can you elaborate on your feelings on vassago?

this blogs becoming what i use to kill time while i wait for my laundry to finish hi. first thing i did today was spill my entire water bottle on my bed. i think vassago is, at best, introduced too early, and at worst, shouldn't exist.

best case is that i think they gave him a poor introduction with functionally no personality outside of 'are you winning son' 'OMG STOLAS!' i genuinely don't get what people like about him. he doesn't do or say anything substantial. it's bc he's yaoi bait and that's it

worst case i think he's just a bad character for the plot. it seems like this dude has some history with stolas (if we ignore that stolas awkwardly does not acknowledge the weird fan behaviour whatsoever lmfaoooo) when stolas was like…established to be living this miserable lonely friendless life. no one likes stolas and he's not respected by his peers. he seems to have pretty bad people skills, and that's being generous. the one real light he has in his life aside from his affair partner (an affair of which should be motivated by that loneliness), allegedly his daughter…and fucking guy we've never heard of until now hiii vassago hi!!! i'll eat my words if i'm wrong but i can't really fathom how stolas having 1 guy who's been in his corner this whole time aids in his narrative, like, at all.

utterly baffling introduction. it's awkward and bizarre. it acts like we should already know who this guy is, almost. if he's going to be important later, fine, but he should've been introduced later then. mastermind was basically nothing. it's barely an introduction at all. equivalent of like, someone asking me to introduce myself, and all i say for 5 minutes is I UFUCKING LOVE THE COLOUR YELLOW, like ok. what else man

A little Lane and Jess being besties wip that's been languishing in my laptop for a year.

The first time Lane sees him is in 2nd period Spanish. Stars Hollow High is a tiny school, and new students are rare. They tend to cause a flurry of excitement. And new students who are particularly cute? It’s likely to be the gossip for weeks to come.

And Jess Mariano, despite his mildly pretentious popped collar and James Dean wannabe hair, is undeniably cute. He’s not Lane’s type, really, but it’s impossible not to notice those deep brown eyes, the slight curl to his hair, and full lips that occasionally quirk up into a crooked smile. 

He walks into class, late, with nothing. No backpack, no notebooks, not even a pencil in his hand. Mrs. Russo makes him stand at the front of the class (why do teachers do this?), and announces, “This is Jess…" she checks the paper in her hand, "Mariano. New student, straight from New York City. Let’s welcome him. En Español, por favor.”

“Bienvenidos…” a few students mumble. Jess smirks. Okay, cute is not the word. The boy is gorgeous. Lane can admit that in the privacy of her own brain.

“All done up here?” he asks Mrs. Russo, adopting a tone of false sincerity. 

“Yes, sure… sit there,” she gestures. Jess promptly sits, folds his hands on the desk, and looks up. Just waiting. “Um, do you need a notebook?” she asks.

“Nah. I’m taking notes up here,” Jess taps his forehead. Wow. This dude is bold for a new student.

Mrs. Russo is clearly flustered by this, so after a moment of fumbling she resumes teaching. Jess stares straight ahead, but within seconds he gets distracted. Which, in turn, distracts Lane. He’s looking around the room, drumming his fingers on his desk, staring out the window for a long moment, examining something on the bottom of his shoe, then folding his hands and twiddling his thumbs. It’s mesmerizing. He suddenly looks up and makes eye contact with Lane, like he’s completely aware that she’s been staring at him this whole time. She flushes. But he just smirks and tosses her a little wave. Lane quickly looks away.

By the end of the week, he starts bringing something to school: paperbacks. There’s a new one every day, always folded in his back pocket. Without fail, in every single class, Jess sits in his seat, waits approximately 45 seconds, and then pulls out a book. Reads uninterrupted for the entire class. Lane’s initial intrigue has now turned into a full-blown fascination. Because this guy makes zero effort despite the fact he’s obviously smart. He reads continuously, brow furrowed as he holds the book sort of bizarrely close to his face. He is seemingly oblivious to the entire world around him. Yet every single time a teacher asks him a question - trying to catch him in his inattention - Jess answers it correctly. It quickly becomes apparent that this habit is infuriating to his teachers, Mrs. Russo most of all. After he answers three questions about the subjunctive tense correctly, she finally loses it.

It’s worth revisiting what we mean when we say we trust a showrunner. I’d rather we didn’t say it at all. We don’t actually know them, and they’re just human. They’re going to make writing decisions we find shortsighted or painful or less creatively effective than an entire fandom’s collective output. They're in the writing trenches; they don't get to analyze everything to the depth we do.

But if we do say we trust them, let’s stop meaning that we trust the story to mean the same thing to them that it does to us. We tend to love one character or another most; they tend to love the story as a whole. Let’s find writers we trust to do justice to the story they’re telling for their own sakes. Each of us brings our past and our inner selves to the stories; so do they. For OFMD, Jenkins has said he’s writing a story about masculinity, and the ways we’ve got it wrong.

Even Ed and Stede and their love are secondary to that — that’s why they have to split up repeatedly; they have to heal and reorient their own sense of themselves and their community and their masculinity even more than they need to love each other. And in Jenkins’ narrative Izzy (and Hornigold, and CJ, and Ed’s dad) stands in for the real-world men who keep pushing their sons and friends and students and partners back toward a masculinity that hurts them deeply. Jenkins is showing how they do it without even understanding why it hurts or how it could be different.

And Stede got his blessing from Mary, but Ed never got an apology, or a blessing, or any understanding from the rest; so Jenkins had Izzy stay around long enough and gain enough depth to understand how to see him, to give Ed his blessing. That was part of the story Jenkins needed to tell — the moment someone formative who hurt you sees what they’ve done and makes it right.

As to what else it could have meant, who else he could have been or was to us — that’s what fandom is for.

All I want for Izzy Hands is a genuine, heartfelt word from Edward, or a gentle touch, to show him Izzy matters, but also... that smol man would simply crumble under the weight of affection, like a cardhouse
