tell us more about ren she’s so pretty i need lore

Hello anon!! I am so flattered u want to know more about her! Ren is an alternate universe version of my usual Tav. I’m much better at storytelling visually, so I’ll explain some of my visual choices I’ve made for her character, which contains a bit of the lore I have created thus far. (also thank u for the excuse to just create a character dump post for her lol - i spent way too much time on this)

content warnings: mentions of dissection, scarring one's own face, unhealthy obsessions, stalking, religious trauma... just general fucked up Bhaalist things. + spoilers for BG3

EYES

A keypoint in her design are her eyes; Ren has the same eyes as The Dark Urge's Fiend butler, Sceleritas Fel, reflecting her origin as a creation of Bhaal Himself. Similar to other creations like her and Sceleritas, she was made with the purpose of serving and assisting Bhaal's Chosen.

SCARS

The right side of her face is deliberate scarring of her own doing during her priestess "training". Her body scars, however, are the result of the experimentation performed on her in her early training days. These experiments are often done with the purpose of making unnatural "improvements".

HANDS

I really love how Scarlet Witch's fingertips will stain black as a result of her use of the Darkhold's chaos magic spells, so I took that inspiration and headcannon that Ren's hands/arms do something similar from her "training" as a priestess of Bhaal and her use of necromancy/shadow magic and rituals.

For her general aesthetic, I was mainly inspired by the concept art for Bhaal for BG3 and this art of a priestess of Bhaal. She often wears a large dusty cloak over her usual gown. Placed on the top of her cloak, she will also sometimes wear a crown of thorns, mimicking the "spiky" style of common Bhaalist attire. During their time in the temple, before the events of BG3, she often adorned her face with a broken piece of a human skull. Since her coat is quite heavy, she walks a little hunched over… kind of like a creepy gremlin. Additionally, she will wear a small Bhaalist charm at the collar of her cloak.

Underneath, she wears her typical black gown; the top half resembles Orin’s carapace and blends into her skirt, with leg slits for better mobility, of course! When she isn’t wearing her cloak, her hair is loosely tied back and styled into a collection of braids, accessorized with Bhaalist jewelry.

*Keep in mind I am not a lore expert in terms of D&D deities or Bhaalist lore in general. I took some stuff from the forgotten realms wiki but also just made some stuff up lol, so this NOT D&D or BG3 lore accurate.

Also, again, warnings for unhealthy relationships/obsessions, as well as brief mentions of torture but not in detail.

THEY ARE BHAALISTS THEY HAVE ISSUES!!!!

Similarly to Sceleritas Fel, Ren has a lot of "care" for The Dark Urge. She favours him over Orin, and often clashed heads with her... but of course I have to have some doomed yuri content too!!!!!! so maybe they kissed once or twice >:) (but waaay before the events of BG3) Her "training" as a priestess of Bhaal consisted of torture, religious indoctrination, and extreme mental corruption/manipulation, especially by Orin. As implied before, she faced experiments in order to "improve" her usefulness to Bhaal and His Chosen. As a result, she is not the most stable person you'll meet. She is mainly chaotic evil aligned, however, her final loyalties will always lie with The Dark Urge, and she is accepting of his resistance/redemption path, as well as his acceptance/murder hobo path. She is essentially a certified Real One (also doesn't rlly vibe with Bhaal after he kills her evil Dragon boyfriend yk). The tadpole in someway also helped "release" her mind of Bhaal's influence, and while she is still an obsessive and violent girlie, she can be persuaded to not be a total murder hobo and sometimes even decides on her own to go against Bhaal's wishes (she still cool with murder though). As I previously mentioned, Ren was created by Bhaal to assist His Chosen in his duties and leading the temple, as most priestesses/priests of Bhaal do. She is more of a companion and advisor to The Dark Urge, rather than a servant like Sceleritas Fel. She is deeply (obsessed) "in-love" with The Dark Urge, and supports him over Orin. A while before the whole tadpoles, absolute, blah blah blah stuff, her and Orin had a brief history, but it was moreso Orin's jealousy of what Durge had. Her in-game class is a Bhaalist class mod! It is very fun so far, and she just levelled up to level 3 and can now has the ability Verminous Metamorphosis, so she can turn into a… RAAAAT!! 🐀 sorry, Astarion :( However, I see her as a combo of this and a death cleric of Bhaal. In terms of how her story is going in the BG3 campaign, i still haven't fully fleshed anything out yet! I would assume she would have a large impact on Durge's memory loss. Maybe she will have her own gaps in memory, but knows they have a reason to go to Baldur's Gate. As for other durge events, I believe she would be proud of The Dark Urge for such a "beautiful display of gore!" after Alfira night lol. I'm still undecided if I want to do redemption or murder hobo durge... I don't want to kill Isobel so I'm probably going to headcannon that Bhaal tasks The Dark Urge with killing her, as a way to test if he is "losing his way", or if he cares more about the life of a "mere servant of Bhaal" than his own "birthright" as Bhaal's Chosen.

For now I am just going with the flow of the game and doing some fun photo and gif series of Ren and Durge's adventure in my Durgetav playthrough!

❃How EXO acts around their crush❃

a/n: This is 10000% just for my own pleasure. I may have had this in my drafts for weeks... I am totally okay with all the Kyungsoo solo content and EXO ladder dropping. Totally. Super functional, delusional who?

ALSO to any EXO-L that are sharing Chen's LEAKED wedding photos. Please be respectful and either delete them or, at the very least, blur out his wife's face. Chen has gone to great lengths to safeguard her privacy, as she is not famous nor wants to be in the spotlight. Not to mention that there could be crazy sasaengs out there with ill intent. Sharing her info is basically doxing, and it is insane to me how many people shared these posts without much thought. Anyway, I needed to share my frustrations.

Xiumin/Minseok:

✾ He is a lot shyer than the other members; where most of EXO probably feels comfortable enough to act on their crushes, he is a bit more reserved. He wants to test the waters first, ascertaining whether the feeling is mutual. Whenever you are around and are talking to other people, he sits back silently, observing your reactions.

✾ Xiumin is smiling so widely around you that the other members worry that his muscles might start cramping up soon. The moment he sees you, his bubbly personality starts to really shine through, and sometimes you can't help but wonder whether this man truly is 33.

✾ That being said, from the moment that anyone offers Xiumin a couple of drinks, his confidence spikes, and he will start flirting with you. His flirting is still extremely sweet and cute; Xiumin can be incredibly charming when he wants to be.

Suho/Junmyeon

✾ He is such a gentleman around you, trying to make you feel at ease with his kind gestures. Whether it is him pulling back a chair or opening a door for you, he will do anything to make you feel like a princess.

✾ Being one of EXO's proud black card owners, he will casually buy you whatever you need. He keeps repeating that he wants to treat his friends when you try to interject. You can't completely refute it; he does spend a lot of money on the members. Yet, you can't help but feel like his gifts are slightly too expensive and excessive for 'just friends'.

✾ So. Many. Soft. Glances. Suho looks at you like you hung the moon and the stars; you catch him staring at you almost every time you look over. Conversations with him can, therefore, be a tad awkward. He doesn't always register what you are saying; he is so absorbed in watching you that he forgets to listen.

✾ The other members relentlessly tease him for it. If you don't catch on based on Suho's actions, you will definitely catch on due to his members' relentless teasing. Whenever he does anything remotely romantic around you, their faces light up like Christmas came early. The members are not subtle about it whatsoever, thoroughly enjoying putting their leader in a slightly uncomfortable position.

Baekhyun:

✾ The members didn't think it was possible, but Baekhyun somehow became louder. It is as if he wants to draw your attention simply by screaming, as he no longer has any volume control when you are around. Everyone can hear your conversation from across the room, and his laughter becomes borderline obnoxious as it overpowers any other sound.

✾ He is such a tease and a suggestive one at that. Considering he has no problem revealing intimate, not suitable to be aired on national TV, details about the members' bodies, he won't have any trouble suggestively flirting with you. Where Xiumin's pick-up lines are cute, Baekhyun's are far from it. Give this man some holy water, Jesus.

✾ He is so intense with his flirting that it sometimes crosses the line of sexy to parody, coming off as a joke. Baekyhyun has a very flirty personality and isn't above flirting with his friends. Even though he isn't subtle about his crush, he can accidentally fall into the "he flirts with everyone" category, making you question whether he genuinely likes you or is just being friendly.

✾ He really enjoys the chase when it comes to relationships. Thus, it will take him quite some time before he asks you out, simply because he likes the push-and-pull game.

Chanyeol

✾ There is nothing subtle about Mr. Park Chanyeol. The moment he sees someone he wants to date, he is going for it full steam ahead. Puppy Chanyeol is momentarily retired as he makes his way over to you; Chanyeol knows that he is handsome and sexy, and he is ready to show it to you. I hope you weren't interested in anyone else because the moment you return any of his interest, he will be flirting with you like there is no tomorrow.

✾ Internally, he is so excited to be talking to you, and sometimes, you will see glimpses of his cute puppy-like persona, especially once he feels like you are just as interested. Still, the words coming out of this man's mouth, Jesus part two. Please go and ask Baekyhun to pass the holy water.

✾ That being said, he will get embarrassed when the other members are around or slightly bashful when you return his flirting at full force. I don't think Chanyeol is used to anyone sharing his level of intensity, so once you do, he gets a bit flustered. He absolutely loves it, though. Your compliments got him grinning from ear to ear.

D.O./Kyungsoo

✾ Don't get me wrong, I adore this man to a delusional extent, but he is absolutely hopeless when it comes to communicating with his crush. He won't go anywhere near you if he can't help it; he prefers looking at you from afar. He is someone who favours being approached first over approaching you himself. It isn't that he doesn't want to talk to you; he simply isn't the type of person to initiate contact with his crush and tends to stay back when he can tell that someone else is interested, too. 

✾ Even if he finds himself near you, don't expect him to have a full-blown conversation with you. He already tends to be a man of little words, but when it comes to you, he is a man of not a single word. Being around you is enough to make him happy; he doesn't really need to have a deep conversation. 

✾ Nevertheless, his actions make more than up for it. He is such a gentleman, being the definition of preferential treatment. You don't have a chair to sit on? He will quietly offer you his. Your sweater got caught on something? He will silently help you get it out. Although he may not say much to you, he communicates his feelings through his actions. 

Kai/Jongin

✾ If you think Xiumin or Kyungsoo are shy, you have not yet met Kai with a crush. He turns into absolute mush the moment he sees you, giggling and blushing whenever you do as much as breathing. You can't even see him because he has resorted to hiding behind the other members, preferably Sehun or Chanyeol, as they are tall enough to obscure him completely.

✾ If he somehow musters up the courage to talk to you, good luck having it go anywhere because he can barely make it through a sentence without giggling. It is obvious to everyone around him that he is smitten with you; his laughs are awkwardly loud, and his eyes are literally shooting hearts.

✾ The moment he manages to ask you to dance, his shy demeanour completely changes. His movement… His expressions… The way he is smirking at you… Maybe you should go and ask Chanyeol whether there is anything left of the holy water he borrowed from Baekyhun.

Sehun

✾ He has one of two ways of acting around his crush: either he acts super bratty or becomes painfully shy. It depends on whether he has met and talked to you before. But, if you are complete strangers, he would be so quiet, hiding in the furthest corner he can find.

✾ He will pester the members to go over and collect as much information as they can about you. They will do it because he will whine the entire night about it if they don't and, repeat with me, what Sehun wants, Sehun gets. The members try to convince Sehun to go talk to you himself, but Sehun stubbornly refuses. Bro will be playing the Maknae card harder than he ever has in his entire life.

✾ In the end, he will drag Suho with him, trying to 'casually' strike up a conversation with you. The small talk is painful, and in all honesty, Suho, with his dad jokes, isn't helping in the slightest. At the very least, it provides the two of you with a new conversational topic: the teasing of Suho.

He’s gonna think you’re sooo cute lmaoo

He’ll tell you that too but only once or twice - he doesn't want it to get to your head

Chances are you’re probably wearing his clothes and string bean here long as fuck so it’s likely too big for you in certain ways

But he really likes the look of you in one of his shirts and his jackets (You look ridiculous in his pants because of just how ill-fitted they are on you but that’s beside the point)

The only thing that really throws him off is seeing the staples and skin graft scars on you

It’s a crude emulation of his actual skin grafts made from makeup and face paint, but it served as a weird and startling reminder of just how fragile you compared to him

The pain he suffered as a result of his own flames was hard enough but the idea of going through the same pain and process as him? No thanks 

So in the end, he’s gonna think you look cute and will definitely let you borrow one of his jackets anytime you ask because he likes how you look in them

But don’t show him what you’d look like when you’re hurt okay? 

Because who knows what he’d do if he saw you hurt like that for real

Katsuki Bakugo

Even since his debut, Halloween costumes of his hero costume have been pretty hard to come by

So you were pretty lucky to be able to snag a more feminine-looking costume a couple of years after his debut

It wasn’t the greatest material and there were definitely some details that they just didn’t get right (And you know he’d have something to say about the costume creators once he finds out later)

But seeing his face when you showed him the costume was more than enough for you to be satisfied

So naturally, he’s going to be super cocky and like grinning ear to ear like a complete dumbass

Like seeing his SO dress up exactly like him in a cuter version of his costume is really gonna make him happy because that ego is still a little unchecked

But he’s also gonna feel extremely proud

He knew of the existence of the halloween costumes and he knew he had fans

But something about seeing the person he loves most dressing up like him in a show of admiration and affection is probably gonna make him feel all soft and squishy and sweet on the inside

Not that he’d ever admit that though

Spike Spiegel

At first, he’s gonna be mad because the outfit absolutely reminds him of Andy

But then you hit in with the

“I’m a cowboy Spike! I’m just like you!”

And he’s gonna fucking melt

Suddenly all negative feelings he has about cowboys are being washed away by the image of you looking like you walked fresh off the set of Big Shots

Because he’s him, he gonna mess around with your hat and make you pose and say certain things from old western movies with a drawl

He might even sneak a couple of photos here and there (or he’s gonna be completely shameless about it and take candid photos of you looking cute right in front of your face)

And eventually, he’ll probably hit you with his signature snark and tell you that he doesn’t dress anything like that

But he won’t be quick to ruin your fun though - he’s got a lot more compliments to shower you with

Ranking Every Miraculous Ship

I remind everyone that these are simply my own opinions. If you don't like it, then that is your choice. These are simply the ships that I like and don't like.

OTP/One True Pairing: Luka/Adrien- I love these two as a ship so much! Luka's calm and relaxed personality would totally balance Adrien's organized, stressed, and chaotic personality that he has from being Gabriel's son and Cat Noir. Plus, I feel that Luka would help give Adrien the confidence to stand up to Gabriel while Adrien would be the shoulder that Luka would need so that he did not need to be everyone's therapist.

Nathaniel/Marc- They're adorable in so many ways! When Marc was dragging Nathaniel to the stadium in the Penalteam episode has to be one of the cutest things I have ever seen on the show. It's also really cute how the two of them fit together so well. They are both so shy but opened up once they discovered all they had in common. They would be the power couple of comics! An artist and a writer is such a cute artistic pair!

Juleka/Rose- Another really adorable pair! The two obviously care a lot about each other. Especially with how Juleka was one of the few people who knew about Rose's secret illness. Plus, Rose was also really sweet about wanting to help Juleka overcome her photo curse back in the Reflekta episode. Plus, they show that two people who look so different can still get along great. Rose is all pink and cheery while Juleka is goth and shy. They are literal opposites, yet get along like peanut butter and jelly.

Jagged/Penny- They went through their own journey as characters and people. Jagged first comes across as an arrogant celebrity with Penny as his "yes, sir" assistant. But, then we see how the two of them really do have a special bond. They care about each other a lot. Plus, when Penny was understandably stressed from work during the Troublemaker, Jagged grew to understand her more. They have more than just a "boss and employee" relationship. Penny is also an adorable second mother figure to Luka and Jagged.

Tikki/Plagg- First, I love their nicknames for each other! Tikki is "Sugarcube" and Plagg is "Stinky Sock." While they do sometimes appear like siblings, they also sometimes act like an old married couple. Plagg gives me vibes of being the cheerful and fun side of the relationship with Tikki being the responsible "voice of reason" side. They balance each other in every sense, which really makes them even better for each other.

Love: Adrien/Kagami- These two have so much in common. From their love of fencing to their desire to step away from the forceful hands of their parents. The two brought out a lot of good things about each other. Kagami helping Adrien realize how awful his dad's treatment of him was and Adrien helping Kagami embrace her artistic side even when her mother doesn't approve of it.

Alya/Nino- Probably the least problematic couple on the show. Once they spent time together while locked in a cage during the Animan episode, they found out how much they had in common and how good they would be together. Nino might have had his moment of jealousy when he thought Cat Noir was flirting with her, but both have had plenty of moments where they showed how much they cared about each other. During the start of the Scarlet Moth attack when both were promising to take the other to the movies once everything was over, it was adorable.

Luka/Kagami- Another pair that would be all about balance while also sharing a lot in common. Both of them have such calm personalities. They would definitely be one of those couples that could happily sit together quietly for hours while simply enjoying each other's company without the need for constant talking. They both also have senses of elegance about them. Kagami with her fencing and Luka with his music. Luka would certainly also help Kagami relax her "I need to be perfect" train of thought.

Tom/Sabine- They are the definition of a healthy marriage. There is not a moment that is not completely sweet when they are together. They are probably the best parents on the show with how much they both obviously love Marinette. While a little cliche, it makes sense for the owners of a bakery to be as sweet as sugar.

Adrien/Nino- I am a sucker for friends-to-lovers stories. While Adrien and Nino are definitely great friends who give off big "bro" vibes, they would also make such a sweet couple. Nino has already made it clear how much he cares about Adrien given how often he tries to help him stand up to his dad. Especially when Nino tried to get Gabriel to let Adrien have a birthday party in the Bubbler episode. Adrien has also shown Nino support when he needed it, such as going with him when he was on The Challenge show in the Simon Says episode.

Like: Kim/Alix- These two have such a fun dynamic. They would be one of those couples that like to compete with each other but also would have a very nice relationship. Plus, their height difference would only make their relationship even cuter.

Sabrina/Chloe- Given actual character development and they could be a good couple. When Chloe had been trying to get better, she did show that she was protective of Sabrina. Such as when in the Ladybug episode, Chloe shielded Sabrina from the scarlet akumas. We also saw in the Miracular episode that the two did have a sweet friendship before Chloe got even more toxic. It would have led to a very sweet friends-to-lovers story.

Ivan/Mylene- Another of the most solid couples on the show. They were the first teenage couple on the show, actually, since they were brought together in the Origin episodes. And they have always been shown to be incredibly sweet. Mylene's nickname for Ivan, Teddy Bear, is very adorable! Plus, Ivan is also shown to be incredibly protective of Mylene.

Kim/Ondine- Kim is the loveable idiot while Ondine is basically his brain. The two are a great match with Kim's energy and child-like attitude balanced by Ondine's seriousness and maturity. Plus, Ondine helps Kim grow as a person when she helps him realize how harmful his past actions have been against Marinette. Not to mention also helping him see that jokes are better if everyone is laughing rather than just him.

Adrien/Plagg- Obviously, I am thinking about this with the headcanon of kwami having human forms. If that were true, then the two of them would make a cute couple! Plagg would help Adrien embrace his more chaotic side while also helping him stand up to those like Gabriel, Lila, and Chloe. Adrien would also help Plagg find a balance between his love of chaos and a more sensitive side.

Luka/Nathaniel- Two artists being together would be nothing short of adorable and cute! Luka's calm and gentle personality would fit very well with Nathaniel's shy and quiet personality. I can already picture how adorable it would be for Nathaniel to be leaning against Luka and sketching while Luka would be playing a soft melody on his guitar.

Adrien/Nathanial- I mostly enjoy these two together because of my headcanon that Adrien is a big anime fan. Given that Adrien did pose for Kagami when helping her with her art, he would definitely do the same thing for Nathaniel. Plus, it would be really cute for them to have moments where they are simply in a comic book store and geeking out over finding comic books they enjoy. And given his love of anime, Adrien would certainly want to help Nathaniel with his comic. It gives Adrien a chance to be himself rather than being the "perfect model" while giving Nathaniel the chance to open up by being with such a bright and cheery person.

Rose/Prince Ali- It's the little details that make these two work. Since learning that Rose has an unknown illness, it made even more sense why she admires Prince Ali for his charity work. Because charities like his probably were a bright spot in her life when her illness was worse. Plus, being with Rose would give Prince Ali a break from royal life when Rose would show him how to live like a normal teenager rather than always having to act like a prime and proper prince.

Adrien/Nathaniel- Two adorable boys who both have different kinds of shyness. Nathaniel is the usual kind of shy while Adrien is more the kind of shy where he is socially awkward, which leads him to not be as open as others. I headcannon that Adrien is a big fan of anime, which would give him something in common with Nathaniel. It could also allow Adrien to help Nathaniel with his comics and art. Plus, despite not being a designer, Adrien would have been around the fashion world for long enough to help Nathaniel with the designs of some of his creations. Also, maybe give him some fashion advice so that Nathaniel would STOP WEARING THOSE AWFUL PURPLE PANTS!

Nathaniel/Luka- Another artistic pair. An artist and a musician. Plus, Luka's calm personality would help a lot with Nathaniel's shyness. He would know when he should push Nathaniel out of his comfort zone and when he should simply let him be. Nathaniel can also help be Luka's muse for his music. Not to mention also help create looks for Kitty Section and give great ideas for music videos they could do.

Good: Marinette/Alya- Friend-to-lovers is one of my favorite relationship tropes. It's adorable in so many ways. Plus, the two are very good together. Alya always helps Marinette go outside her comfort zone while Marinette helps keep Alya grounded whenever she goes too far with her ambitions.

Alya/Ladybug- Aside from the obvious hero worship Alya feels for Ladybug, the two have shown to have more than that. Alya has seen the human side of Ladybug when she helped her with Damocles when he tried to be a superhero. Plus, Alya has also shown that she is still willing to put herself at risk to help even when she knows there are heroes around. Which is the reason Ladybug gave her the fox miraculous.

Marinette/Kagami- Despite Marinette first being jealous and also trying to sabotage Kagami, the two later formed a really good friendship. Plus, Marinette has tried to encourage Kagami to stand up for herself against her controlling mother. Plus, Kagami's organized way of life is a perfect balance to the chaos of Marinette's life and general personality.

Marinette/Nino- Nino did have a crush on Marinette before Ladybug locked him and Alya away during the Animan episode. If he never got over his crush, the two could have been a cute couple. Especially since they are childhood friends, which makes it an even cuter take on the friends-to-lovers trope. Plus, Nino is also a naturally relaxed person, which definitely would help balance Marinette's chaos.

Don't Mind: Gabriel/Natalie- The two could be cute as long as Gabriel would get over his obsession with his wife. If he simply moved on, he could see how close he and Natalie had become, which could naturally grow into a relationship. It does help that Natalie is already a surrogate mother to Adrien.

Nathaniel/Alix- This could be a cute friends-to-lovers story. Alix could easily balance out Nathaniel's shy nature, helping him to open up more and take him out of his comfort zone. Nathaniel could also help Alix calm down and not be as competitive as she usually is.

Sabrina/Max- They would be a fun brainy couple who could be that nerdy couple that likes to spend time reading the same book in the library together. Plus, both of them tend to avoid confrontation and enjoy being on the quiet side. They would be the type of couple who prefer to stay inside to watch movies or read books than to go out to clubs or parties.

Nooroo/Dusuu- They would bond over their shared trauma of having to deal with Gabriel. They would probably spend long nights complaining over Gabriel and his lack of fashion sense. They could have a lot of fun making fun of him, his lack of fashion sense, and his horrible akuma designs.

Wayzz/Trixx- Wayzz would be the calm and thoughtful one while Trixx would be the wild and reckless one. Another couple who would balance each other out very nicely.

Wayzz/Pollen- I just think they would be cute together. Especially since they are both similar with how they hold a lot of respect for their holders. Even if their holders do questionable things. Aka, most of Chloe and Master Fu's actions. But, their loyalty is something to admire.

Sabrina/New York Boy- She was shown to have chemistry with him. Even if they did not have a lot of time and he did not even get a name, giving Sabrina any development beyond Chloe is great.

Eh: Adrien/Juleka- The two are great friends, but there is only a little potential for them to be a couple. The most that I can see would be Adrien helping Juleka get more confident because of his more open and optimistic personality and Juleka could help Adrien learn to rebel against his father.

Chloe/Lila- Talk about a match made in hell. They would probably only end up together when they would realize that no one else would ever be able to want them.

Marinette/Cat Noir- The best side of the love square, in the opinions of most people. They have had fun together while also being able to talk to each other about their worries and insecurities. But, they did both really overdo it during their "fake date" which caused Marinette's dad to become akumatized.

Marinette/Nathaniel- They are both artistic types and would probably make great art together. Marinette could even be able to help him design outfits for his comic.

Max/Alix- The pairing of a nerd and an athletic girl is cute to think about. It also is cute to think of them together because they are two of the class "shorties." Just two small teens getting together. Very cute.

Ladybug/Queen Bee- It might actually give Chloe the chance to become a better person if she were to get together with her hero. Or, it could end in disaster because it would make her believe that she really could have whatever she wanted.

Chat Blanc/Dark Ladybug- It would not be the first time that two villains would end up together and fall in love with causing chaos as a pair. It would be like a more "healthy" version of Joker and Harley Quinn.

Dislike: Ladybug/Chloe- A hero and a civilian would never work! Especially since Ladybug never did much to stop Chloe from being a bully. After Chloe nearly crashed a train by using Venom, Ladybug should have put her foot down and never gave her the bee miraculous back. Giving it back to Chloe only encouraged her in the worst ways.

Marinette/Chloe- I have no idea why people ship these two together. It's a bully and their victim. Why does anyone think they would be good together? I have never understood that whole "bullying someone means they secretly like them" trope. It never made sense to me and it makes even less sense for these two. Chloe tormented Marinette beyond just simple bullying. They would NEVER work together.

Ladybug/Luka- Again, a hero and civilian would never work. Especially since we saw how Monarch specifically went after Luka when he learned that Luka was aware of Ladybug and Cat Noir's identities. A hero dating a civilian would only make an even worse situation to that. Plus, if they did not work as civilians, then they wouldn't work as a hero and a civilian.

Lila/Sabrina- Sabrina already is basically a slave to Chloe. Lila is shown to also hate work in any form. So, any type of "relationship" between the two would mostly just be Lila taking advantage of Sabrina and using her lies to make Sabrina do all of her work for her while likely making Sabrina think she was "helping" because she was doing something for "such a charitable person."

Marinette/Tikki- Unless kwami have a human form, I highly doubt that it's possible. Plus, Tikki doesn't do much to rein in Marinette's worst personality traits. So, they would be a slightly toxic couple.

Marinette/Max- Marinette already has been shown to not think about Max's feelings when she joined the video game tournament just to be close to Adrien despite how much she knew Max had practiced for it. I doubt she would fix things even if she and Max got together.

Marinette/Marc- I am one of those who headcanon them as cousins, so that is mainly why I don't ship them.

Alya/Adrien- I like them as friends, but I don't see them as a couple. I wish they had more moments of friendship between the two of them rather than having Marinette and Alya being the friendship that shines through the most.

Felix/Marinette- Literally the first time they met was when Felix pretended to be Adrien and tried to force a kiss on her/Ladybug. Not exactly the best way to start a relationship.

Hate: Adrien/Chloe- Chloe clings to Adrien as if he is a piece of prized meat. She treats him like a trophy to be won and doesn't care about him as a person. While they may be childhood friends, that only has made Chloe think she has some type of claim to him. Also, she brings out a lot of the worst parts of Adrien's passive side since he did make excuses for a lot of her behavior until he fully learned how abusive her bullying was.

Adrien/Lila- They are very similar to Chloe/Adrien in how Lila also clings to him. And unlike Chloe, Lile had not known him for long enough to make it acceptable in any way. She also treats him like a trophy to be won and openly acts like that when she uses her lies to try and get close to him. Also similar to Chloe, Lila doesn't care about Adrien as a person. She only cares about him as the "perfect model" that his father forces him to be. Plus, she had also teamed up with Gabriel to spy on Adrien and use her lies to try and isolate him from "bad influences." Which basically translates to anyone who is not her.

Marinette/Lila- Is there really any reason to explain why this is an awful ship? It's even worse than Marinette/Chloe. Even if Marinette was not aware that Lila is a liar and was simply kind to her, Lila would likely use that to take advantage of Marinette's kindness while also manipulating her feelings. It would be like an even worse version of Chloe and Sabrina's "friendship."

Marinette/Adrien- I have made it clear how I feel about these two. Marinette is a stalker! The schedule she keeps of Adrien's activities, the presents she has planned for him up to his fiftieth birthday, the wall of pictures of him, the plans for their children right down to how they look, and the video she sent to him on the anniversary of his mother's disappearance to confess her "love." It's all awful! It's one thing to have a celebrity crush, but it's another to be as obsessed as she is. Adrien may have a file of pictures of Ladybug and a bunch of her merchandise, but it's nowhere near as extreme as how Marinette behaves with him. Plus, as a superhero, there is no doubt there are tons of people who have the same stuff for Ladybug.

Luka/Lila- Did the two of them ever even officially meet on the show? People usually have Luka as one of those who remain on Marinette's side when others turn against her because of Lila. But, I don't think Luka has ever even met her. But, despite that, I don't think they could ever work. Luka is the best character on the show. He's calm, kind, empathetic, and protective. He's the opposite of Lila in every way. Given his ability to hear the inner songs of the people he meets, he would likely get a headache from being around Lila and forced to hear whatever noise her inner "song" would be.

Kim/Chloe- Chloe would bring out the worst in Kim. And she has done so before. She was the reason Kim had been a bully when she influenced him to do that awful prank against Marinette by using her fear of bugs against her. Plus, it's hard to forget that even when Kim did have a crush on her, Chloe stomped on his heart by insulting him and the gift he got her, which got him akumatized into Dark Cupid.

Ladybug/Adrien- Ladybug's common sense pretty much goes right out the window whenever Adrien is involved. During Volpina's first appearance, when she created an illusion of dangling him off the Eiffel Tower, Ladybug was incredibly close to giving up her earrings if it hadn't been for Cat Noir destroying the illusion. Ladybug knew Volpina's powers were illusions and still believed it just because it was an illusion of Adrien in danger. Also, Ladybug abused her powers during the Bubbler episode when she used her lucky charm to stop Adrien from slow dancing with Chloe. Also, with Adrien, it's never a good idea to date your celebrity crush. It's bound to end badly.

Luka/Chloe- Another pair that never officially met on the show. The only time the two have interacted was during Miracle Queen when Chloe had Luka under her control and she used him to fight against Ladybug and Cat Noir. And while she did say he was cute, she also immediately insulted him by saying he looked like he got his clothes out of the trash. Luka would never put up with any of her bratty behavior and would call her out every time she would act like that. Plus, once he would hear that Chloe was the reason Juleka was akumatized into Reflekta, on two different occasions, he'd never want to date her.

Luka/Marinette- The two of them failed completely as a couple on the show. For starters, he had only been Marinette's rebound when she tried to get over Adrien and failed completely since she honestly did not try very hard to get over him. Luka gave her his whole heart, including the most adorable confession of love I have ever heard. But he always came second to Marinette whenever she had a choice of anything else over him. There was also the episode with Desperada when Jagged Stone came to the houseboat for a new guitarist. Marinette didn't even give Luka a glance before taking his guitar, one of his most prized possessions, and handed it to Adrien to audition for Jagged despite knowing full well that Adrien played piano and not guitar.

Chloe/Prince Ali- Very similar to the issues with Adrien/Chloe. Chloe would only treat Ali as arm candy and a walking bank. Plus, Chloe would definitely abuse the power she would get from being a "future princess." She's bad enough as the mayor's daughter, so she would only be even worse as a princess.

Chloe/Kagami- Every time the two have interacted, it has not gone well. The biggest example being when Chloe teamed up with Marinette to try and sabotage Kagami at the movie premiere of the Ladybug and Cat Noir movie simply because Kagami was there at the invitation of Adrien. There has never been a single good interaction between the two of them.

Chloe/Nathaniel- The argument against these two begins and ends with one word. Evillustrator. That entire episode basically summed up why the two would never work. One, Nathaniel is way too shy and soft-spoken to be with someone as loud and proud as Chloe. Two, she would want him to quit doing his hero art and only make drawings of her. And three, she humiliated him on his birthday and defaced one of his drawings that she stole.

Ladybug/Cat Noir- Cat Noir's crush on her did get in the way of him being a good hero multiple times. I do think he was a better hero than Ladybug, but that doesn't mean I don't see his flaws. Especially with the way he acted during Frozer and Glaciator. But, at the same time, Ladybug could have treated him so much better. She treated him like a sidekick and not a partner. She constantly left him in the dark and used him as basically a human shield. She gambled with his life multiple times and never once saw anything wrong with it.

Tadaima, Okaeri! Ep 3 Stray Thoughts

Last week, Masaki was sick (he was in heat) and so couldn’t care for Hikari. With the help of their tsundere neighbor, Yuki, Hiroumu and their other friend were able to care for and distract Hikari while Masaki was ill. It was adorable as any other episode, with a focus on Yuki becoming  Hikari’s first friend.

Feels super inappropriate to call your son’s partner sexy. I will just roll with the social rules of the world.

Interesting. I guess Hikari is also an alpha since the grandfather is responding to his protectiveness.

We have interesting drama building here. Masaki is maybe feeling some sympathy for the grandfather, but Hiromu is mad that his father is overstepping again.

The way Masaki and Hiromu talk to each other is great. I like that Hiromu doesn’t attempt to mask with Masaki and that they solve their problems together. I like that Hiromu’s tendency to making a firm decision doesn’t come at the cost of Masaki’s ability to give his own thoughts or guidance about how they proceed.

I really like the way Hiromu talks to Hikari. I like that he instills purpose and direction into his son in a lot of their conversations. I get that it’s a genre thing for him to do so, but every kid I ever taught seemed to thrive when they had a role to fulfill.

This is actually a compelling fight they’re having. The grandfather is here to try to reconcile and show that he’s come around on the relationship, but the way he’s communicating it still implies his prejudice. Hiromu refuses to compromise about this.

This show really is an excellent example of what gay slice-of-life could be for us. I feel like folks would get bored with this in live action because this amount of sweetness doesn’t hold for long always, but I’m having a blast with this. This is probably my favorite show right now.

wahh thank you so much...!! i feel like im still trying to figure them out in a lot of ways but i do really like ironing out my visual interpretations of them so im really happy to hear if people like what im coming up with

also anon you super activated the part of my brain that cant help but yap about art theory... i spent some time writing as many tips as i could think of. unfortunately i dont think i have the time currently to do a fully illustrated guide, but ill still try to include some visual examples:

ANATOMY:

to preface i think that like 100% of the time you should reference a real life photo for anatomy rather than other artwork or drawn references. the best way to learn the body is by… well, actually looking at the body! but also artwork is informed by a person's own artistic ability/stylization choices/sense of idealism, so while looking at art can help give you an idea on how to break down forms, i think you would be best served observing real life references. i labor on this point because i do think that having over relied on drawn reference material and avoiding photographic references on the basis of not being interested on realism hindered me as a largely self-taught artist as a kid, so i want to encourage live or photographic reference since anatomy is one of the foundations from which everything else is built on. that being the case, all of my doodles i'm doing for this are going to be for the sake of example rather than to strictly say how you should or should not be drawing something

-> when you are doing a study of a photo, just try copying it as best as you can. pay close attention to the natural lines and shapes of the body -- the S-curve shape of the leg, the triangular shape of the forearm, the trapezoid shape of hips/thighs when they sit, and so on. note where the body folds or squishes or pulls; how mass will shift to accommodate a certain position. if a form is hard to visualize, focus on the negative space and carve that out, rather than strictly drawing the positive space.

don't expect to get it perfect the first time. in fact, iterate on it multiple times to build understanding. try doing it to a timer of 15, then 10, then 5 minutes. doing this will force you to have to prioritize the most important shapes. you can help reinforce this by using a thicker brush or a brush with no pen pressure (no joke ms paint works great for this) to force you to be loose and not become preoccupied with details.

-> pinterest is a great resource for finding and compiling photo reference material

-> organic shapes are curved, so embracing/emphasizing that (particularly for the extremities) can help make your drawings look more natural or fluid

POSES: -> it all begins & ends with contrapposto… you've probably heard of the line of action, which is related. if you're offsetting the shoulders & hips, it: makes poses more natural, more dynamic, and helps the pose sort of "draw itself" -- the legs will follow the direction of the hips, and you can use the arms to reinforce the angles

-> context is key. don't ask: what pose should i draw? instead ask: what do i want this character to convey? what does happiness, anger, sadness, and so forth look on this particular character? how do they express that? consider these drawings: these are both ostensibly the same pose, but look at how changing just the shape of the spine recontextualizes it.

for more on pose design i recommend watching Tracer & Pose Design 101 - The Animation of Overwatch by New Frame Plus (i promise this is a genuinely super informative video).

to expand on this, in general, all of the components of a piece (background, composition, pose, etc.) are best considered in conjunction rather than separately. it is difficult to choose a pose and then choose a background because they are missing the context that would make a piece cohesive. when you are planning a drawing, try to begin with your general concept/idea/prompt and then do several thumbnails -- small and quick doodles that should take no longer than 5 minutes each -- developing it: you may find that the pose and bg will naturally fall into place.

-> silhouette: the degree to which you need to push this varies by style but generally speaking the pose needs to be readable; i.e. instantly recognizable. try to keep important elements of the gesture outside of the silhouette. for example, if the character is pointing, keep that arm out of the interior of the body. the same pose can be more or less readable or dynamic depending on where the character is pointed in relation to the viewer

-> exaggeration!! goes along with the previous point. push the pose as much as you can (and what makes sense for your style) to communicate your pose as clearly and as intensely as possible.

FACES: -> i highly recommend the app Handy Art Reference Tool by Belief Engine for all things related to drawing hands/heads/feet. its on both android and ios. it isn't free -- it costs around $3 -- but that is seriously such a small price to pay for the amount of utility you get out of it: the hands models are fully poseable (there's also pose presets), you can rotate the head models however you want, and there is 3-point customizable lighting. it is really helpful for getting those super tricky and hyperspecific head angles that you just can't find a real life reference for. that being said given that there's only a few different head model variants, bear in mind how differences in features can affect what exactly a face will look like in those angles.

-> i still recommend doing studies of real people. as with anything else, learning generalized proportions is important, even if you are going to later on bend or break this depending on style

-> as for my own approach... it kind of depends on the style i'm doing at that particular time. for my paintings (what id consider my main style) i approach a character with a few real-world features in mind and then apply them to the best of my ability. it usually will take a few iterations to land on an interpretation i really like as i try out different things. a lot of the face also gets developed during rendering rather than through my initial sketch too, as i adjust for lighting and correct proportions on the fly

if i were to recommend anything, i think it would be to nail down your most distinct features first -- the ones that will make your character's face recognizable, and could apply regardless of art style. in my case with kim dokja, i knew when i first started drawing him that i wanted to give him a longer face and down-turned eyes. when i decided to do the disco elysium inspired set, in which i was breaking out of my comfort zone by letting go of any idealizations focusing on conveying characterization/making them feel "real", i landed on some more specific traits (defined lower lids/perpetually tired eyes/eyebags(?) the crease there idk how to describe it) which i continue to try to evoke even if im drawing something much more cartoony

as a side note, this very same process changed yjh much more dramatically

those handful of key features will be the thing that you can then take into a simpler style and simplify or exaggerate to whatever degree suits you. you can also play with shape theory (square = sturdy/solid, circle = natural/smooth/welcoming, triangle = energetic/dangerous). shape theory doesn't necessarily need to be so rigid -- you can combine shapes as you please to convey whatever vibe you're going for -- so please think of it as a tool that may help rather than a rigid law you must abide by.

-> expressions: exaggerate them. thats kind of it!! make it big!!! you wanna be able to really feel those emotions. the principles of squash & stretch help here: think of how the muscles move when you, say, open the eyes or mouth really big. as one side of the face stretches open, the other side squashes to accommodate it

even without changing the position of the jaw here, moving the nose and scrunching the eyes will sell the expression

you can also play with squash/stretch to break proportions to sell a feeling more

since expressions are just, well, poses for the face, everything else for poses applies here (and facial expressions & pose should also be considered in tandem). while the term contrapposto itself just refers to the offset of the shoulders & hips, the similar principle of asymmetry also carries here as that will help make the expression a bit more dynamic.

Just for my own documentation (and anyone else’s if they want it) here’s a summary of Thursday at Silverstone. This is going under the cut because while this is a summary, I myself cannot summarise the words lmao.

The basics/area/idk how to describe it:

- Arriving at the track it really feels like more people are here for Thursday than last year (hopefully this continues for the weekend since this is regularly not a well attended race in comparison).

- There was also so many people wearing different merch whereas the last 2 years have been pretty much Marc and Vale. Fabio I think actually looked the most popular this year, but there was a surprising amount of Martin fans.

- The one thing I’m disappointed about is that last year they changed the bit around the fanzone from grass to gravel and it’s the same this year. It makes it a lot more inaccessible and its so difficult to get to the activities and stuff.

- In fact I think they changed the layout way more this year but it was still fine, just weird that they don’t want us touching grass lol.

- The fans as a whole behaved well but there were a few people that were rude, not necessarily towards the riders but towards other fans.

The paddock:

- The paddock opened at 11 but the queue started at like half past 10, but it really didn’t take long to get in so it was fine. It was ridiculously hot though.

- The paddock itself is massive, but for the GP teams its too small unlike the old layout. They’ve had to add a secondary part at the back for some of the smaller teams in Moto2/3 for their hospitality and motor homes.

- They didn’t have anywhere to get drinks in the paddock unlike last year. We wouldve had to leave to get drinks but luckily we bought water and they had refilling stations.

- We wanted to get to the pitlane for the bike reveals and the queue was… well just absolutely ridiculous to put it mildly. We decided to skip it which was sad but we got to watch the reveals on the screen (Yamaha and Pramac won for me and I love Trackhouse’s too).

The auction:

- The auction is so fun. Basically all the riders put something of theirs, for example a knee slider or boots or something, and then people bid (slightly ridiculous) amounts of money for them for the two wheels for life.

- Joe Roberts was brought on stage and he was giving away part of his race winning bike from mugello??? They got 4k for it.

- Jake Dixon was there on stage but he was ill. He brought Summer (his daughter) out on stage and she waved at all of us which was so cute.

- The auctioned a Prosecco bottle that was signed by Johann Zarco, Jack Miller and wait for it…. Pecco Bagnaia. No one else seemed to care how ironic that was but I burst out laughing.

- Johann Zarco talks a lot. By a lot I mean he may as well have presented the auction himself. That’s all I can say about the MotoGP riders that I didn’t know already.

- Actually I just want to say that Fabio seems really shy and reserved but he knows how to work a crowd. The British crowd absolutely love both him and Rins but I genuinely think he’s the best supported rider here, maybe even more than Marc.

- He also did the auction for his boots which was absolutely hilarious. He wanted to buy them himself too but got outbidded 😭

- Also Remy kind of said on stage that it appears he will be doing another year of WSBK with Yamaha!!!!!

- We left early because of the rain but it was so fun, if I had money then I would’ve been bidding on stuff but it was fun regardless.

The riders (and team people i suppose):

- Met the Moto3 baby goats extremely early and David and Collin are both lovely and so polite too.

- Ran into Massimo Rivola. I have a picture with him and he smiled at me when he saw I was wearing Aprilia merch. Also found Pablo Nieto and Frankie Carchedi and said hello to Nadia Padovani.

- My friend saw Somkiat in the motorhome and shouted at him, and he kind of jumped and pointed but he came down for a chat and a photo. Again, he is probably one of the, if not the, nicest person in the whole paddock.

- Found Celestino and again he is so nice but also comes across as really shy. I actually told him he was my favourite out of everyone and he seemed really grateful for it (unless he thought I was crazy which is also possible).

- Saw somebody who I thought was J.A. Rueda but I’m not 100% sure. Also ran into both Senna Agius and Jeremy Alcoba and when I tell you those boys look the same its crazy.

- Saw Albert and had to stop myself from apologising that I jinx him every weekend. Also a great guy it seems and we saw him a few more times after that.

- Not saying it’s necessarily him all the time but it’s two years in a row I’ve had a very negative experience of a certain #1. Never said hello or anything when people said it to him, unlike literally every other rider (yes including Fabio and Marc and any other person you want to try a pull a gotcha card on).

- I need to issue a public apology to Jorge Martin because I saw him on his scooter and shouted “Hola Jorge” from a distance and following that he got swamped. He’s not off the shit list but he was actually a nice guy. I also asked if he could sign anything Aprilia yet (thought I’d ask because i had my pen and cap) and he smiled and said not this time.

- I have had skin-on-skin contact with Fabio (not even out of context: he touched my arm while I was helping him escape on the scooter from a crowd).

- I didn’t see him but my friend did and the good news is for the first time in two years Pedro has arrived at Silverstone not on crutches!!!

- Saw Maverick, Aleix and Enea (who was walking back and forth around Aprilia for some reason). They were down the opposite end to all of us but all smiled and waved. Maverick disappeared somewhere so I’m pretty sure he’s a wizard.

- Found Luca who was lovely again. Also Miguel who said he has given up dentistry now!! Again lovely and stopped for as many as he could, as did Bezz.

- We stopped to get some shade, which conveniently ended up being outside the Yamaha hospitality. Got a picture with Remy and I got thrown off because he was speaking perfect Italian to someone.

- Saw Sarah (Jake’s wife) and we said good luck to him for the weekend, and we asked where he was but she told us he was ill (which you could tell from the auction lol)

- David Muñoz was laughing at everyone queueing for and just sat there on his bike.

- Saw Ai and he was really patient because I could not get the camera to work. Again such a lovely guy and in case anyone was curious: he and Somkiat are still really good friends and Somkiat was riding Ai around on the same scooter so they’re still cool.

- I said it earlier but favourite rider of the day: Tony Arbolino aka loml. I cannot even tell you how nice he is because that deserves a post in itself. He was so happy I had his cap that he thanked me before I could thank him for signing it (his signature is interesting to say the least lmao I put the picture so you be the judge). Also some man offered to take our picture but I didn’t realise and I’m fairly confident it was his manager.

So yeah this was basically my day. If you wanna ask about any other riders cause I saw so many (the ones I’ve mentioned are the ones I have pictures with or of) then feel free to ask but yes 11/10 day, would recommend it to everyone. Hopefully we have a good weekend to follow!

I am sorry if my English is bad. I didn't understand the mausoleum part of the episode? What kind of a mausoleum would have been socially acceptable? I often get confused on the cultural aspects of the show like this I have never been to a mausoleum but it looked fine to me.

ok someone else asked about logan having a closed-casket funeral so let me bundle these into one answer since they both tell us a lot about logan.

the mausoleum registers as tacky to the kids for a few reasons. first, if you're buying your own mausoleum in a city with no graveyard drainage problems, you're basically announcing that you consider yourself so important you need to, like, erect a monument for your grave. it's braggadocious. in logan's case, connor's probably right that logan didn't want to go underground, which is hard for the kids to think about because it makes them see logan as fallible and afraid, in contrast to the godlike image he always projected with them. second, logan bought it on discount from a dot-com guy, meaning some dipshit tech bubble scammer designed the place for his own aesthetic, and logan essentially just glommed onto it. which is like, not only a memorial to yourself, but one that's not even bespoke. third, it's pink marble and yet somehow simultaneously manages to look sort of tryhard dictatorial ("stalin and liberace"). so, architecturally, it comes off as overcompensatory and flashy, the sort of gauche new money shit that logan was always doing even though he really wanted people to perceive him as classy and dynastic.

basically logan's last impression on the earth is this fancy, overdesigned tomb that registers as accidentally cringey and pathetic to his own kids. it was an extremely expensive purchase by median income standards, yet extremely cheap relative to logan's wealth. it comes off like he half-assed the eternal display of his own body, the thing he always tried to use to telegraph strength and yet also the thing he perceived as failing him as he got sicker. and, with that in mind, i always assumed he would have a closed-casket funeral because he's always considered it humiliating for people to perceive his body as anything other than a powerful tool for doing business. he didn't want to be cared for physically when he was sick because it meant acknowledging that sickness; he hid his scars from his children their entire lives. he wanted to consider himself a rational being freed of all unruly bodily phenomena and illnesses, as he considered these things weaknesses. of course, the kids respond to this in different ways, most notably with connor's cryogenics thing and with roman's fixation on logan's body at the funeral, carrying around his sweaters and advil, and being the only one to visit the body on the plane yet being horrified by connor's photo of it at the funeral home and refusing to walk into the mausoleum.

Tuesday, September 3, 2002 | 06:35 A.M.

Bradley wakes up to his alarm clock blaring in his ear, feeling like he’s going to throw up, which is weird for him. Mav says that he’s never met anyone with a stronger stomach. Eighteen-year-olds have stomachs of steel, his mom jokes when she’s having a good day.

He stumbles down the hall and hangs his head over the toilet. Nothing comes up. The nausea goes away in a few minutes, but his gut still feels twisted. He brushes his teeth and decides the likely culprit is the new recipe Mav attempted for dinner last night. He choked down a few bites of the horrible fish tacos before his uncle called it a failure and ordered pizza.

Back in his room, it doesn’t take him long to finish getting ready, pulling on his new first-day-of-school outfit and shaping his mustache. He doesn’t care what Slider says; it’s looking good, much thicker than when he started growing it in April.

“It’s my first day of senior year, my last first day of school. Until the academy, anyway. But with the summer training, the first day of classes probably won’t even feel like a first day.”

His father’s official Lieutenant-JG portrait stares back at him. Unanswering as he fixes his hair.

“Mom is getting worse… She’s getting weaker; I don’t think we have very long before she has to go into hospice. I really want her to get better - I wished for it - but I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

He swallows hard and fights back tears, remembering his birthday just a few months ago. Everything hadn’t seemed quite as bad then as it is now.

“I hope she can make it to Christmas. I almost have enough money saved up to buy her that pair of earrings that look like the ones Princess Diana had at her wedding. They’re not real pearls like hers, obviously, but the lady at the jewelry counter told me they’re replicas, so I think she’ll like them anyway.”

Brown eyes identical to his own stare back at him. Hints of the mischievous, prank-loving man visible in the polite smile captured. The old photo is carefully tucked into the edge of his mirror; it was his mom’s first, but she gave it to him when he was eight. She had caught him staring at it every day for a week, quietly talking to it about his day.

“Wish me luck, Goose. It’s gonna be a big year.”

Downstairs, he’s greeted with the second weird thing of the day. First, his stomach, and now his mom is flipping pancakes. She’s hardly had the strength to use the bathroom by herself in the last six months, but this morning, she’s standing at the stove, singing along to the radio, and making his favorite breakfast.

She’s always said that bad things happen in threes, but strange things happen in pairs.

He thinks she might be right, but if she feels good, he’s not complaining. She never feels good anymore.

“There he is! Oh, Mav! Look at my baby boy, all grown up and ready for his last year of high school!”

“Ma…” He groans, and without prompting, he bends down to let her kiss and pinch his cheeks like he always does.

He’s not sure how many good days she has left, so he tries his best to behave and make her life easier.

He doesn't complain when she asks him to take the garbage out after he already did; her memory hasn’t been as good since she got sick. He keeps the anger inside when everyone forgets his baseball games because she had chemo; it’s more important for Mav and Ice to take care of her than to watch him throw a ball around. He even offered up his college fund to help pay for another round of treatment. He was denied before he could even finish the suggestion, but he just wants her to get better more than anything in the world.

Needs her to get better.

She sets a stack of pancakes in front of him, and again, he has the urge to cry when she kisses the top of his head. Her perfume takes over his senses, and if he closes his eyes, it’s almost like he’s little again.

A massive stack of fluffy, perfectly round pancakes, slathered in butter and syrup, filled with his mom’s love.

Mav sitting across the table from him, drinking the worst black coffee to exist on the planet.

His mom humming off-key at the stove, her beautiful, golden hair swishing as she gets into a song.

But then he opens his eyes, and he’s not little anymore.

The pancakes are still covered with butter and enough syrup to give him a cavity, but they’re not the same. They’re flat and mishappen; her arms aren’t very strong anymore, so Mav must’ve had to help her.

Mav still sits across from him, terrible black coffee in his mug, but now he looks old. Too old for someone in his thirties. They’ve been lucky he’s been able to be here this past year. After Mom got sick, Ice and Viper pulled some strings to get him assigned to a shore-duty desk job. Bradley knows he hates it. Can see it in the way he watches every plane that passes overhead - civilian, military, it doesn’t matter - his fingers twitching to be the one controlling the powerful engines. But he never complains, is steady and strong, taking Mom to appointments and Bradley to school.

His mom is humming at the stove for the first time in a long time, somehow more in tune than she’s ever been. He wants to make a joke about how the treatments must have fixed her tone-deafness, but it would just make everyone sad. A reminder that it’s the only thing her treatment has fixed.

It’s taken everything else away.

Her skin, once bright and youthful, is now dull and gray-toned. Her energy has been zapped; she doesn’t even have it in her to make it through their Sunday movie nights. Her body is frail. She was always slim, but now she borders on gaunt, her appetite nonexistent most of the time. Her hair was the first thing to go, a rotation of brightly colored scarfs and hats replacing the blonde strands that used to reach her shoulders. He looks at today’s choice. A bright red scarf that matches the white sundress and red cardigan she’s pulled on.

She looks pretty.

“You look pretty, mom.”

It grabs the attention of both adults, the two of them staring long enough that he squirms in his chair.

“Thank you, baby.” Her pleased smile tells him it was the right thing to say. “You don’t want your pancakes?”

“I do. They look great, but my stomach kinda hurt when I got up, so I don’t want to eat right now. I’m sorry. If you put them in the fridge, I can eat them for dinner.”

“Oh, don’t be silly! It’s a special day; we’re going to have something special for dinner! Something that Mav won’t be making.” The teasing smile she sends to the table makes the knot in his stomach unwind some. It makes him feel good enough to take a small bite.

The shape is wrong, and they’re not fluffy enough, but the taste is the same. The flavor melts over his tongue. The pressure in his chest, the one that showed up around the same time as his mom’s cancer diagnosis, lightens a little bit.

I should fake sick and stay home.

The thought comes out of left field, but he’s immediately on board. She hasn’t had a good day in forever, and he doesn’t want to miss it. Who knows when the next one will come. If there will even be another good day. He wants to spend time with his mom while she knows what’s happening.

“My stomach hurts; I don’t think I can go to school.” He groans and grabs his stomach, trying to look as pathetic as possible to sell his story.

He’s forgotten how sharp his mom is, how well she knows him. “Nice try, honey. You were fine two seconds ago, and you’re not missing your first day of senior year. Now, c’mon! It’s photo time!”

Carole is marching towards the front door before he can argue, so he tries to sway Mav in his favor. But the dark-haired man just shakes his head and avoids eye contact, grabbing the camera off the counter. Bradley stands in the middle of the kitchen, the knot retwisting itself.

He suddenly realizes that his upset stomach has nothing to do with yesterday’s tilapia trying to get its revenge and everything to do with what he overheard in the waiting room during his mom’s last checkup.

“I know, I heard. Isn’t it terrible? He'd been sick for a while, but it seemed like he was getting better. He even took his kids on a bike ride, and then - BAM! - he was gone the next day!”

“Oh, that happens a lot with people who are sick for a long time. Toward the end, they get this sudden burst of energy. It’s like God’s way of giving a happy memory to them and their loved ones. Letting them have one last good day before they go.”

He’s actually going to throw up this time.

Bradley drags his feet all the way to the front door, delaying his departure as much as possible. He doesn’t want to leave, but he knows he’s not going to win any fight against her right now - he’s going to school, come hell or high water. And he doesn’t want to fight with his mom; instead, he chooses to commit the moment to memory.

The gentle touch of her hands as she fusses with his hair, making sure it’s just right before any photos.

The brightness of her smile, how it’s the one thing that’s never dimmed despite everything she’s gone through.

The teasing barbs she exchanges with Mav, the man who has been family to her for longer than Bradley has been alive.

He looks at Mav, the man who has done his best to help raise him. Tried so hard to be a fatherly figure in place of the man who was lost too soon. Mav looks tired, Bradley wonders if he’s thinking the same thing as him.

She’s going. She’s going, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.

Just like every year since kindergarten, they squish together on the porch, his mom wrapping her arm around his waist. He thinks about how she used to have to squat down so their heads were together. Now, she’d have to go on her tiptoes, and he’d have to crouch down for that to happen.

He knows his smile looks fake; he has to force himself because this might be the last photo he gets with his mom, and that makes him sad beyond words. Carole quickly fixes that, tickling his side on that one spot that always gets him. He giggles and tries to squirm away, his smile turning happy and real as she laughs at him.

“You’re just like your father; he was ticklish in the exact same spot.”

Even the talk of Goose doesn’t bring them down like it usually does. Today, it lifts everyone’s spirit to realize how much he’s like the father he didn’t get to know.

After Mav has taken an ungodly number of photos, Bradley asks for the camera and stands next to his uncle. He snaps photo after photo of his mom, hoping that if he takes enough, he won’t ever be able to forget this moment. Then he shuffles Mav on the porch and takes photos of the pseudo-siblings. He rearranges them one last time, setting the camera on the porch railing and hitting the timer.

He doesn’t know it yet, but that photo of the three of them standing in the yard with the Bronco just visible in the background will be the last photo taken of his mother. As an adult, it will be tied for first place with five others as his favorite photo of all time.

After the last flash, Carole pulls him close. “I am so proud of you, Bradley. Your dad would be so proud of you. You’re such a good boy. I love you so much.”

He hugs her tighter than he should; he can’t help it. The little gasp she lets out at the intensity of his hug makes him feel a bit guilty, but he doesn’t stop.

He doesn’t want to let her go.

“I know, honey. I know. It’s okay.” She tries to soothe her baby, who isn’t a baby anymore. He’s a full-grown man who is so much smarter and wiser than any 18-year-old should ever be. He’s been through so much more than any kid should ever have to go through. She feels bad about how quickly he’s had to grow up. “Everything is gonna be okay.”

No, it’s not going to be okay. But he holds back his tears because he doesn’t want her to cry when she’s having a good day. He reluctantly lets go and slips on his sunglasses - aviators, just like Goose - before heading for his car, knowing that if he doesn’t go now, he’ll never be able to make himself leave.

With his stomach in even more knots than he thought possible, Bradley heads off to school, waving as he pulls out of the driveway. Trying to burn the image of his mom waving, one hand on her hip as Mav nudges her and makes her laugh.

From the moment he parks the Bronco in the seniors-only lot, the entire school day feels like torture. He can’t even enjoy the beginning of his senior year, something he had been waiting for.

Senior year means graduation. Graduation means going to college. College means packing his stuff for Annapolis. Annapolis means he can finally start working on his dream.

He’ll learn how to be an aviator while roaming the same halls as Goose while he learns the ins and outs of aeronautical engineering. He might even be lucky enough to get placed in the same dorm room. Being an aviator means he’ll be just like his father. And Mav. And Ice. And Slider. And all of his other uncles from the class of '86. But he can’t bring himself to be excited like usual.

Instead, he’s on edge the entire day. Waiting to get called to the nurse’s office. They all had agreed as a family - Bradley, Carole, Mav, and Ice - that if she passed when he was at school, they would have the front office call him down to the nurse’s office. Ice would pick him up, Mav likely busy dealing with the doctors and the funeral home and everything.

He can barely eat the lunch his mom packed. A peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich, cut into triangles like when he was little. Chips, cucumber slices, and a chocolate chip cookie round out the meal. He tosses most of the food but is careful to keep the little note she had put in the brown paper bag.

I love you, Bradley. You’re going to do great things.

He presses it between the pages of his calculus textbook before he goes to gym, making sure he doesn’t bend the pink sticky note, preserving her swirly handwriting as best he can.

Finally, the bell signaling the end of the eighth period rings. Relief washes through his body. There’s been no call from the nurse, and his school day is over. He hastily packs his bookbag and practically skips towards the parking lot, waving at some friends still in class. He’s one got free period during ninth period, and as a senior, he gets to leave early if he has no class.

He’s planning his route home - he wants to stop at the corner store to grab a treat for his mom - when he skids to a stop where the concrete sidewalk meets asphalt.

Ice is leaning against the bumper of the Bronco.

“Happy birthday, Bradley!” His mom yells before blowing a kazoo.

He couldn’t be happier. It’s his birthday, his mom is having a good day, and he just got the keys to the Bronco. It’s officially his, just like he always dreamed it would be.

“Your dad’s dream was for you two to fix it up together and give it to you on your eighteenth birthday,” Mav explained. “I know I can’t replace him, but we had a good time working on it, right?”

Bradley nods and hugs his uncle. Mav will never be his actual dad, but he’s the closest thing he has to one. He helped raise him. He had sacrificed so many weekends to spend time with him, showing him how to fix the Bronco or throw a football with a perfect spiral. He’d even taken him on motorcycle rides, but they agreed not to tell Mom about that.

“Okay, knock it off, you saps. It’s time to blow out your candles, Baby Goose!” Slider enters the dining room, looking ridiculous with a crooked party hat on his head. He’s concentrating hard to balance a cake that’s much too big for the six people in attendance at his birthday dinner.

It’s set in front of Bradley, and he laughs when he sees the cake is covered in little plane toys. It looks like a cake made for a little kid, and he loves it. Aunt Sarah lights his candles and starts singing. He sits there for 30 seconds, watching his family sing off-key and thinking about how he loves his family so much his heart hurts.

“Okay, baby! Close your eyes and make a wish!” Carole smooths a hand over his hair.

He smiles up at her. “Only if you help me, ma.”

She bends down, doing a quick countdown before they close their eyes and blow out the candles together. For the first time in years, Bradley actually makes a wish.

Please don’t let my mom die. I need her.

Ice is talking to Slider, who’s parked in his white Jeep, and even from this distance, he can tell they’ve been crying.

Slider has obviously given Ice a ride to school, and now they’re waiting for him. If Ice doesn’t have his truck, that means he’s going to be driving Bradley. And that can only mean one thing.

She’s gone. My wish didn’t come true.

His backpack hits the ground at the same time as his knees, and he throws up. It’s not a lot; he’s barely eaten today, and by the time his uncles reach him - their feet pounding on the pavement - he’s just sobbing and dry heaving into the grass.

“Breathe, Bradley. You gotta breathe, buddy.” He can’t tell which one is talking; blood is rushing in his ears, and he just keeps crying.

“Bradley.” It’s Ice, holding his face up. “Listen to me. Your mom is not dead. Do you hear me? She’s not gone. But she had to be taken to the hospital; we’re still waiting for the test results. We’re gonna go there right now, but you need to breathe first, okay? You gotta breathe.”

He does his best to stop crying and take in air. His body literally shudders on the first breath, his lungs greedily sucking in the oxygen. After a few breaths, a water bottle is shoved in front of his face. He doesn’t even know where it came from, but he drinks, his throat raw.

Slider pops a mint into his mouth before helping him stand. “It’ll help your throat and your stomach.”

He races to the car, throwing the keys to Ice, who almost drops them. Both adults speed out of the parking lot, heading directly for the hospital.

Halfway there Ice has a chilling realization. The car is silent. If he’s learned anything in the last twenty-odd years, it’s that a car ride involving a Bradshaw is never silent. There’s always talking and laughing. Usually, you can count on singing and bad seat dancing, but today, it’s silent. There’s not even the sound of crying. And when he looks over at Bradley, he’s startled to find him catatonically staring out the windshield, his face bone dry. He looks like a statue, and it freaks Ice out how quickly he’s shut down. He hasn’t attended Sunday service in a long time, doesn’t even know if he believes in a higher power, but at that moment, he sends off prayers to every deity he can name, hoping that one of them can pull off a miracle for the boy who’s already dealt with so much.

It’s even worse at the hospital, Slider nabbing the spot next to them seconds after Ice shifts into park. The three of them hurry towards the ICU, where a nurse lets them all in after she hears who they’re visiting. Technically, only Bradley and Pete meet the requirements to be allowed in, but the entire ward is aware of the situation and are prepared to let as many people visit as needed.

Bradley freezes halfway to Carole’s room, Slider almost running him over. A priest is walking out of her room. He shakes hands with Mav and somberly nods at the frozen trio when he passes.

Mav watches as his best friends gently nudge his godson forward. His heart feels like it’s splitting in two as tears start streaming down Bradley’s face. A face that looks so old and so young at the same time. Maverick feels like he’s watching his 18-year-old nephew transform into the little boy who just lost his dad. His lower lip trembles just like it used to when he would fall and scrap his knee. Except this time, there’s nothing Mav can do to make it better. There’s no antibacterial spray, no Spiderman band-aid, no over-dramatic kiss with magical healing powers. This time, there’s only a young man who’s now taller than him. He stands in the doorway with red eyes and a mustache that makes him look so much like Goose.

“What happened?” Bradley croaks, afraid to enter the room. He hates the way his mom looks when she’s hooked up to all those machines. The beeping hurts his ears. “Why was the priest in here?”

“I don’t know, kid. We were about to eat lunch, and she collapsed. The doctors don’t know either; the test results didn’t show anything that’s telling them what’s going on. Everything is just suddenly worse.” Mav gets choked up; he can hardly continue. “They uh- they said this is probably it. That we should say our goodbyes. That’s why I had the priest come in. When we talked about her final wishes a while ago, she made me promise she would get her last rites.”

Bradley tackles him in a hug before he finishes talking. They cry together, mourning the loss that hasn’t happened yet.

The four of them have been sitting in silence for hours, listening to the beep of the heart monitor, when Bradley speaks up from his post beside his mom. “What else does she want? I know she wants to be buried next to Goose, but what else? She didn’t tell me.”

“She wants yellow carnations in her arrangements. Her wedding band stays with her, just like Goose, but her engagement ring goes to you. She wants to be wearing that blue dress she wore when she first met your dad.”

“That’s it?”

“There are a few more legal things, like with the house and the cars, but that’s laid out in her will. She made me promise I’ll take care of you, which I was always going to do no matter what.”

And she made me promise I’ll never let you fly.

Mav doesn’t add that final promise to the list; it’s not the right time for that conversation. He’s not sure it’ll ever be the right time.

Carole can feel herself getting weaker, but today is a good day; she feels good. Strong.

“Peter Howard Mitchell! Listen to me, you stupid, stubborn, obnoxious jackass! We don’t have a lot of time before Bradley gets back, and we need to talk about this!”

Bradley had felt guilty about leaving to go to the movies with Tessa Richardson, but Carole had insisted - he’d had a crush on that girl for years. It was about time he had his first kiss. And she was 95% certain it was going to happen today. Her motherly instincts were tingling.

“I don’t want to talk about it, Carole! I’m sick of every conversation we have being about you dying!”

“You think I like talking about it? Knowing that I’m leaving behind my little boy?” She gets in his face, yelling with every ounce of strength she can summon. “You think I like knowing that my body is giving up? That I’m dying? I can feel it happening, Pete! I can feel myself drifting away! And nothing the doctors are doing is helping! I know that it’s scaring Bradley, scaring you, but it’s scaring me most of all!”

Maverick catches her, and they sink to the ground; she sobs in his arms. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you cry; I’m so sorry, Carole. What do you need me to do?”

“Bradley can’t fly.” She pulls back, wiping her eyes. “He can’t fly for the Navy, Pete. I know he wants to, but you can’t let him.”

“But Carole, it’s his dream to-”

“To die just like his father?” Her words shock him. “I love Nick more than anything, Pete, you know that. But do you know what I would do to have him here with us today? Do you realize I’ve lived three times as long without my husband than I did with him? It’s been fifteen years - almost sixteen. I only knew Nick for five, and we were only married for three before he was gone. I would do anything to have Bradley know his father.”

“Care…”

“You’ve been incredible, Mav. You’ve done your best to be a father to him; he loves you so much. I love you so much; you’re my best friend. But I've missed my husband every day for the last fifteen years. He was the love of my life, and I miss him so much my heart hurts. I’m not going to be here, but I can’t stand the thought of the same thing happening to Bradley. I won’t let that happen to my baby. So, you have to promise me, Pete. Promise me you won’t let him fly.”

They sit on the floor in silence, staring at each other. The internal debate roars inside Maverick, hurting his chest. He loves the Bradshaws more than anything. He would do anything for them. He still feels guilty about his best friend’s death, knows it was his fault, even if the investigation said he was innocent. The guilt of Goose being gone eats away at him, little by little each day.

Carole is right.

He can’t - he won’t - lose Bradley the same way.

“I promise I’ll do my best to keep him out of the air. But Carole, he’s almost an adult. Soon, there won’t be much I can do to control him. I can’t stop him from applying to the Academy or joining the Navy.”

“Yes, you can. Get Ice to pull some strings, indebt yourself to Viper. Do whatever you have to do. Do everything you can to protect him, Pete.” Her voice is cold and emotionless, knowing it will destroy her son, but at least he’ll be alive.

It was the one and only time they had talked about it, but every time Bradley excitedly talked about his future, Carole would look at him with this face that made Mav feel awful. It’s her request, but he was going to be the reason Bradley’s dreams were crushed.

Mav leans over in his chair, guilt and hopelessness consuming his body. The knowledge that his godson was about to be more like him in all the ways he never wanted.

Orphaned. Mother dying, with a broken heart, years after his father was killed while flying.

Denied entrance to the Naval Academy due to something beyond his control.

“She doesn’t want anything else?”

“No.”

It’s the last word spoken. A lie.

Slider and Ice spend the night just outside the door in some extra chairs an orderly had been kind enough to scrounge up. Mav shifts between standing at Carole’s side to hold her hand and sitting ramrod straight at the foot of her bed.

Bradley stays by his mom’s side the entire night, clutching her left hand. He plays with her wedding band, twisting it around her finger like he used to when he was little. He thinks about how different everything is going to be. He’s going to be alone a lot more now. He’s legally an adult, so when Mav gets deployed or transferred, there won’t be a need to scramble to make sure he’s taken care of. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do with the house or if it’s even his to worry about. Mav, Ice, and his mom had taken care of the legal stuff without him. He wonders if Slider would loan him some money so he can get those earrings. She won’t be able to appreciate them, but he still wants her to have them. It’s the last thing he’ll be able to do for her. They’ll go nice with her blue dress, he thinks. He sits there and thinks. He’s there the whole time.

He’s there, wide awake, when Carole takes her last breath at 3:14 AM on September 4th. He’s there when the doctor comes in to declare her dead; he shakes Bradley’s hand, giving him the first of the thousand condolences that will follow. He’s there when the nurse comes in to turn off the monitors and unhook the IVs; she gently asks if he wants to leave while she cleans his mom up, but he refuses. He doesn’t have a lot of time left before he’ll never see her again; he can’t waste any time. He’s there for another hour, trying to say his goodbyes through sobs. He’s there until his uncles drag him out, promising him that he’ll see her again before the funeral. He’s still there, mentally, when he goes to sleep at Uncle Tom’s house. He and Pete are sleeping over, neither of them ready to face the house.

He’s there three days later, shyly asking the funeral director if it would be too much trouble to change his mom’s earrings. When he asked Uncle Ron about the money, he put them both in the car, drove to the mall, and paid for the earrings without question. The two of them hugged for a long time before they went home. He’s there at the viewing, next to his mother’s casket for hours, numbingly accepting condolences and hugs from hundreds of people. The one bright spot is being reminded how many people loved his mom. How wonderful she was to everyone she met.

He’s there at the graveside service, the first to place a rose on the polished wood. He stays there once it ends, refusing to leave, watching as the casket is lowered and the hole is filled with dirt. He’s there to place a bouquet of yellow carnations, her favorite, on top of the fresh earth. He pats the dual gravestone, one half still blank, before he lets Mav pull him to the car. He looks back one last time, and as the sunshine dries his tears, he swears he can hear his parents' laughter in the wind.

As an adult, now with two dead parents and one estranged, he’s there every year that he’s not deployed. He clears away any weeds and leaves before placing a bouquet of yellow carnations on the gravestone that now bears two names. Sometimes, there’s a single red rose already there when he arrives. Those are the years he knows Mav beat him to saying hello. He’s there for hours at a time, sitting with his parents and eating a bag of trail mix with extra M&Ms added - Goose’s favorite.

The first year that he and Mary are together, he’s there alone. He trusts her implicitly, and she knows the whole story. He told her what happened with Mav and everything that followed; it was a conversation they had early on. But this is something too raw, too personal, to share so soon in a relationship. He’s spent so many years doing this by himself that he’s not sure how he would handle having another person with him. Even if it was someone he loves so much.

Mary understands.

“Of course, you understand, you’re perfect.”

“I’m not perfect, Bradley. I just care about your feelings.”

“You’re perfect for me.” He kisses her before she can protest. “Thank you for caring about me.”

The day of, she kisses him softly as he leaves, pushing a sandwich bag of trail mix into his hand. Her only ask is to tell her when he gets home safe if he needs space, letting him know that her house is always open if he doesn’t want to spend the night alone.

He spends that first year catching them up. Now that he’s stationed in San Diego, it’s easier to visit more often, but several things have happened since his last stop. Usually, he talks for a bit and then sits in silence, choosing to reminisce on the happy memories. This time, he spends most of the time talking. Telling his parents about Mav, the shenanigans of the Dagger Squad, about Mary. He tells them all about Mary. How much he loves her, how he hasn’t said it yet because it’s only officially been two months, how he’s pretty sure she can tell anyway. He goes on and on about her eyes, her kindness, her intelligence.

“I love her so much; I’m going to marry her.” He blurts it out, a small gasp following his declaration to the etched granite stone. It’s not the first time he’s had the thought, but it’s the first time he’s said it out loud. And now he can’t stop thinking about it.

Mary in a white dress with a veil sitting on her pretty brown hair, a gold band on her ring finger. The two of them committing themselves to each other in front of all their loved ones. Twirling her around the dance floor to their song, dipping her at the end to kiss her and make her blush. Everything that would follow. A house. A dog. A few kids. Diapers and dance recitals to gray hair and wrinkles.

“Holy shit… I’m going to marry her.” The breeze ruffles his hair, and he knows it’s his parents. “Don’t worry, Mom, I’ll make sure we’re married before I get her pregnant, unlike you two.”

He decides to stay the night at Mary’s, feeling better than he ever has on this day. He goes to find her the moment he enters the house, using the key she recently gave him. She’s on her office floor, organizing her bookshelf, when he presses himself against her, devouring her in a kiss. Bradley’s added weight throws her off balance, and the two of them topple over, sprawled in the paperbacks.

When he finally pulls back, he’s pleased to see that she’s flushed and her chest is heaving.

“I’m not complaining, but what was that?”

“I’ve never had someone to come home to after visiting them; I’ve always done it alone.” He talks into her neck, enjoying the way her fingers tighten in his hair when his lips brush her skin. “I’m just really thankful I have you.”

“Oh, Bradley…” Mary doesn’t know what to say. She loves this man so much, and she knows it’s too soon to say that, so she shows him. The night ends with a shower and papercuts in places where papercuts should never happen.

The day sneaks up on him the second year they’re together. They’ve been busy; between work, helping Jake with his surprise, and preparing to move in together, August went by in a blink. It leaves him with no time to mentally prepare.

Bradley jolts awake, sweat covering his temples and his heart thumping. It’s the worst nightmare he’s had in months. It was a twisted mess of awful moments. Some real, some imagined. Reliving his mother’s death but worse, almost dying on the uranium mission, losing Mary to cancer, same as his mom. He woke up just as a doctor was telling him she was gone and he wasn’t allowed to see her.

“No, sir, I’m sorry, but you can’t go back there. Her husband doesn’t want anyone else back there. You’ll have to wait for the funeral… if you’re even allowed in, asshole.”

He whips the covers off and trips his way to the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet before his dinner makes a return trip. The commotion wakes Mary, and she quickly makes her way to him, finding him laying on the floor, his shirt whipped into the tub.

His chest is so tight it hurts. He can’t believe he’s having a panic attack. He hasn’t had a full-on panic attack in years. There’s been anxiety, moments where he can’t easily catch his breath and his heart beating faster than it should, but nothing like this. He feels like he’s drenched in sweat, his heart is pounding, and he can’t breathe.

“Bradley? Look at me, sweetie.”

Mary.

“Can you look at me, Bradley?” He can hardly see through the tears. “I know it’s hard because you’re crying so hard, but look at me.”

It takes all his strength to turn his head, but he does it because he knows she’s worried.

“There you are. Okay, baby, I need you to breathe with me.”

He’s not exactly sure how she does it, but she helps him calm down. His body listens to her instructions before his brain realizes.

It takes a while, but he can breathe normally again. She helps him sit up, propping himself against the tub and letting his head fall back. He hears the sink run before there’s a soft touch on his shoulder.

“Gonna touch you, that okay?” He nods, appreciative of how considerate she is, always thinking of him.

Mary gently wipes his face, cleaning it of tears and sweat before brushing the washcloth over his arms and chest. It helps ground him, feeling more inside his body than before.

“What time is it?” Bradley rasps as she rinses the cloth.

“Late. Or early, depending on how you want to think about it.” She peeks out of the door, checking the time. Her face is somber when she comes back to him. “It’s 3:20, honey.”

“Twenty years… she’s been gone for twenty years.” He reaches for her, and she easily complies, straddling his thighs when he tugs her hand.

They sit in silence, wrapped tightly in each other’s arms.

“I had a nightmare.” He starts, answering her silent question. “It was her death and the uranium mission back-to-back, losing her and then him.”

She hums, encouraging him to continue. She doesn’t know the details of that mission - her clearance level is high but not that high - but she knows that he and Mav barely made it back. Both of them brushing hands with death multiple times.

They have nightmares. Less frequently now that they’re a few years down the road, but they still happen. Mav dreams that he doesn’t save them, that one of the bogeys gets them before Hangman reaches them. Bradley’s feature him missing the helicopter, having to watch Mav bleed out.

“Then it was you. You were sick. It was the same thing as Mom, uterine cancer. And I couldn’t even say goodbye. You married someone else, and I wasn’t allowed in.”

She takes a sharp breath. That’s new.

“I don’t want to lose you, Mary. I love you so much, I think it would kill me.”

“Oh, honey.” She cradles his face, forcing him to look at her. “You listen to me, Bradley Bradshaw. You are the best thing to ever happen to me. I love you more than anything. In two weeks, we’re going to be living together. When the time is right, we’re going to get married and have a family.”

She can't help but press a quick kiss to his mouth. “And I’m healthy. There’s no history of uterine or breast cancer in my family, and I just had my annual appointment last week. All the tests came back negative for bad things. Nothing is wrong. I'm totally healthy, okay? I love you, and I’m not going anywhere.”

“You can’t guarantee that.”

“You’re right, I can’t. We can’t control everything, and sometimes bad things happen. But I can promise you that I will do everything in my power to make sure I don’t ever leave you.”

“Thank you.” His voice is quiet and scratchy. “I know it’s hard with what I do, but I promise you’re my number one thought when I’m in the air; coming home safe to you is my top priority.”

“Now, I’m gonna cry, Bradley.” They both let out watery laughs. “You’re such a sweet man.”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too. Now let’s go back to bed; I need my beauty sleep before I meet your parents.” She pulls him up, and they fall asleep quickly, tucked together as the early morning light peeks through the curtains.

When they get to the cemetery the next afternoon, a red rose sits on the headstone. One step in front of him, Mary picks it up and brushes some leaves off the base. He watches as she places the flower back in its spot, plucking a few dandelions before she stands.

“There,” she says, brushing dirt off her hands, “that’s better.”

The wind picks up, twisting her long hair around, and he rolls his eyes.

“Yeah, Mom, I know. She’s very pretty. I’m working on proposing. We gotta do some stuff first, but it’s coming.” He mutters under his breath.

“What was that, honey?”

“Nothing, baby doll. Want to help me put the blanket down?” His hat blows off, and he scowls at the tree that’s nearby, smiling when he hears her muffled giggle.

Miss you, dad.

pls talk about ginger snaps i love hearing peoples thoughts on it, i am so mentally ill about this movie ;;;

LET'S GOOOO ok so i have so so so so so much to say

1.) one of the ways ginger snaps really succeeded for me in the way that some of the ways that other movies about the horrors of puberty and womanhood is that it's really willing to commit to the concept of the "benefits" (being perceived as desirable) are only barely masking terrible effects that make her cry in her sister's arms. many other movies of this genre just throw some blood and sharp teeth on a gal and call it a day but ginger snaps has a lot to say about how puberty is inherently horrifying. "i can't have chest hair, B, that's FUCKED" and the taping the tail to her leg being my favorite examples. The dichotomy of thrashing violently between trying to own it and have fun with it and being like "oh my god this is fucking horrible i'm having a mental breakdown"

2.) throughout the third act is a prevalent sense of "we almost made it" because the ideas these characters have are genuinely good ideas and the timing just gets fucked all to hell. I also love the detail that Brigitte kills her sister not as an act of self preservation but simply because she flinched with the wrong hand 3.) i love how layered the foreshadowing is throughout the movie. Nothing comes out of left field the whole movie! I love how mimi rogers does arts and crafts and is always surrounded by flowers and then when Brigitte obtains monkshood it's believable! i love when movies are creative enough to avoid falling into the deus ex machina trap! 4.) this movie has like really really lovely things to say about 5.) i love when horror movies are willing to examine the tragedy of all. So many slashers fall into the trap of being so focused on having a triumphant final girl moment at the end that they forget to express mourning and grief which is imo the best part of any good horror movie. When Brigette hills her sister it's not really a win, and she ends the movies in tears with her dying sister in her arms.

6.) on that note the codependency of a close sibling relationship is probably what sells the movie the most to me. "I'm furious with you and you're my nemesis right now but I would die for you is SO REAL. 7.) my favorite scene in THE whole movie is after ginger kills the popular girl when the parents get home and they just act like it's one of their staged death photos (ties back to the foreshadowing thing i was talking about earlier) I love when horror characters are smart and resourceful and creative.

8.) did you know there's no cgi in the whole movie not even touch up cgi it's ALL PRACTICAL EFFECTS AND MOST OF THEM STILL LOOK GOOD EVEN TODAY

9.) i love that they put the werewolf transformation in the back of a moving vehicle in the dark? muah muah muah muah

10.) every character feels thought through and well developed even if they don't really have a lot of screentime. like ginger snaps is a fairly melodramatic movie but they manage to feel like people through all of that the bully the mom etc

There's more but that's off thje top of my head :)
