CHAPTER 1 — COFFEE STAINS

The only thing Haneul wanted in life was to be a singer — nothing more, nothing less. But as the red string on her pinky finger seemingly got tugged, She didn’t know that an hour away from her was a kid named Jihoon, who had the same dream as hers.

NOKSAN-DONG, BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA: OCTOBER 17, 2010

The coffee stains on Haneul’s crumpled-up notepad were the only sign that she was still alive — that even if she hadn’t left her room for days, the bitter, dark coffee her mother gave her was the only thing keeping her sane. Trash of all sorts made a small mountain-like attraction at the foot of her bed, takeout boxes from various restaurants lived on her fridge, and piles of unwashed dishes were slowly trying to take over her kitchen sink. Her mother, who was tired of lecturing her, tried to reason with the young woman. She would text her day and night about how she’s so young and that she’s wasting her time on some silly passion called music.

“XY Entertainment is now holding auditions in Noksan High School for young men and women aged ten to fifteen! If you want to be the next Taeyon, auditions start tomorrow until the twentieth!” the old man on the television spoke, piquing Haneul’s interest. Gathering all the energy left on her body, she quickly left her room.

“Mom, is it okay if I don’t go to school tomorrow?” Haneul smiled.

Her mother, who was busy putting red nail polish on her hand, nodded. “Just make sure to come home by seven, okay? Lots of bad people are kidnapping kids nowadays,” her mother snickered. “This is the last time you’ll audition, okay? You should be getting ready to go to America, to your Aunt Hyebin! Money is there!”

“Money is also here, Mom. Money is everywhere!” Haneul rolled her eyes. “Don’t you want to brag to your friends about how famous your daughter is?”

“Are you already on Patti Kim’s level yet? Choi Haneul, work hard first, then you’ll be the next Patti Kim.”

Haneul, who was not listening to her mother rant about how Patti Kim was amazing, was already thinking of what song she would audition with tomorrow. “Hey, go away! Invincible Youth is starting!”

“How’s your audition?” the girl beside her asked. The day of the audition finally came, and Haneul was nervous, to say the least. Her hands were starting to clamp up as beads of sweat started to form on her forehead.

“It was good,” Haneul said, her heart beating out of her chest. “I just passed.”

JAMSIL OLYMPIC STADIUM, SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: NOVEMBER 27, 2022

“Can you tell the people next door to keep it down?” she whispered, her focus solely on the iPad in her hand. It was probably the shitty walls of this four-cornered room but as much as she wanted to review her practice video yesterday, the loud singing from outside was the only thing she could hear in this godforsaken place. “I swear, if they don’t stop singing, I might cut my ears off.”

Well, not really. The singing was rather good, but at nine in the morning? She’d rather stick a fork in her ear. “I really can’t do much. It’s Seventeen beside you. You know how they roll,” her stylist laughed as she carefully chose the pieces that Haneul was going to wear later tonight.

“Do you think I could probably ask Seungkwan?” she asked. “We’re kinda close, maybe. We did a variety show together eons ago.”

“Maybe,” she said. “Or just endure the singing. They have great voices, you’ll live.”

It was award season, and honestly, she just wished she could sack it off and go back home to Busan. Not that she wasn’t grateful or anything. But being the ‘token’ nomination this year wasn’t really on her agenda. As a soloist, it was really hard for Haneul to compete with these big groups, sometimes making her doubt herself as an artist. But here we are, getting forced by her manager to wear these obnoxious dresses while she fakes a smile for the camera. “You know what, I’m knocking,” she said as she stood up and grabbed her robe. The dressing rooms weren’t that far apart. She could clearly hear DK and Seungkwan singing their butts off.

DRESSING ROOM #3A: SEVENTEEN.

“Hey, shut it down! Someone’s knocking!” a voice yelled. The door slightly opened, revealing a disheveled Mingyu who looked like he had just woken up from a deep slumber. “Oh, Haneul sunbae-nim,” Mingyu said. As he omitted her name, the speaker was quickly turned off as they all tried to bow their heads.

“Oh, you don’t need to bow, it’s okay,” she chuckled, noticing how quickly they changed their demeanor. “I just wanted to ask if you could keep the music down?”

“Of course, sunbae-nim!” Seungkwan shouted and bowed again. “We’re sorry!”

God, they were so energetic. “It’s fine!” she said. “Go back to what you were doing before. See you later,” she smiled. Some of them murmured goodbye, and some bowed again, but Woozi wasn’t really trying to make eye contact with her. He just whispered, bowed, and went back to fiddling with his phone again.

“So, what did they say?” her stylist asked as she went back to her room. “Let me guess, they turned it down?”

“Yeah, they did,” she laughed. “They’re nice people.”

“Haneul, here’s the list of producers that want to work with you. Just pick someone and we’ll ask if they’re available,” her manager said. For her tenth anniversary, Haneul has been writing songs to fully capture her ten years in the industry — loved by many, maybe hated by a few. Haneul wasn’t going to lie, because of her rock-hard heart, some people in her own industry were probably annoyed by her. But she didn’t care, not one bit. All she ever wanted to do was to make music, not to get chummy with people she might not even see in the future. “Woozi?” her interest piqued.

“Yep, I was shocked as well,” her manager admitted. “I thought he only worked with Seventeen. I guess not.”

“Is he available?” Haneul asked as she took a sip of her kombucha. “Working with a new producer doesn’t seem bad, right? Widening my horizons and all.”

“Maybe you could ask him later,” her manager suggested. Outside of broadcasts and music shows, Haneul and Woozi never really interacted with each other. The only two she had a connection with in Seventeen were Seungkwan and DK.

LE CHAMBER, SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: NOVEMBER 27, 2022

In this cutthroat industry, having friends was a luxury. If you choose the right people, you were considered lucky. For Haneul, she only has three friends by her side — Jijoo, Hyeran, and Yujin, the three other auditionees who got in with her. “Should we just sack this off and go smoke outside?” Jijoo whispered as the four of them stood awkwardly at the after-party.

“Joo, this after-party was literally made for us. Just stand there and act as if you’re not bored.” Yujin faked a smile as the industry's higher-ups were eyeing them up and down. What a bunch of creeps.

“Okay, are you looking for someone, or are you just looking for the bar?” Hyeran chuckled, weirded out by Haneul, who was visibly looking for someone.

“I’ll be back.” Haneul breathed. She then walked slowly towards Woozi, who was alone at the farthest booth from everyone else, with his back against the wall. “Hey, is it a great time to talk?” Haneul asked, her fingertips softly touching the wine glass in her hand.

“Of course, sunbae-nim,” Woozi said, his voice so low only Haneul could hear.

“Just call me Haneul. We’re both the same-age.” Haneul smiled as she sat beside Woozi. “So, I saw your name on the list of producers who wanted to work with me. Is that real?” she asked, her gaze planted on his eyes.

“Oh, yeah. I’ve always wanted to work with you.” Woozi bubbled, eyes glowing from the strobe lights surrounding them. “Not because I like you or anything. No, I like you as a person, but not like that. I like you as a colleague. Yeah, as a colleague,” he blabbered, obviously flustered at Haneul’s presence.

“It’s fine.” Haneul laughed. “I get what you’re saying.”

The crowd had doubled since earlier. Both of their friends were nowhere to be seen. It was just them amongst sweaty, drunk idols who wanted a taste of freedom just for the night. As the night progressed, the only sound Woozi could hear was Haneul’s voice. As if everything got filtered, and he got lucky. Heart thumping out of his chest, this was probably the first time he felt this way. He felt nervous yet excited at the same time. “If it’s okay, I have a couple of songs that would fit you.” Woozi shyly said, his eyes never leaving hers.

“That would be amazing, Woozi.”

long rant on why bunny duo WILL happen

If you can’t tell I am going insane (spoiler warning/leak mention)

1: Merchandise/Logos

As I’m sure your aware, WanPre’s logo scheme corresponds to just about every single Cure:

Pink for Komugi/Wonderful, Purple for Iroha/Friendy, Green for Mayu/Lillan, and Blue for Yuki/Nyammy. This leaves us two colors left: orange and yellow, just enough to fulfill another duo.

The colors don’t just stop at the logo, either.

A special shout out to the daily satoru blog for finding this out (I never could have!), but Mayu’s ribbons also similarly match up with this.

Again, two colors are left, an Orange-Yellow color and White, just enough for our bunny duo!

These buttons are also similar: notice the outer colors and the inner colors. The outer colors on the owners correspond with their pets theme color (Mayu is Blue, Iroha is Pink, which fits with Yuki and Komugi) and the opposite for their pets.

By this, we can assume that Daifuku could be a White or Grey Cure, and Satoru could be a Yellow or Orange cure.

This ones already been mentioned, but again, the yellow/white colors!

..And even more buttons. Almost all merch featuring Satoru and Daifuku is either Yellow/Orange, or White/Grey. I’m not going to list everything ever here, but check out the Precure Wiki for more merchandise listings.

2: Daifuku is an anomaly (lol)

If you are unaware, Daifuku is a huge character for merchandising from WanPre. According to the wiki, out of all of the mascots, Daifuku has sold out much, much quicker and is well-received by fans.

Also, in WPC23.. do I have to explain this screen shot? Yuki just straight up calls him not ordinary.

But, she is right. Out of all the animals we’ve seen in the show, besides the Cures and the Kirarin Animals, none have the same proportions Daifuku does. And we know he isn’t a Kirarin animal (lacking the gem), so you can assume he’s a future Cure.

Also, as of WP24, Daifuku (and Satoru) has been to Niko Garden. Not sure if that strengths the point, but yeah.

And, some card listings that were leaked a while ago:

This one is pretty self-explanatory: there’s 1 more slot for a Cure (or maybe a movie exclusive character) on these cards.

And as of recently, we have seen both of them together on one card in merchandise: it’s possible they both could be a Cure, just on one card.

And last but not least..

There’s 1 more spot for a Cure, or a duo! 3. Other things

Although I do agree the ending doesn’t leave much room for more cures, know that we still might get another ending. Mahou Tsukai and Kira had 3 endings, and Star Twinkle even had 4.

The point is, it’s not too late to call it quits! We have had cures introduced later too: Majesty’s first appearance was in 31. We still have hope. Probably. I’m also probably going insane.

We also can have another ‘Black Pepper’ which personally I think is going to happen— Daifuku will be a white colored Cure and Satoru will be a orange or yellow colored Black Pepper like hero.

Plus, we haven’t had a series without a mid season or additional warrior since Smile, which was 12 years ago. It’s pretty unlikely that’ll happen again.

And it’s not like there is anyone else who can be a mid season besides these two. Unless you count like.. MeyMey but that’s really unlikely lol.

(Against some popular theories: I think it wouldn’t make sense for Niko to be a cure, as not only as she (?) doesn’t fit the orange/white/yellow scheme (based off the Niko leaks), but they aren’t apart of a duo like Mayu and Yuki, Iroha and Wonderful, Satoru and Daifuku..

Plus, in WPC24, notice how Niko’s egg only glows after both Satoru and Daifuku are touching the egg. )

According to some posts I’ve seen on the wiki, ratings for the show actually drop if they don’t have a mid season or additional warrior— having one apparently does better for merchandise sales and reviews in general. Take this with a grain of salt, however. I have no idea if this is true, but I believe it. Plus, with Cure Wing being generally well-received, it’s not impossible that we can have more male cures in the future.

notes: when i got sent this idea ages ago i got so excited. and i wrote three fics for it but hated them all and then made sure they were to never see the light of day. so my solution is to write some cute boyfriend headcanons instead to make up for it!! simply because i absolutely love this idea and i need to write anything for it to sate the need within me.

𓇻 i feel like jungkook’s channel has a plethora of videos, though he specializes in gaming.

𓇻 its probably one of his biggest passions. though i do see him dabbling in commentary, or even review type videos. maybe he’s a bit of a collector as well and goes on hour long rants about rare items or hauls of what he purchased over the years.

𓇻 i see the both of you probably meeting at one of those second-hand game and film stores.

𓇻 maybe you’re just milling around. more content to browse the movies than the games because you only own an old console (something cute like a nintendo DS) but they don’t really sell the game cards commercially anymore

𓇻 and jungkook loses track of why he was even there in the first place when he spots you. slowly scooting towards the corner you’re in.

𓇻 he’d have a pretty hefty audience, a well established one even. and he wasn’t blind to the mean comments that would occasionally show up beneath videos or social media posts. he, himself, never found much issue in dealing with them, on occasion he’d get a little down but he knew that really he put himself up for this. he chose to show his face online, and with that would come some backlash. however, that didn’t mean he wasn’t worried about you or how shitty comments would effect your well being.

𓇻 definitely the “in a relationship but it’s private” sort of photos would slowly creep their way onto his IG posts. maybe of little date nights— candles on the table with a dinner you’d cooked together (2 glasses, 2 plates and 2 sets of cutlery), or your favorite cake he’d tried to bake himself with the lego flowers he’d spent the previous evening trying to make (because at least you could look at the lego ones forever and they wouldn’t die). or maybe even your hand snuck in a photo or simply your silhouette beneath a sunset.

𓇻 maybe a few of your own collectible items had made their way onto the shelf in his studio. an obvious beanbag in the corner (you’d often sit there and read as he went through emails or scripted videos). valentines cards that he’d never thought to take down, or posters of yours that never exactly fit in the bedroom

𓇻 it would become apparent that he was in a long-term relationship when he’d film a moving video. so much of your stuff mingled with his own, split seconds of the shared rooms he’d add to the video before showing his audience his new office space. the extra shoes and cute little additions to his home; soft cushions on the couch, ceramics you’d begged him to buy. your hoard of plushies that took up half the bed or the stupid amount of skin care products stacked up in the bathroom. all a sure way of telling his fans that he was serious about you, even if they had no idea of your name or face

𓇻 and then proceeded to talk about you for 7 minutes because really he wanted everyone to know how much he loved you. and truthfully he never knew when to shut up when it came to you, not when you were what’s on his mind most of the time. he’d tell them how you’d met, and how he had been absolutely enamored by you almost instantly. he’d show everyone the matching bracelets you’d made. grinning as he showed off the receipt he’d kept in his wallet from your first date together at a small cafe in town, mentioning how he kept a baby photo of you in the back of his phone too.

𓇻 the first time you’d show up in a video, he’d plan for the both of you to do some crafts together one afternoon. a hobby you’d been trying over the last couple of weeks, and jungkook liked to indulge you. loved to watch you sprawled across the floor of an evening with glue coating your fingers and way too much glitter imbedded in the carpet.

𓇻 he’d have been worried at first. asking you over and over if it was truly okay for you to be on camera, and after your reassured him with a kiss, he’d settle down slightly. though his anxiety had still clung to him, eyes flitting your way throughout the afternoon

I posted elsewhere about that horrific translation of Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto, and a friend commented: "I'm curious how a translator looks at other's work and knows it's a bad translation". Of course the translation nerd in me was thrilled for an opportunity to rant about my specialty, and I proceeded to reply with a multi-comment thread analyzing this particular example. For posterity, I'll combine it all into a single messy "essay" here.

It's actually quite easy once you're familiar with translation "from the inside"! I'll come back to this post with some examples later today, because I'm a huge nerd and love talking about this stuff, haha.

Okay, big thread incoming, buckle up. The book is called Kitchen and is by the author Banana Yoshimoto, who – from what I understand – is well-known and beloved in Japan. The book description on Goodreads starts this way:

"Banana Yoshimoto's novels have made her a sensation in Japan and all over the world, and Kitchen[,] her best-loved book, is an enchantingly original and deeply affecting book [...]"

So, clearly this book is something special, right? I started to read it, and on every page – in practically every paragraph – encountered language that I can only describe as "weird", such as the following:

Three things in particular struck me in this example: the word "alarmed", the word "abruptly", and the word "it" strangely set off in quotation marks. None of these word choices have any larger context in the story that would make them make sense.

Someone else who wrote a very astute review of the book on Goodreads was able to put her finger on exactly what the likely problem here is:

"There are simple errors in translation that can only result from using a bilingual electronic dictionary that provides a list of approximate synonyms rather than actual definitions."

When you look at it this way, it immediately starts to make more sense. Imagine this re-write of the paragraph above:

"When I stepped off the elevator, I was startled by the sound of my own footsteps echoing in the hall. I rang the doorbell, and Yuichi opened the door at once. 'Come in!'"

If you're familiar with "the way literature works", so to speak, you'll immediately recognize that "startled" and "at once" are examples of words that have a similar meaning to the (presumed) original Japanese word, but fit more accurately in the context of the English translation.

(This is obviously different from "creative language", which is lovely and fun and not to be messed with. I love the line "my gaze landed with a thud", for example!)

Another perfect example of bad translation here: the sentence "I couldn't know," which stands out so oddly that it throws the reader out of their reading rhythm. It would make much more sense for the flow of meaning if it said:

"What was this table doing in the apartment? I had no idea."

or

"What was this table doing in the apartment? There was no way to know."

To an experienced translator, a grammatically correct but contextually wrong choice such as "I couldn't know" at this particular spot stands out like a sore thumb. If Google Translate had existed at the time this translation was made (1993, I believe), I might have accused the translator of using it. As it is, I suspect she must have been using whatever the equivalent tool was, at that point in time.

Two more good examples she provides in her review are the following, which I will copy in wholesale:

"Words in Japanese that have more than one possible English meaning are translated not only incorrectly, but inconsistently. (The Japanese '笑' could be 'smile' or 'laugh' in English. Maybe it is not a huge distinction, but when a character 'smiles' at something his friend says and then can't stop shaking it creates the impression of an unbalanced or perhaps epileptic person when, in the original, the character was simply laughing.)"

And:

"Even the friendly Japanese exclamatory 'えええ' has been translated with an inappropriate emotional volume. In response to a ringing phone: “[Mikage] answered it. 'Aaaah!' screamed a high, thin voice. 'Mikage, dear? How have you been?'” This accounts, I suspect, for a huge amount of the inconsistencies in the prose, and for characters that vacillate wildly between contradictory and inappropriate emotions."

Sarah follows this up by observing:

"Japanese is a context-dependent language. A translator who can't be bothered to acknowledge multi-sentence discourse is not ready to translate prose. Instead, she has given us characters who emote passionately, overreact wildly, and then are described as cold, hard-to-read, independent and stoic (or vice versa)."

In conclusion: How do you know if it's the author or the translator you're displeased with? To a degree it's guesswork, sure. But if you ask yourself "What EXACTLY am I displeased with? What strikes me as odd?" and the answer is repeatedly "the specific words on the page" (see all my examples above), then you have to keep in mind that it is the translator who chose those words.

If the original is NOT weird and stylistically unsettling, then it's the translator's responsibility to make sure their translation is not weird and stylistically unsettling either.

If the original IS weird and stylistically unsettling, then it's the translator's responsibility to create a writing style that displays sufficient internal consistency that the reader rapidly recognizes, "Oh, this book IS supposed to be odd and quirky – that must be the author's personal style!"

This translator did neither A nor B.

Small HTTYD Live Action Rant

Respectfully, this is a few paragraphs long collection of thoughts on the new movie. I just post art here, but I post about dragons and this is one of the movies that shaped me as a human. I think its worth talking about and would love to hear thoughts

I went to see the new live action movie last night. The how to train your dragon trilogy, and later the book series (original source material, very different but so very good), were huge inspirations for me growing up and even now. They built the foundation for me of what a dragon is and means, of what the entirety of fantasy means. More than that, it was a cherished story of weirdness, and compassion. About the ways that you can be weird and be wonderful for it.

I went into the movie with incredibly high hopes due to all the good reviews I'd heard. I'd heard the dumb discourse over the actress they hired to represent Astrid (as a blonde girl who SAW herself as her, I had a pang of sadness but the director said she EMBODIED the character, and that matters more), and had heard she'd done such a good job, that everyone had. I was so, so excited.

And I was left with a feeling of grief leaving the theater. Not for the story, which was kept mostly faithful, not even for the small story changes they DID make (some of which I didn't love), but rather for the impossible to miss undercurrent of the new dialogue and choices of the movie... They don't trust us. They do not trust their viewers enough to catch the subtlety of moments and emotions.

Where before, it was looks exchanged and silence that spoke volume in some moments, now it's like they felt the need to hand deliver every subtle message and emotion. It left it feeling hollow, like a poor adaptation of a truly deep and profound story. When I think of all the talk these days around men and the inability to express emotions, the scene between Hiccup and his father on the Red Death's island feels so devoid of rawness, the way the original did.

Stoic, rather than just saying he was sorry, with a voice gentler than we'd seen him use, and wide vulnerable eyes like in the original, instead says "I was just trying to protect you". A cliche, and more than that, this is just blurting out what the original scene conveys! But in the original, it is done in a so much more true to life, painful way that men communicate - not saying nearly as much as they should, and yet feeling it all.

Hiccup, in the new movie, then delivers the line "Now its my turn to protect you". Where is the vulnerability, where is the subtle stepping into his own shoes, not yet assured but more steady? In the original, all he says is "I know". Yes, this is less words, but do you know what it leaves room for?

It leaves room for emotion - for the audience to recognize and digest that Hiccup didn't say he's okay. For the audience to recognize that Hiccup knows Stoic is sorry for much, much more than just this one moment. That Hiccup knows his Dad was always just trying to protect him, and that's why it hurts so much. It respects us, the audience, to know that sorry is both not enough, and all you can say sometimes. That THIS is the real life, emotional truth given to us in this moment.

The film is peppered with instances like this, where they just don't even give us the chance to read between the lines, to apply our own moments and feelings to a moment. It just... felt cheap. It felt robbed of so much of the emotional magic that original movie managed to capture so immensely.

It feels so pervasive in our society today, this need for media to capture our immediate and complete attention. It begins to feel more like an attack on our eyes than a seduction of our brains, which all good stories should be. I want to consume a story, I want to spend my time peeling apart the layers and getting to experience each moment. You can tell me to be sad, and I might be, but it will never be as impactful as if you MAKE me sad, which this movie failed to understand.

I will go to see the sequels, only because I love this series too much not to, but I hope they spend more time on the script and dialogue. This story, though for children, already captured so well what it means to grow up, become someone new, struggle to find yourself, and figure out what the hell it all means. We know that, we as people know what that is and have felt it in our bones enough to recognize someone else going through it and thus feel our own feelings all over again. Please do not take this connection away from us.

The Hierophant - TABINOF. the hierophant is about tradition and also represents the teacher/student archetype. i think of them kind of like profits bringing the word to the people for the first time lol.

The Lovers - TATINOF. think of any picture of them together on tour and tell me im wrong.

The Chariot - DAPGO. im ngl this one is kind of a space filler for chronology's sake, but them writing a second book was definitely a choice they made that furthered their joint image. they willed that into existence.

Strength - Interactive Introverts. Strength speaks on the bravery and fortitude needed to overcome obstacles. Dan particularly has spoken at length about how this tour was hard for him.

The Hermit - Dan's hiatus.

The Wheel of Fortune - The wheel of fortune is about inevitability of change and the cyclical nature of life. I think this one might be too vague for a direct comparison to a specific event? That being said if you can think of an example of a time they were faced with the inevitability of change I am all ears. Either way drawing this card in line with the rws but with dnp motifs would be fun as fuck

Justice - Justice is about karma, about getting back what you gave. I think of their dynamic as a duo, how they give to each other and get the same energy back. I think generally this card would be more negative, talk about literal justice, but I don't think that applies to them.

The Hanged Man - The hanged man is about sacrifice and surrender. I already said this in previous posts but to me this is Phil— going back in the closet for Dan, staying in London while he went on tour, etc. it's the willingness to let things change how they will because you have faith that no matter how much they change they'll always be a little the same.

Death - the changes themselves. sister daniel is a really good representative of this to me, and of the ways dan- but both of them really- have learned to be more comfortable both with themselves and with us as an audience. it's a change for the better.

Temperance - temperance is about balance, to me the most obvious example is their work/life balance. the value they place on their privacy. the taking weeks off after particularly long stints of work. it's doing what you have to do to make sure this work continues to be fulfilling.

My annual self-review!! Yippee! My fics uploaded to ao3 was WAY WAY lower than previous years (2022 and 2023) which is not for lack of thinking about supernatural, but because I was doing a Masters for most of the year lol. Still, 28,816 words over 12 fics is nothing to sniff at! And that again doesn't include things only on tumblr or my many, many, many works in progress!

I will discuss the fics I posts, and then I will discuss all the projects I did for my Publishing Masters as a part 2 because I worked damn hard on them and this is a space for my personal reflection regardless of if anyone else can access them! But if you are interested in any of them and we've communicated before I'll send you them if I can lol <3 Let's go!!

The Year Of Small Relationships

Something about these little guys really compelled me this year.

I've talked about the writing process for this one a little already with my process of developing small characters but I have more silly things to say about it - I used some of Becky's ranting dialogue to slip in some playful digs at spnblr/general fandom discourse:

There are few things I enjoy more in the world than making up fandom discourse. I hold in my brain the knowledge of how every kind of fan would respond to any situation, including if you're in the Apocalypse and the most annoying forum mod you've seen in your entire life won't shut the fuck up about her angel OC that she CLAIMS is from Carver Edlund's later notes as if THOSE are canon. I really enjoyed writing Becky in this one, fully embracing the cringe of extreme fangirlism and digging into the feelings behind it (isolation, a desire for guidance, safely imagined eroticism, guarding yourself from shame however you can). I should put her in more things!

When shall we live, if not now? Daphne Allen and Emmanuel!Cas Daphne Allen's new husband asks too many questions. She tries her absolute best to ignore the answers.

Look at how efficient and compelling that blurb is. Chef's kiss. This one is about shutting down curiosity about yourself because of fear of what you might find (the fact that you might enjoy being masc!!!). I really like this one. I really like all of them lmao but I even more really like this one. """Daphne""" is longing but if "she" starts opening those doors, who knows what might come out. Not for nothing, this was the year I started introducing myself as a different name to more than just my LGBT groups ;P and everyone has been normal about it! Aside from one drunk guy but he was only mildly derisive lol idgaf

The Misplaced Stitch Jack and Castiel A brief look at Jack's taut relationship with being treated as a precious object.

Jack and Cas aren't exactly a minor relationship as such but. also they kind of are. they're nowhere near as explored in canon as I thought they were going to be! I place this one and When Shall We Live in the same mental category. Insular characters prompted to reflection by the confusing actions of Castiel, without him meaning to do this (lol). I love when I can twist an objectively nice and kindly meant statement from one character ("You are precious to me :)") into something that feels like a confirmation of the other character's worst thoughts about their relationship ("I will not be granted closeness unless I conform to his ideals of me"). My thoughts on Jack are very much influenced by @shallowseeker's and @soullessjack's thoughtful analyses of him <3

I LIKE DeanLisa I think they were in love !!!! Dean's fucked up because his brother died and his new best friend bolted and Bobby starts going quiet (when Soulless!Sam turns up). You can romantically be in love with someone and it not work out. Anyway, I started getting more gorey graphic this year when describing Hell huh? I had some graphic violence in A Light Above Descending but I'm really starting to enjoy specifying it. Lol.

I do the old "there is a movie playing that is almost exactly the relationship drama that is about to unfold" in this one, with the cowboy movie.

I gotta think about how I write Cas bc he's sooooooooo awful at advice and emotional support in canon sometimes.

okay so ,,. my thoughts on A Minecraft Movie bc silly

i typically wont rant about this type of stuff because personally i don't care that much. but seeing the reviews on A Minecraft Movie is actually sad, especially coming from someone who watched it in theaters and actually enjoyed it.

., keep in mind i wrote this after i watched a very angering review video from one of those "film critics"" who only say bad stuff about everything. so i apologize if my tone is very... y'knoww. (literally can't think of the word rn ;p) however i edited in some stuff after to kinda make it sound less rude but idkkk. i don't think it is but it might be so apologies in advance if you disagree with me.

to get straight to the point, i absolutely LOVED the movie. here's why:

i liked the awkward sorta wacky humor, it gives off napoleon dynamite vibes, early 2009 movies type deal. (duh, it's by the same director.)

the cheesy lines, it feels like it adds a sort of wholesomeness to it??

the plot, unlike a lot of movies i've seen recently, the plot is stable, well built up, and understandable.

the character development, sure it occasionally seemed like it was off track in the beginning, but TONS of movies do that and i don't see anybody complaining about that. plus, it makes sense later in the movie.

the acting and the actors, (need i say more?) okay i will. i love how steve literally just says random things when it happens. my deadass can't stop laughing at "FLINT AND STEEL‼️‼️" "CHICKEN JOCKEY🤭🤭" and all the other silly lines they have.,,.- it's not supposed to be serious. why so serious. it's silly. it's fun. live a little.

the soundtrack, it's a good mix between the original minecraft soundtrack and some other songs fitting the moment, don't necessarily know how to explain it but the pigstep scene was really cool to me.

, heck, the art style? it grew on me in the first couple weeks of the trailer release. i feel like that's just people's opinion that it's bad because they're not USED to it. ofc, they want it to be the standard 3d minecraft animation style, like, literally every other minecraft animation EVER?? i like the originality.

and the REFERENCES? oh god the references i loved them so much. technoblade, cooked chicken farm from 11 years ago, everything. just look closer and you'll notice a LOT.

people tend to complain about the plot of it, but yeah, that's why it's called "A" minecraft movie. it's not SUPPOSED to be following a specific plot. I believe the main elements are from minecraft legends, though, but it takes different elements from different games, such as the boots of swiftness from minecraft dungeons and the references to the early concepts of the game. also, just the layout. if you didn't watch it in theaters, then i'll have you know ALEX was referenced at the end!!! i always stay for the ending snippets after the credits. also unrelated sort of related, the text color in the credits was lowkey a vibe. like it kinda hurt my eyes but in a good way kinda vibe.

what i'm saying is, i feel like people are giving it a bad review either cuz they're being biased and crabby, or because literally everyone else on the internet is doing so. let people have fun. go outside. you're not a movie critic, you're a basement dweller. a very nit picky one at that. but what do i know maybe my recommendations are just screwed up with negative stuff. i try to block it out as much as possible, not interact and feed into it and such. but it's what's trending, so i'll just live with that. and wait for something i don't care about to come along, for people to complain about instead. (i'm calling it lollll) (i literally hate the internet sometimezzs ughhh)

"Oh god no" - a review.

this is a review, or more of a rant, about the Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook: The Ultimate Guide to the Gluten-Free, Casein-Free Diet by Pamela Compart and Dana Laake. I was not going to post about this book, expecially not as the first post on my shiny new blog. but I need to talk about this. God. I am disgusted to my core and I need to talk about it. Screenshots from the books I read will not be a common occurance on this blog but I will use some here to get across what I have stumbled into.

Book TWs: Ableism (anti-autism sentiment), calorie counting I may have been naive when I judged this book by it's cover, i'm going to be honest with you. I saw this and though "oh! a book with recipes that cover for people with a variety of different needs! how nice!".You can imagine, then, that I was quite thrown off by the contents of the book. The first impression shook that believe a little. Recipes don't start until chapter 10. I skipped the preamble, because honestly I was just here for the food, and it seemed to be about raising autistic children and I am an autistic adult without any children so I figured I didn't need that. I just wanted to know what kind of delicious, sensory friendly foodstuffs the author has in store for us! this excitement was soon crushed as I got to the first recipe, and I am just goint to show you the whole page so you can get a sense of what i stumbled into.

So, some good things: page layout is great, the little icons that indicate dietary needs are lovely! in later recipes they also tell you how much the recipe makes and the estimated nutritional information which is great if you have to monitor that for one reason or another. but let's get to the rant. to begin, I am autistic and have adhd. I have many autistic friends. none of us enjoy drinking straight water. That is not to say no autistic people like drinking water, but it does make me put questionmarks on a supposedly autism-friendly cookbook to lead with it. Second of all: I don't need a fucking recipe to figure out how to put a glass under the tap right? am I the only one who thinks this is a weird thing to add as a recipe? I suppose it's probably done tongue in cheek but, really... is this the tone we're going for here? I felt somewhat belittled by this book reading this. anyway, i pressed on. a lot of recipes were just standard and seemingly random recipes none of which really stood out to me as particularly kid or neurodivergent friendly. A lot of recipes required a lot of different ingredients and different steps and kitchen appliances to use which definitely rules them out for my flavour of neurodivergence (the adhd task avoidance would never let me go through that many steps to make a meal, eat it, and then also do the dishes) but fine, I suppose, different people can handle different things, expecially if you're a parent cooking for a child this might not be an issue at all, and I also understand that to eat gluten free more work is sometimes, sadly, needed. Anyway, my various questionmarks about the recipes compiled with the inclusion of not one, but two recipes for communion wafers. what? no shade on anyone that needs gluten free communion wafers and decides to make them themselves, that's a perfectly reasonable thing to do. What confuses me is why they are here, in this book. It seems unrelated to anything? At this point, in between the water and the communion wafers and the whole first chunk of the book being about bringing up children, I was starting to realise this was a book written by a stereotypical "autism mom" I proceeded with caution, because I hadn't given up on finding nice recipes in here, though at this point I had told myself that I was definitely not reading the first 10 chapters. I should have stopped reading. because on page 215 I wa greeted with this sentence

recovered from fucking autism??? if I had any hope left that this book was trying to promote acceptance and inclusivity, it shattered right there. i went back to the first 10 chapters and scanned them. there's bits in there about how to make your child eat things they might be averse to, how to force them to comply. I then, finally, read a summary. appearently some people think that you can cure autism with a low gluten diet? I'm just so tired of this stuff, man. 0 stars. technically DNF. I feel gross after having read this.

My thoughts on the new trolls movie (me ranting about trolls 3 for way to long)

Disclaimer: I am aware this is just a kids movie and it’s not supposed to be a cinamatic masterpiece. I am mostly just writing this for my own entertainment

I absolutely love doing these movie reviews, my first one being on the nimona move (I will link it at the bottom for anyone who is interested)

Now I will start this off by saying that I did NOT watch the 2nd trolls movie so some of the plot holes I might mention in this post could be things I missed because of that, but most of these are specific to this particular movie

The first thing I noticed are the many inconsistencies, such as when Gristle gets his eyebrow pulled off but only a second later he is shown with both eyebrows fully in-tact. Although, the main problem I have with this movie in in fact NOT the inconsistencies, so I will leave those at that.

At the begging of the movie we see branch as a baby. His family is separated and he is left with his grandmother who is eventually eaten by a Bergen. After this is the wedding scene. During this scene poppy expresses how badly she wishes she had a sister. This whole bit of dialogue just seems so forced. It’s as if the writers were trying to figure out how to make a movie centered around branch about poppy. This is where we get into the main thing I disliked about this movie: The sheer amount of side plots.

The first side plot we run into is poppy’s yearning for a sister. We then see her father grimace and it is extremely obvious right off the bat that she most definitely has one. This was definitely a VERY strange choice considering this movie is supposed to be about branch finding HIS family members. Adding poppy’s sister into the mix is just completely unnecessary and it adds nothing to the movie overall. It essentially just takes away from the main focus of the movie, confusing the viewer.

The second side plot we run into is Tiny diamond wanting to seem grown up. This is just even more unnecessary. Like it’s ok to explore different characters in a movie but REALLY? Why him out of every character? Not to mention that despite trying to “explore” his character, we learned absolutely nothing new about him. They could have instead used this time to explore branch and his brothers a bit more, but alas we are left with these bland brothers who lack personality.

Once poppy finds her sister we run into yet ANOTHER side plot. Poppy’s sister and the other trolls that live in this area are still afraid of the bergens. This honestly just felt like filler at this point as it was a conflict that was already resolved in the very first movie. It felt extremely forced and again took attention away from the actual plot.

Although this movie is about branch and his brothers most of the screentime is used up on little things that barely add anything to the movie. So much in fact that the antagonists BARELY FEEL LIKE THEYRE THERE. Like honestly I forgot they even existed because they have so little screentime. They also tried to give vaneer a redemption arc but failed miserably. They essentially just showed us that he kinda has a little bit of remorse and that’s it. ALSO NOT TO MENTION ONE OF BRANCHES BROTHERS RANDOMLY HAVING A CHILD WITH ANOTHER SPECUES WHAT WAS THAT?? he also just left his wife with all of his children and no help?? Husband of the year award definitely goes to this guy…

The very last thing I found annoying about this blue was when branches brother died and came back to life in the same 2 minutes. They didn’t even have time to shed a single tear because right away he was straight back to life. His death didn’t even matter at that point. They didn’t even have time to use some power of love and family trope because he was alive again just like that.

This brings us to our very last sideplot that did not make sense: just when you think the movie is finally over branch randomly decides to announce that he was also in another band and these random sparkly trolls walk in out of NOWHERE for NO REASON. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS?? WHAT WAS THAT?? JUST WHY?? Why?? I CANT WCEN ?? WHAT??

When watching this movie I kept thinking to myself: why didn’t they instead use all this time to explore the brothers and backstories or give velvet and vaneer ACTUAL arcs and personalities. But alas we can’t have everything

I barely scratched the surface of how absolutely Absurd this movie was in this post, but if I all about trolls 3 for any longer I think I just might lose my mind. If you made it this far I applaud you. You are very brave

RF1: Year 1 - Fall 8

The question that's been living rent-free in my brain since 2009. After analyzing the dialogue I came across post-Mt. Gigant, I'm certain the devs didn't want us to know if Grimoire was a dragon.

Note: The information in today's rant is based on everything I have archived up until now. I know there is more information coming in Kasimir Ruins, the endgame, and even in future Rune Factory titles that will help develop my Grimoire theories. Yet, today, I will focus purely on the townsfolk's reactions/perspectives.

Firstly, Mist isn't even sure if what she's looking at is a Grimoire:

Pre-Boss Fight

Mist: Raguna! Raguna: Mist! So the Grimoire is actually a dragon? Mist: I’m not sure, but that dragon looks hostile.

Post-Boss Fight

Note: After defeating the dragon, you find a Grimoire Scale. I raise my eyebrow at the lack of apostrophe, possibly implying that the Scale isn't from the Grimoire itself? More on this later.

Raguna: So… That was the Grimoire, right? Mist: I can’t say for sure, but I can see how a dragon might be considered a servant of the gods. Raguna: I can’t argue with you there. Mist: In any case, it is just a legend, so no one knows for sure.

And of course, what is the Mt. Gigant scene without the appearance of our mystery woman:

Who, interestingly enough, doesn't call it a Grimoire but just "an actual dragon". Maybe she was too shocked that her plan worked to verify what kind of dragon it was? Or she was simply excited to have summoned something closer to Terrable than the other bosses.

Secondly, most townsfolk are convinced that the Grimoire is not a dragon. What is clear to me, however, is that each region has heard of the Grimoire in some capacity.

Kardians allude to the book in the library, which states:

It’s an ancient tale from the town of Kardia. It’s said that it’s both a god and a messenger of gods, and if you can get hold of it you receive amazing powers. No human and no animal knows what form Grimoire takes. There exist theories that it’s a hermit wizard living on Mt. Gigant, or that it’s a dragon. Dwarves were told of the existence of an item known as Grimoire’s sword.

Leo believes you took down the Grimoire since he would have learned about the legendary Grimoire's sword.

Tabatha states:

Tell me your secrets, Tabatha, what do the elves know?!

And Mei, of course, takes a jab at Raguna:

Mei: Grimoire is a dragon? Are you out of your mind? Grimoire isn’t that kind of creature. In other words, I don’t think it’d defeat you!

I'm not sure if she meant "Grimoire wouldn't be defeated so easily by you" or something along the lines of "the Grimoire is a peaceful being". Perhaps, again, alluding to the idea that the Grimoire is a messenger/hermit wizard rather than a dragon.

Regardless, the unanimous resounding "no" I am hearing from everyone makes me think there was some truth lost to this age-old legend.

I think that the Grimoire was a human and messenger. Specifically, a messenger of the Divine Dragon Terrable. I'm also starting to think that Sharron is a descendant of a Grimoire and is looking into why her parents disappeared.

I have two theories on what could have happened:

Some miscommunication/mistelling of the tale that merged the Grimoire (messenger) and its legendary dragon companion, into one.

Grimoire was cursed into a dragon form. Seeing how many mentions of curses there are in RF1 (the cursed stone and Mei's curse), I wouldn't be surprised if this is another example of one.

Again, I'll be building on this theory as I review more of the game's dialogue. Specifically what Sharron has to say at Kasimir Ruins and well...the entire endgame scene.

But I'm certain that Grimoire was not a dragon, that nobody knows the truth about Grimoire's tale or what happened to them, and that the Grimoire's sword we make from the "Grimoire Scale" is the real deal.

14. Favourite book you read this year?

THIS IS A HARD ONE TO ANSWER unless I can answer it in a couple of different ways:

(A) THE BOOK(S) I ENJOYED MOST THIS YEAR IF I'M INCLUDING RE-READS:

So most of the books I enjoyed reading most this year were re-reads of some faves (The Fisherman by John Langan and Perfume by Patrick Suskind, for example). But I probably had the biggest re-read blast revisiting Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice earlier this year. I'd say the Vampire Chronicles books were my second biggest obsession in my high school years aside from Death Note, so it was fun to see how they read for me another 15+ years later (they still held up surprisingly well, though I have a complicated love/hate relationship with certain aspects of the writing... I ranted a bit more in detail at the time on this blog a bit here [x] and here [x] (heads up for spoilers for the plot of both books in those linked posts)!

(B) THE BOOKS I ENJOYED MOST THIS YEAR IF I'M INCLUDING MANGA:

Berserk is probably the best manga I've ever read, and I read most of it for the first time in 2024! It's definitely not for absolutely everybody because of how dark and explicit it can get, but it really was a fantastically deep read, and one of those special once-in-lifetime media experiences that you don't come across every day, or every year, or maybe even every decade for me. Hard not to see its influence in SO MANY other things afterwards too, like "hmmm unfortunately this is just knockoff Berserk...."

(C) THE BOOK I ENJOYED THE MOST THIS YEAR IF I'M NOT INCLUDING MANGA OR RE-READS:

So honestly MOST of the new reads from 2024 were a bit underwhelming/disappointing for me. But if I had to choose, probably Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh? At the time I finished it I only gave it 3/5 stars, as it was sort of both a deeply unpleasant and disgusting read and also an engrossing and interesting and creative one that was pretty hard to rate. I didn't exactly love it, and I'd hesitate to recommend it simply because I think most people will kind of just be like: "well that was gross and weird and depressing as hell." But even despite all that I was very interested in what the heck was going on and where it would eventually end up going the entire time I read it as well, and certain things about it were also oddly funny, and it might have been the story to stick most vividly in my mind as a reading experience out of all of the new ones I've read. This was the first of Ottessa Moshfegh's books I've read, and it interests me how wildly different all of the premises of her novels sound from each other in the blurbs, so I will definitely try reading some of her other ones in the future too!

Okay, I have been thinking about this for awhile now but I'm hesitant to post it because I might get misinterpreted or get a lot of hate from it. Just know I'm just raising awareness of what bad we could be possibly doing and I'm not taking sides or naming names except Netflix. This post is about cancellations of shows. This might be a little long so read under the cut.

I think another reason for the cancellation of shows is that fans of other shows (Let's call this tv show 1) often put in the comments on tv show (let's call it tv show 2)

"Boo! We don't care. We want another season of tv show 1!"

"Bring back tv show 1"

"No one cares. Bring back tv show 1"

I get that tv show 1 fans are upset about their show's cancelation, and that doing this could potentially bring back their show. But doing it like this could make tv show 2 meet its cancellation. Just know that there are still fans of tv show 2 that will be upset when they find out that their show gets cancelled. Fans are fans, right? Fans look out for each other. If you are about to say "it's to raise awareness and make people watch it because it's cancelled", honey... We recommend it not just because it's cancelled but to share our favorite show to another. Make them experience the same joy you had when you watched it. Not because it's cancelled, but because you had fun. That's how Netflix will know they made a mistake of cancelling it. Bombarding other tv shows with angry comments and complains about tv show 1's cancellation could make Netflix think that the tv show 2 is a flop and cancel it because of "Low viewership". I think "Low viewership" in other terms are "Negative reviews". If you want to save your tv show and complain in their comments section, I suggest you stop. Go find their email address and there you can complain. Or make a post and tag Netflix so that you can tell them how devastated you are of not getting another season. Sign the petition, post about it, recommend it! That's a healthy way of trying to save the show!! Plus, you are not risking another show of cancellation!! There are so many ways of saving the show!

I have seen this happen in real life where the comment section of my favorite show is full of angry comments from another show's fans! A few months later, it was cancelled. Not that I'm hating that other tv show, hell I even watched and enjoyed it myself! I went on a full rant about why it didn't deserve cancellation. And now my favorite show got cancelled because of negative comments that are not supposed to be for my tv show! I even see them calling it rubbish. HOW WOULD YOU KNOW ITS RUBBISH?! HAVE YOU WATCHED IT YOURSELF!?

A Very Royal Scandal review – Michael Sheen is excellent as Prince Andrew in THAT interview

If you haven’t seen the lively Scoop, Netflix’s version of the catastrophic (for him) Prince Andrew Newsnight interview about his relationship with the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, then you might find more to appreciate in A Very Royal Scandal. This is the second time the story has been given a “real events, fictionalised for dramatic purposes” preamble in the same year. As with Scoop, it’s a buffet of top-tier acting talent. Here, Ruth Wilson is Emily Maitlis, and takes the deep voice very seriously, while Michael Sheen is Prince Andrew, and Joanna Scanlan his adoring and doomed private secretary, Amanda Thirsk. The performances are predictably strong, but it lacks the heft you might expect from a such a heavyweight cast, and from a series that follows the excellent A Very English Scandal and A Very British Scandal.

Over three steady episodes, it follows Maitlis and her Newsnight team as they pursue the interview with, and allegations against, the Prince, before re-creating the interview and exploring the fallout. Scoop focused on the producer Sam McAlister, played by Billie Piper, and turned her dogged pursuit of the sit-down into a sort of thriller. This sidelines her almost completely. Instead, it sticks with Maitlis and the Prince, fleshing out their private lives and offering a more in-depth character portrait of each, as they move towards their shared fate. It is elegantly done, though it ambles forward rather than sprinting for the finish line.

That means Maitlis at home, with her husband and sons, having a post-work vodka, talking to her whippet and Googling the links between Epstein and Andrew. We join her as the BBC is under pressure from the right-wing press and the government for its seeming partisanship. Maitlis is rebuked for a Brexit-inspired, on-camera eye-roll, and while Paxman and Humphries would be applauded for that kind of thing, she says, she still feels she has to prove herself. The Andrew interview would be perfect. “I’m not losing out to bloody ITV,” she booms.

The TV industry stuff feels pleased with itself, particularly when it is placed against the absurdity of royal life, shown here to be a surreal catalogue of hunting, golf, fine dining and charades. This goes far deeper into Prince Andrew’s world than Scoop did, and you can see that it is fascinated with his psyche, and the question of not only why he would do the interview, but why he seemed to think, in the immediate aftermath, that it had gone rather well indeed.

We get to meet Fergie (Claire Rushbrook), loyal and amoral, who describes herself and Andrew as “the happiest divorcees in the world”, and has sent her ex-husband off to his old friend Epstein with “a fucking begging bowl” to settle her many debts. Sheen’s Andrew is a near-tragic buffoon, a man-child who believes that he is charm personified, but berates his staff with endless “fuck offs” and furious tirades. If the drama makes an effort to humanise him, it does so through his daughters, Beatrice (Honor Swinton Byrne) and Eugenie (Sofia Oxenham), who by the end appear to if not accept, then at least comprehend the mess their father has made.

A comparison to the later Crown here is inevitable, not least because this spends so much time in the royal households, and runs into the same problem of trying to dramatise very recent history, still fresh in the minds of most viewers. It is hard for it not to dip into caricature. Still, Sheen is great as the ranting Prince – “I am the second fucking son of the fucking sovereign” – but the underplayed star of the whole thing might be Alex Jennings, who plays the late Queen’s private secretary, Sir Edward Young, a smooth master of the old ways. He warns Thirsk against the Newsnight interview, explaining that the royals need protecting from themselves. They live a “frictionless existence”, he says. They will never know what it is to miss a train, because the train will always wait for them if they are late.

The fallout from the Newsnight interview had no intention of waiting for the Prince. This ends with a closeup of that 2001 photograph, of Andrew with the then 17-year-old Virginia Guiffre at Ghislaine Maxwell’s London home, re-created with the actors for both A Very Royal Scandal and Scoop, but also powerfully left in its original form in the final moments here. It is a reminder that this isn’t a simple case of a stupid man making a stupid mistake. When Maitlis replied to Andrew’s description of Epstein’s behaviour as “unbecoming”, she did so with an astonished rejoinder that Epstein was “a sex offender”. Like Maitlis, A Very Royal Scandal handles itself with comportment and class, but as a drama, it is too frictionless for its own good.
