day 18 of @hprecfest - a fic that makes you laugh

Little Red Courgette, by @blamebrampton - T, 31k, 2009

Summary: When this season's purple courgettes are woefully thin, Draco Malfoy thinks it amounts to small beans. Next thing he knows, the Department of Standards is over-run with leeks, Brussels sprouts all sorts of legislative difficulties, and somebody appears to have put a roquette under Harry Potter. Can Draco seize a marrow victory? Or will his plans for peas be squashed?

All along, Kingsley Shacklebolt finds himself pining for the good old days, when, instead of governing, all you had to worry about were Dark Lords and imminent death.

Excerpt:

They each made it through a bowl of chocolate with sundry other flavours garnishing it. And three large glasses of wine. This was the only excuse Draco could find for the fact that he found himself asking Potter: 'So what's your game?'

'Quidditch,' Potter replied instantly. 'Or Exploding Snap.'

'Here. What's your game here.'

'I'm not with you.'

A part of Draco's brain screamed at him to stop, but the alcohol-soaked part, in a voice that sounded suspiciously like Smythe's, encouraged him to go on. 'Are you working with Kingsley to enlist me as your pawn in a clean out of the Ministry? You were very quick to agree when I asked you to warn The Quibbler off, was it all a ruse?'

'I thought you were engaged in your own hands-on grass-roots Ministry reform, making the one department work well, with an eye to expanding in the future,' Potter rebutted.

'Well I am, so you needn't try making use of me in your nefarious scheme.'

'I don't have a nefarious scheme.'

'So is it all a complicated plan to take some highly personal and embarrassing revenge for the Potter Stinks badges? Because that was years ago. And although I feel a little badly about it now, they were excellent work for a wizard that age.'

'They were, I was impressed. I still have one at home, you know.'

'Really?'

'Yup. I thought you were a wanker at the time, but I have to say, that was a quality Charm.'

'Thanks. So what's left? You're in the hire of someone keen to assassinate the last of the Malfoys; it's all an elaborate if somewhat clumsy plan at seduction; or you're desperate for someone to talk to now that all your friends are getting married and having children.'

'Those are my options? I'll take two, clumsy seduction.'

'Really?'

Back in 2019 when I rediscovered the joys of fanfic after over a decade out, I started off the way any (less tech-savvy) millennial would, by googling 'Drarry fanfiction'. blamebrampton's works were some of the first that I found, and I was immediately entranced. They're such an incredible variety, from the Muggle World-set Doing the Lambeth Walk, to travel fic Beneath Boundless Skies, to wartime epic (and longtime @tackytigerfic obsession) And Save Me From Bloody Men. No matter what the topic, though, blamebrampton's sense of humour always shines through in her sharp observations and witty dialogue, and in Little Red Courgette she's able to showcase this to the fullest extent. It's a hilarious examination of government bureaucracy from the world-weary point of view of one Draco Malfoy, an employee of the Office for the Volumetric Standardisation of Edible Wizarding Greengrocery Produce. The veg related puns are numerous, and excellent, and both Draco and Harry are incredibly endearing. Big rec, for all her works!

Tenrou Island is one of my favorite arcs! I love this arc so much. I think this is possibly a controversial take. I don’t know. My favorite thing about shows is learning more about systems in the world. I think it’s just so interesting to see how wizards become s-class. This is going to be long. I am so sorry I love this arc so much. It’s a lot of Cana… I ADORE CANA. Plus a lot of Levy and Gajeel! I just think this arc features so many fan favorite characters so well. This is also before The Thunder Legon was nerfed so they have some cool moments. Just I love this arc so much!

1. I do think it’s crazy that they really just throw us into the arc with no filler episodes/arc between. I think this is one of the only arcs that doesn’t have filler episodes before or a filler arc.

2. Fairy Tail having a sacred place implies that other guilds do as well.

3. Something I find weird about S-Class wizards is why does the title follow you from one guild to another. Juvia and Gajeel were S-Class in Phantom Lord, but not Fairy Tail.

4. Silly thing time! Hiro Mashima trying to put all the main characters and main side characters on the island.

5. Lisanna and Juvia. I wish we kept seeing them as friends.

6. Evergreen and Elfman are one of my favorite ships and should be a main ship. It should be the big 5 instead of big 4. They were more together by the end than any of the other ships! I LOVE THEM!

7. Oh Mest… I miss your silly personality. Also how did he go from ok looking, to hot, to Nastu wannabe. I will be mourning when we see hot Mest for the last time.

8. Why did Makarov keep picking Cana? It seems a little cruel.

9. First Mavis mentioned. Mavis is one of my favorite characters of all time. I love her so much. Fairy Tail Zero is so good and made me love her more.

10. While pacing was my biggest issue for the last two arcs I feel like this is when the show found its pace. Without this arc the grand magic games would have not been as good as it was. I said what I said!

11. If I walked into the route and saw it was Mira I would have just walked away. Mirajane scares me the most out of all characters in the show.

12. I’m going to say it! I ship Lily and Carla! I said what I said!

13. I never got why Hades was so obsessed with Zeref. Because Zeref literally taught him how to use magic. I also wish we got more info on why he turned evil. It’s hard for to believe e he would attack Fairy Tail because he was a founder and was like best friends with Mavis. Him being Precht makes no sense because we never get a full explanation on how he turned evil other than he basically accidentally went down the alt right pipeline

14. I will never get over the Iron with a heart in the O. When I saw it for the first time I screamed and I still scream and fangirl over it!

15. Makarov talking Gajeel into joining Fairy Tail will forever be one of my favorite Gajeel scenes.

16. This arc is really when we start seeing Wendy come into her character and she becomes less of just the little kid to a true character.

17. It’s heavily implied you can’t say no to being Fairy Tail’s guild master. We see Makarov be like lol no and Precht being like lol too bad. Then we see Guildarts being like lol no and Makarov being like lol too bad! Then we see Guildarts being like lol as master you are now master again! Like can they really not say no?

18. I wish we could see Makarov in his prime. I know there has been discussion about how the series is going to continue. I don’t want next generation Fairy Tail I want to see old generation Fairy Tail. I want to see Makarov and his old team beating people up. I want to see Precht as guild master. Or even early days of Makarov being guild master! I would even be ok if it was like Fairy Tail Zero where it was a one arc story.

19. I do have a theory that Precht made Fairy Law. I don’t think it’s stated ever that Mavis made all the grand fairy spells but I maybe wrong. So that’s how he was able to make Grimoire Law.

20. Another theory I have is that Precht took care of Makarov after Yuri’s death.

21. Now this is an out there theory. I know it. I believe that Yuri called Laxus back to the island. HEAR ME OUT! We know that some things just happen in Fairy Tail especially with the living and the dead. Yuri promised to always protect Mavis also his son was in danger. His legacy (Fairy Tail) was in danger. I also think that it could have been Mavis, but I think it’s more poetic coming from Yuri.

22. Makarov saying it’s up to his successor and us being shown Laxus… I am going to call it right now. The end of 100 year quest we will be seeing Laxus becoming master. This would be a perfect way to end his character. This is not the post to get into it, but ya that’s my prediction.

23. God Slayers… oh the magic that was sort of forgotten about. How sad.

24. I will die on this hill. Laxus should have been the Lightning God Slayer. This would had been able to connect him, Ivan and Hades together in a perfect way.

25. This arc also has some of my favorite speeches.

26. One thing about me is I am absolutely sat every time Mirajane transforms.

27. Elfgreen is such an underrated ship.

28. I love Evergreen so much.

29. Capricorn is cool! I really like him even if he isn’t used enough. I love him! Probably second favorite spirit. First is Aquarius because I am an Aquarius and she is just awesome.

30. Favorite Juvia moment is when Meredy said she was wanting to kill Gray.

31. Also wow the show that has shown over and over again to become more powerful is to channel your emotions is showing how emotions makes people more powerful. I really don’t get why people give Fairy Tail so much hate using the power of friendship. It’s almost like we are shown over and over again that is literally how it works. More emotion = more power. It also makes me more mad now knowing the show was created because Hiro Mashima was lonely.

46. We are so spoiled in this arc. We got so much of side characters showing their skills.

47. So Nastu just got the flame lighting power. Honestly don’t understand how it worked! But I don’t care because it’s cool! Wanna know what’s not cool? The fact that Wendy is the only 1st generation dragon slayer to not get an extra dragon slayer element. I hope by the end of 100 year quest she gets something. I want cobra to give her poison. Because that would be badass.

48. The exceed side mission is so adorable and goofy. I LOVE IT.

49. To think of Hades just kept his Fairy Tail emblem he would have been able to win the final fight because the tree was restore

50. People say it’s a plot hole that Ultear was able to restore the tree because she said she can’t use her magic on living things, but I think it was just bad phrasing and really it’s like humans and animals she can’t us her magic on.

51. The Laxus ship that makes the most sense to me is that him and the thunder legion are just a poly relationship. Yes Elfman is apart of this.

52. Another reason why I don’t think Hades was always supposed to be a founder of Fairy Tail is because how did he not recognize Zeref as the man who taught him magic?

53. I love Gildarts and Cana so much! I know if Cana told him from the start he would have stopped going on his long jobs to take care of her. He is such a girl dad.

54. Everyone begging Makarov to let them stay and fight is another moment that makes me cry every time. Honestly the whole episode does.

55. Most iconic scene in Fairy Tail is them holding hands and no one can change my mind.

56. Mavis protecting her guild. Her babies! I love her. The foreshadowing of fairy sphere being more powerful than Acnologia.

Tenrou Island is one of the best arcs. It is also a soft reboot of the show. I can’t wait for the grand magic games. I don’t know if I’ll watch the clock arc. I haven’t watched it in years. It is always a skip for me because I want to get to the grand magic games. I know I missed a lot during this arc and forgot to write things down. I watch the show while working on my school work. Loteria Divination

Loteria cards are primarily used in the game of Loteria. It is a similar to bingo, but, arguably, more fun. Typically, the deck also contains poems in spanish which are used to call each card. An english translation is typed in red below each card.

Loteria cards do not have a sort of specific order like tarot. There is no "fools journey" for this deck. While many of the cards mirror tarot cards, they do not have the same meanings. For example, in tarot the moon commonly represents illusion, whereas in loteria it represents romance.

The numbers / order of the cards hold no significance. Read how you like, and make sure to have fun. Loteria is fairly light hearted and goofy in its messages, so use it and enjoy it!

1. El gallo (The rooster)

The one who sang for San Pedro won't return to sing again.

El gallo is a sign of betrayal. It is important to listen to his advice as he will not warn again. Listen to his advice while you can.

2. El diablito (The little devil)

Behave yourself buddy, so the little red one doesn't take you away!

El diablito is a sign to stay out of trouble, or that someone is causing trouble for you. You’ll want to avoid being swept away by his nonsense.

3. La dama (The lady)

The lady polishes as she steps, all along the royal street.

La dama is a sign to stop the drama and handle the situation with grace and dignity. It also could signify someone being boastful.

4. El catrin (The dandy)

Sir Ferruco in the walk, wanted to toss his cane.

El catrin is a sign to let go of what’s holding you back and go for something better. Break free and start fresh. Make a good impression.

5. El paraguas (The umbrella)

For the sun and for the rain.

El paraguas is a sign to protect yourself. It may be telling you to be prepared for what may come, be it good or bad.

6. La sirena (The siren/mermaid)

Don’t get dizzy with the mermaid’s song.

La sirena reminds you to not let emotions get the best of you. Don’t give in to temptations even if they seem like a good idea. Don’t listen to her song.

7. La escalera (The ladder)

Ascend me step by step, don’t try to skip.

La escalera is a sign to take things step by step. Slow and steady wins the race. La escalera gets you places you can’t normally get to. If you skip steps you will get hurt.

8. La botella (The bottle)

The tool of the drunk.

La botella is a sign to be cautious and watch yourself around substances. Don’t do something you’ll regret. It could be a sign of addiction or obsession. It could signify another person in the situation.

9. El barril (The barrel)

The builder drank so much he was like a barrel.

El barril warns against drinking excessively. Alcohol may be involved again as in La botella. Don’t overindulge in bad habits. Actions have consequences.

10. El arbol (The tree)

He who seeks the shelter of a tree covers himself with good shade.

El arbol signifies good decisions. Good choices yield good rewards. A friend could be offering you help like el arbol is. It can also be telling you to take shelter.

11. El melon (The melon)

I can take it or leave it.

El melon tells of a decision that may not have that big of an effect on you. It tells that life will go on, and so comes its decisions, whether those are minor or not.

12. El valiente (The hero)

Why are you running like a coward when you have such a good knife?

El valiente asks you why you are running away from an issue when you have the tools to solve it. All you need is bravery. Don’t hide behind your worries.

13. El gorrito (The baby bonnet)

Put the baby’s bonnet on, and he will not catch a cold.

El gorrito is a sign to protect yourself or others. This card warns you to take precautions against preventable harms. Make sure your health is taken care of.

14. La muerte (Death)

Death is closer.

La muerte represents a deep connection to your ancestors. This card reminds you that help and guidance is available. It can also be a reminder of your own mortality. Enjoy your loved ones in the present.

15. La pera (The pear)

He who waits, despairs.

La pera warns you not to hesitate. Take action. Don’t overthink. Doubting yourself isn't going to do any good and will cause you to miss out on the chance to act.

16. La bandera (The flag)

Green, white, and red, the flag of the soldier.

La bandera is a sign to stand up and fight for what you believe. If you are unsure, get sure. It also can mean to defend yourself. Don’t let people use you.

17. El bandolon (The mandolin)

Playing his mandolin is the mariachi Simon.

El bandolon is a sign that a good time is soon. Enjoy yourself. Let your worries go away. It also can be a sign that someone else is calling the shots in the situation.

18. El violoncello (The cello)

Growing up he went to heaven, and because he wasn't a violin he had to be a cello.

El violoncello is telling you to face the harsh reality of life. Realize that you don't always get what you want. Find a path around your obstacles.

19. La garza (The heron)

On the other side of the river is the sandbar where my honey sits, beak like a brown heron.

La garza tells that love is there, but you may have to work hard or travel to find it. Look and you'll find what you're seeking, just farther away than you thought.

20. El pajaro (the bird)

You’ve got me jumping to it like a bird on a branch.

El pajaro is a sign of procrastination. Don’t engage in pointless dither dallying. Pointless activity isn't going to get any work done.

21. La mano (The hand)

The hand of a criminal.

La mano tells you to watch out. Someone is being dishonest in the situation and making things worse. Don’t trust that those who have hurt you before won't hurt you again.

22. La bota (The boot)

One boot is the same as the other.

La bota says that one choice is just as good as another. It implies that nothing really will change despite the action you’ve taken.

23. La luna (The moon)

The lantern of lovers.

La luna signifies that love and romance are near. Emotions may be influencing the situation so use the moon's light to see the way forward clearly.

24. El cotorro (The parrot)

Parrot, land here and talk with me.

El cotorro warns of gossip. Someone may be talking behind your back. It also signifies that you need to talk to someone, or that someone has a message for you. Listen to what others have to say.

25. La borracho (The drunk)

What a stupid drunk, I can't take it anymore.

La borracho says that someone is drinking too much and needs to cut it out. Someone may be acting irresponsibly like a drunk. Be weary of overindulging and making poor decisions.

26. El negrito (The little black person)

He who ate the sugar.

El negrito tells you to enjoy the sweet parts of life even if times are hard. Look at the bright side of things. Be friendly and don’t let your current situation get you down.

27. El corazon (The heart)

Don’t miss me, my love, because I'll return in a truck.

El corazon tells that love is present and can be counted on. There is someone longing for something. Don't give up, what you are longing for will show up or return to you.

28. La sandia (The watermelon)

Juan’s belly was stuffed full of watermelon.

La sandia tells you to indulge in the good things in life. There is plenty to go around so don't worry. Things are going well and there is abundance.

29. El tambor (The drum)

Don’t wrinkle old leather, because I want it for my drum.

El Tambor warns of wasting something carelessly. Don't get rid of something that can become something new. Don't burn your bridges. Look at the situation from a different perspective.

30. El camaron (The shrimp)

The shrimp that sleeps is carried away by the current.

El camaron is a sign that you should be alert. He who hesitates is lost. Don’t get caught sleeping when a new opportunity arises. Now is not the time for laziness.

31. Las jaras (The arrows)

The arrows of the Indian Adam where they are joined together.

Las jaras indicate things that are tightly bound together, whether that be good or bad. It may mean a situation that you can not easily leave or win.

32. El musico (The musician)

The musician oiled his horn, but now he doesn't want to play for me.

El musico signifies expectations that have failed. Someone may have promised something and it's not being honored. It can also be about someone being stubborn or deceitful.

33. La arana (The spider)

Stun it with blows, just don’t let her get me!

La arana urges you to take precautions against an enemy who means harm. Do not wait. You need to act now before it is too late. It may also mean you need to take immediate action to resolve an issue.

34. El soldado (The soldier)

One, two and three, the soldier goes to the barracks.

El soldado signifies that you need to do your duty. Be strict with yourself. Finish your work. Someone in this situation may be too tough and uncompromising. It also may mean it is time for a rest after a long work day.

35. La estrella (The star)

The guide of sailors.

La estrella means there is guidance for you. Seek it out. If you recognize it, listen to it. You need guidance and can't solve this situation yourself.

36. El cazo (The saucepan)

The attention I pay you is little.

El cazo is a sign that you’re not paying attention, and may miss what you need to know. This could also mean that the situation is not worth your attention. You may be feeling ignored in the situation.

37. El mundo (The world)

The world is a sphere and we are the foundation.

El mundo is a sign that you need to be focused on the foundation. If there is a problem, look to the root of the issue. It can also mean that you are under a lot of stress and need help easing the burden.

38. El Apache (The Apache)

Ay chihuahua! How many Apaches are there with pants and sandals?

El Apache is a sign that there is someone you shouldn’t trust. You’re enclosed by dangers and problems and need protection. There may be someone trying to barge into the situation when it isn't their business.

39. El nopal (The cactus)

To which all go when they have to eat.

El nopal is a sign that there is an unforeseen source of help. It may not be the best fix but it is the only fix at the moment. Use it to your advantage, but don't let it prick you with its spines.

40. El alacran (The scorpion)

He that bites with his tail.

El alacran is a bad omen. It is a sign that someone is about to stab you in the back, or someone is going to break your trust. It is a general caution warning no matter the situation. Something bad is coming out of left field.

41. La rosa (The rose)

Rosita, Rosaura, come as I want you here now.

La rosa is a sign that someone in the situation has a great desire for something. There is a need to be clear about what you want or need. Be sure to communicate. Your desire can not be ignored.

42. La calavera (The skull)

As I passed by the cemetery, I found a skull.

La calavera is a sign of finding something that may be shocking or unpleasant, but not random for the situation at hand. When looking at the situation you may find something you weren't ready for, so be sure to prepare yourself for the unexpected. Look to your ancestors for guidance.

43. La campana (The bell)

The bell and you beneath it.

La campana tells that something is hanging over your head. It should be addressed promptly. If you continue ignoring it you will soon wake up when it starts to ring.

44. El canarito (The pitcher)

The pitcher goes to the water so often that it breaks and wets your coat.

El canarito signifies that repeating the same thing over and over is going to lead to problems. Someone is being obsessive and not willing to change their routine or agenda. They are carrying on despite the dangers. Try something new.

45. El venado (The deer)

The deer doesn't see anything.

El venado is a sign of ignorance. Someone is ignoring the situation, or isn't making the truth known. They are running away instead of facing the situation. They are acting instinctively and not stopping to see what's really going on.

46. El sol (The sun)

The roof of the poor.

El sol tells that there is always help no matter how bad things are. Look towards the bright side of the situation. Take all the help you can get. It can also mean to help those in need.

47. La corona (The crown)

The hat of the kings.

La corona is a sign of something of importance in the situation. Pay attention to it. A monarch can be unstable. It can also indicate success and victory. It may also mean you need to assert your authority, or pay attention to those who do have it.

48. La chalupa (The little boat)

Rowing, rowing Lupita goes, sitting in her small boat.

La chalupa says to take things slowly. Go steady and you'll get it done. Have patience. Just because her boat is small doesn't mean it isn't effective. Take time and go easy.

49. El pino (The pine)

Fresh, fragrant, and at all times beautiful.

El pino is a sign of a positive result in the situation at hand. It implies steadiness and endurance is needed to stay on top. Things are going well.

50. El pescado (The fish)

He who dies by the mouth, even though mute.

El pescado is a sign to bite your tongue before you cause any harm. Someone in the situation is talking too much and spreading trouble. Miscommunication and gossip is going on. Don’t fall for the bait. Some things are too good to be true.

51. La palma (The palm tree)

Keeper of the palms, climb the palm tree and bring me a magnificent coconut.

La palma signifies that someone is going to great lengths to help someone else in the situation. You will get what you desire.

52. La maceta (The flower pot)

He who is born to be a flowerpot will never leave the corridor.

La maceta tells that the situation is against you, and that you just have to accept it. Some people never change and you can’t expect them to now. It is what it is. This card also can mean that nothing much is happening or changing.

53. El arpa (The harp)

The old harp of my mother in law is no longer fit to play.

El arpa represents getting rid of unnecessary and useless things in your life, whether that be people or objects. The old ways of doing things aren't working and you need to modernize. Get with the times. Some things should be left in the past.

54. La rana (The frog)

What a jump your sister gave when she saw the green frog.

La rana is a sign that something may seem frightening at first sight but it really shouldn't be feared. You may be surprised by something in the situation that turns out to be nothing. Try not to overreact. Try to remain calm.

Okay, so, I'm revisiting a childhood interest of mine, and now I've got a kind of meandering question to ask about it.

I'm someone who's into Dungeons & Dragons solely through R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books, which I picked up somewhere around age 11 and read obsessively until age 15 or so, when I couldn't track down any more books. Unfortunately, I don't really have the nature of a role-player, so playing the actual game or listening to podcasts about it just isn't my thing. However, the novels were an absolute joy to me as a kid, even though I had no idea they were set in the DnD universe until years later lol. I'm re-reading those books now, and have managed to track down the newer half of the series that I never got to read, but now I'm wondering...

DnD, from the players' end, is all about making up your own guys and making those guys do adventure stuff in either out-of-the-box or homebrewed (or some mix of the two) settings, right? It's your own guys, who follow the story that either came with that particular game set or that the DM came up with. Or so I understand it.

So what are characters like Drizt Do'Urden or Bruenor Battlehammer when it comes to DnD stuff outside of the books? Are they character templates to show what players can do with a particular combo of race, class, alignment, and skills? Are they NPCs that can be used in DnD sessions? Player characters, even? They have articles on the wiki with stats and such, so I assume they exist in the actual game somehow. But the existence of premade characters in a game about making up your own guys kind of perplexes me. So what are those guys to you TTRPG folks?

My Top 15 Vaporwave Horror Movies

I thought I would put together a list of vaporwave/dreamcore/liminal aesthetic horror movies that I find to feel outside of time and space. That's sort of my vibe here on tumblr, and I also like the mantra of "if there's something you want to see that no one has made yet, make it yourself." These are films that I personally love, and the list not meant to be definitive. Remember also that art is subjective. I hope someone out there finds at least one film they want to add to their watchlist! It's been a minute since I've seen some of them, so let me know if I need to correct something.

15. Mandy (2018)

I wish I could add pictures for all of these entries, but I can still only add 10 pictures to a post blah. It's such a shame because I wanted to show off that gorgeous aesthetics of all these films. Oh well. This is a revenge flick about a cult kidnapping Nick Cage's girlfriend and him losing his marbles about it. Definitely recommend if you're the mood for vibes and/or Nick Cage NickCageing.

14. Come True (2020)

This is a haunting, fantastic vibes movie. It feels so otherworldly. It's about a homeless young person participating in a sleep study to be able to safely get some sleep. It would be an almost perfect film if it weren't for the just garbage ending. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, just skip the last 5 minutes, and take it for what the rest of the film is: beautiful.

13. Braid (2018)

This film follows a couple of young drug dealers on the run from their supplier crashing at a mentally unwell friend's house. The catch is they have to play along with their host's unhinged "game" while they hide out. Not gonna lie, this film is trippy af and definitely not for everyone. I can guarantee that no matter what, it is a ride.

12. Perfect Blue (1997)

A pop star retires to become a full-time actor, which angers some of her fans. Her sense of reality becomes warped when one obsessive fan begins to stalk her. I don't love some of the turns this movie takes when it comes to mental health, but it's hard to deny this film is classic that has stunning animation.

11. Skinamarink (2022)

This controversial found footage movie is sort of hard to describe because it's so otherworldly. Basically, two kids wake up one night to find their dad and all of their doors and windows are missing. Everything about this nostalgic yet terrifying film is vibes and aesthetic: liminal, vaporwave, voidcore, dreamcore, you name it. It feels like a fever dream, and it's a nightmarish journey you won't soon forget, for better or worse.

10. Vivarium (2019)

A couple are looking for a home to share. They follow a strange realtor to an even stranger labyrinthine neighborhood that seems to have no escape. If you're into liminal spaces, this film will definitely scratch that itch for you.

9. Revenge (2017)

This is a r*pe revenge tale that has absolutely beautiful scenery and cinematography. I love the sweeping liminal landscapes and vibrant vaporwave colors. It's a standard plot as far as the genre goes, but it's directed by a woman, so it has a different angle that I find to be superior to most films of the genre.

8. Don't Worry Darling (2022)

A 1950s housewife begins to suspect that something about her utopian community is not what it seems. This film seems to be a bit controversial, too, for some reason. Whatever the case may be, I adore the liminality and dreamy feel of this film. You really get a sense that this world is outside of time and space.

7. It Follows (2014)

This film is straight up about a sexually transmitted curse. Jay sleeps with her boyfriend for the first time, and then finds out she must outpace this demon that can take the shape of anyone forever lest it kill her, or she must pass the curse on to someone else. The shots in this film are to die for. Especially for connoisseurs of the liminal, vaporwave, and dreamcore. Highly recommend for the visuals and music alone.

6. House (1977)

Gorgeous decides to stay with her aunt to hopefully get closer with a group of six of her friends. The girls come to find her aunt's house is more than meets the eye. The visuals and absurdity are what make this movie. It's a classic for a reason.

5. Akira (1988)

Tetsuo gains psychic abilities via a secret military project and becomes mad with power. It's up to his friends and a small group of psychics to stop him. This is another classic anime. Its 1980s futuristic mentality really lends itself to the vaporwave atmosphere of the cityscape. I highly recommend this classic if you haven't seen it.

4. Censor (2021)

Enid is a serious film censor with a shrouded past that includes her long-missing sister. She watches a film that bears eerie resemblance to her vague childhood memories that begin to take hold of her as tries to piece them together. I don't think I'm totally clear on when this film takes place, which is what I love about it. It has a spooky surreal quality that will both draw you in and unsettle you.

3. She Dies Tomorrow (2020)

Amy is convinced she is going to die tomorrow. Her friend Jane comes by to comfort her, and then becomes consumed by the thought she will die tomorrow as well. This film is as strange as it is beautiful. It will either leave you in tears or confused af or both.

2. The Neon Demon (2016)

Jesse is a very young, gifted model who is new in town (probably LA). She quickly signs with an agent and begins getting gigs, breeding the contempt of the established models around her. This is probably one of the most visually appealing films I've ever seen. The music is on point. The low key acting is a vibe. I just adore this film. 10/10, highly recommend.

1. The Platform (2019)

A man wakes up in a prison that is an indescribable liminal pit where there are a seemingly never-ending number of levels. A platform full of food is lowered through each level once a day, and everyone on the lower levels must fight to survive. This film is just so utterly anticapitalist and gorgeous that I can't help but sing its praises. I think everyone should watch this movie at least once. It is horrifying yet eye-opening. Certainly one of my favorite films of all time.

As we drove to Downs, I kept stealing glances at Layla as she chewed on her tacos. She only asked for tacos but I of course got it for her in a meal with fries as well. Allie was singing along to the songs in the backseat and I glanced in the rearview mirror to see her dancing happily as she ate her fries. I bit my lip, trying to focus on the road instead of the girl beside me.

My mind drifted to when she placed a kiss on my cheek not only during the intermission of the game but also when I was standing outside with her. I didn't expect her to actually do anything, I just wanted to tease her but I wasn't mad that she did. I was cheesing like a 13-year-old boy inside and it drove me insane.

I'd know her for all of a week and I felt like she was consuming all of my thoughts. Every day she didn't come to school, the more I thought about skipping and driving to her house. I didn't want to seem obsessed, that's not something you do when you talk to someone for the first time only a few days prior and I knew that.

I tapped my hand on the wheel along to the beat of the song, looking over at Layla again but this time she made eye contact with me, a mouth full of fries as she sarcastically said, "Take a picture it'll last longer."

"Okay," I responded casually as we happened to pull up to the last set of lights that were red. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and took a photo of her and she frowned, swallowing the fries.

"Delete that," she deadpanned and I shook my head, locking my phone as the light turned green. We drove down the street and pulled into the parking lot, seeing Nate and Chris were already here eating McDonald's in the car.

"I'm gonna go steal Nate's fries. Be right back!" Allie jumped out of the back seat before I had even put the car in park making me laugh at her as she scurried around the car and jumped into the back of Nate's. I turned the car off, taking my seat belt off and winding down my window so the cold air hit my face

"Matthew," I heard Layla's serious tone and I turned my head to look at her again, "I'm holding your food hostage until you delete that photo."

She picked the bag up off of the floor between her feet, holding it tightly in her arms so I couldn't get my food. I heard Allie and Nate bickering from the car beside us but I didn't bother looking over.

"Why? You said to take a picture," I leaned over, trying to grab the bag but she pulled it closer to her body, leaning away from me slightly.

"I look disgusting," she frowned and I tilted my head at her.

"You didn't even see the photo," I state the obvious as I went to reach for the bag again.

"I don't need to see it. I had a mouth full of fries so of course I look bad," she seemed dead serious but I smiled at her nonetheless.

"You don't look bad," I told her, shaking my head and she huffed, "You look good all the time."

"Well, clearly you haven't seen me when I have just woken up," she rolled her eyes dramatically before throwing the bag in my lap. I let out a grunt when the heavy bag hit my crotch and she pursed her lips, "Oops."

"'Oops' my ass," I joked and she shrugged with a smile, taking another fry into her mouth. I let my eyes linger on her lips for a moment more before I grabbed my food out of the bag. I heard a phone vibrate and I knew it wasn't mine since it was underneath my thigh. As I dug into my phone, I noticed Layla pull her phone out of her pocket and her eyebrows furrowed as she stared at the small screen, "Everything okay?"

"Uh..." she trailed off, nodding hesitantly before she locked her phone, "Yeah everything's fine."

"You sure?" I double-checked, now mouth half full of food like she had done moments ago. Instead of responding, she quickly swiped on her phone and I heard the camera click on her phone. I furrowed my eyebrows as she smiled at me, making it hard to stay annoyed at her.

"Now we're even," she shrugged, the smile not leaving her lips as I shook my head. The rest of my teammate's cars pulled into the parking lot, all having their own variants of food and drinks. I was sure Dan was going to bring beer or weed and not to any surprise, he appeared out of the car with both.

"You think it's laced?" Layla spoke up and I looked over to see her staring at the bag of joints Dan was throwing around with not a care in the world.

"Nah Dan's super picky about what he smokes. Went on a whole tangent to me about strains and what they all do. Didn't listen to a word of it though," I told her honestly as she nodded, pursing her lips before she looked over at me.

"You mind if I have some?" she asked and I shrugged, scoffing down the last of my food before taking a sip of my drink, "Slow down there pretty boy. You're gonna choke on that if you're not careful."

"I always eat fast after a game," I admitted and she smiled, shaking her head like she was scolding a child, "You can smoke. Just don't get so high that you can't function."

She sent me a smile before nodding and jumping out of the car. My eyes followed her every move as she walked over to Dan and I saw both of their mouths moving. Moments later, Dan handed her a joint and she used her own lighter to light the end of it.

"You look like a goddamn dog drooling at her like that," I jumped in my seat and turned my head to see Nate standing outside the window of my door.

"Shut up," I rolled my eyes, taking a sip of my drink as I slid further down into my seat, my eyes always finding their way back to her, "I'm just making sure Dan won't try anything.

"Why do you care if he does?" he asked, a knowing smirk on his face as he leaned his elbows onto the windowsill.

"He's a dick," I mumbled and Nate hummed in response before he chuckled.

"Okay, enough. You look like Joe Goldberg just staring at her from the car," Nate pulled the door open and I turned my head to see him standing there, waiting for me to get out. I rolled my eyes, grabbing my phone, keys and drink from the car before hopping out and closing the door behind me.

"I'm not a stalker, dude," I grumbled and he chuckled as we began walking towards where everyone was now huddled around Ethan's car.

"You fucking look like one," he jokingly said quietly before we were a part of the group. As soon as we walked over, Layla moved her position between Dan and Ryder to stand between Chris and I. I resisted the urge to look down at her but as everyone talked amongst themselves, I felt her weight shift on her feet so she was leaning towards me.

I swung my arm around her shoulders causing her to lean into me fully. I could tell she was still tense as she continued smoking the joint, making sure to blow the smoke to the ground so as to not let anyone else breathe it in. I wish I could say the same for Dan who was basically directly blowing the smoke in my face.

"Dan," I said sharply catching the attention of his slowly redening eyes, "Quit it."

"What?" he asked, still blowing the smoke in my direction.

"You're blowing it right in my face and I'm like 5 feet away from you," I frowned at him as I felt Layla relax into me further, her tense nature depleting the more she smoked. Dan rolled his eyes before blowing the smoke behind him and I thanked him in my head, not bothering to verbalise it.

I felt her head shift against my shoulder and I looked down at her to see she was already looking up at me, her eyes slightly red and pupils every so faintly dilated.

"You okay?" she asked almost inaudibly and I nodded, smiling down at her before she returned the nod, resuming her head to a straight position to look at every one. She turned her attention to Dan before asking, "Dude, where did you get this from?"

"Some guy named Ray. He's down at South End," Dan explained and I felt Layla tense against me again, "Poor excuse of a house but the shit is good so I go anyway."

Layla just nodded, finishing the rest of the joint before she threw it onto the ground.

"Damn, didn't even think about sharing?" Ethan asked, a playful smile on his lips as he looked at Layla. Dan handed his joint to Ethan before Layla spoke.

"Wouldn't do its job if I let someone else smoke it," Layla shrugged, now placing her hands in the pocket of her hoodie. Ethan raised his eyebrows, clearly impressed as he took a hit of the joint before he looked at me.

"You gonna let loose yet, boss?" he asked, holding the joint out for me and I shook my head, my thumb mindlessly tracing circles over Layla's arm as she relaxed again.

"I'm driving and you know I don't do that shit," I told him and he shrugged.

He took another hit before saying, "More for me."

Ryder grabbed a beer from Dan's car, chugging it in an instant making me cringe at the frat-boy nature of my teammates. I liked them for the most part, they were good at the game and overall decent people but they had the tendencies of total fuckwits and I hated being grouped with their idiotic behaviour.

"I'm tired," Layla mumbled so quietly I almost didn't hear her as I looked down to see her eyes hooded and her body slumped against mine.

"We can sit on the hood?" I asked her quietly and she nodded slowly. I kept my arm around her as we walked through our small ground before I sat myself down on the hood of Ethan's BMW. She sat herself next to me, once again her body leaning towards me as I swung my arm around her.

"Dude, not my new car," Ethan whined and Layla went to stand up but I pulled her against me as I looked at him with a straight face.

"You were just sitting on it," I stated and he rolled his eyes before returning his gaze back to the ground. I had completely checked out of the conversation still, not listening to a word any of them were saying as I felt Layla's warmth radiating off of her body.

I noticed Allie and Chris running around the parking lot, Chris seemingly chasing Allie with something that I couldn't see from the dim lights of the parking lot. I shook my head, smiling at their idiotic actions.

"This is nice," Layla spoke quietly so only I could hear and I looked down at her to see she was still looking ahead.

"What's nice?" I asked her in the same hushed tone, returning my thumb to tracing circles on her arm.

"All of it," she mumbled before she looked up at me, her eyes now very red and pupils dilated even more so, "You're nice."

"You're not too bad yourself, Layls," I smiled down at her and a lazy smile spread across her lips.

"I've never had a nickname. I like it," she nodded like she was a little kid making me chuckle. I never liked being around people when they were high or drunk but she just seemed to be more relaxed, her cold demeanour disappearing by the minute.

"I'll have to keep using it then," I told her and she nodded once again, returning to look ahead of us at my friends, "Is Rockstar still on the table though?"

She laughed and it felt like music to my ears, my smile widening as she shook against me before saying, "You're a fucking idiot."

"At least I'm pretty," I shrugged, an amused look covering my face as she looked up at me with a roll of her eyes, "You said it, not me."

I stared down at her, a small smile still on my lips as her eyes scanned my face before she said, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Because you're the pretty one here," I blurted out without a second thought and I saw a small tint of red cover her face. She moved her to look ahead again as I leaned down, placing my chin on top of her hair.

"Bony ass chin," she mumbled, making me chuckle as I pinched her arm, "Hey!"

"Don't call my chin bony," I said back as my eyes drifted to where Chris was now sitting with Allie in the middle of the parking lot.

"Then don't have a bony chin while putting it on my head," Layla said back and I moved my arm off of her shoulders, sliding it down so it was on her back before I pinched her waist lightly. She sat upright, hitting me in the chest with her right hand, "Stop pinching me!"

"Or what?" I challenged and she stood up, moving to stand in front of me. She moved my right knee so it was slightly further apart from my other as she placed herself between my legs. I felt my breath hitch as she leaned forward.

"Or this," she simply said before she stepped back, holding my phone in her hand that I hadn't even noticed she slid out of the pocket of my hoodie.

"Layls, give me my phone back," I reached to grab it but she moved it further away, "Really?"

"You want it?" she smirked at me as she started walking backwards, "Come get it then, pretty boy."

I stood up from the hood of the car and I placed my drink on the ground before I slid my keys out of my pocket, turning to Nate and placing them on his chest before saying, "Hold these."

He didn't get a chance to respond before Layla bolted down the length of the car park and I quickly ran after her. Her laughter echoed through the parking lot but she made the mistake of slowing down to look behind her at me because her reaction time to seeing how close to her I was, was not fast enough. I grabbed her arm just in time before she could slip away, pulling her chest against mine but she moved her other arm to hide my phone behind her back.

"Can I have my phone back now?" I looked down at her, eyebrows raised as she smiled up at me dopily. She shook her head and I reached around her back to grab it but she was able to contort her arm so it was further away from my hand. I rolled my eyes as I let my hand drop to my side.

She chewed on her lip for a moment, looking in thought as she scanned my face before she moved her arm, sliding it up the bottom of her hoodie. She pulled her hand out again, the phone no longer in it.

"If you want your phone, grab it yourself," she smirked up at me and I groaned, still keeping a grip on her arm but not tight enough to be aggressive.

"I'm not taking my phone out of your bra, Layls," I stated and she shrugged with a smile still on her lips.

"Guess you're not getting your phone back then," she giggled and I shook my head, pursing my lips so a smile didn't slip through at the sound of her joy.

"You're the most stubborn girl I've ever met," I mumbled, trying to keep a straight face as she beamed up at me.

"And you're a pussy. Just grab the phone, Matthew. Not that hard," she challenged and I let my eyes fall closed, debating on whether or not it was a good idea to follow her wishes. The devil on my shoulder got the better of me as I gave in, pulling the hem of her hoodie towards me only to realise she wasn't wearing a shirt.

"You're really making me do this?" I asked and she nodded, looking dead into my eyes as I sighed. My fingers brushed against the warm skin of her stomach, the coldness making goosebumps rise on her skin. I slowly trailed my hand up as she raised her eyebrows, a smirk still on her lips.

I felt my hand touch a fabric that wasn't her hoodie and I hesitated, not being able to see under the sweatshirt to figure out where my phone was. I let out a huff, deciding to just get it over with so it didn't look like I was just feeling her up in the middle of the parking lot. My hand rose to the top of her bra, my fingers running along the top of her boobs before I felt something solid. I felt the rectangular shape and quickly slid the phone out before my hand left her hoodie entirely.

"Good boy," she patted the side of my face before she slid past me, walking back to the group as I stared at the ground in front of me. I tried to regain my consciousness and pull myself together but the feeling of her skin on mine made my hand tingle and my pants tighten. My mind was swirling with thoughts of nothing but her. Her skin, her eyes, her smile, her mind, her voice. God, her voice rang through my ears, "You comin' or what?"

This girl will be the death of me.

Batboys current ages:

Dick 27-29: His first phone may well have been the first iPhone. He also would have had most of the models of iPod. In his very early teen years people still used digital cameras. He would have been very active on Facebook and probably played facebook games with his friends (does anyone remember that gardening game on facebook?). He also would have played online games (www.friv.com would have been constantly typed into the browser). He also would have begged Bruce for an Nintendo Wii, really emphasizing all the sport games you can play on it (like we all did with our parents - mine didn't fall for it). Also always had the newest Game boy and played a lot of Mario Brothers. He also would have gotten a Playstation Protable.

Jason 19-21: He may well have gone through a minecraft phase when he was 11-13. He also would have had an early iPad growing up (those early ones were HEAVY) and probably used it to play that tombraider game (the one where you run and collect coins and it steadily speeds up while you dodge obstacles) and subway surfers. He has facebook and used it a little when he was younger but doesn't use it all now. He played with Dick's old Gameboys growing up but also had the newest Playstation Portable models.

Tim eternally 17: Definitely has a Nintendo Switch and got super into Animal Crossing (at least briefly). He also had to have an iPad for school. Fashion-wise he wouldn't be caught dead in skinny jeans. He doesn't have Facebook. He nearly fell for a lot of the TikTok conspiracies and if it hadn't been for his fact-checking nature combined with his access to the Bat-computer resources he would have fallen for at least one of them. He has a mac laptop and an eleborate gaming pc set-up at home.

Duke 15-16: Not so different to Tim but he is a little obsessed with Dick's/jason's collection of old Gameboys and Playstation Portables. They let Duke have them. Duke and Tim also mess around with Dick's old digital cameras (Tim is immediately disappointment by the quality - those digital point and shoots were not great - and looses interest. But Duke thinks they're fun)

Damian 11-13: Has his iPad and phone within spitting distance at all times (excluding missions and patrol obs). He uses his iPad to draw. He has all the newest electronics (mainly because everyone else at his fancy school has it all and he see's it as a status symbol, refusing to be thought of as lesser).

(I haven't included Playsation models in this because I'm not familiar and my light googling wasn't helpful enough. But they all would have had the newest Playstations corresponding to their ages).
