Mumbo Jumbo x Don't Starve

I drew Mumbo Jumbo in the style of the spooky, open-world survival game Don't Starve!

I chose this one for Mumbo because he reminds me of the default protagonist of the game, Wilson, who is a gentleman inventor that creates fantastical science and alchemy machines.

I also just thought he would look great as a Don't Starve character. And I was right, he looks fantastic! This was one of the most satisfying pieces I've done so far because he just fits the style so naturally.

Don't Starve is a spooky, yet cute, rogue-like survival game that takes place in a randomly generated open world.

You play as a character that has been dropped into an unforgiving other world. Your goal is to survive and, when you enter story mode, try to find and defeat the entity that has trapped you there.

The game is very difficult as you only have one life to gather supplies, build tools, and try and live as long as possible. Nearly everything tries to kill you, and you have to also monitor your sanity, hunger, and environmental conditions, which can also kill you. When you play this game you will die many, many times, but it is always fun to restart and figure out ways to survive more successfully the next time.

The style of the game is heavily inspired by Tim Burton and the gameplay itself is fairly reminiscent of Minecraft on hardcore mode. The world of Don't Starve is strange and at times a little unsettling, but also full of funny moments. Overall, the game is a delight to explore, just expect to die a lot. And anyway, there are always mods (lots of mods) if you want to make the game a little more forgiving.

Style references:

The style is very sketch-like with lots of points and spirals. The palette is muted with most (though not all) player characters being primarily red, white, and black (like Mumbo).

I made Mumbo a little taller than the average Don't Starve character since I imagine him as very tall in Minecraft. There is precedent for this in-game since the guy that brings you to the other world, Maxwell, is very tall.

The Don't Starve title font. I downloaded a font called October Crow to make the title for this piece, so it isn't exact, but I think it looks really close.

I think it’s really telling that “edgy” and “angsty” content, tropes and characters still have a stigma of shame attached to them. It’s still the butt of a lot of jokes and is usually assumed to be “vent writing.” Of course, there’s nothing wrong with vent writing, it’s extremely healthy and a very valid way to process things, but, content like that shouldn’t be hailed as “good” only when it’s labeled as a personal vent.

But on an actual serious note, this is something that a lot of us (myself included) were shamed for enjoying once we became preteens and teenagers; I think that’s where a lot of the stigma still comes from, being told that your emotions are ridiculous and that expressing them with alternative music, dark fantasy books and strange coping mechanisms was bad and weird. Don’t feel bad for your edgy content! Process your emotions, get them out, explore the psychology of your character’s ups and downs without being worried about being called “edgy” or “angsty”. That’s the whole point. Bringing things forward and looking at it from a fresh angle. Writing gives you the incredible chance to explore darker topics in a safe environment. There’s nothing wrong with you if you ENJOY exploring those topics— it doesn’t make you an ax murderer or a psychopath or an abusive person, it doesn’t mean you’re trying to achieve a fulfillment fantasy, and if someone tells you otherwise, they’re incorrect. Frankly, the nicest people I know? They write the most fucked up shit. Just tag the triggering content and all is good.

I'm literally considering writing my thesis on published fanfiction. There's so much of it!! Especially if you prescribe to the thought of there being "no original idea" since pretty much everything these days is inspired by or written in line with works that already exist!

Examples of Fanfiction in popular media:

The musical Rent is based off the opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini written back in the 1890's

Gone girl by Gillian Flynn is inspired by real people!! It was written after that super popular trial about Scott and Laci Petterson and the shit storm that went on during it.

Literally anything that involves any kind of Greek/Roman/Norse/etc God's in a story setting IS FANFICTION!!! There's a preconceived idea of who/what they are and we write little stories about that that don't connect or add to their lore!! It's ~~fanfiction~~.

And if we want more on the nose fanfiction publications:

The Love Hypothesis by Ally Hazelwood was literally originally Star Wars fanfiction.

After by Anna Todd, you know, the one that has a shit ton of sequels and movies, was originally One Direction fanfiction straight from WATTPAD.

Fifty Shades of Grey was originally Twilight fanfiction.

And some more that I think are also super on the nose but don't take the form of internet ships:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. It's literally an AU, they just took the original work and said "what if we add Zombies?"

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett is also literally an Armageddon AU. They're writing fanfiction about the original fanfiction.

Also Nick by Michael Farris Smith is Great Gatsby fanfiction. It's literally another author making a head cannon of what Nick's life was like before the books. It's fanfiction.

All of this to say:

Published fanfiction is not new and I'm sure if any one of us took a proper deep dive we would find published fanfiction not just in our modern age but also hundreds of years ago.

Lady in fic group: fanfic is nowhere NEAR the same thing as published works, there are NO published fanfics because published work is entirely original without connections to other works, so stop pretending they have the same value!

Me: there are actually published fanfics so sometimes they are the same thing, and they do have the same value, see?

gem's design is based off a doodle by genrih! i tried to emulate aspects of some of mumbo's skins in wumbo (iconic suit + tie) and gumbo (hippie skin) but really the only thing mumbo-esque about dumbo is the change in mask and colour scheme. still i think i did a good job :3
