Ongoing Series - Thai

Two Worlds (Thurs IQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - It would be great if we got the alternative romance with dead Kram from Tai’s perspective (JBL style.) Still I like this show. It’s a little bit like I Feel You Linger in the Air only with a love triangle. And while I'm not a fan of triangles as a general rule, I don’t mind it here because the set up is clever. Wayu and  ao are fun sides too. It sure is moving very quickly, which I like. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. But that’s normal for me with this kind of Thai drama. 

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 4 of 8 - They are extremely sappy boyfriends. I love that mom has a secret gf. Could we please have more of them? The love triangle sides are ridiculous, but I do like that it’s all out in the open. I also like they are actually addressing the complicated parental dynamics of owning a sex club. Honestly, I think Khem should have to be a host too. Learn him the right way, girl!

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 9 of 12 - It’s good, I like the fallout and them actually having to deal with crazy fans and past relationships. They’re so good at communicating it’s kind of a pleasure to watch them suffer through external pressures, because I have faith that they can make it through.

To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand grey) ep 6 of 8 - They are such cute puppy dads and so clearly meant to be together, the fact that they aren’t is just frustrating. The fight thing was stupid. And not a whole lot happened... plus singing. I’m getting fatigued with this one. 

1000 Years Old ep 7 of 12 - Did I miss something happening, or did nothing happen? 

Kiseki Chapter 2 (Sun iQIYI) ep 2 of 6 - It’s so boring, there’s so much guitar playing, and it got weirdly voyeuristic (in a very much not sexy way). I’m totally out. DNF

Close Friend Season 3: Soju Bomb! (Weds iQIYI) ep 3 of 6 - I can’t tell if this is trying to be a BL Romancing the Stone, or a BL Hangover, or both. The problem with situational comedy is it must be both situational and comedic, not just option one. The problem with calling something BL, is that it must be BL. This show got 1 of 3 claims correct. 33% is not a passing grade. DNF 

Honestly, it's the HANDS with these two. They do beautiful beautiful things with their hands. If you're one of those hands-obsessed BLabies you should be watching LIBTSTA!

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues Youku YouTube & Viki) ep 6 of 11 - So the worst finally happened. The mountain of pain has fallen down upon us. And now, hopefully in the second half things get better for our boys. But what a rough ride. Normally, this is not my style of BL, but everyone is doing such a gorgeous job with it, I can’t fault it… except that it hurts. The red thread symbolism was elegantly done. I’d like to hope we get a reunion in the next one, but knowing this style of series they’re gonna draw it out. There's gonna be a more pain first.

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - Those fuck me puppy dog eyes were perfectly executed. I would not have been able to resist either. Gosh they are so damn cute. This is a great show.

Jazz for Two (Korea Gaga/grey) eps 1-2 of 8 - This comes from the Shoulder to Cry On team so I'm scared, but this one is all actors* not idols so maybe they'll be braver. Boy howdy does it have a fantastic opening sequence. Also the lead is fucking adorable. Mr Broody McBroodypants is cute too. Korea sure loves “pretty but broken.” On the JBL end of the spectrum, is everyone in love with their siblings? That’s weird. The dining room scene was painful. All in all, it's good, I'm intrigued. Let's see how you go little show.

I stand absolutely corrected the lead is a member of NEWKIDD (in my defense I'd never heard of them until Build Up last month). I did recognize him from To My Star because at the time I thought he was too pretty to be only a side character.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) ep 10 fin - Again there was overuse of previous footage and maudlin navel-gazing grief over something we knew was going to happen. So I didn’t really feel much emotional connection to the drama. 7 year time gap.? t was a cute reunion but the moral quandary never really got resolved. I don’t know how to rate this, I’m not sure I will ever watch it again, so that is a big mark against it.

There’s nothing objectively wrong with this BL except how upsetting it is because of the foundational pygmalion story - grown man falls in love with an android who is basically both his slave and, by maturity level, a child. Yet that premise is crystal clear from the get go, so we watch it eyes open. The actors are cute, the romance sweet, the physical chemistry on point (of course, it’s Taiwan) and yet I was left ultimately unsettled by the concept, content, and plot. 7/10 

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 7 of 8 - I'm so ready for this to be over, and for Gaga to have something good on. Soon please?

Graduation Countdown (Taiwan YouTube) - It's too much to ask me to keep up with 2 minute verticals, I don't have that kind of TikTok endurance training. Waiting to binge.

A Secretly Love (Thai Sat WeTV grey) 10 eps - I watched the first ep but grey is too much work for this inferior of a show. I may pick up and binge if it gets distribution but for now, it gets a DNF from me. KimCop might have held this crap together but Kim without Cop? No thank you.

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school. Not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing.

Tangential to the genre

Other side of the tracks grumpy/sunshine pair who fall deeply in love but, of course, baby boy idol can't date. Boyband but from GMMTV? Control your singing and I'm game.

3/31 The Next Prince (Thai ????) 12 eps - trailer. ZeeNew in a fantasy/historical set in a palace where Zee plays a knight and Nu a prince - YES PLEASE. (Apparently this is just the pilot, not the start of the actual show, see comments.)

4/1 Love is like a Cat (Korea ????) 12 eps - This completed filming Aug 2022(!) which means there have been serious problems with post-production. This is another of Silkwood's Korean+Thai colab projects. Mew Suppasit plays a rookie film star, called the Cat Prince (for his cold arrogance) who goes up against a charismatic puppyish animal daycare director (JM of JUST B). There is a side romance (love triangle?) with a veterinarian. Geonu of JUST B is also in the cast. Dual languages.

4/3 We Are (Thai GMMTV YouTube iQIYI) 12 eps - University ensemble BL featuring PondPhuwin, WinnySatang, AouBoom, MarcPawinPoon - basically the good kind of messy gay friendship group (so more My Engineer and less Only Friends). Looks a bit like the Kiss series but everyone is queer. I'm IN!

4/11 Living With Him AKA Kare no Iru Seikatsu (Japan ????) 10 eps - Kindly Ryota goes off to uni only to find his new roommate is his childhood bestie, Kazuhito. Kazuhito doesn’t have a girlfriend and Ryota tries to help him figure out why, they fall in love along the way. Same director as Old Fashion Cupcake.

4/11 Gray Shelter AKA Gray Currents (Korea ????) 4 eps - SooHyuk is only just surviving and reunites with YoonDae, an old friend. They end up living together. One of the leads is played by Choco of Choco Milk Shake.

4/18 At 25:00, in Alaska AKA 25 Ji, Akasaka de (Japan Gaga - may not be global) 10 eps - Yuki lands his first starring role in a BL drama alongside superstar Asami (previously his senior at uni). Said superstar suggests they form a sham relationship until filming concludes. As they actually begin to fall in love, the spotlight begins to burn.

Seriously? You're killing me with these titles, boys.

4/26 My Stand-In (Thai iQIYI) 12 eps - adaptation of Chinese novel "Professional Body Double" by Shui Qiang Cheng. Stars Up (Lovely Writer) and Poom (Bake Me Please) directed by the same team as KP (not a recommendation IMHO - my biggest criticism of that show was the clashing directing styles). This one looks well complicated, lemme try: Joe is a stuntman for famous actor Tong. Joe falls in love with Ming but Ming sees Joe as nothing more than a Tong-replacement. After learning this horrible truth, Joe dies. Joe then wakes up in the body of another man also named Joe. He manages to rebuild the same life as before—with the same people eventually re-meeting Ming. Ming wants Joe back but Joe doesn't understand why. But Ming seems to know what's going on and wants to give him some kind of explanation.

I'm exhausted just trying to describe the plot.

the ship consists of two ‘bestfriends’.

satoru gojo and suguru geto.

let’s start with our first piece of evidence..

AO NO SUMIKA’S LYRICS ☆

now, if you hadn’t known already, ao no sumika interprets or resembles gojo and geto’s relationship.

let us look at some suspicious.. lyrics.

“it’s like a quiet love”

or

静かな恋のような (in kanji)

now, some people might say:

“platonic love exists!”

“what if he means platonic love?”

well,

that can’t be right.. let us look at japanese culture, and the kanji used for love.

since, in the west, we really only have one word to describe love. which is.. love.

but..

not for japan!

恋 - this kanji right here is prounounced; koi.

and.. koi is only used when referring to romantic or passionate love.

here’s another ao no sumika lyric that has something to do with romance!

“even if i’ve come to know your scent, diffferent from mine, in the depths of eternity left behind”

knowing or remembering someone’s scent is considered romantic in most cultures!

since, if you were to write a song about a bestfriend,

you wouldn’t write a lyric that contains stuff about knowing their scent, right?

that would seem weird, if you only love them platonically.

DECEMBER 24TH (manga spoilers ahead, skip if needed.)

suguru geto died on december 24th, most of us know that.

satoru gojo died on december 24th, some of us know that.

now, okay, dying on the same day is.. kind of romantic if you look at it that way i guess.

but, it is not about that fact,

it is about the day they both died!

they both died on december 24th,

now, if you don’t know,

december 24th is the most romantic day in the year in japanese culture. it is basically the valentine’s day equivalent in japan.

if you were a mangaka/author trying to hint that two characters are inlove, killing them both on the most romantic day of the year would do it.

now, onto our next shred of evidence.

KFC ‘BREAKUP’

the infamous KFC “breakup”.

a lot of people know about the KFC scene, where geto and gojo parted ways infront of a KFC.

now, i am not going to say that KFC is the most romantic food in japan or anything..

but it is commonly enjoyed by lovers on december 24th.

yes, i am saying that their “breakup” taking place infront of a KFC is romantic.

also, the fact that gege modeled the kfc in this scene from a real life KFC restaurant is kinda suspicious.

you don’t just accidentally draw a perfect real life KFC restaurant and paste it on your manga, do you?

GOJO’S SILENT VOICE IN JJK 0

now i am sure that everyone knows that there is a scene where gojo says something to geto,

which was never revealed, by the way,

in jjk 0.

now, i am not going to claim that gege told me himself that what gojo said was romantic but..

gojo’s english voice actor said that he can’t say what it was, and that it was localized so it would be understood in english.

but he said that it was three words.

now, there are a lot of three words you can say to a bestfriend.

many people might think;

“but! what if it’s; ‘you’re my friend’??”

“or ‘this is it’??”

“or even ‘we’ll meet again’!”

but.. the thing is..

the light novel of jjk 0 confirmed that what gojo said was;

A. really embarassing, and

B. something neither has said to the other ever in their time together.

so, the only reasonable sentence gojo would say was simply;

“i love you.”

let us move on to our next evidence.

LGBTQ+ IN JAPAN

some might ask, “well, why did gege not confirm this despite everything you just said?”

well..

japan, gege’s hometown is..

homophobic, or hostile to gay people.

insert gasp GIF.

in the west, it’s easy to get away with something like: being gay.

but in japan, it’s so much more different.

it would be a much bigger controversy in japan if you are gay.

gay people are either fetishized, made fun of / bullied, or just completely hidden away by japanese people.

there’s a case like this, where an anime called Yuri on Ice had two male characters with an engagement and they had to label it as a bizzare friend relationship (?)

and, as far as i know, MAPPA dropped it without completing the series.

next example, is adventure time.

a series that surely, you are familiar with.

adventure time characters: marceline and bubblegum were supposed to have a romantic relationship early on in the series.

but, they had to wait until the finale in order to finally show them hugging and a small kiss.

because they fear that they might not be able to show the finale if they did it before.

and, steven universe.

steven universe wanted this big, gay wedding in a grand episode where there were also a lot of plot in.

cartoon network kept warning them that the show will not be good for them financially, and will also go horribly in eastern countries.

however, steven universe doubled down.

they forced the episode to air, so it is either

A. show the episode to eastern countries exposing viewers to LGBTQ+ or..

B. not let the episode air in those countries, leading to mass confusion due to a large portion of plot in said episode

and, keep in mind, the staff that told them that airing the episode is going to be a bad idea, is gay. (as far as i know.)

so, if gege were to reveal that satoru gojo, the most popular character in modern shonen history, was gay!?

that would result in possibly:

A. more people trying to figure out gege’s real identity, immense backlash and boycotting

B. gege losing his job and career

C. Jujutsu Kaisen being dropped by MAPPA, similar to Yuri on Ice

or

D. all of the above.

best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2023 (and some I’m still looking forward to seeing)

A League of Nobleman (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on AppleTV | watch on Viki | watch on bilibili | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "The Mystery of Zhang Guo" (张公案) by Da Feng Gua Guo (大风刮过) starring Jing BoRan, Song WeiLong, Hong Yao, Guo Cheng and Wang Duo. Definitely gay, but in like a very focused, we-have-a-mystery-to-solve way. Loved the acting and the plot; cannot believe people actually gave Song Weilong shit for his acting in this drama. He was aMAzing. The downside is that the editing grew progressively sloppier as the drama progressed, and although majority of the visuals were very satisfying, I never realized how crappy the quality of the light was until I tried gifing some of the scenes. The upside is Jing BoRan holding kittens. Enough Said. 7/10

The Blood of Youth (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "Shao Nian Ge Xing" (少年歌行) by Zhou Mu Nan (��木楠) starring Li HongYi, Liu XueYi and Ao RuiPeng. Love this goddamn drama. I adopted the entire cast within the first 3 episodes and then I spent the next 37 terrified that half of them would get killed off. There’s def some major character death in this drama my chickens, so keep that in mind (and not a canonical death either, from what I understand). Anyway, this is my fave genre by far so I’m never really picky, but this drama is exhilarating and gorgeous from beginning to end. Highly recommend. 9/10

New Life Begins (watch on iQIYI | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Qing Chuan Ri Chang" (清穿日常) by Duo Mu Mu Duo (多木木多) starring Bai JingTing and Tian XiWei. Just sweet and fluffy. The plot is easy and devoid of complexities, but very satisfying nonetheless. The acting is definitely on another level. The entire cast has bonkers chemistry, and it’s about time someone made good use of Bai Jingting’s comedy potential. One of the top 5 easy viewing dramas on my rewatch list.  8/10

The Legendary Life of Queen Lau (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Huang Hou Liu Hei Pang" (皇后刘黑胖) by Ge Yang (戈鞅) starring Li JiaQi and Li HongYi. Loved this. Although it doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, this is basically a comedy from beginning to end. Not gonna lie, I mainly gave this a go for Li Hongyi, but it’s hard to even notice him when Li Jiaqi is in the room. There’s no shame in being overshadowed by superior talent :) 7/10

(yeah, after all this, I rewatched Nirvana In Fire again)

Under the Microscope (watch on Apple TV | watch on Bilibili | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from the novel "Xian Wei Jing Xia De Da Ming" (显微镜下的大明) by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸) starring Zhang RuoYun and Wang Yang. Continuously impressed by Zhang RuoYun’s skills. This drama is 90% grit and tension. Drool-worthy visuals. Interesting plot. Sound mixing that gives me a Mo Ran style boner. Make your friends watch it and they will hate you. 9/10

Till The End of The Moon (watch on YouTube | watch on Apple TV | watch on Viki) Adapted from the web novel "Hei Yue Guang Na Wen BE Ju Ben" (黑月光拿稳BE剧本) by Teng Luo Wei Zhi (藤萝为枝). Starring Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu. This was so breathtakingly gorgeous. The chemistry between the actors, the visuals, the special effects, the costumes, everything is stunning in this drama. The romance is by no means original, but still manages to draw you in. Absolutely worth watching at least once. 8/10

oh this city is so pretty vulcan? yah oh pretty ship design they do the environments and ships suich glorious justice in this show lmao shirt that says "disco" on it only trekkies would understand ;) man this will be so interesting to see burnham rise to captaincy also aw i love her smile dang the way the phasers dissolve its targtes aww these horizontal lens flares gets me in the AOS lorca might have been happier were he born a klingon. oh my god this hologram animation was fucking GORGEOUS oh my god i LOVE the detail in the costuems gorgeous i like the overall tone of DISCO - but i think it gets nearer perfected in SNW injection why wow suicide bomber. spock. where are you. so much sarek. ugh the cooking up to it is just ughh oh my god space is gorgeous ugh this intro pleaseeeee

its very simple feeling but also so effective its so classy. sylvia. so brave. these meld sequences are so god burnham is so beautiful is that amanda. i am so confused what in the world what the fuck is happening that was such a weird meld scene mmm i feel like it couldve been cut a little differently imo "humanity's potential" and then she eventually meets spock though right like… oh my god what the HELL HAPPENS???? oh my god i want to take my time with this series but also want to just binge all of it i kinddddd of dont like the cinematographic style in the show

it feels so fast? i feel like we dont get a lot of time to just lets things settle and sink? could just be me but i still feel the pacing is a little odd in this series so far you break your fortune cookies like that lorca? messy. handcracker lorca over here. i love how clear saru's voice is through the prosthetics ok stamets. ok. we get it. we know what you like.

lorca's butt. that is all. this conversation is kind of cute when burnham lorca and stamets are all talking about sending DISCO into a nebulae hahah ugh space travel in humanity. imagine. ugh they did the composite editing so well in this. one thing though i LOVE the colourgrading its so saturated sometimes even overblowing the colours - i aint mad though in this case after many, many, many. episodes of trek that are in that old washed-out film (minus the remasters) - this is absolutely visually DELECTABLE. i feel like DISCO could better use a little bit more steady flatter moments in pacing

the show just never stops feeling so… antsy?? a little too much shakey cam ohhh fascinating that facial accessory in the exact position of hte meld spots since this is all retconned to the prime trek universe, it just makes me wonder how fleshed out a modern TOS would be from all this. at least i mean a "modern TAKE" ofc. ugh the urge to draw more spock in sex;y ass everyday wears on vulcan…. cough cough ok ok sry. ooo this is so odd to see all this happen its a big move to try to retcon such a major character into sarek's life i wonder how burnham's story ends. i mean. i know s5 is in the making j- but honestly where is this all GOing… and how does it relate to future Captain Pike and future First Science Officer Spock… i like lorca's smile. his dead eyes ugh. is this the space sexy time - i dont think i need it like this rn bruh not sure if im into lorca lorca time i cant lie the feeling of this series is kind of off i wonder if its because of the actors' delivery?

or maybe even more specificially sonequa's delivery?? idk why it feels a litttttle off since the first episode she feels like a more fresh actor i meant to say this since the first episode but i just wanted to see HE SAID SPOCK AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA but yeah sonequa (burnham's actor) feels a bit on the fresher side as an actor. not meaning to insult no no. she just feels younger/not as matured yet as an actor theres just soemthing slightlyyy amiss in her acting im not sure ugh these colours interesting bit of lore ugh this calligraphy wow lorca nice one u keep that under ur pillow ok im very intersted to see lorca's lore though hes a strong actor so far as well curious ok i dont like the cut-to-cut style of the filiming in this show its too whiplash fast no time to really breathe but more so no time to really just take in and appreciate the scene, if that makes sense? its almost disorienting i wish it was steadier SNW definitely did not feel like this in its filming style it was steadier, as i think is necessary imo

that was so fast. burnham is grateful to serve under a captain like lorca? where did THAT come from? it feels so sudden?? and feels very un-burnham. ok guys, its odd cuz it almost feels like Seven-of-Nine had more… life than Burnham?? these scenes arent allowed to mature and soak- why?? why do they pace it like t his? it almost feels like im seeing the fact thers a thousand words in this book, but the pages are turning before i can digest its story? its like there are sectillions of water droplets moving together, but yet are somehow not allowed to flow as the river it should be. thats what this show feels like. its so odd. i think its less that there is an "oddness of delivery" from the axtors, but more so the cinematography is just so flighty and impatient. and some is bc of a not-too-terribly-fantastic-screenplay visuals are def the best this show has demonstrated so far to me in its attributes i almost read "United Klingon" as "United Kingdom" lmao Saru and his twiddly fingers ugh i love his face his fucking heels though his heel feet heel stilt feet.

mmm captain battle-happy lorca. ok - well, i think this show so far couldve been filmed a little better - or at least editing direction couldve been different and more lax. if even a tad. its almost frustrating sometimes how WHIPLASH it is. a great example is that lorca x cornwell scene like you can almost acctually SEE shots that are so unnecessarily cut. i dont really like it - the camera-cut editing style takes away from the experience imo. it also makes certain deliveries worse than they are from actors' performances cuz the pacing is so whack sometimes even visually and audially. its still only season 1. ill see.

Summary: Okay this is my first time writing anything incest, thank you HOTD, and of course it has to be Targaryens ahh but the actors portraying Aemond and Helaena, there's just something there 👀 and I'm for it! I'm getting my feels out by writing my head canons on what happened between scenes so here you go : )

Helaena walked up the stairs quickly with her arms wrapped around her. She walked past her brothers, mother, and even her father who was being helped by two knights of the Kingsguard. She wanted to be back in her room and was a few steps away when her mother called for her, “Helaena!”

Helaena stayed in place, not bothering to turn around. She felt her mother’s hands on each shoulder. “I’m so sorry you had to see that—” Alicent started to say but didn’t finish as her daughter shivered from her touch and moved away from her mother, swatting her hands away from her shoulders.

“Don’t!” Helaena warned as she shook her head at her mother with tight lips and walked inside her rooms.

Aemond watched the exchange and felt helpless and frustrated he couldn’t comfort her. He balled his hands into fists at his sides and took one step toward Helaena’s room just as his mother pushed Aegon towards the room. “Go comfort your wife,” Alicent said as she gave her eldest son a stern look before turning away from both sons and walking toward the Knights carrying her husband.

Aemond didn’t take a step further as Aegon sighed before entering the room. He watched his older brother with a pang of envy. He made a humming sound and walked away.

Helaena was checking her various collections of bugs and insects when she heard Aegon behind her, “Hel, are you okay?” He asked, scratching the back of his head.

She rolled her eyes and then turned to face him. “There is no need for your comfort, Aegon. I will be fine--I’m just a bit shaken,” she whispered those last words, hoping he did not hear.

Aegon sighed again, then admitted, “That was a horrid sight. I admit I did not think that would happen to Ser Vaemond.”

She nodded. “Agreed.”

As if Aegon did not hear her, he continued, “I understand how the fairer sex would react to such a scene, not being in a war and—”

“You have never been to war,” Helaena retorted.

Aegon scoffed. “No, but I’m a man and did not flinch earlier.”

Helaena turned around and said without a second thought, “Aegon—Shut up.”

Aegon gave a half-smile then, surrendered by raising his hands. He did feel a bit of concern for his wife. He then suggested, “Do you want me to bring in the children?”

She shook her head. “They are napping—You would know that if you took more time to visit them,” she muttered. She turned her back and said, “I want to be alone--Leave me, please.” 

“Fine.” He shrugged and walked away.

Aemond stood behind a stone pillar and waited until he finally saw Aegon slam Helaena’s door behind him and walked down the hall to his rooms.

It wasn’t a minute before Helaena heard her door open once more. Staring at a drawing she had not finished, she said with annoyance, “Aegon, I said I wanted to be alone.”

“Gaomagon ao nūmāzma issa hae sȳrī?” Do you mean me as well? Aemond asked.

His softer tone of voice always brought those butterfly feels in her stomach. She lifted her head in surprise. She quickly said, “No.”

Aemond walked to stand right in front of her. He gently placed his hand underneath her chin. He brushed her bottom lip with his thumb, and in response, she kissed his thumb lovingly and removed his eye patch. His sapphire eye stared at her. She gently touched it with her index finger. She then traced the scar that started above his left brow down to his cheek.

Her touch made Aemond’s heart beat faster. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer to him. He felt her breasts against his chest. He just wanted to hold her forever, feeling her heart beat near his. He whispered near her left ear, “Nyke shifang skoros īlon ūndan isse se rōvēgrie hall istan olvie nykeā shock. Issi ao feeling sȳrkta, jorrāelagon?” I understand what we saw in the Great Hall was quite a shock. Are you feeling better, love?

Helaena looked up at his eye, “Nyke, rūsīr ao kesīr.” I am with you here. She said truthfully, still wrapped in his embrace. She raised her lips to his and kissed him passionately.

Aemond returned her kiss with as much enthusiasm. His tongue danced with hers. He cupped her cheek with his hand, caressing her cheek with his thumb. He heard her moan, making him smile against her lips. He broke the kiss and felt her breath dance with his. He whispered against her lips, “Gaomagon ao gīmigon skoros ao gaomagon naejot issa skori ao moan?” Do you know what you do to me when you moan?

Helaena chuckled, looking at his eye staring intently into hers. She kissed his lips before she answered, “Bona's skoro syt nyke gaomagon ziry.” That’s why I do it.

Aemond gave her a knowing grin as he started to bend down. She placed her hands on his shoulders as he slowly lifted her dress. Before he could put his head between her legs, a loud cry for Helaena was heard in the next room. Aemond sighed and dropped the dress back down. He rested his cheek against her stomach. “The children are up from their nap,” he noted.

Helaena half-smiled and ran her fingers through his silky hair. “Sounds like it,” she said in agreement.

Aemond looked up at her and said, “Lets leave the Red Keep for a while.” 

“Where do you suggest?” She asked, still running her fingers through his hair.

He grinned and said, “Lets Fly.”

“Mummy! Look, I’m flying!” Jaehaerys said with utter excitement as he lifted his arms in the air.

“That’s right, darling,” Helaena said with a chuckle. She reassured the swaddling clothing she wore was tight around her son and herself. Out of her mouth, before she could process it she said, “In dark and stormy skies begin the dance of...dragons,” she said that last word with hesitance. She briefly thought of her earlier dream. Before she thought anything more, she was distracted as her son lifted his arms again and laughed. She smiled at her son and then looked at Dreamfyre's brilliant sapphire blue scales. Ahead she caught a glimpse of the mighty Vhagar flying towards them.

Dreamfyre roared softly as she and Vhagar passed each other. The older dragon responded and turned to fly side by side.

Helaena looked over and smiled as she saw Aemond with similar swaddling clothing, Jaehaera sitting in front of him, lifting her hands too. She saw Aemond looking in her direction with a grin. He lowered his head and spoke to his... niece. 

“Mummy, look at me!” She yelled and squealed in excitement, raising her arms and closing her eyes.

Helaena smiled at her daughter, so small, on the largest dragon in the world. Aemond looked her way and kept her stare. They smiled knowingly at each other.

Their dragons continued to fly side by side as they flew over Blackwater Bay—Their wings would teasingly touch the water and soar further up in the skies. Helaena held her son to her as he laughed and clapped his hands. She tousled his hair before she kissed the top of his head. She looked aside and admired the scene before her: Jaehaera with Aemond, her little hands held his hand on her tummy as his other was steering. She sighed with relief as she steered Dreamfyre through more skies, feeling at peace. She heard Vhagar follow behind.

Later, both Jaehaera and Jaehaerys were fast asleep in their beds. Helaena loved seeing her children sleeping without any care in the world.

“Now, they will dream of flying in the sky.” She said, as felt Aemond’s arm around her waist, pulling her to him.

“That they are,” he assured her. He took her hand and led her to the next room, closing the door behind them. He quickly turned and stared at Helaena with adoration before he surprised her and sweetly kissed one side of her neck, nibbling at her skin, then running the tip of his tongue on her warm skin.

Helaena leaned against him, feeling instant pleasure. “Careful—I—I don’t want a mark, like last time.”

“Skoros lo nyke jaelagon naejot dīnagon nykeā mark va ao?” What if I want to place a mark on you? Aemond teased as his lips slowly kissed up her neck.

Helaena turned around, stopping his kisses and wrapped her arms around his neck, eyeing him with a mischievous look. “Nyke shall mark ao ēlī.” I shall mark you first. She countered, and before he could respond, she pressed her soft lips against his.

One of his hands rested at the base of her neck while the other caressed the soft material of her golden dress over her arse. He gently squeezed, making her moan as she continued to kiss him. Aemond grinned against her lips. He sought entrance with his tongue, and she gave it. One of her hands gently slid from his shoulder down to his chest. Her fingers traced the fine leather of his doublet as she felt herself lean into him, her lower half seeking his. Instantly she felt him hard down there. She moaned again as her hand slid down—

Aemond chuckled, gently stopping her hand with his. “Tolī, issa jorrāelagon.” Later, my love, he whispered into her hair. Instead of giving him a retort, Helaena nodded in agreement. “We should head down to the feast,” he said with a sigh. He held out his arm for her. She took his arm as they walked outside of her room.

She nudged his side with her shoulder. “Are you not excited to see more of our family?”

Aemond made a humming sound before he shrugged. “Sure,” he said with a half-grin.

Helaena rolled her eyes and said, “Oh yes, you sound very convincing.” She caressed his arm but quickly put it down as Aegon walked toward them with a dark glass goblet in hand.

Aemond shook his head and murmured, “Already with a drink.”

“Ah, there is my lady wife and brother,” Aegon sneered at both of them before taking a sip from his goblet. He retrieved a wooden object from his pocket. He handed it to Helaena. “From Grandsire.”

“Me?” She reluctantly let go of Aemond’s arm as she studied the object.

Aegon scoffed. “Of course, you.”

Aemond eyed his brother with disdain. Aegon looked up at him and smirked. “Come, lets get this over with,” he grumbled, leading the way to the dining room.

Before following her husband, Helaena looked up at Aemond and whispered, “Ziry iksos okay.” It’s okay. Her hand found his, and she gently squeezed. She whispered in his ear, “Ao issi se mēre nyke jorrāelagon, va moriot.” You are the one I love, always.

Aemond gave her a quick grin and nodded. Helaena stared intently into his eye and smiled as she felt herself let go of his hand. At the last second, his fingers grasped hers. He traced her hand with his fingers. As she started to walk away, their fingers lightly touched before they broke apart.

Yes or no on Star Trek AoS?

Ooh thanks for asking!

I'm kind of in the middle on it--I don't hate it, but I don't love it as much as I love the original Treks. As a reboot, it did its job and got a younger generation interested in Star Trek, but as a piece of Star Trek media it left some things to be desired, mostly because it wasn't telling any truly new stories. (That's the issue I have with Abrams as a director: he tends to just recycle stories that have already been told and spit them back out with a shiny lens flare or twelve.)

Starting with some positives: I think the goal of AoS was different than that of TOS, and it accomplished it well enough. The original series spoke to a lot of specific ideas and themes and really tried to explore different concepts in depth; AoS took a much more general approach, focusing on the hopeful core of Star Trek--how connection transcends the boundaries we put between us, and how there is always a way to move forward and overcome. I think the decision to focus on this more universal aspect of Trek helped AoS reach a wider audience and makes it an effective introduction to Star Trek. I started with those movies, and while they didn't give me a good sense of what TOS would be like, they (and especially Leonard Nimoy's Spock) did get me invested in the universe and eager to learn more.

I also do love how they involved Nimoy's Spock across all three movies (really the first and third). I felt that they were trying to be respectful of the original material in that way, and the fact that Leonard signed off on Zachary Quinto's Spock means a lot given how vigorously Nimoy defended Spock's characterization when he was playing him. And, in bringing him in as Spock Prime, they were able to more clearly differentiate their alternate interpretation of Spock from the original (which is an important distinction for people who never watched TOS to understand), while drawing connections between them that help the fans of the original content accept this new interpretation.

That being said, I think essentially rehashing the older Star Trek movies but with new actors didn't really help the audience feel that the other characters are truly their own unique individuals and connect to them on that basis. There are significant divergences from how they were written in TOS, but new Trekkies may not know that (leading to misunderstandings about who these characters really are), and older Trekkies may feel that this is simply a bungled attempt at adapting Trek for a new generation (because they didn't represent the characters authentically). Even with Spock, who does have a more distinct foil in Spock Prime, there's something about him that feels shallower than the original: the films rely on the prior depth of characterization the originals had to fill in the gaps in the newer versions, but that makes it harder for the audience to emotionally resonate with them. This particularly bothers fans of the originals, because the new films seem to lack the heart of the older content; really, it's because they're trying to borrow that heart instead of making their own (which they can only do because of how similar the storylines are).

Also, I think the AoS films did a disservice to the connection between Jim and Spock because they were worried about fans interpreting them as queer (insert bitter comment about the cut amulet dialogue here...). Regardless of what the specifics of the relationship between those two characters were, their bond was a crux point of the original series and is what drew many people to the Star Trek universe. Minimizing that caused the films to lack a lot of the emotional aspects that the original Trek had, and dampened the effects of scenes like Kirk's death somewhat, since the connection between these two characters was nowhere near as established as it was in Wrath of Khan or other original material. (The scene was still emotional, but as mentioned above it had a more general focus--it portrayed the human experience of fear and bravery well, but without the strong bond between Jim and Spock, the specific terror and grief and rage of losing someone you love was lost. That's why the original "Khaaaaaan!!!" feels much more earned, whereas the AoS one is really just referential.)

All of this I think could have been resolved if, instead of redoing what was already done, Abrams and the writers had "boldly gone where no one has gone before" and given us a new story, with characters that got their own development, instead of relying so heavily on the original series' exploration of the characters to fill in those gaps. Because it didn't do that, it felt like a missed opportunity for something truly remarkable--not that it was bad, because it was enjoyable and exciting and the new versions of the characters weren't completely soulless or unrecognizable, but that it wasn't as good as it could have been.

All that to say, AoS can be a fun watch and I don't hate it by any means, but I personally didn't have as much of a connection with it as I did with the original series. It's a fine starting point, but when I want to be reminded of why I love Trek, TOS is where I go.

Cannes 2019.

Doug Dillaman reports from the first few days at Cannes, where a polarizing Brazilian mystery draws inspiration from Directors’ Fortnight honoree John Carpenter.

Films receiving riotous mid-film applause. People walking out. Wildly unpredictable audience behavior is par for the course at the Cannes Film Festival, but at the premiere of Bacurau, Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles’ rousingly assured and constantly surprising film, both happened at the same moment. That sums up the polarizing nature of the work. Fans of Aquarius will recognize aspects of Mendonça Filho’s extraordinary technique, to be sure, but may also be taken aback by the directions in which he goes.

A quick scan of our members at the fest confirms the confusion: “Doesn’t always work but is excitingly ambitious in what it packs into its runtime,” writes Andy Hazel. “A gloriously demented (and lightly psychedelic) Western,” enthuses David Ehrlich. “The experience was just unpleasant for me,” writes Victor Cannell, who left early.

It won’t be a surprise to those who have followed Mendonça Filho’s career, including his red-carpet protest of Brazil’s government at the 2016 Aquarius premiere in Cannes, that Bacurau—named after the small northern Brazilian town where the film unfolds—is a heavily political film. It arrived on the world stage amid controversy, as the government has demanded the return of money used to fund Mendonça Filho’s debut, O Som ao Redor (Neighboring Sounds). “It’s unprecedented in the history of filmmaking in Brazil, to return this money with interest. It makes no sense at all. We are fighting it with lawyers,” he says.

At the Cannes premiere, the cast and crew found themselves overwhelmed with emotion and caught crying by the cameras. At the following day’s press conference, Mendonça Filho elaborated: “There is this whole idea of destroying the arts in Brazil. It’s fucking amazing to have these Brazilian films here while they’re trying to hide the Brazilian cultural output. That’s one of the 57 reasons we were crying.”

Also shedding a tear was prolific German star Udo Kier, who spoke lovingly of the three weeks he spent filming in “paradise”, and the honor of sharing a scene with Sônia Braga, who he’d adored watching in Kiss of the Spider Woman. “Someone said to me last night ‘you made over 200 films’. But! 100 are bad. 50 you can enjoy with alcohol. And 50 are good.” (It’s safe to say Bacurau is in the latter category.)

The Brazilian cast members were equally proud of the film, if not more so, given the voice it gave to their struggle. It would be a spoiler to tell you which character said it was an honor to die on screen, but Thomas Aquino, who plays a native of Bacurau, spoke plainly about the value of the film as a cultural object. “We use this movie as our weapon. This is our protest. This is how we fight. Doing culture, doing education.”

While the press conference focused on Bacurau’s cultural content, its cinematic roots are equally front and center. And no influence is more primary than horror directing legend John Carpenter, which Mendonça Filho and Dornelles make clear in the film, from a local school that bears the name of ‘Joao Carpenteiro’ to the bold use of one of the maestro’s recent tracks during a key night scene.

The respectability of John Carpenter—hurrah!—is official, a move that comes as a long overdue but pleasing development for the maestro. During the first days of Quinzaine des Realisteurs (Directors’ Fortnight), Carpenter received Le Carosse D’Or, an honorary award for his lifetime of work. He chose a screening of The Thing to mark the occasion, noting that at the time of its release, it bombed. “Even the fans hated it. So I thought it would be incredible revenge on them to screen it at Cannes.”

In an hour-long Q&A hosted by French directors Katell Quillévéré and Yann Gonzales, Carpenter delivered pearls of wisdom in humble, self-deprecating style. From making the titular Thing work on screen (“it’s just a pile of rubber in a room, you’ve got to make it scary”) to finding a crew (“you want to find people who are better than you”—the best advice of the fest so far) to underplaying his use of the Steadicam (“It’s a poor man’s dolly, you don’t have to set up tracks … I’m not an innovator. But if it makes me sound smarter, I will accept innovation.”), he happily gave the impression of someone who doesn’t overthink things.

This came through especially clearly in his description of his directing style: “I get the actors out of makeup, have them roughly walk through the scene, see where they’re going to stand through my viewfinder, and set up the shot. It takes about five minutes. All this has become instinctual over the years.”

Carpenter’s favorite part of making a film, though, is just before cameras roll: “The anticipation of making a movie is exciting, when you have the script and the funding … but then the hard work and pain comes. The most exciting thing is when it opens in theaters, and means I never have to think about it again.” While he doesn’t have a script ready to go, he did note that he “needs to do another alien invasion movie��� and “would love to make a thriller in Europe”.

Fingers crossed. In the meantime, he eschews going to the cinema himself: “In America it can be an unpleasant experience. People use their phones … I’m afraid of what I would do to people if I experience that,” but keeps up with recent horror via screeners, noting that it’s inspiring to see how other directors approach a scene and what they choose to emphasize.

Inevitably in 2019, politics raised its head. Carpenter noted that he’d gotten into a blow-up online regarding 1988’s They Live, which had been mis-interpreted by Nazi apologists as being about Jews. “I made it clear that it wasn’t. It was about yuppies! And then they’re arguing with me about what my film means!” He lamented that America is in a bad state, but also noted that what really makes him despair are international tragedies like the gassing of children in Syria. When asked what gives him hope, his answer was simple. “Talking to people gives me hope. You’re here, you care about cinema, you care about something other than yourself.”

That said, there’s a limit to what he’d reveal: when a fan asked if he could say which of the two characters at the end of The Thing was the monster, he replied simply, “I know which of those two men it is, but I’m not going to tell you.”

Carpenter hasn’t directed a film since 2010’s The Ward, enjoying a “rock star” life of watching basketball and playing video games (most recently, Fallout ’76), but he still sees himself as a filmmaker. “I have no choice. I must make movies. It’s a lifelong affair.”

While we wait for Carpenter to make his return to screen, it’s worth catching up with the films he shared as his biggest influences.

In SND’s favorite manga KinnikuMan, Mister Khamen is a character inspired by olden Egyptian society, hence the pyramid connection. While the Lion is a renowned statue in front of Shinjuku station, like a landmark it’s a common meeting place there.

At CDJ (Countdown Japan, a new year music festival) we came together in an attempt to awaken Pretty*, I saw the band of my old college mate, I saw the band of one of my manga readers (Big respect for him), per natural I missed Kankaku Pierrot, per usual I saw Shaggy Jr. and Kuusou Iinkai, then I got drunk as a skunk after and chatted it up jovial. CDJ is always the best.

I forgot to include the part about using my phone as a penlight and singing along with the crowd for Wasurerannee yo, ya don't forget about Wasurerannee yo. *(Because their name translates to “I don't forget shittt” sort of phrase.)

Also this is a pretty disgusting tweet but… Before we first met I was the one who was always watching ygarshy play while I was down on the floor, so… When I saw him playing bass at CDJ, something horrifying swelled up in my heart. I truly do like watching ygarshy play bass up on the stage, I realized.

The one who SND was trying wake up, the bassist of go!go!vanillas, Pretty, was involved in a car accident.. Much to his loved one's devastation he was hospitalized and remained unconscious for a few weeks on end.. To at last finally wake up... The band crew reunited at his bedside, his recovery back to his life and the stage is certain.

As support for Wasurerannee yo, guests upon Arukara’s tour, we finished our show up in Sapporo, Hokkaido. I send gratitude towards everyone who was at the arena. Shimogami-san (Arukara’s bassist) when he mowed down the trinkets on top of Taisuke’s (Arukara’s vocalist) amp with his shield of wildness, that brought me such satisfaction to watch.

I’ve arrived back at home in Tokyo a step ahead of everyone else. Shimogami-san’s bass line in their new song was extremely cool.

I’m in Osaka right now. Time for the support of Wasureranee yo at the live house Shinsabashi JANUS. In the same fashion as Wasurerannee yo, Hitorie will also later be joining ‘Sukippara ni Sake’ on their new release Doro.ep’. tour.

ygarshy has been filling in as the bassist for the band ‘Wasureranee yo’ He’s been parading along for a many gigs since July of last year, including CDJ2019, their big solo show final, various festivals, and more. + yg is in 3 songs on their new single: “That guy hit a long shot and that girl swooned while I was at home”. “Odore Hikikomori”, “When we all cheered the only glass you didn’t tap was mine”. Judging by the photos Shibata posts of their partnership, they seem to be staying awake until 4 drinking and smiling together, often have their arms wrapped around shoulders, and yg seems to be truly enjoying it.

Philinda & Timelines

I wrote most of this in a more disorganized form a few months back, but now I’ve fleshed it out and done some more calculations. I hope it might be interesting to fans of these characters or useful for those who write fic for them. I personally like to have some dates and characterization timelines to look at when writing fics set in a “real world” type show, so I generally keep some notes for myself in word docs. Here I just kinda dove into it. 

I don’t go into plot timeline details here because I just don’t care. Marvel does an incredibly shit job of taking travel time and medical times into account. They can try and convince me something happened in two weeks, but I’m always going to ignore it. This uses info from the show itself and from an online date calculator. I am mostly not pulling from the various wikis. The wikis are great for trivia, but they are massively self-contradictory due to tie-in comics, stuff said in various interviews, etc. It’s Marvel. [Edited 03/20 to finally include workable theories for Captain Marvel]

Phil Coulson was born July 8, 1964. This makes his sun sign Cancer and his Chinese zodiac year the Dragon. He was an active and outgoing kid who wished he had a brother to play with. His dad died or was killed in 1973. Coulson was only 9 years old. They’d either finished restoring Lola together earlier that year or in 1972. It is implied in season 2 that he and his mother moved after the death, either to a different part of the town or somewhere else entirely as he did not attend the high school his father worked at. Coulson finished high school and went to college to study history, both because that was the subject his dad taught and because he was always a giant history nerd. He worked as a lifeguard as a teenager. We do not know anything about his mother’s work or their relationship when she was alive. A research project into the S.S.R. brought him to Shield’s attention. He was recruited from college by Nick Fury, an agent at the time.

Melinda May was born November 20, 1965 (a reference from the scanned back-page of a tie-in comic I cannot find again - Fury’s Secret Files from somewhere I think). Obviously, they’ve just used Ming’s birthday with a different year to parallel the actors. Her birth location is always listed as classified, so it’s possible her mother was involved with something for the CIA at the time. Her sun sign is Scorpio and her birth year in the Chinese zodiac is the snake. May always picked up new physical activities quickly according to her dad in S3. She started ice-skating at 7 and quickly began skating competitively. At 12 she switched from skating to martial arts. May has a trusting relationship with both her parents. We don’t know anything about when they seemingly separated, decided to live separately for Reasons, or got divorced. There is around a year unaccounted for between when she most likely graduated high school and when she likely joined Shield. She might have joined against her mother’s wishes. We know nothing of how she was recruited.

Star Wars Episode IV came out in May of 1977. Coulson was 12 and May was 10. This is totally relevant information.

These dates mean May is just shy of two years younger than Coulson. More precisely, Coulson is 17 months older.

We know they were at the Academy together (Comms and Ops shared some classes and electives) and graduated at the same time because of 2x4. Comms and Ops would have been in different facilities, though reasonably close together for logistics purposes. There would be a significant amount of overlap for field agent hopefulls. They probably wouldn’t have seen each other every day. They probably usually saw each other multiple times a week, depending on their classes.

They also shared classes with future Agent Blake and Agent Garrett. (It’s important to remember that Agents Hand, Hartley, Sitwell, and Hill are younger in the MCU and did not attend the Academy until the previous four Agents had already left.)

From common practices in American educational law, Coulson very likely started school (kindergarten) in the fall of 1969 (at 5). He would have graduated in 1982 and started college that fall. It is also possible he started school in 1970 (at 6) and graduated in 1983. May likely started school in 1971 at 5 and would have graduated in spring 1984 at 18 or she possibly started school at 1970 at 4 and graduated in 1983 at 17. (At the time, starting kindergarten at 4 years old was common if you would be turning 5 soon. Start ages were lower in the 70s.)

Here’s where a couple different things could have happened.

I’m going to move forward here with the (imo) more likely graduation ages for them both. These aren’t official. These events could have happened a year earlier or a year later, but anything more than that would be very unlikely.

It’s spring 1984. Coulson just finished his sophomore year of college and is about to turn 21. May just graduated high school at 18.

We know the Shield Academies at this point were legitimate in the eyes of the U.S. Government, though mostly under the radar. There was enough of a structured curriculum schedule in place we know they had a yearbook (as of season 5). Taking on recruits under 18 generally requires parental permission, as Shield is still paramilitary.

Option 1 - Coulson’s research has already drawn Shield’s attention and he is approached by Fury. Someone recruits May or she becomes aware of Shield some other way. They start at the Shield academies fall of 1984. They are 21 and 18 when they join.

Option 2 - Coulson continues through his junior year of college. His research into the S.S.R. draws Shield’s attention. Fury goes to recruit him. May spends a year doing any number of things. Her mother might want her to pursue the CIA. May picks Shield. They start at the Shield academies fall of 1985. They are 22 and 19 when they join.

Option 3 - Coulson is about to finish college when he draws the attention of Shield and is recruited by Fury. May is an unknown for two years. They start at the Shield academies fall of 1986. They are 23 and 20 when they join.

Star Trek IV (the whale movie) came out in November of 1986. Coulson was 23 and May was just 21. This is also totally relevant information.

Let’s say MCU Shield’s training program lasted 3-4 years. (Fitzsimmons strongly implied in season 1 Seeds that Scitech usually took about four years.)

The absolute earliest (3 years) May and Coulson (and Garrett) should have been in the field was 1987/1988/1989. Their most likely brand-new Level 1 Agent year was 1988/1989/1990.

Coulson and May were most likely Level 1 agents at 23 and 21/24 and 22/25 and 23.  

The Sausalito mission mentioned in episode 2x4 probably happened later in 1988/1989/1990.

John Garrett, who they were trained with, was injured in Sarajevo and became a Project Deathlok subject in 1990. He probably was only Level 2. He’d only been an agent 2-3 years maximum.

We knew from season 1 that Coulson’s mom Julie was long gone. The wiki puts her death as September 22, 1992, exactly 19 years after her husband’s death. Coulson was only 28.  

This is where I take issue with one of the semi-official dates. Big issue.

We got a flashback to a younger Agent Coulson and Agent May in season 4. May was a Level 3 specialist and Coulson was recently Level 4. We know they knew each other pretty well at that point, enjoyed each other’s company, and also frequently went weeks or months without seeing each other. They worked on missions separately and together and kept track of each other through company gossip. It’s at this point in their lives that a little, badly-kept-secret, mutual crush is going on that is ultimately not pursued for multiple reasons. They stay close friends and work partners for the next 10-15 ish years.

Parts of the wiki claims this flashback was to 2003. However, this is basically a retcon and in my oh so professional and classy-sounding opinion is just dumber than fuck. (Also, that date was never used in the episode.)

The absolute latest Coulson and May started as field agents was 1990. So *13 years* later they’re still Level 3? I don’t think so. Level 1 is your entry level. Anyone who is performing well is only going to stay there 1-3 years max. Level 2 is your no longer a noob level. If you’re doing great work let’s say people stay there 2-5 years. Agents would stay longer in Levels 3/4/5 than Levels 1 and 2.

Let’s be generous and give them 5 years at Levels 1 and 2. It could have easily been 4, maybe even 3 depending on how fast they got their groove after the whole “in the bay for five hours” thing. Coulson and May logically made it to Level 3 anywhere around 1993/1994/1995.

The Captain Marvel movie makes dubious use of existing aos canon, but if we use the perspective that Phil is a brand new Level 3 field agent instead of one fresh out of the Academy (which is completely incompatible with aos’s timeline) than we can say Phil and May were new level 3 agents sometime early in 1995. 

A sensible placement for the Russian 0-8-4 mission would be anywhere from late 1995-1997. With Phil having recently made Level 4 (strongly implied the the flashback), I would suggest 1996 or 1997 as the most likely placement. 

From the tie-in comics, MCU Agent Barton is recruited by Nick Fury around this same time, Agent Romanoff “recruited’ by him a few years later.

By 2003, both Coulson and May should have advanced a Level again and be taking on more complex missions. Strike Team Delta is part of Shield now. Fury is Director.

The Bahrain mission happened in 2008. Coulson was likely a Level 6 operative and May would be Level 5. Coulson took a lot of orders from a lot of people in episode 2x17. I highly doubt he was Level 7 at that point. The agent in charge of the operation, Agent Hart, was one of the ones Katya took over. Big Shield headquarters forbade Coulson from sending May into the building. He gave her the clear to go anyway and covered for her. May was 42. Coulson was 43 or 44.

May worked on administration for mostly Level 3s in the basement of the Triskelion for the next 4.5 years. This does not mean she became a lower ranking agent; you would likely want a higher-than-3 managing your level 3s.

Coulson is sent to make contact with Tony Stark later in 2008. At some point he advances to Level 7 then 8. Given Shield viewed the Bahrain rescue as a legendary success, not knowing how it unfolded, it is reasonable to think Coulson was promoted to 7 shortly afterwards. 

Coulson died on the Helicarrier on May 4th, 2012 during The Incident. He was 47. May was 46 when she found out he was dead.

When we met them in season 1, Coulson was recently 49 (technically…) and May was 47. May is a Level 7 agent and Coulson remains Level 8.

After season 5 they are on a beach in Tahiti. Coulson is 54 and May is 52. They’ve known each other 34/33/32 years.

Now, I’ve tried to structure this whole thing in a way that should you want to change their school-dates and use any of the three options you should be able to go through and add/subtract from the existing numbers pretty easily. So I hope that’s useful if you’ve been trying to math and write fic or if there’s just been general confusion.

I greatly prefer to write from the Option 2 set, with adjustments made for Captain Marvel. That just makes the most sense to me as far as events we know about from season one and the other life events for these characters. So if you’ve read any of my stuff, this is generally where I’m coming from.

I really hope this was useful and interesting. I spent far too much time on it.

F: Care to share a favorite hurt/comfort fic?

I want to caveat that I read a LOT of fic. Like ... probably minimum 5K-10K per day most days in between also reading original fiction and stuff for grad school. I just generally consume massive amounts of written material every day. I also bookmark a lot of stuff that I may or may never come back to. So. I basically set my bookmarks to 'hurt/comfort' and picked a few that I really clearly remembered and thought fuck yeah, that's the stuff. It leans heavily toward stuff I've read fairly recently (I mean ... last 5 or so years, not last week, but still, my most recent fandoms are disproportionately represented). I've been in fandom for 20+ years and could dig deeper to find old favorites, but going through recent Ao3 bookmarks is much easier.

There should definitely also be some Tolkien, Ted Lasso, and MCU fic here, even just looking at the past 5 years. Don't know if those weren't bookmarked or weren't tagged, but that would be more truly representative. Schitt's Creek is very good at H/C though, so I'm not shocked that was most of my recent bookmarks. I think there are probably a lot of fics I read and even bookmarked that give me a H/C catharsis but probably the writer didn't tag them that way.

L: What’s the weirdest AU you’ve ever come up with?

HP third year AU Remus Lupin/Minerva McGonagall based on the final episode of The Secret World of Alex Mack. I published a few chapters of it almost 20 years ago and never finished. It would probably not have been an especially weird fic had 1) JK not revealed that McGonagall was much older than many of us online were assuming in the first few books, 2) I did not reveal that it was based on the final ep of a kids' TV show. Also, evidently Alex Mack is not streaming in its entirety and that's a crime.

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

There are probably a lot of fic writers that have influenced me. I'm not sure I could pinpoint the influences now. I remember finding victoria_p/musesfool's writing style especially captivating, though it's been a while since I've revisited their work, so I'd have to re-read and see how much has soaked into my own writing. Truman Capote was pretty formative for me as a young teen. I know there have been other writers of original fiction I've felt influenced me over the years, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Celebrity AU -- one or more of the leads are famous actors/musicians/socialites/royalty/other public figures and are dodging the press as they try to sort out their personal lives. V: A secondary (or underrated) character you want to see more of in fic?

Ronnie Lee from Schitt's Creek feels like a difficult character to get a handle on, so I know why she's always mostly a supporting character in fic (as she is in the show), but I'd love to see more deep explorations of her. I'd love more Edward Courtenay fic for Downton Abbey. Fortunately, most of my fandoms have been large and sprawling and have had pockets dedicated to virtually every secondary character, so I rarely felt badly under-served.

Hidoku Shinaide (10/10): Nemugasa is only at a very expensive and important high school on a scholarship and when his scholarship is in danger he decides that he will study his ass off. That is until Maya, the local cool guy in his class, loudly states that he’s going to make a cheat-sheet (which he doesn’t). Using this idea Nemugasa does makes a cheat-sheet to pass the exam. Afterwards Maya approaches Nemugasa and threatens him to ensure that his mouth stays silent. However, this threat includes them sleeping together and they both slowly learn that sleeping together without emotions will only last so long, and they both start falling for each other. The rest of the manga follows their relationship as they continue together through high school into college. Honto Yajuu (10/10): The classic story of a cop and a yakuza that fall in love. This story is super adorable and I can’t rave about it enough. Follow Aki as he instantly falls in love policeman, Ueda, who saves him from an underwear thief and needs to convince Ueda to fall in love with him. Along the way they encounter obstacles such as other gangs, exs, and the struggle of keeping their relationship a secret. Cop/Gangster, Romance, Drama, Heartwarming, Comedy, Rings, They’re basically living together (10vol, 22ch)

***Katekyo! (10/10): Rintarou’s home tutor is beautiful, but he’s anything but kind (especially to Rintarou). As they grow closer Rintarou starts realizing he has feelings for Kaede, but one day Kaede tease Rintarou by playing with his body. Afterwards Rintarou is anxious since he doesn’t think that Kaede feels the same way towards him. In every way that Rintarou is uncertain Kaede is there to support him and reassure him. Comedy, School Life, Romance (4vol, 26ch)

***Koi to wa Yobenai (9/10): Right before Christmas, Ei is walking home alone and heartbroken after his lover dumped him in order to marry someone else. Depressed Ei barley sees the man and cat that are being buried by the falling snow. Snapping back to his senses he helps the two of them into his apartment and out of the cold. Just as winter turns to spring Ei’s broken heart starts to thaw making room for new love. He starts falling for the man that he saved that night, Junpei, but Ei promises himself he’ll never fall in love again. However, just as Ei’s about to surrender to his feelings for Junpei his ex returns saying he wants Ei back. Drama, Romance, Slice of Life, Discovering New Love, Heartwarming (3vol, 24ch)

***Love Mode (10/10): Love Mode tells the love stories of a group of men. Usually I’m not a fan of one-shots, but this is an interlocked story between multiple couple and they do go back to the other couples so don’t worry. The first story is that of Izumi who gets his identity mistaken for a male escort and is taken out on a date by a translator. This misunderstanding sparks their slow blooming relationship. Meanwhile, the host in question also has their relationship with their owner of the club they attempt to pursue. However, the owner, Reiji, has his eyes on a boy down on his luck, Naoya. Naoya recently lost his home due to a fire after losing his job so Reiji asks Naoyo to come and live with him till he gets back on his feet, but Naoyo’s pride is another matter. The art style is older, but you’ll get use to it. Plus the story is great! Drama, Romance, Comedy, Tragedy, Age Gap, Psychological, Living Together (11vol, 54ch)

***Mousou Elektel (10/10): Shunpei's life is completely normal until his childhood friend Fumi calls him up to the rooftop one day. Fumi confesses to him that he’s gay. Shunpei then expects that Fumi’s going to tell him that Shunpei's the interest of his gay love, but Fumi surprises him by telling Shunpei that he already has a boyfriend. At a loss Shunpei starts wondering why Fumi isn’t attracted to him. In an effort to gain his friend’s love Shunpei slowly learns his own feelings for his friend. Comedy, Drama, Slice of Life, School Life, Neighbors, Childhood Friends (4vol, 25ch)

***Rutta to Kodama (10/10): Kodama always moves due to his parents work so coming in to school late is nothing new. When he moves in he moves in with the local tough guy, but after their first encounter gives him the nickname Rutta. Slowly they grow closer to each other until Rutta finally confesses. They each make each other better people as they go through their school life, and grow emotionally as a couple. It’s a very simple story, but very heartwarming easy read. Heartwarming, Roommates, Comedy, School Life, Delinquents (3vol, 21ch)

***Shizuku Hanabira Ringo no Kaori (10/10): As a businessman that distributes sake it’s a weakness for Mutsuki that he has no tolerance for alcohol. One day his boss orders him to go to a very troublesome brewery and get a contract. Upon arriving Mutsuki meets Shuusaku, the brew master’s grandson. Shuusaku is standoffish and unfriendly, but that doesn’t stop Mutsuki from instantly falling for him. In his own weird and determined way Mutsuki aims to get both the contract and Shuusaku’s heart. Romance, Comedy, Brewery, Heartwarming, Businessman, Drama (3vol, 21ch)

Ten Count (10/10): Shirotani has a very serious condition known as Mysophobic (germaphobe) so when the president of his company was in danger and he couldn’t bring himself to save him. Shirontani was greatful when a passerby, Kurose, saved the President. However, the last thing he expected what that the person would know of his condition and tell him that he should seek medical attention. Just when Shirontani gathered his courage to seek medical attention he noticed Kurose heading into the office. Drama, Romance, Doctor, Illness, Heartwarming, Slice of Life (41ch)

***Yatteranneeze! (10/10): Fujimoto is every parent and teacher’s idea of perfect: perfect grades, top of his class, and Student council VP. However, he wants nothing more than to break that mold. On summer he goes out and finds a popular boy and decides to live his life to the fullest. The boy in question, Masaki, dresses him in cool clothes, teaches him how to act cool, and even dyes his hair and pierces his ear. In addition, Masaki says he wants to teach the new cool Fujimoto how to kiss and thus the downhill spiral of their love begins. Even when they return to school Fujimoto realizes that he can never go back to who he use to be. This is drawn in an older art style, but I promise that it’s still cute. Romance, Comedy, Drama, Slice of Life, School Life (7vol 22ch)

***Yume Musubi, Koi Musubi (9/10): Ao might look adorable, but man does he have a lot of horny energy stored up and its all directed towards his childhood friend Ryoumei. Ryoumei is also the neighborhood Shinto priest who definitely shouldn’t be doing anything scandalous with Ao. However, after rejecting Ao he can’t bare seeing Ao’s distress and his own feelings of annoyance. They slowly learn how important they are to each other. Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life, Age Gap, Childhood Friends (4vol, 22ch)

I miss the days when we had elegant women like Jen, Ginny, Emilie, Bex, Meghan, Jamie, and Rose on OUAT to promote. Do you think Channing Dungey will actually cancel it? It might get a spike in ratings going up with AOS and the mid season finale could get a lot of viewers too.

Well considering it's in the Friday night slot (where shows go to die) and therefore got a demotion in regards to scheduling, along with the fact that the ratings have been steadily declining (I mean, they lost half a million viewers between hours 1 and 2 of "that" episode!), as well as being ABC's worst-rated show (the only other one with ratings marginally worse than Once's has now been cancelled)...I just don't see it serving them very well to continue it.The only reason A&E are flogging a dead horse now is because their other attempts at new shows failed spectacularly and they won't be getting another chance from the network to pitch yet another new show. So what have they got to lose by dragging this ridiculousness out for as long as ABC will tolerate the abysmal ratings? They should never have done the reboot, but they were given a chance because of the show's "veteran status". And they've very clearly failed, alienating a large majority of long-time fans and not drawing in the so-called "new viewers" they were delusionally hoping for. Because who picks up a show in its 7th season and decides to start watching it from there?! That angle made no sense.Yes, I acknowledge there's still some people from the fandom watching and still some apparently enjoying the new season...or rather, new version of the show with rehashed storylines from previous seasons and gaping plotholes that throw the entire premise of the reboot for a loop, because it makes NO SENSE if you take into account the plotholes. The people who have stuck with the show are in the minority, as evidenced by the plummeting ratings. To lose half a million viewers within one episode...I mean. Yikes. And now they've got a three or four week break or something? That's NOT gonna help. I hope the actors are lining up their next jobs now, because it's very likely this will (blessedly) be the last season.

*A Harem of One is an AU 1 shot, with a possibility for more. Killian Jones, younger son of Prominent Turkish Businessman, Brennan Jones, meets Lady Emma during the height of the London season just a few weeks before he must head back to Constantinople to take over the family shipping business. Despondent over the fact that he had to leave the woman he loves behind, things get interesting when Brennan tries to give Killian a welcome home gift. Rated M. ao3 and ff.

I think AoS just gets very little publicity cos after the winter soldier the movies decided they couldn’t be bothered pretending all marvel properties exist in a shared universe, so every single one of those movie hype sites just never mentioned the series for 4 years. There was a poll last year that said it ranks in the top three TV shows in the US, which “surprised everyone”. Didn’t surprise me.

32: Do you like watching holiday movies?

Mostly, no - I don’t really like watching movies about christmas or coming home to a small town for the holidays cos they’re all too americanized. All those “dysfunctional family” movies rely upon stereotypes I don’t like or don’t get (or that we don’t have over in this country) or are filled to the brim with annoying actors and a lot of domestic drama that is more stressful than entertaining.

Very occasionally I will consent to watching love actually.
