a little more serious answer: they can tell something is going on with optimus and they desperately want to pretend it's not. they don't want to know how he's aware of things he shouldn't be, how he knows stuff that should have long been forgotten, how he seems to be more familiar with them than he should be. how sometimes he speaks and it's like the dead are talking through him. how sometimes he will answer to empty air and somehow they can just tell what he's responding to. who he is talking to.

they Know. and they really, really want to pretend they don't.

they already carry the guilt of failing them once. the idea of doing it once more is unbearable and they'd rather deceive themselves than face it. they'd rather their friends stay dead and gone than think of them seeing what they've become.

ten years from now when we look back at the initial hysteria around ai image generation we will understand that what actually ends up protecting people will be talking realistically about the positives and negatives of generative ai as a tool, developing standards within artist communities about what respectful and productive ai use looks like in commercial pipelines, pushing for transparency about these processes, and developing strong communities with fellow artists to try and leverage what little power we have against the job insecurity that has been plaguing creative fields for decades.

regardless of whether or not you agree with them about the nature of Real Art and the idea of art style theft, the fact of the matter is the hardline no ai purists are going to fail. there is not any version of reality where generative AI is banned or canned and if that is your goal you are not going to get it. all you do by dogpiling random independent creators for the crime of expressing positive opinions about AI is show that your priorities don't lie with bettering conditions for artists as a collective, you're exclusively interested in punishing anyone who steps out of line.

While I think the moment in cql where Meng Yao– still bleeding from a stab wound in his chest btw– realizes Lan Xichen is in danger and decides to save the man who was so kind to him in cloud recesses is cute and all, nothing will ever beat the book for me. Little bookkeeper civilian Meng Yao, who has not had a serious chance to make his dreams of being a cultivator come true in fucking years, out of nowhere gets the fucking sect leader of Gusu Lan dropped right in his lap?

It's such a great example of Meng Yao's multilayered motivations to me. Because is civilian Meng Yao thinking of all the ways he can use this? Of the fact that having a great sect leader in his debt is the best thing that could happen to him? Duh. Obviously.

Is he very purposeful about appearing to Lan Xichen as a kind young man full of untapped potential, brave and willing to put his life on the line even though he really doesn't know so much about about cultivators, no sir, except a little he picked up here and there, because you see his father– 👉👈 Of course he is!

But the way through which he does that is... by actually saving Lan Xichen's life, at no doubt significant personal risk. The way he makes Lan Xichen believe he's kind and selfless is by... being kind and selfless. Just because he's doing it on purpose doesn't mean he's not doing it.

Is it lying if you want people to think you're nice and so you're nice to them? Isn't that just called being nice? Yes, he is very purposeful about how he appears to people, and very carefully crafts an image based on what he wants them to think of him, but most of the time he does that simply by... actually being the kind of person he wants to appear as. He still did the kind things he did, regardless of his motivations for doing them.

Sounds like a routine. Which is a sign of his resilience and determination, that he regularly sits and thinks of any possible way out. He hasn't given up. He's not resorting to panicked risky attempts yet either.

But it's also very sad. His deadline is coming up fast and there's only so long he can keep going like this. But he has nothing else he can do, at least nothing he can think of.
