flashback scene not of mike and will at the swing set because we already know about that but a flashback scene that shows a moment between them that solidifies they have that bond no one else has. a flashback scene that makes the audience aware of “oh mike’s feelings have always been there”. because remember they were only 12 in s1… and they’re wanting an 8 year old mike and will. i don’t need a swing set flashback scene. i need a “lonnie was being a piece of shit so joyce sent jonathan and will to go have a sleepover at the wheelers for the night so all 3 boys are in mike’s room or in the basement and mike wakes up to will crying so he comforts him which once again proves how in tune mike is to wanting to comfort and protect will and from that night on they both knew they’d forever be in each other’s lives” scene

Every time I watch the cold open of Memorial and B'Elanna tells Tom about how she ASSEMBLED a 50's television set from SCRATCH just to surprise him (there's no reason beyond that - just an incredibly sweet and thoughtful gesture) and replicated popcorn for him to eat while he watches and Tom says "They didn't have remote controls in the 50's ♥ Also where's my beer?" I contemplate murder ESPECIALLY because B'Elanna responds cheerfully to it - GIRL!!! LEAVE HIM!!!!!! IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE CHARMING IN THIS SCENE????

pls pls elaborate on why u hate women cutting hair off in story lines... Ive always felt a certain type of way.. Like idk exactly what the original intention was but i interpret it as a women has to throw away feminine traits to be strong or to start again. To grow up and be equal or something akin. Ive never liked it but i cant quite place my words either. Id lovvve to know why u hate it if you care to share!

yeah pretty much i just don’t like any depiction of a woman having to change her appearance to gain strength or be seen as equally strong as her male counterparts. for maki, her looks weren’t even a central part of her identity before hand so her having to go through this aesthetic transformation before her physical strength is acknowledged just seemed unnecessary. she was regarded as strong beforehand; gojo acknowledged and her classmates acknowledged her strength, and the first years all undoubtedly believed that she was strong and capable despite not having any cursed energy so for her to suffer so much, get burned, have her hair chopped off and then get the recognition is just… idk i don’t like it. i understand that her family never saw her that way, but it’s not like nobody ever saw that she was strong and sure yeah you could argue her hair being shorter and her resembling toji more physically is part of her reckoning with the zenin’s, but even so i don’t buy that bc they didn’t like toji either 😭 and it’s not like maki was mocked for her looks or anything as a kid. idk i’m not saying it very eloquently but i just thought it was so unnecessary that the narrative could only refer to her as equal to toji after her extreme physical trauma when she had the same mental and psychological trauma and personal motives and conviction beforehand. also to have her go through all that and then continue to draw her with a crazy bust to waist to hip ratio is nonsense like it just shows the point wasn’t that she didn’t need long hair or now she has the looks of a fighter or whatever bc there was still room to make sure she had a very clear “womanly” physique

to the credit or jjk, a lot of the characters go through physical scarring as an occupational hazard, which i do appreciate and appreciate that it doesn’t result in them being seen as less than. i just think maki’s changes coupled with her now being seen as toji’s equal put a bad taste in my mouth not a fan

and to be clear i like maki!! i like that she got her lick back and i like that she has such a strong conviction and friends that care for her and that she knows her worth i just don’t like what happened to her and/or how it happened

okay these guys might not get a mention on this blog for a while- if ever- so i'm gonna talk about them now bc i've been rotating them in my mind for a while

these are captain's siblings! the ones they left behind when they were 14 to run away to inkopolis. captain certainly isn't proud of leaving them behind at ALL, in fact the one thing they wish they'd done differently is taking them with them, even if it would've been damn near impossible to take care of 2 younger siblings all on their own away from home when they were already struggling to take care of themself. they have no idea how their siblings fared with their neglectful ass father after they left, but pierce (right) was only a year or 2 younger than them, so they hoped he'd be able to leave soon too- taking harper (left) with him

so yeah harper (left) i think is probably around 16 or 17 now, having been 7 or 8 when captain left. since she was pretty young she didn't really know exactly why they left, and they didn't tell her either, so i'd say she probably resents them for it. she's a hotheaded edgy teen, classic rebel, you know the deal.

and then there's pierce (right), who's around 21 or 22 now, so he would've been 12 or 13 when they left. even if they didn't say a word to him before packing their bags and hopping a train at the asscrack of dawn, he knows exactly why they did. because being a kid and not only growing up, but having to parent your 2 younger siblings in your father's place, is hard. he basically had to take on their role as caretaker of harper when they left, being the second oldest, and that's how he realized. he doesn't resent them exactly, but he does wish they'd at least said goodbye. he's an outwardly chipper guy, and puts on a brave face even at the worst of times.

and they both did eventually get out of that house- pierce didn't leave as soon as he turned 14 like captain did (though cod, he wanted to) but when harper was old enough to be left home alone he got a job and saved up what he could to get himself and his younger sister out of there. and then when harper was 12 and he was 17, he got them both out of there. they might have gone somewhere else first, but i wanna say they probably ended up in splatsville, living in an apartment together with pierce doing what he can to support harper through school, and she does some turfing herself to help with rent and save up her own money so she can get her own place eventually.

i feel like the reason they probably haven't run into captain is that captain lives in inkopolis and only really goes to splatsville to visit rookie, and the last time they saw their siblings, neither of them were fully transformed yet, and they aren't so easy to recognize anymore themself. so if they've happened to pass each other on the street, it'd take more than just a cursory glance to realize just who they're passing. so it could definitely, and likely will, happen eventually. who's to say.

i think maybe i need to replay rebirth some time to look at this diplomatically because aerith is My Favourite and i might be biased but i think my biggest story critique of rebirth is that i wish they'd done a little more with her. given that this is the game she dies in i found it strange that they didn't push her into the foreground a little more since this is their last real chance to do that with her as a living member of the party (i'm sure she'll show up in some limited capacity in part 3 but dead lifestream!aerith is pretty different to alive!aerith i think).

i know that sounds like a weird thing to say when you consider stuff like them giving her the game's theme song to sing during loveless and the fact that the last chapter is basically The Aerith Movie but there is a strange lack of focus on her in moments where it feels like we should get more from her throughout the narrative. this game pushes tifa and cloud's relationship more in the mandatory story segments, and i LOVED what they did with that relationship in this game, but it felt odd that the same focus was not given to cloud's relationship with aerith throughout the story given that the ending hinges on him being so devastated by her death that he enters a delusional state of grief. and this isn't even a shipping thing bc as far as shipping goes i'm an aerti truther and i feel pretty equally neutral about both cloti and clerith as romances (if anything i prefer cloti!). it's about giving proper narrative buildup to the relationship that the game's tragic ending hinges on - a lot of aerith's most interesting scenes with cloud in the bulk of the game are optional, which i think is a weird thing to do given what the game is building to.

i also wish they did more with her being a cetra! again, the last couple chapters put focus on this but prior to that aerith is weirdly quiet about it. particularly in cosmo canyon, while we do get the lovely bonfire scene, aerith otherwise has a weird lack of dialogue when it comes to the lore dump scenes with the gi and bugenhagen. i expected her to feel some type of way about these revelations but any indication of that is at best subtext and she doesn't really say a lot about it. and for all that they emphasise aerith and nanaki's connection early on as beings closer to the planet, once you get to cosmo canyon there's a weird lack of payoff for it. same with tifa's dunk in the lifestream - i kinda thought aerith might have something to say about it as a cetra, and in fairness i think it's possible she did and the game is withholding some of aerith and tifa's offscreen interactions for part 3 (i swear this isn't even just an aerti cope lol i think the fact that they deliberately show them talking without us getting to hear it might be something they come back to), but i also wish we got to connect with this part of aerith's character more NOW, while she's still here, so it can inform our understanding of her choices and feelings at the end. i just find it kind of a bummer because aerith's complicated relationship to her heritage is a fascinating aspect of her character and her tragedy that i think goes a little untapped in this game, which means it's likely to go untapped in the story as a whole since she's. you know. dead.
