i’m sorry i’m still thinking about that erha extra that’s like yeah if chu wanning and mo ran were born in the republican era they’d participate in the revolution and live happily ever after :) literally who are you talking about right now. chu “questions authority” wanning and mo “authority questions him” ran would make it through one struggle session, maybe two, before one of them was like hey stop it i can vouch for this person, at which point everyone would be like hey aren’t you from a brothel/monastery and also aren’t you a queer and an intellectual (derogatory) these are very very suspect things. and then the other one would kill everyone there on instinct and they’d have to take new identities and charter a boat to hong kong. i know this is what would happen because that’s point for point how it went down in Xianxia World. in fact i can’t think of any two characters more poorly-suited to see 1966
#and like i understand the instinct#i’ve seen the relevant movies they’re very cool#but like just in terms of internal consistency. come on.#ryddles

I’ve officially seen every twilight movie
As much as people make fun of it they’re not objectively bad movies
However
I didn’t love it
Spoilers:
I don’t like the two love interests, I never liked Edward’s personality and as much as Jacob’s started out great it just went downhill from when he joined the wolf pack. I also hate how they “fixed” the love triangle by making Jacob imprint on a fucking infant. I guess Edward and Bella’s relationship was stable by the end of it but the movies didn’t do a great job at showing their actual emotional connection and just put emphasis on how often they kiss and fuck and as much as Bella and Jacob had such a good dynamic in the second movie it just wasn’t it bc at that point Bella was already set on Edward even if she did end up loving Jacob as well
There were like three major female characters and one was the protag so it felt very…. Idk how to describe it but yk what I mean
However I did love Bella and Alice’s relationship and I LOVE how they fleshed out Rosalie’s character and tbh she might be one of my favorite characters in the whole thing. As much as she didn’t like Bella at first she’s still a girls girl when it comes down to it and I love that she a, was willing to go against the family if there was even a little doubt that Bella wanted to become a vampire and b, DID go against the family when she said she wanted to keep the baby. If I go through with reading the books it might just be to see how fleshed out her character really is because oh boy the development in this one
I also just generally love the concept of vampires and where wolves and I feel like the movies really didn’t do it justice, like there could have been so much world building potential to be fleshed out and really make it feel like a real world, but other than when Bella was researching vampires at the start, it was only touched upon when immediately relevant and I could tell that it only skimmed the surface of what it *could* be and it was really disappointing when they wasted all of that potential
In the last movie I LOVED the sequence where Alice was showing the leader guy the battle sequence, it was such great execution and absolutely amazing storytelling and was such a shock when they revealed that none of that battle happened and the whole thing was a vision being shared, that one was something that I really really enjoyed especially going into these movies basically blind, I was shocked when I thought carlac died and then 100x more shocked when it turned out actually none of that happened and it was honestly great
I thought it was cool when Bella figured out how to harness her powers and I liked that the child with a name I will not say or type isn’t the only one of her kind, I like that it’s something that (to some) is a known reality and not necessarily a once in a lifetime occurrence. I also like how yes the vampires with the abilities are more powerful than those without, it doesn’t take away from the fact that even without special abilities a vampire is still a vampire and is very strong and fast and all the things and can possibly take on one with a power
Tldr: the movies weren’t great and there are enough things that I disliked that I wouldn’t watch them again however due to the potential of the characters and worldbuilding I might consider reading the books since my mom already owns all of them

Chapter 144 thoughts!
So they’re cutting ahead again, and I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, we’re still building on Ruby’s character arc regarding her feelings for Gorou, so it makes sense.
But on the other hand, the implication that they’re doing the entire movie chronologically means that Hikaru and Ai’s part of the movie together is over, which is ludicrous to me because Aqua’s “ultimate revenge play” fantasy that he’s been coming up with since childhood has ultimately just been “the Uwuification of Hikaru Kamiki”
I’m not too phased because I still think we’re going to return to it, Frill was confident from script alone that Aqua was trying to kill his father, and there was an emphasis placed on Ai denying Hikaru. I’m not sure why it hasn’t happened from a watsonian perspective (maybe hospital availability pushing those scenes up?) but from a doyalist perspective I could see it being the climax of Ruby’s character arc which she isn’t ready for.
It’s another one of those “I can’t really judge it until I’ve seen the rest of the arc” things so I’ll try to just judge it for what is is right now.
Melt looks so good as Gorou! I didn’t think much about the casting when it was announced but he’s really bringing the role to life.
Ruby chiming in to essentially go “no he wouldn’t fucking say that” is both funny and indicative to the entitled perception and attachment she feels to him. It specifically gives me a lighter version of Nino talking about Ai
I like how Melt talks about understanding Gorou here. He really is an understanding and empathic person and it shines through in his acting style. Him calling the role “cool” is cute to me.
Ruby really gets mean here in a way that almost comes off as out of character. It reads to me like her obsession is growing more toxic, or maybe some lingering cruelty from how she was behaving before, but it is a little jarring.
Melt’s interpretation of Gorou is spot on to me, he understands Gorou’s subtly and respect better than even Ruby does. (Though @aihoshiino pointed out to me that Gorou is implied by the anime and the chapter where his corpse is found to have had his keychain out the whole time in front of Ai. Still, in terms of his professionalism and hiding that he’s a fan Melt gets it)
It makes me wonder what his information is. He doesn’t know Gorou’s name (which makes sense since Gorou can’t legally consent to his name being used) but he knows his history with Sarina enough to guess she gave him the pin.
Also this dude! Glad to see him
The pin’s relevance to her turnaround feels very rooted in sentimentality. I really like the concept of it, but it feels a bit dangerously close to Comedy!Ruby from the Hikaru Ai scenes. I think I like it more here though, as it feels more in character and purposeful.
Crow girl in the tree like a creature is healing me tbh. I know a lot of people are skeptical of her and the supernatural element her presence enforces, but I’ve always found her so interesting and fun and I’m happy to see her again.
Thank you for asking about how she gets around, that’s been one of the goofy questions the server has been mulling over for a while now lol
Interesting that this location seems significant to her, considering her first appearance here, as well as the fact that her two reincarnation targets where here when they died. Her implying there may be more special people is interesting. I wonder if any more will come into the story, though part of me doubts it.
This might imply characters we’ve met have god attachments without even knowing it. Simple guess here would be Ai, there’s precedence for her to be connected to the “God of Entertainment.” Though even if she was, I’m sure what kind of relevancy that would have -if any- considering she is dead and confirmed never coming back, but it’s interesting to think about.
See? She’s such a goofball! Between this and Aqua bullying her into being an actor, she’s been a strong comedic pillar in this arc.
All in all, a pretty decent chapter, kinda annoying in its placement, but much better than having the skip week after last chapter.

my ideal batfam hcs but i suck at hcs :3
Dick
he’s fifteen, the eldest kid in the batfamily
his parents died when he was 8 and a half,
the half is important because i’ve always thought of Dick being a sassy child. like if asked what his name is he will CONFIDENTLY say ‘it’s *Richard*. R-I-C-H-A-R-D. but my parents call me Dick :D’
so therefore if asked his age, if he thinks it relevant, he’ll tack on an ‘and a half!’ to the end of it or ask his parents for a more precise fraction.
“how long until my birthday, dad?”
“five months.”
“…can you put that into the halves-thingy, please?”
that was when he was younger, of course. he’s old enough to put it into fractions himself now
being a entertainer and all he’s got to be charismatic but a lot of it is natural for him.
adults find his quips endearing and his habits loveable
adored all around!!
he brought Barbara home once and Bruce was freaking out to you because that’s his (the Batman’s) best friend’s daughter!!!
he was very nice to her and Dick seemed happy that neither of you made any offhand comments about her
that was three years ago. they’re still going strong
Kate
I’ll be real, i don’t know much about her
most of this is probably ooc…
she’s fourteen, younger than Dick by I think seven months?
i think you and Bruce would have adopted her when she was older than Dick, like eleven or so
she’s really chill
she balances out Dick’s louder side, and she’s a good listener when Dick wants to talk
i hc her as autistic here but maybe im projecting
she doesn’t directly interact with a lot of family events and just watches from the sidelines because she’ll get stressed out if thrown into them
i also think she loves witchy things. but not for the witchy pagan side of it. just because the crystals are shiny and the jewelry is cool
(me projecting)
i think she’s like the super cool super hot lesbian at school. like she skates to school and listens to paramore and tv girl and knows a lot about bugs (not enough to be seen as a nerd, but enough to be cool)
Bruce takes her to get her hair dyed and to trim up her fuzz? buzz cut side? every month
it’s like a daddy daughter bonding moment. they get ice cream before and then watch a movie after
Bruce has defo invited you but you declined, because it’s their special time! you don’t get that a lot in a family of ten
Steph
another girly I don’t know a lot about…
probably ooc too :(
i think you and Bruce adopt her when she’s also eleven and she’s currently twelve. so in some ways she’s still settling in
I think she has her fair share of behavioural issues for a kid her age, but not to the point where her future seems worrying
just enough to warrant behavioral therapy
which she loves btw. her therapist has hotwheels and its the BEST
(her words, not mine)
she’s calmed down a ton and her therapist seems impressed with her progress
like, she doesn’t throw tantrums anymore, she doesn’t hit, she doesn’t say words she knows she isn’t supposed to (much) and she gets along a lot better with her siblings
i hc her with adhd
i also think she really likes sharks
she has a shark tooth necklace she found on the Gotham beach (how? you’ll never know)
Cass
Cassie is ten, adopted at eight
she’s autistic and she has selective mutism
shes not mute. she can hold a conversation within the family just fine at home but she just can't talk a lot of the time outside the house :(
she loves being babied
like she adores cuddles and hugs and she’s pretty clingy
like when she started second grade she cried because she didn’t want you to leave you alone :(
she's going to therapy and she got diagnosed with selective mutism and separation anxiety, but she’s doing better and rarely ever gets upset over her anxiety
we're still working on the selective mutism tho
Jason
he’s also ten (he’s four months younger than Cass and HATES it) but got adopted when he was four
he’s also a grade below cass since he was born on the cut. he’s really salty about it and hates whenever someone teases him about it
this is the curly haired, big smiled little baby boo boo that a bunch of people voted to kill a few decades ago
he's sweet and charming with strangers but easily riled up at home
always down for a fight, though he’s easy to fling like a bag of rice (which Dick LOVES doing)
he has small dog syndrome when he gets too much sugar in his system.
also he plays CoD on Dick’s ps5
he sucks at it and calls everyone all the curse words he knows
(damn, crap, and ‘The F-One’)
Dick records it and posts it on his private story
Tim
he got adopted at five and is nine years old now
if asked, he says ‘i’m nine years, seven months, two weeks and three days old. and seventeen hours, fourteen minutes, thirty-two seconds and counting 🤓'
and he’s ALWAYS right to the dot
like what...
basically young sheldon (i’ve never watched the show, this is all from speculation and what my friends have told me about it)
he’s sleep deprived
no matter what you do… melentonin, reduced lights, less sugar, less screen time, reading to him, white noise… it never works. he’s perpetually tired
(in reality it’s a flashlight he keeps hidden in his bedroom drawer and a good book from his bookshelf that keep him up but he’ll never admit that)
he has a reading/writing level of a senior in high school at nine years old because of all the books he reads
Bruce is SO proud of him
he’s already planning for tim’s college career
Duke
he’s eight and just got adopted
he’s everyone’s baby brother despite Damian being the youngest
he still has a baby face too!!!
Dick loves taking silly photos of him or letting him play games on his pc
Tim and Duke share a room because Duke’s afraid of the dark and he doesn’t like sleeping alone
it’s a win win for the both of them since Tim reads Duke to sleep when he can’t fall asleep and Duke lies to their parents if they ask what Tim was doing all night
(‘Duke, what was Tim doing last night? I heard him shuffling…’
‘he was asleep, dad! he just had to get some water. he woke me up on accident.’)
cue cartoony wink to the camera
Daimain
Talia abandoned him to the two of you when he was three
he didn’t fully grow into the role of an assassin, but it still happened
he’s six now and his upbringing is apparent
he’s blunt and cold (not unlike his father) and sneers easily
let me repeat: he is SIX
he roasts everyone in the house like there’s no tomorrow
indecisive about an outfit? just ask him
if he uses more than three bad describing words, it’s best if you change
under three means its good
none means he likes it
Bruce always gets a kick out of seeing everyone get stunned to silence by a sharp-tongued six year old until that tongue is turned on him
i swear he just sits there like 😲while damian is telling him that his shoes are creased, his hair is filthy, and that he has no self respect
(dick records all of these encounters, but you have him under oath to not post them under ANY circumstances)

Lady in Hollywood who is very progressive and has a murky sexuality writing here to say I’m not offended at your posts about Kaia. You’re not punching down but bringing nuance and observation to a topic. You’re not saying she has to pick a gender or that bisexuality does not exist. You’re singling out one person who has decided to live a public life in front of the paparazzi but never gets too deep into anything, including her book club which explores queer topics. I’m not saying anyone, including Kaia, has to explain everything but the way she moves in the world publicly makes it hard not to be curious about seeming incongruences.
I out myself as someone in the industry who is liberal bc I have a unique lived experience with this. Almost all of my peers and friends in Hollywood have liberal view points, especially socially, but we find ourselves at a few moments questioning some people’s motives. Hollywood is a diverse (but sadly and too often) in a performative way at this moment and is looking to check boxes. If not enough people of color are in a movie, it’s a bad look. Same with story lines regarding only heterosexual plot lines. There’s also dialogues about who should play or not play gay characters. I’m all for things moving in this direction, but the execution is really messy at times. It’s hard to get roles under any circumstances, and a lot of people on subconscious levels feel threatened that they may not be special if they’re white/cis/straight. I know a lot of people out their sexualities or gender who are sincere and use it to their advantage business wise, and good for them. Like this is the moment and go and get it! I’m not erasing them. I cheerlead them. But then there’s a few others out there where my friends and I heavily question. For instance, I knew a guy in comedy who said he was a bisexual and constantly uses his bisexuality in his comedy act. The thing is, nobody has seen him date anyone but beautiful brunette women. It’s not that he can’t also be into men and just happens to luck out more with women, but he really doesn’t seem into men so it’s given a few of us pause. He’s also not a great dude (manipulative and self serving to say the least) so that does shade why we question him, but there’s countless other examples of people who do this regarding being queer and/or nonbinary. My most liberal friends who are not necessarily straight or cis question people on occasion bc they aren’t lemmings who blindly support weird energies. But it has to happen behind closed doors bc you look like a dick if you question it. Hell, you could get canceled. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t absolutely happen (people faking or exaggerating their sexuality for profession gain). Everyone wants to be chosen so they have to put their most unique self out there to stand out. Some people 100% run with false stories to get ahead.
I have a murky sexuality as I mentioned. I identify as straight, but I’m not the straightest straight girl to walk the earth. There is a fluidity to me. I’ve rarely acted on it bc it is not that deep for me. Maybe one day that will change- I’m not afraid of it. But it’s not something I put out there because as I said, it is not that deep. It feels slimy to exploit it based on how I live my life. I like dudes. I date dudes. I prefer dudes across the board. I COULD claim queerness or fluidity bc I probably *technically* am, but I don’t live my life that way (and haven’t for YEARS) despite that it is in me to be into women. It just almost never happens and hasn’t for a while, so it’s genuinely not a big part of my life. Why would I run with that? Maybe if I was insecure I would, but I’m cool standing out for other reasons that are more relevant to my day to day life.
Everyone’s sexuality is their own. Everyone has nuance. I think when we’re young we’re figuring it out. We’re polishing what works for us, what’s a permanent fixture for us, if there are patterns etc. I’m glad I wasn’t famous at 20 bc I would have likely put myself in all types of categories and vibes that don’t represent my fully cooked self. I have no idea what Kaia’s deal is, but there’s something off. At times it seems painfully obvious she’s more into women, so the fact that she only dates men (and not like, undiscovered working actors or an entertainment lawyer nobody in the public knows by name but only men the tabloids 🙄) is certainly a confounding choice. That said, I have also mentally put her in the queerbaiting category too. I waffle with those two options to be frank. It’s not my business and I hope she’s living her best life and all, but there’s smoke and I can’t figure out where the fire is. And again, I’m a straight lady who’s played with some boobies so of all people I understand confusing sexualities! I get mad when ppl act like bisexuality or fluidity can’t be a thing. But humans are observant and it’s okay to question the reality of something. Hollywood actors constantly lie/hide/deflect about their real life. Every single one of them! It’s not even always nefarious bc many have valid reasons to play the smoke in mirrors game, so it’s dumb to assume everything is at face value. Kaia comes from a media savvy family and has an unusual amount of contracts with different management and PR firms (from what I understand). Her whole brand is orchestrated, 50% of it being styled like her more famous mom. I don’t know what her personal life is like and to be frank, I largely don’t care. But I have clocked inconsistencies of things not adding up bc I have a brain and have learned in therapy to trust that my instincts are good. I don’t know what is what but if my alarm bells are going off something is off, even if I can’t guess accurately what it is.
Dialogues are healthy. They provide nuance. They let people blow off steam instead of bottling it in. They encourage critical thinking. Yes, it’s dicey to do that about an individual but also…she chose to live a very high profile life. You didn’t name call. You didn’t make a comment that was meant for all bisexuals. You were talking about one self proclaimed queer woman who has an energy in general that doesn’t match her public image (not just limited to her sexuality). Just because you don’t automatically fall in uniform with popular mindsets by questioning who she really is doesn’t make you bigoted- it makes you a curious human.
Nuance is important. Not all who question are haters.
Sincerely,
A Very Liberal Straight Lady Who Has Definitely Kissed A Lot of Women

have anyone here (or even you Nat) watched stars at noon… idc if it’s bad i just wanna see joe being naked…. can someone tell me where u can watch it… :((
it wasn’t bad! I watched it. It wasn’t the greatest movie I’ve ever seen but it was beautifully filmed and I liked the story and thought they’d adapted the book - which I also liked - well. When I read the major changes they’d made to the source material, I’d not been sure they’d work, but I actually felt they really did. The changes made what is actually a very dated Cold War era story into something that is relevant to today, and I liked that. I felt like it was very clearly told by a woman, which was one of the things that actually isn’t great about the book because it’s from a woman’s perspective but it’s one of those books where you can tell a man wrote it lol and this movie you can tell a woman made it. The infamous “suck me” line (which as we discussed was clearly Claire translating directly from the French and not realizing that it doesn’t mean that in English lmao) was not actually that bad like in the context of the whole movie. I kinda get why everyone felt too awkward to tell her it won’t work because it’s… a very good movie and she made a lot of very good choices. I also do understand why it won Cannes although I still don’t think it would’ve if she hadn’t pretended it’s gonna be her last movie. It isn’t that bad because the dialogue is a bit awkward because their relationship is a bit awkward because… she’s a hooker right like and it’s not a Pretty Woman sort of storyline. I do wish they’d kept the original ending of the book because I think that ending is very cool but overall like… solid choices, solid movie. I enjoyed it.
As for where you can watch it, depending on territories it’s on Disney+ (it was for me, or Hulu if you have that but where I live they’re one thing) or you can rent it on Apple or Google or I think Prime (learned that from googling it just now) or you can pirate it I would think quite easily because it’s available on several online platforms as I’ve just said.
Let me know what you thought.

your san’s fs reading was so good and seemed pretty accurate along with other readings I’ve seen of him. Out of all the readings I think the main similarities each one has are: probably younger; I don’t want to say they have a low self esteem but they don’t seem to be at their best right now but it’s more of a transformative state which as you say it’s normal they’re young but I think it fits as well with his ideal type too, someone that he can help emotionally like any cancer man ; very likely to be working in some kind of entertainment ( a lot of readers got this energy) some didn’t get exactly an idol but it’s someone that at least is or is trying to pursue a career doing something in there. Sweet very cute energy, probably has cute features (kind of giving BP Jennie for reference) and San would probably feel attracted to them at first sight, some got that it wasn’t a fated meeting BUT a lot like you if not the majority got that it is written in the stars.
other aspects that are a pretty popular topic are her nationality (if she’s Korean or not) and her placements, even if cool to get the energy of it, I think it’s too specific to get it accurately even getting a lot of readings about it. I think as in astrology, we get the overall energy but we cannot confirm the exact characteristics, I could be wrong tho, and honestly I just care that it would be a sweet person like him. A lot get that she has fire and air like a lot of it and a foreigner but other say that she has something that is connected to his culture so mixed is also mentioned, could mean a lot of things, just wanted to mention them :)
That’s so interesting! Thanks for your insight! It’s nice when yall tell me more about these idols bc I generally don’t come across basic info like that hehe. I usually don’t look for information about culture, ethnicity, looks, etc, unless it comes to me in a channeled message and I feel it is relevant to include hehe. I really try to pick general topics because I want to allow the persons energy to come through and reveal what it wants to reveal. It’s why in my FS readings I try to choose general topics like personality or career. Mostly things you would get to know about a person if you were just first meeting them if that makes sense. Their energy was very sweet and comfortable to be in. It felt like a cute and chill romance movie, very easy to enjoy hehe. Thanks for your message, I love hearing feedback from yall! xxxx

there’s been two major films that came out this year that delve into the personal lives of real horrible people that have caused that debate, i guess the upset at that is a little more understandable because they’re real people? i’ve also seen that argument with that new hunger games spin-off movie adaptation that’s coming out soon. the tsurumi one is just dumb though, the people who argued that after 313 should just stick to shonen jump series.
it's different, i was thinking about this too (biopics and stuff, based on real events and real people) like obviously if someone watches a movie about a real life war criminal or serial killer or whatever and goes on to... idk, what do they even do? defend them? say they were misunderstood? it's stupid but i also feel like the concept in itself is passè, nobody knows what is truly going on in another person's mind so semi-fictional stories about real people will always be semi-fictional, you know what i mean? like that evil person becomes a CHARACTER based on historical records and the writer's perception and interpretation of their deeds, it's not like anyone alive has known them personally. am i making sense? like even if it's about a still alive scandalous person... the only thing that can be mostly accurate to reality is the depiction of events, policies (if relevant), aftermaths of those people's actions. it's when the character becomes irrelevant and their evil actions bleed through and show why they were evil regardless of how sympathetic the writers chose to portray them or how popular the actors playing them are. i'm guessing one of the movies you're referring to is oppenheimer (didn't watch) and idk the other one so i can't comment on specifics. but it's different because their conscious actions have brought evil into the world. some writers choose to portray them as sympathetic and morally grey, some show them as paranoid cruel monsters (like in the bunker) but it doesn't really matter, the character doesn't matter.
again though i find the exploration of evil as multi-faced and humane by romanticizing and speculating on real life people a bit tasteless, because it's really hard to define the line between what's real and what's not and what happened and what would have been cool if that happened but it didn't but because the semi-historical movie said it did people will think is true. besides it's insensitive and cruel to the people who have been hurt by the aforementioned actions. jeffrey dahmer victims' families are still mourning the loss of their sons while people watch that netflix show and fawn over the actor and treat it like it's dexter meets hannibal. fiction is, by definition, escapist; it's better when it stays that way.
i also don't think that fiction is necessarily a good tool to use when telling apart bad people in real life, and this is why we need multi-faced baddies in cartoons or whatever. evil in real life is oftentimes banal, methodical and boring, and it's also everywhere, and the perpetrators are a dime a dozen. but cartoonish, one-dimensional, absolute evil in fiction is just boring... what's the point of othering something you should get familiar with anyway? to feel better about yourself? to avoid stepping on the wrong path? to have a definite target you can condemn without thinking much about it? that's a very primitive way to look at the world.

Final assessment in the morning after:
I do wonder what cis white men see, because it must be a completely different movie for them. It’s so interesting, how a step into ‘cool’ and ‘not taking it anymore’ for them can be an actual horror movie for people of color. Take the ‘are you talking to me?’ scene. We see that Travis is literally working up reasons to be confrontational, to be angry. He’s rehearsing for an encounter, cultivating a violent call and response. He spends so much of the middle segment looking for a medium to use violence, looking for just the right excuse. It’s a natural conclusion too, granted we’ve seen the way that he views women and gays and people of color. Like seriously, so many of the people he’s been doing internal monologues on the scummy shifty nature of has been minding their business or even just being friendly. Their only crime defiling his desired purity and he doesn't even know what that is. He can’t even articulate how they encroach on him! He’s not even on their mind but they’re on HIS. He doesn’t even know why or what, but his worst biases continue to leak out all over it. Even when he’s doing something good, he’s using it for vindication and out of a sense of self-importance.
Even more interesting is Taxi Driver’s existence in the pop culture canon— this movie is celebrated! But not for it’s technical prowess, not on the face of the praise, that comes into the discussion later. It’s resonance is the prime element of what I’ve heard in its praise. That is to say: It’s an artistically valuable movie. I’m not disputing that whatsoever. It’s fucking frightening, how it continues to be relevant. It’s a story of a journey down the aimless and dissatisfied loner to white supremacist terrorist pipeline. Is it required viewing before you die, in my opinion? Well, no! It’s one of those viscerally uncomfortable outings, a time capsule of the 70s and a look into the isms and phobias and exploitations without a ‘political’ articulation, but with a very directed and hostile energy nonetheless. I did not need to see all that. Travis Bickle has no ideology, no policy leanings. Just pure disdain and odium. The movie’s observing a phenomenon and carrying it through to its logical conclusion, but man. If you happen to be an audience member belonging to a group Travis Bickle wants dead or takes it upon himself to protect (imposing his views of what a person needs over their own. Not considering the other person’s rich inner life.), it sure does change what you get out of the movie. Stripping back all of the film’s aesthetic, musical, and directorial merits + the acting there’s like nothing here for me and that is a-okay. I am perfectly content to take notes on its visual style and leave it where it is in a place squarely among films that communicate to me something about a certain group of folks.
TLDR: curse you goncharov posting for putting this feather in my hat. Marty Scorsese? Your visual style fucks. Travis Bickle and honestly nearly every man in this movie? Jump into traffic and die.
Watching Taxi Driver with my friend and damn like?! Travis Bickle can’t go 15 minutes without staring black people down suspiciously/talking about ‘filth’ and ‘scum’. Like sir What the fuck are WE in it for? 💀

The recent discourse surrounding Frontiers and how un-Sonic-like it comes off to some fans has made me question how come I myself don’t have as many issues with it?
I mean as I have stated in the past I am very annoyed at how blatantly the game is aping BOTW, and how obviously it’s doing so in an attempt at relevancy and attracting the “cool kids” crowd, but that annoyance of mine stems more from the way they’re doing it than from the simple fact that they’re doing it
Because I dunno I tend to be quite flexible sometimes with what qualifies as “good” gameplay, especially with Sonic, so while I certainly understand where the more cynical fans come from, I can’t quite say that I find Frontiers’ approach to be all that different, at least in concept, in comparison to what the series has done before with its multiple reinventings of the wheel, or multiple playstyles (which were issues in and of themselves I realise)
I suppose this is a byproduct of being a fan of other series which have seen far more drastic changes, to the point of making Frontiers’ alterations seem like small potatoes by comparison.
Everytime I see someone say that Frontiers is a Sonic game in name only at this point, I just think of games like SOTN, Metroid Prime, Megaman Legends, and I say to myself “ Huh, really?”
I’m not criticising these people by the way, that would be hypocritical of me; after all I’m someone who doesn’t like the movies because, even by my flexible standards, I find them to be Sonic in-name-only (Yes I know that the second movie is a bit closer to the games and no that wasn’t enough for me)
It’s just making me wonder: Am I even a fan at this point?
I mean I won’t deny that I’ve kinda fallen out of the loop with the series in the past years, due to an overall lack of quality games (the only game that came out in the last 7-8 years that I can say I like is Mania), the Sonic fandom being the Sonic fandom, and just being interested in other stuff in the meantime
Considering this, and how, as some people are pointing out, Frontiers seems kinda desperate to attract a non Sonic fan crowd (which I won’t deny), since I don’t have too much of an issue with what it’s doing, then did I lose my credentials as a “real” Sonic fan?

As a Latina I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Encanto’ and I do not feel that I was in any way shape or form mis-respresented or oppressed by the film.
The music slapped. The characters were all very cute. I enjoyed that all members of the family were a rainbow of skin colors. I feel like bragging that the entire time I’ve been on this site I’ve only seen 2, count ‘em, 2 posts about Encanto. Both gifsets. I don’t know HOW I managed to escape the Disney hatedumb drama bloggers. Probably because I unfollowed them all ages ago which kinda sucked because some of them were actually decent monsterf*cking blogs but anywhoms.... If any of them tried to cry sameface about any of these characters then they’re literally just saying it to feel cool and relevant because I was marveling at Mirabel’s ample nose and big round eyes. Not to mention the glasses. She looks nothing like Moana OR Rapunzel. Come to think of it ALL the female character in this movie had very unique distinct faces AND bodies. Disney really blew it out of the park with this one. No joke.
Also lots of little cultural things really reminded me of my own family. Like Dolores’s whisper singing during the ‘we don’t talk about Bruno’ number. That kind of purposeful whispering reminded me a lot of myself my mother and my aunt. lol I have no idea how Disney manages to get little things like that right all the time. Must be the ‘cultural consultants’. lol
Also; how the f*ck did I not recognize John Legui-f*cking-zamo as Bruno? His voice is usually unmistakable, to me.
I do not think that Disney owes me or any other Latin people money for this movie except, you know, the ones who actually worked on it and helped to create it. lol I feel like my people (in general) are just happy for the representation. I’d like to use the time I went to see the live action Dora the Explorer movie as an example. Was it a good movie? Not really. But when Dora asked the audience “Can you say ‘severe nuerotoxicity’?” The Latin audience literally mumbled it in response. I almost fell out of my seat from laughter. I love my people. You could really feel the love and appreciation in the room that Dora was on the big screen at all. Even and especially from the adults. But again these are merely things I have observed and my own personal opinion on the subject ofc.
People can proceed to reblog this post or add comments shitting out the mouth and vomiting out ass with negativity. But just know that any of that will go utterly ignored by yours truly. Polite disagreement is more tolerable but just know that it doesn’t mean too much to me, either.

Did you play the kh dark road update? If you did what are your thoughts about it?
I DIDN’T PLAY BUT I WAS WATCHING DAMO’S LIVESTREAM THE MOMENT THE UPDATE DROPPED </3 honestly the reason I’ve gone inactive is because I’ve done nothing but work on wayfinder charm designs for the scala squad and the upperclassmen, you don’t uNDERSTAND IM OBSESSED
but but but, here’s some thoughts under the cut ! as usual, warning for spoilers ahead and lots and lots of text bc I’m a blabbermouth
ok so, I’ll start in order so it’s easier for me to keep track of
the disney worlds being more relevant AND helpful to the story
I’ve seen so many people say this and they’re so fuckin right, cause disney worlds used to be just fun places where SOMETIMES things related to the plot might happen. at best, a certain disney sidekick and their movie helped develop the main gang/plot but no one really thinks “hey KH2 atlantica really helped Sora grow as a person and was super important to the overaching plot huh”. like, sure, not EVERYTHING has to be plot heavy or super relevant, especially in a game aimed for kids but christ I literally erased all of KH2′s lion king from my brain bc the only thing worth remembering there is “look sora is a cute lion!”
it just feels nice because in other games, all these bad guys WERE meant to be THE hottest shit in the world, the scariest mfs you would ever face, but they essentially had nothing other than a fun boss battle and boom bye. nomura kinda spent a few games kicking maleficent’s dead body trying to make her relevant again.
so seeing the Scala squad actually make use of the magic mirror’s abilities MORE THAN ONCE was actually fucking revolutionary for me like, yeah of COURSE you would go back to THE magic mirror that so far has been doing nothing but answer any question you’ve given him. of course it’s cool when MALEFICENT KILLS BALDR’S SISTER because she hasn’t been directly relevant in anything since. what. KH1 or KH2. I liked that Hades, as the GOD OF THE DEAD, actually has the power to BRING PEOPLE BACK IF HE WANTED, if only for a bit LIKE. WOW!!! THEY *ARE* IMPORTANT AND POWERFUL PEOPLE
characters being more than just good vs bad guys. the morality and mentality of light vs darkness being more nuanced.
the main issue a lot of ppl had with Xehanort and Eraqus is that they were rlly painted as strictly bad vs good, but only Eraqus was allowed ??? some semblance of respect in the games ??? even if he fucked up A LOT. because he was, in the end “a good guy”. and Xehanort was just this villain bordering on cartoony with the funny wiggly fingers no one fucking understood but that you were meant to forgive in KH3 despite everything he did, which felt very undeserved
BUT HERE IN DARK ROAD you get to see more of everyone and their clashing ideologies and morals, which is even sadder in retrospect when you see that they’re extremely close and genuinely cared about each other and their world. Xehanort wants change, Eraqus wants to remain the same, Vor is conflicted because she’s right in the middle, the upperclassmen are willing to do horrible things for the greater good, baldr is. well. going thru it 24/7, etc.
Eraqus being so fucking stubborn and determined to eradicate darkness because to him, darkness is inherently evil, MEETING SOMEONE who thinks the same AND is willing to go a STEP FURTHER to help was SO good to me, like Vidar really showed up and did that
just like Xehanort, someone who knows change is part of life and believes darkness could be controlled if you’re strong enough, who has been an outsider everywhere he’s been, MEETING BALDR, WHO IS AN EXTREME VERSION OF HIM GONE WRONG TOO. its good, its very good, i like it
THEY ALSO TALK ABT THE THING I’VE BEEN WAITING SO MANY YEARS TO BE BROUGHT UP ??? ABOUT HOW DARKNESS AND LIGHT ARE EXTREMELY OBJECTIVE CONCEPTS AND UNIQUE TO EACH PERSON - the constant discussions between Eraqus and Xehanort about where darkness comes from exactly, if it’s inherent to a person’s heart or if it’s an outside force corrupting them and so on are genuinely very interesting to me. because there ARE people who are genuinely corrupted and shitty, but there’s also people who go through horrible shit and are consumed by their trauma and negative feelings. you’re not just “a bad person” just because you suddenly have darkness inside you. you’re not just a “good person” just because you side with light either. everyone is fucked bc they all have to make do with the things they know and what they think is right while darkness is out to get their asses
its not that simple, but with a single push anyone can go joker mode basically, it’s just fucking stupid to think anyone can be pure absolute light. DDD even touches this when it comes to Sora being perfect too, but he’s just as liable to falling into darkness if pushed enough, HELL, ANTI SORA IS A REMINDER OF THAT
sure, KH3 did drop some vague shit about Elsa being at the verge of falling to darkness BECAUSE she believed her powers were harmful and thus they became part of the darkness. sure, KH3 also had Aqua falling to darkness after all this time, but you don’t see why or how, she’s just THERE for shock effect and eh. ehhh.
alternatively, the lack of upperclassment content makes me sad........... I wanted to see them banter and see a bit more of their personalities individually
I love their designs, man......I wanted to see more of them...... just look at them... look at this fella...hes just layin down, sleepin, chillin
look at them... Vala took off her glasses to sleep, you barely even get to fuckin see these two bc Vidar’s dialogue box gets in the way but they rlly did that little detail...
Also the ninja, Vali, not talking and being sneaky bc he’s a ninja and his only dialogue happening during the fight against Baldr.... I JUST - LOOK AT HIM HES SO COOL AUGHHHH
like all fucking upperclassmen are so cool and strong like the part where Baldr summons a bunch of heartless before going to the tower and they’re all surrouned bUT THE UPPERCLASSMEN KILL EVERYTHING IN A FUCKING SECOND ?????
LIKE WHY DID YALL DIE TO THE ALBINO TWINK LIKE?? BRO
Vidar and Hoder are also really interesting characters from the scenes they’ve had. I think about the moment at the tower during the final confrontation against Baldr, when Hoder shows up to talk to him and because they’re so close, they know exactly what’s happening and block each other’s attacks. And when they reach out and they have the same expression. AND WHEN ODIN ASKS XEHANORT TO RID BALDR OF DARKNESS, HODER DOES IT BC SHE KNOWS XEHANORT IS HESITATING BUT SHE DOESNT BC THATS HER BROTHER. SHE KNOWS ITS BETTER LIKE THIS
also also, all the little details, tie-ins and foreshadowing too
I like how they explain that death is not commonly called, well. “Death”. because these people don’t die normally, they replace the word “die” with “disappear” because that’s literally what happens to people who die. BUT that also makes me really curious about the graves? What’s exactly the point of tombstones and shit if there’s nobody buried there, like it’s probably just so you can see HOW many people died and feel the weight of Scala ad Caelum’s story but idk, I would’ve liked some unique way of commemorating the death that fits the way they die.
DDD mentions that all the worlds operate on their unique timeframes and that they’re essentially looping over and over, but the restart happens at random. here in dark road we get to see the worlds BEFORE the restart, hence why Agrabah is empty, and the explanation for the constant swarms of heartless which I thought was a nice touch lol
this mention of the Final World which makes me think about THIS post right here saying that one of the stars in KH3 could be Hoder herself
then we see the conversation between current old man Xehanort and Vanitas about how Vanitas is most likely the remaining Darkness hiding which is A Lot To Think About given the fact that Vanitas has Sora’s face and Sora is hinted to be the next proper Child of Destiny (EVEN THOUGH I STILL THINK IT’S RIKU BUT ANYWAY) like yeah yeah, Vanitas looks like that because Sora and Ventus’ hearts connected very early on but how ironic is that ????
THEN that convo between Xehanort and Eraqus about how many lives they’d want and Xehanort has the balls to say 14 and then days later Nomura drops a fucking drawing of Xehanort in (possibly) Quadratum? yeah. yeah I’m eating that up
oh right, also Eraqus’ entire quirky trait about running away and shit? I thought that would come up eventually as in, he actually ran away and people died because of that choice but I guess not lmfao, that was kinda eh considering how many times it’s brought up in the beginning
ALSO the fact that their keyblades is a more fancy version of the starlight from KHux really got to me like, yeah. YEAH..... This really is Ephemer’s legacy.....
AND the fact that during Vor and Baldr’s scene at the tower, in every flashback you see EVERYONE fading away in light minus Bragi. Plus some of Bragi’s dialogue like his reason to become a keyblade master, it really is good foreshadowing
also Odin saying this :
to the guy who was supposed to be the child of destiny like yeah man, destiny sure fucking SUCKS. yall really fucking got this guy to be a sacrificial lamb huh
Baldr as a vessel for Darkness and his entire mass murder scene was pretty cool ngl
Again, I really like the scene where you get to see in a fucking row all the days he spent in his room grieving and mourning and spiraling, like. You know that one post that says “producers : you guys cant show anything showing death or blood. writers : ok *makes up a fater worse than death*” yeah............... the absolute irony of being possessed by the entity that orchestrated your own sister’s death AND your own demise is very very good
It’s a bit on the nose that he was meant to get absolutely fucked in the story since he’s been missing from pretty much everything and he has. well. White hair and a sister. That can only mean ONE thing and it’s tragedy.
THIS detail went too fast for me to notice but while rewatching the video I caught it and ??? BRO ??? I THOUGHT VALA TRIPPED BUT SHE SHOVES VOR OUT OF THE WAY TO SAVE HER
also really lets be honest, the counting is so extra and so good. the little quips and jabs like “OH DO I HAVE TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING TO YOU?” and shit were also really funny to me like yeah, absolutely, please show me the flashbacks and explain what happened bc this is Kingdom Hearts and you fucking bet I need the extra info
I like how Eraqus insists that they can STILL save him while Xehanort was ready to fucking kill this guy and that moment of hesitation was all the darkness needed to give ANOTHER fucking speech about shit - a speech that works perfectly because he’s casting so much doubt in Xehanort’s heart by making it all about “it’s us and then there’s THEM” and kind of being like “yeah, the second your emotional support boytoy Eraqus dies, it’s fucking over for your sanity bro, I’ve been there”
and the entire explanation as to how constantly insisting that darkness is inherently bad has led to people like Baldr go absolutely unhinged because they start to believe THEY are bad, despite having done NOTHING to prove that, which relates to Terra’s entire journey and Ansem the Wise’s resentment towards Nobodies and consequent treatment of ppl like Namine, Xion or Roxas who CLEARLY felt things, were developing unique personalities but because they weren’t inherent light, then they weren’t worth the chance
so basically every goddamn old man who has become a teacher in this entire saga of games is a shithead lmfao. Eraqus doesn’t get to see this conversation between Hoder and Baldr, so of course he clings to that belief of Darkness = evil evil evil, especially with the shit Xehanort is going to start pulling right after this but like
man. look at them.
AND THEN THEY PULL OUT THEIR SWORDS AND THEN HODER DROPS HERS??? AND BALDR IS REACHING OUT TO HER ONE LAST TIME and the fuckin purple fart just has to come back to ruin it
also this ? THIS? yeah. I love the entire chain thing coming back, I also love seeing the gazing eye and waving at it knowing MoM is writing all this shit down
Vor. Just Vor. I rlly like Vor now
The second I saw her I disliked her because she’s small and cutesy and in media like this those are red flags to me because. All small cutesy characters usually end un being marketable annoying sidekicks with high pitched voices that I can’t fucking stand
BUT I really liked how Vor was present and important throughout the entire thing, acting as a mediator for Xehanort and Eraqus of sorts and also being the middle ground/indecisive person, because ofc not everyone can have super strong morals or want to radicalize the world. She felt like a nice balance and well, I guess everything in KH has to come in sets of three
I didn’t understand this part during her death at first, I really thought she fucking meant she belonged in the afterlife or death as punishment for leaving her friends behind and I was like holy shit thats sad as fuck, bUT LMFAO SHE MEANT SHE BELONGED WITH HER FRIENDS AFTER ALL IM DUMB AS BRICKS SORRY VOR
Eraqus in this specific frame, that’s all. He looks very polite, I like him, please look at him
anyway that was just to bait you all into reading this part and remember the line Xehanort drops about how Eraqus has done nothing but cry every goddamn night since everyone died and that he’s heard all of it. that was VERY good too I loved that and all the fanart it’s spawning from that, it’s HEARTBREAKING to think about, especially when Eraqus is trying to get Xehanort to laugh as if he hadn’t spent the whole week crying his heart out
and then Baldr’s entire speech about how Xehanort is different, that he’s not like Eraqus and that eventually, once Eraqus leaves or disappears, it’ll be fucking over for Xehanort bc all he’s done is chase after him desperately just casually being destroyed by Eraqus being his funnyman silly self, reinforcing their friendship and that if Xehanort ever falls to darkness, he’ll be there to pull him out
yea
anyway i really hope that the entire bloodlines arc in missing link doesn’t reveal them as cousins or something because. they’re my emotional support divorcees, they got literally everything - childhood friends, trauma, scarring each other emotionally and physically for life, keeping in touch for the sake of their kids, another divorce, absolute pure death and then a second marriage while ascending to the heavens, its amazing
THE Luxu reveal lives rent free in my fucking head you don’t understand, I love this man to bits
everyone used to be so fucking afraid of their favorite characters being part Xehanort or getting norted, now everyone is at the risk of being Luxu and it’s so funny to me as a Xigbar enjoyer
I really like that we’re keeping up the “brai” names lmfao, but also the implications are spiraling in my brain bc does Luxu pick people who have those names As A Statement or does he change them once he possesses them. what happens to the original owners of the body and where do they fUCKING GO, LUXU DID YOU FEEL GENUINELY ATTACHED TO THESE KIDS OR WERE YOU FAKING IT, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BY XEHANORT’S SIDE KNOWING HE MOURNED YOUR DEATH IN HIS TEENS, DID YOU BECOME A FUNNY MAN OVER THE YEARS UNCONSCIOUSLY BC THATS EXACTLY HOW THE MASTER OF MASTERS ACTED? WHAT IS LEFT OF THE ORIGINAL YOU, WHEN YOUR BODY IS NO LONGER YOUR OWN AND YOUVE GROWN AND CHANGED TOO MUCH TO BE RECOGNIZABLE, I NEED ANSWERS I LOVE THIS BODY SNATCHING TERMITE, HES MY PERSONAL SHIP OF THESEUS AND I LOVE HIM
The KHux player not being Xehanort confirmation is pretty sad but eh. The child of destiny thing and the bloodlines are interesting at least
I really really really liked the idea of Nomura trolling the fanbase who is very vocal and tired of Xehanort being everywhere by making the player ACTUALLY xehanort. it also made sense, Xehanort’s obsession with finding the people in his dreams, because those people were ACTUALLY his friends in his previous life, him being a superempath who leeches people’s memories and feelings is kinda eh in this specific context because I don’t feel it justifies all the shit he does to find Ephemer, Ventus, etc
but baby nort is very cute and I like that we get to be his grandparent and mentor for awhile, probably being the reason he’s also very interested in the outside worlds due to him being stranded here AND all the stories we most likely told him about everything. and I also like that he was pretty much set up to fail the second we died, doomed characters are very fun
I guess this confirms that Skuld’s descendant is Xehanort’s mother since he does mention his mom looks like “the girl from his dreams” aka Skuld herself. So that would mean Ephemer and Skuld’s bloodlines becoming one too, which is interesting, I cant wait for missing link..........

Chip And Dale Rescue Rangers Spoilers/Thoughts
As the title suggests, this contains major spoilers for the movie. Only proceed if you’ve either seen it or don’t care about being spoiled.
1. So the voices didn’t actually bother me. It helped, I think, that they started talking in the alternate voices pretty much straight away. Which I think helped separate it from ‘filming’.
2. CGI surgery? Must admit, that’s an interesting point. Also makes sense with evolution. I’d assume there must just be CGI toons as well, created more recently.
3. Ugly Sonic!? I thought he was cool and I liked that they made him relevant to the plot instead of a one-off gag.
4. The muppet toons were done really well. You’re never shown their legs, makes it more real.
5. The whole stinky cheese thing...wow. Answers the question of if there’s drugs or not in Toon universe. The way Chip initially tried to charm his way in...yeah, he may have lost some of his acting skills doing that insurance gig.
6. The throw away line about the Nicktoons. ‘The toons fought back’. People have pointed out this is against character for the toons, but I think it makes sense, albeit it in a dark way. The rugrats at least must be in their 30′s by now. [Aired in early 90′s] Its surely not unreasonable to assume they must have changed their personalities, and we don’t know what happened. Maybe they only ‘fought back’ with pies. As for the Paw patrol dogs, my theory is that either it’s an exaggeration. [Which I don’t think would be unlikely if it happened last year and he was signed off work afterwards] or that it did happen and due to the fact they’re toon dogs they can’t be put down. Either that or the Police department were so mortified about the fact they messed up so completely they let all charges drop.
7. Toons on the wall that I noticed/knew, Jiminy Cricket, Flounder, Gus [Cinderella], The Tweedles, Sneezy, Garfield [There’s also a sign above Garfield that says foghorn. I’m assuming this is a reference to the Looney Tunes character?]
8. Toon body parts on the other side of the walls that I noticed. Jimmy Neutron’s hair, Cheshire Cats smile, Pink Panther mouth, a white glove that could belong to anyone [brings to mind Mickey Mouse, but I’m fairly sure it can’t be him], a smurfs hat, Sora’s hair + Mad Hatters hat.
9. Ellie...I’m going to be honest she seems quite a bland character. Not much is given to her. [This might be because apparently test audiences reacted negatively to her. Considering they also apparently reacted negatively to the original idea of Pluto being the villain, which led to them choosing the below instead [presumably] I’m not sure they were right.]
Also I think credit needs to be given to the actress for the fight scene she was in. She must have been working with thin air, which must be very difficult.
10.Toons I saw at the end [and recognised] Abu, Fred Flintstone, Patrick Star, Woody Woodpecker, Phineas Flynn, Dipper, Jiminy Cricket, Flounder, Cheshire Cat [Crossed with the tiger from Aladdin], Johnny Test, Kai [Jungle Book], a toon that looks like Obelix from ‘Asterix’ [Same pattern pants and same hair, but black], Gus [with a parrots beak], Gumball? [Amazing world of], Bambi, Sneezy, Woody [same clothes, green instead], Frog Tiana, One that looks like a care bear, but with a tail? [Purple],
11. Sweet Pete...now, I do know about Bobby Driscoll, but I must admit if I didn’t know the story [which I didn’t until it started making the rounds on Tumblr] I’d just think it was very clever. It’s clear toons do grow up mentally [and they must in some sort of chronological order as well seeing as the chipmunks start in 3rd grade] and as I’ve previously mentioned in another posts I think there’s other ways they could have gone with it if they were determined to have Peter Pan as the villain.
His voice works as well, seeing as Chip and Dale have completely different voices. I’d assume that Disney made the EPIC FAIL conclusion that no one would know/care about what happened to Bobby Driscoll. It’s the only thing that makes sense.
The bootlegged idea is interesting as well. It’s shame there wasn’t a team up between Chip and Dale and other family members of the other toons. [Sneezy, for instance, was bootlegged, so it would have been interesting to see the other dwarfs helping out.] The very least we see is that it’s a big story in the news.
I also like the way Peter gets his henchmen to do EVERYTHING. Even when he’s about two centimetres away from Chip and Dale himself, he still tells Jimmy to grab them when he could have just reached out himself.
He must have started the business before having his CGI operation, though, because in the parody ‘Flying Bedroom Boy’ you can see he has the stubble round his mouth. [Another good detail]
He’s also ‘The chessmaster’ I think. Look at his expression when Putty’s telling his story. He knows he’s lying but he’s just waiting for Ellie to realise that.
If the whole thing didn’t parallel Bobby Driscoll so much it would have been a really clever take.
12. Finally, on a lighter note...we want Darkwing, we want Darkwing! Loved it, so in-character.

Alright let’s talk GVK spoilers!!!
My reactions as best I can remember them!
- love how Kong is humanized from the very first scene, like every time he shows up he’s humanized so much more than other titans are. If that was at the expense of other titans being made likable I wouldn’t enjoy it so much, but like, Godzilla is made pretty lovable over the course of Monsterverse, Mothra is too, and all the titans featured for long are given recognizable emotions that let us see them as more intelligent and feeling than “just” animals; so all of them are made understandable/likable/sympathetic. But of them all, Kong is the only one really humanized. Which makes sense, because like, big monkey! Basically our distant cousin!
- And they kept playing, like, normal songs for him, which cracked me up.
- I really appreciated how you could SEE the titans in this movie. After all the weather effects to hide the titans in KOTM, there was such a clear difference in this one from the very start. Kong in the daylight! Godzilla makes his first attack at night, and even then you can see him much more clearly than you can for most of KOTM! Nice!
- after the Iwi were portrayed as silent stoic witnesses in Skull Island, I really appreciated that they took an Iwi character, made her a main character, and gave her dialogue and a real role to play in the story while also keeping her deaf/mute. I think that was a good way to improve on the way that the Iwi got got sidelined in the last movie while still maintaining the worldbuilding!
- I didn’t appreciate so much that, y’know, they murdered the rest of her people off-screen in order to do it. Couldn’t they have gone “her parents died so she got adopted by a Monarch agent that was close to her family, but like, the rest of her tribe is fine”? Or at the very least “their island got fucked up so they had to be evacuated but like they’re settling in somewhere else”? “They’re living under this island dome with Kong and they know what’s up and Monarch’s keeping them in the loop and they decided they’re chill with their new dome home, but this one girl likes to go on adventures with Monarch”? Something? Did we have to kill them all off? Y’all make up an entire fictional indigenous culture and then murder them off-screen when you don’t need them? Just let them live.
- a few minutes in I was like “hold on, we’ve got two characters that speak sign language, we’ve got a giant gorilla, gorillas learn sign language, is there any reason they can’t teach Kong?” and then later I was like “OOOOOH!!” Humans and titans learning how to communicate with each other has been one of my favorite themes to explore in Monsterverse fanfic so I was absolutely tickled to see it getting explored in canon, too.
- That said I think it’s hilarious that the girl managed to teach Kong to sign without, like... anybody seeing. Kong’s hands are above the tree line and there are cameras everywhere, how did NOBODY with Monarch see him signing.
- Bernie’s weaponized being an annoying coworker to such a degree it can only be called an art, and I really appreciated it.
- Godzilla’s extra chonky in this movie and I dig it. Roomie noted he was extra crocodilian and I dig that too.
- “There’s been no confirmed titan sightings in three years” I don’t buy that for a minute. They’re BIG. Rodan NESTS IN VOLCANOES. They found a MOTHRA EGG. Humans have A SCARILY WELL-FUNDED ORGANIZATION DEDICATED SOLELY TO FOLLOWING TITANS AROUND. Like, most of the lore in GVK that I don’t personally like, I can be like “eh... I can tweak it just a little bit with headcanons to make it work for me...” but NO confirmed titan sightings? You expect me to believe ALL of them moved underground when we’d previously seen them all prefer to live above ground? You expect me to believe that now that they’re all AWAKE, they learned how to HIDE?? Uh-uh. And at the end of KOTM there was stuff in the credits about using titan droppings as biofuel, obviously they’re still walking around up top! Can’t take that from me. Nope.
- Who the FUCK is Ren Serizawa and how is he related to Ishiro Serizawa? IS he related? Maybe they just dropped the surname as another “yeah this is a Godzilla movie for Godzilla fans” easter egg but I have a hard time believing that he can’t be somehow related to the other character with the Very Important Last Name who was so important in the last two Godzilla movies. If he is related I’m sure it’s been explained in a tie-in comic or the novelization or something, I’ll look it up later.
- I had to look up how much weight huge battleships can carry while writing a KOTM fic where Ghidorah hitches a ride on one, and y’all, I had to pull weird gravity-negating magic to get him to ride on that boat. Godzilla and Kong woulda sunk that boat like a rock. All I could think during that scene is “this wouldn’t work and I know that because I DID THE RESEARCH and I wasn’t even getting PAID.” I’ll choose to believe that Monarch gets special heavy duty ships designed to carry titans but nobody mentioned it because it wasn’t relevant to Kong’s journey.
- The bit where they could see where Godzilla was swimming because he’d got half a ship hooked to him that was bobbing around on the surface, didn’t Jaws do something like that with a buoy? It’s been ages since I’ve seen Jaws. Anyway good reference.
- Insert “they’re gonna need a bigger boat” joke
- I LOVED the part where they shut down all the ships to get Godzilla to leave. Both because, one, it’s a spectacular callback to KOTM’s “turn off all the guns so he knows we’re not a threat” that makes it seem like now that’s just what Monarch knows what to do to get G to chill out, and two... we know that Godzilla backs off either when he’s killed his enemy or when his enemy has yielded to him. At the end of KOTM—and the end of GVK—the act of yielding is presented as very ceremonial and uniform across species: everyone lowers anything they’ve got that could be dangerous (claws, fangs, beaks, axes) and bows to show Godzilla they’re not gonna fight. Battleships, obviously, can’t bow, but even without being inducted into whatever secret titan cultural intricacies might be going on, humans have figured out their own way to “bow” to Godzilla: cut all the power, so their ships can’t move and can’t use weapons. I know the movie presented it as “playing dead,” but c’mon, if Godzilla could hear MechaG power up from halfway around the planet then he could hear that Kong’s heart was still beating, and he’s been around enough boats to know humans can turn them off and on when they want. The humans bowed to Godzilla. He accepted that they yielded and left.
- Mark Russell looked like such a dad in this movie, like he’s retired 100% from being a rugged action hero and now he’s just Pure Dad. I like him better when he’s a dad, it’s a good development for him. He got like 3 lines and I’m like “I appreciate this character development.”
- Despite all my qualms about how conspiracy theories and extremist groups are handled in Monsterverse (and WHICH conspiracy theories they decide to reference), I really love Madison and Bernie’s dynamic. The adult man who’s the excitable wide-eyed believer in every BS conspiracy you can possibly imagine; and then the serious, severe Teenage Girl On A Mission who’s hypercompetent because she was raised for five years by a friggin doomsday cult militia; and despite having wildly different personalities they’re just, in total agreement about everything. Handled just a BIT differently (like, leaving out the more gross IRL conspiracies) they would be a wildly fun comedic duo—especially with Josh the Only Sane Man coming along as the hapless sidekick. And they all play off of each other so well! Both in a comedic sense, and in more serious moments—when Bernie talked about his wife, there was a real moment of empathy between him and Madison with very little said. I’d watch an entire movie just about the three of them. I’d watch a TV show.
- On the one hand I wasn’t too much of a fan of KOTM’s “all titans... are inherently In Tune With Nature... nature has a Balance, because that’s a Real Thing and not an anthropocentric concept to describe how we like nature to act, and they automatically restore it... because they’re like, some kinda borderline divinities or something... we should probably be worshipping them...” thing; but, now that it was totally absent in GVK, I sorta miss it. Like I feel like there needs to be a balance, a few humans who are like “i lowkey worship these dudes?” and a few others who are like “they’re cool but like, that’s a lil extreme” and that neither side be presented as Right in how they regard titans’ relationship with nature.
- “All titans come from THE HOLLOW EARTH” nah I don’t buy that it’s silly. Basically, what I object to is the idea that all titans have some sort of intrinsic similarity (they all come from the same hitherto-unknown location; they all are part of the same pack that has the same alpha; they all are fueled/fed by the same energy source; etc) rather than letting them be SEPARATE species whose only unifying traits are “they’re all big enough to fuck everything up everywhere they go” and “they’re big enough that the typically-insurmountable barriers between different biomes (mountain ranges, valleys, long distances with terrible weather) aren’t insurmountable for them, so even if they’re specialized in different environments they still all have to deal with each other pretty often.” I’ll make some exceptions for convergent evolution (i.e., claiming multiple titans developed similar traits that are relatively easy to spontaneously evolve and a prerequisite for a creature to survive at such a large size). But I can’t buy “this big gorilla has more biologically in common with this big crocodile-iguana than he does with, say, gorillas,” or most of the other “all these titans have THIS IN COMMON” claims that Monsterverse makes, including “everyone’s from hollow earth.” So I’m tossing that out the window and substituting my own headcanons. Some might’ve evolved there but some evolved on the surface. Maybe a majority of them like ducking in and out of the hollow earth like some kind of titan shortcut system. Kong’s species, I can buy, IS native to hollow earth, considering that they built a whole-ass society down there with tools and architecture.
- I’m SO curious about the little underground Kong home, the Godzilla motif in the floor, and the axe that appeared to be made with a Godzilla scute. What’s the story there??? We know Godzilla’s species and Kong’s species are ancient rivals. Is it because Kong’s species hunted Godzilla’s to steal their scutes to make weapons, seeing them as a valuable resource the way, like, early humans considered woolly mammoths a valuable resource—thus making that Godzilla on the floor equivalent to cave art of mammoths made by people who hunted them—until the Godzillas got pissed and started fighting back en masse? Or were Godzillas and Kongs already enemies when Kongs decided to start making weapons out of their corpses? Did they use to be allies, fighting together, with Godzillas voluntarily offering shed scutes and/or bones of their deceased members to Kongs, and that place used to be a shared home until they started fighting?
- What about that power source, is it something that was already there that both Kongs and Godzillas started to deliberately harvest for technology/atomic breath? Or did Godzillas automatically channel that stuff and Kongs exploited/borrowed/traded with Godzillas to utilize it too? Or is the power from Godzillas who collaboratively poured a bunch of power into the place thus that Kongs were able to use it too? I doubt Godzilla’s species CREATED all that weird energy but the question remains of whether, like, they channel it FROM underground, or naturally produce the same thing in their own bodies, or what.
- Godzilla using his atomic breath to dig a hole STRAIGHT TO KONG just to KICK HIS ASS is hilarious. How lucky that Hong Kong just HAPPENS to be straight over Kong’s house! Were all the tunnels to the hollow earth made by pissed off Godzillas who wanted to kick monkey ass??
- I loved the aesthetic of the battle scene in Hong Kong, with the brightly colored neon building outlines, VERY cool look. The choreography of the battle scene was great too, especially
- we literally broke into applause when Kong shoved the axe handle in Godzilla’s mouth. Love it, perfect callback, that was the ONE thing from the original King Kong Vs Godzilla I was hoping to see referenced and there it was.
- You could really see a difference in how Kong and Godzilla fought—Kong doing a better job at using tools and the environment, Godzilla fighting more like a reptile. They seemed to emphasize Godzilla’s more animalistic behaviors in this movie to accomplish that contrast—he was down on all fours and moving like a crocodile more often, he was clawing at Kong’s chest—but even though it seemed a bit different of a combat technique it also didn’t seem out of place compared to how he fought in prior movies. And we’ve already seen that if Godzilla’s involved in a fight and one of the combatants knows how to use the environment, it’s typically not gonna be Godzilla. (See: Ghidorah using the reflection in a building’s windows to see what’s behind him, and recognizing a nearby power source and biting it to juice himself up.)
- So many of Godzilla’s enemies seem to have specialized in negating his atomic breath in order to combat him! The MUTOs directly suppress his ability to use it—and it makes sense that that’s an inborn ability they have, since they evolved to use Godzilla’s species as prey. Kong has a weapon that both acts as a shield to absorb the breath and turn it back against Godzilla’s species—they didn’t evolve to counter Godzilla, but they developed tools once a rivalry happened. Ghidorah’s the exception—which makes sense, since he came from space—but even at that we see him using tactics specifically to take into account Godzilla’s most powerful weapon (such as keeping one head on lookout for when he starts glowing so that they know when they need to dodge).
- LOVED the reveal that MechaG was based off of Ghidorah’s brain, it has vibes of both the Kiryu Saga and the way that Heisei MechaG is based off of Mecha-King Ghidorah. Not the most surprising plot twist, since we’d theorized that they might use San to make MechaG, but I wasn’t 100% sure they were gonna go with it until they finally did. Even when I was going “huh, the mecha pilot’s chamber looks weirdly organic” I didn’t make the connection to WHY until the reveal, lol.
- “Ghidorah’s necks are so long that the heads have to communicate with each other telepathically” that’s COMPLETELY WILD but I love it, it follows very well from their prior portrayal as telepathic empaths in Heisei, it lines up with their emphasis on electricity (because BRAINWAVES AND ELECTRICITY, hey ho movie monster pseudo science!), and it very much compliments my own private headcanon that they’ve got some psychic/mind control abilities.
- The movie ended with both “Godzilla won, technically” but also “since they teamed up as equals, the ending doesn’t FEEL like ‘Godzilla wins, Kong loses’ but rather ‘they both won against a common foe’” and since I’m on both Team Godzilla and Team They Should Be Friends, I’m happy with this outcome. Plus since the last time they fought, the Japanese movie company graciously let the American monster win, so it’s only polite that the American movie company graciously let the Japanese monster win.
- There were just a few too many humans in this movie. I was intrigued by Ren but we didn’t get much out of him, but like I guess somebody had to be in the pilot’s seat other than the Apex CEO. Didn’t care for the author of the hollow earth book, I feel like his role was superfluous. Didn’t need the Apex CEO’s daughter there at all, coulda done without her. How about this, combine all three roles. Instead of having a whole-ass author who knows about the hollow earth, just casually reference that Rick from KOTM wrote a book about it since he was the expert, and (since he wasn’t in this movie) say that he tragically died going to explore the hollow earth himself, and that way we’ve got the book with the “titans are from there” theory AND an excuse to share the “humans die when they go underground” info. Now, have Ren be working for Apex as a pilot for Mechagodzilla, but have him be MechaG’s pilot because he’s also a good pilot in general, and can fly those HEAV things. Have Apex send him to Monarch to be like “hey, you guys trust me right, since I’m Ishiro Serizawa’s relative? We at Apex have heard all about your failed hollow earth expedition, and due to Ishiro I’ve got some past ties to Monarch so I’ve got high clearance with y’all, so I could bring over this useful Apex tech that’d let you go underground and use what I know about hollow earth from my past time at Monarch to help guide things.” Once they’ve got the little chunk of energy stuff and go topside, he hustles it straight to Apex and straps into his seat to run MechaG. Bam, you’ve combined “person who knows enough about hollow earth to help the expedition,” “person who represents Apex’s interests and gets the energy,” and “person who pilots MechaG” into one character, in a way that takes three flat/underdeveloped characters and turns them into a single interesting character with a lot going on and some intriguing ties to the rest of the cast.
I think that’s everything?? Hoo.

How about Levi x reader, where they get set up on a blind date by their friends as a prank, but actually end up liking each other
note :: honestly not my best at all but it was cute i guess T___T kinda an opposites attract thing also it’s a modern au !!
for some reason hange and sasha wake up one morning and decide they want to wreak havoc
it’s not peculiar coming from them
after all they are always up to something
like the one time sasha purposefully trapped herself in an elevator with a hot guy
or the time hange tried to make coffee with an energy drink mixed in it??
OR-
okay you’re getting sidetracked
but the point is they have no real reason for this new venture of theirs
when do they ever have a reason though?
somehow today their scheming has led to them begging you to go on a blind date
“he’s not my type i mean he’s old and whatever but you would like him” sasha’s stuffing her face with a buttery croissant
she doesn’t sound very convincing
then again, you have no objections to the idea
you’re single
you’re lonely
if it doesn’t end in love well ??? guess you could fuck
and if you don’t fuck well ?? you got to go outside and get some fresh air
BUT
the idea of blind dating makes you squirm
the uncertainty which comes along with the situation is intimidating
honestly, part of you is worried you’ll end up making a mortal enemy at dinner, not a lover
the other portion is petrified you’ll end up on a date with a murderer
what if it ends up like that one netflix show and you end up getting stalked????
you shudder at that thought
BE OPTIMISTIC Y/N!! YUP YUP OPTIMIST ERA!!!
levi feels the same way but his version of nervous is very different to your own
his fears are very different
what if his date appears prim and proper but it’s really just a huge facade hiding how their house is a pigsty?
imagine the third date in is a movie night in and he walks into a landfill site...
what if his date chews their food obnoxiously loud?
what if they just dislike him?
that’s why ideally he would prefer dating someone he knows beforehand
but there’s no one he knows already that he’s interested in
that’s exactly why when hange calls levi and asks him if he’s willing to go on a blind date on such short notice he scoffs and tells them that maybe if they got a life they would know that his answer is a straight no
he’s used to people not pairing well with him
he guesses it’s because of his sardonic personality, maybe it’s his occupation - he is constantly busy after all. perhaps it’s his foul mouth
erwin told him the last time he had a date that he should probably ease up on the cursing but it’s levi...
he isn’t going to change for anyone.
and really if him being little mean is that much of a deal breaker he won’t bother looking for anyone
he’ll go it solo he supposes
“LEVI. PLEASE. you both would fit together like jigsaw pieces.” hange is practically begging
then they stop for a second and wiggle their eyebrows “that can have many alternative meaningssss~”
levi purses his lips and shoots them a hard glare
“shut it, i’m not going. i’m busy.”
“busy doing.....?”
“cleaning i need t-”
“NO??? do it some other time please they’re smart, fun AND not boring at all.”
hange gives him a pleading look then explains how his mystery date has already agreed for sasha’s sake and he really can’t stand you up
“you want me to go on a blind date with one of SASHA BRAUS’ friends????”
he looks at hange in utter disbelief because that means you just have to be loud mouthed and annoying like jean or connie
or just be as stupidly unfunny
he shakes his head rejecting the idea completely
“i enjoy sophisticated people.”
hange sighs heavily
“give it a chance! c’monnn what if i bribe you?”
little does levi know hange and sasha have purposefully picked you out because of the way you’re both polar opposites
where levi loves order you’re disorderly, where he follows his own rules you don’t follow any at all, where he is disagreeable you’re agreeable in every way of the word
where he is cold, you are warm, he’s a night owl, you’re an early bird, you’re day and he’s night
everything about the two of you is different
that isn’t necessarily bad, but sasha and hange find it hilarious enough to set you both up on this date
if it fails it’ll still be funny
you’re rummaging through your closet looking for your favourite perfume because to be frank you are NOT showing up unprepared
like?? what if he moves in to hug you and he smells the scent of the chicken you were cooking today
yeah you did have a shower but sometimes you wonder if the smell lingers
you KNOW it doesn’t but it’s a matter of principle
imagine he leans in and smells marinated chicken
you think you’d die on the spot if that were to ever happen
shoving a pack of mints in your purse along with your emergency pepper spray you give your outfit a once over
it’s nothing too extravagant but it’ll do the job
at this point, everything is great! you’re walking out of your door and you’re pumped up
you’ll be early for once and there’s a spring in your step
making a good first impressions is key here
you’re so close to your uber BUT
then you hear it
it’s almost inaudible but you’re sure you hear a mewl come out of the alleyway to your right
you’re about to ignore it because you aren’t even sure if you’ve heard it correctly
and it’s late you don’t feel like wandering into an empty alleyway
but the sound only repeats itself
fuck.
cautiously venturing inside you see it.
eyes softening you look at the stray kitten in front of you and bite your bottom lip and scoop him up in your arms you’re debating if running back to your apartment and leaving him there is the best option
what’s the other option?
well you could bring the cat along with you...
it would be a funny story for the future if the date goes well
now. unlike you levi is nowhere near late
in fact he’s ten minutes early waiting promptly outside of the restaurant in his white button up
he fiddles with his collar and wonders how the actual hell he got talked into doing this
hange offering to buy him cleaning supplies free of charge is probably it
8:15pm, you were meant to be here five minutes ago
if you’ve stood him up he’s going to end hange for wasting his precious free time
especially when he rarely interrupts his schedule for anyone.
a few moments of silence pass and he thinks
how do you look?
not like it matters to him
but he’d just like to know
okay, so.
it’s 8:30pm now
levi is royally pissed off that you even have the audacity to show up
you’re holding your knees as you puff in and out
“I’M SORRY. i know i’ve wasted all your time but i saw a stray on my way here and i couldn’t leave him”
the updo your hair is in is disheveled and fly aways stick out
you’ve ran here after your uber broke down that much is obvious.
to be fair, your explanation is believable and he would have let it slide if and only if
you had NOT brought the fucking cat along with you???
he’s eyeing it with disgust as it purrs up against you and you coo at it stroking its fur
“you want to sneak a cat into the restaurant?” he asks in pure disbelief
sheepishly grinning and scratching the back of your neck your response is “well i know we can’t but if you tried to i wouldn’t mind because i really like this cat :-(”
when hange said he’d have fun they were lying
but at least they didn’t lie about you not being boring.
he picks the cat up with one of his hands
looks it in the eyes
sighs then places him carefully into your purse
“don’t let him be seen.”
you light up and try to hide the grin forming on your face
he isn’t that bad
he’s a little too serious for your liking but you can handle that.
the two of you walk into the restaurant and fuck you because the cat has to start mewling and screeching
coughing rather aggressively to cover it up it miraculously goes unheard
he shoots you a sturdy glare because he’s able to hear the muffled sounds
luckily, no one else is standing near you or is within earshot.
gulping you realise this is not a good first impression at all
late to the date, bringing a cat with you, begging him to help you sneak the cat in
you feel guilty, he probably expected way better
“oi, move your ass” he snaps
you look up realising you’ve been too lost in thought to see levi walking in front of you
“sorry” you mumble
he doesn’t respond but he does look back at you
you can’t gather anything from his face because it’s either plain or he’s got his brows furrowed
currently it’s showing no signs of distaste so he must be accepting your apology
he’s kind enough, steps out of the way to offer you the space to sit down first
he sits after you and you have no idea where to look
then the cat cries again from your purse
“lucifer, shhhhh”
you’re patting him and try to silence him
“you’ve named it already?”
laughing to yourself you’re happy he’s initiated the conversation first
“he’s a little sneaky so i called him it. do you have any other names you’d like?”
“why would my input in this matter be relevant?”
“you’re basically his family now!”
he’s covering his mouth with his hands and you swear you can see the pink tinge of a blush creep upwards and flood his cheeks
but this man doesn’t seem like the type to blush over anything.
composing himself he sticks a hand out and finally asks “what’s your name?”
coming back to your senses you realize it’s been twenty minutes since you’ve met and you haven’t even had the manners to ask his name even after arriving late
“Y/N!! what’s yours?”
play it cool!!!
he doesn’t respond instead stares at your purse and points with his index finger
lucifer has escaped again and now you really are regretting bringing him along with you
whilst you’re grabbing the cat and hushing him your date hums “try to guess it.”
well, that’s spontaneous, he doesn’t seem like the type to entertain himself with games
you think hard, he’s serious but he is kind, you guess that’s why he reminds you of sebastian from the little mermaid
get it? because he’s sweet but he’s a crab so he’s crabby??
god that joke is AWFUL because it doesn't even take into account the actual character of sebastian the crab
but you have no other guesses available.
“hmm... sebastian?” you jokingly ask
“it’s levi.” he deadpans.
oh wow you couldn’t be more far off
playing around with your fingers in your lap you fidget nervously looking around for a waiter to interrupt the conversation
levi has to sense your unease because his tone loosens up
“...do i really look like a sebastian though?”
looking back up at him your bite your lip keeping a giggle in
you can sense the ghost of a smile on his face
“yeah like the crab from a little mermaid”
at that he scowls but he inquires what exactly that means
the rest of the date goes without a hitch, sure there’s a few moments where lucifer attempts to sneak away but levi has no problems stopping him
it takes a while but the conversation flows easily after the awkward barrier from before is broken down
it’s lighthearted and calm.
he’s humorous in a way you can’t describe
levi’s mannerisms are cute, everything about him is endearing despite the serious front he has
and you can’t quite put your finger on it but his demeanor is charming
overall you find yourself enjoying the date even more than you expected
now the two of you are walking away from the booth and the fresh night time air hits your face as you step outside
turning to him you smile radiantly and without allowing him to get a word in you take your opportunity by the reins
“second date?”
you don’t normally make the first move but you’re eager
and to your surprise he’s just as eager as you are.
it doesn’t even look like he stops to think before he nods and agrees to meet with you again.
exchanging numbers with him you wave as you and lucifer part ways with levi feeling satisfied
and to his shock after you leave it settles, levi thinks he just might enjoy your presence
well, that’s a first for him.
he guesses what they say about opposites attracting is true

i watched red vs blue: zero with my dear friends today and i was asked to “post” my “thoughts” on the subject. Please do not click this readmore unless, for some reason, you want to read three thousand words on the subject of red vs blue: zero critical analysis. i highly doubt that’s the reason anyone is following me, but hey.
anyway. here you have it.
Here are my opinions on RVB0 as someone who has quite literally no nostalgia for any older RVB content. I’ve seen seasons 1-13 once and bits and pieces of it more than once here and there, but I only saw it for the first time within the past couple of months. I’ve literally never seen any other RT/AH content. I can name a few people who worked on OG Red vs. Blue but other than Mounty Oum I have NO idea who is responsible for what, really, or what anything else they’ve ever worked on is, or whether or not they’re awful people. I know even less about the people making RVB0 - All I know is that the main writer is named Torrian but I honestly don’t even know if that’s a first name, a last name, or a moniker. All this to say; nothing about my criticism is rooted in any perceived slight against the franchise or branding by the new staff members, because I don’t know or care about any of it. In fact, I’m going to try and avoid any direct comparison between RVB0 and earlier seasons of RVB as a means of critique until the very end, where I’ll look at that relationship specifically.
So here is my opinion of RVB0 as it stands right now:
1. The Writing
Everything about RVB0 feels as if it was written by a first-time writer who hasn’t learned to kill his darlings. The narrative is both simultaneously far too full, leaving very little breathing room for character interaction, and oddly sparse, with a story that lacks any meaningful takeaway, interesting ideas, or genuine emotional connection. It also feels like it’s for a very much younger audience - I don’t mean this as a negative at all. I love tv for kids. I watch more TV for kids than I do for adults, mostly, but I think it’s important to address this because a lot of the time ‘this is for kids’ is used to act like you’re not allowed to critique a narrative thoroughly. It definitely changes the way you critique it, but the critique can still be in good faith. I watched the entirety of RVB0 only after it was finished, in one sitting, and I was giving it my full attention, essentially like it was a movie. I’m going to assume it was much better to watch in chunks, because as it stood, there was literally no time built into the narrative to process the events that had just transpired, or try and predict what events might be coming in the future. When there’s no time to think about the narrative as you’re watching it, the narrative ends up as being something that happens to the audience, not something they engage with. It’s like the difference between taking notes during a lecture or just sitting and listening. If you’re making no attempt to actively process what’s happening, it doesn’t stick in your mind well. I found myself struggling to recall the events and explanations that had immediately transpired because as soon as one thing had happened, another thing was already happening, and it was like a mental juggling act to try and figure out which information was important enough to dwell on in the time we were given to dwell on it.
Which brings me to another point - pacing. Every event in the show, whether a character moment, a plot moment, or a fight scene, felt like it was supposed to land with almost the exact same amount of emotional weight. It all felt like The Most Important Thing that had Yet Happened. And I understand that this is done as an attempt to squeeze as much as possible out of a rather short runtime, but it fundamentally fails. When everything is the most important thing happening, it all fades into static. That’s what most of 0’s narrative was to me: static. It’s only been a few hours since I watched it but I had to go step by step and type out all of the story beats I could remember and run it by my friends who are much more enthusiastic RVB fans than I am to make sure I hadn’t missed or forgotten anything. I hadn’t, apparently, but the fact that my takeaway from the show was pretty accurate and also disappointingly lackluster says a lot. Strangely enough, the most interesting thing the show alluded to - a holo echo, or whatever the term they used was - was one of the things least extrapolated upon in the show’s incredibly bulky exposition. Benefit of the doubt says that’s something they’ll explore in future seasons (are they getting more? Is that planned? I just realized I don’t actually know.)
And bulky it was! I have quite honestly never seen such flagrant disregard for the rule of “show, don’t tell.” There was not a single ounce of subtlety or implication involved in the storytelling of RVB0. Something was either told to you explicitly, or almost entirely absent from the narrative. Essentially zilch in between. We are told the dynamic the characters have with each other, and their personality pros and cons are listed for us conveniently by Carolina. The plot develops in exposition dumps. This is partially due to the series’ short runtime, but is also very much a result of how that runtime was then used by the writers. They sacrificed a massive chunk of their show for the sake of cramming in a ton of fight scenes, and if they wanted to keep all of those fight scenes, it would have been necessary to pare down their story and characters proportionally in comparison, but they didn’t do that either. They wanted to have it both ways and there simply wasn’t enough time for it.
The story itself is… uninteresting. It plays out more like the flimsy premise of a video game quest rather than a piece of media to be meaningfully engaged with. RVB0 is I think something I would be pitched by a guy who thinks the MCU and BNHA are the best storytelling to come out of the past decade. It is nothing but tropes. And I hate having to use this as an insult! I love tropes. The worst thing about RVB0 is that nothing it does is wholly unforgivable in its own right. Hunter x Hunter, a phenomenal shonen, is notoriously filled with pages upon pages of detailed exposition and explanations of things, and I absolutely love it. Leverage, my favorite TV show of all time, is literally nothing but a five man band who has to learn to work as a team while seemingly systematically hitting a checklist of every relevant trope in the book. Pacific Rim is an incredibly straightforward good guys vs giant monsters blockbuster to show off some cool fight scenes such as a big robot cutting an alien in half with a giant sword, and it’s some of the most fun I ever have watching a movie. Something being derivative, clunky, poorly executed in some specific areas, narratively weak, or any single one of these flaws, is perfectly fine assuming it’s done with the intention and care that’s necessary to make the good parts shine more. I’ll forgive literally any crime a piece of media commits as long as it’s interesting and/or enjoyable to consume. RVB0 is not that. I’m not sure what the main point of RVB0 was supposed to be, because it seemingly succeeds at nothing. It has absolutely nothing new or innovative to justify its lack of concern for traditional storytelling conventions. Based solely on the amount of screentime things were given, I’d be inclined to say the narrative existed mostly to give flimsy pretense for the fight scenes, but that’s an entire other can of worms.
2. The Visuals + Fights
I have no qualms with things that are all style and no substance. Sometimes you just want to see pretty colors moving on the screen for a while or watch some cool bad guys and monsters or whatever get punched. RVB0 was not this either. The show fundamentally lacked a coherent aesthetic vision. Much of the show had a rather generic sci-fi feel to it with the biggest standouts to this being the very noir looking cityscape, which my friends and I all immediately joked looked like something from a batman game, or the temple, which my friends and I all immediately joked looked like a world of warcraft raid. They were obviously attempting to get variety in their environment design, which I appreciate, but they did this without having a coherent enough visual language to feel like it was all part of the same world. In general, there was also just a lack of visual clarity or strong shots. The value range in any given scene was poor, the compositions and framing were functional at best, and the character animation was unpleasantly exaggerated. It just doesn’t really look that good beyond fancy rendering techniques.
The fight scenes are their entire own beast. Since ‘FIGHT SCENE’ is the largest single category of scenes in the show, they definitely feel worth looking at with a genuine critical eye. Or, at least, I’d like to, but honestly half the time I found myself almost unable to look at them. The camera is rarely still long enough to really enjoy what you’re watching - tracking the motion of the character AND the camera at such constant breakneck high speeds left little time to appreciate any nuances that might have been present in the choreography or character animation. I tried, believe me, I really did, but the fight scenes leave one with the same sort of dizzy convoluted spectacle as a Michael Bay transformers movie. They also really lacked the impact fight scenes are supposed to have.
It’s hard to have a good, memorable fight scene without it doing one of three things: 1. Showing off innovative or creative fighting styles and choreography 2. Making use of the fight’s setting or environment in an engaging and visually interesting way or 3. Further exploring a character’s personality or actions by the way they fight. It’s also hard to do one of these things on its own without at least touching a bit on the other two. For the most part, I find RVB0’s fight scenes fail to do this. Other than rather surface level insubstantial factors, there was little to visually distinguish any of RVB0’s fight scenes from each other. Not only did I find a lot of them difficult to watch and unappealing, I found them all difficult to watch and unappealing in an almost identical way. They felt incredibly interchangeable and very generic. If you could take a fight scene and change the location it was set and also change which characters were participating and have very little change, it’s probably not a good fight scene.
I think “generic” is really just the defining word of RVB0 and I think that’s also why it falls short in the humor department as well.
3. The Comedy
Funny shit is hard to write and humor is also incredibly subjective but I definitely got almost no laughs out of RVB0. I think a total of three. By far the best joke was Carolina having a cast on top of her armor, which, I must stress, is an incredibly funny gag and I love it. But overall I think the humor fell short because it felt like it was tacked on more than a natural and intentional part of this world and these characters. A lot of the jokes felt like they were just thrown in wherever they’d fit, without any build up to punchlines and with little regard for what sort of joke each character would make. Like, there was some, obviously Raymond’s sense of humor had the most character to it, but the character-oriented humor still felt very weak. When focusing on character-driven humor, there’s a LOT you can establish about characters based on what sort of jokes they choose to make, who they’re picking as the punchlines of these jokes, and who their in-universe audience for the jokes is. In RVB0, the jokes all felt very immersion-breaking and self aware, directed wholly towards the audience rather than occurring as a natural result of interplay between the characters. This is partially due to how lackluster the character writing was overall, and the previously stated tight timing, but also definitely due to a lack of a real understanding about what makes a joke land.
A rule of thumb I personally hold for comedy is that, when push comes to shove, more specific is always going to be more funny. The example I gave when trying to explain this was this:
saying two characters had awkward sex in a movie theater: funny
saying two characters had an awkward handjob in a cinemark: even funnier
saying two characters spent 54 minutes of 11:14's 1:26 runtime trying out some uncomfortably-angled hand stuff in the back of a dilapidated cinemark that lost funding halfway through retrofitting into a dinner theater: the funniest
The more specific a joke is, the more it relies on an in-depth understanding of the characters and world you’re dealing with and the more ‘realistic’ it feels within the context of your media. Especially with this kind of humor. When you’re joking with your friends, you don’t go for stock-humor that could be pulled out of a joke book, you go for the specific. You aim for the weak spots. If a set of jokes could be blindly transplanted into another world, onto another cast of characters, then it’s far too generic to be truly funny or memorable. I don’t think there’s a single joke in RVB0 where the humor of it hinged upon the characters or the setting.
Then there’s the issue of situational comedy and physical comedy. This is really where the humor being ‘tacked on’ shows the most. Once again, part of what makes actually solid comedy land properly is it feeling like a natural result of the world you have established. Real life is absurd and comical situations can be found even in the midst of some pretty grim context, and that’s why black comedy is successful, and why comedy shows are allowed to dip into heavier subject matter from time to time, or why dramas often search for levity in humor. It’s a natural part of being human to find humor in almost any situation. The key thing, though, once again, is finding it in the situation. Many of RVB0’s attempts at humor, once again, feel like they would be the exact same jokes when stripped from their context, and that’s almost never good. A pretty fundamental concept in both storytelling in general but particularly comedy writing is ‘setup and payoff’. No joke in RVB0 is a reward for a seemingly innocuous event in an earlier scene or for an overlooked piece of environmental design. The jokes pop in when there’s time for them in between all the exposition and fighting, and are gone as soon as they’re done. There’s no long term, underlying comedic throughline to give any sense of coherence or intent to the sense of humor the show is trying to establish. Every joke is an isolated one-off quip or one-liner, and it fails to engage the audience in a meaningful way.
All together, each individual component of RVB0 feels like it was conjured up independently, without any concern to how it interacted with the larger product they were creating. And I think this is really where it all falls apart. RVB0 feels criminally generic in a way reminiscent of mass-market media which at least has the luxury of attributing these flaws, this complete and total watering down of anything unique, to heavy oversight and large teams with competing visions. But I don’t think that’s the case for RVB0. I don’t know much about what the pipeline is like for this show, but I feel like the fundamental problem it suffers from is a lack of heart.
In comparison to Red vs. Blue
Let's face it. This is a terrible successor to Red vs. Blue. I wouldn’t care if NONE of the old characters were in it - that’s not my problem. I haven’t seen past season 13 because from what I heard the show already jumped the shark a bit and then some. That’s not what makes it a poor follow up. What makes it a bad successor is that it fundamentally lacks any of the aspects of the OG RVB that made it unique or appealing at all. I find myself wondering what Torrian is trying to say with RVB0 and quite literally the only answer I find myself falling back onto is that he isn’t trying to say anything at all. Regardless of what you feel about the original RVB, it undeniably had things to say. The opening “why are we here” speech does an excellent job at establishing that this is a show intended to poke fun at the misery of bureaucracy and subservience to nonsensical systems, not just in the context of military life, but in a very broad-strokes way almost any middle-class worker can relate to. At the end of the day, fiction is at its best when it resonates with some aspect of its audience’s life. I know instantly which parts of the original Red vs Blue I’m supposed to relate to. I can’t say anything even close to that about 0.
RVB is an absurdist parody that heavily satirizes aspects of the military and life as a low-on-the-food-chain worker in general that almost it’s entire target audience will be familiar with. The most significant draw of the show to me was how the dialogue felt like listening to my friends bicker with each other in our group chats. It required no effort for me to connect with and although the narrative never outright looked to the camera and explained ‘we are critiquing the military’s stupid red tape and self-fullfilling eternal conflict’ they didn’t need to, because the writing trusted itself and its audience enough to believe this could be conveyed. It is, in a way, the complete antithesis to the badass superhero macho military man protagonist that we all know so well. RVB was saying something, and it was saying it in a rather novel format.
Nothing about RVB0 is novel. Nothing about RVB0 says anything. Nothing about it compels me to relate to any of these characters or their situations. RVB0 doesn’t feel like absurdism, or satire. RVB0 feels like it is, completely uncritically, the exact media that RVB itself was riffing off of. Both RVB0 and RVB when you watch them give you the feeling that what you’re seeing here is kids on a playground larping with toy soldiers. It’s all ridiculous and over the top cliche stupid garbage where each side is trying to one-up the other. The critical difference is, in RVB, we’re supposed to look at this and laugh at how ridiculous this is. In RVB0 we’re supposed to unironically think this is all pretty badass.
The PFL arc of the original RVB existed to show us that setting up an elite team of supersoldiers with special powers was something done in bad faith, with poor outcomes, that left everyone involved either cruel, damaged, or dead. It was a bad thing. And what we’re seeing in RVB0 is the same premise, except, this time it’s good. We’re supposed to root for this format. RVB0 feels much more like a demo reel, cutscenes from a video game that doesn’t exist, or a shonen anime fanboy’s journal scribbling than it feels like a piece of media with any objective value in any area. In every area that RVB was anti-establishment, RVB0 is pure undiluted establishment through and through.
