Planning this Maki oneshot, wow, it always surprises me how simple the plot seems in my head, and how long I am able to stretch it unintentionally while I write lol

I LOVE books that do this. As long as everything I need to know for the story I'm reading is there, and context can be understood for what I NEED even if not for what I don't, then by all means please reference and say things I won't understand. It makes your world, your society, feel so much more lived in and real. Ugh I love it.

Also, kinda silly maybe but I love when writers make culture/society/alien/whatever specific idioms and it's so friggin rare. More people should do it! The great thing about idioms is you never have to stop the story and explain them, they're so easy to clarify in context. Anyway that's just a sidebar for me because I love idioms.

"I have all this cool, complicated wordbuilding I want to use, but I don't want to slow the narrative to a crawl by constantly stopping to explain stuff" so just don't. Use made-up words without defining them. Let things pass without comment. Have the narrative voice remark on exceptions to the setting's norms without ever explicitly establishing what those norms are. Treat it like you're writing the fourth book in a series and the reader already knows all this shit, and if they can't figure it out from context, fuck 'em.

these will be non-canon, but that also means that even while the main story's on hiatus, i'm open to receiving and answering these in the meantime! ive been seeing other blog interactions circle in the pokepasta ask/rp blog sphere a fair bit more lately and it seems like a lot of fun, esp now that we know what we're doing with mn a bit better. i am also planning/hoping to send a few out to other blogs as well ^^

WIP Wednesday (4/3) | Arsonist Neil / Firefighter Andrew AU (Part 130)

For the rest of the evening, Andrew merely sits around. Until he gets hungry again. Then he devours half a package of Oreos before going to bed early. He lies there, thinking about 10 and replaying their entire text conversation in his head over and over in his mind. He shouldn’t have told 10 to leave him alone, but he doesn’t deserve to be ignored. Does he?

Andrew dreams of fire that night. A huge, roaring blaze in the woods. A campfire out of control. But there’s no one else around.

No one at all.

When Andrew arrives at the station on Wednesday morning, he’s surprised to find Boyd standing on a step ladder outside of the bay doors trying to hang up a banner of some sort. Andrew takes a step back to look up at it, perturbed. It reads, ‘Welcome kids!’ with fanciful rainbow lettering and cutesy smiley faces. Renee’s work no doubt.

“What is this?” Andrew asks, startling Matt so bad he nearly tumbles off his stool. He grabs for the edge of the building to steady himself before turning to look at Andrew, free hand over his heart.

“Oh shit, man. You almost killed me,” he says, winded. Then he finally gets the banner hung up— just crooked enough to get on Andrew’s nerves.

“What is this?” Andrew repeats. “Which kids are we welcoming?”

“Uh… I’m just in charge of hanging this up,” Matt says, holding up his hands like Andrew’s got a gun on him. “Talk to Renee.”

He was right.

“Walker,” Andrew says, stomping upstairs to the firefighters’ home away from home. He steps into their faux little living room. “Renee?”

She pops in from the kitchen with a smile on her face. “Hey, Andrew. Did you call me?”

She knows he did. Andrew points at her. “What kids are coming here?” 

“A group of third graders.”

“Allow me another query,” Andrew says slowly. “Why are they coming here?”

“One of my church friends asked if we could give her class a tour. I talked to Wymack and Dan about it and they thought it was a good idea."

I just need to inform you that Kingdom Come is one of my favorite things right now. Every time it updates, I basically drop everything I’m doing to go read it. I also love how you draw Zoro and Sanji.
