recently finished binging rivals. declan & cameron have me in a chokehold right from their first introduction! The way they slowly begin to respect each other- the fact he even asks whether he should save the northern Ireland til later for the big Thatcher interview like hello ep1 declan would never have asked her. Read the book- ngl this is one of the rarer cases where the series is so much better than the book(certain plots/character arcs so underdeveloped). Their chemistry is hinted at in the book too which makes for v buzzy s2 theories (she has some interesting narration). Personally I think (hope) she ends up going to declan to help deal w Tony (or by coincidence)- like morally righteous declan putting his principles aside for her?! Oh I deffo think itll be the she falls first but him harder trope. Sidenote what did u make of the patrick relationship? Personally the celestial light thing was cringe🙄(in the book he acc does hav a gf who's at the party when they kiss lmao messy) I cant acc fathom how she would take him srsly I do love a ice queen x himbo/golden retriever x black cat trope but it's not giving. From cameron pov I see his words of affirmation & willingness to fight for her being endearing-smthn shes not really had before. But again I cant see it lasting. Also tho declan is obvs the better parent both he & Maud are selfish parents (him more unintentionally) putting his career first so taggies had to grow up fast. The angst potential of declan putting his sons feelings first before his own dreams- didnt taggie say smthn about how ruthless he can be when he wants something? Ahh this is so messy I love it. I sooo need them to be a slowish burn they have such potential. Sorry to just leave this word vomit in ur inbox they got me bad- the idea of the book crumbs being in s2 has me shaking crying throwing up!! Enjoy the rest of ur day boo♡

Honestly, when it comes to Patrick, I'm with you. I'm not entirely opposed to them but I'm not obsessed like I am with her and Declan. I don't know if Patrick challenges her (in a good way) like it would be with Declan. He kinda mellows her down. But I do see how it can be endearing like you said.

I was thinking that she might try to go to Rupert about the Tony situation at first but because he was rather preoccupied with Taggie in the kitchen, somehow she ends up going to Declan?

Idk but there's so much potential with those two.

Now I'm just waiting on the season 2 announcement 😭

I got Dream Thieves sooner than I expected! It's good to get back into the groove of the series.

I definitely missed Ronan and all the moments where it's revealed how sweet he is and how he comes off as mean or rude because he is protective of the people he loves. I particularly appreciate his relationship with Matthew (such a golden retriever, the sweet boy!!!). I almost wonder if his rough exterior is perpetuated by the way people treat him- like even the way Calla calls him "Snake", surely that must continue a cycle where he feels the need to outwardly be a "bad boy".

Golly gee, I forgot everything Blue goes through in this book- kissing Noah, breaking up with Adam, her night car ride with Gansey. This girl sure has the romantic drama!

It does make me sad, though, how Noah kinda loses his importaces after the first book? Like, ofc he's still there and the catalyst of it all, but... he's a fading boy.

Also, I know the whole point of Adam's story is that he's changing because of Cabeswater and the power/influence waking the ley line gives him. (Maybe even the confidence to pave his own way in life!) but the line about him and Gansey being on perpendicular paths, not parallel ones, actually hit so hard. Like yeah... sometimes life's that way, and it really does suck, and you just have to keep on living it, even if your best friend has to follow a different route.

(I forgot Kavinsky died, but whoooooops. I also kinda love and hate his role, like ik he kinda has to be there for Ronan's Adam awakening, but also... I feel like he really pulls Ronan into his toxic circle before he goes out.)

Hiii! Ronan 😔✋ he was going through it in this book and I also think it’s bc he’s just always feeling like he’s so other and doesn’t fit into this world bc of his dreaming and everything (especially given greywaren) So yeah Ronan goes through life with a hard exterior bc I think after his father’s death, he has the stress of making sure he doesn’t become a cause of another one. He’s had to learn to keep his distance and try not to care but he cares so much and it fucks him up inside. Also the tension between him and Declan and how Matthew ironically tethers him in this world bc Ronan loves him so much and after Declan’s pov in the dreamer trilogy the lynch brothers will forever have changed me.

Omg blue was also going through it in this book 😭 and also when I first read it I was so annoyed that Adam just kept wanting to kiss blue and wasn’t taking the no (like being all pissy and sad) cuz I was like she shouldn’t. have. to give. you. a reason! But then I was also like Adam just wants to be loved and to be wanted and blue DID want to kiss him but she didn’t want to risk it cuz like imagine you kiss a dude bc you think ur not soulmates and then u end up killing him anyway OOF so their breakup was so angsty but much needed cuz they just were not ready for each other (Adam bc he was just getting frustrated blue was keeping something from him and Blue bc she wasn’t ready to tell him about the curse)

And so! When blue and Noah kissed I was like this is so fucked up just let them all kiss each other 😭

I will also always be so bittersweet about Noah bc from a storytelling perspective yes him fading away and being forgotten is important but also…noah come back 😭

Complicated relationship with a parent they once adored

Inexplicable magic that is difficult to explain and makes their lives harder (Like everything about Ronan/Jason coming back to life and the Pit)

General asshole who actually does care a lot

Cared the MOST about one person (Gansey) and slowly came to care about everyone else; fighting and clawing their way back into their own families

It is about RAGE and REGRET. FEAR and FORGIVENESS. It is BEING THE MONSTER AND ASKING FOR LOVE ANYWAY

Ok but. But but. Are there any other parallels? You could go the Lynch brothers route (Dick as Declan, Tim or Damian as Matthew, Bruce as a complicated and dead Niall whose obsessions killed him without considering what it would leave behind for his sons). But I think this really only considers the characters relationships with Jason, not who they are as a person. IF we are looking at who they are instead of their relationships (so yes this does not consider romantic/platonic/blahblah):

It would be easy to say Dick is Gansey. They have the same name, are ~leaders~, and are canonically the prettiest princess in any room. I get it and maybe in the Titans you'd be right, but here, Bruce is Gansey. He is the one with the quest! He is the one driving things forwards and bringing the others along. He's the one with the family name and the family wealth and the family home. He went through something traumatic as a child that irrevocably changed him, fueled his intense guilt and obsession. He brought the group together, and yet feels left behind by them. Someone who cares deeply about the people immediately around him, and yet will not stop pursuing his other goals even if it's hurting them or himself. Obsessed, I think, with proving that he deserves to be here.

Which means that Dick...is Adam Parrish. Like. The constant search for independence. The perfectionism. The bad relationship with his father that forced him to need to be his own man. (Sorry real Bruce but you sucked in batman #416) Loving someone so much and yet always thinking the worst of them. Refusing to be a burden and yet accepting any yoke that comes his way. The intensity of the performance, of pretending to be who you wish you were for the people you care about. Taking on responsibilities because there is literally no other choice, nothing else you could do. Picking the best of your options and knowing that none for them are to rest easy. Valuing freedom so much and giving up your literal body for the quest.

PLUS (less perfect but): Cass as Henry Cheng (and not just bc they are both asian do not look at me like that) Narrative outsider who was watching from afar and put themselves in the narrative. Was molded by shady parent's shady business practices. Was put in a situation as a child they should not have had to endure, which challenged their beliefs and shaped them anew. And maybe like, later Tim as Noah, a bright, fun, young kid on a skateboard who gets himself involved in something too big for him and is undeniably damaged by it. Tim isn't betrayed by someone the way Noah is, but he's kind of...betrayed by the narrative, in a way? Betrayed by the adventure that he thought he was getting. Too clever for his own good, but sometimes naive about people. Lowkey a mirror that lets people see whatever they want to see lol

(I don't see super clear parallels for anyone else lol but I did have a fun time with the thought of Damian as Blue (short/down to fight/has another family/environmentalist/kind of feels fundamentally alienated as someone who is not like everyone else/wears green))

Declan wasn't the type of person that believed in fate yet there was a part of him that believed that the two crossed paths for a reason. Not only had she been meant to save his life the day they met , but she continued to save him by telling him information that would put herself in danger. If it hadn't been for Violet he wouldn't have ever seen the blindside from his youngest sister and Mason. He still recalls the first interaction the two males had , how convincing the other male could be. There had been moments that Declan forget about the warnings that Violet gave him about Mason. He definitely could see how easy it must have been for him to charm his way onto the good side of Amelia. Not only that but Mason had managed to not only win over the trust of his sister but her heart as well. Knowing that it is going to continue to be an issue until Declan is either able to come up with a plan on how to ruin whatever they have been working on or to simply break the pair up. Male knowing it would crush Amelia , but she hadn't thought twice before trying to ruin his relationship with Violet. ❝ Oh I am sure that your words are playing on repeat in that mind of her's. Trust issues is kind of a major thing for Amelia , and you just gave her a reason to possibly lose whatever trust she holds for him. It doesn't matter Violet if you've heard them before. It doesn't mean that it is right or ever will be. ❞ Declan take's the femme's face into his hands as his eyes lock with her's so that she sees that he means what he is saying. ❝ All that I really know is that it involved the two crossing the line of being professional partners and she said things that just turned into a shit show. ❞ Declan hadn't felt the need to ask Mason for full details about what takes place between himself and Amelia out of respect and just that it would be weird as fuck.

❝ Maybe he himself hasn't worked with the manor , however he has a brother named Lincoln whom also is involved in our world. Their mother is a lawyer so it's been pretty easy for the family to stay under the radar of police. ❞ Declan feels like Violet should have a little bit of a backstory on the family that he is going to be involved with his plan to keep Mason and Amelia off his back for as much time as he needs to figure things out. ❝ Amelia was madly in love with Gabriel , and then just one day she wasn't. I never asked her what happened between the two but it had to be something major for her to not fight for their relationship when it called it off. ❞ His gaze adverting away from femme's for a couple of seconds as he remembers how hard it had been on his sister. Not only that but their father had been angry when the relationship had fallen through since he'd be the man that he'd want his daughter to marry. Speaking of marriage , Declan can't help but be surprised with himself when he had asked for Violet to marry him. Knowing that he is more than likely putting both of their lives at risk for marrying someone that looked down upon in their world. To him the status thing is all bullshit , if you loved a person than why should it matter if they don't come from the same social status. He knows that he loves Violet and he isn't going to allow her to slip between his fingers all because of status. It is music to his ears to hear Violet speak of loving him. ❝ I love you too , Violet. I have no plans on making it have to wait for more than a couple of weeks. I have my own connections that I trust to be able to help us out without being caught. ❞ Declan has no plans on waiting months because that meant that he would have to play the role of pretending to be into another woman that he simply wasn't. Even though plotting and deceiving is a huge thing in their world for the most part he likes to take the more truthful route. ( @thewcllingtons )

Violet knew that this situation wouldn't be solved overnight. There happened to be a lot of moving pieces between Mason, Amelia and his father. She did have hope with the news that their fight didn't go without a punch. They both managed to hit each other where it hurts. Amelia may have been able to make her feel insecure, but Violet managed to do something much worse, plant doubts about Mason's true purpose for being in her life. The wound is something they could exploit later down the line. She often didn't feel the need for revenge for anyone outside of the manor, but this situation wasn't entirely false. ❝ Really? I stand by all that I've said with her. I just stood my ground the best I could and told her the truth about Mason. She didn't seem to believe me, but maybe she's doubtful now. Her words did hurt, but she didn't say anything I'm not used to hearing. ❞ The femme knew what it felt like to become bewitched by the male. She didn't want Amelia to feel the pain of being played. ❝ Yeah. I've only seen him upset once and it wasn't something I personally saw myself. It was a rumor in class. He tries to let everything slide off of him so she must've done a real number on him. ❞ Violet wondered what Amelia had said to make Mason upset.

❝ Gabriel Hawkins....❞Letting the name roll off of her tongue as she tried to recall his name. One hobby of Violet's happened to be keeping a list of people who worked in or around the manor. She may not know him personally, but she would've seen the name or heard it at least once. ❝ I don't believe I've heard a Hawkins come up. I can check for you if you want? ❞ The manor had far too many families of their payroll to keep up with. It may be good information to have in case of emergency. She kept in mind the previous relationship of the pair. Wondering again how their relationship apart. Declan still found him a decent enough guy to trust. She couldn't understand why she'd throw it all away for the likes of a snake like Mason. ❝ I know you will. ❞ One thing he could rely on is Violet's unwavering support and approval. The deepest part of her soul knew that safety and comfort could be found in him. It's why she didn't find herself hesistate to agree to marry him. Marriages across classes were forbidden in the crime world; a marriage done in secret on top of that could be a death sentence. Violet trusted that her soon-to-be husband would ensure that everything is safe enough to proceed. Sealing the engagement with a kiss felt like heaven. She nodded in a silent understanding. They couldn't just go to the courthouse today and sign papers. It would have to be inconspicuous as possible. Violet couldn't stop herself from looking at Declan with utter adoration,❝ I love you, Declan... And I'll wait as long as you need me to. ❞ The femme yet to utter a confession of love to anyone in her life up until this point.

You were an easygoing person, you enjoyed spending time with your friends, even if that meant at a club for five hours, but you’d prefer a barbecue with drinks. And being the only single lady in your group left, they made it their mission to set you up. They’d searched high and low for a worthy suitor, to find Mason Mount. One of your friend’s boyfriend’s friends.

He was also an easygoing person, was very fun to be around and always made people laugh. But as they introduced the pair of you, it hadn’t gone to plan — it had gone worse. You’d clashed over a debate, disagreeing with each other completely and now you refused to go anywhere with your friends if he were there. It was clear their plan had failed, and that the pair of you just didn’t like each other.

But Declan was adamant. He knew you quite well, he knew what made you laugh, what your interests were, and technically, you lined up perfectly with this man. So whenever one of your friends would host a barbecue, they knew you’d say yes, and Declan would invite Mason, claiming to not have known you were coming. The barbecue was a disaster. Once again, you’d disagreed on something and spent the whole evenings in different rooms.

But whenever you’d talk or see each other, not willingly, he’d use that horrible nickname. Princess. It was ghastly. He’d heard you ask for a specific rosé to go with dinner once, and ever since then he’d seen you as completely high maintenance. And labelled you as a princess. Your friends thought it was the beginning of a blooming relationship, but Mason quickly shut it down. Saying, “as if, if she’s fussy about wine with dinner, she’s fussy about men.”

Your friends were really pushing this dating thing on you both, but you weren’t having any of it. You’d be caught dead before you were being intimate with this man boy. It seemed that every time you were hanging out with your friends, Declan was with Mason, and the two of you would spot each other again.

“Happy with your wine, princess?” He sneered, grabbing the glass you’d poured for yourself and sipping on it, all whilst maintaining eye contact. He was an asshole, a hot asshole.

It hurt, but you couldn’t deny he was your type. He was just so handsome, and the way he interacted with Declan and the people he actually liked, you could see why he was a good friend. But to you, you didn’t get on. Not at all. There was a tension, and you could quite name what it was. Mason seemed to hate you.

Mason couldn’t deny you were attractive, because you were. Declan showed him your Instagram, and he was almost drooling at you. But meeting you in person, the way you both interacted, it didn’t work the way he thought it would. It’s not like he hated you, he’d sometimes hide a laugh after a joke you made, trying to not inflate your ego. There was just something about you, he was sexually attracted to you, sure, but he enjoyed toying with you. It was a long game of teasing to him, slowly getting you to fall for him. He didn’t think you’d take it the wrong way and assume he hated you.

“Clubbing tonight, babe?” A friend had asked, catching you on the phone just as you left work. You knew what they were doing, you’d ‘accidentally’ bump into Mason again. It’s like they wanted you to fight.

You sighed and started your car up, phone squashed between your cheek and shoulder. “Sure, where?”

You heard a few giggles in the background, matching one of them to Declan. He had a distinctive laugh, more like a cackle. “That place we got like 28 free shots from,” your friend reminded you, “sound good?”

“What a good night that was.” You reminisced, turning out of the car park of your work building and making your usual route home. “Sure, I’ll be there.” When you’d gotten home and showered, you’d held onto the glimmer of hope that Mason would actually change how he felt about you. That he’d go from hating you and despising being in your presence, to wanting nothing more than to be in your presence, and your bed. You put your best dress on, best heels, best everything. Ready for Mason.

“There you are.” Your friend groaned, pulling you into a hug, and behind her was none other than: Declan, two more of your friend group, and Mason. You saw him wink at you, and you rolled your eyes, knowing this would be the longest night you’d have to endure Mason’s shit. “Why’d you take so long to get here?”

“Her carriage was far too slow.” Mason put on his best posh accent, earning a laugh from the rest of the group. You just glared at him and entered the club, hoping you didn’t see him for the rest of the evening. And you didn’t. But he saw you.

He watched you throughout the night, more to keep an eye on you if anything. In the taxi to the club, Declan and your friends were telling him all about your drunk alter ego. The second you’d had more than 5 shots, you were a different person. Bumping into people, falling over, climbing onto tables, kissing random men. The last one had Mason’s jaw clenching, but he ignored it and decided he’d keep watch. To make sure that nothing like that would be happening. He’d zone out of Declan’s conversation, watching as you moved your hips. The music had drowned out, the people around you becoming blurry messes, and it was only you.

His little bubble of Y/N had soon disappeared when he’d lost sight of you, immediately sending him into panic mode. He looked around at the faces that once surrounded you, trying to find yours. He’d gotten up from his seat at the bar, frantically walking around the dance floor to find you getting almost trampled on. You looked up at his concerned eyes, and Mason had lifted you up, carrying you outside of the club and round the corner, where it was a little less populated.

“What happened? Are you hurt?” He peppered you with questions, scanning your arms and legs for any damage. But you pushed him off. It was clear you were drunk, your eyes half closed and your balance completely gone. Even though you’d pushed him away from you, your arm was still tightly around him as you held yourself up.

“I’m fine.” You slurred, the world around you spinning as you clutched onto his shirt, “really I’m good.” It was a well-known thing that when drinking, once you get outside, it’s worse. It never really hits you until you leave the room. Mason searched around for a bench, but couldn’t find one. Instead, putting his jacket on the ground and helping you sit down.

“Thank you, Mase.” You smiled sweetly, a smile so sweet that he couldn’t help but smile too. “This is very nice of you, it’s the nicest you’ve ever been to me actually.” It burnt hearing that. Mason knew he came off as a dick to you, but he didn’t hate you. Not in the slightest.

“You’re welcome, princess.” He replied, keeping the dickish personality alive. It wasn’t him at all, he wanted to be sweet and intimate with you, but you didn’t want him. Or so he thought.

You tutted and picked your head up from his shoulder, your glare almost burning holes into his eyes. “I’m not your princess.”

Mason just laughed at you, pushing your head back onto his shoulder gently and keeping his arm around you. He was so protective of you tonight, and as much as he played around and was mean to you, he’d never let another person be that way to you. He knew he didn’t mean it, and deep down, you knew that too. “Yeah, yeah.” Mason shrugged off your remark, holding you closer to him.

“You’re lucky you’re super hot because I would not want to go on a date with someone as mean as you.” You mentioned, not even understanding what you were saying. It was as if you didn’t have a filter, you were just saying whatever was on your mind.

“I’m super hot, am I?” He questioned, a smirk on his lips as he looked down to you. You’d met his eyes and groaned, resting your head in your hands now. With utter shame coursing your veins.

“Oh God,” you whimpered, emotions getting the best of you, “now Mason knows I like him. This day sucks, I want to go home.” Mason was glad to be stone cold sober, as now he’d remember how you felt.

“Don’t worry,” he whispered back to you, lips dangerously close to your ear, “Mason likes you too.”

Ok so I’m into the dreamer trilogy and haven’t read the Raven cycle...what is Declan’s characterisation/journey there?

also declan’s TRC storyline is like. equal parts horribly fucking sad and unbelievably fucking hilarious so. i will try to strike a Balance

FIRST OFF.  there is exactly one (1) declan POV chapter in the entire series. it happens toward the end of the last book. up until then, everything we know about him comes from the observations and narration of others.

he is also a very minor character.  his importance grows throughout the series, but almost all of his actions happen offscreen.  it’s not until the last book that we know exactly how much he’s been dealing with the whole time.

when he’s introduced in the first book, he appears as a plot device.  here is a two-dimensional horrible controlling hardass who doesn’t give a shit about anything but his future political career.  look at his fake, smug fucking grin.  how did someone like ronan end up with a brother like him??  doesn’t matter.  it’s a convenient excuse for ronan to live with his best friend in a drafty warehouse, which means more room for YA hijinks!

declan’s introduction scene is Embroiled in Capital-D Douchebaggery. according to the narration (from gansey and adam), he loves to fuck women and then never call them back, cozy up to powerful people, and bitch about how ronan’s ruining his life by being sad about their dead parents.  SOME people can just get over their dead parents, ronan!

this intro scene is also Extremely Funny i 100% recommend reading it even if u don’t read the actual series.  ronan makes a nasty comment, declan goes “why are you the way that you are” and tries to salvage his date, gansey utters the phrase “man whore”

then later that night things go like. actually bad.

declan shows up at the same pizza place where ronan is with his friends.  this scene is gansey pov.  gansey runs out to the parking lot to find the two of them Very Literally Trying To Kill Each Other.  you don’t see that violence in cdth - there’s only the TINIEST shadow of it when declan confronts ronan over matthew - so i Cannot Express Enough that someone is going to end up hospitalized at BEST. ronan’s already slammed declan’s head on the car, declan’s already grabbed ronan and beaten the shit out of his face, like.

you do not get good old-fashioned Declan Lynch At His Actual Worst in cdth. u might be thinking, THAT guy???? doing THIS????

oh yeah. things are real bad between declan and ronan.

after gansey breaks up the fight (and gets punched in the face for his trouble, albeit accidentally), declan tells ronan that their dad would be fucking ashamed to see him now & that he’s washing his hands of it & basically if ronan wants to go off and fucking die, he can.

this is like. just a couple months after the magical suicide attempt referenced in cdth

in the aftermath of that scene it becomes clear that ronan absolutely unequivocally 100% will kill himself if he has to live with declan. hence. why he’s living with gansey instead.  gansey spends that whole night petrified that the declan altercation will lead to another attempt, and for Good Reason

so like, that’s how we first meet declan. he’s an uncaring wannabe corporate asshole who does not give a fuck and who only exists to exacerbate ronan’s mental health issues.

but then the opening of book 2 gets real interesting.

book 2 is where we start learning more about the lynch family.  we learn that ronan’s father was a dreamer who sold his creations on the black market, we learn that that’s why he was murdered. we learn that ronan’s a dreamer too. we learn that there are very powerful people looking for the greywaren, an artifact that takes objects from dreams. those powerful people just don’t realize it’s a person, yet.

so here’s the assassin who killed niall lynch.

he goes to declan’s dorm.

with everything we know about declan, the kid should be completely unprepared.  he can box, but the assassin knows that, so there’s no real advantage.  he’s alone, and he doesn’t have an escape route.

declan pulls out a gun.

this is an unexpected turn of events.

unfortunately he ends up getting beaten half to death with the butt of said gun, because he loses the ensuing physical struggle for the weapon.  the assassin is like, i need the greywaren.  declan is like, i know it exists but i don’t know what it is.  i’ll find it for you.  i’ll get it to you.  then you’ll leave me the fuck alone

now with everything we know of declan at this point - his attitude toward ronan, his general demeanor, and this new knowledge that he knew about the black market - there’s one obvious question.

will declan sell ronan out if he finds out about the dreaming.

and like, okay. their relationship is antagonistic in cdth but it is NOT what it is in trc. believe me when i tell you that at that point, when you’re reading, you can pretty reasonably go, “oh, god.  oh god.  oh god please no one ever tell declan what the greywaren is.  oh god.”

declan has some other interactions with ronan and the gang throughout the book, mostly where he’s just a hardass who tells ronan to stop causing trouble.  adam’s the only one who notices that declan is scared.  like bone-deep shaking to the core petrified.  about Something.

probably getting beaten to within an inch of his life by the man who murdered his father.  that’s the reasonable reader conclusion.

so imagine how everything changes when you find out that declan already knows.  that declan’s known about ronan’s dreaming for longer than ronan has.  that declan knew exactly what and who the greywaren was, and he lied to a man who was ready to torture him for information, and he got away with it.

suddenly a lot of things recontextualize.

“keep your head down and stop making trouble”? people are gonna NOTICE your magic bullshit, ronan, we do not have time for this!

“stop hanging with that loser druggie friend of yours”? you mean the loser druggie friend who sells on the magic black market and doesn’t care about protecting himself or anyone else?

“i got super weird for no reason about ronan sleeping close to adam”? i don’t have fucking TIME to be homophobic i’m busy with your POTENTIAL TO MANIFEST NIGHT TERRORS IN FRONT OF WITNESSES IN BROAD DAYLIGHT

“i’ll find out what the greywaren is and bring it to you”? i’ll die. i’m making a bargain to die. i’m never giving you the greywaren and i know you’re going to kill me about it and that’s fine as long as my brothers are safe

ronan doesn’t know that he dreamed matthew.  declan knows.  he’s known the whole time.  declan tells ronan in book 3.  and then things recontextualize even further, because ronan’s death is also matthew’s, and matthew IS close to declan in trc.

but declan never tells the goddamn truth unless it’s his last option.  he doesn’t tell ronan that he knows about the dreaming and he doesn’t tell ronan what specifically wants to hurt him and the lack of communication fucking destroys both of them.

in the last book, ronan realizes declan loves him.

more than that, he realizes declan’s loved him the whole time.

this is when declan finally tells the truth.  things are getting bad, plot-wise, and declan is scared, so he comes clean.  he tells ronan that niall specifically tasked declan with protecting ronan from the market.  he begs ronan to run from the danger.  “let’s pour gasoline on everything dad left and start over.”

this is also when ronan realizes that declan’s childhood was very different from ronan’s own.  and that niall and aurora lynch were not the same people to declan that they were to ronan.  and that their father’s decisions are what’s driven the wedge between him and declan all this time

(he’s still struggling with the cognitive dissonance of this in cdth. i don’t think he knows how to adjust his perception of declan to fit this new information.)

aaaaand the final scene with declan makes me cry every time i read it so instead of summarizing, here’s the important part:

Ronan delivered a sharp tap to the object, and a small cloud of fiery orbs sprayed up with a sparkling hiss.

“Jesus, Ronan!” Declan jerked his chin away.

“Please. Did you think I’d blow your face off?”

He demonstrated it again, that quick tap, that burst of brilliant orbs. He tipped it into Declan’s hand, and before Declan could say anything, jabbed it to activate it once more.

Orbs gasped up into the air. For a moment, he saw how his brother was caught inside them, watching them soar furiously around his face, each gold sun firing gold and white, and when he saw the spacious longing in Declan’s face, he realized how much Declan had missed by growing up neither dreamer nor dreamt. This had never been his home. The Lynches had never tried to make it Declan’s home.

“Declan?” Ronan asked.

Declan’s face cleared. “This is the most useful thing you’ve ever dreamt. You should name it.”

“I have. ORBMASTER. All caps.”

“Technically you’re the orbmaster though, right? And that’s just an orb.”

“Anyone who holds it becomes an ORBMASTER. You’re an ORBMASTER right now. There, keep it, put it in your pocket. D.C. ORBMASTER.”

Declan reached out and scuffed Ronan’s shaved head. “You’re such a little asshole.”

The last time they’d stood on this roof together, their parents had both been alive, and the cattle in these fields had been slowly grazing, and the world had been a smaller place. That time was gone, but for once, it was all right.

The brothers both looked back over the place that had made them, and then they climbed down from the roof together.

How tall are Declan and Hasan? What's their age? Do they have family? Does Declan have a partner?

Hi hello anon!! I know it's been an eternity since you sent this ask and I'm so very sorry I'm just now getting to it, but I really appreciate your interest!

How tall are Declan and Hasan? I'm putting this in centimeters because that's what the program I used to decide had! Hasan is 176cm and Declan is 167cm, which I believe translates roughly over to 5'7" and 5'4". Something like that. Not too much of a difference, but it's enough for my gremlin brain that craves whumpers that are taller than their whumpees :3 (If anyone wants a bonus: Lee is 160cm! We love a short king!)

What's their age? Hasan is 29 and Declan was 24 at the beginning of the story, but now that his birthday's passed he's 25!

Do they have family? Okay, so randomly a few months ago I did flesh out Declan's family! He's got two great dads and a sister who love him very much! He lives away from all of them and his depression made him fall into a period where he didn't communicate much at all, but the lack of any presence from him now is… definitely coming to their attention. As for Hasan… I don't know much about their family. The one thing I know is they received a generous inheritance from their grandparents and use it as padding, which certainly explains owning a very nice home by themself. Otherwise, I know Hasan's parents are still alive and do support their queer identity, but who knows if they've figured out or support their child's… less than legal hobbies.

Does Declan have a partner? Nope! After graduating college, he really hasn't found a space in his life for dating, nor has he figured out how to meet people authentically. Dating apps are fine and all… for other people. They make him anxious as hell and he'd rather just take the friends to lovers route if he ends up in a romantic relationship. And no, I have no idea what his orientation is quite yet :P

OKAY so common sense is telling me that the Greywaren mess happened the way it did because...well, Maggie needed a plot for her book. Obviously. But today not only do I have my tin hat on, I also have on my dunce cap, so. Some questions. Questions that I don’t think are that important/that we will get a solid answer to, but questions nonetheless: 

1) I get that Niall was probably an annoying dick, but if Greenmantle was dead set on having the Greywaren in his possession, I wonder why he chose to go the route of killing Niall to scare Declan into giving it up...when it probably made sense for it to be the other way around? True, he would figure a seventeen year old would possibly more easily threatened than Professional Asshole Niall Lynch, but if it was Niall who was dangling this treasure in the first place it seems kinda counter-productive to off him, you know? After five years of being shafted by Niall did Greenmantle go “well even if we lose the Greywaren by killing him, he’ll at least shut up” ? Because fair I guess, but also...so dumb!

2) Talking about dumb decisions by Greenmantle, okay the body wasn’t discovered by who you wanted to find it, but that set your plan back by two whole years? Like, if the messaging was “I killed your dad and dumped his body in the driveway of your childhood home as a warning”...that probably came across. Believe in yourself, Colin!  Also, why didn’t he think the son who did find the body might know about the Greywaren? Obviously thank GOD, he didn’t decide to set his sights on Ronan or anything, but this seems like terribly ineffectual supervillainy.

3) I guess this also begs the question of just how deep was Declan in his Dad’s mess if Greenmantle was like “yes this kid is clearly is The One who will have the answers”? Sure, Niall was not doing any favours for Declan by including him in the Fairy Market business, but I thought he was at least decent enough to be discreet about it! Instead literally everyone at the Fairy Market recognises him. In CDTH, Declan tells Ronan that Niall “wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you,” and even Ronan Lynch, master of navel-gazing, thinks about how the implication is that something bad could happen to Declan. I get that he’s the unfavourite son and stuff, but that just seems really mean :( 

I just want to know more about Niall’s relationship with Declan, because he clearly...trusts him enough to make him executor of the Will and accompany him on his trips and give him a townhouse and 3 million, but seems also bitter? careless? enough to go “well, if he dies he dies. what can you do” :/

4) Niall obviously had a complete and utter disregard for his family’s safety and well-being, but I was always under the impression that his assholery was more...generalised than specific. 

But this seems super specific. Not only did he not teach Ronan shit about dreaming and drag Declan into a life of magical crime, it seems he purposefully painted a giant target on Ronan’s back by promising to sell the Greywaren (who was his own “favourite” son) to the most dangerous people in the illegal artifact scene, as well as clearly indicate that Declan had the knowledge about this item, effectively painting a target on his back as well. And of course, he did nothing for Matthew and Aurora despite their lives clearly being in danger as well. I just...genuinely do not get why Niall would dangle the Greywaren as this grand prize? Even if he didn’t know it was Ronan. Shits and giggles? Did he decide to die for shits and giggles?

(Also I haven’t reread BLLB and TRK yet, so if I’m misremembering/forgetting something [suuuper likely] let me know!)

I did finish, and I have spent the last couple days off tumblr to have some more time to sit with it and see how I feel about it.

As a whole, it's a pretty fun read.

As a whole, if the Raven Cycle had been like Mister Impossible, I doubt I would have become fannish about it.

It's tough to judge, because this book was not the book that I wanted to get, and in many ways I knew that it was never going to be the book that I wanted to get, because I didn't like so many of the plot elements set up in Call Down the Hawk.

But there are other aspects where it wasn't what I'd hoped, in ways I wasn't expecting or had hoped would be mitigated. For one: It was obvious all along that this book was going to feature Ronan and Hennessy being alienated from their families and friends, but I had really hoped that this book would feature peak alienation and the third book could start from a place of rebuilding the relationships between Ronan and Declan, and Ronan and Adam, and Ronan and Matthew, and Hennessy and Jordan.

That, uh. That is not the book we got. That is not the trilogy we're getting.

Overall, when I try to put my finger on it, I just...missed all of those nice relationship moments that Maggie is so good at, and that The Raven Cycle has so many of? The moments that made me love the characters and relationships in The Raven Cycle enough to get so immersed in it? I mean, geez, this book features first Declan/Jordan kiss and first Liliana/Carmen kiss, and I just do not at all feel like I got to see and live and enjoy those romances! I wanted to actually watch them fall in love instead of just get told they're spending a lot of time together. I wanted to see Jordan and Matthew bonding over being dreams and like, yeah, we got a scene of that but...we got a scene.

There were lots of vibrant character moments, but I just didn't get the relationship growth -- or not even growth but just relationship existence, that I wanted. This was such a lonely, solitary, desolate book, and maybe that's what Maggie was going for, but, yeah. This wasn't the book I wanted.

(Also, real talk, where the fuck were Mór o Córra and New Fenian? We're just...dropping that plot thread? Like on a real meaty character level, they were such the obvious route for an arc of Ronan reconsidering his understanding of Niall, and his relationship with the memory of his father, which is the number one thing of all that I wanted from this trilogy. But more importantly, on a shallow level, I wanted more Declan angst and I wanted more opportunities to make Good Place mommy-girlfriend jokes. You're already making me put up with Fucking Insufferable Bryde for three books, Maggie, why you gotta take that away from me.)

open heart book 2 and its current plot threads

man, looking at it so far they’ve already set up a lot of drama and plot threads and it’s only been 5 chapters ajdhsjs i just complied all the plot points and threads that i’ve noticed while replaying below. this is a long one that no one asked for but i wanted to gather my thoughts since a lot is gonna be happening our second year it seems.

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS and shitty theories from yours truly

-the death of someone we apparently know and love: at this point, it’s too early to say decisively who it is. it could be anyone really (except the LI’s. i still don’t think they’re gonna kill off rafael he’s most likely just a red herring). they hit us with this one right off the bat and is a major plot thread.

-esme and dr. thorne: this is obviously gonna start rearing its head later. we don’t know much about thorne yet and what he’s capable of. we just know he’s got a grudge, he’s influential, and we’ve been warned about him (harper doesn’t like him. we do as harper does)

-the state of edenbrook and financial problems: this is another obvious huge one. this is definitely gonna be bleeding into a lot of the drama that unfolds in the story and between the characters. It will also be the overarching issue that they have to work towards solving. we’re already seeing how its affecting everyone and we just got a hint that mass kenmore is also suffering. which is the seed planted for another problem later.

-rafael and sora: if you’re romancing him, you get tha added drama of being in a love triangle yaaaay! he may or may not also be dying so this could go hand in hand with the first point. either way, it’s drama.

-bryce’s family and his little sister: we just got introduced to this one. this is a whole can of worms on its own with his parents being criminals (and wealthy ones at that) and now his younger sister is staying with him after running away from home for a reason that hasn’t been explained yet. this is gonna be a fun one to watch unfold. angsty, but fun! especially if you’re romancing him, you’re touching on the emotional aspects with him now more than the physical (keke)

-ethan: ...in general. yeah this guy gets a whole point on his own because my god this man has so much drama and angst surrounding him, it’s practically bleeding out of his pores. if you’re romancing him, you’re already subscribing into the forbidden relationship storyline. the whole “will they, won’t they” shebang. the writers have also laid the groundworks for what is possibly the overarching theme within his route this time: you and ethan’s disagreements on how the diagnostics team (and the hospital as a whole) should proceed forward. this one’s interesting since the writers foreshadowed it in chapter one with ethan’s diamond scene when he and mc talked about standing up to one’s superiors. looks like ethan himself will be a superior we need to stand up to. we also know we’re gonna be getting drama in the form of his absent mother who walked out on him 25 years ago. all in all, i’m not sure if ethan stans are winning or losing at this point.

-jackie’s financial troubles: not only is money a very, very big problem now at edenbrook, our salary’s are getting cut and they’re paying the residents an intern’s salary. jackie seems to be the one hit the hardest with this, since we saw her check get bounced, and she doesn’t want to ask her family for help (which could also play into more problems later).

-sienna’s exhaustion: i’m not sure if this is gonna end up being more significant later, but the writers consistently bring up how sienna appears very tired and i am Worried(tm). not much else to say on this right now, but @ mitch....if you’re picking on her and making her life harder..............watch yourself

-rivalry with mass kenmore: with the state budget being cut, and all the hospitals scrambling to stay afloat, edenbrook isn’t the only one panicking. like kyra said in chapter 5, mass kenmore is also a hospital that got hit hard and they’re looking for a method to keep themselves open. from the description for chapter 6, it appears that they’re also gonna be jumping on the bandwagon of chasing after wealthy, high-profile patients to fund them. also since people have posted the outfits spoilers weeks ago, mc’s “undercover” mass kenmore uniform makes sense if you operate with this happening.

-aurora and transferring to mass kenmore: i guess this could also go with the point above and play into the rivalry later since MK technically is stealing away one of edenbrook’s most talented doctors. i’m not sure what else could ensue from this, but i can’t imagine this won’t come up later as some dramatic point.

-declan nash and panacea labs: and of course, we can’t forget this one. with the way book 1 ended, i can’t imagine declan isn’t planning some form of revenge on mc and ethan here. the writers are already sprinkling this back in with those frequent appearances from declan at the hospital. he also said some concerning things about funding and money (that the mc noted too). too early to say what form this will take, but we should keep this one in the back of our heads. we haven’t seen the last of nash and he won’t let us forget it. (again, harper hates him. we do as harper does)

WHEEEW so that was long. i don’t think anyone cares enough to read all this but man, my blood pressure’s already rising, thinking about all this. AND IT’S ONLY FIVE CHAPTERS IN! remember when the oph team said a lot of things are gonna be happening our second year. they weren’t kidding.

It’s (Im)possible

So, @not-so-innocent-bi-sander and I were doing a thing where we randomly generated a couple of numbers and used those to grab a couple prompts from two different lists. It was fun to theorise about the fics we could write, and then... I wrote one :)

It’s kinda sad, but it resolves at the end!

Summary: Declan (Deceit) is feeling some stuff for his “friend”, yet he knows that because of what he is... he could bring him down forever.

Declan sat on the edge of the bed, the sheets pooling around his waist as he listened to the sound of the shower running in the other room. He caught sight of the somewhat familiar red and white jacket hanging on the handle of his slightly ajar bedroom door and an ache punctured his heart. He was still entirely naked, deep in thought. He had barely moved since his par- friend had left to shower.

“So, I’ll see you again soon?”

A voice broke Declan out of his reverie. He looked up at the man before him, fully dressed, bag in hand, ready to leave the house once more. Declan felt tears welling up but managed to drag a smile onto his face instead.

“Yeah, of course. Just message whenever…”

Declan’s eyes dropped back down to the floor. He waited to hear the footsteps taking that all-too familiar route out of his house. He waited to hear the door shut behind the man leaving him alone once more. He didn’t expect to feel the mattress beside him dip with more weight. Declan’s eyes flicked up to his side, catching the relaxed gaze of the other man who was looking at him.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, cautiously resting his now empty hand on Declan’s covered leg in a show of comfort.

“Nothing is wrong, Roman.” Declan retorted, a little too harsh and snappy, though it was clear Roman didn’t take offense from the inflection.

Roman instead moved the hand and rested it around Declan’s bare shoulders, his fingers brushing against the scales that trailed down that side of his body. “You can tell me anything, y’know? We are still friends.” It was said playfully, but the final words had Declan’s body tensing and his body threatening to release the tears that were just about being contained.

“Everything is fine. Nothing has changed.”

“I never said anything had changed.” Roman paused and his loose arm threatened to fall from Declan’s shoulders, “Do you not want to be friends, Dee?”

“No! I do, I just-!” Declan scrambled, doing his best to assure his friend. Yes, his feelings had progressed far beyond friendship at this point, but it wasn’t worth ruining what they currently had by bringing it up. Declan was doing a damn fine job of repressing all of that until today. He was content with laying in his room after Roman left and crying for an hour before picking himself back up. It was… not ideal. But it was the best solution.

“May I be frank with you?” Roman asked suddenly. Declan warily side-eyed his friend but nodded slowly regardless in response. “Over these past few months, I have realised that our relationship has… changed in my mind.” Declan tensed and dropped his head, readying himself for the inevitable response that he’d heard so many times. He was ready to be left alone again. But Roman surprised him. “My feelings are somehow far stronger for you. I feel a connection so much deeper than anything I have felt before, and I wasn’t sure how to act upon it. I wanted to ensure that I didn’t lose you as a friend, but I feel like today is the perfect opportunity to tell you all of this. And to ask you to try dating, with me.”

The scaled man grimaced. One of his hands was now grasped between both of Roman’s and the man was looking at him with starry eyes, as if he already knew the answer Declan wanted to say. He wanted to agree and live a life with Roman… but that was not going to happen.

“What you just asked for… is impossible, Roman.” Declan muttered, tears finally welling up in his eyes.

“What do you mean? It’ll be fine, we can do this! I know it’ll be hard; your mutation isn’t exactly subtle but-”

“I can’t do this to you.”

“What?”

“I can’t put this on you, Roman.” Declan turned slightly, putting his other hand atop Roman’s and avoiding eye contact entirely by staring at the pile of them. “I can’t burden you with all of what I endure. I would not be alright with letting you drop your career and social standing just for me. It would not be fair for me to do that to you, Roman. We should… stay as we are.”

“But-”

“No buts! I would not be able to live knowing I was the reason for your downfall! You’re an up-and-coming solo artist who everyone adores! You can’t be seen dating a mu-” Declan faltered, “someone, like me.”

“That’s it? It’s all on you?”

“Roman, that’s not what I-”

“Did you ever stop to think about what I want, Declan? Did it ever cross your mind that I was okay with all of that?” Roman ripped his hands from Declan’s loose grasp and grabbed a hold of his face, bringing up so close to his own to forcibly show the scaled man every single drop of determination that was pouring from his eyes, “All of that is unimportant. I don’t care about the fame, the money, the career. I would rather have that one person I deeply care for and who care for me the same, than be surrounding by people who pretend to. Please, at least let us try.”

The pair continued to go back and forth for minutes on end, neither budging from their position on the matter. Roman was slowly getting more and more frustrated, while Declan was getting progressively more distressed and upset. It was a stalemate that was only going to be broken by…

Declan shook his head again, fighting hard to stop the tears that had begun to roll down his cheeks. “No. Roman. I can’t. It’s my final answer.”

“Fine. Then I’m done.” Roman stood sharply, grabbing a hold of his bag. He stormed through the bedroom door and slammed it shut behind him, before doing the same to the front door.

The sound echoed through the space, both of them hitting Declan like a punch to the gut. He sat, motionless, his eyes wide. Thoughts raced through his head. He was truly alone again. He had no one. Roman was the only person who he spoke to, the only one who cared. Tears silently slid down his cheeks for a moment before Declan grabbed a hold of his head and screamed in anguish.

Beyond the front door, Roman heard it. He had not left just yet. Something inside of him wasn’t letting him. A part of him truly believed that Declan would come and give in to his true feelings; both of them had been aware of the mutant’s feelings for a while now. All the talk of society and the populace’s opinions had angered Roman, but it was all slowly dripping away as the rain pelted against his skin. Roman’s own tears mixed with the rain drops as he waited, his back resting against the door.

After a few minutes of listening to the loud sobbing, Roman couldn’t bear it anymore and slowly began the walk to his car. He was lost in his thoughts, so much so that he didn’t hear the splashing of pounding footsteps approaching. It meant that when something latched onto him from behind, the man was given a shock. He turned and was surprised to find the still sobbing Declan holding onto him so tightly, as if he were his only lifeline.

Roman’s bag was dropped as he wrapped his own arms around the scaled man, who was slowly falling to his knees in the dirt beneath them. Neither cared about the mess, as Declan was busy rambling to Roman about how he was sorry, how he didn’t want to lose him, how much he loved him and how long it had been. Roman was quiet and listened, doing his best to cover Declan from the pouring rain with his body as the only thing the scaled man was wearing was his dressing gown, which – Roman knew from experience – was not all that thick. Eventually, Roman managed to quieten Declan a little, rocking the mutant very slightly to calm him the tiniest amount.

“It’s okay. We’ll work this out, alright?” Roman spoke softly into Declan’s hair, arms tightening for a moment. Declan only nodded against the other man’s chest, still sobbing violently in the pouring rain.
