Before reading the comics, thanks to sladixk fics, i genuinely thought that dick always lost to slade, now I know that most times when he's and adult he beats slade no problem but it got me wondering how you feel about this canon-fanon difference

OHH this is a good question!!

i think sometimes fanon makes Slade a little... too badass. i think something some fanon fans don't understand about Slade in the 80s/90s is that he was like... kind of a loser? like don't get me wrong he was a main villain of the Titans for a while and he was certainly meant to be a formidable villain but this reputation he has in fanon almost supersedes him. (for example with specific plots: the fandom interpretation of the Judas Contract is Slade as the mastermind, but the writers have said that Terra was supposed to be the big villain manipulating everything. which is a ridiculous thing to put on a teenage girl getting groomed but, it does depict the intention of who was supposed to be "at fault" in that story) and don't get me wrong, i definitely love playing up the reputation and aura Slade has, but he really is a general contract killer on the level of like, Deadshot. personally, i wouldn't even put him on Lady Shiva's level, i think she far outranks him.

and to be fair to some fanon, recent comics have... tried to badass-ify Slade. some of his more recent Deathstroke runs are really trying to put him as this guy with legions of men underneath him who's this *deadly* killer who can take on Batman and Superman and all the like. and i just find that... boring? like, do i enjoy him being a smarter-than-average villain with a lot of connections? yes. but i don't think anything in his backstory really lends him to being as formidable as he appears in some fanfiction that puts him on this untouchable level. i would personally go as far to say i think *most* of the Batfamily could beat him in a fight under the right circumstances. bc Slade really is just Some Guy who got a serum from the military and went AWOL. (there's certainly more to his backstory than that, but at a glance, he's really not a trained fighter from birth like other characters are) and whilst i do enjoy Slade being formidable i have to admit, it was sort of fun when he was a loser? and i've gotten a kick out of certain comics that point out he's only a terrifying villain when he's up against teenagers. (Ghost-Maker calling him out on that is one of the funniest things, to me) like could Slade give Batman a serious fight? sure, but i don't see him ever winning unless you *really* nerf Bruce. and i really don't see him ever winning against most of the Batkids once they've got some years under their belt. Slade's scare factor was always tapered by who he was against, and he was a *Teen Titans* villain. so he's a little ridiculous and sometimes just sort of a weird loser. and i say that affectionately.

furthermore, on the flipside, i think... sometimes, we woobify Dick a bit too much to my tastes. or, really any Robin who gets shipped with Slade but of course Dick is the standout in popularity and i find it's more prominent with him. it's really a general slash problem, in which one man must be the Strong Top and then other must be the Weak Bottom. and that manifests in Slade being physically larger than Dick (which in canon, ehhh i think the size difference would be largely negligible) and him being able to beat Dick. bc it makes for more fanfic scenarios where you can put Dick at Slade's mercy for porn, for angst, for whatever you'd like. Slade is a good pick if you want to really put Dick on the weaker side, bc you can play with healing factors and strength enhancements. so on a physical level, Slade will be stronger than Dick. does that mean Slade can beat Dick in a fight? historically, no. i mean, Slade trusted Dick to train his own daughter in the Renegade storyline, so i think this is a fact even Slade is aware of.

i don't think it's a bad thing fanfiction likes its big top/small bottom tropes. if you want to make Dick a submissive, pliant bottom who is going to lose in a fight to Slade for your dead dove porn, get it. i've probably written or will write the same. it's appealing and it's a very common trope for Dick. but it becoming the fandom norm does sort of nerf Dick, occasionally. i think some fans don't fully comprehend the actual level Dick is on, where he's very close to being an equal to Bruce, if not already Bruce's equal. in fandom Dick is sort of trapped in this "post-adolescence but not full adulthood" state that does not acknowledge he has been an adult running superhero teams for years. he was filling in for Bruce in the Batman mantle all the way back in the 90s. he can defeat villains like Slade, and usually without a lot of difficulty. to me the only time you can realistically make Dick lose and it be "in character" is either 1, to have Dick *very* early on in his Robin years (i think if he's past 16, he can beat Slade) or 2, very deeply wound Dick/have him in a psychologically altered state via drugs or something. otherwise yeah, i think Dick wins 99% of the time.

but fanfiction is fanfiction, and it doesn't *have* to be canon. esp if Dick losing to Slade is just a sexy prerequisite to porn. do i wish more fanon explored Slade as kind of a loser? absolutely. do i think Slade is *too* cool in most fanon? also absolutely. but those are my tastes and i don't begrudge anyone who just wants a strong, mean man to whump the shit out of their blorbos, which usually, is the purpose of Slade. i find most fanfic with Slade tends not to be exploring Slade's character. they're simply using him as an easy stand-in for a metahuman who's morally grey and very mean but has a nuanced history with Dick, or whoever else. which, very valid. not all fanfic needs to be a character study, but i do think it'd be cool to see more Slade-centric fics that *do* want to be character studies.

ok so, here’s the long answer to your first question 😭 as you’ve probably noticed i am a black writer and make it my purpose to write for readers who look like me. the mouthwashing fandom is still so new and i haven’t really seen any black reader stories for curly (or really anyone) except for @grimmsbride who i’ve seen writing for curly and daisuke (check them out!).

because i still want an audience to cater to (and i don’t know what demographic i’m actually pulling from my fics), i would say yes and yes to your question about curly’s mom in good luck, captain. i could definitely see her being prejudice to reader if they’re poc and is most definitely a toxic boy mom. whatever the case is for you, she’ll never really see you as the best fit for her son.

as for jimmy, i’ve mentioned he grew up with curly in happy birthday, jolene. she just sees him as another son just based on shared history and proximity. he’s family.

i haven’t thought much about curly’s dad and just now realized i probably should have included him and his reaction to the tuplar crash in best wishes, curly. i feel that curly really favors his father and i hinted in dream of fish that his mom doesn’t really like that. as it’s been previously mentioned, he lives in australia and had most of the custody over curly. i imagine him as a really chill dude who’s really really funny and charming and likes to explore. he’d probably get remarried to someone who shares his humor and sense of adventure. when reader and curly are dating, she’s only spoken to mr. curly a few times over facetime or skype. but he likes you and accepts you as his son loves you tons. he let curly propose to you in his home.

i would say that during the events of best wishes, curly, he didn’t come visit you in person as it was hard for him to handle the loss of his son but he did call from time to time. even when curly came back, it was still tough for him to see his son but he still maintains a relationship with him.

curly respects his mom but there is a limit to their relationship. he did go to school in australia and came to stay with her on breaks - he didn’t get to see her all the time and as he grew, he tries to maintain a healthy and balanced relationship with her. he got closer to her when he decided to go to college in the united states and she really takes advantage of their proximity. i wouldn’t say she’s grooming him. she left a marriage that she felt wasn’t perfect and would lonve to be involved in curly’s decisions when it comes to who he’s in love with. sometimes she’ll suggest the daughters of her friends from work or church bc she thinks they’ll fit in her idea of what curly’s family and future should look like.

over time, i feel that she would be jealous of reader bc she got the family that mrs. former curly wanted.

mr. curly and mrs. former curly just fell out of their rhythm. they were high school sweethearts and had the perfect white picket fence life and it just didn’t work out one day. after countless arguments, curly’s dad decided to file for divorce and mrs. former curly signed them in a heartbeat. obvs curly was confused and heart broken as his parents did a good job hiding their issues and he couldn’t fathom why they would separate. having to go back and forth between continents was stressful at first but it became a routine for him.

Developed a few Smurfs today.

Starting with Alchemist! He saw Firefly for the first time and was like “yoo were you involved in a lab accident too?” Smooth way to start a friendship /lh

He's slightly terrified of Bubble. Learned his lesson. Genuinely does find Firefly sweet though and introduces her to the wonders of chemistry - wouldn’t you know it look at these other cool glow in the dark things! Manages to invent the worlds first glow sticks for her.

I’m envisioning Alchemist as a sort of awkward guy. Maybe on the introverted side, means well but constantly has his foot in his mouth and is insecure about the lasting effects from that one potion.

Wants to do cool magic like Papa and Sorcerer and thinks he's good at it but the thing is. Alchemist is actually just good at natural chemistry. He thinks he's throwing in magic ingredients but congrats u somehow found uranium. Er, most of his experiments are more harmless than that. If he ever discovered his real talent he'd be a fine fine chemist but he insists on the al part not realising. Its cool though. He's still discovered plenty of interesting science experiments.

Decided to revamp Yukio a bit. Originally he was supposed to be a non next gen next gen but .... yeah. Explorer is a little tsundere but. He DOES like Spelunker. The ship is kinda based on an old fave TTTE of mine with a similar dynamic jfsekjf Explorer is like “lmao easy pickings Im gonna crush this guy’s heart” and then somehow keeps coming back and its like? Why tho its just some guy who’s obsessed with caves a bit too much I can literally charm and buy my way into anyone else’s life and Archie is like “Spelunker dude we’re friends I’m telling you Explorer is a morally corrupt piece of trash what do you see in him he’s probably cheating on you he’s shifty and has commitment issues” and Spelunker is like “we have a shared farm on Stardew Valley called Strawberry Gorge :)” Yukio. Fine. That's his son now. He got a man and family suck on that Yorkshireboy.

So now I got Alchemist/Firefly, Explorer/Spelunker, lets go 3 for 3 and introduce my final - Bubble/Mouse

Mouse is wearing glasses the next day. Then Bubble sees her and she hides them in her pocket again. Its gonna be a slow process until somesmurf invents contacts /lh. But its a start.

what the fuck kinda ending was that???

a filler season with no true plots that tie everything together. barely see nadja and laszlo being kinky spouses. no colin subplots between the main plots of each episode. nandor and guillermo are "just friends" and nandor supposedly has a crush on the guide. we barely see the guide and she never really gets the validation and acceptance she's been craving from the group for so long. we don't see guillermo and nadja interact apart from that weird finance bro side quest. laszlo's dad appears in one episode but does nothing. we don't see the baron, the sire and the rest of their little family. there's that nowhere subplot of another vampire that existed among them decades ago but only appears in this season and has nothing to do besides forget that he and colin were friends, be a sort of rival to nandor in the affection of the guide, and try to take over the world, then die? laszlo makes his own frankenstein monster and despite being there in the house he almost has nothing to do besides two episodes. there was that weird episode where a cop tv show was filming in their street.

we don't see them run around town in their usual locations getting into hijinks with humans. no night market, no clubs, no vampire council. we don't see much of sean and charmaine. nandor and guillermo didn't admit their feelings for one another and have gay sex in nandor's coffin. like what is going on? none of these characters felt like themselves and their dynamics were so off, especially with the additional characters. no laszlo and nadja moments, laszlo and colin moments, colin and guillermo moments, nandor and nadja moments, nadja and the guide moments, the guide and colin moments. we don't see nadja's doll self at all except in the background, and she doesn't interact with guillermo, colin or the guide.

i'm so sad. i hardly laughed once this season and this was supposed to be the finale. and instead it just feels like a half-baked filler season between 3 and 4. none of these beloved characters get a proper send-off nor are their arcs concluded in any meaningful way. i don't understand how the show was able to end on its own terms and yet drop the ball with the stories it had been building for years.

i understand if they wrote the season that way because they didn't want it to feel like the end, keeping in line with the documentary aspect and how their lives will continue off-camera. but it felt so forced and rushed. it felt like a cop out. all of that build-up into the relationships of the characters and their growth as individuals and the questions of what they'll do next just thrown out the window. granted, season 4 and 5 weren't the best and showed signs of decline in focus on what the show was about, but they were still funny and they still focused on the characters and tried new things to explore the lore of the vampires.

now i know how game of thrones fans felt.

I‘ve been thinking about which Batboy would make the most sense to be the Baby daddy and to be honest I have no clue.

I think in a way it could all fit and make sense really.

For instance:

Dick has always tried to have some sort of connection with Routine!Reader, an perhaps it was never really in a sibling way because of the distance between them both.

Jason and Routine!Reader weren’t even raised at the same time within the manor, and by the time they met properly she was already past the age of wanting any connections.

Tim already had pre-existing obsessive tendencies surrounding her, from what I can tell, and probably has had the most interactions with her due to their similarities.

But I’d love to know what you think! I really loved your response to my previous ask about these three being romantic yanderes in this fic because I think there’s so much potential that should be explored by writers because, to a point, some of these platonic fics just seem so repetitive. Let’s change up the dynamics a bit y’know?

Now let's get into the romantic potential of the batboys.

Now first of all, as Rountine! reader did not grow up anywhere near the three boys(because one was busy, one was dead and the other was doing his own thing until the actual moment they meet) or she was just at the time where she couldn't give a damn.

Dick, as you said, couldn't really grow close to the reader due to not spending time with her when they were younger. However, when he was trying to be better and be close to the growing family, routine!reader just didn't want to be near him. She did not look annoyed, nor did she look angry, she just looked at him like he was nothing. In the past when Routine Reader was at a family dinner(which she didn't want to be there) Dick would try to talk to her, but she gave him nothing. Now thinking about how dick actually realizes it is a whole new battle. I like to believe that he would realize what his feeling is while he's trying to sleep and all he can think of is Routine! reader's cold face staring at him.

Now as I said many times before, Jason was dead when she was brought in. But they meet after his vengeance arc, at the manor library. Now reader and Jason were neutral with each other at first because Reader at that point had the mindset of "if they don't care about me, I don't care about them" and Jason just wanted the new books that Alfred told him about, but that didn't mean he didn't stop and stare. Now after feeding Jason some extra pork chops you had cooked, that's when the feelings started to show. Jason, to put it lightly, is a fucked up guy. Who wouldn't be after what he went through? And fucked up guys, do fucked up things. For example, he wouldn't leave you alone unless you cooked him something, and even if you still didn't cook for him, he would stare at you, no matter what you were doing. Jason's feelings for Rountine! reader aren't normal romantic, but I like to think that one of the main components in his feelings towards reader is how reader cooks. On the very rare occasion when Jason gets reader to cook for him, as he watches them cook, it kinda heals him? Does that make sense? Like he's just sitting there waiting to be fed, and it just feels normal and quiet.

Tim's obsession with the reader came from wanting to research reader and how she thinks. Basically like a lab rat. And you are right when you said she had more of an interaction with him. As both of them during their early teen years, grew up together in the manor. But it wouldn't be until maybe a year after he became Robin that he met Rountine!reader in the kitchen. As time passes on, the more private research Tim has done about the reader. Which is a very small folder of nearly nothing. Besides her full name, date of birth, a list of friends, and other small things, that was pretty much it. Every so often if he has the time, he tries to find something new about Routine! reader, which is nearly impossible she doesn't even have any social media accounts. Tim sees Rontine!reader as a perfect puzzle, and he want figure out how she ticks.

posted a buncha rambling about this on my other blog but i want to be very brave and try to post about it here. warning it's very yappy, i'm not in a good headspace and i esp wasn't last night. but i want to talk about it anyway

this month i started a new little project/interactive game type stuff. it started because i was struggling to write cj and I was in the mood for dark fantasy (turns out that's my niche, i just start TYPING AWAY when it's that). it kind of spiraled and now i'm 120k deep

I don’t have a name for this project, I am very bad at naming things. But the premise/setting is a grimdark fantasy esque world. And there’s this type of magic that is actually more like a parasitic disease.

I really love the idea of magic as something that represents mental illness. And writing surrealism, dreams, memory issues, etc is my fave.

Combining it with a dream I had a long time ago of a world where they used children in war, this type of magic can be learned by anyone but they have to “survive” the initial sickness. And children are more resilient to surviving.

Because magic becomes a useful commodity in society (military, industrial, labor) there is an incentive to have a lot of magic users. So you end up with a society exposing children to a dangerous, not well understood phenomenon in order to shape them into something useful. A lot of children die or suffer very severe side effects that permanently alter their mind or body

That’s the setting, though. The main plot is more concerned with other stuff.

I just like world building fantasy stuff.

I wrote two origins the player can pick but one is sort of shelved until I can figure out the family situation. That one is the noble background and has deeply fucked family dynamics and I’m stuck on 1) did I make this too fucked up 2) I want to use character sprites because I’m an artist(tm) but if they’re related to the protag, how do I make it inclusive

The other one is you’re an orphan sent to a nice orphanage that’s really there to produce magic users. This one has the most content for now, since orphan means no family members I gotta worry about. further background customization would include having beef with the church, evil magic... stuff. this is called the scholar origin

Then there's the main story after all the origins (i want the origins to be kind of lengthy so they can deeply effect all the stuff on the main story, since there are lot of choices within those origins to shape your character) and I started writing it in a sort of episodic way or "arcs". The first arc is in the mountains with a necromancer.

I'm trying VERY HARD to not include complicated mechanics, I just looove coding so much. But I did include some exploring and stats/skills that are chosen in the beginning and can later be influenced... can't help it! 🥲

other stuff:

I kinda wrote in-universe misogyny . Maybe it’s wrong of me but I like settings that include that. Again kinda makes it hard for player options... also i know that's not everyone's jam but i'm writing for myself since I have no plans on making a commercial product

In the scholar origin, you get close friend, your mentor, a knight, and a priest. You can choose a variety of interactions with the, dynamics, etc

If you play female, the knight might be creepy to you. Otherwise he’s actually very likable and cool. I thought that could emphasize the reality of those situations If that makes sense (the predators/creeps in people's lives appearing as Just A Chill Guy To Everyone Else) Your childhood friend has potential to be an incel-like guy, a rival, or truly your closest friend depending on the choices. And the mentor is a major character to the main story and his dynamic with the player is variable. I put in so many options and branching stories, that's really what ended up making the word count when I started writing the script lol. Idk how to put a percentage on it but most of the background/origins are done and i'm midway into the first arc.

I haven't designed any visuals yet, I'm super focused on writing. WILD since i am an artist, you'd think that's what i go to first. But I get stuck in my head too much when making A Public Thing and not just my personal ocs so I'm constantly worried about the designs being palatable. I got to 120k now. It's impressive from an output number but i feel like game itself is barely any content... there's just A LOT of player reactivity. that's my fave thing in any rpg and i always crave more, so that was a leading factor in writing.

I know you dont talk much about ships or romantic relationships, but about utmv is there a ships or ships that you like? If yes, which ones?

I’ve recently found myself in a period where I don’t care much for romance (or at least, i don’t like when romance or sex is prioritized), but there are a few ships i enjoy or im chill with even if i myself don’t ship them or seek them out.

The most obvious one is Colorkiller, of course. I do love to explore every interpretation and dynamic with them, but I love when they aren’t like, “friends to lovers” but instead friends and lovers.

And I do believe these two could potentially be portrayed as just about anything, and they’re definitely a little fruity even if it’s genuinely platonic—given how it’s kinda implied that killer likes to tease and flirt with color, and other things that color wants to be done only in certain environments and places. There’s not much other ship content with Color, but I feel id enjoy exploring or seeing it just about any kind. Such as with Delta, in a poly relationship with Delta and Killer, in a poly with the MTT, etc. maybe I’d even be interested in seeing some type of depiction of colormare or even a poly between color, killer, and nightmare if it’s interesting and compelling.

I’m neutral or apathetic on most other Killer ships, except for a few interpretations of ships that can get annoying. I don’t really ship Killer with most characters, but I can try to get behind a certain interpretation. I’d like to see more HorrorKiller content, if only because there’s so little of it.

The only one’s im ever iffy with shipping him with the apple twins, and sorta with swap—swap because killer has hurt him pretty bad in his own dubiously canon, and I feel that the trauma Killer caused both Swap and Dream should be meaningfully addressed before a relationship even begins.

Swap and Dream don’t deserve to live in fear that their partner would hurt them again. (Or if you’re intending to go with a toxic or abusive dynamic, then to depict it with care.)

I’ve heard of the idea of i think Insomnia? Error x Ink x Dream? Where, for Ink, it’s a QPR—he does not have romantic feelings for either Dream or Error, even if they do have them for him and eachother, and everyone knows and is aware of this and it’s chill. I’m not hugely invested in it, but the idea seemed interesting.

I find Drink, Dreamberry, Stars poly, and Cream a little cute on the surface; but i haven’t really seen much content with these ships or how they’re commonly portrayed to have big feelings or opinions about them.

I think Crepic is cute, and that one ship between them and Killer (especially if colors there too), cute. I’m not a big fan of romantic kross, certainly prefer signanothername’s interpretation of them, but it’s chill.

I find that one potential post talking about killer with fell also very interesting.

And i guess that’s maybe it? I don’t really ship too much. I much prefer either found family, genuine rivals or enemies (no to lovers), platonic friendships and qprs, or even fwbs is interesting, or other things of those nature.

Oh! Also, I feel like Killer’s crush on Toriel as Sans has potential. Even if it was only a crush and they weren’t ever officially together, when and how and why did sans grow a crush on her, and how did it feel when not even her or his own brother could keep sans hoping that things would change or that they could be saved. Did Toriel offer some sort of comfort or solace when he was losing his mind? What was it like to kill her for the first time? Was that the first time he ever actually saw her face, no door between them?

1- Sangihun,Jibyeok and 457 are ships that are just pure yaoi and yuri fantasy. In my eyes, Sang-Woo and Gi-Hun are doomed friends who got brutally hit by a tragic ending. Gi-Hun and Frontman are enemies who are different sides of the same coin (enemeies that have paralles but choosed different paths).I can't say certain thing about Sae-Byeok and Ji-Yeong but they are purely platonic to me (wish their dynamic were explored more tho).

2- Dae-Ho lied about being marine is a bullshit (Dae-Ho my boi get behind me!)

3- Jung-Bae and Jun-Ho are underrated as hell (and Jung-Bae deserves better than what he's got from the fandom)

4- Frontman being jealous of everyone breathing down Gi-Hun or other jokes about 457 is getting old as Optimus and Megatron divorced and made it everyone's problem.

1. A lot of the people in these notes are confused as to why 457 or inhun is so popular and I want to give my quick n short thoughts on it. I personally belive it's a hold over from S1. One of the most popular ships was sangwoo x gi hun. While sangwoo obviously isn't as bad as in-ho he was still a very toxic character all things considered. My point is, I think the thousands of toxic yaoi shippers that shipped 218 x 456 just migrated and latched onto 001 x 456 lmao.

2. This is just an echo in here but JUNG BAE IS UNDERRATED AS FUCK WHYYYY??? He so charismatic and he's an echo of S1 Gi-hun you would think people would really dig him. IDK I did.

3. Genuinely shocked in ho is popular they way he is. Not to be confused with him being popular in the first place. I get him BEING popular. They way he is popular tho... is odd. Thanos had the fandom response I thought Inho was going to reccive. Instead, seeing sooo many people being sympathetic and justifying his POV was... interesting to say the least.

4. I don't think all inhun shippers are the same and i have my own delulu ships. So when I say thier mental gymnastics are crazy I'm referring to a specific group. Those who try to ship them realistically are rare. In ho has an unhealthy obsession with gi hun that much is clear. But seeing so many trying to justify that obsession as romantic instrest rather than a cold manipulator who desperately wants to be right is comical. You need to insert a lot of imagination to make this ship sail.

5. I'm outing myself with this bias buuuut. I'm so shocked Jung bae x gi hun is practically nonexistent??? Gi hun was so protective over jung bae from the moment he saw him🥺. The way Jung-bae was able to cheer him up to acting like his older self. Jung bae at the start was cowardly but still chose certain death to fight with and protect Gi-hun. They have a past. Jung's last name was to signify him being Gi hun's "bae". OMG WHY DID SO FEW SEE THE VISON?!?!?

Anyway, I don't agree at all with what you're saying. Sang-woo isn't a toxic character; he was manipulative, but because he was forced to be. And Sangihun was never as popular as Inhun is, although it had every right to be.

Hard agree on Jung-bae. I don't know why he isn't more popular, idk what to tell you. Maybe his fans are less vocal and talk about him less than the fans of In-ho, for example. To be hones, I'm a Jung-bae fan and don't talk about him that much, so I'm guilty of this too.

Unfortunately, people tend to do that with attractive characters. They tend to justify him and excuse him too much, I find him an extremely interesting and well written character but I don't think what he's done is justifiable. I don't think he has much possibility for redemption either.

A little Riara scene analysis from the show. Ever notice how Rafe’s s3 boat that kiara pushes him off is labelled “cat and the fiddle”. Why would he name his boat that? Either he’s a big fan of the hey diddle diddle rhyme or it’s intentional. I know the Pates usually lack imagination but I’m going with the latter as in one frame you can see the words clearly with both of them standing opposite one another. To me it’s obvious foreshadowing she’ll betray him but also the writers were clearly trying to make an intentional connection with another scene later in s3 where Rafe has a conversation with Topper about how Sarah’s “playing [him] like a fiddle” and how he can’t trust her because she thinks she’s a pogue now. Remember how he talked about liking Kie as he thinks of her as half kook despite her thinking she’s a pogue and how he can’t trust the others but would help her, only for her to betray him thus play him like a fiddle. 

Considering how he brings up Barbados to Kiara twice in s4 it’s obvious Rafe is talking about Kiara under the guise of Sarah to Topper in that scene as he’s parroted his own thoughts on her in the rant. Anyway all this is a lil funny as it prompts Topper to find Sarah who’s with John B leading to him burning down the chateau almost killing the pogues. We may still have the chateau if he invested in a diary.

That’s crazy and I’ve never noticed that! I personally find that the best stuff you can write are the things that are totally accidental but in retrospect makes so much sense and gives you pause. The way that so many of the canon Riara scenes are the best “hey! wait a fucking minute..” moments should be reason enough for the writers to explore this dynamic and see where they can take it because the world truly is their oyster. It’d be idiotic to ignore this because even if they don’t want to go in a romantic hand-holding, getting some ice cream type of way, there limitless ways of interpreting Riara that would still be (if not more) compelling.

Re: this scene in particular. I think it highlights my thoughts about the Rafe/Kiara power dynamics in which she has the upper hand and he’s not as terrifying as she thinks he is. Okay but caveat, I think the writers did a major overhaul of their characters from the end (and honestly the mid-point of) season 2 to season 3 and 4 so I’m not sure why this shift happened but it is what it is. In season 1 Rafe 100% had the power in this dynamic, and so we got those uncomfortable scenes between them that were charged with this palpable energy— good and bad— with Kiara trying her hardest to establish some power. This continues with season 2 when he tries to drown her because he’s all tweaked out and truly does not give a fuck about anyone he hurts in his path to protect his family. Honestly the both of them were so reckless and desperate to preserve their relationship with their friends/family this season they should’ve just duked it out one on one. Lots in common and need to get physical.

Then in season 3 he sees her as an equal and I found that way too sudden despite them being kidnapped together. It wasn’t like Kiara was actively being kind and helping him out, maybe his sense of trust is so skewed that Kiara doing the bare minimum made him put her on a pedestal in his mind (which is so sad and so painfully typical of Rafe). At this point he doesn’t see her as a Pogue and calls her at least “half kook”, a compliment of the highest order from him and a big departure of him in season 1 yelling for JJ to “tell Kiara she’s pretty hot for a Pogue”. The change in his language has always interested me and I wish we got to see more of the shift from season 2 to 3 instead of giving us a fuckass montage scene and everyone acting kinda OOC (I have unadulterated beef with season 3 and 4, I’ll probably make a post about it). Because I’m wondering what happened from him being on that ship with his father to him transitioning into the man of the house— did he make amends in his head and promise a new way forward? HOW did this shift happen? Mind you the very last time we saw Rafe and Kiara was when he had that bazooka pointed that the little boat the Pogues were taking. You could see the hesitation in his eyes and the regret he would feel but then we pick up in season 3 and he’s just a suave guy. Ugh.

In any case, her being physically violent isn’t what was needed for Kiara to have power over Rafe in season 3 this is unlike how Kiara believes is necessary to be on equal footing with him because Rafe has power over her with the potential of physical violence. It’s more like soft power vs hard power, the slight extension of her empathy and trust toward him did more to level her with him than if she punched him in the teeth (I think that also would’ve been effective tbh, he’s a complete masochist. This violence is the reason he respects Barry and keeps going back to him as someone he can trust). To him he’s baring the softest part of himself out there and she isn’t digging her nails into it and butchering him for it, that extension of apathy is what he takes to be empathy— and power over him. This shift is invisible to everyone but Rafe, he truly thinks that Kiara is aware of her power now and can’t imagine her using it to betray him since 1. She’s a good person and 2. He’s not using his violence to hurt her.

Kiara, bless her, doesn’t see it that way— power is power to her and ultimately a physical manifestation over someone, so Rafe being a violent person and knowing that side to him makes her apprehensive but also brave enough to betray him first before he can betray her. It really doesn’t occur to her the possibility that he’s being honest. He isn’t a good person according to her, willing to save her but not her friends but in his eyes this is the kindest thing he can do— show mercy on her, show her that she’s special to him, that she’s the exception (it’s what he wants).

So when she pulls the rug from under him, he’s shocked because he truly didn’t see it coming. “The cat and the fiddle”. It’s probably worse and way more confusing to him because she didn’t hit him back or make him bleed, she embarrassed him and betrayed him so peacefully that it was even more offensive and difficult to comprehend. And the worst part for Kiara is that she has to swallow the fact that Rafe does not come after her, that he’s changed and she believed the worst in him and left him for dead. That in this case, she was the bad guy and betrayed him and he has every right to be evil and take it out on her but he doesn’t. If the roles were reversed, Kiara would’ve hated Rafe until the end of time. This makes for a fun conversation in season 5 hehe.

With that I wonder if in the final season we’ll have a call back to this but maybe this time Rafe will be the one to betray them? Maybe he’s on edge and doesn’t know his place in the group and believes they’ll cast him out once he’s not of service, just like how everyone else did. Then I could see Kiara apologizing to him and giving him the clarity he needs about his development and potential.

Okay I went on a tangent but thank you for sharing your analysis of this scene! Things like this make it so cool to think about their potential because the writers can look back and put the puzzle pieces together to shock the audience in a good way, one where they can go “oh wow I didn’t see that coming but looking back, how the fuck didn’t I see that coming? there were hints!” and not in a way “wtf is this fan service they’re throwing together at us?”. You summed it up beautifully and I have nothing clever to add, what a cool analysis that I will be thinking about from now on.

Also lmao at the Topper bit at the end, I miss the Chateau. Anything Poguelandia adjacent makes me gag, sorrryyyyy

DW LUCKY DAY SPOILERS!

OKAY! I actually really liked this episode. I'm gonna talk about what I didn't like first, and then what I did.

So first things first, the tone at the beginning was a little weird. Idk how to describe it, but it was just a bit off for some reason. And the vibes kinda switched halfway through, to the deeper and darker vibes of the second half. Of course, my insane ability to rationalize anything if I try hard enough is telling me that's because it's meant to be like that; Conrad seemed like a nice guy before he revealed his true nature, much the same as the episode felt happier before showing it's true nature. Also, Conrad is a piece of shit and I hate him. I think his character could've been a bit better, maybe more developed, but honestly I just hate the guy so idc

Things I liked! Which there are actually a lot of! I should put a disclaimer here for those unaware, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart is one of my favorite Doctor Who characters of all time, despite her sometimes minor role. But she was a bad bitch this episode! Like yes girl, be okay with killing that piece of shit in order to secure your funding!! Yess!!! Love her to death. Her *thing* with that guy is pissing me off, but other than that I really liked her in this episode. I'm a lesbian Kate truther, so y'know whatever. Her dynamic with Ruby melted my heart. (I am a sucker for found-family dynamics, we know this). And Shirley's comment at the end about Ruby collecting moms is so true and I think Ruby could do with a few more. As a treat.

I really loved getting to see Ruby on her own again. Of course, we have 73 yards, but Lucky Day felt different because it's over a smaller span of time, so we get to see more of her day-to-day life without the Doctor. She is still plenty capable without him, but you can really see the toll her travels are taking on her. I really liked how this episode was an exploration of what happens to companions after they're left behind. Ik Ruby chose to leave, but still. Like, the trauma, the paranoia, everything, I just loved it. I feel like although the fandom thinks about it, the show doesn't touch on how travelling with the Doctor affects the companions after they've left the Tardis, and this felt like a good exploration of that.

And btw the Doctor's scene at the end was FANTASTIC. I love that he's still looking after Ruby, even after they've parted ways. She's still his friend, and he's not going to let some piece of shit get out of this without a heavy warning. I also think it was a good glimpse into what 15 might be like when he loses his temper. I want to see him just fucking lose it this season, I want to see him angry. I think this was a good little peek at what that might be like.

Also what the fuck is Mrs. Flood's deal. Like seriously. What the fuck is happening. I need to know,.

Overall, this episode continues the trend (for me) of fucking LOVING this season. I am EXTREMELY hyped for next week's episode, but I actually really enjoyed Lucky Day! Feel free to let me know what y'all think, I'd love to hear it.

“The Search” Rewrites, Book 4: Air, Leaks, and A Call for Help from the Fandom

I’ve talked a little about the Book 4: Air restoration project @book4air. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out! Three full episodes are already out and episode 4 is going to cover Zuko’s early days right after his banishment, exploring his relationship with Iroh and the world as Zuko understands it as a lost boy rapidly coming into manhood.

Wait until you hear the VA’s performance with music and everything! It’ll break your heart.

But I want to talk a little bit about what comes after these next few episodes: our adaptation of “The Search”.

If you’ve seen our adaptation of “The Promise”, you’ll know it was quite faithful. This won’t be the case for “The Search”. For the purposes of the overarching story we are telling, this story is getting overhauled. (Please still support the original release if you’d like to see the canon version).

The biggest change that’s been announced is the addition of Toph. The team felt that a story about family, identity, and faces could benefit from including Toph’s perspective as she comes from a unique but toxic family situation, has a strong conflict between the performance expected of her versus who she really is, and is completely blind and so faces don’t even register for her.

But I want to talk a little bit about what we are changing about Zuko and Azula’s roles in the story. While the set up is virtually unchanged, there is one small alteration that makes a big difference.

(Sorry for the poor quality, this is technically unreleased content and I’m being kinda risky leaking it.)

Ursa’s letters are now a diary. This means that rather than get random flashbacks, the narrative framing now becomes Zuko and Azula reading these entries together. As a result, they get to discuss their discoveries about their family, and even share each other’s perspectives.

What that means is that when things like Zuko dangling Azula over the cliff happen, now we actually are forced to address it. The characters have to talk about how they treat each other and the reasons why. They have to confront the toxic family dynamic they’ve been forced and groomed into since childhood. Zuko has to realize his mentally ill little sister isn’t the monster here and in fact he’s the one with all the power now, and Azula has to realize that Zuko can be trusted if she can let go of her fear long enough to talk to him about her vulnerabilities.

We also address issues like this:

Many people criticize this for being OOC, but I think there’s a way this could easily not be. Sokka has been known to be juvenile and reactionary as a first response, the difference is that he always eventually apologizes and learns from his mistakes. Without even needing to be asked.

Threatening a mentally ill person who has just been removed from an asylum—even as a joke—is not okay. It would be questionable even if they’d been friends before this, but considering their prior relationship it really does seem like an boneheaded lack of awareness or compassion for how triggering this could be.

So rather than remove this interaction, we addressed it. And I am really taking a risk posting this here, but here is a brand new script page:

Sokka isn’t just comic relief. Sokka is smart, Sokka is compassionate, Sokka is brave, and Sokka knows when it’s time to apologize and reach out versus when it’s time to fight.

Safe to say, there are several things that stay the same and we tried to keep faithful to the spirit of the story, but there’s a lot we wanted to do for the Gaang and for the Fire Sibs, and I hope you’ll join us on this adventure, whether you’re a diehard fan of the comics and just looking for a fun AU, or you hate the comics and would like a rewrite, or even if you’ve never read them and would just love to return to the world of ATLA.

my favs to draw are pirplexa and shirley for some reason. pirplexa because she's like a weird son to me (i'm very attached to her! shes like my favorite oc ever! i went off when i designed her!) + shirley because ever since i changed her hair style shes been a lot easier+more fun to draw. i think also carni i love drawing her w different hair styles and clothing.

my favorites to write for are pirplexa/carni/prince. that makes sense cuz theyre like. the Main protagonists+villain, but its really fun to explore their different personalities/backstories. Dude writing backstories especially for pirplexa and prince is so fun for me. also recently writing xio has been really fun n interesting to me. in general i think its fun to explore Why A Character is like That, why do they behave like that!

i got a lot of dynamics i like exploring but my favs are carni/pirplexa, carni/trill, prince/shirley, prince/xio and babs/miles. for carni dynamics its fun because she's one of the more happy/chipper characters, contrasted with pirplexa being more cold/untrusting and trill being more calm and collected. i plan for carni and trill to really dislike eachother at first, but eventually start to understand and fall for eachother <3 while with carni and pirplexa its more about pirplexa learning to trust and make friends again.

prince and shirley are siblings with extremely different world views and thought processes, they really dislike eachother. they grew up in the same enviroment yet reacted to it completely differently.

prince and xio is fun to me, ive been trying to give xio more of involved in the story+cast&crew while prince just thinks of her as his cute secretary. he sucks real bad! she doesnt like him she barely tolerates the others but he pays her to kill people so shes like whatever i can deal with this. and then she finds out he wants a consensual workplace relationship and shes like YAY HOW CAN I MANIPULATE THIS MAN!!!!!!!!!!!

babs/miles are dating at the beginning of cc, but their relationship gets a bit complicated due to babs being a little crazy about him and miles struggling with his sense of masculinity, its really not a relationship thats meant to last for long, its a bit tragic. (also why they are in love by david byrne is in both of their playlists LOL)

a few fun facts:

i dont think ive shared here is that prince and shirleys parents were movie stars! they met on the set of a film and had multiple movies with eachother. prince and shirley both had an odd childhood under a lot of surveillance from the public, plus their parents weren't very great parents. they both react to their trauma very differently, prince being "grateful" for it, giving him media training and feeling like his parents crafted him (even when he knows his parents didn't have much faith in him and bet a lot on shirley), while shirley absolutely despises the rest of her family. of course she'll go to the annual family dinner with prince, but that doesnt mean that she won't loathe every second of it.

pirplexa is a dog person! he loves dogs! he doesn't own one because he doesnt think hes in the right headspace to have one yet, but he will pet every random dog on the street. i like to think a few years after the events of cc when he's mentally better, he does adopt a dog.

miles and shirley don't get along very well, shirleys kinda like a bully older sister, she puts him in headlocks and stuff.

shirley likes to write, babs likes to sing, miles likes to draw and design.

Villain Mistin au

Where Mistin was ‘convinced’ to stay as a villain by their ex girlfriend, somehow making it to the point they’re both Fiancé’s. However Ray seeing them on the street after years of searching, he decided to make his move.

His plan was simple, they can fall for him or Binary Star… but one problem… they’re fiancé didn’t seemed to like this, and not in a, “don’t steal my future partner” for example… it seemed more predatory, as if they were going to try everything they can to convince and control Mistin, not to get with him.

It clicked, she wasn’t just using them… they were also trying to get into Mistin’s older brothers good graces. He was known to have a healing ability… but as much as they’re brother can heal…. He can also hurt…. And kill…. They’re brothers ability was unclear in how it works to Ray, the NAHA is still pondering whether it’s a good idea to find and capture alive or kill on site.

However Ray’s problems were not connected with the NAHA, it was with Mistin’s ‘fiancé’ and how they’re practically brainwashed into thinking they love her. So the new plan was to get them out as soon as possible… out of the relationship, out of the soon to be ‘special day’ even if it seems wrong, he won’t stand by while they see Mistin look miserable without knowing they’re miserable.

Getting to know them is easy, growing closer to… however, taking off the red tinted glasses? Not so much.

Will Mistin be able to take off those glasses and see the signs in front of them? Or will they simply cut Ray off for they’re future ‘Partner’?

We’ll probably never know….

And that’s all the details I think I’ve shared for this lol! Anyway I’m kinda interested in others oc’s villain au’s I wanted mine to be kinda slow burn, yet like super reasonable as to why Mistin doesn’t just get up and leave. Because I did mention before they’re ex girlfriend was very manipulative and controlling, she even resorts to violence if she sees she’s not going to get her way… in this au, they’re more ‘convincing’ than ever, she still resorts to some kind of violence if not given her way, however I believe that is enough you want to hear about her.

Depends if when i finally get the Ao3 writing done, I might consider making it. It might go more in depth with my characters and possibly mention more upon what relationship Mistin and their ex have from then to now. It will include a toxic relationship, an unhealthy dynamic between her and them. Maybe even exploring more family lore behind Mistin.

dead boy detectives season 2 (and possibly season 3..) predictions

ok i know that dbda has not even confirmed a season 2,,,, but a girl can dream. So here's all the things i want to see in this hypothetical season 2:

Finding Niko!! there are a lot of speculations that she didnt actually die and was saved by sprites (due to that lucky charm the walrus man gave her). And i hope this is true!! And if it is, i'd like to see they boys, crystal and possibly jenny getting wind that shes not alive and go on a rescue mission,, meanwhile niko is experiencing supernatural shenagians of her own.

Speaking of Jenny,,, more of her please. Love our goth butcher lesbian father figure and i want to see more of her. Also i want her and the night nurse to fuck. it would be so good. i literally ship them so much and they've barely interacted lmaoo.

I want charles and the cat king to have a one night stand. I dont care how it happens i just want it to happen. And i want charles to find out and get jealous :)))

Justice for monty!! I kinda hc that he tries and to break free from Esther's control and finds his own place. Maybe he calls on the cat king for help.
