I've been thinking about it for like a year and I've finally figured out a way to do it without breaking my brain (or the bank) and handling overseas postage.

While there are other bonuses in this tier, I've finally figured out how to get around overwhelming postage costs with twice-yearly drops of merch to those who subscribe for 4 consecutive months in the Evan & Vexteria tier within that period.

This is what shipped out to followers in the second half of 2023!

x 2 notebooks (lined) + postcards (with recycled paper envelopes) + vinyl stickers + a signed personalised individual letter. In this first instance, I am also the artist of this merch.

Here's me preparing everything :D

Each merch shipment will be different items and different themes - sometimes fanart, sometimes quotes, or focuses on different stories. The items can individually change too. It might be journals, more varied stickers, other forms of stationary, enamel pins, and more.

What do you get in this tier?

In this tier you get access to everything. All the early access, the merch, you get credits in all future books (which, with publishing hopefully kicking off in 2024 means seeing your name in print a fair bit!), and see any other extras I choose to share.

Why 4 consecutive months to be eligible for that 6 month drop?

To cover overseas shipping costs, which start at $20, and to also cover the raw cost of the merchandise, and also still be able to make an income off Patreon or Ream in this tier.

I like the look of an older merch bundle, can I get that instead?

Only if there's stock left over for that! And you can't get both at the same time, so if I can make a bundle based off past merchandise for you, it will be in lieu of the current bundle.

How is it shipped? How long does it take?

It's all shipped super safely. Before I worked as a writer, I worked as an artist selling fragile traditional art pieces. I've shipped over 500 worldwide. Your merch comes in a water resistant plastic sleeve that is sealed and very durable, and that goes into a thick envelope that has bubble wrap incorporated into it to make sure everything arrives safe and sound, even in inclement weather.

Because I'm shipping from Australia, items can take 2-6 weeks to arrive.

Could you ever send merch more often?

Not at the current price/s of this tier! Many overseas / non-US writers don't actually offer merch drops like this at all, and offer digital items, or only do Print-on-Demand which means nothing can be as personalised as writing you a letter of gratitude and celebration of your awesomeness.

Doing it this way means I can put a personal touch in there, and bundle everything, and know that everything's shipping safely with materials I really trust. :) It also means I can inspect every single item personally to make sure it's up to my standards before it goes to you!

Best of Original Cartoons: Castlevania: Nocturne

Kevin Kolde changed American cartoons on television and streaming forever. And Thursday, September 28, will just be more proof of it. 

You think that’s hyperbole?

When producer Kevin Kolde joined us at Frederator Studios in 2005, he brought along the animation rights to the Konami video game Castlevania, thinking it would make a great direct-to-DVD movie, and that the 30+ years of the franchise’s worldwide success would feed sequels forever. A “universe,” if you will. There certainly wasn’t any broadcast or cable channel that had shown a scintilla of interest in anything other than an animated comedy. Kevin, on the other hand was a dedicated video game player and felt that the video game-to-feature film attempts had been woeful failures. He was absolutely certain felt he could do better. 

Who was I to argue?

It took 10 years after Kevin had recruited Warren Ellis to write the script and “no” after “no” after “absolutely not!” before the good folks at Netflix stepped up and gave a Castlevania series a chance. As a global video platform, Netflix was uniquely suited to reaching across the Earth to the game’s generation of fans. And Kevin’s team building of Warren, voice director Meredith Layne and Powerhouse Animation’s Sam Deats, Adam Deats and Brad Graeber would deliver a winning mini-series (the original movie script broken into four episodes) guaranteed to capture the imagine of fans that had been pining for adult animation that examined more than just the hijinks of a wacky family.

Kevin’s showrunning skills were unparalleled, extremely unusual for a non-writing producer. But all his instincts were perfect, extending to the notion that a franchise universe could be in the cards. Enter Castlevania: Nocture, a new series that, IMHO, is just the beginning.

Back to my original “hyperbole.” Cartoons on television have changed forever. Proof? Arcane, The Guardians of Justice, Beastars, Blood of Zeus...  the list goes on. And none them possible without the success of Castlevania.

Why I love the Spymaster #101: He's the Mona Lisa!

#101: He's the Mona Lisa!

This is it, folks: my 100th entry in the list of reasons I love the Spymaster! [It's coming as #101 because I listed his hair as two separate reasons accidentally. Whoops!]

I talk about the Spymaster's use of classic paintings of modern Western art elsewhere in my list. #61: Playing even more with gender! notes that he substitutes himself in three paintings into the position of women. #79: The Scream! 💔 points out that his use of the painting illustrates his struggles with mental health. #100: His art collection! examines why he turns to famous paintings that are considered classics.

This mini essay looks specifically at why he puts himself in the place of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.

I can think of a few reasons:

The subject is considered to be a great beauty. We know that the Spymaster cares about his looks, being a confirmed fashionista [#68]. He also wishes for a constant audience to reassure him that he's fascinating and wonderful. By sticking himself in the place of a woman who has received compliments and attention for her beauty for centuries, he assumes those compliments and attention for himself.

The subject is mysterious. Recently it has been definitively identified as Lisa Gherardini, wife of Frederick del Giocondo, but, before then, speculation ran rampant about who the mystery woman was. The subject's expression, which gives rise to the term "Mona Lisa smile," meaning an unreadable smile, has also been a subject of debate. With his penchant for enigmas and disguises, the Spymaster probably likes taking the place of the subject and becoming an enduring conundrum too.

The subject is beloved, as is the painting. Presumably de Giocondo commissioned da Vinci to paint Gherardini as a way to demonstrate the esteem and affection he had for his wife. Furthermore, the painting itself is beloved, being arguably the most visited, most popular most parodied, and most well-known artwork worldwide. The Spymaster wishes he were that popular. Plus he wants to be beloved too [by the Doctor].

The painting endures. It has lasted for hundreds of years, despite wars and other political upheaval, theft, restoration, and attempted vandalism. You know -- kind of like the Spymaster.

The painting has been used as a canvas for gender-bending. [H/T @sclfmastery the art historian for bringing this to my attention!] In 1919 Dadaist Marcel Duchamp drew a mustache on a postcard of the painting and called the work L.H.O.O.Q., or She Has a Hot Ass in English. [If you read the letters aloud in French, it sounds the same as Elle a chaud au cul.] In 1954 Surrealist artist Salvador Dali painted Self Portrait as the Mona Lisa, blending his features -- particularly the prominent eyes, fanciful facial hair, and hands -- with those of the subject. [See black and white picture below.] By putting himself as Ra-Ra-Rasputin in the painting, the Spymaster joins a long tradition of shocking, absurdist stunts designed to command the public's the Doctor's attention.

Why is the third winner excluded from winning an Ahgase Tote Bag?

A New World Is Coming To The Sims 4

The Sims Community made a recent post today linked HERE, but I will also sum it up right here for you:

They received a postcard from the sims team announcing a new town called Henford-on-Bagley (pictures at the end of the summary)

The message on the back of the postcard is from the Crumplebottoms!

SOOOOO, what this tells me at least is that the Crumplebottoms are making a come back in the sims 4, so despite the fact that I was planning on making a post about the timeline of the sims games, I will instead be working on a Crumplebottoms lore post!

I don't want to get my hopes up too much with this pack, but people are theorizing either just a country themed pack OR farming? horses? Who knows! Maybe the video on Thursday will give us more information!
