They’re announced in advance and fanworks are posted on the corresponding days of the week. In this case, it’s for the sbk fandom as a whole! This blog will be archiving all creations submitted as long as they follow the guidelines

Is this limited to fanart and fanfiction?

Nope. You’re more than welcome to make moodboards, stimboards, song playlists, edits, cosplay and the likes! Additionally, there’s no art requirements or minimum/maximum word count. Anything ai generated is disallowed.

What type of content is allowed?

If it’s within a creator’s boundaries, it’s allowed (this information can be found in #member-info on the SBK Community discord). Tag accordingly for shipping or content warnings if your works contain them. Make use of the tumblr blacklist for topics you don’t want to see. If you don’t like something, don’t engage. Be respectful. And please be patient to those who haven’t stated what they are/aren’t ok with.

Can I post something late?

Absolutely! This isn’t an event with a hard set deadline.

Do I have to make something for every day?

Nah, you can make as little or as much as you’d like, at whatever pace you’re comfortable with.

Just because Im lowkey pissed that people don't understand the archive warnings on AO3 and get mad at the author because of their own lack of understanding:-

Here are what the archive warning tags mean and what each apply to:

No Archive Warnings Apply

This means the fic doesn't have any of the content that fit into the other warnings

Still tread with caution, especially if there are no other tags, as in 0. No relationship tags, no character tags, nothing, nada. It means the author might be really new or just was too lazy to use any tags or warnings. Know the risk or play it safe and don't read.

Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings

This means the fic might have none, some or all of the listed warnings. This is the warning. You might end up reading triggering material, or reading a fluffy sweet fic. It's a toss up, so if you aren't willing to take the risk, DO NOT READ.

If you've filtered out any of the other archive warnings and see this one, make sure you are ready to encounter something that might be triggering, that you've filtered or just avoid it. Even if the other tags don't indicate it, be wary and stay cautious, remember that this is still a warning.

Underage

The fic has pedophillia and just like the rape/noncon warning, can be either a plot point or part of smut. Just like the above, if you do not want to read smut, play it safe and do not read if it has 0 additional tags. Honestly just filter it out all together, it's a good idea.

Some people also might use this tag when the fic involves sex between two underage characters (usually when the show is set in a high school), please keep this in mind if you aren't filtering the underage warning altogether. Also serves as a, "Always read additional tags!" note.

AO3 is an archive site first, fanfiction hub second. It isn't for readers, it's for authors to archive their work and be able to label their work accordingly (or just not label it).

As a reader you should be respectful towards the authors and their work. You have no right to demand for a new chapter of a work you may like, you have no right to insult the author because of your own lack of knowledge or ignorance. Be grateful you're even getting any work from these people. Again, these people. These authors are real people like you and me, writing you fanfiction to read at no additional cost.

You’ll have to wait and see! Tag Team is an ongoing comic as much as it is an AU, so I won’t be skipping forward to show specific moments that will appear in future comic updates like other AUs out there. 

Can we suggest events and situations for the comic?

Tentative/flexible no. I already have most of it scripted out, so most “can this happen?” requests will not be honored. Small things like non-plot details or events/situations that happen before the events of canon (check out the pre-comic timeline here) might slide, but don’t get your hopes up.

Will Lumity happen?

Yes! It’ll take a while, but yes.

Will Hunter be shipped with anyone?

Sort of! Tag Team Hunter is aromantic, but he will go through a sort of pseudo-romance arc with someone to showcase that aro aspect. There isn’t an endgame romantic ship for him.

Story Questions:

How did Luz get to the demon realm, and how did Belos find her?

Luz slips into the demon realm at age 7 by falling into a lake near her house that was infused with titan’s blood. She ends up in a forest near the Emperor’s castle and is found by Hunter who secretly sneaks her food. She’s eventually found by coven scouts, mistaken for an escaped basilisk, and brought to Belos. (Post with more elaboration here).

Why does Belos take Luz in?

(This answer has changed with the revelations of Hollow Mind and King’s Tide)

Belos takes Luz in because 1) she’s human and he wants to “keep her safe” from the demon realm, and 2) as a sort of experiment to see if he could replicate the relationship he had with his brother through Hunter and Luz. It initially starts with the intention of making it so Hunter would be less likely to betray him (encouraging them to be codependent, making it so Luz has to be watched over since shes “defenseless”, etc), but it eventually evolves into Belos heavily projecting onto Luz because of their similarities. He gets creepily emotionally attached to what Luz represents.

What is Hunter’s reaction to having a new sibling?

He HATES it at first. He doesn’t like dragging around a terribly-behaved, fragile human that keeps getting into trouble. In the timeline, it takes around a year for them to stop bickering and start getting along. (More elaboration here).

Why keep Luz’s humanity a secret? Who knows?

It’s a manipulation tactic on Belos’s part to make Luz wary of witches and demons - he is the one to insist on how important it is that it’s kept secret, because “who knows what a witch will do when they find out you’re a defenseless human. They’ll rip you apart. You’re not like them. I’m the only one you can trust because I know who you really are and I’m kind to you,” etc.

No one knows but Belos, Hunter, and (unknowingly to the others) Kikimora through her snooping.

What’s the deal with the Guildersnake?

Luz’s Guildersnake, also known as Backup, was a gift from Eberwolf early on in Luz’s stay in the castle. (Elaboration here).

What is the Azura Incident?

The Azura Incident was an Azura bookclub meeting gone wrong, resulting in a month-long shipping war within the coven where the two sides were fighting over who Azura should be in a relationship with. There was a real threat that the Emperor could be overthrown in the chaos. Luz led one faction with Hunter as her second-in-command. Steve “led” the other faction with Lilith as the real mastermind. The chronological tag is HERE. The short fanfic of the incident is HERE.

Why doesn’t Luz have a staff?

To encourage Luz and Hunter’s codependency, and also the “us/them” mentality between humans and Witches that Belos is trying to foster in Luz (which… doesn’t really work). Hunter is responsible for Luz’s wellbeing, and since she can’t do magic or any way to defend herself (that Belos knows of), he has to stay by her side pretty much all the time. Hunter lets her borrow the staff outside the castle sometimes, though, and they of course have the glyphs.

Why does Warden Wrath call Luz “sir”?

Luz and Hunter are difficult to tell apart while fully masked, at least until they start speaking, so everyone calls them both “sir” out of convenience! Luz is pretty gender-nonconforming in canon, so she’s fine with it.

Does Luz remember how to speak Spanish/has Luz taught Hunter any Spanish?

Yes to both! Luz is still fluent, although it’s difficult to stay in practice since no one in the Boiling Isles can speak it. She has taught some to Hunter, but he doesn’t know much. He picks up certain phrases that he mutters to himself, though. (Elaboration here, here and here).

I’m sure this won’t be a popular or hot take but I’ve tagged this post accordingly in the hopes that shippers won't see it unless they wanna. So let’s get into it. Todays topic is: Platonic relationships in media and how Sesshoumaru and Rin share similarities with them. Goodie! 

I wanted to talk about these bonds to demonstrate something. 

Sully and Boo - Sully takes on a more parental role, and while initially afraid, becomes attached to Boo and protects her. In the end, he leaves her in her bedroom and revisits after a couple of years, to be greeted with an enthusiastic ‘Kitty!’

Sesshoumaru and ‘parental’ might not be two words that immediately come to mind, but he does show his care. He buys Rin new clothes and protects her from danger. She listens to him and follows what he says extremely literally, freezing in place for several minutes when he says to do so. At the end of Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru leaves her with Kaede at the village and revisits every so often- still visiting 3 years later when Kagome returns. We can infer its a regular occurrence since no one is shocked to see him, so Sesshoumaru has remained in her life. He’s not her ‘Papa’ by any means, but he is, and remains her guardian in spirit. He will always be greeted with an enthusiastic ‘Sesshoumaru-sama!’

Shifting more into a teacher/ ruthless protector role now, the above is about John Creasy, who becomes a bodyguard to a little girl. Creasy teaches her how to improve her swimming speed and not to fear the whistle as much. He also protects and ultimately sacrifices himself for her.

Sesshoumaru does not fulfil a proper ‘teaching’ role to Rin in the traditional sense of what we, as humans recognise, but if you pay attention, he does stop and wait while Rin forages or sends Jaken and Ah-Un with her to hunt for food. Shippo is also seen foraging for his father in a flashback, so it’s very easy to interpret Sesshoumaru’s command that Rin ‘feed herself’ to be a method of teaching her how to hunt and survive independently. Like a demon would. He protects Rin, not because he’s a bodyguard, but because she’s a part of his group.

These two are actually kind of the closest relationship dynamic to Sesshoumaru and Rin I can think of. Teresa is a lot more cold-hearted towards Clare than Sesshoumaru is with his charge, but they have the same - ‘unstoppable, efficient killing machine is taught some humanity from a child’ thing going on. 

Clare is mute when we first see her, she’s an orphan and traumatised. She latches onto Teresa and follows her wherever she goes - even following her off a cliff. 

Rin is mute when we first see her, she’s an orphan and traumatised. She latches onto Sesshoumaru and follows him wherever he goes - and if he jumped off a cliff it’s fair to say she’d follow if he asked her to. 

Now, Teresa tries to leave Clare for her own sake, to learn how to be a proper human. To live a human life. But Clare follows, and even after Teresa’s death, Clare idolises Teresa. Time does not temper her absolute adoration. (at least in the anime, I haven't read the manga) I don’t think time would temper Rin’s admiration either. Sesshoumaru would always have power over her. He would always be who she’d defer to, who would teach her right and wrong.

So yeah, these relationship dynamics are all slightly similar to Sesshoumaru and Rins, in various ways; but a key component is that their bond is NOT different from the ones shown. It’s never been intended as something set up to eventually be romantic. Unfortunately, the only thing separating Sesshoumaru and Rin from these other examples is that - Sesshoumaru is a hot, fictional male demon from an anime. Him being fictional allows for the prospect of eventual Sess/rin to be ‘softened’ for an audience in a way that John Creasy x Adult Pita is not. The latter would be unthinkable to many. Rin being fictional allows her to be shipped with her guardian and turned into a young teen bride in Yashahime. It being an anime also makes it seem ‘ok’ because anime is infamous for presenting this type of relationship ala Usagi Drop, but sometimes examples of it are removed these days like in Cardcaptor Sakura.

I hope I’m managing to get across the point that it’s the platonic dynamic in the OG Inuyasha between Sesshoumaru and Rin being changed into something romantic is what a lot of people like myself take umbrage with. I’m not getting into the grooming implications or arguments about her age when she gave birth - because that’s been covered extensively.

I’m saying that it’s sad. It’s really sad to me that this sweet, tender relationship of a traumatised orphan who latched onto the first strong presence she could was changed. Because platonic is never enough. Sex sells after all. If you are a Sess/rin shipper getting upset over what I’m saying - try looking at it like this. Monsters Inc 3 comes out: it’s been a few years. Boo is grown up *enough* that she’s been impregnated by Sully off-screen. 

Do ya not see how that could be a liiitttle bit offputting?

Idk, Sesshoumaru and Rin’s bond was, and remains a beautiful platonic relationship in Inuyasha imo. All of this is just my personal opinion, I’m not trying to force anything on anyone. Just some food for thought.

I think y’all forget how much the Inuyasha anime meandered all over the place. If you disagree, that’s fine. WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT. So many people went into Yashahime on this big nostalgia trip, hoping your own special headcanons would come true or whatever, then got ridiculously huffy when it didn’t conform to each of your individual likes. Criticize as you please. We are all entitled to our own opinions. God knows there are certain shows/books/etc that I love to rip apart, but I think the hate (or criticism if you cannot fathom that word--the way you present your criticism is really what makes the distinction) needs an anti-tag  some safe space tagging at this point. I’m enjoying the show, but damn if I can find anything to reblog that’s not shredding it apart.

AN EXAMPLE: You wanna hate the possibility of SessRin? That’s fine, but TAG ACCORDINGLY. (this is just an example of the biggest thing that pops up if you search. there are plenty of valid criticisms for the show. a #yashahimecrit tag is FINE if you don’t wanna tag anti. just...come on y’all. BE KIND. it’s not hard to use a tag.)

now im not quite sure if you want only writing tips or writing blog tips, so ive included tips and tricks for both!

WRITING BLOG TIPS :

have a masterlist. this might seem stupid and obvious, but ive seen people with no masterlist. people are lazy, so if they cant access your writing easily, they will just click away.

have a clean theme. aesthetics are important. they are. people love clean and easy to navigate themes. again, people are lazy, so if you make it easy to click through your blog and get to your writing, youll increase the chance of people reading your stuff!

how to get your work show up in general. putting links in your fanfic might lead to your story not showing up in the search. ive also heard that a banner thats too big can cause that. even using too many tags can lead to your work not showing up. its complicated.

the first five tags. im sure youve heard abt this already but the first five tags are the tags that will actually show up! so if someone follows #bts fluff and you tag your fic with that, your fic can show up on people's dashes as a recommended post!

tag accordingly. speaking of tags, please tag accordingly! theres nothing more annoying than finding a jimin fanfic in the taehyung fanfic tag. i really discourage you from mistagging your stories. if im scrolling through the taehyung fanfic tag and find a jimin fanfic, it makes me want to not read it. just tag your fics accordingly.

reblog your fics. i mean it. seriously, reblog them as much as you want! people live in different time zones or sometimes forget abt wanting to read your stuff, so reblogging it consistently for a week or so to get it on people's dashes helps!

teasers and taglists. i recommend doing both! teasers help to get people excited for your story and taglists ensure that people will read it, or at least remember to!

dont stress abt notes. now, this is less of a tip but rather something i just really really really want to tell you! i know youve heard this before, but please do not stress about notes. tumblr fame does not exists! it doesnt matter if your writing gets 2 notes or 300 or 5k notes! i do understand how getting a lot of notes can be motivating (every fics deserve all the love in the world by the way!!) but in the end, it should not be your motiviation to write. focusing on notes will ruin writing for you. it will. the amount of notes your fic will reach has nothing to do with how good your writing is. dont let something as superficial as notes ruin the fun of writing for you. its seriously not worth it! write for you and no one else!

WRITING TIPS :

write self indulgent fics. i seriously think all fics should be self indulgent. writing fics should be fun, so please write whatever you want! also, theres no such thing as an overdone trope. if you want to write a fake dating enemies to lovers fic, please write it! you might think there are already a bunch out there and its not worth writing another one, but youre wrong! there isnt one out there thats been written by you yet. go write it!

make playlists. now this is a bit specific to me because im absolutely obsessed with music, but making playlists that fit the mood of the fic has always helped me while writing and gotten me out of writers block before!

take your time. writing is freaking hard and when writers block hits, theres rarely ever something that you can do. try not to stress too much abt it! it happens to the best of us!

balance dialogue and detail. its important to find a middle. if im reading a fic and theres paragraph after paragraph after paragraph of detail, the chance of me just skipping that part is really high. because even though i love detail, it does get boring. so use dialogue to spice it up!

reading. okay, this sounds weird because youre asking for writing tips, but reading seriously help your writing so much! if you wanna improve your writing skills, reading a lot is going to be key. now, im not saying reading is necessary, but i do think that it can help you to better! whats even more important though is that you try to analyse people’s writing while reading. when i say you should analyse people’s writing, i do not mean you should write an entire analysis of a book, but to take a second and think to yourself how the authors just did that. how did they convey oc’s sadness? why did they just describe the weather? whats the purpose of this scene?

switch up sentence/paragraph length. shorter sentences/paragraphs = emphasise something and pick up the pace. longer sentences/paragraphs = slow down the story and allow for more detail. its important that you do a mix of both. utilise the length to your advantage. a well placed short sentence/paragraph can pack a lot of punch and turn your sad story in a heartbreaking one.

outline your fics. look this is very personal again because some people dont like to outline their fics, but i recommend outlining your fics. and when i say outline your fics, you can do it as little or as much as you want! it can be a few notes, or a long list of every detail you want to include. i just want you to know where this story is headed. its so easy to write yourself in a corner and trust me, you dont wanna end up there.

allow yourself to be free. this connects to the previous point i just made. even though i do recommend outlining your fics, i am also a firm believer of taking the story somewhere else if you feel like it. ive scrapped complete outlines before. half of the scenes i write also arent in my outline at all. you dont have to stick to the outline. if you think that a specific scene would add something to your story, then please go ahead and write that scene. just always remember where youre headed and dont loose focus.

have fun. i just really wanna reiterate this point again. its just so important to me that you have fun while writing! seriously. its just fanfiction. it should be fun. go crazy. i support you!

OKAY. *breaths* As someone who when it comes to Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction only goes into the Adrienette tag and never got the urge to see other ships in fics ever since the start of this show till now, I can safely say that I am indeed an Adrienette shipper.... yah know EXCEPT FOR CURRENT CANON. Because, this may shock everyone who likes this ship, the relationship they have in fanfiction and canon is not the same thing anymore. This series canon writing has been atrocious since the start of S3 (if not the middle of S2 where I could notice things were in the start of going in a weird /later confirmed bad/ direction)

So this is just a thing I wanted to say, hey like could y'all kindly not deliberately go into tags of your notp’s and harass shippers in their own tags/blogs? Cause that’s like, not raaad my dude. \(uwu)/ And tag stuff accordingly if you disagree? Please and thank you for being an amazing human being? And be polite if you wanna debate them? Also can we like not dismiss someone’s extremely valid points and logical points that they wrote/pointed out as flaws and/or good points and well written parts just because *le gasp* they ship Adrienette or Lukanette and/or Adrigami instead of what you ship or is endgame in canon! Blasphemy!

Okay now for the serious note, Marinette is always punished for shit she didn’t do to the point her embarrassment and distress in Truth made me cry and have an attack that later made me finally quit the show. (if you want to see that distress post it’s here) One of my bff’s who writes Adrienette fics on AO3 also hates the writing and destruction of characters in this entire show at this point and agrees that the writing for the characters has been shit, Marinette is both a great person and then suddenly a freak for plot reasons, Adrien is a saint except he literally is not and him not learning lessons is the worst representation and image for young boys ever, every single character has been distorted to fit plot instead of providing it, but they keep watching for lore for their fic and have been explaining to me what happened since then. So yes I know about Lies through them and osmosis of bloggers I follow. And some of them holy molly are Lukanette or Adrigami and even Marigami blogs because that doesn’t matter to me one fucking bit because they’re freakin’ darlings of people who tag stuff properly and aren’t rude to others or have ever been rude to me and the points they make are valid. Just as I also follow a lot of dedicated Adrienette only blogs and in fact what all of these have in common is that when I interact with them or ask stuff they all have been nothing but fluffy bunnies I wanna kidnap into my home.

Just as some other people have also pointed all these things out even tho they are also Adrienette shippers.

MY POINT IS *deep breaths* someone being a Lukanette shipper saying that Truth is a bad episode and presenting reasons outside their ship for it is valid. An Adrigami shipper pointing out that Lies is badly written and posting logical points that have nothing to do with the ship is valid.

You know what’s not valid?

Dismissing someone’s argument cause you went into their blog and noticed they shipped a certain ship even tho their debate/post had no ships involved as points of argument to begin with and then decided to harass/dismiss them and their post directly at them.

Guys we need to be kinder to each other. We need to respect each other. We need to understand that some people only like the shipping in a show. Some people only like to discuss writing of shows. Some people like to salt, others not at all. Some post things as an outlet not wanting different interaction/debate, others do want people to discuss and debate. ALL OF THIS IS GREAT AND FINE. BUT WE NEED TO RESPECT AND BE KIND TO EACH OTHER.

I have not been a perfect example of this and I am a mature person who can admit this. So if I unintentionally did this to you? I’m sorry. I will hear the person speaking to me and check myself and correct my behavior for next time. And so can you because I believe you are a good person.

I had proof of this very recently where me and someone else had a misunderstanding within a post and we ended up talking and we cleared up stuff. Turns out that person did not want to make me feel bad at all. We just had a case of me being a none English speaker and not being able to make my entire point super cohesive and them getting a wrong idea and it snowballing from there.

Which is also something I wanna point out. Please don’t forget that some people aren’t native English speakers and may not be able to explain themselves fully to you or cohesive enough. Be patient and before you think they are debating something without pointing out this thing or x forgot to point out something in their post ask them about it politely if they have an opinion on it or if maybe they forgot to mention? Jesus where am I going with this post at this point. Okay what I want everyone to take away from this is that we shouldn’t be fighting each other. We shouldn’t be dismissing and harassing each other. You know what we should be doing? Beating up Thomas Austruc and his writing team with sticks and DEMANDING BETTER WRITING FOR THIS SHOW AND ALL OUR SHIPS BE THEY CANON OR NOT ALL OF US TOGETHER---- Okay pitch fork revolution idea aside I just wanted to stop people from using a ship as a means to hurt each other. We all liked or still like MLB and I want us to be above this stuff. I believe in us cause I’m a stupid shounen protag whose hopes die last when it comes to people. I love you all okay? 1. How do I hit a bingo?

SO this lovely little image here shows all the ways you can hit a bingo. Please note you only need to hit any of these patterns on a card and not the exact square placement. IE your horizontal pattern can be on any row of the card, your vertical can be on any column, the postage stamp pattern can occur anywhere on the card, etc.

For some patterns, like Outside Corners, the pattern must be executed as shown to hit that bingo.

Hi! I'm relatively new to the fandom (well, mostly new in regards to trying to be active and blogging about it) and I was wondering: I see posts tagged as unsympathetic or sympathetic. The first I understand (any Side being... evil, I guess is the word?) while the second seems to only be used on Janus and Remus. I was wondering if you could please possibly explain when to call them being sympathetic? I just wanna make sure my Sanders Sides blog is being tagged right, if that makes any sense. ._.

I can try my best to explain.

When Janus first showed up in Can lying be good, most of the fanderdome was certain he was evil, and abusive and all that bad stuff, and wrote several stories where they didn’t tag it accordingly, because this was their idea on how canon Janus acted. Which is not true. This intense hate on the snake made several people feel bad, so the sympathetic deceit tag was born, it meant, that anything tagged with that was a good noodle, he was not evil in it and so on. (I took the whole tag to heart and was very lonely in that tag for a while before others joined ((aka why my header is the way it is)) some got hate for not seeing the snake as evil, and it was pretty vicious. Then when Remus came the fanders who had been around when Janus was introduced did not want a repeat so the sympathetic Remus tag was born, but, unlike with Janus for some reason, Remus didn’t get the same hate attacking him as our dapper noodle did.

After that an upsurge in unsympathetic sides content of the other sides, like unsymp Virgil, or unsymp Patton grew because people wanted to see how the dynamics would change and so forth.

But to put it simply, the sympathetic Deceit tag was originally made to give fanders a place to find content with a good noodle. Even with the knowledge of his name now, some fanders are still adamant on him being evil. so the tag is a “safe heaven” for those who feel icky and sad if they see unsymp Janus stuff.

In all honestly you don’t really need to tag the sympathetic things on normal posts (I just do it out of habit), the unsympathetic tags are more important as that kind of characterisation can make people feel icky and most people have the tags blacklisted to avoid that kind of content.

Sympathetic is pretty much how you take their canon characterisation, unsymp could be them being abusive, toxic or evil.

Hi, I've talked to you a few times on the subreddit and I've really admired your dedication to the fandom and patience with questions. I also really like your fanfiction. I've been in the fandom since around 2014, but most of my "Baccano Friends" are people I know irl that I got into the show. Do you have any tips for making friends in the fandom? Sometimes you just wanna wax poetically about Maiza or Huey at length to someone else who understands

I recognized your blog name immediately. Welcome to Tumblr and the Tumblr-based Baccano! fandom! This is where many of the active content creators congregate, a good number of whom have read or are familiar with the light novels. In short, you’re definitely among “people who understand.”

Small fandoms like this one are also not only inclined to notice new faces, but actively welcome them; the more people who can contribute fresh content, the better, eh?

Let’s start by reviewing the basics of Tumblr. Tumblr is a platform that hosts people’s blogs. You can follow people whose blogs catch your interest so that their posts will appear on your dash. Once I post this reply, I will follow you; you should receive a notification (which you can check in your activity log) informing you of this.

My full response is under the cut on account of length (typical), but honestly, it really all comes down to engagement. How can a lurker make friends on a social site if they don’t participate? On Tumblr, you put yourself ‘out there’ by creating content and/or engaging with other people’s content.

Summary of the tips below the cut:

Follow people so that the content they post and reblog appears on your dash. People will in turn follow you if you post/reblog content in their bailiwick. It’s a two-way street. Also follow the #Baccano! and #Baccano tags! Checking out tags is often how people find new content and new people to follow, so remember to tag your own content accordingly. Note that only the first 5 tags on a post are indexed for Tumblr searches.

When it comes to fan works (fanart, fanfics, gifs), the creators of fan works love knowing what you think. Share your thoughts via a reblog, reply, and/or in your tags (ideally try to leave proper comments/reviews on fanfics on AO3/FFN or in a reblog).

Given Tumblr’s bias toward visual content, fanfics can especially depend on reblogs to increase their visibility.

Practical tip: use tags to categorize your posts; this will be helpful for others and for you to sort through posts on your blog. Including misc. thoughts in tags is common practice on Tumblr, by the way, and a large number of people will actively check tags for comments.

Engage with other people’s text posts. When you reblog someone’s headcanon, theory, analysis, appreciation post (etc), don’t be shy--respond to the points being made, and add your own. Participate in discussions! Discussions aren’t just Reddit’s thing.

Reblogs don’t show up in tags; original posts do. Writing your own posts (creating content) is the other big way of putting yourself out there. People who follow the Baccano! tags will encounter your content, and, if they like it, might be inclined to follow you.

I think you’ve already picked up on this, but sending people asks is a good way to get to know them and introduce yourself! You can get a sense of people’s favorite characters or likes/dislikes from their content, and people usually like talking about their faves, so I’m sure Huey fans would be pleased to receive Huey asks.

Not everyone is necessarily comfortable with receiving instant messages from people they’re not familiar with (IM was only introduced as a feature a couple years ago, IIRC); they might say as much in their blog description or about page.

On that note, write a blog description/’about me!’ Let people who visit your blog know who you are. You can choose a blog theme for additional customization (I have an ‘about me’ module on my blog proper), but the basic description should suffice.

Although some people never develop their blogs in ‘site-form’ (i.e. choose a theme besides the default dash version), many others do, so don’t forget to check out people’s blogs as external sites; they might have tag indexes, links to featured content, and other fun stuff you wouldn’t know about if you only ever access their blogs via the dash.

Liking content is nice. Like + Reblogging is better. Reblogging with tags (practical categorization + a remark or comment or two)? Better still. Replies? Good. A tagged reblog in which you directly respond to the person’s points and add additional thoughts of your own? 

Now we’re talking. Literally. If you show interest in what others have to say--and have a fair bit to say in your own right--they’ll reciprocate. Contribute, engage, share.

(Oh, before I forget, I suggest you make use of XKit, a browser add-on that enhances Tumblr much in the same way RES enhances Reddit. I think XKit has had some issues on account of Tumblr updating the dashboard, but still, it has a lot of helpful extensions that make my Tumblr experience better.)

(Of course, most blogs don’t exclusively post about one subject; unlike Reddit, where you curate subjects that appear on your home feed according to subreddits, Tumblr’s dashboard displays user-chosen content; content that the individual you follow has created or reblogged.)

Step 1: Follow people whose content you enjoy and want to see more of.

You can like posts, reblog posts (publicly share posts with or w/o adding your own commentary), and reply to posts (comment on a post without sharing it). You can also tag posts.

Tags are helpful ways to categorize your posts. An organized tagging system will not only help you find specific posts on your blog, it can help others who want to see specific content you’ve reblogged in the past. The main tags for the Baccano! fandom are #Baccano! and #Baccano. You can follow those tags for ease of access. 

One aspect of Tumblr culture is that tags aren’t only used for categorization purposes; you commonly see people including little quips or thoughts or comments in tags that, for whatever reason, they did not want or feel the need to write as an overt reply or ‘formal’ reblog response.

I’ll come back to this use of tags soon. First...

“Do you have any tips for making friends in the fandom?”

The most succinct answer would be, I think, engagement. Well, if pressed, I’d say content creation and content engagement, but ‘engagement’ is the fundamental facilitation of friendship.

As we’ve already seen, you can engage with content (visual or text) through likes (most passive) reblogs (semi-passive w/o commentary, active w/contribution), replies, and tags (quiet engagement). As you’ve discovered already, you can privately, directly engage with people via sending them asks or instant messages. 

(Note that ‘asks’ predate instant messaging on Tumblr by many years, and not everyone will be comfortable with receiving surprise instant messages from ‘strangers’. Sometimes people will specify their preferences in their blog description or ‘about’ blurb.)

Sending people questions like you’ve done to me is a fine way to get to know them. Most fans love talking about their favorite characters, so sending a Huey-based question to a Huey fan will probably go over well, hah! Sometimes people will reblog fandom-based ‘ask memes’ (posts that contain pre-written questions from which anyone can choose a question or two to send); if you see someone do this, shoot them a question!

(Don’t take it personally if they don’t immediately respond, or, uh, ever. I’m not saying this because I have a few ‘ask meme’ questions in my inbox and drafts that are, um, a few years old, ah hah ha...if someone doesn’t answer, I guarantee it’s simply because they’re busy or they forgot.)

(OR because Tumblr simply did not deliver your ask. This has been a longstanding issue with Tumblr; I’m not sure if it’s less of an issue these days, but I’ve had to deal with this issue on both sides multiple times in the past: both as someone whose asks were not delivered, and as someone who did not receive asks others said they had sent.)

Speaking of ‘about’ blurbs, I suggest writing a blog description. Let the fandom know who you are! Passively liking posts might catch people’s radar in the sense of, “Oh, this person has liked several of my Baccano! posts--perhaps they’re a Baccano! fan?), but it’s not quite ‘putting yourself out there’. Nor is reblogging without commentary, or even tags.

For visual content like fan art, gifs, and videos, I encourage you to reblog and try to leave a nice comment or two in your tags, or even as a reply or in the reblog itself. I don’t think anyone expects a person to ‘comment-tag’ on every piece of fan art they reblog, but making a general effort can go a long way.

For fanfiction, I highly encourage you to reblog it and, as with fan art, at minimum leave a comment or two in the tags. (I especially, however, would encourage above all else comment/review on the fanfics you like on AO3/FFN, or, if you’d prefer, in the reblog.

I think people underestimate how often creators of fan works will check the 'notes’ on their own posts. Hell, I’ve delved into the notes + tags of other people’s fan works (or other content) just to see what others have to say.

People have thanked me/expressed appreciation for compliments on their fan art before (via tags, or replies, or reblogs), so--yeah, assume by default that people check or notice.

Similar to how fanfic writers will refresh their inboxes in the hopes of comments or reviews (I speak from experience), I might return to check new reblogs of my fanfics (but sometimes also meta posts!) to see if the rebloggers said anything in their tags (since most don’t actually review or comment on the fics). Anyway.

But the fandom on Tumblr isn’t only producing fan works. You may have already stumbled upon some of the headcanon posts, theory/speculation posts, analyses, and discussions (reblog chains) they’ve subsequently spawned. (Tip: you can check the notes on a post to see if any interesting additional commentary was said in the reblogs. I recommend doing this!)

Engage with those ideas! Put forth your own! Don’t be afraid to jump into a discussion (chain of reblogs) and share your own thoughts. If you love someone’s headcanon--heck, if it inspires you--say so, bounce off a few additional thoughts. If you disagree with an opinion or ‘take’ or whatnot, I think the fandom is capable of handling respectful debate. 

Find an analysis or write-up compelling? Were there specific points someone said that ‘blew your mind’--they had an insight that never occurred to you, made you see a character in a new light, and so on? Let them know. Have thoughts you’d like to add? Add them.

(Edit: Lest I forget, there’s also the news/canon material side of fandom: where fans share updates on Narita’s status, share official media or merchandise, and translations if available. Reblogging these sorts of posts is a helpful way of spreading the good word. Let the translators know their efforts have not gone to waste and you appreciate said effort. Also respect their wishes; of the fan-translators still active in the fandom, I known none who want the fan TL pdfs to be publicly circulated now that there’s an official release.)

This is where I’d encourage content creation in your own right. You follow people whose content or thoughts you’d like to see more of...but this is a two-way street. Now, I’ve followed people who do mostly reblog Baccano! content without creating their own content or even commenting on the content they’re reblogging--because, you know, small fandom--but it isn’t reblogs that appear in the tags you’re searching for. Only original posts appear in those tags.

So you can put yourself out there by actively engaging with people’s posts (reblogging with additional commentary or thoughts, replies, don’t forget tags)...but writing/creating your own posts is another major way of putting yourself out there. I’m sure people will be interested in what you have to say, and I’m sure you have interesting ideas or interpretations (etc) to be shared.

It can be as simple as talking about your favorite characters (why you like them, what you think about them; different users on Tumblr have different favorite characters, as you’ll get a feel for the more you engage with their content), sharing headcanons, sharing your interpretation of certain scenes. Just as you’ll 'get to know’ people through their content (favorite characters, arcs, what they like/dislike), they’ll get to know what you like in turn. And hey! They’ll probably follow you back.

Unlike Reddit, Tumblr doesn’t ‘lock’ posts after a certain amount of time has passed. I don’t think you have to worry about necroposting (i.e. feel like reviving old discussions or responding to old posts might be ‘weird’ or ‘bothersome’); these ideas were posted publicly for the purpose of people seeing them and (presumably) engaging with them. Just as fanfic writers might be delighted to receive comments on their old fics, Baccano! fans probably are more inclined to welcome new insights/fresh engagement with their content than eschew it.

Small fandom, after all. New faces are more likely to be noticed than in big fandoms, but usually in a good way; we like having new people to contribute to the content pool, haha. You’ll start recognizing certain urls simply by spending time in the fandom; the same people are likely to pop up in the notes.

Basically, if you engage with other people’s ramblings, they just might ramble back. Heh. Despite Tumblr’s bias towards visual content--fanart, gifs, memes, videos are all easy to digest on a dash, easy to engage with and reblog, it has text-based content and discussions just like Reddit. Both sites thrive from user engagement; no matter what site you’re on, you won’t make any friends as a lurker.

You also shouldn’t have to worry about gatekeeping or anything of that sort. We’re too small a fandom to survive gatekeeping, so thus far I’ve not seen much of it. Luckily for you a high number of us have read the source material, but not everyone is caught up to Vol 22 (or is necessarily familiar with the other media)--and that’s fine. Just be respectful when engaging with content and when expressing your ideas, and you’ll probably get along with people fine.

Somebody Else (Changkyun Short Story || Part 2)

Pt.1 ||

Warning: some smut; will label parts accordingly.

“You’re in love with somebody else. Maybe I can offer some help; get over them by getting under me…”

“Y/N,” Changkyun’s voice is a low whisper, “Stop…” he pulls away and looks at her.

Y/N is breathless and her nose and lips are red from the blood flow to her face, “What?”

“I- I don’t want to do this while you’re sad. It’s-it’s not right,” He sits up, turning his back to her slightly, “I’m not that kind of guy.”

She bites her lip, embarrassed and feeling rejected- for the second time tonight. 

“Yeah, I understand…” She sits up and avoids looking him in the eye, “it would probably end up being a stupid mistake anyway…” 

He looks at her, disappointed by her words.

“Just go to sleep. I’ll take the couch…” He says, standing up and walking over to a small closet and taking out a pillow and some blankets.

She nods silently, pulling back the covers, but pauses before getting in,

 “Do you have any clothes I can borrow? This dress is uncomfortable,” She says.

He briefly glanced down at the dress; clinging to her body, every curve outlined perfectly- too tight to dance in, too short for church. 

“Yeah…” He looks away quickly, trying to keep his word.

He walks to his bed and bends down to open one of the built-in drawers. He focuses all his attention on taking out a shirt and sweats; trying desperately to ignore that her smooth, toned legs were so close to his face, and if he were to look up-

“Here,” He stands up quickly, and hands her the clothes.

She nods and grabs the clothes from him, still trying not to look him in the eyes.

“Thanks.”

He lets out a deep sigh and drops onto the bed after he hears the bathroom close. 

“What the hell…” He mutters in disbelief as he replays their kiss.

Picking up his phone, he unlocks it to find a bunch of notifications from the groupchat with Shownu and Kihyun, and then some from Jooheon.

Shownu: Did you see the post?

Kihyun: Dude… wth is going on? They’ve known each other for like what? A week?

Shownu: It may as well be a week.

Kihyun: Poor Y/N… 

Shownu: Changkyun, where are you?

He sighs, exiting the chat. He can’t deal with them right now… He taps on Jooheon’s conversation.

Jooheon: Are you okay? You seemed weird on the phone. I wanted to invite you out for drinks, on me. Help me celebrate, asshole

Changkyun rolls his eyes and tosses the phone across the room to the couch. 

When the bathroom door opens, he looks up.

If he wasn’t already having a hard time holding it together… he definitely is now.

His shirt is big on her, and goes just past her finger tips in length- and the sweats…are in her hand.

He swallows and looks down, trying to pretend not to notice, “Sweats didn’t fit?” 

She shakes her head, “No, but it’s find- I’m wearing my own shorts,” She raises the shirt up slightly to show him the tiny shorts she’d been wearing under her dress.

He nods, “Cool. Toss ‘em to me, I’ll wear them.”

She nods and then pauses for a moment, “Changkyun,”

He looks back up at her, “Yeah?”

“Catch,” She balls up the pants and launches them at his face, more forcefully than one might imagine for just a pair old sweats.

“Hey!” He laughs.

She smiles and crawls into his bed, “You’re welcome.”

And just like that, the awkwardness and confusion seemed to dissipate between them.

He chuckled softly as he walked over to turn the lamp off.

“Good night…” He says into the darkness.

“Good night, Changkyun…”

Sun pours in, shining on Changkyun’s closed lids. “Mm…” He whines, slowly coming out of his sleep.

He blinks a few times, adjusting his eyes to the harsh light. He gets up and walks to the window, irritatedly sliding them closed. 

Looking over at the bed, he notices it’s empty. He looks over and sees the bathroom door closed, and he assumes she’s probably inside. 

He sits back down on the couch, and rubs his face. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees the t-shirt he’d let Y/N borrow the night before, folded neatly and placed on the bedside table. 

“Huh?” He walks over to the bathroom and knocks on the door. When he hears no answer, he turns the knob slowly and opens it up;

Empty.

He scratches the back of his neck and walks over to get his phone from the floor next to the floor. Three missed calls from Jooheon, one text from Y/N.

He opens up her text first.

Y/N: Hey- had to go take care of some stuff. I didn’t wanna wake u but dnt worry, caught an uber. Ttyl.

Sighing, he moves on to the missed calls from Jooheon. He braces himself for the call; Jooheon’s always been a morning person.

The phone rings once, twice, and on the third, Jooheon answers- as expected, his voice is chipper and riddled with excitement.

“Finally, dude!”

It makes Changkyun want to gag.

“Hey…you called?”

“We’re gong to breakfast.”

“I’m not sure I’m really up to it-”

“Shut the fuck up. We’re going. Get dressed, I’m on my way,” Jooheon hangs up before he can say anything else.

“Ugh…” He groans and tosses his phone next to him. 

He lazily throws on some clothes and stares at himself in the mirror as he brushes the alcohol out of his mouth. Though he isn’t hungover, he feels like trash. 

His phone lights up and he picks it up;

Jooheon: I’m outside.

Changkyun rolls his eyes and shoves his phone and keys in his pocket before walking out of his apartment.

Jooheon talks the entire way to the Denny’s Diner. He goes on about his fiance; the details of how he proposed, her reaction… a bunch of things Changkyun can’t quite bring himself to care about, because all he can think of is Y/N crying her eyes out last night at the bar.

“Are you okay, man?” Jooheon stares at him from across the table.

Changkyun looks down at the mug of black coffee in front of him.

“Jooheon…I want to be excited for you…”

Confusion fills Jooheon’s face, “What do you mean you ‘want to be’ excited for me?”

Changkyun brings the mug up to his face; the smell alone begins to wake him up. 

“You’re my best friend. I love you, man. I want no more than to cheer for you, and tell you that I’m happy for you- but you’ve only known this girl for a few months- don’t you think you’re going a little fast?” 

Jooheon stares back incredulously, “I mean, sure we haven’t known each other for a long time, but love doesn’t know time-”

“Don’t give me that shit,” Changkyun rolls his eyes.

“What shit? I love her. She loves me. I want to marry her- and either you’ll support me, or you won’t. It’s not like we’re hurting anyone-”

Changkyun slams the mug down on the table, and the few people eating around them turn to look toward their table.

“You know damn well that at least one person is hurt by the decision you’re about to make,” His eyes are filled with disdain for his best friend- a friend he’s starting to feel he no longer recognizes.

Jooheon leans back in his seat, “I don’t know who you’re talking about.”

Lies.

“Oh really?” He leans forward, “Then tell me…why was Y/N the only one you didn’t tag in your engagement post, huh?”

Jooheon’s expression is a cross between guilty and sad, “I…forgot.”

More lies.

“Bullshit.” 

“Look, I didn’t invite you out here for you to bash me. Don’t I deserve to be happy? This is the biggest commitment I’ve ever made- shouldn’t I get to enjoy it?” Jooheon’s feeling sorry for himself, and it disgusts Changkyun.

“Then let me save you the money and leave now,” He gets up and throws a twenty down onto the table, “I’ll talk to you another time.”

At the bar last night, Changkyun wanted to take Y/N’s pain away- and if yelling at Jooheon is anything close to that, then he’ll do it.

Y/N sits, biting her nails as the anxiety builds in her chest. She’s non-confrontational by nature. If there’s a way to avoid argument or disagreement, she’ll do anything to do so- but this is one confrontation she can’t run from. Not this time…

“Y/N?” Jooheon asks, surprised to see her sitting on the floor outside of his door. He’s carrying bags of groceries, and his keys are in hand, ready to unlock the door.

“H-Hey Jooheon,” She puts on a small, fake smile.

He notices, but pretends not to, “What brings you here today?” He’s trying to sound casual, but he’s nervous. 

“I uhm…actually wanted to talk to you about something.”

He nods, not looking up at her, “Alright…come in.”

He unlocks the door and leads her into his apartment. It’s much bigger than Changkyun’s, and the furniture is a little more sleek, “What’s up?” 

He won’t meet her eyes, and she can tell he’s tense.

“I won’t be long… I just…I need to get this off of my chest…” She stands in front of him, and this time, he has no choice but to look her in her face…and what he sees in her eyes, breaks his heart.

“I’ve loved you for most of our lives. Everyone knows it. And even though we’ve never talked about it, Jooheon…I know you’ve known for a long time as well…”

“Y/N, I-”

“Don’t interrupt. I need to get this out.

I’m not telling you this because I’m expecting you to choose between her or me. In fact, I’m positive that you’d choose her, and that you’ll choose the next girl, and the girl after that.

I don’t want to be in denial anymore.

And I don’t want you to feel like you have to hide or tiptoe around because of me.

I just want you to know…” Tears well in her eyes.

Though the words coming out of her mouth are painful to speak, they’re equally freeing as well.

Jooheon’s heart is heavy, and he wants to hold her in his arms the way he usually would during a difficult moment.

“I want you to know that…I’m letting you go.”

Her heart feels immediately lighter than before.

Jooheon opens his mouth to say something, but she quickly turns around and walks out of the door before he can utter a single word. 

She doesn’t want to hear it.

Just like Jooheon, she’s made a choice as well;

herself.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“Coming!”

Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock.

“Dammit, I said I’m coming!”

Changkyun swings the door open, ready to snap at whoever dares to disturb the peace and quiet.

And there she is.

“Y/N?” He asks, confused.

Without a word, she quickly walks in and shuts the door behind her. 

He’s about to say something else, but before he can, she’s crashing her lips against his- and this kiss is different from last night’s;

It’s passionate, messy-

feverish.

He can’t think, can’t rationalize…

all that exists is her body pressed against him and her hands entangled in his hair.

“Changkyun...fuck me,” Her breathless whisper triggers a part of him that last night, he was able to successfully contain,

but now, he’s sober minded and the taste of her tongue in his mouth is too delicious to ignore any longer… 

“We can skip the wine and dine, go straight for the wind and grind; she wanna come, I can make it happen- fuck trying.”

We Need to Talk About SJM

I was recently anonymously asked what exactly my issue with Sarah Jane Maas is, and ended up writing what was essentially a thesis paper about it. Unfortunately, Tumblr pulled a Shitty Website move and deleted everything I wrote under the ‘read more’ tab, so I’m compiling my reasons here on a masterpost, for your reading leisure.

Reason 1: She preaches messages that no young girl needs to (or should) hear.

Granted, I know the a lot of the YA genre are adults who are no strangers to smut and aren’t phased by toxic behavior in characters. But on the same token, a lot of the YA genre is fueled by young girls age 12-20. Now I’m not going to sit here and pretend like girls in that age range aren’t reading/writing smutty fanfiction or dating. I know they do, I did, most of my friends did. But at that age, young girls are still trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be, including in terms of relationships. That’s where my problem with Maas comes in.

Maas writes, almost exclusively, toxic relationships - at best. Straight up abusive at worst. At one point in ACOTAR, I had to put the book down because I was so disgusted by what happened. Rhysand assaulted Feyre. I’m not kidding. He kissed and groped her against her will, telepathically asked whether she was wet about it, and wondered aloud what she looked like naked. The entire goal of doing this was to piss Feyre’s then-boyfriend off, and for Rhysand to assert his dominance as a Fae lord or whatever the fuck (y’know, like rapists do). Feyre was left shaking, nauseated, and scared for her life. But the worst part? It was written like this was something sexy and desirable. Literal penetration was all that stopped this from being a horrifying rape scene, and I couldn’t believe Maas wrote about it like some hot erotica. It wasn’t romantic. It wasn’t cute. It was disgusting, violating, and I was furious when I read it (especially given Feyre actually ends up with Rhysand eventually. What the fuck).

In Throne of Glass - and subsequent sequels - there are couples (namely Rowan and Aelin) who quite literally spit on each other, punch each other, and bite each other. No, not “love nip” bite, I mean “I’m trying to tear your skin off” bite. But we’re meant to believe they’re endgame, meant to be, and a totally healthy relationship. Let’s not even get into emotional abuse and manipulation, because holy fuck does every single character in these books act like a goddamn villain if we were to go over that in detail. All you need to know is that “if you don’t do xyz then I’ll leave and never come back” “what made you think I cared about you? You’re nothing to me. Just kidding, I love you” and similar sentiments are rampant in these series.

While we’re here, what is up with this “mates” nonsense? Every character pairing we see by the end of the ToG series has a “mate,” and swears off everyone they’ve had before, claiming them to be “false mates.” This whole “mates” business sounds a lot like somebody desperately trying to reassure their insanely jealous partner that they don’t still have feelings for their ex. That’s not healthy! That’s not okay! Your exes helped you narrow down your search. They helped you understand yourself more and what you want (or don’t want). And y’know what? It’s okay to have happy memories with an ex. It’s okay to not hate your ex. Telling young girls that all that matters is their future husband (which erases LGBT+ girls, as well as straight women who don’t want to get married) is harmful as hell, and contributes to the idea that a girl is only “complete” when she finds her “soulmate.”

Girls 12-20 really do not need to be given the message that it’s normal - nay, romantic - for their partners to hit them, humiliate them, or assault them. You may be saying, “Clara, come on, girls know fiction isn’t reality and no girl is actually going to stand for that kind of thing in real life.” But I can’t tell you how horribly my own view of relationships was corrupted for several years after all the books I read as a tween where the protagonist had to defend her flirty boyfriend from the advances of other girls. I didn’t trust boys not to cheat on me. I didn’t trust my girl friends not to try and steal a boyfriend. I thought girls who dressed up and wore makeup and dated a lot were sluts. It took me years of conscious effort to unlearn those ideas. Fiction can and does influence the reader. So again I say: teaching girls that it’s “hot and sexy” when men literally abuse you is not a message a 12-20 year old should be hearing. Ever.

Reason 2: What exactly does Maas want her readers to be?

Y’know, Maas thinks Caelena/Aelin is a role model for young girls. But here’s a brief list of things Celery/Alien has done throughout the Throne of Glass series:

1. Tried to smash a flower pot over a girl’s head for showing interest in courting Prince Dorian. Despite said girl literally being present at the castle for that purpose and Caelena was not.

2. Very nearly murdered Dorian for absolutely fuckall reason, and then she got mad at Chaol for trying to stop her (keep in mind: Chaol and Dorian are supposed to be best friends. So like... yeah, he’s gonna come to Dorian’s defense).

3. Straight up said, “if I get bored being queen I’ll just go and conquer more lands for my kingdom.” Imperialist there much, Aelin?

This is Maas’ role model material? Half the shit she does from Heir of Fire onward could be described as “war crime” and the other half could be described as “selfish.” Maas seems to think that a shit ton of half-baked “witty” lines and a few “badass” fight scenes completely makes up for having an amoral character as the protagonist you want to flaunt around as an icon for young girls.

It would be one thing if Maas said, “I don’t want anyone to be like Celery/Alien. She’s not a good person and I want my readers to be able to identify how and why she isn’t a good person. The moral is what not to be like.” But she does the opposite and claims time and time again that Celery/Alien is some kind of feminist warrior, when in fact Celery/Alien is the very epitome of white feminism and false feminism. She’ll be all kinds of gung-ho for herself, but as soon as another woman mentions her own unique problems or lifestyles, Celery/Alien thinks she’s a “whiny bitch,” “dumb slut,” or something similar. Celery/Alien ends up looking down her nose at basically every other female character. The lack of female friendships in Maas’ books is frankly astounding.

No girl needs to be Celery/Alien. Celery/Alien is not a role model, she is not a feminist, she is not a figurehead of a well developed female character or even a compelling antihero. She’s sexist, she’s misogynistic, she has serious anger issues, she’s manipulative, she’s abusive. This is not who young girls should be looking up to.

Reason 3: Maas has no place in the YA genre.

I’m not really sure I need to elaborate much on this. Let me give you a scenario:

Imagine you’re at a book signing for your fans. They’re mostly girls 15-20, so you kind of just sign their copies without thinking much about it. But then a smaller girl comes up to the table, you ask her age, and she says “I’m ten.” A 10 year old girl is standing in front of you, clutching her copy of your book where you wrote and published the scene, “he buried in to the hilt and roared. Over and over he spilled inside of her, the lightning outside flashing soft and lovely long after he stilled.”

Look me in the eye and tell me that shit is appropriate in the YA genre. At all. Ever.

You wanna write romance? Go for it. It can be cute! It can be healthy! It can be intriguing! But this? This? This is just... erotica. If you’re publishing stuff like this in the YA genre, in a book that isn’t even on the ‘tween/teen romance’ shelves, then you better be ready to take full responsibility for teaching 10 year olds what a blowjob is, what an orgasm is, what BDSM is, what a fucking foot fetish is.

I know JK Rowling isn’t the most popular right now, but even she did better than this. The first 3 Harry Potter books you can generally find on the children’s/middle grade shelves. They were cute, fun little adventures about wizards and magic and fantastic creatures. Books 4-7? Those are on the YA shelves. People are dying, magic is dangerous, fascist organizations are on the rise -- it isn’t fun for Harry anymore. It isn’t about the wonders of magic. It’s about life or death, war, and fear. So yeah, of course those book aren’t going to be on the children’s/middle grade shelves! They’re dark! They’re scary! That kind of material shouldn’t be advertised as appropriate for younger kids!

Maas never extended that courtesy. Maas took her books full of badly written erotica and plopped them down right where all the rest of the completely tame YA books went, because she wanted the sales. She didn’t care if she was exposing kids who were too young to explicit sex scenes. She never posted a disclaimer, she never posted any kind of warning on social media when the books came out. Nope. She just silently took advantage of the market knowing she’d get more sales in YA. But it has no place in YA. It’s not YA. And I don’t think I’m ever gonna be okay with that.

Reason 4: Diversity? Never heard of it!

Maas’ books are so incredibly white and straight that it’s painful. Rowan and Aelin? White and straight. Feyre? Rhysand? Chaol? Dorian? Manon? Hey, you guessed it! They’re all white and straight (despite Chaol, Dorian, and Manon being heavily LGBT+ coded for like, the entire series till the last book)!

“He looked at his friend, perhaps for the last time, and said what he had always known, from the moment they met, ‘I love you.’” (Queen of Shadows)

Hello? Sarah Jane? I’m all for male friendships, but there’s male friendships and then there’s actual romance. Chaol and Dorian are about as gay-coded as they could fucking get. And this isn’t even the only time this happens! Check this out:

“Dorian surged from his chair and dropped to his knees beside the bed. He grabbed Chaol’s hand, squeezing it as he pressed his brow against his. ‘You were dead,’ the prince said, his voice breaking. ‘I thought you were dead.’” (Queen of Shadows)

But wait, there’s more!

“‘I’m not leaving you. Not again.’

Dorian’s mouth tightened. ‘You didn’t leave, Chaol.’ He shook his head once, sending tears slipping down his cheeks. ‘You never left me.’” (Queen of Shadows)

I mean come on, Sarah!

Also, Manon. My girl Manon hated men, pretty explicitly, for the entire series. In case you don’t believe me:

“There were few sounds Manon enjoyed more than the groans of dying men.” (Heir of Fire)

Oh, and other characters even imply Manon has never had a heterosexual relationship in her fucking life. See:

“‘That golden-haired witch, Asterin...’ Aelin said. ‘She screamed Manon’s name the way I screamed yours. How can I take away somebody who means the world to someone else? Even if she is my enemy.’” (Queen of Shadows)

Tell me that’s not gay as fuck. I dare you.

Manon had a whole lot of love to give women! She was always affectionate towards other women. Particularly Elide. This is a woman who was about as lesbian as you could get. Had no interest in men, every interest in women, rejected typically expected roles for women (getting married and having kids, etc.) but guess what happened? Guess what fucking happened?

This warrior who was friends with and rode on a big fuckoff wyvern completely and totally submits to Dorian as her lover. I don’t mean that metaphorically. They literally do some BDSM shit where he’s her “master��� and she “kneels to him” or whatever the fucking fuck. This entire thing pissed me off more than Chaol and Dorian being all “no homo bro,” because Maas used every possible symbol and subtext for Manon being gay, and then said “just kidding!” Her relationship with Dorian came out of nowhere. All of a sudden she was just as thirsty for mediocre dick as Aelin.

At this point I honestly have to wonder if Maas is really this ignorant or if she’s - dare I say it? - taunting her readers who have complained about the lack of LGBT+ representation. Maas has, historically, not reacted well to people criticizing her work. I would not put it beyond her at all to intentionally queer-code characters only to turn around and rip the rug out from under her readers by pairing them up in heterosexual relationships. And not only is that shitty writing, but it’s... really malicious and rude.

Of course then there’s the issues with racial representation. Again, Maas doesn’t even try. She includes 13 characters of color only to immediately kill off all of them in a suicide pact. So there’s that. Not sure I need to say more than that.

Maas knows what diversity is, but as per her famous quote, “I just don’t want to force diversity into my books.” So. Y’know. Writing a black or gay character (or!! God forbid, both black and gay!!) is asking a little too much of her, apparently. She doesn’t want to force anything as unbelievable as someone who isn’t white or straight, don’tcha know? In these books about fae people and dragons and gods fighting mortals and explicit erotica, an LGBT+ character or a character of color is high fantasy, not YA. *Sarcasm*

Reason 5: The woman can’t write.

This is pretty straightforward. She cannot write. My proof? She plagiarizes the living fuck out of everything she can to avoid actually writing her own original work.

1. “You’re gonna rattle the stars.” - from Disney’s Treasure Planet

2. “The Queen Who Was Promised” - from GRRM’s ASOIAF, where Dany Targaryen is often toted as the exact same thing. Oh, and The Prince Who Was Promised prophecy in ASOIAF also mentions Azor Ahai being “the Heir of Fire” so, uh.... yeah.

3. Aelin basically being Aragorn. Lost royalty spends years as an outcast, denies their claim, teams up with elves (fae in Aelin’s case) to defeat a greater evil, becomes known as the people’s champion, falls in love with an elf (fae) and makes them their consort, crowned by the people, ends their coronation scene with a “you bow to no one” (I’m not kidding).

4. Nehemia dying for Aelin and it later being revealed that Nehemia was “grooming” Aelin to face great evil, and potentially give her life to stop it. How much you wanna bet Maas tried to give Aelin a name as close to “Harry Potter” as she could get?

5. Manon lighting a series of beacons across a mountain range to call for aid during war. I mean seriously? This is one of the most iconic scenes in Peter Jackson’s rendition of Lord of the Rings. It’s moving, it’s powerful, it’s awe-inspiring. And Maas knew it. So she just... took it. I don’t have a lot of respect for writers who can’t write their own moving scenes.

6. Kingsflame blossoms, which only bloom when the rightful monarch is on the throne. So... the White Tree of Gondor. Got it.

7. The Hand of the King being a royal court position. Like... jesus. GRRM, come get ya world-building, SJ stole it again.

8. A paralyzed Chaol has a specialized saddle made for him, because he wants more than anything to ride a horse again. GRRM! Please! She’s taking Bran Stark’s story now!

And besides all of these horribly plagiarized points, there’s nothing even slightly compelling about these books. There’s literally zero substance, and the last few books in both the ACOTAR and ToG series have been nothing but a smut-fest. Plot who? We don’t know her.

Trauma, both physical and mental, is erased at the drop of a dime (Aelin lost physical scars, Chaol’s paralysis was basically cured, series of events that should’ve left characters absolutely fucked just... didn’t phase them). The battles are rushed and sloppily written, and Maas has a particularly nasty habit of focusing on exactly the wrong people in the middle of what should be an action packed scene. Instead of showing alliances forging and plots being made behind people’s backs, instead of showing us people gearing up for battle by saying tearful goodbyes to their infants and spouses, Maas shows us Rowan and Aelin banging on a beach, or a tree, or a ship, or wherever the fuck they happen to be at that moment.

None of these characters lose jack shit. There is no sense of urgency or stakes, because we knew since Heir of Fire that Aelin and her precious uwu fae “mate” would be just fine. Why? Because nobody shipped Rowaelin as hard as Sarah Jane Maas did. Consistently the only people who suffer in these books are background characters (who, coincidentally, are almost always the characters of color and LGBT+ characters). By the end of Kingdom of Ash, literally everyone is fine. And paired off to be married, too! Because a happy ending isn’t a true happy ending if it doesn’t end with Babies Ever After and everyone in a heterosexual relationship, of course, right?

Reason 6: World-building doesn’t even go here! Sorry, she just wanted to be a part of something.

Maas’ world-building is... how do you say... shitty. New lore pops up in every book, having never been mentioned before, and is for some reason of utmost importance (but only for this book. It’ll be forgotten again as soon as it isn’t relevant). Religions who? Culture where? History what? None of these things exist in Maas’ world. None.

Now before anyone jumps down my throat with “but The World of Throne of Glass is coming out this year!!!1!1!!” let me gently establish something. Speaking as a fantasy author: if you do not have your most basic world-building - that being religion, culture, language, and history - already established, then you have no business making a “world of” book to cover all the bases your ass never bothered with in the original series.

I said what I said.

Tolkien and GRRM are masters of world-building because they spent decades working to forge their worlds before they ever put a pen to paper and wrote their stories. Not to toot my own horn, but my own fantasy series has been developing for almost 7 years now. What am I doing with it? I’m outlining governments in different societies, why people came to worship what they do, and I’m making a fucking world map on my bedroom floor (that now has cat paw prints on it, so it’s not exactly final product material anyway).

I give not a single hoot for Maas’ “The World of Throne of Glass.” She could be saying anything she wanted to and it would all just have to be canon, because she’s establishing what this world is after already finishing her series. Yes, it does piss me off, because it’s pretty obvious she didn’t have a clue what her world was, or who was who, or why things were the way they were. She made shit up as she went along, nothing more. There was no grand scheme. There was no planning, and it shows.

TL;DR: I have a lot of issues with Sarah J Maas’ writing, including her world-building and handling of diversity. But most of all I despise the potential impact she has on the YA genre and on the young girls reading her work. They deserve better than this. They deserve better than Sarah Jane Maas.
