How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

Aw man is this intentionally worded to be really hard to answer? I get that it says ‘written’ and not ‘posted’ but then what constitutes a ‘fandom?’ I definitely wrote fics for stuff I was interested in long before I even knew the word ‘fic’ - I did it throughout my childhood, and then in high school, and while I didn’t do it as much in college, it still happened from time to time. So a lot of the books/movies/tv shows/plays/musicals I wrote things for aren’t really fandoms, and frankly, I had to check my old folder just now to even remember some of them existed. I’ll just list the ones that I know for sure had fandoms, since that’s more fun (and embarrassing), right?

Obviously Doctor Who, classic and modern, Torchwood, Sherlock Holmes (ironically more of these seem to be about the books, but yes, I will admit, some for that tv show too), Les Mis, a couple different Marvel comics & movies, Good Omens, hell, I even found a Night Vale fic in there just now.

And I know there are other older things not even in that folder, some of which never made it to a computer at all, so if I had to ballpark a number I’d probably say around 25ish but really, who knows?

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I try to! Sometimes I take a long time to do so but for the most part, I usually get around to it. The rare exception would be if I first saw the comment when I was super busy/distracted and then felt like way too much time passed before I noticed it again, that it might be awkward if I said something at that point.

I do genuinely enjoy hearing what people think, but I’m also weirdly terrified of making anyone feel like they have to reply to my comments. I know that’s probably a little strange, but it’s actually a large part of why I made this Ao3 account in the first place - my original one, from high school, is followed by some long-time friends of mine who aren’t interested in this fandom, some of whom are involved in art & writing professionally. The thought of anyone like that reading something I wrote out of friendliness or even just curiosity and potentially having to pretend they liked it for the same reasons stressed me tf out, so I like having this virtually anonymous one because I can relax knowing that anyone who reads or interacts with something I wrote has probably done so only because they wanted to, rather than feeling obligated, and there’s no pressure on them to be nice to me about it if anything I write or post annoys them - so I really hope nobody who does just know me as an anonymous blog has ever worried about offending me by not replying to something, trust me, I’m perfectly happy with it!

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I don’t think I’ve really written any angsty endings? I guess the answer would have to be Reckless just because it involves the characters arguing about sad/weighty things and there isn’t really any solution to those issues - but even then I think I ended it with a kind of acceptance that stops it from really qualifying as angst? I also set it in the the same universe as other fics, so maybe that doesn’t even count as an ending? Am I that bad at ending things on angst? Lol

Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Obviously none of the fics I’ve posted are crossovers but I’m trying to think now if any of my WIP’s are - I’ve definitely poached setting/premise ideas from other media, but in terms of actual crossovers . . . I’ve got a few cross-era or cross-Doctor, a few involving Torchwood, but that’s already the same universe, so the only thing that’d qualify as a true crossover would be some vague pieces of a fic where Jamie, Zoe, and Two end up on the Enterprise, since I think the 60s series of Star Trek and Dr Who feel kind of compatible, don’t they? In fact, aren’t there like officially licensed crossover comics or something? Or did I make that up? Idk, and the ideas are very loose, so it’s not much of a WIP either

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I’ve never written smut, but I’m wondering if it’s possible that could change soon. There’s a longish multi-chapter fic I’ve been working on for a frankly embarrassing amount of time, and the plot does call for a sex scene at one point towards the end, but I can’t seem to make up my mind on how - uh, I guess the word is explicit? - it should get. I know I could easily do a fade to black/implication thing, but it’s kind of a source of contention and anxiety for the characters, so to skip over writing the actual scene and just revisit them afterwards rings of “and they slept together and now everything’s fine!” which feels kinda cheap to me - in this context, anyway - and not the right payoff for a long fic that’s otherwise more of an interpersonal drama/slightly a period piece, if I had to place it in a genre. I feel like my aversion to actually writing the scene might just be prudishness I should get over, or maybe just self-doubt, because I know I’d rather have a well-written, funny, character-development-supporting sex scene than nothing at all, but since I’ve never had any interest in writing a scene like that before, I don’t know if I can do it well, and I also don’t want to ruin a fic I’m otherwise proud of by doing it badly... ugh I have to figure this out

What’s your all time favorite ship?

I mean, it’s gotta be Two & Jamie. I’ve shipped things before with varying levels of investment, but I’ve never been able to use the term ‘otp’ in a literal sense until I came across them, and now it’s already basically gone out of fashion, go figure!

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I’m not sure if I have one? My WIP doc is huge, but I don’t actually intend to get around to finishing everything in it, so I’d like to think that anything I’ve currently singled out to complete can actually get done.

That said, I do have a few AU’s that I don’t really plan to finish, but it might be cool if I could. Two of them are for all the main + some supporting characters of the Second Doctor’s era - one’s a modern day school teachers AU, and the other is a typical fantasy/fairy tale AU. Another is just Two/Jamie, based on Doctor Faustus (specifically the Marlowe play version) but right now there are two different versions of the ending coexisting in my head. I’ve written parts of scenes & some gen. backstory for all of those ideas, but I don’t know if I’ll ever try to finish them, or what form a finished product would even take - a series of one-shots set in the same universe? one long multi-chapter fic with some kind of overarching plot? And the amount of context/worldbuilding a big AU like these would require might not make them very appealing fics for people to read, so maybe it is better if I just keep them to myself, since in my head I already know what’s going on in those worlds lol.

What are your writing strengths?

I honestly don’t know. I haven’t had a creative writing class since middle school, and since then I’ve only ever shown creative writing to others in a fandom context, so it’s been a while since I’ve discussed it or gotten critical feedback. I suppose when I work in other arts or even academic writing contexts, people usually say I’m kind of insightful or at least detail oriented, which might just be another way of saying I overthink things, but I like to imagine I’m decent at finding little points of interest to expand upon.

What are your writing weaknesses?

If you’ve read this far I feel like you must know what I’m about to say: I do not know how to be concise.

Usually when I’m writing a fic, I put down the dialogue first on its own, leaving out the action of the scene and whatever plot/context led there, even if I’ve already figured all of that out. But then when I go to add those things in, they’re always longer than I wanted them to be. I don’t mind writing something long, but I don’t want my fics to be a slog to get through either, and there can be a point at which the stuff I’ve added for context overwhelms the stuff that I wanted the fic to be about in the first place, so it becomes a structural/proportion issue too. I haven’t completely given up on any fics because of this yet, but there’s one I’ve been struggling with for a couple months now - probably because I’m even second-guessing myself on which scenes need to be written out and which can just be referenced like a recap. Hopefully I figure that one out soon.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

((this is karma isn’t it? i posted a fic last week with two words of gaelic in it and was worried about that and now this is karma))

In general, I don’t want to do it. I feel like you’ve gotta have a really good grasp of a language to write dialogue & speech patterns for someone who’s a native speaker, and since I’m far from fluent in any language the characters I write for are, I wouldn’t feel confident writing any significant amount of dialogue in, say, Gaelic.

As a sidenote, though, I kinda love it when other people do it, particularly for Jamie. Irish (Gaeilge) and Scottish (Gàidhlig) are both languages I’ve wanted to learn for a long time, because my family’s fresh out of living speakers of either & I think that’s a shame, but I started with Irish and at the moment I’m still very much learning it. As different as they are, it still helps me understand parts of lyrics or texts that I come across in Gàidhlig fairly frequently, so when it comes up in a fic I get to feel like I’m being responsible and practicing, and it’s great when I can actually understand what’s being said.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

I’m gonna go with Harry Potter even though that’s probably not a perfectly accurate answer - it’s almost certainly the first thing that has a fandom that I ever wrote for, but it was in a notebook when I was a kid and never something that I even typed on a computer, much less posted online or shared with other members of a fandom. But even then, I’m sure it wasn’t the first pre-existing fictional universe I ever set an original story in, because I did that a lot when I was a kid, it’s just hard to remember those clearly or on any kind of timeline.

What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

I’m very partial to Across the Gap, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that ranked first on the kudos thing above - but I’ve also got a soft spot for So Merrily We’ll Sing. It’s so self-indulgent it feels silly saying ‘it was so easy to write!’ but I guess having a fic that’s already just 100% headcaonons and fluff tied together by a song you really love does prevent it from being much of a labor (I also managed to refrain from making that one unnecessarily long, so that’s another win there)

Summary: Now that the Avengers have begun to settle into the Manor, they get to know the inhabitants.

Steve awoke in one of the most comfortable beds he had ever slept in. For a moment he was relaxed as the sun streamed in through the large window. Then he sat straight up. How did he get here?

Then he remembered. After the Justice League had left, Batman - he still felt weird calling him Bruce - led them into an elevator which emerged in a richly adorned sitting room. The entrance to the elevator being in the Grandfather clock which lay to the side of the room. A butler - a butler! Even Tony didn’t have one of those - had met them there. Batman had informed him that they would be staying for a while, and the butler had quickly led them to free rooms, assuring the Avengers that clothes would be provided before dinner. He had spoken the truth, as a change of clothes were provided shortly. Steve suspected they were pilfered from the manor’s residents.

Steve got out of bed and went over to the neatly stacked pile of clothes, and got dressed. He had been given cargo pants and a gray t-shirt. He then left his room and began to follow the smell of breakfast - a heavenly mixture of coffee, maple syrup, bacon, and blueberry pancakes.

Nat, Tony, and Clint were already in the kitchen when he arrived. They were sitting on stools at the island along with Tim Drake and Cassandra Cain. The Butler was placing a heaping pile of pancakes on the table whilst handing Tim a pot of coffee.

Steve walked over and sat down. "Good morning," he said. "They look great sir, thank you."

The Butler smiled. "Call me Alfred, everyone else does." He spoke with a crisp british accent, which Steve hadn’t noticed the evening before.

Steve nodded as he took some pancakes and bacon. Everyone else started chowing down as well, with the exception of Tim. Tim looked horrible, if Steve was being honest. He had dark circles under his eyes, and his lids were drooped.

Tim was about to pour some coffee, when Steve noticed he was clearly going to miss the mug. Steve opened his mouth to say something when Cassandra Cain reached over and casually pushed the mug over.

Tim filled up the mug. He either hadn’t noticed, or hadn’t cared.

Cassandra went back to her  seat. "You sleep?"

Tim shrugged. "No more than usual. I had patrol, then worked on that eastside murder case."

Cassandra frowned. “ Sleep ,” she said vehemently.

"What's patrol?" Clint asked curiously.

Tim frowned. “We go out and patrol Gotham. Take care of crime. Typical vigilante stuff.”

This gave Steve pause. “You handle petty crime?”

Tim blinked. “You don’t? I thought you said you were superheroes?"

Natasha nodded. “So you’re like Peter. He protects Manhattan. The rest of us only got together due to an alien invasion. We’re what you would call the . . . heavy hitters.”

Cassandra nodded. “City needs us. Without . . .” She pursed her lips and moved her hands around. “Bad things happen.”

“Once you have finished, might I suggest you explore the manor or cave?” Alfred said as he placed more bacon on the table. “Master Bruce has a full gym and training areas in the Batcave which you are welcome to use. After all, if you are to stay here, you might as well have something to do.”

Steve stood up from his now finished meal. “Thank you Alfred, I believe I will. I think I remember the way to the cave. Thank you for the meal.”

Tony nodded. “See you down there, I guess.” Clint and Natasha agreed.

Steve entered the cave to find that he was not the first one there. Standing on the main platform was an honest-to-god cow.

It was brown and white, with stubby horns and a baleful look. On its forehead was a brown patch that looked suspiciously like a bat. The cow mood.

“Bat-Cow! Get away from the invader!” Damian Wayne swooped in out of nowhere and landed in front of the now named Bat-Cow. “What are you doing in the cave?” He asked, his sword drawn and pointed at Steve’s chest.

“The butler - Alfred -  said I could come down here to workout,” Steve replied. He was still trying to get over the fact that a cow was in front of him, being guarded by an eleven year-old in black training clothes that looked a lot like a ninja’s.

“T-t,” Damian replied, clearly unimpressed.

“Well, um. . . Is that a cow?” Steve couldn’t help himself.

“Yes of course. Are you blind? This is Bat-Cow. Bat-Cow, this is one of the invaders by the name of Steve Rogers. Stay away, he’s probably not even a vegetarian.” With that, the boy and the cow strolled away, and Steve turned to go.

Steve found the gym platform and set to work. It was quite nice equipment, and Steve enjoyed using it. He wasn’t the only one, as both Jason Todd and Stephanie Brown were there with him in gym clothes. They both wore gray sweatpants, but Stephanie also wore a purple sports bra, almost the same color as her suit. Stephanie was using some resistance bands and Jason was bench pressing.

Steve walked in muttering about cows, which gained a smile from Jason, who inevitably heard him.

“If a cow surprises you,” Jason said between lifts, “then wait till you see Goliath.”

“I’m sorry, what?” Steve asked as he settled into a warm-up.

“One of Damian’s other . . . pets.” Stephanie said, a grimace on her face. “But boy, I can’t wait till I see your face!” She laughed as she finished up, and moved onto chin-ups.

Steve frowned, but let it slide. There was silence after a while as he settled into his routine. Eventually he moved over to bench presses. He began to set up the weights, glad there were so many, as he usually needed a lot more than the average man.

Steve looked over at Jason, who was still pressing. On closer inspection he was benching almost 400 pounds.

“Do you have super strength,” Steve asked before he could help himself.

Jason snorted and finished up his last few reps, setting the bar down then sitting up. He wiped his face as he answered Steve. “Nope, I don’t need superstength to get these babies.”

He lifted up his arms and flexed. This sent Stephanie into a giggle fit. “You,” She said between snorts, “Jason Peter Todd, are utterly ridiculous.”

Jason smiled as well before turning back to Steve. “But really, none of us bats have super strength. All we have is skill, and kicka** personalities.”

Steve frowned, but nodded anyway. He went to begin bench pressing when Stephanie asked him, “That Stark guy said you were a supersoldier, I assume that super strength comes with it?”

“Yup. There was an experimental serum that the scientists of World War II chose me to test. I worked in the army for a while, before I got frozen in ice due to taking down a Nazi ship. I got rescued and joined the Avengers to help stop an alien invasion.”

Jason muttered something that sounded suspiciously like “cheater.”

Stephanie glared at him. Before standing up and speaking cheerfully “Well, I’m going to go spar with whoever’s available. See you later?” Stephanie walked off, grabbing a purple water bottle on the way out.

Jason nodded. He moved on in his workout, and Steve went back to his bench presses. After a while, Jason had left to spar. Steve finished up himself, then decided to follow. He remembered seeing a fighting area on his way down, so he left the gym and started his search.

Steve didn’t have to search for long, as the platform in question was easily the most crowded. It was the largest, with some thin mats on the floor. Steve wasn’t sure that they would provide much protection.

Thor was standing near the center, holding Mjolnir, and looking quite uncomfortable. He was seemingly being questioned by Damian, Jason, and Cassandra. Tim, Duke, Peter, Nat, Bruce (Banner), Tony, Bruce  (Wayne) and Clint stood to the side. Their faces were a mixture of worry (Nat, Bruce Banner, Tony, and Clint), Amusement, (Tim, Dick and Duke), and confusion (Peter and Bruce Wayne).

Steve walked up to Nat. “What’s going on?” He asked.

“They're questioning the technicalities of being worthy of the hammer,” She said with a frown. “Specifically how many and how often you murder to be excluded.”

Steve frowned right along with her as he turned to the conversation.

“But is there a time frame?” Jason was asking. “Like say you don’t kill for like two weeks, and you’ve been super good? Would that get you points?”

“Uh. . .” The look on Thor’s face was priceless.

“T-t,” Damian said. “What about the technicalities behind the actual murder? Perhaps if a seven year old went on a killing spree? Would age exempt him?”

“I’m not sure a child would-”

“Not their fault?” Cassandra asked. “Forced? Didn’t know?”

Jason frowned. “Yeah, would the kid be declared unworthy if they were forced to kill? Or they didn’t know what they were doing?”

“Well, I-”

“What about mind control? Manipulation? Amnesia?” Jason asked.

“I’m sorry, but -”

“Do the more you kill, the more unworthy you become?” Damian asked, “Or until you hit a certain body count, it's a free-for-all?”

Thor sputtered. “Free-for-all?!”

“Or what if they were really bad people?” Jason asked. “Like other murderers? Pedophiles? Rapists? Drug dealers who sell to kids? If they did something wrong, would that cancel out your own wrongness?”

“These kids are hard-core,” Clint muttered.

“They raise a good point though,” Duke replied.

Tim nodded. “Ten Bucks its Damian who throws dear Thor off the edge.”

“Cass is feisty though.” Dick replied

Duke snorted. “Hah, never bet against Jason!”

All three exchanged handshakes.

“Okay,” Jason said, waving his arms about as he spoke with the utmost seriousness. “Does the way you kill affect how bad it is? Like would slowly and painfully bleeding to death be worse than a bullet to the head? Or say a sniper rifle compared to a handgun? Since one is more personal?”

Thor gaped at the young man.

“ Why kill.” Cassandra asked. “Told? Want? Accident?”

“What if it was to save yourself?” Damian asked. “If it was self-preservation, would that account for anything?”

“What if you were saving someone else?” Jason added. “Either directly, or just making the world a safer place?”

Thor frowned. “I do not speak for Mjolnir, but I assume all murder is murder.” The kids looked disappointed, so Thor continued. “However, if you wish to try to lift it, You have my permission to do so.”

“Naw, it's okay,” Jason said as the kids walked off looking dejected. “Doubt we could anyways, as Thor here just clarified.”

This caused the most uproar out of everything else in the conversation. Thor looked stricken, along with Peter, Bruce Banner, and Tony. Natasha and Clint looked at each other worriedly, Bruce Wayne, Tim, and Duke just rolled their eyes. And Steve was just confused.

“You kill?” Steve asked, as he started to worry if this universe was much more different than he had originally thought.

“Cassandra, Damian, and Jason had … unusual circumstances.” Bruce Wayne said simply. There was a silence after that. Then Bruce continued. “Well, we were about to start some sparring. If you’d like to join us, you are more than welcome to.”

Steve stood straight. He’d been looking forward to seeing them fight. “Sure,” he said as Tim, Dick and Duke exchanged ten dollar bils. “Sounds fun.”

Well I’m at that point where it’s late, I’m tired, and im out of ideas. That’s right motherfuckers its time for a tierlist. I dunno which to do though, so let’s just hit the random button aaaand

ABO: Aside from the fact that it’s based on a flawed study that has been solidly discredited no matter how many right-wing grifters try to sell alpha chad pills, this shit is 100% horny on main all the time and not in a way I find particularly appealing. I can’t say I’ve intentionally read anything tagged with this shit, because seeing it on a taglist actively reviles me.

Soulmate AU: Most of the AU stuff is lumped together elsewhere, but this one has a special place in the colder, more shrivelled bits of my heart. I’ve yet to see this used anywhere other than to justify someone’s OTP in universe and skipping all the, yknow, interesting stuff. Like there’s enough of it out there that I’m sure someone has made an actually good fic out of this. But not for me.

Bang or Die: Save it for the hentai, you horny fucks.

Sex Pollen: I don’t know what this is, but I don’t like the sound of that.

Miscommunication: Do you want to read a 100000 word fanfic based around the absolute worst trope in romantic “comedy”? I sure as fuck don’t!

 Bad tier

Amnesia fic: Jace Beleren is the only character who gets away with this shit, and even then I’m getting pretty sick of it. If I’m interested in reading about a character, I’d rather read about them, not the post-death-of-personality husk that inevitably leads to bad angst.

Arranged Marriage: Another shitty romance trope to force your leads together. Yawn.

Baby fic: When I was younger I ended up seeing Just Go With It in cinemas for stupid reasons and it’s just this and it wasn’t good

Sharing a bed: I’m not sure what this refers to, unless it’s like, being forced to share a bed because shenanigans, hilarity ensues, which doesn’t sound like the best time.

Pregnancy fic: This is not my kink.

Love Triangle: I’ve seen this play out in real life and it’s ugly, and those examples were relatively low-key. Maybe once I read one that turns into a polyamorous throuple I’ll change my mind.

Mutual Pining/Unrequieted Love: Part of the problem with a lot of the media that gets romantic fanfiction is that they never actually bite the bullet with the romance, just tease that shit for years and years. I’m not sure why you’d want more of that for your wish-fulfillment.

Meh tier

Fix-it-Fic: Undoubtedly whoever is writing these have a different definition of “fixed” than I do. My main issue with these, however, is that a lot of them are for things with perfectly fine endings that just didn’t have the ship they wanted or were not a happily ever after. With that in mind, some of them are pretty golden (TLCstuck comes to mind).

Angst/Hurt and Comfort: I graduated from angsty teenager to depressed adult a long time ago.

Bodyswap: Your Name is overrated. (editor’s note, Raderph has never seen Your Name.)

Crackfic: The most hit or miss thing on this entire list. Good crackfics can be absurdist brilliance, bad ones are late 00’s randumb but somehow worse. With that in mind, crack ships can be a lot of fun.

All these generic-ass AUs: Man I gotta probe someone’s mind who’s into this stuff, because it’s never appealed to me. If I’m looking at an AU, I’d much rather it be characters in an actually interesting scenario or world rather than just Starbucks or Hogwarts with the serial numbers filed off. Throw ‘em in Mad Max or something, not Jane Austen. You get the idea.

Huddle for Warmth: As a Perth bloke who’s never experienced snow this is completely unrelatable to me.

Enemies/Friends to Lovers: Look I’m a refined homestuck fan we perfected this shit 10 years ago.

Dark Fic: Another hit or miss one, but unfortunately the majority of them are pizza cutters. All edge, no point.

First Kiss: Romantic awkwardness can be cute, but my cringe threshold is often too low for the high school shenanigans this tends to entail. With that said, I’m writing about fanfiction tropes on my tumblr blog, so maybe the cringe was inside me all along.

Time Loop: This is in meh because I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever stumbled across it in fanfiction but also I can’t imagine it’s done well that often.

 Ok tier

Gen fic: …doesn’t this just mean a fanfic that isn’t a crossover or a shipping fic? That this is separate here implies that it’s notable when a fic isn’t one of those things, which…. is depressingly fair.

Crossover: Lotta bad ones out there. Lotta good ones. If it’s a crossover with two things I really like I’m probably gonna enjoy it, and some- particularly those where it’s basically just an AU with characters from one universe slotted into another- work nicely imo.

Humor: why is this a tag yes I like it when things are funny a lot of people aren’t going to be funny though

Major Character Death: Fuck me up. I wanna cry motherfucker.

Slow Burn: I can’t even justify liking this to be honest. I think it’s a lot like how slice of life anime go, where its just characters you like doing things and slowly developing characterwise and relationshipwise. Which if you like it you like it.

Fluff: Fuck me up. I wanna cry motherfucker. (but of joy)

In vino veritas: This is a pretty dumb trope but I can’t help but enjoy it. Sloppy drunken makeouts into morning after oh god what have I done is extremely unfun in real life but pretty funny when it happens to someone else.

Missing scenes: But what if I want to see what happens when Barry gets his pokemon’s teeth kicked in by Jupiter, huh? This is just wish fulfillment for trivia/minutiae nerds, which unfortunately I am one of.

Fake relationship: Another dumb trope that I cannot defend. It’s a cute dynamic that often really works. don’t judge meeeeee

 Good tier:

Established Relationship: If I want to read about my ship, I want to read about them being in a relationship, which means that if it was already established and we could skip all the BS that’d be great……… is this so hard

Unhappy ending: Fuck me u-okay not doing that a third time. Sometimes you’re sad and you want somewhere to put that sad. With that in mind, the meta-unhappy ending, AKA a great fic that hasn’t been updated in years (I could name a few…dozen) is the worst fanfiction trope and I want it to go away.

Canon Divergence: I find “What if” a lot more interesting that fix-it stuff because the former has variety. It’s really interesting to see events from a story divert and follow different beats, so long as those beats make sense to the overall context.

The thing is...I think that people tend to think that I’m actually much more adventurous than I am. Because I have a variety of ships that are enemy to lover and because I am very outspoken about my firm belief that people should write whatever they want, provided it’s tagged properly, I think people think that means that *I* want to write it. Or that the way I want to write it is inherently in a way that merits an archive warning, as opposed to working canon how I want. I don’t particularly like Major Character Death, though I will use it if necessary, I don’t particularly like non-con (outside of, like, consensual non-consent as a kink, which inherently ISN’T this), and most of the time, when I’ve been tempted to work with something that would qualify as “underaged,” it’s simply because of the time that the literature/media I tend to work with is set in, in the sense that, say, a 16 or 17 year old, at the time of the French Revolution, had different societal expectations than a modern 16 or 17 year old. (Nor were they necessarily ADULTS either; it’s complicated.)

In general, I don’t particularly like dealing with heavy subjects, though. I don’t really trust myself with them, and I don’t like working with them. That’s actually the primary reason why the Áife/Emer one-shot has never been published, because of the inherent heaviness of Áife’s storyline. I don’t really...think it’s something I could treat flippantly. But I also think that I’m not sure I trust myself with treating it at all.

It’s more or less accidental, though I do try to do more F/F stuff because of the scarcity of femslash in fandom. I don’t want the boys to get ALL the fun here. In general, though, I think that male characters, in most media, get the most attention, they get the most characterization, and there are more of them in general, which makes them easier to ship. Female characters....don’t, and even when you do get them, you have to find two with chemistry. It does make things very hard, in the long run and I do think that....as a WLW who writes fic, it can be very easy to fall into the “SOFT ! PURE !” trap, where you kind of condition yourself into thinking that’s the only brand for female characters in a relationship with one another to go down, ignoring that they can have the same type of complex dynamics as male characters. (That, and when it comes to F/F ships....I find that it can be TOO personal, in a sense? It’s much harder for me to remove myself, and I know that, even when I do, people are going to think that it IS a reflection one way or another. I have more in common with, say, Solène, as a character, or Margrid, but it’s much, much easier for me to slip into Lazare’s mind and stay there for a few hours. It’s a nice, cool, dark place.)

Tbh? I’m surprised that there isn’t more pining and French Revolution, but. 

Combining all four in a fic? I call that a regular Friday night when I’m tossing ideas at the wall. I feel like this is half my Peyronan one-shots as it is (Especially Ah, Ça Ira, AKA The Real Love Triangle of 1789 Being Between Ronan, Lazare, and Lazare’s Job). 

8. How many WIPs do you have currently running on AO3? Any you don’t plan on finishing?

4, which is genuinely surprising to me because I FEEL in my soul that there are more. I haven’t given up on any of them. I know that it can FEEL like it because of the way that my updates come, especially since I began my program, but I’m COMMITTED. I was given relatively limited suitcase space when I was moving and there were three books, more than any other non-Celtic Studies books, that I wanted in. One was a book on the army during the French Revolution, one was a book on childhood from the Ancien Régime to the 20th century (which is my main secondary source used in Le Cri), and my book on the opera balls, which is obviously my major secondary source used for Curl of Lip. Pour la Peine will probably take another 3 or 4 chapters to get resolved, maybe 5, but it will be. The ending’s been written out since I began it, it’s just a matter of connecting the plot points from here on out. (The Thing that happened in the last chapter was really the last thing we needed before we slid right into the final act, which is good, because it’s where I’ve wanted to be, but it also means that now my responsibility is to bring it all home. Which certain filmmakers could take to heart. And...there’s at least one more reveal to pull off.) And the last is Brace of Snakes which...I have Plans for. The only thing is just to make sure that everything develops organically. It’s the inherent problem with working with relationship development, really, especially in something like MA that condenses SO MUCH into the span of nine years, so a lot of it is really left up to the imagination.

Hi, I'm new to this fandom. I'm cockles fan. What is tinhat?

Hi Nonnie,

First off, welcome! We are happy to have you in the fandom and also here in the dumpster mansion. I’m sure that there are plenty of fandom glossaries etc. that would be happy to give a history of the term’s origins and how its use has changed etc. but I can just tell you how I use it. The notion of a tinhat comes from the convention/joke that conspiracy theorists wear tinfoil hats (either to communicate with aliens or to keep the government out of their head or something…it probably varies depending on your individual conspiracy theorist). The wearer of a tinfoil hat in media/TV is likely to remind you of this guy:

It’s media shorthand for a mentally unstable conspiracy nut who thinks they have access to truth that regular folks don’t (WAKE UP SHEEPLE!).

So, that’s a tinhatter in general. When used in fandom, it’s It’s a term mostly associated with real person ships (RPS…and when they are made into real person fiction, RPF) because they tend to encourage the kind of “I see the real truth!” attitude a little more than fiction, which is deliberately constructed and can be read for subtext that someone has designed. (I’m sure they get used about people that ship fictional characters too though.)

The way the term is used can vary. If used by the person doing the postulating–which is how I use it–it’s kind of self-depreciating and also serves as a disclaimer: “I know how crazy I sound here so if you want to ignore me I totally understand.” If other people use it about you, it turns into an insult, although that’s maybe not universally true. Personally, I distinguish between being a shipper (or fan) and being a tinhat. When I blog about Jensen making a ridiculously sappy face at Misha (which happens a minimum of once a week) I don’t consider that tinhatting because it involves basically no theorizing. He made a doofy face and I point at it and flail. That’s real person shipping (for me).

Once you start conjecturing about the most probable reason behind face-making or clothes-sharing or whatever, then you are getting into tinhatting. It’s a fine line, because I feel that you can (for example) write meta about body language and not be a tinhatter because you’re saying: “Here’s what I see happening” but not “and from that we conclude that they have a secret love nest on set” or “Misha is the baby daddy.” The edges are fuzzy and, for me, have to do with whether you’re making an argumentative claim. “This looks like outrageous flirting to me” doesn’t meet the tinhat threshold. But a post like mine about JIB 7 and how (I think) they fucked right before the panel 100% does. So when I tag for tinhatting here it means that I feel I have ventured away from the realm of observation and idle speculation into making an argument based on conjecture and deductions that have very little real-world evidence.

Other people may use it differently, especially if they think that all real-person shippers are also tinhats. And not all tinhats are created equal, imo. I can give you my personal take on what this looks like in our fandom, but the fact that it’s my personal take means that it is biased and more sympathetic to Cockles. Within our particular fandom, there are the J2 tinhats and the Cockles tinhats. I would say they are “warring” except that, tbh, I don’t see Cockles people fighting with anyone very often. It’s more like when my aunt’s chihuahua used to bite and snap at her Labrador and the lab would just be all good-natured like “Huh? What is even happening?” as the chihuahua got more pissed off. (Again, that’s how it looks to me.) 

I’ve only accidentally encountered J2 content so I can speak super generally, but J2 tinhats tend to believe that their wives are “beards” enabling them to maintain a secret relationship that’s been going since the start of the show. I’ve seen some stuff suggesting that the pregnancies were somehow “fake” and/or at least didn’t involve actual sex (because no one can see those kids and not know they are related to their daddies, ffs) but I’m going to guess that’s pretty “fringe” behavior even in that group. The J2 tinhats are the ones who send the most hate to the wives. Like, it is vile, vile shit. You can find it pretty easily on any of Danneel and Gen’s social media posts (and often on Jared and Jensen’s too). There’s probably (unfortunately) another subset of people sending hate to the wives too who just wish J2 were single so they could indulge some kind of fantasy about dating them (which–guess what!–you can anyway! it’s a fantasy!). But J2 tinhats definitely do hate on their wives, looking for examples of how much J2 don’t love them and how they are in fact each other’s life partners though not ok with being Out about it for PR reasons.

Oh right, and the craziest J2 tinhat theory I ever saw was that Misha is actually a beard (meard, to be exact) to distract from how much Jensen loves Jared. I am not sure how that helps the J2 case, but at least it means they aren’t blind to those hearteyes Jen and Mish exchange. Honestly, there are probably some very nice J2 shippers who do not hate their wives and who think, like Cockles shippers do, that it can all be one happy non-monogamous party. They probably maintain quiet blogs that squee over hugs and head rubs or whatever. They don’t go on Twitter and scream about stuff. But that means I also don’t know that they are out there and that it feels much more like they’re the exception rather than the norm. I’m also not sure the extent to which J2 believers overlap with Wincest shippers or bronlies…probably a lot? This isn’t my area of expertise though.

The norm for Cockles tinhats, in my (fairly extensive) experience is that everyone believes that everything is done consensually and without angst; they love the wives and assume that, even if they’re not actively involved, they fully sanction (and perhaps even instigated) Misha and Jensen’s relationship. They think that they spend some family vacations together (which was confirmed) and that that means they are kind of raising them together. Essentially, the most extreme tinhatty end of Cockles shipping is still best described as “poly bliss” in which everyone is informed and consenting and full of love. I am not sure I’ve seen anyone pro-Cockles suggesting that Vicki and Danneel are beards, though again it may happen in a small and quieter minority. 

I could go on even longer about why I feel like tinhatting Cockles is less of a reach than tinhatting J2, but essentially it just comes down to the fact that a) Misha and Vicki have a marriage that has included a third serious partner before (in addition to including multiple people in bed) but I’ve never heard anything like that about Jared and b) the suggested scenario where the wives are involved and everyone is happy about it seems like it could actually be emotionally sustainable where what is suggested for J2 doesn’t.

I know that’s a longer answer than maybe you were expecting or wanted, but I have been thinking about tinhatting vs. shipping a lot recently so I thought I’d share those reflections. Again, though, this is my interpretation of the term and my way of using it so YMMV. Either way, welcome to the party!

Milestones to not be forgotten. Giving thanks often through the rough. Ramblings as I hope not to have these last six months be a blur.  I write with a heavy and light heart all at once. It is just past midnight and often my only reprieve for reflection despite the occasional moment while feeding without the distraction of my phone or some other consuming thought like what is for dinner or how to organize the nonexistent pantry.

Babies do grow up fast. I don’t think I am missing the moments but I am also highly distracted and pulled every other direction. Besides trying to keep the house organized and meal plan so we don’t eat burgers and pizza every week – wait we are… I blame covid – working to help Isaac in the best way possible and also remembering to put Waverly on her tummy. At 6 months and 16 days… no rolling yet, but quite close to doing it all on her own.. She can roll to her sides while on her back and sometimes on to her tummy but her arm gets stuck. She has learned to sit without the boppy or blankets supporting her just the days before Halloween. When she is tired she will fall over more, or as I have noticed her face look thinner, she must of grown taller the other day as she was toppling over a lot. Milestones milestones.. I don’t know if I am keeping track, so I am writing this as an addition to all the photos I share. Some words to go a long and hopefully they don’t get lost. She got her first two bottom teeth around 3 and a half months. And today I see the white line of her top left tooth which is why she never let me leave her last night. She doesn’t sleep without me and its been a struggle to accept this reality that I will be getting her to nap three times a day and every night with me and mostly only me. Thankfully she can sleep well in the car and I have mastered the art of running the air in the car just right if I stop at a stop light or even a quick porch pick up for things. I drive around Lacamas Lake often or some other back road. It has been nice to see the colors change compared to the smoke that ensued our air. There are days where the water is glass and I see the reflections of the trees and also the fancy homes overlooking the water.

Scotts been working at home in a small not so small place. His desk was originally going to be a changing table. There has been lots of stuff pushing around from organizing the garage to our room to the living room to the garage again, to our closet, to our dining room, and the garage again.. what a blessing it is to have a garage full of stuff.. is it junk.. am I saving this all for a rainy day… its raining now. Trying to be more minimalistic but its quite difficult. And any toy that catches the kiddos interest I find cheap or free… too many toys. Waverly watches Isaac often. She loves him so much. She giggles when I sing silly songs and when I blow raspberries on her face and when I brush my teeth.

She notices the smallest things like on a toy she finds the tag and promptly puts it in her mouth. Even other thing like a stuffed animal has a heart on it and she can see it and explore it with her fingers. She will do the scratching motion often. She will watch her hands and wave them at herself moving her wrist. She is still moving all her fingers at once but sometimes just her pointer finger. When she is hungry she pats her hand on her leg or something. When she is nursing sometimes she wants to play with my shirt or even other toy which can become distracting as she will end up putting the toy in her mouth instead of playing.

We have resorted to letting her watch some baby Einstein or her brother’s favorite the Grinch (new cartoon version). It allows me to get some things done like making Isaac’s meals or eating a meal myself. I’ve been busy with zoom meetings for Isaacs schools and therapies and I even quit some of his therapies for now because I just can’t keep up.

We quit the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy he was in and the preschools. We tried remote preschool which did not work for Isaac at all and we tried another preschool we paid for but they aren’t designed to support his needs so I was sending my caregiver with him but she isn’t trained as a Para educator so it really wasn’t the best fit. We finally have a good place for him and I hope for the best. I hope it’s not too good to be true and I am also praying that there isn’t another lock down / stay at home. I never thought I would be fighting for inclusion this early. Isaac is going to a gen ed preschool with EOCF and the school district will be sending a teacher or an aid for special needs to support him and possibly other students there.  Isaac will have support of school district physical, speech, and occupation therapy – which I am opting for more email pointers and not more zoom meetings. A zoom meeting with Waverly in the background is chaotic. We are also looking into in home ABA which has led to more zoom meetings but I think it will be helpful to help bring some of the things Isaac was learning home. More often he won’t use the sign or skill that he was doing at therapy at home, but he would at my parents’ house or somewhere else. We are hoping to get his communication more consistent whether it is verbal words or signs or even picture cards.

Isaac seems much happier at school (EOCF) and has been laughing more and has other sounds. I really try and focus to have positive perspectives and to listen to him. We had an ABA zoom meeting and the analyst was asking if Isaac was having a temper tantrum and I honestly never look at his grumblings in that light.. like he was but it was short lived and since his words or minimal I have trained to kinda guess what he would be saying.. and think that maybe if he could say these things he wouldn’t be yelling or grumbling as he was.

I would love to live in a different house with a bigger kitchen and an actual pantry. I have turned our coat closet into a pantry. Found some pantry moths a week or so ago and around the same time our sink backed up when the washer would drain. It was pretty gross and it left us with some piles of dishes. We often joke that we are going to set the kitchen on fire. Counter space gets limited and my oven temp isn’t accurate. My fridge freezes. All this things are first world problems.. It is always interesting to try to battle the perspectives from what I might what or desire or what do I complain about. I was going around the house praying that this place continues to be a blessing despite all its issues. This is a place that gave us some freedom from my parents, which was a needed separation. A blessing of nice neighbors mostly despite the note I got from the “hearthwood gang” (definitely some teen/early collage age girl’s handwriting).

On my walls I put reminders up of having a proper perspective. It is trendy to put up what you’re thankful for on social media during this November. Being thankful shouldn’t just be the month of November.. It should be every day. Daily thanksgiving. Eucharisteo. It is hard in a world where many are entitled and even more so with what media pushes. Thanking God for his gifts is something I am continually taught especially in this strange year..

2020 is a hard year for many. I hate covid and I hate masks. At least less people think I am crazy for having a home birth. This place where I birthed Waverly, in the bathroom of all places and six months later, is it all a blur? Sometimes it feels that way. Other times I could give a moment play by play perhaps even the most cringy first days of learning to feed her and being over tired. My brain soaks things in and I don’t forget things often---except where I put my phone 5 minutes ago. Pursuing clarity of mind between postpartum sleeplessness and pain from birthing and from nursing is quite difficult and then seeing the depth of grief arising that I never expected. To be experiencing the newborn stage with Waverly and to be grieving that I never had that with Isaac – or that I had it for so long in a very different way..

I don’t have the grief others have. I am blessed to have both my babies and I pray for their health and safety often. My mind is the worst and I blame the television shows I watched as a child.

This year has faded down to the holidays and I think it was the most intentional year yet in some ways. I have made it a point to see at least one person a week if not more. Seeing others and having play dates and walks has been vital to staying sane. I am not sure what I would have done without the different friends I have come to know. I miss the ones I rarely see and even the ones I have lost. Seasons of friendships and groups have become a reality with differing perspectives and I struggle to understand sometimes. I know God has a reason in it all and I try to hear him in the leading. I have learned the hard way of not reaching out so perhaps I might do it too much. I try and give space but other times I think that if they are brought to my mind, it is for a reason. I took to the fb Christian mom group and found some good advice that gave peace for my lost friendships – “God brings people into our lives. Some only for a season and a reason. So give her to God and let go. I know it is hard to say bye to friendships but a real friend would respond. So again the season of you and her being friends seems to be over. Something better could be waiting for you but you just need to let go and be able to receive the something better. If your hands are full you cannot receive anything.” “You deserve friends who are just as excited to connect with you as you are with them!” “You should know your worth, you need friends who love you and want YOU for you! It’s hard. But sometimes God closes doors to open up new ones.”

This is also encouraging as God has brought many new friends into my life these past two years. Some friendships I have now are in similar seasons with young kiddos and others with no kiddos and others much older than I am and I am blessed to be learning from all these different women. 

In these last six months I have had many people help us and I am so grateful. Watching Waverly grow is amazing and shocking. There are things she is doing that Isaac didn’t do until last year.. I strive not to compare but it is inevitable especially as I will begin to let her try some foods soon. She stares as me when I eat and copies mouth movements when she sees Scott eat. There has been a time or two where I look for a tube on her belly like something is missing. We have a love hate relationship with Isaac’s tube. It’s a blessing but it is tough. I am glad Isaac eats purees orally and now he can be around other kids eating twice at school and then eventually at home with his sister. I really need a meal plan for us so I can prep and cook dinner quicker and we can all eat together at the table. Right now its rounds where Isaac eats, then I make dinner and eat, and then Scott puts Isaac to bed and then he eats.

No real end to this rambling of thoughts and jotting down of milestones. I soon need to sort through the 50 gigs of photos and videos I have on my phone before I end up needed to pay for more cloud storage. What will it be like for the kiddos to see photos of themselves, so many, almost a daily picture. Well I have written what would be two pictures. Perhaps I will find some photos I like from these last weeks..

Final Fantasy

I love the whole gang here and how they interact with each other! I’d love a story that includes all of them and how much they mean to each other, be it in a poly ship or gen friendship. I’m a massive sucker for trans Gladio but in my heart, none of the gang are straight or cis so y’know.

I’m also down for arranged marriage but actually just friends and in love with other people or breach of promise of marriage - in regards to starting with Luna/Noct - didn’t want to tag these incase i matched with someone who wanted to write end game luna/noct

“We Could Be Dead Tomorrow So Let’s Get Married Today” AND dying in each other’s arms on their wedding night Final Fantasy leans hard-core into those angsty tropes and I got to say I love it. I’m here for “We Could Be Dead Tomorrow So Let’s Get Married Today” being set either during the final battle where they know Noct is going to die or at any other point because these kids have it rough and that way you could either swing a sad he’s dead now or a happy he’s not! Pre-Rumble WrestleMania Card Predictions - Pryde

So. Here we are. The week of WWE’s Royal Rumble 2017 and it is honestly the most unpredictable Royal Rumble in recent memory. This is pretty exciting for me, so I’m going to try to give my predictions for what I expect the card for Wrestlemania XXXIII (33 / Orlando / 2017 / Sunshiny logo) to be AND a few  “arm chair” booking ideas/hopes for the card.

Seeing as Mania will be about 300 hrs long with 2 brands, the standard past-gen bandaid segments, and (fingers crossed) a Kid Rock concert… bear with me. There’s a lot to cover.

Big Show vs Shaq

Shaq’s guest GM spot a long while back was the set up here. I actually enjoyed it and it made Shaq look like he could really bring it. Shaq being a surprise entrant at last year’s Mania in the Andre Battle Royal was a nice addition. Show looks like he’s been getting in great shape and we know he’s hanging up the boots soon. While it hasn’t been announced officially, Big Show has posted on social media about getting ready for the match. I’m interested.

Seth Rollins vs HHH This might be the only match they’ve seemingly held onto. It looked like they were pushing Rollins after Hunter before Rollins was sidelined and (barring any shenanigans) now he’s going to get it. Not sure I care about the match, but if it is a straight up match, it should be fine. However, I expect a stipulation added last minute because that’s what HHH Mania matches do. I wish Rollins would change his finisher.

Andre Battle Royal I’d guess the winner is Kalisto if they don’t put him in the likely Cruiserweight match. Maybe Samoa Joe.

IF Kenny Omega debuts, which I’m doubting personally, all bets are off I’d guess Cena vs Omega for the 3rd time where Cena gets his 2nd win.

Cruiserweight Ladder Match

Unless they need it for US or IC titles, the Ladder makes sense for the CW dudes.

Roman Reigns vs Braun Strowman (No DQ or similar stipulation - US Title or Universal title) I’d guess trickery beats Braun and sets him on the warpath for the aforementioned Greenberg vs Bork match. AJ Styles vs Randy Orton Makes sense. AJ, if not champ, would go against one of the established dudes. Much like with Punk and Rollins before him, AJ can build a match and Orton can pull it off. When he’s on, he’s good.

Charlotte vs Bayley (Raw Women’s Championship) I’d guess this is where Charlotte’s PPV streak ends, but I hope not.

Becky Lynch vs Mickie James (SD Women’s Championship) I’d be bummed to see Alexa take a back seat, but unless they turn Mickie quick, this is the match I’d expect.

Kevin Owens vs Goldberg or Brock Lesnar (Universal Championship) Owens and the UC NEED this match and this win to establish them as legit. They can do Owens vs Jericho with a huge focus afterward. Goldberg is the better choice.

Brock Lesnar or Goldberg vs Strowman This is a big old-school match, but while it SHOULD main event its own PPV, it won’t work if Strowman’s going to win.

Miz vs Tye Dillinger (w/ Daniel Bryan) (IC Championship) Tye Debuting and taking over Daniel’s spot as the hardest working underdog that the crowd eats up with the 10/Yes chants should be super easy and a big win. Miz needs to get the IC title back ASAP. He’s money and great to establish Dillinger as the perfect analog for Bryan, but it has to happen now.

the Meat Life Amazon Fire TV (Second Gen) Review

Amazon’s got a great thing going with the second generation of the Amazon Fire TV.  I will go over specifics following a little background info on my streaming experience so far.

Background

It has been 2 years since I’ve “cut the cord” to my cable TV service.  It was a totally new experience for me and my family.  I have the middle tier internet speed from my cable provider, their advertised speed is 50mbps (off of my router I’ve clocked it consistently around 65mbps).  I bought a Roku 3 to be able to stream my content.  I already had a subscription to Netflix.  I added a sub to Hulu and a sub to the first national live TV streaming cable replacement service in Sling TV.

This suited our viewing needs for the time.  My wife got her shows like Pretty Little Liars when they came on along with shows like Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy the day after the aired.  I got my ESPNs.  But it was flawed.  We had a lot of buffering and loading issues with Sling TV.  And as a Thunder fan, I was missing more than half the games with no Fox Sports channels.

So about 10 months ago when Playstation Vue became available nationwide, we made the switch.  I have a PS3 so we streamed Vue off of that for a while before the app came available on Roku in June.  While I was happy Vue was available, I was disappointed in the low quality of the interface on the Roku app.

When we got my parents the fourth gen Apple TV for Christmas, I became rather jealous.  Our Roku was about to turn two years old and it felt like the interface was ten.  So I began shopping and debating between an Apple TV and the second gen Amazon Fire TV.  Both had the updated UI, both had an app for Vue that was very similar to the Playstation experience.  I just had to decide between the Apple and Amazon ecosystems.

The Apple one almost won.  My wife and I both have iPhones.  I have an extensive library of songs on iTunes.  We are pretty entrenched in the Apple ecosystem.  We don’t really play music off of the TV, and our family computer with all my music is in the living room with some decent speakers.  So I didn’t need the ability to access my music library on our TV.  Our TV is used the way most people use TVs, for shows and movies.  There were four main things that sold me on the Amazon Fire TV.

The User Experience

Both Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV have an updated user experience.  The tvOS on Apple TV is heavily based off of the iOS on iPhones and iPads.  Everything is app-based.  The interface is clean and modern.  The Fire OS on Amazon Fire TV is a shell over the Android OS, and the shell they have over it is beautiful.  The interface is clean and modern just as ATV, but it has viewing recommendations and options built in. It is basically the Netflix menu with Amazon stuff all over the place.

The home menu is intuitive with the recommendations, using your viewing habits to list recommendations alongside what you might have already viewed as well as your most used apps.  While this may be confusing to see shows, movies, and app selections all side-by-side, the main menu does have an apps section.  It also has movie and show viewing recommendations from both Amazon and Netflix.  The Netflix integration is subtle, blending in nicely with the rest of the menu.  It is based on the same line menu used in the Netflix app itself.

I could go over each of the menu sections, but I mainly just use that home menu.  The coolest thing about the user experience though is Alexa.

If you haven’t seen the commercials, Alexa is the voice command feature on Amazon product series like Echo and Fire.  It is highly accurate in its voice recognition and very much integrated into the interface.  With the latest OS update it also has the ability to search through Netflix results as well.  So if you don’t feel like scrolling through, Alexa will search for you and populate the result.

Amazon Prime

The Fire TV is definitely drenched in Amazon product promotion.  Their video catalog of movies and shows, from distributed to original content, is all on full display.  It is also well categorized.  Afraid you might order something on accident that isn’t included in Prime?  Fear not, all the Prime content is clearly marked Prime, and all the paid content will have a price tag listed for rental or purchase before you are able to view.

If you are deciding to get a Fire TV, I HIGHLY recommend getting Amazon Prime.  So.  Much.  Content.  As with Netflix and Hulu, Amazon Prime does have content they distribute (HBO, Nickelodeon, PBS backlog for example) as well as original content (Man in the High Castle, The Grand Tour, etc.).  The way the internet streaming is going, all the non-live content will probably go through these three outlets eventually.   I imagine Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon will become the “Big Three” of TV viewing in the way that NBC, ABC, and CBS used to dominate early television.  That discussion is possibly for a different day though.

There is also a separate app for Amazon Music, which is also included in Prime.  I haven’t delved into that though, since again I don’t normally listen to music on my TV.

Apps Apps Apps

The Fire TV may focus heavily on Amazon’s vast digital product library, but they aren’t slouching on third-party apps.  All the major apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, PS Vue, Sling TV, DirecTV NOW…they are all available for download.  With Alexa it is easy to search for and download them rather quickly.

The main reason I wanted the Fire TV was for the Playstation Vue app.  The app works and is the exact interface on their Playstation consoles, so it has live TV playing in the background while scrolling through menu selections on their main menu screen.  Due to the updated specs on the Fire, it actually outperforms the PS3 app (I would imagine the Fire TV app and the PS4 app would perform similarly, I’ve never had the chance to use the PS4 version of the app).

One thing about Playstation Vue that I actually left out of the review I gave in 9 months ago was that it gives you access to about 50 TV Everywhere apps (the FOX Sports GO app is where I actually watch Thunder games since the local Fox Sports Oklahoma isn’t available on the main Vue app).  The Fire TV has some beautiful TV Everywhere apps.  WatchESPN is great.  The broadcast network apps like ABC or the CW look glorious.  The look and feel of the apps blows most of the Roku apps I used to use out of the water.  If you have personal media on an external network hard drive, VLC Player is a great app to access those files.

It is also very easy to load apps like Kodi onto the Fire TV.  If you don’t know about Kodi, look it up.  If you do know, well, you know.  I’ll leave it at that.

Looking Toward the Future

A lot of companies throw around the term “future proof.”  That is not an accurate term.  But there is a lot to be said about releasing products that are built to last the next five to six years rather than just the next year or two.

That’s one of the things we can’t predict, which way the future is going.  And that’s one of the reasons I decided to leave Roku.  While the Roku 3 that I had functioned adequately, it felt dated even a few months after I bought it.  It still occasionally had loading and buffering times even after I left Sling TV (occurring mostly on the TV Everywhere apps).  And of course my complaint from earlier, the simplistic interface looking like something from 2007 rather than 2017.  I will give Roku some credit though, they are attempting to revamp their OS a bit (although the update was supposed to come last fall, and its arrival has been pushed back several times). 

I get the Roku philosophy, keeping it simple so users can easily dive in.  But there are ways to keep it simple and still look up to date or even futuristic (the way Apple and Amazon have done it).

With the upped internals (Fire TV has got a beefy quad-core processor and 2gb RAM and is ready for the 4K content that isn’t readily available everywhere yet), I haven’t experienced any loading or buffering issues at all.  Video loads quickly and smoothly, never any degraded picture quality or buffering.  Granted, two weeks is a small sample size, but the first week I got the Roku 3 I had some extended loading wait times and buffering. 

With any one of these streaming devices you should be connected to a pretty good high speed internet (15mbps or higher is what I think you should have if you want to stream with little issues, and that’s assuming nothing else is running off your network while you are streaming).  And you should also check to see if your internet provider has a data cap and what it is per month (mine has a 1tb cap, so far the highest usage month I’ve had is 600gb).  Factoring high internet speeds in with the specs on that Fire TV, you won’t have to worry about lagging behind the curve for quite a while.

the Meat Life recommendation: if you are looking for a full-time streaming device, this is legit.  If you aren’t too heavily invested in movies/shows in the Apple/iTunes ecosystem, buy this Fire TV.  If you take my advice to buy the Amazon Fire TV, subscribe to Amazon Prime.  You’ll thank me later.

I’m here for "We Could Be Dead Tomorrow So Let's Get Married Today" being set either during the final battle where they know Noct is going to die or at any other point because these kids have it rough and that way you could either swing a sad he’s dead now or a happy he’s not! Whichever you’re feeling!If you end with death I really want to see all the (remaining) gang grieving together, whether you have them as being in a relationship or are writing Prompto/Noctis

Drunken Marriage Okay I’m picturing less the Vegas style drunken wedding but all of them around the camp fire after a long day, knocking back a few too many before thinking fuck this we’re in love let’s just get married right now.If writing Prompto/Noctis you can have Ignis or Gladio be an officiant for some obscure reason or pair this with poly group act as officiators for each other

Choosing an Engagement Ring You could pair this with having to be kind of subtle because Noct is technically promised/going to be promised, depending on when you set this, to someone else and have some nice angst while looking for the ring

Their Marriage Can Never Be Legal (But That's Okay) Insert Noctis has to marry Luna angst – plot twist Luna lives and the second half of the game doesn’t exist, turns out she’s a lesbian and Noct and her co raise children and are great friends while loving their own partners separately
