Hi~ if you're interested, here's a scenario for you:

While talking with an acquaintance, the conversation drifts into the topic of anime since they learn you've watched quite a few shows already. They ask you for recommendations and, when pressed for specifics, they say something along the lines of "I don't really have a specific preference." (This is, of course, untrue—everyone has their yays and nays, and maybe this person just doesn't know theirs. Since they're just an acquaintance, you probably wouldn't know either.)

So as you look into their gleaming curious eyes:

What will you consider before giving a recommendation(s)?

What show(s) would you recommend?

(Note: this is entirely for funsies so please feel free to opt out or to take your time! ☺)

Damn this is like my worst nightmare come true 😂 It's so hard to give recommandation because it depends on one's personal taste, but also a person's state of mind (if you don't want to watch a drama because you're not in the mood for it, you won't want to watch a show even if it's the greatest drama ever produced), openess to new experiences, and tolerance to bullshit such as 2nd hand embarrassment/fanservice/anime grunts/etc.

I'm basing this a lot on the weeb/ass/shit scale, which grades anime by the amount of anime/japanese culture knowledge needed to enjoy it, the amount of fanservice, and its overall quality. But within each tier, you could probably create subtiers (genre subtier, trope subtier, music subtier, etc,).

To note: a lot of the recs are series I watched recently or remember at the top of my mind, so there's this bias to consider.

Depending on how well I know my acquaintance and their tastes, I would go like this:

entry level. something which is easily accessed and understood by most people with minimal (to none) anime/Japan culture knowledge: most if not all Studio Ghibli movies, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, maybe Inuyasha (because of like cultural osmosis and its impact on the early 2000s anime scene), Raven of the Inner Palace, Akagami no Shirayukihime, slice of life or introspective shows (such as Sousou no Frieren's first cour, Spy x Family)

slightly above entry level. something which needs a bit of trope/cultural knowledge (like the importance of high school student councils or usual HS/romance/love triangle tropes), but could be appreciated even without because of solid writing/animation and minimal (to none) fanservice/2nd hand embarrassment: Mob Psycho 100, Akatsuki no Yona, Noragami, Skip to Loafer, Kimi ni Todoke, Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion to an extent (with warning about the way the plot goes wild and the fanservice and innuendo between teens and adults), Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, Detective Conan

something which requires a good grasp/recognition of tropes as well as willing to engage and think because of the way the anime is tackling and deconstructing tropes: Princess Tutu, RGU (with a lot of content warnings)

classic shonen vibes (aka fanservice galore, tournament arc/powering up tropes, etc): Kimetsu no Yaiba, early Naruto or Bleach

mindfuck but good: Mononoke, NGE (to an extent)

good/entertaining but the fanservice is going to be a MAJOR turn off: Soul Eater, Ranma 1/2, Lupin III movies/OVAs

You might have noticed but most of the series I've listed are relatively short, about 12-24 episodes (except for Inuyasha, SM, FMA, DetCo, and Ranma which are >100 episodes), since I think recommending a long-running series might scare some people away. That (and/or the pretty important amount of fanservice), is also why I didn't include big 'staples' like Naruto, Bleach, YYH, HXH, etc. regardless of my personal enjoyment or taste.

Most of what I like are fantasy/romances (like SAFT, My Happy Marriage, KamiHaji) or niche shows like Cybersix. I wouldn't recommend these to an acquaintance because of how close these series can be to me and how I don't want to put them up for judgement. I can be a bit defensive of my taste ^^

Thank you for the ask! It wasn't an easy exercise, but one I've been unconsciously doing on my own for a while, so it's nice to finally have it in writing if the need ever occurs!

Now that 2 shounen series that I followed for years have ended, it feels kinda weird. And I can't believe that overall, I dislike both endings (but for me, JJK is worse than BNHA, sorry).

Unfortunately i have not finished BNHA or JJK as i dropped both these series rather early on. That is just smt that happens for me with most long running shonen series.

I just lack the attention span and dedication for such massive series.

So unfortunately I cannot answer that question as I have not experienced the ending of either BNHA or JJK and it is highly unlikely that I ever will.

Same goes for the other shows and manga you have listed. I have started most of them (Haikyuu, AOT, FMA, Death Note, Morose Mononokean, Pandora Hearts and Soul Eater to be exact) and did enjoy them a lot while watching/reading but I have not finished a single one of them except for Soul Eater as my attention span basically left halfway through. ADHD is a b!tch like that.

Donten Ni Warau

A 12 episode long anime i watched as a teenager and still hold dear to my heart and genuinely an under appreciated work of art . The ending is nothing spectacular or breath taking but it is SATISFYING and that is the best thing a ending can strive to be.

Mo Dao Zu Shi

I know it is TECHNICALLY a donghua and not an anime but eh. What can I say? I loved the novel and while i personally highly prefer season 1, once again the ending of season 2 is just satisfying and perfectly homosexual despite censorship.

Mob Psycho 100

Anon if you have not yet watched this anime i URGE you to do so. This is one of the VERY FEW anime that managed to keep my attention going for more then one season and it absolutely nailed its ending in one of the most bittersweet ways.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War

Again, one of the VERY few anime that managed to keep my attention span going for more than one season and i honestly blame the glorious english dub for this. (Srsly if there is one anime you should watch dubbed, it’s this one). The ending was not what I had expected when i first got into it but it was just so unbelievably cute i still sometimes go back just to rewatch the ending.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

I mean what did you want me to say? That i hated the ending of one of the most influential Magical Girl anime of all time? That I hated the gorgeously tragic lovestory of Homura and Madoka? Get real. This shit is peak and has been for a decade now and for good reasons.

Buddy Daddies

Again this anims is kinda underappreciated as I think it has one of the most realistic depictions of what it feels like to raise a Toddler and while the ending happens kinda fast in a 0 to 100 kinda fashion it felt earned in an almost paradoxical way. Like all of these characters deserved and got their happy ending and it was adorable

Digimon Adventures 02

As the great german poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said: “What is this Scheiße?” random characters ended up married despite having 0 chemistry throughout the series? Everyone now has kids and just sends them off to the digiworld??? This is like the same sort of mess as the ending of Naruto except Digimon never tortured us with an unwanted Boruto-style Sequel series. Even back as a 10 year old when i watched this series i was massively disappointed by the anime’s last episode.

Sk8 the Infinity

Fuck this. Fuck! This! I LOVED this anime, and I still do but the ending? FUCK THAT! I know this will sound very controversial given Adam has A LOT of fans, but Adam should have gone to jail. That man’s half assed attempt at a “redemption arc” was undeserved. He assaulted several of the main cast, essentially sexually harassed one of the UNDERAGED protagonists and you tell me he got away with ALL OF THAT scot-free? Not to mention the entire story surrounding Adam and that police woman trying to uncover his political corruptness just went???? Fucking??? Nowhere???? If you truly want me to believe this man regrets ANY of the shit he has done then fucking send his ass to jail! Let his political career CRUMBLE! MAKE THIS MENACE TO SOCIET FACE CONSEQUENCES! “Oh b-but he had a terrible childhood 🥺👉👈” I do not care, that does not excuse his actions. I love this abime but thinking about the ending for 0.5 seconds makes me BLOOD BOIL.

I always tell people to watch both.

The original anime's problem is that it took the set up for the manga right up until rush Valley and followed it relatively faithfully. Then it diverged hard but the manga had set up in that half of the story a lot of little things that had massive payout in the second half that just plain never happened in that first anime.

You never actually get told what Hughs figured out before Envy killed him. None of the characters figure out about the nationwide transmutation circle they're just told about it by hohenhiem and Dante. Hohenhiem's entire storyline is pretty much dropped and his character assassinated. The boys never actually get to settle down and stop after that long conga line of traumatic experiences. Overall the ending is less satisfying and the second half doesn't tie up all the loose threads we're left with. I remember watching it as a kid and feeling kind of jilted bc the tone of the ending did not match at all with the tone of the beginning.

But. The beginning of Brotherhood doesn't cover the beginning of the Manga much bc, well, 2003 anime already did that. Nina tucker, a good 5 or 6 episodes in the original is 2 episodes in Brotherhood. Same with Liore, even despite the fact that what happened in Liore actually is one of those little things that ends up being critical later. I think it completely skipped the coal mining town, that guy comes back later with Scar's crew and his multiple episode storyline gets reduced to an evil Ed Chibi in the background while he complains about state alchemists lol

So. In conclusion one must watch both to get the optimal anime experience of Hiromu Arakawa's masterpiece.

Obviously I personally have a hard bias towards Brotherhood bc it is a polished story with a ton of moving parts whereas the latter half of the 2003 anime does rely heavily on tropes that were popular at the time to finish it out and Ive never been the world'sbiggest shounen fan. Granted I'm also not sure I agree with OP either. Both animes have a shitload of flashbacks, ed is extremely ripped for starting out as a 12 year old and EdxWinry is a canon romantic ship. I do agree that the way these elements are woven into the story isn't exactly shonen typical and the way EdxWin is put into the plot feels more natural than a lot of shonen designated girlfriends. Ed and Al also just had a lot of relationships with emotional weight so the existence of a girlfriend might have also felt less egregious when they also have like 12 sets of parents. But that's because Arakawa is a good writer lmao. She already had an enormous ensemble cast, Ed's GF couldn't be just there to be Ed's GF. She needs to pull some weight in the plot!

This may also be one of those things where it's just easier to write a plot around a massive nationwide conspiracy with only one cook in the kitchen rather than a writing team. I do like that Brotherhood maintained what I think was an important message that the 2003 anime botched hard. Dead people are dead. But I also enjoyed the Drama of the 2003 anime with what they made the hommunculi.

Anyway. Read them both. FMA uses most stock shounen tropes but it does so in ways that aren't genre typical.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood breaks so many shounen stereotypes and I'm shook tbh. There're little to no flashbacks. There's no filler episodes. Almost none of the female characters are sexualized. All of the main characters, male and female, dress practically. The male mc doesn't have a six-pack. There isn't a beach/pool episode. The mc, Ed, breaks an entire plethora of mc-specific tropes all on his own. The relationship with the most primary focus isn't romantic, but familial. And there's probably a bunch more I haven't recognized yet.

I'm n 09 fan but you hit the nail on the head with the Ed review tbh. 03 got a lot right, the intensity, the tragedy, color, framing, and Ed's characterization, and I feel like 09s biggest weakness is that Bones didnt see it worth the time to put that buildup and care back in the series. Like there's some assumption you've seen 03 so they didnt need to build those things up again. I cant stand the first arc of 09 because 03 did everything better and the conclusion to 09 is more satisfying when -

-when the early bits hit harder. Feels more earned than just hopeful. I really wish they'd just combined the two to get that really emotional impact alongside the earned happy ending.

thank you, anon, for the back up here. i know this is just one, definitely unpopular, opinion, and i don’t expect people to agree with me, but it is nice when people do. 

i understand why they had to rush it, because then the already long 64 episodes would be around 75-80, and only so much time had passed between the two series that it would be tedious to retread the same material. but when most people now skip the 03 series, they dont know what theyre missing with that intensity and characterization and its really unfortunate. then they hear bad things about 03 and assume theyre true. 

i would agree that fmab is the Technically better (as in, from an actual technical standpoint...its more polished, but that doesn’t mean it’s overall better) but i think 03 is still equal to it in terms of quality and impact, and in many (but not all) areas exceeds it in emotional weight and depth. and as far as the happy ending goes, i agree. the fmab ending (the general climax/resolution: ed beats father, gives up his alchemy, beats truth, and reclaims what he lost and got even more than he started with) is amazing and clever and satisfying. but parts of it while watching, like when he mentions nina, im like...wait really? you’re mentioning nina? i hardly remember her in this series. 

and ed has learned this huge lesson in fmab leading to him beating truth, but in comparison to 03 ed i feel...what did he really learn? fmab ed learned friendship is the real alchemy lol (that’s very reductive i apologize. it is a really good lesson--that we’re simple humans and that’s okay because the bonds we make are worth the weakness--and i love that scene so so much). i feel fmab didnt earn much because in comparison to 03 (and again, i only feel this negativity toward fmab because ive seen 03. the comparison is the real enemy here, because otherwise i wouldn’t have a problem with fmab beyond maybe just not caring for ed because he’s just not my kind of character, but i wouldn’t have much backing to WHY i dont care for him. 03 gives me the specific reasons by having what fmab doesnt.) 

he didnt truly get challenged. 03 ed had all his beliefs, morals, and worldview challenged, while fmab ed was usually just right about everything. the lesson he learned was one he should have learned after he transmuted his mother. it was an obvious lesson “hey youre just a human accept it. one is all and all is one.” while 03 ed learned that lesson long ago. the lessons ed learns are more extensions of accepting that he’s a small human. he learns about what that means. what his impact on the world is. what consequences are. what the value of believing in something is. what it means to lose something. the flaws of equivalent exchange as a philosophy of life. etc. his lessons are far more applicable to real life and honestly, at the risk of sounding pretentious because “blah blah mature story = better” which is something i don’t generally believe (though it is case by case), are more mature. 

i probably went on a tangent, but point is, fmab good, but i do find 03 to be more mature, deeper, and have a more compelling interpretation of edward. and i agree with anon that the rushed beginning of fmab (remember fmab covers what happened over 33 episodes of fma03 in a measly 12!! fma 03 had fillers and anime-original plotlines, sure, but they were good--except for episode 4 i fucking hate that episode. and the tree people episode is a little weird but was important for lust’s character--and all added something. “fillers” arent bad! they’re important for pacing and development!) contribute to why fmab ed as a character falls flat to me (but there’s also a lot more than just the beginning as to why he does).

something about the way dushik just looks at hyejin and says "you've changed a lot, you're a different person" and the scene getting interrupted makes me feel like there's a purposeful imbalance in the dialogue.... we're expecting hyejin to have the chance to say something about the kind of person HE is, whether he's changed or remained the same, but we don't get that. (almost feels like he's narratively refusing to be commented on, when he's the one to have an opinion on everything else) lines of dialogue like that, i think, usually have the context of a check-in, a moment for characters to reminisce or reflect on their current position compared to where they began.

given the characteristic back-and-forth of their interactions, we're left with a similar feeling to what hyejin feels and seems to express in the preview for the next ep: "why are you becoming a stranger?"

but the thing is, they still don't fully know each other. it's weird, because the points of connection they do have are very deeply rooted: the trust they've built from the ground up, their loneliness, the polar bear and penguin—but they don't talk much about those. they remain mostly unsaid but understood.

even some things they don't know about, they have an odd parallel-connection: hyejin being the one to walk away from her college boyfriend, who implicitly rejected her, but SHE took the initiative to dump him. whereas dushik's line about "everyone who's left me, it's my fault that they did." despite not knowing everything about his past, we know that a lot of his family has died, often in unavoidable ways like heart attacks, and he's twisted that around to blame himself for it despite DEFINITELY not having an active role in them "leaving" him.

dushik and hyejin talk a lot to each other. not just talk, communicate and comprehend. most of the time, they recognize when they're acting petty or childish or narrow-minded and they don't gloss it over or hold grudges or overcomplicate. but they're yet to talk about the deepest, most painful and yet most integral parts of themselves and their pasts.*

in other words: sikhye traumadump WHEN

*dushik knows about the shit from hyejins childhood, but an interesting observation i saw is that her dad was the one to tell him that, not her. as viewers we're clued into her past, but within the narrative hyejin herself hasn't opened up about it

dusik + being chosen is something that can be so personal.... like i know the moment where hyejin sits next to him (after pd-nim pulls out a WHOLE CHAIR FOR HER LMFAOOOO) is SO good already but putting it in the context of dusik feeling replacable, like the only reason he was anyone's choice before was just because he was There, and hyejin's instinct being to sit next to him (i could go on about how physically comfortable they are with each other because AAAA it feels so good and natural to watch), share a menu with him... her unconsciously "choosing" him for these little things feels so warm & right. and the reciprocity they have with each other in this ep in particular--the sickness and herniated disc, soup and tea--and in general (relying on each other when they're drunk and vulnerable, showing each other the depths of their kindness but also the bad, petty parts and calling each other out to better themselves) is so... like she doesn't have several years' time of knowing and trusting him like the other townspeople. what they have now isn't reliant on years of familiarity, wherein sometimes a habit to take good things for granted can grow. i just love how they feel like they're on equal footing, both being able to lean on the other, i just love that two deeply lonely people who are coping with it in different ways can look at each other and say hey. i see you. i see your ugly and your petty and your warmth. here's mine. here's how we can both be better for ourselves and everyone else.

the whole THING of hyejin wincing after every sip of the tea but still drinking it all the way and dushik laughing in awe of how bad the porridge is but still eating every last bite...... i can't get over it. them giving each other their sourness and bitterness and the other says, "man, this is awful. i have to finish every last bite, and i'll do it with only token complaints the whole way. i'll thank you, and i won't do it with words." MAN!!!!!!!!!

the way they are when they're alone together and vulnerable + the fact that they eat/drink the porridge & tea alone but the other's presence is so very clearly There in the food & drink. wish i had more coherent thoughts on this but AAAAA

my favorite color is probably red or lilac, but i mostly wear black😩

my fave series is a bit of a tough one, because i honestly have so many, but my absolute faves are probably: community, killing eve, peaky blinders and succession. they all vary widely in themes and overall tones, but yeah......

my favorite cartoon! now that's an easy one - it's shrek! specifically, shrek 2, it pretty much shaped my childhood🥺

yes, i like watching youtube, and i mostly enjoy watching video essays that explain why this movie/game/tv-show is garbage or genius. that, and buzzfeed unsolved are probably the only kind of youtube videos i watch

about music! now, i really like listening to music, and i enjoy doing that while studying but only if i'm writing a paper or taking notes. i absolutely cannot listen to music while i actually study. i also can't listen to music while i read (i can only tolerate movie or game soundtracks, something without words, because then i don't focus too much on the music) and i never listen to music while writing! i can listen to certain songs while i daydream or whatever, but nope, no music while writing, my attention span doesn't allow it

oh, i absolutely prefer studying alone, like i said, my attention span is nearly nonexistent, so silence helps me a lot. also i'm not a really social type of gal😅

favorite anime, now that's a bit tough. i mean, i could say it's snk, but that's the answer everybody expects. i don't actually watch anime that often, but i have a couple of faves that i enjoy a lot. i really like soul eater, although i watched it when i was a 12-old dumbass, but whenever me and my bff are bored, we put on a random episode and have lots of fun with it. i also like bleach, a lot..... although, i also simultaneously hate lots of things about it. but it was extremely fun and engaging in the beginning and that part of bleach will always live in my heart. and, fma is also a forever fave of mine. from the ongoing anime, i enjoy fire force, it's a show me and my brother like a lot, and when it is airing, we watch it religiously every friday. it's not the best anime out of there, but, boy oh boy, it is absolutely hilarious

favorite book, now that's another tough question, i'm going to be honest, i don't often read books that have some kind of plot in it, i enjoy reading books on various subjects like psychiatry, history, forensics.... also, no surprise here, but i also like reading detective stories, although i usually end up being disappointed with them in some way or another. when i think about my favorite book, "song of achilles" pops out in my mind, and yeah, that's a book i enjoyed (and cried) a lot. also i fondly remember reading "ubyr" by nail izmailov, which is a horror book by russian author and it actually managed to scare me, so yeah! it's one of my faves too. omg, i absolutely forgot to mention witcher series which is a fantastic fantasy book series!!!

and, lastly, no..... i don't like having pineapples on pizza. i can eat it, but i don't enjoy it

Hi there! I’ll answer both of your questions under the cut, as this will be a long post.

Do I think the anime was good enough? Well, I have mixed feelings about it, and I’ve been thinking of doing a full post of my thoughts after I’ve watched it all a second time now that it’s complete and easy to marathon. I enjoyed the anime immensely, but I’m not above critiquing things I like, either.

I started reading the Mars Red manga last year, and even now after the anime, I still prefer the manga’s version of events. I haven’t seen the stage play, the original source of material, so I can’t account for how accurately the manga or the anime adapted its events. As I understand it, the anime gained attention just for being an adaptation of a stage play, which doesn’t happen very often. Usually, it’s the other way around. That explains the interesting use of cinematography in the anime, the emphasis on drama and soliloquys and so forth. Some people might find the anime pretentious in that way, but, well, it is what it is, being adapted from theatre. Being an English Literature major, I didn’t mind it, and I also like the occasional artsy series.

Anyway, as a manga reader, I had different expectations going into the anime. The manga is more character-driven, whereas I feel the anime was more plot-driven, and the addition of anime-only characters – as interesting as they are – made the series seem crowded with only 12 episodes to pack everything in. The manga fleshes out the regular cast more (the anime didn't fully touch upon Defrott and Suwa’s pasts, left out Takeuchi’s shock over a revelation, erased parts of Maeda’s personality, left out some fun Code Zero moments, Aoi encountering Code Zero early on, etc.), and it definitely toned down the violence for a more mainstream audience because Shutaro’s manga rescue of Yamagami was far bloodier and terrifying, as Shutaro, agonizingly, begins to realize what he’s capable of and who he may become.

And one example that I still complain about (lol) is that in the manga, Shutaro and Aoi’s relationship is highlighted in the first chapter alone and emphasized in subsequent chapters. It’s clear they care for each other. It’s clear they’re among the main stage players. It’s easier to be emotionally invested in what happens to them by the end.

In the anime, Maeda takes centre stage instead, with the first episode introducing us to his fiancée, Misaki, whom he has never met in-person until she becomes a vampire. From that point onward, their what-if relationship and Maeda’s regret is frequently alluded to, culminating in the final episode.

Typically, whoever you introduce in the first chapter/episode are the characters that you’ll be going on a journey with, so it was a bit jarring for me when I realized Shutaro and Aoi and the rest of Code Zero wouldn’t be introduced until the second episode (well, Aoi did make an appearance, but they had her interact with Maeda more). We never get to see all of the flashbacks of Aoi and Shutaro, never are shown how much Aoi is determined to find Shutaro. We never even get to see Shutaro's “dream visit,” and then that silly vampire (sorry, Shutaro, I still love ya) left visible footprints in her yard after claiming he was a ghost, and she definitely noticed, so she knows something is up. Had if we had received all of that, perhaps the rescue and the finale would’ve been far more emotional for anime-only viewers invested in their relationship.

Instead, there was more feeling for Maeda and Misaki because the anime took care in telling their story. The anime was good in that aspect because they made Maeda and Misaki’s tragic relationship the focus, and so we were able to reach full circle by the end. Meanwhile, with Shutaro and Aoi practically being sidelined, I saw comments from anime-only viewers confused about why they were suddenly a main couple or getting the spotlight in the end. The anime could’ve avoided that confusion by tightening up their storytelling and fleshing out Aoi and Shutaro more as characters.

I also feel the anime focused a lot more on the politics and military, too. There were so many lengthy meeting scenes when it’s more balanced in the manga, I find. Also, just the other day, I was rereading some exchanges between Shutaro and Yamagami, and laughing, and thinking about why the anime didn’t include those because they were funny daily life scenes. There are also anime reviews complaining about the pacing, the random tone changes, and other things that might’ve compelled them to rate the anime higher.

So, do I think the anime is good? I might be biased, but I enjoyed it; it wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was good for what it intended to deliver. Also, I like series based in the Taisho era, so that was a bonus for me. The manga isn’t 100% perfect, either; it might disappoint Maeda fans, for one thing, and it does tell its story quickly (I wish it was longer). I personally prefer the manga over the anime, but I love both.

The way I view Mars Red anime and manga is like this: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) are both favourite series of mine. FMAB is prefered by most people, and is widely considered one of the greatest anime series ever, a modern masterpiece. It adapted the manga completely – only because the manga had finished by then, and I absolutely love the manga. However, it doesn’t mean FMA ’03 is bad in comparison; it just has a different but no less unique storyline that Arakawa also liked. With the manga still running at the time, FMA '03, being as popular as it was, had no choice but to go its own way for completion's sake.

This is the case for me here: I like the Mars Red anime and manga for different reasons. I’d probably recommend the manga first due to my preference for deeper character development. But the anime also tells an interesting version, though it could’ve done with a more streamlined focus. Karakara Kemuri adapted Fujisawa Bun-o’s stage play in her own way, presumably keeping to the general storyline but also adding personal touches of her own (you’ll know if you’ve read any of her works before); Signal M.D. studio handled the anime adaptation with their own team of writers while striving for the theatrical atmosphere of its roots. They accomplish different results.

And now that there’s a game with more information about the characters, the Mars Red universe seems so much bigger in an exciting way.

Now, to your second question:

MAGComi is a monthly manga magazine, and you can read chapters online for free for a limited time. They made chapter 13 available to read while the final chapter 14, newly released, is for premium subscribers. Chapter 12 is still available to view, as well.

Since I can’t read Japanese, I will be excitedly awaiting a translation from Laughing in Quarantine scanlations until I get my officially licensed volumes in English this year and next. Thus, I can only make guesses based on visuals alone while factoring in the anime’s events.

So, in the previous chapter 12, Code Zero encounter Nakajima, as they do in the anime, though the context differs slightly. It’s more menacing, and Maeda is revealed to be inside one of those vampire unit mechanical suits, already a vampire himself, near mindless. Yamagami is enraged. A fight ensues. Then, the Great Kanto Earthquake occurs, as it does in the anime.

In chapter 13, as you can see, the fight continues, dangerously close to shafts of sunlight; the rest seem trapped by the rubble, unable to get to the two in time. Yamagami sees Maeda shed a tear, and they exchange words, and Yamagami seems determined to save Maeda’s humanity. Yamagami then pushes himself and Maeda into the sunlight. They grin at each other, exchanging more words, as they are both swept up into flames, dying together.

Then more incredible stuff happens in the rest of the chapter, as you can see! We’ll have to wait for the scanlation team to provide us more solid answers.

Headcanons about the things the brothers do to make Al feel more human (based off of this post)

Hey guys, if I were to start an 18+ Steven Universe rewatch Discord server, would anyone be interested? The streams would most likely have to be on Sundays or weekdays after 7 pm cst due to my band/ class conflicts. Once marching season winds down, I will have more free time and we could change days. Stream time TBD based on what works with everyone’s schedules.

More information provided under the cut.

Anyone 18+ would be welcome, as long as they are kind to others and abide by the rules of the server (basically common courtesy and housekeeping rules). Those who have never watched SU before would be welcome to join too! We would just need to know so that we can tag spoilers.

The stream would be set up in a way similar to another rewatch group I’m in. I would share my screen and we could live-react/discuss in the #stream-discussion channel. The average stream would be 5 episodes. However, there would be exceptions: I think it would be cool to do the Stevenbomb episodes all together, so some Sundays may have more or less episodes depending on how much we need to get through to get all of the bomb episodes to fall on one day.

This would be my first time setting up something like this, so everyone would have to be patient with me. I have some awesome Discord savvy friends that would help me, but it’s still a learning curve!

Anyway, no pressure to anyone I tagged! I just want to see if there’s any interest. My feelings will not be hurt if there’s no interest; I was planning on rewatching SU myself anyway! 😄

hello beloved anon (whose name may or may not begin with "L"), thank you for the splendid request. I shall provide my answers under a "keep reading" out of courtesy, hopefully it works.

1. first anime you ever watched

Naruto. my brother and I encountered it one day while scrolling channels when I was about 6 or 7 I believe; I was fascinated by how different it was from the cartoons and shows I was used to.

2. first anime crush

I wouldn't really say I've ever had a crush on an anime character, but I'm a big fan of maka from soul eater.

3. favorite anime character

I thought about this a lot while making my fav characters list, and it is probably maka again.

4. least favorite anime character

This one's kinda tough, but I think I'll have to go with the main character from Alien Nine, Yuri Otani. I don't necessarily dislike her in terms of personality but I feel like she spends 70% of the show crying which made her very unpleasant to listen to. Alternatively any weirdly horny character could also go here.

5. list all anime you have ever watched

I have currently seen 211 shows so I shall refrain from making this that long. Though, if anyone is truly curious I do have each one listed and organized by my personal rating in a google doc that I can share.

6. popular anime you didn’t like

Made in Abyss. Really cool concept and decent visuals/music, but I often felt worse after watching an episode than I did before, it almost borders on torture p*rn at times.

Either Cowboy Bebop or FMA Brotherhood usually seem to please people who aren't usually into anime.

The scene in Made in Abyss where one character attempts to amputate the arm of another that has been stabbed by a venomous quill using only a rock and pocket knife. Like 15 straight minutes of a 12 year old screaming and crying in agony.

Houseki no Kuni 100%. I've read through the manga for it and there's so much good content that could be covered.

30. one anime conclusion you would change

I would change up the ending of Carole and Tuesday quite a bit, the scope became too grandiose and ended up feeling pretty lame. Still a good show though, especially the first half.

Top 15 Anime Characters! (Part 2)

Here’s part 2 because I wanted gifs and tumblr only allows ten per post. I want my gifs danggit! But just because there are two parts, doesn’t mean I like the characters in one part over the ones in the other.

11. Spike (Cowboy Bebop)

Jet was close for his backstory but I pick Spike. He has a sort of lanky body that influences his movement which makes for good animation. He’s just a cool dude.

12. Mikasa (Attack on Titan)

I made this list to kind of commemorate AOT final but then I learned that it was split into two parts. Another reason I waited was because I asked myself “Levi or Mikasa? Levi or Mikasa?” and that first part of the final season didn’t help me one lick so I’m going to go with my gut and say Mikasa. At the end of S3 P2, we see the two argue and I was on Mikasa’s side of that argument and I think that she’s probably been the most consistent with decisions because so far she has always won me over on all of her decisions. She’s strong, she’s loyal, and overall a fun character. I like how she’s sentimental about her scarf, I think it’s quirky that she gets headaches all the time (something I can personally relate to) she’s like a female knight and I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff.

13. Uryu (Bleach)

I was actually just starting Bleach when I made my top 15 anime list (I was never going to finish a 300+ episode anime (which I’ve never done that many before) that quickly) but I started it because Michelle Ruff plays Rukia, I wouldn’t put it in my top 15 but it is interesting. Uryu is very interesting too. He’s a character that is deep rooted into the series because he’s a quincy...the last quincy. I have a lot that I could criticize the anime for (including filler) but so far Uryu’s story hasn’t faltered, it’s been pretty straight forward and the most consistent of the bunch, from his ties with his grandfather who was more like a father to him that he lost (something I can relate to) to finding someone who reminds him of his mother so he does everything to protect her but failing because he already used his power to protect others and having to living with that pain and grief. He’s powerful and his fight with Kurotsuchi is one of the moments that I remember most fondly about the anime. At the time of writing this, I haven’t seen past ep100, so I don’t know what happens to all of them yet or if I’ll like one more (maybe Toshiro) but Uryu is a strong character that I’m surprised surpassed my opinion of Rukia. 

14. Hawkeye (FMA)

This is the anime where the sub and dub audiences seem to agree that both versions are very good (more like sub people like the dub, not the other way around) which goes to show that both the 2003 and 2009 series’ have most of the same voices, because they were just that good. Hawkeye was no exception yet isn’t really brought up when talked about. The connection that she builds with Roy is just so good, she’s there through it all, she’s the one to lean on while also keeping him in check and when she needs someone to lean on herself, she has her cute dog, Black Hayate, who she takes in, sure she gives it discipline but she herself is very disciplined and her dog just kind of brings out her soft spot. (She also has Roy when she actually wants to talk about her father though) Get on her bad side and BLAMMO!

 I really liked that show and I really liked her, time passed and my opinion of the show strained but then I saw a clip of it and instantly fell back in love. The thing keeping me from adding her is seeing videos dedicated to talking about what ruined her character and I can instantly understand why anyone would say that despite never watching the video and while that doesn’t reflect my own views, that shows that her character is vulnerable to those sorts of criticisms but I think part of it is really just the hand she was dealt in the story, not necessarily her.

I actually wrote a few different ones for this last entry because I had a hard time deciding but one that my mind kept lingering back towards it was Tsubaki from Your Lie in April.

15. Tsubaki (Your Lie in April)

I really liked the show but I hesitated to put it on my top 15 because my opinions of it have changed but whenever I see a clip, I’m brought back to loving it. If you asked me when the show came out, Tsubaki would be a definite character on this list but as time went on, I started to see criticisms that say her character was ‘wasted’ and the thing is, I don’t even have to ask why they think that, because I think I already know. (This is going to be spoilers because it doesn’t come out correctly if I beat around the bush) Tsubaki is a character that gets dealt the hand of childhood friend that loses out only to be second choice. Throughout she contemplates whether she likes Kousei or somebody else, she’s confused and I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with that or even the fact that Kousei is head over heels for Kaori considering she is who she is and she basically built herself to be exactly who he needed at the time. The two go hand in hand with how each character thinks. The irony is with the ending because of Kaori’s passing, that doesn’t nullify what she represented in Kousei’s life but she wasn’t the only one that resembled something and once that era of Kousei’s life was over, he realized that, that Tsubaki meant more to him than he realized and the same goes for Tsubaki.

I probably shouldn’t have to justify why I like a character but I feel like I should explain so that people can appreciate her more and maybe that popular opinion will start to wane if people look at the story in a new light. Anyways, yeah, Tsubaki is cute. o////o

Yugioh Ep 34 S4: The Boys (and Mai) are Back in Town

OK, back to the writing table! It’s been a while! So I made the mistake of like...scrolling down on the playlist when I realized...

This duel is like 6 episodes long (7 even? It’s a lot) and like...yo I have no idea if we’ll finish this season in 2020! Damn you 2020. Damn you.

But wtv, what I like about this side project of mine is that I don’t have to rush things, and I can really spend the time with each episode and just...enjoy the moment. So often I watch a whole series in like half a week and then it’s like...I don’t get to enjoy it. This series I’ve enjoyed for years now. That’s kinda neat. So...we’re gonna be slow...but lets just enjoy this weird ass anime moment together. 2020 deadlines are all fake anyway. I’m not even sure if 2020 was a real thing that happened or like...an alternate universe opening a door and letting through just so many terrible ghosts. We might never know.

Last we left off, everyone has decided to hallucinate Dartz’ terrible backstory.

Unfortunately we have NO darts in the past. Was really hoping to see at least one darts reference in this entire season, just one darts board on his wall. But alas, we will not have a Season Zero death darts match with Dartz. (Man I need to get back to Season Zero. And FMA. And a lot of things)

I feel like if I watched the original version there would have been some things different. First off...what ocean? Second off...well, we’ll get to that. There’s some things I think were changed for English TV.

Including censoring the nude people like it’s James Cameron’s Avatar.

Fun fact did you know that James Cameron’s Avatar was supposed to be ass naked and that they were supposed to have like 8 cat nipples? Yeah.

Man, that movie was a mistake. I’m so glad we all decided to collectively forget James Cameron’s Avatar.

The actual locations of anything in Atlantis does not match up with it when it’s zoomed out. We have giant cities, we have sprawling wheat fields, and we have...THIS situation. This active volcano next to...pine trees?

I feel like they wanted it to feel vaguely Pompeii, since I know people like to put Atlantis in the Mediterranean. Maybe? Maybe that’s what they were going for here?

One of my top ten favorite Yugioh plot twists ever was finding out this episode that this snake who has no limbs somehow created these...rocks...that all of our main characters have been wearing and obsessing over this entire time.

And so this is my theory, this is the thesis of my Yugioh college paper. These rocks are turds. There’s no way these rocks aren’t turds. There’s no way this snake didn’t poop out a bunch of glowy magic stones and then stuff them into a volcano.

THE ROCKS WERE TURDS THE WHOLE TIME.

Seto spends this entire episode groveling that he isn’t playing cards that will absolutely kill him. Like Mokuba, Seto isn’t happy until he’s cheating death.

(I really wish we got more super past future tech. I love that type of concept art. Instead, we just got a lot of flying boats--the same boat that I think the team flew on in S1 when they went to Seto’s video game universe.

So those boats are 10,000 years old? They existed in the 10,000 year old Pangea, huh?

Anyway, lets take a gander at Princess Zelda circa Ocarina of Time.

SUPER princess Zelda, and I know it’s not 1:1 but damn it feels so much like a late 90′s Princess Zelda outfit to me. Check out that PURPLE. That low poly circlet. The random ass sword. The thick ass belt. 

Also check out this super dead family.

Yo so this is a 00′s thing, a period of time where we liked to tell stories like LOST, with just a bunch of random ass plot twists in flashbacks instead of just...telling a story from start to finish. And can be a great and fun way to do it--but at the sacrifice of actually making me care about these characters while they were still alive.

Like I would have maybe cared about Chris and Ironheart dying if I had known that Dartz was killing his whole family? With...lightning strikes? But alas, these dumbasses decided NOT to tell us they were royal. It’s so strange both from a logical perspective and a storytelling perspective.

Man...missed opportunity, IMO, but I can see why they did it. The wanted the ‘Gotcha!’ I feel ambivalent about it, honestly.

And who am I kidding, people are still doing unpredictable plot twists this. It’s a way to tell a story. Is it the most impactful way? No. It’s...it’s a gotcha!

It’s at this point in the story that things start ramping up, but it’s not clear if it takes place over years or just a couple hours. People just start going a little cray and turning into Monsters.

Straight up, though--did they turn into monsters that already existed and are modern Duel Monster cards, or are the monsters from modern Duel Monsters cards actually descendants of Atlantis who were once human?

They don’t say, actually. Maybe...maybe every card was a human once. That would be a freakin weird Yugioh twist if Kuriboh was like a 45 year old dude.

ROMANCE ON YUGIOH ALERT.

Love it every time. She was there for like...half a second, and Dartz was like throwing so much shade about how “only the people with evil in their hearts were turned” and it’s like...

...dude that’s your wife? OK then. I can see you guys got along real well.

Anyway, so long to the ship of IonaxDartz, you were here for even less than the amount of time that Seto dated Blue Eyes White Dragon in a hallucination, which kind of sets a new record for us.

This might be the shortest-lived ship in all of Yugioh and they have a 12 year old daughter and what I assume was a 12 year marriage for that entire time.

that is if they...HAD the concept of marriage 10,000 years ago on Atlantis Pangea island. Maybe?

I mean they might have not had the concept of dating and marriage yet because he gets over this like immediately. The show will never hover back to that time Dartz watched his own wife turn into a creature. We have no idea if he was like “OK honey lets uh...let just get you a haircut and maybe no one will notice?” We have no idea how long he was desperately trying to remain married to the beast that was no longer human and was also trying to eat everyone else in his court. We just don’t know.

Dartz just had a lot of other things to think about. He’s been King for like...a year...he’s only 21...he’s just doing a bad job at everything.

There’s a lot of vague stuff they didn’t feel like ever writing, because it would have probably been boring to write about. I guess we’ll just let our imagination fill in the rest and ignore all the inconsistencies. It’s a kid’s anime. well........kind of a kid’s anime. A lot of people have died this episode and I don’t even know how to add it to the death count.

How many people live in Atlantis? I dunno.

Are the inhabitants of Atlantis even dead, or are they just turned into Monster cards? I dunno. Clearly the Great Leviathan wasn’t awoken this first battle so...did all those souls get returned? I dunno.

Either way I’m not gonna bother the death count about it because I just do not know if they died, and since it was neither an implied death or an on screen death...I dunno.

Just feels like a bit of a translation snafu--where maybe they couldn’t kill that many people on English TV, so they were like “AND IT’S A DRAW!” but also...it could be canon to both versions. The leviathan didn’t work the first time, maybe no one died? I dunno.

In this shot, PS, Raphael just gently backs up out of this flying plane, and it looked really funny to me. I probs won’t cap it because it’s split between two other cuts, but just...they just kind of moved that sprite to the right really slowly, no animation, it was great.

Dartz decides to end the backstory hallucination, and we get introduced to a new twist--a better twist than that last one, that’s right, all our boys are cards!

Yes, I looked back to earlier episodes this season to see what was going on with Pegasus’ new look. I think what happened is that it’s always been this shade of gray purple--but when you put purple next to it’s opposing color (which is yellow colors) it looks even MORE purple. It’s just how color works. Love color theory. mm. Good stuff. Good purple hair.

I can’t wait until Yami kills Yugi for the 3rd time in one season.

9. Do you like prequels?

I find absolutely nothing wrong with prequels! My philosophy is that, for any universe that can be cleverly and beautifully expanded upon with heart, doing so is a positive effect. The key to this is that it has to be done with inspiration and good intent. Crappy prequels that have nothing to say are bogus. Good prequels that provide a positive contribution? Yeah, sure, totes, go for it. I’d be interested in checking them out.

There’s lots of inherent dangers to writing prequels that mean some of them can be crappy. But I’ll enthusiastically endorse any contribution to media so long as I think it holds merit to its existence in the broader franchise.

10. Characters that deserved worse? >:]

I don’t believe in “deserves worse” for real life humans, so I think about that even less when we’re talking fiction. So long as it’s written well narratively, I’m fine with villains getting away with anything, antiheroes not being reprimanded for questionable actions, etc.

That said. Watching FMA 2003? I fucking wanted Shou Tucker fucking dead 3,000,000,000 episodes ago. WHY DID YOU GUYS KEEP HIM ALIVE!?!?!?! UAHGHGHGHGHGHghghghghghghg. Every time he was on screen, I was seethingly thinking, “I want that motherfucking thing dead, I am so sick of seeing him on screen.”

12. If you could change one ending to a book/show/game/etc, what would you change about it?

Alright! Let’s see. Can we call “The Hidden World” the “ending” of the broad How to Train Your Dragon franchise? I don’t want to change just the end of HTTYD3; I want to change HTTYD3. I would write a movie in which the villain had more apparent impact to the world around him, I would focus on Toothless having leadership problems with the dragons as a whole rather than centering a plot around him and one female, I would write Hiccup interacting with more sense of leadership over the whole tribe instead of hanging out merely with his group of young buds, and I would axe (intentional choice of words) the will-we-won’t-we subplot regarding Hiccstrid and marriage. For starters.

I’m not sure on this one. Maybe Doctor Who. In high school, a bunch of my friends invited me over for a movie night. Well, when I got there, they were cooking a bunch of foods. They decided to watch The Eleventh Hour, and when it came time for the Doctor to try eating a bunch of foods, my friends started eating fish fingers and custard, like some sort of fucking ritual. And I was like, “What the HECK is happening?!?!” My friends had been talking about how great this show was. This was my first exposure to it. Over the next few years, I did get a bit into Doctor Who, and followed it through the first half of college. XD

Also in the junior high, I had multiple friends who talked about Runescape so frequently that, even though I never even saw a SCREENSHOT of the game, I knew so much about it that I was able to follow along and contribute to their convos. Never played Runescape though. 

21b. Which fandoms did you infect your friends with?

I don’t mean to. I hate people coming up to me and saying, “You should watch X!” or “You NEED to watch Y!” I don’t like being judged for my tastes instead of letting me decide my own taste. I have so many things I already want to watch and I don’t want someone else trying to change my priorities around, even if I know they’re just trying to recommend something fun to me. I don’t have time for these things and I don’t want people assuming that I have time for those things. I’ll never get to anything someone says. I don’t like recommendations. Especially after this tumblr blog got big and I got a ton of unsolicited recommendations, it became a pet peeve. So I try hard not to force friends to watch anything. I don’t want to annoy them either with unsolicited recs. I want to be nice. <3 But I guess my natural, unending enthusiasm for things has gotten my friends curious and pulled into the same fandoms I love. XD XD XD Whoops! XD XD XD XD XD One second I’m screaming about a fandom... the next, three of my friends are screaming to me about it, too!

I have seen groups of friends follow me into...... Undertale, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Mass Effect, Deponia, Gravity Falls, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. And I guess also bluegrass. If that can count as a “fandom.”

Animes Watched Since Quarentine Started ~

So I just sat down and realized... I have developed a problem X’D  BUT it could be worse! So I figured I would share for those looking for something new to watch! Also, what have y’all been watching!?

Full list below the line + reviews! * No spoilers, I promise! I wouldn’t do you dirty like that! *  ;-*

1. Kakegurui 

This show took me by surprise, I had no idea gambling could be so thrilling! Plus let us take a moment to appreciate the facial expressions animated in this show! Beautiful, just beautiful. Beware though, this anime gets dark, and sick, and you will definitely forget to breath at times. It is a thorough joy.

2. Steins;Gate

3. Steins;Gate 0

Honestly, Steins;Gate + Stains; Gate 0 is one of the best animes I have EVER seen. Legit. Also, It is one of the best stories of time travel I have ever encountered. The way it is explained in the anime is brilliant! Compelling, thrilling, emotional, so much amazingness. I watched in chronological order instead of season order which I really enjoyed. Also one of the most moving anime endings I have seen. All the characters you will fall in love with, and their character development is one heck of a ride. A must watch, 100%.

4. Fullmetal Alchemist

This was a nostalgia back flash for me! It was been years and I felt like reliving it all over again. Which I am glad I did, cus boy was there a lot of heavy themes and topics I did not pick up on when I was younger! One of the biggest themes was this existential undertone throughout the whole show that explored the ideas of humanity, authority, morality and race.

5. Fullmetal Alchemist Conqueror of Shamballa

A must follow up to the original FMA series. It just ties the whole story up in a pretty bow. I remember when I first saw this movie, it was my first encounter this the idea of multiple dimensions and it just blew my mind. The whole this felt so exciting and surreal, and I loved the addition of our timeline playing a part. Watching FMA + Movie over again leaves me a bit torn on which is better, Brotherhood or first adaptation. I think both should be watched for a full understanding of the lore. The first anime series definitely has some holes and details missing, but it’s also so nostalgic and they really give you a better development of characters and feels than Brotherhood does, as they rush through that to get back to the main plot.... so grab some popcorn and watch both and just enjoy the ride :)

6. Angels of Death

This anime has such a unique premise!! And morally it is just all sorts of twisted, which I love! The music is fantastic in it and all the characters you encounter are very unique and fun... it’s dark though, don’t get me wrong.. and twisted. BUT a fun ride if you are down for that kind of adventure!

7. Another

WHOOOO BUDDY! If you want to go on a journey THIS IS ONE! It’s a mind bending premise and each episode ends in so much suspense. I literally could’ve watched the whole thing in one day. This anime is like a jar of Pringles, once you start you just can’t stop!

8. Death Parade 

This anime gets the prize for the most misleading opening ever! X’D But it is such a BOP Please watch if you can. The anime overall is a joy, its very thought provoking and touches on the darker topics of death and mortality. Who is really good? Who is evil? Where do they seamlessly blend into each other? Besides the premise being so unique and tantalizing, the artwork is breathtaking! The background and environments the characters exist in are gorgeous. As an artist and a writer, I appreciate this anime on so many levels.

9. Sekkou Boys

Oh god, this anime is a joy. Just pure, clean joy T.T The episode are VERY short so you could finish the whole thing in an evening. But if you are an artist, a Renaissance history lover, or a J-pop fan, you will especially appreciate this joy of a creation. Watch it for your soul, you will feel better afterwards.

10. Kokoro Connect

This is a very intriguing coming of age story to say the least. There is an element of fantasy/science fiction that comes into the picture that stirs all sorts of trouble for our dear group of friends. It makes you really reflect your own intra- and interpersonal relationships and how we perceive and interact with one another. Overall a fun trip to go on.

11. Occultic; Nine

HOLD ONTO YOUR HORSES CUS THIS ANIME IS FAST! Omgsh, if you watch in Japanese like I did, get ready to have tired eyes cus the pace and speech of this anime is like nothing I have encountered before, but it is soooo much fun! It is mystery combined with the supernatural. It’s one of those animes where there is a lot of characters involved and some how everyone is connected in some way, like Baccano! if you have seen it. I would say to watch this AFTER you watch Steins;Gate if you have any interests because it is written by the same writers and there is little things that reference back to Steins;Gate which are really fun to pick up on.

12. School-Live!

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this series. It is not the kind of art style I am normally drawn towards but I am soo glad I watched. The characters are all really fun and cute! Especially the puppy!! <3 You deal with psychological stress as well as a nice mix of slice of life all in the midst of a zombie apocalypse! It’s a combination I never knew I wanted in my life, but now I am glad I have it. Don’t let the cute animation style fool you... it gets DARK. I was full out trying not to sob at one point, but I think that just shows how many levels are involved in this story. Have fun with this ride my friends <3

13. My Hero Academia

GUYS ARE YOU FREAKING READY!? This was the story I never knew I needed in my life, but now I don’t know how I lived without it. Dear god, I binged this one so hard I think I forgot to breath for a week. All of the characters are so dynamic and the overall tone of the series is so uplifting and positive. If you are in a depressive slump just turn this one on. I promise you, you will be smiling and feeling better in no time! It is so motivational as well. Humor, action, suspense, thrilling, emotional- I don’t think there is anything they don’t touch on. Uhg gosh, I could prob write a dissertation on all the themes and undertones expressed in this work. I promise you, this is a journey you will not regret taking <3

14. My Hero Academia: Two Heroes

I’ll be honest, I think sometimes series’ movies miss the mark, or just feel lackluster, like a power hour of filler. This one my friends.... DID NOT. I was really glad I watched it too, because I felt as though it added so much to the main story line. Plus you get to see college years All Might... so bonus! X3 But seriously, it is a very fun movie and it gives you more background to the world you wouldn’t otherwise get.

15. Shiki

First off... THE ART. This anime’s art is so unique and fits so well into the overall narrative. But honestly, I feel like this anime is a work of art, it feels like an old folk tale/dark fairy tale you would elders talking about in a pub late at night. The narrative never went where I expected it to, and by the end I was so morally conflicted I didn’t know what to do with myself. It’s a dark fantasy that really explores all the little nitty gritty grey areas that are often passed over in stories. There were definitely a few scenes that made me so uncomfortable I was squirming. Human nature is truly a sight to behold, and this anime shows it to you.

16. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

The Feudal Japan- Post apocalyptic- Steam punk journey you never knew existed! Gosh this anime is amazing. First off the art is breathtaking and many scenes reminded me of Miyazaki. Second, the music is SO GOOD. It’s a concept on the undead that I find to be very unique and truly thrilling. Most of the anime takes place on a train which is such an intriguing element. You also go into human fear of the unknown and how our nature can truly be our biggest hindrance. The characters are great and you get to the point of really rooting for them. Get ready for this feast for your senses!

17. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress Movie: Battle of Unato

After watching the series I felt like my heart was still missing something. Honestly the whole thing felt like it went by too fast. I still wanted more! This movie helped fill the void in my heart. You get to see relationship begin to form between characters as well as more insight into kabane and all their abilities. Standing alone, this movie is a really fun adventure and gives more insight into the state Japan is in overall.
