Things to do when making a lolita garment from a non-egl pattern.
I have this blouse pattern:
[x]
And I have four cotton voile curtains and a pink bedsheet.
I know that I want to use this pattern and this fabric to make a lolita blouse. I want it to be a blouse that I can wear with JSKs and skirts. So, where do we go from there?
Let's find out:
Step 1 is to check our materials, and make sure that existing lolita fashion pieces exist that are like this pattern, and in this material.
Thankfully, lolibrary makes that really easy.
It's so very nice to have a dedicated team of nerds dedicated to documenting and tagging every single piece of our fashion's history.
And then we grab any picture that feels like it's the same construction as the blouse pattern we have.
Links: https://lolibrary.org/items/af-kawaii-vintage-chiffon-blouse https://lolibrary.org/items/lg-tulle-yoke-blouse https://lolibrary.org/items/aatp-michael-blouse-2024 https://lolibrary.org/items/ap-holy-doll-blouse https://lolibrary.org/items/ap-star-dancer-blouse
That's 5 examples, but I already had a pretty good idea what I was doing, so I didn't keep researching. Don't forget that, if you don't really have a ton of hands-on lolita experience, it's hard to over-research. Also, if you do a TON of research, and you cannot find an example of the thing you want to make in a fabric similar to the ones you want to make it from, that might be a sign.
Now, I went into my own closet, and grabbed the 4 blouses that I most often wear with skirts. I know that I want to wear this pattern with skirts, because I don't always feel comfortable in JSKs on blouses that have bibs/front yokes like this. I've made a bib front blouse before, and I had trouble coording it with JSKs.
Blouses: https://lolibrary.org/items/bodyline-honey-parish-blouse-l364 https://lolibrary.org/items/bodyline-l059-blouse-with-jabot https://lolibrary.org/items/btssb-princess-rose-lace-full-of-frills-blouse https://www.amazon.com/TanQiang-Womens-Lolita-Sleeve-Embroidered/dp/B07BFSLFYC/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2BE37ENMLLTXG&sprefix=lolita+fashio%2Caps%2C217
George and Ginger have a LOT of pictures of people who have made their blouse. I don't want to post any of them specifically here, but this is an example:
This is a HUGE resource for anyone who wants to make this blouse, because in addition to seeing how it looks in the technical illustration and in the sample, we can see how it actually looks when someone makes it. We can also look at the things that we don't like (for EGL fashion) and what we do like.
For example, in my examples, the front yoke is a place to put as many details as you possibly can. We have multiple layers of lace on the edge, and then detailing such as pintucks on the yoke itself. On these, the yoke is the design feature, so by comparison, it's relatively plain.
I also can see the different ways that people use lining, sheer, and sheer over a lining. I don't see a combination of lining/sheer that I like as much as the Axes Femme blouse in the top-right of my inspo collage. I'm going to make mine like that Axes Femme blouse, instead of how the instructions might recommend.
But the main thing that I'm noticing is that this blouse is LONG. That's just the style it is, but it would mean that I can tuck it into skirts but can't wear it over them. Since one of my favorite things to do is to make skirts with elastic tops for low-energy fun EGL, I don't want a blouse that I have to tuck into the waist. So, I look at this, and I know what I want to do:
Things that I can do without modifying the pattern:
Choose what parts of the garment will be lined/flat lined, and what will stay sheer
Add more detailing to the yoke with applied trim
Swap all of the ruffles for lace, to add more detail
Add a ruffle to the bottom.
And things that I will modify the pattern for:
Making the pattern shorter to match my existing blouses
Re-patterning the yoke to add tucks
In addition, I might add a ruffle or some ruffled trim along the button placket. The reason I say might is that I haven't checked if the shirt has a separate placket to apply to the garment, or if it's a self-made placket. If it's separate, it's a very easy adjustment, and if it's made of self, it's a very difficult adjustment. I sew to have fun, and that doesn't sound like fun to me.
Because I wasted a lot of my life trying to get a degree in something useless am a confident sewer, I can look at those pattern modifications and know that they won't be too difficult for me. If this was my first fitted garment made from a commercial pattern, I might elect to skip the patterning adjustments.
So, how do we make the blouse shorter? If you have a blouse you like it's pretty easy:
Step 1) print your pattern, and cut it out if you have to. Step 2) take your favorite blouse.
We're using this Amazon one because it's the longest:
The first piece that I grabbed said "center back", so we line it up with the center back and make a mark where the bottom ends.
For the side front and side back pieces, we measure the side seam with the armpit of the blouse.
For the front, we have to stack the bib onto the front piece, overlapping by the seam allowance, and measure along the center front.
To save fabric, I'm just chopping the bottom of the pattern off a few inches below the marks. This won't make an even bottom hem, but I can straighten the hem after we're done.
If your fabric is absolutely precious and you cannot waste any, there is a more proper way to do this, but if your fabric is absolutely precious and you can't waste any, you should really be making a mockup first anyway, so you can do what we do here, make the mockup, and then transfer your mockup adjustments back onto the pattern.
This is long so to add tucks you google a tutorial for how to add tucks and then do what that says. I took pictures of how I did it and it's so unholy that I can't dare to post it.
Anyway, stick around for me to actually finish this project for once and give my end results about the lolita-ability of this pattern.

name :: queen, velvette, satin, lace, bliss, rose, mercy, vera (short for verity)
age :: 21
pronouns :: she/her, it/its, nameself, hy/hyr, zie/zir, other/others, gur/guro, game/games
roles :: persecutor, antagonizer, berserker, chaosnaut, obsessor, hyperrose holder
species :: doll / alien
gender identity (gore warning!) :: dulcreepic, gurolocuteic, etehungeturic
orientation :: panromantic, polysexual (obsessive love disorder)
source :: brainmade, semi-YTTD
aesthetic (gore warning!) :: yami kawaii, kimoicore, ero-guro, yandere
appearance description :: bliss dresses in cute yet extravagant ribbon-filled clothing. the more bows, lace, and frills it has on it, the better it becomes in hyr eyes. hy has long pink hair — or would it be ‘had’? no; vera’s hair simply shifts to better match her current outfit, albeit with a sort of “punk” style to it. queen maintains a perfectly clean outfit even when actively maiming someone, as she tends to use machines or traps to do the work for her. all of queen’s traps share queens sense of extravagance, whether it be glitter-laced acid tanks, ribbon-made nets, butterfly shaped axes or candy-colored saws. mercy names zir traps after the people they’ve killed: kimiko the axe, lance the acid tank, delilah the razor wire… it helps keep her company in an otherwise lonely maze. lace has pink eyes, but when other gets murderous, intense, or obsessive, they turn a bloody red. unknown to hyr guests, gur has knives strapped to guro legs underneath guro frilly skirts. if any guests try to disobey or break the rules, mercy is quick to cut them down to size.
personality description :: cheerful, sweet and bouncy, queen is the perfect example of pristine behavior. zie is friendly and welcoming to the guests who “visit” her section of the mind. visitors are invited for tea and cakes… but they taste odd… are they- drugged? indeed they are. anyone who has dared to step into satin’s realm will become a new participant in hyr games whether they want it or not. the thoughts that lie behind those eyes are so diabolical and downright torturous that it makes even the devil weep. in satin’s eyes, everything is just one extravagant game. why, you ask? well… why not? things come and go, so why not play with it a little? gambling your life away is a small choice to make with a big impact! at least, if you die, that is. queen is sadistic and revels in the pain of others. seeing hyr captives beg in fear strengths hyr resolve to chase them down and make them work for their freedom. if someone wants to live so badly, then show it! fight for it! how can your life truly be lived if all you do is cower and hide from the things that scare you?! velvette intends to instill its system mates with a deep and powerful will to live and survive — though, in all truth, this doesn’t always work. it hasn’t stopped her from trying.
likes :: any sort of game, creating elaborate traps and deadly puzzles, solving non-lethal puzzles others have made, death traps, regular traps, torture methods, breaking her captive’s minds, torturing people in zir death maze, cute lolita style dresses, strawberry cake, baking, the smell / taste of fear, the saw movies (they give zir “inspiration” for zir death mazes/games), horror games with multiple ways to die (ib, mad father, the witch’s house), anything with a large amount of gore and/or horror, slasher movies, creepypastas, and musing over new ways to kill somebody
dislikes :: disobedience, rule breakers, people who refuse to play hyr games, losing control over a situation, those who faint over blood (what an overreaction — can’t they see how beautiful it is?), bitter tastes, spiky mouthfeel like whole durians and pineapple, black clothing, goth/emo subculture and style, point-blank murder (there’s no eloquence in shooting someone! it has to be bigger than that! grander! worthy of paying attention to!), lengthy monologues (just let her play already, damnit!), people with main character syndrome, and not getting her way
front triggers :: games of any kind, horror movies pertaining to games/traps, the current object of hyr obsession
signoff :: 🍓, 💝, or 🎀

IRL Pokemon Journy (Part 3)
youtube
(music to set mood)
Me and Kio walked all the way to the fashion district that was in Windom and when we made it the howl entire street was full of boutique’s, we walked around and had a little look “hay sis what about this place” Kio looked to where I was pointing an in the shops window was showing off alternative fashion both gothic and kawaii “nice shout sis lets poke around a little” we walked in and there was tones of outfits on display, they have 4 sections downstairs for the women, being underwear clothing accessory's and shoes me and Kio smiled and we picked up a carrier and walked to the underwear section, I looked around in my lane wile Kio was across from me looking at the gothic underwear, I was loving all the pastel colours and found serval pairs I liked.
One being pastel purple with stars on with some frill detailing on the bra and thong, the other one was pail blue with cute little moons and a alolan ninetails embroeded on the bra, the third one was more on the naughty side of things its colour was pastel pink, the bra had underwire but see threw mesh with frilly lace details around the band and the underwear was also see threw mesh with a heart on the bootie that’s been cut out and what made this set naughty was they it was also open crouch.
I giggle to myself while looking at it and Kio walked up next to me “oooooooo sexy the boys would love that” I shot bright red and looked at her “SIS!!!” she started lathing hard “i was just joking hahahahhaah” I smile and shake my head at her and add it into my basket “ow so you are going to get it then” I go shy and fidget a little “well yer.......you never know there could be a time I have to use it” Kio smiles at me and looks into my basket “seven pairs of underwear, that a weeks' worth” I look at her and nod “yer im sure the hotel has a laundry room we could use while staying there” Kio nods at me “yer let's hope they do, so we done in the unaware section? Should we move on to the socks?” I smile and nod and we walk to out sections agen.
It's amazing they have this part divided up, makes things a lot easier to find, I browse through the socks and I pick up some that are all thigh high in white or pastel pink blue and purple, I even got some normal socks and some lounged ones as I do like my fluffy socks no matter the season, after that we headed to the Pj section it wasn’t big of a section but I did find two I liked one lilac silk night dress and a pastel blue silk romper with more cute lace details
Kio was one with hers as well she brought some blue and black top and shorts and also a sexy night dress for herself “all right the time we been waiting for sis alternative style clothing” Kio giggles and we make our way to that section and we both helped each other out with those and soon after we picked up a few accessories to go without look and payed for them and left the store holding three bags in each of our hands so six in total
“Hahahahhaha I can’t remember the last time I splurged money on a howl style change” I happily lathed away as Kio was not happy back in our world she barely had any money to treat herself to stuff like this due to paying bills for the house and food and getting to and from work along with other expenses like tax gas and electric, I had it easy compered to her I was living with my mum so I didn’t have to pay much for rent and that left me with a lot of spending money after I payed out for my rabbit poppy, it’s nice to see her be able to buy the things she likes it makes me happy that she happy “Ok sis we done our shop should we head to a hair salon” I smile and nod and Kio opens her Rotom phone agen wile I do mine as well coz I wanted to know if there was somewhere around here that done colour contact lenses “ok iv found a place its about three blocks that way” I look to were Kio was pointing “ok so after we done that could we head here next” I show Kio my phone and she sees what I looked up “cool, so they do colour contacts here, yer we head there after we done at the salon” Kio smiles happily and we make our way to the hair salon and walk in and both get seated for our new hair change.
Kio just had a trim and dyed her blond hair black with a stormy vibrant blue on the fringe and tips of her hair, me I went for a total colourful change my hair was sectioned into five peses, on my left side I had cyan blue and under that a fuchsia pink on the right side was lavender purple and pastel pink, I had a fought fringe cut in and all that was salmon pink I even had my dead ends cut off to so I had the cute little Bob cut going on and after It was done i was in love with my new hair, We walked out and Kio looks at me “you went so colourful with your hair it suits you sis” I smile happily like a Cheshire Cat at her and I look at her hair “and you finally got the hair of your dreams how’s was the stinging ” Kio looked at me and smiled “believe it or not there was no stinging I think coming here had cured allergic reaction to dyes” I got happy on the spot for her as she always wanted to do this to her hair but couldn’t due to her anergic reaction to what was in our dyes back at home.
We took our last stop in the fashion district and headed to the store were I can pick up some colour contacts “ok sis what colour you thinking off” I’m stood at the wall looking at their colours “I’m thinking of doing two colours like one purple and one yellow” Kio nods and looks at the poster that’s on the wall and points two out “how about violet gem and daffodil yellow” I look at them and nod “sounds good to me I get those” so I walked to the till and ordered them I got the ones that last a year along with all the care stuff for it like a cellulation and contact case for them and we finally left the shopping district and headed to the housing agency.
It took us a wile to be seen to but we got saw by two different people and it was a long prosses but we actually were able to find a place we like in our favourite locations and made a full up front deposit so the apartment would be our in no longer than three weeks, we have to come back then and get our Keys to our new homes “well that was fun” I look at Kio that was exsusted from all the arranging we needed to do “want to grab a few drinks and head back for a bit before we go out agen to get dinner” Kio massaged her shoulder and nodded “yer I need time away from the crowds I’m mentally exhausted” I smile an nod I knew how she felt I started to feel it to so getting back to just relax and recharged would be nice.
We did one more thing before we left and that was pick up some new makeup but after that we got back to the hotel and we both flopped onto the bed “my feet hurt” Kio grones into her pillow and I respond to her “know how you feel but it’s my back that’s killing me” I take my head out of the pillow and I look at my phone from my world “I wonder if you can still send and reseve messages in this world” Kio pulls her face out of her pillow and looks at me “give it a go see if you can” I open up an new message and try to send something to my mum saying I’m ok and I’m still alive just on a road trip with Kim and I sent it, I looked at the screen as I saw the blue bar go up and then my phone made a noise to say it sent “no shit that worked” Kio was baffled and I was stunned but lathing in disbelief as Kio jumped onto my side of the bed and looked at my phone "it actually sent ha let’s see if I get a response” we waited for a bit and then I got an message back “it came through” I opens it and my mum responds with “ok just don’t get into any trouble and stay safe” I was happy because it means I can keep in contact with my mum.
“Well at least we can send messages to our world and they can send them back” I smile and nod as now I can keep my mum updated but getting back might be the issue I can only play the road trip card for so long as eventually I have to come home to see her “I’m going to get out of these dirty clothes and into the new ones we got today” I nod while I was looking at my phone to see if I can still get to my social media In my world and I could “it’s seems like all my functions are working on this phone so does that mean YouTube is too” I clicked on it and it opens up and I smile to myself “so does it work” I turn round to Kio and nod and show her the phone “yer it’s working heheheh which means we can lisson to our world music” she smiles and opens her Spotify “ok then I’m throwing this playlist on ready for a bit of rock music sis” I smile and nod at her “ow you know I’m always up for rock music hit it” Kio pressed play and the music started to play.

Hi Puts! How would you describe each girl’s fashion style and whose style is the closest to yours?
Hi there!!
Phew, okay, that’s actually a pretty hard question, I will try to do my best and find a few adjectives to describe their style. Throughout the years, their style has undergone some changes of course so I will mostly refer to their current fashion style. Also, I would like to clarify that I am a firm believer in wearing whatever the hell you want. I might not like everything (and occasionally make fun of a certain style - no harm intended) but I definitely do not judge. All right, here we go 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→
Wakana: Very feminine with strong (sometimes overbearing) patterns/designs (lace, embroidery, frill, florals, prints, crazy and bright colours, volume, etc). Usually quite modest. Her wardrobe consists of lots of long and loose- fitting skirts/dresses/pants that don’t reveal too much of the contours of her body. The only thing she is always happy to show off are her gorgeous arms and shoulders so naturally, there are a lot of sleeveless clothing items in her collection. Occasionally she will go for a look that accentuates her lovely figure by wearing loose high-waisted bottoms and a tight-fitting top. Typically she pairs her clothes with sneakers or converse because comfort is key.
Keiko: A mixture between edgy-rockish, glitzy-glamorous and cute-girly. Her style is definitely the hardest to pin-point since it’s all over the place. We have seen her in variations of denim with oversized printed sweaters/t-shirts/mesh tops looking like a full-blown rocker girl. But then she will also wear questionable animal prints with big fur cardigans and coats which occasionally make her look like a high-class hooker XD. And lastly, there’s a side of her that just wants to look kawaii and girly with lots of lace, embroidery, embellishment and floral patterns. I like her most when she finds a good balance between her rockish and girlish style. Since she is a sucker for high-end brands she can also go for a more sophisticated and elegant look if she wants to but in most cases there will always be an edgy or cute element to her outfit to keep things toned down. Keiko has lovely legs and she likes to show them off so short pants, skirts, dresses and tunic-length-tops are a staple in her wardrobe. Shoe-wise she will either go for crazy high-heels or combat boots.
Hikaru: Edgy, sexy, casual. Like Wakana she likes loose and comfy clothing (especially on top) but whereas Wakana regularly opts for skirts and dresses Hikaru is more likely to choose a (very tight) pair of denim jeans. Her style is a lot more casual and down-to-earth compared to Wakana’s. Monochromes, muted-earthy colours, no crazy patterns. She is also not at all afraid to show a lot of skin which definitely distinguishes her from Wakana. She is a little more consistent with her edgy-rocker look than Keiko because she rarely incorporates frilly or glamorous elements. From time to time she will go for something cute and girly/feminine but more often than not that outfit will be one of Keiko’s hand-me-downs. These days she is never seen without one of her many pairs of Doc Martens.
As for my personal style, it actually does not 100% align with any of theirs. But I guess it has elements of Wakana and Keiko’s style. I am very much into old-fashioned table-cloth-inspired lace and embroidery like Wakana and I am a sucker for floral patterns just like Wakana and Keiko. There is also A LOT of pink in my wardrobe but I am sure that doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone :P
For the most part I can’t relate at all to Hikaru’s style and I am having a hard time pairing her fashion items (the few that I own) with my other outfits. Wakana’s fashion style is an acquired taste. At first I didn’t particularly like the wide and voluminous cuts but I am slowly getting used to them and by now I very much enjoy wearing all those big tops and dresses. I feel cute and feminine in them but never struggle to breathe or feel self-conscious about my body. Overall I probably like Keiko’s style most but sometimes it’s a hit or miss for me. Oh boy, when she misses, she REALLY misses. Some of her fashion choices are just beyond my grasp XD For example, I will never understand her undying love for outrageous puff-sleeves. She has always been into them but these days it’s even worse since she is so inspired by Korean/Chinese idol fashion. But yeah, generally speaking, my favourite Kala-fashion pieces are without a doubt Keiko’s and those can be most easily incorporated in my day-to-day style. Also, whenever I see her in a new outfit, I usually find myself thinking, “yup, I would definitly wear that too, let me find it and pay an unreasonable amount of money for it!” That almost never happens with Hikaru and only sometimes with Wakana.

I’m listening to the Okami soundtrack and thinking about that, plus Mononoke and Demon Slayer, and it’s like.... Aside from thinking SI thoughts (as usual), this also comes to mind of a fair question.
Why do I like Japan and Japanese culture so much?
Cause it definitely was a whole weeb thing when I was younger. I didn’t care about the people or the history or....anything that wasn’t anime and manga. Japan was cool to me for what it MADE and I really just made a full stop there.
My first self insert I called my “anime self” and was everything I thought an anime character should be. She didn’t have my hair (choppy bangs, instead, like all those main characters; it was still brown and long, though) and no glasses, either. That wasn’t very anime, to have glasses! (I didn’t like my glasses for a long time; it’s reflected in this.) I didn’t move out of pants, so no fancy frills and lace for me...much less a skirt! But I liked the idea of shoulder-baring tops, so I used those and my other favorite element- wide sleeves- wherever I damn well pleased. Maybe a jacket, if I was feeling cool.
Was I the kid who said “kawaii” and “sugoi” during English conversations? Y e a h. Not proud of that, either. (Thankfully I only did it around weeb friends and on DeviantArt. One might be more permanent than the other, but I’m just glad I didn’t do it to everyone and anyone.)
Over time, though, I realized my behavior wasn’t at all great. I went down the whole “Mary Sue” path, but thankfully never stopped doing self-insert. Positive role models on DA and all that. But what I am pretty grateful for is how it also opened my eyes to Japan, like.....not JUST being anime, manga, cosplay, and Studio Ghibli.
I read up on history more and more. I learned about the culture. What’s considered good and lucky, and what is bad. How there’s more to cuisine than just instant ramen, pocky, and ramune...and oh my GOSH, I still crave okonomiyaki to this day...
Sure, I can’t focus on my language studies (even though I want to so badly [sob]), but I know more words now and better understand how their alphabet works. I can spell Amenominakunshi as well as I can BECAUSE of taking classes and putting in even some effort! (And gosh, nearly everything gets a little easier after learning even that much... The consistency of pronunciation makes me a happy smol, indeed.)
Shinto, as well... I never thought much of it, but funnily enough, it was playing Okami that got me into the full swing of it. How incredible of a religion it is (even if the rest of the world might not acknowledge it as such, despite the fact that uuuuuhhhhh it is) and... I suppose the reverence towards nature that it holds. Shinto stresses the belief that, in all things, there is life. There is kami. We must look out for each other in that way. To help kami is to help ourselves, no matter how that manifests.
Oh, and as well-! How WE are not the source of evil. Humans are innately good and “pure” creatures on our own. We simply face corruption and evil from outside sources, and must cleanse ourselves of them. It’s like hearing a reminder of intrusive thoughts, “It might be your brain, but it’s not you. You are not your intrusive thoughts.” And that’s very freeing. That you can wash yourself of such heavy feelings, breathe them out...and start again.
....But in general, it makes me feel even happier when a storm comes or I see the sunlight spill through the gaps of clouds or through branches... It’s so, so wonderful to me. (Ah, I’d get a kamidana if I didn’t live in the same household as an asshole...) And is now why one of my BIGGEST wants for a future Japan visit is to go to Ise Grand Shrine. So I might visit Amaterasu-omikami herself, in that shrine so dedicated to her, there is no photography allowed past the foot of the staircase up.
It’s something that keeps me going, the hope I can do things like that. Go to Ise Grand Shrine, perhaps attempt to do flower viewing in the spring? Explore the more historical side of Kyoto...and find my favored performers from the area, a band named Juu-Ichi. It would be a great honor to be able to hear them play in person...
As well thanks to Okami, learning the history of the Ainu people. It was my starting point to learning more and the history surrounding them. What the government has tried to do and what they might still pull today or in the future...
.....It’s hard to nail down why Japan’s become such a focus for me and remains that way. Because there’s so many aspects to it I’m sure could likely be found in some other place. Equally rich history and complications and charming shows......but there’s something about Japan that’s become...comforting. That’s the best way I can describe it, anyways. Comforting.
I’m not blind to the bad stuff, either. About the awkward dealings of “gaijin” and how it can help in one way, but hinder in another. The mental health issue that’s still being tackled, continuously, to this day. Not everyone is a kind, understanding person, but... That’s also kind of humanity at large, isn’t it?
I don’t know. Heck, I don’t know if any of this rambling made SENSE, but.... In some weird way, I’m content with it all.
And look forward to the day when I can eventually visit Japan for myself and not only treat that weeb kid a little, but also get to explore and visit all the places I hope to see now, as well.
#Aki speaks#don't ask me what this is bc I don't know#I am just....lost in thought#and listening to some DAMN amazing music

*this is my first post and my first time doing this time of things so please leave constructive criticism instead of hate, thank you!*
how to dress “kawaii”
(i made two moodboards, both with outfit references*)
stuff to stock up on:
tops/graphic tee shirts and sweaters, a few oversized- can range from anime inspired to animal print, peter pan collar shirts, knee high socks, frills/pleats- from blouses to skirts to socks, skirts and dresses- usually frilly the better! but it’s your own style so don’t feel mandated to stick to that, a lot of clothes will look “younger” or childish, so remember that as well when shopping.
how to get the kawaii clothes:
DIY it- find old clothes and just add lace or iron on patches. shop on places like etsy for clothes, h&m also has a few basic necessities, and places like hot topic can be good for cheap accessories.
how to dress the part:
choose clothes that don’t reveal too much. (ex: if u wear a short skirt, pair it with thigh high socks and a chunky sweater!)
learn how to layer: examples: mix and match patterns, wear bright leggings under a dress, pair a white long sleeve with a sleeveless dress.
accessories: just think of cute and childish when looking. get cute fuzzy accessories but most accessories in kawaii fashion are hair accessories. look for cute and unique headbands (like animal ears, pom poms, glitter, etc). BOWS ARE ALSO A MUST! and always keep a bag on you, it can be a plain messenger bag that you add pins and patches to.
how to wear your hair
there are many ways to wear your hair. an two easy and kawaii hairstyles are high pig tails and braids. also, try bangs or a fringe! if u want, color your hair. some classic kawaii colors are pastel/light pink, lavender, or white blonde. also, adding in bows and headbands peice together the look and make it super cute/kawaii.
makeup*
use base makeup sparingly as most of the attention should be on the eyes. use a light amount of foundation and keep blush and such to a minimal. in kawaii style, you want to make ur eyes look very large and round, so make sure to use lots of mascara on the bottom and top lashes. when doing the eye look, try and use light, colorful eyeshadows- avoid a smokey eye tho, as they are seen as sexy and the exact opposite of what you want. if you want/use black eyeliner, put it close to on the eyes but not brought out to a cat eye. you can put pearly eyeshadow underneath your eyes and on your crease or (more recommended) you can put white eyeliner on your lash line.
shoes
your shoes should look very young and childish. you could wear doc martens (especially lighter colored ones, but even the classic black ones work) mary janes, and even sneakers can work. usually, shoes are best paired with cute frilly socks

there are many more styles out there! and lolita is a fashion with a culture, so it is ever evolving!! each style also has its own elements that make it what it is, so more in depth research will also help! there are also cousin styles that stand by lolita, such as ouji (boys style ‘lolita’) or aristocrat (”the elegant mature style”).
another thing important to lolita is coordination of an outfit! that is a bit of a more advance thing to get into for this post, but its term you will find commonly spoken amongst the community, as this applies to all lolitas.
also here are things commonly mistaken for what defines lolita, if visuals help.
disclaimers:
Lolita can be "Japanese Looking", "Kawaii", frills, lacey, with cute socks or cute and/or poofy skirt. It can also be maid outfits, but these are additional elements, not defining elements to lolita!
THIS IS MORE OF AN ARTIST GUIDE TO LOLITA than an actual lolita guide to wearing or coordinating the fashion. It also just goes over beginner basics. You do NOT! Have to follow this guide. I am NOT telling you to, or that you have to, nor am I dictating how things have to be drawn. There could be multiple reasons you dont follow this guide;
Art Style. You want to draw something that is just frills and lace inspired, not a actual lolita fashion. You envision the shape/outfit/clothe/pattern/ect differently for or on your character. You’re drawing something inspired by lolita. Ect..
I am not a professional, (in the sense of professional historian, archiver, fashion expert, ect..) I am tho, a lolita myself. While I have not been as active within the community, I am a lolita who has years of experience with this fashion.
And because of this I wanted to make this post an easy accessible a tool available to others if they would like to use it, nothing of any negative nature. Nor am I claiming to know everything.
I did make this post to help inform what makes lolita, lolita.
I am aware that cordination is a huge keypart to lolit fashion but as stated, i felt it would a bit to much to get into for an art guide to lolita, over a lolita fashion guide.
I am not claiming to know everything despite my experience.
Anyways!!! Thank you so much for reading!!! I’m sure there are typos, but I hope that my message is still clear! Special thanks to kima again who helped with a few thing here and there, otherwise no sources to be added this time a its my own knowledge!
(p.s. a little more on ero lolita - again you should do more research on each style yourself though- ero lolita is still somewhat modest!!! despite it being ‘erotic’, as its only that in comparison to the rest of its sub-style family. it is not just stocking and bloomers with a corset -aka lolita undergarments- it would still have a skirt!)
(p.s.s. i left out casual lolita in my styles because Japanese standards compared to N.A.’s standards of casual lolita differ. also OTT doesnt just have to be for sweet tyles, OTT is just something ‘over the top’)

Introduction
So what is EGL, exactly, and Lolita, more broadly? (the grammar is such a big issue with this fella)
Mana is, for the most part, a gothic lolita. A large section of his clothing line, Moi Même Moitié, is devoted to the gothic lolita style, while the other bit is "elegant gothic aristocrat" (i think). (Great way to start, they don’t even introduce the style properly, not even explain Mana’s long history wit lolita fashion and they don’t have any idea about the brand) A perfect example of the style would be his costume (coord) with the floofy little skirt from the live concert DVD "Bara ni Idorareta Akui to Higeki no Makuake". It's been around for quite some time according to my advisor, but I don't believe it's gotten much attention until recently. (giving opinions into a informative article without knowing shit about the subject matter is okay? no) There are more lolitas than ever now, and I can't help but think it had something to do with Mana. In fact there is now a randomly (four times a year is not randomly) published four-volume magazine called the Gothic & Lolita Bible (I'll be calling it "The Glub") (GLUB) devoted entirely to gothic lolita-ism, that always has a large section dedicated to him and his clothing brand. (lolitaism: the philosophycal movement fonded by mana-sama in which in order to be superior you must have all the burando) It also features drawings by Mihara Mitsukazu* and has recently begun to use other Jrock celebrities to promote the different brands of clothing. Some of the most notable are Kana, Dada, Miyavi, and the Pink Psycho. If you're interested, it's about $16.00 or so at www.fujisan.com.
I guess it's a little hard to define a lolita, (this entire section should have been first). since there is such a wide variety of styles and extremes (you know, the far left and far right are present in the lolita fashion) in the clothing. They range from punk to dolly dresses and everything in between, including punky dolly dresses (this exact phrase made me open a bottle of Rum). Originally, Lolita was the name of a young girl in a book by Vladimir Nabokov . The book is about an older man who falls in love with her, and this is where the term "lolita complex" came from (Rorikon in Japanese). (this is a very akward way to try to distinguish the lolicon from lolita fashion, it feels like the writter tried to just include all the stuff they knew while they were thinking about it.) A lolita complex is used to refer to and older person who has an interest in children. The Japanese took the concept and, as they do with seemingly everything, related it to anime and manga. The lolita (loli, not lolita, even in the old school times they tried to separate the two concepts by calling the sexual lolicon and the fashion gosurori), a cute, innocent, very well endowed little shojou that usually wears skimpy clothes or schoolgirl salior suits, was named for this. In gothic lolita terms it means frills, lace, ribbons, knee undershoes, and poofy skirts in pastel and flowered cloth. (i think they just mixed all the styles alltogether. Pastel colors are from sweet, flower patterns are mostly classic, this is not a old-school vs modern thing even.) Rather than "lolita" in the original sense, its definition is closer to a western princess/french doll look. It really does look a lot like something you might find a porcelain doll wearing. (well, porcelain dolls are usually collected from some decades or centuries ago. If you have ever had some kind of doll you have noticed that people usually dress the dolls with clothing that mimics the fashion of the time, same goes with old french dolls. Lolitas clothes are not doll-like, they have past times inspiration. I know this is a nitpick but i also want to inform people a bit) Being such, it doesn't mean that anyone who likes the lolita style is a pervert. Mana is very careful to inform people that he doesn't have a rorikon. (oh boy, don’t even get started into ddlg and sissies here please) Recently, according to a Hanumaru Cafe special, it's become popular to be either an angel or a demon gothic lolita. As far as I can tell, it just depends on whether the lolita wants to wear black or white. (unrelated anecdote for the win) For more information, see the guid up top.
The gothic part of the lolita goth is, well, gothic (no shit Sherlock). Vampires, black, heavy make-up, middle age European clothes, whatever else a goth is. (The writer does not only have an idea who mana is or lolita is... they don’t even know what gothic is, wow) The two styles combine in different ways. You can get complete doll dresses and then find something gothic at a different store, or something with punkish shredded cloth and bondage undertones. (you guys know how some not-so-short time ago i commented about opening a bottle of Rum? Yes? This two phrases decreased my IQ to the half i had remaining after the drink. I don’t know how this person looked at this and said: “this is totally alright, i absolutely know what the fuck i am talking about. ) Sometimes they're blatantly bondage, I suppose. They also seem to like silly hats and parasols, and were probably into humongous platform shoes until the government banned them because people couldn't drive well in them and were getting into car accidents. (wait what?) Or something like that. Now some of the more bold loli's may carry a doll around. But, as you can see, each brand has its own unique style. Or use to. It is my opinion that they've all been meshing together and there really isn't much variation in any of it; they've been conforming. The prices are outrageous by american standards, and still slightly high by Japanese standards. Maybe $150-$450 for a dress, $125 for a skirt.. ( except that the second hand market and the handmade comm have been a thing since long time ago, handmade being practically the origin of the fashion) Anyhow, back to the glub. I suppose I would consider it a sort of bible, although I've only been to Japan twice so I don't know much about what else is out there. (Welp, there is gosurori, kera and zipper) The interesting thing about it is that it not only provides clothing guides and celebrity interviews, but also a long list of "gothic" products (oh, you mean like almost all the magazines?). They like puppets, angels, and vampires a lot. They're also really into Tim Burton and Edward Gorey*, who they call Edward Golly in the typical Japanese fashion*. I'll add a section on him later since I firmly believe that everyone should at least read "The Dwindling Party" before they expire ^^. That aside, there is always a poem or article of some sort somewhere in the magazine to introduce the whole ideology behind the magazine and clothes. Yup, there's an actual ideology behind it. Surprised, ne? (Holy mother goose, i really do regret to joke that lolitaism was a movement based on a brand hierarchy. This person must think that lolita has its own political party or something like that. What do they promise? That AP will start to do dresses that are wearable to people with human anatomy? or that VW or Excentric will come back from the dead?) I don't know if everyone really follows it though. Last time they had a street shot of a lolita who probably had no idea what Jrock was; she liked Ayumi for goodness sake. She was probably wearing the dress because it was "kawaii" (cute), a word that the silly shojou pop-culture followers seem to idolize, but which is only fine when used in moderation. Truthfully, they are cute ^^ but you have to be prepared when you first see one or it's a little creepy. (Judging people from the street snaps from their tastes and also mixing weeb culture with japanese vocabulary is now a thing)
They refer to the style as "youfuku", or western clothes. But they're really not, since very few westerners ever wear anything like that, and if they do they've gotten it from Japan. (I did a quick google search and found that the therm is used for whatever garment that doesn’t follow the japanese traditional clothing line; things like jeans, blouses, jackets.. all of them enter in the category. So, yeah, this is wrong) The Japanese tend to blame wierd things on the west, even if they're almost completely unrelated. (unrelated to the subject) The words they've borrowed from English are interesting because they show the same thing.
Welp guys, this is all for this text. Just gotta say that this persons writting is atrocious even for me (being english my third language. I hope some of you survived to the experience or didn`t give up into psychoactive substances.
