my essaying about my digital art journey below!!

2015 - i was very immersed in the soul eater community! i kept doing resbangs and making friends, and i love doing AUs, specifically soul & maka centric. this is the HTTYD AU where soul is the dragon!

2016 - yes this is Little Things PH's OCs that i did back in the day! i love their lil guys so much i had to make fanart. this was the art i gave to Ate in person!!

2017 - i drew a lot more pokemon this time ! idk why i didn't draw more of it digitally before. i had too much soul eater brainrot lmao. so i combined them! behold contestshipping x soma AU

2018 - this was the time when i got into K-pop! specifically Monsta X haha, i got more interested in doing fashion, especially for male characters~ (and i had to draw my beloved agenda, somakid)

2019 - my bias from MX, Minhyuk on a whale with Minggom! this was made for an artbook that was sent to him! i hope he got to see this along with my tiny message ;; i delved more into a new tiny chibi art style here

2020 - i drew way too much during this year and it led me to impossibly high standards for my art to this day //sobs. i redrew my Your Lie in April AU fanart and i really think i improved so much….. i went out of my comfort zone to really draw the background and the piano

2021 - genshin brainrot started here !! i was trying to find my style even more, and i love kokomi's color palette. i remember looking at 10x references and combining them into this specific pose in the fanart. i still think to this day this is one of my personal favorite art pieces of all time

2022 - another personal favorite art piece (and something my friend aura and a commissioner personally loved!), i was practicing on drawing men since i wasn't confident, but seeing how this turned out made me want to keep going ❤️

2023 - the latest maka & kid piece that i made! they are so precious to me. i love trying out new poses and dynamics, and i tried changing their outfits a bit more to highlight that i wanna try new fashion stuff ^^; i'd like to say it was a job well done ngl

2024 - and finally, a recent piece that i'm most proud of, and shows a lot of my art style (and i drew the background from scratch!). i redrew an old comic panel from a now discontinued comic, but i feel like i improved so much in terms of rendering, coloring, and anatomy!!

I wanted to have their refs here so people can find them relatively easily and not have to go digging through their Toyhouse galleries to find them lol. If anyone ever wants to draw them, you are very much encouraged to do so!! Same goes for asks about my characters! Those are always welcome as well!!

after drawing the sparkly bider-man i wanted to make one for my AU... purely self-indulgent...

I doubt Peter would really take the time and expense to make a special pride suit he would only wear once or twice unless Johnny convinced him or smth so it's mostly hypothetical but still fun —

I was looking through my timeline trying to figure out when would make the most sense for this (which also included: has Johnny outed himself yet) and I ended up deciding 2014 makes the most sense because well, in 2012 Peter will be locked in a basement during June, and in 2013 he would be busy with Electro and finishing grad school, but 2014 is like... right after he and Flash get married so I can easily imagine Johnny being like "c'moooon Spidey, let's dress up together, you just got gay*-married" etc. and, well, peter does like to dress up... (otherwise he wouldn't be in spandex all the time 😂)

normally I avoid metallic or shiny spandex like the plague for suit designs cause I think it looks cheap but I made an exception for this 😂 it probably IS cheap...

posing for pictures... johnny's idea, naturally. in my timeline i think johnny outs himself in like 2011 or so after a very messy divorce (from lyja) but I'm not spending too much time on the F4 stuff in this aside from just having a general idea so if they appear in a fic I know what's going on 😅 anyway by 2014 johnny is def way more comfortable with being publicly gay, since the cat's long out of the bag, though he's still got a lot of issues... but he's good at pretending to be okay :)

but also he still has a crush on peter 😂 tfw you have the hots for your superhero friend who just got married

peter actually already knows how johnny feels about him by the time he gets married, i just thought the dialogue was funny

I thought it would be fun if the lens frames were sparkly... normally I have his frames out of vulcanized black rubber (like car tire rubber) (...like might actually be carved from old tires) just cause I prefer the matte and slightly soft look compared to plastic... I figure something like sparkly firm silicone or sparkly plastic is probably pretty achievable for Peter to make. And the lenses would just be his normal bulletproof lenses but with an iridescent film on the outside to make them a little rainbowy...

and I think in 2014 irl holographic glitter spandex was like... something that existed that you could buy lol so i figure he can very carefully sew a holographic spider on.... so the spiders are like, that silvery white rainbow glitter kind of look

no webbing because there's a limit to how much labor and time peter would be willing to put into a flashy, kind of useless costume that he wouldn't be able to/want to wear very often... (and i wasn't a fan of how it looked)

bisexual fingers. there's a dirty joke in there somewhere.

it's difficult to come up with body-covering outfits that are suitable for summer weather as-is but the fact that he's wearing polyester spandex underneath really adds a layer of "i'm going to get heatstroke and die" to this outfit. lots of linen though. at least the armpits are athletic mesh.

also yeah the spidey shirt is a leotard with a snap crotch so. he's really just hoping that doesn't unroll under his clothes cause it would absolutely hang down very visibly from under his shirt if it were to fall. (maybe he can use his electrostatic sticking powers to just. hold it in place...)

he also can't roll down the waistband of his tights because it's more rigid than the rest of his costume on account of that's where he keeps all his spare web cartridges and it would suck if they all fell out LOL

i also drew this which is much more corny/embarrassing but i thought it was a cute idea — by necessity has to be after flash is public and transitioning etc… so 2016 at the earliest but i drew this more like 2017 or 2018, after she's been on hrt and stuff and is probably more confident

i don't think there's a worry of accidentally spotlighting her/outing her because, well, she probably doesn't pass in a lot of people's eyes… broad shoulders, sideburns, etc. but… peter thinks she's pretty ❤️

i was gonna draw more of the gang but then the list kept expanding like, oh should i include X, what about Y? and it was. too many people. so then i just decided to only draw flash and peter 😂

they should have stickers on their shirts though... like a polyamory sticker... or pins...

*as of most recent plot updates in 2024, Flash starts living publicly as a woman around the time she and Peter get married, but it's probably still legally a gay marriage (at first) even if Flash is like, "Actually, I'm a girl. Surprise!" lmao

How did you come up with luka?

Honestly? Kind of at random? I never put much thought into Luka when I first made him afhdsj I just wanted to have an OC of my own for the Cuphead fandom when the game came out, and I had recently gotten into Object Head characters and saw it as a good excuse to have a no human oc.

(Also long post because I love rambling about my characters)

"Anyway, here's Lucky, because I couldn't think of a cool name.

He's a magic 8 ball that doesn't really predicts others luck but instead influences them, either for good or bad. You just need to ask him to tell you your fortune, he'll shake his head and give you an answer that will affect your luck. He's an adorkable, sarcastic, classy but clumsy dude that loves messing around but won't harm others.

And that's it, hopefully, I'll draw more of this fella in the future, it was relaxing."

At the time I had been in the Creepy Pasta fandom for a while and was not enjoying it as much (too much drama and hostility in my opinion) so I wanted to make a silly, sarcastic, charming character to change things I bit. I don't know how I got to the Magic 8 ball head, but the outfit was sort of inspired by 20s carnivals sort of uniforms? I really just put everything together rather roughly and picked the floating hands because I was struggling to draw arms and I really liked how expressive RGB from The Property of Hate was, so I wanted to try the floating hands too.

He has had a lot of slow development since then, and Fizz helped me lots with his current attire (it was Fizz idea to add magenta to his color palette).

At some point, he also turned from a character that was just fun to draw, to a character who I gave a lot of qualities that I wish I was more like. I guess you could say Luka is partly the parts of myself I have more fun with and aspire to be more like in my life (the positive traits, not the tricking people and all that).

I guess the way I came up with Luka is a mix of, random elements plus growing and changing as I do too. I never planned to get so attached to this character, but he is probably part of the ones I'm most happy I ended up making.

Mae Chouko of Rainbow went through many early designs quite quickly in mid-2013, with her hairstyle and outfit initially changing at least a little bit almost every time I drew her. In her very first design, her hair was shorter, with fewer lighter pieces. By page 12 of the first draft of her story, the drawing in the margin brought her hair to its current length, and mostly its current style. Still, it would change throughout margin drawings to become straighter or parted to one side sometimes, depending on what I wanted it to look like to match whichever outfit I was drawing her in.

Her outfits and hair changed greatly throughout 2014-16, too, for the most part becoming longer, but that is a drawing for another time.

Her wings changed, also. Initially they were much more pointed, with the core of them being black, and only the edges being rainbow. Since 2014, her wings have been entirely rainbow.

As the 24th of August marks 10 years since her first design was created, I thought I'd draw some of her earliest designs, alongside her current design (finalized as of 2017 for the publication of Rainbow) in the upper right corner.

And now, time for bed. It's five in the morning. I stayed up all night doing this.

I've always wanted to do a piece where I gave one of my OCs Smash Bros.-like palette swaps and alternate costume, and, well, here's one finally for Bangs!

A lot of these are references to older pieces no one except my friends have seen before, so you'll hafta check beneath the cut for explanations. If you want 'em, anyway. I'll also provide original art to show where the outfit first appeared, so enjoy how terrible a lot of it looked, like, five or six years ago

Default

First appearance: March 2018

An obvious one, of course. This is her "iconic outfit;" the one I've drawn her in the most. I can't exactly recall anymore why I went with the Nirvana smiley logo in this one piece, or why it stuck, but whatever. At this point, I can't imagine Bangs without it.

Also, as you can see in the first outfit's appearance, I used to draw Bangs with a brown belt instead of a black one. This is something I did all the way until 2020 when I changed how I posed and art'd my characters.

Original

First appearance: November 2017

First of all—gawd, my first few attempts at drawing non-stickfigures were so bad.

Secondly, this is the first outfit I ever drew Bangs wearing. Like the Nirvana smiley, I don't know why I went with the Beatallica. Maybe I was just listening to them at the time I was arting this, I don't know.

Aside from the brown belt, by the way, Bangs's shorts are obviously also a different color. This is, first of all, to help differentiate this palette more from the original, but also to reflect the frayed-end shorts she used to have.

This is an outfit a friend of mine randomly came up for Bangs when she drew Bangs this one time, and then I adopted as canon. It hasn't seen as much use lately, but I still like keeping it around.

I'd also never drawn Bangs wearing those shorts with that shirt, I thought they looked together, so...

Vicky

First appearance: February 2020

This palette is based on an outfit I randomly came up with for Bangs for a Valentine's Day piece one year. That wasn't the first time I'd drawn Bangs wearing a green shirt, but it was the only time I'd drawn her wearing black pants. I didn't realize until afterwards how much it reminded me of Vicky from Fairly OddParents, and I guess that's why it stuck with me enough to wanna reference it here.

The text on Bangs's shirt ("HELP I'M A ROCK") is taken directly from the title of a song from The Mothers Of Invention's debut album Freak Out!.

Summer

First appearance: July 2020

This is Bangs's summer outfit, of course. This is around when I realized how good Bangs looked in warm summer colors, but for some reason I haven't taken advantage of it too much.

Birthday 2020

As the palette's name give away, this is based on the outfit Bangs wore for her 2020 OC birthday piece, which was taken from one P. J. Soles wore in the 1979 film Rock 'N' Roll High School (to go along with how the overall piece was based on the cover for the Ramones album Road To Ruin).

Birthday 2022

First appearance: August 2022

The most recent reference in the set. This palette is based on the outfit Bangs wore in her 2022 OC birthday piece (of course), which was taken from what Wendy from Gravity Falls wore in the episode "Love God". I just thought Wendy was cool and that this outfit was neat, so...

Shy Gal

First appearance: September 2017

The first time I ever drew Bangs digitally, she was wearing a Shy Guy mask, so here's an alt. costume based on the whole Shy Gals thing.

I've provided two images here as context: the original piece where she wears the masks, and then an OC birthday art from a year later referencing it where you can see Bangs wearing the hoodie without the mask so you can see her face.

Fun fact: the date I drew the original piece is Bangs's OC birthday, since I can't remember when exactly I originally came up with her beyond "winter 2011."

oH BOY so I've had bonomo for over 7 years now so uhhh I do indeed got plenty of old material of those two and how they kinda evolved and changed over all that time

so lucky for you guys, for once I'm gonna *pukes in mouth a lil* ugh, share my old art from when I was 15, oof uhhh you're welcome in advance (yes I realize some of my old followers here could have been following since I was 15 but still) also since I've had these characters for so long and tie into my own life at times I may accidentally go off on some tangents but whatever

bonomo

2015: aight so I first made this lil dude in september 2015 in a sketchbook after school. didn't think much of him at the time, just a cool character design that kinda stuck around. an ex friend of mine gave him the name bonomo (I suck at naming things) but yes humble beginnings here, literally just a little guy

early 2016: ok so at this point I got attached to the design and wanted to flesh him out more. at first he was just a lil creature with a monitor head, but I wanted to run with that retro computer kind of theme and fully embraced it by making him into a robot

mid/late 2016: alright so here is when the design really started to take shape and tighten up as you can see, from this point not much changes with bonomo as far as the design goes except for just minor art style changes from here. this is where I start building more personality, being rather positive, naive, goofy

2017: here is where I really start knowing the character well and finally get all the kinks out of the design. ended up making him very expressive, taller, softer, rounder, everything past this point is peak bonomo

2018/2019/2020/2021/2022: not much to report at this point his design is pretty much solid from here

nova

early 2016: so here I first wanted to make a simple persona/self insert kinda thing and made this rough unnamed loose design of a lil alien creature, as you can see I cannot decide on a color palette to save my life

mid/late 2016: got a name for them and started calling them nova, and I finally picked a goddamn color palette and basic outfit design about damn time. at this point they went from being just a nameless self insert persona concept to be their own character instead

2017: same with bonomo, this is where I feel like I got a good solid design for them, and all of their major design has stayed the same from here on out. I also brought back/revived some elements from their very first designs in 2016 as a design for their younger self for backstory purposes, but this is still a bit rough and I put it on the back burner to shape up their current design and story before tackling their backstory

2018: not much change here except I feel my art has gotten much better at this point lol

2019/2020: at this point I have bonomo and nova's personality, design, dynamic, and story rough ideas down pretty solid so I work more on nova's past and backstory more and have nailed down the design for their younger past self

2021/2022: both versions of nova have remained pretty much unchanged from here

early 2016: both bonomo and (at the time unnamed) nova were more of just designs than the characters we know em as today. I started drawing them together around march 2016 just because I thought "oh haha a robot and alien, sci-fi cross over time" without thinking much of it

mid/late 2016: here I find myself drawing the two together more and it's at this point I realize to myself 'oh shit I can do something with this' and started to really flesh out who they are and where they came from and wanted to turn them into full characters instead of just little doodles. here I started experimenting with lore and story ideas, many of which have changed a lot or have been scrapped completely by now. at first I imagined both of them being from space, but ended up scrapping that and having bonomo be native to earth. I also didn't have a full motive for nova to come to earth yet either, but I knew they'd both be on earth at this point just causing trouble. I also was debating making their story much more depressing and even toxic at points for the two of them, even debating having bonomo leaving nova for good at some point, but that just made me sad over time so that quickly was changed

2017: here is both when their main design elements and personality start to take proper shape. I base their personalities off of exaggerated aspects of my own, bonomo being my goofy silly naive geeky half and nova being my feral stubborn paranoid half. I have also started forming the very rough idea of nova's backstory to how they arrived on earth, why they're on earth, how bonomo and nova meet, and their basic every day lives

2018: ok so now that I have their designs, personalities, and daily lives and motivations down, I start working on their actual story and have gotten it pretty solid now (but these are all spoilers so hmm ask for more info later if y'all really want uhhhhhhh)

2019/2020: at this point my art has gone from much more simple and flat color generally to much more rendered and symbolic and distorted and psychedelic, cuz this was after I dropped out of college and was battling some nasty drug addictions at the time which quite literally changed how I see the world to a much more confusing and broken and distorted place, and my art changed to reflect that. it was at this point that I started working more on nova's backstory seriously since it ties into where their story finishes

2021/2022: my art at this point was a lot of self reflection cuz I had a lot of emotions and a lot of personal growth and a lot of change in my life at this point and phew these two were really going through it in my artwork while I figured my shit out. but here we are now!

What are you wearing right now: the practical all black outfit i've been wearing (unfortunately) for most of the last 3 weeks as i work backstage crew for a musical. usually i change between work and the theater, but my sister starts a new job today which means there will be commute time added as she comes to get me, instead of her being here right at 5, so we won't have TIME to go home and change and get food before we have to head to the theater, so i'm just cutting out the middle man and wearing it all day. this is the third weekend of performances though, show closes sunday, so it's the only time i'll have to.

Piercings? only ears, and i don't wear earrings very often, really only for special occasions

Tattoos? i've got one tattoo, as a memorial for my dad who died in 2017. it's a snippet of lyrics from one of the songs he wrote, behind my left ear. i'm planning on getting a memorial tattoo for my grandmother who died in november(?? i think) but we can't currently FIND the drawing she did that i was gonna get. so. if we ever find that again, i'm gonna get it on my hip.

Glasses or contacts? contacts, all day almost every day for about 20 years now, i put them in before i even get out of bed in the mornings. i hate not having peripheral vision in glasses.

Something you’re looking forward to: strike for this show i'm working 😂 probably the first time i've ever looked forward to strike (the process of disassembling a show's set and clearing out the theater and dressing rooms, huge ordeal) but after dealing with these obnoxious fucking difficult to maneuver set pieces for the last month, i think i will greatly enjoy reducing them to piles of wood and screws.

Earlier today I also shared the Saturnian lore with my best friend, and he asked me some worldbuilding questions about them. I'll paste some of them here, prepare for massive infodump.

Is this like written by the Saturnians pov or Humans? Since its like an exstensive look on Saturnians

Human observation, yes. Saturnians are very secretive on what data they want to share. Except basic census data, that is still fine for them.

Does the inter space travel from earth and satun back and forth exists?

It does exist. Their space travel enables Earth-Saturn travel in 3-4 months depending on orbit position of the two planets.

For comparison, Pioneer 11, the first Saturn space probe, reached the ringed planet after about 6 years (1973-1979)

also interplanetary space travel is now common? Like earth residents can afford tour to Saturn or is it still closed off to general public?

They use Saturnian ships to transfer people back and forth. Frankly no one really wants to wait 6 years to reach the ringed planet when it can be done within 4 months.

The agreement that the two races had to make to get permission to board Saturnian ships was lengthy. Even then human passengers are closely supervised to make sure they don't "steal" technology.

its interesting that if Saturn itself is 'alive', does the Saturnian revere every land that they built upon and try not to damage or relentlessly build on them and have lenghty process to learn if the soil should be preserved and everything like that?

They try to build… what's the word… respectfully? Responsibly? One of the two. Minimizing altering the landscape and build on whatever is there for them to use.

They claim to be able to "speak" or "hear" from the planet itself, a concept that's truly out of human comprehension. Whether it's actual extrasensory perception, a form of indirect communication with other individuals, or simply just a belief is anyone's guess. They have words for things that humans can't define. And the fact that their life expectancy is 5 to 7 times longer than an average human is already well beyond human comprehension.

They've been around for more than 1.5 million years. Modern humans (that is, homo sapiens) have only been around for 200,000.

whats saturnians blood color? Do they have the same blood types like humans

It's black, nearly void black. Blood types, I haven't done that far on worldbuilding. I may just left it out for simplicity.

also what they were look like in their tribal stage before being one of the most advanced race in the universe? Also if we ever venture outside Saturnia, will we ever find other settlements or civillizations or maybe ruins of Saturnians past?

They've conserved their history completely in digital media through augmented reality in almost perfect detail. This allows anyone in Saturn to access it for research purposes with minimal need to travel. Any leftovers of past civilization have been repurposed for building and manufacturing.

Currently they're experimenting with copying consciousness into digital media although the ethics for that is still debatable among various cultures and subcultures.

if Saturnia inspired from solarpunk aesthetics, does communal events exist? Like maybe a massive festival dedicated to Saturn or 'nature' in our sense or a national potluck day or smth like that, just wholesome communal events that connect with nature and everything

They still do in less populated areas. A bit difficult to do in large dense settlements, where instead it's done through virtual reality.

Saturnian "virtual reality" has successfully replicated senses like touch and smell, alongside visual and audio, by directly and wirelessly interacting with the brain stem and providing "fake" senses. Which means this has also allowed the disabled to partake in virtual reality events.

I don't have ideas for Saturn-specific social events right now, but once I do, I'll tell you.

did they ever harness nuclear power?

Fusion reactors, in extremely limited numbers and in very specific use cases. Majority of power is still harvested from wind farms.

i mean if saturnians are technologically advanced, they must've created a technology that can replace or repair limbs?

Prosthetics? They're not super advanced in medicine. They still haven't solved their low healthy birth rate issue. 1.5 million years and they haven't figured out why only 7 out of 10 to 11 of their eggs are able to successfully hatch.

Some cultures believe it's the way Saturn intended and they shouldn't try to figure it out, like why would one question how nature works. Some other cultures believe it's a hidden genetic code waiting to be unlocked, and then some other cultures also believe that doing so will just cause disaster.

If it was an alien utopia, they wouldn't need weapons like railguns. But here they are, still having internal issues waiting to be solved.

Summer Wardrobe Worries

I definitely need to get some new outfits for the summer. The cheap T-shirts I have are mostly completely worn out and somewhat translucent despite only having them for like a year (don't buy Style & Co clothes if you value your money), and I can't wear sweaters and/or undershirts all the time to hide that.

So... I need to start coming up with some general ideas of what I want to be comfortable with.

Shorts: I haven't worn shorts since I started shaving my legs long before I came out (probably around 2017). Now that my body hair growth has slowed somewhat thanks to 💕HRT💕 I think I would be okay with going out in them. It's been so long since I've shown that much skin though, I think it'll be hard initially.

Crop Top: I think I have a good body type for crop tops in a conventional sense. I have never worn something quite so revealing as a daily outfit though, so the thought of it makes me a bit lightheaded. I always worry about making a fool of myself or looking weird and drawing undue attention to myself, so this one is a pretty big step for me.

Bra: I've been wearing the same five sports bras since 2020, before I started transitioning. Since that time, they've gotten a little tight for me. I've never been a fan of wired bras or lace, so I've been looking at bralettes recently. One thing that's been holding me back has been actually finding one that fits. I got my current cheap sports bras off Amazon🤮 and kinda guessed at the size. It didn't fit snugly like it should due to my then diminished chest, so I never learned how to properly fit a bra. I know that it's the difference between mid-breast and underbust, but the thought of actually going to a store and trying some out is terrifying to me. I still haven't entirely gotten over the feeling that I'm somewhere I don't belong.

I still want to maintain the cute/cozy aesthetic that I can't seem to put my finger on, so that just adds another layer of complexity. There's so much that I want to do but haven't worked out how to go about. I'm starting to look at more outfit inspo and a lot of it looks good, but isn't really what I'm going for. I'm getting tired of feeling anxious over this stuff, and need to take the plunge to change that.

The Girlishness of Woman according to Fascinating Womanhood (1963; 2017)

Fascinating Womanhood is a book written by Helen Andelin and was first published in 1963. I just finished reading Fascinating Womanhood: Vintage Edition (2017) revised and edited by Helen's daughter, Dixie Andelin Forsyth. Both versions focus on developing a deeply romantic marriage. One of the mentioned qualities that the ideal woman should have, from a man's point of view, attracts special attention.

I warn you that this book deviates from feminist and scientific literature, and the advice contained therein is rather the subjective reflections of the authors (more about criticism FW).

Childlikeness

According to the authors, childlikeness is the most charming feature: is an extreme girlishness. It is a quality of sauciness, spunk, innocence, trustfulness and tenderness all mixed into one [p. 222].

Childlikeness may manifest itself in communicating emotions, asking for things, manner and in appearance. However, I focused more on finding the answer to why adult women should pretend to be little girls? First of all, extreme girlishness makes him feel more masculine thanks to the strong contrast, so it is a form of communicating women's position. The mentioned charm comes from flattering men and transforming them into superiority.

Also a woman who is angry and moody gives the impression of a child who suddenly changes emotions. The stronger one should protect and take care of such a delightfully human little creature, therefore Andelin's ideal woman is defenseless.

Girlish appearance

According to Fascinating Womanhood childlikeness is extremely exciting for men. And since men are visual creatures, girlishness should also be reflected in a woman's outfit. As well: this youthful apperance also has a psychological effect* on the woman in actually making her feel younger [p. 260].

What should an ideal wardrobe contain?

jumpers pleated skirts, baby doll yokes, skirts with ruffles, petticoats and pantaloons

dresses trimmed with rickrack, daisies, buttons and bows

white collars, black velvet ribbons, bright and vivid colors of fabrics

The above things sound like something out of the coquette or dollete aesthetic popular today. Therefore, it can be said that Andelin's classic work, slightly updated by her daughter, also fits into today's framework. Maybe we shouldn't draw inspiration from the childlikeness quality, but it must be admitted that women have wanted to look girlish for at least 60 years!

*I think that the authors had in mind a self-fulfilling prophecy with this vague term.

Saving strats for IEM Sydney: How aliStair and Grayhound are preparing for a homecoming blitz

sixteen days out of one thousand two hundred and eighty. It has been that long since an Australian core team has advanced past the group stage of an S-Tier international Counter-Strike competition. The days of an AZR-led 100 Thieves destroying the IEM Katowice stage are long gone. Australia's best chance at international success right now is Grayhound Gaming, although their calendar year has disappointed many supporters. Imagine if they break that playoffs duck, of all places, in their own backyard. After nearly four years, Australia will taste top-tier CS once more as IEM Sydney returns this October. Sixteen of the world’s best will descend on the New South Wales capital for a bumper prize pool and in front of the best audience in esports (no bias here, whatsoever). https://twitter.com/IEM/status/1671043955918528515 To Alistair Johnston, the rumors of IEM’s return down under had swirled for a long time, and he could barely keep his excitement when talking to Dot Esports. “We kind of been hearing words about it for like, nearly a year,” aliStair reveals, positively wrapped the tournament is making its long-awaited return. To the surprise of few, aliStair noted the raucous atmosphere and how the entire Oceanic scene just glows when given a chance to witness premium CS at home. “IEM Sydney is so nostalgic, it was where Josh and I really started off our careers and it’s just an amazing environment.” The COVID-19 pandemic canceled the tournament’s initial move to Melbourne in 2020, and since then Aussies have been teased with events like ESL Challenger in 2022 and 2023—both of which saw large crowds in their own right. But aliStair hopes those events will pale in size and scale to IEM Sydney at the Aware Super Theatre. “It brings the whole Australian CS community into one place; even if you’re not at the event, people are going out together afterward to catch up. It’s so good.” Alistair graced IEM Sydney twice as a player; first for The Chiefs in 2017, then with Order a year later, pushing an American Cloud9 roster to the limit in the group stage lower bracket. Alongside current teammates Jay “Liazz” Tregillgas and Simon “Sico” Williams, aliStair fell short of taking to the Sydney stage, but he and Grayhound are out to rep the home crowd in the arena this time. They did so in late April this year at DreamHack Melbourne. Even at 9am in the morning—far from “gamer hours”—the Aussie crowd was there to back GH home against Bad News Eagles. “I just love the Aussie culture and the move it’s made into esports,” aliStair reminisces, pointing out in particular how amazing it was to bring friends and family into their world. These events are far and few between for the scene, which were on the rise prior to 2020’s COVID shutdown. Motivation was at an all-time high and the scene held an abundance of cash-strapped organizations willing to get in the action. Without these events, as well as an economic turn away from esports in the region, Oceanic CS fell hard. IEM Sydney could be the catalyst to spark a revival. AliStair in particular would love to see these big-name orgs return to give the region’s best and brightest a chance to make esports a living. In the process, it would improve aliStair and GH’s experience at home, which has become stale of late. “Scrimming and practicing is really shit because there’s no funding for these teams and players to spend their time on,” aliStair explains. “It hurts us because we don’t want to scrim at home, we end up practicing against the same teams over and over—it becomes pointless.” First Vox, now Grayhound: The regression to the mean Let’s wind the clock back to 2015. Veterans of the scene know full well the dominance Vox Eminor held over the Oceanic region. Team Immunity nipped at the heels of the Chad “SPUNJ” Burchill-led outfit but couldn’t quite get above them consistently enough. It’s easy to draw parallels to the stranglehold GH has over Oceania today. Outside of a shock loss to Vertex at the Fortress OCE Masters and a smattering of smaller events, Grayhound have won every single OCE tournament or qualifier they’ve attended—well over two dozen trophies and qualifier wins in three years. The major difference between the two cases, aliStair believes, is the opportunities and pathways the scene can afford today, even in its currently weak state. “It felt for us it wasn’t about being No. 1, it was just about landing these international opportunities regularly and making it to these events,” aliStair says. https://twitter.com/grayhoundgaming/status/1587286703949189127 While it’s hard to pass up the resources on offer to GH for making the Major, aliStair acknowledges the pathways to overseas competition are there for the taking if teams are hungry for it, but admits to doing so without organizational backing is incredibly difficult—something he hopes the boost from IEM Sydney will remedy. “I’d hope to see some familiar organizations to step back in and pick up a team,” aliStair says. “Just landing that one international opportunity and exposure and breaking out that way is a huge start.” And if it isn’t orgs stepping up to cover the gap, it’s the grassroots scene. Smaller scale offerings such as BrisVegas, a tournament local to Queensland’s capital city, are replacing the big leagues and are more than making up for it with a professional broadcast and a competitive atmosphere. These grassroots events not only allow players another outlet to showcase their skills but also a chance for those unable to compete to develop their skills in the industry. “A closer top five to top eight teams makes the scene so much healthier, and grassroots events like BrisVegas bring a lot to the scene,” aliStair says, pointing out that players, including Grayhound captain Josh “INS” Potter, even fly interstate just to play offline CS. “There are even teams playing together at these events and using them as prep for the rest of the season. Stuff like that goes a long way and I don’t think people realize how important it is for the health of the scene. To qualify for something on LAN in Australia is so much fun.” What would it take for GH to grace the Sydney stage? 2023 hasn’t been kind to Grayhound. The squad has struggled to leave its mark in tournaments outside of the Major: The Doggies have won just three series over five events attended. Even at the BLAST Paris Major, despite coming closer than ever, the squad couldn’t crack the Legends Stage. Their follow-ups in Cologne and Malta really didn’t land either, even despite returning from the player break more relaxed than ever before, aliStair says. The global CS calendar cares little for Oceania, often scheduling events during Grayhound’s downtime. “Usually Australia gets disrespected a little bit when it comes to the calendar and we normally end up having to play some qualifier or tourney right at the start or end of the player break,” aliStair explains, adding that the roster made assurances not to go near a computer so they could totally reset. Coach David “Kingfisher” Kingsford departed the roster at the beginning of 2023 and, without a replacement, the team has had to step up collectively to match his work rate. “We’re putting in a lot more work now, especially without David. It felt like with him, he did a lot of stuff for us,” aliStair says, adding that while the departure of their coach hit the team hard, there are positives. “It’s been a little healthier not having him around as it’s forcing everyone to be putting in more work.” A lack of coach was a point of discussion at ESL Pro League last week where, at critical times during their ill-fated group stage run, the ‘Hounds lacked the poise to take a timeout and discuss the game state with a sixth man. For their final match against FURIA, the squad was even given a mannequin in a Grayhound jersey to “sit” behind the team. Naturally, the mannequin didn’t help. Also not helping—GH’s lack of participation in tier two and three events during their European bootcamps. This, however, isn’t for a lack of trying, as aliStair reveals. Grayhound had reached out to many tournament organizers hoping to secure an online event spot to get their reps in before IEM Cologne and ESL Pro League. Alas, they weren’t able to secure anything. “We’re always open for those events because I think they’re really good experiences to be playing, even if they’re online,” aliStair says. “We were keeping our heads out and actively reaching out looking for an event, but we never really got anything back. Then we started seeing these events were going ahead and playing and it was sad because that definitely would have helped us to get some game time, just to get ourselves ready to take on the big teams.” In their current state, Grayhound would really struggle to survive what will be a brutal Sydney group stage against the world’s best. With the likes of FaZe Clan, Vitality, and NAVI all invited and attending, GH’s road is tough, to say the least. But between the jetlag for these top, the ample time ahead of the event to practice, and the home-ground advantage, aliStair is confident he and the ‘Hounds have what it takes to repeat their DreamHack Melbourne antics and make it to the Aware Super Theatre stage. Alongside Justin “jks” Savage at G2 and Chris “dexter” Nong at Fnatic, as well as fellow OCE qualifiers Vertex, there will be plenty flying the flag, and aliStair is keen to see OCE esports thrive at IEM. “Everyone kind of takes the piss out of every team but it’s all harmless,” he says. “Everyone’s having a beer and having fun—it feels like a lot of good humor and messing around.” His final words on the topic? “Get rowdy for IEM Sydney, hope to see you there—and shout us a beer.” You bet, mate.
