I like how from the outside, Charles and Edwin are unambiguously equal partners in the Agency, but if you dig into their psyches pretty much at all, you realize that there's a distinct possibility Charles thinks of himself as the Watson to Edwin's Holmes, the friend and follower of the brilliant detective, the guy who brings along a handy weapon - and meanwhile Edwin thinks of himself as the Merlin to Charles's Arthur, advisor and magician of the bravest and noblest of heroes.

sometimes I think about Lancelot saying to Merlin "you're the bravest of us all and he doesn't even know". and then about Arthur saying to Merlin "I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met". so then I think about the fact that Arthur didn't even need to know about Merlin's magic to know how brave he is. and i cry a little.

We like to laugh at Arthur’s reaction whenever Merlin is accused of being a sorcerer because “he couldn’t be a sorcerer, look how clumsy and dumb he is”.
But have we considered the reason he finds it so ludicrous is because he’s actually thinking, “Merlin can’t be a sorcerer. All magic is evil and destructive and Merlin is the embodiment of all that is good and worthy of love.”
I mean, he believes Merlin is the bravest man he’s ever met. A man like that surely couldn’t have magic… right?

Thinking about how Hosea gave Arthur the raven black shire, how Hosea said it was a brute, a bastard, and mean.
But after you've bonded with the horse, you'll find that it's one of the sweetest and bravest horse you've ever had.
In a similar vein, I think about how Hosea said that Arthur was a brute, dumb, and not that intelligent.
But then again, Hosea knows that it's just an act that Arthur puts on, he knows that Arthur has a heart and cares deeply.
In the same way that the shire revealed its true nature with time and care, so did Arthur. Beneath the harsh exterior, Hosea always saw the true goodness in Arthur.

i think frequently about the fact that arthur didn't know about merlin's magic or anything adjacent to that, which meant that he thought merlin was the bravest man he ever met just because of everything he saw of him solely as a person. not as the most powerful sorcerer. not because of everything we as the audience saw him do. JUST AS A FRIEND AND CONFIDANT

merlin convincing morgana to remain in camelot and bonding over magic. uther dies and arthur becomes king and merlin and morgana are eager for arthur to repeal the ban but it never happens. then arthur and gwen are courting and morgana and merlin are a bit upset but are happy for them (sorta) but mainly they’re waiting for the ban to be repealed. it never happens. then gwen and arthur get married and morgana and gwen (+ lancelot) are devastated but hanging on by a thread for the magic ban to be repealed. it never happens. morgana is growing angrier and angrier while merlin is growing more and more reckless. morgana picks fights with arthur while merlin sticks to the shadows and protects arthur from unseen threats like always but he stops putting up much of a fight. he keeps coming back beaten black and blue, bloodied, on the brink of death.
morgana finally snaps at merlin and is like “i’ve been waiting for the ban to be lifted like you promised it would be and nothings changed. i cannot stay in this kingdom and watch the love of my life be happy with my brother while hiding myself away! you can be fine with the lying and hiding but i’m done! i’ll make my own damn happy ending” and storms off to flee camelot. lancelot finds merlin and they talk about it and lancelot is like “honestly, she has a point. i’m in love with gwen and that’ll never change. it pains me to see them so happy even though i wish nothing but the best for them. the only reason i’m still in camelot is you, merlin. if you want to stay, i’ll stay with you. if you want to go, then we’ll go.” merlin unsure and lance goes “it was you and me in the beginning, it can be you and me again” and merlin tears up but is still unsure and lance compromises with “we don’t have to leave forever. just a month or two, a year or five. however long you need.”
merlin finally agrees and lancelot goes to pack while merlin finds gwaine and tells him his plan bc if he doesn’t tell gwaine then the man will hunt him down like a bloodhound. gwaine ofc immediately agrees to go with him and they all pack their things. merlin shuffles into arthur’s chambers and turns in his resignation from his service and arthur starts freaking out like “wait what?? what’s wrong?? what happened??? let me fix it. was it a nobleman? a knight? was it me?? please tell me it wasn’t me. what happened??” and merlin can’t handle it so he just restates that he’s resigning, bows and says it was somewhat of an honor, and then turns and leaves. he finds lance and gwaine in gaius’s chambers with mordred. merlin rolls his eyes but is also kinda grateful for his friends. arthur storms in and finds three of his knights also packed at they’re like “oh shoot we were gonna tell you in the morning but since you’re here, we’re resigning too”
now arthur is faced with three less knights and one less manservant than an hour ago (he has yet to find out about his sister’s fleeing). he questions them again and the room gives merlin and arthur some privacy for merlin to tell arthur that nothing is wrong but that they just need some time away. it probably won’t be permanent but they have to leave. arthur isn’t begging because kings don’t beg but he’s doing a damn good impression and merlin is on the verge of tears again and is begging arthur not to make things harder than it needs to be. arthur grows angrier now and is like “then tell me why. why are you leaving? why are my knights leaving? tell me.” and merlin can’t think of an excuse bc he doesn’t want to push his troubles of unreciprocated love onto arthur so he just stands there and arthur is like “i thought you were one of the bravest men i ever met. turns our you’re nothing more than a coward.” anyways they split on bad terms.
merlin, lancelot, gwaine, and mordred leave camelot and have their own little adventures and run into morgana again and they form their own little band of travelers. arthur, gwen, leon, elyan, and percival are still in camelot with gwen and arthur completely in the dark while the rest of the knights Know. it’s like a few months after merlin and them left and arthur and them are drunk and he brings merlin and them up and asks what happened. the knights are quiet and gwen sits up and asks elyan and her voice is desperate enough that elyan breaks and goes “morgana and lancelot were in love with you” and they all just stare at each other and elyan rushes to fill the silence with stuff like how they wanted gwen to be happy but couldn’t bear watching gwen and arthur be so in love all the time, he explains that morgana left on her own but lancelot followed merlin. arthur asks if merlin was in love with gwen too and the knights shift before percival goes “no, he was in love with you” and leon sighs before explaining the rest.
“morgana and lancelot were in love with gwen while merlin was in love with arthur. morgana left on her own and merlin was influenced by her choice to leave and lancelot and gwaine followed him. mordred followed both morgana and merlin, i’m not sure what he would’ve done had merlin stayed and morgana left. gwaine followed merlin bc he’s in love with him.” he rubs his eye bc he can’t believe the mess things are even though it’s been this way for years “morgana couldn’t stand it. lancelot was loyal to merlin. gwaine was loyal to merlin. mordred was loyal to merlin and morgana. and merlin…merlin has been protecting you for years, arthur. he’s charged into battle against the threats you can’t see, the ones in the shadows. i’ve kept an eye on him since he got here but he’s had it handled. but recently, after your wedding, he grew reckless. he came back from every fight beaten like a pulp. he stopped trying. not to let you die, but to let them get the upper hand over him. he was dancing with death. it wasn’t healthy for any of them. that’s why they left.”
the knights leave arthur and gwen in their chambers to stew in silence, drunk and guilty and missing their friends and wondering how they could’ve missed the signs. merlin and them on the other hand are traveling from town to town, village to village, kingdom to kingdom and protecting villages from raiders, protecting druids from raids, stepping in on executions and freeing sorcerers.

My thoughts on Joker: Folie à Deux
Now that I'm done sobbing and it's been a few hours since I left the cinema with my roommate, I've put the first Joker on for comfort while I write this.
Spoilers below the cut for anyone who hasn't seen it.
We all know that I was one of those "I don't want a sequel" girlies and in a way, I still am. I maintain that Joker didn't need a sequel, it was a perfect standalone. But, surprisingly, I enjoyed this film as it was.
It was very dark, gritty, the things we didn't get to see because they were only implied were things which stuck with me long after leaving the cinema, it was ambitious with Lee but didn't quite go as far as I would have liked with her; she had so much more potential and I thought we were gonna get that when she smashed the shop window to get a small TV with which to see her Joker on with a very sweetly spoken "excuse me" and then walked away without a fuss. It was gorgeously arranged, the songs were perfectly selected and I adore that That's Life played during the start and end; it brought our beloved Arthur to a full circle. And, most importantly, it was faithful to our Arthur. That's what I and so many others were afraid of, that this sequel would butcher our boy, but it didn't. It was faithful to him to the bitter, tragic end.
Joker was gorgeous. He was... so realistic, so raw and real and in pain, he was everything I always wanted this universe's Joker to be. I've always said in my fics and posts that Arthur didn't want to be Joker, it was something which the general public put onto him and he never wanted it, he just wanted to be seen, heard, accepted and loved for who he was, and even when he exposed his pain on national TV, he wasn't given that. He was ignored, spoken for rather than listened to, and then in this new film that carried on happening until yet again he stood up for himself and took what he knew to be right. He's the best advocate for himself and it's a lesson I need to learn from him a bit more than I have done before. But I digress... Joker was so perfect. And his little comedy moments did have me giggling, even through my tears at various points in the film.
I enjoyed the difference between how Joker and Arthur were considered, though we all know that the lawyer's initial defense, as well meaning as it was, was not it. Arthur was never gonna walk out of there without consequences and we all knew it. The constant switches between his delusions as Joker and the way he was stood still in Arkham or the courtroom were so well done, and I liked how murder was used against himself while he was waging between doing what people were telling him to do, and what he wanted to do for himself.
I was begging for Arthur to do the right thing the whole way through the trial, even though I knew what it would mean for him, and in the end he chose himself just like he did in the first film, and it was the bravest thing he could have done. It was utterly devastating, but in the end I think the way he chose to go down was the right way. He could have either continued being Joker and gone down being known for someone he wasn't and someone he had never been, or he could stand up, admit to who he is and display emotional maturity and speak for himself.
He chose the latter and I'm, in a very bittersweet way, grateful. I sobbed through most of the film but in the end, Arthur was himself, and it was so brave and so heartbreaking. This film was, at the end of it all, as true to Arthur as Arthur ended up being to himself (and I think it was because Gary's testimony and tearful "why are you doing this to me?" that was the catalyst behind Arthur making this fateful decision), and it was... it was so hard to watch, very difficult to stomach, but also I am proud of myself for going. I really didn't want to, I didn't, but Arthur would have gone to see us if the situation was reversed, and not going to see this film would have felt like abandonment of our boy... I didn't want to do that. I'm glad I went, but I'll probably take a long time before I'm able to watch it again, if I ever can.
The last scene especially shattered me, but I think that from a narrative point of view, it makes sense. Arthur was a tragedy, through and through. Though, he's an unreliable narrator, so who knows if we saw what we all think we saw? It was the perfect end for Arthur, as horrific, cruel, and brutal as it was, but the inmate was wrong... it wasn't at all what he deserved.
Our Arthur deserved sunshine, cuddles for days, kisses in the rain, dancing, singing, he deserved comedy nights and a dancing partner, he deserved so much more than what he got.
And the irony is that the people complaining that this Joker wasn't the Joker they wanted are literally proving the core message of the film; Arthur isn't Joker. He was never Joker, and that's why he was abandoned by so many in the film; by Lee, by those dressed like Joker, by everyone who wanted him to be someone he wasn't... he was given that title by people who didn't know him, people who didn't want to know him, Gothamites who used him and his crimes to justify and further their own political agenda, and, in the real world, by those complaining that this Joker isn't the Joker they wanted.
Arthur is Arthur Fleck, he's always been Arthur Fleck. He was willing to die to make that point, so in the end he died for himself, and it was so brave and courageous and heartbreaking.
I walked out of the cinema sobbing the hardest I've cried for a long time, but so much more in love with Arthur Fleck than I was before. I just want to tell him how sorry I am, and how loved he is by all of us. That's what he deserves.
❤️💚💙🤍

Did you ever think about the fact that in the same ep where Arthur say ‘I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met’ Arthur realized that Merlin managed the impossible task to be even braver than that ?
Maybe he thought, that’s it. there it’s, you can’t be braver than this. And yet, thousands of years later, Merlin will prove him wrong once more

ok i know that the line “i don’t want you to change, i want you to always be you” is widely beloved and appreciated As It Should Be, but i also just think like. that is quite literally the best thing anyone but especially arthur could’ve said to merlin. like i just think it was so special and important because its such a reassurance. im pretty sure under any other circumstance it would’ve even been euphoric to hear.
bc like. it comes after Years of merlin genuinely believing, and telling gaius “arthur will never really know me because he won’t ever know about my magic.” living with the lonely belief that his best friend would never actually know him. arthur says it right after days of “i would know” and “i thought i knew you” and “im still the same person.” right after “you’ve been lying to me all this time” and “so that was another lie.” it comes even though arthur isn’t even Close to understanding Just How Much merlin has done for him and sacrificed and just how much he’s capable of.
but he says it anyway!! hes like i may not even know half the shit thats been going on in your life but i Have known You. i wasnt wrong. i Do know you. you Are the same person with or without the knowledge of your magic. you have been known by me even if your magic hasn’t. and THATS. LIKE. i mean it makes sense when you think about it because all the trust and admiration that arthur had for merlin (“you’re the only friend i have and i couldn’t bear to lose you” and “i think you, merlin, are the only person i can trust” and ESPECIALLY “i always thought you were the bravest person id ever met”) was for a merlin who arthur didnt know had magic. so yeah it makes sense to arthur but like. IT COULDVE BEEN LIFE ALTERING for merlin.
all those years believing one of the most important people in his life wouldn’t understand him or know him because of this One Thing he couldn’t tell him about. all that worth and identity he put into people Knowing about his magic meaning they Know him and the isolation that mustve caused because No One Could Know. and now someones finally looking him in the eye like!!! look!!! you always been one of the best people ive ever known!!!! and thats not because i know about your magic!!!
idk. i just think it was like. the best thing arthur couldve said to him bye

Sometimes I think, what if BBC Merlin was just Merlin's idea of deforming Arthur's reputation.
When Arthur returns he gets mad. Really mad. For about two minutes, then he's laughing his ass off at the image of himself with donkey ears and "you made them think I didn't know about your magic? You announced you were a sorcerer on like... Your third day or something. How could I NOT have known?" He finds this very amusing.
Bonus:
"remember when i told you: " all this time, when I called you a coward, I never meant any of it. I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met." ... I thought you were running away from using your magic. I had really thought... I really didn't know you had lost it."
Merlin: well, technically, a slug ate it
Arthur: ...
Arthur: why do i even bother.

I want to talk about Arthur's reaction to Merlin being a sorcerer in magic reveal fics.
There are the ones that portray a very violent and cruel Arthur. Fisically injuring Merlin on impulse or trying to supress his magic with cold iron. Almost killing him by accident due to outburst or ignorance for him to feel very guilty afterwards. I get why they do it. The angst and drama. And, while there are very well written fics with these prompts, I don't actually believe Arthur would react that way. No matter how betrayed, angry and hurt he feels.
True, there were occasions where Arthur reacted badly, or really, just two occasions: when Morgause told him the truth about his birth and he almost killed his father, and when Gwen "cheated" on him with Lancelot and banish her. However, in the first scenario he genuinely believed his father had killed his mother just out of selfishness, the mother he never got to meet and blame himself for her death all his life, and then killed thousands, not really out of guilt or revenge which probably was Uther main motive, but out of pure hypocrisy. Honestly, even the most kindhearted and nonviolent person would react that badly! I don't think we can compare learning your best friend lied to you about being a sorcerer for years with that. When it came to Gwen though Arthur was actually merciful. As King he should have had her executed, he couldn't NOT punish her in some way because there were witnesses and he couldn't be look as a weak or unreasonable King. And even as angry as he was, he let her explain herself, he was willing to listen to what she had to say. Looking a little backwards, when Arthur found Gwen kissing Lancelot and went on full rage, he never draw his sword at her and is actually when she put herself between Lancelot and his blade that he stops. The woman he loved betrayed him, made him look like a fool infront an entire council and probably the entire kingdom as well and yet he never once insulted her. The much he did, besides banish her of course, was shaking her by the arms in his anger but it's short lived and he quickly apologised after that, because even after what Gwen did to him he can't bare the though of hurting her.
Then there are the fics were Arthur reacts too nicely to the news. He is understanding, he doesn't even get mad at all. He is fine with Merlin being a sorcerer right away. While these fics tend to be cute and all fluff, they make less sense to me that the first ones I mentioned. Arthur still was raised to hate magic, that doesn't go away just in a minute. Also while he can be a very reasonable man, he is a very resentful one too, at least when it comes to trust. We've seen this through the series, nothing breaks his heart more than someone he cares for betraying his trust. Returning to the previous example, while he let go Gwen unharmed after the infidelity, it took him a long time to actually forgive her. Also, while not being a violent man normally, Arthur can be very hurtful with words when he's upset. He threathened Merlin with banishment when he was still hurt about Gwen and Merlin kept reminding him about her. When Merlin decided not to go with him to the most important battle in his life, he said his famous "I always though you were the bravest man I ever met... I guess I was wrong". He didn't actually mean the words, but he's hurt so he hurts others to appease the pain. Was he being unfair and selfish when he said these things? Yes, he's not perfect, he has flaws but that makes him human.
So, how do I actually believe Arthur would react if he had found out about Merlin's magic before Canmlan? Not so different really. He would have said hurtful things, would demand to be alone, for Merlin to leave (not banishment), but he wouldn't fisically injure Merlin in any way. He also wouldn't arrest him at least there were other witnesses and he had to keep appearences, because he's still king of a kingdom that bans magic. But even then he would late let Merlin explain himself and make sure he has a fair trial, a trial Arthur would definitely arrange in a way Merlin is found innocent, or he would give him a royal pardon, and he would make sure Merlin is not harm while he's in the dungeons. Banishment would be a last resort if the council is firm about Merlin being punish, because laws and mentalities can't be changed in a day after all.
But if there're not other witnesses, Arthur would simply not require his servicies for a while, ignore him for some days, weeks maybe, but not a long time really. Again, he can be a resentful person, but not an unreasonable one, he would eventually call for Merlin and be willing to listen to him. The intesity of his anger and hurt, and how troubled he feels about his believes on magic, would depend on which season the magic reveal happens. But, generally, the actions he would take would be the same. Let's remember that even when he found out about Merlin's magic in Camnlan, after all the betrayals he suffered, when Merlin left him alone with Gaius, he ordered Gaius, not for Merlin to be arrested or to disclose to someone Merlin was a sorcerer, but to have Merlin take a word to Gwen! To his wife! If he really believed Merlin was evil, that he could hurt him, he wouldn't dare to do that. Also, as soon as he learned he needed Merlin to have a chance of survival, he accepted his help, reluctantly yes, but he did let him take him to the sidhe when he could easly refuse and demand Gaius to do it or refuse to do it all together cause going to the sidhe would mean using magic on himself and put faith in a sorcerer. So, no, I don't believe he ever planed on taking Merlin to the dungeons, much less kill him, even then. He just wanted to be left alone for a moment, he needed Merlin to leave because it hurt to see him after the revelation, after the betrayal.
Anyways, those are my thoughts. What do you think?

Title: The reason Arthur wasn’t officially named the crowned prince earlier 👑
Bonus: Tristan De Bois crest was a silver eagle 🦅
Episode: "Excalibur" questions #2
Questions by @tansyuduri
Tagging: @miyriu
Books used for reference: Sword and Sorcery book, Merlin Heroes Guide and Merlin Villains Guide 📕
Question: Why was Arthur not considered crown prince already as the eldest son and only apparent heir?
My answer: That’s a REALLY good question.
Thankfully, I have the answer. 👌
Arthur’s official crowning ceremony was not only to celebrate his coming of age, but to show that should it become necessary; he could rule the kingdom with no need for advisers or guardians.

Arthur had come of age now; should it become necessary, he could rule the kingdom with no need for advisers or guardians.
His coming of age was marked by the ceremony naming him Crown Prince of Camelot.
Question: So apparently throwing down a gauntlet was supposed to be a huge insult?
My answer: Correct.
In the book, it mentions that even Merlin had been with Arthur long enough to know that the knight's code did not allow such a challenge to be ignored.
Book description:
The knight pulled off one black metal gauntlet and flung it to the floor - the knightly way of issuing a challenge to combat.
Merlin had been with Arthur long enough to know that the knight's code did not allow such a challenge to be ignored.
Question: It’s interesting that Sir Owain picked up the gauntlet, because in the legend, he was one of the last to die at the battle of Camlann?
My answer: Unfortunately, Sir Owain didn’t last nearly long to enough to participate in the battle of Camlann, but according to his ‘Hero Rating’ in the Heroes Guide book, he had a weapon prowess of 4 stars (⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️).
The book admits that the deaths of Sir Owain and Sir Pellinor robbed Camelot of two of its bravest defenders.
That’s quite a compliment.
Book description: HERO RATING
Bravery: 大大大
Magical power: 0
Weapon prowess: 大大大大
Selflessness: 大大大
NOBLE KNIGHTS OF CAMELOT: Arthur went to pick it up but Sir Owain took it first, eager to prove himself and face an enemy on behalf of his king.
Even when the Black Knight announced that the fight would be to the death, Owain showed no fear.
Owain bravely and confidently went into the arena.
He dealt a deadly blow to the Black Knight, but the wraith could not be killed by a mortal weapon.
- The magic of the wraith robbed Camelot of two of its bravest defenders.
Question: I find it interesting that Tristan uses his own personal crest and not his family crest?
Geoffrey: “It is the crest of Tristan De Bois.”
Gaius: “And he is the only knight ever to have carried such a crest”.
My answer: It’s certainly possible that was his personal crest, but I personally, don’t think that is what that sentence implies.
They pointedly said Tristan De Bois was the only “knight” (🛡️) to bear the crest.
Which honestly would make s lot of sense given how Ygraine was obviously not a knight and I very much doubt Agravaine (coward 😒) was one either.
Despite the fact, the knights of Medhir lived three centuries before Uther’s reign (so there were in fact knights in the past).
We also know that Camelot’s first knights were formed by Uther himself, when he took the throne.
So the De Bois line (Ygraine’s family) most likely had no knights that bore their family crest before or after Tristan’s death.
Gaius: ‘Uther created the knights to protect this kingdom from those who wished to destroy it.”
Book description:
DEATHLY KNIGHTS: Three centuries before Uther's reign, seven noble knights were seduced by a sorcerer and became a terrible force that swept through the land, bringing death and destruction.
Question: It looks like the symbol on Tristan De Bois’s crest is an eagle?
So Tristan was likely a strong man and military leader, who was sincere and constant in his personality?
My answer:
1. The crest was definitely an eagle. 🦅 A silver eagle on a black background.
2. However, I don’t think it was Tristan’s “personal” crest (I don’t even think they even chose their own crests at all).
More likely, it was the crest of the De Bois family and since they were a noble family, they probably had that crest for many generations of their family tree.
It’s just that none of that family tree happened to be knights and therefore no one ever bore that symbol on a sheild.
Book description: Sir Tristan's crest was a silver eagle on a black background.
