You weren't scared of your toddler. Really, you weren't. She just wasn't the nicest person in the world before 9am.
Her ability to sleep in was probably unheard of and uncommon when it came to kids, which is probably why she barely took naps anymore. But in the morning? Remi was practically a zombie. Think, a tiny version of the Incredible Hulk. Don't wake her up. It’s borderline dangerous when she's woken up too early.
With all that being said
you had to navigate this situation very delicately.
"Remi?" you whisper. "It's time to wake up sweets."
From her spot in the middle of her new toddler bed you hear her sigh, her little body moving up and down like asking her to get up is going to be the end of the world. Her sleepy groan sounded like an old man after a 50-hour workweek. "Shh mama, I'm still sleeping."
Justin had a habit of mumbling incoherent, gruff sounds instead of words when he felt it was too early, and it seemed Remi had inherited his dislike for mornings, complete with her own dramatic flair. He usually didn't even speak to you in the morning if he felt like it was too early to be awake.
You walked over to her half asleep form, running your fingers along her cheek and kissing her head.
"I guess daddy is going to leave for his game today without his special basket..." you trail off and she sits up abruptly in bed, her hair and eyes wild.
"Oh no! I forgot to finish his basket!" She was now miraculously fully alert, already using you to scoot herself out of bed to head out of the room.
"Remington, please go brush your teeth and get dressed before you go into the playroom. I'll help you grab your stuff and we can finish it together. But you have to go to the bathroom first, got it?"
She nods excitedly, tossing her blanket to the side and heading to the drawers to pick out some clothes. "Got it mama!"
You shook your head at the complete 180 in your daughter's aura as you stepped into the playroom to grab the basket she'd been working on. The Chargers were headed to Carolina this afternoon to play the Panthers and Remi took her pre-travel activities very seriously. She liked to call it her version of gameday preparations. Her job was to make sure her daddy had everything he needs to secure the win and more importantly
come home as soon as possible. The gifts would oftentimes be prepared ahead of time but for whatever reason Remi ran out of time yesterday and with Justin coming home in an hour, the two of you were on a time crunch.
This “special basket” started when Remi was two, as a way to distract her from the fact that Justin wouldn’t be home. The idea began with simple comforts like a favorite snack or a small toy, but her growing creativity and determination turned the baskets into heartfelt packages that meant as much to Justin as they did to her. Even if it was just for two days, that one night without him was hard on her. So you came up with an idea to have this “basket” ready for road games to keep everyone happy. You knew that leaving Remi was hard on Justin too. You could’ve sworn he cried a little the first time he had to leave for an away game when she was born, even if he denies it to this day.
Remi was running around the room, putting her finishing touches on the main items, then headed over to the kitchen, grabbing her step stool to look in the fridge for a couple Gatorades.
"Lellow? Or blue?" She said aloud to herself, holding both bottles up. She shrugged and closed the door, grabbing both of them and walking back to the playroom to carefully put them into the basket. You watched as she meticulously made sure everything was up to her toddler standards, stifling a laugh when she stepped back to examine her work, an adorably intense look on her face that seemed eerily familiar. She then asked you if she had any room to add one more gift.
Before you could answer, a voice sounded in the hallway.
“I thought I heard my two favorite girls in here.” Justin pokes his head in, kneeling down and opening his arms. Remi didn’t hesitate—she took off and jumped right into them. She kissed his cheek and clung to his neck as he stood, holding her securely in his arms.
“Hi daddy.”
“Hi mini. What are you up to?”
“Me and mama made you some stuff. Wanna see?”
He walks her over the table, gently setting her down so she can begin her presentation. She started with the Gatorades, pointing and naming each color. Showed him a “note” that she had finished and had you sign approximately three seconds before he came home, and a new Nike beanie because she claimed that the one he had been wearing was “yucky.” She had pointed it out a week ago, wrinkling her nose and saying, “daddy, it’s all fuzzy and gross!” before insisting that he needed a new one.
"Yucky" was one of her favorite words to get her point across.
Justin chuckled as he examined the basket. "This might be one of your best ones. I love it. Thank you both."
“I have one more suprise, wait right here daddy. Don’t leave.” Before he can give her a response she runs out of the room. She returns with her hands tucked behind her back, a mischievous grin on her face. “Ta-da!” She reveals her tiny stuffed panda. “You can take Baby Po with you. He’s my strongest stuffy, I promise. He can take care of you, like the o-line does, right?”
“You’re exactly right bub. Looks like watching film with dad has been paying off.” You hold out a hand, and Remi slaps it enthusiastically for a high five.
Justin grabs the basket and the panda and follows the two of you back into the living room to say goodbye. He gives Remi a long hug, spinning her around just to hear her laugh. “Good luck daddy, try your best okay?”
“I will try my very best. You’ll be good and listen to mama?” She giggles a little but says yes. “Pinky promise?” Justin asks and Remi nods solemnly.
“Pinky promise,” she repeats, holding out her tiny finger. Justin hooks his much larger pinky around hers, and they both kiss their joined hands to seal the promise.
“I love you, Mini. I’ll see you in two days.”
“Love you too. I’ll set a timer.” Remi responds, walking to her room and you can’t help but laugh a little listening to her humming a made up tune.
You can’t help but laugh. “She’s too much sometimes.”
Justin grins, watching her disappear. “She’s so smart, it’s honestly a little scary.”
“Tell me about it. Sometimes I forget she’s not even four yet. Never a dull moment with that one, that’s for sure. Anyway
” You gesture toward the counter. “You have everything?”
“Yeah, I’ve got it.” He exhales softly, his eyes meeting yours. “Guess this is it. I love you. I’ll call when I get to the hotel tonight.”
You hand him the basket and lean in for a quick kiss, your voice dropping to a playful whisper. “I love you more. Go kick some ass.”
Before Justin can respond, Remi comes running back into the room. “Wait! One more hug and kissy!”
He crouches down again, letting her wrap her tiny arms around him. She plants a big kiss on his forehead like he’s done to her a thousand, then pulls back with a giggle. “Okay, now you can go.”
Justin stands, shaking his head with a grin as he grabs his bag. “That kid, I swear
”
“She’s got you wrapped around her finger.” You smirk, giving him one last wave as he heads out the door.
After lunch and half of a movie, the two of you needed something new to do. “It’s such a nice day out. Do you wanna go to the park bub?”
“Yeah! I can bring my scooter!” Remi’s eyes lit up with excitement. This scooter had been the latest thing she loved. Every single day she wanted to take her scooter and go somewhere with it. Last week, she even asked if she could bring it to preschool.
“You can ride your scooter but you have to wear your helmet and wait for me to walk with you.”
"Okay mama!" She nods excitedly, already heading off to the mud room. “I need my shoes!”
A park outing usually consisted of Remi needing a snack, a bottle of water and potentially the stroller in case she was too tired to walk back home. You gathered all of your things while Remi waited for you. In the midst of gathering everything, a sudden crash that echoed from the garage, followed by a high-pitched scream has you frozen you in place. For a split second, your mind raced with worst-case scenarios. Then, instinct took over, and you bolted toward the door.
“Remi!” you called, your voice shaky as you threw the door open. The sight in front of you sent a jolt of panic through your chest.
She was crumpled on the floor, her scooter tipped awkwardly to the side. Her small body shook with sobs as she clutched her arm to her chest, her tear-streaked face looking up at you with pure fear.
“Oh, baby
what happened?” you asked, rushing to her side. Dropping to your knees, you carefully lifted the scooter off her and set it aside. “Did you fall off your scooter?”
She nodded wordlessly, her lip trembling, and reached out with her good arm. “Mama
” she whimpered, her voice breaking your heart in two.
“I’ve got you, sweetheart. It’s okay, I’m here.” Gently, you scooped her up, cradling her against you as her little fingers clung desperately to your shirt. Her sobs shook her tiny frame, each one twisting the knot of worry in your chest a little tighter.
As you carried her back inside, a thousand thoughts raced through your mind. Was it just a bad bruise, or something worse? Was she in unbearable pain? How could you have let this happen? You swallowed hard, forcing yourself to stay calm for her sake.
On the couch, you rocked her gently, whispering soothing words and brushing her hair out of her face. “Shh, it’s okay, baby. Mama’s got you. You’re so brave.”
It took a few minutes, but her cries eventually softened into sniffles. Her tear-drenched face pressed into your shoulder as you kissed the top of her head. “Let me see your arm, bub. I promise I’ll be really gentle.”
When she hesitated, you gave her an encouraging smile. “We’re just gonna look, okay? No touching.”
She nodded reluctantly, and you peeled back her sleeve. Your stomach sank at the sight of the angry bruise already spreading across her tiny arm. You bit back a gasp, keeping your expression neutral. “You’re so tough, sweetheart. I think we need an ice pack to help make this feel better.”
Although you probably shouldn’t have, you got on Google to check for signs of a broken arm on your phone while Remi distracted herself with a show. You’d noticed some discoloration already which wasn’t good and she wasn’t really moving it away from her body and after 15 minutes, you took off the ice pack and handed her the remote. “Rem, can you hold this with your other hand?”
She tried but quickly dropped it, her face scrunching in frustration. “It hurts, Mama.”
You put your phone down and paused the tv, making your daughter stop and stare at you like she was offended. “Sweetie, I think we should take you to the doctor for your arm. So we’re gonna go on an adventure in the car and the doctors are going to look at your arm and make it feel soooo much better. And then we can come back home and finish the movie.”
“I have to see the doctor like uncle Mitch for my ouchie? Why?”
“Yes! Exactly like uncle Mitch. But we’re not going to see him, we’re gonna see someone else because they have special tools and everything that kids need. Some things that I don’t have for you here. So we have to go see them and they’ll make the ouchie feel a little better. Is that okay with you?”
She gave you a small nod, holding her good arm out. “Can I hold you?” Which was her version of asking to be carried. You picked her up again, mindful of her injured arm and she nestled against you, her small fingers gripping your shirt as you buckled her into the car seat.
The drive to the hospital felt endless. You kept glancing in the rearview mirror, watching her doze off in between small whimpers. Once you arrived, you texted Justin: Call me as soon as you can. It’s important.
Remi clung to you through it all until the nurse offered her some children’s ibuprofen and asked if she’d like to watch a movie while waiting for her cast. The distraction worked wonders—she was now enthralled by the screen, giggling quietly at the animated characters despite the disaster that was the last couple hours.
You stepped to the other side of the room when Justin's name flashed on the screen and you answered the call. “Hey," he started slowly, his voice already sounding tense. "What’s going on? Your text sounded like it was an emergency. Are you two alright?”
“I’m fine,” you sigh, “but Remi fell off her scooter and her arm was really swollen so I took her to the emergency room. It’s broken.”
“Oh my god.” His voice cracked slightly, the weight of those words hitting him hard. “Okay, um
What did the doctor say? Is she in pain? Did they—do they have to do surgery? What happens now? How—how did this even happen?” The questions came rapid-fire, his tone a mix of panic and guilt. You could almost hear him pacing on the other end of the line.
“Justin, slow down,” you said gently, though you couldn’t help but smile a little at how frantic he sounded. Usually he was the chill parent. “She’s okay. She’s a little trooper, honestly. She’s been so brave. They gave her pain meds, and we’re just waiting for her cast to be molded. No surgery needed, thank goodness. They even gave us a little cast cover for when she showers. She’s very excited about that.”
He exhaled, the sound heavy and strained. “I can’t believe I’m not there. I should be there.”
“Hey,” you said firmly, keeping your voice low but reassuring. “She’s fine, and you’re not a bad dad for being at work. You know that, right?”
“But I should be there,” he said again, more to himself than to you. “She probably cried, didn’t she? I hate that I wasn’t there to hold her.”
“She did, but only for a little while. She was scared, but we got through it. And now she’s sitting here laughing at a cartoon. Babe, she’s okay. She knows you love her.”
There was a long pause, and you could hear him taking a shaky breath. “Does she? Because I feel like I’ve been gone so much lately. What if she thinks I don’t care?”
You softened, your heart breaking a little for him. “Justin, stop. She knows. She’s been asking about you nonstop since we got here. In fact, she’s probably going to demand to talk to you as soon as I hang up.”
“She’s really okay?” he asked, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant.
“She’s better than okay. She’s handling this like a champ. Honestly, you should be proud of her—and yourself. She’s got that strength, and pain tolerance, from you, you know.”
“That’s my girl,” he said, and you could hear the faintest smile in his voice. “Can I talk to her?”
“Of course. Let me grab her.” You turned back toward the bed, where Remi was still glued to the movie, her uninjured hand clutching Baby Po. “Bub, guess who's on the phone? Do you wanna say hi?”
Her face lit up instantly, knowing exactly who it was before she reached for the phone. “Hi, Daddy! Guess what? I’m getting a blue cast, and the doctor gave me a sticker! But they didn’t have Paw Patrol stickers, so I picked a fishy one. It’s funny, right?”
You can hear him laugh on the other end, sounding much more relaxed after hearing her voice. “Very funny. I bet that fishy sticker is the coolest one they had. Can't wait to see it when I get home. And Remi? Thank you for being so strong today. I love you more than anything.”
“More than cookies?” Remi asked, her voice filled with wonder.
“Way more than cookies,” Justin replied with a chuckle. “Even the chocolate chip ones.”
Remi gasped dramatically, her eyes wide as she looked at you for confirmation. “Wow! That’s a super lot, Daddy. I love you more than my pink sparkly shoes!”
Justin laughed, his voice warm and steady over the phone. “That’s the super-est love there is, mini,” he said softly, the pride and love in his tone unmistakable.
He hadn't let her out of his sight since he came home Sunday night. After the win, they had an off day, which he gladly spent catering to her every need.
“You hungry mini?” Justin asks, feeling like he could use a snack himself.
“Yeah! Can we get ice cream? Pleeeease?” she sang, fluttering her lashes in a way that seemed suspiciously calculated.
Justin froze, then cleared his throat dramatically, turning his attention to you with exaggerated disbelief. “Do you see this? Look at her!”
“What? Why are you looking at me?” you asked, holding back a laugh.
“This is your fault,” he said, gesturing at Remi as if she’d just pulled off a master plan.
“My fault? What did I do?”
“She got that from you! Batting those eyelashes and giving me that little face—it's the same move you use when you want something. You both know I’m powerless against it.”
“My baby broke her arm okay? If she says she needs ice cream then we should get her some.” You try to reason with him.
Justin shook his head, though a grin tugged at his lips. “Her wrist is broken, Y/N. Ice cream isn’t exactly a medical treatment.”
From the couch, Remi giggled, her little voice ringing out as she piped up, “I need ice cream medicine, please!”
“Oh, really?” Justin raised an eyebrow, glancing back at her. Remi nodded vigorously, her eyes wide with innocent pleading.
You give him a pointed look. “And where did she get this ice cream obsession from?”
Justin sighed dramatically, giving in with a smile. “Fair point.” He stood up and headed toward the cabinet in search of a bowl, the pink one has been a crowd favorite this week.. “Remi... chocolate or vanilla?”
She tapped her chin thoughtfully, casting a glance at her injured arm resting on a pillow. You caught her gaze and gave her a small nod, as if to say “go ahead.”
“Both, please!” she said, her voice sweet and determined.
“Smart choice, kid,” You said, grinning. “Put daddy to work.”
Before you can hear Justin's response to your teasing, the doorbell rings and you get up to go answer it. On the other side of the door is three large men holding sparkly balloons, a giant teddy bear, a couple bags of candy and a huge bottle of bubbles.
"You guys, what is all this?" You step aside to let Simi, Cameron and Foster in. Remi is already in Cam's arms, showing off her cast by the time you get back to the living room.
“Tell me everything. How did it happen?” Cameron asked, looking at Remi with such tenderness that it made her giggle. He was her second favorite player, right after her dad, and he always made her feel like the most important person in the room.
The little girl sighed dramatically, resting her head on his shoulder, and began telling her version of the story from the beginning. She didn’t stop talking until she’d relayed every detail to Cameron, then she shifted her focus to Foster and Simi.
As Justin came back into the room from the kitchen, he stopped, taking in the scene with a shake of his head. He could hardly believe how spoiled Remi was—though he secretly loved every second of it.
The moment Remi saw him, she hopped off the couch, toddling over to him with a huge grin. “Thanks for the ice cream, daddy!” she said, her face lighting up.
Justin smiled, lifting her into his lap. “Anything for you, mini.”
Simi, Foster, and Cameron all took turns showing off the gifts they’d brought her. As each one came out, Remi’s eyes grew wider, and Justin’s heart swelled as he watched her in awe. The best part, though, was when they all gathered around to sign her cast.
When it was Justin’s turn, Remi asked him sweetly, “Can you sign my cast, but no ugly footballs, okay?”
He chuckled softly, his heart skipping a beat. “No ugly footballs, promise.” He focused, carefully drawing the best heart he could manage.
You caught Justin’s eye for a brief moment, and in that look, you both shared an unspoken feeling. There, on the couch, in the middle of all the laughter and excitement, was the perfect little girl that you two had created—a living, breathing testament to your love. A sassy three-year-old, full of life and energy, who couldn’t be tamed, but would always be adored beyond measure.
Justin wouldn’t trade this for anything in the world. As he held her close, he felt like he wanted to bottle up these moments, to keep them frozen in time forever.

Experiments Part 2
So yesterday we played around with more things. I think triggers? Whatever it was I couldn't pick up on how/when/why it was happening exactly. But I feel like they were mostly triggers that I wasn't able to perceive.
I think I mostly write about things we did the day after because well... It's very hard to write about them at the time. There's a lot of confusion and I'm usually Very distracted >_<
So I can't really tell you how things started, or what order they went in... Or much at all I guess =/.
I think the first one was that after some conversation, I found myself getting more and more worked up. He'd say something and sometimes it was just, like, nearly normal conversation, or sometimes it was a pretty... racy comment. Or sometimes he'd send a picture. And I'd just get... Like a lot more excited. A LOT more. Whatever it was he said, or sent, or did was like... the hottest thing ever. It made sense at the time. Looking back at it, it seems kinda obvious that the specific things he said probably shouldn't have been THAT hot. But they were at the time.
Things escalated from there and it got to where I was pretty out of it. I remember hitting "peak excitement" more than a few times. And I wouldn't really come down. I'd just, stay excited. And peak again. It got pretty intense. And then it would just... Poof. Gone. Vanish. Which was super weird.
It's hard to describe it. Like maybe tossing a blanket over a lamp. The lamps still there, the heat and light are still building up. But the blanket is covering it, so it's like it's not there. Almost. But it IS still there, and could start a fire...
Okay I lost the simile a bit, but I think you get it I hope?
After that we took a break. I actually think maybe I wrote about that above part before? It sort of blurs together. I took a look but didn't see it. Maybe I just imagined posting about it? Lol
So then later on after a break, we were talking again, and I think he was playing with that same trigger. Actually I think this morning it had partially worn off, and I was seeing the actual way he triggered it. But it still had... Well. An impact. *cough*. I won't tell you what it was of course. Anyway, he was playing with it again, and I was getting very excited, and then something else started happening.
We would be talking, and then I'd just kind of lose the thread. I'd forget what I was saying, and thinking. It was pretty unsettling actually. But also, weirdly hot >_<. And I would... Giggle. Just this stupid, vapid little, ditzy giggle >_<
It was... Weird. But hot. Kinda conflicting. A lot of mixed feelings about it to be honest. But also Hot. So... Yeah.
Anyway, not long after that we had some other interactions go not so well, and we had to stop for the day.
This morning was... Different.
All the triggers had I think maybe worn off, but not entirely? It was confusing. I was seeing the things he was doing, things I hadn't seen yesterday. But I was still reacting. Not as strongly I think, but, there was this pressure to respond. And as he repeated them it got stronger, and stronger.
At one point I was trying to argue about something. Trying to make a cogent thought and I kept... Giggling >_<. Every time I tried the thought would just poof. I'd lose the words and Giggle. He was talking and, it was so hard to remember what I was arguing about. Every time I the thoughts would line up in my head they'd just vanish again with that stupid, vapid Giggle. He kept talking and I lost track of what I was arguing about. What we were talking about. Lost track of the fact that I WAS arguing. Everything just faded into this... Confused, Horny Fog...
It was both infuriating and... Intensely hot. >_<. Which is very conflicting and rather embarrassing for me. It's one of those things where like, I don't WANT to find it hot? But I do >_<
Anyway... Despite that being intensely hot, and getting me Incredibly worked up... We had to end things early.
It's been a VERY frustrating day >_<

After writing 40-ish pages in 5 days, I finished the next chapter far ahead of time. Normally, I finish them on Friday night or Saturday morning, but this next chapter has been really fun to write and I'm proud of it already. I have to go back and edit the whole thing, but still. Though, I have to say that I never anticipated how many times I would be tempted to break out a pair of clippers and cut my nails down while working on it. My sister took me to get my nails done on Sunday and I got the tiniest extension on some of mine since they had recently broken, and I wanted them to be even with the rest. Thankfully, I got to keep them fairly short and almond-shaped since that's what I always used to get. Since I have 4 jobs now, I can't keep long nails, which is perfectly fine by me as I don't do long nails anyway, but with how many times I accidentally typed numbers in the middle of my words while writing this part, you would think I had gotten claws! Honestly, I haven't gotten a manicure in over a year, and I think this is probably why I stopped the last time.
Also, ADHD is a bitch who demands energy drinks or else she won't let me focus. I think she hates me. She keeps giving me things to distract me from what I need to do. Like, yesterday, my brother-in-law, Mike (I call him my brother since he's practically like one to me at this point) bought me a few new games to play even though I have little time to do so. Being able to sit down and play them a little is part of my reward for finishing things early. I plan on reading through all of the comments you left me before settling in to relax for the evening. You have no idea how excited I am to read them all! I was getting notifications like crazy at work yesterday and I told myself I had to finish this next chapter before I started in on your comments. Now that I have, I plan on smiling at my phone like an absolute idiot for the foreseeable future 😂
Anyway, I'm sure I'll start writing again tomorrow, but for the time being, I'm going to take a break. I can't wait to see what you thought of the last two posts and I'm excited to play one of the games that has been on my wishlist for ages. I mean, look at this kitty! I get to play a game where the main character is a cute little tabby, walking around a futuristic city! I'm in for a great night; I can just tell. I hope the rest of your day is as incredible as I know mine will be! 💕

Uhhhhh. I had some anxiety going on relating to work yesterday but @valoricky cheered me on and helped distract me with ideas.
This starts off in the vein of my fic Welcome Back, but it for sure ends fluffy! It's Post-Hisui-Yeeting, and Ingo has been home for about a month or so.
Warnings for Emmet being incredibly unhealthy for a large portion of this.
Title: Spiral Word count: 2,661
The phantom of his brother was back.
Emmet sat up in bed alone, as he had for months, hearing the clinking of cutlery coming from the kitchen. Gavantula slept on the foot of the bed, clicking slightly in her sleep. None of Ingo's pokémon would sleep in his bed anymore, preferring Ingo's old room, and most of his own had given up as well due to his restless sleep.
He didn't blame them. He wouldn't want to cuddle in bed with himself either.
After he dragged himself up and out of bed, as he had for months, he stumbled into the bathroom. Eyes barely ghosting over the image in the mirror, he managed enough to brush his teeth and wash his face. A hand through his hair to smooth it back was the end of the effort he put in before he ate breakfast.
As he staggered out of the bathroom and towards the kitchen, he reminded himself he was just going to confront the empty space that was actually there. The sounds and smells of cooking were just in his head. After that he would simply make his chocolate protein shake, and then go over his leads in the living room piles before he got ready for work.
Archeops greeted him at the doorway to the kitchen with a headbutt to his thigh. The light of the kitchen felt too bright. He rubbed at his eyes and went to take the milk out of the fridge.
"Oh, good morning, Emmet!" the phantom greeted him in a voice that was actually really close to Ingo's. At least, he thought so. It had been so long since he had seen his twin, he was starting to fear he would forget his face and voice. "I am making us pancakes for breakfast! I thought they might go well with the preserves we picked up yesterday."
The phantom wore Ingo's black, train conductor striped apron, a small Joltik popping out from within the pocket on the front. It began to nibble the hem of the pocket, and Emmet momentarily wondered why his mind was wasting time on the details like this. In the end, it was pointless to worry about it; no matter the details, Ingo was not here.
He made his protein shake without speaking; was there a point of conversing with his own mind, giving it attention for creating a falsehood of his brother? But as he stared over the rim of the mug as he drank, the phantom played the dirtiest trick on him.
It set down the bowl it was mixing something in, turned, and walked towards him, expression full of tenderness and worry. "Emmet? Did you not sleep well?" It lifted it's hand, scar across the back and he startled, pulling away from it. Scars?! Why were there scars?!
His hands shook slightly as he gripped the mug with both now, and he swallowed the panic as best he could. "I slept." He'd had bad dreams before, dreams where Ingo had been so so badly hurt or worse, but this was the first time the hallucinations had carried that over.
The phantom dropped it's hand, concern etched in the crease of the brows, in the frown pulled deeper than usual. He averted his eyes at the scars that crossed his brother's face, wondering why he was doing this to himself.
Before he forced himself into more conversation, he escaped to the living room, huddling down on the floor between the couch and the coffee table. All of his documents and newspaper clippings and folders had been moved. He didn't remember doing it, and Elesa never removed them completely when she visited and helped him with household tasks.
When the phantom followed him, he pulled his knees up and hid his face into them. The couch dipped slightly behind his shoulder when the phantom sat down near him, leg next to his side. He kept his grip on the mug, the only thing he knew for sure was there. A shuddering breath escaped him when he felt a hand pet through his hair. He curled further into himself when the phantom used Ingo's voice to whisper soothing words.
An alarm let him know when it was time to put himself together for work. The phantom said something when he stood up, but he drowned it out. Putting himself into autopilot, he navigated back to his room and began his routine. He needed to keep their reputation for punctuality. When Ingo got back, he needed to be proud of how Emmet had kept Gear Station running.
The phantom followed him to work, dressed in Ingo's uniform.
~~~~~
Emmet spent the entirety of the day being irritable and distant. Although Ingo had tried to convince his younger brother to stay home after what had happened this morning, Emmet had resolutely ignored him as if he wasn't there. It was almost as if they were fighting.
However, this was not the way Emmet normally showed his anger, sadness or frustration. Usually his younger twin huffed and complained loudly. He puffed out his cheeks and insisted on being given a treat when Ingo was in the wrong. He demanded battles to determine who was right.
His never simply froze Ingo out.
Reports of Emmet's behavior, polite albeit subdued to passengers, reached him throughout the day. More than one member of the staff had approached him with concerns, one such visit explained as 'ensuring Boss Emmet hadn't come alone today.' Emmet always spoke bluntly, but with cheer; now, he was snapping short answers to staff who brought easily-solved issues to him. He offered no bright encouragement to challengers who lost to him.
When Emmet solemnly stepped onto his Doubles Train without even giving him a wave goodbye, he knew there was something about this situation that he was missing. With that in mind, he pulled Cloud to the side when he knew the other man was not busy.
With some heavy encouragement, Cloud began to detail Emmet's strange drifting through each day during Ingo's disappearance. Cloud recounted the times Emmet arrived to Gear Station dressed in Ingo's uniform, how he had responded only to his older brother's name or 'black boss.' He spoke of the days where Emmet would stay at Gear Station for 24 hours or more, falling asleep in odd places with Chandelure guarding him.
Every story added to the leaden weight in his stomach. Emmet had shared none of this with him, not even a glimmer in the entire time he had been back. Of course he knew Emmet had suffered while he was gone. His twin had never lost his memories as Ingo had, forced to live each day desperate to find the truth. Emmet spoke of how much he had missed him, had gone to great lengths to ensure his arrival at the correct stop had been as smooth as possible.
All of it had been at the cost of his own health.
Ingo's disappearance into Hisui was not something either of them could have prevented. It was ultimately an effort in self-destruction to feel guilty for it. But that didn't mean they couldn't share with each other the pain it had caused. Emmet often said they were born to face things together, and their forced separation was no different. It needed to be approached in just such a way.
Expressing his appreciation for everything Cloud and the others had been handling while he was away, he returned to the office he shared with Emmet to plan his next move. It was highly likely that Emmet would be resistant to his attempts at first, so he had to approach this carefully. The itinerary for his actions at home were carefully drafted, and rehearsed multiple options in his head as he and Emmet walked home with a heavy silence between them.
They put their coats and hats on their respective hooks, and he watched as Emmet stared hard at their paired uniforms.
"Emmet." His voice came out as soft as he could manage, and he waited patiently for his precious twin to meet his eyes. "I am here." The ever present upturn of his mouth began to waver, and Emmet took a step back. He didn't move to follow Emmet, not yet.
Emmet's smile managed to stay, and he shook his head. "No proof."
He held out a hand to his twin, palm up. When Emmet did not reach out to take it, he turned his hand over, now reaching for him instead. He stayed still, let Emmet's gaze roam over the line details of his glove. This morning, seeing the scars on his hand had caused the first overtly negative reaction Emmet gave him. So he made sure to keep them on for now.
Slowly, after staring long enough to win whatever internal argument was raging in his head, Emmet lifted his arm, mirroring the gesture and pressing the back of his hand to Ingo's palm. When Emmet's eyes flicked up from their hands to his face, he offered a soft smile. Emmet's smile softened in response but then he looked flustered, averting his eyes.
"Can I take your hand?" Emmet didn't look at him this time, but shook his head in agreement. He slowly, steadily wrapped his fingers around those of his twin, keeping his pace when Emmet's voice shuddered out a distressed murmur. "Come on, let's go sit down." Much as they had done as children, his twin obediently followed.
Sitting on the couch, he allowed Emmet to take as much distance as he wanted. Emmet took up a position with his one leg up on the cushion and the other normal, as if he was preparing to have a conversation where he was going to lay down the law. Emmet took that pose often when he was certain he was going to win an argument. It allowed for Emmet's knee to touch his leg, which was a good move forward. They didn't let go of each other's hand.
As he was about to ask a question, Emmet spoke up first. "Why." When he didn't seem to understand the question, Emmet continued. "Why can't you be real?"
"What makes you believe I am not real, Emmet?"
Finally letting go of Ingo's hand, Emmet rubbed both hands up and down his face, settling them over his eyes. "Haven't been real for the past two months." That timeframe included the month he'd been home; had Emmet truly thought their reunion was just something he'd imagined? He'd given no indication before today that was the case.
"What will prove to you that I am here now?"
Emmet dropped his hands to his lap, staring down at his fingers as they clenched and unclenched. "... I don't know."
"Can I touch you?" He waited for Emmet's answer, allowed him time to consider. His twin shut his eyes, let out an uneven exhale, and nodded. Slowly, slowly, he shifted on the couch to wrap his arms around his precious younger brother.
As soon as his embrace closed around Emmet, he sagged in Ingo's arms, returning the grip like a vice. Emmet knocked his forehead into Ingo's shoulder so hard it must have hurt, the ache resonating through Ingo's shoulder blade. When his twin's entire body began to shake with muffled sobs, he tightened his grip, resting his cheek on the top of Emmet's head.
"Nii-san... nii-san..." The cry came out bubbly, and he rubbed a hand across Emmet's back with one hand, the other still tight around his waist. For Emmet to have pent up this much sorrow, it must have been unbearable. So much hidden for so long, and for what? To not burden his older brother? To avoid the pain he had felt?
"Don't worry any more, love. I am here now, for real this time," he said into Emmet's scalp, punctuating the sentence with a kiss. They had been intimate multiple times since he had returned, shared many kisses and cuddles, held hands even at work. Emmet had always waited for him to initiate, so perhaps this feeling of unreality had been lingering with him this whole time. "Any time you reach out for me, I will be there."
Emmet sobbed into his shoulder for a while yet after that, and it died down slowly but he never let go of Ingo. Once he quieted down, his grip loosened slightly, and he turned his face to press his cheek against Ingo's chest. His breath evened out to the point that Ingo thought maybe he'd fallen asleep, but when he tipped his head down to check, Emmet was merely staring at him. "Can you call me that again?"
A warm chuckle swelled within him, and he pressed a kiss to Emmet's temple this time. "Of course, love. Any time you want." Matching his chuckle, Emmet nuzzled into him with a soft, pleased sigh. "Does it help?"
"Yeah." After a moment, Emmet shimmied to flop sideways, head into Ingo's lap. The signal to give him pets and scalp scritches was heard loud and clear, and he diligently set to it. Emmet stared straight ahead for the first few minutes. "Sorry about this morning."
"Hm?" was his answer, distracted with giving Emmet comfort.
"You were making pancakes, weren't you? I ruined it."
Ingo scoffed, as Emmet usually would when he said something silly, and didn't stop petting. Emmet turned his head slightly to turn his stare up at him, met with a proud smile. "I put the batter into the fridge, for when you were ready. We have to try the preserves together, on fresh pancakes, after all."
Emmet's expression smoothed into a fond smile, and he reached a hand up to press against Ingo's face. "So reliable!" A few pats against his cheek were fought off with a kiss to Emmet's palm, which pulled a giggle out of his younger brother. "The best big brother!"
He would do anything for Emmet, and he knew Emmet would do anything for him. Elder or younger, it didn't matter. They were twins, bonded together from birth, and no one was more precious to them than each other. Something simple, like making him pancakes, was only too obvious. Emmet had shown he would go to the ends of the earth and beyond to find him. Every day things were easy compared to that.
"And you're the best little brother."
"Do best little brothers get a kiss?" Feeling playful, he leaned down and gave Emmet a chaste kiss on the cheek. Emmet narrowed his eyes, fighting between a pout and a smirk. "No fair! Booooo! Try again!" Feigning confusion, he pressed one to Emmet's temple, and then his chin. "Nii-saaaaan" Emmet tried to whine, but he was laughing too hard.
Finally, he gave Emmet what he wanted, gently tilting his head to best receive a kiss. Emmet hummed happily into it, opening to Ingo's nips and licks, allowing him deeper. His twin clung to him, encouraging him with each little moan that slipped out.
They made love on the couch, slowly and softly, Emmet taking the lead on the pace. Ingo allowed his twin to reacquaint himself with all the scars he had gotten in Hisui, murmuring approval and sighs at Emmet's soft touches. Every so often, he would remind Emmet that it was real, call him 'love', which would pull a sighed confirmation out of him. Emmet would then double down on whatever he was currently occupied with, whispering how much he loved Ingo.
Afterwards, Emmet watched sleepily from the dining room as he made them pancakes. He spent the rest of the night letting Ingo pamper him, though he did throw a token 'you don't have to,' out every once in a while. When they decided it was time for bed, Emmet even let him carry him into the bedroom. They wrapped around each other, murmurs of how much they love each other continuing until they both fell asleep.
Face Your Dreams
Almost forgot to post this here as well!  @anthropwashere
Phic Phight 2021
Prompt from Anthrop: Any flavor of the Reverse AUs that strike your fancy. Who gets the ghost powers? Who becomes the ghost hunter? Who gets ghost magick'd into the villain of the week?
 Danny’s phone was dead.  Which was just typical, really.  His parents were brilliant, wealthy inventors that played with the fabric of reality on a daily basis and had managed to turn, not one, but two of Danny’s best friends into half ghosts, but they couldn’t be bothered to get Danny a phone that was actually reliable.  Although they hadn’t intended to do the half ghost thing and didn’t know about it.
Probably.
Maybe.
(Honestly, Danny didn’t know.  His parents were weird.  And Danny suspected they were keeping secrets.)
Back on topic.  Phone.  Not working. Which was a problem because Danny was something like ninety-percent sure a ghost had been following him for the last block or so and he couldn’t call for help.
Correction, he could call for help all he wanted, he just wouldn’t get any that would be any good against a ghost.  If he got any at all.  It was the middle of the night.
He should have taken up Sam’s offer of a flight home. Or Tucker’s.  But, no, he had to be sulky about how both of them were developing yet more really, incredibly cool powers and Danny was still just
Himself.
Faceless, boring Fenton.  Only notable for the number of bullies he attracted and the people he was related to.  No special skillset, no dreams he had any hope of achieving, no triumphs.  Nothing to contribute.  Not in and of himself.  Only useful to enemies that wanted a hostage.
He was about to be murdered by a ghost and he was still sulking.  God, he was pathetic.
(Not all ghosts were evil – Sam and Tucker’s stories had taught him that much, on an intellectual basis.  Was it too much to hope that he could reach home without the ghost attacking?  Too much to hope that it was just watching?)
White noise tugged at Danny’s ears.  It reminded him of the sleep CD Jazz played when Mom and Dad were being loud.
 and, also, oddly, of a video he’d once watched about what stars might sound like, based on how they vibrated.
Danny shuddered, his heartbeat redoubling as he picked up speed, reaching a run.  If he could get home, he could turn on the ghost shield and call Sam and Tucker from his home phone.  They’d be annoyed that he was bothering about a ghost so long after a patrol, but he was freaked out enough to not really care about their teasing.
(He’d been freaked out enough for the past two blocks.)
His breath began to catch in his lungs, his side burning. He splashed through a puddle, dark, oily liquid sticking to his right sneaker and pant leg.  It glittered in the light of the waning crescent moon.
Wait –
It hadn’t rained for weeks.
He slipped and fell, skinning hands, knees, and chin on the sidewalk.  Something wet, sticky, and smooth as silk spread over the pavement beneath him.  It bubbled like a tar pit, and captive stars shone from within.
Danny tried to push himself up, but the liquid held on to him, pulled him back down.
He was sinking.
He flailed for the sidewalk, reaching, trying to stay afloat.  It didn’t work.  His elbows were below the level of the sidewalk, and inky, glittery black dripped from his front.  It seemed to be eating through his clothes.
Forget useful help.  He’d take any help.  He screamed.
And he fell.
.
“You have such lovely dreams,” said the masked man, his horns curling into galaxies.  “Impossible dreams.”
Danny couldn’t breathe.  He was in freefall.  A vacuum.  No ground in sight, only the cold, heartless stars, perfect in their beauty.
(And his eyes.  Oh, god, was this really a ghost?)
It was his dream, to be an astronaut.  With this little twist, it became a nightmare, and yet—
Yet.
“You feel faceless,” continued the masked man.  “But there’s freedom in that, is there not?”
Danny shouldn’t be able to hear him.  There shouldn’t be any sound in space, and there wasn’t.  Not except for his voice.
“Freedom,” said the man, “to follow your wildest dreams, unshackled from responsibility, from reality, from reasonability.  No longer dependent on those that call themselves your friends, who claim to be your family, who walk over your dreams for the sake of theirs.”
Suddenly, Danny hit the sidewalk, and he could breathe again.  Something thick dripped from his nose, his mouth, his eyes.  He pushed himself to his hands and knees.  His clothing was gone.  His limbs were painted with the night sky in all its glory.  He froze, staring.
From Danny’s shadow, the masked man rose, towering over Danny until he felt like little more than a shadow.  “Don’t you want to have the chance to see your dreams come true, child?”
Danny blinked.  It was hard to force his eyes back open.  They seemed to want to stick closed.
“Who are you?” Danny asked, words garbled by the dripping stars trying to force their way past his lips.
“I am Nocturne,” the ghost said, leaning closer.
“You’re like,” Danny choked, “like Desiree.  I don’t want—”
Nocturne scoffed.  “Desiree.  A creature of wishes, of momentary things.  I do not care for what you wish for.  What matters is that you dream.”
There was something in Nocturne’s hand, round and white and moonlike.  It looked small, held between two of his fingers, but it had to be the size of Danny’s face.
“Don’t you dream of flying?” purred Nocturne.  “Of being among the stars?  Don’t you dream of a peaceful world, where your friends are safe, and the accident never happened?  Where you’re a friend, not a weapon supply, a sidekick, or a damsel in distress?”
Danny had been thinking something so close just minutes ago and he couldn’t—
“There, there, my child.  No need to cry.”  He brought the round thing closer.
Danny could see, now, that it was a mask.  Just his size.
“Close your eyes,” said Nocturne, gently, cupping Danny’s trembling shoulders with his other hand.  “Close your eyes and dream.  Let your face go, for a little while.”
(Danny did as he was told.)
.
“Hi, Sam,” said Mrs. Fenton, her voice crackling slightly through the phone speaker.  “Have you seen Danny today?”
“I haven’t seen him since last n—Since yesterday,” said Sam, correcting herself halfway though.  Mrs. Fenton didn’t know about their nightly escapades, and for good reason.  “Is something wrong?”
“I don’t know yet,” said Maddie.  “He just
  I haven’t seen him either.  He usually says goodbye before he leaves.”
He didn’t, but Maddie didn’t need to know that.
“Have you checked with Tucker yet?  Sometimes they hang out without me.  Guy things.”  This
 was also not entirely true.  Danny and Tucker hadn’t had a ‘guy thing’ for ages.  They’d been smoothly replaced with ‘ghost things’ like most everything else in their lives.
Sam
 might have felt a little bad about that.  All of their normal friend activities being replaced by ghost things, that is.  Often ghost things that Danny couldn’t really participate in, because Danny couldn’t fly or shoot lasers from his hands.
He did do a good job of setting up obstacle courses and covering for her and Tucker’s—
Wait, no, not the point.
“He hasn’t seen him, either.  Jazz doesn’t know where he is.  I don’t—”  She broke off, sighing.  “Call me if you see him.  Or tell him to call me.”
“I will,” said Sam, opening the window and preparing to take off.
“Thank you,” said Maddie.  She hung up.
Sam went ghost with a burst of green fire.  She floated up and out of the window, fading out of visibility as she dialed Tucker’s number.
“Starboy’s missing,” she said.
“Yeah, I’m already searching for him,” said Tucker, the microphone crackling with static but otherwise clear.  Tucker’s powers both did and didn’t mesh well with technology.
“Any luck?”
“No,” said Tucker.  “This is one of those times when I wish he did have friends other than us.  Then we could ask them about where he is.”
“Do you think he’s been taken by a ghost?” asked Sam.
“I mean, maybe?  There was that whole thing with Desiree
”
“And the second thing with Desiree,” added Sam.
“And Skulker.”
“And the second thing with Skulker.”
“And Spectra.”
“And the second thing with Spectra.”
“Not to mention Vlad.”
“What a freak,” said Sam.
“Are you picking up a pattern here?”
“Yeah, maybe.  Who’s only kidnapped Danny once?”
“I’m not sure
  Maybe it’s a new guy?  We do get new guys now and again.”
Sam sighed.  “Never mind that,” she said.  “Where have you looked so far?”
“Not too many places.  Do you want to meet up, or
?”
“No, we’ll have more luck going separately.  I’ll check in with you in a bit.”
.
A whole day passed without any sign of Danny. They did, however, find a lot of ghosts with stitched-shut eyes, which they decided was probably related and also incredibly creepy.
By that time, the police got involved.  Danny was officially a missing person.
But they were distracted.  Didn’t have the manpower to search for just one missing person.
Why?
The sudden surge in coma patients.
“I don’t get it,” said Tucker.  “Is that more of a, you know,” he lowered his voice, “doctor thing?  Like, if it’s a bunch of people, don’t you think it’s a disease or something?”
“The police think that someone poisoned ‘em,” said Sam.
“How do you know that?”
“How do you think I know that?”
“Dude.  You have to stop eavesdropping on the police.  I’m, like, ninety percent sure that’s illegal.”
“Not for ghosts, it isn’t.”
“Okay, I’m one hundred percent sure it is.  You’ve read the anti-ecto acts, haven’t you? I’m not the only one who did that, right?”
“It was, like, fifty pages thick.  And stupid.  The only reason I’d read it would be if I wanted to break the laws more efficiently.”
“Seriously?”
.
An alien world spread out below Danny, a place to explore to his heart’s content, the sky twinkling above him.  He couldn’t see it, but he knew it was there, in the nameless, infinite way you knew things when you were dreaming.
He was an astronaut.  An adventurer.  An explorer.
He was doing everything he had ever dreamed of.
The only thing missing were the people.  His friends.  His family.
But
 He could bring them here.  He knew that, too, in the same way.
He just had to reach out and touch them.  Feel them.  Take them.
(A bit of black and starlight in their eyes, a touch of the gift given to him.)
(Nocturne whispered in his ears.  A song only for him.)
.
They found the ghost responsible for the comas.  And maybe they should have realized a ghost was causing them, but Danny was the one who usually put the pieces together, and he wasn’t there.  Which was the problem.
(What Sam wouldn’t give for some kind of reliable ghost-detecting power.  Or even technology.)
(No, the Fenton Finder didn’t count.)
It was small, human proportions, human skin tone, where it wasn’t covered with some kind of ghostly paint that mimicked the night sky. Its hair was colored the same way, and a blank mask covered its face.  Seemed to be directing the green stitched-eye ghosts somehow, despite not saying a word. So.  All in all, typical ghost, if somewhat more annoying due to his lack of witty banter.
Then he shrugged off the thermos beam like it was nothing.  Almost like he was human.
Then Tucker froze.
The ghost was carried away from the fight by its minions, faster than Sam or Tucker could go.
“Tucker!  What was that?”
“Birthmark,” gasped Tucker.
“What?” asked Sam.
“That was Danny’s birthmark.”
“Oh my god,” said Sam.  “Did he really get himself transformed into a ghost again?”
“This seems different than Desiree,” said Tucker. “I don’t
  Were we really fighting him?”
Sam rolled her eyes.  “Let’s go get the Ghost Catcher.”
.
The Ghost Catcher was not in evidence in the Fenton basement.
“What now?” asked Tucker.
“Beat it out of him?” suggested Sam.
“That is a terrible plan.  No, I can’t even call it a plan.  It’s just bad.”
“Do you have anything better?”
(Tucker did not have anything better.)
.
(And Danny still couldn’t find his friends, to show them this dream come true.)
.
When about one in ten people in Amity Park was in a coma, things managed to get even worse.  The people who were asleep began to sleepwalk.  And sleep attack people.
Sam and Tucker were used to fighting ghosts.  Not humans.  They didn’t want to hurt anyone.
Especially Danny who was especially vicious. And also seemed to be targeting them.
.
Danny was so close.  So close he could almost touch them.  He could feel them, electricity and green things and dreams of power and justice.  He could feel them, feel them, feel them, and he was so, so close to inviting them into the dream and he needed it, needed them.  Wanted them.
His dream, the dream, his dream, it just wouldn’t be complete without them at his side, wouldn’t be right.
He reached for them, reached for Sam, brushed her sleeve and—
A meteor shower threw them apart.
.
Tucker dragged Sam away from Danny’s hand and the sleep-inducing liquid it was coated in.
“We have to go,” he gasped, looking out at the veritable horde of ghosts and sleepwalking humans.
“Yeah,” said Sam.  “Yeah, we have to – Have to regroup.”
They retreated to the Ghost Zone, and, predictably, were separated.
.
The ghost’s name was Undergrowth, and he was interested in Sam.  Interested enough to offer to teach her.
His power was the same as hers.  Nature.  Plants.
His rage against humans was
 much greater. Overwhelming.  Too much, too far, to extreme.  She was glad he didn’t see her as human, didn’t seem to know that she wanted to protect humans.
(That she wanted to save Danny.)
.
Tucker already knew Technus.  Had met him, fought him, beat him.  More than once, even.
So, he had to ask why Technus was suddenly helping him.
The ghost fixed Tucker with a look that managed to be both incredulous and flat.
“Ghost child,” warbled Technus, “I, Technus, Master of All Things Electronic and Beeping, know what being electrocuted feels like!  By the very power we both now wield!”
“Oh,” said Tucker.  “Yeah, that makes sense.  You were saying?”
.
Sam and Tucker stood in front of the portal, side by side.
“Ready to be a wake-up call?” asked Tucker.
“You’d better believe it,” said Sam.
.
Danny was caught, trapped in Sam’s vines.
“This isn’t working,” said Tucker, lightly shocking Danny once again.  The ectoblast didn’t help, either.  “Usually, this’d zap the ghost out of him, but
”
“Maybe we could try to overshadow him?” asked Sam, dubiously.
“Ugh,” said Tucker.  “My least favorite power.”
“It could be the only way to find the ghost actually responsible.”
“Let’s do this.”
.
Danny was thrilled!  He’d finally found his friends.  True, he couldn’t move, but—
The stars shuddered.  Shifted.  Blinked.
Nocturne was angry.
.
Sam was knocked out of the sky at full speed, making a crater in the dark ground.  People were gathered nearby.  Amity Park people.
This couldn’t just be the inside of Danny’s mind (overshadowing had never worked this way before, but, well, it wasn’t like they experimented with it a whole lot), it had to be some kind of shared dream.  A special power of the ghost, perhaps?
Sam fired up her powers, reaching for the nearby plants. They didn’t respond.
Crud.
This was a dream.  They just looked like plants.
Then Tucker lit up the sky like a dying star, electrocuting everyone in range.
.
Danny woke up, throwing Sam and Tucker out of his body, something metallic clanging against sidewalk pavement.  Out of his mind, out of his dream.  Out of that dream, the one Nocturne had made for him.
Oh, god.  He’d just spent the last week—Had it been a week, or longer? —out of his mind, in that dream, reality at one remove, if that.  He’d been blind and—
He reached up to his face, to that mask and he pulled.  It stuck. He pulled harder, and felt the goo sticking it on give, the mask coming away while dripping thick strands of ooze. He gasped.  And it felt like the first breath he’d taken in—
How long had it been?
He opened his eyes just in time to see Nocturne rise out of his shadow.
.
Both Sam and Tucker had more of an advantage out here in the real world, without having to worry about hurting people.  Well, without having to worry about hurting people more than usual.  Wrecking buildings and missing with ectoblasts were still concerns.
“Draw him towards the park?” called Tucker, once they got close enough to confer with each other.
“You grab Danny?”
“I don’t—” started Tucker.  He dodged a swipe from the large, starry ghost.  “He might be safer, if—”
A column of blue light strobed into the sky, and Nocturne was pulled into the Fenton Thermos.  The Fenton Thermos held by Danny Fenton.  He coughed, black liquid dripping down his chin.
“Hey,” said Danny.  “Thanks.”
“I’ve got to stop losing that thing,” groaned Tucker.
“I think the more important thing here is getting Danny some clothes,” said Sam, shielding her eyes.
“Yes, please,” said Danny.
“Glad to have you back, man,” said Danny, landing next to Danny and transforming.  “Honestly, without you, we kind of suck at the whole investigation angle.”
“What?” asked Danny, taking the sweater Tucker offered him.
“We missed you,” clarified Sam.  “A lot.  We kind of
 don’t do to well at anything about ghost fighting.  Or life.”
“Yeah, our social life sucked even more than usual.”
“Oh,” said Danny, wrapping the sweater around his waist. “That’s cool.”  He spit some of the black liquid out onto the sidewalk. “I need a shower.”
“Yep.  Hugs are going to be deferred until then.”
“I’m okay with that,” said Danny.  “I kind of
 don’t want to be touched, for a while.”
“Ah,” said Tucker.  “Well.  I’m depressed again.”
“Just.  Until the shower,” said Danny.
Sam reached out as if to pat Danny on the shoulder, then drew back.  “Do you want a flight back home?  Or to, uh, Tucker’s house?  To shower. And get some clothes.”
“How is that different from a hug?  You’ll still have to carry me.”
“It just is,” said Sam.
“It really is,” said Tucker.
There was a long pause.
“I lied, I want a hug so bad,” said Danny.
His friends practically flung themselves at him.
There’s a first time for everything.
Supercorp, Kara Danvers x Daughter!Reader, Lena Luthor x Daughter!Reader
Word count: 2890.
“How exactly did this happen?” Jamie looks at the F in your test and you roll your eyes to the sight of it. This is bad. This is really bad.
“I didn’t have time to study. But it’s ok, I’ll study for the next one.” You say, agreeing with your head to make Jamie and Maya’s worried expression ease up a little.
“Babe, you should’ve told me you needed to study. We could have had a study session or something.” They’re still worried. You look at Jamie raising one eyebrow, so she knows there’s more to the story. It takes her a few seconds, but she seems to finally realize your life is more complicated than stupid French tests.
“Oh, it’s a one-time thing.” Jamie says dismissing it with her hand. “It’s good, now you know what the rest of us feel when we don’t go so well.”
“Yeah. It’s great.” You joke with a smile, and that seems to be what’s necessary to make Maya less worried.
“We’ll study together for the next one.” She says and you agree.
It’s just when her mom picks her up from school, that you can tell Jamie what was really going on with you.
“Ok, so what really happened?” Jamie asks and you breathe deep before starting.
“Ok, it all started the night before when Kara put her head inside my bedroom to ask me:
“Hey kid. What are you up to?”
I looked up from the books I was organizing on my table to start studying. And since I thought it was something fast, I answered. “Nothing.” While obviously ignoring the books in front of me.
Then she went on like “Well. There is a big commotion downtown, a bunch of aliens got together to destroy some things and the whole place is a mess.” And I just shook my head agreeing because I thought she just went to tell me why she was leaving. But, like, she kept going and she asked me: “Do you want to come with me? I figured we could use some help.”
I was beaming in excitement ‘cause you know it’s kind of hard for Kara to just admit she needs help, so I thought there was probably a hell of a mess there. Which means she really did need my help, right? So, I was like “Wait! Really?”
She smiled too. “Sure! Go put on your-” But I used my super speed to change and I was in front of her all suited up in a blink of an eye. “Suit.”
“Let’s do it!” I ran out of the bedroom feeling like I could fly away just by being invited to it. You know it’s all I ever wanted. Kara seeing me as a person who could back her up during trial times. I was almost out of the house when I heard Lena’s voice from the living room and I came back to kiss her goodnight. So, she was like:
“Where are you guys heading to?”
And Kara said, check this out:
“I need back-up for this fight.”
I mean, she literally said the words I was so eager to hear and my smile just grew wider.
“I’m back-up!” I said, beaming in excitement.
But, well, you know my mom. She immediately went like:
“It’s school night.” She looked at momma. “She needs a good night of sleep.” Like I wasn’t even there to speak for myself! But lucky for me Kara said:
“Don’t worry, love. She’ll help me stop the aliens and bring them to the DEO, and I’ll do the clean up part.” Kara assured mom, who let out a sigh, like she does whenever she knows she is defeated.
“Are you sure you want to go?” She asked, putting her hand on my shoulder. And honestly, I don’t know what she was expecting. Did she think I was going to say no? Anyways, I obviously answered:
“Oh my God, yes! Don’t worry mom, I can handle it.”
Then she was like: “Ok, then. Don’t take too long.” She kissed my cheek, and then Kara’s mouth. “Be careful. Both of you.”
Then I looked at momma, still smiling, and she smiled back super excited. I just couldn’t believe I was going out to have adventures with Supergirl! I always thought I would have to sneak out with Superboy to have them, but then like, momma invited me to it!
So anyways, I tagged along to fight some hellgrammites that were causing trouble downtown. And like, dude, Aunt Alex gave me an earpiece for communication and Rao it felt so good to be a part of the team!
And she would talk to me through it. Jamie, I swear it’s as fun as you can think. So, aunt Alex was like:
“Superkid, be careful with the spikes. They’re strong enough to penetrate metal, it could harm you.”
And Kara was like:
“They also possess superhuman strength.”
And I was like:
“Okay, guys. I know hellgrammites, just chill.”
But like, aunt Alex went on:
“If you can’t win, try using their own spike against them as a last resource, Superkid.” And I was like ‘ok’, And then I hit one so hard he was thrown to a post light, and it bent, and made the light flicker. It was so funny, but I obviously couldn’t say that, so instead I said:
“Sorry. I’ll fix that!” And I flew to him, looking at the spike on his hand. Then I made my voice sound stronger and said: “You can come willingly or I can make you.”
“Pff.” It was his answer. What a dumbass, right? So, I had to keep using my strong voice.
“Got it. I’ll make you.” And then I punched his face a few times until he was unable to recover, and put him in cuffs. And I was so happy I yelled: “Got one!”
I looked at Supergirl, who had already caught the other three. She gave me thumbs up and a smile. Well. At least I kinda helped, right?
“Bring him to containment at the DEO.” I heard Alex’s voice through the comm, and picked up his floppy body and made my way towards Supergirl.
I asked if she was ready and she agreed with her head. So, I picked one other guy up, throwing each one over my shoulders, and I flew into the DEO with Supergirl, putting all four of them in a cell.
Aunt Alex was looking proud of me, which is incredible. You know the feeling! And she went like. “Great work, kiddo!”
“Thanks! That was fun, it was like playing video-game!” I said making them laugh. But then Supergirl went:
“Ok, time to go home. I’ll go clean up the mess they made, and I’ll meet you back there in a bit.” And she was ready to fly away when I held her hand.
“I can help. Still early.” I said pointing at my watch, but I lied ‘cause it was already late. Supergirl narrowed her eyes at me, and I knew she was going to say no, so I said: “At least let me unbend the post light.”
So she went:
“Ok. Let’s go.” Supergirl flew and I flew behind her.
In the end, I ended up helping her clean up everything, and we had to sneak in home so Lena didn’t see what time we made it back home.
And then, when I laid in bed, I was feeling exhausted, but I was so tired that it was really hard for me to fall asleep, so I missed my first wake-up call with Kara knocking at my door, and when Lena woke me up a while later, I was so tired it was hard to focus. But I could never tell her that, ‘cause she would be pissed since she was right in the first place. So, I rolled out of bed and came to school.
The problem was that it takes a lot of effort to shut off my super hearing and pay attention to the test, and I wasn’t able to do that while feeling so tired, hence my F.”
“Well, at least you had a good time supering yesterday.” Jamie says after you finish your story and you agree with your head catching your breath.
“It was awesome! Even your mom looked impressed.” You lean over a pillar and look at her. “Except Lena will be so mad that I got a bad grade, because I was supering.”
“Oh, come on. You can’t do everything. Save National City and get a good grade the very next day.” She said and you think about it. No, you can’t do everything, but you’re supposed to. Besides, school is more important than saving National City since Supergirl could have done it all by herself, clearly.
But Lena doesn’t need to know, does she? It’s not lying if she doesn’t ask you about it, so there’s no reason you will run to tell her about it, right? Right. It’s fine. You’re fine.
But you’re not fine.
“Hey, babygirl!” Lena says when she walks in home later that day, your soul almost leaves your body. You jump so high in your chair; she furrows her brows at that. “What are you doing?”
“Having a heart attack!” You put your hand on your chest, and you feel your heart beating fast.
“You shouldn’t get scared so easily. You have super hearing.” She points out and you think about it for a second. She is right, you shouldn’t.
“I was distracted.” You defend yourself, and Lena comes closer to kiss your head. She looks at the books in front of you.
“Ooh, français. Trùs bien!” She jokes.
“Mhm, yeah.” You smile through the pain you’re feeling to just blurt it out right there. It’s very hard not to say anything. You hate keeping secrets from your moms. “How’s-How was work?”
“Oh, you know Fridays and meetings. They don’t usually go well together.” Lena says that grabbing a bottle of wine and a glass. “But at least we have family night today, right?”
“Right.” You smile and she excuses herself for a shower (glass of wine in hand), while you finish studying.
Kara gets home a while later with dinner in both hands, but she still manages to push your books out of the way so she can put them on the table. She ended up dropping all of your books on the floor, and you smile at her.
“Sorry, little one.” She bends out to help you with it, and you hear a loud gasp.
“What?” You ask surprised, and you look at what she’s pointing at. “Oh no. Oh no.”
“You got an F?” She yells in pure shock, and your eyes widen at the sound of that.
“Shhh! Will you keep it down, please?” You lower your glasses to make sure Lena is still in the bedroom and can’t hear you. Lucky for you that’s the case.
“An F!” Kara’s still shocked. She picks up your tests and reads it. “You were aware it was a French test, right?”
“Um, yes?”
“Because I’m pretty sure this is English, this is a math equation? And would you look at that! You wrote stuff in kryptonese! I’m not sure she could understand that.” She keeps looking at it, making you blush in embarrassment until you pull it out of her hands.
“I was
 distracted.” You say, putting it inside of your book, and looking back at her. “Please, don’t tell mom.”
“Kid-”
“Please, mommy.” You try with your sweetest voice. “I’ll study harder for the next one and I’ll get an A, just please. Please. For me?”
“Don’t.” Kara looks at your pouting face and you can see she’s very inclined on hiding this with you. But she blinks twice looking away. “No, that won’t work. The pouting, and the ‘please for me’ bit. You know we don’t do lies in this house.”
“That’s not fair!” You cross your arms, upset. “Last week mom asked you if you ate all the chicken parm and you said no.”
“Are you serious?”
“You broke three glasses when you closed that cupboard a little too strong yesterday, and you told her nothing was broken.”
“Nothing important was broken.”
“Momma!” You pout again. “It’s not fair.” You hear Lena opening the bedroom door and making her way to where both of you are, and you raise an inquisitive eyebrow at Kara.
“Hey honey.” Lena says making her way behind the counter for another glass of wine. She looks at both of you having a stare down on the other side.
“One of us is going to tell her and she would rather if it was you.” Kara whispers close to your face, and you know Lena can’t hear her. You frown, and can’t believe Kara would do that. You can’t believe she won’t have your back about this.
“What’s-” Lena clears her throat, calling your attention back to her. “What’s going on?”
“Oh. Hi, love.” Kara makes her way to the other side of the counter and kisses Lena’s mouth. “Your daughter has got something important to tell you. I’ll go shower so we can have dinner and watch a movie.”
Kara leaves the kitchen and Lena raises her eyebrows at you, encouraging you to start. You don’t. You just look at her, and the book where your test lays inside. And you think about a lie. But you know you won’t lie, so it makes no sense for you to think of one in the first place. So, you get your test out of the book, and you come closer, holding on to it like it’s suddenly going to make it turn into an A instead.
“I, um, have something to tell you.” You sit on the other side of the counter, and she looks at the paper you’re clinging to so desperately. She does her eyebrow raise, and your heart feels like it’s going to stop with the thought of disappointing and upsetting her. Your mouth feels dry, your palms feel sweaty. It’s a whole ‘is this what a heart attack feels like?’ situation, before you can get your words out. “I didn’t do so well on a test.”
“Ok.” It’s what Lena says. She raises her hand at you, and you wince when you realize she will look at it. “Can I see it?” She pushes, once she realizes you’re still clinging to it, like holding onto a wrecked life-boat.
“Can’t you just take my word for it?” It’s your last desperate self-preserving act. Lena shows you her hand again, and you know that’s a clear ‘no’. “Ok.” You breathe out, handing her the paper. She takes it and looks at it, with furrowed eyebrows.
“Didn’t do well.” As in she’s saying that’s a very light way to put what she’s looking at.
“I’m sorry. I’ll do better next time, I promise!” You blurt out. “Please, don’t make me stop supering. Please. I swear it was a one-time thing. This won’t happen ever again.”
Lena puts the test down, goes around the counter and stops in front of you, while you still rumble your apologies. She doesn’t say a word which is very distressing. You wish she would just yell and ground you, just do something, instead of radio silent like right now.
“Ok.” She finally lets out. Ok? What does ok mean? “You’ll do better next time.” And then she hugs you. You take a few seconds to wire your brain and acknowledge what’s happening, before wrapping your arms around her, and letting out a breath you’ve been holding the entire time.
“So, you’re not mad?” You ask, still in shock. Lena gives you a chuckle and whispers softly in your ear.
“I’m not mad.” She tries to move away, but you hold her tightly.
“Still hugging, still hugging.” You say, earning another chuckle from her, and she doesn’t move away. “So, I can still go supering with momma?”
“You can still go supering.” She whispers again.
“And I’m not grounded?” You ask again, and you feel Lena moving to kiss your cheek. You smile, very happy.
“And you’re very much grounded.” She whispers, and finally lets go of you, with a bop on your nose. “But nice try.” Lena gets her wine glass and looks at you with a soft expression. “Can I just ask you a favor?”
“Anything.” You’re so happy she’s not mad, and that you can still go supering, whatever she says, you’ll do.
“That physics formula it’s exactly what I was needing for an experiment. May I steal it?” She smiles, making you smile back.
“Really? Wow, it’s almost like I wrote that for you.” And you have, in fact, because you were listening to her during your entire test. And you feel like she somehow knows that because the English part is the explanation she was giving about the experiment, then you wrote the formula she was trying to come up with, and the kryptonese part actually says ‘I love you, mom’. So, you figured she must have put two and two together and she possibly knows.
“Oh, and babygirl?” Lena adds, looking at you from her wine glass. “Khap ukiem rrip, inah*.”
Yeah. She knows.
*Khap ukiem rrip, inah = I love you, daughter*
Thoughts on Metroid: Dread
As you probably expected, I pre-ordered both the Nintendo Switch OLED and Metroid: Dread because I’m a simp for all things Metroid-related and I feel no shame :)
My personal assessment: 9.5/10 — My excitement is through the roof! Half a point off for the fiddly controls (boo).
I played both on the console itself as well as on my TV (and destroyed my neighbours’ eardrums with the sweet, sweet sound of Plasma Beam shots which they might not have liked so much but who cares).
I beat the game just yesterday evening on Normal Mode and did the clean-up to 100% today. Took me about 9 hours of gameplay with 52% items collected to beat the final boss and 11.5 hours for the 100%.
I didn’t use any guides or YouTube videos to help me out, but as a Metroid-familiar I know the way of the mighty Power Bomb and its block-revealing powers lol.
That said, the game is amazing! The atmosphere is awesome, the backgrounds are vivid, bright and alive and I got super distracted at everything more than just once while playing!
It’s clear MercurySteam put a lot of effort into creating a lush, beautiful world and I think they outdid themselves! The deep caverns, magma chambers and underground forests all look incredible and they house all sorts of different flora and fauna.
The music changes drastically between areas depending on whether you’re exploring one of the aforementioned magma chambers or an underwater habitat.
There are a bunch of new soundtracks in the game, but I loved that MercurySteam incorporated so many of the familiar soundtracks! When I started my playthrough and the first thing I heard was the Super Metroid theme on my surround system, I was SOLD lmao
There were so many nods and call-backs to old Metroid titles — one of them for example against Experiment No. Z-57, whose entire fight was Metroid Fusion’s Sector 1 SRX in a nutshell, complete with the X-infected atmospheric stabilisers. Awesome!
The movement is incredibly smooth, especially the Slide feature is just Chef’s Kiss. Traversing the different areas felt quick and intuitive.
I was a bit trepid when I learned that the D-Pad wouldn’t be used to move Samus along and that I instead needed to use the left analog stick, but the controls are decent and respond well to my inputs.
In a former post of mine I mentioned that Nintendo had announced that Samus’ movespeed would be faster than in any other game before — and that’s noticeable! You’re quick and nimble and while I love the “heavily armoured and impervious to physical attacks” archetype, this new Samus feels surprisingly dextrous. No worries though, she still hits like a truck.
I do have some issues with the Free Aim (which is not usable while moving when you’re holding the L button!), but that might just be because I suck at aiming and shooting in general.
It gives you a lot of freedom to shoot wherever you please, but there were some situations (boss fights mainly, that require you to shoot weak spots or hit small targets precisely) in which I found the Free Aim simply frustrating.
And if you want to properly utilise the Grapple Beam (which is a recurring major pickup in the franchise), you might need to use up to three buttons to do so. Which is just, way too many in my opinion.
Same thing goes for the Omega Cannon.
The new Aieon Abilities are nice, but the Flash Shift definitely takes the cake. Next to the Storm Missile, it’s the best damn thing they put in the game, hands down. I don’t understand the purpose of the Spin Boost when the High-Jump would’ve also done the job, but ok I guess.
The Phantom Cloak is a godsend, especially in E.M.M.I Zones. Which brings me to the robots in question.
While I’m still of the opinion that the E.M.M.I. aren’t scary, they do employ an uncanny intelligence when pursuing Samus and I got caught quite a few times before finding a way past them.
They’re unaffected by Samus’ entire arsenal, meaning you need to use all of your major pickups to sneak by or outrun them and the chase sequences were a lot of fun!
I also liked the tricky puzzles you were presented with if you wanted to grab some power-ups and the way the game forces you to use all of your abilities in order to proceed.
One such instance that I remember is right after getting the Space Jump, which you conveniently find right before getting back into a submerged area, meaning that using it to fly ever higher isn’t an option as long as you’re below the surface :)
Speaking of puzzles, there are a lot of Shinespark tricks in the game that you need to pull off if you want some nice missile expansions or energy tanks. Some of them are pretty straightforward, but others...
Hoo boy, others are difficult. And I’m saying that as someone who’s been playing Metroid games for twenty years. Some of the Shinesparks are so very tight and they require precise input timing that I wouldn’t be surprised if some players will voice their opinion on that on the internet lol.
Story-wise there were things that I enjoyed and things that I disliked. But, since talking about any of those would be kind of a huge spoiler, I simply won’t :) Play the game and find out for yourself!
And with “play the game” I mean exactly that! The game is fantastic; it looks awesome, it feels great, and it does a commendable job at closing out the 2D Metroid era, all things considered!
Honestly, hats off to MercurySteam for creating this awesome video game! For encouraging the player to think creatively to overcome obstacles and find ways to their objectives!
Because that is what makes a good Metroid game in my opinion — that it gives you the abilitiy to proceed (literally), but doesn’t take you by the hand. You need to figure out the rest by yourself. You’re a BAMF Galactic Warrior (hehe) after all, so use what you’ve got and you’ll find a way forward!
I love Metroid ♄
Home for Christmas
CW: just pure fluff, really. As fluffy and as soft as snow but not as cold. Idol! Mark Lee x reader. Johnny's there too but just as support.
WC: 3.3K
Summary: in which you're alone for Christmas and Mark tries to give you a gift to make you feel less sad.
A/N: Merry Christmas, everyone. Happy holidays if you don't celebrate Christmas. I hope you're all happy, healthy and safe. I'll also be taking a break from TBTC next week and posting something for New year's ✌
Long distance relationships were hard but they had their good sides as well as bad. One good thing is that you had a lot of time for yourself but on the bad side, you often felt lonely whenever you're out and see people with their significant others. You never really had to spend money on dates but conversely, you never had a chance to go out and show off your boyfriend in public. The time difference often made it hard for you to talk but neither of you ever missed out on your calls.
Mark would call you first thing in the morning when you woke up. It would be midnight to him but luckily, he was a night owl and didn't mind keeping you company while you got ready for your day. Then, you would go about your day before calling him at 5pm, 9am his time, to do the same for him. He often spent his mornings at home before heading to the studio for practice or to write so it was ample time to catch up and just talk about random things. He liked to watch you cook and he often would watch something in Netflix with you. Sometimes you were lucky enough to have him talk you to sleep, or sing you a song he's been working on to send you off into your dream world.
It sounds perfect in a way. You're both able to focus on your lives during the day because the other is safely asleep but you craved the physical aspects. You wanted to be held, you wanted to hold his hand, hell you just wanted to eat a meal with him sitting across from you at the table instead of on a little screen.
The past year and a half has been spent like this. You were childhood friends, growing up together before he moved overseas. You often spent recess running around together and sharing snacks. He wasn't necessarily your best friend, but he was one of the few friends you had growing up and even to this day. It's not that you weren't social but you just preferred being by yourself a lot. You kept in touch with the few friends you did have and that was all you really needed.
It was a surprise to run into him given the circumstances on both ends. He was an incredibly talented and relatively famous Idol in another country; and you moved across the country for school but ended up staying there after landing a good job. You were aware that he would be performing with his group but it wasn't your scene. And you couldn't get tickets anyway since they sold out almost instantly.
Out on your lunch break, you were grabbing a midday iced coffee. But you were trying to juggle setting up meetings and calls with a few important people so you weren't really paying attention when you went to grab the coffee, thinking it was yours.
"Oh I'm sorry." Both you and the owner of that drink said.
Finally, you looked up from your phone at the man and for some reason, you had a feeling of familiarity with him. After squinting your eyes and trying to go through your roledex of people you've encountered in your life, your brain finally figured it out. "Mark?" You say with bewilderment.
"Oh my god! It is you!" He pulled you into an extremely tight hug. "I saw you but I couldn't really tell and I didn't want to go up to a random stranger." He laughed and you couldn't help but do the same. Mark always had that effect on people, he would laugh or smile and no matter who he was with, they would do the same.
"What are you doing here?" You ask, somehow completely forgetting that he was due to perform the next day, which he reminded you of. "Oh! That's really exciting." If you were honest, you were distracted by how he's grown up. He used to be this cute boy that you would trade your fruit snacks for cookies with. But now he was incredibly handsome but still had those captivating eyes that could make you melt.
"This is amazing, I can't believe we ran into each other like this." He pulled you into another hug that brought a blush across your face. You were in a daze as he introduced you to the 2 other guys with him but you didn't really catch their names. You just noticed that they were also incredibly handsome. "But hey, if you're free tonight, we should catch up!" You agreed, thankfully.
And you could say the rest was history but beyond that one fateful day/night, you haven't seen Mark. A full year and a half later, you were entering your second Christmas without him but unfortunately, you weren't able to go home to your family to distract yourself from the boy you wanted to be with during the holidays. Not usually the type to be into overly romantic gestures, you uncharacteristically were craving the experiences that couples usually had in the movies. Your sisters told you countless times to stop watching Hallmark Christmas movies but you really couldn't help it when there was nothing else to watch on TV.
December 23rd. You were staring at your miniature Christmas tree that you had bought for your small apartment. The rest of your apartment was fully decorated in an effort to fill the emptiness you felt but it didn't seem to help much beyond wishing that Mark were there to experience it with you.
It was a perfect Christmas, the snow was falling outside and you reminisced about that rare snow day you had in your West coast town. That day was incredible. It was Christmas Eve and the whole city shut down due to the influx of white that they rarely had to deal with. Mark had banged on your door and begged your parents to let you go out and play despite it being Christmas Eve. That day was spent building snowmen, having snowball fights and everything before everyone went home and passed out to wake up to a white Christmas.
Mark had expressed to you that he missed that the most. Those snow days where everything shut down and you could just go out and be free to run around and have fun. You wished to be able to send some snow to him. But instead, you called him.
"Hi baby, how are you?" He said in a gravely voice as he had just woken up.
"I'm okay, just miss you a lot." You pouted and he copied your expression. "But look!" You showed him the view outside your window, including the snow capped trees and pillows of white on any surface it could cling on.
"Oh my god, that's beautiful." He sighed. "I wish I could be there to see it with you. I hate that you're alone this year for Christmas."
"It's okay." You flash a weak smile. "My coworker is going to drop off some food for me from her parents. I'll just have a Harry Potter marathon."
"Okay. I'll join you for that." He smiles. "My present for you should be showing up soon. I hope it gets there before the 25th."
"Hard to say. Doesn't matter if it does or not, I'm just happy to get something from you." You ease him of his worries. He often got worked up over the smallest things and you found it cute the way he would furrow his eyebrows in frustration only to breathe a sigh of relief when you told him to do so. You were his comfort and he was yours. Even if you were thousands of miles apart.
"I have to get going, love. I'll talk to you later okay?" He says and you are confused as he usually never has nice to do before noon. But you shrugged it off and assumed he just had some year end things to work on.
"Yeah I'll talk to you later. I love you." You blew him a kiss and he did the same before hanging up.
To be honest with yourself, you were starting to hate saying goodbye. Your heart would feel so heavy whenever a call ended and recently, that feeling got worse and worse with every call. Things were starting to feel like they were all for nothing. You trusted Mark and knew him well enough to know you were the only one that would be on his mind but that physical aspect was something you were craving. The simplest things like just being in the same room while you were both quietly working on your own things, exchanging loving glances every so often.
You dozed off watching The Nightmare Before Christmas and was woken up on Christmas Eve by the blinding white of the snow capped exteriors. Confused, you searched for your phone to check the time: 9:27. Mark has never failed to call you at 8AM every single day. It was your routine. It was your ritual. You send him a message but his phone doesn't even receive it. Is his phone off? You ask yourself. He did sound a bit off yesterday
 Or was he just tired and groggy? Maybe he's having a late night in the studio. He said he didn't have anything scheduled for a few days though. In an effort to mitigate your panic, you throw your phone to the other side of your bed.
Forcing yourself to roll out of bed and make some coffee to try to dull some of the panic you were feeling. He wouldn't just ice me out on Christmas Eve. He's probably just tired and fell asleep before he could call, you convinced yourself.
It was nearing lunch time and you still didn't hear from your boyfriend. You had spent the morning curled up on the couch watching Disney Channel Original Christmas Movies, trying to distract yourself but every time something romantic happened, you sighed and wished for Mark. His phone still wasn't receiving your messages. Had his phone died?
In desperation, you text the only other person you knew who was close with him: Johnny. You had met Johnny that day that you ran into Mark but never processed it until you began watching their performances on YouTube. Mark had given you Johnny's number so you could apologize for ignoring him but you would occasionally ask him for favours. Usually asking him to get something for Mark from you. He often said, "I only do this because I love Mark and you love Mark."
You [11:34AM]: Hey Johnny? Are you awake?
You [11:34AM]: Merry Christmas, by the way!
It was almost 4AM so you would be surprised if he was still awake but he often stayed up late with Haechan so you figured it was worth a shot.
Johnny [11:39AM]: what's up?
Johnny [11:38AM]: Merry Christmas to you too :)
You [11:40AM]: is Mark okay? I haven't heard from him since last night. I'm getting worried.
You watched as Johnny's message bubble appeared and disappeared a few times. He was hesitating
Johnny [11:42AM]: he's fine. You'll probably hear from him soon ;)
You [11:42AM]: ?? What's that supposed to mean?
Johnny simply replied with a shrug emoji and you wished you could send a punch through a text message. But you sighed and continued sipping on your hot apple cider as you pressed play on another movie. Johnny doesn't lie so I'll believe him for now.
You had somehow fallen asleep and you only realized when you felt your phone buzzing next to you. Without even checking the caller ID, you press the green answer button and put it on speaker as you tried to pull yourself out of the afternoon nap haze.
"Hello?" You say, barely above a whisper.
"Hey baby, sorry I've missed your messages. Johnny said you were worried about me?" Mark's voice shook you awake. You scrambled to sit up before picking up your phone and taking it off speaker to hear him more clearly.
"Mark? Are you okay?"
He simply laughed, "I'm okay babe. I'm sorry for worrying you." He apologized again.
"No, it's okay. I was just worrying over nothing. What were you doing?"
"I was at the airport." He said and you could tell there was something up by the tone of his voice. Mark could never lie to you even if he tried.
"And?"
"And I need you to come pick me up." He teased and you became even more confused which made you a bit upset as you didn't like being led on.
"Mark I can't, you're in another country." You roll your eyes even though he can't see.
"Baby, I'm not. I'm here." And it finally clicked in your head.
"Wait! You're here? Like here? Like in the same city?" You try not to scream.
"Yes, exactly. I wanted to surprise you better but the snow delayed things
"
"It's okay I'll come now!" You practically yell into the phone.
"Drive carefully!" He warned you before hanging up.
Like a tornado, you tried to clean up your apartment so your boyfriend didn't think you were a complete slob. At the same time, you were trying to pick out a cute outfit and do your hair in an effort to make yourself look somewhat presentable.
With your best effort, you shrugged when you checked yourself in the mirror before pulling on your parka and heading out the door. As your car warmed up, you reminded yourself that Mark had seen you at your literal worst. From the late night mental breakdowns to a hungover morning from having a few too many drinks with your coworkers, Mark had seen it all and always assured you that you looked amazing. Maybe he was lying a few times during those moments but he never made you feel like you were anything less than perfect for him.
You did your best to drive calmly to the airport. There wasn't much of a choice as the other cars on the road were also trying to get to their destinations safely so traffic was moving at a slower pace. After what seemed like the longest car ride you've ever taken, you pulled into a parking stall at the airport and checked your phone to see that Mark had sent you the gate he was at, waiting for his luggage. You practically sprinted across the parking lot and road, having a few close calls with other pedestrians and a few cars. But you couldn't help yourself. You were finally getting to see him.
Arriving at his gate, you tried to catch your breath as you scanned the crowd around the baggage carousel looking for Mark. When the two of you finally made eye contact, you burst through the crowd and jumped into his arms. You thought you would tackle him down but he was surprisingly strong and not only caught you but picked you up, allowing your legs to wrap around him like a koala baby. People aw'd and some even clapped while others pulled out their phones to candidly capture your reunion.
"You're here." You choked back tears, breathing in his scent and making sure you locked it up in your memory for future use.
"I'm here." He breathed into your ear which triggered the tears to start falling. He placed you back on your feet but steadied you in the warmth and safety of his arms. He chuckled while he wiped your tears away, "why are you crying?"
"I don't know, I just missed you so much." You sniffled while looking up at him with wet eyes. It's been so long that you had forgotten that he was taller than you by more than a few centimeters. So when he leaned down to kiss you, you were surprised but also extremely comforted as a wave of warmth filled up the emptiness in your heart.
"My little crybaby." He placed another kiss on your forehead.
You clung on to each other until his suitcase dropped down from the chute. Hand-in-hand, you led him to your car. Amazingly, you navigated the whole way there while beaming up at Mark the whole time. He reciprocated but occasionally pulled you to the side to avoid running into someone else.
The car ride back to your apartment was just full of you two talking about anything and everything. From when he planned all of this and how he managed to get out of his activities to Johnny almost ruining the surprise when he struggled to say something that would both ease your worries but not let you in on the secret. The whole time, Mark's hand was on your thigh as you needed both hands to properly manoeuvre your car through the snow. You sometimes caught Mark looking outside with pure wonder and amazement as he took in the image of the city blanketed by the snow. The smile on your face never left as you tried to process every moment with him to keep in your memories.
"So how long are you staying?" You say as you take the elevator up to your apartment. His arm was wrapped around your shoulders and you had a feeling that your boyfriend who was usually uncomfortable with physical attraction, wouldn't keep a hand off of you the whole time he was there.
"I have to leave the day after Christmas." He says quietly.
Trying not to be upset by the short time together, you reminded yourself that it was better than nothing. "We'll make it work." You say simply to him while learning up to plant a kiss on his cheek.
Mark felt overwhelmed by your apartment. The moment he stepped in, he was greeted by the sweet scent of vanilla and oranges. He tried to take as many mental notes as he could while walking around and taking in every single detail of your place. This was your home and he felt like every little knick-knack strategically placed by you was a piece of you.
"Here." You handed him a cup of apple cider to warm up.
"Thank you." He added a kiss to your temple. Suddenly remembering something, he let out a little gasp before placing his cup down on the coffee table and going to his backpack. He pulled out a box wrapped in red paper and a golden bow that was slightly flattened from its journey to the other side of the world to you.
"What's this?" You ask when he places it in your hands, taking a seat next to you.
"Just open it." He smiles. The excitement was practically bursting from him as he anticipated you opening the box.
"Your gift is probably on the doorstep of your mom's place right now." You sighed.
"It's okay baby, I can't wait to open it but just open yours now." He said.
The lid lifted to reveal a necklace with a delicate golden chain and a little purple gem dangling from it. "Mark
" you coo, your eyes welling up with tears again.
"Are you going to cry again?" He laughs and you playfully poke his side. "I know purple is your favourite colour
 It's not much but I thought you'd like it." He said softly while he fixed it around your neck. You smiled up at him before you situated yourself in his lap, straddling his thighs.
"It's perfect." You kiss him, "what else did you get me?" You pull back when he tries to deepen the kiss.
"What do you mean?" He stared blankly at you.
"You said it's not much so where's the rest of my present?" You say mischievously.
"You said it's perfect but you want more?" He cocks an eyebrow up.
"Well
 I haven't seen you in a year and a half, there has to be more." You tease.
"I'm your present aren't I?" He smirks, grabbing the bow from the box and sticking it onto his head.
"I guess
" you laugh while leaning in to kiss him again. "You're lucky you're cute." You say as he stands up, making sure to wrap your legs around him before turning towards your bedroom.
We’ll See About That (Elijah x Klaus x Reader)
Requested by anon. I wrote this two times cause my laptop decided to be an asshole and wouldn’t let me post it. Enjoy
Tumblr media
(Y/n) was raised by her parents and the small pack of werewolves they belonged a few miles away from New Orleans. However she wasn’t a child brought to life as a result of a happy marriage, her mother married her father because of an arranged marriage, so s he fell in love with a warlock while being stuck at a toxic marriage. When (y/n) was born everything became worse, her father started to suspect and her mother took her stuff and (y/n) in the middle of the night and left, she was only 11 but she was thrilled to leave everything behind.
However, she never cared for the whole werewolf thing nor cared if she was a witch, she was spiritual yes, meditating and cleansing her house, having different type of tarot decks and aligning her chakra was something that brought her peace, but going in further was like dipping your fingers in the honey jar and expecting your hands to not get sticky.
(Y/n) studied abroad, once again leaving everything behind and making her own memories and decisions as a young adult. She knew that to “active” the wolf gene meant you have to kill somebody and she never had that intention, one night though when a man decided to follow her home and attack her, she lost control and had to not only deal with activating the curse but also dealing with the police and finding a way to keep her criminal record clean.
As graduation rolled around (y/n) decided to go back to the U.S.A, New Orleans to be exact. She could never go back to the pack her dad belong, she hadn’t talked to him in years and she doubted he would want to help,so her mother told her that a lot of different people have their home in New Orleans, so she decided to try her luck there.
-
“A pretty woman like you alone? It must be my birthday”
It was (y/n)’s first night in New Orleans, so she decided to go and have a drink, maybe get an idea or two on how to find someone that is willing to help her. She was sitting peacefully drinking her cocktail when a tipsy and absolute douche approached her.
“Well go find a cake, cause I for sure ain’t giving you any”
“Too bad, i’m sure your icing taste great”
Her facial expression showed how disgusted she was by the vulgar comment, she was about to answer a man when she saw a man nudge the annoying creep and take her hand in his.
“My sincere apologies for keeping you waiting love, you look beautiful”
He brought her hand up to his lips and looked at her right in the eyes, the wink he gave her made her understand what his plan was at. She smiled brightly at the kind stranger
“No worries babe, let me introduce you to this absolute creep that tried to hit on me”
“Oh how amusing. Listen mate, you have two options, one is to keep going at this and force me into take actions that will make me your worst nightmare, second is go on with your night while your arms are still attached to your body. Choice is yours”
He didn’t even say anything, he just looked down and left, (y/n) could see his already fragile ego crumble right in front of her. She started laughing, finding the entire situation cut out of a comedy.
“Thank you so much, let me buy you a drink”
“I think it goes the other way around love”
“It’s the 21st century, also you deserve one for scaring him to death. I’m (y/n) by the way”
“Klaus, pleasure to officially meet you”
They ended up talking and drinking for hours on end, the conversation flowed effortlessly making them feel comfortable with each other. Klaus walked (y/n) home at the wee hours of the morning, oh how beautiful she looked as the first streaks of sunlight caressed her face. They hugged and made a promise to see each other again
-
(y/n) slept until 3 p.m and woke up to her stomach demanding food after the back to back drinks she had last night with her new friend. She did her morning routine and decided into putting on a yellow sundress and placed her hair up into a quick updo, last was her moisturizer and sun screen, to protect her skin but also give her a nice glow and she was ready to hit the streets.
She got distracted by a very talented musician that played on the side of the road when she bumped into a mans back. As Elijah turned around all he saw was light, he couldn’t really put it into words but the woman that was standing right there looked like she was surrounded by the holy light and angels.
“I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking at where I was going”
If sirens every existed, she was one of them. Her voice sounded like little singing bells and those eyes, her gaze could stop the devil. He was so astonished by her beauty that he didn’t realized the human like fairy had stopped talking, making him look like he was mute.
“It’s alright dear, no need to worry”
“I got distracted, I am usually very aware of my surroundings”
“I understand, this town is full of distractions. Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Elijah”
“Ohhh YOU are Elijah”
“Pardon?”
(Y/n) remembered the name from last night. Klaus had mentioned how him and his brother Elijah with his sister Rebekah came back to town. Of course Elijah was not aware of that conversation
“Your brother Klaus, I met him yesterday when he came to my rescue. I’m new here so he kept me company”
“What a kind and rare thing for my brother to do”
Of course Klaus would put his best foot forward when he meets a girl, well at least she was not hurt by him nor by anyone, such a shame for a miracle like her to get harmed. Regardless of that, Elijah got an incredible idea
“Well since my brother made a friend-which never really happens- I like to say that they are my friends as well, so would you accept my offer and accompany at our home for dinner tomorrow?”
“Oh you don’t have to, it’s fine”
“I insist, since you are new here someone should show you hospitality”
(Y/n) couldn’t really keep up with this whole thing, two handsome brothers coming to her aid and wanting to bring her over for dinner, it was almost too good to be true. She would dumb if she didn’t accept
“Fine, but i’ll warn you I have a big appetite”
-
As Elijah informed his brother of the interaction he had with (y/n) and the invitation he gave her for dinner the brothers started to sharpen their knives. Both of them requesting specific dishes from the chef they hired, arguing over what wine goes best and what music should they play or if there’s going to be music.
The hours passed and (y/n) stood outside their door. Klaus was the one to greet her first, he was stunned when he saw her. Her hair was down and curly, she wore a satin maxi dress with a plunging neckline and a slit on the side that showed her right leg.
“You really outdid yourself love, you look ravishing”
“Why thank you Klaus, you look amazing in this suit as well”
Klaus had chosen a formal attire for the evening, a black suited he had tailored back in the 20s, you could never go wrong with a classic.Klaus offered her his arm and she linked hers with his, walking in the house that looked like it was cut out of a fairytale.
“(y/n) you arrived, I must say that you are breathtaking”
“Thank you Elijah, you look very handsome as well, do you sleep with a suit on?”
Klaus took the opportunity and pulled a chair back for (y/n), helping her and then took his seat as well.
The night passed beautifully,(y/n) felt so pampered and the brothers felt euphoric by being at her good graces, they also spend the entire night keeping mental notes on who (y/n) smiled more, who’s joked she laughed, what compliments she gave, what foods she liked and most importantly who she talked to more. As the night came to an end (y/n) insisted into taking her car, besides two glasses of wine were nothing compared to the tons of alcohol she consumed when she was in college.
“Thank you for everything tonight, it was truly amazing”
“Of course love, with a guest like you anything else would have been an embarrassment, right brother?”
“Yes that’s quite right Klaus, we hope to see you again then”
“For sure, I wouldn’t pass on tasting that delicious food again”
She hugged both of them and then they saw her disappearing into the night, leaving them both with the sweet taste of happiness that they got to dine with such a magical being, they had to agree that (y/n) was the most peaceful and calming human being they have met.
“Well brother, I am happy you bravely put on a fight but I think I’ll take it from here”
“We’ll see about that Niklaus”
Summary: Rumor has it, if you clean up one of the droids in the temple the day before your Gathering, Anakin Skywalker himself will take you to Ilum. Or: Anakin loses his lightsabers and is absolutely popular with teeny tiny Initiates. AN: Also on AO3! Saw a post by @shatouto and decided I need to write
There were two things the younglings looked for when they saw Anakin Skywalker enter the crĂšche.
The first one, of course, was whether he was injured. It was common knowledge that Skywalker-and-Kenobi somehow always got involved in the most reckless and crazy missions and with the start of the war, that hadn’t changed.
If Anakin was not injured, then it was alright for the children to throw themselves at him with no need to watch out for any possible complications. Usually, those actions were accompanied by a cry of pure joy and delight, or, in the case of the children sensitive to touch, an enthusiastic wave sufficed.
The second thing they watched out for was whether he had his lightsaber with him. Now, this was the point where it got especially interesting for the younglings. If Anakin had this lightsaber with him then it would be just another regular fun day playing around listening to him tell stories about the war and the brave soldiers he fought with.
But if he didn't have a lightsaber and was not heading into the direction of the toddlers who couldn't be trusted to be around such a weapon, chances were high that instead Anakin was going to spend some time with the Initiates, particularly those who were supposed to go on their Gathering soon. As it were, Anakin had a bit of a reputation for losing his lightsaber. It wasn’t that he just lost it somewhere in a ditch by being careless. When Anakin Skywalker came to tell you how he had lost his lightsaber, it would always be a story worthy of the stars about glory and dangerous risks and perhaps a Senator or two that needed to be saved.
This morning when Anakin headed into the rooms of the Dragon Clone he was very much not holding onto his lightsaber. He was also uninjured, even though he felt a little like hurt in the Force, but that wasn’t anything unusual in these times and nothing a calm day around his fellow Jedi couldn’t fix. Therefore the general assumption was made that he was alright enough to hug.
“Good morning,” Anakin greeted the tired senior Padawan sitting at the desk near the entrance.
The Weequay teenager smiled cheerfully despite the long bags under his eyes. Anakin was sure he had seen the Padawan in the halls of healing just yesterday when he had returned to Coruscant with a couple broken ribs, but Anakin wasn’t going to rat them out for sneaking off to crùche duty. He had done the same often enough, still did if he was honest. His trips had become less frequent with the war effort and his own Padawan to train, but he still tried to go there somewhat regularly. It was his duty as Obi-Wan’s first Padawan to make sure the next one would be a promising and interesting youngling after all.
“Knight Skywalker, what has brought you here today?” The boy asked.
“I spoke to Master Cherem yesterday, I’m picking up the Initiates for their Gathering.”
The boy’s eyes darted to the belt where Anakin usually kept his lightsaber and found the weapon missing. His already impossible bright grin seemed to lighten even more.
“Is it time already for the next group to go?” The boy asked. “Oh, wow, time sure flies
 Well, you know the protocol I assume?”
Anakin rolled his eyes mock-annoyed and swiftly filled out the forms the Padawan had given him. “I haven’t lost my lightsaber that often. I happen to enjoy taking younglings to Ilum.”
And it wasn’t even a lie, Anakin really did enjoy it, even if there were plenty Knights who preferred not to be stuck on a small ship with a bunch of overly excited children who were so nervous, some might even vomit. Anakin actually enjoyed the sensation, the younglings running around him like the bees in a hive. He had always been the most relaxed in places where there were so many Force-sensitives, their own tunes in the Force distracted from the abyss Anakin could gaze into so easily at all times.
“Have fun, Master Skywalker, and may the Force be with you.”
Anakin smiled in turn and made his way into the crĂšche proper. As soon as he stepped into the rooms the Initiates were in, a hush fell over the group. It only lasted for a split second, as long as the children needed to realize he was there, then Anakin opened up his arms and let himself be dragged to the floor.
“Hello, Knight Skywalker!” They chirped from all sides before beginning to chase him with all kinds of questions about his most recent missions.
Laughing, Anakin tried to quiet the group, but they proved to be as convincing as always. One moment he had been lying on the ground, the next he was sitting in the middle of the storytelling corner, surrounded by pillows, blankets and of course a hoard of younglings listening attentively as he told them a simplified version of a mission that had contained significantly more trotting through the dirt and complaining to Obi-Wan than he relayed to them. They didn’t seem to mind that he embellished some parts. They likely heard enough gruesome details about the war already, saw the clones walking their halls and the Jedi returning home with incredible injuries. If Anakin could give them this peace of mind, that would be enough.
“Anakin, why are you here?” A Kel Dor youngling asked after he had finished the story.
“Well,” Anakin said slowly, dragging out the word. “I was going to take the oldest of you to their Gathering, but I think I can also just-“
The rest of his sentence was lost in-between the excited cheering of the children.
“When are we going?” A Tholothian child asked. They appeared to be one of the older children, so likely one of those Anakin was going to take to Ilum.
“Depends,” he replied. “As soon as you can finish packing.”
As soon as he had said it, five of the children broke away from the pile and rushed into the directions of their rooms, cheered on by the rest of their clan. Fondly, Anakin watched as they disappeared behind different doors before returning his attention to the remaining children.
“Alright,” he said. “Who wants to hear another story in the meanwhile?”
The expectant eyes all focused on him were answer enough.
Tumblr media
on the first day of christmas when you gave me all them kisses, boy you showed me things, come hold me please and never let me go.
Tumblr media
"Five days until Christmas and you're still decorating the tree?"
You yelped at the sudden sound of your boyfriend's voice, dropping your over-accessorized ornament and watching helplessly as it shattered against the floor.
Immediately, you whined. "Jungkook!"
Jungkook suppressed a grin at the furrow of your eyebrows and the pout of your lips, kicking his shoes off and tossing his coat onto the couch. He didn't mean to scare you, really. You even knew he was coming over. It's just that you left the front door unlocked (as you always did when he was on his way, despite him constantly scolding you for it) and there was no way you would've heard him come in over the sound of Jingle Bell Rock blaring through the house.
"Sorry, baby," He chuckled, bending down beside you to help pick up the remnants of your best ornament. "I didn't mean to scare you."
You glared at him in between collecting the shards of glass in your hand. "I spent hours making that."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah. Hot glue gun burns, sparkles stuck on my face and everything."
Jungkook took the pieces of glass from you with an amused look on his face, standing from his kneeling position to toss them in the trash can you had earlier moved to the living room for easy access. "I'm sorry. I'll make you another one."
"It's not the same." You sulked, finding fun in being stubborn and giving him a hard time. It was getting increasingly difficult though, with his rosy nose and ears and that little gleam in his eyes.
It was then that he made his first move of the night, tugging you by your oversized Rudolph sweater so quickly that you had to latch onto his shoulders for leverage with a squeal. His grin only seemed to grow once you were officially in his space, taking notice of your lack of pants and the snowflake stockings that appeared to be in their place instead.
"You don't look too sorry," You chuckled, heart stuttering at the way he was gazing down at you in such close proximity.
Jungkook shrugged, nudging his nose with yours. "I'm just happy."
They were such simple words, but it was the way he said them, the way he looked at you when he said them. You couldn’t lie, the excitement of spending your first Christmas together, completely alone, was incredibly infectious. It was gross and it was corny and everything else you swore you would never be, but you were in love with Jungkook. Devastatingly so. You from nine months ago probably wouldn’t even recognize the present you; a fact that friends, family, and even Jungkook alike loved to tease you about. Cracking the so-called ice queen was a feat to be celebrated, apparently. Whatever. He was yours and you were his so you didn’t quite care about the technicalities of it. Even if the story went a bit differently, in your opinion.
Tumblr media
The brutal snow and temperatures of February were beginning to fade into spring when you met Jungkook.
You and Jimin had been attempting to finish your economics homework together in your favorite coffee shop; a hidden treasure that was a ten minute walk from campus and ticked all your aesthetic boxes. You two were sipping from your respective hot drinks, neglecting your heaps of bookwork in favor of discussing the new season of Stranger Things. Jimin was deep into his theory of Hopper still being alive when his eyes flickered to the door at the sound of the bell, widening slightly in recognition before a bright smile took over his face.
"Jungkook!" Jimin called, waving whoever it was over.
You followed his gaze and turned your head in the direction of the entrance, growing curious when the boy walking towards your table wasn't familiar to you. It took you less than five seconds to realize that the boy in question was attractive.
Like, extremely attractive. The kind of attractive that should not be subjected to the way you look right now.
It took you even less time to whip your head back around, glaring at Jimin with wide eyes and a panicked expression.
He met your glare with a confused scrunch of his eyebrows before it slowly transformed into a smirk, quickly catching on to what your pointed look was for. The night before had been a late one. You, like any other normal millennial, had impulse bought a pretty yellow Nintendo Switch solely for the new Animal Crossing game. As soon as it arrived on your doorstep you were retreating into your room, tearing the package open with squeals of excitement.
Maybe you completely lost track of time and played until your eyes were bloodshot and you heard birds chirping outside. Maybe you got an astounding two hours of sleep. And maybe you had fallen asleep without setting an alarm and woke up thirty minutes later than usual.
The details were insignificant though, because you were throwing on a pair of leggings and the first sweatshirt you saw, brushing your hair and your teeth, and hastily sprinting to your car all in record time.
No sleep. No makeup. No breakfast. And worst of all, no coffee.
And so, it was blatantly clear you had no desire to let a boy that beautiful even glance at you in that state, let alone introduce himself. But it didn't look like you had a choice in the matter, because moments later he was towering over your table with a stupidly handsome smile.
Jungkook grinned, reaching out to do that Weird Bro Handshake with Jimin. "Hey, Chim."
You were already plotting various methods of painful revenge in your head.
"Hey, Kook. What are you doing here?"
"I kind of work here," He chuckled. "Well, as of like, yesterday. Today's my first day."
"Oh, so this is the new job you were telling me about," Jimin nodded in realization, then his eyes flickered mischievously to yours. You’re rapidly shaking your head. "You know, this is my friend ___'s favorite coffee spot."
A scowl immediately takes over your face, only to be wiped off and replaced by a sickeningly sweet smile when Jungkook turns his head to look your way. The instant your eyes meet his you quite literally want to melt into the floor.
Jungkook smiles at you. Like, really smiles. "Hey, that's cool. We'll probably be seeing a lot of each other then, right?"
Across the table, Jimin snorts, which only adds to the way your cheeks are absolutely flaming. You send a harsh kick to Jimin's leg as inconspicuously as you can, all while batting your eyelashes at Jungkook.
"Uh, yeah! We probably... will."
Jungkook looks positively amused, but if he notices Jimin rushing to clutch his leg, he doesn't say anything.
"Sweet," He grins again. There's a brief few seconds where you two are just gazing at each other, stupid and shy, until Jimin loudly clears his throat. "Right, well, I should probably go clock in. Let's chill sometime this week, Chim."
"Sure thing." Jimin sings, smugness plastered all over his face.
Jungkook waves, already backing away from the table with his eyes on you. "Nice meeting you."
You feel yourself flush again and you absolutely hate it. "Nice meeting you too."
With a final smile, Jungkook disappears behind the employee doors. The moment he leaves your eyes are screwed shut and you're slamming your head against the table. The silence speaks for itself. You don't even need to see Jimin's face to know that he's either smirking or stifling his laughter.
"Don't." You warn.
"You just blushed," He says anyway. "Like, four times."
"I most definitely did not blush."
"You did. You still are."
"I'm embarrassed!" You wail. "That's literally the only reason why. I look like I got ran over and dragged for three blocks."
"Jungkook sure doesn't seem to think so," Jimin hums, snickering as he sips his coffee.
"Stop."
"He likes you." He insists.
"He was just being polite." You defend.
"That is literally my childhood best friend. I think I would know."
This makes you pause. Then you sigh. "He doesn't even know me."
He doesn’t disagree. But then again, "Not yet."
"Stop trying to play matchmaker, Jimin. He said five words to me," You spoke firmly, exasperated as you downed the final sip of your latte. "Plus, I'm just focusing on me and my degree right now. No distractions."
Jimin knew that you were already worn out, and even though he was mostly joking around, he wouldn’t want to push you any further. He’d drop it.
"Fine. We'll see who's right in the end, though."
For now.
"I will dump that hot coffee over your head."
As it turns out, Jimin was kind of right.
It takes a grand total of four visits to your favorite coffee shop before Jungkook asks you out. The first time you were by yourself, nose buried in a book as Jungkook was clocking in. He wasn't able to speak to you until about an hour later, when the morning rush had passed and you had finally lifted your head from whatever was in that book.
You were honestly dreading facing him again, but you were prepared and actually presentable this time. Also you were kind of starving. And so, you hesitantly approached the counter. Jungkook took your order, both of you all fidgeting hands and sheepish smiles. You mentally patted yourself on the back when you spoke without any real mess-ups, and prayed that the cool girl aura you always tried so desperately to maintain was being transmitted.
Not like you were trying to leave a lasting impression, or anything.
He hand delivered you your coffee and muffin with a beaming grin, all while his new boss glared at him from behind the counter. He didn't have to know that you knew cashiers weren't supposed to serve the food.
The second visit was a few days after. You were with Jimin again, shooting down every jab he made about you only wearing a pretty dress because you knew you would be coming here. Jungkook joined you both during his break. As soon as he untied his apron and sat himself directly across from you, it struck. You knew you were screwed. You just couldn't stop staring at him. The chin in the palm of your hands and sparkles in your eyes type of staring. You would be much more ashamed if you couldn’t see the way he was staring right back. Jimin found this hilarious, of course, and would subtly find ways to connect you two in conversation. You weren't sure if you loved or hated him for it.
It was that visit that Jungkook insisted on sharing his slice of strawberry cake with you, claiming he wasn't that hungry. The both of you were embarrassed, whacking his arm and dismissing him as Jimin complained about being the third wheel. By the end of his break, Jungkook was positively smitten, you were begrudgingly infatuated, and Jimin was awfully smug. He reluctantly said bye to you both, and you were slouching forward with your head in your hands the moment he disappeared from visibility.
Jimin looked extremely pleased. "Believe me now?"
"Focusing on school," You protested. It was a weak one, but. Well.
"Are you trying to convince me or yourself?" He mused.
And suddenly, you were frantic. Panicking. This was definitely not a part of the plan.
Quickly packing up your things, you groaned loudly. "You. Maybe me. Or both. I can't think in this place anymore."
"You'll be all over each other by next week."
"Shh!" You were childishly covering your ears and speed-walking out of the café.
Try as you might, you couldn't help yourself and returned the very next day after all your classes had finished. Jungkook was already there when you walked in, taking a customer's order but doing a double take and flashing you a smile when you appeared in his line of sight. This visit consisted of nothing but pretending.
Pretending to be studying. Pretending you weren't listening to him take orders just to hear his voice. Pretending you weren't sneaking glances at him. Pretending that the way your eyes kept meeting wasn't making your skin prickle. And you were just fine pretending, until suddenly he was in the seat across from with you his apron off and a steaming hot chocolate in hand. You tried your hardest to remain indifferent, you really did. But then he was pushing the beverage towards you with gentle eyes and his smile hopeful, telling you it was his treat because he noticed how hard you were studying. And then you were melting right along with the marshmallows in that mug.
The two of you talked about your majors, your families, your favorite shows, even Jimin. You asked about his tattoos and he explained them with ease. You also may have pulled out one of the oldest tricks in the book at the sight of his knuckle tattoos, gasping in feigned wonder when you pulled his hand against yours to measure the size difference.
His hand could swallow yours whole and still have some leftover, you discovered. It was a very rewarding experiment.
You made each other laugh and blush down to the very last second of his break. Scarily enough, being in each other's presence was so annoyingly addictive that you found yourself hesitant to watch him leave. You could tell Jungkook felt the same by the way he dragged out his goodbyes. I work again on Thursday, maybe I'll see you then? Your fingers brushed as he softly took the mug from you. It was really fun talking to you. You were biting your lip to keep from smiling embarrassingly big. You look really pretty today, by the way. And then he was off.
You made a strangled noise the second you were outside with your fingers frantically beginning to type a message to Jimin.
promise not to say i told you so :///
Jungkook asked you out on your fourth visit. As soon as you approached the counter, he just blurted it out. As if it was something he couldn't hold on his tongue any longer. You couldn't hear yourself say yes over your brain malfunctioning and the powerful thumping of your heart, but you knew you did. His heartbreakingly gorgeous grin told you so.
On his break, Jungkook brought you a latte with a heart carved in the cream. You just couldn't conceal the coo that escaped you, which quickly resulted in his cheeks reddening.
Cute, you thought.
He quizzed you on your personality and the type of activities you liked to do, admitting that he would use the information to conjure up the best date you would ever go on. Six days later, Jungkook stayed true to his word. Not only was it the best date you had ever been on, but you were completely certain it would ruin any other dates for you moving forward, unless they were with him. Much to your annoyance and also utter delight, you were so sure of Jeon Jungkook and your brief but striking time together that you kissed him. Right on the swings of your favorite childhood playground, first date rules tossed aside.
He was so caught off guard that his eyes expanded to twice their normal size and your teeth banged together. You drew back, slightly mortified and ready to jump to your death from the tallest slide on the playground, but Jungkook was huffing a laugh onto your lips and grabbing your face like it was nothing. Then you two got it just right, and something clicked. The earth fell off its axis and you were rendered breathless and all that nauseating cliché shit you chastised as a myth. And from that day forward, you two were completely, tooth-rottingly, inseparable.
Tumblr media
"Easy," Jungkook proclaimed, pecking your lips. "We finished the tree."
He set you back on the floor gently, releasing a dramatic breath of air as if lifting you to place the star on top of the tree had actually winded him. As if he wasn't a muscle pig. You rolled your eyes and told him as much.
"Don't be a baby, muscle pig," You shoved at his bicep, only proving your point further when he didn't move an inch. ‘And I finished the tree.”
Instead, he caught the hand that you nudged him with and pulled your back to his chest, caging you between his arms. "Muscle pig, huh? That's what you think of me, baby?"
You flushed at the teasing lilt in his voice, suddenly very eager to escape his hold. But try as you might, he just wouldn't budge. A loud laugh left your throat as you flailed in his grasp, his muscled arms bulging in the turtleneck you bought him for his birthday a few months ago. Suddenly, you decided that you would be returning it for your own personal peace.
A high pitched whine left your mouth, one that lost all its seriousness once it was drowned out by your giggles. "Jungkook, let go of me!"
You would just not stop wiggling, and Jungkook could not stop laughing. He could live the rest of his life like this, his brain pauses to think. He's so happy.
And when you're thrashing so violently that your heel kicks his pocket with a force that has an object clattering onto the floor, Jungkook has never reacted faster in his life. Instantly your imprisonment is gone, and Jungkook is on your floor in a flash. Your eyebrows draw together at the sight of him scrambling for whatever it is, and all you're able to see is a sleek black case before he's quickly stuffing it back in his pocket.
You're eyeing him when he rises back on his feet. "Feel like sharing?"
Jungkook whistles noncommittally. "Not particularly, no."
There's a drawn-out beat of silence where you're just gazing at each other, neither one of you backing down. And then you're crossing your arms, and he's looking at your nose and your forehead and anywhere but your eyes, and then you're arching an eyebrow. He looks at you and breaks. Defeat.
"It's your present," He lets out a heavy sigh. "Well, the main one anyway."
You positively squeal. "Ooh! Can I see? Please?"
"Baby, it's the 20th."
"Can I have a hint?"
Jungkook blinks. "No, you cannot have a hint."
You're instantly pouting, but Jungkook expects that, because he knows you better than anyone else. Which is why he knows that you're a little spoiled, with a bit of a bratty streak, with just a dash of calculated charm that you use to your advantage to get just about anything you want. He's never seen it as a bad thing. In fact, he finds it cute. A little hot, too, if he's being truthful.
Anyway, he came prepared. Just as you're opening your mouth to no doubt make him spill the surprise, he's hushing you with a bruising kiss to your lips. The kind of kiss that makes you go pliant against him, the kind that makes you make a little noise in the back of your throat. The kind you've been waiting for all night.
It’s the trick that never truly runs its course.
And Jungkook is melting, too. Melting, turning to mush at your very feet, until you're moving backwards and clutching at his shoulders, ready to push him onto the couch.
"Mmm," He's humming against you, before he reluctantly draws back. He lets you chase his lips once, twice, before he chuckles lowly. "Hold on, angel."
You're suddenly feeling warm all over after his kisses, wanting nothing more than to cuddle into him into the couch and feel him next to you. Or maybe above you. With that chain you always tugged on dangling in your face. You really weren't picky.
You watched Jungkook break away from you and rummage through his bag with a frown and a newfound heat at the pit of your belly. "It can't wait?"
Like he said, he knows you, which means he knew kisses alone wouldn’t be able to satiate you nor get you to stop asking questions for the entire week. No matter how mind-numbing they may be.
"One second," He promised, and you definitely counted at least five, but he quickly found what he was looking for all the same. "I brought a surprise. Well, two surprises."
He was holding both of his hands behind his back with this stupid grin on his face. You squinted for a few seconds, suspicious, before breathing out a laugh. "Are you ever gonna show me?"
Jungkook looked way too happy with himself.
"The most important surprise is mistletoe, obviously. Gonna have to find a way to glue it on to the ceiling above your bed." And there was that mischievous little smile that told you he had every intention of carrying that out.
You folded your arms over your body and scoffed. Even if you were trying and failing to keep your lips from quirking up and possibly, maybe finding it a little harder to breathe all of a sudden. "You're unbelievable, Jeon."
He just winked and held up his other hand, pulling a gasp from your lips the second you realized what it was.
"The Polar Express!"
"I had to check like, four different stores in the mall to find it. That's why I got here a little late, by the way. But I thought we could make some hot chocolate like in the movie and watch it together and," Jungkook pauses to think, licking his lips. "There's a 'ride my train' joke in here somewhere but I don't know how to say it."
He's snorting at his own delivery before you are, and once your giggles permeate the air he's invading your space again with a lovesick smile.
"You are the sweetest boy," You praise, holding his pretty face with both hands and peppering small kisses all over it the way he secretly likes. "But you make me sick to my stomach sometimes."
If anything, this makes him smile even wider. "I love you too, baby."
Tumblr media
You and Jungkook are in complete darkness besides the light coming from the TV in your room playing Polar Express. His head is on your shoulder with his arm strewn across your waist, and his entire leg slotted between yours. He's soft. He smells like the lavender body soap you keep in your shower. His gentle breaths hit your neck every time he exhales and you're now cliché enough to believe that the heart underneath you beats in tandem with yours.
Both of your stomachs are filled from the takeout he ordered for dinner and the peppermint hot chocolate you made while he was in the shower. You're still mentally replaying the moment he stepped back in your room, towel wrapped around his waist with droplets of water cascading down his body. His prominent abs and tattoos and wet hair had you scrambling to sit up, clearing your throat as you tasked yourself with handing him his mug. If he noticed you ogling him, he surely didn’t react to it.
Made us some cocoa, you said.
He brought the beverage to his nose and sniffed once, twice, before his entire face bunched up. Peppermint is nasty. Then he was gulping it down.
I thought it was nasty, you laughed in disbelief.
Nothing you make me can be nasty. Thank you, baby.
And now you’re thoroughly warm from the tips of your fingertips down to your toes, and you figure it has less to do with the cocoa and more with the way Jungkook so obviously loves you. The way you love him.
Feeling a tugging at your shirt, you look down to see him peering up at you with a dazed twinkle in his eye. "You're not hot in this?"
You purse your lips and pause, knowing what was coming. "No. Are you?"
He has the decency to look a little clueless. He was always doing that, in a playfully childish way you grew to love.
"Actually, yeah I am," Jungkook furrows his brows, like it was something he was just now realizing. And then he's sitting up and pulling his shirt over his head, and you're instantly staring at his back and remembering the way it feels to rake your fingers up and down it, and he's turning back to you with a lazy smirk. "You don't wanna take yours off, angel?"
You swallow. "I'm okay."
Jungkook starts to laugh, that cocky laugh that is equal parts douchebag-ish and sexy. He's most definitely turning you on and he most definitely knows this, which is why you're glaring at him until he reaches over you and picks up the mistletoe from your bedside desk. He dangles it over your heads, makes sure to wriggle his eyebrows suggestively when he does it, and you want to laugh, you really do. You would probably roll your eyes and call him a nerd too while you were at it, if it weren't for the way he was changing his position and starting to lean over you. Crowding your space in your favorite way.
Jungkook hears your breathing pick up once you're directly under him, watches the way your lips part and your eyes change for him, and decides to go for the kill.
Nothing about the kiss was soft or gentle. Jungkook clearly had a point to prove and knew how he wanted to do it. The dangling mistletoe was soon forgotten in favor of holding your face by your chin, landing with a chime on your wooden floors. He worked your mouth open in that sloppy, messy, dirty way he only exhibited when he was feeling particularly desperate. Saliva pooled at the corners of your mouth and you were trembling underneath him, clutching at the warm skin of his back. It was nasty, absolutely obscene the way his tongue was in your mouth like his life depended on it. And you loved it. You couldn't stop making these little sounds, and Jungkook was groaning into your mouth right along with you. You were seconds away from pleading for him to do anything he wanted, to make you his, when he's abruptly pulling from you with a wet pop and a string of saliva between you.
Your ragged breaths fill the air, both of your chests heaving as you take a second to attempt to drag yourself out of the haze he's built around you two.
The asshole has the audacity to laugh. "Hot yet?"
"You don't have to bring out the mistletoe to kiss me, you know." You eventually say instead.
"I know," He pants, still smiling like the all-consuming beauty he is. "But you love Christmas. And it's our first. Wanna do it right."
You feel the need to close your eyes, let his words sink in, and so you do. You let the statement blanket over you until you're positively beaming, and when you open your eyes, he is the same. You are so irreversibly in love and you think he might be perfect. You tell him as much.
"You're perfect," You say, all soft and starry eyed. You're nodding when he starts shaking his head, and when the tips of his ears begin to turn red and he's putting his head down, you're giggling and putting both hands on either side of his head to get his eyes back on yours. "I love you a lot."
Jungkook is so happy. "Love you most."
And then he's leaning down again. This kiss is much less frantic, more steady, but still passionate and still with Jungkook, which means it fills your body with heat all the same. Your head is floating and you're squirming under his hold again when you break apart for air.
There's no point in trying to resist him anymore. You never can.
"I'm gonna take my sweater off now."
Jungkook scrunches his nose, and grins. "Okay."
summertime mindset - pt. 7
picnics & parties
masterlist for summertime mindset
Timing is hard to get right and summer doesn’t last forever. You and Tyson learn the hard way.
word count: 3.3k
note from the writer: sorry I forgot to post yesterday, hopefully this makes up for it!!
SUMMER
Tyson had the brilliant idea that while you were at the lake house, he wanted to take you out for a romantic ride in a rowboat. You had agreed and decided that you would go while Michael and Rachel headed to the store for a few last-minute items.
“Do you know what you’re doing?” You giggled, watching from the dock as he tried to steady the boat. Moments before, you had helped him carry it into the water from where it had been stored on the lawn. You hadn’t even left shore, and he was already acting as if he was going to tip over. He shot you a look, a way-too dramatic look of offense at your comment that led you to double over with giggles.
“Of course, I know what I’m doing, it’s just
 maybe leave the phones in the house in case we tip.” He confessed as he finally got the hang of what he was doing. Right before you were about to climb into the boat, Tyson’s face lit up as if he just remembered something. “Almost forgot, I’ll be right back.” He started to jog back up the house but stopped after a few steps and turned on his heel walk back up to you. He gave you a quick kiss, as if he couldn’t help himself, before flashing a grin and continuing back onto his previous path to the house.
You watched as he went, unable to fight the smile that was growing on your face. Tyson was incredibly sweet, and so affectionate, you had never felt more appreciated in your life than you did with him. It was a little nerve wracking, how everything seemed to just fall into place with him, but then he was bouncing out of the house and back towards you on the dock with a picnic basket in his hand and suddenly none of that was of any importance to you.
“You didn’t.” You tried, because of course he did. He was grinning like he usually was, looking incredibly proud of himself—granted, he had a right to be—and you briefly wondered when he had left your side long enough to put the basket together.
He set the basket in the center of the boat before helping you climb in. You watched as he tried to steady himself, giggling as he dramatically pumped his fist when he managed to settle into his seat without too much rocking.
Tyson rowed out for a while, joking and keeping you laughing the whole way out. You were curious what was in the basket, and once he deemed you far enough out on the water, he pulled it towards him.
“I made lunch, but I’m not a chef and I had to pack this quick while you were in the shower, so I hope you’re in the mood for PB&Js.” He joked while digging through the basket to pull out two baggies filled with the sandwiches.
“It’s perfect.” You promised, readily taking the one he was offering you. He rocked the boat as if he was going to tip it, and you playfully glared at him, but for the more part you ate in relative silence. As you took a sip out of one of the water bottles he brought, Tyson grinned at you before pulling one more thing out of the picnic basket.
His ukulele.
“Dinner and a show? What did I do to deserve this?”  You teased, earning an eye roll from Tyson.
“Might be a punishment, depending how you look at it.” He joked as he strummed aimlessly. You shook your head at him, cheeks sore from smiling so hard. It was a little mind blowing, how easy it felt to be around Tyson. Even when he was playing the ukulele and singing off key to a song you were pretty sure he was making up on the spot, he was the only person you wanted to be with. He finished the first song, and you dissolved into giggles as he wiggled his brows at you. “So, was it a punishment or not?”
“Definitely not a punishment.” You smiled softly, feeling your heart grow two sizes at the sight of Tyson’s blush at your compliment. “Not to be cheesy but spending time with you is never a punishment.”
“That is cheesy.” He chuckled, though he flushed harder and you couldn’t help but laugh at him. You shook your head at him, the smile seemingly permanent on both your faces as you studied each other. You watched as the look in his eye turned from teasing to a softer, more adoring one as the moments ticked by and neither one of you said anything.
“What’re you thinking about, Tys?” You asked quietly. You hoped the answer was you, because just the idea that he was smiling so genuinely as a result of you made your heart race and butterflies flutter in your stomach.
“I’m thinking that I’m the luckiest guy in the world.” Tyson started, a dreaminess to his voice that had you swooning. Before you could prompt him about why he thought that, he continued. “You’re spending your summer with me. So, I’m feeling pretty lucky.”
For a moment you just smiled at him, wanting to launch yourself into his arms but not willing to risk tipping the boat. But then you thought, fuck it, and stood up with your arms braced on either side of the boat to lean forward just enough to give him a kiss. He cupped your jaw, holding you in place against his lips for an extra moment longer. When you settled back into your seat, you were still grinning at each other and you couldn’t help but chuckle at him.
“And I’m the cheesy one.”
PRESENT
“I can’t believe you didn’t listen to me.”
You know you’re in for a fight when those are Jon’s first words as he brushes past you and into your apartment. Granted, most of what you had been doing with Jon over the past couple weeks was fighting, so you weren’t that surprised. The relationship was dying—dead, past tense—but you hadn’t gotten yourself to pull it together enough to end everything.
“What are you talking about?” You sighed, sounding defeated before the argument even started. Jon headed into the kitchen like he lived there, and if you hadn’t been so focused on trying to find out what he meant you would have rolled your eyes at him.
“You hung out with Tyson yesterday.” He spoke as if you had just committed the highest act of treason and not gotten lunch with a group of friends and posted a picture of it on your Snapchat story. You scoffed, arms crossed and already on the defensive.
“And what about it? We’re friends, Jonathan.” You hissed, making sure that you stayed on the opposite side of the kitchen as him. You couldn’t stand to be in the same room as him, but you also couldn’t stand for letting him think that you were a cheater. It was a lose-lose situation for you, that much was clear.
“You guys used to fuck! How do I know you’re not doing it again behind my back?” Jon accused you, and you flinched at the tone of his voice.
“Maybe because JT was there? And one of the other guys is there too whenever we hang out? And maybe you could have some trust in me?” You snapped. This had been building for a while, and though you knew he was jealous of Tyson, Jon had managed to somewhat keep it to himself. Now, it was out in the open and his accusations had you seething.
“You lied to me about your past with Tyson and you lied about not seeing him anymore!” He countered, completely ignoring you and only serving to rile you up more.
“First of all, I know I should have mentioned my past relationship with Tyson, and I’m sorry. But it was years ago. And I never said I would stop seeing him.” You shot back. For a moment, it was quiet, save for the labored breathing as a result of pent up anger and resentment. The silence allowed you to comprehend just what this argument and accusations meant for the fate of your relationship. “If you can’t trust me to be friends with Tyson, then leave.”
“Maybe I will.” He threatened, leaning backwards against the counter with his arms crossed. Clearly, he thought he was going to get his way, and you briefly wondered why he assumed that you would pick him over your friends and happiness when he had caused you nothing but pain and strife for the last few months.
“Get out.” You demanded, voice more firm and more set in a decision that you had ever been. Jon had the audacity to look shocked, and you raised a brow, silently daring him to try and protest. “We’re done.”
“But—”
“No.” You interrupted, extending a finger to point to the door in a not-so subtle gesture for him to leave your apartment. He floundered, mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, but for once he kept quiet and listened to you. He slammed your door shut behind him, the sound both making you flinch and sealing the fate for your failed relationship.
You took a moment to regain your thoughts, and suddenly your apartment felt entirely too empty. Your roommate—no matter how much you didn’t get along—wasn’t around to distract you, having gone back to her hometown for the week. Though there wasn’t much love left in your relationship with Jon, you had still been with him for a substantial amount of time, and breakups hurt no matter what.
You wondered if it was fate, the mischievous force, that had your phone ringing only five minutes after Jon left. You glanced at the caller I.D. and your heart skipped a beat in your chest without your permission as you saw the familiar head of brown curls that popped up with the contact photo.
“Hello?” You questioned softly. Even to your own ears, your voice sounded strained. Internally, you cringed, not liking how you were so blatantly affected. You bit your lip, hoping he wouldn’t notice the change in your demeanor.
“Hey—wait, what’s wrong?” Tyson cut his own greeting short, picking up on your distress. In the background, you could hear people chatting loudly, and you remembered that Andre had decided to throw a house party. You had been invited, but declined the offer in order to get work done—though, it was highly unlikely that would be happening anytime soon. The noise faded, Tyson must have stepped outside, and when you didn’t answer his question after a moment, he called your name.
“Sorry, it’s—” You started, squeezing your eyes shut and breathing deeply to try and gather your thoughts. Tyson waited patiently, and you pushed away the thought that you could clearly picture his concerned face. His brows would be scrunched together in confusion as he tried to figure out what was wrong, and his lips would be in a miniscule pout that was simultaneously endearing and adorable. “It’s just Jon.”
“What happened? Did he do something?” Tyson rushed. He sounded annoyed, which you understood. Jon had done nothing but make passive aggressive comments to him whenever they were in the same room, and that was only if he even acknowledged his presence.
“No, not exactly.” You shook your head, even though you knew Tyson couldn’t see you. You didn’t want to tell him what had truly happened, not wanting to bring up the fact that he was the catalyst for the fight. “I broke up with him.”
“Oh.” He sounded relieved almost, but before you could question his reaction, he continued. “Do you want me to come over?”
“I think I want to go out, actually. You’re at Andre’s, right?” You sighed standing up from your couch and heading into your room to change into something a little more appropriate for a house party.
“Yeah. I’ll you soon, okay?” Tyson assured you, and you hummed in acknowledgment before bidding him goodbye. Your chest felt a lot lighter from just a simple phone call with him, and you wanted to curse yourself for the way he still had such an effect over you.
It was a little over twenty minutes later that you let yourself into Andre’s apartment, the building much more expensive than anything you could ever hope to afford. The place was packed from wall to wall with people bustling from one part of the party to the next. Sending a text to Tyson to let him know that you had arrived, you spotted Mikko heading into the kitchen. In desperate need for a familiar face and a strong drink, you followed after the tall blond.
“Hey, Rantanen.” You called, sliding in beside him as he poured a drink at the counter. He cheered loudly when he realized that it was you beside him, and not one of the dozens of girls that usually hung off his arm at parties.
“What are you doing here? I thought you weren’t coming?” He questioned loudly, pulling you in for a quick side hug. He was well on his way to being drunk, and with the way the team had been playing lately, you figure he deserved it.
“Change of plans.” You shrugged, plastering a strained smile on your face. You didn’t want to air your dirty laundry out to a whole crowd of people, and while you were good friends with nearly the entire Avalanche roster by this point, Mikko didn’t know you well enough to see that you were hiding something.
“Tyson’s going to be so excited to see you.” He grinned broadly, leaning against the counter as you poured your own drink. Your heart skipped a beat, but you didn’t have the time to analyze what Mikko’s words could have meant exactly. Luckily, you didn’t have to come up with a response, because an all-too familiar body made an appearance beside you.
“That, I am.” Tyson smiled, his arm finding its way around your middle and sitting comfortably on your side. His touch was both calming and setting you on fire, you hated that you didn’t mind the way he made you feel. “Mind if I steal her away?”
“Go ahead, buddy.” Mikko responded with mischief in his eyes, like he knew something you didn’t. His look only turned more devious when Tyson slipped his hand into yours in order to tug you gently in the direction of the kitchen’s exit. You smiled at the blond as a parting, nerves and stress consuming you and stopping from forming any actual words. Tyson was leading you through the party, using his large frame to create a path that you followed. You saw JT and Cale, chatting amongst themselves across the room, and when you waved at them, they gave you the same mischievous and knowing look as Mikko.
Tyson opened the balcony door and the cold Denver air made you shiver and shuffle closer to the brunette that had led you outside. The noise of the party quieted down once the door was shut, and you turned to Tyson, who was already looking to you with concern. His brows were furrowed and his lips in a slight pout—you hated that you still knew him as well as you did.
“Are you okay?” He settled on asking when it became clear that you certainly weren’t going to speak up first. You sighed quietly, stepping towards the railing and looking out to the skyline. You felt his gaze on the side of your face, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable feeling to be seen by him.
“Honestly? I’m better than I should be. This was inevitable, really.” You explained. Part of you felt guilty for not being as heartbroken as you should have been, but the other part of you knew Jon wasn’t great, and he certainly wasn’t good for you.
“How so?” His question was asked quietly, and you pondered on how to answer without giving away how you truly felt, something you were still figuring out yourself.
He wasn’t you. You thought, but decided it was better to keep that to yourself. Silently, you cursed Tyson for letting communication die out between you and him, but it wasn’t fair to put all the blame on him. You had done your fair share of not responding to messages as it grew further and further from the summer months.
What you wouldn’t give to go back.
“I just wasn’t happy, you know?” You settled on saying with a shrug, and Tyson nodded once. You turned to face him, finding him already watching you with a nearly unreadable look on his face.
“I’m so sorry for how things ended between us, after that summer.” It was as if he was reading your mind, and you couldn’t get yourself to say anything. You wanted to tell him it wasn’t completely his fault, but instead you shook your head dumbfoundedly. His stare was pinning you to the ground, so many emotions swirling around in his eyes. “I missed you. Still do.”
“I’m right here?” You whispered, confusion lacing your words. He simply shook his head, taking a step closer to you. Your breath hitched in your throat as he reached a hand up and softly cupped your cheek, making sure your gaze stayed on him. Not that you could tear your gaze from him even if you wanted to.
“Not like that. I’ve missed the old you. The old us.” The implication of his words hit you hard and fast, and suddenly your heart was racing as you melted into his touch. Your own hands reached out to grip the fabric of his shirt to try and ground yourself, but it was too late. Your head was in the clouds and your proximity to Tyson was keeping you there.
“I’m right here.” You said quietly and with more certainty. It happened slowly, how you were pulling yourself closer to Tyson and he was leaning down towards you. Your heart was hammering in your chest as your eyes fluttered shut. He grew near, and you tilted your head up meet him and—
“I thought you weren’t coming!”
Andre bursted through the door and out onto the patio. You jumped away from Tyson, cheeks heating up profusely at the idea of being caught in such a compromising position. The Swede winced, looking between you and Tyson, slowly piecing together that he had interrupted something with his inebriated outburst. “Oh, were you—”
“I didn’t see you when I got here, what have you been up to?” You ask hurriedly, interrupting whatever he planned on finishing his sentence with. You weren’t even sure what had nearly happened. Andre’s face lit up at your question, his original excitement at seeing you at the party returning.
“I’ve been playing pong. Want to be my partner?” He asked with a wide grin and you nodded.
You bit your lip, knowing there were things that needed to be said between you and Tyson. Both of you stayed silent a moment longer, and you knew you needed to go catch up with Andre. It was like a ghost of your past self took over, and you pushed yourself onto your tip-toes and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. When you pulled back, Tyson’s eyes were wide and a blush was creeping up his beck, but you didn’t give him time to react before you were slipping back inside the party. Your mind was both blank and racing at the same time, but one thing was for certain.
The not-quite kiss felt a little too right for your liking.
That Damned Gazebo
Frostiron Holiday Wishes Challenge ❆ 🎅🎄 Prompt by @snarkyship Fic written by @worstloki Note: AH! So sorry this is a late post, tumblr messed up and I didn’t receive this on Xmas day! Ah! Thank you @worstloki for resending! TwT <3333
Wish (Prompt/Idea): Human/no powers AU. Sort-of-enemies to friends to lovers.Tony rents this house/bungalow by the sea for the summer, with a kind of private beach where there is also a cute gazebo. Only that the gazebo is exactly halfway with the other property (by some mistake?). And the tenant of the neighbour bungalow is Loki, who's not so keen on sharing. So Loki&Tony will start a "war" to gain possession of the gazebo, doing their worst using the excuse of "this is my half, I can use it as I want". ((Optional: there is a table right in the middle, so at the beginning they sit at their own side glaring at each other, before starting deploying more convoluted tactics)).Mischief after mischief, they will start to know each other and of course everything will end with one of them inviting the other to their half for a romantic dinner and they'll end up sharing more than the gazebo <3((I hope it's enough clear and but also not too detailed??))
Stupid cute bungalow. Stupid cute gazebo. Stupid cute neighbour.
All Tony wanted was a vacation; a break from running a business and having to argue for his ideas to get accepted by the marketing teams and just some time to lay low and relax.
All Loki wanted was a break from being upstaged in his section of the family business by his brother; some time off to cool down and de-stress and lay low and relax.
But instead only half their regular favourite beach house was available no matter how much cash they offered to throw at the real estate company renting it out. Could they have picked a different place to stay? Maybe. But none of the other decent rentables this far west have a gazebo, and they would have nowhere to sit alone and admire the waves from afar if they took a place without one.
And, of course, that’s where it all started— that gazebo.
That damned gazebo.
———
Day 1
Tony Stark, genius, entrepreneur, philanthropist, makes his way unsteadily down the sandy-grassy slope from the bungalow to the beach, arms filled with an excessive amount of floating supplies, a personalized towel, sunglasses only half on, a fun-sized bottle of the finest sun lotion, a laptop because he may leave the stock market but the stock market may not leave him, a black Prada shirt over khaki Hawaiian shorts, a speaker for music, hot-rod red flip flops, a bag of snacks, a thin multipurpose blanket, and a polaroid.
He almost slips a few times on his way down, and he thinks he sees a crab and swears, but he does make it down to the brilliant white-sand beach of Malibu unharmed.
His plan is simple: spend the day in the shade of the wooden gazebo, sneak a peek at how his business is holding up, check his emails, play some Tetris, sunbathe around noon when the sun is highest, back under the shelter till the sun starts going down, into the water for some splashing, drying off as the sun sets, listen to some tunes while laying under the stars for a while.
Just a regular day off at his favourite beach.
He walks to the shaded gazebo area and draws the curtain to enter, and dumps the entire contents within his arms over the table in the center. He turns to open up the curtains on all sides but is interrupted by an ahem.
Tony turns, and, in the curtained darkness, makes out the figure of a person.
He must be the one who booked out the other half of the house, Tony thinks, eying the stranger sitting at the opposite end of the table with only a book and bottle of water. Show-off minimalists, Tony thinks, saltily.
“I would prefer if you didn’t open those,” he says, and Tony doesn’t recognize the accent, but there definitely is one. Maybe it’s a blend?
“But what’s the point of sitting under a gazebo on a beach if you can’t see the view?” Tony asks, pulling one open, letting in some light.
The man practically hisses at Tony for doing it, which, okay, weird, but that’s normal when you’re assaulted with bright light and have been sitting in the dark.
“How were you reading in the dark anyway? Don’t you know it’s bad for your eyes?”
“I assure you I was able to read just fine.”
“Yeah
 I’m opening the rest of these too
” Tony says, reaching for the curtain by the other side.
“Not if you wish to share this table, you won’t,” the man threatens.
“Are you
 trying to bribe me?” Tony asks, shocked, because who does this guy think he is?
“Compromise with,” the man has the gall to say. “And with table space, yes,” and Tony sputters. What can he even say to this. He’s here for a vacation, not to argue with strangers who are taking up half the gazebo space that should be his!
“Half,” Tony suggests, because he will not sit in the dark all day and miss out on his beach-view just so he gets to use the table. “You get half of this space, and I get the other half, and we can do whatever we want on our sides.”
The man sighs. “Fine. That sounds fair.”
The two of them spend the entire rest of the day sitting at opposite sides of the table pretending they’re not intentionally glaring and making crazy faces and trying to telepathically get rid of the other when they’re not looking.
Tony doesn’t comment on how the man barely gets any reading done and the man in turn doesn’t comment on how much equipment Tony brought down that he doesn’t use at any point in favour of using the laptop to retain his spot under the gazebo.
Schedule be damned, Tony is going to enjoy his vacation, and that means enjoying his duplex bungalow, even if someone else is renting half, and enjoying his gazebo that may be in-between the properties and they both may be paying for but is 100% actually his.
They wait each other out, and both head up to their houses at the same time; around midnight.
———
Day 2
Loki wakes at his usual time, showers, pointedly gets dressed into anything but the black shirt he has that matches what the man had on yesterday, and grabs his book before he heads down to the beach.
Having to share the same table was, simply put, incredibly awkward, but Loki has faith in it not happening again. He’s just going to make his way down to the gazebo and spend the day relaxing and rereading his favourite series without a pretentious-bearded neighbour showing up and making things weird.
“YOU!” Loki hears, and turns to find the same man from yesterday rushing down the slope towards him, “WHY ARE YOU UP AT THIS TIME?!”
Loki takes in the sight of the man dressed in a half-buttoned-up hawaiian shirt and pajama pants, with only a laptop and towel in hand, hair clearly fresh from bed, and, before he thinks better of it, counters eloquently with, “why are you half dressed?”
The man waves his arms in frustration, “I was tired! And in a rush! You don’t get to judge me, you’re the other f*ck who woke up this early!”
“I
 normally get up this early
” Loki informs him, backing away slowly.
He can’t believe he’s going to have to deal with this guy again.
At least his sweatshirt has a green hood so he can block the guy out of his sight, right? He won’t spend the entire day rereading paragraphs because the man at the other end of the table is making him feel anxious, right? Surely the man is bringing the towel to lay in the sand which means he won’t be needing the gazebo, right?
Loki literally booked this bungalow because it’s in Malibu, and no one pays for a place like this in Malibu when you can rent a lower quality place and spend the money on beach parties and drinks. The fact that it’s far enough from home to make him feel safer was a bonus, but he really just wanted to be alone for a few days.
Loki takes a seat, and crosses one leg over the other, getting comfy so he can lean the book on the table. He tries not to get annoyed that the curtains are still parted halfway. He wouldn’t mind if the ones on his side were open too, but at this point he’s not acquiescing a point to the stranger.
The man pulls the wooden chair out and sits down opposite him.
Of course he does.
Why wouldn’t he.
“So you’re really going to keep reading in the dark?” he says, flipping open his laptop.
“Yep, and that suits me just fine, thank you,” Loki answers neutrally.
“Does my no-light-reading-neighbour have a name?”
“Do you?”
“Tony.”
“Loki.”
“Nice to meet you, Loki,”
“Thank you.”
Loki uses his bookmark to flip to his page, and starts reading. He will not get distracted by this Tony. It’s totally normal to share this table. It’s not huge, but it’s built for at least six, so there’s space. Maybe not enough to lay on, but it’s enough distance to ignore the clicking of Tony’s keyboard as he frantically presses keys.
Loki is two hours into enjoying his reading time, and he thinks he was doing well.
He’d smiled every time Tony yawned because with eye-rubbing and deep sighs that man was not used to getting up early, but he’d actually gotten through nearly three chapters without incident.
Then, the infuriating man had plunked a speaker onto the table and started playing AC/DC.
Now he’s reread this one line at least fourteen times and still doesn’t know what the red-head was doing with Jon.
“Why?” Loki asks, “Why must you do this? You can see me reading, you’re blocking out the distant sound of waves hitting the shore, it’s not even at a decent volume, so, why?!”
“Sorry, what was that?” Tony answers, “Did you say something? Because I couldn’t hear you over the music, but it sounded like you had an issue with what I was doing on my side.”
“Your music is not staying on your side!” Loki argues, but only receives a shrug and an increase in volume.
He presses his lips together.
Fine. If you’re going to be petty about this, then I can too.
Under the table, Loki kicks Tony.
He hasn’t got shoes on, but he’s always had a knack for aiming very well, and Tony’s whimper (?) (it’s hard to tell with the music so loud) assures him he hit the shin bone well enough.
By the time Tony is done cradling his leg and looks up at Loki with a mix of anger/betrayal, Loki is already reading again, the perfect image of serenity.
Loki tries not to laugh as Tony discovers his legs are not long enough to kick back.
———
Day 3
Tony didn’t bother trying to wake up before Loki this time.
He went at his own pace, and remembered to change out of the pajamas, brushed his hair, had coffee, and took the time to make himself a few sandwiches to enjoy through the day.
Yesterday he even went for a quick swim around ten at night and headed straight back up to his side of the bungalow, because he’s a responsible adult who doesn’t need to out-do a stranger’s sleep-schedule. Or leg-length. Or laugh.
It isn’t a competition or anything.
By the time he makes it down to the beach, he finds Loki sitting under the gazebo, alone, with all the curtains tied open.
He’s also... wearing a black Prada shirt which matches the one Tony threw on this morning?? What?! Taking up half the space on his side of the table with 1 (one) bottle of water wasn’t enough, he also has to taunt him by wearing the exact same thing?!
He storms to his side of the gazebo and slams his palms down, taking satisfaction in the fact that Loki was startled and drops his book onto the table. Tony hopes he’s lost the page he was on.
“What do you think you’re doing?!”
“Hello, neighbour,” Loki greets, gingerly picking up his book again and giving a hesitant smile. “I didn’t realise you would be wearing the same shirt again, but I was hoping we could get off on a different foot today?”
Huh, well, would ya look at that, Tony thinks, I actually won. The sucker is gonna admit I’m too much and wave the white flag.
“That... actually sounds great,” Tony answers with his award-winning client-smile, sitting down opposite him. “This whole thing with splitting the table and curtains in half was a bit ridiculou—”
Tony yelps and stands up and starts frantically rubbing his hand over his butt which is stinging— he looks down at his seat and sees the culprit —a crab, menacing in all it’s crabby glory.
“Are you... okay?” Loki asks, far too confused, far too innocently, far too worried for it to be genuine, “what’s wrong?”
Tony, outraged, yells at Loki, “DID YOU FRICKIN PUT A CRAB IN MY SEAT?!”
“I— what?”
“WHO THE F*CK CALLS A PARLEY AND CRABS SOMEONE?!”
“No! I didn’t— are you okay??” Loki says, and he’s gotten up and rushing over and...okay, MAYBE he didn’t mastermind the crab.
“NO, I AM NOT, BUT THANK YOU FOR ASKING,” Tony screams, backing away from Loki, and running towards his bungalow.
Running in sand is hard, but Tony discovers it’s much harder when your butt is stinging.
———
Loki
 did not put a crab on Tony’s seat.
He’d honestly wanted to draw up a truce, maybe have an actual conversation with Tony, and he even brought a towel and wore a change of clothes underneath in the event that the man wanted to go for a swim and wouldn’t mind if Loki joined.
He’d even brought snacks to share.
But now he feels bad.
Had kicking him under the table every time Tony had put the volume too loud or managed to slide low enough to kick him back or played We're Taking the Hobbits to Isengard been bad? Had it been too much? Why else would Tony assume he’d actually try and hurt him?
The glare-offs had just been fun, faces when they thought the other couldn’t see wasn’t bad-intentioned, the kicking hadn’t meant to injure. Loki had thought they were getting along. Perhaps he had misunderstood? Perhaps the other had not felt they were fun little pranks?
He owes Tony an apology.
———
Tony has been icing his butt for an hour. If he had any duct tape, he would’ve duct taped the peas to his butt.
Tony is thinking about how if he had any duct tape he would’ve duct taped the peas to his butt by now when someone bangs at his door.
Gee, I wonder who it could be, Tony thinks, as he goes to answer the door. Just so many people who visit this private beach residence. In all honesty it’s kind of sweet that Loki would turn up to check on him at all really.
Tony leaves the pea packet on the nearest counter and goes to answer the door. Good thing about this bungalow: it has many spare counters for things like dumping peas. An excessive amount of counters, even, and he questions what the designer had been thinking.
Tony swings the door open, “Hey there, crab-man.”
“I’m sorry,” Loki blurts.
“Hey, it’s okay, it doesn’t even hurt that much anymore, but at least you’re owning to it.”
“I didn’t set that up! I wouldn’t actually try to cause any lasting damage,” Loki explains.
Tony sighs.
“Yeah, I figured, I was just caught up in the moment and shouldn’t have blamed you.”
“Would’ve been a very Shakespearean betrayal too
” Loki muses.
“So
 anything else you came to say?” Tony asks. Although he’s not sure why.
“Would you be feeling up to sharing the table like normal people?”
“Oh, come on, where would be the fun in that?” Tony jokes.
“You
 weren’t hurt or offended when I kicked you or said your music taste is dumb?”
“Course not. We’ve all had wild college nights out, believe me, kick to the shins was nothing.”
“Crab grabs though
”
“If you want to share the table like normal people we will not be mentioning the crab grab.”
“Deal,” Loki says, and he’s beaming as if he’s won a prize. Which is really cute. Which is why Tony doesn’t regret slamming the door in his face.
Stupid cute neighbour.
He needs to change anyway.
———
Loki and Tony hang out under the gazebo, and they share the table.
Every so often Loki will read a line or two aloud and Tony will find himself snickering in response to Loki’s comments on the lines if not the lines themselves. Every now and then Tony tells Loki to look over at his screen as he invests in either the stock market or a round of Tetris.
Around noon Tony asks if Loki would like to sunbathe with him and Loki sees no reason not to join in. He doesn’t have any sunscreen of his own but Tony has plenty and is happy to share.
They talk about their work, and what they’re avoiding (family) in their little getaways from home, just things about life generally.
The sun is going to set soon when Loki asks if Tony would like to spend some time by the water with him.
The two of them spend a good thirty minutes hitting each other with floaties when they aren't sitting around in them, and, despite wading in till their knees, and flinging water at each other, they manage not to get too wet.
They sit in the sand watching the sun set in beautiful streaks of purples and orange as they dry off their feet.
Loki brought two towels in case of such a scenario (which Tony finds very endearing and sweet) and they lay on them as they watch the sky darken to reveal the stars. Loki tries to point out some constellations but Tony is convinced he’s making them up. Maybe he is.
The two of them share sandwiches and chips and chocolates and decide to head up early at around nine.
Tony invites Loki over for a movie, and how can Loki say no? He only just met him, but he’d rather be stuck sharing this bungalow and beach and gazebo with him than have to return home in a few days.
The house is huge, and there is plenty of room on the couch for them to be spaced out, but they choose to share a blanket and stay close because they want to.
Loki hadn’t planned on sleeping over, but he stays late and falls asleep in the middle of a movie and Tony doesn’t mind at all. It’s hard for him to mind when he’s also fallen asleep.
———
Day 4
Tony wakes early.
Not Loki-early, but earlier than usual, because he’s looking forward to spending time with Loki.
Hmm. Maybe it is technicallyyy still Loki-early. Whatever.
Except, Tony wakes up alone and walks down the slope to the gazebo, and finds it empty. A quick scan of the beach also yields no results. Which is concerning, but not overly so. Maybe he just has something else to do today?
Tony gets through a few hours by rotating through Tetris, League of Legends, and Galaga, before he gives in and walks up to Loki’s half of the duplex bungalow.
He bangs his fist on the door and waits.
About a minute later, Loki answers, in green-plaid pants and a vintagey AC/DC band shirt, hair looking only half brushed.
“Are you seriously wearing that kind of shirt as pajamas?”
“Yes. And good... morning?”
“Morning!” Tony cheerily greets in return, before his expression gets less so, “why aren’t you out today?”
“Good afternoon? I... just wasn’t feeling too well, a bad day I guess,” Loki explains, which Tony understands. “And I already over-lived my stay with you yesterday, so I thought you could have the gazebo all to yourself today, since I’m not really in a beach mood anyway.”
And that’s a big no in Tony’s book because no he didn’t go too far or over-stay anything and no he doesn’t owe him anything and no in general because Tony liked spending time with him! He’s fun and caring and Tony’s wondering where this guy was for every other vacation he spent here because Tony considers him a friend!
“That’s sweet,” Tony lies, “I’m not really in a beach mood either.”
“Ah. Would you
 like to come in?” Loki asks, hesitant.
“Of course buddy, if my friend wants to stay home I’m sticking with him.”
Loki stands aside, letting Tony into the bungalow that he’s used to owning on his own, but, shockingly enough, doesn’t mind sharing anymore.
“Would it be bad to ask what kind of bad mood?” Tony questions, taking a seat by the TV. It’s off and he doesn’t see a remote.
“A bit, yes, but I value the thought,” Loki answers, checking the kitchen cupboards.
“So what were you doing in here all alone without me, beach buddy?”
“Reading.”
Hmm. Tony considers. They did do what he had wanted yesterday.
“Can I join?” Tony inquires, “if you have any spare books, that is.”
“I didn’t know you could read.” Loki says with half-hearted disgust, walking behind the couch to a small bookshelf.
“Harry Potter, you got me,” Tony states in the driest tone, “Ha ha.”
“I’ve got the second Game of Thrones—“
“There’s a book?!”
“And the series hasn’t updated in years.”
“Bummer, hate when they do that, but at least the show ended?”
“Yeah, badly,” Loki points out. “I’ve got the Lord of the Rings trilogy.”
“I thought you didn’t like the hobbits being taken to Isengard,” Tony pouts.
“Not when it’s on loop and happening the sixth time in a row,” Loki says, dropping the book into Tony’s lap roughly.
Yeah, okay, the man isn’t feeling well, maybe he should leave? But Tony doesn’t want to leave him alone if he’s feeling bad either!
Tony opens the book, skipping through the contents and prologue-y pages. He will enjoy the book and he’ll do it while sitting on the opposite side of the couch because if Loki doesn’t want to lay across and tangle their legs under a blanket that’s up to him. Besides, that’s more an afternoon activity, and Tony isn’t tired at all, so he’s sitting up properly. Which contrasts with Loki’s slouchy leaning-into-the-couch.
“You know, if it’s too quiet, or the book doesn’t interest you, you can just watch something, I won’t be offended.”
“Not so fast, crab-man, I’m doing this to have fun and try something you enjoy, because I like spending time with you, and think that’s fair,” Tony states, and oh sh*t Loki looks devastated. Quick, something fun, something fun, “So I will definitely be trying to read it... at least a bit, before I do anything else
 because I may vehemently not-like reading, but I do enjoy your company.”
“Okay,” Loki verbosely replies.
Tony tries to figure out what he’s done wrong but Loki’s opened his book up already.
Tony manages to get through the book in about two hours. Which means he didn’t actually read through it, he just tried, and kept skipping to pages further along that looked more interesting. To be fair, there is a lot of exposition and world building that he knows doesn’t matter because it’s not in the movies.
Loki’s been shifting how he’s sitting at twenty minute intervals, but Tony hasn’t moved lest he come off as restless and not loving the book.
“You can put something on,” Loki suggests, having noticed that Tony is done.
“It won’t disturb you?”
“Not if you don’t have it unreasonably high.”
Tony looks around for the remote, and doesn’t see it. “Any idea where the remote is?”
“Eh, it’ll be lying around somewhere. Maybe check the kitchen?”
And so, Tony sets out on a quest to find the remote.
He doesn’t find it.
He looks through every inch of the couch and in every kitchen cupboard but all he finds are pop tarts and pennies.
At some point Loki puts his book aside and decides to watch him look. He’s even smiling a tiny bit which Tony takes for a good sign.
“Hey, so, I couldn’t find the remote.”
“That’s a shame,” Loki says, and he’s definitely smiling, “would be horrible if someone knows where it is.”
“YOU!” Tony says, rounding in on him, depression be damned, he’s been looking everywhere for an hour now! “Where is it?!”
“Wh— why do you think I would know?” Loki says, turning his face away, his arms crossed pretentiously.
“You’re laughing!” Tony says, pointing a finger at him. “I spend ages looking for this legendary remote and find out you’ve been playing me the entire time” —Tony pokes a finger in the center of his chest for emphasis— “and you’re laughing!”
And okay, it’s a little funny, and Loki’s having fun, so Tony huffs a laugh too.
“I’m not laughing,” Loki tries to say flatly, face turned away, as he clearly tries not to laugh.
Tony being Tony does the only respectable thing in this kind of scenario and jumps onto the couch, straddling Loki, so he can turn his face back towards him.
“Where’s the remote!” Tony yells, to no avail, not even a reaction to having sat on his legs. Is Loki even breathing? His smile is clearly becoming harder to hold
“Tell me where the remote is” — Tony grabs the thick novel Loki had been reading — “or I’ll take out your bookmark!”
“No!!!” Loki says, trying to grab hold of his book. “Not the bookmark!!! That’s my one weakness! Please, no! Anything but the bookmark!!!”
“Don’t make me do it!! Because I will!!”
Loki chuckles.
“Fine, you win, here” —Loki reaches a hand under the pillow behind him, and holds up the remote.
Tony snatches it immediately, and gives Loki a peck on the cheek thanks before getting off and going back to his side of the couch.
If Loki looks a little confused about the quick kiss, it’s gone by the time Tony is done flicking through the channels and decides a nature documentary is something they could both enjoy. When Mr Attenborough mentions otters holding hands when they’re happy and Loki asks if he can hold Tony’s hand of course Tony says yes.
Later, when Loki insists on cooking for the two of them he throws together some instant noodles and adds in carrots and peas and egg and mushrooms, and he asks if Tony would like to share the meal down by the beach, he agrees.
“You sure you’re up for this? I don’t mind eating back in the bungalow, and if you’re feeling uncomfortable I’d rather just go back,” Tony makes clear.
“I don’t actually know why I thought staying home would make me feel any better,” Loki says lightly.
“Hey man, sometimes you’ve just gotta stay home, it happens, don’t worry about it,” Tony consoles, carefully going down the sandy grassy slope to the beach, his huge bowl of noodles held in both hands. It smells great. “Besides, focus on the date for now.”
“This isn’t a date, I just asked you out to the beach to eat some comfort food with me.”
“The very definition of my ideal date,” Tony says, listing, “I was invited, there’s comfort food, we’re both already in our sexy pjs, there’s a beach, I think you’re a great friend and we could be more if you wanted, I’ve got my speaker in case we want some romantic classical music, the sunset will happen soon, what more could I want?”
“We also held hands for ages earlier and you kissed my cheek.” Loki winces, “this is totally a date.”
“Sure is.”
“How did I miss that?”
“If it’s any consolation, I was kidding, but you seem on-board, so
 it’s a date?”
“It’s a date,” Loki confirms.
“Noodles on a beach is actually one of my secret fantasies,” Tony says, deadpan.
“Well,” Loki suggests, also deadpan, “there’s plenty of space under the gazebo.”
“Table is kinda obstructive,” Tony points out.
“Only if you’re not creative,” Loki counters.
Tony wriggles his eyebrows, and they both laugh.
———
Loki twists the last of his noodles and stabs his last carrot on his fork and puts it in his mouth. He looks into Tony’s bowl, and finds he’s actually finished first.
“You’re an even slower eater than me,” Loki notes aloud.
“Am not!” Tony blubbers out through a mouthful of noodles, “I’m just taking my time to savour it.”
Loki hums, and puts an elbow on the table to watch him finish up.
“So, what do you want to do now?”
Tony slurps up the rest of his food. “Well, now that I’m done, kiss?”
“I was thinking we could stand by the shoreline and get our feet wet, maybe walk up and down the beach a bit
”
“I mean, I’d rather walk up and down you,” Tony says, making a show of looking over Loki, who in turn snickers.
“I’m sorry, that was terrible,” Tony laughs, “it’s just, walk on the beach, that’s so freakin romantic, yeah I’m up for that.”
And it’s nice knowing that they can still hang out as friends, even if Loki is admittedly also intent on the kissing part.
They leave their bowls and flip flops in a pile in the sand and walk to the shore together.
Tony’s hand is warm in his as they swing their arms gently and just take in the salty air and talk about things; just facts about themselves and stories about life and things they like.
Loki’s not sure how much time has passed but it’s dark and only the night sky and it’s reflection on the water provide any light when he presses a hand under Tony’s chin to tip his face up so he can kiss him. It’s slow and sweet, and Tony— even though Loki finds it hard to believe in the moment —kisses back.
They pull apart, and everything is irrelevant in the face of the happiness they feel in having found each other, even by chance.
They kiss again; slower, deeper, and with an urgency ill-befitting of the time and space they have available.
I posted a lot yesterday. I’m not going to post as much today. Yesterday I needed to let it all out.
I look like hell this morning. I haven’t slept. I spent so much time crying yesterday that I am puffy today still and I have a headache.
But I am in a cute dress that’s been hidden in my wardrobe since I got here. It’s never been worn and today is the day. I have on underneath that ridiculous underwear I bought that my friends keep hassling me to wear to dancing because it’s slightly x-rated. I have the Spotify Halloween Throwback Thursday song list giving me life. I’ve organised to see my friends this weekend. Just a couple, just the ones who will give me space if I need it. I’m doing my radical acceptance skills at what feels like ten minute intervals and it’s only 7:30am. I will get through this, I always do. I am distracting by forcing myself to think of other things, ridiculous things like which outfit I am really going to wear for the Christmas dance show (even though I never actually go and never perform. I could do an entire Christmas show on my own with the outfits I already own though
).
I’m not letting myself think about things like the show that was on last night. The one he encouraged me to watch and that I have previously given him a running commentary of. I’m not thinking about how I lasted only five minutes before turning it off.
It’s awful to be here again. It’s awful to have more evidence that I’m just unlovable. It’s awful that it played out this way and that no matter what I did I will never be good enough. As always, I am the person on the sidelines making up for the deficits and patching the holes.
But I am forcing my thoughts elsewhere. Physically I’m doing the stuff that would suggest I’m okay - hair washed and new dress. I should want better for myself than to waste another minute on someone who has spent half the duration of his relationship emotionally cheating with me and who claims to not feel the same way about me that I feel about him. Half the duration. I should want better. I should demand better. But so should she. And he should demand more of himself. You don’t spend a year emotionally cheating on your partner and then tell lies like they’re the person you want to be with and you’re happier with them. You don’t behave like that if you’re already in a relationship with the person you want to be with. He did better this time, he really did, but he also prioritised my happiness over hers. Why? Why, when he didn’t want me but he did want her?? No wonder I was and am so confused. He tried so much harder this time but we still ended up in the same place. The place where he says it’s her he wants despite his actions.
I know I’ll get through this. And I know that over time it will probably come to mean nothing because he has demonstrated that I was never good enough. I tried to bend and contort myself into the friendship role so we could remain in each other’s lives and yet here I am again. He becomes just another man who loved how I made him feel but who didn’t love me. It’s going to be a very long, slow journey, but there will be another side eventually. Probably a very long way down the road. Somewhere like 2023. I am a slow heal and my feelings were the really big kind.
Knowing we will never see each other again or speak again is incredibly painful right now though as my feelings are what they are. So I keep reminding myself, on repeat, that he never felt the same. It forces me to accept that this is the really real end. Because if he felt the same, after everything that’s happened and his behaviour over the year, if he felt the same he would be with me. But he isn’t. So this is nothing more than a one-sided heartbreak I could’ve saved myself from if I’d stopped letting myself think I meant more to him than I did. I could’ve saved myself from this. Why didn’t I? Why did I let myself end up here again?
On repeat. “It is what it is and I just have to accept it.”
Beckett Harrington x F!mc (Ellie)
The Elementalists
Warnings: none fluff
A/N: @feartheendlesssummer made a post I just so happened to see so here we are! Here is the post that’s my prompt
I unfortunately do not own Beckett Harrington, I only own my MC and Beckett is the property of @playchoices (lucky)
Tumblr media
~Masterlist~
The empty hallways of Pendergast echoed Beckett’s footsteps as he walked down them, book in hand. Professor Englund had told them to prepare for an upcoming test on magickal flora and they’re principal uses, and he wanted to know everything like the back of his hand. Nature such as flowers always excited Beckett, like the stories behind their name, or what climate they grow, but ever since he started his studies at Pendergast, all the light and beauty of them reminded him of her.
Beckett had assured himself and his family that after he left for Pendergast, nothing would stop him from being the most focused student. All those plans seemed to slowly dissolve the more time he spent with her. If they were in the same room he could never stop his eyes from wandering towards her, if they were talking, he would always get lost in her emerald green eyes that would glow on all on their own. All his plans for 4 years of no distractions where now gone. Poof
“Pull yourself together Harrington...” he growled under his breath. He would see the smallest things that reminded him of her. Flowers, the color yellow. The gosh darn sun for goodness sake. He couldn’t stop...
As he rounded the corner, he heard a familiar voice sound from behind him.
Speaking of the most perfect human being to ever exist...
“Harrington!” Ellie called from behind him. She jogged up to him as he slowed down. After she had caught up, she smiled at him from the side, giving him a million butterflies in his stomach.
“What’re ya up too? It’s not like you to not be at the library at this hour. Don’t we have an exam coming up soon?” She starts the conversation like always.
But... like always... he wasn’t listening. I mean he was?
He only stared at her face and listened to the sound of her voice. Anything she was actually saying went in one ear and out the other.
“-I mean you’re always there so I went lookin-“
She paused and turned to face him.
“Um... hellooo?? Beckett? Anyone home?” She slightly waved her hand in front of his face to grab his attention.
“Huh?!” He snapped back into reality to find Ellie raising her eyebrows at him with a soft smirk playing on her lips.
Ugh, snap out of it Harrington! She’s right there! My gosh she’s so adorable and cute. Oh no I’m doing it again...
He cleared his throat before talking.
“Uh, Yeah, Professor Englund gave us the study guides for them yesterday. I’ve completed part of it already but I had potions homework from Professor Kontos.” He tried to ignore the fact that he was practically drooling at her the moment he hearses her voice.
“Yeah, that’s another reason I was looking for ya.” She said.
“What do you mean?” They started waking again.
“I need some help with my test studying. Those study guides haven’t stuck and I’m not feeling very good about it so far.” She explained looking at him with hopeful eyes.
“Wanna go outside to the gardens and study with me?” She asked motioning to her backpack that he assumed was study material. Her smiles could light up a room and it sent him into a spiral but he was able to keep his composure this time.
“Uh, sure of course. I’m um, ready when you are.”
I sound like an idiot...
Her eyes lit up and her smile grew wider.
“Thank youuu!!! I’ll buy you a cup of coffee after the exam as a thank you.” She promises. He looks to her in suprise.
“Why would you want to pay me back?” He asked slightly siltig his head to the side.
“Its as a thank you, silly! You’re helping me improve my grades and get better at this whole magick thing, I can at least buy you some coffee to give my thanks.” She insists.
“I-Um, that’s- I.”
Calm down...
He clears his throat. “Thank you, Ellie...”
“Anytime! If you need a coffee buddy then I got you.” She starts but gives him a sideways glance with a smile. “And spending time with you is never bad either.” She winks.
Uh oh. Beckett felt the heat rising to his cheeks, making Ellie giggle.
“Come on, mr. tomato.” She laughs and starts walking towards their destination leaving Beckett to gawk after her before catching up.
A few short minutes of walking and the pair made it to their study area. Ellie found a work bench and placed her stuff down, then turning her head up to look around at the beautiful scenery that surrounded them.
Nothing here is as beautiful as she is...
Beckett shook his head at the cheesy comment and followed suit in placing his book bag down. Ellie smiles at him and grabs first book out.
“Ready to help a maiden in distress?” She says plopping her ‘Magickal Flora Encyclopedia’ book down on the table
“Uh, Yeah.” He says grabbing some other books to keep him busy while she works on the tasks he gave her to improve. A few minutes of explaining and Beckett is ‘reading’ on some potion properties while she studies.
When I say ‘reading’, you can obviously tell he is in fact, not reading...
His gaze glanced back and forth between his book and her face more times then he hairs on his head.
Why is she so perfect!?!?! Stop it Harrington, you need to focus here.
He didn’t focus.
There was something so magnetic about her as a whole. The urge to hug her, kiss her, touch her hair, was stronger than anything he had ever felt.
He has never been in a serious relationship. Sure he had crushes a few times, but nothing about those could even come close to out numbering how strongly he felt about her.
“Andddd, done!” Ellie said about ten minutes later smiling up at him. He didn’t even realize how long it had been.
“Nice work. You think you’re done for today? It’s almost eleven and we can work some more tomorrow.” He said closing his book.
“I can at around 2:30 after Theif practice, how does that sound?”
“Perfect.” He smiles.
“Wanna walk around? I’ve only been here once but it’s so pretty.” She stares in awe at the garden’s beautiful flora and vegetation, making Beckett want to stare at her face even longer.
“Sure, I’d like that.” He replies with heat in his cheeks. She turns her head back towards him and smiles.
“Let’s go!”
Tumblr media
Ellie watches Beckett as he explains some of the flowers around the garden as well as their purpose, some of which she remembers from her studying and tests herself on. He even gave her his jacket to keep her warm.
It smells like him too...
She enjoyed watching Beckett talk about his passions and it made her happy to know that he was enjoying himself and was able to be comfortable around her.
He’s also cute. She smiles.
“-and that’s why they can be made into a tea without the side effects of its plain nectar.” Beckett finishes before checking his watch.
“Guess it’s time to head back, huh?” Ellie guesses adjusting her book bag that laid on her shoulder.
“I suppose so...” Beckett looks a little deflated and the thought of tonight ending.
“Are you upset I have to go?” Ellie jokes bumping her should go his playfully.
“Well I- um... yeah, I kinda am.” He admits making Ellie smile softly.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow Beckett, don’t miss me too much.” Ellie waves at him and gives him her thanks before walking towards the garden exit.
Buttt, just before she left, an idea popped into her head making her giggle. She turns around to catch back up to him.
Beckett turns around hearing her footsteps.
“Ellie? Everything oka-“ He starts But was abruptly cut off by her lips softly pressed against his. A current of electricity runs through him and her hand on his cheek felts so warm and soft. He closed his eyes and returned the kiss softly.
He felt the heat rise in his cheeks as she pulled away with a goofy smile.
“Sorry, just had to. See you.” She starts walking backwards towards the exit and shoots him a wink before turning and walking away, leaving a bumbling Beckett in her wake.
Holy Shit... he thought and started smiling like a fool. That was the most incredible thing to ever happen to him.
Now there was most certainly never going to be ‘focus’ again...
