no body, no crime
— m.s
chapter 1 . . . denial
in which. . . you and matt are private investigators, trying to figure out an unsolved murder from years ago.
warnings. . . mentions of murder, death, suicide.
written by @delilahsturniolo. do not copy, steal, or modify my works. do not take inspiration without asking permission first and please credit me if you are taking inspiration from my writing. happy reading! :)
(this is based off of the book series a good girls guide to murder!)
i think he did it but I just can't prove it.”
“no, no body, no crime.”
“but I ain't letting up until the day I die.”
the cursor on your computer moved quickly as you scrolled through different articles. you were sat in your office, your eyes glued to your laptop screen. you read the headline of the article you opened, it was published in 2015.
EMILY JONES, 17 year old girl brutally murdered by her boyfriend on June 17th, 2015.
you scoffed in disbelief as you read this.
everyone knows the story. emily was at a party with her boyfriend justin, they got into an argument and he shot her, a few moments later killing himself.
blah blah blah, you were tired of hearing that. you don’t think that’s what happened, you refused to believe it.
and why exactly? you didn’t know. but what you did know, is that you had every desire to find out what truly happened.
everyone in the detective agency thinks you’ve gone insane. there was no way you were so intrigued by a murder that happened years ago, you wouldn’t stop digging into it.
it was just all so weird, nothing added up. the police refused to investigate further, closing the case without explanation. it was suspicious, really suspicious…
and you were going to figure out the truth. what really happened to emily and justin that night?
you bit your lip, abruptly shutting your laptop and getting up. you walked out of your office and through the headquarters, entering the office of the only person you knew could help you.
detective matthew sturniolo. one of the best investigators in the company. well, to you not really. you thought he was just like any other detective. either that, or you refused to believe he was better than you. you sighed, knocking on his door.
“don’t come in!” he grumbled from the other end. you only rolled your eyes, entering his office. he turned his head to look at you from his desk.
“didn’t i just say don’t come in?” he narrowed his eyes at you. you just chuckled sarcastically. “oops.” you shrugged, taking a seat on the chair opposite of him.
“okay so what ever happened to asking—“ matt began to speak up, you cut him off though.
“i don’t need your sarcasm right now, i need help.” you interrupted, your voice laced with a pleading tone, which matt was a little taken aback by.
“you’re asking me for help? that’s a first.” matt crossed his arms, but leaning a little closer to hear your request.
you weren’t amused by his response. you took the file you were holding and placed it down in front of him. matt’s eyes furrowed in confusion, he looked up at you, his blue eyes meeting yours.
“what’s this?” he questions.
“open it and you’ll see.” you replied, gesturing to the file. matt huffed, opening the file. his eyes widened slightly as he looked at what was inside.
“y/n, really? the emily jones case? you still won’t let this shit go?” matt scolded you, his eyes analyzing the old police reports and statements inside the file. he closed the file and pushed it back toward you.
“if you’re asking me to feed into your crazy delusions and help you solve a case that’s already been solved years ago.” matt mocked you, making air quotation marks with his hands. however, you only shook your head.
“you don’t get it, i don’t think justin killed emily, it had to have been—“
“y/n, stop! everyone knows the story. justin killed emily, and he killed himself after. his DNA was on the gun. just let it go.” matt’s voice softened at his last few words.
you grabbed the file, opening it and taking out a few of the papers. you looked up at matt.
“don’t you find it weird? how the police did absolutely nothing? they didn’t even try to investigate further, they jumped to conclusions and were so quick to close the case. emily and justin were in a happy, healthy relationship. why would he just shoot her? you don’t find that a little odd? all of the suspects have different stories, something else happened that night. and, someone out there knows.” you explained to matt, his eyes locking with yours.
“matt, i don’t care if this happened years ago. people deserve to know the truth. it’s our job, we need to re open this case.” you pleaded.
matt took a long, deep breath. “alright.” he spoke casually, your eyed widened in surprise.
“wait, what?”
“alright. i’ll help you, but on one condition.” matt leaned in closer.
“just know that this doesn’t mean i don’t absolutely despise you anymore, you better not be wasting my fucking time with this shit, okay?” matt crossed his arms, you eagerly nodded.
“i promise, pinky promise.” you held out your pinky for matt to take, he chuckled lightly and connected his pinky with yours before letting go.
“alright then, let’s do this.”
“you’re on, sturniolo.”

Tuesday's Gone — Chapter 7
Russell Shaw x reader
Summary: When the police does little to no help to find your missing daughter, you are forced to contact Colter Shaw. What you don’t expect is how his investigation will reveal secrets about both your past and your daughter’s, in ways you never imagined.
Warnings: fluff, mentions of murdering someone (as a joke, kind of), so much Scooby-Doo and dog talk, GIRL DAD RUSSELL!! (he's a warning because – well, you'll see)
Y/N: This chapter... this chapter is literally my favorite from this series. Enjoy!🤍
Title’s based on Tuesday’s Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

━━━━━━━━━━✦✧✦━━━━━━━━━━━
“What the actual hell are you doing here?” she snapped, her words laced with enough venom to make anyone think twice about speaking.
Russell, clearly anticipating her fury, quickly raised his hands in surrender. “I know this sounds insane, and I know you probably hate my guts – fair enough, you’ve got every reason to – but Y/N sent me to grab some stuff for her and Emma.”
Your sister’s brows furrowed in confusion for many things. “Where the hell are they? What did you do–”
“They’re at the hospital in Springland” Russell cut in, holding up a hand. “They’re fine, okay? Just– let me pack some things for them. You can come with me, I’ll explain everything on the way” he said.
Her hands started to tremble, and she had to grip the doorframe to steady herself. “So, they’re okay? Emma’s okay?” she asked.
“Yeah. They’re good” Russell said, though his gaze was unreadable. “Please, let me–”
A flood of emotions hit Anna all at once. Relief, yes, but also an undercurrent of fear she couldn’t shake. Emma was okay. That’s all that mattered. Still, she didn’t understand why they would be in Springland. And…why hadn’t Y/N called her? And why the hell was he here picking up their stuff?
Anna stared at him, trying to read him. The whole situation was a mess. Y/N and Russell hadn’t exactly parted on the best terms, and now here he was, showing up at her door, looking exhausted and out of place. Why him?
Still, Anna couldn’t help the relief flooding through her. Y/N and Emma were safe. They had to be. But she couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was still off.
“Alright” she sighed and reluctantly let him in. She helped him pack some sweaters, a new pair of jeans, clean underwear and everything you’d need during a hospital stay. She also tossed clothes to Emma, her favorite plushie – a Scooby-Doo toy your parents gave her.
━━━━━━━━━━✦✧✦━━━━━━━━━━━
Exhausted didn’t even begin to cover it. The last few days had chewed you up, spat you out, and trampled over what was left. You weren’t just tired. You were hollowed out, running on fumes and sheer willpower. You had a feeling like you’d need a month's rest, minimum.
But at least Emma was safe. She was sleeping peacefully now, tucked into the hospital bed beside you. Physically, she was unharmed, Rourke and his men hadn’t laid a finger on her. Yet, you knew that wasn’t the whole story. Mentally, the trauma of it all would leave scars neither of you could see just yet. Your brave, sweet girl had been kidnapped. Stolen away. And the thought of what could have happened – no. Your mind can’t even go there.
Now here you were, sitting vigil beside her hospital bed. You’d been given your own bed in the room – thank heaven for small favors – but you couldn’t bring yourself to use it. Instead, you stayed planted by Emma’s side, staring at her tiny face as she slept. Her brows were furrowed even in rest, her lips pressed into a worried pout. Seeing her like that made your guilt weigh heavier.
You should have been her protector, her guardian angel, the one who kept the bad things away. And yet here you were, staring at the evidence of your failure. No four-year-old – or any child, for that matter – should have to go through this.
Your mind wouldn't quit, racing through the last few days like a bad movie on loop. First, the panic when you realized Emma was gone, the gut-wrenching moment it hit you, like a punch to the stomach. Then there was Rourke, that smug, twisted, mustache-framed smile of his, and the mess you’d thrown yourself into just to get her back. The helplessness you felt when you finally decided to call Colter. And, of course, there was Russell blowing back into your life like a hurricane, as if you hadn’t just spent years avoiding him.
They’d saved her. Saved both of you, really. And for all the hurt and confusion between you and Russell, you couldn’t deny that he had stepped up when it mattered most.
A soft knock on the door pulled you from your thoughts.
The door creaked open, and Anna’s familiar auburn hair peeked in first. Her eyes softened when they landed on you and Emma. She slipped inside, moving quietly not to wake Emma, and behind her came Russell, lugging two heavy sports bags.
Anna came straight to you, her arms wrapping around you tightly as soon as she reached your side. You returned the hug, letting her warmth chase away a fraction of the chill that had washed over your skin.
“God, I was so worried. So, so, so worried.” she whispered with a voice heavily trembling.
“I know, I– I’m so sorry” you murmured. “I was too. Did Russell tell you?”
She pulled back just enough to look at you. “Yeah, he briefed me” she said as her hands were still gripping your arms. “Don’t worry, I put him in his place” she said and Russell rolled his eyes at that. She really did, the whole car ride had been a rather tense experience.
You nodded, your eyes stinging with unshed tears. “Thank you for coming. You didn’t have t–”
“Stop” Anna cut you off, smoothing a hand over your hair like she used to when you were kids. “Of course, I did.”
Her eyes slid to Russell, and her mouth tightened into a thin line. She knew you two had so many things to talk about, but – for obvious reasons – she didn’t want to leave you with him. On the ride here, Russell tried to explain everything. And by everything, he meant everything. His line of work, the reason you were brought to your sister’s house that night four and a half years ago, and the real reason Emma was taken. To say Anna hadn’t taken it well was an understatement. But even in her anger, she couldn’t miss the regret in his voice, or the way he spoke about Emma – like she was the most precious thing in his world, even though he barely knew her. That, more than anything, made her hesitate.
Anna’s gaze darted to Russell, who was mindlessly unpacking one of the bags she’d hurriedly thrown together, then back to you.
With a reluctant sigh, she said, “I’ll leave you two to talk.” Her voice carried the weight of a thousand unspoken warnings, all of them aiming directly at Russell. “I brought the essentials,” she added, nodding toward the duffels by the door. “I’ll be outside. Need to call Mom and Dad anyway.”
“Thanks, Anna”
She gave you a small, tight smile and leaned over to press a gentle kiss to Emma’s forehead. Without another word, she stepped out of the room.
The door clicked shut, leaving you alone with Russell. The silence that followed wasn’t heavy, not this time.
Russell cleared his throat, abandoning the duffels mid-unpack, and shoved his hands deep into his pockets.
“Thank you” you said quietly, your voice softer than you’d expected.
“For what?” he asked quietly.
You didn’t have a specific answer, really. There was too much to thank him for.
Bringing you here to make sure you and Emma were safe, for one.
At the diner, he’d distracted Emma with soothing words and a little game – like connecting with her was the most natural thing in the world. That moment had surprised you, even warmed you.
And then, of course, there was the big thing. The thing that mattered most. He and his brother had risked their lives to save Emma. Your child. Your entire world.
Sure, he was partly the reason Emma had been in danger to begin with. But after everything, could you really hold that against him? Not more than you blamed yourself, anyway. He hadn’t even known about her, let alone that she could be used as a pawn to hurt him. That part? That was on you. You’d made the decision to keep quiet about your pregnancy, letting your own hurt and anger drown out better judgment.
Really, both of you had made mistakes. He hadn’t told you what his real job was. You hadn’t told him he was going to be a father. And now, here you were – two people who had made a mess, trying to pick up the pieces.
“How is she?” Russell asked, his gaze landing on Emma. His voice was steady, but you could hear the waves of guilt underneath like a howling ocean.
“She’s... okay” you said, letting out a breath that felt like it had been trapped in your chest for days. “Physically, at least. The rest? That’s going to take time.”
He nodded but his jaw worked like he was trying to grind his regret into dust. “She’ll get through this…She’s strong. Like her mom.”
You blinked at him, caught off guard by the unexpected warmth in his words. For a second, the fortress you’d built around yourself wavered.
Hell, who were you kidding? That thing had crumbled the second Emma was back in your arms.
“I don’t know about that” you admitted.
“I do” he said, stepping a little closer, careful. “I saw it. These last few days... you didn’t stop. You didn’t back down. Not even when I showed up and probably made everything ten times harder.”
Your chest tightened, and you glanced down at your hands. They were still trembling, like your body hadn’t gotten the memo that the worst was over.
“I was terrified, Russell. Every second, I thought I’d lost her. I thought I’d never see her again.”
“But you didn’t” he said, sitting beside you like he belonged there. After a beat of silence, he added, “Because you fought for her. And when it came down to it, we fought for her together.”
That last word hit you like a gentle nudge to the heart. Together. You lifted your eyes to meet his, and for the first time in longer than you cared to admit, you saw something there you hadn’t let yourself see before. Honesty. Regret. And maybe... hope?
“I don’t even know how to thank you” you said, your voice soft. “You and your brother. I don’t even know where to start. I can’t—”
“Don’t” he interrupted, shaking his head. “You don’t need to thank me. I just... I had to. For her. For you.”
Your throat tightened, and you had to blink a few times to keep the tears at bay. “You saved her, Russell. That means everything to me.”
He leaned forward, his hand hovering near yours, like he wasn’t sure if he was allowed to close the gap. “I’d do it again. A thousand times over.”
The silence between you stretched, but for once, it wasn’t awkward. It was thick with all the things neither of you were ready to say but couldn’t deny anymore.
Finally, you reached out and your fingers brushed his calloused hands. “Stay” you whispered. “We’ve got a lot to figure out, but... I’d like you to stay. At least until she wakes up.”
The corners of his lips tugged up slightly, almost like he wanted to smile but thought better of it.
“I can do that.”
━━━━━━━━━━✦✧✦━━━━━━━━━━━
You can’t remember when or how you drifted off, and you certainly can’t remember how you got into the bed beside Emma’s. For a moment, you were completely disoriented, like a GPS that lost signal. Your ears perked up at the sound of the TV, the familiar voice of Don Messick’s echoing through the room like an old friend. Was that Scooby-Doo you were hearing? Had you and Emma watched so much of it that now your brain was hallucinating talking dogs in your sleep?
You slowly peaked one eye open, then the other, dopiness sweeping through your system. You had to blink a couple before the blurry sight became clear in front of you.
There was Emma, sitting up on her bed, her eyes glued to the hospital TV in the corner, watching a rerun of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? She was making soft, nonsensical sounds that barely registered to you in your half-awake state.
And next to her, there was Russell, lying on his side with his head propped up on one arm, also mumbling. Emma’s head was nestled against his torso, her small body curled up in a cozy little ball next to his as she clutched the Scooby plushie Anna must have packed for her. They were both completely absorbed in the episode, their voices blending together in what could only be described as an animated commentary on the show.
You tried to make sense of what they were saying, but their words were a jumble to you – intelligible to them, maybe, but not to your sleep-fogged brain.
It didn’t take long for you to recognize the episode they were watching: Decoy for a Dognapper.
Of course. Emma was a Scooby fan. You and her know all the episodes by heart at this point, so much that Scooby-Doo was practically a second language in your house. And it seemed like Russell had caught on too, or at least, he’d been swept into the Scooby-verse by default. The two of them were so wrapped up in their conversation, they didn’t even notice you were awake.
“No way! She won’t? Why not? A dog is awesome” Russell said, his voice carrying the first full sentence your foggy mind could grasp.
“She says I’m too young” Emma replied, snuggling closer to his side as though the injustice of it all was just simply too much to bear.
“Too young? That’s ridiculous. What does that even mean?” Russell shot back, his tone scandalized for comedic effect. “Dogs don’t care how old you are. They care if you’ve got snacks and ear scratchin’ in store for ‘em.”
Emma giggled. “Mom doesn’t wanna pick up poop.”
Russell tilted his head thoughtfully. “Well, if I remember correctly, your mom was seriously considering getting a dog a few years ago.”
At that, you sat up with a groan. “Really, Russell?”
It was true, he and you both knew it. About five or so years ago, you’d gone on and on about adopting a dog – all the goddamn time. Russell had endured countless rants about breeds, shelters, and the pros and cons of pet ownership. Now, the smirk on his face told you he was thoroughly enjoying throwing it back in your face. Payback’s a bitch, huh?
Both of them turned to look at you. Emma with her wide-eyed, angelic innocence, and Russell with a grin that was downright infuriating in its smugness.
“Morning” he greeted with a widening grin. “We were just discussing the tragic lack of a dog in Emma’s life. Care to defend yourself?”
“Yeah, Mom!” Emma chimed in with an emboldened voice by her new ally. “Why can’t I have one?”
You rubbed your temples, though a smile tugged at your lips. “Because you’re too young, and I know exactly how that would end. I’d be the one walking it, feeding it, and cleaning up after it, dealing with everything.”
Russell raised a brow, looking way too amused. “Funny, you didn’t seem to mind the idea a couple of years ago.”
You shot him a pointed look. “Don’t make her think she has backup in this, Russ.”
“Too late” he said, leaning back with a grin. “Team Dog is officially in full force, yeah?”
Emma threw her hands in the air triumphantly, flashing you the biggest grin. “Team Dog!”
You groaned, but the warmth bubbling in your chest betrayed you. It wasn’t just the banter – it was seeing them like this, bonding over something silly, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Emma looked like a carefree kid again.
You narrowed your eyes at Russell, fully expecting another smug remark when he suddenly looked... hesitant. He cleared his throat, shifting his weight on the bed like a man about to drop a bombshell.
“What?” you asked, immediately suspicious.
“Well” he started, scratching the back of his neck, “don’t freak out, but... your parents are here. They got here a couple hours ago while you were out. Anna called them, I guess. She must’ve worked her magic because, well... let’s just say I was fully prepared to be murdered the second they walked in.”
Your hand flew to your forehead as you groaned, visions of your parents tearing into Russell flashing through your mind.
You didn’t tell them about him being here yet… and you guess it was already too late.
Your dad would be loud about it, your mom quieter but somehow more terrifying. You could only imagine the list of grievances they had ready for him. You just hoped they didn’t cause a scene in front of the whole hospital – and most importantly, in front of Emma.
“Wait” you narrowed your eyes. “They’re not trying to kill you? What did Anna even say to make that happen?”
“I think she went with the ‘he saved Emma’ card. Pretty sure your mom’s exact words were, ‘Well, I suppose I won’t bury him under the hydrangeas... yet.’”
You couldn’t help it, you snorted. It was just so her. “Sounds about right. And dad?”
Russell winced theatrically. “Your dad... definitely gave me the look. You know, the one that says, ‘I’m debating whether you’re worth the jail time.’ But he hasn’t thrown any punches yet, so I’ll count that as a win.”
Emma tilted her head, a frown pulling at her lips. “Why does Grandma and Grandpa wanna hurt Russell? He’s so nice!”
The room went so quiet you could hear the faint hum of the hospital machinery. Russell froze, looking at you for backup, but you were too busy giving him a look – the universal signal for you started this, buddy, now deal with it.
“Well, sweetheart” he said slowly, scratching his head. “They don’t actually want to hurt me. It’s just... a joke. You know, like when people say they’re gonna kill someone, but they don’t really mean it?”
Emma gave him a serious look, like she wasn’t entirely convinced. “But why? What did you do?”
You sighed, realizing there was no easy way out of this. “Sweetie” you began gently, “it’s kind of a long story. But Grandma and Grandpa are just... protective. They’re not mad at Russell anymore. Or at least, not much.”
Emma’s curious gaze ping-ponged between the two of you. “Why?”
“Okay” you said, sitting on the edge of Emma’s bed and taking a deep breath. “The thing is... Russell didn’t do anything bad. Not really. It’s just... well, a long time ago, before you were born, Russell and I used to–”
“Date…” Russell interjected, apparently deciding to rip the band-aid off.
Emma’s eyes widened. “Date? Like boyfriend and girlfriend?”
“Yes” you admitted, your cheeks warming. “Like boyfriend and girlfriend.”
She stared at the two of you, her little brows furrowing as she processed this new information. Then her face lit up with excitement. “Were you married?”
“Whoa, whoa, pump the brakes” you said, holding up your hands. “No, we were not married. We just... used to be together.”
Emma tilted her head again, her expression now puzzled. “Then why are Grandma and Grandpa angry at Russell?”
Russell chuckled nervously. “It’s not as bad as it sounds, kiddo. They’re just... protective of your mom.”
“Very protective” you muttered. You took a deep breath, preparing for the big reveal. “Sweetheart, here’s the thing. After Russell and I stopped being boyfriend and girlfriend… I found out that you were already growing in my belly.”
Emma’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, her mouth forming a perfect O at your carefully selected words. “You mean… like when babies are in tummies?”
You were trying to keep your tone light as you nodded. “Exactly like that.”
Emma tilted her head, her little brow furrowed as she worked it out in her mind. “So… that means… Russell’s my daddy?”
Russell smiled, his heart visibly melting. “Yeah.”
Emma blinked at him, then at you, then back at him, as though she was piecing together the most important puzzle of her life. After a moment of silence, her face broke into a huge grin. “YAY! I have a daddy!”
Emma scooted closer to Russell, wrapping her arms around his neck in an enthusiastic hug. “You’re my daddy now! That means you have to stay forever!”
Russell’s eyes glistened, and he hugged her back tightly. “I’ll be here as much as I can, I promise.”
Emma pulled back slightly, her face lighting up with another burst of excitement. She turned her wide, sparkling eyes up at Russell. “Can we get a dog now, Daddy?”
You groaned, burying your face in your hands. “Oh, for the love of – Emma!”
“What?” she said innocently, looking between you and Russell. “You said no before ‘cause it was just you! But now Daddy can help with the poop!”
Russell burst out laughing, clearly enjoying this too much. “She’s got a point, you know.”
You shot him a look that could have frozen water. “Don’t encourage her.”
“Team Dog!” Emma giggled and Russell ruffled her hair affectionately, somehow steering her to sit back down and continue their Scooby-Doo marathon.
Despite yourself, you took a deep breath, still trying to get your head around the unexpected turn of events.
This was... a lot.
But for some reason, it didn’t feel as overwhelming as it should. Sure, it had been a complete curveball to drop the whole Russell-is-your-dad bombshell, but Emma’s bright smile, the way she’d lit up at the news, somehow made it all feel like it could work.
As Emma giggled, you let out a sigh of relief. This wasn’t how you thought this conversation would go, but somehow, it was already starting to feel a little more like a family.
A very unusual family.
But a family nonetheless.
━━━━━━━━━━✦✧✦━━━━━━━━━━━
Next on Tuesday's Gone (Sneak Peek from Chapter 8):
Still, Russell had clearly decided that proximity was his job. He was there nearly every day, and on more than a few nights, too.
“Just in case” he’d say. You didn’t know, but he loved staying there when the both of you were sound asleep. During those times, he felt an indescribable peace.
And then there was his latest obsession: fixing everything. It started innocently enough – he noticed a cabinet door hanging loose and gave it a quick tune-up. Then he spotted the wobbly bathroom doorknob. Before long, the guy was like a one-man Home Depot commercial, patching up squeaks and quirks you hadn’t even realized were annoying you.
And at first, you didn’t even notice. But one day, you walked into the kitchen, and something felt... off. Not bad-off, just different. Quieter.
The cupboards didn’t bang shut anymore, the sticky drawer slid like butter, and that creaky floorboard by the living room? Silent. It was like Russell had decided that if he couldn’t fix all your problems, he’d settle for conquering your house.
And the worst part? It was kind of working.
━━━━━━━━━━✦✧✦━━━━━━━━━━━
I might have giggled all the way while writing it, or maybe I didn’t. But hey, Emma has a dad!

with you in a distorted fairy tale ༻¨*:·.
'dark if ' chapter 2 - elbert greetia
<- Chapter 1
This is a fan translation and may not be 100% accurate. I do not own anything. Cybird reserves the right of ownership for all in-game content.
author's note: Throughout this story, Kate refers to Elbert with feminine pronouns 彼女, and Elbert's title is the Queen 女王. Therefore, in sentences where Elbert is the main subject, sometimes you will see Elbert's pronouns listed as she/her. (i.e, "Elbert removed her hands"). This may be a bit confusing to read through, but I wanted to keep the translation as accurate and close to the original material as possible.
Mirror Alfons: I've come to see the Princes gathered here--... Ah, no well, to see what was going on, but...
Mirror Alfons: My dear Elbert and Miss Kate, why on earth are you two so exhausted?
Mirror Alfons: Not to mention, I don't even see any Princes around.
Kate: Ah, those who came here all posed some type of problem, so we've asked each and every one of them to leave.
Some of them actually went after Queen Elbert, others were after the gold and silver treasures of this castle, and still others were only interested in picking up the maids.
To top it all off, the moment I was alone with a suitor, he tried to attack me.... the list just goes on and on.
Queen Elbert: All the men we called here today have been rejected.
Mirror Alfons: My goodness, what an utter failure. Well, at least Miss Kate seems somewhat alright.
Kate: Whenever there was a problem, Queen Elbert would step in.
Queen Elbert: I didn't think a single one of those men would make you more beautiful.....
Kate: Exactly! Yes, thank you Queen Elbert...
If I thanked him, Elbert would smile at me.
To be honest, I don't remember any of the faces of the men I met today. Elbert's smile was just so dazzling... I was sure I'd never forget it.....
Mirror Alfons: Oh my... you two are staring at each other quite passionately. You two must have become quite close, no?
Mirror Alfons: Why, when I picked you up, you had all your hair standing on their ends, much like a stray cat.
Kate: Well... when you took me in, I mistakenly thought that Queen Elbert was a scary person.
I was wary of Elbert because there was a possibility that he would harm me, just like the true fairy tale story.
Kate: But, after spending more time with her, it became very apparent that Queen Elbert is a nice and kind person.
Kate: How could I not fall in love.... with someone like Elbert?
Queen Elbert: .....thank you, Kate.
Kate: It would be amazing if Elbert was actually a prince...
Since Lady Elbert was a Queen, that would be impossible. And if someone as wonderful as she were to appear before me, I would choose him as my prince with no hesitation.
I mumbled these thoughts to myself....
Queen Elbert: Thank you Kate.... to be admired in such a way, by you.... makes me happy.
Queen Elbert: And... the way you are trying so earnestly to find your prince, makes you seem radiant....
Queen Elbert: I feel like I'm getting closer to finding the most beautiful thing in the world that I desire.
I was once again captivated by a happy Elbert's exquisite smile.
(...aahhh no! I have to find my prince! I don't have any time to be attracted to the Queen!)
I was desperate to calm my pounding heart, which was beating wildly on its own.
Kate: Ahem, well.. In any case, I'll try my best to find my prince again starting tomorrow.
--time skip--
The search for the Prince lasted several days, only to end with fruitless results.
Queen Elbert: Let's take a break from searching for princes today.
While finishing breakfast, Elbert spoke up.
Kate: Yeah, we should... we won't find anyone at all if it keeps up at this rate.
(If this is the turn out so far, then no doubt what is missing from this story is the Prince.)
(To straighten out the story, I think it would be best to find someone to just fill in as the "missing Prince".)
(The Prince huh.....)
I unconsciously looked over at Elbert, who was having breakfast at the opposite side of the table.
(No, noo... She is a Queen!! She can't be a prince!!!!....)
Queen Elbert: ....Kate? You look gloomy.... is something wrong?
Kate: No not at all! It's just troubling, not being able to find the Prince.
(It was such a shame that Elbert couldn't become the Prince... and more so that I can't say that out loud.)
I put on a silly smile to cover up my thoughts.
After studying my face for some time, Elbert softly spoke.
Queen Elbert: Since we are not searching for princes today... I would be delighted if you join me in browsing for new clothes for you. If you'd like...
--after the tailor brings a catalogue--
Kate: Waaaoow!
After breakfast, Elbert showed me to a room filled with dresses and jewelry.
Tailor: Thank you very much for your order this time.
Tailor: We have a ride range of items today, from trendy articles to designs that have been loved for ages.
Tailor: Please let us know if you need help in trying on any of the items.
Kate: Heheh... Lady Elbert, anything here would look good on you!
Queen Elbert: Ah, no, not now... Today, I am choosing your new dress.
Kate: M- mine?!
Queen Elbert: A new dress will surely help you find your prince.
Queen Elbert: Plus, I thought this would be a nice change of pace for you...
(Oh... I think Elbert is trying to cheer me up because I'm feeling down since I can't find a prince.)
(.....what an extremely kinda person...)
Kate: Aah.. thank you so very much, Elbert!!
Kate: Since this is a rare opportunity, I'll take you up on your offer!
My heart is filled with Elbert's consideration for me, and just thinking about it makes me feel better.
Then, after looking at some dresses with Elbert, I decided to buy one that I particularly liked.
Queen Elbert: ....just one dress?
Kate: Yes, and it's plenty! Thank you for everything.
To treat me, Snow White, so very well.... Queen Elbert is certainly different from the Queen of the original story.
(Maybe this... is a direct consequence of the distorted fairy tale?)
As long as I could remain by the kind Elbert's side, maybe I would be alright staying trapped here...
I then shook my head to clear away the selfish thoughts that crossed my mind.
Kate: By the way, why don't you pick out a new dress too, Lady Elbert?
Kate: Or next time, please allow me to find one for you!
Queen Elbert: Oh, no I-......
Elbert lowered her eyes in confusion, but I think she was just being reserved.
I looked around the room at all the dresses lined up. Then-
Kate: Look, what about this one, Elbert? I think this would look great on you.
Tailor: Ah- pardon me for intruding but... Miss.. that clothing is for men..
Tailor: Even though the Queen is indeed the type of person that could look good in anything, this is... a bit...
Kate: Eh?! *looks at the clothing she is holding* A-aaahh yes... you are very right.... please excuse what I said!
(Truly, the outfit I chose is clearly a man's outfit from every angle.....) [1]
[1] Here, signs are showing of Alfons's power weakening and Kate getting confused at what is true/what she is seeing. She is outwardly agreeing that Elbert is a woman, but her instincts sense and feel Elbie to be a man.
(Why exactly did I think this would suit Elbert so well??)
(Even though Elbert is clearly a "woman".)
Queen Elbert: Kate. I appreciate your thoughts, but I like my current clothes, so I don't think... I need anything new....
Kate: Oh is that so..
Queen Elbert: I'm so sorry.. even though you took the time to choose something...
Kate: Oh no! Sorry for being so intrusive...
In the end, Elbert only bought a dress for me, and nothing for herself.
--after dinner--
When returning to my room after eating dinner, Alfons called out to me.
Mirror Alfons: I heard that, apparently, you were trying to buy some men's clothes for Elbert.
Kate: Oh.. at that time, I thought those men's clothes would look good on her.
Kate: ..... That's strange, isn't it? Lady Elbert is a beautiful woman......
Mirror Alfons: Yes, that is strange indeed. "Lady Elbert is a beautiful woman."
As he agreed with my sentiment, Alfons removed his gloves and stroked the back of my neck.
Kate: ....? What.. what was that, suddenly....
Mirror Alfons: You started speaking strangely, so strangely that I thought you had a fever.... alas, your temperature was normal.
Kate: Normally, you don't check the temperature for a fever at the nape of the neck....
Although I was confused by Alfons's behavior, ultimately it was Elbert that occupied all the space in my mind.
Kate: ...Alfons, why is it that Elbert collects beautiful things?
Mirror Alfons: That's an easy question to answer, though, well.. I'm not sure if I should answer it.
Kate: Hmm, as I thought.....
Mirror Alfons: *unsettled* 'As you thought'...?
Kate: When Elbert says she likes collecting beautiful things, she sounds desperate and... painful...
Kate: It didn't seem like she was just collecting things just because she liked to.
It almost felt like she was forcing herself into a corner and exacting punishment by having to find something beautiful.
Kate: So, I'm glad to know there are at least some circumstances as to why it's difficult to say so..
Kate: I will be sure not to ask Elbert herself why she collects them...
Mirror Alfons: And so, you decided to ask me beforehand.
Kate: Yes. I was sure even attempting to bring it up would hurt Elbert's feelings.
Mirror Alfons: .......
Mirror Alfons: ..........maybe you can heal El's wounds.
Kate: ...what?
Mirror Alfons: ..I've changed my mind. Let me show you.. the truth.
Saying that, Alfons handed me a key.
--scene switch--
I went to the location Alfons told me about and used the key to open the door.
(What hides in the basement of this castle...?)
Alfons told me to use the key to get into this room, but nothing more.
(I guess one can tell just by looking at it but... it's freezing cold down here..)
Rubbing my numb hands together, I had walked a few steps into the stone room when I spotted something.
(Is that... a coffin?)
In the center of the room was a gorgeous coffin made of glass.
(In the original story, the one in the glass coffin is supposed to be Snow White.... me...)
I was almost frightened at the scene, but I managed to endure it and take another step, peering into the coffin.
(Who is inside this...?)
The coffin bed was covered in flowers and a woman was lying on top of it.
(An extremely beautiful woman...)
And I was sure she was dead, for she wasn't moving at all.
It was so beautiful that I lost all sense of being scared.
(But why is there a body in Queen Elbert's castle...?)
Queen Elbert: ...Who is there?
Kate: ..!!!
Queen Elbert: Kate...? Why? Why are you here..??
Seeing me standing in front of the coffin, Queen Elbert's face stiffened.
Kate: Th-.. well that's... I-.. Alfons gave me this key, and then I...
Queen Elbert: Al, huh...
Kate: Elbert... who is this woman?

Chapter 3
Madeline gave three solid knocks on the door of the third floor dorm room. She had taken Melody out shopping a couple of hours ago, and both of them got new outfits for their girls night out. But it wouldn’t do to have Mel fall asleep on the dance floor, so she let her best friend spend a few hours at her dorm room to get some shut eye in her room.
Maddie knocked a couple more times on the door, and afterwards, heard Luz’s voice come through. “Yeah! Just a sec!”
When the door finally opened, Luz was standing on the other side of it. “Hey, I-” Madeline began, but once Luz was in full view, she stopped. All the toned woman had on was a white tank top and a pair of women’s boxers. Maddie’s eyes wandered to Luz’s arm that was propped up against the wall, then back to her face, which she had just slicked her hair back from since it was soaked.
“Sorry about the wait.” Luz said, “You caught me just as I was getting out of the shower.” She looked behind her, pointing her thumb over her shoulder, then looked back towards Madeline. “Mel isn’t here.”
Maddie took a second to come back to earth, then nodded, “Yeah, I know. I came here to talk to you.”
Luz broke eye contact, releasing a large breath and stepping to the side while motioning with her arm for Madeline to come inside. “I’m assuming this is about last night?”
Madeline soon accepted the invitation, stepping in. “Yeah- Well, kinda.”
Luz furrowed her brow, confused, and let the door shut behind her friend. “Kinda?” Then leaned back against the wall.
“Yeah, I wanted to talk to you about your guys’ living arrangements.” She crossed her arms and hardened her expression. Distracted only a bit by the steam just off in the far end of the hallway. She wasn’t kidding; she did just get out of the shower. “You guys can’t live together anymore.”
Upon hearing what this was really about, Luz bowed her head and put her hands behind her back. “It’s eating her up inside.” Maddie continued, “and even if you wait until she’s out to invite your hookups over, it doesn’t stop it from keeping some wounds open.”
“I know.” Luz replied with an even tone.
Madeline looked genuinely surprised at first, uncrossing her arms. “You-” She waited for a beat, the small sense of shock making her interrupt herself. “You know?” Then, that surprise turned into irritation. “Then why haven’t you done anything about it?”
“I have.”
Maddie stared perturbedly, waiting for the taller woman to clarify her statement. Luz looked back up at her and shrugged in preparation of saying something extremely difficult. Something she didn’t really want to happen, but was going to anyway. “I’m gonna be crashing with Darrel for a couple months, or until Mel is,” She pondered how to put it, “better, I guess? I dunno.”
Luz brought her hand up, rubbing the top of her head.
Maddie’s eyes, for a split second, blinked towards the Hispanic woman’s adonis muscles that were partially revealed in the process, then refocused to her face again. “I wouldn’t know how to explain it. But I guess it’s just until she can get over me. She smiled sheepishly and let out a single, guilty chuckle. “I know I don’t exactly make that easy.”
Madeline could tell, as well. She could tell that Luz was genuinely trying to do the right thing, and that maybe she was usually trying to do the right thing and it just fell flat sometimes. Maybe Melody was right. Perhaps she didn’t always give the woman a fair shake.
“Oh, well,” Maddie began, not really knowing how to completely clear the air through the pent up awkwardness that had built over the last year from her and her best friend’s breakup. “Thanks, Luz. Really.” Maddie said, not really knowing how to completely clear the air through the pent up awkwardness that had built over the last year from her and her best friend’s breakup.
Luz nodded subtly. “Yeah, no problem.” Then she looked down again. Silent. As if waiting for Madeline to begin making her exit already.
Which the animal science major did. She began heading for the door, but in the process, had to actually walk past the half-naked woman to do so. When she did, she stopped and faced her. “Hey Luz.” She paused for a second, “You’re, um,” It felt strange being so real with the flirtatious woman. “You’re a good person.”
Luz lifted her head, her lips barely parted and her eyes looking as if they were searching for meaning, focusing on Madeline’s lips as Maddie continued to speak. “And I know I haven’t been as good of a friend as I could’ve been through yours and Mel’s breakup.” Luz’s eyes moved up to Maddie’s. “And I’m sorry about that.”
There was a beat that went by, and then a genuine, appreciative smile appeared on Luz’s lips. “I get it.” She sighed, stood up straight, then shrugged again. “You went up to bat for your best friend. I respect that, Mads.” Her eyes darted down, then up again. “It’s one of the things I like about you. But I, uh, appreciate it.” She spoke softly, “I do.”
For a moment, Luz had to look away. She wasn’t all too good with showing real, honest emotions. Not with Madeline, at least. And so, because of that, a more flirtatious demeanor took hold. As a sort of wall she could put up to hide herself. “But y’know, I’m no saint in all this either. So if you ever need me to say sorry, I’ve heard I’m very good with my mouth.”
Madeline scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Yeah, thanks, but no thanks.” She thought for a moment, then leaned in a bit. “But if you really wanna say sorry, you can slip me Darrel’s number. Mel and I are going out tonight and he seems like he’d be more my speed, if you know what I mean.”
Luz’s eyes faltered, for only a split second. For a single moment while she huffed out a breath. But it was just not-so-subtle enough to be noticeable. “Yeah, not gonna happen.”
Maddie smiled, leaning forward a little more to look up at Luz. “What was that?”
Luz released a tense snicker, “What was what?”
“That.” Madeline said again, leaning in a bit closer. “Oh my god. Luz Marcellus, are you-” she let out an amused exhale, “Are you jealous?” Her poking and prodding was, of course, meant in a playful manner.
The toned woman raised her eyebrows. “Me? Jealous?” She scoffed. “No.”
“I think you are.”
“Mads, watch yourself.” Luz playfully warned, taking a step closer.
“Luz, I’ve never seen that look on you before.” Maddie took a single step back, still smirking. “Oh, don’t worry though, I won’t be part of whatever body count contest you guys are having. I’ll make it abundantly clear to him going into it that things are to stay between the-”
Before Madeline knew what was happening, she was between Luz and the wall, with the butch woman’s forearm placed above her head. The wet strands of hair hung down in front of her face, barely letting her brown eyes show through and burrow their way into Maddie’s own. The shorter woman’s gaze went wide and she tried to look anywhere that wasn’t up or forward.
But that wasn’t exactly working.
Was that Luz she was smelling? What kind of cologne was that? She wore cologne? It was nice. That, mixed with the smell of the shampoo, was almost intoxicating in a way.
Luz flipped her hair to the side, giving that trademark charming smile with that stupid way she dragged her teeth along her bottom lip for half a second. It all made Madeline’s heart speed up a beat or two. But why? She didn’t like women like that. Maybe she didn’t view Luz as a woman?
Gee, that’s a shitty rationalization to jump to. Madeline thought the words, keeping them locked in her head.
“There’s a lot of sides of me you haven’t seen yet, Mads. But we can change that.” Her voice was deeper than usual, Maddie could swear to it. “Y’know, if you ever become interested.” Madeline felt humiliated that this was actually getting to her. She knew logically that this was all just to get back at her for poking fun at Luz in the first place. So, yeah, kinda should’ve seen something like this coming.
But Madeline thought it was like how Luz and Darrel joke with each other. How Darrel will say something to her that’s provocative, and she’ll tell him to eat a dick, but in a ‘bros being bros’ kinda way.
She put a hand on the top of Luz’s chest to gently push against her, adding a trilled laugh to her first word. “Yeah, okay. That would require me to find you attractive, cowgirl.”
But then, Luz’s expression just dropped. Like it would
In immediate response, so did Maddie’s.
“Wow, um,” Luz backed away to put space between them, releasing a single, hurt breath. “Okay…”
Madeline just froze for a good couple of seconds.
What did she say? It was the truth. She wasn’t attracted to Luz, because she wasn’t attracted to women, and Luz knew that. Those two things were obviously going to line up. Maybe she thought Maddie was calling her unattractive, in a general sense? Anyone with eyes could see that wasn’t true, though. Not only that, Luz has always been super proud of her body. So why was right now such a blow for her and not something she could just laugh off?
Maddie reached her hand out. “Luz, I didn’t-”
“No it’s- it’s cool.” Luz took another step back and kept looking to the side, clearing her throat and pulling her shirt down to cover her torso just a bit better. “I get it.” She nodded once, “I do.”
“Okay…” Madeline said, just kind of leaving it at that. She didn’t know what else to say. She didn’t know what was going on. “Did you, um,” She narrowed her gaze a bit, “ Did you wanna-” Then, she pointed her thumb towards the door, “I mean, tonight, with-”
“No, I can’t.” Luz cut her off. “I have work. Patrolling.”
“Right…”
Another awkward pause.
Maddie took a couple steps back towards the door, the apologetic sensation never leaving her expression. “Well, I’m gonna head out. Gotta make sure Mel wakes up in time for our girls' night.”
Luckily, it seemed like Luz had started to compose herself. She took a deep breath and returned to more of a neutral demeanor. “Yeah, well, you guys have fun. Take a shot or two for me.”
Madeline seemed relieved when her friend at least started acting normal again. She giggled, “Luz, we always take shots for you. You don’t drink.”
Luz shot her a friendly wink, “I know. Have fun tonight.”
“Thanks, we will!” With those final words, Madeline opened the door behind her and left the dorm room. All the way to the elevator, she couldn’t help but think about how weird that entire interaction ended up being. Had things changed that much with Luz in the past year? What hell even happened back there?
Maddie tried shaking it off as she got onto the elevator.
One thing was for sure; she would certainly be drinking enough to try and forget whatever the fuck that was.
10pm - Shivers Bar & Club Singles Night
A glass hit the bar underneath, and Madeline let out a high pitched, ‘Woooo!’ as the first shot of alcohol cleared her esophagus. She was wearing a red silken dress with an open back that had strings that tie around the back of her neck. It flowed down to just above her knees.
Melody laughed and put a hand on her shoulder. “Maddie! Easy, we just got here!”
She turned to Melody and put an arm around her shoulder. “Hey! ‘Easy’ is for people who get to do this more than once every couple of months!” She took the second shot from the bar and held it out to the crowd as she turned both of them to face it. “We came out here to have a good time, and dammit, that’s exactly what we’re gonna do. So do me a favor and down this shit!”
Madeline held the shot to Melody’s lips and tilted it back, to which Melody took the hint and opened her mouth, tilting her head back to let the drink flow down her throat. Maddie let out yet another cheer and put the now empty shot glass on the bar next to the other one.
Mel put the back of her wrist up to her lips, holding in a laugh at her over-ecstatic best friend. “Now, let’s get you and the sweet, sweet ass out on the dance floor, girl!” They both laughed and Maddie grabbed Melody’s wrist, holding it in the air and swaying her hips while she danced out onto the floor to begin their night.
11:30pm - Shivers Bar & Club Singles Night…
Madeline leaned on the bar, downing her third shot of the night, and she was starting to feel it coming on. She let out a breath, and a laugh afterwards, exhausted but having the time of her life.
“Hey, you here alone?!”
She heard a deep voice yell out over the music, and before even looking at the guy, smiled and retorted. “It’s singles night! What do you think?!” It was more of a playful tone than a snarky one. As she saw the guy for the first time, he looked pretty damn cute. Not the most built, but certainly not scrawny.
“To actually answer your question,” she continued, “I came here with my friend. She’s, um,” Madeline looked around. Where was Mel? It was difficult to see over and past the crowd, but as a few more people cleared the way at the end of the song, she saw her. And a huge grin came across her face.
Melody was on the other end of the bar, pressed against it, making out with a woman a few inches taller than her with raven black, shoulder length hair. “She’s busy.” Maddie said, turning back to the guy.
He looked down at her and smiled, leaning on the bar. “You and your friend come to singles nights together often?”
“Oh, it’s not what you think.” The music began to blare again as the next song started. It was difficult to convey the joking tone she wanted while talking over it, but she did her best. “She’s my manager!”
“Oh yeah?!” The guy played along.
Madeline nodded, “For sure! There’s some really raunchy stuff of me online! Girl’s gotta make a living, right?!”
The guys face formed an over exaggerated expression of understanding. “Oh yeah, for sure, for sure!” Then broke out into a grin again.
Maddie looked him up and down. Yeah, he passed the vibe check.
But before it could continue, she heard a familiar voice next to her. “Hey, Maddie!”
She looked over to see Melody standing there, holding hands with the woman she was just making out with. “Hey, Mel!” There was most certainly a teasing lilt to the word that made her best friend roll her eyes and blush, smiling like she was caught with her hand caught where it wasn’t supposed to be, and where it most likely was just a couple minutes ago.
“I’m gonna head back! I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?!”
“Yeah, yeah, sure! Go on girl! Have fun!” Once again, a lilting, teasing cadance took over the last word, and Madeline watched as her friend walked out with her new date.
She looked back to the guy she was talking with, “So, where were we?”
12:30am - Shivers Bar & Club Singles Night…
Body’s were rubbing against each other. The music was pounding. More drinks were being ordered. More drinks were being consumed. At this point, it was safe to say that Madeline was drunk. Five shots in for a person that doesn’t regularly go out drinking was more than enough.
She leaned back against the bar, making out with the guy she was dancing with. Turns out his name was Garrett, which she classily found out a few seconds before she started kissing him. They smiled into the kiss and he reached down, putting his hands on her waist and pulling her closer to him. “You feel fucking amazing, Maddie.”
“Mmm… Same do… you…” Well, it seemed like she was more drunk than she thought. But she’s been drunk before and that felt different than this.
Her hand reached up to hold her forehead, “Woah-” And when she looked back at Garrett, everything seemed like it was spinning. His head wouldn’t stay in one place. Afterimages filled her vision when things passed her view. She was starting to see double.
She heard Garrett’s voice, as if it was far off in the distance. Distorted. Like it was slowed down, but going faster somehow. “Maddie? You good?”
“No, I…” She reached into her pocket, her hand shakily pulling out her phone. “T-trouble… Gotta c-call… Some-” Her fingers tried their best to work on the digital keypad.
5… 8… 9…
But it was no use. Before she could do anything else, she dropped her phone and stumbled into the counter. The device clattered to the ground and Garrett reached out to grab her. “Woah, Maddie!” He steadied her on her feet as her head fell motionless backwards.
Barely conscious, she heard another voice. A familiar voice.
“Yo, what’s going on? Maddie? Maddie, you good?” Her head was held forward by someone different. It was Darrel. Darrel was here.
He looked at Garrett while keeping her head upright. “What the fuck happened?!”
“I don’t know, man! I think she was drugged or something.” Garrett seemed worried. Both for Maddie’s safety, and because he didn’t want anyone thinking he did it.
“Shit!”
“We’ve been on the dancefloor for like, the past hour. Only coming back here and there to grab a quick drink- I swear, she’s been fine up until this point!”
Darrel looked around on the bar for a second. He picked up a glass with his free hand and put it forcefully back down on the counter. “Are you fucking kidding me?! Yo! Bartender! No fucking drink covers on this shit; are you for real right now?! It’s a fuckin’ college town dipshit!” He pointed to the ground, “Hey yo, get her phone. Put it in her purse.”
“Darrel…” Madeline slurred the name, pouting, and a couple of silent cries came from her throat.
“I gotchu, babygirl, don’t worry. I gotchu.” He picked Maddie up and turned to Garrett. “Yo, Garrett! Call the cops, tell’em someone’s been drugged at Shivers. Give’em my address and-” He thought about it for a second, looked down at her, then shook his head. “Actually, nah, fuck that. Way too sus. I’m takin’ her to her room! Tell’em she’ll be in the junior and senior dorm!”
“Yeah, for sure man, I’m on it.” Garrett took out his phone and immediately started calling the police.
And that was the last thing Madeline remembered…
3:07am - Grayson Library Parking Lot
Luz sat in her patrol car with it turned on so that the heat was going. When it’s in the forties outside, saving on gas money during your break suddenly becomes a bit less important than staying warm. To help with that, she also had a coffee she picked up at a twenty-four hour diner down the street, too.
Her phone dinged, and as she took another sip and looked down at it, she smirked and shook her head. The message appeared at the top of her screen, from one of her hookups this past year on campus, asking if she was DTF tonight. She went to move her thumb to click on the message, but she just hovered over it.
She was conflicted. Ever since that talk with Maddie earlier, she couldn’t even let her mind wander anywhere else. It was like there was a blockade there, and it was something she couldn’t move past for some reason. Both the jealousy, and the stinging remark that Maddie didn’t find her attractive. For some reason, hearing that out loud from her friend, just stung. It was a constant parasite eating away at her brain.
Luz shook her head and let the message on her phone stay unread. She clicked the device's screen off and looked back up through the windshield. “What’s wrong with me?”
But she narrowed her gaze, squinting to try and see something in the distance. “The hell?” Out in the middle of the green just outside the library, she could barely see the figure of someone. From this distance, in the dark, it just looked like a shadow. It seemed like they were kneeling on the ground, maybe?
What were they doing out here?
Luz got out of her car and slammed the door shut. The sound echoed through the night air like the clap of thunder. Upon hearing it, the figure quickly got up and immediately began running off across the green, towards the main strip.
“Hey!” Luz yelled out, trying to make out anything she could about the figure. Though it was harder to tell anything about it, she could, at the very least, see that they were wearing a baseball cap and were about, five-foot-four from the looks of it. Maybe five-foot-seven or five-foot-eight?
She started jogging towards the figure, though it was obvious with their headstart that she wasn’t going to catch them. When the security officer got ten or so yards away from where they were originally kneeling down, she watched them round the corner and leave her line of sight.
Luz shakes her head, then looks down a bit and sees another figure. Her eyes squint, and she instinctively reaches for her walkie. “This is campus security badge two-five-six out on the green outside of Grayson Library. I got a possible two-forty, requesting local law enforcement.”
The radio immediately came back with a voice. “Heard, two-five-six. Contacting law enforcement and backup will be there shortly.”
She began pulling out her flashlight. “Yo, you alright?” When she clicked it on and the circular light came to life, it was pointed down at the ground at her feet. Instinctively, Luz looked down.
She squinted, trying to make out what the wind had just blown against her pants.
It was hair. Auburn hair.
Her breath sped up and she slowly pointed her flashlight up and along the ground. Her voice was almost caught in her throat, and she began walking fast towards the unmoving figure. “Hey, I said ‘are you alright’!”
As Luz got closer, her worst fears became a reality.
With chunks of hair cut off, and an excess amount of blood from the multiple stab wounds to her chest…
It was Melody.
“Oh my god-!” Luz rushed over, pulling her walkie up to her mouth, the tears already starting to well up in a panic. “I need EMT’s! EMT’s- SEND EMT’s!” Her voice broke as she shouted into the device, then threw it on the ground.
She practically slid down next to her as she collapsed to her knees, reaching out and turning Melody’s face towards her to look into her eyes. “Mel! Mel, look at me!”
She did; but there was nothing there. Her eyes were as cold as her skin.
Luz put her hands on the wounds, pressing down hard to try and stop the bleeding. “Don’t do this! C’mon, don’t do this!” She pressed down again, looking at the blood seeping through her fingers and overtop her hands, then back to Melody’s face. Tears began to run down her cheeks. “Fuck- Mel, c’mon!”
As she cried, she leaned down to put her face just inches away from her friend’s as she whispered to her. The vacant stare that gazed back surely burned into her mind forever. “C’mon, what do you want, huh? W-what do you want me to do? Y-you want me to say that I love you? I- I do, okay? I love you. I love you so fucking much, Mel, just please don’t fucking do this to me- Please, God don’t do this…”
Her words were strained, said in the middle of sobs as her hands came up to caress Melody’s face. The blood smeared on her extremely pale, lifeless skin as Luz’s thumb gently stroked her cheek.
Luz looked out all around her and screamed as loud as she could. “HELP! SOMEONE HELP!”
She looked back to the body of what was once her friend. “God, no,” Luz began to cry uncontrollably. “No, no, please no…” She reached down and cradled Melody in her arms, bringing her up to hold her close. To embrace her one last time. “Please don’t go…” The blood began to soak into her uniform, but Luz didn’t care. She rocked back and forth, holding the corpse of one of the only people on this earth she could ever truly say she had loved.
The only sounds left in the dead of night were the whining of incoming sirens, and the sobs of a broken woman…

i’m afraid i’m going to need a scene about jungkook teasing oc about the dolphin book because that moment in the last chapter was just too cute
ok :p //
“you know... you could try reading the instructions for once," you grumble, snatching the recipe book from where jungkook had haphazardly tossed it aside.
he has messed up for nth time tonight and your hangry attitude is not having it.
you're done.
your boyfriend is annoying and your food is about to be wasted because jungkook thinks going by instict and kissing you every 5 minutes is how dinner will prepare itself.
“it’s not that hard, jungkook.” you add, tone more stern.
“instructions are for people without instincts,” he replies, leaning lazily against the counter while watching you dice onions.
you pause, glaring at him.
“you don’t have ‘instincts.’ last time you winged it, we ended up eating instant ramen for dinner.”
“and it was delicious,” he shoots back, grin widening when you roll your eyes. “besides, you choose really confusing recipes. why can't we ever just bake a pizza and have sex for dessert?”
“sex for dessert?”
"i could lick whipped cream off your—"
"shut up."
“wow. harsh,” he says, clutching his chest in mock offense. “i'm simply suggesting dessert... shit, ___. i’m starting to feel unappreciated in this relationship.”
“maybe you should start actually helping, then,” you mutter, turning back to your chopping. but the corners of your mouth twitch as he snickers behind you.
“you know,” he starts casually, his voice taking on a mischievous lilt, “for someone who lectures me about not following instructions, you sure don’t apply that same energy to your dolphin book.”
you freeze mid-chop, your brain stuttering. “my what?”
“everything you need to know about dolphins from a to z,” he says, his tone so smug you can practically hear the smirk on his face. “real page-turner, huh?”
you whirl around, cheeks blazing.
“how do you know about that?!”
“doesn't matter, mrs. save the dolphins.” he crosses his arms, leaning against the counter with the smuggest expression you’ve ever seen. "do you think we should go to mexico or something and swim with them?”
your jaw drops.
“no, that's terrifying... and you're the worst.”
“no,” he corrects, pointing at himself. “i’m the best. which is why I’ll forgive you for hiding your secret dolphin knowledge.”
“oh my god,” you groan, shoving past him to grab the frying pan. “i can’t believe this. you’re literally insufferable.”
“and yet,” he hums, trailing after you as you stomp across the kitchen, “you keep me around. i must have some redeeming qualities, huh?”
“none,” you reply sharply, though your voice cracks under your rising embarrassment. you slap the pan on the stove a little harder than necessary, your ears burning.
he doesn’t miss a beat, following a step behind as you start cooking.
“so this is how it feels to be led by a dolphin expert,” he muses. then, as you turn to grab some seasoning, he lets out a low, playful woof right behind you.
you whip around, eyes wide. “did you just—?”
“just a loyal boyfriend following his master,” he teases, grinning like he’s won the lottery. “woof.”
“i am so tired of you,” you say, jabbing a finger at his chest. “you’re such a—”
“what? nerd?” he interrupts, his eyes dancing with amusement. “takes one to date one.”
“ugh!” you spin back toward the stove, your shoulders stiff with frustration, but you can’t hide the smile tugging at the corners of your lips.
behind you, jungkook laughs, his voice warm, and the sound settles something in your chest despite yourself.
you hate him.

Seeing Blind (you’re too good to be all mine)
Chapter 6, 4.3k , mature, read under cut or on ao3
(Part 1) (part 2) (part 3) (part 4) (part 5)
A thank you to the ever wonderful @divine-misfortune for being my cowriter
“Swiss, I,” Dew opened his mouth with the partial intent of coming clean but Swiss fixed him with those big brown eyes and his heart cracked. “He seems to get all weak in the knees when you’re bold,” he offered instead and resisted the urge to cringe at his own cowardice with a feigned nonchalance, tossing the crust of his sandwich to a sparrow, “so why don’t you go be bold and tell him how you feel before he’s gone for good. Win him back or get yourself an answer then and there. Get yourself out of this limbo.”
Rain doesn’t leave the house for several days after his talk with Dew. Can’t bring himself to - doesn’t want to face any of them, let alone Swiss.
Hardly manages to leave his room. The dark circles under his eyes are not lost on any of them.
His dad reluctantly knocks on the door periodically through the days, gruff voice gone surprisingly gentle asking if he needs anything. He brings him dinner when Rain is absent from the table. His mother sweeps into his room and opens the drawn curtains in the mornings despite the fact she knows Rain will close them again not long after, always asking hopefully if he’d like to help her in town or baking or something else benign. It’s hard to see her smile falter when he makes up an excuse about needing to read a few chapters of some book or some essay to stay on track with his classes for when he returns to school.
School came more into focus as he wallowed, it was something he could blindly throw himself into. The upcoming semester was steadily approaching and coming to terms with leaving his home, and everyone, behind again was no easy task. Maybe getting away from the mess he’d made was best for him, and everyone else. He was never meant for farm life anyways - his mom always joked that he was born to be a city boy all his life, there seemed to be some truth to that now.
And as his sudden and abrupt absence dragged on, Swiss only grew more confused. It was almost like the few days Rain had avoided him after their first kiss but worse. The farmer’s son had plucked out his heart and ran off with it for real this time, and he wasn’t coming back.
Swiss had gotten a small glimpse of him one afternoon as he was washing the tractor, elbow deep in soapy water with half his shirt soaked. He hadn’t taken his lunch. He hadn’t been taking them for a while, too worried to eat and too guilty to continue the routine he and Rain had fallen into; splitting two lunches between them in the shade of the grain silo, Rain bringing him a cold drink daily and a sliver of whatever his mother might’ve baked on Fridays. The silo was out on the far side of the front yard, far enough from the house Swiss feared he might just miss catching a glimpse of him.
Judging by the slow creak of the back screen door two things were evident; Dew hadn’t oiled the hinges like he’d been asked to last week, and Rain had been counting on Swiss’ absence.
He looked worse for wear. Uncomfortable having to simply exist, but most of all, Rain looked tired. Dead on his feet. Like he’d simultaneously just woken up and skipped sleeping the last few nights. Practically dragged himself across the gravel driveway to the barn where he fought with the heavy wood doors.
Swiss wasn’t sure if Rain was pointedly avoiding looking at him or simply hadn’t noticed the farmhand peeking at him from beside the tire but either way he couldn’t take his eyes off Rain if he tried. Even as he continued to wipe the body down, mindlessly scrubbing the sponge over the same scuffed bit of paint. Seeing Rain hurt but looking away might’ve just killed him.
But Rain did eventually grow wise to the hopelessly yearning gaze cast in his direction. He froze like a deer in headlight, the color draining from his face - Swiss had never seen him paled like that, that soft pink flush had never left his cheeks when they were together. Neither of them spoke. Swiss didn’t call his name, as badly as he wanted to, and Rain didn’t say his in turn. No apology, no explanation, not even offering Swiss rejection. A range of emotions flitted across his face instead, the most prominent being grief and guilt, before he was retreating back to the cage he’d made for himself in that house. Going where Swiss could not follow.
The entire situation plays on repeat in Swiss’ mind. Over and over. He should have just gotten over his nerves, the stupid gentleman complex he had, and fucked him. It wasn’t like he didn’t want Rain, he did. He really did, bad. After all the weeks of constant teasing only to be pushed away and outright denied it only made sense that Rain was avoiding him now - in Rain’s mind, Swiss was either leading him on and playing with his innocent emotions or he didn’t want him at all.
It begins to eat away at him. Wearing guilt like a uniform as he drags himself through the overly long and unfulfilling days. He swallows it down for as long as he can until he simply can’t. Mountain unknowingly puts the crack in the dam, his concern hitting right at the weakest spot. It spills out of him before he even comprehends the words. For the first time, out loud, Swiss admits to his feelings. He’s more honest to him than he’d been ever since he and Rain first kissed. Confesses to just how much time they’ve spent together, and reluctantly tells them about the night that hadn’t left his mind.
”And I kissed him, and it just…We got carried away,” Swiss fidgets with a loose thread on his flannel, one of the buttons barely hanging on. Only when he glances down to the offending button does he realize it’s the dark green flannel he’d draped around Rain’s shoulders to keep him warm once upon a time. It felt like months ago. “Went pretty far and I knew he wanted to take it further but I stopped him.”
”You…Stopped him?” Dew paused, having been fiddling with the tab of his empty coke can as Swiss practically word-vomited on them. ”Why?”
”I don’t really know.” He laughed nervously, an involuntary sound that came out hollow. “He looked like a kicked puppy when I told him I didn’t think we were ready, that I didn’t think he was ready. Fucking hell, I’m pretty sure it sounded like I was handling him with kid gloves or some shit. Probably sounded like I didn’t want him.”
Mountain frowned. ‘The worried mom look’ as they all called it. He glanced sideways at Dew who’d popped the tab off his can finally, and Dew’s stomach sank. He knew exactly what Mountain was thinking - that he’d been right about Rain from the beginning. Nothing but a priss who barely tolerated the lot of them. Someone they should have protected Swiss from more proactively. It made his skin start to itch. Dew needed Mountain to stop looking at him. He needed Swiss to stop looking absolutely devastated.
He’d assumed the worst of Rain and his intentions. That Rain was using Swiss but how could he be using him if they’d never gotten that far? It’s not like he knew at the time - at least, that’s how Dew attempts to justify everything he said but it really doesn’t help. Fuck. Would Swiss understand if he told him? No, no Swiss wouldn’t forgive him for ruining something that affected him this deeply.
Jaw aching, he could feel his anxiety driven heartbeat in his clenched teeth. His molars might just crack, or he would. Something had to give.
Dew stared into his lap and shifted the food packed in his lunchbox like he was looking for something in particular despite the way his appetite had curled up and died. Swiss and Mountain continued to discuss, trying to find the root of the problem unknowingly sat uncharacteristically quiet three feet away. Every heartbroken word from Swiss was another nail in the coffin Dew dug for himself. The path to hell was always paved with good intention.
“You did what you thought was best, maybe you weren’t ready either.” Mountain flicked Swiss’ hand away from his flannel before he could actually tear the button off. “If he’s truly that upset then he needs to talk to you about it, not lock himself away. He will realize what he’s lost at some point.”
A chip fell out of the bag Dew was holding before he finally sighed and threw the rest to the birds. Salt and grease wouldn’t help him swallow this any easier, truth be told, everything was just helping to turn his stomach further. The truth sat like a lump in his throat, begging to be released. He just couldn’t decide if it was better to come forward and confess or pray Rain never divulged the things he’d said to him. Neither would play out well for him, he was more than aware. Dew was also aware of the fact Mountain wouldn’t save him from the consequences of these particular actions, might even turn a blind eye when Swiss inevitably jumps him with every ounce of bottled up hurt behind his closed fist.
He was trying to be a good friend now, he had been trying to be a good friend when he confronted Rain. Seems like he’s not very good at it. Swiss deserved better friends than him and that fact goes down just about as smooth as cough syrup. Dew couldn’t stand that sad expression much longer, and as much as it might just kill him to have Swiss learn the truth, maybe he could at least get Rain back in the process. Sugar to help Swiss swallow the bitter medicine of Dew’s indiscretion.
“But I don’t want to overwhelm him. You should have seen how he turned tail when he saw me the other day, I don’t want to chase him away.” Swiss sighed and rubbed both hands over his face.
Dew handed his now crustless, semi flattened sandwich to Mountain instead of tossing it to the birds. Chicken salad was bad for birds. ‘Borderline cannibalism’ Mountain had stressed to him in the middle of a lecture when he was caught throwing pieces of a different sandwich to some ducks one time. He’d had his fair share of guilt for the day.
“You really like him that much?”
“So much, Dew…More than I’ve ever liked anyone or anything.”
A pit opened in Dew’s stomach but he fought to grin. The smile Dew typically fixed him with before doing something mischievous.
“Go tell him that then.”
With a shallow breath Swiss nodded and hopped to his feet, Mountain following behind as he made his way to the barn leaving Dew to sit in contemplation.
Bold.
One of two things would come of this; Rain slips away and he walks away looking like a fool with wounded pride or Rain returns his affections. What did he have to lose? Either way, Rain would leave for college by the end of the summer and he couldn’t let him go without being truly honest with him, Rain deserved that much.
Fate was on his side, the stars had aligned. Wednesday was the one day of the week where he could count on Rain’s father being gone, restock day. He and the other farmhands dreaded it, usually left with aching backs and knees by the end of it after having to carry in countless bags of feed before they were allowed to clock off for the day. A routine they all knew well. Mountain went with. Big, strong, known favorite employee Mountain. It gave him a few hours to work with.
Like always, Mountain waved goodbye from the passenger side window and Swiss watched the truck disappear down the winding driveway with held breath. He counted to ten before turning and mumbling something to Dew about covering his ass. If the work wasn’t done by the time they got back they’d all get chewed out but Swiss needed to do this.
The house sat quiet aside from the buzz of the television as Rain sits on the edge of the couch folding towels, one of the few chores his parents could talk him into without much pushback as it didn’t involve stepping foot outside. The knock on the door came suddenly and urgently, and Rain nearly sent his neat stack of linen to the floor when he flinched. He fumbled over himself to get to his feet and hurry to the door. More often than not, if someone came to the door after his father left something was wrong, and fearing an emergency Rain swung the door open without so much as checking who was out there.
His heart swelled and sunk all at once. Gripping the doorknob Rain was frozen. He can’t retreat. Can’t bring himself to close the door in Swiss’ face even if he wanted to. Only with him standing there in front of him did Rain truly realize just how much he missed him. He fucking missed Swiss. It had been the loneliest he’d felt in years without him around. His eyes stung, the threat of tears barely kept at bay by a few rapid blinks.
”Hey…” Swiss started and Rain seemed to jolt out of his stupor, he put his hand on the door to stop him from closing it before he’d even made any move to do so. He knew it was a desperate, pushy thing to do. “Can I come in?”
“M-My dad will be back soon,” Rain tried to keep his voice level and his face neutral but the words came out whispered and wobbled. He swallowed thickly.
“No he won’t, he and Mountain just left. Please, I need to talk to you.” His gaze flicked away, catching Phantom and Cirrus both blatantly staring the two of them down from across the yard. He quickly tacked on a softer, “privately.”
Hesitantly, Rain stepped to the side and allowed Swiss in. Swiss’ shoulders sagged with a breath of relief as he crossed the threshold. Standing in his kitchen felt familiar but wrong at the same time, like he didn’t belong there. Rain quietly shut the door and retreated further into the kitchen to sit at the table, the plates from breakfast still laid out. He sits stiffly, hands folded in his lap. The tears collecting in his lashes betray his neutrality.
Neither of them spoke for a stretch of time that lasted far too long, both too stubborn and guilt ridden to break the palpable silence until it was too heavy to bear a moment longer.
“I’m sorry Rain, it wasn’t you I just was so wrapped up in-“
”I’m sorry, I never meant to make it feel like I thought poorly of you-“
The two blurted out in unison and ultimately trailed off into another widening gap between them. Swiss’ frown settled deeper and Rain bit his lower lip in some vain attempt to stop himself from crying but the tears spilled despite his efforts. All the lonely nights with only a growing numbness as his company had done well enough to bottle up everything, but with Swiss there in front of him, he couldn’t keep it in anymore.
“What…?” Swiss’ brow furrowed, moving from the chair across the table from him to the one directly beside him when he began to cry. “Rain, what are you talking about?” He pulled his hands from his lap, squeezing them gently.
“I’m not like that, I never thought I was, was,” he hiccuped and dropped his head to stare at how Swiss held him instead of meeting his eyes “I never thought I was better than any of you, I’m sorry. Fuck. I’m so sorry, Swiss. Never wanted you to think that, or that this was some little fling. This wasn’t just a play for attention or anything, I swear.”
Every word felt like another knife in his ribs, urging him to curl in on himself like a sobbing child. He just couldn’t stop the words from pouring out, a proverbial waterfall of admission. He could see just how bad it must have looked - Swiss didn’t fuck him so he turns his nose up at him and the other farmhands after the princess didn’t get what he wanted. It could have only served to cement the idea of all of this being for his own gain and entertainment.
“Tadpole, what are you talking about?”
”Dew, he, he-“ Another hitch in his voice, “talked to me…Told me to stop messing around with you, and that you all thought I was uptight and snobby and that I was using you.” His head snapped up and he’s suddenly holding Swiss that much tighter, like he might pull away. “Swiss, I’m not. I promise I’m not, would never. I love you more than the attention or sex or-“ Rain was beyond the point of babbling, probably didn’t even realize he’d dropped the L-word.
If not for the sentence it was set in, his heart might’ve stuttered in his chest, but something hot and sharp began creeping up his throat instead. Anger and betrayal tasted sour in his mouth. Barely tempered.
“Dew told you what?”
The silence was beyond damning. More than enough confirmation. If not for how tight Rain held him or the tears pouring freely down his face he might have gotten up and stalked out to the fields to wring the truth from his skinny little neck. But Rain had been out of reach for so long, he wouldn’t dream of leaving him. Dew was what pulled them apart, he wouldn’t let it happen again. Rain was his priority.
“I- oh darling. I never thought that about you. Not even for a second. Figured you were sticking around for more than just my good looks when you willingly subjected yourself to sleeping in hay on more than one occasion.”
Rain gave a small laugh, grabbing a napkin from the center of the table to wipe his eyes. It was something at least.
“Dew is just, er…He’s suspicious of people he doesn’t know, and over protective of the ones he does. Doesn’t know you like I do though, none of them do. Couldn’t hope to understand how I feel about you.” The anger becomes easier to shove down with every soft stroke of his thumb over the back of Rain’s hands.
He has Rain again. He has Rain and there was nothing wrong between them anymore and he has Rain.
The tension leaves both of their postures, the quiet was easier to sit in without so much pressing down on them.
“Swiss…” Rain started somewhat shyly. “How do you feel about me?
It’s a question that should have a simple answer, ‘I love you’, but it didn’t quite answer it fully. Conceptually, yes. He loved Rain. But it didn’t feel like enough. Words didn’t feel like enough. Swiss had meant it, he’d never liked anyone the way he liked Rain.
“Askin’ the hard hitting questions there, Rainy.” He chuckled, meeting Rain’s expectant gaze. If only he could just lay his heart out there for Rain to see, it’d be easier. “…Do you remember the night we laid in the bed of my truck instead of the loft?”
“When we watched the stars?”
”Yeah, yeah. Remember how absolutely fascinated you were by them? Just in awe of how the constellations told stories, how you could tell the time, the season, the direction, all just by looking at them?”
”Of course I do, it was beautiful out there.”
“You couldn’t stop staring at them all night, watched you struggle not to fall asleep so you could savor them a little bit longer. Wonderstruck by each and every little dot in the sky, really seeing them for the first time.”
He tipped his head, “what does this have to do with how you feel about me?”
“Well, raindrop,” Swiss brought one of his hands up and kissed his knuckles. “That’s how you make me feel…Hopelessly in awe of you.”
His mouth opened but all he managed was a weak laugh while shaking his head, looking anywhere but Swiss’ face. Bashful. Beautiful. “You don’t mean that.”
Swiss turned him back towards him, cheek heating up underneath his palm. There it was. The only way he could possibly describe the way Swiss looked at him - nothing short of adoration.
“Barely looked at the sky that night, I couldn’t stop looking at you. Every night, every time I had you in my arms all I wanted was to look at you.” He chuckled nervously. Nobody warned him of how nerve wracking this would be. The movies made it look so easy. “You drive me fucking crazy Rainy. Got me feeling like a lovestruck fool when you’re around and a lost puppy when you’re not.”
Rain was a new shade of red. Nothing like the pinks he’d seen before, even when he had his mouth latched onto his throat and Rain was singing like a canary.
“C’mon…Say something.” His confidence wavered without any sort of response. “Tell me I’m not stupid.” It felt like he was begging for confirmation he wasn’t positively delusional. ”Tell me you feel something for me.”
”I do,” he rested his hand over Swiss’, leaning his cheek into his palm. “I never knew I could like someone so much.”
Air rushed back into his lungs as Swiss remembered to breathe, that he even knew he could breathe to begin with. A real lovestruck fucking fool.
“Fuck - you just, you make me feel alive. Swiss, all I’ve done during every break since I started college is come home and read. Stay in my room and study, wait to be told what to do, do the bare minimum to help out around the farm, and wait. I wait to go back to my dorm where I sit and I study and I wait to be told what I need to do before I drive hours home to do it all over again.” His face had almost become a grimace, recounting the routine he’d repeated for years out loud, but it softened out again when he refocused on Swiss. “Don’t think I’ve had fun like this in…I don’t know, like, forever. Haven’t felt hopeful about anything in even longer.”
Somehow, he managed to sit still despite the giddy excitement blooming and bursting inside him. He was pretty sure he could pass out. For the last two summers Swiss had been making heart eyes at Rain from afar, hoping for a chance he never thought would come. Before this summer, they’d had their small interactions. Not a whole lot of anything but it was something - a little banter here, a snide comment from either of them there, brief run ins that he’d been certain Rain brushed off and forgotten directly after parting. Swiss had loved every second of it, it always got his heart beating a little faster, he just didn’t know how deep his love for Rain really ran at the time.
“You were my first kiss y’know…” Rain admitted quietly like it was some shameful secret but the nervous, near bumbling reaction had given Rain’s innocence away within the first three seconds. Swiss decided not to tell him that, focusing instead on the little rush of pride that came with it.
“Yeah..? Was I memorable?” His grin is dopey, he knows it is. Can’t help it.
Flushing all the way to the tips of his ears, Rain made a little annoyed sound that turned into a laugh as he shoved Swiss’ hands away. He got up and Swiss did the same. His hands don’t stay away long, not when Swiss had every reason to possibly touch him.
“Maybe. Could have been, dunno. It’s been a while.”
”Need me to jog your memory then, darling?”
“Mm…Might have to.”
Whatever impossibly heavy and strange fog had drifted over them was finally dissipating. Waved away. He felt lighter, they felt lighter. More at ease, more so with each other. Rain hands don’t even shake as they slide up Swiss’s chest to wrap his arms around his neck, only letting out a surprised little ‘oh!’ as Swiss drew him to his chest. Eager to be close to him. He’d quietly yearned to feel him again from the second he’d slipped out of bed that morning, not entirely in a physical sense, aching for the pure intimacy of it.
Kissing him felt like dreaming. Slow, sweet, like they had all the time in the world even though the clock was steadily ticking on from its place above the stove. It didn’t matter. Their lips had always seemed to fit together so easily. Even easier was the way Rain’s fingers started to sneak into his locs. A silent plea for more, to be closer, to never let him go.
But they had to come up for air sometime. Swiss was the one to break apart, allowing him to catch Rain with his eyes still closed, bliss woven in his face. He wanted to keep him like that forever. His eyes flutter open and his delicate expression turns into the cutest pout that manages to tug on his heartstrings ever so slightly.
“Heeey…” He whined, rocking up onto his toes to steal another. All he gets is a peck.
”Gotta go before your dad gets back, lover boy.” Swiss grinned down at him, tapping him on the nose as he slipped from his arms. “You still remember where you can find me, princess?”
For that, Swiss earned a little shove against his chest and a proper fitting laugh. He couldn’t stop himself from smiling if he tried.

CHAPTER 1: 3.3k
Following Armageddon’s failure, Aziraphale and Crowley perform the bodyswap, prepared to be captured by Heaven and Hell. But that’s ineffability for you. * Prewritten; will update every three days until completion. Come back on December 29th to binge!
A silly romp of Aziraphale and Crowley poorly playacting as each other, with fluff and feels because I can't help myself. Queerplatonic, aroace, lots of banter and humor! Book vibes and characterization with season one canon.
#gotta be honest i really love this fic#it has been SO fun to write and I really hope folks will enjoy it#i also hope the bodyswap part wont be too confusing as you try to visualize it while reading cuz I struggled sometimes lol#anyway! off i go to do some final edits on the last few chapters! wahoo!#good omens#good omens fanfic#good omens fanfiction#asexual#aromantic#queer#queerplatonic#bonus fun fact for ya if you're still reading these tags for some reason#i didn't actually intend for them to be aro in this one#but they gradually became just SO aro as I wrote that by the end#my intention to do a whole love confession first kiss thing didn't feel right at all#which isn't to say that they don't love each other or the ending isn't soft as Somewhere#cuz they do. and it is.#but yeah accidental aromanticism! we love to see it

was kind of hoping g5 would explain where tf the rest of the pony population is, honestly. its hard to believe that every unicorn/pegasi/earth pony was compressed down into their respective towns/cities.
mym had a rough time juggling it's story so im not surprised this was never fleshed out more but--if they had the chance in a future series--i would love to see that. getting more into it below the cut (loosing it i fear):
back when we only had the movie i had a theory that there had been a major conflict that ultimately ended in the pony populations plummeting; and that ultimately fueling twilights decision to seal away their magic in the crystals--which would lead to the races separating after the fact. eventually, by some form or fashion, the crystals were separated (maybe stolen....?) between bridlewood, maretime bay, and zephyr heights.
however opaline being introduced in mym tripped up this theory to the point where it's pretty obvious that's not what happened--or at least not exactly. discord alludes to something too terrible to describe in the comics so there's that? (also "mane-ificent 7"??? lmfao)
not even mentioning how this page utterly destroys the "magic removal resulting in pony exodus" theory; because it seems unified-equestria was able to exist for a while longer after the crystals were created:
perhaps opaline instigated more conflict in the following years (after the mane 6 have died off...?) which ultimately resulted in magic failing the ponies. if not her, then im sure the hard work the of our g4 girlies slowly faded because the equestria became too comfortable, and perhaps stopped fighting for unity. (another point i remember appreciating when we only had the movie to go off of:)
if so, that then brings up the question of HOW DID THE CRYSTAL GET SPLIT BETWEEN THE RACES BEFORE THE MOVIE???
did argyle find the earth pony piece during a history excursion or was it passed down to him??? how did alphabittle get the respective unicorn piece??? the pegasus crystal was literally a part of queen haven's crown--was there a point where all pony types swiped the crystals following the failing of unity to PREVENT the other races from using it against them???
but then???? we had the whole thing with elder flower and her fuckass story about a bat and web and whatever tf that implies that the time passed between g4 and g5 is way shorter than i anticipated??? also "opaline was here the whole time guys we swear. dont you remember our good friend opaline??? the opaline who was CHILDHOOD FRIENDS with LUNA and CELESTIA in SKYROS???"
so maybe the equestria we've seen so far (as of chapter 6) is just a pocket of the current pony population, but if so, does that also imply that the other settlements are ALSO hostile towards other pony types? because wouldn't the unity crystals have been unrestricting magic to some extent (depending on how many ponies/creatures were collectively getting along)? the simplest answer is that the writers failed to think ahead but i wanna give them the chance to reveal a little more because there are still MAJOR things we dont understand.
#i guess as of the secrets of starlight we have confirmation of more ponies existing outside of our usual setting#via the auroracorns#so yay#mlp#mlp g5#shummy screaming into the void#long post#actually after more to say about them but...i will save that for later#gonna be real we shouldve gotten some of this exposition through mym#like i only ever read the first 2 issues until a few weeks ago so IMAGINE my surprise#trying to figure out the lore of g5 only gets more confusing cause they barely scratched the surface of what actually matters???#we get spike in the last chapter#but he “cant remember what happened”!!! and only regurgitates what we already know#also opaline being some rando that celestia and luna failed to mention is. hilarious in a bad way.#btw i like g5 a lot but woah has the story been poorly delivered through mym alone

I cannot begin to describe my level of confusion rn
#I’m reading Nona the ninth right but then I decided to reread the other two books before finishing Nona cause I was listening to#the audio book and I have trouble following along closely so anyways I reread it and everything started to make sense right but then#I finished the epilogue of Harrow and never realized there’s whole ass chapters after it??? cause I was listening and heard like appendix#and didn’t want to listen to all the definitions so I paused it and never looked back thinking that was the end#so my ass has spent the last half of Nona the ninth not even knowing if gideons body survived I mean I hoped but I didn’t know#I thought that Nona could only be harrow no confusion on the question whatsoever the only question being what soul will inhabit it#I had hoped that it was harrows body and that gideons was somewhere with blood of Eden that we just didn’t know yet#now I’m so confused as to what physical body Nona has and I’m going to have to reread and not listen to the first half so I can know what#what in the world is going on#please no spoilers#but here are my ideas for how this will end:#nona is harrows body brought to Camilla curtesy prrya#Gideon and Harrow will inevitably surface or they’ll find a way to draw them out#everyone will be very sad when Nona leaves#also the fact that narrow the ninth ends with it saying Gideon will return in nona but not harrow????#but I could’ve sworn it was harrows body she was in#I could be wrong though cause I read nona without knowing anything about the Judith files which is just insane#but also I feel like that’s the way it’s intended to be read y’all get new readers to read up until#guys get new readers to stop reading after hot sauce and Nona talk about both having people in the park that night#I’m only mildly joking#harrow the ninth

I'm just about finished with My Little Inferno, and the ML (the LI) is so pathetic omfg. I feel like I'm reading Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudsai due to the main leads both being fucking losers (the FL in Dame na is in a dead end relationship and is practically a sugar mommy who ends up in debt to support her BF which almost leads her to being sold into prostitution. Her attitude isn't great either). Like if I could get a hot guy to fall head over heels in love with me even after he witnesses me puking, pissing, and crying myself out of fear and getting hassled by old bullies (if only I were a BL protag bc he'd think I'm cute), I would think something is wrong with him and that I probably made it in life. The ML isn't particularly... useful. The only thing he has going for him is being cute and short, and being needy towards the LI. The LI makes for a good house husband.
Based on the cover art for the manga, I would've thought it was really dark (like Killing Stalking or Blind play) but its mostly just about cyber crime and embezzlement and sorta the yakuza (mostly mentioned, briefly seen). To an extent, this series sorta reminded me of Semantic Error, but only because of the computer stuff though. Otherwise, I sorta like the slice of life aspects. I think the crime stuff is sorta underbaked. I wish there was more risk or something to make things tense bc the only thing was ML's mom getting get info stolen and getting $300k in debt.
#desiree talks#desiree reads#speaking of which i havent really read BL since i decided on trying to actually clear my manga tabs#like i decided on lowering priority to the following genres: BL#action; manhwa; isekai#main reasons there is too many BL manga and after a while the tropes got repetitive and i needed a break#action to me is boring i need good character moments and dynamics in between fights#(me with demon slayer [and technically yowamushi pedal] all the flashbacks during the fights/races bc there's no where else to put it#i wish demon slayer had more group moments apart from recovering since a lot of characters didnt have any moments until the final battle#especially when fights can end up lasting like a year of updates (lookism gave me ptsd)#and action scenes can get confusing if the artist isn't good at drawing/planning them out#it can also get hard to tell whats going on#isekai- too many and there are a lot of bad ones and i am the type to get fomo and try them all#i technically prefer otome isekai#but only really like regression wherre theyre able to get revenge or make s#a better outcome like I'll Be The Matriarch In This Life#i dont like the idea of actual isekai bc what happens to the original soul of the body that the MC takes over#i'm also not a fan of serie where the MC is automatically doted over by everyone#its annoying#and for manhwa its more of a format thing#and i think with webtoon format there is a lot more being published than mn#manga so its even more to try and read#it doesn't help that a lot of series end up with like 100+ chapters#like a decent shoujo is usually over in like 50 chapters#though thats like 4 years of publication#its less overwhelming when the series is over

I'm doing a 24 hours readathon and I am so ready to sleep (it hasn't even been 10 hours)
#lifeofdee#but I do think it's been kind of productive?#as in I read my non-fiction chapter of the day#the daily pages for blaketober (I love that book although today they were a rather confusing bunch of chapters)#+ one (1) novella#which was Under One Roof by Ali Hazelwood#now I'll start Stuck With You and then I'll consider if reading also Below Zero (and get one out of the way)#or go on with Throne of the Fallen for the rest of the night and read the last novella of the book (Loathe to Love You) -#- once I have the ✨️natural light✨️ once again#ALTHOUGH I didn't plan to read much else so if I read all the novellas now then I can read TotF until I black out/go to sleep before -#- the 24h are up (cheating my way through life)#AND I also managed to thrown in like 4 hours of screen time (I have an addiction I know)

idg the people who say there's barely any romance in usotoki rhetoric....like, just look at the scene in the train where kanoko asks why sensei wants her by his side and he tells her its probably for the same reasons she wants to stay by his, that's basically a confession. or the scene afterwards where they sit in the snow and kanoko hears both of them lying talking about how cold it is because that's really the last thing they could focus on in this moment, or how sensei panics about lying to her about christmas and makes himself the scapegoat when he says all of them are planning a christmas party for her, or just the verY LAST CHapter where they tell each other they love each other, always, and kanako doesn't hear a single lie. admittedly those situations are all pretty late-game, but just that chapter where sensei ran back in the rain to give kanoko the satisfaction of taking him home and then taking a detour because he wanted to show her the hydrangeas, or how he intentionally worded it "I'm not the culprit" to reassure himself kanoko for sure won't doubt him when he got accused of the murder, or how he chased after annoying, troublesome shirou just because kanoko wanted to ask him about her powers..........if anything, their relationship progression is so incredibly natural and smooth, i can't believe it aaaaa
#manga#usotoki rhetoric#i was so into the last few chapters set in winter#when i looked out of the window and saw a blue sky and green trees with absolutely no snow i was confused for a moment#especially because its cold enough already to lie down with a hot water bottle#when they did the christmas party#i was kinda worried they'll reveal kanokos powers#but i'm so glad they didn't#strangely i'm sure that's exactly what i would've hoped for if i read the manga when i was like twelve lol#i had the same thing with maid-sama#where i wanted everyone to know her secret when i first read it in elementary school/middle school#but thanked the heavens it didn't happen when i did my annual re-read in highschool lol#i'm happy we got a chapter where sensei has to lie to kanoko at least once#i really wanted to see how he'd handle that lol
