Never forgetting the fact that Stephen Maturin is my 78-year-old grandfather's blorbo. He's read ALL but one of the Aubreyad. The movie adaptation is one of his, if not his most, favorite movies of all time. Whenever he brings it up, he talks about how Maturin is "the most interesting character in all of fiction" and lists stuff about the man that he finds interesting - HE DOES NOT USUALLY GO ON RANTS LIKE THIS. The highest praise I have ever heard from him has been for Dr. Stephen Maturin and I think it's hilarious

I think an underrated aspect of Separation Arc and why it works so well is that once Mob finally stands up for himself and stops going to work, we think we can expect the following to happen:

Reigen quickly flounders at work but stubbornly denies he's incapable without Mob's help

Reigen eventually runs into a client who truly needs the help of psychic powers (e.g. the client is haunted by an evil spirit who cannot be exorcised with salt)

Reigen realizes that he truly needs Mob to not be seen as a fraud and that he shouldn't have taken him for granted

Reigen seeks out Mob and apologizes, Mob accepts his apology and agrees to work for him again

Except... that's not what happens. Reigen does get upset and lonely without Mob, but his business runs fine—in fact, Reigen's own ambition and smart thinking actually allow him to find greater success as a psychic. The only reason Reigen's public downfall even happens is because he was maliciously tricked by Jodo, he'd figured out on his own that the kid wasn't possessed! This and the fact that Jodo is seeking petty revenge for Reigen "humiliating" him (when Reigen actually saved his life no less) really makes us feel like Reigen's public mockery is unfair and unjustified... even though we've always known from the beginning that Reigen is a fraud.

Isn't that a strange turn of events?

Then we get to the press conference. It's possible that even if Mob hadn't helped him at the end, Reigen could've still managed to salvage some of his public image. He was calmly answering people's questions and answering truthfully, pointing out that they had no evidence he was a fraud and that no one had ever had an issue with his work before the show. But all of that stops mattering to Reigen when he realizes that despite all his efforts from childhood, he's still just a lonely, lonely man who has never had any idea what he wants to do in life. The only reason he kept running his psychic business in the first place was because Mob showed up in his dull life and brightened it up with his vivid color.

It is finally here, after all this time we've been spending with Reigen, that we both figure out the truth: Reigen needs Mob not because of his powers, but because Mob is his friend and inspires him to be better. And this full understanding of Reigen's complex character and deep connection with Mob is what hits all of us so hard in this episode, it's so painfully human and real and we would not have gotten all of this had the story just played out as expected.

Thus culminates the genius subversions of Separation Arc: despite having the world's attention all focused on him, Reigen only makes one honest apology to one boy. This boy might not even watching this at all—if he is, he's probably watching this with spiteful bitterness—but it's still important that this boy knows...

something i don’t see talked about in the system community enough are the dissociative shutdowns.

when you’re in a system, you know what it feels like to not have control over your body because somebody else does. so, when you’re supposed to be controlling the body and, when life hits the fan, suddenly it won’t do anything you want it to do, it’s terrifying.

the world feels crushing yet far away at the same time. your eyes are looking around, but they’re not truly seeing. you can hear someone talking, and you can’t respond— and if you are, the words falling off your lips are foreign and feel numb on your tongue.

when you’re in that state you feel nothing. you don’t notice your own actions (if you can even muster any), you don’t register touch or pain, you don’t feel cold, you don’t feel heat.

hours pass. maybe it’s only minutes? it’s impossible to tell. you’re frozen in time and space but everything is still moving on around you.

then all the sudden it’s over. at least it seems over. something still feels… wrong. but there’s no time to address that.

as time goes on, it turns out that you never really circle back to why that happened. until it happens again. then you ignore it. the cycle continues.

Been battling with friggin’ Webtoon for FOUR DAYS over Ranma’s tits.

Got an episode pulled because the black censor bar I used was insufficient. So I threw a black box over Ranma altogether and nope, still not good enough. Had to be either a crop or put something “natural” for the environment in the panel, like foliage, hair, or clothing.

So now Ranma gets a snarky T-shirt to wear that will get progressively snarkier every time it reappears in the comic (only on Webtoon, we still get to have fun here on Tumblr, Tapas, and Patreon).

I do love me some malicious compliance.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built & A Prayer for the Crown-Shy, Becky Chambers - sci-fi, lgbtq, novella duology. utopian future post-robots. heart-warming messages/commentary with plenty of robot-companion fun.

Know My Name, Chanel Miller - memoir. very important read.

In The Dream House, Carmen Maria Machado - memoir. a beautifully and uniquely crafted perspective on abusive lesbian relationships.

A Strange & Stubborn Endurance, Foz Meadows - (tw: early on-page rape) fantasy, lgbtq. this book was a much needed comfort during a very hard time. despite that, the m/m romance and character arcs were well-done and satisfying. the tw section made for a bumpy start, but I enjoyed the rest without a hitch.

* The Jasmine Throne, Tasha Suri - fantasy, lgbtq, magic. w/w romance between someone that should be dead and the rightful heir to a throne. really lovely world-building, characters, and angst. the final book in the trilogy is sitting on my table staring me down as we speak (and will likely make this a favorite series).

* The Obsidian Tower (* entire trilogy), Melissa Caruso - fantasy, magic, lgbtq. this is my favorite series so far and it's completely based on personal preference - epitome of "if I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more". the characters, the world, the magical elements, everything hit exactly right FOR ME.

Angles Before Man, Rafael Nicolas - mythology retelling, lgbtq. this is an interesting one: the story of lucifer with a fresh new perspective. i need to buy and annotate this badly.

Finding Me, Viola Davis - memoir. beautifully written, beautifully narrated, and another important read.

* The Mask of Mirrors (* entire trilogy, but especially *Liar's Knot), M. A. Carrick - epic fantasy, magic, lgbtq. where do I even start. i love these bitches like family.

Educated, Tara Westover - memoir. wild ride.

I'm Glad My Mom Died, Jennette McCurdy - memoir. this one's pretty self-explanatory.

* Chain-Gang All-Stars, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah - the last two lines of this book killed me on the spot. such an important and impactful read.

A Memory Called Empire, Arkady Martine - scifi, space opera, lgbtq. amazing premise, and very memorable first book. curious what the rest of the duology will bring.

All of Us Villains & All of Our Demise, Foody & Herman - YA, magic, fantasy. just a really fun and unique tournament duology. the second book especially ate for me ('cause my fav wishful pairing got together and I love being insane and correct).

* Thistlefoot, GennaRose Nethercott - mythology, magical realism, lgbtq. book about a living chicken house with hard-hitting commentary on the importance of bearing witness.

Wings of Fire, Tui T. Sutherland - MG, fantasy, dragons. just a precious little series that I can always trust to be a good time.

Spin of Fate, A. A. Vora - fantasy, YA, future lgbtq hinted. loved the captivating world, magic, and interesting main characters. dying for the next book.

Strange the Dreamer, Laini Taylor - fantasy (duology), magic. first book was immersive, dreamy, and highly engaging. i wish the second book was granted more time + pages/another book to do everything and everyone justice.

The Bullet Swallower, Elizabeth Gonzalez James - historical fiction, magical realism. the first historical fiction to actually make me want to try the genre again.

Jades phone was set up and she was standing in front of me with a sly smirk on her face. I didn’t know what she was up too but it was probably something stupid or scary. Or both.

I never know what she plans so I was a little nervous. She went over to her phone and pressed record. She went up to me and told me to raise my left hand, so I hesitantly did. Then. She told me to raise my right hand up in the air. She then told me to cross them. I looked at her like “what the actual fuck?” But I did it anyway.

She put her hands down quickly and slammed me against the wall. She put one of her hand on top of mine and her other hand went on my waist.

I was so surprised I squealed so loud and she starting laughing. She started walking away to press the stop recording button on her pear phone and I ran and jumped on her back.

We both were a laughing mess and she threw me on the couch and started tickling me. I was laughing so hard that I thought I was gonna piss my pants. I told her that and she stopped as she smiled down at me with pure love.

“I love you y/n/n.” Jade said softly to you which she only reserves for you and for you only. “And I love you too baby”. You said lovingly to her.

I actually can’t believe this has to be put into words but considering I’ve seen MULTIPLE people talking about this on Twitter, I just need to vent: People calling Alicent a hypocrite for fucking Criston Cole — are we actually watching the same show or are y’all just fucking dumb? 😭

Let’s recap, shall we? First of all, Alicent wasn’t upset at Rhaenyra for having sex with Criston. Rather, she was furious that Rhaenyra, as heir to the throne, was caught in a pleasure house with her uncle. Having premarital sex in that time period? As heir to the throne, no less?? Y’all love to spin Alicent as this evil mastermind, when in reality, she was just concerned about what the consequences would’ve been had the rumors been true. Rhaenyra, at the end of the day, is a girl in a deeply misogynistic society. What do you think would’ve happened to her if the rumor spread beyond the castle walls? Jesus, look at what is STILL being said to women in the 21st century who have sex. Like, genuinely, you think Rhaenyra would’ve gotten off scot free if the rumors weren’t immediately contained? Alicent was right to be furious - she only had Rhaenyra’s best interests at heart.

And let me remind you all that Rhaenyra lies to Alicent’s face, going so far as to swear on her dead mother. Do I blame Rhaenyra for lying? No. But there are repercussions for her actions that end up negatively affecting Alicent.

Alicent goes to Viserys and vouches for Rhaenyra’s maidenhood. As a result, Otto is removed as Hand and has to leave King’s Landing — which, to be fair, is his own damn fault. You will never, and I mean NEVER, see me defending that man. But that leaves Alicent without her father and with no remaining allies. Now, she’s completely alone, with her former best friend who won’t talk to her and this nasty old man who she has to call her husband.

So all this passes, and Alicent decides to question Criston about Rhaenyra’s whereabouts, just for her own peace of mind. If Rhaenyra really was telling the truth, then at least she did the right thing, and her father got what he deserved. But surprise surprise - Rhaenyra was lying, because she had had sex with Criston that night. Alicent really defended Rhaenyra to the king, losing her father as a result, and Rhaenyra had been lying the whole time. From her point of view, how are you not furious? I would be so pissed off if I were in her shoes.

With all this being said, how is ALICENT the hypocrite? Viserys is dead - and even if he was still alive & kicking, she did her fucking duty. She gave birth to the son he so desperately wanted, only for Viserys to completely ignore him & the rest of her children! God forbid she have a little fun for once in her fucking life!!

I honestly don’t understand where the discourse is coming from. If y’all wanna call Criston the hypocrite, I’ll be right there with you! But Alicent? Alicent?? Where is the logic, I don’t understand 😭

Status Updateee

Time's been a weeeird thing for me these past few years. Since my memory's kinda meh, I'm not 100% sure how the timeline of this project has gone but I think it's been something like this:

2020 - decided to revamp WH, though at some point this became a complete reboot

2021 - 2022 ish - started working on writing reboot, finished maybe 2/3rds of "Part 01"

2023 - to be quite honest, don't think I wrote anything for THV due to a lot of things going on

2024 - decided to start over again, made lots of major changes to characters and plot stuff, finally started writing from scratch in March (?)

As of last weekend, I finally finished a draft of the first five chapters that consist of what I now call the "pilot episode" (aka the prologue section)! It's not much, and I still need to go back and change some things that aren't applicable anymore, but I'm way happier with these few chapters than I was with my first attempt at THV.

Thanks for your patience, everyone. Now I'm moving onto Season 1!

yes, i was reading TOG back when it originally came out, and ACOTAR too! I used my main back then and tragically used no tagging system lmao. i also had an ACOTAR aesthetic sideblog for a short period of time but ultimately deleted it. I survived the heir of fire into queen of shadows hiatus (a badge i wear with honor). rest under a read more because i like to talk a lot

the caveat though is that i was 12-13 years old LMAO (remember folks, TOG was originally YA - I was the target audience up until QOS/EOS). so my memory of the fandom is kind of hazy but the discourse and ship ways were a very real thing back then too, i just didn’t spend a ton of time on them because i was like 12 and didn’t care that much. i don’t remember there being as many death threats and anonymous troll blogs, but back then on tumblr you’d just make a call out on your blog and tag the person you wanted to fight with (this was pre-direct messaging on tumblr! and discord).

i shipped rowan and aelin from HOF, yes! it was super clear to me that they were going to be endgame, even though it broke my doraelin heart. i liked chaol and chaolaena fine but dorian. dorian is still one of my favorite SJM characters to this day. i also REALLY liked malide (manon x elide) but once lorcan became a MC i realized there was zero chance of that happening in canon and that we were getting elorcan💔(though don’t get me wrong i like elorcan!)

back then the TOG fandom was killer, there were a ton of active people, artists, and editors making mood boards and things. and lots of infighting of course. it’s really pretty quiet now, all things considered

i read the first ACOTAR right when it came out while waiting for QOS, like most SJM fans did at the time. we were desperate for any clues/hints for TOG (even though there was no indication the series were connected). but ACOTAR didn’t really have a prolific fan base until ACOMAF, and then it exploded with the first wave of feysand girlies for a while at least. most original fans have dropped off since ACOWAR unfortunately. I did too actually. ACOWAR didn’t have a super great reception from what i remember (looking back it was kind of similar to the reception that HOFAS got lmao, but on the nicer end). and by ACOFAS a lot of people were frustrated by the lack of forward momentum in the story. also people wanted KOA at that point and were like “fuck this noise” lmfao.

i didn’t ship feysand until ACOMAF and actually was super mad at first because I liked feylin in ACOTAR (and I still like Tamlin! he’s an interesting character!!) but it grew on me a lot. i actually thought like a bunch of people that the reason rhys was surprised at the end of acotar was because he sensed feyre was pregnant lmao. i casually shipped moriel too like most people at that point. i don’t remember having a strong opinion on nessian, but i did ship elucien!! there also was definitely drama over the 180 from feylin to feysand (no new points have been made since acomaf came out, it’s a dead horse). i don’t remember any ship wars when only the first ACOTAR book was out, but it wasn’t super popular on here initially so idk. there def were people into rhysand but most TOG people were like “….why does he look like maeve??”

take all this as a caveat as my memory of the fandom spaces i was privy too though! my words are not word of god. i was a pretty casual fan all things considered and super young so i wasn’t in the thick of it, i was there for vibes and because no one i knew IRL was reading TOG or ACOTAR so i wanted people to talk to about them

i relistened to all of the acotar books last fall when a good college friend got into them and i was like “oh!! i remember those books!!” and then listened to ACOSF for the first time. and then i read all of CC and was super obsessed, and finally made a sideblog so i didn’t piss off my mutuals on my main! which brings us to present day

p.s. i dug out my old copies that i had from the TOG series from under my bed in my childhood bedroom while home on holiday. 13yo jade is astounded that these are worth so much money now - and she thought they were popular 10 years ago!! i got TOD from the library because i was broke when it came out and didn’t like that it didn’t match the others the same way. and i didn’t buy KOA with the original color when it came out because i didn’t like that it was that weird yellow color :( i’ve also started rereading QoS, I haven’t reread it since it came out (no joke).

LOL probably! I’m already heavily considering doing a fic for that Hunger Games AU I’ve done some art for. But I’m not so sure how just “a re-telling of those books but make it bkdk” would do? Like it’s one thing to draw a few scenes but another to write out a whole fic for that sorta thing I dunno…
