You stepped out onto the asphalt with a smile. Another weekend, another race, another day in your perfect job. Well, maybe not perfect. Oscar Piastri, aka Judgy Mcjudgy Pants was somehow still in the paddock and somehow still getting on your nerves. Anyways, Thursday meant media day, which meant you got onto the track early, usually with some of the F2 or F1 Academy drivers for an early morning cycle. By early, it really meant early. 5am start, and since it was Austin, spectators were already filtering in. Running beside you today was none other than Judgy Mcjudgy Pants himself, Oscar Piastri.

“So JMcJP,” you started as your cycle began. “How are you feeling about this weekend?”

He chuckled at the nickname, then answered with a simple ‘good’. You rolled your eyes. You had never been able to get good answers from him, no matter what. He’d always be too busy giggling like a schoolboy to answer your questions, so you saved the shitty ones for him.

“Descriptive,” you deadpanned. “Now, since we at SkySportF1 are so nice, we decided to bring someone special in to interview you!”

“Not just because you don’t want to do it?” he smirked.

“Everyone welcome Logan Sargeant!” you ignored his snarky comment and turned to Logan, who appeared beside you as you cycled. You handed him over the mic and cue cards and just focused on your ride, off-camera. The track was a little over 5 kilometres, so it wouldn't be a long interview.

“So Oscar,” Logan cleared his throat. “Anyone special in your life at the moment? Other than your debilitating crush on our lovely F1 presenter Y/n Y/l/n?”

Oscar’s face dropped and he stopped cycling. “This isn’t live right?”

“It’s not, don’t worry,” Jordan, your camera operator, explained with an apologetic smile on her face.

“Thank God,” he cheered, relieved. “Logan you asshole!” Oscar pushed into him, with a smile, but pushing all the same.

“What? You need to confess eventually?!” Logan scodlded, somehow staying on his bike.

“Not right now though, I was making good progress!”

“What, you could get through 3 whole words without giggling, or are you up to 4?” Logan mocked.

“I am a grown man-”

“Maybe I’d believe you if you just had the balls to ask her out.”

“You two are so slow, hurry up!” you called from about two hundred metres in front of them. “Alright, next question!” Logan moved on, cycling onwards again. “Who’s your best friend on the track?”

“Well I would say you but you’ve left us for Indycar, so… probably Lando, Alex, or Zhou,” he nodded.

“And why is that?”

“Lando and I are teammates, Alex and you were teammates so I saw you two together a lot, and Zhou and I were in F2 together,” he shrugged.

Logan’s eyes widened at the next question. “Who’s your favourite SkyF1 presenter?”

Oscar sighed, but told the truth anyway. “Y/n, probably.”

“I hope you’re not talking bad about me!” you shouted back at them, even further ahead now.

“Only good things!” Logan shouted back with a smile as Oscar fell deeper into his embarrassment. “Alright Oscar, who would you choose as your date to the prize-giving gala at the end of the year?”

Oscar sighed again, knowing what he was subjecting himself to. “Probably Y/n.”

Logan laughed as Oscar sighed, and an awful idea popped into his head. He turned to the camera with a big smile, and said. “If Oscar wins today we should make Y/n go as your date for the gala.”

Oscar’s face filled with dread but he knew how much Sky liked to torture their hosts, so he knew they’d love the idea. You? Not so much. In a selfish way, he was pretty happy that Logan had said it, because it gave him a chance with you. A whole night with you to himself? Sounded perfect to him. All he had to do was win the race.

“Y/n! We have an idea!” Logan shouted to you. “If Oscar wins today you have to go as his date to the prize-giving ceremony at the end of the year!”

You groaned as you reached the starting/ finish line again. “Do I have to?” you looked to Ted Kravtiz, technically he was your boss. He smirked and nodded, and you started hoping that Oscar wouldn’t win today. “Sounds like a deal,” you said, unenthused.

Logan cheered as Oscar’s sense of dread deepened, and he started to feel bad that they were forcing you to spend time with him. This couldn’t just be about the shoes, right? You had to hate him for another reason. It’s just… you never dropped the facade, in front of him anyway. You were always mildly irritated with him (except when he won his first race), and if you weren’t mildly irritated, you were completely. The cameras cut, Logan started chatting with you as Oscar stood there, catastrophizing even more.

You watched as Oscar essentially left the room, though he was standing right there. You’d never seen him get like that, he was always so calm and so collected, and it was almost worrying to see him be anything else. After a few minutes he left without a word to either of you, and you started fearing the worst. Maybe you’d brought this JMcJP thing too far, maybe he hated you, maybe you should go talk to him.

୨ৎ⋅୨ৎ⋅୨ৎ⋅୨ৎ⋅୨ৎ⋅୨ৎ⋅୨ৎ After a few interviews, you found yourself walking around the McLaren motorhome trying to find Oscar. Eventually, you found his driver’s room and knocked on the door hesitantly. “Oscar?”

It swung open and you were met with a very confused looking Oscar who pulled you into his room and shut the door behind you two. He put the back of his hand against your forehead, seemingly… checking for a temperature?

“Are you feeling alright?” he asked. “You never call me Oscar.”

You rolled your eyes at his awful excuse for a joke, and sighed. “Y’know I did come in here to apologise, but I don’t think I’m going to do that now-”

You turned for the door but he grabbed your hand and pulled you back. He raised an eyebrow. “What would you be apologising for?”

“Logan this morning, you don’t have to use me as your date for the prize-giving ceremony, use your girlfriend-”

“Don’t have one,” he answered quickly. “And I need to win, right?”

“Right,” you smiled. “But seriously, don’t ever feel pressured to like… do what Ted says. Or be around me, I know we don’t always get along, but it is all in good fun, right?”

He nodded, all too happy that he could finally get through a conversation without giggling. “Right.”

“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow then,” you smiled, going for the door handle but once again, he pulled you back.

“You don’t just dislike me because of the shoes, right?” he asked.

You chuckled. “What would you say if I don’t dislike you, but I am still hurt over the shoes?”

He rolled his eyes. “Oh good,” he chuckled. “And how can I pay my penance for that?”

You thought about it for a moment, then smirked. “Winning today would be pretty helpful, I wouldn't have to think about a date then.” He smirked and nodded, finally letting go of you and letting you leave the room.

Here is the sneak peak to what you have to look forward to once I hit 2K followers! Before we get into the goodies I want to take a second to thank each of you so much for bringing this blog to life and reading and interacting with my stories! you whisper out five words you’d been feeling for awhile now, “i’m scared of losing you,” closing your eyes ready for oscar to say you’ve already lost him, “i’m scared too.” his voice matches your vulnerability.

opening your eyes looking at him in shock, “you are?” you felt like you were both taking a big step in admitting this. maybe, just maybe this would help in repairing your relationship.

“i am. i think we’ve been selfish towards each other but we also haven’t communicated right. i should have asked you more about how the job was treating you-,”

“i should have asked you how the team had been treating you.” you counter back and he chuckles.

“i know you want to be independent when it comes to your career. but i think you should quit that job and focus on school only. i know you don’t want me to take care of you financially but just let me do that for now until you graduate and find a job that will value the skills you have. i can’t lose us. i can’t lose you, yn. i love you.” his words filled with nothing but love, oscar meant well and for once you decide to take him up on the offer he’d been giving you since you started dating two years ago.

“okay.” a simple word replacing your frown into a smile on each others faces. there was work to do on your communication with each other but for now you both got to breathe a sigh of relief after facing a fear that would no longer happen.

I have no idea if this is a skill issue or not, but I genuinely struggle to conceptualize drivers at other teams. I think it's because usually one move is contingent on another, so it's a bit of an intricate web. Anyways:

As with all things in this sport, there's so many variables. Lando seems much less likely to leave McLaren due to the sunk cost of it all (already been there for so long, it's his team, he gets preference periodically, etc.), but there are reasons he may leave. The team's inability to make and stand by good decisions regarding their talented drivers, for one (I'm still in shock over the lack of strategic foresight in Hungary). Their pit wall situation is a massive deterrent, and now that Lando knows he can win, that may become a deciding factor.

Oscar may choose to leave because he wants to avoid being someone like Carlos -- a strong driver that never has a team built entirely around him, perceived as second fiddle only by nature of getting to the team after his teammate.

But, should McLaren learn how to handle two race winning drivers and continue progressing in development/engineering, I think there's a very good case for the two of them electing to stay beyond 2026.

Logan crushes the sheet of paper and throws it into the pile of already crushed papers. He puts down the pen and cracks his fingers, again.

He’s been at this for hours and he hates it knowing he’s terrible at expressing himself and Oscar’s probably not going to even look at this. 

Logan takes a deep breath once again and picks up his pen.

I’m not very good at expressing my feelings but I’ll try my best.

I’ve missed you lately and I miss all our late night conversations, my nights feel empty without them. I miss our friendship and the very long conversations we had. 

When you asked me how I was doing and I said “it’s been alright.” That was a blatant lie. I’ve been doing absolutely horrible. I haven’t seen a good day in months and every morning I ask myself why I’m doing this to myself, I ask if everything I left behind was worth it. Should I have given up?

 I’m glad you’re doing well and winning trophies, I’ve never been happier for you. Remember when your rookie year was being compared to Hamilton’s? That was amazing. 

Great, now he’s gone off track again, absolutely perfect. Logan’s pen left the paper again and he contemplated crushing this one up. He eventually decided against it and his pen tip touched the paper again.

He doesn’t know what he’s going to write anymore but he doesn’t care. He just wants to let his feelings out.

I hate how we don’t talk anymore. I hate how life has to pull its strings on us. I hate how we walk past each other as if we never knew each other. I’ve been trying my hardest, I really have.

I want to talk to you. I want to hear your voice again. 

I’ve been making wishes on every shooting star I’ve seen and been throwing in a penny for every wishing well I’ve come across, just wishing you were my friend again, wishing that I could go back in time and relive those moments in PREMA.

I didn’t treasure those times enough.

Every single time I see any McLaren video, I stop and stare, imagining that it could’ve been you and I. Believe me, I love how you and Lando have developed one of the closest bonds ever and trust me, I think Alex is a perfect teammate. 

But I just wish that we had another chance and I wouldn’t fuck it up this time. I really wish I did.

Every single time Lando calls you “Osc”, it makes me shiver just knowing that I could never be half the person Lando was. I do everything and risk it all just trying to be more like Lando or just someone who you would bother to look at

His mind flashes back to every single time he and Oscar have done anything together, watch movies, do stupid promotional videos, even sad times came back and made him wish he took those moments better.

He tears up slightly, but wipes his tears away before they spill onto the paper. Lando’s voice saying “Osc” rings in his head like an annoying bell which kills him slightly every time it repeats.

He slams his hand into the table, causing everything to jolt, even getting startled by his own actions. Logan isn’t even on Lando’s level, not even a quarter of the way there.

Lando’s better in every way, definitely much better teammate than Logan would’ve been.

His tears resurface but he doesn’t wipe them away this time, he lets them trickle down his cheek, cling on to his skin at his chin and finally drop down onto the paper, causing a stain.

More tears cause stains on the bottom part of the paper before Logan wipes them all away.

He places the pen down and looks at the letter, which has tear stains, but Logan couldn’t care less. He puts the letter down and folds it neatly in half, slotting it into a brown envelope. He seals the envelope tight, wrinkling the paper from pressing too hardly. 

He takes his pen up again and the tip floats above the paper.

He takes a few seconds before writing.

His throat stings from crying. He didn’t even cry for that long but it hurts him. His own words repeat in his head like a knife twisting into his body.

He opens up Oscar’s chat on his phone, his last message being left on Seen.

3 weeks ago Great race :)

He hasn’t even given Oscar a message for the Australian Grand Prix but Logan couldn’t care less.

His fingers hover over his keyboard.

Can we meet sometime soon?

He hesitates about sending it.

I walked into my office at the paddock and noticed another note on my desk. But this time no gift. Which was weird. If it wasn’t Max or Charles then who kept doing this.

I opened up the letter.

The Letter:

Dear Y/N, I’ve always hated the way you looked at him and not me. Part of me always wished I could be him ,just so you’d look at me the same way. Do you ever see the way I look at you?? He’s never looked at you the way I do. Maybe it’s because he’s never loved you as much as I do. I wanna scream it from the rooftops. I don’t think he ever deserved you if I’m being honest. You deserved better than him. I can’t hide how much I want you anymore. It’s killing me not being able to tell you how much I want to be yours. All I’ve ever wanted was to be yours and for you to be mine. But I don’t know if you’ll ever feel the same way. So if you do want to know who this. Then meet me in the garage before the race in Austin. I can’t keep hiding this anymore.

I set the note down. I knew what I had to do now. I ran out of my office.

“Y/N you going somewhere I need help with something” Oscar said. “It’s kinda important Oscar I gotta go” I said. “But they need you to race today” Oscar said. “What why” I said. “I don’t know but this is your opportunity go get it” Oscar said. “But your seat” I said.

“You are very talented and I know you can do this” Oscar said. “Thanks Osc” I said. I then walked over to the garage. I looked around not seeing anyone in the garage.

“Great this is hopeless just another stupid prank or something” I said to myself. Nobody was coming maybe this was all in my head. I sat on the wheel of Landos car.

I was only gonna wait a couple more minutes. Before I had to get ready to race. I then heard footsteps from behind me.

“I can’t believe you actually..” Lando said. “Lando” I said. “You showed up” Lando said. “You’ve been writing these” I said. “Yes I have and I’ve been dying to tell you” Lando said I stood up.

“Lando I” I said. “For years he’s gotten everything including you” Lando said. “All I’ve ever wanted was you.. but I didn’t know how to say” Lando said. “This is all so” I said.

“Confusing.. yeah I know but just listen to me” Lando said. “Lando I” I said looking into his beautiful eyes. “But I need you to know that I love you.. more than anything” Lando said. “Y/N I’ve loved you forever and I can’t hide it anymore” Lando said cupping my cheek.

“I…” I began to say but we were cut off. “Guys we gotta get ready and Y/N suit up” Zak said I nodded. “She’s racing” Lando asked. “Yeah Oscar has a concussion so he can’t she’s in” Zak said.

We finally lined up on the grid. I was in third place and Lando in second. Max was in first as usual. But I knew that I needed to win. And Lando and I already had a plan.

The team let us connect our radios. Being that I normally help him.

“Radio check Lando” I said. “Yeah I can hear you Y/N sounds good” Lando said. “He already knows your strategy so let’s switch things up” I said he laughed. “Spice it up a bit huh” Lando said.

“Exactly Lando” I said. “Well I got your back on this one” Lando said. “And I’ll defend your position” I said. “We’ve got this one in the bag” Lando said. “Then let’s give everyone a show” I said.

The race finally started. Lando got in front of me. I defended my position and his too. Behind me was Carlos. I knew he was quick but I couldn’t let him get through.

And of course Max was driving very dangerously. Trying to push Lando of the track.

“Lan you know the drill” I said. “Yeah I know but he’s being a dick” Lando said. “We will get him when she times right” I said.

It was down to the last two laps. Time went by. But Max didn’t pit and he was still on old tires. Lando and I knew what we were doing.

“Alright Lan you ready” I said. “Yep just be careful you know how he is” Lando said. We finally hit a straight. I went around the left and Lando went around the right side.

Max only saw the one strategy. So he was covering the right side. As I snuck through to take P1. And then Lando got by. Max was getting slower because of his old tires.

“That was a good operation Y/N” Lando said. “Stay behind me there’s DRS enough for you to pass me” I said. “Y/N..” Lando said. “Lando just go get your first win” I said. “You’d do that for me” Lando asked. “Yes of course Lando” I said. “But why” Lando said. “Because I love you” I said.

He then passed me and crossed the finish line. We got both of us up on the podium. We went around again and then parked the cars in our spots. “That was brilliant Y/N just brilliant” Zak said I took my helmet off. “Thank you” I said smiling.

“Y/N that was insane you guys over took Max beautifully” Oscar said. “See I do have good ideas” I said. “Everyone’s pissed at the Red Bull garage” Oscar said. “Good” I said. Lando came over. “First big win Lando congrats” Oscar said hugging him.

“This is so unreal” Lando said taking his helmet off. “You deserve it we are so proud of you” Zak said shaking his hand. “I’m on the podium” Lando said jumping around. He then went over and hugged his Dad. I smiled. Max ended up with fourth. Carlos got third.

“That was so good Y/N you are incredible” Carlos said hugging me. “Thank you Carlos” I said. “And very feisty that overtake my goodness” Carlos said. “You let him go ahead but why” Charles said. “Because..” I said looking at Lando. “Ah .. he’s the one writing the letters” Charles said.

“Well duh he’s been in love with her for years” Carlos said. “You knew” I said. “Yes I knew he was behind them I am his other best friend” Carlos said. “So now what” I said.

“Now you go get the guy” Charles said. I then walked over to Lando. “Lan” I said tapping his shoulder. “Ye..

He began to say I then kissed him. He wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed me.

“WOOO WOO FINALLY” the crowed cheered. “go Y/N that’s my girl” Kika yelled. “Finally” Carlos said. “I…” I said. “I love you” Lando said. “I love you” I said he smiled and picked me up. I wrapped my legs around his waist.

“Double podium baby let’s go” Lando said spinning me around. “We did it” I said. “First F1 win for Y/N” Lando said the team cheered. “Can you put her down we need her” Zak said. Lando set me down. “Right your right” Lando said.

Later..

We all went out to celebrate our double podium. A lot of the team came and our friends too.

“Y/N let me just say that was some race” Lewis said. “I still can’t get over her letting him pass” Charles said. “Oh mate you wouldn’t have let me through” Carlos said looking at Charles.

“No not if I’m faster and she was” Charles said. “Did you not hear the radio message” Kika said. “No what was it” Charles said. “He asked why she wanted him to pass” Kika said. “And then she said because I love you” Kika said.

“Awww well that’s kinda sweet” Charles said. “But what about Carlando” Carlos said sadly. “You know I love you too Carlos” Lando said I laughed. “But he loves Y/N more” George said. “True” Lando said I smiled.

“I mean I’m pretty great” I said. “Yeah yeah.. you are the best” Lando said pulling me closer to him. “I have to document this I feel like a proud Dad” Daniel said taking a picture of me and Lando. “Dan send me those” I said.

“Of course I will” Daniel said setting his camera down. After the dinner we went back to the hotel. Lando and I walked to our rooms. Which we had alone. But something felt different.

“Umm…never mind” Lando said. He was about to go into his room. “Wait” I said he stopped. “What” Lando said. I then ran over and kissed him. “Can I stay” I said looking at him. “Yes I’d like that” he said smiling.

The next day

“Oh did I wake you I’m sorry” Lando said. “No une sunlight did” I said rolling over. “Oh my bad I must’ve hit that” Lando said shutting the blinds. “Mmmh that’s better” I said.

“If I’m being loud I can go out” Lando said I looked over at him and smiled. “What’s the smile for” Lando said. “Just admiring you” I said. “Ah checking me out” he said. “A bit” I said he laughed. “And” he said. “My best friends super hot” I said.

“You are too cute” Lando said. “I think I’m stealing your shirts more often it” I said. “Well you do look good” Lando said. “Then take a picture” I said jokingly. “Hmm” he said grabbing his camera. “Can I be the jpg account muse” I said. He sat on the bed and took my picture.

“You’ve always been my muse” he said. I hid my face. “That’s so cheesy” I said. “And I love you is that too cheesy” Lando said. “No it’s not” I said he kissed me. “Good cause I really really love you” Lando said. “I love you Mr. Norris” I said. He put his camera back on the table. He then turned the light off.

“Can you cuddle me”I said. “Mmmh” he said laying behind me getting back under the blankets. “Perfect now I’m gonna go back to sleep” I said as he wrapped his arms around me.

“Okay I love you” he whispered in my ear kissing my cheek. And that was the last thing I heard before falling back asleep.

okay i technically already did this, but i'm not going to make myself do an unrelated chore before answering bc making the list required like two other preliminary chores (cleaning fridge, organizing pantry) so i think i earned this one

i have literally been thinking about this independently for a week. this question haunts me. i really go back and forth because i don't think either of them, like... needs another kid. lando never really expected to date again so he definitely never expected to have another child, and oscar's always planned to race into his mid-to-late 30's and maybe figure his life out after that, so emma's already a bonus for him. they'd both definitely be content to raise emma and enjoy each other and have their careers and that would be enough. BUT. yeah. i love a baby.

basically where i'm at with it is that i think lando would leave it up to oscar? like lando looooves being emma's dad, but he's content. he's got everything he needs. he knows, though, that as much as oscar loves LOVES emma and sees her as his responsibility and his kid, too (eventually), she's not actually his. oscar wasn't around when she was a baby, didn't get the full experience, and lando could understand oscar wanting all of that. and lando's happy to do it again if oscar does want to, but it's gotta be because oscar wants it, bc on his own, lando wouldn't.

then i think oscar wouldn't even consider it until later on in his career. he knows his schedule is crazy, and he knows lando gave up everything for emma when she was born, and he doesn't want to think about putting lando in that position again, bc oscar won't be around all the time. it would be lando alone a lot of the year. but i could see him reaching that mid-30's point, a WDC (or six or eight, who's to say) under his belt, and deciding... yeah. he'd like a baby, maybe. and emma would be like 15-16 by then, so she's more independent, and it just feels like the right time.

i have about eight side/spin-off/future fics in mind for this universe that may or may not fully form themselves in the future, but this second child concept is like top-five in that category, which is why i have pretty cohesive thoughts on it LOL. i think emma would be such a good big sister, too, and i have this whole lando and osc convo with her sitting in my brain where they talk through their decision and make sure she doesn't think it's because she's not enough for them, etc. interesting future sibling dynamics too where emma was around for the whole relationship, the wedding, vaguely remembers times when it was just her and lando, has CLEAR memories of oscar racing and winning and their family being around the paddock. and considers oscar her parent for sure, but definitely still thinks of lando differently than osc. and then the second baby would just... not have any of that? they'd always know oscar and lando as equal parents who are always around. and em as their very cool older sister who comes home from uni every summer to spoil them and tells stories of when dad and uncle max were racing drivers.

jedidiah would be test tube, i feel like she would stay up all night while ignoring everyone else because shes working on a project. although more sciencey, she does build stuff too so i guess she can be an architect.

elijah would be taco, theyre that person in the woods from earlier. they also both like tea and from european countries (sorta? idk if countries really exist in ii, but she is british 💔). also i gave her a cat mask instead of the elephant mask, and im now realizing the taco cat thing 😭.

adam would be mephone, they have similar vibes imo, and i feel like he would have good relationship advice. and since mephone is sorta robot, i thought that would go well with adam being a demon.

rowan would be candle, with all the magic stuff from her i thought that would go well with the visions stuff. plus candle is kinda black coded, atleast most people (including my self) draw her as black for gijinkas/humanized

Oscar stared at you with wide eyes when hearing what you said, not liking where this was going at all and as soon as he heard you say Lando’s name, he felt like he was going to break out in hives. He had a good relationship with Lando for the most part even though they had their moments on track but of course they were going to be each other’s competition when racing. He didn’t want to feel that way off the track too though. Something about you pretending to date his teammate didn’t sit right with him. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?,” he said to you, not having a dominant enough personality to flat out tell you ‘no’. He would never tell you what to do but he couldn’t hide his discomfort at the idea of you fake dating his teammate. And what if you decided you liked Lando’s company more than his?

Charles looked over at Oscar in confusion, not seeing what the big deal was. He wasn’t thrilled about you pretending to date someone else but if it benefitted the three of you and your friends as well, who was he to try and stop it? Besides he knew that Lando was in love too and he was the best option for this. They couldn’t have someone like Pierre doing it. He actually trusted Lando. “I mean, this is probably a good way to get the heat off of both us and Katie and Max,” he said, being the rational one for once.

I look between them, smiling at Charles since he seemed to understand, nodding, before looking back at Oscar. “It’s two birds, one stone. Everyone will be so shocked by the news that all eyes will stop looking at us three and stop looking at the three of them, too. It will give everyone the space we need, the space we used to have to be together before those stupid photos got leaked. Lando and I are best friends, and we’re both great actors if I do say so myself, and we’ll really sell that we’re dating... I’ll be able to be at every race, and the McLaren paddock, without anyone caring. I’ll be able to congratulate Charles and people will think it’s just me congratulating a friend of my boyfriend’s. It’s a win-win situation, Osc.” I knew that Oscar felt second best to Lando already, Lando being first seat and the one who everyone in McLaren put their hopes and dreams at titles on, and now he’d see him being affectionate with me and I knew it would hurt. “If there was anyone else on the grid that made sense, I’d choose them... everyone else who are close to you guys is either already in a known relationship or they are Pierre Gasly and I don’t think either of you want me near Pierre without supervision. But, baby, if you’re not okay with it... just tell me and I’ll call it off.”

I widen my eyes when seeing Lando’s live, knowing he most definitely was drunk. I shake my head a bit, playfully rolling my eyes before reaching for my own phone and clicking on his live. I leave a comment that says 'i hope you don’t think that’s a real lunch’, knowing fans would just think that it was his friend casually giving him a hard time. But it was also my way of reminding him that he still needed to eat a real meal if he wanted to keep our deal alive where I would send him the photos he wanted. I couldn’t help but smile to myself as I watched him barely able to contain the hot wings, wanting to scold him but also realizing that I was in love with this idiot. “I don’t know how he got by without us before,” I tell you before taking another bite of my salad before you scolded me for focusing on Lando and not myself.

“And you said Max F was a good chaperone. Apparently not.” Max scoffs, smirking and letting out a laugh. “You better not send him a photo after that. You gotta teach him a lesson. Don’t let him use his stupid puppy dog face on you. And also, don’t let him complain to you later when he feels sick from drinking alcohol, chugging milk and eating hot wings.” Max laughs when you say you don’t know how he got on before the two of you, shaking his head. “He made some questionable decisions before you came into the picture and actually tried to assist him through life. Like when he shaved his head...”

Bundesliga: Bentaleb interview: "My mind is made up that I have to play"

Nabil Bentaleb has been with FC Schalke 04 for two years, one year ago S04 signed him as a permanent member of Tottenham Hotspur. In the interview, the Algerian talks about early disappointments at the beginning of his career and a fateful encounter with a scout.

In addition, the 23-year-old reveals what lessons he has learned from the harsh criticism of him over the past season.

SPOX: Mr Bentaleb, you grew up in Wazemmes, a working-class area in Lille, where you started playing football. Where does your passion for round leather come from?

Nabil Bentaleb: At the very beginning I wanted to do karate, because that’s what my seven year older brother did. But at some point he stopped and switched to football. When I saw him kick, I wanted to emulate him there too. I was five or six years old then. Since then, there’s been nothing else in my life. I was extremely ambitious very early on and always cried when I lost a game. I also wanted to improve relatively quickly. My goal was to be much stronger than my brother.

SPOX: How’d it go at school?

Bentaleb: I was a very good student, but I was too distracted by football because I hadn’t thought of anything else. I often sat in class and wondered who could have everything from our neighborhood in the afternoon to go kicking together. Football motivated me more than school. (laughs)

SPOX: At the age of ten, you moved to the junior performance centre at OSC Lille. How did it go for you in the beginning?

Bentaleb: In the beginning it was easy for me. I was technically superior to the others because I also played a lot of futsal in the hall. Over time, however, things got more complicated because my coaches didn’t believe in me very much. For them, my technical skills, my passion and the desire to win were not skills they wanted to refine.

SPOX: Four years later you were told that the LOSC would not go any further.

Bentaleb: In Lille, young players were very focused on the physical and athletic aspects. Those were the main reasons they didn’t want to keep me. I was too small and not muscular enough for them. That was very difficult to understand, because we were all physically on the same level. There were a few players who were already bigger and who had developed physically faster than the majority. These players took them over, my total package didn’t have enough quality for them.

SPOX: How close was this decision to you?

Bentaleb: Very close, because a very big dream was destroyed. I wanted to play with the pros in Lille at all costs. Especially since I came from the city and loved the club.

SPOX: How did you react to this first setback?

Bentaleb: Looking back, I think I gave my first little proof that I can be mentally strong. I told myself that I just had to stay tuned so that one day I could earn my money with football. I wanted to show them that they were wrong and I could do it outside of Lille.

SPOX: They then moved to Royal Excelsior Mouscron in Belgium, but just a year later the club went bankrupt. From there it went on to the U17 of USL Dunkerque. That’s not necessarily the way to go to the Premier League a little later.

Bentaleb: That’s true, but I didn’t think about it and honestly I didn’t believe it could happen. My point was not to let up so that one day I wouldn’t have to blame myself. I thought If it works, it works and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Mouscron is around the corner from Lille, but I was in another country, saw my friends very rarely and got up every day at five o’clock to get school and training under one roof. That wasn’t easy, but my thoughts at the time were only to become a professional footballer.

SPOX: Have you lost hope in the meantime?

Bentaleb: No. At that time I had the perception anyway that I was alone and everyone was against me, that was what it looked like in my head at that time. During my time as a youth player, I had the constant feeling that I always had to be twice as good and do twice as much as the others in order to draw attention to myself at all.

SPOX: Haven’t you ever thought that maybe that’s the way you see it, but it may not be true?

Bentaleb: No, for me these thoughts were perfectly normal at that time. My parents are immigrant children. They had to work very, very hard to get through and give us a reasonably pleasant life. They also had to do twice as much as others, it was also anything but easy for them. My father had up to three jobs. That’s why it was firmly anchored in me that you have to work twice as much to survive in life. It all comes down to how you react to bitter moments. For example, I know several players of my age group who were also eliminated in Lille. They gave up afterwards and did not become professional footballers.

SPOX: Frederic Basire, your coach in Dunkerque, once said that many people had warned him about you.

Bentaleb: He was the first coach who really believed in me and my abilities. He found it worthwhile to develop me as a player and person and not to let me down immediately, as some other coaches have done before. We often got in each other’s hair without losing respect for each other. He said that we neglect the technical area and put me in the defense. I didn’t understand that at first, because that wasn’t my strength at all. I was a midfielder who could play decisive passes into the offensive. But he wanted to help me to become more complete and he saw something in me.

SPOX: One day a consultant is said to have arranged a trial training at Birmingham City for you. How did this happen?

Bentaleb: This story had its origins early on. My brother used to take his boys to play futsal. I went along for weeks every time, but I was not allowed to play because I was clearly too small. But I kept calling until one player was missing and they couldn’t help but let me play. Later, when I was twelve, 13 years old, I kicked along regularly, always on Sundays. A few years later, a scout from a consulting agency was in the hall. After the game he went to my brother and wanted his number because he saw something in me. He didn’t even talk to me directly. It took us eight months to hear from him again. He called my brother one Saturday and said, “Tell your brother he’s flying to Birmingham on Monday. (laughs)

SPOX: What did you think?

Bentaleb: Actually just: All right, I’m ready, let’s go. The call came at the right time, because the season in Dunkerque just ended and it was not quite clear how it would go on for me. So I flew over and the practice went really well. However, the club had problems paying the training compensation to Lille. That’s how it went and I had to wait a bit.

SPOX: What happened then?

Bentaleb: The scout talked to me and my parents. He said he could give me a practice session at Manchester United, Arsenal, ManCity and Newcastle, but that would take some time. Only Tottenham would do it right away. I replied: Then let’s go!

SPOX: What then came up to you at the Spurs?

Bentaleb: On the first day I trained with the U17, the next day I was allowed to join coach Tim Sherwood’s second team. There I met much bigger and older players. After a week of training, they told me it would fit. I should go home, pack my stuff, come back and sign my contract.

SPOX: And suddenly, for the first time, you were really far away from home and in a foreign country.

Bentaleb: That was not easy. There were periods when I didn’t see my family for six, seven months. I was forced not to think about it much, even though I often really missed it. But I knew I had to make such sacrifices. I always knew why I was doing this.

SPOX: Why did Tottenham finally give you the chance you were denied in France and Belgium?

Bentaleb: Because England simply has a different mentality. When I played in Mouscron and Dunkerque, it was mandatory to attend school regularly. But what counted for me was to play football every day to get better. That’s all I wanted to think about. I arrived at Tottenham and they said to me: “You have four hours of English lessons a week, the rest is just football. I was thrilled and trained like a madman every day. The support of those responsible was also incredible. I could now easily name ten of my former teammates who are now earning their money as professionals.
