Fmabruary 2025 #5: halcyon

This is probably what approaches the meaning of that word the most closely for them in canon. A short moment in time, after the war, before Hughes' death, when Roy and Riza worked together towards a far away but not totally unattainable goal, and shared occasional moments like these.

I fact, I just realised that maybe once I put colours there, I shouldn't make it a day scene as I was thinking, but a night one 🤔

Joking aside, I was happy to finally try my hand at Scar. He is among my fave characters after all!

I headcanon that a big part of Ishval has mountains, first as arid as the ones depicted there, but maybe further back with some shrub woods and dry grass. And occasional lush places where they used to grow oranges. They built cities in these oasis. And they will build again.

Here's the only painting that is fully finished and thought through for the whole month 😅. I really wanted to push myself there, and I'm still considering things I could have done differently, but ! I'm happy with it. Considering my life these days, you understand why I decided to go back to sketches only 🥲

I'm going to try and finish this FMAbruary challenge but to be able to do so I will restrain myself to sketches.

Two entries have been painted because during winter break I had some time and will, but now I don't 😅 and since I CAN just post sketches, I'll post sketches.

That doesn't mean I won't revisit said sketches to paint them later though ! I am planning on doing just that for some of them already 😁

I didn't have to think long for this, because when I first read that prompt I had JUST finished reading @sassydefendorflower 's FMA/His Dark Materials crossover fic all the ways in which we break the rules, so drawing Roy and Ibi was an evidence ! Perfect pair 🥰 (sorry didn't have time to paint it 🥲)

I think I talked to you about my WW1 AU (sorry I didn't reply I just saw I didn't reply to your last message !!) and I have a small part where kid Roy's shenanigans backfire on him (literally). So here goes, AU kid Roy, and the excerpt that goes with it, because why not?

"Roy! Bloody! Mustang! What the hell do you think you're doing?" The kitchen is a mess. It smells like the inside of a train boiler, and looks like one. Soot covers every surface and bits of coal crack under Aunt Chris' soles. She stands tall above him and the scowl on her face would make grown men cower – in his ten years of age, and the four years he’s been living there, Roy has already seen it happen. But he won't show he's terrified. He presses his lips in a fine line and tries to will the tears of shame and pain away. It only works in part, as his small chin trembles and he feels the overflow drip on his cheeks. But he frowns deeper and doesn't flinch when Chris pulls him by the ear. "You could have blown out the whole building! What the fuck, little imp? What did you do that for?" Aunt Chris rarely swears. In front of him, at least. "The girls are scared to death," she adds, letting go of him and gesturing to the open door behind her, where five or six young women look at him with wide eyes. Some of them have a handkerchief on their nose, one is crying. Roy turns his head. He can't look them in the eye. He didn't want to scare them. He didn't want to make a mess. He didn't want to hurt anyone – thankfully, Aunt Chris hasn't noticed yet the searing burn on his calf.
