I'll Be There for You
The morning after the fire, an exhausted and bruised TK and Carlos find their family and friends have already taken steps to help them recover from their devastating loss.
Links: ff.net - AO3
Rousing slowly from a deep sleep, Carlos sighed in content as he instantly felt TK's arms wrapped protectively around his body. Burrowing further into the embrace, he ran his fingers over his boyfriend's arm as he enjoyed the moment of silence. If the alarm wasn't currently going off, then it must mean they had a day off, and Carlos smiled to himself already thinking of the best ways to spend their free time. Maybe they could go to the farmer's market, or take a walk at Zilker Park, or they could just stay at home and spend the whole day tangled together on the couch. All good possibilities, and even better when they all included TK close to him.
But then various sounds caught Carlos' attention, rhythmic beeping, voices he didn't recognize, doors slamming shut; all noises that didn't fit into their bedroom. And with his sense of hearing also came smell. Taking it all in, Carlos' frowned when he didn't easily recognize TK's distinct body wash that always clung to their sheets, but the smell of smoke mixed with antiseptic, neither of which belonged in their home. Opening his eyes, Carlos' frown deepened as he took in the unfamiliar surroundings. And suddenly a trapped door seemed to have opened below him and Carlos was falling. The memories of the days before overtaking him with such force that his breathing caught in his throat. Gasping for breath, Carlos' eyes went wide as he was assaulted by a coughing fit. All the memories and pain from the last two days returning to the forefront of his mind, and an empty feeling setting deep in his stomach as realization hit him all at once; he had fought with TK, then their home had gone up in flames.
"Carlos?" TK's asked, voice slurred and still laced with sleep and tiredness. "Are you okay?"
At any other moment Carlos would have felt guilty for waking up his boyfriend but right now he was panicking too much to really care. He tried to answer but only air escaped his parted lips, so instead he shook his head, desperate to let the other man know that he wasn't okay.
"Carlos?" TK asked again, carefully disentangling his body from Carlos' and turning around, his own eyes now going wide as he took in his boyfriend's look. "Carlos, babe, breathe. Everything is okay, we're okay." Paramedic mode instantly took over as TK grabbed Carlos' hand and placed it over his heart, hoping the beat would ground him. "Try to match my breathing. Please." Taking in deliberate slow breaths, TK locked eyes with Carlos, his other hand moving to his wrist to take in his pulse, even when there was a perfectly capable machine located to their right who could have told him that information. But TK needed the physical reassurance more than anything.
"That's good, Carlos. Just breath, slow and easy," TK continued to instruct as Carlos' breaths finally began to even out. And at that moment he could only be grateful that neither of them was currently hooked up to a heart monitor or the entirety of the hospital would have been descending on their room right about now. "Here, just breath." Grabbing the oxygen mask that he had been wearing the night before, TK set it over Carlos' mouth before moving his hand further up to Carlos' messy curls, and running his fingers through them, the motion usually able to put his boyfriend at ease.
"Sorry," Carlos mumbled as soon as he was able to take in a normal breath again, his cheeks looking slightly pink and his eyes cast downward.
Nodding, TK leaned forward and kissed Carlos' forehead, giving him a few extra seconds to compose himself.
"What happened?" TK asked eventually.
"I sort of had a panic attack?" Carlos offered not-so-helpfully.
Fighting the instinct to roll his eyes, TK just nodded again. "I figured as much, but why? For how long had it been going on before I woke up?"
"I, uhm, I…" Carlos struggled to find words, his lips parting a few times but only little, nervous exhales coming out.
"Take your time, I'm right here." TK continued to run his fingers through Carlos' hair, his other hand still holding Carlos' over his chest.
"I just woke up, and thought it was a day off. You know, the alarm wasn't on, so it only made sense. But then I remembered everything, the fight, the fire. And -"
"And it all became too much," TK finished for him, "it's alright, babe. But you're okay, we're okay."
"Are we?" Carlos asked softly.
"We are. We're still together and that's all that matters right now, we can worry about the rest later," TK said, not an ounce of doubt in his tone or mind. "Let me call for a nurse so someone can check you out."
"I don't need a nurse, I'm okay," Carlos interjected, his eyes still looking a bit disoriented but his breathing finally back to normal.
"Okay," TK easily agreed, "but we still need a nurse if we want to get out of here." Both TK and Carlos knew they didn't really need to spend the night at the hospital, the oxygen mask sure helped, but there was a reason they weren't hooked to many machines. Their injuries had been mild and they could have gone home after the doctor gave them a clean bill of health. But they had no home to go to, and everyone at the hospital knew that, and knew them, so someone must have decided to take pity on the pair and insisted they spend the night. But there were real patients that needed the room, and TK and Carlos didn't want to inconvenience anyone more than absolutely necessary.
"Yeah," Carlos said softly, briefly remembering his previous thought of spending the night at home tangled in the couch with TK, and he chuckled sadly. They didn't have a couch or home to go to.
TK noticed, but decided to let him be for now, and instead turned around to press the call bottom for a nurse. And soon enough someone was checking them over one final time before bringing in discharge papers and letting them leave, but not before what seemed like every single medical professional in that floor, stopped by their room to wish them their best and apologize for what had happened to them. Not that it was anyone's fault, but most people here knew the officer and firefighter turned paramedic, and were fond of the pair and not-so-secretly rooted for their relationship. It didn't surprise them -it was the sort of thing that came with the territory, both their jobs sending them to the hospital often, to drop or interrogate a patient, or with injuries of their own- but it did warm their hearts.
Walking into the waiting room, Carlos and TK were greeted by Owen, Gabriel and Andrea standing by the nurse's station, no doubt waiting for them.
"My boys." Andrea was the first to speak, only taking one look at the battered pair before she closed the distance and engulfed them both in a hug. "I'm so happy to see you both okay."
"Gracias, mami," Carlos whispered, closing his eyes and letting his mother's comforting presence and touch wash over him.
"How are you two doing?" Andrea asked when they broke the embrace, her eyes soft and pained as she took in their tired faces and slumped shoulders.
"We're alright," Carlos said, his voice timid and doubtful, even as he tried to make himself sound stronger.
"No, you're not, Carlitos. But you will be. And we're all here to help you both." Andrea spoke with the certainty, care and understanding that only a mother could provide, and both Carlos and TK found themselves standing a little straighter upon hearing her words. A little hope blossoming in their chests.
"Thanks, Andrea," TK answered this time, smiling to the woman he hoped was his future mother-in-law.
"Anytime, TK, anytime," Andrea said softly, moving her hand to cup TK's cheek and holding it there for a moment.
During the brief conversation, Owen and Gabriel had continued to stand next to the nurse's station, both looking uncharacteristically quiet and evidently trying to make themselves small. They had accompanied TK and Carlos to the hospital the previous night, Andrea staying in the ranch since Gabriel had driven there straight from work, but the silence between the four had been too charged so they had left early, promising to be back the following morning.
"TK," Owen eventually said, taking a couple of tentative steps forward, his eyes on TK but still looking at Andrea out of the corner of his eye.
"Dad."
"How are you feeling, son?" Owen asked, releasing a nervous breath.
"I'm okay," TK mumbled, still not sure how he felt about his father at the moment. Owen and Billy might have rescued them, but they wouldn't have been in that position if it hadn't been for Owen, Billy, and Gabriel keeping them in the dark, and taking too long to understand Raymond's threat. Painful detail which they had learned the night before when they asked Judd how they had gotten to the condo so quickly.
"Ready to go home?" Owen wondered.
"I -" TK hesitated, turning sideways to look at Carlos, and finding a blank look on his face. And TK wasn't sure if it was due to his earlier panic attack or because he was also having conflicting emotions seeing Owen and Gabriel again.
"You don't have to if you don't want to," Owen added quickly, deflating a little but his tone was even and calm.
"You should come with us to the ranch," Andrea offered, "I can prepare some soup for you, or anything else that your heart desires."
"Or to any of your friends' houses. You know they all offered," Gabriel pointed out, speaking for the first time, then wincing as soon as Andrea glared at him. "I'm just reminding them, vieja. No need to shoot daggers out of those beautiful eyes."
"Don't try to flirt with me right now, Gabriel Reyes," Andrea hissed. "You know that's never a good thing when you have made me this angry."
"What's going on?" Carlos asked, joining the conversation again after noticing how both fathers flinched at her words.
"Oh, your father knows, Carlitos. Nothing for you or TK to worry about. I already had a nice, long talk with Gabriel and Owen about what happened in this case, and they both know this isn't over." Andrea's tone was sweet, but her eyes were a storm of emotion, and all the thunder and lighting in it would be directed to the Ranger and Fire Captain in due time. "But, it's your choice boys. You can stay wherever you prefer," she added, well knowing Carlos and TK would be staying together in whatever place they picked, no way they were going their separate ways to each of their parent's houses.
At a sort of standstill, Carlos and TK turned to each other, easily communicating with their eyes as they both nodded silently. "We will stay at your place, dad," TK said softly, hating to be in this situation in the first place, having only moved into his new home less than three weeks ago.
"For now we just want to be closer to the city. We want to start looking for a new place soon, and I assume they're also going to want our statements," Carlos explained quickly, not liking the sad look that overtook his mother's eyes.
"There's time for that, mijo. Just focus on getting better now," Gabriel said, still hanging back and clearly avoiding his wife's gaze. Then he shook his head, and swallowed a few times, seemingly bracing himself. "I'm sorry for what happened Carlos. You too, TK. We're not proud of what we did, we just hope you can forgive us. Next time, if there's a next time, we will include you guys and not let you in the dark."
"Thank you, sir," Carlos said, his tone clipped, not really believing his father's words, and thinking that there would definitely be a next time because Owen and Gabriel seemed to have become a team of their own. "As for the statements, we'd rather just be done with it and put what happened between us as much as we can, so it's better to stay close. But we will head to the ranch this weekend," he added, looking directly at his mom as he finished.
Andrea perked up at that, her eyes regaining their spark. "That's great to hear, Carlitos. Anything special you want me to prepare for you?"
Carlos took a few minutes to mentally run over all of his mother's recipes, a small smile gracing his lips when he finally settled on one. "Chilaquiles? TK tried them at a restaurant a few weeks ago, and really liked them, but I keep telling him that yours are the best."
For a moment Andrea looked horrified that Carlos took TK to eat one of her signature dishes at a restaurant instead of asking her to make them, but remembering what they just went through, she decided to cut her son some slack. "Chilaquiles, it is," she said with a smile that was so much like Carlos' that it almost made TK's heart burst.
"Pero bajo en picante, por favor," Carlos whispered, trying to casually point at TK who just glared at him.
Andrea chuckled, but nodded. "Don't worry, boys. I know our white boy isn't yet used to the Reyes' level of heat."
"Thank you," TK said shily, trying not to look as embarrassed as he felt, especially because he was more than used to that level, just not necessarily in the kitchen.
"No need, my sweet boy," Andrea said, patting TK's cheek again, before turning to her son, who had a big smile on his face because this level of love and interaction between his parents and his boyfriend was a dream come true. "Now, go. You had a long night and need to rest. Nos vemos el Viernes, mi corazón."
"Te amo, mami, gracias," Carlos moved forward and hugged his mother one last time, taking a moment to share a look with his dad who was still standing behind the group. He loved his father, and he knew he would forgive him eventually, soon actually, but his deception still hurt. Especially when it had caused a fight with his boyfriend and then almost cost them their lives. So he deserved some time to process his feelings.
When mother and son parted, Carlos moved to TK and held his hand, fingers instantly being intertwined, before they followed Owen towards the parking lot.
"Owen, you will take care of the boys, right?" Andrea asked with a pointed look, as she got into her husband's truck.
"I will, promise." Owen swallowed roughly, shifting uncomfortably under Andrea's unforgiving stare. Then turned to look at his friend, already sitting in the driver's seat, and shot him a sympathetic look. Gabriel would have it much worse than him as he was going home with the enraged mother. But he knew they would both be in the doghouse for the foreseeable future. And if he was honest with himself, Owen knew they deserved nothing less for being stupid enough to put a case over their sons.
-x-x-x-
Reaching Owen's house, Carlos and TK got out of the car and sadly walked to the front door. Both of them finding it hard to believe that the clothes they wore, and whatever they had left on their lockers at work, were their only material possessions at the moment.
"I already prepared TK's old room," Owen started as he moved to open the door, "but if there's anything missing or anything you want, please let me know."
"That's Mateo's room now, dad," TK said quickly, not wanting to take his friend's room for the second time in three nights.
"Nonsense, TK. That will always be your room," Owen pointed out, "besides, you know how many guest rooms we have. And Mateo was happy to move to one of those and finally have a place to make his own."
"He could have made the other one his own, dad, this is only tempo-" TK's words cut short as soon as the front door opened and his eyes landed on the many bags and boxes occupying his dad's living room. "What's all this?"
"This is all for you, boys," Owen said with a big smile on his face, his arms wide open as he pointed to the room.
"This is too much, Captain Strand, you didn't have to. We can't accept this," Carlos rambled, eyes wide as he took in the sight in front of him.
"I didn't, Officer Reyes. Everyone did," Owen explained proudly, his heart bursting with love because the team that he had put took together not even two years ago had really become a family, always ready to help each other. And whether that was after a shooting, concussion, falling off a bridge, or a house fire, didn't matter; they were just always there for each other. "And call me Owen."
"What do you mean everyone, dad?" TK asked, his expression a lot like Carlos', eyes full of surprise and joy even when some treacherous tears pricked at the corners.
"I mean everyone, TK. That box over there is from Judd and Grace," Owen began, pointing to a different box or bag as his explanation continued. "Paul brought those two bags with Marjan. Those three are from your parents, Carlos. And that big one is from your precinct, Mitchell and your sergeant dropped it off. Nancy and Tommy brought that box on the table, and Mateo bought some groceries he's sure you both like. Those are already on the fridge or kitchen counter."
Carlos and TK looked at each other, both at a complete loss for words. Tears not flowed freely down their faces as they leaned towards each other for a chaste kiss.
"And I got you this," Owen added, grabbing a plain cardboard box with a bow and giving it to TK, "for now. I ordered other things, but they're on the way and should be delivered sometime later this week."
Grabbing the box, TK had a heartbreaking sense of déjà vu as he remembered moving into Carlos' condo a few weeks ago and his dad handing him a similar box. Déjà vu quickly became reality when he opened the box to find another box inside, one for a new blender still in its original packaging.
"It's not Marlon," Owen began, taking a step closer to his son and putting his hand on his shoulder, "but you can name this one together. And I just wanted this to be the first kitchen appliance for your new home." Owen's voice broke at the end, and he had to blink his eyes a few times.
Setting the box on the ground, TK turned to his dad and threw himself into his arms, much like he had done that day back in NY when he OD. His shoulders then started shaking as all the emotions from the last days came pouring out of him. "When we got to the condo I thought we had lost you both, there was just so much fire and smoke already," Owen began softly, his eyes darkening as he remembered the brief moment when it felt like his heart had stopped beating as he came face to face with the inferno that had become his son's home. "I never wanted any of my decisions to trickle down to you, but it happened, TK, and I hate that I can't do anything about it now. My actions cost you and Carlos your home, and I'm just so very sorry." Opening one of his arms, Owen turned to the officer who was standing rooted in place looking at them, his own eyes clouded with tears. "Come here, Carlos."
Not needing to be asked twice, Carlos moved forward and hugged Owen too, his other arm going over TK's back. Not at home, but finally at a place where he felt safe and comforted, so he allowed his tears to fall once again.
When the three men finally broke the embrace, Owen turned to look at the man he hoped was his future son-in-law. "I also need to apologize to you, Carlos. That was your home before you ever opened it to my TK, and I'm sorry my actions took that away from you."
"It's okay, Owen," Carlos said, letting out a little chuckle as Owen smiled widely, and extending his arm to TK and pulling him towards his body, before kissing his temple. "The most important part that made that condo a home is still here with me, so I'm sure we can make another place our home. It will be hard, but we have help," he continued, pointing to all the things their friends had gotten for them. "And, I think my mom already laid into you and my dad because of what happened, so we should cut you guys some slack." Breathing slowly in and out, Carlos made a point to remember those words on Friday night so he could forgive his father too.
"She sure did, Andrea Reyes is a very scary woman, especially when her baby boy is involved," Owen said, laughing as Carlos' cheeks gained some color, "But you're very lucky to have such a strong and loving mother in your corner. You both are. At one point I wondered who was TK's parent because of how fiercely she spoke about you." TK let out a little, nervous chuckle after hearing those words, and his face turned a nice shade of red, but he said nothing.
Silence quickly overtook the room after Owen suggested the boys take a look at the items left for them, TK quickly squealing excitedly as he opened a box to find at least 7 hoodies, all in different colors, and all in his exact size, and various printed button downs with different patterns ranging from Hawaiian to colorful stripes, and dots, which must have been picked out by Marjan or Nancy. And Carlos quickly joined in TK's delight as soon as he looked into a bag from Paul to find a variety of polos and t-shirts, all in various shades of blue, dark green, grey and a couple black ones, along with some sleeveless gym shirts and some shorts. Finally, moving together to a box marked 'From Judd' in black Sharpie, they both frowned taking in its weight. Opening it, TK dropped his hands to his sides, and Carlos' eyes went a shade darker, as they took in the two fire extinguishers stashed inside.
"That one came with a note," Owen called from behind, handing them a small piece of paper.
'One for the kitchen, and one for the bedroom. We're glad you're both okay. PS: Offer still stands to come stay with us if your parents start driving you crazy. Just give me a call or shoot a text. Or even just show up at the door.'
"He must have heard us," TK whispered, choosing to focus on that inconsequential fact than over the enormity of that and this moment.
"Yeah," Carlos said, voice equally low. "I'm still sorry that -"
"Stop," TK interrupted before Carlos could get another word in. "No more apologies, we both already did, and now it's time to move forward." They had talked about it the previous night and both apologized, even when TK knew he was the only one that really needed to be forgiven.
Carlos nodded, grasping TK's hand and pulling him towards the boxes from his parents and coworkers. "Wow." Was his only response as soon as they began opening them, finding a new video game console along with games and an additional controller, various books, some of which were Carlos' favorites, along with new towels, and a couple of sheets for the bed.
"Everyone left receipts too," Owen pointed out, handing them a stash of paper. "Just in case there's something you'd rather exchange."
Taking in the receipts, TK shared a thought that had just occurred to him. "Dad, it's not even noon, and the fire happened last night. When did everyone have time to drop all this?"
"Oh, I'm not exactly sure, but I think the first knock on the door was at 7:30."
"Wow," TK exclaimed now, echoing his boyfriend's comment from a moment ago. "They didn't have to," TK added more to himself than anyone else.
"They didn't" Owen agreed, "but of course they would, you two are family to everyone that came to drop something. And you would have done the same for any and all of them."
"We would," TK and Carlos said in unison, sharing a smile, and then a more passionate kiss as they turned to look at each other.
"And that's my cue to leave." Owen chuckled to himself, already halfway to the kitchen. "I will be here making lunch, you boys just take it easy and relax. But don't be surprised if there's a knock or two on the door, I know a lot of people want to make sure you're both really okay."
Carlos and TK spent the next few hours opening all the boxes and bags, finding more clothes and other personal items, among other things, but true to Owen's words, they were interrupted every half hour or so by someone knocking on the door wanting to see how they were doing. At the end of the day, Carlos and TK not only had a lot of new items under their possession, but a fridge and kitchen counter full of dishes their friends had brought so they didn't have to waste time cooking and instead focused on their hunt for a new home.
"This one seems nice, the complex has a pool and gym," Carlos said later that night, when they had retreated to their room after eating dinner with Owen and Mateo. "What are you doing?" He turned around to show his phone's screen to TK with his newest Zillow discovery and snickered when he saw TK standing in front of the mirror
"Just trying on some of the new outfits," TK replied with the first sincere smile Carlos had seen in the last days, "need to pick something nice to wear to dinner with your parents on Friday." TK and Carlos had spent most of the afternoon thanking people in person or over the phone for their kindness, but now more than ever TK felt infinitely grateful for the gesture and the distraction and hope it had provided. It seemed that when the world was determined to show them how dark it could get, their friends were there to shine their light upon them.
"I like this one," Carlos said, holding a blue and white button down to TK, before turning back to his phone and continuing to browse the app after bookmarking his latest find.
TK nodded and grabbed the shirt, picking an outfit for Carlos to try and throwing it to him with no words but a little smirk on his face.
Not being able to deny his boyfriend anything, Carlos set his phone on the bedside table, and joined TK in front of the mirror. Taking off his shirt so he could try the one TK had selected for him.
TK's eyes darkened as he took in his boyfriend's body and he had to bite his bottom lip to stop it from quivering. "On second thought, I like you better that way," he whispered, taking back the shirt and throwing it onto a chair. Moving his hands to Carlos' hips, he began to run his fingers over every inch of exposed skin. Their lips colliding a second later.
"I can go to the ranch naked, I don't think my mother would approve," Carlos breathed against TK's lips when they parted for breath.
"We can continue playing dress-up tomorrow, but you can be naked for me tonight," TK croaked, his hand on Carlos' wrist as he pulled him towards the bed. "We need to finish what got interrupted yesterday."
"Your dad and Mateo are here," Carlos hissed, but still followed.
"They can just wear headphones," TK said with a smug grin, "besides, they insisted we stay here. What did they think would happen after surviving that fire yesterday? I doubt they thought we would go for a run or the gym to release all this pent-up energy and emotions."
Carlos and TK had survived the fire the night before and today their parents and friends' actions had warmed their hearts, but now it was time to create some heat of their own.

“And They Were Soulmates?” - Reddie
I’m rewriting this into a Reddie Oneshot.
Warnings: swearing, slight homophobia mentions
Requests are open.———————————————————————
After the phone call with Mike, Eddie immediately looks down at his wrist, not really caring about how bad his car is. He can’t remember why his wrist is so important but it must’ve been a long time ago. Much like the cut section of his cast that he refused to part with. Eddie is finally brought back to his senses by someone tapping his shoulder, “I need your details, for insurance purposes,” the man who was driving the taxi, says.
“Oh right, yes of course,” Eddie replies. He eventually looks at the damage he had caused only minutes ago, both inner sides of the cars are smashed. “Fuck!”
“Yeah, ‘fuck’ indeed.” Eddie quickly gave the law-abiding driver, his details and walked to the subway, not wanting to watch his SUV get towed away. The closer he gets to the subway, the more he thinks about Myra. She was going to take him to the emergency room for sure, ‘you may have a concussion, Eddie-bear’. Eddie shudders at the thought.
His eyes flick to his wrist as it heats up, it’s only in a small spot, centred on the side, in line with his pinky. Why doe it burn? Why does he remember it burning 24 years ago?
****
He walks up the stairs from the station and makes a beeline for the apartment complex that was just up the road. It’s like a sprint, almost like he’s desperate to get in and out and back into the ‘safety’ of Derry, his home, the place he loved?
Eddie stops, he looks up at the stairs, leading to his apartment, he can’t bring himself to walk up the stair. He feels as though someone was keeping him grounded, unable to move from his spot on the sidewalk. Derry? Home. Derry? Richie. Richie? Why does that name sound so familiar?
Small memories started to file in and Eddie knows he has to go back, he has to go back for Richie. Richie? There it is again!
“Eddie-bear! There you are!” Myra exclaims joyfully as she embraces her husband. “I thought you left me!”
“Now why would I do that?” Eddie replies, he tries to die down his obvious fake tone and must’ve been successful as Myra skips away to the kitchen. “Um, Myra, I have a work conference that I must go to tomorrow. It’s two hours out and is only going on for a few days.”
“Okay! I’ll come!”
“No!” It comes out harsher than he intended, and both wince. “No, it’s only workers, it’s just me and two other men going.” Myra sighs and nods. “I’ll need to leave in like two hours.” He hates it when she does this, it was almost like she hated the idea of him leaving. How he didn’t pick up on it soon, he didn’t know. It’s a smothering type of relationship and he can’t take it but he doesn’t want to hurt her.
“Oh, but I made your favourite.” The pungent smell of burnt spaghetti bolognese gets stronger and Myra removes the lid off the pot. Spaghetti? I never liked spaghetti but why do I like spaghetti?
He continues to think about his life choices since leaving Derry as he walks to the bedroom he shares with his wife. “Eddie Spaghetti.” Eddie mutters, “that’s why I always watch Trashmouth! He was my - “ Friend? No. Best friend? No.
Two thoughts left and Eddie can’t bring himself to even think like that, so he shakes the thoughts. It’s impossible, he has a wife who he loves? Why am I fucking questioning this?
He doesn’t bother to fold his clothes, just shoving everything he can into his suitcases. He grabs his toiletry bag and his old fanny pack that he hasn’t touched in 2 decades, still packed to the brim of old medication that he refuses to take. Just as he is about to walk out the door, he looks down at his hand.
The wedding ring.
He always thought it looked funny. It never sat right, it was slightly big but wasn’t big enough to fall off his finger. It was gold, he wanted a black silvery band but Myra wanted matching bands. Eddie always wanted to have sex but Myra always claimed it was dirty and a “sin”, even though they are married. How would we even reproduce? Eddie often wondered, he always thought about having kids.
“I’m sorry,” Eddie mutters and leaves his ring on the side table as well as a quickly scribbled note and finally drags his two suitcases down the hall and out the front to hail a taxi.
***
The flight over, Eddie has time to rethink everything. He pulls open his laptop and quickly sends a few emails regarding divorce and needing to update some forms. It may be too soon but Eddie knows that it isn’t. As he tries to think back to that Summer 27 years ago, he remembers yelling at his mother. Everything that Myra had done, it wasn’t healthy and Eddie laughs quietly to himself. I married my fucking mother!
The drugs and the little cuts and bruises and believing he needs to go to the hospital for stitches and medications to stop the bruises from forming. Leaving his mother in Derry made him forget everything he had done to prevent from being a hypochondriac and now he still is. He isn’t sick, he gets that, he never had asthma or weird illnesses that he had never heard of.
He opens Netflix and plugs in his headphones, he searches for Richie Tozier’s Netflix Special. Even though there’s only an hour left in the 2-hour flight, he still plays it. It’s obvious from the start that the jokes aren’t his, they were homophobic and nowhere near as dirty as they used to be. The humour was restrained and dry, only heckles and coughs were heard, no applause or laughs. It breaks Eddie’s heart, he isn’t sure why.
Sure he remembers the Losers and they had a friendship, a strong bond held by IT and bullying by Bowers’ gang, but Stan and Bill were two out of his three closest friends. Richie seems different and Eddie can’t put his finger on it. He tries to dig in his mind, staring at Richie’s tall figure on stage.
Richie was a comedian back in the day, think Eddie, what makes this so different to when we were kids?
“Would you like one from me too, Mrs K?” Richie had asked just before he, Eddie and Bill had gone somewhere, the Barrens? Sewer?
Crap!
Richie always made Eddie the butt of the joke or made dick jokes.
The burning on his wrist reappears, this time the skin where it burns starts to turn red. Eddie immediately covers it, trying to conceal the area from the open. It didn’t hurt this much the last time, Eddie recalls, it must have something to do with Derry.
****
As he drives past the ‘Welcome to Derry’ sign, the hairs on his neck stand up straight, goosebumps start to rise on his arms. The strange and uncomfortable feeling of being watched looms over him, he passes the cemetery, almost veering off the road as he catches a glimpse of a fluffy red hair and a white clown suit. “It’s just your mind playing tricks on you, Eds.” Eddie tries to reason with himself. “I hate being called that.” It rolls off his tongue, just like ‘Eds’.
Who called me that? I liked it though but said I hated it.
Hatred and frustration washes over him, he doesn’t want to be back in the homophobic town. He couldn’t, even as an adult, he didn’t want to fathom what the town would do if they found out he was gay.
Gay?
Crap!
No wonder why his marriage felt loveless, he wasn’t attracted to her! Or women in general. He was and still is attracted to men, well one man ... Richard Tozier.
*
He finally makes it to the Chinese restaurant but stays in his car for a few minutes to compose himself, not wanting to have a full-on panic attack during dinner. Aside from the killer clown returning to Derry, it was meant to be a happy reunion, a way to catch up with the other 6 survivors of Pennywise.
Eddie huffs and pulls himself out of his car and carries himself towards the restaurant. “Reservation for Michael Hanlon,” Eddie says to the waitress, who then leads him to a reserved table where two familiar faces stand. “Mike? Bill?”
“Eddie!?” Mike exclaims, racing over and hugging Eddie, Bill kind of stands awkwardly.
“Bill!” Eddie exclaims and hugs the horror writer.
*
Not even 10 minutes later, 3 others walk in and a gong goes off. Eddie catches the eye of the tall comedian, he watches the dark curls falling over the glasses, the way his jack clung to his broad shoulders. The burning sensation, that Eddie has been experiencing for the past day, starts to burn deeper and Eddie sees his skin form black bold letters. As he looked down, black inked appeared, ‘R.T’ was written.
Did I ever tell Richie? Or did I cover it up like I did with my sexuality?
“Did your soulmate’s initials fade when you left too?” Beverly asks as they all sat down to eat.
“Mine just came back,” Eddie replies. “It started burning when I got the call from Mike.”
“Mine never left, still says S.U,” Mike replies. Mike knows that Stan was happily married to Patricia and would never want to get in between them, sure he may never find anyone else but he likes being alone, in that sense at least. He loves having friends but doesn’t mind being alone relationship wise.
“Did you ever tell Stan!?” Bill asks and Mike shook his head. “Well, I got my soulmate.” That meant that Bill and Audra ... ? Eddie feels himself deflating.
“Mine faded too,” Ben says.
“Same,” Richie finally says just as he winces in pain and looks down at his wrist. “Shit.”
“Show us, boys!” Bev pipes up reaching over at both Eddie and Richie. Richie shrugged and reached over to Bev, Eddie followed. “OH MY GOD! Guys!” Ben, Mike and Bill gathers around Bev and looked between Eddie and Richie’s wrists.
“OH DAMN!” Ben squeals and clamps a hand over his mouth in embarrassment. Richie grabs Eddie’s wrist, his eyes widen.
“Eds ...” Richie whispers. Eddie shakes his head as a warning and flips Richie’s wrist round he looks down at his wrist and sees the ‘E.K’.
This shouldn’t be possible, his mother always told him that you couldn’t get an initial for someone of the same gender. Then again, she and the majority of the town were homophobic. Those thoughts are out of date now, being part of the LGBTQ+ community is accepted now, Eddie should have no fear. His mother is dead and he is planning at finally divorcing his wife.
Eddie looks into Richie’s eyes and remembers all the good times the two had shared. It was a type of love that Eddie never got from his mother or Myra, it wasn’t forced and he was able to be who he wanted to be. He could be a normal teenager who shouldn’t need to be scared of any health risks.
All the times Richie climbed in through his window, all the times he had snuck in through Richie’s window. The hammock? The hammock, he used to argue with Richie just so he could squeeze into the hammock with him.
“I’m still married, Richie. Until the divorce papers go through,” Eddie whispers. Richie didn’t seem to care and still kissed Eddie; both had waited 27 years for this to happen and didn’t want to wait any longer.
“Eds, I fucked your mom,” Richie whispers against Eddie’s soft and now swollen pink lips.
“BEEP, FUCKING BEEP, RICHARD!” Eddie groans. “Of course you had to ruin it!”
“I’m not even sorry, Eddie Spaghetti.”
That’s why he ‘likes’ spaghetti! One of the many nicknames that Richie gave him. ‘Eds’ he secretly loved but if he said anything, the others would call him that. ‘Eddie Spaghetti’ he absolutely hated! It was cringy and annoying, it was a means of Richie calling him cute and pinching his cheeks.
“Don’t call me that.” Eddie says. “You know i hate it when you call me that.”
“How about ‘babe’, Eduardo?” Eddie blushes, he couldn’t help it. There’s a fire inside of him that he hasn’t felt in almost 30 years and he loves it.
Eddie puts his arm up on the table, signalling for an arm wrestle. “Just like the old days.” Eddie whispers.
“Amen to that.” Richie chuckles. Their competitiveness never left, both needing to assert dominance. It had been like that for years and now was no different.

Fallout 4 AU: October 24th
If you guys remember, a while ago I quickly sketched up an idea of a modern/what if the bombs didn't drop Fallout AU for FOCCA (I'll get round to finishing the rest of the submissions eventually.)
Well, I've been doing some thinking and just wanted to share my notes on how the story would go. (This is my own personal interpretation.)
For now, the name is October 24th. Although the main story takes place after that, the name is supposed to symbolise that we're after the day of reckoning and everything is fine… mostly.
Be warned: This is a long one.
Story:
Okay so the story starts on the Morning of October 23 2077. Everything is the same as in game. River and Jack do their thing, joking around and making sure they look good. Shaun in this story is older, being around eight years old. (This is because I wanted to keep the 10 year old Shaun element and he can't be an old man in this version.) The television continues playing the usual news and… The bombs never fall. Not a single detonation. The McConnell family continue on with their day and attend the event at the Veteran's Hall.
When they go home, that night as they're sleeping, Kellogg breaks in and attempts to kidnap Shaun. In the struggle, Jack is shot dead and River is attacked, being knocked into a coma. This coma lasts a year with nearly another year of physical and mental therapy to go through before she returns home. Upon realising they never found Shaun or Jack's killer, she sets up on her own, trying to find her son and avenge her husband. The story beats are obviously very similar but adapted to be more modern. Synths are now clones because I felt like synths would be too Sci fi for this story.
Factions:
The Minutemen - A kind of neighbourhood watch organisation. Funded by the army, they were supposed to try and keep the peace, without using violence. Thus made sure the military had all of their soldiers back so they could fight. However, after some fighting within the organisation and the military suddenly cutting off funding, things quickly went downhill from there.
The BOS - This is simply the army. After the shut down of the Minutemen, a new group was made, the Brotherhood of Steel. These were soldiers sent by the military to patrol Boston, much like how they did before the Minutemen. However, since the threat of war is now gone, they have the soldiers to spare and want to show off their muscle to intimidate the people.
The Institute - I'm still not entirely sure about the synths being clones instead things so this one is really up for debate. My thoughts so far are that the Institute still kidnaps people. They harvest their organs and make a clone to send off to replace the original person. I know, not the best idea. But I was thinking about what they would do with the kidnapped people that seemed justified in their minds? Well, they still have the same belief that humanity is doomed with the way it's going. Rioting, corrupt governments and the rest. They replace people with clones of themselves, engineered to behave. And they kill and harvest the organs of the original person and send them to hospitals for people who can't get organ donations because they're too low on the list. In their minds, they're getting rid of corrupt people, replacing them with people who they see as being better for society and giving people who may not have one a chance at life. They're technically doing good, but they are killing people. They still work out of the CIT but in secret laboratories.
The Railroad - Very similar to their in game selves. A secretive organisation dedicated to setting clones free and stopping the Institute.
Characters:
Dogmeat - A stray dog that kept turning up on River's doorsteps during the first couple of weeks she stays at home. She eventually takes him in, being reminded of her other dog that ran away. She calls him Biscuit.
Codsworth - Mostly the same. A faithful robot butler mourning the loss of two of his masters and constantly worrying over River. He makes sure she takes all of her medicine and never let's her miss an appointment.
Preston - An ex Minuteman who spends most of his free time handing out fliers that promote it and tries to get people to sign a petition to bring the Minutemen back. His efforts are mostly in vain until he meets River after being attacked in an alleyway.
Piper - The same noisy reporter working for the Boston Bugle. Known for her sometimes controversial articles and her willingness to do anything for a story. She's very interested in River since the kidnapping of her son seemed to be the beginning of all of what she believes to be the Institute's kidnappings. At first River wants to stay away from her as Piper is particularly intruding in her life but accepts her help.
Nick - After the original Nick Valentine went for his brain scan, he was disposed of. The new Nick was made with Nick's DNA but due to the fact that the cloning technology had only just started being put to use, it wasn't perfect. He wasn't a complete copy of the original Nick and he was more than aware that he wasn't actually the original. At first he was loved up, the scientists not knowing what to do with him, but eventually Nick was broken out with the help of DIMA. He tried explaining that to 'his' boss and coworkers but they said he was mad. Eventually, Nick quit the police, feeling like he hadn't deserved to be there in the first place. After all, a man was murdered so he could live. He roamed the streets, no clue of what to do. He eventually found his way at the original Nick's home, still covered in evidence against Eddie Winters. Eventually, people started knocking on his door. They knew Nick Valentine was a great cop and did his job damn well. So when the police started ignoring missing person cases they came to him. Nick would've refused but without a job, he had no money to live. He begrudgingly accepted a job from someone in high power. (The same missing person case he dealt with in the original game but without the hilarious beeping part.) When he succeeded, he was overcome with a passion to help people. He stopped feeling sorry for himself and officially turned his place into Valentine Detective Agency. With the knowledge of his big case, people came to him from all over for help and he continued to give it to them. He had his lower right arm, some of his face, some parts generally all over damaged when one of Eddie Winter's men planted a bomb in his mailbox. He only placed his hand in so it wasn't as bad as it could've been. He did need everything below his left elbow removed and he now has a prophetic arm and eye. River Meets Nick when she rescues him from Mafia boss, Skinny Malone.
Hancock - John and his brother came from a poor family. Honest but poor. Living in a bad part of town, their parents tried to instill good values into them despite their circumstances. Unfortunately, neither really took it to heart. They were still a happy family, doing the best they could, even taking trips to museums as a treat. As they grew up, John found himself in a lot of trouble. Joining gangs, drinking, doing chems. However, his brother was going places. He worked hard, eventually becoming assistant to the mayor. However, once it was found out the mayor was using taxpayer's money to build his own luxurious vault, he was kicked out of office. With a position to fill, Hancock's brother worked hard. His campaign was brutal. His major promise was to move the poor people to the opposite side of Boston so they couldn't bother the more wealthy. This also meant they would be receiving less help from tax payers and left to fend for themselves. The people, after having plenty of money taken off them for years, loved this plan. He won at a landslide. John was furious. He thought with their situation, his brother wouldn't dream to hurt those who could barely afford to live. But his brother still carried it out. He left the promise of a cushy life with his brother and decided to live with the less fortunate. It wasn't the best situation but anywhere would've been better than with his brother. The particular section of Boston was horrible. Mostly lawless, police not even wanting to go near the place. It was a dog eat dog kind of town. Eventually, a mob boss named Vic overtook the town, making himself the leader. Forcing people to pay for protection or they would be beat. John watched every day. Despite wanting nothing to do with him, the mayor still gave John protection. He hated it. Being treated better than everyone else who was suffering. He got insanely wasted one night, feeling horrible for the protection he got and the way he ignored Vic's actions. He needed things to change. He couldn't stand the man he saw in the mirror. He poured his remaining bear over himself and set himself on fire. Most of the damage was on the left side of his body, mostly burning his face so that he was hardly recognisable. After putting the flames out, he broke into one of the museums he loved so much as a kid. He remembered learning about the men that built America. It was when he looked up at the coat of John Hancock that he decided enough was enough. After a very long trip to the ER with a very expensive medical bill his brother paid off, he went back to the town with a crew who hated Vic and challenged him directly. He managed to kill Vic, albeit not as barbaric as he does in the game, and took over the town. Vic's old crew feared John's strength and left the people alone. Hancock stepped up to be the leader, officially naming the town Goodneighbor. He even changed his name to John Hancock, fully separating himself from his brother and becoming his own person. He runs it mostly the same as he does in the game. River meets him after going into Goodneighbor with Nick following a lead on her case.
MacCready - Grew up in an orphanage in DC. He was roped into criminal activity at a young age. When he met his wife, Lucy, he claimed he was military being deployed in many places when he was off committing crimes. When his son was a few years old, Lucy was killed by a pack of rabid wolves when he didn't check out a camping spot. Duncan eventually became sick so MacCready moved to Boston with him after hearing that Med Tek was working on a cure. Unfortunately, that meant that Duncan had to live in the Facility and the cost to keep him safe and quarantined was high. MacCready works odd jobs, even stooping to criminal activity to help his son. He meets River after she hires him to help with doing some shady things since he knows his way around a lock and he's good protection.
Curie - Curie's 'father' Kenneth Collins works as a scientist in the CIT. While he isn't aware of the Institute, he had a friend in it who he confided in about how he was sad he could never have a child since he was alone and old. This friend wanted to surprise him one day and using his connections, managed to get the Institute to create a clone for him. They created an amalgamation of personalities, most intelligent and scientific and put it in a young woman. This became Curie. Collins quickly figured out that his friend must've been part of the Institute. After all, the rumours were largely spread around the CIT building. He kept Curie a secret, knowing how suspicious it would be for a random woman with no records of anything suddenly popping up. She stayed in mostly total isolation, learning everything she could about everything to do with science. While she did very rarely step outside her home only under the supervision of her father, she still didn't understand a lot and yearned to be outside to explore and study. Eventually, the Institute found out that their 'property' had been given away. Kenneth was killed and Curie remained trapped, locked in her room. River meets her after walking past her house, hearing her bang on her window. She eventually gets her out of the house and with nowhere else to go and no clue of what the outside world is like, River offers her guidance.
Danse - A Brotherhood member who is very patriotic and eager to defend the people and his country. However, despite his love for his country, he hates how the country is run. Despite the threat of nuclear war disappearing, Danse believes that America has become too relaxed and lazy, expecting everyone else to do the work. He believes the military are the only people pulling their weight and the American people need to wake up. He was replaced with a clone shortly after being deployed in Boston. River meets him when she comes across a small riot going on in the street between Danse's small squad and some members of the Minutemen. She steps in and resolves the situation. Danse is, of course, mistrustful since they were her people and he doesn't know if the Minutemen are a threat yet. However, River offers her help, guilty that Minutemen were involved in riots and Danse finds her to be quite useful for his mission.
Deacon - He was always a con man, weaseling his way into situations for his own benefit. However, he was also very troubled by the growing tensions between America and China. He joined a group that were against the Chinese and harassed any they met, even lynching a young man. Deacon left the group after this, being disgusted by his involvement and soon met the love of his life, Barbara. A Chinese-American woman. Despite some lingering feelings of fear and hatred, he eventually came to love her, growing out of his previous beliefs. They were happy together, even wanting to have a child together, however, before they had the chance, his old group found out about the pair and reported Barbara to be a Chinese spy, taking her away forever to what Deacon assumed to be her death for sure. Using his skills as a master of disguise and a con man, he managed to ruin every single one of their lives. The least someone got was being put in prison for life. He felt empty after he had his revenge. He didn't know what to do with himself. That's when he heard about the Railroad. A group dedicated to helping people. Deacon found his new cause. He may not be able to protect everyone but he could at least try to protect some. River meets him when she finds the Railroad, looking for their help. However, Deacon has had his eye on her for much longer than that.
Cait - Her parents abused her much like in the game. After she turned 18, her parents made her work on the streets to get money for their drinking, drugs and debts. Cait was isolated most of her life with the abuse and didn't know what she could've done to escape. Eventually her parents revealed their debt was too great to be paid off by Cait being on the street. So, as part of a deal she wasn't aware of, she was forced into an underground cage fighting ring. The owner of the ring itself was Tommy who was sympathetic towards Cait but the real people in control were the gang that took over, the people Cait's parents owed money too. She was forced to stay there under a contract, her only option to fight. River Meets her accidently when she wanders into a bad part of town and uses her legal knowledge to get Cait out of her contract.
Strong - Armstrong was the youngest out of six brothers. With his parents dying too young for him to remember, he was raised by his brothers, being abused and neglected by them. He was looked in his room most days and given the scraps of food. His brothers would fight them, knowing he was a weak target. Armstrong became stronger this way. Eventually, he escaped from his home. However, due to his lack of socialisation and education, he couldn't find work. Fortunately, he eventually found a free education program for adults. There, he was taught by radio personality Rex Goodman about literature. Macbeth stuck with him especially. Rex offered him work in his studio, hauling equipment but Armstrong still doesn't have the best socialisation and Rex doesn't get to spend as much time with him to teach him. River Meets Armstrong after she is invited on Rex's radio show to talk about her son. River feels bad for Armstrong and after some explanation about his life from Rex, River offers to help Armstrong and educate him in her free time.
X6-88 - A clone working as security for the Institute scientists. During the times the Institute scientists are not working, he works as a security guard at the CIT. He also brings in any clones who figure out they're clones. River first meets him when she enters the CIT looking for answers after she gets clues that the CIT is where the Institute is.
DiMA - Dima was the Institute's first attempt at creating life without the use of cloning. He was put with Nick who was the first attempt at creating life with the use of cloning and the two formed a bond with their imprisonment. They even considered themselves brothers. However, with Dima's lack of an imported personality, he tended to be quite unemotional, something the Institute would take advantage of when making their security. However, Dima could tell how much Nick was suffering and wanted to freeze him. He himself wanted to be free too, of course, but he wanted his brother to be happy more than anything. He eventually helped him escape but something happened. Nick was injured in the escape, causing him to lose most of his memory of the Institute and Dima. Dima was scared, especially since his brother didn't recognise him anymore so he fled. He hoped to see him again some day but he would wait for Nick to find him.
Obviously there's more characters and stuff but this is what I've thought of so far.
Feel free to ask questions or request something about this!

Introduction
We met in spring of 2017. He changed my life forever, in a way that I will never be able to explain. What I would want you to understand before reading this, is how much love has taken charge of my feelings and impulses.
I loved him, I love him.
Nothing he did will ever change that.
At this point I bet you may be wondering who I am. Right... I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Nadir, a 25 year old man that is attracted to other men, but that’s not the most significant part in the story. I grew up in a quiet conservative town in Michigan, with a small population of less than 5,000 people. My mother is pretty old schooled and forced me to stay in school until I graduated. That meant no ‘girlfriends’, no sleepovers, no working. I always had the desire to help her monetarily by getting a job and at least pay the house bills. However she would constantly say to me to just focus on my studies and that would be what would help us in the long run.
My parents are originally from Israel. My mother grew up as Catholic, which was not the usual back then and my father grew up Jewish. They became less religious when they decided to move to the United States, which is where they had my siblings and I. They both lived here as immigrants and I didn’t understand what that meant when I was a child, I just thought we were like any other family living in the US. My father unfortunately passed away from a heart attack when I was 8 years old and it affected me in ways you couldn’t possibly imagine. During his wake, I didn’t cry. It was all so surreal and I felt like he would wake up randomly and claim that everything was a joke. He had a great sense of humor and always managed to make people smile, however his death wasn’t a joke. Once it was time to bury him, I cried as hard as I could since I knew I wouldn’t see him ever again. After that, my mother worked as hard as she could to give my siblings and I what we needed. She could barely afford to pay for the mortgage on the house until my older brothers started working and helping her out with as much as they could. My mother worked two jobs daily to make sure we had food on our table, clothes and a good education.
It would hurt me to see her stress about providing for us, so eventually I managed to get a scholarship at San Francisco State University. Being the youngest of 4 children gave me a bit of an advantage to enjoy ‘the beauty of freedom’ as we know it now, and not have to struggle about being gay in the 70′s, not that it’s any different now. I mean there are hate crimes all over, shootings that keep getting more common by the minute and discrimination which is still pretty big now. That is one of the reasons why I decided not to come out to my mother, nor anyone in town for that matter. I was already struggling with self-acceptance and I didn’t want to be a burden to my mother. During my senior year of High School I managed to convince my mother to let me work to save up for essential stuff. I began working at a pharmacy and little by little saved up enough money to leave town and follow my dreams in a career I wanted. I wasn’t certain of what my major would be, however it needed to be in the art field. Whether it would be acting, directing, drawing or video editing. I decided to go with the flow and see what would appeal my interest. I wanted to be able to afford a place in ‘The City’, so working at that little pharmacy helped me save up & I also had a job secured so I would be able to help my mother with her expenses from afar.
It took me a few months but right before spring classes started, I booked the first plane to San Francisco without looking back. My siblings showed up with my mother to the airport. Elijah, the oldest, was a bit of a role model growing up. He got married at 22, had 2 children and joined the police force. Amir, the second to oldest, was always a jokester which he definitely got from my father, and had a bit of a ‘bad boy’ complex, which is quite the opposite of Elijah. He never got married, which my mother never agreed with, however he did have 3 kids, all with different women. Last but not least, my sister Hadassah, she was only 3 years older than me and I guess you could say we were the closest. Both of us would take care of my mom as much as possible and help her around the house as much as it was possible. She decided to stay in a community college to be closer to my mother and to help her financially as much as she possibly could. I hugged everyone goodbye, but when I got to my mother I couldn’t hold it in much longer. Tears started pouring down my face as I hugged her, but managed to remind her that this wasn’t a goodbye, but a ‘see you later’. I wish I could’ve come out to her, but I was afraid it would devastate her and we might lose the relationship we had built. As cliche as it sounds, she is my best friend, the person I trust the most in this world. I was considering staying as I hugged her. She pulled away and put our foreheads together.
“You’ll be fine... You’ve got this! And remember einayim sheli, you’re stronger than you think! I’ll be supporting you from afar! Nothing you could do would ever disappoint me”.
“I love you mom. Don’t worry, I’ll send money your way and I’ll be back during the holidays!”
“You better, my dear! Now go, don’t want you to miss your flight”, she said as she hugged me once again.
Her words gave me enough courage to pick up my stuff and board the plane. I turned back once more before heading to the ramp and saw my siblings & her waving at me. Hadassah was hugging my mother and even though she was trying to stay as strong as possible, I saw tears rolling down her face. She noticed that I saw them and immediately wiped them off with a smile. I always admired how strong of a woman she is. She truly is a role model and someone I look up to as to how to live my life. However, I’ve never been as strong so I couldn’t hold back and started crying as I boarded the plane.
The flight felt eternal and having anxiety didn’t help at all. I quit medication a few months before leaving since I didn’t think I would need it… Boy, was I wrong. I managed to calm myself down by working on some sketches I’ve been doing on my drawing paper pad. Next thing I knew, I was arriving in San Francisco, California; Population: 883,305, well... I guess now it’s 883,306 residents. I wasn’t necessarily going into San Francisco completely helpless, I was moving in with my best friend. I met Marcia in elementary school. Her father Sebastiao works for the government, and that’s as much as I know about him. That and the fact that he had to move to San Francisco due to a “really good job opportunity”. Her father is originally from Brazil & his wife, Mayra is Mexican-American. Marcia grew up and learned all three languages, English, Spanish & Portuguese so she was able to fit in easier in “The Bay Area” when they left our little town. We would spend hours on the phone after she moved and she would tell me about San Francisco and how she thought I’d love it. She was honestly afraid to be one of those kids whose parents have to move regularly because of their jobs, but lucky for her, she didn’t have to do that. She set up a high bar for me arriving in San Fran and when I did... Well, let’s just say she didn’t disappoint. Her dad bought her an apartment and she was willing to share it with me at no cost, but I already had plans of helping her out with utilities & give her some extra cash to thank her for sharing her apartment with me. She shared her apartment with two puppies, Chuy & Elena, two small pomeranians whom she considered her children since she wasn’t planning on having any kids. When I told her I had gotten a scholarship to SF State, she immediately suggested I should move in with her. I wasn’t too sure of that idea, but it honestly was the best option I had so far.
I finally get my luggage and sit in the lobby to wait for her. I look around and see a lot of people meeting up with their loved one, whether it is their lover, or family. “You just left your family back there. You won’t even make it here nor achieve anything you had your mind set to. This is truly a bad idea. Why are you even doing here? You’re an idiot for leaving! All for some stupid experiment you want to try? Bullshit!”. I close my eyes and take another deep breath. I then feel my phone vibrate with the following text message:
“I see you!”
I looked up and saw her smile. She hadn’t grown much, stood about 5′6, black, curly shoulder-length hair, light skinned, with dorky glasses. People always claimed she was a weirdo, but who am I to judge? I was a bit taller than her, stood about 6′1, a bit of scruff on my face, brown semi clean-cut hair. I was always the weird kid at school, so we managed to click from the very beginning. She was the first person to talk to me in elementary school, and that meant the world to me. I was always a bit of an introvert, however she helped me come out of my shell little by little and when she left, I fell back into it.
“Marcia! Babe! I’m so happy to see you!”
I ran to her and hugged her. It felt like yesterday that I had said goodbye to her at the airport.
“Honeeeeey! Ugh, I’m soooo glad to see you! You smell soooo good! Don’t tell me you’re still into buying or should I say, collecting colognes?”
“Guilty!”
“Well then, you just might like what I have for you at home! Let me help you with your bags! I can’t wait for you to FINALLY meet Chuy & Elena! They’re going to LOVE you! My tia is still pretty mad that I named Elena after her, but she should take it as a compliment! It just means I love her! I mean, dogs are your most loyal companions... Not that she was ever loyal to my uncle, but still! I’m telling you, my little Elena is NOTHING like her!”
I looked at her in disbelief. She still had that smile and a gleam in her eye. She had always had that hopeful gleam in her eye... Something I had lost a long time ago.
I hated it.
“I’ll kill if I have to, but I’ll regain that hope again, just wait”

Mischief and Ice (Chapter 2)
Synopsis: Thanos’ cruel attempt to wipe out half of the universe failed and the titan is dead; but his actions came with grave consequences. Tears and cracks in the universe, all across space and time formed wormholes within the nine realms and beyond, giving old enemies a vicious opportunity to strike again. When the Jötuns invade Earth and the Avengers assemble to defend the planet once again, it is the help of none other than the former war criminal Loki they are reliant upon to drive the icy warriors back to their own realm. But then the God of Mischief encounters a young woman abandoned in the cold—your body mangled and altered with Jötun blood, a lab rat to the Frost Giants. He decides to take you with him and nurse you back to health, unable to comprehend the confusing affection he begins to harbour for you.

Stepping through a make-shift portal was hardly a problem, travelling by Tesseract or Bifrost had proven to be a lot more draining. The challenge was to put up with all the hostile glares the Avengers shot him like daggers when they caught sight of him, following suit after Thor.
He had to admit, Strange was skilled—he conceded him talent, yet he was hardly impressed. After all, he had been doing this for centuries. Last time, the mortal wizard had merely caught him off guard. Loki would not let that happen again.
“So… Frost Giants,” Thor began with a forced smile, sitting down on the chair reserved for him during meetings almost as if he had never left the compound. Loki simply stood, clasping his hands behind his back. There was no reason to get comfortable around these people. Especially Tony looked like he was going to shoot him any moment and Doctor Strange, joining the group at the table after the portal snapped shut behind him, steered clear of the God of Mischief anyway, fuelling the other’s suspicion even further.
“It’s good to see you, Point Break. But why the hell did you bring Reindeer Games?” Tony interrupted him harshly.
Loki only smirked as he lifted his arms in false defeat. Infuriating them had amused him then and it still amused him now. Nothing was ever going to change about this. He was not fond of his own past, and the reputation his own family had besieged him with. There was nothing to be proud of, not really. But, he had begun to come to terms with it. So what was wrong about having a little fun? A malicious smile worked wonders to hide a wounded and tainted heart.
“Look, Loki is…” Thor hesitated. Why did he hesitate? The world knew by now he was not really Asgardian. The God of Mischief sighed. “He knows the Jötuns a lot better than I do.”
Tony opened his mouth to protest, followed by Natasha raising an eyebrow at him.
“Right… next thing we know he sets them against us.”
This time, Loki actually chuckled quietly, almost surprised by himself. He had fought so much in the last couple of years, survived quarrels with his brother, won against the Goddess of Death and lastly, helped to kill the titan who had scarred him for life… and there was absolutely no reason for him to still bother with all the people who had slashed his vulnerable heart not so long ago; not then and not now. Still… that did not mean he could not vex them when it felt like cooling medicine down his throat.
“You are not quite wrong, Agent Romanoff.” His blue glance wandered over to Thor who watched his every movement with widened eyes.
“What are you saying?” He roared.
“I am the rightful king of Jötunheim.”
The entire room fell silent. One could practically hear them all trying to digest what he had just said. Eventually, Thor spoke up again, leaning against the table in the process.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” He stated dryly.
“A long time ago, we have tried your method. Do you recall how your blind lust for battle ended?” He paused, his wicked grin widening. “Brother… do you not trust me?”
Bruce scoffed. “That’s a trick question, right?”
Oh, it was. Never trust the God of Mischief. Loki was curious as to what it would feel like to be trusted for once, yet he felt no desire whatsoever to make up with the self-proclaimed superheroes.
“Perhaps it is about time I claim the throne.”
“Okay.” Tony spat. “What’s your plan? If it involves killing or any kind of narcissistic self-glorification, I’m going to kick you all the way back to Norway myself.”
Sighing, Loki rolled his eyes. Stark was the one talking.
“Please… enlighten me. Have you got a plan? Your metal armour will be entirely useless against the Jötuns, Stark, they would freeze the parts within mere seconds. What is your strategy?”
Steve was the only one willing to reply. Morally, the soldier out of time was perhaps the only one thinking rationally when it came to him. He could not exactly say that he liked him but at the very least, Loki was able to tolerate him.
“We should be headed to Norway right now. If they attack, without us the people will stand no chance.”
“Then what?” Loki probed, clearly unimpressed. “What about the places they have already taken? You are suggesting what has been on Thor’s mind since he first laid hand on his hammer—to hurl yourself into battle and strike where they will be at their strongest. The Jötuns will send their fiercest warriors to Norway, rest assured Asgard will defend it but their leaders… their leaders will hide, cowardly, in the background.”
“How would you know?” Tony snapped. In response, the God of Mischief turned straight to Thor.
“Laufey ruled Jötunheim for decades. The Frost Giants would not take kindly in leaders and commanders changing their utmost principles. I watched them for a long time, learned how they operate, remember? They do not like surprises.”
Bruce raised his eyebrows, crossing his arms with a thoughtful expression. “So what do you suggest?”
“I suggest we take the war where we want it to be.”
They have abandoned their palace and they left me behind to die. Was it mercy… or was it a worse fate they had tossed you into? You had run out of edibles two days ago. Covered in frost bites, bruises and other injuries but most importantly half frozen, you were surprised you still managed to melt the ice between your hands to drink some water.
No. Death would be mercy and yet, you did not want to perish. If only you had listened to your brother.
Come home early, he had said. Mum’s making supper, he had said. You didn’t know whether they were still alive. Your mum suffered from an incurable illness. She was weak, bed-ridden for the most part but she loved cooking more than anything in this world. Whenever she felt energised enough, she would prepare gorgeous and delicious meals for you all.
You should have come so you would be together now. You should have screamed at your boss and insisted on leaving. It wasn’t like you were getting paid for all the extra hours he forced on you… but you still needed the money on your bank account every month, if anything to pay your mother’s medical bills—you couldn’t risk getting fired.
What had happened to the rest of the country, you did not know. Iceland was fairly small compared to other places, the chances there was help on the way were ridiculously little. Maybe they were all dead. Maybe you had gotten lucky.
You scoffed, your breath blowing white fog into the cold air around you. Your will to live was strong but you had long bent to the Frost Giant’s cruel rules, learnt not to try and run away or lash out and fight back. Compared to them, you were tiny, fragile.
The worst part, however, had not been when they had impaled you with their ice cold cocks and filled you with their chilly seed, not the many bruises they had inflicted on you and not how they had made you bathe in a tub full of cold water and ice as a punishment or simply for their amusement but the many times they had injected you with their blood, watching you wither away.
They had told you many things—but they had never told you why they would attempt to break your body. Instead… they had simply done it.
It was short of a miracle you were not dead yet but if no one found you soon, then you would be.
Tony cursed quietly, earning himself a half-hearted scolding from Steve as he flew over the ocean, leading the quinjet to its first destination—Iceland. Natasha had been forced to switch off the routing signals. There was no need to give away their position, after all. What they had on their side was the element of surprise. That, and Loki’s ridiculous but unfortunately also very plausible plan.
Who was he to trust the one man who had caused his PTSD?
Once they had gotten suited up and ready to leave, for none of them wanted to lose any more time, he had stopped Loki with a scowl, grabbing his upper arm. The God of Mischief’s growl had been deadly.
“Why are you doing this, really?” Tony had inquired quietly. “Helping us, I mean. Surely not from the kindness of your heart…?”
Loki had had the audacity to smile—maliciously.
He trusted Thor—and if Thor believed that taking Loki on a mission and putting their lives into his hands was a good idea… he sighed. Loki had hoodwinked, betrayed and fooled his own brother quite a few times. No… it was still a bad idea and he doubted that he would make it out alive without having to kill Loki slowly at some point.
“What exactly are we looking for, Reindeer Games?” He started languidly after they had landed. Natasha was loading her guns—silent clicks echoing through the ice cold air—Bucky was adjusting his metal arm, Steve was fixing his shield and even Thor’s lightnings crackled through his new weapon. They all expected a fight upon their arrival and they were not entirely wrong.
The Frost Giants had left traces. It was almost beautiful. The rivers, houses, bushes, trees and streets, everything was frozen and glittering and glistening in the weak sunlight. Loki knew they must have established themselves a little empire and now abandoned it to hunt their next big prize.
“Look around you,” he explained impatiently. “Does this look like a battlefield to you? It is not. Mortals are no match for Jötuns and they knew this. Anything that is made of ice and moves—kill it. What we are searching for are their headquarters. A place for them to hide while the lower among them do the dirty work.” It did not sound much different from how Odin had ruled. Loki suppressed a scoff. It was a trait the dead king had passed on to his only biological son. He, Loki, was the brains, Thor was only the muscles. Some things would never change…
“So what do we do?” Wanda’s voice cut through the air, her Eastern European accent heavier than usual. He had by now noticed it did so whenever she was upset or nervous. Nothing Loki should be worried about as long as she kept her powers in control.
“We split up.” Thor announced loudly before Loki had a chance to reply. But yes. Working in solitude was what the God of Mischief had learned to prefer when the only person he could ever truly rely on was himself. Besides, upon an encounter with another Jötun, he would not have to dread turning all blue and monstrous in front of the Avengers—they mistrusted him as is.
There were no castles in Iceland, not really. But the God of Mischief, knowing exactly what to pay attention to, soon found what he was looking for. It was an old ruin, a former farm house—and it was the perfect place for starting an icy kingdom. The first of many places to find Jötun guards, councillors or even one of their leaders.
“I found something,” he announced dryly, still getting used to the little headset device that enabled him to communicate with the Avengers. “Stay where you are, I am going in first.”
“Hold on a second, Reindeer Games. What’s your location?”
But he had already turned the annoying piece of electronics off. It would only distract him, especially if he was forced to listen to Stark’s dull voice. Rolling his eyes, he approached the frozen farm house and pushed open the door, not even flinching when his skin made contact with the ice cold doorknob. Then, he stepped inside.

JAMES GOES DARK AF.
Trigger warnings: Extreme violence, language and torture.
******************************************************************************
“Where are you?” I hear tears in his deep voice, he’s crying with me.
“I don’t know.” I whimper.
JAMES
My heart is exploding out of my chest and I’m crying so hard I can hardly take a breath. Part of me is ashamed at how strongly I’m reacting, but there’s only Thor, Steve and Stitch in the van with me, and they all know how precious Levi is to me, they’ve all seen the way her abduction has affected me. I’m not ashamed to show how deeply I love her, I just wish I could get my shit together long enough to figure out where she’s at.
A hand claps my shoulder. “Give me the phone,” Stitch commands. “I need to assess her injuries.”
I don’t want to let go but I do, passing the cell over and gripping the dashboard in front of me, fighting to draw deep breaths. It occurs to me suddenly that the van has come to a stop and I glance over, see Thor bent over the steering wheel, forehead resting on his forearms. His shoulders shake, he’s crying too.
I turn my head to look in the back. Stitch has moved to the furthest corner of the van, where it’s quieter and is the epitome of professional concentration; I’ve been around him long enough to know that only later will he allow the emotions in, only later will he break down, but he’s better at pushing it all away in the moment than the rest of us, he was a field medic, baptized by fire.
My eyes track to Steve next and he’s no better off than either Thor or I; his face is red, cheeks wet and he looks like he’s praying, although I know for a fact he hasn’t set foot in church since middle school.
Levi’s disappearance was crushing, her reappearance equally devastating, but for completely different reasons. I doubt I’m the only one who’ll only be able to breathe easier after they’ve crushed her in their arms, breathed in her scent and reassured their anxious heart that she truly is safe.
Levi hasn’t been in the family for long, but she’s in deep.
Stitch finishes his questions and covers the mouthpiece. “She’s banged up some, dehydrated and the fucker shot her in the shoulder, but she’s coherent and alert.” He hands the phone back to me before I make ‘gimme’ fingers.
“Baby?” I gasp, desperate to hear her voice again.
“James,” she breathes, tears in her voice.
“I’m so sorry, baby. I’m sorry I wasn’t there-”
She interrupts. “This wasn’t your fault.”
She doesn’t need my wretched guilt, not right now. “Can you figure out where you are?”
She pauses and I visualize her glancing around frantically. “I don’t know.”
“Any landmarks? Something distinctive about the terrain?” I press.
“Any mail? Business cards, anything laying around?” Steve adds.
“Babe, you heard that?”
“Yeah,” I hear quiet shuffling. “Give me a second. There’s nothing outside, just scrub-brush; but I think I’m in some kind of valley or wash... there’s an old blue ford pick-up outside, rusted out, hood up-”
“Good, baby. Good, keep going.” I encourage.
“Wait... there’s some old papers. It looks like this place has been empty for years, but there’s still old furniture and stuff laying around.” I hear more scuffling. “Wait, yeah... some old bills-”
She reads off the address, but as soon as I hear ‘Deke and Carol Henday’ I know exactly where’s she’s at.
“Shit, baby! We’re on our way. Sit tight, just a few hours. Hide somewhere, okay?” I pull the phone away from my ear to bark at Thor. “You were right, he took her home. Go!” The screech of tires temporarily drowns out any other noise and I hear Steve barking into his own phone to the other team travelling with us, but my focus is on Levi now.
“Levi? Baby, you still there?”
“Yeah,” she whispers and my bones melt. “Don’t hang up on me, okay?” Her voice quavers slightly.
“No, never, baby. Never.” Her tremulous exhale slays me. “Can you hide somewhere?”
“I think so... yeah.” I hear more scuffling and shuffling, then the click of a door.
“Baby...” the words slash my tongue but I need to ask. “Did he hurt you...?”
“No.” She whispers and I sag in relief. “He knocked me around some though, Stitch thinks my eye socket is cracked again.”
Rage boils in my blood, but now isn’t the time. “I was so scared.” I confess.
“Me too.”
“If something happened to you, I couldn’t-” I break off before I the darkness overwhelms me again; I cannot think that way, I’ll go fucking crazy.
“I’m here, I’m safe.” Her voice is soothing, a gentle balm to my raw nerves. When I get her back, I’m not letting her go, I’m going to trap her in my arms for days, burrow as close as I can against her until the anguish fades.
Thor’s pushing the speed limit as much as he dares, and I want to scream at him to go faster, but the last thing we need is to be pulled over, have to explain to some too-big-for-his-britches rent-a-cop what the fuck we’re doing and so I don’t comment, focusing on Levi instead. We don’t talk for long stretches, we don’t need to; I can hear her breathing, and her me, and for now, it’s enough. For a while I think she dozes, but whimpers awake with a short cry of ‘No!’ that stops my heart.
“Are you close yet?” She whispers and I glance at Thor, brow raised.
“Forty minutes.” He answers, glancing at his GPS.
“Almost there, angel. Less than an hour.”
“Okay.” Her voice breaks.
LEVI
My body aches and I’m so goddamn tired, but hearing James on the other end of the phone is keeping me going.
Soon, my mind chants, soon. They’ll be here soon.
I’ve hidden myself in a back-bedroom’s closet, pulled the folding door shut behind me and sit with my knees drawn to my chest; the phone clenched in one fist and the knife in the other. James’ earlier words drift back to me, ‘You were right, he took her home,’ and I can only summon relief that the bastard was predictable that way, that he ran to ground in familiar territory and my family thought to look there first. They were already racing here when I escaped and called, I couldn’t imagine having to wait hours upon hours for them to drive all the way across the state, my fucking nerves couldn’t take it.
This is even worse than waiting in the fading firelight last night, my ears strain to pick up any noise, any indication that my attacker, Henday, has followed me, tracked me here and is dragging his battered body towards me like some ghoulish Terminator.
I want James here, I want to feel his arms around me, his lips on mine; I want to be able to fall asleep knowing I’m safe, surrounded by his scent, his warmth and security.
Nothing can hurt me while James is with me.
I don’t even notice my eyelids have gotten heavy, almost closing until a screech outside and slamming of vehicle doors startles me alert. I freeze, heart hammering. Has Henday found some way back to me?
I hear muffled pounding feet, the front door of the house smacks the wall as it’s violently thrown open, then people are shouting my name, but one voice rises above the others, arrowing directly to my heart.
James.
I reach up weakly, push the cheap folding door open and try to yell back, but my throat can only manage a croak. Then James is there, eyes wild, face flushed, a gun in his hand.
“Levi!” He cries out, dropping the gun, falling heavily on his knees in front of me, dragging me against his chest. I squeak as pain shoots through my body, but my relief at seeing James again, at finally being safe overrules any and all discomfort. I claw closer, climb into his lap, straddling him and burrow as close as I can, tears streaking down my cheeks, wetting James’ t-shirt and he’s just as frantic back, squeezing the life out of me and I don’t know who’s crying harder, who’s shaking more violently.
We fall silent, muffling our tears against each other’s shoulders and just cling together. I can’t see, hear, smell or touch anything other than James and my heart gives a big sigh of relief. James is trembling against me, but he doesn’t let go, if anything, he’s trying to hold me closer, never wanting to let me go.
I know the feeling.
Eventually, sounds pierce our bubble and a hand rests on James’ shoulder. I lift my head to look but James keeps his face buried in my hair, his tears wetting my skin. His breathing is hard and tremulous.
Steve and Thor are smiling down at me, and Stitch stands nearby holding a small duffel and looking impatient.
Steve speaks first, swiping once at his cheek before reaching out and gently shaking James’ shoulder. Reluctantly, he lifts his head. “Brother.”
“She needs water.” James states, jerking his chin at the bottle in Steve’s hand.
I realize then how fucking thirsty I am and scramble for the bottle, sucking down the precious liquid with a desperation I’ve never felt before. Suddenly, my stomach heaves and rejects the bounty and I barely manage to lean away from James before it all comes up again, splashing in the dark corner.
James pries the bottle from my hands and holds it up to my lips. “Small sips, baby. Small sips.” He parcels the liquid out slowly and I swallow gratefully, eager for more. My stomach doesn’t rebel this time, and I feel an indescribable relief flood my limbs, chasing away the pain.
I finish the bottle but James refuses to give me more, not wanting to overload me and Stitch agrees. The medic kneels in front of us and reaches up to gently touch my uninjured shoulder. I flinch before I can stop myself and shoot him an apologetic glance. James growls low in his throat, a warning.
“Can you turn around?” Stitch asks and I hear the snap of rubber gloves. I squirm on James’ lap to comply and hear his small, muffled groan as I rub accidentally against him. He shoots me a sheepish look; James would no sooner take advantage of my body right now than he would sacrifice a puppy, but his body and cock have their own involuntary reactions to me and, when I’m feeling better, he plans to wreck me. The feeling is definitely mutual.
Stitch is all business, prodding gently at my cheekbone, wincing in commiseration and nodding in confirmation. “Yeah, cracked orbital socket. We need an X-ray this time. Too many traumas to the same area and we might need to consider titanium implants for stability-” he continues on, not noticing the way James’ tenses at his words. “Any tenderness in the ribs?” He glances up at me and I shake my head.
“Just my wrists, leg and shoulder.” I reply, holding out my hands and pulling away the makeshift bandages I applied.
All four men audibly growl as my torn skin becomes visible and the tension in the room ratchets up to suffocating.
“That fuck.” I hear Steve grit.
Stitch seems almost reluctant to prod the rent flesh, stunned by the exposed muscles, the dried blood staining my hands and halfway up my forearms. My wrists throb like I’ve dipped them in battery acid, but I’m become almost inured to the pain by now. Swallowing once, he reaches into his duffel and produces a few wrapped sterile moist bandages.
“I’m not even going to try to treat these until we get home, I need more than what I brought.” He says, carefully wrapping my abused wrists. His hands pause as he finishes, and he takes a deep, audible breath. The army medic who’s seen it all is having a tough time holding himself together. Finally, he raises his head. “Your shoulder?”
At my small nod he reaches up and begins to examine my left shoulder. He’s supremely gentle, but I flinch and wince nonetheless, turning and burying my face in James’ throat. I can feel the angry pulse of his heart through his velvet skin.
“Clean in and out.” Stitch reports. “But again, I’m not comfortable treating this here.” His inspection of the gash on my shin is quick but thorough, and it is quickly wrapped as well. My injuries are severe enough that he’s not willing to risk further complications by working on them without his entire inventory of supplies and clean surroundings. He looks up. “We need to go.”
Steve nods even as Thor’s cell begins to ring. He pulls it out and listens briefly, barking a command before hanging up. “Team’s here.” He levels pain-filled eyes at me. “Where is he, darlin’?”
The exhaustion I’ve been holding at bay for hours is threatening to take me, but I force myself to think, replay these last terrifying hours. “North, I think. There’s a trail. About a mile up is where the van broke down; keep going another couple miles to the campsite. I fought him, he was flat-out when I left.”
“You wound him? Did he have any weapons?”
I think back to the duffels full of guns. “Yeah, I hit him in the head with a propane tank and hamstrung him. I might have broken his nose and I slammed the van door on his head too. Oh, and I nailed him in the balls.” James chuckles darkly against my skin. “Weapons? Yes, but they’re all in the van. He had a handgun, though. I took his knife.”
“I hope you fucking ruptured his nuts.” Thor glances at Steve with a raised brow and he nods in return. Both men turn to leave but Steve glances back. “You coming, Cannon?” His tone indicates he doesn’t expect an affirmative answer.
James shakes his head, burrowing his face into my hair for a heartbeat before lifting it again and adding. “Do what you want with him, but I want him back at the compound alive and able to answer questions after.”
Head-on-a-stick floats ghoulishly through my brain and I can’t stop a shiver. James tightens his arms around me, surrounding me in his comforting scent. His lips linger at my throat and I can’t decide if the slight tremor I feel emanating from him is suppressed rage or sorrow.
“C’mon, baby.” He murmurs and Stitch reaches out to steady me as we stand. Once he’s upright again James pulls me back to him and reaches down, lifting me bridal style. I close my eyes to block out the house as he carries me outside.
The team is assembling beside one of the vans, and I hear the click of many cocked handguns, the snick of many blades being replaced in sheathes. I almost feel sorry for what awaits Henday, almost.
Steve appears at James’ side as Stitch throws open the back doors of the second waiting van. I’m drifting, and don’t hear what he says, and then I’m being gently set down on a mattress laid out in the rear of the vehicle, James taking care to lay me on my right side, my damaged left shoulder free. Stitch kneels in front of me, rummaging in his duffel. He withdraws a small vial and syringe.
“Morphine.” He explains as he draws up some of the clear liquid. “Just enough to take the edge off for the drive.”
I nod tiredly; I just want to sleep.
James settles behind me as Stitch gives me the injection and, as the medic pats my leg comfortingly and turns back to his duffel, he scoots closer carefully, his heavily muscled chest pressing against my back. His arm cautiously wraps around me, drawing me nearer, but he’s careful to avoid my wounds. To be honest, I’m so starved for him I’d put up with the pain either way.
Stitch drapes a blanket over us as James nuzzles his face into the nape of my neck and then the relief of the morphine pulls me under.
JAMES
Only my need to hold Levi close to me keeps me from riding with my brothers to find that worthless fuck and tearing him the fuck apart. Only my helpless desire to breathe her in, feel her soft curves against me and reassure myself that she’s here, whole and alive keeps my beast caged.
Bane and Stitch sit in the front and Bane drives us home while Stitch approaches us periodically to check up on Levi, take her pulse and read her temperature with one of those quick-read ear thermometers. Levi barely shifts, never waking and I let her sleep, content to just hold her.
The prospect and the medic talk quietly up front but I don’t listen, I only burrow closer to my woman and try to decompress. Try to wind down from the abject hell of the last few days.
I never want to feel that again, that helpless fear, the horror of the unknown. Terror that the woman who completely owns me, body, mind and soul was somewhere out there, being hurt and tortured and I couldn’t do a fucking thing to stop it.
Henday will beg me for death before I kill him. He’ll wish he’d never been born.
My cell buzzes and I move as little as possible to glance at the screen. It’s Steve.
Leaving now.
He still talking? I reply.
Mostly, might need a boost.
Pain is an effective stimulant.
Text me when you get back, I’ll be with Levi.
K. She did a number on him, fucking proud of her.
I set the phone back down and burrow closer to my girl. I’m fucking proud of her too. The way she described fighting back makes my chest puff with pride. She held her own against a real bastard and got away. I didn’t think it was possible, but my love for her has grown even more.
I manage to drift off too before we get back, and wake to the prospect thumping the sole of my boot. Levi flinches and whimpers when I move her, making me wince; I hate, with a passion, causing my baby pain. Stitch hurries ahead of me and has his small but well-stocked infirmary in the back of the clubhouse lit up and humming when I carry Levi through the door. It’s past midnight and the clubhouse is asleep, except for the sentries we have posted during the lockdown. I expect Nat and Sable to appear at any moment, demanding to see their friend.
I’m exhausted, but far too keyed up to sleep and I’m not leaving Levi’s side. After Stitch disappears for a minute in the back room and reappears freshly scrubbed and in clean clothes, he pushes me back there too to clean up, and when I come back in, he’s already working on Levi. He points to a chair at the head of the gurney and tells me to sit; talk to her and keep her occupied; she’s going to be in some pain unless he gives her enough morphine to knock her out.
Levi’s eyes shoot open as he begins and her jaw tightens. I open my mouth to snap at Stitch to give her more but she shakes her head slightly, gritting out a ‘no’. I hear my teeth squeak as I clench them.
“Just talk to me,” she murmurs hoarsely.
I don’t know what to say, I only know I want to keep her distracted from the pain. I start murmuring, lowering my head to hers, telling her about the rides I plan to take her on, when all this shit is done with, where we’ll just fill the bike’s saddlebags with supplies and head out, going wherever we feel like, camping outside, making love under the stars.
She listens entranced, eyes fluttering shut as I branch out, begin talking about us years down the line, the way she’ll grow round with my children, the way we’ll lounge in bed together, our little ones cozying close while she nurses the newest addition. Only in my quietest moments have I allowed myself to fantasize like this, envisioning my seed taking root in her belly, her bearing our children and filling the house I’m going to build for her.
I’ve never wanted this with anyone but her. I’ve never wanted that type of happiness with any other.
Before long, she’s quiet, the tension in her beautiful face melting under my fingers as I stroke her cheek. Stitch is totally absorbed in his work, but he glances my way and nods. He’s careful as he cleans the tears at her wrists, injecting lidocaine to suture the worst of them. I continue to tell Levi about our beautiful future, but not with words. I let my eyes tell her, the way I hold her hand. She understands, squeezing my hand back, her amethyst eyes hauntingly beautiful.
But it doesn’t last.
I carry Levi upstairs to our room after Stitch finishes. He’s given her another shot and she’s drowsy and exhausted and I want nothing more than to curl up beside her and hold her, but just as I lay her on the bed my cell buzzes.
We’re here. It’s Steve.
Put him in the cellar. I’ll be there soon.
I hate leaving Levi; but I have to, I want to, no, I need to punish that worthless fuck that hurt her. I need to see the light bleed from his eyes as his life leaves him. I need to hear his pathetic death rattle and know that I’m the one that took his miserable life, make him pay for hurting the most important thing in the world for me.
I lean down and murmur in Levi’s ear before gently kissing her temple and turning to leave. “I love you, Levi. With all my heart, all that I am. You complete me, baby.”
She hums, half conscious, face relaxing completely into unconsciousness as I move to the door.
Across the compound, under one of the smaller garages, lies the ‘cellar’. It’s a sound-proof underground room that we utilize more frequently than I’d like to admit. There’s a chair bolted to the concrete floor and a drain nearby if things get messy.
And they’re about to get fucking messy.
There’s quiet satisfaction on my brother’s faces as I enter the cellar. Henday is restrained in the chair, bent over and wheezing. Although my knuckles itch to bury themselves in his face, I turn to my brothers first.
“He ready to talk?”
“Think so. Might need some encouragement.” Steve answers, glaring daggers at Henday’s form.
I nod and turn, advancing on my prey. He doesn’t seem to notice me, so I kick his shin, hard. This gets his attention and he yelps pathetically, throwing his head back. Eyes wide with pain and fear lock on me, the whites of his left one almost black with hemorrhaging blood.
“You think you could hurt my woman and get away with it?” I snarl. “You planning on splitting her in half? Fucking her ‘till she’s cold? Sending me pieces of her?” My rage grows with each word, spittle flying from my mouth. It takes all my strength to hold myself back from tearing into him indiscriminately.
I force a step back, then two and Henday’s eyes follow me. His wheezing breaths whistle past his lips and as they curl in fear, I see only bloody gums. All of his teeth have been knocked out, only jagged stumps remain. I glance over at Steve and Thor, both flex bruised and split knuckles in answer.
I turn my attention back to my prey, back to the piece of shit that almost took everything from me.
“Who told you about us?”
Henday doesn’t answer, setting his bruised jaw mulishly.
I’m wearing steel-toed boots, so I draw back and kick his shin again. The sound of bone snapping is drowned out only by Henday’s garbled scream.
“Who told you?” I repeat, my voice deceptively calm. My brothers shift their weight behind me, ready to pull me away if my beast decides to kill him without getting my answers first.
“Fuck you.” He’s brave, I’ll give him that. His words are mangled, almost incomprehensible, but the blazing in his remaining eye is enough to convey what his ruined mouth can’t. He spits contemptuously at me, and I hear the faint clink of a tooth root hit the concrete floor.
Suddenly, I’m done. I want this fuck to hurry up and talk so I can get back to Levi. I glance at Steve and jerk my chin at the jerry can behind him. He passes it over without a word.
Henday‘s eyes follow my movements, bloody drool dripping from his chin. I don’t know if he’s shaking in fear or shock or some mix of both, but I don’t care.
I twist off the cap and splash his left leg. He squeals and tries to twist out of his restraints. I lean forwards, my voice deadly calm, so he can see I mean every fucking word.
“Tell me who told you.” I say, my voice mild, almost conversational. “Or I’m going to set you on fire and let you burn. Then I’m going to extinguish the flames and revive you. Then I’m going to do it again... And again.... And again.”
A tear of blood trails from his ravaged eye.
“But,” I continue, splashing a little more on his already soaked leg. “If you tell me, I promise to shoot you between the eyes before the flames get too high.”
He mumbles and my fraying temper snaps. I pull my pistol and fire, hitting him in the abdomen. He screams, bucking in the chair. The wound is fatal, but not immediately.
“I read that the two most painful ways to die are to be burned alive and gut-shot. You’re both now.” I pause and lean closer, reaching into my pocket and pulling out a matchbook. “I can keep this going for hours, days in necessary. I love a good barbeque, don’t you?“
What’s left of his resistance, and maybe his sanity snaps and he howls like an animal. “Okay!” Blood froths at his lips. “Okay.” He sways, as if losing consciousness.
“Was it your mother?”
“No. NO! Leave her alone. It wasn’t her. She’s got the Alzheimer's, she don’t know shit no more.”
“Tracer said he called her.”
“He did! Said he was dead, but that don’t mean she understood him! The nurses thought it was a joke, told me when I went to see her. I thought it was just her messed up head, so I ignored it too, but-” He breaks off, coughing violently. “Just promise me,” he groans. “Leave my ma alone.”
I don’t get my jollies from hassling old demented women, no matter how evil their sons are. “So, who? Last fucking chance.”
“Next day, McCoy called me.”
“Who the fuck’s McCoy?”
“Buddy of mine, we go way back. Grew up in the Knights together. My brother and McCoy left years ago, joined with Trace. You probly know him as Preacher.”
“Preacher?!” I thunder. “Tracer’s fucking Enforcer?!!”
Henday nods tiredly. “McCoy Jackson. He told me everything. Said the bitch deserved the slap, got my brother killed-”
“YOUR BROTHER GOT HIMSELF KILLED!” I roar. “He laid hands on my woman and he deserved that fucking bullet!” Strong, implacable hands yank me backwards and I shrug Thor and Steve’s grip off me, step back in front of Henday.
“That all?”
He nods, exhausted.
I flick the match head, lighting it and dropping it on his leg. Henday starts to scream as the flames flare, struggling against his bonds. I nod to Tucker, who throws a bucket of water over the flames, extinguishing them. Henday is crying hysterically, babbling.
“I said... is that all?”
“Yes. YES! Please! Kill me!” He screeches and I hear the defeat in his voice, the trapped animal resignation. Death is his only reprieve now, and he’s welcoming it with open fucking arms.
I throw a second match and step back.
His garbled wails remind me of the villain in the second Terminator movie, the howls and shrieks of the liquid-metal monster as he roiled and thrashed in the molten pit.
I stand there for a beat, until the screams lose their human edge and become mindless animal suffering; then I keep my promise and shoot him between the eyes.

Heart of Gold-Titanium Alloy: Chapter 1: The Curse of Peter Parker
find more chapters on here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16127408
Peter had always had terrible luck. He assumed that it was just a curse after Uncle Ben died and now he was sure of it. He wasn’t sure how, but he had managed to go through four parents in less than sixteen years.
There wasn’t anything that he could’ve done. Aunt May was just on her way to work while he was on his way to school. They were miles apart but Peter felt like he should have been there. At least so she wouldn’t have been alone. But now she was gone. Just like Uncle Ben and his parents. So yeah, he was definitely cursed.
It had been hell to get the call while he was at school. He left the high school without telling anyone as being tardy to class was the least of his worries. He had taken the subway to the hospital that May had been rushed to. She was gone before he even arrived.
It was a blur from there. There was crying and an agent from some child related government service or something. Peter couldn’t make himself listen. All he heard was something about being young enough for foster care, not having any living relatives and an empty apology.
It was deja vu of Uncle Ben all over again. He had the same reaction of an explosion of emotion including unbearable anger and sadness followed quickly by numbness. It took a little while longer to get to the acceptance part of grief.
Despite being young and there being several years to get over it, Peter was still tormented by his parents deaths. Then there was the loss of Ben and he was back in the cycle. It was barely a year and a half to deal with Ben’s death before May joined him.
Peter was not known for his healthy coping mechanisms. He ditched his foster home as often as he could, he went out Spiderman-ing for hours longer than he usually did. Eventually he just decided to run away from his foster home. He was successfully homeless for a week before someone called CPS on him and he was back in the system. That was the cycle. It repeated itself four times until he met Harley.
Harley was his age and was the only one that treated him like he wasn’t made of glass. Harley’s mother died after they had moved to New York from Tennessee for a business opportunity. His little sister got adopted a years before Peter even met him. He didn’t take any of Peter’s shit when they were put in the same foster home. Of course, they became friends.
Peter found out Harley was incredibly smart and had even helped Mr. Stark during the whole Mandarin thing. That was pretty cool. Harley was sarcastic and dry witted and was as much of a nerd as he was. Harley was also more confident than Peter could ever be. It was nice having more than one friend.
It took a month of lying to Mr. Stark and hoping that the billionaire didn’t care. After the whole vulture thing, Mr. Stark decided to not have Happy in between their communications. Thankfully, the guy was surprisingly easy to lie to. As long as they weren’t face to face. Then it was infinitely harder. Peter was honestly surprised that he was able to last so long.
He was out with Harley, avoiding their foster family, when he got the call. He looked at his phone and raised his eyebrows when he saw the caller ID that popped up. It was Mr.Stark. The caller picture that took up the screen was a rare picture of the billionaire looking ridiculous. He looked at Harley and showed his pseudo-sibling his phone.
“What the fuck? Does Tony just… call you?” Harley’s eyes went wide and he looked at the phone. “Well, answer him! You better tell me what he says. I thought your internship was terminated or whatever…” Peter rolled his eyes and answered the phone.
“H-hey Mr. Stark… what’s up?” Peter tried to sound casual but his voice broke and he stuttered so that didn’t work out so much.
“Hey kid, you okay? You sound nervous. Please don’t tell me you’re going after another animal themed super-villain behind my back…” Mr.Stark immediately sounded suspicious but Peter was kind of confident in his ability to keep big secrets. Not little ones, but the whole being Spider-Man one was relatively still a secret.
“I’m fine, everything’s fine…” Peter said too quickly before he covered the phones microphone and looked at Harley. “I’ll tell you what he says but can you give me a minute? You can get yourself a coffee or something…” He hissed as Harley rolled his eyes.
“Only if you’re paying.” Harley nodded and held out his hand for money. Peter sighed and managed to get his wallet and give Harley a five-dollar bill. Harley grinned and strolled into a nearby coffee shop. Peter put his attention back to his call.
“You are really bad at lying Mr.Parker. Tell me what’s up.” Mr.Stark ordered.
“I mean, it’s fine, it’s not a Spider-Man thing or anything…” Peter muttered.
“Spit it out. Come on, my time is precious. Did you get a girlfriend or something?” Peter could hear Mr.Stark smirking and he winced.
“No… I learned my lesson after homecoming. No girl deserves my flaking and all that. I’m not particularly desirable anyway. Uh, It’s not that. It’s not… anything like that. Don’t worry.” He rambled.
“When you say ‘don’t worry,’ I automatically worry. Just tell me.” Mr.Stark insisted.
“I swear that it’s nothing. I’m not dying or anything.” Peter winced at his own words. He may not be dying but it would’ve hurt less if he did instead.
“You better not be. Whatever, maybe if you ask your aunt if you can do an overnight thing for the internship, we can work on your suit in the compound. It’ll be fun.” Peter winced.
“Yeah… will do. I gotta go, I’m with a friend and I don’t want to keep him waiting.” Peter rushed his words because the last thing he wanted to do was tell Mr.Stark what was actually going on.
“I’ll find out what you’re hiding kid. I know that something is up. But i guess it’s good that you’re hanging out with your friend. Don’t do drugs, we don’t know how your body will react to heroin anyway, don’t take the tracker out of your suit and tell me if you get dramatically injured.” Mr.Stark ordered.
“Yeah yeah, of course. I’m not doing any drugs if NyQuil gets me sick. Maybe I should figure that out… I don’t want to get gravely injured and have no painkillers that will work. It’s too bad that Doctor Banner is off of the grid, he would be one of the best people to talk to, you know? If anyone knows about weird DNA, it’s the Hulk.” Peter rambled to try to convince Mr. Stark that he was fine and normal.
“Yeah that’s a good idea. There’s a woman in Korea that could be good at that kind of stuff, we could discuss it so you don’t have to worry about it. Anyway, bye kid, play with your legos or whatever.” Peter chuckled as he hung up and walked to the coffee shop where Harley was waiting with two lattes.
“So… what did he say? Why is your superhero boss calling you?” Harley took a danty sip out of his latte as he handed Peter the one that he got for him. Harley got Peter one of those brightly colored ones but he didn’t mind. The joke was on Harley as Peter loved unicorn themed foods.
“He was just checking up on me I guess. I was his personal intern so he could be worried about me? I’m not sure. That wasn’t it, apparently he wants me to work on him with some things up at the compound. At the moment, It’s nothing too cool. I’ll tell you when I get to work on rocket boots or something.” Peter shrugged and indulged in his overly sweet drink. “I think we’re going to be working with someone in Korea to work on medical stuff. I guess it would be helpful to use Starktech in the medical field.” Peter smiled as he thought about it.
“I mean yeah, didn’t Tony make those prosthesis for his friend? It would make sense that they would integrate the tech for other medical things. Imagine the kind of prosthesis he could make for people without limbs. Like dude, He could make an arm with more features than a smartphone.” Harley shrugged.
“I mean, imagine a robotic leg with a camera on the toes or something. Just do yoga and you could take a selfie. Someone could just have one rocket boot.” Peter grinned. It was a silly image.
“It would be hard to steal shit from you if it’s actually stored in your body. You could keep your tunes literally in your armpit.” Harley matched his grin. “I would have a compartment just for skittles.”
“What about rocket powered roller skates as default transportation? That would be fun…” Peter imagined Iron Man with roller skates instead of hoverboots. He would have to talk to Mr.Stark about it.
“Not quite practical but other than that… It’s a cool idea. Like extreme heelys.” This made Peter laugh a little.
“If I ever get a hold of an Iron Man suit, I am definitely adding retractable wheels that are motorized. Then when Mr. Stark is fighting aliens or whatever, he can roll away from attacks.” Peter made a little motion with his hand to demonstrate the greatness of wheely rocket shoes for a superhero.
“You better. If you do, you have to send me Tony’s reaction. I could see it being a perfect reaction image.”
“I’ll do my best. Mr. Stark does have some stellar facial expressions.”
“Why do you call him that. I mean, sure, he’s your boss kinda, but literally everyone calls him by his full name. I mean Tony Stark is a super iconic name.” Harley raised his eyebrow.
“I was kinda conditioned to call ‘adults’ by their titles out of respect.” Peter made air quotes when it was appropriate. “It kinda stuck. Mr. Stark teases me a little for it but it’s not like it’s that bad of a habit to have.” He shrugged and realized with disappointment that he was nearly done with his colorful latte.
“I’m not attacking you for it, I was just wondering. I mean it’s part of your whole goody-two-shoes polite kid thing right? You act all sweet and perfect but you run away from foster homes and get in fights at school.” Harley scoffed.
“I don’t get into fights.” Peter rolled his eyes. “Or at least I don’t start them… or continue them… Dude have you seen me? I’m a wimp.”
“Sure sure. Just because I’m six inches taller than you doesn’t mean that you’re a wimp. That just makes you tiny.”
“I’m not… tiny…” Peter muttered. Harley looked completely unimpressed. “Okay, I’m kinda small but tiny is going too far.” He admitted to Harleys delight. Harley liked being right and Peter had no problem admitting his faults. Even MJ practically towered over him. He had accepted that his maximum height would not exceed 5’6”.
His internal conflict about his lack of height was interrupted by his phone buzzing.
“You’re popular today Pete…” Harley was only surprised because Peter rarely got calls, so two in the same hour was not normal for him.
“It’s probably Mr. Stark again. I haven’t told him what happened and he doesn’t like not knowing everything. I guess I must have been suspicious enough for him to look into it. I guess I’ll face the music or whatever the term is.” Peter's heart fluttered with anxiety as he answered his phone. “Hey, Mr. Stark, that was quick…”
This time Peter couldn’t make Harley leave so he was going to try to be discrete with the whole Spider-man stuff. If he had to. The problem wasn’t with Spider-Man though, It was with Peter. He was the one with the problems. Spider-Man was relatively unaffected. And that’s all that Mr. Stark cared about. Right?
“Kid.” Mr. Stark’s voice was soft through the phone’s receiver. “What… what happened.”
“I think you already know… Don’t tell be that you didn’t do some research in the last twenty minutes…” Peter’s voice was a little quieter than before.
“I just want to hear you say it. I want to know what happened.” Mr. Stark’s voice was uncharacteristically reserved and it left no doubt in Peter’s mind that the billionaire knew exactly what happened.
“Uh, A month ago, May was… she was in a car accident. I was at school so there was nothing I could do besides rush to the hospital. She was gone before I even got there. I don’t have any family so I got put in foster care. I ran away a few times… but I’m fine now. I have an almost brother and everything.” Peter really tried to sound convincing that he was fine even though he really wasn’t. Who would be?
“Peter…” Mr. Stark sighed. Oh no, he brought out the real names, this must be serious. Peter had been almost exclusively called some nickname by him so when the real names came out, it was not to just be ignored. “Why didn’t you say anything… I could’ve done something.”
“You’re my boss. I didn’t want to… I didn’t want to force you to deal with my problems. If I’m honest, I haven’t even called Ned or anything. I’m still processing it myself…” Peter muttered as Harley awkwardly left to buy a pastry or something. Peter wanted to apologize but Harley had left earshot quickly enough not to take notice. He’ll say sorry when he comes back.
“This isn’t like not telling me about your homework kid, this is… this is big. I wouldn’t want you to go through that alone. Been there, done that, you know?” For once, Mr. Stark sounded awkward but Peter assumed that it was because of the billionaires emotional constipation. He wasn’t used to trying to comfort people. Peter appreciate the attempt nonetheless.
“Yeah… thanks but, I don’t know. I’m just probably going to be in a temporary family until I can get my inheritance. Then I can buy an apartment or something. Apparently it’s not easy to get adopted as old as I am. And I’m not sure that I want to be thrown into a family for the rest of eternity. I just… I don’t know. Everything changed so fast and I have no idea what to do.” Peter found himself frantically rambling and stuttering out his ideas.
“Well it’s a good thing I don’t have a family then.” Mr. Stark commented quickly.
“Uh, what do you mean?” Peter said slowly.
“Peter, you don’t deserve any of this. I’m not just going to stand by and watch while there’s something that I can do. That’s kind of our motto right? Reckless superheroes and all.” Mr. Stark rushed his words but still managed to sound casual while he was changing Peter’s life. He seemed to do that a lot lately…
“Mr. Stark… I don’t… oh my god, are you serious? You would…” Peter could barely manage sentences as tears welled up in his eyes. While his mentor was emotionally constipated, Peter was the complete opposite. He’s an emotional mess but he didn’t feel bad over getting emotional now. This time he had a valid reason.
“I’m as serious as a terminal illness kid. I can get all of the paperwork done in no time and poof, no more foster care.” Mr. Stark promised. “My only requirement is that you call me Tony instead of the whole mister Stark crap.”
“I’ll try- I just-” Peter sniffled and wiped his tears away, obviously embarrassed. “I’d feel bad for leaving Harley, he’s my foster sibling kinda, we were paired in the same foster house. Apparently he met you during the whole extremis thing. Small world right?” Peter rambled because, holy shit, Tony Stark was serious about adopting him.
“Wait… Harley? Like Harley Keener? Potato gun kid? He’s not only in New York but also in the same foster care system as you?” Mr. Stark sounded surprised.
“Yeah, He said that you guys are connected. His mom uh, actually he can tell you himself. We’re avoiding our foster family and getting highly caffeinated.” Peter waved at Harley and motioned for him to come over. He rolled his eyes and took his time in strolling over.
“You know I’ll have to talk to Pepper but I think that she will agree with me on this whole thing. I think that she would be fine with having children that aren’t in diapers. You met her right?”
“Yeah, she’s pretty badass. I’m surprised that she’s not a superhero herself.” Peter tried to pull himself together before Harley came close enough to see the tears in his eyes. “So Harley just came over, wanna talk to him?” Peter was kind of anxious to let himself internalize what the hell was going on. And he wanted to see Harley react to talking to Tony. Peter still thought it was weird to call Mr. Stark by his first name but he would have to get used to it someday.
“Yeah, hand me to the other kid. I haven’t heard from him since he was like eleven.” Mr. Stark chuckled as Peter handed Harley the phone. Harley looked a little confused as he put his ear to the speaker.
“Hey Tony. What’s up.” Harley handed Peter the muffin that he had bought. Peter was not going to complain, he needed a lot of calories but he usually told Harley that it was because he had a normally high metabolism rather than a superhuman metabolism.
“I know, It’s because we’re connected.” Harley smirked at the phone. Peter tried not to use his super-hearing to intrude on their conversation, but it wasn’t that easy.
“Yeah, my mom died a few years ago. My little sister got adopted a while ago. I haven’t seen her in awhile. Actually I do still have that watch… come on, Pete looks like he just cried, what were you guys talking about?” Harley started out smiling but his expressions changed quickly. First he looked shocked. Then he put his hand over his face as he started to tear up. He whispered to the receiver of Peters cellphone.
“Really? Tony, Jesus Christ… no. I’m not disappointed, you asshole. Don’t apologize, you didn’t know… shut up, I’m not crying… fine, not as much as Peter is though.” Harley smirked a little at Peter while trying and more successfully hiding his eyes well up.
“Shut up…” Peter muttered as he wiped his eyes again. He honestly didn’t think that he would have a family again. That anyone would actually want him. Then his childhood hero wants to adopt him as soon as he finds out what happened. It was, almost overwhelming. No, It definitely was overwhelming.
“Thank’s Tony… I guess you’ll see us soon. I think that we have to go soon anyway, it’s getting dark. Yeah, I’ll make Peter text you all that stuff. Now go call Pepper!” Harley weakly put down the phone and grinned at Peter.
“What the fuck just happened dude.” Peter’s comment made Harley laugh. Peter realized that this was the happiest he had been since Aunt May had died.
It felt pretty good.

being the black sheep of the family is the most fun role
So the idea for this style and format came from @jiilys and her amazing marauders group chat fics and I kept thinking about what the trio / Weasleys would text about so I made a thing
Harry Potter to Ginny Weasley: I think your brother is high
Harry Potter: like I'm pretty sure he had a little party before Sunday dinner
Ginny Weasley: quit being ridiculous, George would never pregame dinner without me
Harry Potter to Ron Weasley: what's going on with George?
Ron Weasley: he's eating some treacle tart?
Harry Potter: but why's he so jumpy? I thought he stopped breathing when your mom and bill started talking about the nursery
Ron Weasley: think he's just hungry mate
Hermione Granger to Harry Potter: Quit trying to rope Ron into your conspiracy theories
Hermione Granger: I'm trying to plan our trip to Australia and he just keeps asking me whether or not I thought George was acting weird earlier
Harry Potter: as if you'd let him plan any of it anyway, you love planning
Hermione Granger: That isn’t the point
Harry Potter to the cannons lost suck it ron: so I ran into George earlier
Hermione Granger: Where? Your office is blocks from the shop...
Harry Potter: I was craving fish and chips from the pub by the shop
Ginny Weasley: is this the "urgent business" that kept you from meeting me for lunch?
Harry Potter: there was quite a bit of urgency involved
Ginny Weasley: George is my brother? and I also like fish and chips?
Hermione Granger: But he can't get any "investigating" done if he's giving Tom death glares from across the bar for daring to speak to you, Ginny
Harry Potter: we've been dating for three years, Tom needs to back off
Ron Weasley: you didn't get any "investigating" done anyway from what i saw
Ginny Weasley: I expect fish and chips tonight, potter
George Weasley to Ginny Weasley: ur boyfriends mental
Ginny Weasley: I love how Harry becomes "your boyfriend" anytime he does something you dont approve of
Ginny Weasley: what did he do?
George Weasley: came by the shop in the middle of the day, just to ask me what was new
Ginny Weasley: well
Ginny Weasley: is there anything new?
George Weasley: I take it back, you're both mental
Bill Weasley to Snow White and the Seven Gingers: fleur in labor
George Weasley: wait
George Weasley: the baby can't come now
Charlie Weasley: She isn't due until next week!!!
George Weasley: she's early
Ginny Weasley: omg omg headed to the hospital now
Percy Weasley: How many centimeters dilated is she?
Charlie Weasley: MY FLIGHT IS THREE DAYS AWAY
Ron Weasley: percy that's disgusting
Percy Weasley: I have a very important meeting in a half hour.
Percy Weasley: I’m just trying to figure out whether I'll be there in time for the actual birth.
Percy Weasley: Honestly, Ron, it isn’t as if she can have the baby without her vagina dilating.
Charlie Weasley: I STILL GET TO BE GODFATHER EVEN IF I MISS THE BIRTH
Charlie Weasley: no take backs
Ginny Weasley: as the only member of this chat with a vagina, I decree that the word vagina is banned for the rest of forever
Ginny Weasley to Harry Potter: think i could pull off sneaking a sedative off a nurse?
Harry Potter: you know that as a member of law enforcement i really can't encourage you to steal drugs right?
Ginny Weasley: it's for the greater good
Ginny Weasley: George is pacing the halls and won't shut up about how unprepared he is for the baby
Ginny Weasley: some woman thought he was the father
Harry Potter: he does know that bill will be the one actually raising the baby right?
Ginny Weasley: apparently he's "not ready" to be an uncle
Harry Potter: he's practically Teddy's uncle already
Ginny Weasley: thus the sedative
Harry Potter: I'll be there in five
Ron Weasley to Bonnie and Clyde: cannot believe you two thought that would work
Ron Weasley: who gets banned from the hospital waiting room?
Harry Potter: we did not get banned
Harry Potter: it was just highly suggested that we wait in the cafeteria away from the medications
Harry Potter: we can come back when the baby comes
Ginny Weasley: YOU BETTER COME GET US WHEN THE BABY COMES
Ron Weasley: I will eventually
Ginny Weasley: I was just trying to prevent George having a heart attack
Ginny Weasley: you know the pacing was driving you crazy
Ron Weasley: Hermione says we should be supportive and that George is just being a good uncle
Ron Weasley: i’m being supportive by sending him to the cafeteria to fetch tea
Ron Weasley: and possibly so that you can question him
Ron Weasley: unless it goes poorly in which case I had nothing to do with it
Ginny Weasley to Harry Potter: omg
Ginny Weasley: omg omg omg
Harry Potter: why are you texting me when we're in the same hospital room?
Ginny Weasley: because I'm freaking out
Ginny Weasley: and I obviously can't talk about George's secret in a room full of our family
Ginny Weasley: he looks like a deer in the headlights
Ginny Weasley: I think he must have just sweat off five kilograms
Harry Potter: of course he is
Ginny Weasley: mums going to freak
George Weasley to Ginny Weasley: why did you tell percy?!?
Ginny Weasley: what?
Ginny Weasley: this may come as a surprise, but percy isn't the person i tell secrets to
George Weasley to Percy Weasley: why did you send me a parenting book?
Percy Weasley: You said that you were worried about being a good uncle.
Percy Weasley: I gave ordered three - one for you, one for Bill and Fleur, and one for myself.
Percy Weasley: I thought it would be best for the child if we're all on the same page.
Charlie Weasley to George Weasley: are you dying?
George Weasley: not that i know of
Charlie Weasley: I just got home after six months of working in Romania
Charlie Weasley: when the first Weasley grandchild came home from the hospital yesterday
Charlie Weasley: and mum hurried me out of the house!
Charlie Weasley: said she had a big lunch planned with you
Charlie Weasley: so either you're dying or she is
George Weasley: sry it's taken you so long to understand that i'm the favorite
George Weasley: really it's been obvious for years
Bill Weasley to Snow White and the Seven Gingers: might not make it to dinner at mum and dads
George Weasley: what? of course ur coming
George Weasley: everyone's coming
Bill Weasley: The rest of you have gotten more than 3 hours of sleep
Bill Weasley: I reminded fleur about it and she looked like she was going to spit fire
Percy Weasley: Have you read that parenting book yet? It's important to get the baby on a schedule.
Charlie Weasley: I don't think Vic cares about your schedule perc
Percy Weasley: I actually have some work to catch up on this evening anyway so cancelling dinner could be a good idea.
George Weasley: ur coming to dinner
Ron Weasley: I did want to watch the cannons match on the tellie tonight
George Weasley: EVERYONE IS COMING TO DINNER TONIGHT
Bill Weasley to George Weasley: did you seriously tattle to mum and dad on us?
Bill Weasley: dad just called and made it seem like I'm missing dinner would be the end of the world
George Weasley: so you're coming?
Bill Weasley: yes
Bill Weasley: bringing the baby so that fleur can rest
Harry Potter to Ginny Weasley: hey remember a week ago when we were here and i said george was acting oddly
Harry Potter: guess who was right
Ginny Weasley: you thought he was on drugs
Harry Potter: on drugs, got angelina pregnant, close enough
Ginny Weasley: you’re lucky you don’t have to investigate alone

thanks for the ptsd usps
so i used to work for the usps. i was an rca, which is a rural carrier assistant. out of the entire ‘class’ of 15 people who made it through the interview process, i was one of two that made it onto an actual route as a regular sub. the pay was $17.50/hour for the first few weeks of training, then it would go to 17.50/hour for however many hours a route was supposed to take.
first, they put me in a town that is 40 minutes away via freeway. vs the openings at my local office. okay.
i spent the better part of a year going through absolute hell. working 18 hours, getting paid for 6 (because that’s how long it used to take the regulars when the route was half that size, nevermind that the regulars have been doing it for literal decades and take off when there are heavy package days or they feel like it), driving 40 minutes home, and sleeping for a couple hours before heading back to do it all again. my marriage suffered. my relationships with my kids suffered because mom was never home and only slept. i cringed every time the phone rang, fearing i was getting called in. i had so many panic attacks every week, both at home and alone out on the job.
eventually there was a breaking point. people move through the mail-- it can be cheaper to send all your stuff in packages vs hiring a moving company. when i was delivering one such gigantic, incredibly heavy package, i stepped out of the truck and heard a snap. followed by excruciating pain. next thing i know i was on the ground writhing and trying not to scream. there was another snap and the pain lessened by two degrees. the people came out and got their package and went back inside. i called my supervisor.
“can u finish the route?”
“no.”
“you could be fired if you don’t finish the route.”
“*sobbing* no i’ll do it.”
she later said i refused medical attention. it took her weeks to file for me to have leave with pay, and even then she did it incorrectly. the government later came after me for getting an ‘extra’ paycheck, which we immediately had to pay because hello it’s the government but hilariously was later returned to us ‘because you were charged due to clerical error’.
by the way, i’d dislocated my kneecap. it was bruised to the bone. i had a heavy duty brace for 6 weeks and then a lighter brace for another month. i still have to break it out sometimes. i still hear it crack when i go up and down stairs. it still tries to pop out sometimes when i’m doing nothing. it’s been three years. this is going to affect me for the rest of my life.
i only came back for my last check and, after she said “some people around here don’t think you should even get leave with pay because you haven’t been here six months” despite me pointing out i’d been there seven full fucking months, i quit on the spot. here’s my badge. bye.
we were denied workman’s comp and medical coverage and debt collectors hounded us. my husband was the only one even able to work and we have three kids-- we GROSS less than 28k/year. it’s much less in take-home pay after taxes. we simply couldn’t afford it, so i ghosted them as best i could.
today i got a letter from another debt collector saying that i owe $300 for medical bills. i tore that shit up because a) we still can’t fucking afford it and b) it’s not right. also? statute of limitations in this state for medical debt is 3 years. you can try to collect, fuckers, but there’s nothing to collect. we have food stamps. the kids are on medicaid, and more recently so are we. so they’re gonna get nowhere but god damn if i didn’t get the mail, dodge the kids (spring break), and then have a quiet meltdown in my bedroom with the door locked.
every time i’m reminded of it my heart speeds up and my mind starts to go blank and i have to shove down a rising panic. this can be anything from seeing an LLV truck or hearing the ‘beep’ of a package delivery to our neighbors from the scanner. i see commercials for the usps (or hear them on the radio, particularly during christmas time) and start to cry. in a fit of frustration i looked up these involuntary symptoms and oh, yes, you can in fact get ptsd from a job that is just that bad.

Do you know of some good either Dominant Peter or Dark Peter fics?
Sorry for the delay, I’ve been busy and am just now getting around to reccing fics for people. Here’s some dominant/dark!Peter Steter fics that I enjoyed:
Angels, Devils, and Peter by Triangulum
Everyone has an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other. They give advice, help guide their human through life. They tempt, they listen, they offer help. Everyone has one of each. Everyone except for Stiles.
OR
Stiles and Peter are murder husbands.
In the Dark (Everyone Screams) by Ceris_Malfoy
Some nights she lies awake and pleads and begs the God her mother believed in to send her someone who will never leave her, who will love her and hold her and keep her safe. Someone who will remind her to take her medication, who will help her remember why she should want to wake up each morning.
Someone who will keep her for always and forever.
No one is ever there to tell her to be careful about wishes.
Sail With Me (Into the Dark) by Ceris_Malfoy
“You’re lying,” he says, begs. “Please tell me you’re lying.”
“Why would I lie, Stiles?” Peter asks calmly. “What would it matter now? I’m dead.”
The Undone and the Divine (Such Selfish Prayers) by Ceris_Malfoy
“Peter’s taken his time with Stiles, coaxed him gently into trust, into lust, into something that is so much more like dependence than love, and it works for them, but it took time, so much time. Time to tame the boy, time to teach him how to please Peter, how to want to please Peter. Almost too much, but it’s worth it now, to finally reap the reward of his meticulous labors.”
Do You Like to Hurt? (Then Hurt Me) by taylorpotato
Stiles shows up at Peter’s apartment, drunk and horny. Peter almost does the right thing—before it all deteriorates into a voyeuristic power game and Stiles has a mind-shattering orgasm. Things snowball from there. Takes place after Season Three (with consequent canon divergence).
The (Horizontal) Monster Mash by taylorpotato
It figures that, living in Beacon Hills, Stiles would eventually become a creature of the night. But he should have hopped on the werewolf train when Peter offered it, because being a vampire sucks.
Final Boy: Qu'est-ce Que C'est? by GiggleSnortBangDead
Coming Soon to a Theater Near You:
LOVE!
INTRIGUE!
MURDER!
EXPLICIT SEXUAL CONTENT!
GORE!
Gentle Roar by cannibalinc
“You’re going through some… changes.“
Stiles looks at his dad from across the dinner table in horror.
“I happened to notice a spike in my water bill. Maybe from all the sheets you’ve been washing?”
“Dad, no.”
Or in which Stiles goes through second puberty, and Peter is a total creep about it.
Id Est by cannibalinc
Stiles maybe shouldn’t have bragged about being able to keep up with werewolf endurance.
where you won’t see any rising sun by pprfaith
In which bodies keep piling up, his nephew is suddenly sprouting claws, and Sheriff Peter Hale is tired of the whole mess.
Irredeemable Filth: The Steter Collection by Twisted_Mind
can’t, can’t, can’t (this is what perfection feels like) by Twisted_Mind
He shakes his head. “I can’t tonight, okay? I can’t be what you want right now.”
He tries to turn away, but Peter’s other hand slips ‘round his neck, cradling his jaw, stopping him. “Stiles,” goddamn him, but he can’t help meeting the blue-eyed stare, “you know as well as I do that this between us is about wants and needs. Tonight is about what you need.”
His gaze skitters away, skin heating under Peter’s palms. He doesn’t want to think about what he needs. Doesn’t want to think about what that means. Doesn’t want to be all stripped-raw, vulnerable parts—because that’s what Peter will demand from him. That’s what Peter will turn him into.
But then he’s leaning in, rubbing his stubbled cheek against Stiles’s smooth one. “Trust me to know what you need, sweetheart.”
flowers in the dust by Twisted_Mind
Peter lets him get it out of his system, but isn’t gentle. Isn’t a punching bag. Stiles ends up on his belly, both his wrists held behind his back in one of Peter’s hands, the other mashing his face to the floor with a tight grip on his hair. Peter’s kneeling on the backs of his thighs, and it fucking hurts, but. It’s easy, this hurt. ____
Three times Peter and Stiles are kindred fucked-up souls, and one time Scott’s there to see it.
The Devil You Know by Twisted_Mind
He’s so tired, in every way it’s possible to be tired. He tried going for a walk tonight to prevent a panic attack, and ended up being rescued, dazed and bleeding, by Peter Hale. There are so many things wrong with that sentence he doesn’t even know where to start. Panic attacks. Being stuck inside his brain sucking so hard he needed to be alone and moving. The sense of relief that came with crashing into Peter. He shouldn’t be okay with this. He didn’t give Peter permission to sleep in his bed. His dad will be home soon. Peter’s more than a decade older than him. Peter can’t be trusted.
But he’s tired, and this feels so, so good.
Tremors by Corpium
(Stiles has a taste for him now. All Peter needs to do is wait.)
Pulled Taut by Corpium
"Right now we’re just pawns in a game, and we don’t know the rules. If anyone can play a game like that, it’s Peter.”
“This isn’t a game, Stiles.”
Something flickers across Stiles’s face, something cold and dark, something Derek can’t bring himself to decipher. “My father might be dead already,” Stiles says flatly. “Trust me, I know.”
When It All Falls Apart by Peter Hale (ElderArthurMaxson)
Stiles doesn’t know what to do.
He’s on the verge of losing everything in the divorce, on the verge of breaking down. He hates himself, hates what he is, what he’s not. He has no husband, no alpha, no mate. He’s about to lose his mind, and he has no hope.
His mother used to tell him; when you’ve hit rock bottom, the only way out is up. But what’s the point in trying to climb out of Hell, when the Devil’s waiting for you with an army of lawyers?
And with his heat just around the corner, Stiles doesn’t think he has anything left to give. He needs a miracle.
He just didn’t figure his miracle would wear Alexander Amosu and fight his battles with a smirk that could kick-start the apocalypse.
Bite Down by EclipseWing
In which Stiles is forced to survive the zombie apocalypse with a sociopathic murdering werewolf for company.
Hooked by Udunie
The car stopped right by him, so he pushed himself away from the wall, walking up to it, licking his lips as he saw the window being lowered.
“Hey there,” he said. The first contact always felt awkward, no matter how many times he did it. But at least he knew that he would be A-okay once he was on his knees, sucking the guy like there was no tomorrow.
He was a bit taken aback when he saw the driver, because… well, the man was hot as burning. Older, around forty, with a goatee and eyes so blue they sent a shiver down his spine.
Stiles had the instinctive urge to back away. It didn’t add up. The guy oozed confidence, had money and was handsome. Absolutely no reason to hire a hooker, when anyone would have wept in joy to get on his dick.
“How much for a night?” he asked, giving Stiles a long, calculating look.
He should have just sent him away, he knew it. But the deadline on the rent was scratching at the back of his mind, not letting him think clearly.
Stiles bit his lip. Fuck it.
Moonshine by Udunie
Deucalion was sitting in the corner that was reserved for special guests, with his henchmen - a pair of twins - guarding the table. He was just putting his stetson down, eyes catching Peter and widening just a fraction when he noticed Stiles. He was a good guy though, and quickly got his pokerface back in place. Nobody came to the Moonshine and insulted Peter.
“Deucalion, nice to see you,” he greeted, not acknowledging the goons who were giving Stiles the side eye. He knew they probably wanted a piece of his kitten, but thankfully were not foolish enough to try.
We Were Supposed to Be by Udunie
Stiles didn’t know what he expected to see in the closet. It was like every other one down the hallway, filled with cleaning supplies a janitor could need in a hospital. There wasn’t anything extraordinary, not a bottle out of place.
Two weeks ago, Heather killed herself in there.
Omegas were supposed to have sensitive noses, but Stiles couldn’t pick up anything. It all smelled like sickness and disinfectant, like every other room.
“Move it,” Harris barked out behind him. The beta swatted Stiles’ head with his clipboard, sending his ears ringing.
Stiles moved, feeling like he was in a bubble that made everything gray and dull on the outside.
Sometimes he missed Heather. Sometimes he envied her.
Duty by ChloeWeird
A petrified omega. An ambitious alpha. A wedding night four years in the making.
Unbalanced ‘verse by Sapphy
Stiles is doing his best to be a real boy, but it doesn’t always work.
Because it is my heart by Diablerie
“Still want him in your pack?"
When Stiles asks that question, Peter chooses a different answer.

This Is What It’s Like Living Through Kashmir’s Communications Blackout
For 29 days, the residents of Kashmir, the conflict-ridden state in northern India, have been living in a black hole. On midnight, Aug. 4, India’s Hindu nationalist government abruptly wiped out the legal autonomy that the disputed region has enjoyed for decades, and shut down the region’s internet.
It isn’t the first time that internet services have been shut down in Kashmir. According to the Software Freedom and Law Centre, a New Delhi–based digital advocacy organization, this was the 55th internet shutdown in Kashmir in 2019 alone. But Kashmiris who spoke to BuzzFeed News said that the scale of this particular blackout was unprecedented — in addition to mobile internet services, landline and broadband services are frozen, and most local television channels have been turned off.
Four weeks into the blackout, life in Kashmir has come to a standstill, with pharmacies running out of essential medicines, newspapers unable to function, and strict curfews making it impossible to move around after dark. And the situation doesn’t seem to be improving: On Friday, India imposed fresh restrictions on Kashmir, telling people to stay off the streets.
To better understand what is happening to ordinary people, BuzzFeed News spoke to five Kashmiris who have been in and out of the region: a college student desperately trying to reach her parents, a restaurateur who turned his Instagram into a communications hub, a man desperately trying to ship medicine to his father-in-law, a startup founder cut off from the marketplace, and a college student trapped indoors.
Here are their stories.
Amirah, college student, New Delhi
I moved to New Delhi from Kashmir a month ago for an undergrad degree in political science. When the internet and telephone blackout happened, my mental health plummeted. I kept dialing phone numbers constantly, but I couldn’t contact Mom and Dad in Kashmir. I don’t know if they are OK. The last time I spoke to my parents was five minutes before they shut down the phones and the internet in Kashmir on August 4. We knew something was going to happen, but nobody knew what. “Don’t panic,” my mom told me before she hung up.
In Kashmir, we’re used to having the internet shut down frequently. But usually, it comes back in a few days, and the phones still work. For the first two days I held on. On the third day, I started panicking. I felt numb. I didn’t go to college that day. Everybody around me who had families in Kashmir was freaking out too. We just kept talking to each other for emotional support.
I stayed in Kashmir for nine days before coming back to Delhi, and it was like living in a black hole. We weren’t allowed to step outside our houses because there was a curfew. We had no contact with the outside world. At one point, the Indian military wouldn’t even let us walk on the street immediately outside my house. We didn’t know if people living across the street from us were OK. We didn’t know whether our relatives who live around the Valley were OK. Eid was especially hard. It’s our biggest festival and everyone usually visits each other’s houses each year at this time, but this year, nobody did.
I think one of the worst parts of living through this blackout has been the way nationalist news channels in India have covered the situation in Kashmir by trying to portray it as normal. It’s propaganda.
Javid Parsa, restaurateur, New Delhi
Kashmir is my home and it’s in trouble. Why wouldn’t I help my people? Dealing with medical emergencies seemed to be an obvious priority to try and help out with. I have a sizable following on Instagram, so I decided I could use it as a platform to help my people out.
The communications blackout has spawned a medical emergency in Kashmir. Each day, I get three or four people traveling to Kashmir messaging me and offering to carry and deliver medicines and other essentials to people’s families who are stuck there unable to ask anyone for help. Just yesterday, we found five patients in Southern Kashmir who urgently needed blood pressure medication. Thanks to my Instagram, we were able to find a guy driving there from Delhi who was able to carry the medicines and deliver them. Unfortunately, thanks to the blackout, the people who do receive these medicines have no way of letting me know right now.
There have been a couple of times when I’ve had to buy medicines myself and hand them over to someone traveling to the region, but to be honest, given what’s happening, it’s not a big deal. If the internet and telephones continue to remain shut, however, and pharmacies and hospitals in Kashmir run out of medicines, we might need to find some way to connect the larger Kashmiri community working in Delhi and other cities in the country and raise donations to buy medicines for people there.
The most worrying part for me right now is how silent most people in the rest of the country are about the communications blackout in Kashmir. Human rights are being snatched away as we speak.
Zameer, marketer, Dubai
I live in Dubai, but my father-in-law, who has had chronic lymphocytic leukemia for the last six years, lives in Kashmir. It’s a kind of blood cancer for which he needs specialized, expensive medication each month, without which he cannot survive.
So far, we’ve been paying a pharmacy in New Delhi, one of the few places in the country that actually stocks this medicine, to ship it to him in Kashmir, but ever since the internet and telephone blackout, they haven’t been able to. He ran out of his last dose on August 8, three days after the blackout started. He’s in no condition to travel to Delhi to get it.
Javid has been using his Instagram to help people with medical emergencies in the valley. He’s also a friend from college. I was desperate, so I had the pharmacy ship my father-in-law’s medication to him in New Delhi. And thanks to someone he found through Instagram, he was able to send it to my father-in-law’s house. He missed his dose for more than 15 days, but he’s gotten it now.
I feel extremely lucky, but my story is probably an exception. I don’t know how many families out there have had to suffer because of the blackout. Every single one of them has a story to tell — if only they could talk to the world.
Sheikh Sami Ullah, startup founder, Srinagar
I’m the founder of a one-year-old startup that handles deliveries and shipment logistics for more than 200 artists in Kashmir who sell handicrafts on Instagram — and the blackout has not only frozen my business but also robbed them of their livelihoods.
Every month, we deliver more than 15,000 items across the country. Ever since the blackout started, we’ve delivered nothing. We earn around Rs. 20 lakhs (nearly $30,000) each month. This month, we’ve earned nothing.
I sunk every single penny I earned into this business, and I’m on the hook for a loan from a bank. I’m not sure how I’ll pay it back if this blackout doesn’t clear up — and right now, it’s showing no sign of getting better. I think if this goes on for another month, I’m going to have to give up being an entrepreneur and find a job just to sustain myself and pay my loan.
I spent 15 days in Srinagar during the blackout and felt completely paralyzed, mentally and physically, because of the communications blackout and the strict curfews. When I came back to Delhi, it felt like I was in another world in another time.
I’m hoping. I’m praying. It’s all I can do right now.
Hadiya Ahmed, college student, Dubai
I’m a third-year psychology student in Dubai. My parents are Kashmiri and I go back once or twice a year.
I was there for a month before and two weeks after the blackout.
It was 11:05 p.m. on August 4 when they shut off the internet and 1:10 a.m. on August 5 when they turned off phone calls and SMS. I remember because I was on a call with someone who was supposed to fly out the next morning, and then it snapped off. It felt kind of normal, because it wasn’t the first time they did it. We thought it would be for a day or two, but it went on. I never found out if my friend made it out or not.
With no stepping out of the house, it felt like solitary confinement. I was this close to losing my mind. I mean, it’s 2019. How can you survive without phone calls and the internet?
Losing Kashmir’s autonomy broke my heart. I had a lot of anxiety and panic attacks and I barely ate anything for a week. Nobody celebrated Eid because nobody felt like it.
On the third day, it stopped feeling “normal.” I tried to read books, but I couldn’t. I thought I could tolerate it, but not having anybody to talk about it with makes you feel like standing on top of the world and screaming and telling people that you’re dying.
Eventually, our television turned off too, because there wasn’t any way to pay the bill online. It was seven of us in one house — my granddad, uncle, his wife, and three kids. The kids went mad. The youngest is 11 and usually spends most of her time watching YouTube videos. The 16-year-old usually plays PUBG and Minecraft a lot, and the eldest, who is 20, is always on social media and watches a ton of movies and TV online, and they couldn’t do anything.
The worst part of having the landline phones disconnected was that it cut us off completely from older relatives like my maternal grandmother who lives by herself. We worried about her constantly and didn’t really have a way to check on her. Eventually, to visit her, we would leave the house at 4 a.m. to visit her to avoid the Indian army’s curfews on the roads.
I stayed in the blackout for more than two weeks, and I was lucky I could go back to Dubai after that. I didn’t want to leave. I didn’t want to leave my family like that. The privilege of being able to move out felt unfair.

How League of Legends Connected Me To The World in the Face of Heart Disease
New Post has been published on https://gamerszone.tn/how-league-of-legends-connected-me-to-the-world-in-the-face-of-heart-disease/
How League of Legends Connected Me To The World in the Face of Heart Disease
I always imagine the jersey: its colors, the logo. The team’s name, Vape Treatment, wraps around the emblem on the front, all caps. The font’s something reasonable… Helvetica, maybe. The logo is a little abstract, a rendering of the breathing exercise apparatus I was gifted at the hospital. Two handles, like ears, frame the main tube, which acts as a game—you blow into a separate tube to keep the ball raised at a certain level. It’s called an incentive spirometer, and it’s supposed to keep your lungs healthy during recovery. My name’s on the back of the jersey, of course, though I’m not exactly part of my League of Legends fantasy team—just the illustrious owner.
The League of Legends fantasy draft for the North American Championship Series is just a few days before the summer season. I know the names of the teams, a few of the players’ handles, but I’m not a League of Legends fan. I don’t actually understand the genre—the MOBA, or multiplayer online battle arena. It’s a five-on-five game that takes place in a virtual area called the rift. League of Legends has nearly 150 playable characters, though only 10 different ones can play in a single game. It’s a free game, one that I’ve tried and failed to play. At a very base level, it’s a simple premise: the first to destroy the other team’s base wins. The challenge is in attacking the other team’s base while protecting your own, and in facing the unique obstacles that League of Legends’ different characters add to the game’s complexity.
IGN’s Top 25 Modern PC Games
Teams crash into each other, like miniature hockey fights, across the map. Sometimes it’s big, crushing battles—five-on-five—that leave one team totally overrun. Other times, the moments are smaller but just as significant, with one team sending out a single player, like a sniper, to take out the other team’s most essential player.
I don’t have very long before the draft begins to choose a name for my League of Legends team. I don’t have very much time to research the players, learn about the roles. A nurse knocks on the door, but comes in before I can answer. It’s not like I have privacy, anyway; my mom and dad are here, both sitting on the cot outstretched in the corner. (We’re lucky to get a cot, a hospital volunteer told us earlier, since they go quick on this floor.) My fiancé is there, too, tucked away in another corner. By then, we’d been engaged for just a few days, and still getting used to the titles.
The nurse is here with my vape treatment, sorry, the nebulizer, that’s become a staple in my care since I stopped being able to breathe.
Passing Out in Walgreens
There are two pages to my first hospital bill, the one from the hospital itself and not the doctors that work there. Each day is defined by the price—you can map my health by the way the numbers rise and fall. My first day, the emergency room visit, is not the most expensive of the visit, despite an extra charge for being a “high severity” patient with a “threat to life function.” The most extravagant day was a couple later, after I thought I’d stabilized, when I woke up unable to breathe normally. The oxygen levels in my blood dropped too low due to acute pulmonary edema, a side effect of the damage myocarditis did to my heart. I’d needed critical care, apparently, for 74 minutes, which added an extra $500 to my bill for the day.
I don’t know exactly how much the total bill cost; it hurt too much to tally up the total of all the charges I would eventually receive. I do know that I drained my savings account entirely, around $8,000, before I started to use my credit card. The rest of the amount was covered by my insurance, which, ironically, had been given to me by my employer, a competitive gaming news website, and switched on only days before I got sick.
My husband—then boyfriend-turned-fiancé—and I can joke about it now. We wouldn’t have gone on such an expensive vacation if we knew this was about to happen! Of course, it’s probably that expensive vacation, particularly the plane ride home, that’s to thank for my descent into sickness. A few hours before arriving home, the airline served breakfast. I chose porridge. He had something different, but I don’t know what. We can’t know for sure if that’s the moment I came in contact with the salmonella that would later infect my heart, though. We also ate at a local diner once we returned home to Somerville. There, I had pancakes and he had eggs.
I was fine for half a day home before the sickness hit. Then it was all shivers and sweats, vomiting and diarrhea—sometimes both! I passed out in Walgreens, somewhere between getting my medication and asking for the bathroom key, to the shock and horror of everyone in the store. I went to the walk-in clinic and then to the emergency room—for the first time—to get poked with an IV and rehydrated before I was sent home. Back to the bathroom floor, alternating between shivers and sweats.

The AD Carry
A League of Legends draft works the same way one for the NFL does. Participants pick in rounds until everyone’s filled out a roster of 10 players. There’s some strategy involved, of course—what roles to fill first, how to get all your desired players. But for me, largely unfamiliar with the competitive scene, it’s about the best names and stealing my colleagues’ top picks.
The nurse starts my nebulizer treatment just as we’re scheduled to start the draft. I’m already in a video call with my fellow drafters. All of them know I’m sick. Clearly, they can see I’m in the hospital. Most of them don’t know how bad. The nebulizer is the easiest part of my treatment, it just looks worse than it is—a turtle shell suctioned to my face—on top of the wires, tubes, and cords hanging behind me.
Someone pushes “Go” on the draft once the mask is strapped to my face. Puffs of smoke dramatically plume out of the nebulizer when I breathe. Someone makes a Darth Vader joke—maybe it’s me. We move on with the draft; the good thing about a timer is that you can’t focus on your sick coworker. When the draft starts, it can’t stop. Each participant has one minute for each pick. My first instinct is to choose a full team of players with animal names, so my first round pick is Jason “WildTurtle” Tran. WildTurtle plays a role called “AD carry” for a team named FlyQuest. I didn’t know what an AD carry was then, but I do now. (What else was I supposed to do during my six-month recovery?) AD stands for “attack damage,” which means the AD carry is playing offensively. The “carry” part of the role is a nod to its importance—the AD carry starts off fairly weak but will become so strong over the course of the match that they’ll hopefully be able to carry your team to victory.
League of Legends’ virtual arena, the rift, is split in two. Both sides are nearly identical, with three lanes each leading to the center of the map. One side is controlled by your team, the other by the enemy’s. The AD carry typically plays in the bottom lane—shortened to bot in League of Legends speak—with a support character assigned to protect the carry at all costs. The rest of the players on each team are assigned to roles according to their places on the map, too: top, mid, and jungler.
But the role that can change games? That’s the AD carry. And that’s why I like it so much.
The Diagnosis
I woke up early on Labor Day Monday still shivering and sweating, but now with additional pain in my chest. The pain was more like pressure, though, an anvil and not a knife. The force was so heavy I was sure my ribs would give way to the weight, and with a crack and squish my heart would pop.
The thing about chest pain is that it fast-tracks you in the emergency room—an un-fun version of Walt Disney World’s FastPass, a magical hospital band that propels you to the front of the line. Here’s the special treatment I got: an EKG, a portable ultrasound, multiple blood draws, a cheese sandwich, and two IV lines. The doctor said a lot of words, but once he started talking about my heart, I stopped listening.
He was the teacher and I was Charlie Brown.
Troponin. Wahwah wah, wah wah. Heart damage. Wahwahwah, wah. Wah, wahwah wah.
I didn’t ask if I was going to die, but I wanted to. My fiancé asked if the doctor could call my mom. He explained to her what troponin was (a protein in the blood) and what high levels meant (heart injury). And yes, she should drive up to Massachusetts immediately.

WildTurtle
In 2013, WildTurtle joined one of North America’s best League of Legends teams, TSM. Playing against compLexity Gaming during the League of Legends Championship Series 2013 spring event, WildTurtle’s debut on the team, TSM was coming off a stagnant season. WildTurtle was a new addition to the team, a replacement for another AD carry who didn’t work with the roster. WildTurtle had always been known as an aggressive player, one who won’t settle back into complacency. Sometimes it’s gotten him into trouble, as he’s wandered out into mid-field without his support, looking to make a big play, only to get ganked—that’s League of Legends speak for a surprise attack—by an enemy player.
That wasn’t the case in his first big game, the one that shot him into contention as one of League of Legends’ most prominent players. More than 30 minutes into the match, TSM and compLexity are near equal in points and kills, each only one potential fight away from winning the game. It’s TSM that makes the first break, through the bottom lane, to compLexity’s base. Both teams have all their ultimates—the big, flashy power moves that can turn games around in an instant—when they collide. The screen is a mess of colors and numbers, spells flying and characters slashing away with virtual weapons.
But there’s WildTurtle at the back, tap-tap-tapping away on his mouse to unleash ranged shots at the enemy. With the compLexity players low on health thanks to assistance from the rest of TSM, WildTurtle is able to eliminate each of his enemies one-by-one, all five wiped off the map by a click of his mouse. It’s called a pentakill, and yes, it’s very impressive.
TSM’s match against compLexity was a turning point for the team that struggled to get itself out of third place in the overall standings. They’d always been good, but they hadn’t been able to unseat the teams above them in the rankings. Each subsequent week after WildTurtle’s arrival on TSM, the team had marginally better results—until the 10th week, where they shot to the top with a 21-7 record.
No one Choose Piglet
I’ve announced my intention to create a League of Legends fantasy team that purely consists of players with animal names. As I’m scrolling through the list, another nurse arrives, the one who comes in every few hours to poke my belly with a needle. I turn the laptop away from me, but not before giving a warning: No one choose Piglet! Chae “Piglet” Gwang-jin, then playing for an organization called Team Liquid, is a bot laner like WildTurtle. I certainly didn’t need another AD carry at this point, but there are barely enough North American League of Legends players with animal names to fill my team.
Almost immediately, someone else chooses Piglet.
The nurse pinches my belly and pulls up as much skin as she can find. She’s dodging the bruises that already dot my skin. She gives me these shots of heparin, a blood thinner, every few hours to prevent blood clots; anyone that’s in the hospital and laying down for an extended stay is given the medication.
My computer makes a sound. Not a beep or a ring, but a sound like a sword hitting steel. I think you’re up, the nurse laughed. (She’s right.) But you’ve got to go for a walk first. (Dang it.) Before I could turn the laptop back towards me, she was disconnecting the wires that kept me tangled to the bed. It’s useless to argue with the nurse, so auto-draft it is. With the auto-drafting system, if you don’t pick within a minute, the drafting system will choose the next best player, points-wise, for you.
My walk is more like a shuffle. Each breath in is a little easier because of the nebulizer. I wonder who’ll be on my team when I return.

The Next Six Months
The League of Legends Championship Series’ 2017 summer event begins a day after I leave the hospital, but FlyQuest—WildTurtle’s team—doesn’t play until the next day. I’m happy with my team, a mix of players chosen for me and those I ended up randomly plucking from the list: guys named Ssumday, Trashy, Hai, Doublelift, and Olleh. But only one of them’s got an animal name, and that’s WildTurtle.
My mom moves up to Massachusetts for a week or two to care for me outside of the hospital. There’s a laundry list of things I’m urged not to do until my six-month recovery is up, but at this point, I’m not exactly up to trying any of them anyway. I can hardly walk to the bathroom without losing my breath. And so I watch League of Legends. My mom does, too. It’s impossible to watch all the matches in a week, because there are 10, so we watch WildTurtle. We watch him lose twice in week one and once more in week two before my mom’s got to go home. Neither of us can really parse the action.
The League of Legends Championship Series continues its regular summer season for eight weeks. Each week, something gets knocked off my “Don’t” list. FlyQuest and WildTurtle win only six of their 18 games and don’t make it through to the next stage.
Vape Treatment, my fantasy team, fared worse: we won no games. Most of the time, it wasn’t even close. But League of Legends became something of a constant in my life, a life that now had limitations. I read online after the fact that the 2017 summer season was the first time that WildTurtle didn’t make the event’s playoffs since he joined the league. I learned it was his first event with the team; he joined FlyQuest only days before the League of Legends Championship Series’ summer event began. He’s still on FlyQuest now, a staple in a mostly-new roster.
He told an interviewer last year, I think struggling on FlyQuest really opened my eyes. He’s trying not to look back at the past with fear or contempt. I’m trying to do that, too.

I was hoping below a 100$/month? (P.S. However I'm starting uni soon and I think the uni has limited car spaces available, and I also think they charge fairly high rates. So I'm considering selling my car and using public transport all the time. Has anyone done this before? Do you know the difference in cost this will turn out to be? How long have i had car insurance?
Can someone please tell me where I stand on the following: I have held a provisional UK license since 4/4/06 after a few months of driving lessons I took out insurance on my vehicle with Virgin so that I could drive accompanied by my parents. This policy was taken out on 31/7/06. On 9/11/06 I past my driving test. On 31/07/07 I renewed my car insurance with virgin and with the 31/07/08 soon approaching I must again renew my car insurance. The problem is I will in fact have had two year no claims on 31/07/08 which Virgin recognises, however when I go on their and any other online car insurers websites it says that my no claims (2 years) cannot exceed my full license period (1 year 9 months) So the question is, will my car insurance be recognised by other insurers as been held for two years?""

How will this 15-20 mph speeding ticket affect my insurance?
I just turned 18 and I am a senior in high school. I live in a small area that is just between two towns. This area is known for its police; they have a tendency to give speeding tickets out like crazy. They hide in places so that they can catch people speeding; the area is generally a 30mph zone. I had a good morning and got a little foot-happy...I sped right up to a cop that hides next to my neighborhood. Needless to say, I was going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Without a seat belt. I was extremely honest, so I got a speeding ticket but the seat belt issue was simply a warning. This is my first ticket ever; the only other time I had been pulled over was because I forgot to turn on my headlights...I was 16 at the time. I have State Farm Insurance and have an extremely decent rate for my age. I have no issues paying the speeding ticket because I did speed...I just don't want my insurance to be crushed. I went through driver's education, State Farm's Steer Clear Program, and I have maintained my grades to ensure that I get a decent rate. What will this ticket do to my rate? And what is the best I can make out of this situation?""

""Why do libs think health care is a right? What next, car insurance? How about free food for everyone?""
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of 'Free' Health Care Every new 'right' the U.S. government has promised has turned into a massively expensive failure, yet the media continue to cheer supporters of tax-funded programs. Americans are obsessed with rights. We always have been. But the concept of rights our forefathers laid out in the Declaration of Independence has changed dramatically. Those rights life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were acknowledged to come from the Almighty, given equally to all people. Todays rights come from Almighty Government. Health care is the newest right. From presidential candidates universal plans to the return of HillaryCare to Michael Moores movie Sicko, its all over the media. Calling it a right is an emotional argument advanced by those who want others to pay for their health care. They bring out the children and ask whether anyone can deny them the basic human right of health care but dont bother with the evidence showing how health care in this country would be harmed by government control. A look at other modern rights might give us a clue about how well a new system would work. These rights started out as privileges, among them education and a paid retirement. Now education is not only considered a right, its a mandate. How well has it worked? American students attend school at least until their teen years, but 15-year-olds ranked 24th out of 29 countries in aptitude for real-life math problems, according to The Washington Post. Literacy surveys suggest one in five American adults is functionally illiterate. And taxpayers keep shelling out money to fund the system. Americans also cherish the right to retire but we expect to be supported in our old age. Younger workers and employers are forced to support retirees, funding another right. And how well has that worked? The poorly designed, outdated Social Security system is disintegrating rapidly as the number of retirees balloons. But once youve established a right, its difficult to take it away. The government, which promises such rights, must go to its sugar daddy taxpayers to keep the rights coming. Were already well on our way toward the health care right/mandate. Want to be more like Canada? Its not that far off. Catos Michael Cannon has pointed out that third parties in America pay 86 cents of every dollar of our health care about the same as Canadas socialized system. What we or rather, those third parties pay for health care is already determined by the government as well. Emory University medical professor Robert Swerlick has noted that the pricing of medical care in this country is either directly or indirectly dictated by Medicare. This market meddling even causes doctor shortages, he says, in needed areas of specialty. Prescription drugs are already considered a right, thanks to political moves like the Medicare drug benefit and massive media support. A Business & Media Institute study found broadcast journalists treating prescription drugs as though they grew on trees. Overall, the coverage supported the idea that medications should magically be available to everyone at far lower costs. Of course, the magic behind new rights is your money. Cannon and fellow Cato expert Michael Tanner explained problems with tax-funded care in their book Healthy Competition: Whats Holding Back Health Care and How to Free It. If health care is guaranteed to everyone, how much does everyone get? Who decides who receives what, and how would the care be administered? What happens if everyone wants the most expensive treatment available? With the wide variety of medical tests and treatments that consumers may claim as their right, someone at some point must decide where the right to health care ends, lest the nation be bankrupted, they wrote. Were well on our way toward that as well. Our rights to Social Security and Medicare devour about 40 percent of the federal budget. State and local property tax revenue, which normally funds education, mushroomed about 35 percent between 2000 and 2005, according to the Tax Foundation. We cant afford any more rights like that. But the left says tax-funded care is right for the children. Meanwhile, what becomes of them? Theyre growing up in an America where the rights mentality is deeply ingrained, and the media continue to feed them with it. When the children come of age, perhaps theyll want the right to a job. They wont remember that France already tested that idea for us, and it led to high unemployment and rioting. Perhaps theyll guarantee Disney vacations for all families and force childless Americans to pay for it. The pursuit of will conveniently fade away as they look to government to guarantee happiness. They will know less and less of a true right liberty and have no idea where it comes from.""
