The CBS version of Ghosts is yet another example of why we Americans can't have nice things. In so many ways, it is a cheap knock off of the BBC version. The plot points for the majority of the episodes I have seen so far have been directly lifted from BBC, but the humor has been beaten to death and left in a ditch. It's awful. However, it doesn't have to be that way. There are parts of the show that are original, and those are the best episodes. Let's begin.

To start with, all of the characters are direct rip offs of the BBC Ghosts. Off the top of my head, we have Isaac for The Captain, Hetty for Fanny, Alberta for Kitty, Trevor for Julian, Thor for Robin, Pete for Pat, and so on. This would be fine if there was any kind of chemistry between the characters/actors, but there isn't. I am of the belief that no matter how bad something is, you should never blame the actors. The main BBC Ghosts cast have been working with each other for YEARS, so obviously everything feels more geniune. But the jokes are so much more snappy and well delivered in the British version. I don't know if that is British versus American humor, or what. Even so, that doesn't extend to the blatant ripping off of so many episodes.

All of that being said, please let me tell you what I do like about the CBS version of Ghosts. Nothing is original until episode 9, titled Alberta's Fan. The episode is about a freaky fan of Alberta who wants to stay on the house and look at her stuff. At first, everything seems normal. He presents himself as an historian writing about her before it is revealed he is just a wierdo with her faced tattooed on his back and her toenail in a vial. I think it shows the potential of the show when it goes for original story lines. The humor is better now that it wasn't a badly told pre-existing joke. The fact that Alberta's family is from Tulsa may have contributed to me liking it. :)

However, the very next episode seems to go back to plagerising the original series, although it is a bit more creative and palatable than before. Long story short, Jay gets possessed by Hetty, who uses his body to experience life again. While original in the possession area, it reminded me of Redding Weddy, where Fanny is attracted Mike and struggles to come to terms for it. Strangely enough, Oklahoma is mentioned again for some reason.

One last thing before the final thoughts. The Plague ghosts versus the Cholera ghosts. I was showing my friend (@pokegirl0238) the BBC version, and she loved how chill the Plague Ghosts were. They are everything the Ghosts upstairs are not (not to mention they are played by the same actors). I just don't get that same dynamic with the Colera victims, which is fine. I have just been preaching and screeching about originality after all.

Final Thoughts:

I like that Isaac can be open about being gay. I think it's so cute that he's in a relationship with that British officer (can't remember his name sorry). I just know that if The Captain were to ever admit it and know that there is nothing to be ashamed of and that the people he cares for accept him, he will move on (get sucked off). There are opportunities for these American characters because they are so new. They don't have to stay as copies. They can have lives. But the writers can't seem to understand that. At least, not from what I have seen.

How I push through writing when I don't feel like writing.

Here are some of the techniques that I use to help me write more often or more consistantly when my laziness/depression/anxiety starts to take over.

I watch TV. I don't do it with the purpose of zoning out though. I watch something popular and well-liked such as the LOR or Harry Potter to get new ideas on how I can develop my story and apply their in-depth world-building ideas to help develop mine. Without plagarizing of course!!!!

Zoning out and daydreaming. As I have mentionned before, daydreaming is a huge part of my story outlining and world-building process. I'll stand in the shower, or take a walk and think about how my charcaters would act/react/behave in situations, mundane or not. Doing this gives me a better sense of my characters, and sometimes gives me ideas for scenes I use later on.

Work on writing related projects. These work well at keeping me distracted while still being productive on my writing goals. Example, I have one story I am working now, I made a new language (alphabet and numbers included) to include as a cool and fun component for the book. So, at times when I don't wan't to write, I continue creating the dictionary (very fun, 8/10 would recommend). Also, for the same book, my characters don't work off the Georigian calendar and 24 hour clock, so I've been working at creating a new calendar (harder than it seems, 2.5/10 dont recommend). These are side projects that help my story, without having to write.

Reading. You saw this one coming, I know. Reading is great, especially when you're editing, your writing style will unconsciously change to be more similar the author you were just reading. Also, most importantly, I'll be reading and think, "this story is really good, but you know what story I like even better? Mine." then change to writing.

This one is my biggest life saver!! I learnt about a year ago that sometimes I'll get bored of writing a story, and have difficulty keeping on track. That's why I finished my first book in 2016 and just started editing the first draft last week. The solution for me was to work on multiple projects at once, because it was much harder to be bored of multiple stories. I stick to 2, but will sometimes add a third. This is easy for me, because I have a list of over a dozen series I want to write. Don't abandon one project for another, use them as a distraction/ motivation for each other, so you're always furthering at least one project. I've never heard someone say, "oh no, i accidentally worked on this other writing project for three months instead of the other writing project I was doing. Dammit." No, we're just happy we have written something. Be sure to have well outlined story lines before starting, don't just start writing randomly or you'll reach a point where you don't know where to go from there.

Author/ writer projects. Maybe this is building a following, or community to share your projects and engage with. Tumblr, Insta, Reddit, whatever it is. My hope this year is to start up my website to offer publishing services (editing, graphic design, short writing courses) and build a following as a writer. (See what I did there? Never a bad time to self-promote ;) ) Having your own projects like this will help you in the future when you're going to try to publish and sell your books!

Talk with friends and a writing community. Never underestimate the passion that will burn inside you when talking about your story, or when others are talking about theirs. Surrounding yourself with a positive writing community can be the best thing for you as a writer.

Write or read (your story) every day. I'm not going to be one of those people that say you need to write 1000 words a day, that's a lot. But maybe try for 100? That could maybe only take 5 minutes, and at the end of the year that's still over 36 thousand words of a novel. Or just read your story, and I've always found it helped me get in the creative mood.

Make a playlist of songs that remind you of your characters, your story, or just puts you in the mood to write. Then play it ONLY when you're having trouble writing. Playing it while writing will not help, you'll get annoyed with the songs.

Just really can't do it today? That's okay, take a break. You deserve it. There's always tomorrow.

The argument from the previous evening lingered like a haunting specter, leaving both you and Felix in a state of disquiet. It was a restless night, marked by a conspicuous silence, and the awkwardness in the air felt heavy and oppressive.

The disagreement had begun innocuously enough, a minor misunderstanding that had unexpectedly snowballed into a full-blown argument. Your intention was simple – to express your affection and connect with Felix during his work hours, mirroring the love and attention he consistently showered upon you. However, it seemed like your well-intentioned efforts had crossed a line, and it left both of you feeling hurt and misunderstood.

With the dawn of a new day, you held onto a glimmer of hope that it would bring a fresh start, an opportunity to mend the rift that had grown between you and Felix. He broke the silence with a gentle but firm directive, "Get ready," and there was something resolute in his voice that compelled you to obey. As you both settled into your seats, the conversation was tentative, stilted at best. The burden of the unresolved argument weighed heavily upon you, and the silence between you two felt like an insurmountable divide. You were desperate to bridge the gap, to ease the awkwardness, and finally, you mustered the courage to speak.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to—" you began, but Felix, ever the considerate one, gently interrupted you, his voice a soft murmur in your ear. "Shhh, don't worry about it, hon."

His arms enveloped you in a comforting embrace, and you could feel the steady rhythm of his heart, a reassuring beat against your chest. In that embrace, he began to speak, his voice filled with heartfelt sincerity.

"I'm deeply sorry for what I said last night," Felix confessed earnestly. "It was rude of me, and I really didn't mean it. I cherish your texts throughout the day, and I beg you not to stop."

Tears welled up in your eyes as you looked up at him, the emotion in his eyes mirroring your own. It became apparent that the argument had taken a toll on him, just as it had on you. The raw vulnerability at that moment, as you held each other close, felt profound and healing.

Felix leaned in to kiss your cheek tenderly, his lips a gentle caress. His gaze met yours, and you could see the glint of moisture in his eyes, a testament to the depth of his feelings. Your own eyes mirrored his, and you smiled, a small but genuine one, in acknowledgment of his apology and the love that bound you both.

He took your hand, fingers interlocking, and guided you to sit closer to him, abandoning the space across the table. The physical closeness felt like a bridge, spanning the emotional gap that had separated you earlier. Your fingers brushed against each other as you shared a delicate tart, the sweetness of it resonating with the newfound warmth in your relationship.

As Felix bit into a tart, a playful giggle escaped his lips, breaking the tension that had haunted you for so long. You couldn't help but ask, "What's so funny?"

His eyes twinkled with affection, and he responded, "I don't know. I just love you so much."

Hii, please treat is as compliment but im amazed how multishipper you can be! wish i could be as well, so i could enjoy all the fics instead of sticking to 1-2 ships per fandom. If you dont mind me asking, when you write do you have problems with ships colliding? like when you write NG smut scene and then later for BG and Tom feels like cheater to have both harry and hermione or you can easily separate your thoughts and plans for these pairs? im just curious how do you see and feel it and if you have times where you prefer one of the ships more and cant get into another bc of that or you can even get into totally new one. Or are you just open minded to any relationships and can easilly imagine scenario for them? Im unable to do that without my internal shipper involved sadly

hi! No, I don't have a problem at all shipping different characters, in any combination really. For me, it's not about Person A being the perfect match for Person B, end of story. It's really much more about the circumstances. The reason I like Harrymort isn't because I think Harry as an individual makes sense for Voldemort as an individual. I don't. What makes me like it is the countless circumstances that force them together (and I mean together in the literal sense) in the canon. The prophecy, the soul shit, the similarities, the fact that Voldemort is constantly calling him 'his' and the fact that Harry gets an in-depth education on TR's life and the biggest thing he learns is that TR is very handsome. But if it would have been a different person in Harry's person, I probably would have been more drawn to that.

I think most people have the ability to fall in love with just about anyone (within reasonable expectations) if the circumstances are right. That does not mean I can easily imagine those scenarios. Blood and Gold took a lot of world building for me to think, all right, these two are going to want to kill fuck each other. And all good, convincing fics do take a lot of work. AND, if I'm being honest, I've been thinking about that werewolf!Draco Dramione fic kind of nonstop the past few days, because the circumstances would be just so much fun to write, and probably one of the few ways I could write that ship where Draco would be worthy of someone like the baddie Hermione (also because I can't stop imagining how cute a Mentor Remus and then therefore Sirius would end up being in that story, because that's def what would happen, and the way I see it in my head, it's adorable, three Wolfie doggos outcasts being miserable together, and Harry being hella jealous that Draco's spending time with them when he's stuck at umbridge's Hogwarts, and I kind of need it. but that's not what you were asking).

Anyway, short answer - no, I don't feel like they're 'cheating' on each other, I keep my stories all very firmly separate from each other in that regard!

First off you're amazing and a gift to the world, I wish I had even half your talent. Your last piece blew my mind and I just HAD to ask,

How long have you been drawing/painting for? I imagine forever but I'm always curious how long it takes before artists reach these sorts of levels where it evolves into full-scale projects as opposed to smaller hobbyist crafts. There are so many beautiful art pieces on this platform as a whole and I'm constantly baffled by it all

Hi and thank you! That's a good question

So I've been drawing since I was born, but I've been drawing digitally for 8 years. I think in the very beginning most artists should just focus on having fun, you'll basically improve by default

after a while you will want to improve. It will be slow, but this is the stage where you'll recognize what you need work on

I'd say the turning point is when you've finally gotten far enough into your art journey without any sort of formal training (ie, a lot of artists dont learn the basics/fundamentals first, which is fine since most of us start as hobbyists) But I think learning them really did help me a lot. You start to think more about how light and shadow lays, depth, 3D objects, and more.

I highly recommend watching this video about levels of art, it's been really helpful and motivating to me throughout the years

This part is going to be long so you don't have to read it but I just wanna give my personal journey and how I got to now if anyone thinks it'll be helpful:

(2017) With digital art, I started off on ms paint and occasionally ibis paint x. Mostly using anime deviantart bases (EMBARRASSING), but after a while I developed my own style based on the people I was inspired by at the time, I was just happy to draw and didn't care much about improving at this time

(2019) The people you look up to artistically will naturally change over time (and thats okay), after a while I decided to switch to firealpaca, where I guess I got more invested on how light and shadows work, as well as making my characters look a bit more natural and develop my own style, your preference in aesthetic may also change over time which is noticeable here

(2021) Eventually, I began to lean more into semirealism (which isn't everyones preference and thats okay! realism shouldn't be the ultimate end goal of art) but I really enjoyed making stylized characters look 3D and in natural looking environments, since I felt it spoke to my own experiences, a lot of artists draw from real life experiences. I focused more on anatomy at this time as well as textures and environments, composition also became a big deal for me at this time, as well as wanting to use different colors

(2024) The change from LINEART to DIGITAL PAINTING in 2022 was the hardest for me once I switched to clip studio paint, it was basically like starting all over and I was so lost. I had a lot to figure out on my own but I knew it was a transition I had to make to draw the kind of art I wanted. But I began to study and take more things into consideration, I didn't like my art so I simply kept going "I can do better", learning from my previous mistakes and slowly making something I would be more satisfied with. At this point art felt more like "projects" then anything, because I wanted to make pieces that were of quality and had time and care put into each of them, sure it meant there was no longer much quantity. but hey that's what my smaller Cult of the Lamb lineart drawings are for!! 💙

I'm still growing and I definitely have a long way to go, but I am very proud of my progress this year, and I'll continue to grow until I'm satisfied (haha im stubborn) I also want to develop my secondary lineart style that I do when I'm not painting, since I feel that is important too

in short; time, practice, dedication, and passion are the most important, draw what you love above all else because it will be your drive to keep going, staying motivated was the most important for me

Ope, another new character that's not actually new and has technically been a full fledged character in my brain for a while now.

Their name is Angel, and their basic premise is that they are a "Guardian" (creature made to look after a human, read specifics under cut) of a girl named Lilly.

Again, I go a bit more in-depth after the cut, but feel free to send me asks about them!!

(TW: SH and Attempted Suicide mentions under the cut. I will highlight the paragraph/s containing this in red, so you can skip over them if you would like)

Background Information:

Angel lives in a world where about 1 in every 3 people are granted a "Guardian" at birth. Most people only get one Guardian, and its rare (nearly unheard of) to have more than one. The purpose of a Guardian is to help their human with making decisions, though that's not to say Guardians dont have their own personalities. Guardians look and act like humans, but are much smaller (they are normally 9-12 cm tall once full grown). Guardians also mature at the same pace as humans, and do grow to get taller and or more mature as they age.

Guardians dont need food or water, but many choose to eat and drink because they like the taste.

Each Guardian has the ability to sprout wings. Their wings are part of the Guardian, and cannot be changed or altered, though the type of wings a Guardian is born with can be anything from bird like to bat like. Guardians also posses the ability to teleport to the human they Guard.

Guardians are near unkillable, the only way to kill one being that both of their wings need to be cut off.

Angel is a Guardian of Lilly, alongside Lilly's other Guardian, Ash. As depicted above, Angel does not look human at all, something they are mocked for constantly. They have paws, fluffy ears, and have white and black fur all over their body. They also have a tail (which is not shown in the picture).

Angel and Ash got their names from a common phrase which refers to the Guardians as "an Angel and a Devil". The phrase was originally something to degrade people who had 2 Guardians, since many thought that those born with 2 Guardians were cursed to be born with one angel and one devil. But since that theory has been debunked in modern times, its now used to say that someone has 2 Guardians.

Angels story:

Angel had a normal childhood, but things started getting rough when Lilly started school. Kids would point out Angels strange appearance, some being meaner about it than others. After the kids started to get meaner to both Lilly and Angel around 4th-5th grade, Lilly stopped claiming Angel and ignored them. This caused Lilly to start really bonding with Ash, while her and Angel did not get that same bond.

Angel is also ignored by Lilly's family, since most people in her family dont have Guardians and, as such, dont know how to interact with them. Both of these factors worsened once Lilly hit middle school, and she herself started bullying Angel as well. Her and Ash started mocking Angel and making backhanded comments about them to their face. They would also play pranks on Angel, directly putting them in harms way.

Often, when it came to holidays, Angel wouldn't get gifts, and if they did it was often something small or something Lilly or Ash discarded because they got a gift they didn't want.

Once in Highschool, Lilly and Ash started to get more elaborate with their pranks. Lilly read online a meme that was along the lines of "Technically, since Guardians are small enough and they cant die, you could eat them lol", which Lilly then took as a great prank to pull on Angel.

In short, Lilly ate Angel and kept them for about 5 days before spitting them back out.

While in Lilly's stomach, Angel started to reevaluate their worth to Lilly, and confidently decided that they were practically useless. Lilly was functioning just fine without Angel, and they didnt think they would be missed.

The night they were let back out, they waited till everyone was asleep and went to the kitchen. They tied a string to the hilt of a knife and anchored it to a drawer handle, acting like a makeshift guillotine. They placed the joint connecting their wing and torso under it and let go of the string. Their wing was severed from their body, the resulting pain making them scream for a moment. After calming down, they pulled the string to bring the knife in the air once more. Right as they positioned their second wing, Lilly's mom entered the kitchen. Upon seeing Angel, she quickly screamed for Lilly to wake up. She picked up Angel, wrapped their nub with a paper towel, and threw them into Lilly's hands. She tossed the wing into a bag with ice and ran to the car.

Once at the ER, the doctors tried to reattach Angels wing, but unfortunately it did not work.

After this incident, Lilly realized just how drastically mean she has been to Angel. Since it had just been the norm to her, and since Angel had never fought back, she hadn't thought to stop till then. She decides to try and be better towards Angel, working to build a bond with them.

What my drawing depicts is a moment a few days after the incident. Angel had by then convinced themself that they are only useful when they are "food", and in the drawing, Angel is trying to convince Lilly to eat them again.

So ya, my poor poor trauma ridden Angel......

i dont know if i know how to articulate what im trying to articulate but i think netflix TUA's preoccupation with romantic love as a subtheme is fucking fascinating. ive seen a lot of people wax poetic about why five "cant" have a love interest, lest the wider themes of the story suffer for it; i find this a somewhat confusing narrative, given that the show has bent itself backwards to crowbar in six (SIX) characters entirely original to the adaptation, for the specific purpose of portraying the siblings falling in love. nobody says that diego or luther or allison "can't" have a love interest, lest it inevitably sacrifice some ephemeral thematic cohesion. five's love for his family isn't, like, some special and untouchable narrative force that can't be tainted by nuance. i think the general agreement that it is is a fascinating example of getting too caught up in your analytical understanding of the subtext of a piece of media-- like, so caught up in it, that you know and understand that five loves his family, but you forget that he's, like, really fucking mean to them, and also like personally responsible for a lot of their grief, and also deliberately portrays himself as a villainous force in their lives. Like on purpose. On purpose he does that.

so, like, i don't know. the show is already preoccupied with this tension between the siblings' devotion to each other, and the formation of new connections (usually romantic ones). given the shows semiconservative social structure, i would even posit that this plays into it's wider theme of "family", by being an example of people within a family unit starting their own (nuclear) families, starting with a spouse and then with children. you can see this done with more cohesion in s1 with allison and her ex i forgot the name of (and claire, for the children aspect), in s2 with viktor and sissy (and harlan), and in s3 with diego and lila. "romantic love" as a theme and "family" as a theme are really not mutually exclusive

and i'm not really talking about five being widely headcanoned as aromantic, because i think people are entitled to headcanon whatever they want, including and especially queer headcanons. i think positing that it was ever canonical intent for five to be aromantic is a willful misinterpretation of the text, but i don't blame people for being disappointed he was not spared the Love Interest treatment

so anyway, i think the balancing of the two themes of "family" and "romantic love" is often in service to the narrative in s1-3. the tensions of familial obligation (allergorised by the latest apocalypse situation) and one's love for a partner is done very well with sissy, ray and sloane, in my opinion. however. this balance completely falls apart in s4. because s4 didnt have enough time to properly develop literally anything it did, and because of what, from my limited understanding as an audience member, seems like a genuine preoccupation with making the teenaged boy kiss his much older costar, the balance of these themes was tossed away in the name of emphasizing one over the other. it begets a deeply cynical view of family and love, the more you look at it.

in s4 of tua, nobody who is in a relationship is happy. allison is divorced. diego is insecure and distrustful of lila. lila is unfulfilled and overwhelmed with the depth of labor she has to do for diego. sloane is dead. five and lila is a doomed tryst that disintegrates five's relationship with one of his brothers and lila's entire marriage. even the villains get their own little embarrassing insecurity-about-cheating arc. ben and jennifer's love literally causes the end of the world. it doesn't get more explicit than that, does it? ben and jennifer's love causes the fucking world to end. their love causes the world to end with such intensity, every other character has to kill themselves to fix it.

what you all are disenfranchised with is not the presence of romantic love as a theme in netflix TUA. what you are disenfranchised with is the fact that s4 of netflix TUA posits that love is hell, love is pain, love is pointless, and love is fucking selfish. love is so selfish, it will make you cheat on your husband, betray your brother, lose the man you remade the world for, and end the world.

it even extends beyond romantic love; even the familial relationships portrayed are awkward, stiff and loveless. viktor tells allison, point blank to her face, that he doesn't want to be her friend. allison resents klaus for needing her help. klaus resents allison for acting like his savior. luther is mocked by the narrative, for being kind and cheerful and full of love. he is portrayed as childish and goofy, to the point of ridicule, for being the only sibling dedicated to keeping their miserable family together. viktor tells allison point blank to her face that he doesn't want to be her friend. are you hearing me? viktor tells allison point blank to her face that he doesnt want to be her friend---

it loses it's thematic cohesion because in the earlier seasons, the presence of love spurred the characters to be better, to do better. at the end of season 1, the show, in direct conversation with it's source material, has five find a solution to the problem of the end of the world that's emblematic of this theme: he and his siblings hold hands, and he asks them to trust him to find a way out. a different way out. in that concert hall in the comics, five hargreeves shoots his sister, point blank between the eyes. in netflix TUA, five hargreeves tells his siblings that they can save their brother, if they just find another way out.

but, like, whatever. i guess flawed people don't get to live with themselves, in the end. seems like the easy way out, if you ask me. love loses.

two things i believe must be avoided at all cost when talking about anime is misogyny and incest. It never ends well for anyone involved because no one is willing to take the l and admit that what they're watching is fucked. But i'm an asshole so i will.

One of my favourite pairings in sxf is Yor and Yuri (PLATONIC) but my least favourite pairing is also Yor and Yuri. There are two sides of it: the actual relationship vs how it is actually portrayed in the manga

**Now this is media analysis and social commentary. It's not about me or what i think. IT IS ANALYSIS. I hold this pairing very near and dear to me and i want better for them but you cant improve if you dont know what's wrong in the first place. this is about what's wrong. not me.**

The actual relationship: an interesting plot about two siblings who have to manage their shared trauma and learn how to have a healthy, non-codependent relationship with each other. It's complex, it can really add layers to Yor as a character and just overall elevate the story in a wonderful

Then there's how it's portrayed: Yor has a weird and clingy brother hehe who is obsessed with her because she's his sister.

There is a lot to be said about the portrayal of the relationship and the different social connotations it pulls from. And a lot of this has to do with the subtle individualist natalist ideology present throughout the series.

tldr: the story wants to portray yor and yuri's relationship as something perverse and unnatural in order to stigmatize sibling relationships in adulthood. also misogyny hehe

On one side: it's done for cheap laughs, it sexualizes Yor (that would require a whole other post) and it make Yor out to be some poor weak defenseless soul who can't even set boundaries with her own brother

On the other more in depth side: it is a rejection of the extended family model. it takes what could just be a close sibling relationship and morphs it into something so perverse and uncomfortable.

Individualism and the nuclear family have a joint impact on siblings. It encourages competition and separation. There's a reason they normally portray it as a girl and a boy. Within the nuclear family, children should not have a relationship with each other only with the corelating parent. It is expected that your children will grow up and branch off into their own personal families and stay apart.

And so media tends to stigmatize adults (especially of opposite relationships) have close bonds to their siblings. It is again seen as a flaw or almost childish. A well adjusted adult won't even speak to their siblings or touch them.

And then Christianity gets in the mix and purity culture and it just falls into chaos.

Yuri's affection for his sister is treated as a very childish attitude. His love for his sister is so strong it hinders his ability to even do his job right. Being around his sister makes him act stupid and juvenile.

His attachment to Yor is also implied to negatively impact her. She joins the Garden for his sake. He's blocking her from being with Loid in a genuine way. Their relationship blocks Yor from being a woman and so it's seen as growth when she pushes him away for Loid and Anya, adapting to her role as a mother and wife.

And that's not to say Yor cant have boundaries with him but Yuri is written in such a way that the only reasonable boundary is to cut him off. And while that can happen greater context makes the whole thing feel icky. You can give them a more nuanced relationship without getting rid of what makes their dynamic so interesting (ie the codependency) but the story isn't interest in that narrative.

And this is not exclusive to sxf it is a common problem in anime and other forms of media. When you have a culture that sees grows as separating yourself from your family, incest becomes very common as a way of compensating for it. If you're constantly being told that it is inherently sexual to want a relationship with someone... then shit like this comes about idk what to tell ya

you know, i think this has been a long time coming. im going to take this as a chance to go in depth about how my style works, why i do what i do and how i do it. do keep in mind that none of this is me saying "this is the objectively correct way of doing art" but rather just how my own process works, what I like to see in my own art.

that balance that you speak of comes from a commitment to underlying structures. what im going to call the stylization sandwich

i start with a clear, well defined solid structure, i add whatever wacky cartoony features i want on top of it (none the less strongly tied and guided by the underlying structure) and then i refine by adding as many more realistic, grounding details i want, although you can go too far with it so i gotta be careful or ill end up with those shitty "cartoon character IRL would look scary!" clickbait drawings.

(quick aside, this trend fucking sucks, its obvious the artist went out of their way to make the drawing creepy, this pretension that "actually the character would look scary irl" deliberatly misundertands the principles of stylization, its as creatively bankrupt as jokes about mario eating mushrooms)

getting back on topic, the point is that, as long as the underlying structures are solid you can build whatever you want on top of them and it will make sense

a key tool here is internalizing the way the proportions on the face work. and i say internalize because obviously i dont actually have the golden ratio memorized inside my head nor do i stop and measure and calculate all the proportions in the features. i just read a lot about drawing, i drew a lot, i tried to always keep a critical eye to what im drawing and see if it "feels" disproportionate. once you get an eye for it then you know how far you can push things before they complitely break

let me give you another example of what i feel is a botched execution of this.

if you look closely at the face on the left there are a lot of things that dont make sense. the corners of the eyebrows dip down into the eyes when usually the eyes are enveloped by the eyebrows, the way the beard grows around the nose is just not how facial hair is distributed, the mouth is too big, etc. on the left i used photoshop to reorganize the factions into something that makes a bit more sense to me

(another quick aside, the real big problem at the heart of the original drawing were not so much the proportions but the tangents, when different lines touch each other like this that is usually a big no no but that is a topic for another day)

also a lot of it is just me cheating. yeah i cheat. you ever heard how people say there is no innate talent and its all practisce and hard work. well, yeah, that is mostly true, but is also true that some people are born with inherent advantages. either taller or more predisposed to being thin or with better facial structures or better innate hand-eye coordination. i was born with an uncanny capacity to visualize stuff. i have whatever the opposite of aphantasia is. i can borderline hallucinate things if i want to. and that goes coupled with the visual intuitions i developed through practisce and training.

so first come the learned wisdom, and then comes the innate talent that helps me exploit that learned wisdom to its full potential

on top of that is corporeality, i try to draw in such a way that it conveys depth and weight to the things im drawing, certain kinds of stylizations dont care about that and choose instead to have their drawing look flat, a classic one is the UPA style

is a very fun style! very cute, very dynamic, very expressive in its simplicity. it became very popular in the 60's and 70's. personally i choose to go in a different direction. i draw in such a way that if one were to turn my drawings into 3d models not a lot would get lost in the process.

whereas other artists....

...not so much

but yeah, ultimatly it all goes back to underlying structure. any drawing can work

as long as you have a strong foundation underneath.

These are my headcannons for each character and what I think they would do in modern times.

Characters included: Arthur, Micah, Dutch, John, Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, Tilly, Sadie, Strauss, Charles, Susan, Bill, Lenny, Hosea, Sean, Molly, Javier, Swanson

Arthur Morgan: 

He works a blue-collar job. He would most likely be a ranch hand, but for some reason, I can also imagine him being a plumber or welder. In his free time, he does art and sells prints on Etsy. He is still an old-fashioned gentleman (In a good way), and all of the ladies he meets swoon for him, but he is a himbo and doesn't realize they are practically in love with him. They will give him the most obvious hints, but he will think the women are just being nice. 

Micah Bell:

He's the creepy uncle that you avoid at every family gathering. He hasn't had a job in like 15 years, and no one knows how he can still pay his bills. And he also always smells like lingering alcohol and cigarettes. He will lean too close to his nieces and say extremely concerning things everyone would choose to ignore. Im also getting the vibes that he went to prison for several years, but no one knows what for.

Dutch Van Der Linde:

He sells people scams or owns a pyramid scheme business. Similar to Scentsy products, he somehow convinces all of these people to buy his products to sell to other people, telling them they will get rich by selling these products, but, in reality, he's screwing them over and making most of the money himself. 

John Marston: 

If we are talking about early Red Dead 2 Marston, he still lives in his parent's basement and plays video games on his PC all day. He also watches Andrew Tate and would try to boss Abigail around and tell her he's an alpha male. (She'd slap him and tell him to get over himself) Late rdr2 and rdr1, he's grown out of that mindset and has become a working family man. Potentially also a welder, like I said for Arthur. But any high-paying physical job works.  

I feel like Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, and Tilly would all have a mom group they host every week to discuss their child's newest achievements. Their husbands think that is all they do at the meetings, but they also have in-depth conversations about women's suffrage and how the world caters to men. They think of ways to better the world and bring more women together to discuss these topics and bring light to issues regarding women. The girls would run a pretty popular Facebook group where they let other women express their opinions on those topics. (Arthur is a part of the Facebook group and likes every post he sees and comments shit like, “You're doing great, ladies! Keep up the good work! 😁🥰👍”) 

Sadie would probably occasionally attend these meetings (Although I dont see her having children, she would go for the cheap wine and to hang with her friends). Sadie would also go for the in-depth conversations and bring new thoughts to the table because she is a CEO or manager for a very successful company. She would share her experiences of what it's like to be on top of the men who work for her but still be looked down upon by them simply because of her gender. She would also probably share tips on that Facebook page on how to create a successful business without having to attend years of college and give tips for all stay-at-home moms who want to be more than just moms and wives. (She would also be the cool rich aunt)

Leopold Strauss: 

He would do the same thing. He gives loans to people who he knows won't be able to pay back the money, and then when the bill comes, he'd ruin their lives and probably end up breaking up families/ relationships and send people to jail for not paying back the money in time. 

Charles Smith:

I can see him being a park ranger or working in any conservation field. Potentially even a firefighter who deals with all of the forest fires that happen in places along the West Coast. He’d also be one to do something similar to what he did in the game, but he would work with the local native tribes against companies to try to win back their lands before it gets plowed over for an Amazon factory or something. 

Susan Grimshaw:

I can see her being the mean substitute teacher who yells at everyone to get to work, and then when someone does something slightly wrong, she would yell at the whole class and be like, “In all of my years of teaching, I have never seen a class behave this badly.” Either that or she would work at the front desk of the business Sadie runs. Miss Grimshaw would NOT play with anyone who would try to be rude towards her. 

Bill Williamson: 

Ehem…a police officer. I feel like this one is self-explanatory. But he would mostly sit in his car and do nothing his entire shift. Occasionally pulling someone over for speeding. If they are a white dude, he'd would let them off with just a warning. Poor Lenny would probably get the ticket. 

Lenny Summers: 

I feel like he would be the one to graduate high school early and go to college as soon as possible. I dont know exactly what he would choose for his degree, but I feel like it would be something involving politics. Maybe that wouldn't be his major, but he would take a government class. Or Potentially going into journaling. 

Hosea Matthews:

He's the retired grandpa who used to work in a factory where he made a surprising amount of money and was able to retire early. He spends most of his days walking up at 5 in the morning to watch the sunrise and read the morning paper. And he’ll spend every opportunity he gets to take his kids or grandkids fishing. And if you stay at his house overnight or for the weekend, he gives you a bowl of ice cream every night before bed and recounts every story he could think of that happened from the last time you saw him. (Some of them are surprisingly concerning, but he is one of those badass grandpas)

Sean Macguire:

Similar to John, Sean would spend most of his time gaming on his PC and arguing with children on COD or Fortnite. But he also works at a local bar as the bartender and won't hesitate to argue with the drunk assholes and would slap a bitch if needed. But he also embarrasses himself by flirting with women who will give him dirty looks or tell him that they are gay. (I feel like Karen would also work late-night shifts at the bar with him, but shes also taking online college classes because she wants to be a social worker) 

Molly O’Shea:

Instagram and TikTok influencer 100%, and lots of brands like to sponsor her and send her free stuff (Mostly because of Dutch’s business.) and she posts videos of her and Dutch, and everyone in the comments freaks out about how he is grooming her because of their age difference but she denies it all and says that they are actually in love.  But then she would post a video to that one sound, “My god this reminds me of when we were young.” And Molly be like 8, and Dutch be in his mid-to-late 20s. 

Javier Escuella: 

He’d be a musician. He would have started out in a shitty garage band with Sean and John or something, but then he’d realize he actually wants to be a serious musician while the other guys were just messing around. So he’d leave and make solo music that blows up, and he ends up going on tour, and making a lot of money and becoming hugely successful. 

Reverend Swanson:

The preacher you always see in the corner of the bar Sean works at. And if you went up to him and started talking to him, he’d tell you the most profound things. He would tell you about his life when he was younger and what happened that made him lose hope, but he would motivate you to never give up. He’d be that person you meet by chance for a few seconds that you would never forget. Hosea probably invites him to go fishing with him from time to time. But instead of fishing, Swanson stares at the water ripples in silence. Hosea would let him sit in silence and let Swanson enjoy the company and the time to think while being sober.

Ooh I love this question and I'm so sorry it took me a while to get to (ironically it's always the ones that get me intrigued that have the most reply lag!)

So, I think Rayyan's got to go with Hamilton for obvious reasons (young, scrappy and hungry and bent on taking their shot... also a little proud and hot headed! Though I think while they would relate to being an underdog, I think Rayyan would be more than aware of Hamilton's flaws e.g. unwillingness to sacrifice anything for their dreams -- the way Hamilton seems to be satisfied... and perhaps make them reflect about their own shortcomings.)

As for Tobin, again I think Eliza is a natural fit- her quiet steadfast loyalty, her warmth, her strength that endures even in the face of adversity (read: bullshit husband behavior), occasional spiciness (they dont take shit lying down, see that song: im writing myself out of the narrative). Of all of the ROs I can also most see Tobin living a long illustrious life and setting up an orphanage.

For Sam, I can't decide! I could see a cross between and Lafayette for just being FUN as heck and a GREAT friend and Angelica (for her hidden depths and selflessness in giving Hamilton up for her sister).

For G, I can't see them actually LIKING any of the characters (I like Hamilton but I actually don't think it does a great job with its women characters--you can fight me on that) and the men are intentionally very flawed. I do think they'd understanding Aaron Burr to a certain degree (though I think they wouldn't quite approve of his self-victimizing/self-pitying antics.) BUT I can see them agreeing with Burr's reasons for disliking Hamilton.) As a gaffe, I could definitely see G's fave being the King.

As a fellow King-starved OP fan it can be quite hard to find any content about him, especially as a Yandere, like- why, it works so well with him!! As for bedroom headcanons, I wrote this a while ago. Not exactly a straightforward answer to your question but still, I think you'll get the answer yourself. Also, I managed to fit some backstory about King😅 (most of it is actually his backstory) but I promise it explains his... yandareness... my writing style is different but I hope you'll like it. More ideas about this AU have come to me as I was working on this, so let me know if I should write part 2... Anyway, hope you enjoy this!

No matter where Alber goes, there will always be a certain darkness following him, the darkness that began surfacing inside of him ever since he became a research subject at Punk Hazard. The memories of warmth are lost to him, his family members, their faces, their love, traditions- everything from his past turned into shadowy figures that visit him in the dead of night, where he laid bare on his back, defenseless and unable to move an inch.

Alber experiences, no- has experienced those lonesome nights too many times after his escape, with Kaidou at his side, passed out drunk, there was only so much he could do under the night sky, as the sweat rolled down his chin, awake and stricken with fear, haunted by the nightmarish masks and white coats. The extreme heat lingered under his skin, with no scars to show the battles he survived on the Punk, though he could still feel the consequences of others' actions.

Each day his loyalty to Kaidou grows and so does his disdain for the people they have met on their journey. Days and months soon turned into years, years he has spent becoming stronger, years he spent with Kaidou, he has to catch up with him, perhaps matching up to his strength, but that is reaching too far, for Kaidou is strong, stronger then he'll ever be. Each second his world shrinks down to only the hero, who had saved him, his vision is blind to the islands they traveled to and conquered, blind to the beaten-up bodies they defeated. The colors of his environment blur together, lost to the intriguing laugh of his captain. He stares after the huge back, a back which he has to fill with his own will and strength, He is no longer Alber, for the boy was a shadow that no longer belonged to his body, weak, only confident in his endurance, a prey waiting for salvation. The worthless name stood on empty grounds, a new title was given to him.

He tries his best and this time, his best is enough for the man he idolizes (He has to thank his biology). He backs up his captain and engraves his name onto the burnt enemy's back, King. He takes pride in his new title, fit for Joyboy's first-mate.

He is no longer Alber. He is now the predator that the scientists have tried to research and avoid. He puts on a nobles mask, made of the finest leather. He puts on a new identity, on that day, on that land, a monster was born, a monster that happened to burry its emotions into the depths of the ocean.

King smiles.

Even after their crew gets big, annoying comments from Queen are met with aggressive glares, his facial features are hidden behind a dark mask that's acting as an intimidation factor, he holds the crew together purely for Kaidou, there is no respect tugging at his actions, sentiment hasn't had a place in him for some time now. What he first felt when he met Kaidou only brings so much to the table, so little emotion, aside from authority. The dark grows, and even if he is emitting an eternal fire, ebony covers his frames, cooling the heat and leaving him in the chilliness of The Beast's shadow. In utter darkness.

King kills, tears the bodies up, and burns them until not even the bones remain. All he does is stare down at the screaming faces, staring them down as they did to Alber. All he sees is the red light coming from the burning village. The smell of rot follows after him as he walks down the streets of an unnamed island.

In a small cottage at the end of the town, he feels a presence hiding from him. Away from the door which he bursts through. He doesn't waste his time as he strides into the person's house, in a place he can see their shaking silhouette. His steps are loud in his tiny bubble, with no fire or scream entering his field of hearing, he doesn't hear the door shut itself, but he can feel the breaths that left the person's nose, and can hear the vibrations caused by their shaky figure across the floor. In the dark of the room, he opens a cabinet to find scared!you.

And his field of vision, which was locked onto Kaidou all this time, shifts. It gets bigger as he stares into your scared eyes, glossed over with tears trickling down your face, your expression is drowned in fear as you look up at him. Unknown to the feelings running through him.

The feelings, the emotions he buried long ago now seemed to resurface, looking at your sweat-covered forehead, his eyes travel over your form, they remain frigid, even as his heart rate speeds up, even as the world around you becomes darker, even as his breathing becomes heavy.

Up until now, only Kaidou existed, for Kaidou. With Kaidou. Now the narrow view of him widens as you, a mare civilian join the everlasting space that exists inside of him. Your eyes so bright, filled with fear attract him. Your face shape, so tender and beautiful. You are the only color that exists in the dark, the only light in the endless tunnel.

The house is dark, but you emit light, you stick out even when he has stopped using Observation Haki. You make him feel warm in a way that he has never experienced before.

His heart is beating faster and faster the longer your eye contact lasts, his wind was knocked out of his lungs by the time he moved.

As he takes you by your arm, you stay quiet in fear of what he could do, quivering as he wraps his fingers fully around your arm. Your legs are frozen, acting like dead meat when he drags you out of the untouched house, they barely move when you realize the situation you got into.

He doesn't answer your questions of what he is doing or where he is taking you, his ears only picked up your voice, so angelic and clear in the sparks of fire that lit your garments, your skin and hair shining in beautiful reds and yellows, though he would enjoy seeing your natural colors. In a setting much cooler, and less tragic than this.

His world warps once again, he doesn't falter when Jack tosses a strange look his way as he gets closer to their ship.

He remains unaffected by your insults and weak attempts to set yourself free from his grasp. His natural strength is much greater than yours will ever be.

He ends up taking you to his room, barely remembering the path he took to get there and the faces he must have come across. He only lets go of you when the door is locked.

Lil Hal never said anything about what it meant to be the AI avatar of the God of Heart. After he and Equius had split, everyone had assumed he would go back to Dirk and serve as a sort of spirit companion, the hyper-perceptive Shades of the God of Heart. But to that, he had simply responded, “Nah.” He stayed firmly on Equius’s face, and Equius asked him no questions about it.

this fic is so in character. it captures some of my favorite things about this ship, like how obnoxious they are and the very specific ways they click and enable each other. it also has an absolutely fantastic sequel! its short and funny, and always the first rec i drop for this specific ship.

(the second rec i would drop is my own fic, Hold Me (Accountable). its a space au with mechanic!equius and bounty hunter!AR, and i maintain that its hilarious and a must read if you like this ship at all.)

ive said it before, and ill say it again. this is THE eridave fic. this is the one. if you only ever read one (and its not one of mine), it should be this one. i love how dave takes eridan seriously without enabling him, and how easily they both cut through each others bullshit. the handling of eridans character is DELICIOUS, and i literally think about his relationships with the other trolls in this fic all the time. i dont even know how many times ive read this fic but it goes so hard.

this is the quintessential meteor fic. its everything you could ever want in a meteorfic, and deals very heavily with karkat and dave unpacking toxic cultural ideas from their respective planets and coming to a new understanding of who they want to be together. its long, its slowburn, its everything, and the authors put SO much obvious effort and research into getting the voices just right, i still think about and admire it years and years later.

arc doesnt need any publicity from me, bigname that they are, but i gotta say of all of their fics this one is one i still come back to and reread from time to time all these years later. the au is really cool, and the drama is potent. karkat and dave have a very loaded and complicated, vaguely antagonistic relationship that takes time to get resolved, and you dont see that very often in davekat fics!

HOMESTUCK FIC. dont look at how many times ive read this dont worry about it. davespritekat is just better than davekat, okay? im sorry. everything is better w davesprite. if youre a davesprite fan i dont even have to say anything else you already know youve gotta read this, but for people who arent- dude, this fic. its such a poignant snapshot of the awkwardness of teenagerdom, especially as a very traumatized teen, and the interpersonal relationships between characters outside of the main two are just so delightful. the john&dave&davesprite dynamic is one i think about constantly, and me and my friend STILL have running jokes about davesprite co< kanaya, which is perhaps the greatest thing to ever be invented, and we have fully incorporated the phrase "sparkle princess alone time" into our day to day vocabulary. i LOVE the gossip chumps, they are everything to me. underrated friendship.
