the more I think about it the more I'm convinced that the Fraggle Rock reboot should've operated very similarly to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

by that I mean: same Universe, different time period/premise. it makes the tonal difference between the TDC movie and the series much less jarring, because, like... they're Meant to be different. different media structure, different plot, cast of characters, presentation style, visual aesthetic... it makes comparing the pieces of media less important, because I can focus on what makes them good in different ways without it saying anything about their respective quality

one of my biggest grievances with the Fraggle Rock reboot is that it's a hard reset. complete memory wipe for all characters (afaik), starting totally from scratch. it really feels like it cheapens all the overarching development and truly beautiful moments all the original show had. (especially the finale!)

and honestly, I think my dream for a modern Fraggle Rock show would be a continuation piece set in the future, where the Fraggle 5 are like... Old People Fraggles now and occupy similar roles to Uncle Matt, the World's Oldest and the Storyteller and such. and they could be like, the lesson-givers to a younger generation of cute, new Fraggle characters who would be the center of the show. kind of like what they had going on at the end of MLP: FIM

this is just my 'I want to see the Fraggle 5 as funny weird haggard old people' agenda at work but I think it would be adorable, and would make the difference between them and their original puppeteers less weird and dissonant. they wouldn't have to struggle so hard to make them feel like The Same Characters and inevitably feel off and awkward, because they could completely reinvent the characters from a new life perspective, and incoorperate parts of their character growth that were explored in the OG series for continuity
