i put a lot more time into my piece for the serenity zine than I usually do, so ive been wanting to make a write up with more details about what i was intending + stuff thats easy to miss (full piece without the character names can be seen here)

1: text on the characters

the text on all of the characters are all quotes from orv. for characters from specific rounds, the text is specifically linked to those rounds (ex: 1863 uriel has text from when kdj is thinking about how gabriel isn't aware of her own betrayal of eden). Where i could, i tried to find text that paralled kdj somehow (sp with changing the 999th worldline, and 41 sys with her resentment towards yjh paralleling kdj's towards lsk for leaving him behind.).

for characters that aren't from specific worldlines (or where i couldn't find text i wanted to use that related to their worldlines) , the text either centers something i feel is central to orv (ex jhy talking about the final wall is used in both of her cut outs), kdjs perception of the character or thoughts of them from wos (ex lsh and his line about not really knowing her), or something about the character that parallels kdj (bihyungs cut outs are both about his ending of sacrificing himself, yma is about yjh leaving in the epilogue and her belief he won't come back (which works doubly as yjh leaving as kdj often did, and yma being left behind by her guardian)).

there is also sunfish yjh. who only says "the sunfish" because of the constraints of being a tiny piece of paper. The full quote is "Maybe I had been lucky until now. I might be the 'sunfish' rather than yoo joonghyuk" from chapter 38.

i don't think everything like, perfectly follows these categories, but that was the intent for the most part. One intentional exception is that the yjh near the bottom of the drawing has the text: "I want to read this story for a little bit longer"

2: amount of characters + visual details

there are 2 versions of each character for the most part, with 4 exceptions: kdj (3), yjh (6, counting the sunfish but not the kkoma), and na bori and knw only having 1.

the reason there's only one na bori is because her fate is, for the most part, set before her story can be changed by yjh. there is only 1 of her in all of the characters memories, outside of the 1865 worldline (though given we see knw after kdj kills him, its not out of the question there isn't a worldline where she reappears.)

for kim namwoon, its part because of kdj's hatred for him as someone he sees himself in, and part because kdj in orv like. replaces knw pretty directly by killing him and trying to become yjh's companion. so in kdjs notes and doodles based on wos, knw is here only as an outergod king, where kdj is unaware of him.

the outer god kings all have at least one element that sets them apart from the other cut outs: sp has his crumpled paper cloak, knw's cut out is in the shape of dragons near the edges, uriel is on fire, lhs is partially tin foil, and ljh has a water stain and some of her paper is peeling off into water. this represents them being unbound from the worldlines, but since they're still bound to the story they're still made of paper.

anna croft (near uriel) is intentionally a little more 3D than the other characters, since she has memories from past worldlines. she's supposed to seem like shes going against the tide.

1863 uriel is also a bit of an exception, though not intentionally, since her halo looks better as a separate piece of paper, and i wanted her to have flames too... it fits because shes a constellation and seeing the story from a somewhat outside perspective but is still a part of it, but it wasn't intentional.

near the edges of the piece towards the right, some characters outlines start to become faded, and the paper cut out outlines become more irregular. the outer god kings are exempt because they've managed to keep their sense of self to an extent outside of the worldline.

some of kdjs books are from his library in orv.

the text for all characters is slightly cut off (i tried to make it so most of the quotes are missing some texts so you can't actually read them in full). this is both because they're cut out of a larger page, and because kdj can't actually learn everything about the characters once he meets them by reading them because you can't read people like that. so some of the text is out of view because the characters are viewed as characters to kdj and not "real" yet, so kdj doesn't see their full stories.

i sort of wish i kept the paper style of this yjh, but it wasn't meant to be....

3. final thoughts........

this really is the most... orv piece i've ever done (?), in a lot of ways. there is nothing that makes you feel more like kdj like searching up orv quotes from memory and then scrolling through the epub on your phone to find what you want. i even ended up explaining it to my mom and having to show her what a sunfish was.

there are things i would change about it if i did it now (i would probably erase the outline from adult kdjs cut out and emphasize his shadow falling on it instead), and things i didn't get to do that would've made it more like what i envisioned (ideally i would've reread all of orv to find quotes. and i didn't do that).

It's personal to me in ways that are kind of silly. I used to doodle a lot of paper cut out creatures in high school, which helped a lot with getting the sort of paper movement down here. and of course the handwriting is just my own, so i had to actually rewrite the quotes i found. it's probably the most ambitious piece i've drawn yet composition wise, and i don't think ive spent so long on a single illustration besides art studies for school. It feels like a love letter to everything orv means to me.

some lookism childhood headcanons 

i imagine hyungseok as one of those really cute kids that resemble marshmallows. he's just so soft and round and giggles when you pick him up and spin him around!!! his mom would take him to work with her and her coworkers would give him all sorts of snacks and pocket money. he's like a bouncing ball of pure sunshine.

johan as a kid would be extremely intrigued with religious imagery. he would often try to memorise the architecture of the church his mother takes him to, and then try to draw them when he's bored. 

i also imagine that johan's an amazing artist, and the god dog logo is his own design. when he was small, johan would always want to participate in art competitions, but art supplies are a luxury so he gives up on that desire pretty fast. he conveys the same to his mom, who praises him for being a sensible child as johan sniffles on her shoulder against a tattered cardigan that smells like home.

samuel was always too little for his age, and never managed to eat until he was full. either his mom would scream at him for being within her sight for too long, or he would lose his appetite seeing her face. 

he watches his mom's TV soaps from a corner and sees everyone being nice to the handsome and capable male lead, and starts believing that people only care for what they cannot have. so, he too, will become someone unattainable by everyone.

samuel is too angry for someone that scrawny, so the seniors always beat him to pulp. but, he never cries. instead, if the other boys would listen closely, they would hear him mutter under his breath, "i am gapryong kim…" (yes this is about kdj telling himself that he's yjh from orv)

jake as a kid is very easy to please. he's like a porcelain doll that you have to poke in order to get a reaction, but once he knows you, he clings and never lets go. 

teen jake is almost a carbon copy of young gapryong, but when he smiles, he looks exactly like his mom. but, years of living with his dad make his smiles dim in frequency, so the resemblance goes unnoticed. 

growing up, jake would probably hate mirrors as he is reminded of how much his appearance starts resembling his dad's, when he looks into one. his relationship with his mom grows strained because he doesn't want her to be in pain when she is inevitably reminded of gapryong when she looks at him, so he always tries to disappear from her sight, and eventually runs away from home, not knowing his future in a gang where, in order to be with those his loves, he must become inseparable from his dad's violence.

zack is a typical rich kid who always gets what he wants. he is very into superhero movies and comics, and is an idealist who takes inspiration from his favourite characters. he too wishes to save his friends and protect his love just like the figures wearing flowing capes on the screen, drawn on the pages of his books. 

vasco is also into action-comics and superheroes, but he is the one who wants to be “saved.” like he looks at his mom struggle financially and emotionally as a single-parent and wonders what a saviour would look like, when they would arrive. (i think one of the many reasons he becomes breakdak's student is because he feels he is accompanying an invincible force that can guide him in his path to save others, and thus, save himself.) 

vasco’s morality also stems from the absolute goodness of heroes, where he is a stickler for reform within the boundaries of pre-established rules and codes of moral conduct.

jace as a kid is a nightmare. u know they say that kids are blunt but jace takes it to a whole another level. you CANNOT lie to him, in front of him, about him because he WILL expose your lies. his analysis goes crazy and adults are a bit scared of him. santa? “i know it’s you, dad.” “H-HOW???” “i just know. also you left the house at 8 in the evening and returned with exactly 5000 won missing from your wallet. The price of chocolate-” “OKAY. OKAY. STOP. JESUS”

goo’s weird and off-putting vibes have accompanied him from the womb. he mutilated insects by plucking out their wings and trapping them under glasses before torturing them in “the fly : short story by katherine mansfield” style. there isn’t much to say except he probably committed arson before reaching the age of twelve.

gun is the gojo satoru of lookism like the balance in the yakuza was shifted after his birth. yes the power he inherits is a burden to him but he loves having the burden and being the sole one to possess it.

he feels no genuine emotions or connections to anyone at all, as if he and the world around him are separated by an impenetrable wall, the strong existing on the pinnacle of a lonely mountain towering over the weak. 

the only emotion that gets to him is the sense of pure ecstasy he feels during fights, the thrill of fighting just for the sake of it, the enjoyment of enacting violence unto his enemies bcz he knows he is at the top (on heaven and earth, i alone am the honoured one)

so i have read my fair share of orv fics and i’ve been thinking it’s time to share my favorites out to the world. not sure how many of these i’ll make, but i thought i’d keep it short and sweet and list out just a few of my favorites if anyone wants to give them a read.

It hadn’t been a big deal, Kim Dokja had thought, when he started feeling a little under the weather. It’d just been a sneeze. A cough. Maybe a bit of a runny nose. It still wasn’t a big deal when he’d gotten the fever later. These things happen. It’s not like he’s spent how-ever-many years taking care of himself and somehow never run into a cold. He’s made it work, dragged himself to work, and has done so multiple times over the course of his life. Shocker of shockers, he’s never died even once throughout this entire process. He can take care of himself.

Kim Dokja’s Company doesn’t seem to think so. Notes: post-canon/post-epilogue fic. beware of spoilers. another sickfic... ok but listen, i live for any type of hurt/comfort found family trope, although there’s not really any hurt, mainly just fluff and comfort.

Really, I put a ton of work into making this, and you’re not even thanking me.”

Due to enablers I have more propaganda since the YJH propaganda led to me spiraling off into how Kim Dokja is an autism king as well speech. As per my YJH propaganda I'm gonna do webtoon friendly first then go into full novel spoilers after a lil break!!

The clearest and most obvious point in this man's character is that his hyperfixation of over a decade on the story Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World (or the Apocalypse depending on what you read), which will be called TWS from here on. He has every bit of this story in his brain (literally) and it's over 3000 chapters long. He read this story constantly, always on his phone reading and rereading what was posted, commenting on each chapter, and soapboxing to try and get someone else to read it. He did the soapboxing so much he would be spotted On Sight by other forum users who dogpiled him due to the fact that the story was, by all rights as understood from outside statements, rather mid. He had so cleanly memorized the story that part of his skill, once the apocalypse started, was that he could just quick draw reference the stats of the people from the story and reread it faster for a refresher

TWS is such a strong hyperfixation that whenever he would visit his mum in prison he would just retell to her the story as he was reading it along with his thoughts, feelings, and opinions on the plot and characters. He is regularly described as actually lighting up when talking about the story at all! He discusses TWS so thoroughly that when the apocalypse started his mum was able to navigate the scenarios and other changes cleanly and even plan around ways that would augment the plans she figured her own son and the protagonist of the story (YJH) would conduct to let them do their thing!!

This fixation is also something that absolutely doubles as a coping mechanism (escapism) AND his avoidance of losing things. He already was a reader from a very young age and, when he got upset over a story ending as a kid, his mum taught him "read it again" because it would be different every time. Your understanding would be better, you will notice foreshadowing you missed, you will understand motivations of side characters more, your life scenario will be different and you might view it differently just because YOU have changed. This was something KDJ absolutely took to heart. Afterall, if you just keep rereading and exploring the book's world more and more it's not really ending, you don't have to let it go until you're ready to read soemthing else and put the book down

He also used this reading as a way to figure out how to interact with people (even if he was bad at it) because in real life he was Not Good at talking or socializing. This wasn't Entirely his fault (his mum printing a book from prison about murdering her husband included Dokja so that was a social murder for the young teen) but he also just was generally poor at orienting himself both socially and in the literal directional sense. Its easier to pick apart motivations when you read a wide range of medias and dive into characters to have as a base to pull from

Masking? Oh, social masking? You mean how every time he's in an uncomfy situation he mumbles to himself "I am Yoo Joonghyuk" because thats his comfort character? And his idol in a way even though he loves and hates so much about him? Or do you mean that his biggest and strongest skill post apocalypse is called 4th Wall and is just Masking: The Skill. 4th wall REGULARLY absorbs emotional, mental, and physical shock to keep KDJ stable and functioning in his day to day life post apocalypse!

Does this man preplan everything? Oh yeah, absolutely. He is spending every waking moment planning for scenarios far into the future, reading and checking his details against TWS and sharing this information with others as needed to keep them successful and, most importantly, alive! He loves these characters come to literal life so much that he dies repeatedly for them to survive because he cannot handle the idea of not getting to the end of the story with all of them alive. He literally corrected his plans so that, when interference did kill one of the characters, he just went to the underworld and brought their soul back so that they could still be alive (in a way that would also work to keep him with the upperhand in the future). Even still, his adaptability is not that great and he does have a few emotional meltdowns in the future over changes that mess up his plans, he's just better at it than YJH

Okay now is me not being able to avoid spoilers so if you havent read the novel to completion go ahead and skip!!!

Homie talks but my boy Kim Dokja is NOT good at communicating, more just trying to talk so that he can wiggle out of conversation and get back to whatever he wants to pick at in his mind or do on his own. He's so bad in fact that when given a literal scenario that is just "talk to your friends" he panics because he doesn't think he will succeed (nor do they expect him to) because he just is bad at communication

Oh and TWS is such a huge part of his life that Sookyung (his mum) hates YJH for essentially taking her son away from her, in her eyes, and when later on the Olympus read fate is read to be that KDJ would be "killed by the one he loves the most" she KNOWS that the one to do it will be YJH once she sees him (although she has killed KDJ herself at this point in a hope that it's her, this family is sooo normal)

Truly is there anything more pure than whole hearted loving without wanting in return? The love a reader has for their precious comfort character? Not expecting anything in return but to have that character happy with love and comfort in their life? Is he projecting with his lack of self worth and investing and living vicariously? Absolutely, but that's also the mental illness (this man is so depressed and anxious and self harm driven)

Speaking of self harm and not being able to handle losing things he cares about! KDJ actively sets up plans and reacts in ways that gets him fr actually killed over and over and over. From the start of the King's Path to The Strongest Sacrifice to, everyone's favorite, The 73rd Demon King, and beyond, this man WILL kill himself instead of letting someone die and he also WILL have a meltdown if he thinks someone has actually died and do everything he can to fix it back because he cannot let go of someone or something he feels he needs as a crutch to keep himself up

I think it says a LOT that 4th wall is literally the embodiment of TWS. It's how he kept himself safe(ish) and living before the apocalypse and, once it started, it became more solid and real. I feel a lot of folks who masked for most of their life know the struggle of "I don't know who I am without this mask and it scares me" as they get to the point of recognizing that they have to look underneath. A dokkaebi, the beings that start the apocalypse in the story, the beings that KDJ manipulates to his needs, being the very thing he needs to get past to see himself means a lot to me. When it talks to him and he threatens to break it because he wants to see his own abilities without it filtering him (cries) it tells him, essentially, "Im keeping you safe you can't look too long it will hurt you"

The 4th wall, being the thing keeping his mind safe, is shown to devour characters from the book (and some people but they come back its fine) and uses them as curators to organize KDJ's thoughts and all the information about his life and TWS in his mind, which is a massive library that is sorted into sections for access as needed. Reading is so core to his being that his mind is a library (also the play on spelling in his name but thats like page one of the book we don't need to cover that)

So not only does TWS take up an incredibly massive part of his mind, since he has been creating charts and statistic references on skills and weaknesses and scenarios since he first found the story after his suicide attempt, but it also is something that he can't ever even let go of, even if it would've helped him fool the people he loves so much into thinking he was still there. At the 51/49 split, the thing that tips everyone off that KDJ isn't actually all there is he literally took his hyperfixating with him into the train. He made an avatar of himself that wasn't autistic and hyperfixated on reading (and on TWS specifically), less neurodivergent, less fiddling with stuff to stim, and everyone picked up that this wasn't their man in the room with them

I would go on but I told myself I would keep this under 2k like last time and honestly so much of him is tied in with YJH that its hard to make it about Just Him
