AITA for telling my friend to not tell their crush how they feel?

So my (16 M) friend (16 M) who we will call T is a very close friend of mine despite us only being friends for about 7 months. He recently went through a super traumatic break up. Like he walked to my house crying and was threatening his life it was that bad, but I’ve always been there to try and help him. I’ve also introduced him to my friend group which consists of 5 boys and 1 girl, who we will call L. L and me had been friends for years. Since we’ve been 4. Me and her aren’t super close but she is definitely someone I would put in my emergency contacts. I love her. She is one of my best friends and her and my boyfriend are also super close. She also had just gotten rejected by her long time crush. She is a very skittish lady and romance isn’t her top priority. She also has just met T. Like. Very recently. They have had 2 conversations maybe and that was in the last 2 weeks.

Now, here is where I might be the asshole. So T tends to be very dramatic. He exaggerates a lot of things and makes them seem a lot worse than they actually are. Like for example, he said his family would make fun of his previous girlfriend, when actually they were just teasing him about even having one and saying he was a lover boy (I’ve heard these conversations myself) Recently, T has told me that he had a crush on someone in our friend group and that he was thinking about telling them. This concerned me, because 5/6 people in our group had partners, except L, who he barely knew. So when I asked him who, he made me do a bunch of tasks to find out, which annoyed me because I didn’t really care THAT much, but he insisted I did them. When I found out it was L, I was extremely confused, and I mentioned how he spoken a handful of words to her. He said that it didn’t matter because he was in love with her and was going to tell her. I strongly advised him not to, because he was far from her type, she would reject him, and future hang outs would be awkward or people wouldn’t want to come. He told me that he would think about it and one of our other friends told him to play the waiting game, which I reminded them that L had just got rejected and it would probably be awhile (like. Years) before she was ready to date again. T told me that I was discouraging him, which has started to make me mad. I’m starting to think he only likes L for her looks and not actually for HER. I recently asked him after one of his rants about her if he even knew her middle name, which he replied with “no, but we played Minecraft last night! I’m advancing into friend level!”

That irked me bad. You should ALREADY be friends with someone you have a crush on. I’m thinking about dropping him as a friend because he has said some kinda racist remarks about how black actors can’t play stereotypically white characters because it’s either “not historically accurate” or “not the same as the original source material” and this whole situation isn’t helping me. I just wanna protect my friends.

Random question (feel free to ignore! /gen): Have you become interested in any new fandoms recently? If so, why, and which ones?

I have!

 So, I’ve been poking around Danny Phantom for a few years, haven’t published anything other than a cute little crossover fic but I have a whole folder dedicated to them - I like the vibes, the way it can be played to horror or trauma or just for sillies. And I like playing with dead things! The cast is fun too; everyone has their little things but they’re still a team.

 I’m most active currently in Harry Potter as far as writing goes, but reading wise I’ve been on a huge DC kick - mostly batman, but it’s fun to branch out when I get the chance.

 I also stumbled onto the Winx corner of Ao3 a month or so ago; specifically DragonflyxParodies’ A Fable, Agreed Upon series - I’m feral over them. Go read it, it’s lovely. And there are so many cool winx rewrites and redesigns floating around tumblr, it’s so much fun.

  Let’s see, what else; I periodically check in to minecraft smp fandoms; there’s so many options and so much lore to catch up on that it scares me, but it all looks so cool and I really want to catch up and know all the little references I keep seeing.

 I’ve been a Scooby-Doo Gremlin since I was two, and it’s hard to find SD fics that scratch the itch but there’s loads of lovely fanart.

 I can be caught periodically getting very excited about The Coldest Girl In Coldtown by Holly Black; it’s a vampire novel with a lot of really cool worldbuilding and a cast I’d die for.

 Let’s see, what other new fandoms... Megamind’s not new, but it’s been a while since I checked in; once again I think it’s really fun to see the worldbuilding opportunities, and the character dynamics are glorious. 

Other than that: I started watching Only Murders In The Building, and Lucifer recently - I didn’t expect to like either of them as much as I have. Lucifer is way more fun than I thought it’d be, and the characters are exasperating but not in an annoying way. OMITB is interesting but I get so much second hand embarrassment that I can’t binge it. My roommates are also doing a great job of luring me into the Studio Ghibli fandoms - those movies are emotionally dangerous but absolutely adorable, I’ve enjoyed them.

2. when was the last time you cried?

uhhh probably when i was still getting over my ex and it was still raw. i got close to it during a rush at work literally today and i had like 5 orders to do alone and i got scared and i just like. profusely apologized for the wait and they were like “well you shouldn’t be alone anyways” and i was like idk sorry i guess

3. do you have kids?

no and i don’t plan to for a long time. i’m literally 19

4. do you use sarcasm a lot?

not really? i’m bad with detecting sarcasm a lot when it’s subtle but when you do the whole fake voice thing, then i get it. idk if it’s just the social anxiety in me or what

5. what sports have you/do you play?

so i dabbled a bit in elementary school and middle school but sports have never really been my thing. i did basketball camps in elementary school but i was not good at it, and then i did volleyball camps from fifth grade to seventh grade. i was part of the volleyball team in seventh grade but i wasn’t good and i wasn’t like already part of their crew so i wasn’t treated very well. but i joined tennis in eighth grade and i loved it and i played it up until my senior year of hs when covid cancelled our season. i was more into music, i did band and played french horn in middle school, and have done choir and theatre from fifth grade all the way up to my senior year.

6. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

i’m good at reading people’s faces. i can tell if someone doesn’t like me even by the twitch of an eyebrow. but usually i notice their eyes and smiles first. windows to the soul, am i right? i’m really bad at eye contact when people are also looking so it’s a bit awkward lol. i also love people’s smiles, and i’m able to match emotions p well

7. scary movies or happy endings?

so i used to be big into happier movies, like i would actively avoid movies that made me feel bad cause i didn’t want to feel like that. but once i took my film class in my second year of college i’ve appreciated movies that make me sad and uncomfortable. there’s so much i missed on by being afraid of feeling bad. i really enjoy psychological horror/thrillers, but i’m not into super gory or jumpscare-filled horror movies. think like full metal jacket, ones that make me feel scared in a tense way rather than just violence, although fmj has both

8. any special talents?

depends on what you call special. i did art for two years for college so i’m not too bad at that. i can sing but i haven’t sung in a non-private manner since high school so i’m pretty rusty. i’m not really that special when i think about it and i’m pretty ordinary. but i can make good coffee i guess.

9. where were you born?

north-eastern wisconsin and i barely have left the state in my life other than week-long vacations to florida as a small child that i barely remember.

10. what are your hobbies?

i still draw in my free time, even though i’m still working through my burnout. i like walking around town and driving for fun, i read and play video games but i’ve kinda been falling out of that. i like animal crossing, minecraft, destiny 2, and f1 21 (the only good one on xbox game pass). but i’m not very good at racing games yet cause i don’t have a wheel, i’m on controller. if you consider my hyperfixations hobbies, im big into f1 rn but in the recent past i’ve been really into total drama island, and mcyt (but i barely talk about that anymore)

11. do you have any pets?

yes! back at home i’ve got two cats named rudy and hermey, they just turned 19 in may and they may sound old but they are still kicking it and oh so sweet. they’re brothers and i’ve had them all my life and i love them. i also have a corgi who’s like 7 and she’s super sweet and bouncy and i love her

13. fave subject in school?

i liked art, choir, and english a lot. i actually loved writing papers about things i read and my teachers kept them as “examples” to show future students if they were confused so i take that as a personal W

14. dream job?

if you had asked me this like. 8 months ago i would have told you i would like to be a storyboard illustrator for movies or tv shows and stuff like that. however i am so burned out of everything except mindless sketch studies that i don’t know if i want to do that anymore. i’ve been oddly into engineering lately (literally only because of F1) and even though i didn’t enjoy math as much i’m willing to put it aside and work at it for the sake of a possibility of working for F1 one day.

15. eye color?

green with like. brown highlights. it’s not hazel but it’s also not fully green. i’ve been told i also have blue around the outside which idk about that. it’s like the dark blue ring with green and very little brown highlights.

I don’t have much time for it these days, so I play way less than I used to. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And I often don’t actually finish things.

Nowadays I tend to cycle between not playing anything at all for months, and then playing way too much of something for a few days instead of sleeping. And then finding some self control and not playing anything for a long while again 😂

I think the last game I finished all the way through was Hollow Knight, which I adored. I finished Subnautica sometime in the last few years, too, and had a lot of fun with that as well. Same with Hades.

I played Portal and Portal 2 years ago and loved them; I’ve been debating doing a replay sometime, now that it’s been long enough that I won’t just have the puzzles memorized.

I’ve never finished Fallout 4 but I play it sometimes — usually I get side tracked building up settlements instead of following the main story sldkdjfhf

I’ve been playing a bit of Baldur’s Gate 3 recently — I think I’m just about to hit act two? And a friend has had me playing a bit of Midnight Suns.

I play The Long Dark once in a blue moon — I seem to keep digging it out around Christmas each year.

I play social games — used to play super smash brothers with my friends all the time, before I moved.

And every once in a while I’ll make truly poor life choices and start playing the Sims or Civilization or zoo simulators or Stardew or Minecraft and such — open-ended time sinks that I invariably get hyperfocused on for a solid week, hah. 😅

I’ve been wanting to try more stuff! I know there are some lovely games out there. I want to try some of the big names — The Witcher games (I have been poking at Witcher 2 a bit, actually), and Dragon Age. I want to finish Pillars of Eternity sometime, because what I’d seen of the writing so far was fascinating — there’s a little side quest near the beginning of the game that still lives in my head rent free, years later. Since I liked Hollow Knight, I keep considering Dead Cells. Etc.

And I’ve also wanted to try more story-focused short form stuff for a while now. I’ve been eyeballing The Stanley Parable, and Ghost Trick, and Observation.

But, well… time is still a factor :’D So, again. I don’t actually play things very often anymore.

a list of things that got me through this week (aka the world is beautiful and I’m finally able to perceive and appreciate it for the first time in months)

not only killed a job interview but got accepted on the spot! (my supervisor seems super nice AND it turns out one of my really good friends also applied/got the job and we’re going to be work besties!!!)

played the new minecraft update and had an out of body experience once I saw the cherry groves (+ managed to hop on vc with a friend, both vc-ing and friend-ing is something that I haven’t done a whole lot of recently)

had a chemistry class that I Understood Fully and enjoyed the class the entire time (it has been months since I’ve even come close)

got some packages ready to be sent to some friends

talked and had a lot of genuinely fun and good interactions with people I care about

reconnected with a friend I hadn’t seen in over half a year + watched a musical with them!! (also we went yarn shopping together so she’s stuck with me for LIFE)

got my textiles project back (a fun little crochet bag) and got a 100% on it

had an absolutely amazing choir concert today

sang songs at the top of our lungs as my friend drove me home

as I’m writing this list I’m realizing that there might be more good things that I didn’t write down and !!! i am able to experience good things and it’s not a struggle !!! i am full of so many moments of laughter and joy and i can appreciate them !!! it’s like a breath of fresh air. Fuck man

So I recently got minecraft. And I’m having a lot of fun ^^ Spent enough years just watching youtubers play and now I can do it myself aha

I found a village and decided it was easier to settle there for my first survival foray, build up their jobs and rework buildings and such. Sometimes doing the farm work gets me in the stardew brain where the day is already set on farming and micromanaging the villagers, and I’d have to actively choose to go mining and leave the villagers on their own.

Building has been fun, trying to learn how to work with proprotions and block count and materials. I’ve mostly done some small things here and there like some little houses and workshops for the villagers, a (failed) storage warehouse, and a lil fishing dock.

My proudest builds tho are a little nether portal hut, just to keep it closed off in case anything comes through, and a big animal pen I finished today ^-^ I already have more ideas in mind to try and build, but I want to finally go out and explore for more biomes and materials.

All the little builds I’ve made under cut. Keeping it to survival for now rather than the creative works I‘ve tried, especially since some of my creative work has been testing for my survival builds so far.

It’s been so long (well for me)

I’m pretty confident my anonymous readers have now ghosted their idea of me or my page. I’ll miss you, just because it warmed my heart knowing I’m being heard from afar. :)

I actually don’t want to ruin this page/account bc I have such great yet sad memories of the things I’ve posted and reshared on here and it warms the younger me. I am currently now 25 years old and I’m thinking about making a new account… not sure yet.

2025 is a new year and definitely a lot of things I’ve gathered from myself from the past few years, the good and bad.

The bad: I’m no longer sweet (so I’m told), I’m not as soft and nice like I once was. My humor has changed. My voice has changed. The tone in my voice, has changed. The way I observe things have changed. I have a foul mouth. I’m negative. Many more ..Though, there are reasons for all of these changes. I’m not going to point fingers but it seems that there’s been many arrows in my path that I am trying to avoid.

The good: I am kind. I am considerate. I am giving. I am definitely louder (which actually drives me insane considering how quiet I used to be.) I can be very excited. I am curious. I am generous. I am grateful. The most important thing is, I forget that I am loved.

I want to start off by saying I feel like I can’t write anymore. I mean, I’ve never written anything great but I notice something you won’t understand. Anyways, 25, crazy— I always feel like getting “older” .. I’ve always thought it was a myth cause pfft, not me. I’m supposed to stay young forever—duh. NOPE. You’ll notice changes in your skin, hair, and body. Its saddens me to the core but I was just in a stupid denial lol. Also, girl calm down “25 isn’t old” I KNOW BUT I FEEL LIKE IM STILL 19 or 20. It sucks sooo much.

But I do like the benefits of being old than 21 ;)

I’ve gotten closer to my family a lot. Especially my immediate family, which I honestly thought there was no saving. Friendly advice with living in a shit home, it does get better. No matter how horrible your relationship is, it will soon disperse. It took many many MANY tries but you just have to play by ear when you get older.

Friends? God I’m so odd and weird. Idk how to, yanno, keep friendship without getting annoyed all the time (yes I know I blame myself which is why I’ll gladly accept the 2 friends that I have)…. I lied. I never know what “friends” mean. I’m complicated. I have one guy best friend who I can hang with and have been friends for with since kids. He’s super chill, a girls girl, and isn’t annoying. Then there’s this girl but I’ve drifted away from her.. we still talk, just not regularly. I met her through my job. She was funny. I do have a few of gaming friends tho. But I draw a line in that bubble between “online” and “in person”

Boys? Pfffftt. What even is that. I don’t see myself getting married either. If I did holy fuck.

My job suckssss but the money is good sometimes. Mentally and physically I’m checked the fuck out from that place

I learned how to play Minecraft a lot recently and now I. Cannot. Stop. My eyes burn, my posture is fucked, and sleeping schedule is still the same. Terrible. I still can’t get a full 8 hour sleep, not even when I was in school YAY :D but building a lot of cool stuff is fun. Fortnite is still fun ofc

I’ve recently started to love and subscribe a few people on YouTube. I was never a podcast fan but only for Bad Friends. They are so hilarious. Absolutely love it. Kai Cenat is also a G. Adore his videos and his shopping experiences at Walmart. Last but not least can’t forget CASEOH. Hehe, the best <3 those are just my top 3

I suck at gyming. Lifting weights is great and all but I feel like I’m beefy. I definitely prefer the High Intensity Hit Training. I love the idea of my whole body moving and getting my heart pumped. But I stopped going for almost a month because I got caught up with working 12-13 hour shifts back to back so I had no rest, no motivation, and no fuel. Then I went on vacation 3 weeks ago and finally came back and started my gym again. It definitely feels good to be back for the most part.

Omg I’ve been seeing so many people I know from highschool and if you know me, I PANIC. Why? I don’t know!! What if I say hi and I don’t get noticed back and I’m like ok great imma kms rn cause I look like a fool… But when I don’t say hi they notice me and I look like an asshole LIKE WHAT DO YALL WANT FROM MEEE. Also what if they judge my appearance or something idk what if they catch me in my ugliest form, no makeup, leggings, weird oversized top, and shitty hair LIKEE… do people want conversation during their shopping? Pumping gas? Working out??

I’m running out of whatever more comes to mind. Also bc my hands are cramping with how I’m holding my phone rn.. it’s 1:59 am currently so I should prolly dip

Hello, my name is Goose, and today, I will be telling you about Minecraft as a medium for storytelling. In other words, this is what my 10 years of Minecraft special interest have been building to. Buckle up. I’ve been a fan of Minecraft since I was a little kid. I played Pocket Edition with my cousins for large portions of my young life. I had my first interaction with scripted Minecraft content when I was around 8, and I became a fan of DanTDM and his custom mod adventures. They were small, self-contained stories that were tied together by location (the lab), and characters (Dan, Trayaurus, Grim, and other occasionally recurring characters). The showcases had their own plots, and while self-contained, they were what got me interested in the potential for stories to be told in Minecraft.

A lot of what makes Minecraft a good medium for storytelling is its versatility. Minecraft is a sandbox game where quite literally anything can be created. Textures and skins and landscapes can be modded and changed to fit any setting. It’s just as possible to build a giant medieval castle as it is to build a futuristic spaceship in the far reaches of space as it is to build a modern city with high rise apartment buildings. Skins can be modified to look like anything, so they can be anyone while still making it possible to maintain a sense of cohesion between different characters in the universe. It is possible to tell any story so long as you have the imagination and dedication to make it.

However, when most people think of storytelling within Minecraft, they’re typically not thinking of fully scripted and acted content. They’re usually thinking of SMP Style storytelling, Challenge Style storytelling, or Death Game Style storytelling (or, as of recent events, maybe Parkour Civilization, but we’ll get to that later), where the content is less scripted out in most cases. SMP Style, for sake of consistency, will be defined here as the style of storytelling in Minecraft in which the characters are players on a survival Minecraft server not centered around the idea of winning a specific game. Examples of SMP style include Empires SMP, Dream SMP, Hermitcraft, Lifesteal SMP, Dominion SMP, Skyblock Kingdoms, and many others. Challenge Style is when a story is told through a video of the creator aiming to complete a set challenge, and while not required, it is often in a solitary environment or a collaborative environment. In most cases, it’s the archetype of man vs nature or man vs god (or some other unseen force) to use a shorthand. This includes things like 100 Days Challenges, Escape Room Challenges, Lucky Block Challenges, etc. Finally, Death Game Style is fairly self explanatory. This is when a story is told from a group of people being placed in a world with a goal to be the last one standing. This includes the Life Series, Deceit SMP, Secret Rivals, Art of Survival, and many, Many, MANY others.

The reason this is important to clarify is because of a key narrative difference between most fully scripted Minecraft content (e.g. MyStreet and other similar series) and the other varieties of MCYT style: the fourth wall and the eighth wall. The fourth wall is a commonly known concept to explain the separation between a piece of media and its audience. Characters inside of something acknowledging or talking to the audience that exists outside of their reality as a narrative is breaking the fourth wall. Minecraft Youtube inherently has an additional layer of fourth wall, which can be referred to as the eighth wall. To put it simply out of context of Minecraft, but still in the context of gaming, breaking the fourth wall is when a game directly addresses the player instead of the character they’re playing as or acknowledges that the character is a player, and breaking the eighth wall is when a game directly addresses viewers of a player. This gets a little weirder when put into the context of Minecraft Youtube. The walls within a Minecraft series are the fourth wall, “the wall between a player and their character in terms of their actions in game and the way they treat the video game,” and the eighth wall, “the wall between the character and the audience in terms of how aware those two groups are each other and how much bearing it has on the first layer. …[T]he player (though not always the character) is aware that their goal is to tell a story that people will be interested in coming to, and because of that, MCYT videos are often structured very differently from other more traditional [Let’s Plays]. Part of this is deciding, consciously or not, how aware the player character is of the audience beyond the second wall. There are a lot of different ways of addressing this; often the in-universe characters may on some level be aware that their world functions as that of a video game, but not that they have an audience, or they may alternatively be aware of their audience but not that they are in a story, or they may know that they have an audience but not that they are in a video game” (Solar, SBK Community Server).

Examining Aphmau’s Minecraft Diaries is a good way to illustrate different levels of presence between the fourth and eighth walls. Early episodes of Minecraft Diaries have little to no separation between the player and the character, and as the character is the player, the character is aware of the audience and usually speaks directly to them. It is a Let’s Play with some present storytelling elements. Due to scripting, some elements of the plot are known to the player and the audience, but not yet to the character. Later on in the series, there is more distinction between the player and the character. Despite still using the Minecraft interface and mechanics, and even using a face cam most of the time, Aphmau as a character becomes less and less aware of the audience and Aphmau as a player and series creator. By Season 2, the face cam is gone, and from the character’s perspective, there is no player or audience, though specific Minecraft functions such as the hotbar are still present. Then, there’s Diaries Rebirth, which is completely devoid of any first-person Minecraft interface, and Minecraft is more of a style in which to tell the story instead of a basis for a world. In Diaries Rebirth, I would argue that the complete lack of player presence beyond functioning as actors to move the characters makes it only exist with a fourth wall separating the characters inside the videos and the audience watching them on a screen.

When a story is told in the style of Diaries Rebirth, separated from the Minecraft interface, using outside cameras, and eliminating certain elements of “Minecraft Logic” (e.g. inventories, hotbars, health bars, experience, etc.), that elimination of acknowledging player existence, at least on a purely baseline, textual level, and removal of the second layer of fourth wall, makes it different to analyze than other forms of MCYT storytelling, which can depend on the implication of certain things about Minecraft as a baseline, such as taking damage, respawning, inventories, gamemodes, etc.

This is where I’m going to get into Parkour Civilization before talking more about the other common styles of storytelling. I will only be talking about the first Parkour Civilization video because I haven’t finished the second one yet, but that shouldn’t really impact my overall point about it. For those unaware of the craze taking the Minecraft Youtube community by storm, Parkour Civilization is a series of videos created by a Youtuber named Evbo. It exists both as a series of 21 ten to twenty minute videos, as well as two “full movies,” which are each around two hours long. It is a scripted series telling the story of Evbo as a character in Parkour Civilization, a world in which everything is parkour. You have to parkour to get around the world. You have to parkour to pay for things. You have to do parkour as a job. Literally everything is parkour. The series also contains commentary about class mobility and unjust systems within society.

The notable line from the very beginning of the series that has made its way into becoming a sort of meme format involves a character telling Evbo that to get food, he can make a one block jump for a piece of raw chicken, or a one block vertical jump for a piece of raw beef. This shows really well how Parkour Civilization depends on Minecraft mechanics like hunger, fall damage, the cursor highlighting blocks, and jump distance to tell its story because in doing so, it can use these shorthands that people familiar with Minecraft will already understand to effectively streamline its worldbuilding and story without getting bogged down in the minutiae of how the world works. The other interesting thing to note about Parkour Civilization is that while it is a fully scripted and acted story, it’s framed in its episode titles and some elements of how the story as told similarly to Challenge Style storytelling, specifically the Minecraft with a twist style of challenges (e.g. Minecraft but I survive in PARKOUR CIVILIZATION compared to videos like Minecraft but any block I touch is randomized). It’s interesting how Minecraft is not only the medium of the story, but an integral part of how the story is told and its messages are communicated to the audience. While the videos are fairly silly, I do think it’s incredible how a video can create a world that could not exist the same way in another medium. While it’s possible to tell a story with a similar structure and setup, it’s so heavily intertwined with Minecraft mechanics and concepts that it cannot be separated from Minecraft as a medium.

Now, getting back to the other major styles of storytelling, it’s important to clarify a difference between scripting and planning. Scripting, for the purposes of this essay, is when plot points are fully fleshed out, down to predefined actions and dialogue. Planning, for our purposes, is when certain plot points are planned to happen at some point, but the ways in which the characters may reach those points are not planned. To illustrate, scripting is a connect the dots puzzle, where there is a specific image as the end goal and a specific way that you are supposed to get there. On the other hand, planning is putting down a bunch of dots in a line and allowing people to draw things that aren’t a straight line between two points on the line. I’m going to be using these two terms here and there, so I’m setting up the difference in how they will be used here.

I think the idea that a lot of people miss when they’re thinking about SMP Style videos or really any Minecraft videos that are mostly improv is that most people making these videos are not professionals. They’re not professional actors or scriptwriters. They’re people getting onto the internet and having fun with their friends, then posting it where people can watch the fun they had with their friends. Most of the time, these people aren’t setting out to make art. They’re not trying to fully script out the next big thing in media that will be talked about for generations to come. They’re getting on Minecraft and building the cool ideas they’ve had, maybe doing some planning as well for a cohesion between their characters and builds or between their builds and the builds of their friends. Trying to compare the narrative improvisation that comes from SMP Style, where people are having fun and building on what they’ve already done as they go, to fully scripted and acted Minecraft content that’s trying to be a sort of movie doesn’t make sense. They’re not trying to fulfill the same niche within content, and a lot of the time they don’t have much in common beyond both being in Minecraft. Comparing these styles feels like comparing a random DND table to a fully produced Netflix show to me. Doing so doesn’t acknowledge what makes either interesting or compelling in a way the other may not have.

The reason I think SMP Style is so compelling is because you get to not only see the character and their struggles within the narrative, but also the player and the stories that they want to tell as a person living in the world with us. In the same video where you may see the epic climax of a character’s story that’s been built to for weeks or even months, you could see the creator so excited that they finally figured out why a certain part of their base looked weird and how they re-designed it to fix that. In the same video where a major antagonist that will be an integral part of the story is introduced for the first time, you can have the player explaining why they chose certain block palettes or providing a bit of behind the scenes for older lore that they thought was really cool. It’s that balance between seeing the characters and seeing the players behind them that makes SMP Style so cool to me. You get to see the epic highs and lows and adventures that may ensue, but you also get to see the people behind that, planning out cool stories and builds with their friends, who are excited to be able to share that with their audiences. Even with videos that are mostly or entirely lore-centered, you see the love and care that has been put into creating something that others will see and enjoy.

I think Challenge Style videos are compelling for the same reason that shows like American Ninja Warrior are compelling. It’s exciting to watch people face a challenge that we won’t encounter most of the time and root for them to win. In 100 Days Challenges, people put themselves into Minecraft worlds, often modded to be more hostile to live in, and try to survive 100 in-game days. These don’t always have an overarching plot within or between videos, but they still inherently tell a story. They tell the story of a character trying to survive in a new and unfamiliar world with only one life. Everything tells some kind of story, even if it’s not one with a defined plot structure with acts and rising action and falling action. Sometimes the story is that the character has been put in a seemingly inescapable room and needs to find a way out. Sometimes it’s just about rooting for someone to survive in the situation they’ve been put in. Sometimes it’s just about wanting to see people succeed at difficult things. Either way, it’s compelling because of the challenge to the player and how a character may be experiencing that within a sort of narrative.

I think Death Game Style is compelling because of the stakes (death, mainly) and the characters. There is an immediately established goal to be the last one standing. These characters are in a world where the winner takes all, and that inherently shapes how both the players and the characters interact with the world and each other. As a base concept, the characters that exist in a world will always have their actions influenced by the rules of the world. However, there is something that does not always come from a world, but does always come from a death game: that aforementioned established goal. Every character within that world will view the end goal differently. Some will want it so badly they’d betray their friends and allies that have had their back for the entire game. Others will not want to win, or will even detest the game for existing. Regardless of desire to win, the characters all participate in the game because that’s just how the world is set up. Part of the appeal is seeing how the different characters within the game react to it and interact with the world. As the game progresses, some players may have ideas for certain plot beats they want to hit, and a little bit of planning may happen, but in large part, death games are unpredictable, and a lot of plans may end up derailed by random chance. Additionally, with the built in conflict, as strained alliances are built and fighting begins, it’s easy for any character to be the hero from their own perspective. To them, they’re just trying to win. They’re doing what they have to. However, once you shift the viewpoint to that of another character, you often get a different view of their actions once you’re out of their perspective and not hearing their thoughts and justifications. This unreliable narration is present in most storytelling involving a first person perspective, but it almost seems to be amplified in the context of death games, potentially because these worlds encourage more drastic choices being made for the sake of being the last one standing.

In the end, as I mentioned before, Minecraft is so interesting to me because all of these different styles of storytelling can exist within the same medium and have different kinds of appeal. It’s versatile and allows for the creation of anything your creativity will permit. Even within a style of video, no two stories told will be exactly the same (except in the case of blatant plagiarism but that’s not what this essay’s about). It’s incredible how much can be conveyed with lighting and backgrounds and music and voice when motion is limited and facial expressions aren’t very possible. Anything could happen and the things that do are usually fun to watch if for no other reason that it’s really fun to see something that a person is really passionate about creating. That’s probably the simplest way to put why Minecraft works so well for telling stories. At the end of the day, it’s a game about creating your own story from a world, harnessing all it contains to work towards whatever goals you deem worthy. Sometimes the stories created are edited down with cool and interesting characters and posted online for us to see, or sometimes they may only exist in the mind of a single player. No matter how many or few people may know about the stories created, the potential for creation is why so many different stories can be told.

Maybe I should start using this blog to talk about my hobbies as well so that I can associate it with things I like. I like art, I do a variety of mediums. Watercolor, charcoal, graphite, trying to get into pastels and gouache, digital, not a fan of acrylic but I can do it, really want to try oil painting but I don’t have the space for it to dry.

I like reading classics a lot. Pride and prejudice is a fave rn and I impulse purchased Jane Austen’s entire works. Read the predecessor to Dracula, Carmilla. Very good. Very gay. Way more gay than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be subtext. It was not. I also like reading trashy books as well. I really enjoy the ones that TikTok recommends that have absolutely insane plot premises. I don’t care about the writing at that point I just need to read.

I’ve recently gotten into Overwatch. Never played a FPS before. Made a couple new friends from it. Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, I really wanna get into Celeste. On the second Ace Attorney game, I love mobile and gacha games, I wanna play more otomes even tho I’m not a big fan of romance when I am implicated.

I unmask a lot with this blog and every time I reread a post I can’t help but think of how bland it is and how I’d never talk like that in real life.

My favorite game is Okami. Never met other people who like it. Very sad.

I watch anime, tho I do this thing where I’ll watch a popular anime a couple years after it comes out. And I tell myself that it’s to see if it lives up to the hype but honestly it’s bc I’ll have random moments in which I want to watch anime and then the only ones that come to mind are popular ones on social media years ago. I say my favorite is Bungou Stray Dogs but that’s actually my favorite manga not my favorite anime. My fav anime rn is probably High Card. Doesn’t have the highest budget but I like the premise so far and the characters. My favorite mangas are Bungou Stray Dogs, Kuroshitsuji, and Witch Hat Atelier (also not caught up on). I wanna start reading firefly wedding.

I read a lot of romance manhwas, mainly with female leads but I have a couple with male leads that I adore. I haven’t watched any tv shows in a while but I’ve been telling myself that I’m either going to watch Hannibal or Dexter. I’ve been wanting to consume more queer material involving women since I’ve found that despite being sapphic, very few women media shows up recommended to me. Favorite movie of last year was Bottoms. I watched it several times. I want to get into cdramas. The next film I see will either be The Handmaiden or Maja Ma. Or one of the Saw movies. Been on a Saw movie binge with friends. I find the themes inconsistent. An unforgivable crime.

There’s no actors I’m particularly into. Never got into anything Marvel aside from Spider Man. I plan on reading the comics soon bc a friend of mine really likes Spider man and I want him to know I care about his interests.

I’ve found a new enjoyment for figure skating. I have a couple of male skaters that I quite enjoy, but I’d like to watch more and eventually get into some female and ice dancing pairs as well.

I crochet. Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday. I graduate with my bachelors in the spring. I plan on doing my masters in IO psychology. My favorite color is blue and pink. I’ve been dying my hair for I think two years now. Maybe six months away from two. My friends say that I am surprisingly progressive in regards to my political views. I don’t know what that is supposed to mean.

I have a new car cause I recently got into a car crash. I’m very privileged. I don’t have to worry about money. I do regardless. I somehow have this personality disorder, and I have had one of the best life’s a child could have. Though every time I say that my friends say that’s weird considering the amount of trauma I’ve gone through. I think I have turned out well despite my circumstances. I like caring about other people. I’d like to make it my life’s goal to improve the life of somebody I don’t know yet.

Well, the dsmp has gone to shit for many reasons.

But if you do get into dsmp, blueberrytv on youtube is your best friend, they cut streams down to more digestible episodes so you can follow the story along. Yes it's long. Dear god it's long. Also @relaxxattack has a carrd that updated until fairly recently, i also recommended it many times.

The story was (i never thought i'd have to speak in past tense about it, the fucker seemed to drag through for decades in just 2 years) told through livestreams, quite a few of are lost forever because twitch deletes vods after 2 weeks and no one bothered to back them up. Also ignore everything after the disc war finale except quackity (and tales of the smp)

You can test the waters by watching Wilbur's L'manburg war video to see if you like the vibes. I usually recommend this, though it's not the earliest point in the story. (that would be tommy's disc war, which is also VERY important, but people tend to find him annoying at first, esp. 2020 tommy like jesus christ he was a different beast. Definietly watch it after the L'manburg independence, things will click.)

Sad-ist's animatics are classics that helped shape the story as it was being written. Watch them as you progress through.

Hermitcraft + Adjacent*

*as far as fandom/content creator overlap goes

1. Hermitcraft is more gameplay heavy. If you don't enjoy minecraft you're not gonna like it, but it's pretty straight forward. You find a youtuber and follow their series on youtube. People usually recommend Grian, GoodTimesWithScar, and Mumbo for beginners, (they are the most popular ones) and then you can branch out from there. Hermitcraft recap is a godsent if you want to know what's going on everywhere.

I personally loved season 8, it's also the shortest and the most lore-heavy. Really gives you a taste of what the series is like at its best.

2. The life series! (Third life, Last Life, Double life, Limited Life) again, find any participant want, then branch out if you want to. Lore is easy to find here, people were under pressure to make up stuff quickly because the series is short, and the result is funny, creative, and so so tragic.

3. People watch EvoSMP for grian, pearl and martyn lore but it really doesn't matter to anything that's going on right now. It's a good series, but Watcher (basically evil angel Grian) headcanons are far detached from it nowdays despite originating from it.

4. Yandere highschool! Do not watch Yandere highschool. No detail is worth it. Use adblock if you force yourself through it, no money for the creator he's an asshat and the other members apparently no longer talk to him.

QSMP

Since the last post, Quackity started the QSMP, in which spanish and english speaking youtubers play on the same server. It has roleplay but it's looser and less grimdark than the dsmp thankfully. They are on an island and they adopted little eggs that walk around and act all cute. It's streamed on twitch. Pick a person and look up their vods, if you're interested. Slimecicle is recommended to start with, and some spanish creators use english subtitles/translation mods. There aren't comprehensive sources to find every vod/video yet, since the server isn't that old.

it was a short interaction but it really meant a lot to you

so you asked for a picture to remember the moment by

after you took the picture you said your goodbyes and you were extremely excited

a few weeks after than interaction you had made the decision to start streaming

you were thinking about becoming one for a long time and after meeting sapnap you made your decision 

because you wanted to be the type of person sapnap was to you

and be a person someone looked up to and meet people that felt the way about you that you feel about sapnap

you’d been a streamer for a few months when you got a raid from sapnap himself

his viewers were suggesting he raided you so he did

you freaked out, you gained a small following and the fact that sapnap decided to raid you? amazed

but what you didn’t know was that he kept watching you

after he saw how appreciative you were he wanted to watch more and he got intrigued

so he followed you and started watching your streams almost every time you streamed whenever he wasn’t busy

after about 2 years of streaming you got a very big following

your supporters were stalking your twitter and found the picture of you and sapnap when you both met

they then began to repost it on twitter tagging the both of you

you saw it and replied, “LMAO i look so small. but big shoutout to sapnap for raiding me as a small streamer and making all this possible <3″

he saw your reply and his eyes went big

he then proceeded to respond to your tweet, “we’ve met before??”

and it went back and forward

“yeah, it was before i was a streamer, we met at like.. the grocery store lol”

“i literally had no idea you were a fan of me”

“yup, i’ve been for the past 3 years”

“dude after i raided you i started watching your streams and you became my favorite streamer”

“well,, you’re still my favorite streamer ;)” 

after that sapnap dmd you asking if you guys could meet in person again

you and karl met at twitchcon

you had recently become a big streamer and this was your 2nd time going to twitchcon

1st time having a meet and greet

meeting your supporters meant so much to you 

you finally get to give each of them a hug, and it may not be all of them but seeing this many people come out to meet you meant more than anyone could imagine

but being at twitchcon also meant you could meet your streamer friends 

which made everything 10x more exciting

you decided to meet up with your friend, valkyrae and you guys were going to a creator party

when you finally got to see her you gave her a huge hug that lasted a while because it was the first time you were meeting in person

once you both reached the venue of where the party was being held you all met up with your other friends. you hadn’t met any of them in person but rae had

you saw sykkuno, lily, michael, toast, and a few other people and smiled really big, excited to see all of them

you finally got to them and pulled them into a group hug

“you guys!! oh my god it feels so good to finally meet all of you!” you said.

“it’s nice to meet you in person, (y/n).” sykkuno said smiling at you

you let go of the hug and remembered everyone else that they were with

“hi! i’m (y/s/n) but you can just call me (y/n),” you said with a smile.

“this is karl, poki, and scarra.” toast introduced.

you saw karl and poki whispering to each other while you got into a conversation with everyone else.

poki coughed and said, “hey guys! don’t we have to go to that thing, right? that thing.” hinting at something, looking between you and karl.

you’re pretty sure everyone caught on and they all agreed.

“oh yeah! that thing!”

“yeah, we should probably go!”

“yup, don’t wanna be late to that thing.”

you looked at them with an unimpressed look as they walked away, looking behind their shoulders to see you and karl standing there.

“hi, i’m-i’m karl, i’m sorry about that. i just told poki that you’re like literally my favorite streamer and i guess she wanted us to talk more? i don’t know, but it’s really nice to meet you.” karl said.

you laughed as you quickly understood your friends weird behavior

“yeah, you raided me a few times- thank you for that by the way. it helped me a lot in growing my fanbase and i don’t think i’d be where i am if you hadn’t raided me.” you smiled at him. he beamed and smiled back at you.

“yeah, no, it was no problem. like i said you’re literally my favorite streamer and being able to help you with that is absolutely insane to me.”

for the rest of the party, your friends could see both of you talking the night away

and maybe even dance together

finding out what to do for stream was kinda hard when pretty much all your friends were busy

but then you got a text from karl, asking if you wanted to play jackbox with him and a few friends

you accepted, knowing you wouldn’t have anything else to stream

in the lobby it would be you, karl, dream, sapnap and a few other people you didn’t know

when it was finally time to play, you started up your stream and introduced what you’d be playing that night

“hey guys, welcome welcome, welcome. today i’m gonna be playing jackbox with karl, dream, sapnap, and a few other of karls friends.” 

you joined the vc and immediately heard a lot of boys talking very loudly

you let out a small, “hello?” 

somehow everyone heard you and stopped talking

“(y/n)!” karl yelled out.

dream and sapnap let out a “hi, (y/n)” and you said hello back.

“hi everyone, i’m (y/s/n) but you all can call me (y/n)” you introduced yourself.

eveyrone else said hi and introduced themselves

you found out you were playing with quackity, wilbur, tommy, and techno too

during mad verse city karl was going against quackity and his rap went something like this

“you talk so weird, i’m gonna need translator, next time (y/n)’s here they’re gonna be a hater, because your big crush on them i’ll see ya later”

your mouth was wide open while all the boys started teasing quackity

“what the fuck! i don’t have a crush on them!” 

quackity ended up losing that one.

after the game and you ended you stream you asked quackity to stay

“hi quackity,” you said, with an energetic voice

“... hey, (y/n)” 

“sooo, was what karl said true?” you asked.

“mm not necessarily. it’s not that i have a crush on you. you’re.. just my favorite streamer and you know. this is the first time i’m meeting you and i was telling all of them that i’m nervous because i’ve never talked to you before and i think you’re a great streamer and that you put out really funny content and i didn’t wanna embarrass myself but. karl did that for me.” he rambled

you giggled

“i think that’s really cute. thank you for supporting me. you can dm me on twitter or discord if you ever wanna play sometime.” you told him and left the vc.

you then saw all the boys you were playing with pile into the vc and you could only imagine what they were talking about.
