She's lamenting that everyone who cared about her & protected her is gone, but at least destiny sent him to her. While we and ML know that he's at least partially responsible for her mom and nanny ending up dead. (the nanny wasn't skewered by his guys but if he'd let them in the gates, no one would have been kidnapped by bandits)

Princess #2 is taking over the brothel and turning it into a restaurant-front, backend bandit hideway. Of course she's ego bound to prove to Ruo Wen she can handle this business.

idk though... guys... The more I think about it, I just don't know how this is gonna work out. I could be very off-base on this, but I have the feeling that on some level she's too... 'mainstream' for Ruo Wen's lifestyle. She was up for the wild spring break times (adventure! excitement! no rules!) but sometimes I think there might end up a rude awakening between how she thinks this is gonna play out and Bandit Leader's plans. Like in this case, she's turning a brothel into a restaurant and releasing the girls from being sex workers. And she wants to send the madam to prison instead of the bandits' instinct just to kill her. None of that is very Desert Rankers, formerly of The Dead Zone. Is this gang actually going to go "straight"? Can 2ML truly withstand a leash? And if they don't, how long is she going to be able to vibe with it?

(This isn't a criticism of her subplot - the unpredictability of how this storyline will play out is what makes it interesting.)

Ruo Wen lying on a bed in the royal mansion, right under Loser Lord's nose, and ruminating on FL and if she'll truly come with him willingly or was just bluffing

But he is simply not made for thinking or playing indoor housecat - he's reactionary & impulsive, so he makes some sort of decision and bounds off the bed to stop the fake chef games

He rips off the mask and terrorizes Other Concubine for a while. Serve me, dance for me, do as I say or I'll scar you and you can be my wife. The usual. (I presume, as a powerplay to feel in control again).

i talked previously on how i just love thinking about the paths characters are and what it means about their character or story and nothing makes it more obvious than going "of course, what else but erudition" at jade, realizing I forgot to even register what path firefly is but going "uuuh, destruction. what else could she be" and just checking for confirmation.

so i guess i'll loosely define what personality traits i personally think each path represents (very very loosely bc it really does depend on the character and there's a wide spectrum for interpretation. i'll put some examples). and right away i'll tell you i do not have harmony figured out. it's the hardest path. like, i'll try, but i am not confident.

also i'll say this, none of these "personality traits" are inherently good or bad. like for erudition i used the word "manipulator" bc i have no other word i can put down but i dont meant it in a bad way. jing yuan manipulates people all the time but it's generally for the greater good.

destruction: pretty literal. linked to destructive behavior (hook) or destruction of others and/or the self (blade/firefly). dan heng IL is so neat because technically he is so non-confrontational and doesn't Want to be destructive but it's his past self that carries it over. like, he can't escape it, it still haunts him and that is why his true path is destruction. delicious, right? also destruction of bonds (unwillingness to reconnect with jing yuan etc.) clara is the hardest to interpret but if you got a big robot with you that fires lasers then idk what to tell you

erudition: chess players, manipulators, "genius/smart". do i need examples? it's so self explanatory. easiest path to interpret for real. i think argenti is the weirdest one to be erudition, but we also dont know much about him yet and i think he's plenty smart and manipulative just. in a very eccentric way?

hunt: "has a goal to follow" in the simplest terms. very narrowed in on that goal. stubborn. (yanqing wants to get stronger, dan heng wants to be free/escape his past etc. etc.)

nihility: disconnected from people or the world around them. (in different ways. welt is from a different dimension and guinaifen works mainly online but both disconnects them from the people around them. which doesnt mean they cant form bonds or care about people)

preservation: very simple and obvious but a protector type. "by the book" (doesn't cheat). upfront. (you'd think aventurine would be the outlier but i maintain that he's more honest than people expect him to be and he hates cheating. so he plays by the rules even if he bends them and he HAS a protective instinct. i personally actually think march is the outlier here who's a bit hard to pin down but what can you expect from a girl who doesnt even really know herself)

abundance: researcher type. fascinated with humanity in one way or another. (so so hard to pin them down but i think this fits broadly, at least for now, even for gallagher. may change the more abundance characters we get. dont mention huo huo, Please, she's like a harmony/abundance hybrid anyways. and she IS fascinated with humanity ok, fascinated how confident her coworkers are anyways)

harmony: bro please, idk. look at the characters we have and tell me what they have in common. i'm dying i'm in the desert and i have no water. i WOULD have said administrators/bureaucrats who are willing to take on responsibility but then sparkle happened so i don't know anymore. also she's playing a character so what do we REALLY know about her. how about "puts their all into things". "commits"(to the bit). that feels vaguely right.

so anyways this is what i have so far. i've thought more about some than others, obviously, i have my favorite characters, but i think this can at least for now broadly apply.

Book of the Week: The Daily Life of the Reborn Adopted Son of a Wealthy Family

Author: Brass Revolver (黄铜左轮)

Genre: rebirth, business, danmei

Rating: M for depictions of mental illness

My Synopsis: After the torturous existence of the second half of his first life, reborn Chen Wengang, miraculously, isn’t looking for revenge or to salvage his reputation. Instead, he just wants to find the love of his life who died early in his first life so that they can live the kind of bliss they were prevented from achieving due to others’ machinations. Huo Niansheng, despite remembering none of this, is completely on board, if only his little cousin/Chen Wengang’s adopted sister would stop cockblocking… What, a playboy can’t find genuine love?

My Review: I love Chen Wengang like I love Wei Wuxian, so I will say just like I say with mdzs: he should have killed (more) people. I understand this isn't a revenge plot because Chen Wengang chooses to focus on the people he actually cares about and has already emotionally divorced himself from everyone else, but too many people were on their bullshit for too long. Thank god for Huo Niansheng. I really love how their relationship develops and how steadfast and unconditional Huo Niansheng is in his support of Chen Wengang in both lives. That man deserves an award from the creator, themself, for his service in this novel. Zheng Yucheng,on the other hand, has a special place reserved for him in hell beneath the devil’s feet where the fires never cool 🤗

With that, some content warnings are also in order: this novel is heavy on discussing mental illness, particularly Chen Wengang's panic disorder, and disabilities. They are very realistic depictions (lol at me almost sending myself into a panic attack reading about his panic attack) along with society's reactions to them. Therefore, there is a lot of ableist conversations and beliefs pushed forth by side characters that the narrative and the main couple work through. But this, like mdzs, is a realistic novel in that none of those things get solved on a societal level.

The translation is mostly ok. Some paragraphs repeat, and in what particularly memorable chapter, an entire scene is copy-pasted for some reason, but it's manageable. There's also a character where the translation cycles through 5 different surnames, which is a little amusing. Much less amusing is how around the 70-chapter mark, the name fuck-ups get real egregious, so much so that you have to actively pay attention to what characters are saying/doing in order to tell who is who, since the translation mixes up names and misspells some. It does calm down after that (doesn’t stop completely, tho), so idk, maybe that was just a bad week for them.

Anon, I'd personally say Huo huo! She's one of the best healers in the game and supports are just generally more useful in the long run. And just invest in her for the simple fact that she's a healer, you're in dire need for more!! 💀

I also have both Boothill and Lunae, both of which are good DPS characters and worth pulling, but if I were in your shoes, I'd go for Huo Huo.

I also haven't used Lunae in ages, despite him being fully built and level 80.... He's just sitting on a bench, rotting away in favor of Jing Yuan, Blade, Jingliu, Argenti and now Boothill.

What's Huo Qinwen's relationship with her children? (Specifically MC but I'd love to see how she is with the other siblings too) is she cold and strict or caring and doting towards them? Or does she have a favorite that she especially dotes on and a least favorite that she pays less attention to?

OH and does the MC get to choose how they feel towards mother dearest/choose their dynamic (if you will) or is their relationship set in stone?

I addressed this briefly in the Side Characters page, but I'd be glad to expand on it!

As for being able to pick how MC feels towards their mother, I'm debating whether or not to include it. It wouldn't really amount to much since she'd treat you the same, even if you didn't like her, so if I do include it, it'd be for flavor text only and not make much of a difference!

Consort Huo Qinwen's relationship with her children is all positive. As mentioned in the Side Characters page, she dotes on her children quite a bit, more than what's expected of a consort, anyways. She doesn't really have favorites among her children, but she does recognize that the younger ones need more attention than the older ones.

Nan Shuailu

Consort Huo's relationship with her first child and eldest son is as good as it can be. Second Prince Nan Shuailu is kept very busy as the heir's heir, meaning he doesn't see his mother too much anymore. He's also 25 years old, so he doesn't need his mother to baby him. That said, Consort Huo will still baby him. It doesn't really matter if he's 5 or 25, he's still her baby. In return, he actively works the court and its officials in her favor, which pisses Consort Xing off quite a bit.

Consort Huo also caused quite a bit of a fuss when Shuailu was born, since she refused to hand him to a wet nurse at first, which was customary for consorts. She was eventually convinced to hand him to a wet nurse, but it ended up working in her favor in the end since he refused to nurse from anyone but her.

MC

Consort Huo's relationship with her second child is also good. MC still stays with their mother in her palace at the start of the story, so they see her quite a bit. She tries to arrange 1-on-1 time with them, knowing that most of her attention goes to the younger children than her older ones. She's supportive of everything MC decides to do and actively tries to show interest, even if it's out of her wheelhouse.

Nan Liangxu

Consort Huo's relationship with her third child is great. Seventh/Eighth Princess Nan Liangxu is only 8 years old, so she still requires her mother's attention. She enjoys doting on her daughter, buying her various dolls and stuffed toys for her never-ending collection as well as helping her get ready in the morning. Liangxu adores her mother in turn, often picking weeds flowers for her, since she's too young to do much. When she has time, Consort Huo also enjoys playing with her daughter.

Nan Qiongkuai

Consort Huo's relationship with her fourth child is also great. Tenth/Eleventh Prince Nan Qiongkuai is 2 years old, so he takes up much of her time. He's a very energetic and happy toddler, wanting to be carried quite a bit. He's still learning basics like numbers and colors, which she helps with when available. He spends most of his time around her with his nannies. He is also currently being weened off of milk, much to his displeasure. He still doesn't like being too far from her either, throwing tantrums when she has things to do that don't involve him. Like with Liangxu, Consort Huo will also play with him when she has the time.

Tbh being a luoshifen is not easy. As marvelous an actor as he is, many of his dramas can be a struggle to get through for every other reason besides him.

To start: not a drama but do watch PhantaCity to see him dance!

The one drama I usually rec to friends is Love is Sweet - but only if you are OK with modern romcoms. (the second cp is eehhh and the plot is silly and super fluffy but he and Bai Lu are amazing.) I think it's still only on iqiyi.

Princess Silver is pretty good, but it's really long and he's barely in it even though billed as 3rd male lead. So also recommended, but know there's a looooong dry spell in the middle with no xixi 😔. His character is super tragic so bring tissues. I think it's on yt.

He's beautiful in And the Winner is Love but overall the drama is... not good. It can (should) be watched at 2x and just slow down for his scenes. Tragically some of his scenes were cut even though he was the ml, which I am still salty about.

I'll go out on a limb and say Fox in the Screen (or Screen Foxes depending on who you ask） 萍里护 is worth checking out if you're super curious. It's a cheap web drama and very cheesy, but it's what got him the gig as Runyu in ashes of love.

One of his first roles was playing the younger version of Wallace Huo's character in My Sunshine - so he's only in the middle flashback part but it's pretty good and on Netflix (in the US at least). (I only watched his part but it was a popular drama).

Instead of any other of his dramas I heartily recommend Mr. Mossie which is a...cultural?variety?idk what to call it show that he did - the LuoYunxi fanclub on youtube has subbed most of them except the last season for some reason.

Hear me out: he created the world he transmigrated to and managed to not get caught for spying on his sect. He worked for MBJ and CQ (at the same time) becoming the most trusted advisor of one and a peak lord in the other. While he didn't remember EVERYTHING from his novel, it was a literal life time before. He's a mental swiss army knife, jack of all trades. He's not the best at anything, SJ and SY are definitely smarter, LBH is for sure super clever, but SQH is able to keep up with them. (And not get murdered! Way to go Airplane!) 

Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan) from The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System

He literally learned how to be a peak lord of the scholarly peak within months, even though his loveable unreliable narrator self makes it unclear how much knowledge he got from the original goods (cultivation and muscle memory are in tact to some degree, at least)

Textual evidence: “ As Shen Qingqiu had, since his arrival, been furiously reviewing various manuals, he had also recently seen a description of it.”(ch1) where he recalls a specific technique and uses it in the moment. “Shen Qingqiu had no say in any of it. As such, he had diligently trained for numerous days, single-mindedly seeking to make his abilities second nature…” (ch 1) yeah so this goes into the having to relearn everything category.

He’s also a walking monster/PIDW encyclopedia. I think his most impressive memory feat [spoiler] is navigating the Holy Mausoleum’s traps better than Tianlang-Jun. note that at this point it’s been years since he read the original book, the Mausoleum is very large, and yet he’s familiar with all the main rooms he encounters, and it’s been years since he read PIDW (the source book). He uses this knowledge to escape/outsmart Tianlang-jun.

Any intelligence he has is made up for by his loss of IQ points around the protagonist, though. And his general obliviousness to those around him.

Submission: He is the schemer of all time. Schemes within schemes within schemes. Incredibly clever and an excellent manipulator. He is everything.

Wen Kexing from Faraway Wanderers / TYK

Submission: 

Saw that someone submitted him without propaganda so here I am with propaganda! Wen Kexing is pretty much responsible for all of the plot stuff happening in Tian Ya Ke. At the same time, he does absolutely Nothing for the duration of the novel for his massive-scale revenge scheme to work out. And that's because he set it up so brilliantly that he didn't need to lift a finger for his enemies to deliver themselves up on a silver platter.  It was genuinely a domino fall: he only created the inciting incident, and then the pieces slowly but surely fell into place. Except the pieces were people, and if any SINGLE one of them decided they didn't want the Lapis Armor - the treasure Wen Kexing baited them with - then Wen Kexing's scheme would just fizzle out on its own. BUT. None of them could give up the pursuit of power. None of them could be satisfied with what they already had. And Wen Kexing perfectly understood those people's psychology and built his scheme based on that.  He really created this poetic justice situation where his enemies walked themselves to their deaths on their own, and only because they wouldn't stop doing the things that he wanted to take revenge for in the first place. Moreover, he set it up in such a way that he didn't need to commit attrocities while in 'the human world', and instead let his enemies expose themselves by 'not conducting themselves like human beings'. Wen Kexing only started killing when his enemies entered his world, the Ghost Valley. So it was not just poetic, it was also theater-level dramatic! Moreover, his scheme worked so perfectly that when Wen Kexing left partway through the final battle, one of his enemies actually finished up everyone else FOR HIM. And while Wen Kexing baited everyone with Lapis Armor, he also ensured that his father's promise to 'not let it fall into wrong hands' is kept - by destroying the key to it prior to kicking off his scheme. So ultimately, even if Wen Kexing died, his revenge would still be completed, AND the last man standing would receive a big fat Nothing for all the murder and plotting they did. And this is just about his revenge plot. He also sussed out a literal spymaster's true identity within like 11 chapters! Not to mention the whole, 'tricked a bunch of crazy murderers into thinking he was even more insane than them', which he did at age 9 (NINE!). Oh, he also staged a perfect coup within three years or less, somewhere between ages 18-21. And ruled over the Ghost Valley for 8 years when no other Valley Master before him lasted longer than 3.  Tl;dr: A LITERAL EVIL MASTERMIND! AND WE LOVE HIM FOR THAT!

OMG Chuchu, after everything you’ve seen and went through, you’re still far too trusting and naïve. T_T She’s just like, “Yeah, sure, I’ll go into the forest with this shady-looking stranger because he claims to have seen Li Sheng!” Like, girl, no! sigh Well, since this is based on a YA novel, nothing truly bad will happen to her of course as Feng Wuyan desperately wants to get through the forest.

Yin Pei is not happy about all of this! He now wants to intervene pretending to be someone else. Uh how will he hide his face? A mask? Again?

Feng Wuyan notices that Chuchu actually doesn't know how to navigate the forest. he's pissed and leaves. Chuchu is so optimistic that she goes into the potentially deadly forest anyway. Okay then.

Awww A-Fei and Mu Xiaoqiao are still bonding! A-Fei also has noticed that MXQ’s powers are declining, that his martial arts style is harming him. But she also manages to make him laugh. They’re so cute!

Ah. I always forget the huge hats with the long fabric draped over them. So, Yin Pei has a hat for concealing his face. He helps Chuchu, who indeed is lost, and she yet again trusts this weird mysterious person who showed up out of nowhere. It’s almost dark now, too. Seems she was running around in that forest for a while. After helping Chuchu, Yin Pei meets Feng Wuyan (who doesn’t recognise him) who tells him about Li Sheng. Now Yin Pei is pissed and helps FWY through the forest as well – I guess because he wants him to kill Li Sheng? Because.. he wants Chuchu for himself? IDK.

DRAMA! Li Sheng and Feng Wuyan fight, FWY basically wins but demands that Li Sheng tell him the secret formations that Chongxiao taught him. Li Sheng refuses. Chuchu vanishes basically during this conversation, IDK, I guess she… fled to seek help? IDK. Anyway FWY has a deep crisis, thinking about his past and how he is the heir of Qi School but was too arrogant and fucked up, and now the Qi School is basically dead and some rando is the last one to know its secrets… This does things to a man, I imagine. Li Sheng is like, “Bummer. Guess I have to console him now.”

A-Fei and Mu Xiaoqiao make a pact: He’ll help her get the lotus and she’ll give him the seal of the Huo family later, after she’s done with the shit she’s doing. They then go to trick that Disha guy still waiting out in the snow for them. A-Fei can finally get the lotus, thank heaven.

Back to Li Sheng, who notices a reference to the HTYS in the fly-whisk while he’s still kinda bonding with FWY? And then Disha arrive, because of course they do! They found Chuchu outside in the forest and somehow found the way to the temple.

Gu Tianxian and Feng Wuyan fight over the fly-whisk, but Chuchu can trick them and get it. She is hurt in the process, though, oh no! :(

Let’s check in on Li Yan: She recites the poem from the map fearing that she might forget it. Like… write it down, perhaps? It had been written down before…?

A-Fei and Mu Xiaoqiao part ways at the foot of the mountains where both their horses very nicely have waited for them, however long they actually sat on that mountain. MXQ says he trusts her to keep her word (or else!).

Chuchu is hurt badly it seems and Li Sheng tries to bring her to Madame Nichang, who has retired to… somewhere.

OMG I’d forgotten about this asshole! Yu Wenzhi, advisor to the Emperor (I think, something like that) shows up at Disha Manor to annoy Hu Tianying. He’s pissed that Disha has messed up so much and the HTYS is still lost and especially that Xie Yun is not dead. We learn that he put his trust in her after she murdered Li Zheng, poisoned Xie Yun and destroyed Big Medicine Valley. Wow, that woman sure had a busy schedule.

Gu Tianxian is back home from the Qi School again and is immediately sent to look for the HTYS again by Shen Tianshu. I guess this is just for us to know that he got out of there and is now running around again to likely happen upon any of the teenagers…

A-Fei brings the lotus to Penglai and faints from exhaustion. When she wakes, she’s told that Xie Yun is better but that he is now in seclusion. She’s sad about it but wants to also go immediately to look for the third important plant that they’ll need. It’s in the south, close to Little Medicine Valley and she thinks that Yang Jin or Ying Hecong might be able to help her.

We end with Shen Tianshu and Hu Tianying. She tells him that he's still too hurt and he wonders if everything he's done so far was just a waste of time. Oh the sadness. (┬┬﹏┬┬)

Ooooohhhh anon this is a good one! We're doing some HuoXie (is that their ship name? idk) from their COLLEGE YEARS bc i am personally a big fan of the headcanon that they both studied abroad in germany and dated. >:)

Wu Xie has never been angelic. He's too rough for that, a bite in his eyes that scares Huo Daofu sometimes; it's the promise of some sort of future mischief, of adventure. If your friend jumped off a bridge, would you? For Wu Xie, the answer is obviously yes. He's the middle between paradise and damnation; not purgatory, but earth, exhilaration and longing and pain and pleasure.

Right now, though, lounging on Huo Daofu's tiny dorm bed, one leg crooked up, holding a novel in one hand and flipping through it with the other, eyes half-lidded and careful, he seems something like heaven.

Huo Daofu puts his pencil down. He's been scratching away at chemistry equations for the past three hours; it's exam week, and he's drowning in an ocean of his own undertaking. Medical school is difficult. Wu Xie's architecture degree is envious.

"You're looking," Wu Xie says, not taking his eyes off of the page.

"How would you know?" Huo Dafou asks.

"I can sense your eyes," Wu Xie says, which is probably only half-true; the other half means that Wu Xie's been looking back.

Huo Daofu puts his head down on the table, groans. "I hate chemistry."

"You hate chemistry in German," Wu Xie corrects, turning yet another page, and honestly Huo Daofu isn't even sure that he's actually reading the book anymore.

"Da," Huo Daofu agrees, because that is the truth. He's so much smarter in Mandarin.

Wu Xie finally puts the book down, and Huo Daofu watches him stretch, his image turned horizontal. He gets off the bed and comes over to Huo Daofu at the desk, lean, supple fingers massaging his shoulders.

"Ooh, you're tight," he murmurs, and Huo Daofu sputters.

"Do you have to say it like that?"

"Like what?" Wu Xie asks innocently, but the bend at the corner of his lips is anything but.

"Menace," Huo Daofu says, but his shoulders are starting to loosen up, and that does feel very nice. "Mm."

"You're exhausted," Wu Xie says, and if Huo Daofu didn't know any better, he'd swear that that was concern in Wu Xie's voice. "Look at you. You can barely keep your eyes open. When was the last time you slept?"

"A while," Huo Daofu says vaguely, because he doesn't know himself. "I don't know."

"You should sleep," Wu Xie tells him, and yes, Wu Xie, thank you. Huo Daofu is the medical student here. "It's not good for you to go too long without rest."

"I know," Huo Daofu mumbles.

"You get cranky," Wu Xie continues.

"I kno—what?"

"Got you," Wu Xie says, voice lilting with the upturn of his mouth, and then he leans forward, kisses the back of Huo Daofu's neck. Huo Daofu shivers.

"Stop," he says, "I have to study."

"No," Wu Xie says, "You have to go to bed."

"It's finals week."

"Yes, and I'm very lonely," Wu Xie sighs. "I've been so good, keeping myself occupied, but you've been neglecting me, A-Fu."

"Don't call me that."

"Your name?"

"Your name," Huo Daofu says. "The one you gave me. I haven't claimed that one at all."

"Do we ever claim ownership of our names?" Wu Xie muses. "Unless we choose them for ourselves. Like Xiao Hua. He's very protective of that."

"Understandable," Huo Daofu says. "He didn't get a choice the first time around."

"True," Wu Xie says. He drapes himself over Huo Daofu's back, sighs into his hair. "Please? Pay attention to me for once?"

"You're so annoying," Huo Daofu mutters, picking up his pencil again and trying to make an effort to look as though he's going to get back to work. "Leave me alone."

"Oh, you wouldn't want that," Wu Xie says into his ear. "Your life would be so boring without me."

"It would be safer," Huo Daofu says.

"Oh, no doubt." Wu Xie does not seem insulted by the insinuation that he is the cause of all the troubles in Huo Daofu's life, which he is (though he's also the cause of most of his elation). "But where would be the fun in that."

Huo Daofu, internally, accepts that he will no longer be getting any work done, and shuts his pencil into his textbook. Wu Xie gives a little thrill on top of him, and Huo Daofu turns in his chair so that he can look up at him.

"You want me to rest?" he asks, challenges.

Wu Xie's eyes are hungry, the flicker of a forest fire. "Yes."

"Alright," Huo Daofu says. "Then you'd better exhaust me."

Wu Xie is all too happy to oblige.
