Monday Playlist: Agepoyo!!!
Agepoyo is old gyaru-go.
"Age" means to raise, whereas "poyo" means... well, nothing really. It just sounds cute (and isn't that enough?) Combined, it's used as an expression of enthusiasm, a la exclaiming, "I'm pumped up!" or "I'm so excited!" That's the mood I wanted to capture in today's inaugural Monday Playlist. The songs featured are either explicitly about or convey (through melody or rhythm) a sense of pure excitement. The sort that bubbles up inside you, and when it reaches its peak, you can't help but say, "Agepoyo!"

modern day liebgott is an uber driver who exclusively plays chief keef on his busted out speakers. his car is a 2004 toyota corrolla that smells like cigarette smoke and axe body spray. the rubber is peeling off of two of the doors. the left blinker does not work. a door handle has been mysteriously ripped off and the windows wont roll down. he has ten parking tickets he refuses to pay off and does not care about right of way. if hes delivering your food for uber eats you can count on the fact that he has eaten some of your fries. in spite of all of this he pulls more bitches than all of his friends combined.

jack would be a stem kid because he loves doing experiments the scientific method is his best friend he loves being hands on and getting to be like I was wrong but the right answer is way cooler than I thought it would be and he loves the connections between art and science, like the way chemical reactions are responsible for why pottery glaze looks so cool and how talented at art you have to be to be good at any kind of diagramming or bio illustration
and davey would be a stem kid because people are more impressed by good grades in science and math classes than english classes so he works harder at them even though he really loves language more than numbers and when he ends up in a class with jack who seems to be goofing off all the time he's annoyed by how little work he seems to put in until he realizes actually jack is really smart but completely unaware of it because he thinks he's goofing off when he's actually running pretty well-designed experiments for fun (unsanctioned by the instructor) in between steps of the lab.
#can't decide if this is funnier in high school or college#i think college bc i think. jack is an art major chem minor and everyone is like why would u do that and he's like I like mixing things up#and davey is a biochem major whos like this guy is a nightmare the first class they share#and then is his assigned lab partner the next semester and is like good grief this is going to be miserable#until they do their first lab and jack is Really good at it. he's chattering away abt his sculpture class and how hard it is#while achieving results with Way less deviation from the perfect result than anyone else bc he's genuinely obsessed with chemistry and love#loves it so much.#anyway. i love this for them ive decided <3#jack would be besties with the chem professor everyone else is soooo intimidated by#bc he has No fear of authority and he's so passionate abt chem#he's like hey. can i use the lab during your office hours to do experiments for fun. and the prof is like#uh. sure? and then spends an hour or so a week supervising jack having fun in the lab#but jack is also obsessed with the way numbers works so its always a very well designed and calculated experiment#he even does lab reports for his random experiments and is like look :) I made a new color. do you think I can use this as a pigment?

*sigh* once more having to explain to people that I didn't watch disney or ghibli as a kid, that we had restricted amounts of tv times and usually watched recorded movies with my dad and thus I grew up on the german dub of bud spencer and terence hill movies until we were old enough for the saturday evening crime show (ncis, also, german dub, dinner had to be finished by 20:15) which then became a weekly ritual for like. 2 or 3 years.
#Listen not everyone watched disney or ghibli or cartoons.#We barely watched any tv at all until we were teens#Tv was a holiday special for when we went to my grandparents and only 2h a day while they napped#So we usually just got a bunch of cartoons with 0 context all all.#Random eps of yugioh and pokemon and another show I don't remember the name of#The first movie I remember watching and enjoying as a kid is star wars. I was obsessed. I was 6.#Anyway point is. Stop saying 'everyone has seen it'. It is very ostracising.#No. Not everyone has seen it. Whether that is bc of a lack of interest or a lack of availability doesn't matter.#Do yall have any idea how often I was excluded during middle and high school#Because I wasn't watching as much tv/the same tv as everyone else?#I was watching charmed while everyone else was going on about some stupid reality tv or those singing contests or gntm#And whatever movie was in now.#I got so much hate for enjoying queen or non-german bands and singers.#Not everyone has the same experiences. Pippin is my favorite musical of all time.
But unfortunately, I seem to fixate on it during times of my life when my brain is especially existential, anxious, depressed, etc.
The last few days, I've been thinking about Pippin a lot, reading analyses of it, listening to the music. Just generally enjoying my comfort musical.
Then I remembered that earlier this week, my therapist heard me describing how I feel unfulfilled while unemployed and doing a lot of stuff for other people or to make other people happy and not doing anything for myself, all while having a completely messed up sleep schedule. And she said "Hmm... honestly... that sounds a little like depression."
And I was like "No. No. Because I am doing things. It's not like when I've been depressed in the past." but now that I'm back to fixating on Pippin, I think she was somewhat onto something since that's usually a bad sign. Yay!
#pippin#it's kind of sad that my comfort musical is pippin. but like. it's comforting for a reason. i need the comfort.#i'm currently being overworked by the theater i volunteer with because i was brought on to sew some pieces#and a couple turned into 6 pieces and then adding trims to other things and repairing a bunch of costumes#and completely deconstructing 2 different dresses to make them into new things#and then further alterations and tailoring and yeah this is not what i had signed up for#and how i need to learn to say no because i now have no time to do what i want to do with my free time#plus the jobs i've applied to have not gotten back to me and blah blah blah i'm doing nothing with my life at the moment#and past pippin obsessions have been senior year of high school when i had no clue what to do with my life#into freshman year of college when i was happier but still feeling strange about having no direction#then junior/senior year of college when i once again had no clue what i was doing with my life but about to graduate.#then one year post-college when i was considering leaving my job in the next year-ish to pursue theater#THEN during the really dark era of the quarantine in April just before May hit aka the lowest i've been in over a decade#literally crying every single day i was so stressed and anxious and depressed#and now. after a year of switching jobs. finally thinking i know what i want to do. and now having to actually do it.#while unemployed because my literal dream job that was supposed to last at least 4 months to a year only lasted 2 months

I LOOOOOVE AKISE... ALL TIME FAVE CHARACTER EVERRRRR my 14 year old self was sooooo in love with him you have no idea. i was thriving off the akise-centric manga (thank god his popularity was so good the mangaka decided to make a whole spin off for him its super super fun!)
TBH he probably serves as the basis for a LOT of my fave characters nowadays too. If you're a detective, a white hair character, smart, OR you're going to die, I will glue my eyeballs on you :)

#My memory is horrible and I might be getting things mixed up and out of order but this is roughly what I remember#I believe the first time we met was near the end of freshman year of high school right after finals#I was really obsessed with tf2 at the time and would even bring in my laptop to play video games during lunch.#I believe they saw me playing TF2 or some type of game but I don't exactly remember what we said to each other.#We didn't interact too much after that and went our separate ways until the end of summer#Cut to sophomore year and we have the same class together in English this time#I noticed they brought their handmade TF2 Archimedes plush sitting on their shoulders and I asked if I could pet him#A bunch of things happen afterwards: I get invited to hang out with their friend group during lunch I start getting to know them better.#I won't go into all the details but now we've been best friends for 9 years and still going strong :)
