#i understand why comics do reboots every now and again :D

About the readers dropping significantly, it seems like most series has had a reader drop of 40-60%, even though romance comics seem to doing just as well as before, they've had a significant drop too. This around April 2022. I think it has something to do with the pandemic. People passed, others simply have to work to make up for 2020 and 2021 lost work, some maybe lost loved ones, got depressed and distanced themselves from everything they enjoyed during the pandemic.
I broke my leg last fall (pun not intended, or is it?), and I thought it'd be a perfect time to read lots of manga and WebToons.... But I just couldn't bring myself to do it and instead watched day in and day out of Sims building videos, and I still have lots of series to catch up with, I don't blame others for going through the same. Also new things, new Zelda, PS5 and Xbox, God of War, reboots of old shows, new shows, new WebToons every week, there's just so much! Not to forget the dumb war!
So while I miss those days of people crawling all over WebToons, looking for a new favourite, binging etc. Do I understand why the drop happened. No creator (that I know of) did anything wrong, there's just this overwhelming overflow of things going on. Maybe someday, people will sit down on their bed, tired, in need of some trills, recognise the WebToon app and go "oh yeah! What was going on with these!" And fall in love with WebToons all over again..!
Been sitting on this one a couple of days trying to figure out how to best respond.
Because I definitely know this is a huge part of it. I also know that it's so much harder for a comic to stand out among the ocean of launches WT did last year. I also know it's just hard to keep someone's attention for 130+ episodes and 4 years. And I also know that it's kind of a miracle my comic does as (okay) as it does now. *knocks on wood*
I know all these factors and can easily tell you them all on a good day. The problem is, it's really hard to remember them on bad days. :'D Your post says it's no creator's fault, but hoo boy it's hard for me to remember that on bad days. The other thing I'm aware of is that a lot of my anxiety and sadness around my comic is definitely a me problem, because when I start spiraling, I absolutely can't remember all the factors in my first paragraph. It's something I'm working on.
All in all, ty for the kind words and reassurance. I hope other creators who are more affected by this decline realize all this too, because like you said, it's pretty much everyone and it can be so hard to not blame yourself.

(requested by mathmaticalknight) TOURNAMENT ARC
Nearl was in her room, tending to her equipment, when there was a knock on her door. âI wonder who that might be...Maria?â
âSister!â Blemishine wrapped her arms around Margaretâs neck and pulled her in for a close and loud hug (armor plates). âIt took me forever to find someone who knew the way to your place, but youâre actually here!â
âWhen did you get her, Maria? I thought you and Zofia were still working out the details.â
The other Nearl simply beamed at her. âShe said sheâd be here soon and that I could go ahead. Itâs a good thing I did, too - there are posters all over saying youâre fighting someone today. Is that true?â
âI am, yes,â she confirmed. âThe Doctor organized a tourney for Operators in all positions to prove themselves, if they so desire.â
âAre you gonna go easy on them, or is the Radiant Knight going to be fighting in a new venue?â The look on Mariaâs face was a blend of concern and excitement - after all, itâs not every day she got to see her sister fight.
The older Nearl thought about it for a moment before going for another hug. âMy opponent is my sparring partner, and I know she will be giving this fight her all. It would be a dishonor not to do the same.â
âThen Iâll be watching you from the stands.â She sighed. âNext time I see you, though, can we hug without all this metal in the way?â
âIf youâd like, you can come to dinner with me.â Margaret hadnât had the chance to âproperlyâ introduce her to her girlfriends, after all.
Blemishine nodded. âThat sounds good to me...Alright, you need to finish preparing for your fight, so Iâm going to find the Doctor. I heard thereâs an Engineering Department here, and I want to go talk to them before the match. Good luck!â
âThank you, Maria.â As the shining knight left, the Radiant Knight returned to her maintenance. âTonight, however, luck will not be a factor.â
TOURNAMENT ARC: NEARL VS HOSHIGUMA (continuing...sort of from this [I keep forgetting which ships are already established in some of this multiverse soup going on; canât make it a direct continuation because of the first fic in that two-part series, but Tourney!RI still has a horse triumvirate nonetheless. ANYWAY.])
âââ
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, Operators, Staff, and Esteemed Guests! Welcome one and all to the Top Operator Tourney!!! *crowd cheers*
âThanks, Hung! I love how consistent he is with that...Anyways, hi! Youâre probably wondering why weâre here-â
âWe should introduce ourselves first, Swire.â
âGood point, good point. Well, Iâm Swire, aka Hoshiâs biggest fan, and here with me in the commentatorâs booth is Meteor. Youâre Nearlâs girlfriend, right?â
âThat is why Iâm here, yes. I appreciate the Doctor allowing us to do this, especially since you and I donât talk very often. Do you have the statistics in front of you? My tablet and I are having a fight.â
âYeah, Iâve got âem. *clears throat* So, looking at the numbers, my girlâs got the advantage when it comes to size, experience and stamina, but Nearl is faster, more tactical, AND sheâs got some serious Arts at her disposal. Hoshiâs got an uphill battle ahead of her, I say.â
âItâs important to note that Margaret Nearl and Hoshiguma both are in the top three seeds for the Defender bracket - first and third respectively - which means regardless of the apparent discrepancy, both are incredibly skilled combatants. Accounting for the amount of time they spend dueling each other to keep their skills sharp, and I suspect this fight will be much closer than the numbers would imply.â
âI certainly hope so! No offense, but I do want Hoshi to win this - if Nearl loses, youâre still in the tourney, after all.â
âThat is true...But weâll simply have to agree to disagree.â
âYeah. Well, letâs get to the action!...Also, why did you say her actual name rather than her codename?â
âââ
Hoshiguma and Nearl walked into the coliseum, fully prepared for the fight ahead of them. The Oni took up a defensive stance, holding her shield just above the ground and planting her feet. âWell, Marge, todayâs the day. Promise youâre not gonna hold back on me?â
âI swear by my honor as a knight: today, I will not stay my hand.â The Kuranta unsheathed her blade, already glowing beneath the bright lights above. âI entrust your life to the Medics of Rhodes Island. Ready?â
âItâs your time, not mine.â
A curious turn of phrase...With that, the fight was on.
Nearlâs first goal was knocking out that shield arm. Fixing amputations was something the Medics could do (at least, Aak and Warfarin could), but ideally she wouldnât have to do that much damage. She charged forward, feinted going one direction but bounded the opposite way, and swung for her opponentâs arm, lighting up her blade as she did with a dazzling gleam-
-only for Hoshi to pull her arm towards her body, forcing the Knight to clip the shield instead and feel the sting of her opponentâs Thorns. âYouâre taking this seriously. Good.â
âOf course I am.â The Kuranta had lost all her forward momentum thanks to the deflection, but that didnât stop her from spinning around; her next attack was an attempt to knock the Oniâs shield out of the way with her own before landing a sword stroke, once again lighting it up before the attack would land. âHyah!â
âGood try.â Rather than block the swing, Hoshiguma punched Nearlâs sword arm, taking the blade to her forearm but nevertheless crippling her opponent in the process. The counterattack sent the disarmed warrior backward and left Lungmenâs strongest with a choice: charge forward, get Hannya spinning, and go on the warpath? Stand her ground and do the same?
The Kuranta got to experience the answer firsthand as her opponent began to simultaneously spin her shield and run forward. âI canât let her hit me with that attack, whatever it takes...â Unfortunately, she didnât have enough time to get to her feet and get out of the way. There was only one option she could see...
âââ
âAlright, sheâs getting to her feet; sheâs not done yet, but damn Hoshiâs spinning Hannya as fast as she can.â
âMargaret, what are you doing?! Get out of the way!â
âSheâs holding her shield up with both hands- wait, that light-â
âGlasses on!â *flash* â...No!â
âThereâs no way sheâs getting up after that...Aak and Warfarin are making their way out. Hoshiâs tossed Hannya to the side and seems to be trying to help.â
âSheâs done enough.â
âMeteor, youâve seen some of the other fights-â
âThey didnât have my Margâret in them...Weâre done here, right?â
âYeah, thatâs all she wrote. Everyone at home, have a good night, and we should have FEater and Click back up here next time. Thanks for tuning in!...Iâm gonna make sure my co-host doesnât do something she regrets.â
âââ
By the time Meteor had made it to Medical, there was a small group in the waiting room. Platinum and Blemishine were talking cordially, Swire was talking to Ptilopsis at the desk, and Hoshiguma...Hoshiguma was there, in a chair, as stoic as sheâd ever seen her.
That stoicism didnât change when the huntress walked over to her and slapped her across the face.
âMiss Meteor,â Ptilopsis observed from her post; Swire had already turned around after hearing the sound, âviolence is not tolerated in the waiting room.â
âItâs alright, Tilly. I deserved it.â The Oni cracked her neck as she looked up at her attacker.
The Kuranta sat down next to her. âAt least you agree.â
âI didnât expect her to try and block me like that,â she continued with a sigh. âThe flash actually made it worse for her.â
âWhy did she do that? It makes no sense.â
At this point the other two Kuranta in the room walked over; Platinum immediately sat in Meteorâs lap for a chair-hug. âWe got here before she did, and they rolled her past us...â There was now a silver-haired puddle in the Sniperâs lap.
âAre all the fights in this tourney like this?â Maria shuddered. âThe sport is the same everywhere, I guess.â
âWell, the good news is, Nearlâs Arts were enough to stabilize herself,â Swire reported, joining the group and sitting on the opposite side of Hoshiguma, who immediately set her head on her shoulder.
The huntress, stroking her assassin-girlfriendâs hair, nodded. âThank you, Swire. Iâm sorry weâre meeting like this, Maria.â
âWeâll have a second chance at it when my sisterâs back on her-â At that moment, there was the distinctive sound of armor jangling from down the hall. âEh? One second.â
âIt hasnât been five minutes,â Hoshi muttered as everyone, including herself, stood up.
Sure enough, Blemishine walked around the corner with Nearlâs arm around her shoulder, gear beaten to shit but otherwise okay. âIâm taking her back to her room for a change of clothes, but she and the doctors both said sheâs good.â
âMaggie!â Platinum practically became her jacket with that hug. âIâm so glad youâre alright! Even Hoshiguma was worried.â
âIâm not surprised. My training partner proved herself the better fighter today.â The smile the Radiant Knight sent the Oniâs way literally made her take a step back.
Meteor continued the original thread. âYouâre feeling alright, though? Does it hurt anywhere?â
âThe soreness will remain for a few days, but no lasting damage, certainly.â She looked down at her armor. âNot to my body, at least. Maria, could you help me fix this later this week?â
âOf course I will!â Her sister already had some thoughts on how to stop something like the Spinning Shield of Death from doing so much damage again.
The Feline in the room, glad to hear the all-clear straight from the horseâs mouth, nudged her girlfriend. âGo on, I know you want to say something.â
âIâll talk to her later.â The Oni picked up her girlfriend. âLetâs go home.â
âHoshi?â Nearl called out to her, and she froze.
The moneycat in her arms answered for her. âYes, Nearl? Margaret, more specifically?â
âEither is fine.â Another warm smile. âThat was a good fight. Good luck in the rest of the tournament.â
â...Thank you, Maggie. Goodnight, everyone.â
New destination: the bar.

Static Shock: Shock to the System and Aftershock Review
âYou know what? 13 years ago, me and some friends sat in a restaurant all night and daydreamed about the kinds of stories we would tell if we had the chance. We wanted to expand the concept of superhero to include characters that kind of looked like us, who had some of the same background, experiences and dreams as we did. We wanted to create something fun that a new generation would respond to the same way we responded to our childhood heroes -and damn if we didn't succeed beyond my wildest dreams. Today, Static Shock is a household name with millions of fans of all ages (Is there stuff I'd do differently? Yeah, almost all of season four but why nitpick?) Static is the most successful thing I've ever helped create and I'm both proud and gratified that people have taken it into their hearts. âÂ
Dwayne McDuffie, Co-Creator of Static and Writer for Static Shock
This review is dedicated to Dwayne McDuffie and Robert L. Washington III.                            Rest In Power Static Shock is awesome. I grew up with the show watching it both first run on the WB and second run on Cartoon Network and loved it as much as I did other large parts of my childhood courtsey of DC like Batman the Animated Series, Teen Titans and both Justice League Shows. What makes this unique among the DC Properties is that Static wasnât really a big name when he got a show. He wasnât even part of the DC Universe.Â
See as I had no idea for probably a good decade, Static actually came from Milestone Comics, a company ran by and focused on african americans. The goal was understandable: While black heroes existed at the time, and there were some fantastic ones like Storm, Jim Rhodes and Steel... these guys werenât the center of their universes. The big faces of the big companies, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Iron Man, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash.. were white. So milestone was a shakeup of that with the main teams and heroes all being black, from Icon, an alien whoâd lived among man but rather than end up in kansas like say superman ended up imprinting on a slave woman centuries ago and has been with us since, who was encouraged by an energetic teenager named Rocket to put on a costume and do something with his powers and his community, Hardware, a tech genius who had his work stolen by a white asshole and wanted to fight back and BLood Syndicate, a group of gang members all caught in the âThe Big Bangâ, a huge fight between all of Dakota, the midwest city where the comics take place, that ended when the police released a bunch of experimental gas that gave them all super powers.Â
As most of you who have watched the show already know, this is where Static comes from. Static was the company making their own Spider-Man, i.e. a nerdy teenager who suddenly gets super powers, in this case Virgil Hawkins who at the prodding of a friend took a gun to The Big Bang to get revenge on a bully. .but ultimately couldnât go through with it, decided it wasnât him and got rid of the gun and ran.. and still ended up in it, becoming Static, a young hero dedicated to using his powers to fight other âBang Babiesâ.. a term that dosenât really sound that great and they really shouldâve thought through. But Phrasing aside the character was great and I look forward to reading more and only havenât because I have to buy the issues gradually, but DC is currently re-releasing the individual issues of Static, Icon, and Hardware weekly in anticipation of a reboot of Milestone Coming in May digitally on Comixology at only 2 bucks a pop, and rereleased the original print collections that were long out of print for 10 bucks each, though iâm getting static on itâs own since iâts really not that much less expensive as it only collects four issues while Icon and Hardware both collect 8, so I can wait a bit there on Hardware and already own Icon: A Heroâs Welcome.. and really need to review it at some point.Â
While Milestoneâs output was good, at least from the two books iâve read, with Robert Washinton III, who sadly not only ahs also passed but was fucking homeless for a while in the 2000â˛s.. what the actual hell, writing Static alongside Dwayne McDuffie, whose later moved onto animation writing tons of Static episodes all of them classics including the school shooting episode, the first three rubberbandman episodes and both Anasazi episodes. Point is it had good writers and artists and even had a distrbution deal with DC, so they had a leg up on the glut of other comic book companies.. but happened to start at the start of the comic book crash, a huge downturn in sales in the 90â˛s as the speculator boom, i.e. a bunch of people assuming every number one would be worth golden and silver age money, forgetting a character has to BUILD INTREST and this stuff takes time, and whose attempts to sell fast flooded the market with comics no one wanted,, caused the roof to cave in and with a bunch of assholes pegging milestone as a âCompany for black peopleâ rather than you know, a company trying to add fucking diversity and represntation to the comics industry, and that simply wanted a unvierse that was centered around people of color instead of white guys. The company eventually had to shut down, and was left to lisencing. This is where the show comes in. Producers HAD been trying to make shows based on Milestone for a while, as far back as the mid-90s and the company was was all for it but the closest it got was an x-men style team series using various characters whose first draft was terrible and whose second draft by Alan Burnett, a producer on various DC Animated shows whoâd go on to produce Static Shock, that McDuffie and others really liked but sadly did not get picked up. eventually though with presistance Static ended up getting a series and as I said McDuffie went on to write for it though he did not develop it. Some changes went into place naturally to make it work for an early 2000â˛s kids show and while iâll probably miss so since again, only read one issue as we go. But due to Milestone coming back my intrest was peaking, hence finally reading the copy of Icon I had to buy from the library years ago due to keeping it overdue but am now EXTREMLEY glad I own as iâts incredibly rare and really damn good, and wanting to read static, doing so lately since itâs finally on digtiial and again not too expensive. So join me as I give you a shock to the system and revisit this hell of a series to see if it holds up.. which just to cut that short it does and iâm only holding off binging MORE because I want the first two eps to be fresh enough in my head to review properly.. and also go over the various voice actors because thatâs a thing with me now and charcter co-creator dwayne mcduffie because heâs awesome.Â
As I like to do when covering a series first episodes, letâs run down the voice cast.Â
First up is an UTTER LEGEND, and I use the term voice acting legend a lot, and mean it every time and have good reason to use it when I say it, and Phil LaMarr is a GOD in the buisness, having done a metric ton of voice acting roles, and being easily the most proflific black voice actor in animation. Heâs also done some acting work, mostly in pulp fiction which I have not seen, but his true staying power and talent is in animation so hereâs just the roles I feel are most notable or may not be very notable but iâm bringing up anyway because itâs my list.Â
His roles besides Virgil include Lester Payton the Texas Ranger who showed up for one very good episode of king of the hill to be badass and show up the hickish, stupid and very punchable local Sheriff, Gearldâs obnoxious older brother Jamie O on Hey Arnold, Hermes Conrad from futurama, Carver from the Weekenders (PUT IT ON PLUS DISNEY), Axel Foley for exactly one bit in Clerks the Animated Series, but anyone whose seen it will know exactly which one, Micheal on the Proud Family, Black Vulcan on Harvey Birdman (In His Pants), Hector Con Carne and Dracula on Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and Evil Con Carne, Jack on Samurai Jack something I didnât know for decades (and I didnât know about the carver thing till today though iâts obvious in hindsight), John Motherfucking Stewart on Justice League and later Steel and Adult Static in the Unlimited seasons, Osmosis Jones on Ozzy and Drix, Bolbi Strogofski on Jimmy Neutron (And yes iâm just as shocked as you are.), Wilt on Fosterâs Home for Imaginary Friends, Marcus on Life and Times of Juniper Lee, Bull Sharkowski on My Gym Partner is A Monkey and Also a Sociopath Please Help God My Life is a waking nightmare..... okay the rest of that title is implied but we all watched the same show, we all know in our hearts that was the title
Moving on, he was also, and yes thereâs MORE: Maxie Zeus on The Batman, Philly Phil on Class of 3000, Both Robertsons AND Fancy Dan on the Spectacular Spider-Man, Jazz on Transformers Animated, Kit Fisto and Bail Organa on Star Wars the Clone Wars, Gambit and Bolivar Trask on Wolverine and the X-Men, Aquaman I, L-Ron and Green Beetle on Young Justice, J.A.R.V.I.S. and Wonder Man (Simon Williams) In Avengers: Earthâs Mightiest Heroes, Gabe and Carny on Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters (Really miss that game and have been snapping up what cards I can get lately), Baxter Stockman in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (And thereâs also an awesome photo of him with 2003 Baxter... the two best together in one place. I got chills), Dormammu (Iâve come to bargin) in various Marvel Shows, Noville in Mighty Magiswords, Zachâs dad Marcus in Milo Muprhyâs Law, Craigâs Douchey Brother Benard on Craig of the Creek, showing heâs clearly come full circle, And Mr. Scully on the Casagrndes. And given It took about two paragraphs to cover all of this, yeah, I MEANT legend.Â
Next we have Kevin Micheal Richardson as Virgilâs Dad Robert, and itâs the first time since I started introducing Voice Actors on a show that iâve overlapped. I already covered him during the second episode of legend of the three caballeros, but for the short version heâs also very acomplished, very damn good and I somehow missed he played the old blind guy in hey arnold> Needless to say the dude is awesome.Â
Virgilâs Sister Sharon is played by Michele Morgan who was in the rap group BWP and did some smaller roles outside of this the one exception being Juicy on the PJâs, which I have not watched much of but REALLY do not like, though iâll at least give it credit for being a decently long lasted black claymation sitcom at at time when there were, and hoenstly still arenât, many black animated shows.Â
Back to long casting sheets, next up is Jason Marsden, who is one of my faviorites as iâve realized recently as Ritchie. As I also found out only recently he started on the Sitcom Step By Step and while that show is .. ehhhhhhhhh, he is great in it because heâs great in everything. He also apparently has his own internet variety show which I have to watch now. His roles include Max Goof, ironically given I was just talking about that role a few days ago, Haku in the english dub of Spirted Away, Micheal, the kid being yelled at by a bunch of 80â˛s cartoons characters not to take drugs in Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue!, Nermal in the DTV Garfield movies and The Garfield Show, Tino on the Weekenders (SERIOUSLY DISNEY), Snapper Carr on Justice League, Rikochet on Mucha Lucha! for the last season (Why I do not knkow and while I love the guy he was not the right choice), Felix on Kim Possible, Chase Young on Xiaolin Showdown (WHich I did not realize was him and now I do easily his best role and I REALLY shouldâve), Red Star and Billy Numerous on Teen Titans, Speedy on Batman Brave and the Bold, Impulse/Kid Flash II on Young Justice, and Fingers on Kaijudo. He hasnât done as much lately which is a shame but hopefully iâtll pick up again.Â
Next up is Hotstreak, Virgilâs brutal bully turned unhinted pyromancer played by DANIEL COOKSY, another actor iâm happy to talk about and another faviorite I havenât seen much of lately. Daniel was an actor from childhood, playing Budnick on Salute Your Shorts, but he quickly gained a long and storied catalogue of VA Work: His first big roll was as Montana Max on Tiny Toon Adventures and if there is a god heâll be back for the reboot, Stoop Kid on Hey Arnold, the incomprable Jack Spicer on Xiaolin Showdown, far and away his best role and part of why Chronicles sucked so bad was he was he didnât get to reprise the role, The titular Dave the Barbarian, Django of the Dead on El Tigre (Had no idea), Kicks utterly insufferable big Brother Brad on Kick Buttowski and apparently heâs back at it again after laying low for a bit as heâs voicing Snag in Long Gone Gultch.. which I already really needed to watch but hot damn, I missed him. Sign me up.Â
Frieda, Virgilâs crush and close friend who in the comics was his main confidante and love intrest but here is eventually pushed aside, is voiced by Danica Mckeller whose work didnât seem all that familiar.. until I found out she was Ms. Martian on Young Justice. Hello, Megan. Very talented and she did get a major role in a dc show eventually so good for her. Canât wait for season 4.Â
So with our major players out of the way, letâs talk about Dwayne. McDuffie is an AWESOME man and my respect has grown for him more and more with time. A writer and editor at Marvel, McDuffie has a decent resume doing smaller but awesome books, which I got most of for free last year when Marvel was giving out free digital collections due to the lock down, like Damage Control, a sitcom set in the marvel universe about the company that picks up after superhero battles and the logistics and antics that insue and Dethlok, about a pacfist trapped inside a cyborg zombie. He was as mentioned one of Milestoneâs founders, and wrote Icon, Hardware and co-wrote the first few issues of Static. Heâd go on to a pretty stacked career in animation, writing on this show and Justice League before becoming story editor and show runner for Unlimited , even making a return to comics as a result writing the Marvel miniseries beyond and an arc of Fantastic Four in which Black Panther and Storm filled in for Reed and Sue while the two of them worked on their marriage after Reed did.. pretty much everything he did in Civil War. He also became head writer and show runner for Ben 10: Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, revamping the franchise a bit, and Alien Force, at least the first two seasons are awesome and I feel people overreacted on the changes. Ultimate Alien is okay, but has itâs problems but the finale was awesome and left the manâs legacy on a high note.. as he sadly passed in 2011 due to heart complications. He is truly missed and produced some utterly amazing stuff whlie he was alive. So on that melacholy note letâs see what happens when his creation hits the tv screen shall we?
Shock to the System:
This episode is written by Christopher Simmons, who is apparently a huge art designer guy.. but iâm not sure thatâs the same chirsptoher simmons. Much more notable is the writer of the episode after this Stan Berkowitz, who was showrunner for season 1 and has done a LOT of DCAU work and is suprising talent, having written a lot of awesome Justice League episodes including Secret Society and The Royal Flush One. Point is weâre in first class hands. Before the episode itself I want to talk about the intro and how itâs unique among DCAU shows. Like most Western Animation the intros for DCAU shows didnât change much over the seasons with the most I can see is JLU changing up the footage to preview the current episode and later adding Hawkgirl to the intro after her return to the team. I THINK superman the animated series changed some of itâs footage too, but I canât confrim it and may of just been imagining it. As iâve talked about on my blog itâs normally a pet peeve of mine, mostly because shows you know, change after season 1, characters get added some one shot characters used for the intro never return, and after a while it can feel dated especially in more recent shows where the status quo is not at all set in stone and things change quite a bit. But sometimes it can be good enough that either the dated elements donât matter or general enough that you donât need to change it and iâts just that good.. and given Batman the Animated Series has both in spades, you can see why iâts probably my golden standard for intros and after superman the animated series DC mostly followed suit. But being part of the teen superhero boom of the 2000â˛s Static is unique in that it splits the diffrence: Itâs intro gets the character across perfectly like a good intro should starting with Virgil getting out of bed and running a comb across his head before showing off to his sister to bug her and literally running into his dad who hand shim his bag and smiles, silently showing off his family. He then runs to school and runs into some trouble.. and said trouble changes for each intro, with Rubberband Man for season 1, Kanga (Whose name I only know because I happened to run across it) for season 2 and your guess is as good as mine for seasons 3 and 4, though Hotstreak is a constant. They still save some money for seasons 1 and 2 by recycling some animation.. but thatâs alright with mea s it was good animation, and the improtant thing is cycling out old villians for new ones, while Season 3 is the only out and out redo to show off Richie taking on the Gear identity, adding about 10 seconds of intro to let him show off. Seriously itâs an utterly great intro and like the other DCAU intros outside of superman, stuck in my brain.Â
The other change thatâs ENTIRELY diffrent from the rest of htem is that the music changes each time. The first two have the same formula just with a difrent vocalist and backing track: a superhero theme but with some hip hop beat boxing over it. The first intro is fine enough, not specattcular but stilll god. The second song.. is eh. Not really great and feels like a marked downgrade from season 1 and just dosenât blend an ocrehstiral superhero theme with the beatbox elements NEARLY as well. The third song though is my faviorite.. even if I HATED Little Romeo as a kid because I really did not like his nick show, itâs more a straight up rap song, but it has a faster beat that fits the intro better, and Romeoâs bragging fits Virgilâs character and penchant for Spidey quips perfectly. I also find it ironic that the theme that blends in with the dcau the most, the first seasonâs, is the one from BEFORE they decided to put it in the same universe. Still this seasonâs intro slaps, I just like the LIttle Romeo one a bit more. The opening scene is picture perfect. Some masked crooks looting a warehouse are loading some stolen TVâs into a van when suddenly the lights come on one by one above one of the crooks before his tv switches to various channels before going haywire. Cue our heroes entrance. Letâs tak ea good look at him
Staticâs Costume is awesome. While I prefer the season 3 redesign, and clearly DC agrees as the redeisgn was used for both pre and post new-52 when they used him, and while heâs getting a fresh design for the reboot, said design takes a lot of cures from said outfit. As for how the outfit differs from the comics itself this is the design he had in the comics
It didnât change much from the first issue, with the exception of his now iconic big puffy jacket which was added pretty early into the characterâs history but I was unaware of that and just assumed he had the bodysuit the whole time. The more you know. But as you can see outside of the cool puffy jacket over a costume the two couldnât be more diffrent. While the Dakotaverse outfit is more a standard superhero outfit, with some regular clothes touches on top the first cartoon outfit comes off more realistic, looking fantastic, but still coming off as something two teenagers could realistically have thrown together with what clothes they could buy, while still looking awesomely superheroy. IN short itâs perfect and only topped by the season 3 onward look...
But the slicker look, with an even cooler jakcet and the new colors all fitting the lighting ascetic better, but fits: not only has Virgil come along farther since he started, but with Richie now having a genius brain as Gear, he can provide a far slicker, far more professional superhero outfit on the budget the two have. This show is just great at costume design.Â
So getting back to the episode at hand, Static puts up a huge sign in elecrticy saying âBad guys hereâ, PFFFT, and then hides away and narrates that a few days ago heâd be the last person anyone wouldâve expected to be a hero. Cue Flashback.Â
We meet Virgil Hawkins on an average day: rapping into his razor, getting into a petty argument with his older sister Sharon, as a younger brother myself I relate to this, and talking to his dad who tries to get them to cut that out. We find out his mom has passed via his sister making really terrible eggs and saying thatâs how mom made them. Exposition! Though we do get a great bit through this as when his sister gets distracted by her boyfriend calling, he uses the opportunity of her leaving the room to dump the eggs.. after having earlier jokingly prayed to his mom for a way out of breakfast. âThanks for looking out for me momâ Thatâs both very sweet and very hilarious.Â
This is a change from the comics it turns out as I was utterly flored to find Virgilâs mom alive and well when reading the first issue of Static. Turns out this was a change made during development and one Dwane McDuffie admitted in the interview I got the tribute quote from to not liking as he had a good reason for having Virgil have a nuclear family, as most black families in media at the time were just one single parent and a kid or two with the other having either left or died. He wasnât too bothered by it as while he preferred what he came up with in the first place, the show DID get some really good stories out of her being gone and didnât just have her be absent because shut up. Virgil is still working over her death and the way HOW she died ends up playing an important role in this episode and gives Virgil a dislike of guns, as she died to gang violence. So the change wasnât for stupid or racist reasons, but likely both to keep the character count down while giving them something to work with for storylines. Or it couldâve been for stupid reasons and the writers simpily made lemonade out of that very dumb lemon, either way it ended up working. Virgil also plans to ask his friend Frieda out. Frieda was a bigger deal in the comics, being Virgilâs friend and confidante as well as his ocasional love intrest, but here while she was inteded to at least be his love intrest here, that sorta fizzled out. As for the best friend role we meet her replacement in Richie, which McDuffie conceded was the kind of change a studio would make swapping out a female character for a male one. That being said the crew made the best of it and Richie is awesome, a bit of an overcompensating dipstick at times, but a good sounding board and pal for virgil and funny as hell too. He was also gay, something only revealed post series by McDuffie.. but unlike say Dumbledore, itâs a bit easier to swallow here: The early 2000â˛s were an even worse time for gay characters in tv let alone cartoons, and if they couldnât kiss or have sex scenes on regular tv, there was no way we were getting any representation in a childrenâs show. So it was largely just hinted at by Richie overcompensating in how âinto girlsâ he was and iâm once again fine with this being word of god as it was literally the best they could do and his counterpart in the comics was also gay, if not as relevant. Ritch encourages Virgil to work on his opening to ask her out as itâs awkward as heck, hits a bit close to home.. but I do appricate the show just .. having him try and ask her out from the first episode. They likely wouldâve drug thigns out a bit granted had they used Frieda more, iâm not blind to the convetions of the time. .but as someone who got the very wrong idea from tv that just waiting around meant a girl would like you eventually, when no you need to actually try even if rejection happens, I honestly wish we had more of this in media than the other garbage morals at the time.Â
So he prepares to , not helped by her mentioning guy after guy is asking her out.... but before he can F-Stop, the future hotstreak, shows up.  F-STOP
That being said...... itâs not as bad as the original gangster name for the comicâs version, Biz Money B. Yes BIZ MONEY B
So yeah while F-Stop is no more intimidating, it at least means I can stop laughing. Francis, because I canât type F-Stop without laughing and this review is already behind, shoves Virgil out of the way and agressively hits on Frieda, even saying âyou smell goodâ, the international sign your a douchebag and also to call the police. Virgil steps up to the guy and gets PAINFULLY slammed into the lockers, something I give the animation team a lot of credit for, as you can FEEL how fucking painful that was. Virgil is saved by Wade, another local gangbanger who in the comics was a close friend of Virgils but here saves him seemingly just because.. seemingly.Â
On the way home though Virgâs problems donât end as naturally, the giant sized asshole with nothing better to do has his goons corner virgil before VIOLENTLY beating him.. off screen but the noises, and the clear brusies including a black eye, on virgil afterwords.. just holy damn iâm suprsied they got away with this but it shows just how horrifing it was and that this is a step above regular bullying, which make no mistake is absoluttley terrible and the series would later do an episode on it and school shootings, into straight up gang violence. Wade shows up again and gets the bastards to flee.. but also makes it clear he canât keep doing this.. and forces Virgil to meet him at his base under the bridge. And itâs a tense sequence, with Virgil KNOWING this is a bad idea but having no real choice and Wade making it abundantly clear that he wants Virgil to join his crew, and makes a chilling point: while Virgils dad RIGHTFULLY dosenât want his son to join a gang as Virgil points out.. he canât be there for him all the time and eventually one of those times, Francis will be around. And he may not surivive that. Virgil nods noncomittaly. At home it gets even more grim as he dosenât open up to his family, understandably as his dad would jsut say to call the police and well.. weâve seen how the police treat black people. At best theyâd just try and use Virgil as an informant and that likely wouldnât end fucking well for Virgil. Ritchie points out he canât join a gang, virgilâs mom died that way.. see told you itâd be important to the plot.. but I like how the story dosenât offer an easy answer.. well okay he gets electric powers soon enough but without the fantastic element this is just an innocent kid caught between either joining the very thing his mom hated or hoping a system not built to protect him will keep him alive. Itâs utterly saddening and chilling and holy shit is it amazing a cartoon in the early 2000â˛s was able to get away with.. ANY OF THIS, and they handle it great, paired down a bit from the comics but even then itâs still incredibly balsy they got THIS much in.Â
Naturally Wade calls in his favor and our hero is forced to come running.. and soon finds out Wadeâs brought him in for a massive gang war. Welcome to the big bang, baby. He hands Virgil a gun as things get started and Virgil.. drops the thing and tries to escape, in a harrowing sequence.. and runs into Francis because god apparently REALLY hates this kid today. As if to prove that the police show up and while that prevents a beating, they demand they disassemble. then release untested gas on them because of course they do.Â
As a result the big bang truly begins, with the various gang members getting mutated.. and naturally so does virgil. Though he wakes up the next day seemingly fine. Howâd he get home? Does his dad know where he was?
I donât know and weâre not getting any answers, but Virgil soon finds weird stuff happening like his clock shorting out, change being attracted to him and his razor going wild. Itâs only once he get sback to his room he gets an inkling of whatâs going on and calls Ritchie to meet him at the Junk yard.. though it is a bit of a dick move as he dosenât you know, tell him anything about Wade or Francis right away. He does at the yard though.. and that he has powers, having finally figured out how to use them to a point. And the series does provide a decent justification later as to why heâd get this so quickly: Virgil is a smart kid, gets great grades at school and apparnetly thereâs even an episode later where he gets a scholarship to a fancy genius school. So him getting how elctromagntisim works or being a quick study on it makes perfect sense.Â
Richie suggest the obvious.. to become a superhero. And the thought.. hadnât occured to Virgil. Itâs honestly a nice twist on the old trope. That he hadnât thought of it, not because heâs selfish or any of that or needs to learn a hard lesson, those have been done.. simply because the rush of getting his powers, and implicitly of having a way out of his current predciament, a way to keep Francis off his back and keep Wade from pulling him in further. His own path. But once iâts brought up.. he jumps on it. Part of it is being a nerd like you or I, of course he wants to.. and being a good intetioned one, he knows this is the right thing to do. Itâs waht makes a superhero a hero: Anyone can get powers in a universe like this, esepcailly the dcau, but it takes true courage and heart to use them selflessly and knowing youâll be in danger. Itâs why I love surperheroes: they often didnât ask for this but they do it anyway because somebodyâs gotta. We also get an intresting wrinkle is superman is, at least I think in this episode I couldâve missed it or misremembered things, mentioned as a fictional character. Thatâs because originally like the comics this wasnât part of the DCAU.. but eventually the crew decided it shared staff from it, shared a network, both first run and on reruns, why not just make it part of the DCAU proper. I fully support this decisionf: While iâm midly annoyed unlimited never really used anything from static shock outside of Static himself in the time travel episode, despite you know Static and Gear having BEEN to the tower and not being much younger than Kara and defintely older than Courtney, I chalk it up to weird rights issues or something like that. But having Batman, Batman Beyond, Superman, Green Lantern and the Justice League itself all guest star was a good idea, and expanded both staticâs universe and gave the DCAU something differnt as most heroes in it were older and more experinced in contrast to the up and coming virgil. Again really wouldâve been nice if he and gear couldâve been a part of the expanded league but production might of just been too far ahead or, given he had his own series, they might just have wanted to stick to toher characters. Also begs the question why Icon or Hardware wasnât adapted for the expanded League but hey, questions for later and the tricky logisitics of the milestone rights mightâve been the issue. I donât know I wasnât in the room.Â
So we get a costume montage, including Black Vulcan from Superfriends, who again ironically would be voiced by Lamarr not too long after this, though weirdly they DONâT use his outfit from the comics for this montage. I mean why not? It fits the gag and wouldâve been a good second to last choice. But what couldâve been aside we get our winner and cut back to present day...
Thanks boys. Static finds out one of the things in the warehouse is a shipment of computers for the school and canât help but show off, showing up to the school, where Frieda and Richie are setting up for the dance, and dropping off the computers, and even saying his catchphrase for the first time âIâll put a shock to your systemâ (Which Richie chimes in with awesome line and I agree, great catcphrase), before helping set up and flirting with frieda.Â
Though as Richtie says heâs a natural. Heâs not wrong as he can work a crowd. .but back it up too as his first run out had him easily taking out the crooks, and as many teen superheros and fans of heroes of hte type, myself included will tell you, getting it right in one is not easy. Not even Miles MOrales was immune. All Static needs now is a villian.Â
And the end of the episode provides one as we see, in horrifc and once again damn suprising detail most of hte new metas arenât doing so good and are melting and other stuff and we catch up with Francis whose burning up.. and naturally given that hair, though given he named himself F-Stop itâs the least of his problems, heâs got fire powers and escapes to âHave me some funâ
So with that we end episode 1. And itâs excellent, a great way to introduce the hero and while the warehouse opening is a bit superflous, it is a decent addition, showing our heroes first outing in costume and giving us a bit of an action scene to get us through the very heavy rest of the episode. But the rest of the episode is no less grippping, telling the tale of a teen caught in an unwinnable scenario who suddenly finds a way out. And speaking of which waht of Wade? Will we see him again? Is he perhaps Ebon, the series big bad as I thought when I was a kid? What comes of the man who directly caused staticâs origin?
Yeahhh thatâs the one mistep I think the pilot makes. Frieda is understandable as that was likely a simple change in creative direction. This though? Why build this guy up if your not going to bring him back. I mean where he went was probably the grave, as he probably did due to his mutation, but itâs still VERY weird to spend a whole episode focusing on this guy, building him up as a big personal threat to our hero.. and NOT have him become the series big bad. And maybe he WAS supposed to be ebon and they just changed their mind. I donât know but it bothers me it bothers me a lot. Otherwise though flawless. ONe more to go.Â
Aftershock: We open outside an electronics store, as our heroes watch the news reacap what happened in the first episode, with the media dubbing it the Big Bang and revealing their could be hundreds of âMetahumansâ, as Virgil dubs after deciding the mediaâs term âMutantâ dosenât fit, a nice wink to the fact that thatâs the term used in dc comics and I believe milestone but could be wrong there. Me I like the term, has a nice ring to it.Â
At the store while Richie mulls over waht this means Static finds out heâs a human CD player.... this was before mp3 players and streaming on your phone made them horribly obsolete mind you and if you donât know what one is congradualtions you live in some sort of bubble and you made me feel really old junior.Â
Frieda happens to be there and Virgil quips âWhatâs the matter they run out of britney cdsâ. Dude sheâs not bad. Also be careful what you wish for man. Nickeback returned the year after this. You have not truly suffered through bad music yet my young friend. They spot a kid looking feverish, and he soon turns into a purple werewolf, as you do. Itâs a bang baby.. those are richieâs exact word and you may not want to start a panic there bud. Just saying your best friend is one. THeir not all like this. Our heroes book it only to run into Francis who naturally refuses to let them leave and only doesnât try to beat up Virgil because Virgil points otu the werewolf and nonplussed, he goes to fight it, scarring it off by revealing his own powers. Heâs now dubbed himself Hotstreak which points for getting an actually good name kid. No points for what happens next as unsuprisingly getting powers did NOT mak ehim a better person and he attacks Virgil who blocks with a garbage can lid and thankfully is blasted into an ally. Richie tries to guard frieda for damn obvious reasons but gets hsi shirt burnt up because shut up Thankfully Static shows up, and we get our firsdt full on superhuman fight as both fight each other with aplomb, and itâs a damn good fight.. and one that goes pear shaped for Virg as heâs caught off guard when he finds out Hotstreak can use his powers to fly, and tackles him and his previous trauma causes him to freeze up. Thankfully , as Frieda put in a call earlier, the fire department arrive and HOt streak has to retreat, though Virgil is bummed that he âChokedâ. And I love this as it not only shows Virgilâs inepxerince, as this is his first time fighting a bad guy but that just because he HAS power now dosenât mean trauma and his previous fear of Hotstreak goes away or you wonât freeze up from time to time. It dosenât make him weak or anything like some assholes would call it .. it makes him human. Humans make mistakes, and it makes him all the more relatable that heâs not pefect and that he did freeze up as I know I certainly would at last once in the circumstances.Â
Things donât get better at dinner as Sharon and Pops argue over the bang babies with Pops calling them a meance and Sharon pointing out Static exists so they canât all be bad. See assuming a group of superhumans are bad because a handful of them ar edick sis why the x-men had to get their own island nation. You can only save an ungreatful populous so many times before you say âfuck it iâm getting my own island, pay me for life saving drugs, save your damn selves and stop doing genocides on us. Kay thanksâ. But he does bring up a valid point that rattles his son: We donât know anything about the Bang Babies or their biological structures and itâs likely they might further mutate into monsters, Static included.Â
Virgil, understandably, wants to check this and thus he and richie compare blood samples in science, to no real conclusion. She he checks out with his doctor who assumes heâs sexually active in a great getting crap past the radar bit and a bit of realisim, but he agrees to the test though if something came up he would have to tell Virgilâs dsad and is up front about this. Nice dose of realisim.
That night City Council has a meeting and the Mayor TRIES to deflect Papa Hawkins questions about the bang babies which again, while being a judgmental ass as not every person hit was a gang member (Virgil, and as we discover later some others), and not every gang member is there by choice, some by circumstnace some, like virgil almost was, because they HAD no other option. Again years of reading x-men may of just made me a bit touchy on assholes admitely assuming superpower people bad. But itâs clear the public is upset and while she says an investigation is underway... Virgil and Richie are not only not convinced, but figure sheâs actively covering it up. And unlike everyone else there who probably suspects the same, they can do something about it and tail her. Itâs during this, and cleverly as I didnât realie till writing this using similar skills to his human cd player act, Virgil listens in and discovers whose behind it: Edwin Alva, whose apparently richer than bill gates and a beloved phinarophist Alva, as it turns out, was actually the arch enemy of Hardware in the comics, taking advantage of the guy in his civiliian idtentiy and thus casuing him to launch a war on the asshole. He does transition into this series well though, being the one behind the gas that caused it and with the mayor agreeing to back off, planning to simply dump the info about the big bang on a disc then destroy everything for now till the heat dies down. Yup sounds like a corprate douchebag.Â
Static tails him, finds the lab and infiltrates it, stealing the disc.. but getting caught by Alvaâs goon, and trapped in a glass prison, forced to use ALL his power to escape and barely getting out alive, but not before bouncing off alvaâs car. Still he now has the proof.. and meanwhile Hotstreak, who I was wrong did get captured, is forced to take pill sbut spits them out once the orderly is gone. Dude.. WHY DIDNâT YOU WATCH HIM. Make sure he swallows that shit especially since, as he has no powers right now and canât harm you.Â
Hotstreak escapes off screen and our heroes discuss the disc before he shows up, and we get a REALLY fucking amazing scene: Virgil ducks into an Alleway and ritchie is worried.. and Virgil disarms him with just one word responses Ritchie: Virg you canât take him. Virgil: Gotta. Ritchie: Well at least wait for the fire department Virgil: Canât. Itâs simpile but it gets the point across: This is his fight, he canât wait for help, and people need him. And this is what makes a true hero: Itâs easy to be a hero when everythings going well.. but itâs the true ones who stick it out against the odds and fight anyway. And heâs going to. So we get one hell of a fight, though naturally Hotstreak burns up the disc. And I do like this as it dosenât feel contrived.. yes Static couldâve left it with ritchie.. but he wasnât thinking in the moment and dindât really have time to think abotu the disc, only that people were being hurt and he was all they had between them and Hotstreak. It was no choice at all. Still that pisses Virgil off that the last nightâs work is now worthless, and he fully charges up and curbstomps francis who retreats into a clearing. Hostreak brags when static follows, as even heâs figured out Static needs to be around metal, as heâs usually on his disc or the street, and in the park there suppodsidly isnât any. But heâs not THAT smart as Virgil points out two things: one, he hoped to do this on PURPOSE so they wouldnât be around people and no on e would get hurt and 2).. this is a city, thereâs metal everywhere.. and he awesomely and cleverly proves it by unlodging a sewage pipe with his powers and dousing his foe, winning and proving his stuff. I love this solution, itâs a clever spider-man type way to disarm him, using smarts and the einvroment instead of just brute forcing it. Though the sewage part wasnât intetional our hero still won and gets praise from the people dumb enough to follow the fight.Â
However at home Virgil points out it was Pyrrhic Victory and shows off his smarts by telling the tale behind it, which I didnât know, because tv tropes didnât exist yet: king pyrhus fought the romans and WON.. but had so little armies left that he still lost overall. Thatâs what this feels like to Virgil: he beat hotstreak but any chance at a cure for Bang Babies and Alva going to jail for causing them is gone. His mood does get a boost though as the doctor calls and reveals heâs fine, he just has a bit too much elctrolytes and just needs to lay off teh salt. He celebrates, we get a quick gag and the episode ends
Aftershock is another stellar episoe, giving us Virgilâs first super foe and a personal one at that, while showing some growth. As richie tells him heâs not virgil anymore heâs static and he canât let his past get to him.. and he doesânt going from cowering in fear to easily beating his foe with simple logic. Itâs a good followup that answers questions you may have from the first ep, like what does this do to virgilâs body, who supplied the gas, and why has no one done anything about this, and sets up another villian for Static in Alva. Great stuff. I highly recommend these episodes and the show as a whole: itâs fast paced, grounded and enjoyable, having just enough levity to not be too dour but just enough tension and stakes to be intresting. A throughly fantastic superhero show and one that iâd certainly love to revisit on this blog If you have an episode of static or the dcau in general youâd want me to cover, my comissions are open and details are on a tab on my blog or can be gotten simply by asking me via ask or dm. Tommorow weâre going deeper underground, thereâs too much damage in this town as the Lena Retrospective continues. So expect gay ducks, straight ducks and some terrfirmains. See you next rainbow.Â

my opinions on mistfall!
under a cut bc spoilers and/or not everyone wants to read :DÂ
overall experience:Â
its fun that there IS a sso cartoon now even if its not exactly amazing quality, and im happy to see if there will be more series or movies after this. it was fun to watch and see sso things in cartoon form too and i wish that we had more already (of sso animation in general). imagine if there had been a ssl cartoon? i also kept thinking throughout this, that it wouldnât be hard for me myself to make an animated series with around the same length episodes and in a similar quality to this (aside from voice acting and music production), which made me feel a little inspired.
favourite scene:
skye taking photos of blaze and hanging out
positive points:Â
i like the background art a lot, i think the style of it, and the colour schemes, helps give the series a specific vibe that fits for an sso series in my opinion.Â
i like the concept art (i assume) illustrations which we saw in the recipes and other posts on sso ig, i think it looks a lot better than the characters in the series, but thats normal for concept art!!
the music is really good quality (whether or not its your taste, the quality is good) which is ofc bc its sso - theres already good music and not something they only did for the cartoon but something they care about in all of the starstable media.Â
i think skye is a nice character (despite the seriesâ overall low quality writing) and i like her design. i also think raniaâs cartoon design (visually) is cute.
skye and rania being a teensy bit gay (minus points for sso if they dont end up really gay in later canon)
i like that blaze wasnt actually like... mean or anything to skye, and i like that shes a mare since typical stories like this usually have stallions. but i just like that there wasnt really any âooh difficult horseâ things between skye and blaze in the current time of the story, blaze actually was sweet to her most the time. blaze seemed pretty charming whenever there wasnt âomg fireâ drama.Â
the animation itself (not meaning the details of the drawings or scene timing, just the actual frame by frame / puppet movements) was fine! not amazing, but absolutely fine.
points i have constructive criticism for, which doesnât mean that i expected more from the series, but that weâre all allowed to discuss the quality and our opinions of media regardless of the target audience, budget, etc:
the writing was childish and rushed - this is not to be rude, but a matter that affects a lot of âmedia for girls / kidsâ, and a topic talked a lot about by Lauren Faust (creator of the FiM reboot of MLP) who wanted to show that a show about rainbow ponies âfor little girlsâ didnât have to be badly written, and could be engaging and interesting. if you watch the older MLP cartoons and compare to the first season of FiM (where Faust was still on the team) you can see a huge difference in quality of the storytelling, characterisation, etc. Mistfall, so far, did not subvert any expectation in the quality of what typical âcartoons for girlsâ are like, and is reminiscent of stuff like âThe Ranchâ (french horse cartoon) which imo is so bad that its hard to watch. (and ofc... that goes for a lot of âcartoons for girls / kidsâ, but doesnât have to be like that.) in order to improve on this, the writer has to study more on storytelling and study from better writers.
on the topic of being rushed: no, itâs not an excuse that the episodes are short: - you have to ADAPT your storytelling and writing to the length of the episodes, not do a bad job and blame the episode length. being able to adapt to different types of media is a necessary skill if thatâs what you work with. this comes down to proper planning and structuring the story and writing in a way that works for the length of the episodes. i donât think that was overall done well here (at times it was okay), and bc of that, it feels rushed and has exposition thrown in your face instead of being shown through better storytelling. the classic thing with exposition is âshow, donât tellâ. this is what the writers/directors should study, or pay more attention to.Â
the timing (length of shots, length of scenes, or parts of shots, etc) was rly bad at times and overall unimpressive - this comes down to the skill of directors and editors. to improve this they have to study more on the topic. bad timing and pacing can really ruin a good scene or a good story and make it feel disconnected and hard to immerse in for the audience.
the artstyle of characters and horses is fine at times, but appears very low quality at others (skyeâs childhood scene really bothered me bc her kid-self had really badly drawn eyes in my opinion). this, like everything else on this list, is ofc something that appears in almost every single âcartoon for girlsâ that ever existed. to improve on this, most likely itâs not a problem with the artists but with the budget and the production timeline (allowing the artists more time to produce better quality art and animation), and it can also be a problem with the art direction, if the art directors arenât very skilled or experienced (i donât say that they arenât, im just giving examples of what could cause these problems.)
the character design for all characters that arenât skye, rania, or blaze was very lacking. none of the not-main-3 characters looked interesting or fun to look at, they looked very dull and like the most boring NPCs you could think of. even though its understandable that the mainest-main characters would have the most interesting designs, that doesnât mean everyone else has to look that boring. this is an issue with art direction or character design. i think most likely there was just very little time (equals money) put into designing the other characters.
the horse design could be improved for a cartoon that focuses on horses this much. like, horses are a big part of the selling point here, so make sure that their designs and art/animation is good. at times even blaze looked awkward and uninteresting, as did the other horses.
âalonsoâ looks nothing like sso alonso and i donât like that they used his character if itâs not going to have anything to do with him. they should have given this character a different name if they wouldnât make him seem like he had anything to do with the sso character aside from being a male ranger. (also in the game heâs like 22 or something, skye is 15...?)
why did they add a âheâs cuteâ dumbass fucking stupid hetero comment for literally no reason other than adding a dumbass fucking stupid hetero comment?
considering that they âcanât confirm whether a sequel is happening or notâ, it seemed very meh to throw in druid cult magic stuff and not really connect to it and now the series ended? you would have expected to find out more about the cloaked people, the runes, the magic that the ranger guy did, and blazeâs magic in general, and skye herself, why her mom is âa witchâ.... thats a lot to throw in while saying that you canât say if thereâs a sequel coming to answer all those questions. (it wouldnât have been a criticism from me if they said âweâre working on season 2âł or âthere will be a comic book that continues the storyâ or anything that told us that these questions, in this particular iteration of a story in jorvik, will actually be answered. - and i assume they ARE working on the continuation of the story, but i dont agree with that theyâre not upfront about it, when they left so many questions unanswered.)
at times raniaâs blindness was handled stupidly and i think they should have gotten more consultation from actual people with visual impairment, but i think its still good to HAVE a blind character in the main cast and that itâs not a big dramatic story thing but just an everyday thing. at some points it was fine though; and i personally donât think the scene with rania being able to see blaze was necessarily a problem - because - a lot of blind ppl can see sharp contrasts in light and dark, and this seemed relatively realistic to me when blaze is on fire. (however, the way it was drawn as if she could see the whole shape of blaze and skye could be criticised for sure, and makes it feel more like âi can see because of magicâ and not âi can see bc THIS MARE IS ON FIREâ).Â
personal opinion which i said before, but i donât think raniaâs voice fits her at all, and itâs not the voice actorâs fault (iâm sure theyâre lovely) but the casting and the directors. from the sso character, rania would seem a lot more lively, quick and adventurous, and not as calm and gentle as she appeared here. she seemed a lot too sort of motherly or just adult, instead of an adventurous teen who runs off on her own to do whatever she feels like. compare in-game rania going âMC, thats a jorvik wild!!!â and alonso going âstop talking nonsenseâ (paraphrased), to Mistfall rania going âjorvik wilds are really rare...â (calm, sort of disinterested, doesnt seem like she cares that much about adventures)
the voice acting overall was meh. i see this as a direction problem, not an individual voice actor problem (and the writing didnt help - itâs hard to provide good quality acting with a poor script unless you can just toss the script aside and improv, if you have good actors). it felt childish and uninteresting at most points and generic low quality for âcartoons for girlsâ. from a voice acting perspective i think skye had the best result. anyway, the way to improve this is for the director in charge of voice acting to not direct the actors to perform in this childish manner. (again, refer to cartoons with better writing and better voice acting, that have a very similar target audience.)
ok, i think that was everything that i wanted to write about for now, might think of more later lol

If you're comfortable sharing your thoughts on Shadow's current portrayal according to Sega Mandates(tm), I'd be interested to hear it. If I were to try and rationalize it on my own, the best I can come up with is that Shadow's not in a good place right now mentally and is lashing out because of some inner turmoil he's refusing to share.
I am very comfortable sharing! >:D I hope yâall are good with reading âcause this is gonna be LONG.
I... donât like it. Mostly based on personal preference and nostalgia glasses. I will say I have my own theories about whatâs going on with him.
1. Heâs going through things, like you said.
I can see where this is coming from and from a retelling stand point- I think we all know about Shadowâs past. We all know what heâs done. But we donât know what this worldâs Shadow has done yet. While Shadow may be unwilling to share, the beauty about a visual medium is that we should be able to see whatâs going on despite his wants on the matter. Nothing has been forthcoming thus far, and while I understand this is Sonicâs comic, I think we all wanna know what the heck is going on with Shadow.
2. All rivals must be Vegeta.
Speaks for itself. Vegeta is a great favorite amongst fans (including myself) and went through a HUGE boost in popularity after the events of Dragon Ball Super. My problem with this theory is I feel that Vegeta got more popular... because he was allowed to be softer and got to lose some of his high and mightiness without going full OOC. Shadow hasnât been allowed ANY of the same freedom, so this is less of a viable theory in my mind. What brings it to mind in the first place is that Knuckles was once Sonicâs rival as well. Now that heâs more his buddy and a signature part of Team Sonic, Sonic needs a more prominent/serious rival. Someone who isnât going to just join the main gang and always be his own separate thing. Keeping him as a Vegeta type makes it so itâs much more marketable when he does get to team up with the rest of the team.
Which... hasnât gone well in IDW world considering every time heâs gotten involved heâs just managed to make things a little bit worse.
3. They want to kill off ShadAmy for good.
Or rather less specifically ALL of Shadowâs ships. And everyone elseâs. This is less of a theory and more of a whine. We havenât seen him have ANY positive interactions with ANYONE in this comic series so far. Yes, he gave into Sonic in issue 6 over Mr. Tinker, but I hardly call that positive. Heâs seen TRAVELING with Rouge, but again, nothing specifically positive. I get not wanting to encourage romance, I mean, the fandom can be fairly divisive at the best of times, imagine them trying to ship tease. They HAVE to be seeing whatâs going on with the Avatar Fandom recently, good GOD.
And being a loner character isnât so bad, I mean, look at Knuckles! But when youâve made it so that he doesnât look particularly happy or fulfilled even when alone? Like, whatâs the point? Why have Shadow in the story if all heâs going to do is mess up and be a stick in the mud all the time? Why is he part of the world if he isnât allowed to interact with any of it?
And my most prominent theory (please, dear god, let this be the reason)
4. Theyâre getting to it.
Theyâre rebooting the series again- which means Shadow as we know him is starting over. Iâm HOPING that heâs starting here, and that he will eventually be allowed to grow from his failures- like theyâre trying to Zuko him (or maybe more appropriately âSokkaâ him. Sokka was really hard to love in the first few episodes). Right now Shadowâs just a REALLY uninteresting, charmless version of early âplanet destroyingâ Vegeta. Heâs just rude and selfish without thought. Like, thereâs glimmers of him thinking about other people and the greater good of the world. But it honestly feels like itâs coming from a place of BEING right rather than DOING right. Which- heâs fifteen. People are usually little shits at 15 years old- itâs just a fact of life.
BUT- itâs also been over 30 issues now. We should be seeing SOMETHING new with Shadow. Heâs given VERY few concessions to other people and theyâve all been to Sonic. He has zero other connections to people and at this point Sega needs to start coming up with reasons why beyond marketing and âlol edgyâ.
Heâs a kid, and heâs troubled. Iâll give him that level of understanding. That doesnât mean I have to like this little shit my baby boy has become. And frankly, until we start getting answers or at least some PROGRESS on his character growth, I will continue to be unhappy about him. Iâll still support IDW as a whole, but Iâm gonna be pouty about it.

Hi, Ben! I hope you are feeling a bit better, or that things have at least calmed a bit! (I mean I still hope youâre feeling better, but itâs okay if youâre not yet, too. You know what I mean.)
Wow, Walker soundsâŚinterestingâŚÂ I remember watching the original series with my mom, because she liked several of the actors in it. I canât recall much in the way of specific detail, but Iâm pretty sure there was definitely a lot of probably-questionable-even-at-the-time cultural appropriation-type stuff going on for both Native American and Asian cultures. And I gotta say, when I think âwho can I see replacing Chuck Norris in a role?â JarPad is never the first to come to mindâŚÂ Iâm not even sure why they felt they needed to reboot that series, anyway, given the potential to be highly problematic.
And Iâve never seen any Winx Club, but that show also sounds veryâŚinterestingâŚÂ I donât understand the general obsession with gritty reboots lately (which is also where I feel DC went wrong). Like, let shit be bright and colorful! The real world is dark enough right now. Also not really here for a plus-size character being the butt of jokes and pranks. Weâre well past that sort of thing being okay (and was one of the things I loved most about the Ghostbusters reboot. Realistically built women, and not a single fat joke to be found.)
Omg, that snippet is so cute!!! I wish I could draw, too, or at least photoshop with anything approaching skill, because that visual is hysterical. XD I can just see poor Noah fighting the urge to pick up a Sharpie and write âMigraine #1â and 'Migraine #2â on Peter and Stilesâ t-shirts. XD (Although between theoretically attempting to look at confidential police files and Melâs probable reaction to his presence, I suspect Peter is not in for the best afternoon. [As though his outfit werenât torment enough. XD ])
Also, I love that idea of Stiles making Peter fight a duel for the right to date his dad. Like, just imagine Noah getting home just as theyâre about to start, and then hearing an explanation, and just being like ââŚyou know what, what the hell? Letâs see what youâve got, Hale.â, but like totally giving Peter like his tie or his badge or something to wear as a favor. (Heâs totally gonna date Peter either way, but Peter doesnât need to know that yet.)
And I donât know if it will help any, but if you feel the need for some fluff, I got the next chapter of IYWTD up finally, complete with only one bed, cuddling for warmth, a bit of hurt/comfort, and massive amounts of pining. ;D (And wow, yeah, that ship dynamic comic fits them so well. Although right now Peter is still stuck on the seesaw between âWhat is all this FEELINGS bullshit?!â and âI didnât say STOP!" XD )
Anyway, Iâm starting to ramble again. I hope that your day has been good, or at least decent overall, and that tomorrow is even better! Sending lots of good energy for whatever you need it for! Take care! *Hugs!*
Hey my friend, hope youâre doing okay lately and that work isnât too crazy. <3
My mood today has been, *sigh* well, it hasnât been great. I think itâs because I did my T-shot at 1 am last night and my hormones are everywhere at the moment while my levels readjust. Which would also explain my moodswings and anger management problems in the last week. Iâm gonna resolve that by hopefully getting my boxing bag in tomorrow, though with the Dutch Postal service PostNL you never freaking know. Because of the extended lockdown delivery times have been insane lately. But yeah, thereâs that.
I did manage to take the garbage out today, folded some more laundry, and put my groceries away. So thereâs that too.
With Walker, idk if it helps or hurts that Iâve never seen the original and have nothing to compare it to. But it just felt really awkward to me because of the acting. (I mean the teenage daughter is a good actress, I liked her, but Jpad is very- off in this show) Thereâs only one episode out so far and I kinda want to give it another shot but it also just- meh. It didnât feel that special to me.
As for Winx, or Fate: a Winx Saga, itâs- *groan + sigh* Itâs not good. Itâs not good writing (the dialogue is horrendous, like a 40 year old man trying to write teenagers), itâs not the best acting, although itâs not awful either. I think the writing and the whitewashing of several characters are the biggest problems. Also the plus sized character and the gay character are bullied and made fun of and urgh.
I personally also never had a problem with the whole girls are fairies and boys are specialists thing in the original show. Because to me, that automatically extends to gender and would include trans people of that gender. But I can see why they would update that. So that, I donât have a problem with.
Itâs just the writing that is horrendous and itâs almost like the people who made it have no idea who their target audience actually is and why people watched the original in the first place.Â
But yeah, I might âhate watchâ another episode just to see if I can poke some fun at it, but weâll see.
Omg, that snippet is so cute!!! Â I wish I could draw, too, or at least photoshop with anything approaching skill, because that visual is hysterical. Â XD Â I can just see poor Noah fighting the urge to pick up a Sharpie and write âMigraine #1â and 'Migraine #2â on Peter and Stilesâ t-shirts. Â XD Â (Although between theoretically attempting to look at confidential police files and Melâs probable reaction to his presence, I suspect Peter is not in for the best afternoon. Â [As though his outfit werenât torment enough.
Right? I really like that little paragraph. Iâm trying to get this chapter out soon, but Iâm struggling a little with a few things and donât know how to continue it. Iâll figure it out though.
And Noah totally would if he could XD He has an image to uphold but guarantee you that heâs thought about it.Â
Peterâs having a very bad, horrendous, not so good day so far. That I can guarantee you.Â
And yeah, I think that image is just really freaking cute. Kinda want to include that prompt into Welcome to the Family. XD Itâs adorable.
I think Iâm gonna check out the next chapter this weekend. I wanna be in a bit of the right headspace for it when I do read it. And not in my âeverything sucks and I wanna punch a hole in the wall and break every bone in my handâ kinda mood.
But I will def check it out soon. Iâm sure itâs gonna be an awesome read, it always is <3
Hope youâre having a good day B, Mo and me are sending you good vibes and lots of hugs and snuggles <3

Name ten favourite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.) then tag ten people
This was extremely difficult to do. The first two were easy, since they are my ride or die, but choosing 10 different characters? From ten different things? I donât know if I even like 10 different things, but I found some loopholes, lol.

1. Lara Croft - Tomb Raider
Lara Croft has been one of my idols since I was a small child. My mom had bought Tomb Raider: Starring Lara Croft and Tomb Raider: Adventures of Lara Croft for my sister on the PlayStation. I remember watching my sister play it, and then sometimes I was allowed to play it. I continued the Tomb Raider legacy throughout the years.
Lara Croft is just. Amazing. I love every version of her. Classic Lara deflected the life her parents had wanted her to have, and paid the price for it. Did that stop her? No, it did not! She was able to make her own mark in the world. LAU!Lara wanted to find out what happened to her mother, and honestly I love Keeley Hawes as Lara. She was witty and funny, and Legend is one of my favorite TR games. And Reboot!Lara? I love her. I honestly donât care what people say, Reboot!Lara is great! Her first game is also fun to play. Each version of Lara Croft offers something different, and I love it. While many of Laraâs core values are in each incarnation (adventurous, ambitious, brave, etc.), each brings a new perspective which I enjoy!
Fun fact: my irl best friend and Lara share the same zodiac sign!
2. Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) - Marvel
I LOVE WANDA MAXIMOFF WITH ALL MY HEART!!! Sheâs a huge comfort character for me. Sheâs one of the most powerful mutants (yes, I am ignoring the retcon), and sheâs complex. Wanda first appeared in X-Men #4 alongside her brother, Pietro, as members of Magnetoâs Brotherhood. Eventually, the twins become heroes and join the Avengers.
Wandaâs mutation is magic; probability, to put it at best. She can warp reality. While she is strong, she is also human. Many remember her best as having a mental breakdown and creates House of M (influenced by her beloved brother). After this, she goes off the radar for a few years before her reincarnated sons find her.
I love Wanda because she has heart, courage, and cares for others. Sheâs intuitive and sensitive and, in many ways, reminds me of myself. I genuinely love Wanda with all my heart. She remains to be my number one favorite superhero. I wish more people knew her--the real her. The MCU does not do her (or her brother) justice. At all. (At least AOU kind of got their âreluctant villains to heroesâ origin story well enough?)
Also: fuck you Marvel for retconning Magneto as the Maximoffsâ father. Itâs been 5 years but I still elect to ignore that.
3. Phoebe Halliwell - Charmed
Growing up, Charmed was one of my favorite TV shows. To sum it up, itâs about a group of sisters who discover that theyâre witches. Specifically, theyâre the Charmed Ones and they protect the innocent. For awhile, Iâve said that Piper is my favorite sister but after my last rewatch, I say that Phoebe is my favorite.
At the beginning of the series, Phoebe was the youngest and the rebel of the family. Before the pilot, Phoebe was living in New York but we see her move back in. We also see that she has a strained relationship with her eldest sister, Prue, due to her scummy fiancĂŠ. Phoebe is also the reason why their magic was unlocked. (As children, their powers were bounded in order to keep them safe.)
Over time, we see Phoebe mature more. However, there are a few things that never changes with Phoebe. Sheâs kind and caring for others, always wanting to help them no matter what. (She shares this trait with the youngest sister, Paige.) She is deeply connected with her emotions (which causes her to gain the power of empathy in season 6). Phoebe has also had rough luck with love (see: Cole the demon, etc.) but no matter how much she gets hurt, Phoebe still has hope. She still has love in her heart. No matter how much she gets knocked down, she finds a way of getting back up, and I admire her a lot for it.
4. Catelyn Stark - A Song of Ice and Fire
Family. Duty. Honor. This is House Tullyâs family motto, which is deeply embedded into Catelyn. Catelyn was married to Ned Stark during Robertâs Rebellion, after her former betrothed was murdered in Kingâs Landing (who, ironically, was Nedâs older brother). Their wedding night resulted in the birth of their firstborn: Robb Stark, heir to Winterfell and King in the North.
Catelyn Stark is the mother of the wolves, and her love for her family is no doubt a core of her character. However, Catelyn is clever and if you mess with her, you will certainly gain her wrath. Her eldest values her for her wisdom, and will turn to her for help. She will do anything for her family, such as freeing Jaime Lannister to get her girls back, or offering herself to save her eldest during the horrific events of the Red Wedding.
Catelyn is murdered, along with majority of the Stark party, at the Red Wedding. However, she is resurrected and becomes Lady Stoneheart. Stoneheart is out for vengeance, because she believes all of her children are gone; taken by the enemy. Stoneheart murders Frey or Lannister alike--whoever is associated with them. She holds no mercy.
There is so much more to Catelyn that I could go on, but I will stop here. (Besides, I need to reread the books again!) I will say this: fuck you, D&D.
5. Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) - Marvel
MAGNETO TIME? MAGNETO TIME.
Erik Lehnsherr was a young boy when World War II happened and because he was Jewish, he was sent to Auschwitz. His family did not survive, but Erik did. Depending on what you follow on, Erik either A) escaped with Magda (who is the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilverâs mother) and started a life with her or B) he hunted down the men who worked for Sebastian Shaw (movie universe).
Anyway, Erik had been a mutant since around the time he was sent to the camps and after the horror and trauma heâs faced, Erik decided that mutants would never be accepted by âtheir less evolved kinâ. So, he became Magneto, a protector for mutants and enemy for humans.
Magneto is only one side of the coin, however. Charles Xavier is a longtime frenemy of sorts, both having different perspectives in life. Xavier believes in coexistence, but Magneto believes otherwise. He had seen what humanity is capable of, and he never wants that to happen again. If he must be a villain, than so be it.
Magneto is beautifully complex. He has done some questionable things (Iâm thinking of the comics for this one), but he has also done great things for his people. âNever again,â he says. He fights to keep it that way. Magneto is sympathetic at best, and I certainly understand where he comes from. Tell me this: if you were Magneto, what would you have done?
Also: while Michael Fassbender is not Jewish in any way, he did one hell of a job portraying this amazing character.
6. Kira Yukimura - Teen Wolf
I wasnât planning on adding Teen Wolf to the list, but here I am.
Kira was introduced to us in season 3b, written as a ânew love interestâ for Scott McCall. I remember a lot of fans of a certain ship were pissed, but whatever. Iâm not here to talk about romance.
So, in 3b Kira was a new student, with her dad as the new history teacher at Beacon Hills High School. Sheâs of both Korean and Japanese descent, and she ends up playing an important role in the story arc. We find out that sheâs a Kitsune, thanks to her mother who explains how a Kitsune and a werewolf must come together to defeat the Nogitsune, who happens to be possessing the loveable Stiles Stilinski.
After this, Kira becomes a part of the McCall Pack and Scottâs girlfriend. In my opinion, theyâre cute together but many people hate them together. Oh well. Kira also becomes a badass in her own right, as her abilities evolve. However, in season 5, the creators put her on the shelf, as she trains with Skinwalkers and is never seen again. I am so fucking MAD about that.
Like many characters on this list, Kira has heart and courage. Sheâs a bit of an introvert but she is loyal, and cares for her pack. Sheâs cute and a bit goofy. She is skilled and deadly. Kira is one of the coolest characters Teen Wolf had, and the way they treated her was disappointed. (Even though after her death, Allison was always mentioned/connected in some way. I like Allison, donât get me wrong but all I can say is: interesting...)
Fun fact: Arden Cho, the actress, is the VA for Sam Nishimura in Tomb Raider (2013)!
7. Lois Wilkerson - Malcolm in the Middle
The mother of four boys, the matriarch of the Wilkerson household is not one to push around.
Lois has had a rather rough life. Her parents were not the best, and everyone tries to push her down. However, Lois fights back and is not afraid to stand up for what is right. Francis, her oldest, describes her as an absolute menace and while her sons and husband fear her, they also admire her for her strength and courage. Lois is tough as nails, but she can also break, too. However, her family--the family she and Hal created, no one else--is there for her. Lois is incredibly strong willed no matter what, and I love her so much.
8. Theon Greyjoy - A Song of Ice and Fire
No words can describe on how much I love this fashionable war criminal.
Before the start of the series, Theon is a hostage/ward of Lord Stark, as a result of his fatherâs failed rebellion. Theon was a reminder that if Balon Greyjoy pulled something again, his last (male) heir would get the chopping block. Pretty brutal for a young child, right?
Now, at the start of the series, Theon is nineteen and is seemingly best friends with Robb Stark, the heir to Winterfell and the North. He shows loyalty to Robb and the Starks, claiming that Lord Stark was like a father to him. Heâs also skilled with archery and, like I mentioned earlier, fashion.
Then A Clash of Kings occur, and we began to see how Theon Greyjoy is.
Robb Stark has been proclaimed as King of the North, and sends Theon to the Iron Islands in hopes to gain allies with Balon Greyjoy. However, this does not occur. Old Greyjoy says âfuck that and if youâre [Theon] arenât with us, then youâre against us.â We see Theon conflicted, but we also see how strained his relationship with his father is. In the end, Theon joins the Greyjoys, and promptly sacks Winterfell. However, that is not the end. Theon is tricked by Ramsay Bolton and this vile man takes Winterfell. I believe while he took the women and children captive, the men were killed...save for Theon, of course.
Theon is held captive by Ramsay Bolton, and is tortured quite brutally. Theon goes through a lot in this time. His appearance had changed drastically: black hair turned white and brittle, he becomes skin and bones, and loses a few fingers and toes. Theon is no longer Theon. He became Reek. The new Reek.
Then, Jeyne Poole (or Sansa; I hate you D&D) arrives, under the guise that she is Arya Stark and she is to wed Ramsay Bolton. Jeyne begged Theon to help her, but he is in no position of power. He is a completely broken man. Time flies by. Jeyne is in absolute misery but with the help of Mance and some spearwives, Theon is able to escape Winterfell with Jeyne during a winter storm. Currently, in the books, Theon is set to be executed by Stannis Baratheon, who is currently holding him captive.
Theon Greyjoy may be a fuckup, but to me he is such an amazing character. He holds much conflict, from being a hostage/ward to Prince to prisoner. Theon Greyjoy may have done a lot of shit, but he is also a survivor. Everything he has been put through, he somehow lives to see another day. Despite holding negative feelings to Lord Stark and everyone around, claiming he owed no one anything (fair enough), he loved Robb. When Theon had found out he was murdered at the Red Wedding, you know what he thought?
I should have been with him. Where was I? I should have died with him.
Theon is far from perfect, but that is what makes him great. He has come so far, and I hope his journey does not end any time soon.
9. Suki - Avatar: The Last Airbender
Zuko may have the best redemption arc (or does he? See above.), but Suki holds a special place in my heart.
We first meet Suki season one, on Kyoshi Island. She is the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, and effectively puts Sokka in his place. However, when Sokka requests a few lessons, Suki is happy to help...as long as he followed the guidelines.
Suki is a certified badass. Although a non-bender, Suki has incredible skill and event went against Azula. However, Suki and the others surrendered (so that Appa would not be captured), leading to her imprisonment at Boiling Rock. Eventually, Sokka and Zuko free her (with the help of Mai). After this, Suki joined the Gaang in ceasing the 100 Year War.
Suki is strong but like many other characters in this list, she has heart. She is an effective leader and fighter, offering her help whenever she can. Too bad she was never mentioned in The Legend of Korra. Suki is underrated and she deserves more love and respect.
10. Max Mayfield - Stranger Things
We first meet Max in season 2 as the new girl in Hawkins. She seems like your average girl but she quickly gets tied into the party after Lucas begs her to show her what has happened with him and the rest of the party. However, thereâs a lot more to Max.
Max moved to Hawkins with her mother, stepfather, and stepbrother. Itâs easy to see that Max and Billy, her stepbrother, do not get along. Billy is outright mean to her, lashing out at practically every chance he gets. Max fights back, however...especially when he threatens her friends.
In season 3, we finally get to see Max and El bond. (Thank God we didnât have to put up with the âjealousyâ tidbit. I would have--) El believes that Mike is lying and Max is like, âWell yeah. Come on letâs go to the mall!â and the girls have a blast together. I was so happy to see the two bond and have fun. I was so happy that El was spending time with someone other than Mike. I was so happy the girls were having fun by themselves. Honestly, the best part of season 3 was them becoming friends.
I love Max because she is confident and is not afraid to speak her mind. Sheâs funny and in many ways, we are alike. (Especially with our attitudes on boys and relationships.) However, Max is also vulnerable. We see this with her stepbrother, especially in season 3 I think. Their relationship was drastically different in season 3 and while many didnât like it (myself included)...I also thought about Max. Sheâs a young girl and no matter how much bad blood was in between them, it will be traumatizing to see a transformation like this to someone you know quite well. It would be scary.
Anyway, I love Max.
Honorable mentions: Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), Ororo Munroe (Storm), Jean Grey (Phoenix), Anna Marie (Rogue), Sam Nishimura, Malia Tate, all of House Martell, Dustin Henderson...
Thanks for reading! I hope you all enjoyed reading this. Tell me, do I have a certain type of character that Iâm attracted to? Also, Iâm not sure who has all done this, so if you havenât it: who are your top 10 favorite characters? Let me know!

Dark Phoenix Review (SPOILERS)
Like 3 weeks late, but I finally saw it!! (I am HORRIBLE about seeing movies alone. Plus I hate driving, plus I had insomnia the week it came out.)
I donât understand all the hate itâs getting? Like, I didnât think it was that predictable. I wanted one thing, Jean in Scottâs arms at the end and didnât get that iconic scene, but other then that, it wasnât that bad. I thought it was breakneck pacing here and there, especially in the begining. Ten minutes in and theyâre in space? Can we have a little build up? Maybe some more Jean/Scott in there?
However, I thought the rest made sense, even Magneto. (It wouldâve felt weird to not have him and they gave him something to do and his revenge was justified.) But one thing I didnât understand, itâs tiny and stupid, why were they keeping tabs on the kids campfire party? (Canât really call it a rave I guess.) Let them be kids. Even if it was on the property, it just looked weird to me.
Looking back, Iâm relieved they didnât include yet another âQuicksilver is awesomeâ scene. Two was enough, three wouldâve been overkill. He wasnât used enough and really faded off. Wouldâve appreciated him being around in the last act, but as I just realized, he was recovering. Dangit Jean. >_<
Unfortunately, I knew Mystique was going to die going in because THANK YOU INTERNET!! (/sarcasm) Canât blame the actress, but maybe this will pave the way for any future sequels not to overuse her. Also, it differentiates the plot a little from the awful Captain Marvel. Also, itâs sad. Always liked Mystique in the reboots. Good, balanced character.
Nowww (breathes) Kurt freaking Wagner!! :D He was used a little more then in Apoc, and as always, they have kept up the X-Men tradition of knocking him out. XD (Go watch Evo again and youâll see what I mean. Poor boy was getting knocked unconscious like every other episode. Add to that Apoc, and I pronounced it tradition. He mightâve gotten hit in Wolverine and the X-Men, Iâm not sure. Yes, Iâm a giant X-Men nerd.) I thought the exchange after my poor blueberry got teleported to death was funny and LOLâd in the theatere.
Xavier: Are you okay?
Kurt:No...!
Xavier: Kurt, you have to get me in there.
Because usually the hero will say heâs okay, heâs fine. But my poor baby has surely exhausted himself, so he has to teleport AGAIN and oh glob, I just feel for him. Xavier, stop being a jerk. LOL.
And that fight scene. I donât just mean Kurtâs part, I mean the whole thing. And people really hated this movie? Come on! Anyway, yeah, that was the reason you donât enrage my blueberry. And I can see why he has...blades or whatever on his tail now. I donât agree with it, I still like his original comic/show look and thereâs something slightly LESS violent about him choking someone out with his tail VS slitting their throat with it, but, eh, I canât change it and it does add an element of threatening-ness and danger to the character that simply isnât present in all his other incarnations. So movie/show Kurt=Cute, almost harmless fuzzy blue elf. Reboot movie Kurt=Potential to be a ruthless killing machine with a bladed tail when pushed enough.
Edit: Another post at the blog Mister Wagner didnât like that scene, saying Kurtâs always been a pacifist. I have to slightly disagree on that, but I wonât rant too much about it here. The short version is that if Kurt were a true pacifist, heâd have no place on the X-Men and would probably be dead by now. Heâs kind, good, and decent, yes, but he, like other X-men have killed and threatened before in the comics. Kurt may only do it as a last resort, but thatâs part of why we love him so much. He doesnât take the obvious route other super powered people do.
Okay, so I never did get my âKurt loves piratesâ reference either, (remember how I wanted that in the last movie?), but, eh, he was in it a little more and thatâs what matters. And they actually included it in WATXM, so at least they did it somewhere outside of the comics.Â
I wouldâve had Jean half dead in scottâs arms at the end, and I havenât ever read the Phoenix saga, (I know! Crazy!) itâs just....I want a little comic nod. Consistency. Continuity. Show you CARE about the source material, Kinberg!
All in all, a three and a half star movie. Not amazing, and I wouldâve changed some things, but I as a hardcore fan enjoyed it.
Edit: Another example of rushing it I recalled. I was actually expecting some cute scene between Kurt and Ororo at the party. It may have looked like Ororo was going to open her mouth then-cut to another scene. Not my ship, but, again, room to breathe and some character development in some direction wouldâve been nice. Again, I liked this movie. I didnât love it. Also also, I wouldâve had a bang out, crazy bigger fight scene at the end. Less violent. (I write fight scenes a lot for my fics. Just because theyâre fight scenes doesnât mean they have to be bloody or violent.) It wouldnât have saved the movie, but it wouldâve made the last act better. Let the X-men truly go out with a bang.

A to Z favourite TV show challenge! Or # to Z?
# - 30 Rock (Liz Lemmon! This is just all kinds of hilarity).
A - Ally McBeal (there's not enough of this on Tumblr btw. I loved it before I understood it - my brother watched and I followed. And then I watched again and I loved it more) / Arrow (so years ago I started watching this because of Tumblr. You guys were obsessed with Olicity and I was too even though I hadn't watched the show. So I watched it. Thank you for ruining my life btw) / Accidentally in Love (Asian Series, sup, @netflix - thanks for getting me addicted to Asian series - I liked them before but now it's just there and begging to be watched AND I CAN'T HELP MYSELF - YOU'VE ADDICTED MY MOTHER TOO).
B - Brooklyn Nine Nine (best thing to happen to me, thank you Tumblr - the nine nine fandom. Also started it a couple years ago and fell in love hard. This show makes me laugh no matter what and it's pure and I love it so much. It's really a show I needed because when I watch series I get really emotionally involved and certain shows leave me so stressed that I have to take a break and all I can watch is comedies for a few weeks. Or months. Depends on how big my heart break was. B99 always makes me laugh and feel lighter). / Buffy the Vampire Slayer (another one from my childhood, you know when you're too young to really understand but old enough to remember it? So yeah, my brother got me hooked at a young age and the addiction stuck. Because I've never been able to forget Buffy. And I've recently been rewatching it with my mother - she too is a bit addicted).
C - Charmed (Original series, not reboot - I haven't even watched the reboot. But yes, Charmed. I remember being up til 10PM on a Monday while I was in primary (middle) school just to watch it. Halliwell sisters are another drug I never could kick - Leo was one of my first ever crushes - my very first crush was Shahrukh Khan and if we're ever talking Bollywood movies he'll be all over that post).
D - Doctor Who (Okay! I only started watching from season 5, again cos NETFLIX - the Doctor and Amy Pond - man, just lock me up in the TARDIS and take me away already. ALSO one of the series that broke my heart enough that rendered me incapable of watching any other series except comedy).
E - Ek Hazaroon Mein Meri Behna Hai (Hindi series; my sister is one in a thousand - I assume it's the name because that sounds better in Hindi than one in a million or billion. There's something about Hindi series that sucks you in and tortures you until you're on the brick of exploding from suspense - the build up is both infuriating and renders you unable to tear your eyes away).
F - Friends ('Cause it's been there for me and how can I not? Again, childhood. Also. Heroes get remembered but legends never die. And I've watched every episode like a gazillion times and laugh just the same - I think even more 'cause I know what's gonna happen. I'm one of those people). / Fairy Tail (Anime. Magic. Friendship. Friendship. Friendship. It's one of those rare shows that has a lot of characters and manages to make you love each one of them. I found it after high school but I love it to bits).
G - Gilmore Girls (I remember the first time I watched this as a kid, Rory and Lorelei were sitting at Luke's diner and chatting about something and I though they were sisters. I was at my cousin's house and I just couldn't stop watching them. Loved it ever since. And it's strange how a randomly watching TV can just change your life - 'cause you know, I obsess) / Gossip Girl (at first, I'd watched it because Kristen Bell was the voice of Gossip Girl. And I needed anything related to anything Veronica Mars. And then I naturally loved it like everybody else. Also disappointed at who GG really was. So yeah.)
H - How I Met Your Mother (At first I really, really loved it, now though it's not so high on my favourite list but it does still make me laugh - cos Barney. The final episode was so disappointing). / Hannah Montana (because if I was 13 or 16 this would have made the list. And I still love the show. My heart swells everytime my bestie sings True Friend to me. I still love Hannah Montana music okay).
I - iZombie (Rob Thomas. He's the reason I tried it out. Liv is the reason I stayed. Also Ravi. And also Major. Okay, dude, characters and plot is right on point) / Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon (Hindi series; what name do I give to this love? Its unnecessarily complicated but gosh those complications kept me on edge, staring at the screen, waiting for those idiots to realise the truth. Opposites attract. Hate to love to hate to love. They did it so well).
J - Joan of Arcadia (okay so I remember really loving this when I was younger - I haven't rewatched it as an adult but I feel like I'll still love it. I mean, come on, what if God was one of us?)
K - Kim Possible (Call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me? Ultimate cartoon. Hands down. Second best is The Life and Times of Juniper Lee - she's basically the cartoon Buffy - the Chosen One - though it's hereditary instead of random? And also more fun and less heartache 'cause it's a cartoon).
L - Lucifer (Man, Lucifer. You got the guy telling everyone he's the devil and they think he's talking in metaphors? It's just hilarious to me. Detective. Romance. Snark. Supernatural. Also, Hello, Adult Tom Welling - can I even describe how excited I was to see him? Smallville, man).
M - Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (One of the few new cartoons that I watch and love. This is just so cute and the love square is just so cute and everything is just so cute. And like we need cute stuff in our lives. Frustrating cos how oblivious can one be but also why you so cute Marinette Dupain Chang and Adrian Agreste aka Ladybug and Cat Noir)/ Malcolm in the Middle (Childhood. Childhood. Childhood. I'm not the middle child but I relate).
N - Naruto (Anime. Okay, childhood yes, also teenagehood and adulthood. Guy's been with me through everything, believe it. This show just means so much to me and I'm thankful that I got to grow up with him. Thank you, Kishimoto).
O - One Day At a Time (THANK YOU, NETFLIX! This is just one of the greatest shows on right now. I love comedy. I didn't expect it to be so emotional too. But damn it gets you right in the feels. My brother claims I'm exactly like Elena and our nephew is like Alex. I honestly don't mind. Elena is badass and strong as hell.)
P - Psych (It's just awesome? It's clever, it's funny, Shawn and Gus. The dramatics in extremely serious situations will never not make grin like a mad woman. Also private investigation shows seem to a weakness of mine. ) / Parks and Recreation (okay I never thought I'd like a mockumentary kind of series but this happened and proved me wrong and I just love this show and it's characters). / Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyara Pyara (Hindi Series; the pain of love is sweet and loveable. When your parents set you up with someone and you're like no way in hell and they're like okay but they you become best friends and fall in love and yeah. The name says it all, really). / Pinocchio (Asian series - one of the more complicated ones but I simply just loved these characters and actors to bits after watching it).
Q - Quantico (it's not really one of my favourites but I couldn't think of anything else and I do enjoy it. Priyanka Chopra has always been a fav since forever - Bollywood was life before I was even old enough to understand English - but it's because of this that I can understand Hindi without needing subtitles).
R - Rizzoli & Isles (who wouldn't love a show with two best friends kicking ass in the work place). / Revenge (I watched it cos I liked Emily from Everwood but the story was so intriguing and I just got addicted. It wasn't like anything I've ever seen). / Refresh Man (Asian series - officially my favourite Asian series of all time - again, thank you Netflix. Also ever since I've loved both Aaron Yan and Joanna Tseng and I'm on a mission to watch everything they've ever acted in - do you see my obsessing tenancies?).
S - Supergirl / Supernatural / Suits / Smallville (Okay! There's too many shows that start with an S. Smallville was my gateway into the superhero show - movie - comic obsession. And also I'm getting tired of commenting on everything).
T - The Good Place / The Office (US) / The Flash/ Teen Wolf (also too many with a T!)
U - Ugly Betty
V - Veronica Mars (of all time!! Man, again, random TV viewing = life changing TV show that sticks with you forever and Veronica Mars has definitely affected me way more than any other show. I couldn't get it out of my head ever since 2007! I waited for every Thursday just to watch it and naturally Thursday became my favourite day of the week - not Friday like normal scholars - nope. I think it's the way that it ended that contributed to my obsession - so much questions left unanswered and to a 12 year old girl the most important thing is of course that LoVe hadn't officially gotten back together. My mind wrote and rewrote endings and scenarios. Then I discovered fanfiction. And then I started writing. Veronica Mars made me a junkie but also helped me discover my passion. It's not just the show that makes it my #1 but the journey it's taken me on while it was on air and especially when it was off air. ALSO THE SHOW IS SIMPLY AMAZING EVEN WITHOUT ALL MY EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT - also one of the shows that I started watching and then my brother got hooked onto it).
W - What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? / Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo/ W: two worlds apart (all Asian series - OKAY, NETFLIX IS BLAMED FOR ALL OF THIS)
X - Is there anything but X-Men? I wouldn't really put the series on my favourite list but I do watch the X-Men cartoons and I have enjoyed it so imma let it be.
Y - Young Sheldon (Too smart for his own good Cooper.) / Yankee-kun to Megane-chan (Asian series - okay, this one can't be put on Netflix. It's the first Asian drama series I'd watched because of a manga that I loved).
Z - Zoey101 ('Cause there's nothing else I can think off and I enjoyed it when I was younger. I remember putting 101 after all of my usernames for everything).
So when I thought of this I thought I'd put one name for each alphabet but it didn't work out that way 'cause I obsess over everything.
I would love to get to know more about everyone's favourite shows. I'm tagging based on the Tumblr likes thing (also on my @marshmallowatheart account) and also urls I remember seeing often on the activity cos I wanted to tag as much people as possible. I'd have been cool if I could have went with the a - z for tagging but it's not working out like I wanted so next best. (Also if I didn't tag you and you wanna do it, please go for it, I'm really into this).
Anyone who wants to do this can and whoever doesn't want to it's cool! It takes time to think especially when you have to pick between things so if you want to, add as many as you like. You don't have to add comments on it if you don't want to, I just got carried away! And then got tired.

How Wonder Twins Became the Funniest DC Superhero Book
https://ift.tt/376wIrt
Mark Russell and Stephen Byrne have made the Wonder Twins the most unlikely superhero reboot success story of our time.

For all of the high profile storm clouds gathering on the horizon of the DC Universe between Year of the Villain, some decidedly Crisis-y vibes in Justice League, and the fact that the Batman Who Laughs gets his jollies by turning the heroes of the DC Universe into evil versions of themselves, you might think that it's all bad vibes in the DCU. Ah, but you would be wrong. Each month, Wonder Twins (yes, those Wonder Twins) delivers a blast of hilarity and social commentary, all set right under the noses of the Justice League at the Hall of Justice. Imagine a DC superhero comic as steeped in deep superhero and animation knowledge as a show like Venture Bros., packed with the same irreverent and manic energy, and with a similarly sympathetic eye towards the failings of its heroes and villains. That's Wonder Twins.
And really, it shouldn't work. The titular Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna, were alien sidekicks from the planet Exxor who hung around on episodes of the Super Friends in the late 1970s and early '80s. Both are shape shifters, although their respective power sets are somewhat limited in this regard. Jan can take on the "form of" anything related to water, while Jan takes on the "shape of" various animals. Of course they can only activate these powers when they're together, and really, there's only so many times a giant purple eagle can carry a bucket of water with a face on it to put out a fire or whatever, so their powers aren't exactly their most compelling aspect. Nor are there purple uniforms, snazzy as they are, or weirdly uncool-cool-for-like-5-minutes-in-the-late-90s-then-uncool-again haircuts really the thing that makes Wonder Twins such a great book.
No, that would be the jokes. So many of them. All of the jokes allowed by the Comics Code were that still a thing (which it thankfully is not). Jokes from the minds, pens, and brushes of Mark Russell (of the similarly hilarious and shockingly poignant The Flintstones and The Snagglepuss Chronicles) and Stephen Byrne (lots of cool things but especially a bunch of gorgeously animated genre-fan friendly viral videos that you have almost certainly seen...and if you haven't you should fix that right now). Jokes that are packed into the backgrounds of panels and arrive at such a pace you sometimes have moved on to another page before they've all fully landed. Hell, even jokes at the expense of Superman and that notorious buzzkill Batman.Â
But threaded through the humor is a genuine understanding of the human condition, a sympathetic eye given to all who deserve it (even the book's villains), and a genuine understanding of and even respect for how the DC Universe should work, even when we're all laughing with (or at) the sheer ridiculousness of it all. It's that balance that probably helped Wonder Twins, originally planned as a six part mini-series get expanded to 12. And with the first volume out now collecting those initial six issues, there's no better time to get to know Zan and Jayna...or the creators behind them. So...activate!Â
Den of Geek: The thing that really strikes me about this book is how animated it feels even on the page. Whatâs your process is like working together? Are you acting these scripts out? Are you hearing the script in your head when you start doing it?Â
Mark Russell: Well it starts with the process of trying to think of what I would tell myself if I had the ability to go back in time and talk to myself as a 16 or 17-year-old kid and think about what that means in the modern context. If I can tell them one thing today, what would it be? I try to tell it in as visual way as possible. I know that Stephen's going to take the ball and run with that in ways I can't even foresee. Our process is mainly me just telling him what I have to say and just waiting for him to come up with visual ways to make that happen.

Stephen Byrne: I guess from an art perspective, I have a background in animation and the main place where people know the characters from originally was the Super Friends cartoon. So I'm sort of trying to bring a little touch of that vibe into it with the bright colors and the simple line work, but then to inject it with more darkness and deepness and emotion. You can be more creative with the types of compositions and shots you're doing that they wouldn't have had the budget for in the old Wonder Twins cartoon. I want it to feel artistically familiar to how people know the characters, but also make it a much more emotional and meaningful.
Mark: I feel like Wonder Twins is ultimately sort of a dystopian book, but I feel like a dystopian America will be colorful.Â
Stephen: Doesn't dystopia imply futuristic? Isn't it just present day dystopia?
Mark: Right. It's a dystopia that will take place in the next 18 months. I feel like dystopias you see in literature are all gray and dark like George Orwell's 1984. They all kind of look like East Germany in 1976. I feel like in dystopian America, we might not even recognize the dystopia because it will look like a Taco Bell. It'll be like, purple and orange and stuff. That's why Steven is so good because he represents these dystopian topics, but in a way that's very sort of colorful and almost attractive.
read more: The Secret Origin of Superman Smashes the Klan
Stephen: I like that because I think of the book as dealing with some of the unresolvable tragedies of our time. That's overall in the themes, but then moment to moment on every single page, there's something that'll make you laugh or some funny joke. I try and keep it light and brief in the moment to moment because the story carries that extra satirical social commentary.
Mark: I think the central theme of the story is that the world is terrible, but we find things worth saving in it, that our lives are still good despite the fact the world is terrible.
Stephen: Sometimes.
Mark: We find ways to make life worth living and I think that's what the Wonder Twins do. They make the life they have worth living, even though theyâre exiled on a planet they know nothing about, living in a sort of screwed up culture that they had no role in creating, but they find a way to make it work for them.
There's so many background gags in there ... are these all written by Mark or is Stephen sneaking stuff in the background too?
Mark: I think it's both..
Stephen: But I'd say it's mostly you and you started doing it and then once in a while I will take the lead and put it in something because I know that's kind of the tone of what you're going for.
Mark: That's kind of how I get to know an artist. I say, "Here's some background gags I want you to sneak in at some point." Then I think that they get me after that point. They get the sensibility and they feel more comfortable including their own thing. I think the worst thing you can do is just have every scene in what looks like a CSI set. There needs to be things that give you your character and your perspective in the background that set it apart from other sorts of things. I'm very adamant about writing in background gags or details that will give it this air of not being like the set of a primetime TV show.
read more: New DC Universe Timeline Explained
Stephen: That's funny because I used to do satirical newspaper cartoons and I would do the main joke or whatever in the strip, but if possible, I would always sneak a little something in the background for people. I think people like that if they notice something that they know not everyone noticed. You get a little extra satisfaction out of it.
Mark: It makes the world feel more fully populated. Oh, this isn't just somebody making it up as they go along. They've created this whole world for me to live in.
Any of those jokes not make it into the final book?
Stephen: I probably didn't know about it. By the time it got to me, they were already gone.
Mark: There's some that were just a little too dark to make it into the Wonder Twins comic. It's like âwe don't really need these jokes in a comic about a guy who turns into waterâ was one of the comments I got from one of the editors.
Anything that you're allowed to talk about or not?
Mark: I'll leave it there.
Okay, that's fair. Stephen, have there ever been any that you had to get on Skype and say, "Mark, I'm not doing this. I'm not drawing this."
Stephen: No, I don't think so. I think by the time...
Mark: The editors get to do that. Then by the time Steven sees it, it's a little sanitized.
Stephen: When it gets to me, it's all very above board.
What kind of voices do you envision for these characters because obviously we all remember the Super Friends voices, but possibly my favorite panel in this whole series is still from the date story when Zan is like, "I'll have the scared tuna," with this look on his face. The only voice I can ever hear when I read that panel is Hank Venture's. How do you guys envision their voices?
Mark: Well I kind of approached the Wonder Twins like theyâre one really well adjusted person tragically split in half. Jayna's the one with the deeper intelligence and the wittiness and Zan's the guy who's optimistic and ready for any adventure, but he's kind of dopey and clueless about the world at the same time. That's the way I tried to have that. He's ultimately just optimistic and ready to venture opinions about things he knows nothing about. Jayna's more shy and sort of a quiet genius, but not ready to talk about the things that she knows very well.
read more: Inside the Return of the Justice Society of America to the DC Universe
Stephen: I hadn't specifically thought about their voices, but I think their characters come through in the words really strongly. When I'm drawing Zan, he's always over-excited and making a fool of himself and being sort of zany and weird, living in the moment. He's like a puppy. Whatever's going on, he's just excited about. Then I think of Jayna as much more introspective, contemplative, thoughtful...
Mark: She sees the deeper tragedy in everything around her.
Stephen: Yeah, very self serious. Zan is usually bouncing off the walls and smiling and she's usually sitting, thinking about everything that's terrible all the time. I have thought about it in the way that I do their body language and stuff like that, but not specifically their voices.
Mark: Jayna's probably more of the person I am and Zan's probably more of the person I wish I was.
Stephen: Yeah, I'm a Jayna for sure.
How much of this book is an actual critique of superheroes and how much of this is you trying to relate to superheroes in terms of this world?
Mark: Well, I think a lot of it is my critique of society in general, which is that our institutions no longer serve us. The institutions were created to serve us, but then at some point it changes. And so we then begin serving the institutions, and we forget why they exist except for that we know that we must serve them. And I feel at some point the superheroes themselves become an institution, and they forget why they're superheroes. They forget why they're doing this. They just know that this is what they've always done. And so I try to question that. I try to force them into these circumstances where they have to wonder why am I doing this or is this the best way to serve society, five superheroes converging on a purse snatcher? Is this really what society needs more than anything? I couldn't be doing anything else more valuable with my powers than this? I try to ask these questions in my scripts.
Stephen: I think of it as a commentary on superheroes but also a celebration at the same time. Like the best self-referential work, it can poke fun at the thing it's about also being a great version of what it's about.
What about body language? The body language that you give Superman is not the body language you often associate with the character.
Stephen: We're seeing him in a different context than we usually would. And so he's dealing with interns which isn't his usual thing. And so you're just getting to see a slightly different side of him.
Mark: He's more of a father figure in this one because he's got these two foundlings that he brought over from Exxor to Earth. He's their father figure now. It's his super power not being so much his speed or his strength, but his wisdom, and it's a side of Superman you don't see a lot, but just him understanding what it is as an outsider the human race needs. And then explaining that to Zan and Jayna I think sort of defined Superman for this series in a different way than he is sometimes presented in other series.
You're often writing characters who are the smartest people in the room. You have a Filo Math and Polly Math and you just did that great Riddler special as well. That's not the easiest thing to do, especially in the superhero world. So how do you put yourself in that head space and then how do you distinguish them from the characters that are less visible?
Mark: I just think smart people are more interesting. I also think that we are all sort of the geniuses of ourselves. We all understand our own perspective better than anybody else. So what I try to do is just give the character room to explore right or wrong. This is why I feel the way I do and make a stand for why they are the way they are. And I feel like that's what allows people to connect with these characters to make them feel relevant. It's like we all have that moment where the world does not understand us, but if we only had this moment where we could talk to somebody through the pages of a comic book and explain ourselves, then we would be the heroes of our own story.
read more: Frank Miller's Return to the Dark Knight Universe
Stephen: My answer is much less sophisticated. I draw the intelligent people wearing suits and ties and glasses. There's some body language and expression stuff too, but that's definitely part of it is just sort of the way they present themselves. They're smart people.
Since that was way too straightforward and serious an answer, let's go back to the funny stuff. And what do you feel is the most ridiculous thing you've gotten to draw in the book so far? Whether it was the funniest or whether it was a thing that you were just like, how the hell am I going to make this work in this comic?
Stephen: First thing that came to mind, although there's so many, right? It's like there's something every issue that's insane. But the first thing that comes to mind was a giant gorilla punching an alcoholic vampire through the air, which I was just like, this is so weird and funny and comedic in tone and yet in like three pages time, you're going to get an emotional punch in the gut for the conclusion of that story, which was so tragic. So I love drawing the funny stuff and I love drawing the emotional stuff and I love that you can kind of oscillate between them in such a short space of time. I think a lot of that is down to Mr. Russell.
Mark: And I think one of the things I try to bring out in the scripts is that these are two dimensional, funny comic book characters where there's always a third dimension lurking somewhere in the background. There is a backstory or a tragic shadow to this person that makes what they're doing makes sense and Stephen does a very good job of bringing that out in the artwork.

Sandra Bernhard Still Has Her Blunt AF Opinions
Before unloading her candid thoughts on TV co-star Roseanne Barrâs alt-right politics and fellow comic Kathy Griffinâs viral Trump-beheading pic (âIt just wasnât funnyâ), Sandra Bernhard proclaims herself, quite aptly, to be âno-nonsense.â That has been, after all, her way since the â70s, when lambasting Hollywoodâs whoâs-who first became a calling card for the fearless comedian, actress, and musician.
Then, from 1991 to 1997, she famously put a face to bisexuality not just as herself â Bernhard was out from the get-go â but also as Nancy Bartlett on ABCâs hit sitcom Roseanne. Introduced in Season Four as the estranged lesbian wife of Arnie Thomas (Tom Arnold), Nancy, who later came out as bisexual, gets chummy with Roseanne Conner and Roseanneâs younger sister, Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf).
Bernhard, 62, will revisit her groundbreaking character during the showâs revival. As for the controversy regarding Roseanne and her TV alter egoâs support for President Trump? âRoseanne is gonna be another round of really fun and really smart television,â Bernhard tells me. âRoseanne has never turned on the gay community. Roseanne likes to stir the pot. She always has. So, I guess thatâs the way sheâs doing it now, and I donât agree with any of the Trump shit, but I think sheâll transcend that, and the show will still be amazing.â
What can we expect politically from the Roseanne reboot?Â
I think theyâre gonna do a deep dive into where the working class is at right now. I mean, maybe not as deep as you would need, considering that half of the working class who donât have their industrial-ass jobs anymore are strung out on opioids. Thatâs not very much fun; I donât think theyâll go there. [Laughs.] But I think weâre in a real crossroads in this country, and Roseanne has always been good at revealing that â and at the same time making it funny and moving and insightful. Iâm only in the last episode, so I donât know exactly how theyâre approaching it. I know there will be very personal stories like there always were, as opposed to globalizing it. I think thatâs what makes the show special.
I imagine youâve been hearing about the backlash Roseanneâs politics have ignited since the reboot was announced.Â
I was hearing about that way before they announced the reboot, and I just dropped out of the conversation because I donât want to get into that on Twitter. You canât do that; it goes nowhere. And everybody who makes political decisions also has to live with the fallout. That goes for famous, successful people and for people on the street. If you voted for Trump and you thought it was gonna be a lark and funny, the results are right there in front of you every day.
RELATED:
youtube
My hope is that it might bridge some severe societal gaps, perhaps open some minds, maybe even my own. But itâs been very difficult for people who didnât vote for Trump to even begin to understand or empathize with someone who supported him.
I donât have any empathy for people who voted for him. Honestly, I really donât. Itâs obvious that he didnât know anything about the working-class population; he just exploited it, and [his supporters] were naive and unwilling to read or to know what was really going on. He played them â and to a certain extent, the few people who are still in his corner. He still plays them. So itâs just kind of a bummer.
A lot of people have strong opinions about the liberal-minded cast returning to a show led by a Trump supporter.Â
Iâm glad they do. She should hear it. And itâs better for her to hear it from the people that have supported her and watched her show than it is from me. I mean, weâre friends, weâre friendly, and Iâll continue to do the show. But it gets underneath your skin when 20 million people who used to watch your show are like, âWhat the f*ck?â
She seems to know how people feel about her politics. At the Golden Globes, presenting with co-star John Goodman, she said, âIâm kind of known for creating some great drama.â
Of course she knows.
WATCH:
youtube
Well, Iâm excited to have Nancy Bartlett back. You told me in 2013 that you didnât think Nancy would have a place on the show if it ever returned.Â
Itâs not that she didnât have a place. But I didnât think theyâd be able to fit her story back in because of all the new characters, and the family, and reestablishing whatâs been going on politically. So, when they added the extra episode and wrote me in, I was thrilled.
Nancy was one of the earliest portrayals of bisexuality on TV. What surprised you most about how her sexuality was treated on the show in the â90s?Â
I mean, she was fun, and it was a fun concept that she ran from being married to Tom Arnold into the relationship with Morgan Fairchild. It was sort of a lark at first, and of course it evolved. They wouldnât let me kiss Morgan Fairchild under the mistletoe â we had to cut the kiss â so thatâs how far weâve come in terms of what you see sexually on TV.
But yeah, she was a funny, kooky, free-spirited character who got to do things and say things that were part of the evolution of sexuality on TV. It wasnât intentional â it wasnât like we were trying to do something groundbreaking. But that is how Roseanne is and was. She just did things that felt organic and authentic. She ended up having the actual kiss with Merle Hemingway [at a gay bar that Nancy took her to]. But nonetheless, Nancyâs fun, and if they picked up the show again, theyâll expand her story.
Weâll get more Nancy if thereâs another season?
Oh yeah, absolutely. For sure, yeah.
Roseanne will have a genderfluid grandson, Mark, played by newcomer Ames McNamara, on the show as well.
Yes.
What are your thoughts on the show continuing to be inclusive?
I just think there has to be a little bit of everything in all the shows now, and I donât know. Iâve gotta see the show before I can comment. Heâs in my episode, but to the extent of what theyâre trying to do with that character, weâll have to see.
Speaking more generally, how do you feel about representation as far as LGBTQ people go on TV?
Itâs certainly gotten a helluva lot better than when Nancy first came on the scene. And I think with each year that goes by, especially with the advent of Hulu and Netflix and Amazon, thereâs been major breakthroughs.
Are you currently enjoying any shows with LGBTQ characters?
I watch 9-1-1 just because I think itâs a ridiculous show. Everywhere you turn thereâs new, interesting gay characters. But I donât go to a show for that. For me, my life has never been informed by that. Iâve always been comfortable with who I am sexually. Iâve been sexually fluid, Iâve broken all the ground rules since I was 17 years old. So, Iâve never had any need for somebody to be my role model. Iâve been my own role model. So, itâs a non-issue. But I think for the public at large itâs been a great time and a revolutionary time for people to see all kinds of characters â racially, sexually, women, men â come to life in a new way.
Have you heard of the very gay-centric Schittâs Creek?
Honey, I was one of the first people to be hip to it!
Oh, snap.
[Laughs.] I know, yes. But yeah, of course. Love it. Dan Levy is terrific â super funny and smart.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Iâve got three scripted projects Iâm trying to get off the ground right now, so thatâs a lot of my focus, and itâs a lot of hard work. So, Iâm chipping away at that and, of course, continuing to go up for roles as an actress and do my live performing.
What kind of scripts are you working on?Â
Theyâre all comedic. One is based on my early years in L.A., when I started off as a manicurist. One is a project with [performance artist] Justin Vivian Bond. We wrote a musical about six years ago called Arts & Crafts, and weâre trying to make it into a TV series.
I remember you telling me youâd never stoop so low to do a reality show. Still out of the question?
Yeah, listen, if I havenât done it by now, Iâm certainly not gonna do it at this late date.
How do you feel about the way comedy has addressed the Trump era?
Everybodyâs speaking about it and being funny and creative about it. And, obviously, people like Bill Maher and those types do it in a more political way. I think itâs been really interesting.
Has your recent comedy reflected current politics?
Sort of, kind of through the back door. I donât hit people over the head talking about that stuff because so many people are good at doing it verbatim, so I try to keep it more global than just obvious.
Did you think Kathy Griffin went too far with the picture of her holding Trumpâs decapitated head?
Itâs not about going too far â it just wasnât funny. And sheâs not political. Why is she suddenly jumping on the bandwagon? Thatâs not what she does. And it wasnât smart enough or interesting enough. That was the biggest crime.
But Kathy Griffin has been politically engaged and an activist for the gay community.
Sheâs an activist? I donât know. I donât think sheâs an activist, frankly. I mean, thatâs â she certainly takes advantage of the gay population in her own way, but I donât think sheâs done anything earth shattering for⌠I mean, I donât agree.
Who would you consider an entertainer and an activist?
I mean, Iâm an activist for being a human being. Thereâs bigger fish to fry, and my work is inherently political, and itâs been inherently LGBTQ-informed because itâs who I am; itâs what Iâve done from the beginning. I donât call my audience âmy gays.â My audience is my audience, and everybody in it forms an alliance every night. You perform for the entire crowd â itâs not about singling anyone out. And if your work is very, very daring and interesting, then smart people come to it, whether theyâre gay, straight, black, white, men, women. I mean, you gotta be able to get underneath whatâs really going on culturally, and then youâre always gonna have a smart audience sitting in front of you.
Who else in the comedy world can really dig into the cultural zeitgeist?
I donât have a litany of people Iâm sitting here thinking about. Iâm sorry. Itâs, like, too hard to do that. Right now the people who are impressing me the most are all these kids from the school in Florida. Theyâre activists. Went through a terrible trauma, and theyâve been able to transform it into total activation, and that to me is really impressive and exciting. To talk about entertainers and people â itâs easy for all of us to do all that stuff because weâre not under duress. But when youâve been practically severely injured or murdered [and you speak out about it], yeah, thatâs something to really applaud and stand by.

What can we expect politically from the Roseanne reboot?
I imagine youâve been hearing about the backlash Roseanneâs politics have ignited since the reboot was announced.

A lot of people have strong opinions about the liberal-minded cast returning to a show led by a Trump supporter.

Well, Iâm excited to have Nancy Bartlett back. You told me in 2013 that you didnât think Nancy would have a place on the show if it ever returned.
What surprised you most about how her sexuality was treated on the show in the â90s?

Interview Chris Cummins

Archie Comics
riverdale
Back in the early 1990s, Archie Comics released an ambitious series of titles aimed at illustrating how the veteran indie publisher could tell different types of stories using their characters. These various books ranged from interesting failures (Jughead's Diner, Explorers of the Unknown) to regrettable curiosites (Archie's R/C Racers, no). Yet much like Marty McFly unleashing rock and roll at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, one of these experiments was so far ahead of its, er, time that it would take a generation to pick up what Archie was throwing down.
That title was Jughead's Time Police.
Despite only running for a measly six issues, Jughead's Time Police foreshadowed the Archie creative renaissance that began a decade ago by telling a status quo-shattering story that pushed the parameters of these characters while maintaining what made them so lovable in the first place.
In the original run, Jughead became an agent for the Time Police, an agency determined to protect the proper flow of history. Utilizing a special version of his famed whoopee cap to travel through time, he is partnered with January McAdams, a deputy with the agency who just so happens to be Archie's descendant whose home timeline in this 29th century. Together, they encountered historical figures and battled the villainous Morgan Le Fay in an effort to preserve time from falling into the usual chaos that paradoxes and mucking about with the past (and future can cause).
It was a weird book, and one whose stories featured DNA traces of everything from Quantum Leap to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Doctor Who to Moonlighting (the latter in reference to the would-be romance between Jughead and January). It may have all been a bit too jarring for 1990 readers, but now that Archie is known for shaking things up, audiences have gone back and rediscovered the series. Following popularity on the Archie digital app, a trade paperback of the complete Jughead's Time Police was issued last April, paving the way for the latest example of how everything old is new again, a forthcoming five issue mini-series reboot of the title from the creative team of writer Sina Grace (Iceman) and artist Derek Charm (who recently worked on the Jughead relaunch for the company, and is also known for his work on The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl). Matt Herms is the colorist, with Jack Morelli working as letterer for the book, which will become an ongoing title if the demand is there following the mini-series' launch. Fingers crossed.
Via e-mail, we had the opportunity to speak to Grace and Charm to get their thoughts on why Jughead's Time Police has endured, and what we can expect from the new title.
Given the timey wimey nature of the material, will this be a reboot of the story, a continuation of the original adventures or something else entirely?
Sina Grace - The best way to put it is, weâre catching a version of the Jughead we know and love from the Mark Waid/Chip Zdarsky/ Ryan North books. His efforts to prevent the catastrophe that was his pie baking contest end up creating a pretty massive space-time continuum issue. Heâll be meeting January McAndrews for the first time. Thatâs all I can say for now.
How did you each become involved in the project?
Derek Charm - Weâd all been talking about doing something new with Jughead for a while, pretty much since right after the previous series ended, but it was about finding the right angle and the right story and everyoneâs schedules lining up. Iâm glad it took as long as it did because itâs awesome to be diving back into this world with enough space between what we did before to reevaluate certain things and hopefully come up with something fresh and exciting.
Grace - Well, of all the Archie crew, I love, love, love Jughead. No matter who interprets him, I feel like I totally relate. I had been trying to find a project to work on with editor Alex Segura. First it was a standard Jughead series with a very grounded plot, and it wasnât a fit. We stayed in touch, meaning I persistently hounded him and begged for a chance to play with the Archie cast. It was actually his idea for me to revisit those stories and see if I had my take on Jughead needing to put on his time travel cap.
What is it about Jughead and January's relationship that has connected with readers?
Grace - Iâll just be blunt: I think at face value itâs because January idolizes Jughead, and Jughead loves the access to a future where heâs an iconic historical figure. That being said, I truly think that fans enjoy seeing Jughead get to play the lead in an action story with an equally zingy co-captain. He totally respects January, and their chemistry is unique.
Derek, obviously you have a great deal of experience in working with these characters, how will you approach your art for this book differently than your traditional Jughead work, if at all?
Charm - Iâm treating this a whole new thing visually. For every character and location that comes up, I try to take a new look and do something different than we did before. Iâm really excited for whatâs coming with the different time periods and different takes on the established characters that weâll be seeing. Also, itâs hard to believe, but The CWâs Riverdale wasnât around when I started on Jughead the first time, so thatâs a whole new aspect of Archie history to take inspiration from.Â
Are you personally a fan of the sci-fi comedy genre? If so, what are some of your influences?
Grace - You know, I never even made the connection that there was a category for that genre! But yeah, for sure! Bill & Ted is obviously a hallmark. Is Back to the Future sci-fi comedy, or just a sci-fi movie that happens to be funny? I really liked Russian Doll. The humor and character play in Firefly still sticks with me. Thor: Ragnarok was absolutely amazing and hilarious and deeeeeeply sci-fi. I need to spend more time with Future Man, man.
What are some science fiction works you draw influence from, and can we expect to see nods to these in this new series?
Charm - Back to the Future has been a really big one, obviously, but mainly for the tone. Sinaâs scripts are so quick and fun and itâs the same kind of vibe where Doc Brown just has a time machine car and itâs beside the point because things are happening and you just have to keep up with the story and have fun.Â
Why do you think Jughead's Time Police has gathered such a cult following since its initial run?
Grace - Everyone loves a good time travel story, and I think Jugheadâs really the only character in that cast who would revel in the fun of it all. Plus, the 29th century is such a cool place to be. Thatâs what Iâm most excited about with this series -- weâll be spending a good amount of time in the future, and exploring what that world looks like. Derek has already turned in some amazing work, and I too am now trying to figure out how jump forward by a few months to June and see readersâ reactions!
What can you tell us about what to expect with this series?
Grace - Anybody who has read my work over at Marvel Comics knows I have a deep understanding of how complicated time travel can be, and how much fun divergent timelines can be, too! I learned a lot at the House of Ideas, and Iâm excited to basically crib âDays of Future Pastâ for the Archieverse.
Just kidding. Iâm gonna have time-displaced Riverdale middle school students show up. I tease! But, for real? There may be some pouches in the series.
Jughead's Time Police hits stores on June 12th, and Den of Geek has your exclusive first look at variant covers from Tyler Boss, Robert Hack with Kelly Fitzpatrick, Tracy Yardley, and Francesco Francavilla. Take a look:
We'll have more on Jughead's Time Police in the months ahead....or is that five minutes ago? This time travel stuff gets confusing quick.
