hey hi hello, i’m not dead! i haven’t been posting any of my binds recently because i’ve been hella sick and i was in the midst of moving and my summer classes started :’) but im back now w a banger! this is Art Heist, Baby! by @otrtbs !! nat just got it so to fulfill my need for validation im finally posting it here! everything is handmade by me, headband is hand sewn, bookmark charm is glue and a rly small picture, and the typeset is by me!

im very emotional over fandom creators rn bc im very sick, but i just want to say my piece. as someone who has relied heavily on fanfiction and fanart and other fandom creations, i am forever indebted to the creators behind the works. nobody has an easy life, but my life has been made that much more bearable by the content these lovely human beings have made and shared with all of us for free!!!!

and these are real people taking time out of their lives to make literature that could outsell colleen hoover and leigh bardugo in a heartbeat. these are people who have dissertations to write, and full time jobs to work to support themselves. these are people who have just as many hardships and busy lives as the rest of us, but they’ve decided to devote their time and love and energy into making things and sharing them with the rest of us for free. they deserve so much respect and i am so happy to be able to give back even a little to the creators out there who have made such an impact on my life and so many others.

take a moment to appreciate the creator behind the creation and send your love to these amazing people who have helped us all in different ways, escaping our fears and lives for a minute, or encouraging us to keep going. i’m so sappy but thank you so much i love you all.

Do you still write Drarry fics? I’ve finished one your fics and I’m obsessed

I do not. I definitely appreciate the love and feedback I continue to get on the stories I did write there; I worked very hard on those. But the awfulness of That Author and seeing the hateful things she does has long ago sapped my desire to continue any stories. (I answered another ask on this some years back and things are even Worse now.) As of this moment, I'm not going to take my fic down, because I shouldn't have to punish myself, a trans queer writer, for that author's actions.* And I made friends through that fandom who I still talk to and love and respect (they also despise her.) But it's very hard to feel inspired to write for a fandom - even one I'd been in since I was a teenager, even when I believe in the ability of fandom to wrench the sandbox away from the claws of a terrible creator - when the author who's name is attached is doing direct material harm to people like myself.

Again, do appreciate the compliment. I wrote a lot of fic there, so I've certainly got a back catalogue to entertain you! I know where I moved on to is a hard sell lol (manga with a million content warnings from the early 70's lmao whooooops) and I'm pretty sure the next thing I publish will be one of my long languishing WIPS of trippy Morrowind stuff or Inuyasha darkfic because I can't seem to help myself from losing readers. But I must follow my heart where it takes me.

I can’t bring myself to hate Christopher. I know it’s popular to hate him. But it’s the same deal as dean? What crime did he actually commit except be the woman’s first love? And a reminder of who she was before the most popular fandom choice? I prefer Luke for Lorelai. But I can’t hate Christopher. Sherry whatsherface and Anna Nardini on the other hand….let’s just say I don’t take well to people willingly abandoning their children. And the less said about April’s two faced, passive aggressive mother the better.

Ps. I remembered that Anna Nardini’s actress played Mariano’s defacto stepmother and I am CACKLING!!!!!

People in this fandom hate on Chris as if being flaky is the most heinous thing a parent can ever be. (I mean, hey - I’m glad they’re all in such a fantastic place where their standards can be sky high, and that they all have the perfect parents or whatever, but good GOD. We have to stop babying Rory so much. Like aww, her life isn’t picture perfect?)

I hate to come across as the person in the anti-Chris debate who’s like ‘other people have it so much worse’, but… I mean-

Come on. IT IS NOT THAT SERIOUS.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I would happily trade fathers with Rory in a heartbeat. (No take-backs though. I’d keep Christopher, and she can pass on my father to some unsuspecting sap like the demon from It Follows.)

He loves (and even likes) Rory and is glad she exists. That’s at least the first step in being a decent parent in my books. I’ll admit - my bar for fathers is probably a little lower than it should be, but even taking that into consideration - the amount of hate Christopher gets is ridiculous. I think if you took away the fact that he’s the main obstacle to a fan favorite ship, people wouldn’t be overly bothered by him. His only “crime” is that he wasn’t around in person regularly, but his situation is a little weird, tbh. He’s still in love with Lorelai, and she sort of loves him too, but she doesn’t want them to be a traditional family, etc. It would be kind of awkward to navigate that, but he still called Rory on the phone fairly regularly, helped pay for her education, and immediately rushed to SH and stayed up all night when Rory ended up in the hospital after the car crash (the first and only real injury she’s ever had if I remember right?). People who call him a “deadbeat dad” really need to look up what that term actually means. He was invested enough in his relationship with Rory that he actually got upset and was ready to fight with Lorelai when Rory stopped communicating with him and he believed that Lorelai was behind it. People argue that he only cares about Lorelai, and always shows up only because of her, but that’s clearly untrue. And you’re absolutely right - he gets the Dean Forester treatment. He’s the wrench in their preferred ship, so they exaggerate his negative qualities to rationalize their blind hatred. It’s insane (and more than a little annoying). To me, if you don’t like a character, that’s fine - but the least you can do is be honest about why you don’t like them. Don’t try to feed me your fan-made caricatures. This show gives us enough examples of actual bad parents without the fandom treating the middling ones like they’re the spawn of Satan. Why hate Liz and Chris when Jimmy, Sherry, Anna (and a lot of times, Emily and Richard) are RIGHT THERE? Plus, I think ASP felt the same way and tried to do some damage control with the fandom when she wrote Dean and Chris’ scenes in AYITL. I think Rory’s interactions with them (her monologue about Dean being a great boyfriend, and Chris asking not to be painted as “too much of a villain”) was a pointed hint on how she wanted the fandom to feel about those characters. Funny how people will respect her authority as the creator only when she conveniently aligns with their opinions. 😒

I think I hate Anna more as a person than as a parent. April may have received some collateral emotional damage (and I obviously don’t like that), but my main beef with Anna was her treatment of Luke. There was literally no reason for her to be so nasty to him or to be as possessive over April as she was.

Sherry was god-awful. It’s probably a good thing Chris chose to stay with her in S2, because if he hadn’t - Sherry might have left Gigi in a dumpster or something.

I think Sherry abandoning Gigi and leaving Chris to be a single dad served as a major highlight of Chris and Lorelai being the “timing was never right” sort of couple. They had an undeniable bond, and ended up leading parallel lives, 19 (?) years apart. If it wasn’t for Luke (and I say this as a hardcore Luke/Lorelai shipper), I think Chris and Lorelai would have been a no-brainer option for each other. Even though I love Luke/Lorelai more, I do love Chris/Lorelai - both together and separately (even though the writing in S7 made them a little weird). I think their relationship is very bittersweet and tragic, and they break my heart a little bit.

So one of the primary reasons I engage is fandom is for shipping. Not in any serious, life changing way. I’m a romantic. I’m a sap. I love a good romance and I long for connections in so many ways. I will typically find two or more characters with good chemistry and ship them romantically because it brings me joy.

But that’s not the only reason I engage in fandom, and it’s not the only reason I actively consume media.

I love characters. I love analysing them. I love studying them. I love peeling back the layers in who they are, and why they were written that way, and what parts of them I can find myself in. I like seeing the way they differ from me, and from experiences I know.

I love relationships - friendships, family, enemies. All of it. I love the way people talk and communicate and help or hinder each other. I love the way found families grow and the way two people meeting can change the lives of dozens.

I love plots. I wanna know where a story is going, what its underpinnings are, what its major tropes are, why it was written the way. I want to see the vision that the writers had. I want to see what they believe in.

I love themes. They tell you so much about the world and help you shape yourself and your views. They show you what other people think, both creators and consumers, and let you think about things in new ways.

I love every part of media - from the effects to the lighting to the scripting to the blocking. All the background details that may or may not be consistent. I love the way things change and evolve. The way writers and directors can forget details. I love the way wacky tropes and silly ideas can become big, beautiful things. On stage, on page, on screen, or off, all of it fascinates and delights me.

So yes, I enjoy shipping. It’s mainly what you see me do on Tumblr. But shipping is what I participate in when I don’t want to take it seriously or think too hard.

~My thoughts: this really came as no surprise to me considering how the majority of kpop fans (especially boy group fans) identify as female! Seeing as I am a Stray Kids/Seventeen blog (both of them boy groups) it makes sense to me that my readers would mostly identify as female! 

Another important thing to note (from a writer standpoint at least) is the wide array of identities that we still have present within the general audience of stay smut blur (SSB)! I’ll get into this later when i discuss favorite pairings to read, however i think that this gives us one more reason to write for a diverse audience of readers who can identify with different types of self-insert fics!

~My thoughts: okkkkk i see us gays of SSB 😏 these demographics were really exciting for me to see! i think that it’s super cool that we have such representation across the board when it comes to sexual orientations present in our community! As someone who personally identifies as pan, this was super comforting to see that there are so many others like me in this little space of the internet! I think it’s safe to say at least from my lil survey that all the bi cuties out here own SSB 💗💜💙

From a literal standpoint, it also makes sense to me that heterosexuality is strongly present as well considering that often the pairs that we read are male idol x female reader so this is the perfect niche!

~My thoughts: this one i was THRILLED at seeing oml hahaha and i was so interested to see that this was nearly an even split! 

I think that there’s something to be said about how sometimes we can take our hobbies: (movies, videogames, books, kpop, anime etc)--all things which we really like in totally normal and healthy ways but also kinda like....get hornies about them too? if that makes sense? for example, i have a friend who really likes certain video games/characters from these games as a fan and he’s shared with me that he also doesn’t mind watching porn containing those same characters! (ahahah ya all know what i mean don’t even lie haha) 

what this question proved to me as that there are stays out there who practice “being a stay/being a stay creator” who also are interested in the more...horny side of this hobby/interest 😂

what is even more interesting to me is who i wonder if i’ve  have consumed any of ya’ll’s content while you have consumed mine??? this i am DYING to know aha but it think its best for all of us to stay anonymous teehee ;)

~My thoughts: once again, this category was pretty self explanatory to me considering that the majority of readers are female identifying, so it would make sense that they would prefer to read smut that aligns with their identity! This is also super present anyway of SSB as i do feel like the majority of writing pieces that I do come along are idol x female reader, and most authors too often disclaim that they are the most comfortable writing this type of pairing as well. 

What’s signficant as well is the interest in reading fics with gender neutral reader self inserts as well! this is my personal philosophy when it comes to writing (specifically with requests) but i think that writing gn!reader is always the safest bet to go as to not make assumptions about readers! for writers i think that seeing this 19% is something important to take into consideration! 

An outlier to me with this demographic was the “poly r-ship” poll garnering a notable 14% in comparison to the idol x idol option which got 10 less votes (4%). what is a little confusing to me about this is how poly r/ships often (but not always) contain idol x idol content, however there is discrepancy with the amount of readers outright saying that they enjoy reading it alone. I’ll get into poly fics later with the unpopular opinions section--however i wanted to plant the seed here hehe. One other caveat to this is the fact that on SSB i feel like idol x idol content is really in the minority and is much more present on a platform like AO3 so this could be another explaination! 

What is kinda cute to me is the fact that readers do really like poly r-ship dynamics more than a threesome (as i defined it, “with less interaction”) so this makes me feel like we are all saps for the fluff that comes with poly r-ship fics ;) 

Favorite Kind of Smut to Read

~My thoughts: Again, this is super expected to me as well considering the above statistics. Since i am a skz blog (a boy group) --as are my moots-- it really makes sense that those who filled out this survey would be into male idol smut! 

what was cool for me to see as well was the number of readers who also read female idol smut as well as male idol smut! personally, i more predominately a fan of boy groups compared to the amount of girl group content that I consume (note: i do also consume gg content). because of this, i think that its really up to personal preferences and the content that you consume that can be reflective of the smut content that you consume as well and ya know, whoever gets your hornies going ;)

*bc of the way that i miffed it (lol) i wasn’t able to get exact measurements, but rough ones!

~My thoughts: by far, the most popular ranking that i saw was as follows: smut, fluff, angst. i saw this sososos many times haha also...ya’ll got really creative with your rankings and it made me giggle hehe. So! seeing as this is stay smutblr haha makes total sense that the three most popular rankings that we have were lead by smut! since we’re here for the hornies, i totally get this. 

as for the “smut n’ fluff” or “fluffy smut” category, there was a decent amount of readers that expressed that this mixture is their fave! i’m kinda looping this with the “mixture” option that i also provided for this question since this was the most popular mixture that i was able to observe along with angst + smut. interestingly, i saw a couple mentions of “hurt/comfort” fics with this question too so this went well with this preference. as for number three on this list, we dip into that smut + angst category that I just mentioned as well. there were several individuals who said that they really really enjoy reading smut with angst! 

lastly we get to the four and five on the list: four being fluff, smut and angst. i think this category can also properly represent the folx who tend to like more fluffy fics over the smutty ones, but that can also have suggestive themes too! in five, we have angst, fluff and smut which also is representative of another theme that i saw: as far as plot goes, several people mentioned that they liked fics that start with angst, get fluffier, and then end up in smut, so i think that this could be easily compared! 

*there were also several readers who simply said “all of them” or opted not to rank, (lol me) so this really shows the variability in results!

~My thoughts: this one was super helpful for me to see!! and writers i hope that this is helpful for you too! as someone who tends to rambles (lol) it was very comforting for me to see that long-ish fics are actually preferred! what is really cool about this data too is that it is all super well balanced for the most part and nearly edqual in some parts! how i see this, i think that when it comes to preferences of length, its really reader specific so anyone could like anything! this goes into a little bit the slow burn question that i asked as well too, but it’s really cool to see that when readers do read, they kinda like something to sink their teeth into! 

i wanted to look into how long it takes you to read these words, and it appears that on average, a 5-8k fic can take someone 30 mins to read whereas a 2-4k fic takes about 15mins! idk if this says something about attention spans, but as a writer it warms my heart to know that you’re willing to spend 30 minutes of your time reading something that i wrote! 🥺

another thing i wanted to bring up is the “hard and fast” smut readers--those who like to get straight to the point, get right to business and to the juice! they are also a decently large group too! as for readers who like a nice long fic or a chaptered fic, they are super close in numbers! from this, it’s safe for me to assume that maybe those who like reading longer fics are more inclined to strap in for the long haul with chaptered fics too!

~My thoughts: ok ok so this was RAD to see! i often wonder myself the kinds of aus that my readers would like to see so this was really helpful! circling back on how readers tend to favor fluff n’ smut (friends to lovers) and angst n’ smut (enemies to lovers) i think that we’re seeing some more themes here teehee. 

i like to think that since most of us are of the college age, the college au is super relatable therefore we really like to read it! not to mention that college and high school au’s are super duper cute as well! this is also relatable to the roommates/neighbors to lovers category which is also relatable to us who may or may not have experienced having a roommate or crush on the cutie next door ;) as a couple readers mentioned, they liked more “slice of life” au’s--which both of these categories fall into! i think we as readers like scenarios that feel the most real to us, bc they are the easiest to insert ourselves into :) 

fantasy and thriller, action, more “fiction” tropes are in the minority, however i think that this can be for the exact same reason as i mentioned above where readers like more relatable scenarios. 

Opinions on Slow Burn Fics 

~My thoughts: during polling of this category, this pie cart stayed basically the same the whole time!! that was pretty cute to see! the important take aways from this survey for me is the fact that slow burn fics are generally really loved! again, lol as someone who writes big ol’ long slow burn fics this made me feel a lot better hahaha basically, the general consensus is that slow burn fics are welcome most of the time, however some readers might need to invest a little more time into them! this is also very easily comparable to the above statistics on the length of fics preferred (longer ones being the ones more popular) so here’s a lil more supporting evidence!

~My thoughts: ok ok ok so this is where it starts getting JUICY hehe (also i apologize once more for making you pick LOL) 

the reason why i asked this question was because i wanted to see if there was a correlation with biases and if there was a probability that members who had more people biasing them (or popularity I guess) were more likely to be read more in smut fics! AND I WAS RIGHT haha isn’t this so fkn cool??? (see more in the next section!) 

for comparison, i went to kprofiles to see their little survey on bias popularity and their top five.

SO oh my god my nerd brain is loosing it over this REE so, what i should note that is those who took this survey on my blog are likely generally different based off of the fact that they are here to read smut specifically, rather than the general holistic popularity survey. It is for this reason that we see Felix much higher on this list and Changbin much lower too (as we know Felix is really well known generally and globally and there are *generally* fewer Bin biased fans). What was really interesting to see what that with Hyunjin, Chan, Jisung and Minho, they still all stayed within the top five! Soooo what i’m saying is.... all of you Hyunjin, Chan, Jisung and Minho fans really must like your smut 😏 and I think that it’s safe to assume that the majority of hard stans come from these four members too ooP (and of course our Binnie too! ;) i see all of ya’ll 👀) 

Members That Get Our Hornies Going 

~My thoughts: AHH DOESN’T THIS LOOK SO SATISFYING? I’M SO PROUD OF HER!!! 

First off, i would like to acknowledge the all mighty power of Bang Christopher Chan for pooling this most hornies god DAMN while i kind of expected this, it is also evidenced in the fics that i write! recently i’ve been tracking the number of notes that my Chan hard thoughts get in comparison to other members and the differences are usually ASTRONOMICAL. He is most def the most popular member for smut for several different reasons, lowkey bc i think that it’s kind of part of his brand?? hahaha if ya know what i mean? 

As for preference from Minho on, we can see a super obvious trend that as age order decreases, we get less and less interest for reading for the member. I’m fairly inclined to believe that this has to do with the fact that most often fans (especially fans older than skz) have a harder time seeing the younger members in a sexual way, so the lack of interest totally makes sense here! As referenced above too, we found that the oldest five members (Chan --> Jisung) are the favorites for smut reading which we can see here as well when the numbers really drop after Felix (Felix coming in at 6th place on my “popularity” survey). 

Bc of these statistics, i do really feel like as a reader, i tend to see much, much more fics involving our top five! As for Seungmin and Jeongin, I’ve also seen people state that they do not read or write content for these two members bc they do not feel as comfortable, so this can also explain the lack of content. Is the fact that you read smut a seggsy secret? 

~My thoughts: JUICE TIME JUICE TIME 

Before I say anything, i wanted to tell you all how all of the juicy questions were totally optional, but i got 100% participation for every single one of them which if find HILARIOUS i guess you all are just as curious as i am?? ;) 

So! for this question, we have an overwhelming amount of readers who said that only their closest friends know which is so cute to me! i love how we can trust our friends with this hehe. i also fall into this category bc like, it’s lowkey kinda fun to talk about? maybe also the fact that i run a smut acct makes me care a little less about it all hahah 

secondly, we have the rather large group of people who said that they wouldn’t dare to tell anyone which is also sooo cute haha idk how to explain it but this was the category that i started out in too until i found the right people! But i totally get ya, reading smut--especially-- kpop smut-- can be embarrassing or cringey to share (not to mention that it is somewhat morally grey LOL) so this is really understandable! 

also my fkn hats off to all of you who said that you didn’t care about who knows that you read smut. here, you dropped this: 👑 you’re much braver than i could ever be. 

When you read smut, do you really feel the hornies? 

~My thoughts: ok, so this one to me was also very interesting for me to see as well! (also if you get uncomfy reading about personal masturbation habits you can skip this one lol) 

the reason why i asked this question was because i wanted to see if people “get off” by reading smut (whether reading it turns you on, or if you choose to use it for “material” to get off on however this might look, might be more of a mental simulation without any real like, physical getting off) candidly, I use smut to get myself off every once and a while, so i wanted to see who else might be in the same group! since becoming a writer however, i read much less and reading it doesn’t hit the same when i was just a reader bc i have a different perspective of being the one writing the smut so i look at it more analytically--i digress. 

it was exciting (teehee get the pun?) for me to see that others also “get off” on smut too--and that they are the majority! teehee it is an honor for me to provide you with the hornies LOL. at the same time, we still have a large group in the “don’t take to seriously” category which was interesting to me too! i can’t speak for these readers, but i interpreted these kind of readers to be the kind who read smut to imagine the scenes and are like “hm, that’s hot, i like thinking about this.” but it doesn’t extend much outside of these thoughts. 

What is the most popular position pairing we like to read?

~My thoughts: i feel as if there is a bit of a conflict between which position really is “the best” and while we really can’t know the answer to this question since everyone has different preferences, we can at least find out which one is the most popular to be consumed! 

again, going off of the content that I also see as a reader, i see TONS of dom!idol fics, like, left and right. also, if i may come for all of our necks, 👀 but...there’s really something to be said about the fact that the majority of readers are female and historically and socially, women are typically socialized to be submissive, so i can see why this would be why we would favor this among fics--this is even further evidenced by the fact that male idol smut is also preferred, thus further perpetuating the fact that women have been socialized to be submissive to men specifically. i’m not saying that this is the end all be all reason that this trend is present, but i merely offer it as a possible explaination. this is a much larger sociological conversation, but i think that this trend also showed itself in the types of smut that readers seek out as well--according to demographics. 

sub!idol fics are few and far in-between, and i think that this can also be for the exact same reason as i talked about above! 

When you read smut, do you pick faves to read for? 

~My thoughts: what’s cool about this question is the fact that the “half and half” nature of it also resembles what we saw in the section for favorite members to read! As we see in that chart, 41 out of 100 people said that they read everyone, similar to this question where 48 out of 100 people said that they read for everyone. What this proves to me once more is that when it comes for reading fics, there's a 50/50 chance that the reader will look at, and read it based off of who it is about alone. This is a really powerful statistic, meaning that the members who that a writer might write for really dictates their readership! At the same time, it’s super comforting to know that regardless of what you as a writer might write, there’s always someone out there who is willing to read it! (as evidenced by the 52% of people who read for anyone! this is still a large number) 

Readers: Do you only use Tumblr for smut? 

~My thoughts: when i first started out reading smut, i was in the “i just look up skz smut” group LOL so i wanted to see again if there was anyone like me--which there is! This was more of my interest in seeing if some people view tumblr as “their smut dealer” AHA so that my initial motivation. I was surprised to see that this is not the case! out of 100 readers, 39 of them have their own non-smut blogs and the second largest group of 26 people use tumblr for smut exclusively. 

idk why, but when thinking of this question, it really got me thinking back to the question where i asked if reading smut is a seggsy secret, and there was the group of people who said that it is for them--i’m assuming that these people might be part of the group have non-smut blogs and read on the side teehee. 

at the same time, there is a combined 40 people who said that they use tumblr for smut purposes only which makes sense to me, as those who filled out my survey are readers of my smut blog if you catch my drift haha  

Writers: Do you read smut, or just write it?

~My thoughts: i kinda wanna close off this survey by getting on my soapbox for a sec lol. At least for me, the most common ways that readers found my blog were: looking up a tag, and from a repost. i think that this really goes to show the power of exposure and certain tactics that you can use to increate readership of your account! new readers, if you’re reading this and you’re just starting out, tagging your stuff is so so important! 

also, as i have said and so so, many other content creators have said countless times before, reposting is so crucial and it takes little to no effort to repost a creators work so that it might reach others! as a writers, we spend hours, and i mean hours creating content, editing, drafting, creating headers all out own time to publish something that we are proud of and for you to enjoy! it means the world to authors when you reblog their work and even more when you give feedback too because this is our passion! we write for free in the middle of our busy lives so the validation makes it all worth it!!

Do you ever feel like sometimes an old piece of media was better enjoyed before modern fandom revival of it? I feel sad sometimes about it.

Listen anon….. I’m in the witcher fandom, I absolutely feel this so fucking hard, it’s unreal.

I was/am very into the witcher franchise (specifically the 3rd game) for a few years before the Netflix show dropped and HOLY SHIT the influx of shallow and terrible and frankly irritating content after the show came out was astounding. The show basically sapped a huge amount of the meaning, the fucking lifeblood of the franchise, away and turned it into a sexed up Hollywood version that has absolutely zero soul in it.

The original source material is dark and gritty and intense and meaningful but also funny and interesting with well-rounded and nuanced and interesting characters, and the games follow fairly well in the source material’s footsteps. (I’ve mostly played the 3rd, it’s a stunningly beautiful and fascinating game btw)

When I joined the fandom it was a small place, mostly full of quiet older fandom members who loved the books and the games (and occasionally the old show too) a lot and made the most incredibly good and nuanced and well-made content. After the show came out, I watched those creators get shoved to the side and often then get pushed fully out of the fandom by random people who watched the show and wanted two of the main characters (terrible depictions of really good and well-written characters, made to look like a stupid gruff hunk and a loud fabulous twink by the Netflix show, haven’t seen those stereotypes done before🙄🙄🙄) to fuck. It’s especially frustrating just considering the way fandom treats gay stereotypes in general, and the fact that both of the characters are so nuanced and beautifully fleshed-out in the books/games/the old show.

Basically, I’ve been really outspokenly bitter and angry about what the Netflix show has done to the fandom for a while now😒

And I suspect you’re mostly referring to how NWH has affected the marvel/spiderman fandom (specifically the doc ock people?) and as much as I’m newer to the fandom, I promise I really do understand the sentiment😂😂😂

What types of fanworks do you create? I write fics!  My favorite part about writing fanfiction is the ability to put beloved characters into alternate universes or into situations that never showed up in canon.  Figuring out what they might do in such circumstances is a fascinating way to study a character.  All the while, I get to connect with fellow fans as well as hone my writing skills. And crossovers!  I love crossovers!  I'm currently working on a Supernatural/Daredevil one.

What are your favourite types of fanworks, when you’re not creating? I love reading fanfiction and I really love fan art as well.  Seeing how another person pictures a character and/or how the person depicts the character in their artistic style is such a treat.

What do you like in particular about this fandom? I'm actually pretty new to this fandom!  There's just something about Matt and Frank's personality dynamics that makes them fascinating when they interact.  I'll never say no to some nice brooding darkness.   Additionally, there have been some a-friggin-dorable fluff pieces that turn me into a total sap.

Do you like participating in fan events? I haven't yet, but I would like to... but I can also be a slow writer at times, so I'm hesitant to join stuff like that.  Perhaps when I get my current unfinished stories finished, I'll give it a go!

What about your creating process? Oo, good question.  Well, I'm usually covered in cats.  I'm naturally a night owl, but I have a day job that I have to get up early for--boo!--so staying up late is out.  For now, I write when I am able. When I really get into a story, I research.  I'm a librarian, so that might have something to do with it.  Finding little nuggets of information that I can slip into my stories makes them feel that much more vibrant to me, and I hope that comes across to my readers as well. In short, my steps are research, outline plot, write when I can (while covered in cats).

Do you interact a lot with other fans? I love interacting with people who have common interests!  In fact, I have some long-term friendships with people I have met in real life who I originally met online in one forum or another.  Others I haven't met yet and likely never will, but we have been long-distance friends for years.

Is there any particular piece you'd like to showcase for this post? The one I'd really like to showcase is still in the middle of being written, and I promised myself (for the sake of my readers), I won't post stories anymore until they've been finished.  (That being said, be on the lookout for the piece called "A Stirring of Souls," which I hope to start posting soon!)

An Opening Statement

No one exactly asked for this, but I'm a sentimental sap who loves nothing more than overdramatic speeches, so I’m going to do it anyway. ZFAW is officially open in my time zone - might as well kick it off with a few (too many) words.

My Zutara-shipping story isn’t a particularly impressive one. I was a high school senior (quarantine-ior...okay, yeah, I’ll shut up) when “Avatar: the Last Airbender” dropped on Netflix this May. Many of my friends had loved the show as children, I thought it might serve as a nice distraction from the sadness of having lost my graduation, which would’ve been five days after the Netflix release, so I decided to watch it. Four days later, I was hooked - and a diehard Zutara shipper. 

Well, friends, I had a long, sad summer ahead of me, and Zutara fanfiction - writing, reading, the friends I made - was about the only thing keeping me afloat. I made countless new friends, pushed myself as a writer, and grew more than I could’ve imagined. I craved validation a little too much, I’ll admit (says the idiot who wrote 95k words in two weeks to get a Twitter group chat to notice her...yes, THAT is how “The Waiting Game” came about), but the results were there, and I kept forging ahead, inspired by the wonderful content flooding the interwebs all throughout that summer. I really did discover this fandom at the perfect time and before I knew it, ATLA was pretty much my entire life. A bit excessive, I know, but it brought me so much joy and companionship at a time when, largely, I had neither. My days were spent in a haze of Major Character Death, tooth-rotting fluff (no in between whatsoever), and flowery fire/water metaphors that I could almost convince myself was happy, even as I hid away from a world that was falling apart around me. So, no. I’m not a lifelong fan. But this fandom still means the world to me, and when I realized how much Zutara fanfiction had shaped my 2020, I decided to do something to pay homage to the fanwork creators whose work had impacted me so much. 

That’s how the idea for ZFAW came about and, with the encouragement of some Twitter friends, I made this blog and ran with it. I’ll always be proud of that, because as small a service to the Zutara community as this is, every excited tweet or post about ZFAW is representative of one person whose days have been brightened by Zutara fanworks the way mine have. Joy is such a precious thing; if I can start something that might be able to spread that joy, I’ll always jump at the chance. I hope that’s what I’ve done in creating ZFAW: given people a source of joy and a place to unleash their creativity and their overwhelming love of Zutara fanworks all at once. That said, may this week do both of the above. 

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for helping me pull this off. Thank you to the creators who graciously volunteered to be interviewed; Zia and Ellen, who moderated the ZFAW Twitter and Instagram accounts; our wonderful Brand Ambassador @hayleynfoster, who’s been in our corner since the start; the friends whose persistence got ZFAW a mention on an Honor Society stream (*insert clip of Dante Basco talking about ZFAW here*); and every single person who plans to participate - this is your week, and I hope it is a little spark in a long, dark season of our lives. updatey/announcement thing

I said not too long ago that I was done with MHA now and I’d kind of moved on to other fandoms? Well I’ve been trying to finish up my haunted hotel fic and I just can’t do it. The words won’t flow, I keep on making it more Awamomo than I think anyone but me would like, and I’m constantly trying to force myself into writing it. So I’m not going to finish it. 

It was a tough decision, but if I’m really not feeling it and it’s such a struggle then it’s just sapping out everything I find fun about writing.

Instead I am adding one final chapter to the Izuocha drabble collection. That’ll make the chapter count round off at a nice 15, and I can feel like I kind of closed the book on it. I’ll mark it as complete after I add this last one, and I’ll also mark Hold Me as discontinued. 

And then that’s it 

I loved my time in the fandom, and I had some absolutely amazing support that still blows my mind when I think about it. And I honestly wouldn’t have found my passion for writing again at all if it wasn’t for MHA, so I have so much to be thankful for in that respect. Everyone who took their time to read or comment on my works has my eternal gratitude !!! <3 <3

(Some negative thoughts on the fandom below the cut)

There were just a few toxic that let it down for me tbh - the background feeling that some of the content creators felt like everything was a ‘competition’, rather than just everyone sharing their works, kind of soured the experience at the end. It’s not okay to snub someone for doing well just because you’ve entered them into a competition with you that they don’t even want to be in. 

Jealousy is probably the worst thing I see in fandom - because it gets everyone nowhere. Sure I look at other fics and compare myself sometimes, and I get jealous too of course, but would I act upon that and make someone feel miserable and excluded because of that? No. If anything it’ll fire me up to think how I can improve my own writing!

The writer or artist who you think ‘has it all’ may struggle and worry and need just as much support as you. Maybe they’ve been editing their artwork or story for days and days and days and only then got it to the point they think is worth posting, but they’re dismissed as ‘well that writer/artist is popular, they don’t need to try’.

Or ‘that writer/artist is popular, they don’t need my support’.

If you feel jealous, remember that the person on the other side of this is just a person too, trying their best to make content that they want to put out into the world and that they deserve just as much support as anyone else!

In the isolation of this quarantine, I’m gonna resurrect THIS old ass argument. “Can Spike still rightfully end up with Buffy after his actions, and if he can’t, isn’t the same true for Angel?” and “Is Spuffy as meaningful as or even compare to Bangel?”. The following “conversation” is hypothetical and “person” represents most of the arguments I’ve seen people on the other side of this make. Person: I don’t see how anyone could possibly ship Buffy and Spike after the bathroom scene. Me: He didn’t have a soul when he did that. Once he does have a soul, the evil he did is no longer his fault unless he repeats the behavior, but their slow-burned bond and her eventual love for who he becomes in Chosen is real. It’s canon that she fell in love with him when their fingers locked before his death if you take Joss’s words as truth, and even if you don’t and need something to be solidified on the program to accept it as canon, interpreting what Buffy felt in those last moments as romantic love is no more or less provable than the “she was just saying it to make Spike feel better” take. It makes complete sense that Spike thought she was lying after all of his experiences, though. That’s part of his own tragedy. That angst is part of why we love them as a pairing. Person: Wow look at you making excuses for one of the worst things someone can possibly do. There’s no going back after that. Idc what the plot did to justify his actions, and it’s despicable to think that the show would still give them anything resembling a love story after that. Boo hoo about his little tragedy. Am I supposed to feel bad after what he tried to do to her? Me: Okay fine, I see your point. I don’t see how anyone could possibly ship Buffy and Angel after he went on a killing spree meant to emotionally torture her, targeted her friends and family, KILLED JENNY and not only got off on the pain it inflicted on Buffy’s father figure but set it up to be as devastating for Giles as humanly possible, and almost brought Hell on Earth which would have killed millions in global genocide all for his twisted amusement. I don’t see how anyone could feel bad about him having a sword driven through him and pulled into Acathla after what he tried to do to Buffy, to her loved ones, and to the entire fucking world. Oh also he tried to drive a sword into her face right before her badass comeback. Person: He didn’t have a soul when he did that. It’s not Angel’s fault what Angelus does. It’s not really him, but Bangel’s epic eternal love at first sight is real and will never die. Me: .... Person: ... It’s different because Spike is a little more human even when he doesn’t have a soul. Me: Does that mean he deserves less credit or more? :/ :/ Person: ANGEL AND ANGELUS IS DIFFERENT FROM SOULLESS SPIKE AND SPIKE. Me: Nah same lore same rules breh. Soulless Spike seems more human because William was a sentimental sap and hopeless romantic when he was sired and so Spike was a deranged version of that personality, but still a demon and still wired to do evil, no matter how deeply he feels for someone. Liam was a self-indulgent douche who lived primarily for his own satisfaction when he was sired and thus became Angelus. Like in life, Angelus in death gave into all of his wicked cravings but without guilt or remorse. Who Spike and Angel are without a soul fits who they were with a soul perfectly within the rules of Buffyverse vampirism. But Soulless Spike is still Soulless Spike, he is still supernaturally coded to be a monster, and his ensouled version deserves the same level of forgiveness or lack thereof as his grandsire. If you don’t think Buffy should be with someone who’s done unspeakable things regardless of the supernatural reason for it, fine, but that’s not what you’re saying. Me: The bathroom scene was hard to watch but an important turning point because he realized that in his chipped state he can’t be his fully monstrous self nor can he be a good man. His options were to get the chip removed and be William the Bloody again, or get his soul and attempt to be a good man. The decision he made was something Angelus would never do, which I could use to say Spike is just better, but really they’re just different people with different motives. Bangel and Spuffy present the same issues with the concept of being pardoned via soul and if either vampire is really “worthy” of her romantic affections, no matter how much you try to twist Buffy/Spike as the more unshippable pairing to suit your own preference on which character Buffy should have a future with.

Person: ARE YOU SAYING SEASON 6 SPUFFY WASN’T TOXIC?! Me: Nah it definitely was, but Spuffy fandom in large part really doesn’t want Buffy to end up with season 6 Spike. Many of us think their “relationship” when he was soulless was *entertaining* and added character depth, and that they had real moments of connection in the midst of the ugliness, but most of us recognize how unhealthy it was and that it was no recipe for happily-ever-after. Irl there would be no turning back but also irl people are not literal demons who can go and win a soul to make up for some missing piece of them, just as Angel’s situation would also not happen in our reality. Me: A lot of us DO want her to end up with fully actualized soul-having Spike as he was by the end of season 7, in season 5 of Angel, and post series. Bangel is the passionate all-consuming first love story, but they NEVER achieved the level of understanding and full realization of the other that Spuffy ultimately did. Probably in part because Buffy was a fuckin’ high school teenager when Bangel happened, but that’s vampire genre for ya. Me: The speech Spike gave Buffy in Touched is something Angel could NEVER deliver at any point we’ve seen them, because Angel never knew her the way Spike did, and Buffy’s conceptualization of Angel is super idealistic and passion-charged, lacking the full range of understanding she has of Spike, probably because, again, she was a fuckin’ high school teenager when Bangel happened. Me: If she loves both of them, which I believe she does and the creator of the verse believes she does, it would take years for Buffy and Angel to discover and know each other to the depths that Buffy and Spike already do. Never mind that Buffy and Angel changed - they didn’t even know each other THAT well when they were together. The more Angel the Series dives into the whole of Angel, the more clear that becomes, and Buffy wasn’t anywhere near her full growth when he left for LA. Why go back and rebuild Buffy’s first major relationship when Spike is right there, the feelings are developed enough to where if she said “I absolutely do love you and you were wrong for doubting it” it wouldn’t seem wild whatsoever, and the natural romantic endpoint of her journey has more substance there? Because you just like Bangel more? Cool! You do you, but Buffy/Angel is still in no way the morally superior tv couple. Me: Also, not to be a dick on that whole love-at-first-sight deal, but it’s canon that Angel loved her the moment he saw her, which is weird to me since the first time he saw her was watching her creepily from a distance when she was 15 years-old in a short skirt and literally sucking on a lollipop.  Okay so I’m just being a prick with that last part because that too is a byproduct of 90s TV and vampire genre. “Bangel or Spuffy” is mostly a “which type of fictional relationship do I vibe with?” based debate. Bangel is one of those epic earth-shattering-consuming-my-whole-being-at-first-kiss romances, and the people who love that kinda thing will be inclined to support them, and I do love Angel as a whole. What I will always fight, no matter how old this subject and these shows get, is this wack idea that there are problems within Spuffy that make it more unshippable than Bangel, or even more hilariously that Buffy “deserves” better than Spike and yet “deserves” Angel. 

Though, if you tell me you think she’s too good for both of them, you have a much stronger case there, but that doesn’t make me love Spuffy any less, nor would it make someone else stop loving Bangel.

okay so just a little thing for the followers that isn't gonna get tagged. idc if you reblog this but i'm just gonna preface that this is not some grand discourse, just me being real.

i know someone can probably see me sitting on my throne of last night's beauyasha and fjorester content and it probably seems like "hey what if it was your ship that got sunk? you'd be disappointed too." and like I get that kinda. I've been disappointed before. I've thought Character A and B have a ton of chemistry only for Character A to end up with Character C and B with D. but like here's the thing. as long as ship A/C and/or B/D don't totally offend my moral principles (in which case I have straight up stopped watching/reading things over), I usually at some point get over my initial disappointment and start liking the new thing while still engaging with fanon content of my original A/B ship. which is! a sentiment I've seen a lot of people voice today! like yelling aside, I've seen so many good takes in the past few weeks about how canon doesn't interfere with fanon! like on the whole most of us are being super cool and that's easy to forget when folks are hollering things that piss you off.

like I'm a huge romantic and I know I'm easily susceptible to "aww look they care each other. ;'))" like yeah, Beauyasha appealed to me personally from episode one, but while watching the show, it's not like it was an intense thing (bc Ashley was literally not there) until around the Orphan Maker arc. and similarly, fjorester won me over simply because it's a focal romance, because there is content and I like it, because they're sweet and prioritize each other and I'm a huge sap for that. both of these ships are not things I would have leaned into so heavily if I didn't think the crumb trail was going somewhere. I really do just tend to lean into any canon ship or ship I genuinely think is going to be canon. I'm really that kinda person.

and I get that's not easy when you're gay and want more gay content. trust me, even though I fuck with M/F ships, I get it. I was in my emotional teen fandom phase when queerbaiting with M/M ships and F/F ships literally being absolutely nonexistent was super popular. like to put in perspective, I was already an adult when Korrasami happened. when I was in high school, Modern Family decided to have a white gay dude couple on their primetime major network sitcom and I was floored by it. like that was insane and people really liked it? that's how little gay content I got. that Modern Family was groundbreaking, and yeah, I think that affected me in that I am kinda just grateful for any gay content and why I'm more than happy to get on board with M/F ships because I'm still that closeted high school lesbian who never saw myself somewhere deep down.

but this is what I learned from that. yelling about that stuff isn't going to change canon and it shouldn't. if something is particularly awful yeah, dump it, but you still gotta seek out the kind of content you want to see and promote it. like that's how this stuff continues to progress. is you say "hey I want this and this gives me this so this is my thing" and creators go "hey there's an audience for this." this is how gay and black and all sorts of creators get platforms is when people promote them. it's when you look for them. like I really do think Beauyasha is a wonderful lesbian love story and that's why I have a blog nearly dedicated to it. I'm not saying you have to quit every fandom that doesn't give you exactly what you want, but you should seek out the stories that make you happy and cherish them even if sometimes it's in fanon. like you gotta chase it down sometimes, but that's how you find the stuff you like in the first place.
