat more people at them.))
best quality: he loves his little bro, aaw. and just. the UNYIELDING dedication to card games. like Kaiba goes on to influence the world's culture so much that by 5Ds your social status is at least partly decided by dueling ability. also i really like that he is so in denial about magic and bieng the reincarnation of an ancient egyptian priest that he appears to be able to like.... just shrug off magic. like in DSOD he literally just decides the magical punishment shouldn't apply to him so it doesn't. he denies magic so hard he breaks the laws on destiny. screw the rules he has money
worst quality: kaiba is one of those characters who i really like in theory but when i was first watching the show in middle school, i just.... very frequently found what he was doing boring? XD like when he was running around doing completely batshit things, that was great, but a lot of his duels weren't that exciting? also every time he gets close to losing he acts shocked and offended and like. shut up seto you lose all the time. you lose at least as often as jounouchi pfft
ship them with: Atem
brotp them with: I enjoy when Kaiba is forced to awkwardly loom behind Yuugi-tachi while they try to do something together
needs to stay away from: Sugoroku lmao
misc. thoughts: Batshit things Kaiba has done that I love: organize a card tournament on top of a gd blimp and then when people started to get injured during the games, he refused to stop his tournament or land the blimp. DID pause the tournament briefly to give a speech about throwing away the sins of his father and then blow up an island. threaten to jump off a castle if he lost a card game (in fairness he also thought he'd lose his brother if he lost). literally had his soul trapped in a card after losing a game where his opponent LITERALLY read his mind and then still refused to believe in magic. sent an old man to the hospital over a card, which he then RIPPED UP. built an incredibly realistic hologram atem to duel against. tried to solve the millennium puzzle using robots in space (why in space??). built a machine so he could go into the afterlife specifically to play card games. at some point both Yuugi's friends and Mokuba were kidnapped Malik and Atem & Kaiba had to team up to go find them and I don't remember all the details, Kaiba spent the whole spewing completely maladjusted things like "when can we duel, yuugi" and then when they ended up in a game where the losers would fall to their death kaiba was like GOOD, JUST HOW I LIKE IT.
anyway i'd skip most of his duels on a rewatch but the things we was doing in between.... (chef's kiss)

I just finished watching The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and I have to say I absolutely loved it. I have so many favorite characters and I can't pick one over the other so I'll just categorize based on why I love them so much. Here's a list in no particular order that I'll try to keep fairly spoiler free by avoiding specific details:
SkekMal(the Hunter) the coolest gd character holy crap I wish we got to see more of him. I don't really know why I'm so obsessed with him but he is seriously badass. If there was a mini series or even just a 20 minute video about his hunts and travels and how often he returns to the castle for rejuvenation(if at all) I'd lose my mind if be so happy.
SkekSil(the Chamberlain) honestly just the most interesting/intriguing character. He's definitly one of the most intelligent of the Skeksis(tbh I'd say his ability to manipulate and plan out everything he needs to happen to get to the place he wants to be holds more weight than the scientist being about to build machines but I digress) and his character was fleshed out so much more than the seemingly sniveling Skeksis of the original movie, though I could be mis-remembering since I haven't seen the movie for years.
Deet, the sweetest/most tragic character I won't go in to detail for those that either haven't seen, or haven't finished the series yet but what she does/takes on to protect her friends and all Gelfling is heart breaking. I love her so much and how much she cares for the others. She's such a kind brave soul and I hope where things left off isn't how she remains forever, or at least she is able to reign in and control what affects her.
Hup, the most entertaining character that we did not get to see enough of/wasn't fleshed out enough for my liking. He is yet another brave soul and how quickly he comes to care for and protect Deet just shows that he will make an incredible paladin and will be a truly valuable person in the battle to come. Order unfortunate that he eat pretty much just the "small spunky sidekick character" and not much else.
Anyways The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is great and I beg of you to watch it and leave a positive review if you haven't already cause a possible second season can only happen if the first one does well enough!
