John Egan was a normal boy. He was born on a normal sort of day to a normal couple. He had a younger sister and a detached house and a family dog. His dad coached the little league team and his mom made the best cherry pie in the state. He wasn’t an especially good student but he wasn’t a bad one. He was a little loud but it was nothing out of the ordinary and he always had plenty of friends. The child who smiles out of his family photos is a normal, healthy boy with gaps in his teeth and rosy cheeks from playing outside. He can be seen beaming with his new puppy, on Christmas morning, while giving his sister a piggyback and after hitting his first ever home run. 

Everything about his life in Woodsboro, California was as normal as could be. By all accounts none of this should ever have happened. In a sane world, perhaps it wouldn’t have. It would shock the community to its core. Everyone would clutch at their chests and say that he was such a vibrant, happy boy from such a nice family. 

They just never saw it coming. 

Maybe they should have looked a little bit harder.
