my based professor yesterday was telling us about how she works for the university labor union and how she wants to get a law degree on the university’s dime and then use it to sue them 😭 obsessed with her . side note my on campus job never told me when my scheduled breaks are and i’ve never seen another worker take one

employees dont learn about workers rights from their employers, they learn about them through talking to their disgruntled coworker, who has been taken advantage of by the company for years, and only learned about their rights from hearing the complaints of the workers before them
...anyway talk to your coworkers about wages and paid leave or health and safety and all that working stuff, you learn a lot about your legal rights that your employer really conveniently chooses to never explicilty tell you

Basically, overuse of machine translation is a symptom of a problem, not the problem itself. If my company stopped using machine translation for everything today, would that stop translators being underpaid or force companies to only ever produce good translations? Absolutely not. We would still be paid the same, and probably still be expected to produce the same amount of work at the same rate, but this time without a useful tool to make our work go faster. And if we couldn't keep up to those rates or the quality took a dip because of it (and it would, if only because having to work even faster would introduce more errors), then companies would simply go somewhere else where prices were lower or where they still use machine translation or, worst case scenario, actually not bother using a translator at all and just use machine translation which is what people in that post are scaremongering about in the first place!! As with literally every other industry, capitalism is the problem, but that doesn't get solved by attacking one aspect that, while it can have disadvantages and be used to devalue translators' work, is also an incredibly useful tool when used correctly.

literally insane how much information is gatekept about joining the iatse unions like. I learned this weekend that there is a whole ass position that allows you to work on union projects as a non-union member and I had not come across that info b4. this changes everything

The difference between American bosses’ view of unions and Danish bosses’ is kinda insane. I recently got hired for a new job and during the interview the boss asked if I was part of a union. I said no and she immediately said “You should. It’s not a requirement but we strongly advise all our employees to join a union” So I’m currently looking for a good match. When I went back I asked her which union the other employees were part of so she led me into the break room to ask them and they started sharing their experiences with different unions. Afterwards all I could think was “My American friends would loose their minds”
Mind you, Denmark is one of the few countries where we have no minimum wage because unions control everything so even if you aren’t part of one you still enjoy the wider benefits they’ve created for their members. So employees being part of a union makes very little difference to the employers. In my case they advise being part of a union because the work is somewhat seasonal so I’ll need economic support for two months out of every year. So she was just looking out for me by advising me to join a union.

I still think about the time one of the next city over's anarchist collective who I met at a bi and pansexual meet tried to discourage me from joining my workplace's union because the big unions were too corporate and I should join the IWW. Yes the big unions are companies and therefore corporate but since the idea of joining a union is to protect your rights and your colleagues' rights, the idea of joining a union not connected to my workplace on pure principle seems a fruitless idea.

I hate the US so fucking much you wouldn't believe. The CIA killed my grandfather for trying to organize a union in the british-owned textile factory. To this day they keep my entire continent poor.
