Editing Your Novel Part 2: The Plot Pass
Okay, it's finally time to edit. You've got all your materials sorted, it's time to dive right in. You want to start with the big edits first, aka the plot pass.
Now listen. You're going to want to linger and fix those little bits of grammar or dialogue, and I know it's so hard not to, but letting yourself get off-track might mean wasting hours on a scene you realize later you have to delete. Fix a few spelling errors, leave a note, and stay plot-focused.
Making Sense (Of the Plot)
In the plot pass, you're asking yourself some basic questions:
Do events follow a clear order? - When you're getting everything down on the page for the first time, scenes might get jumbled up or events might not have clear causes. Maybe you have a car crashing into the cafe pages before, but in a writing haze, you wrote your main characters having a casual conversation moments later. If the bad guy beats your heroes to treasure, is it clear how they got there? (Not everyone can be Yzma.)
Do circumstances feel contrived? If there are any problems that can be solved by your characters sitting down and talking to each other, it may be better to lean into their motivation for not speaking to each other, rather than coming up with bad romcom scenarios. If the plot can be resolved by the mcguffin the grandma had the whole time, it might be better to make finding that mcguffin part of the plot instead.
It doesn't have to be perfect, and you don't have to reinvent the wheel. If someone gets bitten by a werewolf, it's perfectly fine to have them turn into one at the worst possible moment. When it comes to contrived, you're looking for problems that seem easy to solve and look for more interesting ways to complicate them.
Are your character motivations consistent to the characters throughout the story? - They can change throughout the story, but character motivations do need to be linked to the actions they take. An out-of-nowhere betrayal is way more satisfying if you lay the groundwork for it ahead of time.
Take a moment to list out the motivations of the characters in a scene you're not quite sure of can help you figure how to fix it. Having an outline helps with this a lot!
Are you following an "if... then" format? - My brain doesn't work like this when I'm writing, because as a writer you know how A got to Z, and it seems (in your head) obvious how it happened. This is where my scene card outline come in handy, because I can look at my overview of what should happen and why, and then compare it to what actually happens in the scene. I've discovered so many threads I forgot to connect that way, like why a character had a certain device (I forgot to have him pick it up two scenes earlier), or adding a few simmering dialogue bits that make the big fight pay off much better.
Can you fix the "Because the Plot Demands It" scenes? - Look, sometimes your character needs to be in that haunted house to see that damn ghost, but your character isn't the type to set foot in such a place. It's really easy, especially in the first draft, to contrive a way in there (she took a wrong turn on her way to grandma's!), but retooling these scenes to connect them to the characters motivations and needs is the way to go. The main character doesn't want to go into that obviously cursed place, but her best friend hasn't shown up for school in three days and now she's crying for help from the second floor window. Your character's strong desire to be there for her friend is a much better way to get her into that house.
This is not always easy - it took me six fricken drafts to realize a critical part of a character's motivation was because his father blamed him for his mother's death - but it is going to be worth putting in the work to hammer down.
Do you have a solid timeline? - This might not seem as important, but it's super easy to accidentally fit two weeks worth of activities in three days. Make sure you have that on reference, even if you don't mention it in the book. Also make sure to gauge your distances if your characters are on a trip, because if you do accidentally say it takes two hours to drive from Seattle to Spokane instead of five, someone will dive down your throat for it. Not me. Just someone.
Okay, maybe me. Slow down, you maniacs.
Next post we'll dive into the structure pass. See you then!

mon ange (CL16)
Tumblr media
✰ charles leclerc x !childhoodbestfriend !raceengineer reader ✰
summary: you've been there for charles since day one, even when you think he doesn't notice it, you're always there. supporting him from the sidelines.
wc: 1.6k
genre: lots of angst, drabble
aria's note: short but angsty draft i've had since last year. only gotten around to editing and posting now. not sure if i'll ever extend this or do a part 2, HAHAH. this is also written in third person bc it was from so long ago. no mentions of y/n either. enjoy the angst masochists <3 (also mon ange means my angel)
Tumblr media
“are you ready?”
she stopped staring out into the open and finally looked at her colleague, head was elsewhere.
she gave a brief smile, and a nod and the race commenced.
race engineer, not a bad title right?
her mind wanders off a tiny bit to the past as the cars raced off into the distance.
“when i’m old enough, i’m going to race for the top teams in the world!” she could hear charles’ big laugh as she was sitting on the grass.
transported back in time, they were spending time with each other, just the two of them. it was a normal occasion for them to just sit in the dark, together sharing laughs and stories after a karting race.
she just looked over fondly at charles as he zoomed around, pretending he was in his kart, “did you see me, mon ange? i was zooming like this— and WHOOSH, i was like this!”
she cocked an eyebrow, “are you sure? i thought you crashed into a wall,” she joked, pretending she wasn’t there but she was there for every moment of the race. not wanting to miss her best friend’s races.
she was his biggest supporter and he knew it.
time flashes again as you two have your first big argument.
“you don’t get it!” charles yelled as he turned his back to her, “you will never get the pressure of any of this! you just tell me what’s good for me and you never understand! you’re not my anything! you don’t mean anything to me!” as those words left his lips, he instantly regretted it.
he turned around to face her.
the look of hurt on her as she began to turn around and walk off without a singular word, “i didn’t mean it! i didn’t mean it!” charles follows her, tears start streaming down her face. she only wanted what was good for him, racing was taking a toll on him and he didn’t realize it but the more she cared, the more she felt like he pushed her away.“i swear, i didn’t mean it. please-!” he begged as he grabbed her wrist, finally turning her around to see her tear-streaked face, flushed with hurt and anger, “i’m sorry, i’m sorry,” he repeated again and again as he took her into his arms, patting her head as they embraced each other.
“racing has changed you, charles…” she mumbles, sniffling.
“ever since ferrari took you under their wing…”
“i-i haven’t changed… it’s just the stress from all these people and all these investors wanting to see me win-“
“and it’s changed you,” she had said, eyes still red from the crying, speaking the term of endearment softly, “you are no longer the soft and kind-hearted charles i knew before all of this happened.”
“maybe it’s best if i stayed away.”
and as her flashback ended, she heard charles speak on the radio, “radio check,” he mutters, trying to focus on his race but still wanting to hear her voice after what happened earlier between the two of them.
“loud and clear,” she replied back as she monitored the first few laps of his race, she couldn’t help but let her mind wander off again towards their childhood.
after their big argument, she did distance herself away from charles but never missing his races. always there, even though she didn’t make it obvious or even told him that she was coming.
she was still his #1 biggest supporter, he just didn’t know it anymore.
podium after podium turned into win after win and she was there to witness it all.
she distanced herself from charles and he didn’t even try to stop it. it was like he meant what he said when they last spoke to each other.
she didn’t mean anything to him.
but god, did he mean something to her.
her mom had told her countless of times to just go up and talk to him after his race win but she knew to keep her distance. it had been a few months since she had last talked to him, it’d be useless to come up to him now but she made it her life’s mission to continue supporting him from the sidelines. she had dedicated her life to become a ferrari race engineer, one day be his race engineer.
she didn’t notice it either, but charles knew. he knew she was always there to support him, he knew she cared.
he would give anything to just come up to her and just hug her, apologizing a million times but he didn’t want to force her to talk to him when she wasn’t ready.
“hello? is everything alright there?” charles’ voice comes through the radio, she snaps out of it before replying, “yeah sorry…” she silently cursed herself before paying attention to the monitor, realizing what he had asked, for positions and plans, “sainz is behind you. try to keep pace and defend each other,” she had spoke softly as charles listened closely.
following her orders, and finally focusing on the rest of the race, she helped them win a double podium.
she was so proud of the two drivers, she watched from the garage as they celebrated at the stage with the rest of the ferrari crew.
her mind wandered off to their earlier argument.
“all i’m saying is that you have to take care of yourself, get yourself a new hobby,” she had started, “circulating your whole life around racing isn’t healthy—“
“i am nothing without racing!”
“yes, you are a beautiful person without racing, you just have to realize that.”
“no one will love me without racing!”
“i have always loved you even before racing…”
“you know nothing! you have always been like this! since we were kids,” charles threw words at her, eyes sharp, unforgiving, “you always tell me what’s best for me like you know me so well— we haven’t talked to each other in years! what do you know what’s good for me???” he growled as she stayed silent, she shouldn’t have opened her mouth in the first place.
she felt defeated and just sighed and muttered out, “i’m sorry, okay? it won’t happen again,” quietly as she left the hotheaded charles, he always regretted what he said when he was mad to her, ever since he started racing, the anger was uncontrollable. the amount of hurtful words he’s thrown at her was unforgivable at that point.
she was snapped back into reality as she realized that the interview session was over and everyone was retreating for the night, the event was finally over.
her brain was on autopilot the entire day, not being able to focus properly and she wanted to be the first one out of there, she packed her things as she saw the others coming over from their celebration as they talked about going to the party being held by ferrari in a club reserved just for them.
she she was grabbing her things to go, she felt a hand on her shoulder, charles.
“hey,” charles smiled apologetically at her as she packed her stuff, she only glanced at him for a little bit before continuing to gather her stuff, “do you want to come to the celebration with me?”
she shakes her head, “i’m quite tired,” she says simply before finally having all of her stuff and walking away, but charles caught up towards her, “i’m sorry.”
“it’s okay, i forgive you,” she says quietly as she continues walking, she was used to it at this point, charles getting mad at her because she said something that he didn't like and she just took it, but he didn’t want her to go away.
he wanted to talk to her.
“stop walking away, let’s talk, please,” he pleaded as she stopped walking, back still facing towards him, she just couldn’t when it came to him, “what is there to talk about, leclerc?” she asked as she turned around, “you said sorry, and i said i forgive you. there’s nothing to talk about.”
charles felt guilty, she just looked so defeated. so different to the person he knew before shit happened between them.
“i’m sorry for everything, i’m sorry,” he breathes out, he was holding his breath? was he nervous?
“it’s okay, leclerc,” she nods as she tries to walk away again before being held back again by the wrist from a clearly emotional charles.
“it hurts when you do that,” he had a hurt tone to his voice, tears threatening to fall from his pretty green eyes, “when you call me by my last name.”
“everyone calls you that.”
“you’re not just anyone.”
“i feel like just everyone.”
“what happened to nounours?”
“we’re not kids anymore.”
“but you are still mon ange.”
she couldn’t reply back, she hasn’t heard that nickname in so long.
“i love you.”
he choked up, he let his tears out. she didn’t say a peep.
“please say something.”
“what is there to say?” she looked at the ground, away from his eyes. she knew she loved him, more than anything ever since they were kids.
she just didn’t know if she could forgive him even though she had said it earlier.
“tell me you love me,” charles was almost begging, holding onto her hands, “even if you’re lying, just say it back.”
“i love you too,” she knew better than anyone that it wasn’t a lie, it was the furthest thing from a lie, but she didn’t want to appear weak, “is that all? can i go now?”
with those four last words, charles’ heart broke into tiny little pieces.

Images began spreading unlike anything the media had ever really expected. They were all of you and Luigi. Well, really, how could anyone be angry about it? You were both beautiful. Something about the way you looked together was… unlike anyone had seen before
Although, the reason why these pictures were circulating so freely now was… not as wonderful. Luigi had finally been arrested.
There were reporters waiting outside your home now, hoping to catch a glimpse of you, a statement even. They were shameless, really. And the public wasn’t any better, really. Or more so… your coworkers.
You called off of work, even though you weren’t sure if your bank account would appreciate the act of self-preservation. The news had caught wind of your chat with the detectives.
People began to see you as a saint. Others saw you as a liar, even more believed you to be pitiful. You sounded small, desperate even. But they knew for a fact that someone who managed to get a ring from Luigi Mangione would protect him to the ends of the earth.
Regardless of what others believed for you, it was as if your life had truly, finally, fallen apart. You cried upon hearing the news. You didn’t cry because you hadn’t wanted him to get caught. No, you cried because you knew that regardless of the outcome of the court trial, your lives wouldn’t be the same.
That was clear to you because a clip of yours surfaced. It wasn’t yours so to speak, it was one that his sister filmed and you posted to your social medias. The day he proposed.
“Lu, where are we going!” You shouted, giggles falling from your lips as he pulled you ahead of his family. It seemed like he had a sudden surge of energy, grabbing you by your hand as you guys arrived at the park. It was the park he asked your out. It was his sisters idea to take a walk after family dinner.
He suddenly stopped, sending you crashing into him. He laughed as he held you up, steadying your footing. Despite your confusion, you couldn’t help but smile with him. He pressed his lips tenderly against yours. You smiled, hiding your face from his family, who was slowly catching up to you.
“What are you-” You began asking, watching him slowly get down on one knee. You swore you could feel your heart skip too many beats to be medically normal. “Oh, my god.”
Your hands shot up to your mouth as he smiled, opening up the small black box in his hand. Your heart was now beginning to beat out of your chest. Tears began filling your eyes, his only mirroring yours as he opened his mouth to speak.
He spoke your name like it was meant to be said by his lips only, “You are the love of my life. I couldn’t imagine spending the last four years with anyone else. I mean, you’ve been with me through so much and never once complained,” His voice and hands shook as he spoke. Even when he seemed so unsure of his words, his eyes told you everything. He already knew your answer. “I know you’re too good for me, but I can’t possibly imagine spending the rest of my life with anyone else. So… will you marry me?”
You let out a sob, unable to muster up any words. You could only nod, letting him shakily slip the ring onto your finger. His family began cheering at the sight. He smiled as a tear fell past his cheek. He stood up, engulfing you in a hug. The sheer strength in his hold told you that he more than loved you. It felt like you could live in eachothers skin. He spun you around, happiness and excitement gushing from both of you.
You let out a watery giggle, “I love you.”
“I love you more,” He said, holding your face in hands before kissing you deeply. You both melted into the kiss, salty tears mingling between your lips.
You still remember that day like yesterday. Watching it from another perspective was just as emotional. Or maybe it was because that time felt like another lifetime. Or maybe because it was being used in edits with the song "Young and Beautiful" by Lana Del Rey.

I've had this in my drafts for a while. but it felt appropriate to continue it now for some reason. 🤷🏽‍♀️ -nony

His Eyes on Me: Part Three
Masterlist/Part One-Part Two
Summary: The summer festival is in full swing, Natalie and Lacey try to encourage her to talk to Benny. She gets some practice later on in the day.
A/n: This chapter went through SOOOOO many drafts and edits. I'm so glad to get it out of my sight and excited to see your guys' response because yah girl over here could not STAWP gigglin'
The sound of our laughter echoed lightly around us, and the sweetness of vanilla ice cream melted on my tongue as I half-listened to Natalie and Lacey giving me what they called “The Benny Crash Course.”
It was their latest attempt to prepare me for any future run-ins with the guy who’d been on my mind a little too much since we’d met. Every day since our awkward first encounter, my thoughts had drifted back to his piercing blue eyes and the calm way he’d answered my question, like he had no problem just staring at me. It was disarming, to say the least.
"Next time you see him, talk to him," Natalie urged, her eyes serious but her lips twitching with a smirk. "Just be your normal, funny self. You’ll be fine."
I couldn’t help but snort into my ice cream, leaning forward and shrugging with exaggerated comical disbelief. “Or I could… you know… run away? Worked last time.”
Lacey burst out laughing, nearly spilling her own ice cream. “No, no! Talk. You will use words,” she teased, giving me a dramatic point with her spoon, her expression all mock seriousness.
I straightened up, tapping my chin thoughtfully as if considering something very serious. “Or…” I drawled, leaning back with a mischievous grin, “I could not talk to him. Save myself the embarrassment. That sounds pretty ideal.”
Both Natalie and Lacey stopped in their tracks, giving me the most synchronized deadpan expression I’d ever seen. “Absolutely not,” they said in perfect unison, their matching glares enough to make me crack up.
I sighed and playfully threw my hands up in surrender. “I don’t know, pretending he doesn’t exist seems like the best plan. Ignoring problems always works, right?”
Lacey shook her head, barely containing a smile. “Oh yeah, because pretending a tall, handsome guy who’s clearly into you isn’t real? Great strategy"
Natalie was a bit more direct. “You’re doing that thing again—acting like you’re not interested when we both know you’ve been thinking about him.”
I shot her a half-hearted glare but couldn’t hold back the smile tugging at my lips. They weren’t wrong, as much as I hated to admit it. “He makes me nervous"
“Sweet pea,” Lacey said, sidling up beside me and throwing an arm over my shoulder, “it’s okay to be nervous but trust me. The next time you see Benny, you’ll be fine. Just don’t run away like you did last time.”
Our conversation faded as we walked aound the park. Hopping around as we enjoyed the summer sun and the activities the festival offered. The park was alive with excitement—bright lights strung up along the trees, the sound of a live band playing upbeat tunes, and the sweet smell of cotton candy and caramel wafting through the air. The whole scene felt like something out of a postcard, the kind of night where you could forget about everything else and just get lost in the moment. Lacey and Natalie had wandered off to check out one of the game booths, and I had strayed from them, my eye on the cotton candy stand at the edge of the festival.
My stomach growling at the sight of the pink, fluffy treat. The line had dwindled, and as I stepped up, I fumbled around in my purse for some change. Of course, everything but money seemed to surface—lipstick, an old movie ticket, gum wrappers. I sighed in frustration, digging deeper as the vendor waited patiently. The music from the band drifted through the warm night air, and I could hear people laughing and enjoying the festival behind me.
Just as I found the coins I was searching for, someone slid in beside me. The movement was so casual, like they had been standing there all along, but it caught me off guard. Their chest brushed against the back of my shoulder, and I froze as the scent of cologne, leather, and cigarettes hit me all at once. It was familiar, intoxicating in a way that sent my heart into overdrive before I even looked up.
I knew who it was before I turned my head. Benny.
Benny didn’t say anything as I looked up at him, his expression unreadable, and cool. My brows furrowed slightly, caught off guard by the sight of him in a place like this. He didn’t seem like the type to be at a festival—too rough around the edges, too… out of place in a crowd full of families and kids. I hadn’t expected a guy like him to show up somewhere so bright, so cheerful. He didn’t exactly blend into the backdrop of laughter and neon lights. He dropped coins into the vendor's hands.
My eyes flickered to the vendor, who was holding out the cotton candy I’d ordered. His hand was expectant, and I blinked, shaking myself out of my thoughts. With a quick smile, I mumbled a quiet, “Thanks,” to the vendor and grabbed the candy, stepping away as I tried to maneuver around Benny.
“Thanks for paying,” I added quietly, not daring to look up at him as I said it. My voice came out a little too soft, the words awkward and uncertain. Something about him made me feel disoriented like I couldn’t quite think straight when he was this close. I tried to draw some encouragement from Lacey's earlier words, you'll be fine, just don't run.
Without a word, Benny fell into step beside me, moving as if it were the most natural thing in the world. His hand settled gently on my lower back, a touch so casual, so familiar like it had always been there. My heart raced at the contact, a mix of confusion and nerves surging through me. Why was he even bothering? He didn’t know me—not really—but he sure acted like he did.
I could feel the warmth of his hand through the thin fabric of my dress, and it made it hard to focus on anything but the steady thrum of my pulse. I didn’t understand what he wanted—why he was even here, walking with me like we had some kind of history. It felt… strange. And yet, I couldn’t bring myself to pull away.
I stopped walking, turning slightly so I could glance up at him, my heart still pounding in my chest. “Why are you here?” I asked, the question slipping out before I could stop it. It wasn’t accusatory, just… curious. I couldn’t figure him out. Benny seemed like the kind of guy who belonged in smoky bars or speeding down empty highways, not standing beside me at a festival, surrounded by kids and balloons.
He looked down at me, his gaze steady, cool as ever, but he didn’t answer right away. The silence stretched out, the sounds of the festival fading into the background as we stood there, just the two of us, the world shrinking around us.
Finally, he spoke, his voice soft but tinged with amusement. “I could ask you the same thing.”
His words hung in the air, and I hesitated for a moment, the weight of his gaze making my stomach flutter. A small part of me wanted to retreat, to let the nerves win and shy away. But instead, I found myself pushing through, the edges of a playful smile tugging at my lips. You'll be fine...
“Well,” I said, my voice trying for cheeky but betraying a bit of my nerves, “I’m wondering what a big tough biker guy like you is doing at a festival. Not exactly your scene, right?”
The moment the words left my mouth, I felt a surge of both relief and anxiety. I’d said it—teasing him, pushing back a little, trying not to get lost in my nerves. But still, I couldn’t shake the rush of heat that crept up my neck, the way my heart thudded against my ribs as I waited for him to respond.
Benny’s lips twitched into the faintest hint of a smile, and his hand, still resting lightly on my back, pressed just a bit more firmly.
“Maybe I just like cotton candy,” he said, his voice low and teasing, that playful glint in his eyes making my heart skip a beat.
I let out a soft laugh, shaking my head. “No, try again,” I said, my nerves starting to fade as I tilted my head slightly, my eyes twinkling as I looked at him.
Benny’s smile widened, just a little, but enough to show me he was enjoying this just as much as I was. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping an octave, his breath warm against my ear as he spoke again. “No,” he repeated slowly, his eyes locked on mine. “I didn’t want you slipping through my fingers again.”
My breath hitched at his words, my heart racing, but the smile on my face didn’t falter. I bowed my head attempting to hide away from his eyes.
“You’re cute when you’re nervous,” Benny said, his voice low, teasing, but with an edge that made my heart flutter.
The words sent a jolt through me, my cheeks flushing a deep pink before I could even think of how to respond. I tried to play it off, brush it aside, but the warmth spreading across my face was undeniable. The familiar nervous energy surged inside me, and an embarrassed giggle slipped out before I could stop it. Instinctively, I raised a hand to cover my face, as if that would somehow hide how completely flustered I felt.
His gaze—intense, unwavering—was too much. Too close. The way his words lingered between us left my mind spinning and struggling to catch up. I let out a soft laugh, more to relieve the tension in my chest than anything, and spun on my heels, desperately trying to regain some semblance of composure.
But Benny wasn’t about to let me slip away that easily.
I heard his footsteps behind me—steady, deliberate, as if he knew there was no point in rushing. Within moments, his long strides caught up with mine effortlessly, and suddenly he was beside me again, walking in step with me like it was the most natural thing in the world. His presence was magnetic, pulling me in despite my best efforts to distance myself. The space between us felt heavy, charged with something unspoken but impossible to ignore.
“You’re runnin' away again?” he asked, amusement dancing in his voice.
I shook my head, laughing softly despite the fact that my heart was still racing in my chest. I glanced over at him, the teasing smile still lingering on my lips. “What? A tough guy like you can’t handle a good chase?” I raised an eyebrow, adjusting my grip on the cotton candy, trying to keep my voice steady despite the wild fluttering of butterflies in my stomach.
Benny’s smirk deepened, and his eyes glinted with that playful spark that always made me feel both nervous and excited at the same time. “Oh, I can handle it,” he said, his voice low, smooth, as he stepped a little closer. “But you’re not making it much of a chase.”
His words sent a shiver down my spine, and I could feel the warmth of his body brushing against mine as we walked. Our steps fell perfectly in sync.
I laughed again, there was something so intoxicating about the way he moved beside me, the way he spoke, the way he looked at me.
“Now that you mention it,” I said, tapping my chin thoughtfully, trying to regain some control over the situation, “I think it’s about time for me to run away again. Catch me later?”
I flashed him a playful smile, my heart still pounding as I looked up at him through my lashes. It was a half-joke, half-challenge, and I could feel the heat rise in my cheeks again.
Benny’s smirk widened, his eyes darkening with something that sent my heart racing even faster. “You can try,” he murmured, his voice soft but sure, his gaze locking onto mine with that quiet intensity that made it feel like time had slowed down.
I swallowed hard, my breath catching in my throat as his words settled over me. I glanced down at the cotton candy in my hand, suddenly hyperaware of everything—the warmth radiating off him, the way our steps still moved in perfect harmony, and the fact that, deep down, I didn’t want to run. Not really.
“So what?” I stopped, turning to face him fully, standing even closer now. My heart pounded in my chest, but I didn’t pull away. “You gonna follow me around all night”
Benny stepped closer, his chest nearly brushing against mine, his gaze never wavering. His hand hovered near my arm, not quite touching, but close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from him. My breath hitched as his presence filled the small space between us.
“Maybe,” he said, his voice softer now, lower, the teasing lilt fading into something more serious, more deliberate. “If that’s what it takes to keep you from running.”
"You're serious" The weight of his words dawning on me. I laughed, "Why would you waste your time following me around?"
His lips curled into that familiar smirk, but it was softer this time, more genuine. “Who says it’s a waste of time?” he replied smoothly, his voice low and calm, like he had the whole thing figured out and was just waiting for me to catch on.
My heart was pounding so loud I was sure he could hear it. The air around us had shifted, pulling us closer together, and I couldn’t help but imagine what it would feel like if I leaned in just a little more if I closed the distance between us. My eyes flickered to his lips for the briefest second before I caught myself, but not quickly enough.
Benny noticed. Of course, he noticed. His smirk softened into something more real, more genuine, and his gaze held mine, steady and unwavering. My face flushed again, and I glanced down at the cotton candy in my hand, trying to gather my thoughts.
“What if I said ‘please, don’t follow me?’” I asked, tilting my head and biting my lip, hoping he’d let me off the hook. But Benny just chuckled, a low, warm sound that vibrated through me, shaking his head as if the very idea was amusing.
I laughed nervously, looking away from him and back at the carnival lights, trying to find some relief from the tension building between us. “You’re somethin’ else, you know that?” I muttered, shaking my head.
Benny just shrugged, effortlessly calm, like he had all the time in the world. “Maybe.”
“So what, you follow me all night,” I continued, turning back to him, still caught up in the strange, magnetic pull of this moment. “And then what? How does that end?” I asked, my voice soft, curious, but underneath, there was something else—a question I didn’t know how to fully ask.
He didn’t answer right away, silence thick with anticipation.
“Guess we’ll have to find out,” he finally said, his voice soft but firm, the promise of something more hidden in those words.
“No,” I said, my voice soft but steady, a smile curling at my lips as I shook my head. “Can we skip the whole following me around thing and just get to the point?”
For a split second, something shifted in Benny’s expression. Maybe it was surprise, or amusement, but it quickly faded into that calm, confident look he always wore. He stepped closer, and I held my breath, fighting the urge to run away.
His voice dropped, low and rough, like gravel under a boot. “Get to the point, huh?” His eyes flickered to my lips for just a beat before locking back onto mine, his gaze unwavering. “And what exactly do you think the point is, peach?”
The intensity of his stare, the unspoken implication behind his words, sent a rush through me that I wasn’t prepared for. My mind blanked, and for a second, I couldn’t think. His presence, his closeness, the way he was looking at me—it all felt like too much and not enough at the same time.
I glanced around, trying to gather my thoughts, the carnival lights blurring in my peripheral vision. My feet rocked slightly as I shifted my weight, searching for the words, for anything that wouldn’t make me seem completely out of my depth. But all I could do was feel the charge between us, my pulse racing in time with the chaos swirling in my chest.
“I don’t know,” I finally said, my voice breathy, my heart pounding harder as I looked back at him. A grin slowly spread across my lips, my pulse daring me to play along, to push back against the tension. “But I hope you can keep up.”
Before he could respond, I turned on my heel, my grin widening as I dashed into the crowd, slipping through the throngs of people. The sound of carnival games and laughter swirled around me as I moved, my adrenaline spiking with every step. I didn’t dare look back, but I could feel the heat of his gaze on me, feel the thrill of whether or not he’d follow.
A part of me hoped he would.
As I weaved through the crowd, the lights flickering overhead, I could feel my heart still pounding, a rush of excitement buzzing through my veins.
-
“YOU RAN AWAY AGAIN!” Lacey screeched, her voice echoing through the living room. I shrunk deeper into the couch, my cheeks burning as I fidgeted with my fingers, trying to suppress a giggle.
“…maybe,” I muttered, unable to keep the smile from spreading. But the memory of darting away from Benny had me both embarrassed and oddly excited.
“This is no laughing matter!” Lacey was losing it now, pacing in front of me like a storm about to break. “YOU LITERALLY HAD HIM RIGHT THERE, AND YOU RAN!”
Natalie, far less dramatic, swung her feet lazily in the air as she lay on the floor flipping through a magazine. Without even glancing up, she smirked and said, “I bet he’ll tie you down next time he sees you.”
I bit my lip, my stomach doing a flip at the thought. “That’s not... no, he wouldn’t,” I protested, but the way my pulse quickened at the idea told a different story.
Lacey stopped pacing long enough to level me with an incredulous look. “Oh, he absolutely would. After the stunt you pulled? I don’t think he’s going to let you slip away so easily next time.”
I hugged a pillow to my chest, my mind racing back to the way Benny had looked at me, the way he’d closed the space between us with just a look, how he was right there, and I still ran. “I panicked,” I mumbled, more to myself than to them.
“You panicked?” Lacey threw her hands up. “Girl, if he had looked at me like that, I’d have thanked him.”
Natalie chuckled from her spot on the floor. “I think you liked running. Adds to the chase.” She shot me a knowing look, and I sank further into the couch, burying my face in the pillow.
Maybe she was right.

The sassy lean against the wall ™️
You raise your comm to your lips. "Are we ready?"
Hardcase's hushed voice answers. "Yep. Target is in place. I wanted to watch but someone won’t let me out of the medbay.” Hardcase sighs.
Kix groans frustratedly in the background.
“‘Case, you got thrown twenty feet and you have a concussion. That’s plenty of reason for me to keep you here.”
“That might backfire on you, Vod.” Jesse snickers.
Kix echoes Jesse mockingly and Hardcase signs off with “good luck” while you peek into the mess hall where the rest of Torrent is.
The 501st are on a mission to Naboo, but temporary barracks have been set up to accommodate the troopers planetside, allowing them to enjoy the rich scenery and culture.
Dogma and Echo sit off to the side, having a conversation about something while Tup and Vaughn play Sabbacc with the very person that you came to see. Fives’ back is turned to the door as you slip quietly inside and make your way to the table, draping yourself over his shoulders.
With a smirk, you coo into his ear. "Hey there, stranger. Mind if I crash here for a bit?"
He turns to face you, cards forgotten on the table.
“Mesh’la? What are you doing here?”
You giggle. “Nice to see you too. Can’t I surprise my boyfriend?”
He smiles and tugs you into his arms, nuzzling his face in your neck and breathing deeply. Sure, it’s probably a dumb idea to go soft in front of his brothers, but they’re no one to judge either.
Besides, it is you; his cyar’ika.
“You came all the way out here to see me?” He asks, placing a lazy kiss to the side of your neck.
“Yeah, I did. Senator Amidala owed me a favor so I figured I’d come see you.” You say, gently tugging his hand so he follows. After bidding farewell to his brothers, the two of you retreat to a terrace away from prying eyes.
As soon as the two of you are out of sight, his lips crash against yours, needy and passionate. You return the kiss, tangling your fingers in his hair. He mumbles how much he loves you against your mouth, arms tugging you closer still. You’re inherently grateful that he isn’t wearing the top half of his armor, enjoying the warmth of his chest.
You couldn’t ask for anything more as you relax in your trooper’s arms and watch the sun set over the water.
You sigh contentedly. “I missed you.”
Fives tucks his chin over your head and squeezes you tightly. “Missed you more. This is nice.”
You hum happily in response, leaning your head on his shoulder.
“The senator got me a suite at a hotel. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if I had I dunno, say...a bodyguard?” You smirk, relishing in the groan that rumbles through his chest.
“I’m afraid I’d be a little too preoccupied with something else to be your security detail.”
“The closer you are, the safer I am,” You tease.
“Well then,” He says playfully, picking you up easily. “Where exactly is this hotel?”

Tumblr media
"Kate Bishop, if you touch that volume button again, I swear to god I will kick your ass so hard it flies out your fucking mouth."
Kate freezes with her hand on the dial, looking guilty as hell. "But it's so quiettttt." She had been blasting Mother Mother for the past ten minutes until Yelena's brain had exploded and she turned it down- she couldn't handle listening to it the entire drive to Clint's place. The morning had already been overstimulating enough.
Yelena pins her with a stare when they reach a red light. "I'm the one driving, which means I'm in control of the volume, if not the music. Hands off."
The archer pouts and slumps back in her seat, folding her arms over her chest. "You had the aux cord when I was driving yesterday," she whines.
"You didn't fight me for it," Yelena points out. She reaches over and cups Kate's chin, pulling her girlfriend's face close to press a soft kiss against her lips. "Cheer up, little hawk. You can have it on the way home."
Kate's demeanor immediately brightens, and she presses forward to kiss Yelena a little harder, holding it for a moment even after the light turns green and the car behind them honks. Yelena breaks off and presses on the gas frantically, her cheeks burning, and Kate laughs softly.
"You're so cute when you blush, baby," she says, leaning her chin in her palm to stare at her girlfriend's side profile as she drives their little Mitsubishi.
Yelena's grin is wide and bright, albeit shy. "Shut the fuck up, Kate Bishop," she says lovingly.
"I love youuuu, Lena."
"I love you too, stupid."
Kate settles back in her seat, rather satisfied with herself as she watches the snowy road go by. It was a little early for them to get snow, but a freak storm had blown in last night and iced the roads over, and Kate wasn't going to complain either way. She thought it was pretty.
"What if I turn your song on? Then can it be louder?" she asks after a couple minutes, the last notes of Hayloft fading out.
Yelena purses her lips in thought. "I suppose so," she concedes. Kate hums and pulls her phone out to find American Pie on Spotify and happily turns the volume back up.
They both sing and dance along once the lyrics start, and Kate's cheeks hurt with how much she's smiling when she replays the song. Yelena always straightens up a bit more to this music specifically, and the way she seems to glow as she dances to it makes butterflies erupt in Kate's stomach.
"You're beautiful- you know?" Kate mutters, watching Yelena with soft eyes. The blonde grins again and turns to her girlfriend at another red light, pulling her close once more to press a searing kiss to her mouth.
"And you, Kate Bishop, are very charming." She reaches a hand up to cup the archer's cheek and kisses her deeper, smoothing her thumb along her strong jawline.
Kate grins into Yelena's lips, and leans back again with a content sigh when the light turns green. They would be at Clint's in about ten minutes. "Thanks, Lena. I try."
A soft chuckle. "You're beautiful too, detka."
Kate blushes despite herself and gives a happy sigh. "God, I am so gay. This is so gay. We're so gay. I love being a lesbian."
Yelena barks a laugh this time. "I would hope so, Kate Bishop! We've been dating for six years." Even as she says it, she's consciously aware of the ring box in her left pocket, heavy and waiting. Her heart glows, and another smile has her dimples popping out.
"What's the grin for?" Kate asks, poking at Yelena's cheek.
"Just excited to see Wanda and Natasha." The two women had twins just a few months ago before they moved back from New York, so neither Yelena or Kate had been able to meet the new baby boys. They were staying with Clint and Laura's family until they found a new house, probably somewhere in Ohio.
Kate coos loudly, squishing her own cheeks. "Oh my goodness, I'm so excited to meet Billy and Tommy. The pictures they sent are so darling- I'm gonna die, Lena."
Her girlfriend reaches a hand over to squeeze her thighs. "Do you think you'd ever want kids, Kate Bishop?" They had talked about their future over and over before, but now with the two of them having a set of new nephews, the option of a family felt more real.
Kate twines their fingers together and lifts Yelena's hand to kiss her scarred knuckles. "As long as they're with you, Yelena."
"God- you really are cheesy." The assassin is still blushing furiously either way, and she marvels at how well Kate is able to turn her all gooey even after crushing on her for years and years.
"I can't help it," Kate says cheekily.
"No, god, you really can't, can you? You'd probably keel over and die if you ever tried to be serious for once in your life."
Kate punches her shoulder lightly and leans over the center console to smack a wet kiss on her girlfriend's cheek. "Shut up, loser."
Yelena just cackles and turns to the archer. "You know I'm right!"
"Yeah, yeah." Kate hums a laugh and settles into her seat, gazing out the window. "I love the snow."
"I know, darling."
"Maybe we can take the twins sledding."
"We can't take four-month-olds into this weather, Kate Bishop. They'll get sick."
"Booooo."
"Dummy."
"Asshole."
"Fucker."
Kate grins. "Damn right I am."
"Kate!" Yelena's jaw drops, and her face is absolutely blazing. Her girlfriend just cackles.
"You sure weren't complaining last night when I used the new str-"
"Kate Bishop! Shut up! I'm trying to drive!" Yelena can feel her stomach pooling with heat, which is rather distracting when she's trying to navigate their car over icy roads.
Kate gives a shit-eating grin and waggles her eyebrows. "I brought it with me in my bag."
Yelena's skin feels like it's being torched, and her jaw drops so hard she swears she can feel it hit the seat under her as she whips her head away from the road to glare dumbly at Kate "You what?!"
Except that there's a patch of black ice right in front of their car, and when she takes her eyes off of the road, the tires choose to go skidding right at that moment.
It happens too fast.
Kate is shouting, reaching over to Yelena. The assassin's hands are wrenching frantically at the wheel, and there's a truck horn blaring from all directions- one second, two, and then a screeching crash erupts around them.
The world goes black.
——
Yelena's head feels like a horse is kicking into it repeatedly, and something hot and sticky is dripping into her eye as she slowly comes to. The pavement is scorching beneath her hands, digging into the flesh of her raw palms that have been scraped open on the road. She groans and blinks fruitlessly, each action slamming lighting into her brain.
What the fuck just happened?
Her legs are twisted uncomfortably underneath her, but as she regains enough consciousness to assess the rest of her body, she concludes that nothing is numb to the point of paralysis, probably due to the adrenaline flooding her system.
Where's Kate?
A spike of strength spears through her, and Yelena shoves herself to her shaking feet, biting back a scream and wrapping an arm around her torso when her ribs wrench with pain. The burning wreckage of the car crash in front of her is horrific- she doubles over her bleeding knees and empties her stomach on the pavement when she sees it.
Their car is completely demolished, with the truck that slammed into them not looking that much better, and Yelena is sick for a second time when she spots the damage done to her driver's side. She should be dead. How is she not dead?
Where is Kate?
Yelena opens her mouth to call for her girlfriend but chokes as blood floods over her tongue, and she realizes with a dull pang of horror that she bit into it in the collision so hard that the flow of sticky red is almost gushing.
A problem for later.
She forces the pain away and frantically stumbles closer to the crash, legs shrieking. "Kate!" she screams out, her mouth on fire as blood continues to sputter from her lips. "Kate!"
The car is in flames, and oil and gasoline are dripping dangerously from the twisted metal. "Kate! Please!"
There.
She spots her girlfriend as fire starts to crawl towards her, and Yelena lets out a wail as she forces her legs to go faster. The archer is sprawled out awkwardly on her belly with her cheek pressed into the pavement, blood pooling underneath her head and legs. Shallow breaths are pushing at her chest, but they're wet and raspy.
Yelena can feel the sobs shaking her own body, but sound has begun to fade from her senses, and all she knows is the heat of Kate's blood on her hands as she scrambles to pick the unconscious woman up. Kate's body is a dead weight over her shoulders. Yelena drags the two of them as far away from the crash as she can, and when they reach a spot of snowy grass on the side of the road, she's distantly aware of frantic voices and the wailing of sirens.
"Kate," she sobs, dropping herself and her girlfriend down into the snow. Red immediately begins to stain it. The archer has not stirred, and when Yelena sees the damage down to her face and head, she's sick for a third time. Her head spins mercilessly.
"Please, no."
But Kate is still breathing, so Yelena curls herself around her girlfriend and moans at the pain throbbing through her body.
"Kate Bishop, please. Please."
The ambulance cannot come fast enough.
——
Natasha is there when Yelena wakes up in the hospital, and she stares at her older sister for a few seconds before the redhead realizes she's awake.
"Oh, Yelena," she murmurs, getting out of her chair and hurrying to the side of Yelena's bed, leaning over her to hug her carefully.
"Tasha," Yelena whimpers, reaching out for her sister. Her entire body is aching mercilessly, but the pain dulls once she's wrapped in the love of her family.
Natasha holds her close and gets onto the hospital cot with her sister, brushing a hand through her tangled hair and kissing a bandage on her forehead. "What happened?" she asks softly.
Yelena's eyes immediately well up with tears, her face twisting painfully. "I got distracted, Tasha. There was a truck. And then I- I woke up on the road, and Kate-" She screws her eyes shut, a sob building painfully in her chest. "Is Kate okay, Tasha? Is my Kate Bishop okay?"
Natasha sucks in a breath, and Yelena's heart stops for a moment. "She still hadn't woken up by the time the ambulance got you guys here, and she's in surgery now. Clint is waiting outside her room for any updates."
Yelena can feel her tongue throbbing when she sucks it in between her teeth, and she remembers the blood she spit out of her mouth. "She was bleeding so much, Tasha," she cries softly, bringing a bandaged hand up to cover her burning eyes. "I thought she was dead when I first found her. Oh my god. I could have lost her. Oh my god."
Natasha hugs her closer and tucks Yelena's head under her chin as her little sister begins to sob and hiccup into her chest, rubbing gentle circles into her shoulder and laying her cheek on golden hair.
"She's gonna be okay, Yelena. She'll be okay."
Yelena clings to her like a lifeline and wills herself to believe it as the tears soak her face.
——
Kate is officially pronounced to be in a coma two days before Yelena is discharged, and she's losing her shit. She hasn't been allowed to see her girlfriend the entire time she was still stuck in the hospital due to her own injuries, but she's able to stand up without getting too dizzy now and she's already used to the crutches needed for her sprained ankle.
The wound that she had bitten into her tongue had apparently looked and felt a lot worse than it actually was, and Yelena was already back to being able to eat soft foods, and the cut above her eye was scabbed over. Now the only real problems were the bruised ribs and burns on her palms- an annoyance more than anything, but still a major hindrance.
"Am I allowed to see her, now?" Yelena asks anxiously, cornering the doctor that had been sent to officially discharge her before he can leave.
The man sighs and scribbles a few more things down on his clipboard before checking his watch. "Once your sister is here to get a rundown of your at-home care, yes, we can take you to see Miss Bishop."
Yelena resists the urge to tear out her own hair and instead nods gratefully, her fingers pressing into her thighs through the soft pants she'd been given to wear. She'd been offered the option of a wheelchair over the crutches, seeing as her palms were still healing and the sticks were even harder to use without perfectly working hands, but that was too much for Yelena. Being in the hospital again at all was enough trauma to keep her away from people for the rest of her life, but she couldn't leave without Kate. Being confined to a chair would not do.
Natasha arrives with Clint a few minutes later, and the best friends both press kisses to Yelena's head before helping her stand up from her chair. The doctor hands Natasha several pill bottles and a thick paper packet of instructions before shaking her hand, bidding Yelena a speedy recovery, and disappearing into the hallway.
A nurse shows up just as quickly, her smile gentle. "I can take you to see your girlfriend, now, Miss Belova."
Yelena nods gratefully and follows after her with Clint and Natasha on either side, her anxiety building mercilessly in her chest with each heavy step closer to Kate's room. According to Clint, the young archer had been through three surgeries since they'd been admitted, one of which had been on her fucking brain, but all had been 100% successful and she was expected to recover without complications as long as her treatments were administered correctly.
If she woke up.
The door to Kate's room opens, and Yelena's heart drops in her chest at the sight of her girlfriend. She hurries in as fast as she can on the crutches, and ultimately just abandons them on the floor once she's close enough to the bedside chair.
"Kate Bishop," she whimpers softly, a shaking hand reaching out to rest on Kate's arm. The woman looks peaceful enough, but the bandages and wires and tubes turn her into a nightmare. Yelena can feel the tears already falling as she tries and fails to keep her eyes off the more grievous injuries.
Kate's legs are completely covered in wrappings and casts from a total knee replacement surgery and several stitches and broken bones, and her arms are littered with angry bruises and cuts that have minor bandages or some kind of ointment on them, but it's her head that has Yelena's stomach roiling.
The most damage had been done to her skull, she had been told. The whiplash from the crash itself and then hitting the pavement had splintered bone and damaged nerve endings, but the surgery on her brain had thankfully been small and didn't stretch to her spine. Either way, the archer was expected to need physical therapy in order to recover properly when it came to mental capabilities and processes, but seeing as she was still unconscious, they had no idea how extensive the psychological damage was.
"My Kate Bishop," Yelena whispers to herself, twining her fingers with Kate's and laying her head on the edge of the cot. How did this happen? How could this happen to them?
She remembers the ring box she had been carrying around with her for months now and feels a chill shoot down her spine. She already knew that all of their things had been recovered safely, including the ring, but the thought that she had been planning to propose the day of the accident was too much. There was no engagement to talk about- only the fear of a life without Kate Bishop.
Yelena's allowed to stay with her girlfriend until visiting hours are over, and her energy is so sapped that she's barely able to put up a fight before she's back in Clint's car with her sister holding her tightly as she cries. The image is burned into her brain, and it repeats over and over. Kate prone on the ground and covered in blood; Kate unconscious in a hospital bed with brain damage and a broken body.
She takes the pain medicine she's been given and passes out as soon as they get to Clint's house, the sleepy fog a welcome distraction from the hell she was in.
——
Natasha refuses to give her more medicine when she wakes up from the induced haze for the third time, which Yelena logically knows is a fair move, but she's pissed about it nonetheless. The drugs kept the nightmares away, and now with Kate Bishop gone to ward them off and in the fucking hospital, Yelena knows they'll be even worse than normal when they finally catch up to her.
Her grumpiness is temporarily dispelled when her new nephews are plopped carefully in her aching arms, however, and she cries over the two beautiful baby boys as she sinks into the couch and holds them close to her chest. Billy is asleep, his puffy baby lips parted as he smiles in his dreams, but Tommy has his wide green eyes on her with a bewildered look on his squishy face. Yelena can't help but to laugh tearfully as he grips her finger and teethes on it before staring at it in confusion.
"They're beautiful, Tasha," she chokes out, smothering both soft baby heads in kisses and cuddling the boys close.
Natasha's smile is wide, her cheeks glowing as she watches the scene adoringly. "Aren't they?"
Wanda appears from the kitchen and wraps her arms around her wife's waist, laying her cheek against Natasha's shoulder as she gazes at her baby boys and the way her sister-in-law is so gentle with them. "You'd be a good mom, Yelena."
The blonde's tears start anew, and she holds the babies closer. "Kate wants kids," she accounts, rocking her body to keep Billy asleep. He coos softly and presses his head closer to her, giving a tiny yawn while his brother continues to stare. "Fuck, Natasha, she wants kids. She wants kids, and I want kids, and I was gonna propose to her and now she's- fuck. Oh my god."
Wanda carefully takes her sons from Yelena's arms so that Natasha can sit and pull her sister into a tight hug, stroking her hair. "I know, Yelena. I know. She'll be alright. She's gonna wake up soon, and she'll get better, and then you two can get married and make babies and give Billy and Tommy some more cousins and it'll be perfect, okay?"
Yelena's laugh is wobbly and quickly turns back into hiccups, but her sister's words help. "I need to see her. Will you take me to see her?"
"Of course, Yelena. Let's get some food in you and then we can go, alright?"
Yelena nods and accepts the help to hobble to the kitchen table, where Laura is humming and making grilled cheese sandwiches. She plates one with a steaming bowl of tomato soup and puts them on the table in front of Yelena before pressing a soft kiss to the crown of her head.
"Eat up, honey. Drink some water. Breathe."
Yelena melts against her and wraps Laura in an awkward side hug, missing her own mother desperately. The food is hot and delicious, but the flavor barely registers because of how anxious she is to get back to Kate.
The drive to the hospital is much too long, and Yelena has to keep her eyes closed for the majority of it due to the unexpected terror that spikes every time she sees the road rushing past them. Was she going to be too scared to drive ever again? Would she ever feel strong enough to get back behind a wheel?
As long as her Kate is okay, honestly, she couldn't care less.
Kate is looking significantly better when they get to her room, and the tears are so familiar to Yelena at this point that she doesn't even notice them streaming down her cheeks until Natasha brushes them away. The doctor gives them both an update on the archer's condition, lining out the progress her stitches and broken bones and burns are making, even saying that the physical aspects of her head injury are already mending beautifully and much faster than expected.
But she is still unconscious. And Yelena feels like she's going to snap.
She situates herself in the chair next to Kate's bed, marveling at the significant lack of certain wires and tubes that already aren't needed anymore. The bruising and swelling have gone down in several places, and Yelena can taste the salt in her mouth when she tries to give a wobbly smile as she kisses Kate's forehead.
"Hi, babydoll," she whispers, letting her lips linger on the warm skin. Kate's even breaths are hot on her cheek, and she shuts her eyes tightly, willing her girlfriend to wake up. "Please be okay. I need you to be okay."
She and Natasha stay there with Kate for several hours, her older sister getting a few energy drinks from a vending machine and taking a nap while Yelena just holds Kate's hand and talks to her softly.
"You're going to love Tommy and Billy, Kate Bishop," she whispers, stroking a thumb over Kate's wrist. "They're so squishy and cuddly. I can't wait for you to meet them."
Yelena eventually dozes off at one point, and she's thrown back awake by Natasha frantically calling for a doctor. She shoots up with a headache building around the cut on her forehead to see Kate's fingers twitching in her bandaged palm, and a rush of different emotions dumps itself into her system as her sister carefully pries her from the chair she's in so that a doctor can get to Kate.
Yelena stumbles and whips her head around in a panic, her mind whirling. "Tasha? Tasha, what-"
"She's waking up, Yelena- we need to get out of the way."
They end up in the hallway in another set of chairs once Natasha is able to retrieve Yelena's crutches from the panic of the hospital room, and she's wringing her hands for a few minutes before Natasha has had enough.
"You're gonna tear your bandages off like that," she mutters, gently taking Yelena's hands in her own and holding them away from each other. "Breathe, Yelena. They're gonna take care of her."
Yelena forces air into her lungs and blinks hard, failing to keep the tears from falling. Natasha holds her into her side, her big sister supporting her up. "I need her to be okay, Tasha," she murmurs softly, lips twisting.  "I need my Kate Bishop."
"I know, Lena. Breathe. Kate's strong. She'll be annoying the shit out of us before you know it."
This gets a wobbly laugh out of the blonde, and she presses her forehead against her sister's in gratitude. "Thank you for being here with me."
"I'm never going anywhere."
"You better not. I'll kick your ass."
They wait about thirty minutes before a doctor opens the door to Kate's room and offers them a relieved smile. "We've got her stabilized and she's lookin' fine," he tells them, offering a clipboard for them to look over with information on her vitals mapped out. "She's a bit disoriented, of course, and her body has been inactive for over a week, so that combined with the beating she took is going to leave her exhausted, but she's currently awake enough to eat and talk. Feel free to go in and see her for a moment while we get some treatment plans worked out."
Natasha thanks him and helps a restless Yelena stand and hobble back into the room, where Kate is propped up against a mound of pillows with a fresh pain medication IV drip in her arm and new vital monitors hooked up to her fingers. She spots the two sisters and gives a weary smile, the bags under her eyes dark.
"Hey, Natasha," she croaks, voice rough from not being used for over a week. The sunlight from the window casts her in a honey golden glow, and Yelena doesn't think she's ever seen anything more beautiful than her Kate Bishop alive and well. (As well as she can be.)
Yelena can feel her eyes flood with tears for the millionth time, but she manages to hold them back as she pushes from her sister and hurries to Kate's bedside, cupping the archer's cheek gently and pressing a desperately soft kiss to her dry lips. "I'm so glad you're okay," she chokes out, pressing her forehead to her girlfriend's, mindful of the bandages and stitches.
Kate lets out a noise of surprise, and when Yelena leans back in confusion, something cold and terrifying slips into her heart at the look in Kate's eyes.
"Oh. Um- wow. Not that I'm gonna complain about being kissed by a beautiful woman as soon as I wake up, because, like, damn. But, uh... hi. Are... you a friend of Natasha's?"
-—
Yelena is completely silent on the drive home, her eyes dazed and unfocused and staring absently out of the window with a slack jaw. They were sent back out of the room almost as soon as the doctors realized the one problem with Kate's condition. The one mental process that had been damaged.
Memory loss.
But why only Yelena?
She doesn't hear Natasha trying to talk to her, doesn't register Laura or the dogs or her parents who arrived while they were at the hospital. She doesn't feel the arms around her shoulders, doesn't feel the scalding shower water on her broken skin, doesn't feel the drug induced fog taking her until she's already gone.
And she is desperate to stay gone.
Natasha lets her stay gone a lot longer this time.
It's a few days until she comes back around, her mother's soothing touch in her hair ringing through to her brain as Melina sits silently at her daughter's bedside. The woman gives her a tearful smile when Yelena's eyes land on her and focus, registering her mother after a moment.
"Mama."
"Hello, malaya medveditsa." Melina presses a kiss to her daughter's forehead. "I am so happy you are here." Yelena knows she doesn't just mean here as in Clint's farm.
"I miss you," Yelena whispers, her lips twisting up as her brain slowly remembers more and more. Alexei appears in the doorway and sits on the other side of the bed, his weight nearly toppling it. He takes her free hand, and Yelena starts to hiccup softly.
"Papa."
Her parents just hold her.
Are you a friend of Natasha's?
——
Yelena turns down every offer to go visit Kate in the hospital, and she can feel her heart wither away more and more each time. But she can't do it. She can't. The way Kate looked at her, that light of unfamiliarity in someone's eyes when a stranger acts like they know them...
God, she kissed her, and Kate doesn't even know who she is.
Why did Kate only forget Yelena?
(Because the author said so. The author can do whatever they want. That is the beauty of fanfiction. It's okay I hate myself too.)
Each new update from Clint and Natasha kills Yelena a little more, and by the time a week has passed since Kate woke up, she's nearly screaming with how restless and lost she feels.
Kate is healing wonderfully and ahead of schedule. They've already got her started on physical and speech therapy. Her stitches can come out soon. Her blood pressure is back to normal. She can eat solid foods without assistance.
She doesn't know who Yelena is.
Her palms are finally healed enough for her to use her hands at 100%, so she starts working out in her room- pull ups on the door frame, mostly. Her ankle still has a boot on it, which means no runs yet.
It makes her want to die.
The day that Kate is scheduled to be discharged, Yelena finds herself stealing Natasha's car and driving so far out into the countryside that her ass is numb and not a single speck of civilization can be found. The boot and nervousness can only stop her so much.
She has several missed calls from her sister, but doesn't bother to return them until she's sure that the location for her phone is turned off.
"Where the hell are you?"
Yelena frowns slightly at the harshness in her sister's tone, but she knows it's deserved. "Out."
"Where, Yelena."
"I don't know, actually. Somewhere. Far."
"Jesus Christ, Yelena. You scared the shit out of us."
Yelena is silent for a moment, but then she forces the words out. "How's Kate?"
It's Natasha's turn to be quiet. "She's good. She's back at the house now. She... she keeps asking about you."
The breath feels like it's been punched from Yelena's body. "She what?"
"Well, it's probably nagging at her that a woman she doesn't recognize kissed her and then never came to see her again."
"That's not fair, Tasha," Yelena whispers.
"No, I know it's not. I'm sorry. It's just... do you know what you want to do about it?"
"What's there to do, Tasha? The love of my life doesn't know who I am. Sounds simple enough."
"You're not gonna try to help her remember?"
"The way I see it, she needs to be able to focus on getting better without some stranger claiming she's her girlfriend and causing her even more problems. She wouldn't-" Yelena stops and sucks in a breath as she leans her head on the car, eyes blurring with tears. "It's my fault, Tasha. It's my fault she almost died."
"Yelena."
"I don't care if that's stupid and childish. I want to stay away from her, okay? Please. I can't do this. I can't stand for her to look at me and not know who I am."
"But what if there's a chance for her to remember?" Natasha says weakly. "What about the ring, Yelena?"
Yelena hangs up, tosses her phone into the car, and slides down into the grass to curl in on herself and let the sobs fall from her mouth.
Fuck the ring.
Fuck everything.
——
Yelena returns to the farm only to drop off Natasha's car and pack her bag, throwing the duffel over her shoulder and heading back down the stairs towards the front door as quietly as she can. She's nearly there when a voice sounds from the couch in the main room, and her blood chills.
"You're Natasha's sister, right?"
Yelena's head turns slowly to see Kate Bishop laid across the couch, her legs and back both propped up on pillows with a blanket over her lap and a compression bandage around her forehead. Her heart is trying to decide between beating an extra million times per minute or just stopping entirely.
"What?" she chokes out, something hot and uncomfortable already building in her chest.
"Are you Natasha's sister?" Kate sits up a little more, the action making her wince. Yelena is moving towards her to help her before she can stop herself, but Kate accepts the offered hand with a look of appreciation. There's a fucking tingle when their skin touches.
"Yes, I am," Yelena says roughly, taking a rushed step back. There must be something concerning in her eyes, because Kate's brow furrows softly.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Her voice is stiff. The blood is pounding too loudly in her ears, and the backs of her eyes are burning so hot she can barely see. "I'm glad you're alright, Kate." Yelena turns quickly and hurries for the door, but Kate's voice stops her again.
"This is yours, Yelena. Natasha found it in between the couch cushions when she was setting it up for me and asked if I could give it to you when you got back."
Shit.
"Yelena?"
She doesn't have to turn back around to know that Kate is holding the ring box in the very hand that was originally supposed to wear the jewel in the first place.
"Ask Natasha to hold onto it for me, will you?" Yelena says roughly, putting her hand on the doorknob.
"I know you, don't I?"
Yelena slumps forward and leans her head on the door heavily, the sobs already threatening to break loose. I can't do this. "Did Tasha tell you something?"
"Nobody has told me anything. It's driving me fucking crazy." Kate's voice is low and agitated. "They said I have memory loss, but they won't tell me what I've forgotten. Only details from the crash I was in. But you're on my lock screen and there's a Polaroid of us in the back of my phone."
Yelena can feel herself start to hyperventilate, but she clamps down on it and forces her chest to stay still.
"Were you in the crash, too? Is that what happened to your foot?"
She's getting dizzy.
"Who are you to me, Yelena?"
The edges of her vision are going dark.
"Yelena?"
She shoves down on the door handle and lurches forward out of the house, barely managing to get past the threshold before stumbling and crashing down onto the porch as her eyes roll back and her chest screams at her to breathe. But she can't. She can't breathe. Everything is too tight and too hot and she can't breathe she can't breathe she can't breathe she can't-
——
Yelena's head is foggy from the remnants of a nightmare, but a face appears in the blur of her vision and looms over her.
"I can't tell who you are," she croaks, "but if you don't get out of my face, I'm going to punch you."
Natasha's chuckle sounds forced as she leans back. "Fair enough."
"Jesus Christ. What happened this time?"
"You passed out on the porch. Kate said she thinks you were having a panic attack."
Fuck.
"I can't do this, Tasha. I can't do this."
"She wants to see you."
"I can't." Yelena's eyes well up and she presses her fists into them, mouth twisting painfully as a broken wail splits her throat. "I can't do this. I barely made it through her getting to know me the first time, Tasha. I can't do it again. I can't tell her about all the people I've killed again. I can't watch her face when she finds out how much blood I've spilt. I can't do it."
"Yelena-"
"I don't deserve her, Natasha!"
Her sister is quiet, a firm hand resting on her shoulder and squeezing. Yelena's body rocks with hiccups, and the despair in her blood is thick.
"How long have you been having worries about your relationship with Kate, Yelena?" Natasha asks softly, brushing a damp strand of hair from her baby sister's face.
Yelena doesn't respond for a few minutes as she tries to get her breathing back under control, and Natasha helps her sit up before getting her a glass of water and some of her non-drowsy pain medication.
"A while, I guess," she mutters lowly, staring sorrowfully down into the cup as she clasps it between her palms. The cold glass is soothing on her palms, which may be fully healed but are still easily aggravated. "Like I'm not enough for her. She needs more. I can't give her more."
"And you still wanted to propose?"
"I thought that maybe it would fix me."
Natasha pulls Yelena into her chest and holds her tight, kissing her hair.
"I thought that maybe if we got married, I wouldn't be scared anymore. It would be cemented, her and me. She wouldn't say yes if she wasn't sure, right?" Yelena whispers, tears pooling and dripping onto Natasha's sweater.
"But should you propose in the first place if you're not 100% sure about it yourself?" Natasha tucks away another strand of hair, cupping her sister's cheek.
"But I- I am sure, Tasha. I want Kate Bishop forever. Just my Kate Bishop. She's all I need."
"What makes you think she doesn't feel the same way about you, Yelena?"
"Because I-" She stops, bottom lip quivering as her shoulders shake. "I'm a mess. I'm broken, Tasha," she whispers, eyes blurry. "She deserves someone who isn't broken."
Natasha tuts and cups Yelena's face with both hands, leveling their stares. "Yelena. Honey. We're all a little broken." She kisses the healing cut on her forehead. "Kate loves you. Even now. I can see it. Wanda can see it. Clint and Laura and the kids and the twins and the dogs can see it." Yelena hiccups a small laugh. "She may not remember the face, but she sure as hell remembers the feeling. She sees you and instinctively feels love."
"Do you really think so?" Yelena whispers after a moment, sniffing softly.
Natasha's smile is sad but assuring. "I do. She just needs to be given a chance to remember."
"What if she's different? What if she has an out and doesn't want me? What if she hates me, Natasha?"
"Then we learn and adapt- and I don't think that'll happen." Her sister leans their foreheads together, muttering soothingly. "It's gonna be okay. I'll be here no matter what happens, you know that."
They stay that way for a moment until the door opens and Wanda appears with Billy asleep in her arms, smiling softly at the two sisters. Natasha seems to glow when she spots her wife, and she stands to hug the woman and kiss both her and her son. "Hi, detka."
Wanda hums and kisses Nat softly, then takes her spot on the bed next to Yelena. "I thought a good baby cuddle might help you feel better."
"You know me so well," Yelena jokes softly, holding her arms out for the baby. Billy is placed gently into them, and she cradles him close, pressing her lips to his soft head and inhaling his baby smell. "Fresh baby," she whispers with a grin, looking at him adoringly.
Natasha cackles and her wife scowls good-naturedly, slapping her arm. "That's exactly what I said when I saw them for the first time!"
"I was exhausted, and she went straight for the boys first, only to fucking say fresh baby," Wanda gripes, but her eyes are soft and she loops an arm around Natasha's waist.
Yelena smiles and laughs softly, bouncing the baby gently as he shifts and yawns, his eyes fortunately staying closed. "Hello, tiny boy," she whispers to him, stroking a knuckle over his soft hair and squishy cheeks. "You are so precious."
"Kate is holding Tommy right now, if you want to go see her?" Wanda offers carefully, Natasha squeezing her hip.
Yelena pauses and looks up at them, brow furrowed.
"She has a really high chance of gaining all of her memory back if she's able to interact with what she's forgotten, Yelena," Natasha says gently, leaning her cheek against her wife's head.
The blonde sucks at her lip anxiously, glancing back down to the sleeping baby in her arms. He gives another big yawn and stretches his pudgy fingers out, eyes cracking open to look up at her. "What do you think, Billy Boy Baby?" Yelena whispers, tapping his nose softly. "Should we go visit Kate Bishop and your brother?"
He smiles sleepily before yawning again and snuggling back into her arms.
"I guess that's a yes," Yelena murmurs. She looks back up at Wanda and Natasha, eyes stinging. "I don't know if I can do it. I'm scared, Tasha. What if I can't do it?"
Her sister moves back towards her and hugs Yelena's shoulders. "You're one of the strongest people I know, Yelena. Give yourself a chance, okay?"
"...Okay."
Kate is sitting up on the couch with the footrest up and Tommy perched happily in her lap when Yelena appears in the main room, Wanda and Natasha right behind her. She's not allowed to walk and hold Billy at the same time due to her boot, but once she's sat down in a chair next to the couch, they place the baby back in her arms. Kate watches her closely the whole time, absentmindedly patting Tommy's back.
Yelena waits until the two other women have left the room before glancing up and meeting Kate's gaze, heart pounding against her ribs. "Hi, Kate Bishop."
The archer's smile is beaming, recognition shining in her eyes. "Hi, Yelena."
——
By the time Kate's knee is healed up enough for her to use a cane instead of a walker, she and Yelena have gone back to spending almost every waking moment together. More and more pieces of her memory come back every day the more they talk, and everyone else can see Kate falling in love with Yelena all over again.
And she's not shy about it, either. The first thing that she's filled in on is the timeline of their relationship, spanning from when they first met at a surprise party Natasha was throwing for Clint, to when they started dating, their first kiss, their first time together, the adventures they'd been on, all the way up to the car crash.
With all of this in mind, Kate figures there's no reason for her to hold back when she starts regaining memories and therefore feelings. She notices how beautiful Yelena's smile is, so she tells her. She remembers the way her face looks when she comes, and doesn't even hesitate before letting Yelena know that it's one of the hottest things she's ever seen.
"Can I kiss you?" Kate asks one evening, staring up at Yelena from where her head is resting in the blonde's lap. Yelena's hands go still, the tv screen blaring red when her character dies, but she's unbothered.
"What?" She glances down at Kate, whose head bandages are already gone.
"Can I kiss you?" she repeats, smiling wide. She reaches a hand up to cup Yelena's face, which is already red. Another thing she had gotten to learn about her girlfriend again- Yelena appeared so stoic, but when Kate flirted even a little bit, she blushed like a fucking tomato.
"Are you sure?" Yelena frowns and brushes a hand through Kate's hair, and the woman purrs happily, her eyes closing with content. Good lord, she was adorable. "You don't have to. I'm not rushing either of us. We have all the time in the world now, detka."
Kate smiles lazily and looks back up at her girlfriend- god, that word sounded so good- and gives a soft nod. "I'm sure. Yes. Please."
Yelena's breath hitches, and she puts the controller that she's still holding down to stroke a knuckle over Kate's cheek. "You're sure-sure?" she whispers, eyes hooded as they dart to Kate's lips. She would be lying, of course, if she said she hadn't wanted to kiss the archer breathless from the moment she'd come out of her coma, but after kissing Kate before realizing the woman didn't recognize her, she had stayed away from the topic out of shame.
Kate's own breath catches at the look on Yelena's face, and she grabs the hand that Yelena has on her face softly, closing her eyes and pressing her lips against the calloused palm. "I'm sure-sure."
Yelena can feel her heart thudding against her ribs, and she feels like a teenager again, spotting Kate for the first time through a crowd of people she wished she could avoid. "Okay," she whispers, shifting and cupping Kate's face gently.
"Okay?" The archer smiles almost shyly, lashes fluttering.
"Okay." Yelena leans down and presses her lips to Kate's ever so softly, breathing the archer in and feeling herself already getting high on the scent of flannel and pine.
She breaks off, and Kate stares at her, starstruck. "Wow," she mumbles, lips parted.
Yelena laughs softly, her cheeks burning. "Yeah?"
"Yeah." Kate leans up and captures Yelena's mouth in hers again, cupping the back of her head and kissing her hard. The blonde groans and wraps her arms around the archer, pressing them both carefully into the couch.
Yelena hisses a sigh and opens her mouth a little wider when Kate bites softly at her bottom lip, and the woman's tongue licks past them heatedly.
Jesus Christ, she had missed this.
Yelena tangles her hand into Kate's dark hair and tugs at it softly, earning a soft gasp from her before the blonde moves down her neck, trailing her lips along the strong jawline and nipping at her pulse.
"I love you, Kate Bishop," she growls softly, sucking a bruise into the soft skin under the archer's ear and soothing over it with her tongue. Kate pants breathlessly into her ear, and holy shit Yelena is turned on.
"Maybe wait to bang it out until Kate is fully healed?"
And just like that, the spell is broken, and Yelena promptly falls off of the couch. Classic.
"Наташа, клянусь Богом, я надеру тебе задницу!" she yells at her sister as she sits up, her cheeks burning furiously. Kate's face is just as red as hers, but there's a mischievous light in her eyes that lights Yelena's stomach on fire.
Natasha cackles so hard that she doubles over with her arms around her stomach, wiping tears from her eyes. Yelena is fuming. Kate is blushing. No one is being productive.
"Sorry, sorry- I had to." Natasha pauses, her grin wicked. "Actually, no, I'm not sorry. You two are both so fucking horny for each other and it's just the funniest thing ever. I can't with y'all."
Yelena can only gape at her sister, who shrugs and heads up the stairs. "Wanda is taking a nap, so keep it quiet, will you?"
She swears colorfully under her breath and huffs, but her blood feels like lightning zaps through it when Kate's hand reaches over and cups her chin, her head twisted to face the archer.
"Don't pout, poor girl. Are you really horny for me?"
Yelena's face goes supernova.
Fuck you, Natasha.
"Fuck you, Kate Bishop," she says out loud.
Her girlfriend's smile is sly. "Literally, I hope?"
"Kate!"
The archer cackles and slumps back on the couch, holding her aching stomach. "You're too cute, baby."
Yelena only grumbles, scowling as she tries to decide if tickling Kate and possibly reopening any injuries would be worth it. Kate sees her face and stops abruptly, pointing.
"Yelena Belova, you are not allowed to tickle me," she warns, raising a brow.
Yelena narrows her eyes and leans into her girlfriend's face, somehow gaining the bravado to smirk in a way she knew always got Kate going. "How about we get married and I show you just how hard I can tickle you, Kate Bishop?"
Kate squints, the tips of her ears red. "I can't tell if you're proposing or threatening me with a good time."
The blonde shrugs. "Why not both?"
Her girlfriend smiles brightly, her eyes wide. "Are you seriously fucking proposing to me right now, Yelena Belova?"
"Maybe?"
Kate hums roughly and leans forward to kiss her hard, pressing her palm to the back of Yelena's head to hold her closer. "You must really like me, Miss Belova," she whispers in between breaths, "to propose- after kissing me only once- since I even remembered who you are."
Yelena smiles into Kate's lips and slowly maneuvers to stand up while still kissing her, moving forward to straddle the archer's lap. Kate lets out a soft noise, and Yelena silences it, tracing her tongue along the archer's soft bottom lip and tugging it between her teeth.
"Are you guys serious right now?"
Yelena just kisses Kate harder and takes a first of dark hair, swallowing every noise and moan her girlfriend makes while flipping Natasha off from where her sister had appeared at the top of the stairs. The redhead just groans and turns right back around, muttering under her breath. "I just wanted a fucking sandwich."
Yelena huffs a laugh and breaks off from Kate for a small moment, both of them breathing hard with flushed cheeks and warm stomachs. "Yes, Kate Bishop. I like you. Quite a bit, actually, I hope you've noticed."
Kate can only nod, her eyes wide and a little unfocused. She is the poster child of freshly kissed.
Yelena grins and kisses her cheek softly, whispering against the soft skin. "Will you marry me, Kate Bishop?"

“Bye Ms Kim! Bye, everyone! It was so nice to be with you all in Japan, until our next competition. You all did well” Chan bowed toward his teachers and fellow students as he left the bus, bag slung over his shoulder.
Once he was on the pavement, Chan sighed and hastily walked into his building, ready to pass out on his bed. He clicks the elevator button to the floor he lives on while fidgeting with the new keychain he had bought as a souvenir. The ride was taking longer than usual for some reason.
When the elevator dinged, indicating that he had arrived, Chan eagerly stepped out and headed for the door of his family’s apartment. Instead of him being able to open it easily with the password, the lock buzzes and the sound causes Chan to frown in confusion. Did his family decide to change the house code while he was away?
As Chan was about to try one more time, his brother had texted him about how they had gone to see family and forgot he would arrive that day, adding that wouldn’t be back until the next morning.
Seeing this, Chan runs a hand through his hair and huffs. He was so ready to get the rest he badly needed until an idea came to mind.
Chan turns towards the apartment next to his family’s and grins, you were probably home, right? A girl who was his age, living independently next to his family, probably wouldn’t have many places to be, so he tried the last bit of his luck.
You hear your doorbell ring and wonder who would be at your door late into the evening. As per your paranoid self, you bring a knife to the door, being a girl and living alone with her cat wasn’t exactly the ideal situation to be in, especially at this hour.
You hesitantly peek into your peephole and your jaw falls slack as you struggle to open the door. What the hell was Chan doing at your doorstep? You thought his family would be at home like usual, the Lee family never really went anywhere and would often invite you over so this came as a surprise.
“Chan? That’s new, what brings you here?” You squint at the boy and he chuckles awkwardly, a hand scratching his cheek.
He had his backpack still on his back and a small stroller next to him, he looked like he had just come back from the airport. ‘Oh, I forgot he flew to Japan last week for a dance competition,’ you thought to yourself.
“My family forgot about me arriving today and left to go see my relatives without me, so uh, I had no other option? Unless you’re uncomfortable with me staying for a night, I can just call up one of my friends to let me crash at theirs” Chan cringed at his own words.
Seungkwan lived an hour outside the main city and Vernon lived in a one-bedroom apartment that barely had anything but a bed and a place for his pet iguana. Mingyu was at his sister’s place, and Soonyoung had gone with his family, the house already cramped enough with two grown kids and their parents. He genuinely had no other option.
“What? No, it’s fine. I’ve known you and your family since the day I moved in, it’s the least I can do since you guys have been nice to me. Now come in,” You moved aside so Chan could shuffle in, and in his head, he made a mental note to thank you later when he wasn’t as tired from the jet lag.
You helped him move his things into the guest room before getting him settled. He looked exhausted, and as much as your crush on the boy had started to take in how adorable he was, you couldn’t afford to scare him off when he seemed like he had no other place to go.
“You can use the shower, I have extra products for guests in the second drawer so you’re free to use that as you like. I was making dinner so you’re also welcome to join me in case you haven’t eaten yet. Make yourself at home,” You offered Chan a shy smile and the boy felt his heart skip a beat. Have you always been that pretty?
Chan snapped himself out of his daze and nodded before smiling back at you. “Thanks, I seriously owe you a lot for letting me stay the night. I’m sorry for coming up on short notice,” he says bashfully. You were very kind and the fact that you even offered him dinner was crazy enough as it is.
“Hey, it’s no biggie. I don’t have guests over that often so it’s nice to have someone around now and then. Call this our first unofficial sleepover if you will,” You laugh and Chan can’t help but feel flustered around you. You were so calm despite everything, it was almost impressive to him.
You put your hands together and excuse yourself, making Chan stand up and smile at you once more before you leave the room.
“Towels are in that cabinet under the desk, I think you already have the password here since it’s just my cat’s name in lowercase letters,” Chan once again nods as he watches your figure disappear into the rest of the apartment.
The silence welcomes Chan as he turns to observe every inch of the room. It was very minimal with a simple white desk, a few pictures on display, and two candles off to the side. A white double-door closet stood at the opposite end of the bed, a plant in a gray pot right next to it.
A part of the wall had postcards from places he assumed you had gone to, as well as some awards from your school. It was nice how the room still had a few elements of you in it despite it being a guest room, he would’ve never known that you had topped your class or that you had been to France.
Grabbing a towel from the cabinet and some clothes from his bag, Chan then made his way over to your bathroom. As he was passing the kitchen, he saw your back and got a whiff of whatever you were making for dinner. It smelled like meat and ramyeon, something he had missed dearly during his entire trip to Japan.
Chan enters the bathroom quietly to avoid distracting you and looks at how organized everything is, noting that the room itself is also well-lit.
‘Maybe I should take a selfie in here later,’ he thought while checking himself in the mirror, only to grimace at his appearance shortly after. He looked beat despite the flight only being three hours.
You hear the shower turn on from the outside and continue to finish up plating the food, your cat rubbing herself against you as you bend down to pet her.
“It’s a bit weird, but you don’t mind having him around right?” Luna meows as if saying ‘Not at all’ and you chuckle.
“Well Luna, you already know how much I talk about him and it’s no surprise,” you tell your cat in a whisper. The shower halts and you bring the food to the coffee table in front of your TV, turning Netflix on while waiting for Chan.
“Oh, no way! Ramyeon and meat? You made this for me?” You hear Chan say dramatically as he clutches his chest. The reaction causes you to laugh as the boy plops himself on the couch beside you.
Seeing Chan in your peripheral almost made you choke on your bowl because of how good he looked. He was wearing a white shirt and grey sweats, so simple yet he looked godly.
“Not for you but I made extra ok! Wash the dishes with me at least since you still are technically a guest,” you joke.
Chan hums without another word and that was when you choked on your food. Wow, it was that easy? You thought you were going crazy. He looks at you oddly and raises an eyebrow at you.
“Sorry, I was shocked at how you agreed so quickly,” Chan laughed at your words before taking in the last bit of food on his plate, collecting all the dishes once you leaned back on the couch and sighed in contentment.
“Y/n, you said you’d do the dishes with me!” Chan whined from the kitchen. After opening your eyes and huffing, you then make your way into the kitchen and see Chan’s back in front of the sink.
“I have a dishwasher by the way, we can just rinse these off and put them in,” you say as a matter of fact.
Chan turns toward you with a huff and watches you open the space beside him, seeing you put in the rest of the dishes and turning them on.
“Remind me never to do dishes over here ever again” Chan frowns, a pout set on his lips as you wipe your hands dry.
“I’m honestly way too bored to watch something right now, do you mind just chatting for a bit? I’m too full,” the two of you walk into the living room once again before the boy hums with a smile. You sit on the couch and throw a blanket over the two of you.
Chan shifts to make himself more comfortable, suddenly noticing a very obvious lump under the blanket that slowly starts making its way toward you. “Luna, what did I say about hiding under the blanket? You’re so naughty.”
Grabbing your cat from under the covers, you then put her on top of your lap, her blue eyes staring straight into Chan’s soul. “Does she always stare? Her eyes are very, blue. It’s like she’s staring straight through me” he says, and takes a closer look at your cat.
“Sorry about her, I haven’t had anyone over in weeks so Luna’s fascinated by a new presence at the house” You giggle while petting her. Chan feels his heart do flips, seeing you in your most natural state made him fall for you just a tad bit more if that was even possible.
“Anyway, where have you been? Your parents told me you were in Japan or something. How was it there?” You grin.
You had been to Japan quite a few times, from what Chan could tell. If he could vaguely remember, one of the postcards in your room said Osaka and Kyoto, even Kobe.
“Ah yeah, we had our most recent competition there, it was great. A lot of sightseeing and whatnot for the most, I wish I went outside of Tokyo but we couldn’t leave so I had to settle with just exploring the city,” Chan breathes out, recalling the memories he made with his friends Yeonjun and Changbin.
“That sounds so cool! I’ve been to Tokyo loads of times and honestly, city life is way too busy for me. I think visiting the more provincial areas is great if you want the feeling of peace.” Chan noticed a bit of a distant look in your eyes and wondered if you were thinking about your memories in Japan as well.
Luna suddenly meows and jumps onto Chan’s lap, causing the two of you to jolt up out of surprise. “Huh, she’s usually weary of everyone. This is a first for her,” you say with a soft smile.
Chan pets Luna with a soft smile on his face, the image making your heart flutter. It was impossible to contain your crush on the male any longer after everything that happened, hell, even your cat liked him as much as you did.
“Well, hi there Luna. You’re adorable and look just like your owner. Y/n, you legitimately like your cat, she’s like a mini clone of yours.” Your cheeks heat up at Chan’s stare, the male looking between you and the cat as his eyes linger a bit too long on you.
“OK enough, as far as I know, you know way more about me than I do about you. So, tell me about yourself?” Chan says after a minute of silence.
You jolt at his voice and look at him with an awkward smile. There wasn’t much to say about yourself if you were being honest, you couldn’t gauge anything interesting enough to tell the boy.
“I can’t think of anything, I’m a pretty boring person,” Chan frowns at your words. Boring? That didn’t seem right to him, there was probably more to you than you think, he just had to get it out of you somehow.
“Are you sure? Y/n, you’ve gone to Japan and a lot of other countries, judging from your guest bedroom alone, and I think that’s interesting enough as it is.” You blush at Chan’s words, this was the first time someone had ever asked about you, and you felt grateful towards him.
“Thank you, Chan, that’s honestly super sweet of you to say. I just traveled a lot from a young age since I was offered the opportunity to, but for now, I’m just taking a break from it all. Moving to different places in such a fast-paced environment becomes exhausting once you get older,” You play with your hands and recall every single place you’ve been to.
Traveling and moving was all you had ever known since early childhood, due to your parents moving around a lot because of their jobs and because they were always just super busy people in general. One day, you just got so used to all of it that settling down for the first time in college felt foreign to you.
“That’s honestly really cool, I’ve only ever known the practice room and the music so dancing is like my version of that. Now that I was offered the opportunity to travel, I didn’t realize it would be so overwhelming, especially as a first-timer.” Chan smiles comfortingly.
He truly admired you a lot. After getting a feel of what your life was like, before settling down into one place, he was intrigued by your way of life. How things worked after you had gotten used to it all, and how you coped with the amount of change you were faced with.
“I guess we still do have quite a lot to learn from each other then. You have a lot to tell me, and I think that’s very clear based on our current ordeal.” Chan laughs.
You shrug your shoulders and throw him a sheepish smile. No one had ever been curious about you, or how you lived your life, unlike how Chan did. It felt refreshing to be able to share your life experiences and what you had gone through with someone who listened.
Sure, you did have your friends who were also curious about you, and that's how your friendships even came to be, but Chan was different.
You always thought you’d only have a few chance encounters with the boy next door, but you never thought you’d have him sitting beside you on your couch as you go over your life with him.
“I never really got the chance to talk about my life as much, but you were willing to listen to me like it was nothing. If I continue yapping though, we’d take forever and I don’t want to keep you up any longer since you are still tired from your flight,” You say, and look at Chan beside you.
A pout stays on his face, but he had totally forgotten about the jet lag and how badly he wanted to just pass out after spending time with you.
Chan truly couldn’t get enough of you, and he starts to feel a crush blooming in his chest, not like he had one already, he just never acted on his feelings towards you.
“Don’t be like that, I live next door so you’re technically welcome to come over anytime. Now go on, I’ll let you rest up. I’ll be in my room if you need me ok? Goodnight Chan,” You tilt your head a bit as you greet him goodnight, and Chan swears he felt his heart melt right at that very moment. It didn't help that your adorable cat was rubbed up against your leg too.
“I will, thanks again for letting me stay Y/n. Goodnight, sleep well,” Chan breathes out a breath he didn't even know he was holding. You grin and turn in the direction of your room, Luna following closely behind you.
Chan was restless when he came but with your presence alone, it seems like he could stay up for a whole week if he could.

Top 24 Screenshots of 2024
I was tagged by @loony-moonsims Thank you!! (Sorry for being so late. I was on vacation and didn't have access to my laptop with all my screenshots.) I'm not going to tag anyone else to do this because it's way too late and I don't know who has or hasn't done it. But if you want to, feel free to say I tagged you!!! It is a lot of fun to do! I already did one favorite post from each month in my 2024 "Year In Review" post, but that was strictly one per month and didn't give me a chance to talk about it. So expect a lot of rambling under the cut.
tw for blood in several images and for spider imagery in Oct/Nov.
January
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting on January 1st, I fell head-over-heels in love with Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous -- now my favorite game of all time -- and with Areelu Vorlesh. I tried my hand at recreating characters from images, which I'd never done before, and it actually turned out pretty well. (And started a mini obsession.) My first version of Areelu was not my most accurate, but I do have a deep soft spot for it, for many reasons. And while Reda isn't perfect either, I do love how she turned out as a sim.
February
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The month of goth/dark fantasy people, I guess. The Lady of Ravens was very fun to design, and I discovered that that pose looks perfect with the crow/raven accessory I have.
March
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In March I got bored of sweet, cutesy flower sims, and decided it was about time someone played into the horror of being both a person and a plant. And thus this sim, who someone described as "sleeping beauty if she took control of the roses and became a villain" was born. She has thorny vines growing under and over her skin, and that rose has burst from her eye. I wanted her to have little thorns poking out from under her skin, but no such cc existed, unfortunately.
Also in March, I played the first of Rook's two Horrible, Very Bad, No-Good weekends. This render (lovingly dubbed "Mirror Punch" in my folders) was meant to represent the scene that the party saw upon rushing to see what the giant crash they all heard from the lower floor of the inn was about. Rook had just woken up from being asleep for over 12 hours after passing out from exhaustion and stress, only to be told that the "chihuahua" the party had rescued the day before just so happened to be the very same man who had sold Rook to Captain Wolf 3 years ago. Oh, and this was after dying once and then having a very emotionally tense conversation with his mentor once he woke up. Because my boy is an idiot who doesn't know how to handle emotional surprises, he decided to try and punch a mirror, because repeatedly killing an imaginary version of said chihuahua/man wasn't working.
I'm still incredibly proud of this render. Editing the mirror to be cracked took me over two hours, let alone drawing in all the blood.
April
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In April I was deep in my pirate obsession, in part brought about by obsessively watching Black Sails for the first time. I made the first draft of my ship infirmary (now the canon appearance of the Tide Breaker's infirmary), and also made this sim, who despite my best attempts to NOT relate everything to Rook ended up becoming the canon appearance (in my head at least) for Kholl, the Tide Breaker's surgeon, and Jay's mentor.
May
Tumblr media Tumblr media
May was a great month for renders. Actually this one specific week was great for renders, since these both got posted in less than a week. The Nine of Swords is still one of my favorite renders I've ever made. I just love the way the composition works, with the chains framing it, and the swords (all copies of Wolf's rapier from my edit of her as Justice) hanging over Rook's head. Of course, I can only take partial credit, since I was inspired by Sara Kipin's version of the card.
Morana's Death card was also a lot of fun to make. It was my first attempt at putting trees into blender (a pain in the ass, but worth it) and with using photo background (easier, and also worth it). I really enjoyed how the final product turned out, and it's just such a good representation of her. She's named after a Slavic goddess of death and winter, and she's a necromancer from a frozen place, so it works well. I also really like the added touch of the red coming from the skull's eye, which was suggested by someone I was on call with while making the render.
June
Tumblr media Tumblr media
June was ALSO all about the dnd characters. Aside from spending way too much time furnishing Lockwood Manor and making its awful owner, making Val as a sim, and giving Zenara a zillion new outfits, I also made these two edits.
The Judgement card was my first big in-game edit in a very, very long time. It was an interesting challenge to get it to turn out how I wanted it to. While the editing for this one was very simple, getting everything else as I wanted it was difficult. There was a lot of TOOL involved, and gshade and Relight saved my ass when it came to getting the nighttime scene to look right. This card is a recreation of a moment from Avra's backstory, where she awoke in her own grave. On digging her way out, she found a raven messenger waiting for her. The Judgement card is just too fucking perfect for her, and it was a lot of fun to create my own version of it.
Aspen's Fool Card was an idea that had been floating in my mind for MONTHS before I finally got around to making it. I could not possibly be happier with how it turned out. This was my first experiment with sizing up sims in blender, and it worked perfectly!!! A giant version of Fin (the jester-like god of death and Aspen's warlock patron) looming over Aspen dancing on strings was exactly what I had in mind. It was also my first experiment with bringing in 3D meshes that weren't already made for the sims, which was interesting.
July
Tumblr media Tumblr media
July was all about the Liars. I played through (most of) Rook's SECOND Horrible, Very Bad, No-Good Weekend, which kicked off with the traumatic reveal that Rook's beloved mentor, Sigmar, was actually a corpse being puppeted by the BBEG, Dr. Purity. And not only that, but the party wizard, Maka, had known since day 1. Given Rook's name, and the fact that the special moves Sigmar had been teaching him were all named after chess pieces, it was just too damn perfect to turn Rook into a chess piece for this render. To this day, it's one of my favorite renders I've ever made. Not only does it LOOK amazing, but the layers upon layers of symbolism and little details hidden in it, most of which mean nothing to anyone other than me and the DM of Rook's game. This was my 2nd experiment with giant sims in blender, and also with outside models, as well as my first horizontal/landscape render. Making the pose for this one was a TON of fun, and I got to play around with some editing methods I hadn't used in a LONG time.
Speaking of Dr. Purity, his Temperance card was my most detailed blender set to date!! The many objects were a lot of fun to import and set up. And the editing was SO much fun. Drawing all the shadows on his clothes was a ton of fun, as was fixing the clipping in his hair and figuring out how to make it look like there was liquid in the flask was also fun. This is maybe my least popular render, but I am proud of it and I do love it. We finally got a face reveal of the BBEG, of course I had to do something with that!!! (I definitely didn't only start caring this much about him after finding out he was Sigmar's true identity. Nope, not at all.)
August
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In August, I was back in a furnishing mood, this time working on the pirate ships. (I was simultaneously working on making maps for all three of them for our VTT.) I really love how this shot of Zara's cabin turned out. And this coming weekend Rook gets to step into this room again, this time as Captain in his own right! I can't fucking wait.
The Weeping Angels gif was SO much fun to make. It wasn't my first time making a gif, but it was the first in a long time, and also by far the most complicated one I'd ever made. It ended up being well over 30 frames long, and I love the final result!!! (After I made it, I watched it so many times I started to get a headache, lmao.)
September
Tumblr media Tumblr media
September Rook was still having a Bad Time, and I got obsessed with Carrion.
I love how the editing (although simple) turned out on this render of Rook. The accents on the chains, the veins I drew under his skin, it all looks great. My poor boy, he does NOT deserve this, lmao. Sorry buddy. This render is (somewhat understandably) one of my least popular, but I still love it a lot.
Theodore's render is also super simple, but looks really good to me. Once again, drawing in details on the armor/clothes was a fun experiment, and so was adding more definition and age to Theodore's face. This was also only my 2nd time sculpting clothing in blender (the first being the Nine of Swords) with his cape, and it looks quite nice.
October
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In October, I was hard-core fixating on Zara's upcoming introduction, so she (FINALLY) got her own tarot card. I can't believe it took me as long as it did to realize the World was her card. Anyways, I like how this one turned out. The symbolism with the items and their placement was a lot of fun to add in, and the colors turned out great.
The other shot I really really loved was this preview picture for my spider legs accessory edit. Using TOOL to get the sim in position was a pain, but it turned out SO worth it. This sim in general was super fun to make and looks badass as hell, but her in this pose with the throne is even better.
November
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In November I took a break from editing and rendering to get back in P:WotR mode, so I did some neat little recreations of character portraits from the game. I was on my evil run this time, and these two were my two new discovery favorites. I was quite happy with how well I was able to recreate these just with what I had in my game.
December
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In December I was back on my rendering bullshit, this time with Carrion. I'd had this idea for MONTHS, since one of the other players in his campaign gave it to me, honestly the scenes were basically done. I barely had to do anything to them, and the editing was super basic. (Hilariously someone left tags saying they loved the editing, and my only thought was "thank you, but I basically didn't do anything". Which I guess is a compliment to my blender skills if it makes them look well-edited.)
I especially loved pulling the reversal of the werewolf, where the full moon is monstrous and the new moon is safe. Also just creating Carrion's monster form in general was a lot of fun to do. I made several pieces of cc just for Carrion (his normal armor, his monster arm spikes), and did some whacky things to get him to look how I wanted. (There's actually two copies of monster Carrion standing there. One of them is just the tips of his toes the other is the rest of his body, sans toes. I did this so I could give him the split feet, which are actually illithid feet from BG3, converted by Shandir.)
I also just straight up painted + clone-stamped in a portion of his arm in the monster image, because it was clipping with his leg. I'm proud to say I don't think you can tell. And adding small lights for his eyes in that form was also a very fun little touch. (Honestly, the lighting in general was an adventure in this one. I hated it at the time, but looking back it was an interesting challenge.) I also learned what HDRIs are and how to use them, so that was a fun learning experience for me!
Final Thoughts
I made SO much progress in rendering this year, and I'm very proud of myself. I would love to whittle down my unfinished renders / not started render concepts to zero in 2025, but knowing me that's never going to happen. (ADHD, baby!!!) But I had a TON of fun this year and I'm so happy with all the things I made, be they in CAS, in build mode, or in blender.
And I'm glad you all were along for the ride!!! Whether you've been following me for years, or you just followed me last week, I'm glad you're here. While I'd make these things for myself, it's a thousand times more fun to share them with others, and knowing other people like my work just makes me more motivated to make it.

Next chapter of Twice Smitten, Thrice Damned (aka Helynna Valeria's no good very bad series of decades) is up!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/57314635/chapters/161275054
Commentary on why this took longer than expected (and looks nothing like the original draft chapter) beneath the cut. cw for discussion of chronic illness and spoilers for Mindshackle, I guess?
This will be a bit stream of consciousness, you have been warned.
When I started writing this, I had just recovered from a pretty bad bout of burnout and was so terrified the inspiration would desert me again that I crashed through drafting (what I thought at the time would be) the first five chapters. The original chapter 3 covered everything up to Cavlock's destruction and Valeria's subsequent vendetta against Emil Darkhammer, as well as the transition from enemies to crushes for her and Trazyn in an extremely condensed, summary format.
It had its moments, but the more I tried to edit it, the more I realized how pivotal events I had simply glossed over were, and how I felt it didn't do justice to the years-long slow burn between them. So, one chapter became three, and once I had wrangled that new structure, I returned back to (the new) chapter three, which now covered Helynna's early research into the necrons and burgeoning correspondence with Trazyn (aka enemies to penpals) in the form of six vignettes.
Easy, right? Wrong.
I have a running joke with my friends that if I say "a series of vignettes" they need to take the computer from me, sit me down, and explain that what I actually mean is a whole-ass multichap fic. You can perhaps see where this is going.
Once I realized the first "vignette" (lies) was double the length of the prior chapters, I realized that what I actually had down as chapter three was in fact chapters 3-8.
Which, fantastic! More Helynna! More fleshing out her retinue!
Except, well, the other reason I've been slower lately than when I came out of the 40K fanfic gate. (cw chronic illness)
I've been struggling with chronic illness and pain for a few years now, and unfortunately it's gotten to the point where I had to leave my job to focus on getting better. I can't tell you how many times I wished I could quit my job and write full-time, so in some ways, it might seem like a dream come true, except for the fact that what kept me from being able to work affects my ability to read and write in the exact same way. I'm not going to go into detail, but I don't see this changing in any meaningful way soon, and that's been hard to handle, to say the least.
Sometimes it feels like the world is passing me by, but all I can do is cherish the times I feel well enough to write, let go of unreasonable expectations, and do my best to enjoy the hobby I love.
If you're an artist struggling with chronic illness and/or pain, I see you, and you and your art are no less valuable because of it. Whatever you create is worth waiting for, and only you can do it. There is no deadline for joy, no mandatory update timeline for happiness. It's hard to internalize, I know, but it's the truth.
Having long-term projects like this one keep me going, and I'm so happy other people seem to enjoy it as well! It might be a long, slow ride, but it's one I'm excited to take together. <3

I lost the request and this dumb app doesn’t let me edit drafts?!?!111 anyway, IMMA DO IT 🙏😏
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
You both were fucked up. You don’t even know how it happened! You both were on a mission to hunt down Bucciarati’s squad. You got taken down first when the cars crashed; then Ghiaccio when he stabbed his neck through the pole (and miraculously survived).
When you first woke up, you were both in the hospital, beds next to each other. Along with that, you could see them rolling in your (even worse) fucked up friends. You look around the room and see Ghiaccio not awake yet.
Later on while doing physical therapy to fix the damage that had been done, Ghiaccio woke up.
He ran around the entire hospital, screaming your name, looking everywhere for you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They had to pull him off of you.
He found you and quite literally would not get off of you
When they tried restraining him, he beat them up and ran away to go find Melone.
Next time you see him is in bed with him strapped up and a muzzle on his face (he attacked and bit someone)
For the first time in his very long life time, he apologized to you, even breaking down into sobs.
He thought he was gonna lose you; he genuinely did.
It scared him so much; you’re the love of his life, he thought about you being his husband one day.
Never in my life can I envision him being emotional; but he’d be emotional.
He’s angry at you for almost dying, and he’s angry at himself for letting you almost die.
Since you have permission to roam/see the rest of la squadra, he’ll ask you to update him on their condition.
Melone genuinely irritates him, but for once he was really scared for him too.
But you come first though (sorry melone :/)
Almost lost his vocal cords when his throat went through the pole, so he can’t yell and his voice is raspy
Believe it or not but he’s more lovey dovey than EVER.
Promises you once you two get out of the hospital you’re getting married; no buts no nuts no coconuts.

haaaaaai chaai (๑´>᎑<)~* i hope ur day/night has been treating you with the kindest of hands <3
🦦 , 🦨 & 🐈‍⬛ for the ask game !!
FAWN MY DARLING !! HELLO ≈
honestly the last few days have been so long and exhausting and i’ve made so many posts and drafts but i haven’t had the time to edit them ☹️ but thank you for your kind words fawn 🫂 i appreciate you sm !!
also tysm for the ask <333 i’ve already answered 🦦 and here’s the link .•° i’ll be answering for 🦨 and 🐈‍⬛ ≈
also, includes multiple dr’s btw
🦨 : SOFT SKUNK . . . what are a few of your favorite memories in your desired reality? what kind of emotion to these memories bring about? who else is in these memories?
for my BETTER CR —
— going to a hozier concert with my boyfriend and singing the lyrics to every. single. song. and also, being filmed by our friends when hozier’s singing Would That I during the lyrics “i fell in love with the fire long ago” because i ADORE those lyrics and i want to see a candid moment of he and i when that lyric comes on because i just Know that our expressions are gonna be so full of love and happiness and ajdhdjskfjke i’m blushing i need to cuddle him right right now
— when my entire family was still asleep after a late night and i woke up really early for some reason . so i chose to just get up and start my day, i made myself some chai and went to sit in my backyard on the white metal garden chairs plus the small table. i took my current book i was reading as well as my journal and i just sat there enjoying the morning, the neighbours cat came and curled up against my ankles and i felt so at peace and relaxed and i was just taking in every little detail of the morning from the way the sun rays were shining through the branches of the trees or the dapples of dew drops against the grass blades or the cold little touch of the cats nose against my toes , everything was serenity
for my MARAUDERS DR —
— huddling with mary under the covers during a thunderstorm in first year. it was the first thunderstorm we’d every experienced away from home and usually, mary and i enjoy the sound of rain but the fact that we were eleven, and homesick, and while we had the other girls in our dorm, we’d already befriended each other.. so we just pushed our beds together and huddled under the blankets and counted the gaps between the thunder and lightning, fingers laced and tightening with every crash bang of the weather, we brought comfort to each other that night, so much so that i think of her whenever i smell the scent of a coming storm, she’s my storm catching companion
— regulus teaching me how to waltz on new year’s eve after we both ditched slughorn’s party and came to the abandoned alchemy classroom where we hide out, being unable to look away from my feet and regulus having to tilt my chin up so that i could face him as it was the “proper way” to waltz, the flustering embarrassment i got when we accidentally bumped our heads together and then i proceeded to make him re-bump our foreheads once more to prevent us from growing horns . (an old wives superstition that my mother believed in.. don’t ask) . the warmth that crept up my neck when regulus dipped me and i could feel his grip on my waist tighten and immediately realising that things would not be the same after tonight .. and after that KISS? yeh.. they certainly weren’t
for my ARROWVERSE DR —
— sneaking onto the roof of my childhood house with my big brother and secretly drinking bundaberg (an australian non-alcoholic fizzy drink !!) it was a quiet evening, the sun was setting and the cicadas were buzzing from the back of our property, we’d sat on this flat part of our attic roof and looked towards the city as we drank the soft drinks that we weren’t allowed to be drinking as per our training regimen , it was so peaceful and yet exciting at the same time, my brother always had a knack for making life feel peaceful yet exciting, i remember he was drinking the piña colada flavour while i took the pink coloured drink (which i believe was blood orange flavoured . but i just took it cause it was pink haha)
— waking up to barry giving me my morning matcha after a night spent at STAR LABS , a meta human attack had caved in part of the roof of the ccpd station, and as a result, all the upper levels were structurally unsound and needed to be evacuated (which , they could have told me sooner jfc like if barry hadn’t been there, one of the lights would have fallen on my head..) anyway - barry and i essentially had no office/lab to work out of so we took what was necessary and set up camp at star labs, commandeering the monitors and desks , but we didn’t get much work done and spent the night watching classic musicals because barry is appalled that i haven’t seen them and we ended up falling asleep on the desk itself, i think i slept on his arm or shoulder but i can’t remember, all i remember is barry gently shaking me awake after the best sleep i had in years with a smile and a hot cup of matcha plus a blueberry danish, i was a bit frozen to be honest, because he felt too good to be true at that moment, but he was real, and i kind of realised once again just how much he cares
for my KPOP DR —
— having a comeback around the same time as enhypen and our groups got together to react to each other’s comebacks, we watched the mv’s and then we did album listening parties and we just spent the whole night talking about the creative process and discussing how and why we made certain choices in our lyrics or our production and it was honestly a really memorable night, mainly because it’s one of those moments where we get hit with this wave of appreciation. like . yeah, this is my life, i get to do this for a living , and i’m good at it !! it was a night of analysing and appreciating the method of music and the creation of songs and the process of lyricism , basically a night where artists could geek out together about being artists
— it was three years after we’d debuted, me and two of my other members hadn’t really seen our family in person in a while , only short visits if we had any health problems and such (mariah was the exception since she lives in seoul) also i’ll do a member intro soon!! and our company surprised us for our third year anniversary by flying in our family’s and letting us have a whole three-day break to spend with them, all of us took our families out to dinner and we showed them around the company building and gave them a private concert of their favourite songs, our company filmed our reactions for the fans/the content but thankfully they stopped filming after that and gave us our privacy but it was honestly such an emotional moment to be able to see my parents and my little brother again after so long
🐈‍⬛ : BALANCED BLACK CAT . . . have you made yourself overpowered (no judgement btw) or are there aspects of your being that counteract your powerful nature?
for my MARAUDERS DR —
i wouldn’t necessarily say i’m overpowered but i do excel in a lot of areas (mostly areas that i find interesting) and in basically every other field i’m just above average and do solid work which . is quite similar to my cr student-self , i have a natural talent in charms and ancient runes, but i have an insatiable interest in alchemy, and due to my wand core being a lock of mermaid hair, i am undoubtedly excellent at elemental magic. additionally i’m decent at my other subjects and i enjoy things like dada, potions, and transfiguration . herbology and history of magic are a bit of a drag but the friends that i sit with make it worth it, there are subjects that i struggle with when it comes with getting marks, because my brain works one way while the education system requires it to work in another, subjects like arithmancy for example. but unfortunately i really like the content , even though it’s hard, and i force myself to keep trying. i’m more likely to drop HoM than arithmancy - just because it’s hard doesn’t mean i don’t like it, i’d choose hard over boring any day, then there are the easy subjects that are fun, feel like a free period, divination and muggle studies . but what i excel at the most, is flying, one of the best seekers gryffindor has ever seen, i will undoubtedly be outshined by my nephew harry potter when he joins hogwarts, but until his time, i revel in the spotlight of every quidditch match, so much so that the student body has created nicknames for my signature moves and tricks on the broom .. james is for sure the star of the show as the captain and lead chaser, and i like it that way, bcs when it comes for my moment to shine, when it comes to catching the snitch, that’s all i need applause for
for my ARROWVERSE DR —
considering i’m a human in a world with super people, living in the meta-human hub of the world - central city - where even my boyfriend has powers.. yeah, no. definitely not overpowered . but there’s beauty in being one of the only humans in the justice league, while i love the idea of having powers in other realities, i prefer being a human-hero, a more boots-on-the-ground type, someone who takes care of petty crime, infiltration, covert operations, stealth missions, etc . and truth be told, i haven’t shied away from giving myself an incredible arsenal of skills and weaponry to make up for my lack of meta-human abilities , i was trained since childhood by slade wilson, i was an asis operative for four years and then i joined the police force in starling city, and then central city - i have an active career where i must keep myself in shape anyway. i have incredible agility and reflexes, and a whole plethora of tactics and techniques that make me stand out as a hero/vigilante, i excel at ambush attacks so much so that i became nicknamed The Ambush by some people, my usual weapons include throwing knives/ring daggers, grappling hooks, a taser-end staff that separates into escrimas, a crossbow that expands into a proper bow, and claws built into my gloves. aside from this artillery, i rely on hand to hand combat but i won’t ever hesitate to use a gun if i have one handy (i am a cop by day..)

Numb
That’s all you felt, your whole body numb to the touch. Felt like you were floating, skin no longer touching the ground, only the stiff breeze that would ghost through you. You weren’t even sure if you were breathing at this moment.
Eclipse
It taunted you as your eyes stared at the heavens above. Cold, wet tears streamed down your dull blue cheeks, while another dull blue face stared lifelessly at the darkened sky. Lifeless eyes that used to hold so much love and admiration within his glowing golden eyes.
Shaking
Your body was shaking, hands unable to stop the tremors that reached your fingertips. Lips quivering as you tried to hold back the scream that wanted to rip from your throat, the whimpers of pain that built up in your chest, and were just waiting for the scale to completely tip before you crumble.
The waves were crashing loudly against your boulder, it almost felt like they were shaking your rocky asylum. There were only four bodies stationed on the jagged stone along with a burning fire in the near distance. Everything felt like a realistic nightmare, something your mind conjured to tear you away from the sugary sweet dreams that you would slip into. But this wasn’t a nightmare or dream, this was reality. Something you constantly had to remind yourself before your brain could trick you into ignorance.
There was a ringing in your downturned ears that soon started to pick up choked sobs that flicked your ears at attention. You looked away from the darkened sky and down at your three companions.
Neteyam. Once alive and full of energy, gentle touches, and commanding tones were all left behind and just a corpse with his head laying on your lap was left behind. One hand cradled his cheek, wishing to feel movement or heat while the other brushed his braids, something you always did when he rested his head on your lap. You wished to see his easy smile one more time, just for a moment, you needed the image fresh in your brain.
Tsireya was the one quietly crying, her hands holding onto Neteyam’s legs. You wanted to comfort the girl, this is probably the first time she’s had to feel the pain of losing a close relationship, the Metkayina clan not forced to see the horror of war every day for the past few years. She was a sweet girl, a caring soul, she didn’t deserve to witness this pain.
Lo’ak was the last one of your group. He was staring toward the burning and drowning ship, you weren’t sure why, but taking note that Jake and Neytiri were missing, along with Spider, Kiri, and Tuk not around; the only answer you could think of was the ship. He dropped to his knees, eyes staring down at his dark red palms, palms covered in Neteyam’s blood as he tried to save him. He took another look at the ship before facing you and Tsireya.
“I- I have to- I have to help them.” Lo’ak took stuttering breaths.
You saw Tsireya shake her head, barely heard the pleas for Lo’ak to stay on the rock with the thre- with the two of you. But you knew Lo’ak, you knew that even if his dad told him to stay, he would follow him to the ends of Pandora, just like Neteyam did with him.
He knelt in front of the shaking girl, a hand coming up to hold her cheek for a second before he walked to you. Both hands rested at the side of your head, his fingers seeping into your braids with his extra finger touching your jaw.
“I’ll be back. I promise.” Neteyam used to tell you that all the time when he was allowed a position in the raids.
Lo’ak pulled your head forward and his lips met your forehead, and they were held there for almost a minute before he pulled away and jumped off the rock and into the crashing waves. Leaving behind two shaking and emotionally wrecked girls that held onto a corpse of a friend and loved one.
“He’ll be back,” you choked out to Tsireya, “they’ll all be back.” Reassuring the both of you, needing just that tiny bit of hope to stay above the dangerous waves. Your hand continued its comforting motion of pushing Neteyam’s braids from his face.

Pandora forest
Your feet jumped from branch to branch, the ground below leaving behind a trail of bioluminescent spots before they disappeared. Light chuckles floated from your parted lips and into the open air, the breeze able to carry the sound further out. The nightlife of the forest filled your ears, something you’ll never get used to, in a good way.
You slowed down after having ran and leaped for a while, needing a minute to take in your surroundings. Your chest moved up and down pretty fast with your mouth panting for air, and fists landing on your hips to rest. Your ears flicked at each little noise, but you were trying to find the specific sound you wanted to hear, nose twitching in the air for the right scent combo.
A twig snapped and you knew already you found him. You crouched down, body low to the bark as you followed the direction the noise came from, not wanting to spook your target. You jumped to a branch below yours and surveyed the surrounding flora. You grabbed your bow and nocked an arrow in the string and waited with bated breath for any new signs. Another twig snapped, the opposite direction you just came from, you were on high alert now.
You counted in your head, to keep your heart steady and to count when the next noise might occur. It wasn’t until twenty did another sound appear, this one much closer now. You thought you were ahead in the game but looked like you just lost so you put away your arrow and sat on the soft moss, waiting for the boy.
Lost in your thoughts, staring ahead into the open air, the feeling of two hands landing on your shoulders almost made you jump and that would end up resulting in your possible death due to gravity.
“I win.” A high-pitched voice spoke into your ear.
“Neteyam!” You twisted to look at his boyish grin, “don’t sneak up on me! I’ve told you multiple times!”
He just laughed at your raised voice and moved to sit beside you, thighs touching and fingers just an inch away from touching. You wanted to make a move but were too scared so you stayed content with your slim fingers ghosting near the other.
It was well past the eclipse and both you and Neteyam knew you shouldn’t be running around in the forest at night, but it was always so peaceful and sometimes the only time either of you could be alone together without parents or siblings hovering or clan duties getting in the way.
The two of you could just get lost in nature and each other and it was the most magical thing you got to experience.
“Are you excited for tomorrow?” You voiced to the silence.
It took a minute before he responded, “nervous, but yes. I’m excited.” His pinky tapped yours.
Tomorrow a couple of young hunters would complete their iknimaya and finally earn their ikrans and then later that night they would go through uniltaron, the dream hunt. You originally were going to join Neteyam in the rites of passage, but you felt you weren’t prepared enough, so you decided to wait a bit longer. At first, you were embarrassed to tell Neteyam that you were going to take longer, but he reassured you that it was completely fine and that he was proud of you with either decision you made. It made your heart grow with love.
“Should probably head back. Long day ahead of you.” You stood from your seated position and threw your bow over your shoulders, waiting for Neteyam to follow your actions.
You looked down when you noticed he was still seated and to your shock he was already looking up at you, an easy smile adoring his stunning features. He did look like his mother, a stunning woman with a strong will and a loyal heart.
“What?” You whispered the question.
He gave a light shake of his head, his smile never fading, “nothing. Just… just appreciating.” And he grabbed his bow and stood up, eyes level with each other. Both standing at around six feet and a few inches, neither hitting your growth spurt yet. You don’t know how you’ll feel when Neteyam is taller than you one day, even if it's just by an inch or two.
The two of you stood face to face, no one talking, only watching. Eyes danced over the other's features, memorizing every stripe and every glowing dot gracing their blue skin. If you could freeze time, you would do it at this moment, not wanting to leave the quiet night. You so badly wanted to reach up and caress Neteyam’s cheek but held yourself.
Instead, you cleared your throat and broke eye contact, “race you home?” And the smile he flashed gave you your answer and you took off without a warning.
Giggles and shrieks of joy followed you two home all the way, music to your ears.
-
You were still numb, your ears were still ringing, and your stomach grumbled but you wouldn’t touch a single fruit. It still didn’t feel real, none of this felt real. The battle was over, the injured were being tended to, and families were reuniting with tears and hugs. But your family, your family was grieving and preparing for a funeral that none of you thought would come for many moons in the future.
You just sit in a corner with your knees pulled up to your chest, arms wrapped tightly around them, your head resting atop the joints, staring into the void. You haven’t moved from the tiny spot since you all came back to your pod, Jake and Neytiri leaving with Neteyam’s body to bring to Ronal and have him prepared for his final living goodbye. Kiri and Tuk were huddled together in another area of the pod, Tuk sitting in her lap with Kiri stroking her hair and whispering soft words. Lo’ak sat outside with his feet in the water. He probably wished Tsireya was with him but she was pulled away by her family to help with preparations. You wanted to be there for him, someone needed to be there for him, he thought Neteyam’s death was his doing when it wasn’t; it was the sky people’s war that did it.
You finally found that bit of strength to move, Lo’ak needed someone at this moment and you knew Neteyam would want his brother to know that he loved him. With cracked joints you finally moved from your spot, arms wrapped around your waist for a phantom comfort and you walked slowly towards Lo’aks’ hunched figure. Your feet stop just a few steps away from him, just watching how his back muscles moved with his breathing, how his head would move slightly when he would focus on something else.
You didn’t say anything as you sat next to him. He didn’t say anything as his eyes took notice of your appearance. No one said anything, just two sets of golden eyes staring out at the dimming sky that was slowly dipping into the endless ocean.
You took the first step, one arm reaching out to gently touch the bicep close to you and then you slowly glided the hand down his arm until your palm fell atop his knuckles. Your four fingers settled in the open space between his five digits, a light squeeze was all you gave, but still no words.
“I’m sor-“ “It’s not your fault. None of it.” You immediately stopped him.
Silence once again.
Hands still touching.
Waves playfully pushing and pulling.
You leaned your head against his shoulder, Lo’aks falling atop yours after a second. Then you moved your hand off his and threw it around his waist with your other following, wanting to give him warm physical comfort. Knowing a hug was something he needed at this moment, to feel grounded, to feel loved, to feel seen.
An abrupt cough makes your head turn over your shoulders. Jake and Neytiri stood in the opening, both their faces littered with cuts and stitches, eyes darker and dull. You pulled away from Lo’ak and stood from your spot, walking over to the two taller na’vi.
“We must prepare.” Was all Neytiri said before holding her hand out.
High camp
The air was thick with tension, everyone on high alert for the day, no, not just the day. Everyone has been on alert for the past two years.
The sky people have brought war back to Pandora, back to the Omitikaya people and your home. The demons bring fire to burn the trees and flora, to bring extinction to the animals that roam freely. Their metal weapons are much stronger than your bows, and many people die or are injured each day during a raid or battle.
Jake Sully is very high-strung, he’s quick to snap at someone out of line, and even more angered when the people he’s yelling at are his children. Neteyam and Lo’ak stand with their tails between their legs and heads tilted down, Neteyam receiving the harsher words that struck his heart.
You would watch from afar, hands rubbing your banshee in comforting motions as your heart broke at the pain written across their faces. You just waited, waited until Neteyam was dismissed by his father and he would head immediately to find you and distract you with his pretty smile.
“How is palï?” His own hands stroked down the side of her neck, soft purrs heard from her throat. You chuckled, “happy now that you are here.” Just like you were happier he was now with you.
Your smile dropped just a bit when you remembered a few minutes ago, “is everything…is everything okay?” His hand slowed then stopped before dropping to his side, eyes facing away from you.
“Just Lo’ak doing dumb shit again and me getting my head ripped off for not keeping a close eye on him.” “Hmm.”
Men and Women were moving to and fro in the caved holding. Some were slow with their heads bent down as they conversed with the person beside them, or warriors carried their bows with their heads held high as they rushed past everyone. People were going in and out of Mo’at’s tent, many exiting with wrappings covering wounds they gained during the war effort. You could hear the faint sounds of ikrans screeching in the distance mixed with the gleeful giggles of na’vi children.
“Would you like to go somewhere quiet?” You abruptly asked.
Neteyam’s ears twitched at your question, eyes widening just a bit but then softening with a tiny curve of his lips. A meek nod was all you needed before you wrapped a hand around his wrist and pulled him behind you and further into the cool mountain. It was a small area further back, the shadows helping in keeping the carved-out piece a secret to one who isn’t curious, but you were one curious cat.
Since your parent's passing, you would travel through high camp in silence, a ghost among the living just trying to survive by yourself. You lived with the Sully’s since they were like a second family to you, but being around them, seeing the love they have for each other and how much they care about everyone’s well-being, it just twisted your heart. So at night when everyone was asleep and the camp was quiet, you would sneak out and roam around, just needing to be alone and wallow in pain and you needed to find a place within the camp where you could step into the shadows and disappear just for a few hours. And you found it.
With Neteyam still being pulled behind by you when you abruptly stopped, his chest ran into your back making the both of you stumble for a moment. Light giggles escaped without thought before you reluctantly let your grip slide from his skin, but you didn’t get far before Neteyam reached out on his own and intertwined your hands together.
You felt warm all over at the simple action.
“Ma ‘teyam, I’ve- I’ve been missing you. As of late.” You dipped your head down, flustered at the sudden words leaving your mouth. It wasn’t a declaration of love, though it was in your ears.
“I’ve been missing you too, ma tanhì (my star)” Almost a whisper to the winds was his reply, but a whisper that blew near your ear making it twitch at the caressing touch.
Involuntarily your eyelids fluttered closed and a breathy sigh left your chest. The silence only grew in tension when a finger was hooked under your chin and pushed your face up, eyes focusing in on the speckles of glowing dots dancing along Neteyam’s face and body. Your own personal sky of stars to gaze upon.
“(Y/n), there’s something I’ve been wanting to confess to you for some time now. But it seems you gave me the perfect opportunity, and I will try to say the words before they evade my mind.” His thumb swiped over your chin, along with a swift feeling of him touching your bottom lip before it was gone too soon.  All you could do was tilt your head with your eyes firmly set on Neteyam’s, waiting intently to hear what’s been on his mind for this long.
He licked his lips, eyes moving side to side, “as you know it’s been a while since I’ve become one of the People.” Another simple nodding of your head, “I as well.”
“Yes. And we both have fashioned our bows out the branches of the home tree, both of us mighty warriors and aiding our clan in a time of crisis-” “Neteyam I’m well aware of these events. I’m living through them, along with them added to my songcord.” A mindless giggle showed your delight in this scene.
Neteyam gave a huff, “yes, yes. Now if you’ll allow me to speak before I lose my small ounce of bravery-” “Yes, sorry. Continue… sorry.”
A hand still twinged with yours and his thumb ran over the back of your hand, “Since we’ve become one of the People, and crafted our bows, the only thing left is to… is to find a mate.” You sucked in a breath.
He wanted to find a mate.
You understood, courting could take months and usually you’re not officially mated before Eywa until you are a full-fledged adult, so there was still plenty of time for the both of you. But hearing that he’s thinking of someone who he wants to court,  hurts like a knife being twisted between your ribs.
“Have… have you,” you had to swallow past the thump in your throat, “have you already chosen. The one you wish to begin courting?” You needed to step away from Neteyam’s intoxicating self.
You tried stepping away discreetly, but before you were even two steps away Neteyam pulled you right back in, even closer than before. Toe to toe, chest to chest, your whole body so close to touching but only an inch of air separated your bodies from molding together. The hold he had on your hand didn’t loosen, only held tighter, like he was scared you could run away at any moment. During this discussion, you wished to vanish into the forest and not come back until sunrise.
“I have. I’ve had my eye on her for years, long before my rites of passage. She’s very special to me, someone who’s been by my side through many of my hardships, lifting me back up to the light from the darkness I was walking towards.” His eyes stayed on your linked hand, “she is beloved by my family, each one of them having a special relationship with her already, so I don’t have to worry about them turning her away,” he breathed a laugh. “She is a fine warrior, her skills growing each day, and might even surpass my sa’nok (mother) one day.”
Neteyam took the final step. Hands squished between your bodies, your chest touching, and every breath you took caused your top to brush against Neteyam’s chest and move it out of place just a hair. Your breaths mingled with your lips in front of each other, it took every last bit of strength within you to keep your eyes trained on his face rather than his tempting lips.
“Neteyam-” “I hope you are understanding what I’m trying to say.”
Your will broke and your eyes dropped before meeting his eyes again, “I think it best if you say it aloud. I’m a bit thick in the head.” A comment Neteyam has made to you before.
He wetted his lips, “(Y/n), ma tanhì (my star), would you allow me the honor of courting you, to eventually in the near future, become my mate for life?” He almost vibrated with energy, nervousness or anticipation, or even both was your conclusion.
“Neteyam, ma atan (my light), I would cherish nothing more and it would be a pleasure to become your mate.”
-
The air felt still, thick that you almost suffocated from a simple intake of air. The water felt still, even though you rode on the back of your ilu, ripples following the creature. It felt like everyone was holding their breath, worried that even the most simple release of air would cause something further to shift in the world. But nothing worse could happen, not in your mind, your worst nightmare came true and you still can’t process it.
Jake and Neytiri were at the front of your group with Tuk seated behind her mother, Lo’ak and Kiri with Spider behind followed up the rear and you were at the very back. Everyone was painted with white stripes down their face, Neytiri fashioned with a woven headpiece and the necklace Neteyam wore when he died. A hand went to your neck, another intricate woven piece of jewelry that Neteyam would wear, it also happened to be the one he wore the night he asked to court you.
The tears dripped down your face, you didn’t make an effort to wipe them away, they would just keep coming.
Many of the Metkayina stood in the shallow waters of the Cove of Ancestors, further away from your family. You saw the familiar faces near the front, the Olo’eyktan and the Tsahík, both of them stood tall and held themselves high. You saw the tear-stained faces of Tsireya and Ao’nung along with Roxo just off to the side of the leaders.
The ilu tugging Neteyam’s leaf finally stopped at its designated spot, silently telling all of you that this was the end. Jake, Neytiri, Tuk, and Lo’ak slid off their creatures and into the water, treading themselves on each side of his body, his mother and sister on the left with his father and brother to the right. You so badly wanted to join them, wanted to touch the boy you loved so badly one final time before his body was taken away from the physical plane. But you stayed back, you weren’t his mate, you were just the girl he was courting, his girlfriend- something that Jake said was between the stages of friend and mate; you were just a friend that left their home behind for a boy that stole your heart and made you a part of a loving and protective family.
So it was just you, Kiri- who you thought should have joined the others but didn’t push her into it, and Spider who watched his blood-related family give their final caresses to his skin. The kisses to his forehead by Neytiri, the fingers reaching out to his for the hand that rested atop his shoulder then a feather-light touch to his cheek by Tuk, the hand that patted down Neteyam’s tied back braids by Lo’ak- something Neteyam used to always do on the younger boy, and Jake. Jake, who still seemed in shock, that he didn’t make for a comforting gesture.
Once Neteyam was free of the giant palm leaf, Tuk and Lo’ak moved further back to where the three of you stayed. Jake and Neytiri shared a look before taking their breath and diving under the water with Neteyam between them.
You slid off the ilu saddle and floated on the right side of Lo’ak, Tuk as always was beside Kiri if it wasn’t her mother. With the water stinging your eyes just a bit, you watched as Jake and Neytiri swam down, down, down until they were just above the glowing anemone and they released their hold on their boy. They kept themselves afloat while his body succumbed to gravity or the pull toward the Great Mother, and once they touched his deep blue skin, he was covered in golden glowing light before his body was completely gone.
If you weren’t submerged under water you knew the tears would be running at the speed of a waterfall, your nose clogging with snot, and your throat choking up causing hiccups and stuttering to your breath. With a glance to your left, the sight before you broke you even further. Lo’ak, with his left hand, held out for his brother to take, was choking out sobs that were silenced by the water, only the air bubbles leaving his open mouth told you of his cries to the Great Mother.
Swiftly you reached out and linked your hands together, he needed someone to ground him from slipping away and you just needed to feel living flesh.
-
You couldn’t sleep, sleep had been avoiding you for weeks since your arrival to Awa'atlu, always tossing and turning on your mat. Eventually, you started to leave the mauri when the darkness would slip away through your fingers, finding yourself either sitting on the roped walkway with your feet swaying in the water or you would venture towards the sandy beaches and stare out into the open water.
You weren’t sure when he noticed your absence, but one night when you walked to the beach, you heard footsteps that were muffled by the grains on the floor and the push and pull of the water. Your heart rate picked up, you didn’t have any weapons on your person, and you chose to leave your knife with the others. But your panic died down when you saw the noise coming from someone who wouldn’t lay a harmful finger on you, but for sure would punch someone just looking at you wrong.
“Ma ‘teyam.” You all but sighed as he got closer.
He instantly pulled you into his arms, one arm around your waist and the other pushing your head into the crook of his neck. Your limbs wrapping tightly along his waist, your hearts beating as one, chest to chest. Fingers started to run through the free strands of your black hair, tiny circles by the pads of his digits.
“What is wrong ma tanhì?” He murmured by your pinned back ear.
You huffed a sigh, unintentionally tickling his skin, “sleep escapes me. No dreams enter my mind, only darkness and even that leaves me to my thoughts.”
He hummed, hands continuing their rhythmic motions, giving your bodies a light sway with the wind. Then he just stopped, hands landing on your biceps giving a light push away. His eyes held so much love within his tender gaze, “why don’t we go for a swim? We could star gaze, we haven't done it for a while.” And an instant smile split your face.
The two of you floated on your backs in the middle of the water, the water safe within the mauri pods. The quiet night was the only thing surrounding the both of you, the water was still with only a few ripples here and there causing a push to your bodies. Your backs floated atop the darkened water, hands clasped together to keep from drifting apart, braids and loose strands snaking around your heads as two sets of golden yellow eyes focused on the glowing stars above.

One Year Later
The memory vanished into the air from your mind, and the last thing you felt was your heart growing warm at the sight of Neteyam’s breathtaking smile before he pulled the both of you into the cool water.
Your legs were hugged to your chest with your thin arms wrapped around them tight, your chin digging into your kneecaps while your eyes stared out into the open water. You thought about going in, either to look at the stars as if he was floating beside you or to drown yourself and join him with the Great Mother. You knew the latter would win more in this situation, so you kept yourself grounded and forced your mind to go blank, the lull in the water helps.
You shifted a hand through the sand beside you, the texture feeling nice on your skin. Eventually, you got bored, but you didn’t want to head back, so you just laid down and let the scratchy grains cling to your skin and burrow into your hair. You turned on your side, back facing the homes with you facing the swaying trees, but you let your imagination run.
You pretended that you were lying beside Neteyam, both facing each other with only an inch of separate space. A hand from both of you resting in the middle, fingers doing a mindless dance of touching and curling, bringing smiles to your faces. You would move closer, your hand that lay on the ground would make contact with his stomach, and his muscles would flex automatically with the graze. Neteyam would move his head closer, a quick bump of your nose, giggles spilling from your lips. He would throw an arm over your waist, knuckles gliding along your back, and you would lift your hand from the ground, let your palm rest upon his plump cheek, and thumb would stroke the stripes decorating his skin. And you would clear the final milometer of air, lips a breath away, you would look into his piercing eyes and with all the bravery you could muster, would whisper the words only meant for his ears.
“Neteyam… ma ‘teyam… I see-”
“(Y/n)?”
Your hand dropped from the air and sunk into the cool sand, you didn’t even bother to turn and face the approaching voice, you already knew who it was. It was always you and one other person who would leave the home for hours and wallow in pain.
You felt his body heat, skin just barely flicking over yours. You felt his eyes on you, you knew they would drip with pity and pain for you, and you didn’t want it. You were a mighty warrior, you withstood your cuts and bruises and persevered in the battle, even your mental ones.
“(Y/n)... I’m here- I-” “Lo’ak. Stop.” You closed your eyes, the tears making a comeback. You still kept your back to Lo’ak, not finding the mighty warrior in yourself to withstand this battle, instead shrinking away from the fight.
He didn’t say anything again, you didn’t say anything again, and the silence enveloped the bubble. With the sound of shuffling you thought he got up and headed back to sleep, probably knowing how guarded you are these days, but he didn’t leave he walked around you and laid beside you.
With the past year, you’ve closed yourself off, built a stone wall high to the heavens, and wrapped around the world. Only allowing small slips into the cracks, sea shell collecting with Tuk, enjoying the flora and fauna with Kiri, weaving baskets and jewelry with Neytiri in the mauri, and you’ll do whatever you can find with Jake. With Lo’ak, there was something that pulled the both of you a tiny bit closer. Be it the Great Mother, grief, Neteyam, or all of it together, you and Lo’ak always found each other in times of comfort.
You peeked your eyes open, Lo’ak watching your every breath, an arm pillowing his head with the other hand in the open space. It felt weird that he was in the same position you imagined Neteyam, but you didn’t think anything of it.
“(Y/n), I miss him. I miss my big brother.” Lo’ak’s voice was small, cracking on the words him and brother.
You didn’t speak, something you often did these days, you just linked your sandy hands together. You gave a squeeze knowing it would silently say to him, ‘I miss him too’.
Before…everything, you were a pretty touchy person. At least when you were super close and comfortable around the individual. And because you were comfortable around the Sullys you would express your love through all forms, touch sometimes being the easiest with the quick access. But after- after he was gone, you reclined into yourself, like you were waining off the feeling of na’vi skin. But Lo’ak was someone you felt naturally drawn to just touch, and it made you hurt because you always felt that way about Neteyam. Sometimes you didn’t want to be separated for even a second, needing to have a finger touching or your tail grazing by his legs.
You were worrying a bit that Lo’ak might be taking your intimate moments, your touches as something they weren’t. You loved Lo’ak, but only as a brother. Neteyam always filled the spaces in your heart. Friend, partner, ‘girlfriend’… future mate, your future husband. No one could fill those holes, they’ll always be empty until you die.
“Have you visited?”
You blinked your eyes, focusing back on the present. Lo’ak was just watching you, waiting for some type of response to his question. You heard him, faintly, but still heard.
You didn’t say anything, the quiet your nonverbal answer.
“I haven’t either,” his thumb ran over your knuckles, “I’m too scared.”
“Why scared?” A hushed whisper.
He shrugged, “might argue with me or something. Tell me it’s my fault, which is t-“
“False. Sky people are at fault.” A constant reminder from you to him.
Silence once again. Talking always takes too much energy for you.
“Would you be willing to visit him, together?” Lo’aks’s question drifted into the air.
“When we are ready, we will go. Together.”
-
Two Years Later
“I would like to visit Payakan.”
Lo’ak sat up from his lying position and looked down at you, his head blocking the blinding sun rays. You just peered up at him, face completely neutral.
“W-why?” His feathered brows furrowed, “it’s not safe.”
You cocked your head, striped brow raised, “never stopped you before.” A ghost of a smile mixed with some teasing.
Lo’ak scuffed and rolled his eyes at the remark, but you saw the smile. He looked at the open water for a moment before looking back at you. You could see the tiny gears turning in his head, probably weighing some pros and cons to your proposal.
He stood up and held a hand out, his answer to your request.
With a firm grasp, you let him pull you to your feet, his growing muscles pulling you against the gravity causing a light crash with your chests meeting. His free arm wrapped tight around your back to keep you from stumbling, it caused your breath to stutter and get caught in your throat before you cleared it.
“Lead the way, mighty warrior.” A quirk of your head caused Lo’ak to move, arm off your waist but the hand still held in yours.
He called his ilu with a yelp and grabbed the saddle. You didn’t bother calling yours, you still weren’t the best at riding even after living here for two years. Neteyam usually helped with your teaching and would have you ride with him when going out. You didn’t bother with learning further, not wanting to explore without him.
“(Y/n),” Lo’ak grabbed your bicep, “come on.”
He slid on the saddle with you just behind. His left hand holding the bar tight before looking over his shoulder and tapping your thigh with his right hand, “hold on tight. Breathe deep.” And he went under.
The crystal clear water past the reef felt like a whole new world. Almost nothing for the eye to see except for a few rocks that broke the surface, but other than that everything was below the surface.
“Where’s Payakan?” You whispered in his ear, it twitched against your nose.
“Uh, should be around here. Sometimes he finds me before I do.” His head looked side to side, trying to find the giant tulkun in the vast ocean.
You wrapped your arms around Lo’ak’s abdomen and leaned your head between his shoulder blades. Your ear could faintly hear this heart beating as he touched your forearm with his fingers, his heart speeding up just a bit.
“Is Payakan friendly?” Voice slightly muffled.
“Yeah. As long as you don’t provoke him or offend him. But he’s my spirit brother, he’ll accept you happily.”
“The sea gives and the sea takes.” Words you heard from Tsireya during lessons.
Your heart lurched at the phrase. Lo’ak lost Neteyam to the rocky seas with a fire burning in the distance but gained a Metkayina spirit brother in the calm and clear seas. Eywa must keep a balance of life, but this wasn’t a balance.
“Oh! (Y/n), look!” He eagerly tapped your arm and pointed to the horizon.
In the blink of an eye, a tulkun appears before the both of you, its eyes watching intently. It made some noises of communication, out of happiness or a threat, you couldn’t tell. But Lo’ak happily slid from the saddle and swam beside his eye and gave a very open hug to the creature. Its eyes closed and hummed a higher pitch, happy.
“(Y/n), come.” Lo’ak held a hand out for you.
You quickly joined the two, Lo’ak’s hand moving to place yours along the tough skin of the animal. A smile was pulled at your lips, you weren’t sure why, but you didn’t think too hard about it. You felt extremely happy for the first time in two years and you’ll absorb the feeling into your bones.
“Payakan, this is (Y/n). She’s part of my family.”
“Hello. Lo’ak speaks very highly of you. I’m grateful for the opportunity to meet you.” Your hand moved in soothing circles.
Another higher-pitched hum, “he likes you.”
Your attention away from Payakan focused on Lo’ak. He sat on the floating fin, hips and lower half submerged in the water with his torso and up dry. He held a delicate smile on his lips, small indents on either side. His eyes which were already focused on you looked gentle, his lids dropped just a bit, and his golden irises held a tiny spark.
It caused a shiver to run along your spine.
-
Three Years Later
Your lower half sat in the shallow waters of the beach. Water pushing and pulling, lapping at your body giving a gravitational pull, a pull that you resisted each time. Your hands would dance atop the surface, palms skimming the pleasant texture and fingers doing quick taps that cause a tiny plop.
You watched with fondness as Kiri lay on her stomach with her body submerged below the clear waters. One arm kept her upper body from dropping into the sand while the other ran through the still grains. Something so simple and she was mesmerized, you loved it.
With a turn of your head, you noticed two figures further down the beach, one teal and the other blue. Tsireya and Lo’ak. They were sitting beside each other, you couldn’t tell much about their conversation, neither giving off blatant expressions. They seemed to be making jewelry or carving, maybe both, each doing their own thing while just wanting to enjoy the other's company.
They looked happy, at peace. You felt glad for them.
“They make a good couple.” Kiri’s sudden voice causes you to jump a bit. You just nodded, “they do. Maybe they’ll mate when older. He’s been into her since we arrived.”
You couldn’t help but smile at the memory.
Everyone is tired and wishing for rest, hoping they grant uturu to your family. Neteyam and you automatically stand beside each other, fingers grazing as you walk to the formed crowd. With your curious eyes, you try and take in everything around you, from the people to the village, and it amazed you. And then with the perfect timing, you noticed a girl slipping into the water before making her way to the shores, and you heard a slight gasp. With a slight turn of your head, you noticed how Lo’ak couldn’t take his eyes off her, he was instantly fixated on the beauty.
You bumped your hand against Neteyam’s calling for his attention.
“It seems your brother has found a potential mate,” a quick chuckle, “if they allow.” Was all Neteyam followed up with.
“(Y/n), did you hear me?” Kiri’s fingers dug into your ribs.
You shifted away from a potential second attack, “no. Sorry, a memory came to mind.”
You ignored the eye roll she gave, “I said, but it seems like Lo’ak might have affection for someone new.”
A furrow came to your brows, “where are you hearing this? Do you not see the way he acts around Tsireya? He acts like a skxawng about… ninety percent of the time, and that’s just now. It used to be a bit higher.”
She licked her lips and her eyes dipped to the ground before meeting yours, “there’s something different…in the way, he looks at- his eyes hold something when he gazes upon you.” You couldn’t believe the words leaving Kiri’s mouth, “his eyes hold something when he gazes upon you.” She was wrong, simply wrong.
“You are wrong.” You shook your head at her absurdity, “Lo’ak doesn’t see me as anything other than another sister.”
She huffed, “(Y/n), I don’t know if you ever knew this, but when Lo’ak was younger he would tell me how he admired you. You probably thought nothing of it, but he would try to follow you around like a lost direhorse. I noticed the tiny scowls that came upon his face when Neteyam would steal away your attention. Plus he’s the only one you’re physically affectionate with besides-“
“I’m affectionate with all of you. Neteyam was extra special in my heart, he was my promised mate.” You started to get defensive.
She placed a hand on your shoulder, “yes, I understand. I just notice how the two of you hold each other in the night, Lo’ak holds you firmly to his chest with his arm over your waist and you will have your face tucked under his jaw.”
Your ears twitched, “I’m just trying to say, be careful. The both of you. Someone is gonna get hurt, and we’re just starting to heal our wounds.” Were her last wise words before standing up and walking away.
-
Three Years and Five Months Later
“I want to go to the cove and see Neteyam.”
You turned your head to the side, and bits of sand scratched your skin. Lo’ak kept his eyes on the sky, hands clasped over his stomach. You looked away when he didn’t meet your gaze.
“You are ready?”
“Not really, but I need to see him again.” It seemed like he had more to say so you waited, “are you ready?”
This time you knew he looked at you, the movement caused your ears to twitch at attention.
“No. But his face has started to blur and I lost the sound of his voice, his laugh. I miss it all, so it must be time.” You pushed off the ground and hunched over your legs.
His hand touched your back and you flinched before relaxing. Kiri’s words from a few months ago echoed in the back of your head. “If you are not ready, we can wait. You said we would go together when the both of us are ready. I’ll wait for you.”
You peeked at Lo’ak, something about that last part struck a chord with you. You see how his brows were raised just a bit and pinched in the middle, eyes open and clear. Full of understanding and love.
You fear Kiri’s words are becoming true.
You licked your lips, “we’ll go to the cove.” And you instantly stood up and walked away, Lo’ak following a step behind.
The both of you trod water for a bit once you reached the spirit tree, fully realizing that you're finally gonna see Neteyam again after three years. With a look to Lo’ak and a nod from him, the both of you took a breath and dove under and down.
As you stared at a tendril you started to think maybe you weren’t ready to see him, but with your hand being tugged by Lo’ak, you pulled your queue from behind your back and let the moving tendrils be pulled closer until they connected with your mind.
..
You were back in the forest.
It was midday, and the bright sun held high in the clear blue sky, not a cloud in sight. The grass was a luscious green, soft beneath your bare and calloused feet. Helicoradian and Octoshroom stood at their tall heights, you hit a few helicoradian causing them to shrink in on themselves which brings a laugh of joy out of you.
You walk to the stream where you and Neteyam would usually hang out during the day when both of you were free to escape. As you get closer the sound of the rushing water causes your heart to speed up just a bit, you’ve missed that sound for a while without even knowing.
When you entered the clearing, pushing a few low hanging leaves away from your face, your breath caught in your throat and you almost tripped over an unseen root. Head popping away from the rushing water and in your direction, Neteyam.
He hasn’t aged a day, which, obviously. But it just causes you to freak out a bit, you’ve grown three years, would he see you as past you or present you?
But focusing back on the boy you’ve missed so much. His usual head of braids, feathers, and beads were missing, just a curtain of dark black strands falling over his face and shoulders, it must have been a washing day. He’s also free of a necklace and armband, you notice his knife and bow are near the banks.
“(Y/n), come join me!” His voice made your chest rumble. Has it always been this deep?
“No tricks?” You stepped closer.
“No tricks,” he echoed back.
“Are you naked?” Hands at your hips.
He rolled his eyes, “obviously. Will you hurry up?”
“Nìhoet (perv), turn around first, skxawng.”
“We are to be mated, I’m allowed to see.”
“Not for a while, ‘evengan (boy). Turn.”
He put his hands up in surrender and turned, his toned back showing off his defined stripes. Quickly you stripped yourself of your feathered top and loincloth and rushed into the water with a splash.
You swam up to Neteyam who turned around at your disruption to the quiet. You kept your body under the water with just your head peeking free, your hair a halo behind you.
“I’ve missed you, oeyä sayrìp (my handsome).” A hand touched his cheek before pushing the free hair away. Needing to see all of him.
A hand fell atop the one resting on his cheek with his free one sitting along your jaw, thumb gliding with your stripes as his other three fingers dug into the root of your hair.
“I’m right here, oeyä sevin (my pretty).”
You teared up at that. He says he’s right there, but he’s not. You can’t touch him or converse with him whenever you choose to, you have to make the journey to the spirit tree now just to see figments of memories you had with him. And it seems he doesn’t even know he’s dead, so you can’t tell him these qualms you have.
“Ma tanhì, what hurts you?” Both hands hold your face, caged in his clasp.
You hold his wrist and close your eyes, the tears leaking from your waterline and down your cheek. You feel him wipe them away. You have to bite your lip to compose yourself.
His lips kiss your forehead, they linger and it breaks you even further. He pulled away and you said the words that have been lingering on your tongue.
“Ma Neteyam, Oel ngati kameie (i see you).”
He smiled, that easy smile you always loved seeing, “I know.” And he pulled you close with the hands still on your face, and pressed his lips against yours.
-
Your eyes peeled open.
All you saw was the bright light of the tree with your queue still attached before you pulled it free. You turned your head to the left where Lo’ak was floating, he still seemed to be connected, his eyes closed and hand still held firmly in yours. You bit the skin of your bottom lip and squeezed your eyes shut.
This was the reason you waited to visit because you knew that when you saw him again, it would break you like the first time. He didn’t get enough time with you, with his family, with himself. It wasn’t fair, this was the cruelest thing Eywa has ever done to you.
With a pull to your arm, your legs automatically began scissor kicking you back to the surface. You took a gulping breath when you broke the surface, droplets of water running into your eyes and on your mouth, and your ears almost felt clogged. You pushed your heavy limps back to the ilu, biceps straining with the sudden weight before flopping on the saddle, ready to leave.
“You okay?” Lo’ak asked as he saw beside the animal, left hand on the saddle while his right touched your knee.
You looked away before making eye contact, “just tired.” Both emotionally and physically.
Lo’ak watched you but didn’t say anything, he just climbed in front of you and told the animal to go home.
When you reached the shore you quickly climbed off and walked away, needing to be completely by yourself and allow yourself to wallow or break down or just stare at nothing. You just wanted to be alone. But of course, with Lo’ak, he’ll come chasing after you.
“(Y/n). Come on, we should head home.” And when his hand grasped your wrist, you exploded.
With a blind rage in your heart, you barred your fangs and released a hiss from deep within your chest. He let go of you and you stepped away before running into the trees. The instant regret took away a bit of the fire in your heart, you’ve never bared your fangs at any of the Sullys, even in playful moments.
As you walked through the small jungle area of the island you scrubbed your hands over your face, trying to erase any evidence of your tears. Cheeks flushed with your blood rushing and eyes touched with a red hue in the whites, chest heaving with hiccuping breaths and your ribs hurt with every few beats. Finally, your knees just gave out causing you to collapse to the floor, a deep growl building in your throat.
With a scream, you cried to the Great Mother, begging and pleading for Neteyam to come back. As exaggerated as it sounds, you needed Neteyam to breathe, to live. He unknowingly gave so much purpose to your life, you planned a future with him, you talked about children when you were ready. Pandora doesn’t have the same vibrant colors you use to see every waking day, it doesn’t hum with the high-pitched energy that you felt in your bones. Everything was dull and gray, the food tasted bitter on your tongue.
In your moment of heaving air and pleading to the air, arms snaked around your waist and pulled you in tight against a solid chest. You indulged for just a moment, pretending it was your beloved, but the voice snapped the trance.
“Just pretend,” he kept his voice low, “pretend you are in his arms. Say the words to free your heart.”
Your cries died off, your brows furrowed at his words. You tried to turn your eyes on him, but he removed a hand from your waist and draped them over your eyes, blocking out everything unimportant. You heard the water crashing, the wind brushing the leaves and grass, and your ears twitching with every breath that touched the sensitive skin. His skin was a warm comfort, chest pressing with every breath released, the pads of his fingers just a bit rough from time, the arm still holding your waist was a welcome weight.
“Talk to me, ma… ma txe’lan (my heart).” A nice pet name, but you heard the hesitance, and ignored it.
You touched his forearm, “ma ‘teyam… how I yearn for you day and night. Fruits aren’t as rich and juicy, the sky isn’t as bright and clear, and the children’s shrieks of joy aren’t as full in my heart. You were the air I breathed each second and now with you gone, I feel like I am suffocating. So right now I am angry at you. You had to be the fucking fkew tsamsyiu (mighty warrior)! I- I know how Kiri and Lo’ak- how they care for the human, Spider, but- you couldn’t be selfish or- or pull Lo’ak away. You couldn’t say no, he- Lo’ak, has such a soft spot in your txe’lan. And I know, I know already, I’ve told him plenty of times, it is not his fault. He just wanted his friend back, I understand. And- and I understand your actions, your family was in danger- our family was in danger,” you heaved a breath, “I- I am not angry with you, I’m angry with the sky people. They can’t leave us alone, touching and violating our home and destroying every beautiful gift Eywa has blessed us with. We should have been able to grow old… grow a lor (beautiful) family in the forest. We would teach them the way of the bow, grow them into fkew tsamsyius or zeykoyus (healers), and they would learn from Mo’at.” Your body slumped, and energy vanished.
Lo’ak felt the tears but didn’t speak, only kissed your temple. The kiss lingered and then another kiss near your ear, another to your cheek, a fourth one to your jaw that lead to a few more. You felt him turn your head, both hands touching your neck, you didn’t dare open your eyes, too lost in the spell to break it just yet. With your hands moving to take hold of his biceps, you felt the breath of air ghost your lips.
“Please,” you begged with your heart.
His lips pressed to yours hesitantly, waiting to see if you’ll push further or break away. You tilted your head just a bit, granting better room for your lips to properly move together. And within those few seconds of kissing, you knew. You knew that the spark that was usually there every time has disappeared, telling you that this wasn’t your Neteyam and that you couldn’t see Lo’ak in any other way than as a friend, a brother.
You pushed away, shame filling your blood. ‘You shouldn’t have done this’ ‘This wasn’t fair to Lo’ak’
“I am sorry. I- I shouldn’t have…” “(Y/n), would you mate with me?”
Your head snapped to Lo’ak, eyes wild with confusion at his sudden question. He looked serious, with no hint of mischief within his glowing eyes. His hands still held a firm hold on your neck, his fingers grazing your skin. His ears were pressed to his skull, awaiting some type of answer from you.
“I- I… why would you ask such a question? Whe- where is this coming from?”
He licked his lips, “Neteyam would want you happy. He would want you to have that family, to grow old with someone who cares for you as he did.”
‘No one could care for me as Neteyam did’
“It hurts to see you in pain and I would do everything in my power to take it away-” “You do not like or love me, Lo’ak. You are just confused, I have confused you.”
He shook his head, “no, no. I do, I do like you. I hold love for you that can grow with time-”
“Lo’ak! Stop this!” You wretched free of his hold, “mating is a serious affair. You should not be proposing this pairing just because I have lost my promised one. You say that you are doing this because Neteyam would want me happy, but what about you? Would this union bring love into your life every time you think about it? Because you are blinded by- by our- by my unintended intimacy. I have taken advantage of your comfort, I have twisted your thoughts. You do not love me. You do not see me.”
“Oel ngati kameie, (Y/n). I do,” Lo’ak tried to reach out to you.
You shrunk back, “do not throw those words around worthlessly!” Your arms wrapped over your stomach, “Lo’ak, I know that you had some type of- of feelings for me when we were younger. Kiri mentioned it to me. And with time I assumed they faded because when we arrived here you were instantly transfixed with Tsireya. I saw how your eyes followed her movements, your brows raising, the- the greeting you said to her that caused giggles to spill from her lips. I could feel that this was something more. And when our training started I saw how nervous she made you, how she said your heartbeat sped up every time she touched you, the both of you sharing dazzling smiles. Tsireya makes you happy, Lo’ak.”
A sigh left your lips, “do not throw your happiness away because of me.” Lo’ak tried to take a step towards you but you backed away, throwing a hand up, “I think it best if we are away from each other for a while. I- I need to heal properly and you need to rid yourself of these thoughts for me and focus on spending time with Tsireya again.”
-
Four Years Later
“Fkew Tuktirey! A glorious catch! The family will be proud.” You shifted her head of braids, her laughs filling the air.
The two of you trudged back to your mauri pod, Tuk holding the fish she was able to catch. She’s grown so much in four years, now age eleven and standing at shoulder height, it brought tears to your eyes, she was already starting to be confident and outgoing. Neteyam would be so proud of her.
As she ran ahead into the home you could faint voices having a conversation, voices talking loudly and over each other. You were worried someone was getting yelled at, but when you walked in it was a different scene than what you expected.
Near the entrance, Jake and Neytiri were seated on the ground, smiles brightening their faces in glee. And you noticed that two other bodies sat across from them, Tsireya and Lo’ak, their hands clasped beside their thighs. They all looked up at your and Tuk’s interruption to the home, but no smiles faltered at the intrusion.
“Sa’nu! (mom) Sempu! (dad) Look at the fish I caught with (Y/n)!” She hopped her way over to her parents. They both gasped and applauded her catch, Jake pulling her into his lap, pecking her face in quick kisses causing her to laugh. It was a joyful sight to behold.
“This will make for a wonderful dinner tonight. A celebration of two!” Neytiri boasted. You cocked your head, “what’s the other occasion?”
You took note of Jake and Neytiri sharing a look and Tsireya and Lo’ak doing the same, you and Tuk were the only two out of the loop. It wasn’t until Tsireya gave a simple nod that Lo’ak turned to you, “Tsireya and I are to be mated.” Tuk shrieked in delight before leaping to the couple for hugs.
“I always knew the two of you would come together,” a declaration heard by everyone but meant for Lo’ak. “You were always wise, (Y/n),” then suddenly Lo’ak did the gesture, hand to his forehead before dropping. I see you. The others might have thought it weird, but it meant a lot to you, Lo’ak finally understood you.
“Oh, Tsireya, I can’t wait for you to be an official family member!” Your arms are thrown over her shoulders. The two of you giggle with infectious joy and wiggle your bodies with buzzing energy.
-
Four Years and Two Months Later
The waves crashed and cried, the thundering in your ears almost a welcomed melody at this point. The blazing sun of the late afternoon warmed your skin in a nice hug, and gentle kisses to your cerulean stripes.
Your back sunk into the grains of sand on the beach, the shade of a palm tree leaves bringing relief to your face. Your eyes were closed in peace with lips slightly parted to release puffs of air, hands clasped over your stomach as it rose and fell. With your hair free of braids and the wind blowing, your jet-black strands would tickle your chin or nose, a crinkle forming to stop an incoming sneeze.
Almost slipping into a calming slumber you missed the soft steps heading your way on the beach, the wind and water covering the tracks. It wasn’t until a crunching noise grew louder that you heard the sigh of someone beside you. So you peeled an eye open and in the corner you saw-
“Lo’ak. Did you need something?” You just closed your eye and waited for an answer from him. Body stays in its tranquil state.
He didn’t say anything, you only heard shuffling on his part. But you waited, letting him collect his thoughts since it’s been a while since the both of you have been alone together. It was nice to be around him again, but you knew it was for the best, for both of you.
There was a graze to your forearm and it made you tense up, the touch unwelcomed. You didn’t push him away, just turned your head and stared at the boy- the man before you. Your golden eyes squinted at his quiet demeanor, knees pulled up and head bowed with his braids falling over his shoulder and shielding his face.
“Lo’ak,” he jerked his hand away like you burned off fire, “why have you come here? It is best if we are away from each other.”
His head moved, “I’ve missed my old friend. Missed sitting in silence with you and just keeping each other company as we mourned for Neteyam. Missed having you join me when visiting Payakan, he misses you as well,” a quick laugh, “and I- I just missed being with you.”
You let the words sink in, digesting and absorbing every syllable and word. “I have missed you too, Lo’ak.” A simple confession. You saw the tiny smile on his face.
“Are you excited to be mated with Tsireya?” Wanting to have an easy conversation.
Lo’ak looked out into the clear waters, “yeah. I’m lucky she accepted me, flaws and all. She’s so perfect and gentle and sweet with everyone she meets, always having my heart squeeze with admiration for her. And she chooses me, reckless and carefree Lo’ak who’s always doing shit to get me into trouble or danger. The perfect girl chose the disappointment. It is almost like a dream.” His fingers twiddled, pulling at the joints or tapping fingers together.
“You are not a disappointment, Lo’ak.” A poke was sent to his thigh for his attention, “your family loves you very much. And, yes, some of the things they have said to you haven’t been the nicest, but they bubbled from a place in their heart from fear of losing you.”
He looked away, hands still fidgeting so you pulled the closest into your grasp as you continued speaking, “and you say you are lucky for Tsireya choosing you, but she is also the lucky one. She looks at you like you hung every star that sparkles in the night sky, you pull laughter from deep within her chest, her heart. She touches you with a fragile air, hands always clasped between your bodies or caressing your cheek as she gets lost in your eyes. I see all this from far away. And- and I envy the both of you.”
Lo’ak opened his mouth to speak but you stopped him still needing to speak your mind, “I am so happy that you are able to have this love in your life. You truly deserve the best Lo’ak and being with someone who makes your days brighter and heart lighter, Eywa has given you a great blessing.”
You saw his eyes gloss over with water forming and his tongue popping out to lick his lips. You said all that needed to be spoken, so now you let him understand your words and waited for anything to be said from his side. With his hand still in your hold you ran your thumb over his knuckles.
“(Y/n), I know these are probably the words you don’t wish to hear, but I too need to speak my mind as well.” His eyes bore into yours. You had a guess as to what he was going to say, but just nodded your head and let him speak.
“I did like you. When we were younger and I saw you in action for the first time, it was like Eywa crafted you with such care and precision. I was in awe, but Neteyam got to you first, so I kept a certain distance when it came to you. But when… when he died… I felt- I felt just a bit of hope that- that- I don’t even know now. But I do want to say… you were right. Us being separated helped clear me of confusing thoughts and feelings and allowed me to focus on the one who loved me right away.”
-
Four Years and Nine Months Later
The beach was crowded. Every resident of Awa’atlu was present and dressed in their finest for the union of Tsireya and Lo’ak, the first pairing of different clans. Tonowari and Ronal along with Jake and Neytiri stood to the side of their children, and their siblings at the front of the crowd. You stood between Kiri and Tuk, a hand in both of yours.
You watched and listened as Ronal stepped forward, with her being tsahík she was the one to officiate the wedding, giving her blessings and wise words from Eywa. You saw the smiles pulling at the parents' mouths and the tears welling in their eyes, their children have grown up.
Tsireya with her hair intricately fashioned with beads and shells, her top that shimmered with pearls covering every inch of skin, but her smile and teary eyes were the most beautiful part of her. Her ever-expressive face showed that she was excited to spend the rest of her life with the man standing before her, ready to start a family with him in the future when they are further into adulthood. Excited to wake up every day to his face and arms wrapping her tight to his chest and falling asleep every night to the feel of his chest moving with every breathe and feel the light kisses he would place upon her hair or forehead before mumbling how he loves her and wishes her a good night.
With Lo’ak it looked like he was holding himself back from jumping into Tsireya and tugging her into a steering kiss. He wore a newly woven armband with a feather attached and an Omatikaya cummerbund, almost like his final goodbye to the forest before he gets his tattoos of the Metkayina warriors in due time. He held her hands tightly, thumbs constantly moving to show his nerves and excitement. His smile was ginormous, it was pushing his cheeks high and causing his eyes to squint, it was adorable. His tail was swinging side to side in a rapid movement and his ears were perked high, listening to every word being spoken by Ronal. His eyes shine with love, probably thinking of getting to kiss his mate whenever he wants, day and night nothing would stop him from a quick peck or a passionate melting of lips that caused hands to wander. He’ll enjoy all the loud and quiet moments in their home, just enjoying the other company as they do their own tasks. He’ll talk about his day over dinner and she listens with focused ears and watchful eyes.
The loud cheers of the crowd snapped you from your daydreaming, imagining you and Neteyam’s future.
Tsireya and Lo’ak share a kiss before the clan, their joining of queues and mating before Eywa would take place away from the eyes of others.
With a feast held in their name, everyone was in high spirits. The music was flowing and people were dancing, the food was cooked to perfection and in abundance, and the drinks splashed causing people to let loose. You clapped, cheered, and laughed with your new clan, your new home. Conversing with people your age and allowing yourself to make new friends.
When the eclipse was high in the sky you excused yourself from the festivities and walked to a secluded part of the beach.
As you lay on the beach with your hands behind your head and eyes staring up at the sky, you yearned for him once again. Yearned for his warmth and his touch, his voice and laugh. Yearned for the domestic life you envisioned yourself to have with him, imagining your children squealing and running amuck, but bringing endless light and joy to your lives, as he’d done to yours.
With almost five years passed since his departure, everyone has healed most wounds. There were still cracks and tears within your hearts that might never mend, but you knew that Neteyam was watching all of you. He would be smiling and almost shocked that Lo’ak mated before him, but he would be happy because he knew his little brother deserves every ounce of love. Neteyam would be happy that everyone is living their lives happily and growing more into themselves, with great love filling their bones.
And with that knowledge, he’s happily waiting with Eywa until his family can join him on the other side.

Snow covered the once freshly filled dirt hole in the ground. A snowstorm brewed around the Across the fenced in grounds, hundreds of stone graves covered the area that looked just like the one Perci stood before. Each one had a name, a family that they belong to. A family that was stripped from them long ago, fighting a seemingly endless battle. One that still cursed the land of gracious Pytharios. So, effectively, their deaths were all for naught.
Locking his eyes back to the headstone in front of him, Perci read back over the words engraved into it that he had seen thousands of times before.
“Can you forgive me?” Perci began, hanging his mouth open trying to properly articulate himself as the wind whipped the right words out of him, “I wish I listened to you. You were right. And I was wrong. You wanted to protect me and I never listened.”
He stopped himself before he could unload all of his thoughts out to a simple stone sticking out of the ground. He panted frantically. The heavy winds wanted to knock him on his feet for voicing his silly concerns. This was war. All conflicts get solved through it. It was necessary to live. With life comes war that’ll take it from you, along with everything else. Perci, almost falling over, stumbled as a burst of wind crashed into him. The bleak, loveless winds knew better than a sentient being, of course.
“I shouldn’t have gone against your will. I just thought that—Well—I—I thought you would appreciate me following in your footsteps. I see now what you meant then. Why did I go? I just wanted to learn some magic and get a job to help out you and mom. And then I got good, too good for my own good! And then— the… mandate. I didn’t want any of this!”
Perci half expected the grave to answer, fully knowing the man below would never answer anything ever again. He scoffed at himself for being so naive.
“I suppose I would be following in your footsteps now. Graduated. Drafted. Then, finally dead. In a graveyard surrounded by thousands of other men who were given the same cruel fate as I have on this day.” Perci managed to wheeze a few gasping laughs of it all but laughing wouldn’t help him now and he knew it. He really was as good as dead out there, as far as he knew about the strange world beyond the familiar horizons that he would soon leave behind in the coming days.

edit: Ok. So I posted this before I went to bed and didn't catch that I missed the beginning paragraph of the whole thing 🤦🏻 Now that I woke up and saw it I thought about how to fix it and decided to edit the thing again, delete the old post and post it again in the hopes that I got it right this time around. What do we learn from this, ladies and gentlefolk? Never post something when you have been editing it for hours and your eyes are burning because you are exhausted. Always wait 'til the next day to look at it with fresh eyes and having someone else beta read is never a bad idea. On that note, if someone is interested in helping me post my stuff fully edited as a beta reader, my inbox is wide open and I'd love to hear from you. There is much more in my drafts where this came from including Luca, Deacon, Tan, Hondo and Chris. I am also tagging @zealousdazementality ; @widowssbite ; @ksyn-faith and @randomperson17 who already interacted with the old post so you have the chance to check out the complete thing if you so desire. I know 7k+ words is a lot, so I totally get if you don't, but just wanted to let you know ☺️ Now back to the actual content.

paring: Jim Street x fem!reader (nickname is Carnahan )
wordcount: ca. 7,7k
synopsis: When Street joined SWAT he ran into you on his first day, quite literally. After pulling you back up from the ground he gave you a blinding smile and then hurried over to where the rest of his squad was waiting for him. It was the beginning of what should turn into his favourite part of the day. Not crashing into you, but meeting you, gentle smile, kind heart and all. And he has you wrapped around his little finger before he even utters a word. You learn pretty quickly that he's a flirt and you give as good as you take. It is only a matter of time until your banter turns into something more. A one-time thing you think, considering his reputation but then it happens again and again until he demands space and you give it to him. But sadly like with most things in life, you only realize what you had once it’s gone. A lesson Street believed he already learned countless times before but this time it wasn’t someone else’s fault that he lost someone he cared for. It was his and it broke his heart to know that he had been the one to burn the bridge. Now he has to stand there and watch you from afar, not sure if he'll ever find a way back to you.
note: Yes my dudes (gn) I am still alive and breathing. I know that most people are probably on my blog because of my TGM or Tyler Owens content and I am still working on that, but a new hyperfixation kicked hard and got me out of my writer's block. So here we go. I hope you can enjoy my first attempt at writing for SWAT and if people enjoy I might share more of the roughly 100k words of plot I have for those idiots (very lovingly)
Trigger Warning(If I forgot something or you want me to add to the list, my inbox is wide open. You are responsible for your media consumption, so proceed with caution, you know the drill): non-canon (the timeline is a mess but I don't think it matters much), cursing; themes of SA and non-consensual touch, written by a non-native speaker

“How much longer are you planning to just stand there in the corner and watch from the sidelines?”, as well-meaning as he knows his best friend's teasing is, Lucas's words sting. Street knew that he should do something but what Luca did not know was that he had absolutely no right actually to try to ask you to dance with him or do as much as talk to you.
There was a time when you two had been closer and when things got too real for him and too close to what might be perceived as a relationship he pushed you away. Harshly so. “I don’t do relationships”, he can still see the way his words are cutting through you, pain washing over your features that you attempt to hide.
It’s why he’s standing here on the sidelines clad in his S.W.A.T. uniform while the rest of the team is working the donors. He knows he should too. It’s for a good cause after all but from the moment he saw you move to the dance floor with the crime novelist who had spent most of the evening bewitching you with his italian charm he was way past the point of being able to pretend that he actually cared.
Street knows that you are only doing this for the kids. You hate being the centre of attention and a woman with your curves gets a lot of that once you are clad in a dress that shows off your assets best. It's why you prefer higher necklines in your day-to-day life. To avoid the staring gazes of men who'd objectify you for your curves once they were done shaming you first. But when it came to getting rich assholes to add a zero or more to a cheque you were willing to go there and it was something he loved about you. Your compassion and kindness that got you so invested in the event in the first place and the strength you possessed to make it through the evening while others talked with your boobs more than you. Putting yourself out there like that took a lot of bravery, he just wished that he could be the one to hold you close, to reassure you that you had at least one man in this room who was covering your six.
“Who would have thought that our girl from archives cleans up so nicely”, he hears a voice from the side and there stands Rogers. A cocky new SWAT Academy recruit with too big an ego for his own good. Street never liked him much, but after this comment, all he wants to do is grab him and beat some sense into that deadhead of his, but Chris is beating him to the punch, quite literally when she rams her fist into his stomach and makes him keel over.
“Never judge a book by its cover”, she's leaning down to whisper those words into his ear.
“That a S.W.A.T. rule?”, he gets out between gritted teeth, not getting why people made such a fuss about him making a very much harmless joke about you.
“No. It’s called basic human decency”, Deacon throws in as he stares down Rogers. He would make sure that Mumford knew that the guy was no good and he should keep an close eye on him.
Street's focus is already back on you as he sees someone else approaching you on the dancefloor. The guy was tall, looked sharp in his suit that was sure as hell bespoke and the first streaks of grey in his hair placed him in his late thirties. He waits until the song fades out before he moves in and even though Street has zero idea what he says, it looks like he dialed up the charm to eleven. He wasn't sure what it was about the guy but something was off and he didn't just feel like that because he could see how hellbent the guy was on dancing with you.
“And who the fuck let that guy in?”, Chris's voice is tense as she cannot help but stare at the guy right next to you, her words prompting the rest of the squad to look your way too.
“I thought they banned him after last time”, Luca had straightened his back and stood a little taller now.
“So did I”, Tan placed his drink down at the small table they had gathered around while they all stared at the scene unfolding in front of their very own eyes.
“Who’s the guy?”, Street hadn’t been thrilled to see you dance with a guy like that but now with the way the others talked about him, he only felt validated in his feeling that the vibes were off big time.
“Tony Parker. Hollywood big shot. His money is involved in the production of seven out of ten movies in LA”, Tan throws in. That would at least explain why he was invited in the first place.
“He got some serious wandering hands syndrome and if the grapevine is right. It’s more than just hands that wander once he got people behind closed doors”, Chris adds, a shiver running down her spine when she thinks back to the time a couple of years back when he was dancing with her. She had just made S.W.A.T. and he thought he could take advantage of her position. Just fucking gross.
Street’s eyes were glued to you. The longer he was forced to watch you the more obvious it became to him how fucking uncomfortable you were but instead of making a scene the way you absolutely 100% should have all you do is put on a brave face and stay your kind and charming self the way you have all night long. And while Street is watching you like a hawk ready to step in the second the guy oversteps, the rest of 20 squad is looking at him.
They all knew that there had been something between you and Street and even if it might have started casual, it sure as hell was not in the end. None of them were sure what went down between you two and why it ended, but whatever it was and how much distance it brought, it hadn't changed a single thing about the love that was shining in Street's eyes the second he saw you.
“I wonder how he got back in. Cortez promised she’d get him banned after the stunt he pulled last time with Carnahan”, Street's ears are perking up at the mention of your name and his eyes flitter over to Chris.
“I doubt she put him on the list”, Deacon throws in, his eyes wandering around to figure out if their boss had seen the unwanted guest yet and if so, what her stance was.
“We all know that these guys are waving around with some cash and the door magically opens”, Tan grumbles. He had seen more than enough of his fair share of people who bought their way out of trouble while he worked at VICE. It was so fucking infuriating to watch criminals walk free just because they had enough petty cash to pay whatever fine they got.
“Nah. He’s the type of guy who’s oozing so much filthy rich asshole energy that they have to let him in once he’s made sufficient enough of a scene”, Luca is flexing his fingers as he speaks. They are itching, the need to just walk over and drag that bastard away from you is growing with every moment he has to witness the way you are dancing with that asshole. He really wants to play cavalry for you and get you out of there, but he also knows that this would cause so much more trouble because of who they were talking about.
The moment that everything changes is when they see the way his hand is moving from right below your shoulder blades down to the small of your back and from there he splayed his hand right on your ass, making your entire body stiffen at the unwanted touch.
“Chris and Tan, kick that sorry excuse for a man out, Street, you are cavalry and get Carnahan out. Luca and I go talk to Cortez to make sure we have department backing if he’s inevitably acting like a bratty child”, Deacon took the lead and laid out the battle plan for them, even though Street wasn't even waiting for him to finish. He wouldn't have cared for backup at all. All he could think about was getting you out of there and fast. He makes his way through the crowd, fists clenched at his sides and the rushing of the blood in his ears loud enough to drown out the music and the chatter of the gossiping crowd. He didn't care who he had to shove to the side as he made his way through the dancefloor to where you were. All he can see is the guy's grip on you getting tighter and tighter. Fucking bastard.
Chris and Tan are following right in his footsteps, knowing that there is nothing that would stop Street right now. All they could do was make sure he didn’t get provoked by the Hollywood asshole so he could get you out of here without risking his career for beating the guy into a pulp. Not that he didn’t deserve it, but Street had enough of a target on his back as is. He didn’t need the added bonus of fucking with one of the most influential men in LA.

Dancing with David Rossi was probably one of the most pleasant things you had ever done during an event like this. The song was just fading out and Rossi had invited you over to his table when something rattled you. You knew that the man standing behind you was trouble the second you heard that deep baritone voice again. It sent you straight back to what happened two years ago. The first time that Cortez asked you to help them work the crowd during the event.
You weren't SWAT, but you had a charming presence and knew how to give people the knowledge they needed to make a choice, preferably the one you wanted them to make—writing large cheques for the children's hospital and you sure as hell could imagine worse things to do with your Friday night than doing something good. Even if the whole people part was more annoying than anything else. You had thrown yourself all in that first night, digging up old cases to build an imaginary one that people could solve with real detective methods and it was quite the hit. Something you were truly proud of, that much you knew, but it also meant you lowered your guard. You were surrounded by SWAT officers. They were your friends, your family. What was supposed to go wrong here?
And then Tony Parker happened and everything went to shit. You weren't used to hot and charming men being all over you so at first you took his flirting for innocent interest in your job and what you did at SWAT. That was until he put his hands where you sure as hell didn't want them and even though you told him no more than once, he wasn't letting go until he had you cornered in one of the interrogation rooms that were technically closed for the public. If it weren't for Chris who went looking for you, you sure as hell wouldn't have gotten away with just being touched and groped. You felt so relieved when Cortez promised that she would make sure that he wouldn't set foot in SWAT HQ unless it were custody, protective or otherwise and you believed her.
At first, you blamed the whole situation on the merry widow and the new look silhouette dress you wore that made you look like you were hotter than you actually are but once Chris sat you down in the locker room and helped you sort through all of the thoughts and feelings that were racing through your brain you saw it for what it was.
A sick dude getting off on an unhealthy power imbalance and the perfect way to act out his fantasy was forcing himself on someone else against their will.
You knew that if you were to really make a scene you could pull Rossi back in and then the rest of SWAT would surely join. They were a protective bunch, especially with you because your skills were purely academic. But you know that it would only make things worse. All you had to do was bite your tongue, stay polite and dance with him for one song. Then you could excuse yourself and he couldn't say anything about it because you gave him at least one dance.
With your hand in his, the other resting on your spine right under your shoulder blades he starts moving to the music. The song is slow and you curse Fortuna for being such a bitch.
"I've been dreaming of this moment for two long years", he murmured into your ear, sending a shiver down your spine. You knew that there hadn't been any actions taken by the department because the intervention had been too early and the video cameras hadn't been set on recording the way they usually were. Not to mention that a man like Parker didn't just have a lawyer, he had a fucking army and they would have turned your life into a miserable shit show for the mere incineration that something hadn't been ok and you knew how these cases went. You had filed away your fair share of them and you weren't overly keen on getting right smack dab into the middle of all of this, even though you knew that this made you a part of the problem.
Maybe he wouldn't have dared to show his ugly ass visage if you had pressed charges against him, maybe all it would have taken was a little bit of bravery to not just keep on swallowing his heinous behaviour. But right here on the dancefloor, all you could hope for was that he would not overstep in public the way he had done in the private of the interrogation room. He was an influential man but even his immunity had limits and harassing you in a room filled with SWAT officers would be downright suicidal.
"You know, I am a man who likes to finish what he started", he begins, hand wandering from the appropriate place on your back down south and you are cursing yourself for not wearing your usual poofy skirts. That way at least you wouldn't be forced to feel his grubby hands on your body as much. You are closing your eyes for a moment to compose yourself before you can look back at him. You would totally have to borrow Chris's shower gel to wash that disgusting touch off of your skin before you head home tonight.
"As much as I understand a wish for completion, I doubt this place is right for what you started"
"You are so right about that. So why aren't you a good little girl and come with me? I promise I'll even write a cheque for your silly little charity afterwards"
When you see that smirk on his face you feel panic settling in your stomach. It sends you right back to that night in the interrogation room with you pressed against the wall and his hands wandering, just like they did right now. Your eyes begin to dart around the room, desperately looking for one of your friends. You knew that both 20 and 50 squad were here tonight, so at least one of them had to see what was going on, right?
You were ripped out of your thoughts when you collided with Parker's chest after he stopped in his tracks, looking to the side and there you see Street making his way through the crowd, Chris and Tan right behind him. The cavalry was here.
"If you know what's good for yourself you will take your hands off of the lady and step back, now", Street's voice is low and more growl than human. You've seen him mad before but this is a whole new level of anger and you get where he's coming from. Considering his childhood and his own volatile temperament you are surprised that he's even talking with Parker instead of just smashing in his face.
Parker's eyes are darting over Tan and they linger a little longer on Chris, probably remembering the moment when he tried similar bullshit with her 5 years ago before they settled on Street, wandering up and down as if he was assessing how much of a threat he'd be.
"I am counting to three and if you don't have your hands off the lady and a minimum of six feet between her and yourself I will make you make that space"
"And who do you think you are to tell me what to do?"
"One"
"Do you even know who I am", his fingers were digging deeper into your arm, making you grimace at the pain it sent straight from your arm up to your shoulder.
"Two"
"One phone call and you'll never get a job in this city ever again"
"Three"
Everything after that happens in a blur. You feel Parker's nails scratching over your skin while he tries to hold on to you and you wince at the pain before you feel two strong arms wrapping around you. That is followed by a loud thud of a body hitting the floor but you cannot see what is going on. You have two hands pressing you against a strong chest, the larger body protecting you with his own. People are screaming and through the commotion, you can hear Captain Cortez trying to calm people. And before you know it you feel the hands moving, picking you up bridal style to carry you away from all those staring eyes and the chaos, heavy steps taking you up the stairs towards the part of the building that was not open for the public.
Tumblr media
Street wished that he could have done more but he had priorities. Your safety was his most important concern and no matter how much he would have loved to wipe that smug grin of that asshole's face with his fist, he had to get you as far away as possible from Parker's wandering hands and prying eyes. It was bad enough that he left you alone long enough with the bastard for him to get his hands on you. He couldn't expose you to this any more and he knew that the others would take good care of the asshole. That is the one thing Street learned in his time in SWAT. They are his family and they'll always cover his back.
When he maneuvered you away from the scene he could feel how wobbly your feet were and the heels you were wearing didn't help with the whole ordeal so he decided it was best to just pick you up and get you out of the danger zone. He made his way through the crowd and up the stairs, everyone far more focused on what was going on with Parker than what he was doing with you. He could only imagine how many people had their phones out while they were recording what would surely turn into a picture-perfect SWAT arrest.
With every step he took away from the crowd the sounds from downstairs were more muffled and the worst of it was over so he could take a deep breath and look down at you. Your face was hidden in the crook of his neck and your fingers were digging into his tactical vest to keep him close. Considering the way you were shaking in his arms he was pretty sure that you were crying and it broke his heart to think of what that bastard had done to you last time to illicit such a visceral reaction in you.
He didn't take you to the interrogation room the way Deacon had told him. He was much too concerned for that to bring back memories of that night two years ago and you were enough of a fragile state as is. So he walked into the room they usually used to talk with the families or kids if they were involved. There was a couch and he didn't have to fear to send you straight into a panic attack once you saw the room.
But first, he has to take inventory of your wounds so he sits you down at the wooden desk in the corner. You are still trembling and now in the quiet of the room, he can hear you sniffling and your hands are holding onto his tactical vest as if your life depended on it, keeping him standing right between your thighs. On any other day, Street would be ecstatic to have his dream girl this close to him again, but right now all he can see is the terror in your eyes and the way you shake like a leaf, your tears leaving a streak of mascara in their wake.
"Hey, Carnahan...", his voice is low and calm. He doesn't have to be a shrink to know that you were deeply upset and unsettled by what had just happened on the dancefloor. You didn't even react to him talking to you, acting like your mind was still downstairs with Parker's hands all over you.
"Carnahan", he tries again, reaching out his hand to place it on your cheek but your hand shoots up and grabs his wrist before his skin touches yours. It hurts to think that you wouldn't allow him to comfort you but on the other hand, he shouldn't be surprised. He had hurt you pretty bad. Why should you accept his touch after all the shit he said about you and the way he pulled back the moment things seemed to get serious.
"I need you to breathe for me", finally your panicked gaze finds his, eyes wide and struggling to focus but at least you are looking at him.
"In and out. In and out...", he instructs, counting in his head and elongating the periods slowly from four seconds to six and then later to eight.
Your chest was rising and lowering, listening to his voice as you followed his commands. It was easier than it should be to fall back into the familiarity and safety of being around him. He was the one who wanted to end things after all, but right now when your brain was in pure panic mode, you couldn't imagine a single person you'd rather be around than Jim Street.
As bad as it hurt when he pushed you away, you'd never felt this safe with another person before, even though you worked with a bunch of burly SWAT dudes. It takes a while until you are fully in the room with him and you feel disoriented and dizzy as you take a mental inventory of your body. You feel the burning of some scratches on your arm. Those had to be from when Parker tried to hold on to you even while he was faced with three SWAT officers who told him in no uncertain terms to very impolitely fuck off. And then you feel the heat of Jim's body seeping into yours, his thighs touching yours as he stands between your legs.
"That's good", he murmurs after moving his hand, so his index and middle finger are now resting on the pulse point on your wrist, glad when he gets to feel how much calmer your heart is beating now.
Street's awfully close to you, much closer than he has been in weeks if not months and even though the rational part of your brain knows it's wrong, there is still that feeling hiding in a corner of your heart that is happy that it's him who saved you.
"Are you ok?", it's a stupid question and he knows it. How the fuck were you supposed to be ok after something like this happened to you? But still, he needed to assess the damage to be able to help you. And that was his top priority. Helping you.
"Nothing that a little marigold balm won't fix", you give him a small smile, the kind that never fails to make his heart stumble in his chest and he gives you one of his smiles in return, dimples and all. He was relieved that they made it to you in time, that they got to stop the asshole before he could do anything that would have caused greater harm.
It's that goddamn smile that made you fall for him in the first place. That and his infectious humour and big heart.
You shake your head at the thought. Jim Street was not interested in you. At least not like that and you knew it. There was no point in pretending otherwise. Even if he saved your ass out there it didn’t mean that he magically changed his mind about you and the prospect of a relationship.
He knows that this would be overstepping big time but all he wants to do is put his hands on your cheeks and pull you into a kiss, to show you that whatever he told you didn't matter because what he felt for you was so big and real and it felt like dying every day a little more when he couldn't wake up with you sleeping in his arms. He believes that there is something shimmering in your eyes, a fondness that is more than what you'd feel for someone who's just a friend and so he is about to make his dream come true and finally get to kiss you again when the door to the room flies open and there you see the Captain and Hondo.
They are both eyeing you two and you feel like you'd been caught in the act by your teachers, leaning back a little to have more space between you and Street to at least pretend all you felt for him was purely platonic. But Street doesn't budge or step away from you, he doesn't even act like you two were caught. His gaze is colder as he eyes those two, the storm that had been brewing in his chest coming closer to the surface. Cortez was the reason why you were in this situation in the first place. She fucked up and you had to pay the price for that and there is a part of him who feels like he should make her pay tenfold for every second you spent distressed because of Parker.
"Are you ok Carnahan?", Cortez asks, the guilt that is written over her features rather obvious to anyone who knew her at least a little. She's taking steps towards you as her eyes wander questioningly over her officer. She has heard the rumours that something happened between you two. Of course she did, it was part of her job description to know exactly what was going on with her people, especially considering how dependent they were on their performance in the field. But Hondo told her that things were over and there was nothing for her to be worried about in regards to department policy, but this looked like anything but 'being over'.
"Yes, Captain", you try to ignore the fact that Street has not moved away from you, his body heat still seeping into your skin and you feel the way he is positioning himself between you and the rest of the room. One could actually think that the people he's facing are the enemy and in some sense, that might actually be true. He wanted you for himself, wanted to guard you from the world and make sure you'd get the needed reprieve after the shitshow that went down on the dancefloor.
"You sure that you don't need any medical attention?", her eyes wander over your body, taking inventory of you not so dissimilar to the way Street had and then she's focusing back on him and her brow furrows. She does feel bad that Parker made it past the entrance even without an invite and the officer who let him in would be on armoury duty for the foreseeable future. But considering the possessive way Street acted around you, she was not quite sure if walking out the room meant leaving you in company just as bad as Parker.
"No. Those are just scratches and I doubt that there is a pill against misogynistic rape rhetoric", it is an attempt at a joke and a poor one at that but you feel like you have to diffuse the situation at least somewhat. Street was so tense that you worried he might lose it and lash out against whoever made that one step too close to you, completely irrelevant whether that might be friend or foe .
"Then you should go and see Wendy tomorrow"
"I will"
She nods, knowing that there isn't much else she can do for you right now even if she wants to.
"Parker is in custody for now but we'll need your witness statement tomorrow. Everything has to go by the book and we have to dot our i's and cross our t's to make sure that he stays where he belongs. Behind bars", Hondo adds and you nod at him, knowing that there was no way come hell or high water that you wouldn't make sure that you did whatever you could to not let that bastard walk free.
"Are Chris and Tan ok?"
"Yeah. Though I think Chris enjoyed kicking him to the ground a little too much", Hondo gives you one of his signature smiles and you smile back at him, or at least you try.
There is a pause and Hondo and Street are exchanging looks. Even if Street has started out with SWAT a few months ago he is just like family to Hondo. Buck chose him for the team and even though Hondo wasn't quite sure what his whole ordeal was, it was painfully obvious even for a blind man that he cared about you. A lot. Whether he was willing to fully admit that to himself didn't matter. And for Hondo, it looked like you felt safe in Street's company, so he pulled Cortez back to leave you two some space.
"You know where to find us if something changes", he adds before he pulls the door shut behind him and Cortez and you cannot help but breathe a sigh. Parker is in a cell and the others are ok. You hadn't even realised how much faster your heart had been beating while they gave you the update.
"Hey sweetheart", Jim's voice is low and quiet, and yet more than enough to pull your focus back to him. Your eyes meet his and you feel how your erratic heartbeat slows down and a wave of calm washes over you. That's all he needed to get you right back under his spell. Two words and a gentle touch and you felt like you did when all of this started and he kissed you for the first time.
"You should head back downstairs now. I'm sure there are a bunch of ladies out there who are only waiting to add a few zeroes to her cheques for one of those dimpled smiles of yours", your words are meant as teasing, your way to deescalate the situation after the very obvious tension that grew in the room between Street and Cortez, but when you see the way he flinches at your words it's taking you by surprise.
You know Street is a flirt. It's not something that he keeps a secret so you didn't think much of it but to him, this felt like a bullet hitting him straight in his chest. He knows why you are doing it. It's not that hard to figure out that you offer him a way out, an easy way off the hook after he did more than his dues rescuing you but the thought of letting go hurts him more than he'd ever care to admit.
His hand is flexing, fingers digging deeper into the fabric of your dress. It's the natural reaction of his body to the mere idea of leaving you alone right now or ever really.
"I cannot just leave you after what just happened down there", you are surprised by the insistence in his voice, the way his brown gaze finds yours and looks right to the bottom of your soul. Street was stubborn as fuck, that much you knew for sure, so it shouldn't have been a surprise that he'd attempt to stay even if you told him that it was ok to go.
"I meant it when I said that I was fine"
"And I meant it when I said that I will not leave you alone after what just happened", his voice was getting a little louder, forcing him to stop and take a deep breath. He didn't want to lash out but he needed you to understand one of the most simple truths he knows. That he was there for you, to guard and to protect you and he wouldn't leave you behind.
"Fine. If that's what you really want"
If that's what you really want... god you didn't even begin to imagine what he really wanted. The words alone triggered a cascade of different images in his brain. His strong hands wandering over your soft skin, his body pressed against your gentle curves and the heaven that was pulling you in for...
„What I really want right now is to kiss you“, the words are out before he really knows it and his voice is low and almost quiet enough for you to miss them.
„What did you just say?“
Street looks up at you with wide eyes, the thing he wanted to keep a secret for your sake out in the open, but what hurt more than anything was the way your brows rose and your eyes widened in surprise, maybe even shock at his confession. There had been a time when he didn’t have to ask. When placing his hands on your cheek and neck had been as natural as breathing and he could kiss you whenever his heart desired. But those days are gone and he’s the only one to blame. He was the one to burn that bridge in the first place…
Your gaze is locked with his and if he’d still have his fingers on your pulse point he’d be able to feel how much faster your heart was beating now. As much as you loved to tell Chris and yourself that you were over Jim Street and that a man who wasn’t willing to commit was not worth the time nor the tears, there had been a tiny corner of your heart where those feelings you felt for him were still hiding out.
You loved Jim Street, even if you know you shouldn’t.
Jim knows he shouldn’t have said that and he hated himself for that kind of slip-up. Your night had been shitty enough as is. You really didn’t need another layer on top of him attempting to apologise for the way he treated you. But he knew you well enough to be aware that there was no way you’d let this go right now until he answered the question so he breathed a sigh before his hand came to rest on your cheek, thumb gently caressing your cheekbone.
“What I really want right now is to kiss you”, he repeats his words, louder this time to leave no room for interpretation his soft brown eyes finding yours, looking at you to gauge your reaction to his words.
Street expected a great many things. Anger and fury were at the top of the list, potentially pain and sadness or even just the plain and simple humiliation of you laughing at the absurdity of the idea that after all he said to you you’d still entertain the thought of considering to give him a chance. But all there is is a gentle hand on his cheek that pulls him closer and your forehead resting against his, a soft chuckle falling from your lips.
"This feels like one of those dreams where I know everything is too good to be true but it’s nice to at least indulge in the thought of it for a little while before I hear my alarm blaring and I have to face the sad reality of the fact that it was only just a dream", he can feel your breath against his skin with his eyes closed he tries to really take this in and enjoy the moment. He has no idea how long this might last and he intends to remember every tiny detail about it.
"I could say the same. Though for me it's usually Duke who's licking over my face because he cannot manage to get Luca out of bed after a night of COD", his laughter is rumbling in his chest and it makes you chuckle too. Yeah, you can very vividly imagine how that's going for the two of them.
“I like the idea of where a kiss could lead us ...”, your voice is small and he puts a hand on your neck, feeling the rushing of your blood under his palm he pulls back a little to look into your eyes. They are closed as you continue, knowing that this is probably the most vulnerable he’s ever seen you even though you had been sprawled out in his sheets, completely naked for him before, "But I’m scared to lose you. For good this time"
It hurts so much to hear you speak like this. To see how hesitant you've become around him because he acted like a complete asshole.
"You won't”, the determination in his voice makes you look up at him with those soulful eyes that always seemed to see straight to the bottom of his soul.
“I was sorry even before I finished that fucking sentence and I've been thinking about a way to apologise, to make things right with you but nothing ever felt like it was enough. I hurt you so much and all just because I was so scared when things got real between us and I didn't know what to do. It's so fucking stupid but I thought if I push you away first I could be the one hurting, not the one being hurt"
You had known of his family situation, at least a little bit and to see that Street was dealing with trust- and abandonment issues was not that terribly hard, but you never thought it would push him that far. The thought of that moment when he cuts you out of his life still brings tears to your eyes. The man you only knew as funny, brave and kind turned into something different. Cold and hard as steel and there was no way to reach him behind that wall. To think that someone hurt him so much that he thought his only way to deal with it was lashing out hit you to your core, the pain and sadness from that day mixing with a burning anger. No one deserved to be treated like that.
"It was stupid of me to think that that would fix shit and all these feelings would just stop", he shakes his head a little before his gaze finds yours again, a dry humourless chuckle falling from his lips, "For the record, they didn't. They've been there and real this whole time", he gently brushes a lock of hair behind your ear as he leans back down.
"Feelings?"
"Yeah", Street takes a step closer to you, one hand resting on your cheek and the other finding its way to your waist, pulling you to the edge of the tabletop for you to wrap your legs around his hips, "I had no idea what it was until I lost you"
"And what is it?"
"Love", the word is little more than a quiet whisper with his lips less than an inch away from yours, one of your hands resting on his chest with your fingers digging into his vest while the other moved down to his neck.
"Love? Quite the big word. Are you sure?"
"You know me. I am not someone for big speeches..."
"Yeah. You are more the kick down the door and kick some ass kinda guy", he loves the warmth in your voice while you tease him. It's not that you are really wrong about it. He does have a reputation, but to know that you two were back on a well enough territory for such gentle teasing gave him hope that maybe he hadn't destroyed the most beautiful thing he had ever had the chance to have in his life.
"Only when it's necessary", his forehead is resting against yours before he takes another breath and the playfulness morphs into something with more gravitas.
"I never had a good example of what love's supposed to look like so fuck all is what I know but when I look at you I feel like I wanna spend the rest of my life figuring it out. For you and with you", you look him in the eyes and you feel like you are practically melting at the confession.
"I don't want to make a promise I don't know how to keep but what I can promise you is that I am willing to try and do my best"
"That's all a girl can ask for"
"Does that mean I get to kiss you?", he's tilting his head, nose brushing playfully against yours before you pulled back with a chuckle and shook your head, the smirk that grew on your lips enough of a tell for him to know that this was all in good faith.
"You really want that?"
"You know how it is with addicts. Cold turkey is never a fun experience and it wasn't even like I could get a substitute drug", that sentence made a chuckle bubble up in your throat and Street cannot remember the last time he heard something as beautiful as you laughing.
"You are an idiot Jim Street, you know that?"
"Yeah but I'm your idiot"
"Fucking right you are"
And with those words you pull him in, lips crashing onto each other and your legs wrapping tighter around his waist. His hands held you closer than before, your own arm snaking around his neck to pull him even tighter in your embrace and so you could bury your fingers in the hair at the nape of his neck, nails gently scratching his skin. A small moan fell from his lips at the feeling and when your lungs were burning and you pulled back, his lips were chasing yours to steal one more kiss from yours.
"That a good first fix?"
"Yeah. But I could use another. Just for good measure"
Tumblr media
"Hey. Someone I can crash with tonight?", Luca's voice sounded much more excited than he was supposed to be considering the question.
"You have your own house now. Why would you need to couch surf?", Tan looks at the other who just entered the locker room. The party was finally over and they all did their dues. At least there wasn't anyone else stupid enough to misbehave after that display of how SWAT worked.
"Because I believe that whatever happens in the house tonight is not meant for my eyes or ears"
He is grinning ear to ear now, blue eyes sparkling bright and then it finally clicks for Chris while the rest of the squad is still staring at one another all puzzled.
"Fuck yeah, I knew it. Today is payday, my friends", she turns around to Tan, Deacon and Hondo and reaches out her hand to them. It shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone that of all the people who joined the pot when Street would finally get his shit together and rebuild the bridge he burned with you, she was the one who got closest to the date. They are grumbling a bit, though it's more for show than anything else. They are all glad that they don't have to keep on watching their friend stare at you longingly. Life was too short for that shit and they knew that better than most.
"You sure you didn't meddle with this? I mean you are eerily close", Tan questions but he only gets a hit over the head for it. He hadn't thought that you'd give Street a second chance, even if he would eventually man up and apologise. Tan had pegged you for the one chance only kinda gal and now he had to pay up.
"You are just mad because you are losing 100 bucks to "the girl who is better with dogs than people" tm"
And while those two are bickering the rest of the team is pulling out the wallets and Hondo cannot help the content smile that plays on his lips. He had questioned Buck's choice with Street more than once since he joined but tonight he proved to everyone what it had been that Buck saw in him.
He was courageous, kind and loyal. All qualities that he not only admired but that were paramount to being a good SWAT officer and he was glad that he had someone like that covering his six.

I think in the past you may have been indifferent to this, but with changing times and agents and editors not being able/willing to put in great effort on revisions, do you think it’s worth it for authors to pay for a private editor for their books before querying? If so, how would you find a legitimate one?
To answer your questions:
-- Do I think it's worth it to hire a freelance editor before querying? Not really, in most cases. (see below for elaboration)
-- How would you find a legit one? Yeah, idk. Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a "freelance editor" and charge a lot of money for that work, and what you get might really vary. Many editors who have left or been laid off from major publishers now have freelance editorial businesses -- some great authors have freelance editorial businesses. (And some less-than-stellar folks or scammers have freelance "editorial" businesses!) So I guess you'd ask authors you trust for recommendations, and ask the editor themself for references?
To answer your bold statement: I think most agents and editors would take exception to your characterization of them "not being able/willing to put in great effort on revisions." Like, yikes??? LOL????
To elaborate on the first question: I remain steadfast in my position that the majority of authors don't pay for pre-querying professional edits, and probably don't need to. I'd say the vast majority (perhaps all?? or 99%?) of the authors I have ever signed, didn't pay a freelance editor prior to querying.
They OUGHT to have read a book like "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers" and applied its principles. They probably DID have a good critique group or partner. They MAY have had peer help with polishing their query letter, or paid a nominal amount for a critique at a conference or something like that.
But beyond that, what I think most agents are looking for is a text that is as polished as you can reasonably make it on your own -- certainly not a rough draft! -- but also, we don't expect that it will be ready for publication tomorrow morning. We do edits. The editor does edits. The copyeditor does copyedits. Etc. ALL books need some editorial attention before they go to print, it's a team effort.
I just personally don't think that going out of pocket for a massive edit from a freelance editor pre-querying is a MUST, unless you a) are planning to self-publish, or b) truly want to and have the money to burn.
Now: If you DO have the money, and you REALLY WANT to do that -- you can! Some people have told me that they liked working with a freelance editor or writing coach when they were new because it gave them basically a crash course on how to revise and work with an editor. So if you didn't take writing classes that involved revision in school and you want to brush up on those skills, maybe it's a useful investment.
BUT PLEASE BEAR IN MIND: Even the best, smartest, most hard-working and amazing editor, whether freelance OR working for a publisher, doesn't wave a wand and "FIX" your book. They can't magic a piece of crap into a chocolate cake -- YOU have to do all the hard work on the revision.
If you are unwilling or unable to dig deep on the revision, your results will likely be suboptimal, even if the editor has great references and you paid them a fortune.
